particularly sending a soccer action to discussI've been waiting for Tuesday five pm.
(01:18):
Thank you for everybody who's joined ushere. I think one of the number
one things I saw in the chatSunday night was could we just get to
Soccers Overtime right now? Could wedo like an emergency postgame podcast from the
Soccers and the Stars, to whichI originally was kind of like, well
maybe, you know, maybe okay, but took a lot out of everyone.
(01:42):
Nonetheless, we are psyched to behere, glad to have you here,
and we are ready to get toit on the show tonight. One
of the most controversial matches in thehistory of the Major Arena Soccer League,
which is ten years old now andit's got a fall out that will carry
all long tale with it. We'regoing to talk about it all, from
(02:04):
blown calls to red cards, tosuspensions and all the rest. Oh,
and the Soccers beat Saint Louis toplay those highlights. We'll play those highlights
as well. The East is shakenup because there's a comet falling out of
the sky. Suspensions may change thebalance of the Western race as well.
We'll go through it all in MASLNews, and we'll wrap up with some
(02:28):
good news. You're definitely gonna wantto stay tuned for this, the exclusive
reveal of this season's third kit comingup on Soccers Overtime. They will wear
it on February fifteenth, but theywill see it. You will see it
tonight only on the show of recordin the MAASL Soccers Overtime. We say

as well. But don't forget weare a live show, so make an
appointment for the next one. Tuesdayat five pm, Tony had to miss
(03:39):
today's Annie and Elston. I absolutelyhate missing work under any circumstance, but
the gunk has been going around, man, it has been going around San
Diego. And Monday doing the show, I started to feel chills and whatnot
and it's not feeling good. Socrashed big Upstandy Hobb and Braden Soprna adding
(04:03):
Klugue filling in today on ninety seventhree. Unless I have some really wild
turn for the worse in the nextsix hours, going to be back on
the air tomorrow morning. But Iwas not going to miss this show.
I slept almost the entire day, almost the entire day I slept just to
make sure that I would be healthyand you have my color re established and
(04:26):
be ready for tonight, because Ifeel like there's an obligation on us this
evening to really dig in. No. Yeah, and that's exactly my thoughts
as the game was happening over inTacoma. But I mean, you don't
know, Craig. Maybe people arereally excited to find out what the soccer
third hit looks like, and that'swhy we have this bump in viewership.
Maybe you know it's it's Maybe Igotta say it's it's fantastic, but no,
(04:49):
it's. Oh man, there's justso much to get to. It's
in my years of watching playing indoorsoccer for Rapido, that was an experien
I'd say to the least, therewill be no guest on tonight's show.
I want to explain that there isintentionality behind that decision. I chose not
(05:10):
to put a guest on tonight's show. First things first, the club is
traveling tomorrow to Dallas Fort Worth andit's a difficult situation. Secondly, I'm
not here to get any of ourplayers fined or potentially suspended for things they
say because there is very clearly avery itchy trigger finger inside the MASL front
(05:34):
office to suspend soccers and for suspensionsto be longer than you would expect them
to be. We are professionals,Tony. We know how to play the
line. Well, at least Ido. Here's Tony, Tony will be
right back. I did that too, By the way, during the intro,
(05:55):
I just accidentally exed myself out therehe is, He's back. Do
you ex yourself out? That's exactlywhat I did. This magic mouse is
also touched, so sometimes you scrolland sometimes it takes you back. But
those you're already got to you, man, got to you. I did
like to comment that everybody in thechat has also now been suspended. Correct,
(06:17):
Sorry, y'all can just you're sittingon a yellow Okay, y'all are
sitting on a yellow. We're waitingon we're waiting on the red. Okay.
So that's why there is no guesttoday, because I wasn't going to
open anyone up to potential retaliation, quite honestly, and I hate that we're
(06:38):
at that point right now, butthat's the point we're at absolutely. So
there you go, doctor perfect inthe chance is what did a Sockers call
the match the grimmest night in thehistory of our sport. No No,
a Tacoma announcer did. His name'sAndrew Harvey. He punctuated an overtime game
(07:02):
winning gold call by yelling at theofficials. To our knowledge, although I
don't think they would tell us ifit was true, he has not been
suspended or fined. We might actuallyget into that a little bit later.
But you know what, just likeanything difficult, let's ease in. Let's
(07:25):
ease in. Let's start with somethingthat's going to put everyone in a pretty
good mood, at least in thesoccers audience. There were two matches over
this weekend. It was the soccersthird interstate back to back in ten matches
this year, a semi ludicrous situationand set up for the San Diego Soccers.
(07:46):
Their first two saw them play onthe road and head home. This
one started them at home against theSaint Louis Ambush. And this game was
I would say, just exactly whatyou expected, right Tony get out to
that good early lead. We seeCharlie Gonzales score for one nothing, and
we had heard from the players, even from Gabby Costa on the show last
(08:09):
week that there was some real intentionfor the soccers to get out to a
big lead in this match so thatthey could pretty much pull the parachute down
the stretch. And that's exactly whatwe saw. Craig. I think this
was a fully a business transaction typegame where everybody was in a great mood.
Before the match. We talked withsome of the players and everybody was
smiles and knew that there was ajob at hand, and you can clearly
(08:31):
see that, and the soccers tookcare of business, even in times where
you know Nazi Mento, the goalkeeperfor Saint Louis, was doing a fantastic
job not only blocking the shots buton the ball as well. But ultimately,
this is the soccers that we've beenasking for, making sure that they're
clinical and doing what the soccers tendto do at home. Beautiful goal for
(08:52):
three nothing, the captain on theboard. It's been a while, just
been a minute since we had seenCraig Chiles on the scoreboard for a goal.
Really well done on that play.Lovely the scoop to the header,
as we'll see again, the scoopby Charlie. Incredible headed down by Brandon
and then Craig takes the very quickestof touches to settle the ball before shooting.
(09:13):
That's why he'll have five hundred goalsbefore his career is over. To
Void for four nothing first quarter routeis on and really it's again everything going
according to Hoyle here for the SanDiego Sockers. Yeah, and the pace
of the soccers that we're playing withis is what we've come to understand of
the philosophy of the soccers. Rightnow. You have to Void playing really
(09:37):
great where you can get on theball, and he's a magnet. He
has velcro on a shoe. Forthe most part, it's either he lays
it off for an assist or hetries to take the shot by himself when
he's also getting fouled. For themost part, good seats avoid getting on
that board again. One goal herefor John Eske as the bull rattles in
between two Voy's legs and squirts atthe other end to him to put him
(09:58):
in one v one against Pardo.Essentially an unlucky play right there for Morgan,
who thought he had the ball blockedand recovered and okay, Saint Louis
has a goal. But here comethe soccers with three goals in fifty four
seconds to put the match away.Pee wee, who always seems to get
one of these every year. Justan absolute lace into the upper right corner,
(10:22):
running down the left wing. Hedoesn't score often. When he does,
it's usually a very pretty goal.It was the start of things to
come. This another just standard goal, really poor defending by Saint Louis.
They're not a good team. Nonetheless, six to one. There Christian to
(10:43):
Costa and then the cookie goal. This was a pretty goal right here,
everyone running in the unison, cutto the left, cut to the left,
Salazar puts it in left foot ofshoots right footed for seven to one.
Everyone gets a cravery cookie coupon onthe way out. Seven to one
for San Diego, and literally,Tony, not literally figuratively, at this
(11:09):
point the match was over. Youmuted yourself. Yeah, Tony, you're
(11:37):
muted. I think you're back now, are you back? Yeah, we're
back. Yeah. I think Ithink uh Sigas got in there on you
man. Yeah no, I thinkthat's this happening, because I mean,
we have pretty pretty great soccers equipmenthere, but uh no, I really
like the beautiful nature of the selflessnessof the soccers that I was intending for
(11:58):
that cravery cookie goal, Salzar gettinghimself on that sheet. I'm gonna do
some diagnostics work here. I think, all right, that's all good.
Yeah, so I think we're okayat this point. You'll you'll figure it
out. There's a child's second goalfor eight to two. That's the end
of the match. The second half. I'm glad there's not many highlights here
(12:20):
for Medi Trujuiel because there were nohighlights in the second half of this match.
The soccers pulled the parachute completely. Both teams did. They essentially played
patty cake with the ball in thesecond half, going back and forth.
There was no physicality, there wasno intensity. Boris Pardos sat out the
fourth quarter for Xavier Snare Williams, which really led me to kind of a
(12:45):
question after the match. I sawBoris after the match. I said,
okay, so are you going toplay tomorrow, meaning in Tacoma, and
he said, well, yeah, that's why I sat out the fourth corner,
which made me think to myself,if you're going to do that,
why not just have extra the gameand give Boris you know, make him
completely fresh for the next day, because we know how difficult it's going to
(13:07):
be. We know, no matterhow you know, if you give him
forty five minutes or sixty minutes,it's still a night's work on your body
followed by recovery followed by a flightthe next day. But that's, you
know, not for me. Thatwas for the coaching staff to decide,
Tony. But one point I wouldmake in terms of how dull and dispirited
(13:33):
that second half was, is thatnormally in the locker room, adjustments will
be made, discussion will be hadwith head coach Phil Silvaggio, assistant coach
Cheeky Luna, with Sean Bauers, who quite often is stepping in as with
words of wisdom for the staff,if not for the players themselves. And
all those cats were out on thefloor on Saturday for the Alumni Night game,
(13:56):
which was a great game. Andhey, big kudos to t Cheeky
five nothing over team Bowers. Imean just absolutely, I don't know I've
ever seen five goals scored in tenminutes in an alumni game before, never
mind five for one team brutal. So yeah, Sean takes the l on
that one, but I did feellike the whole thing in the second half
(14:20):
was kind of like, Okay, cool, let's just get to tomorrow.
Let's forget this. Who cares,You've seen the alumni, You've enjoyed your
three dollar bud lights. Now let'ssober up and get ready for tomorrow.
Yeah, and to your point, right, X had a great game,
and last time he was in Tacomahe played well. I'd argue you had
some, if not some of themost key interventions in that matchup, with
(14:43):
an assist and a couple of goodsaves. But you know, in knowing
just Boris and how he operates,it was almost a victory to have him
sit out because he goes a fullthrottle, like asking him to to sit
a whole game might be a nearimpossibility just with the way that he operates.
(15:05):
But again, hindsight is twenty twentyon this one, because you know,
if X would have gotten that situation, I don't know if he gets
himself a red card last thing, and we'll, obviously we'll get to the
match everyone wants to talk about.Lisa n St just commented it was great
to have Bronco Segoda in the arenaagain and it was true. Bronco Segoda
(15:26):
was there, first time in yearsat a soccer's match on Saturday night.
Big ups to folks like Sewan Bauer'sJohn Green, repairing old wounds, getting
things right, getting everyone on side. A year ago was Kevin Crow,
who hadn't been around for a while. Now Kevin was back, looks like
he's an every year guy. AndSegoda was back this year. And I
(15:48):
just have to tell you, Ididn't know no one. You know,
it's fine, but I had noidea that Bronco Segota was there. And
then you know, we do thematch broad cast, go downstairs, get
an interviewed right up, the matchreview for the website and whatnot, and
for release to the press. Backeverything up, you know, drop my
(16:11):
stuff off in the car, godown to the Stellar Lounge just to kind
of see what's going on, youknow, grab one beer. And I
did that, like mostly was likechatting with the security guards about the golf
tournament. There wasn't much to it. And then I'm walking out. I'm
ready to leave, and I'm walkingout and there's two people behind me,
and I just turn around and lookand even though he's forty years older.
(16:33):
Like, wait a second, that'sBroncosagoda, because as you remember Tony during
the COVID year, like, Ispent the whole year cutting clips from nineteen
eighty one all the way through nineteenninety two, and I can't tell you
how many Broncos Agoda goals I managedto record over that time. So got
(16:53):
the chance to say, hell,I did the literal thing, like at
the street corner, are you Broncosto day? He's like yes, And
then I immediately fan boyed out andI told him our intentions because we've had
an intention to retire his number fora while. Wow for a while,
and you know, nothing official, but I'd say next year at front Wave
(17:15):
Arena, makes a lot of senseto get Broncos number twenty up in the
rafters. You know, no dissingany of the Supreme Stars who have had
their numbers retired, every one ofthem a legend, every single one,
but Sagoda camp right of history.Yeah, kind of the best of the
(17:36):
group, the most championships, themost goals. He's just an absolute superstar
of the era, a superstar ofthe era. And remember he was part
of the New York Eros teams thatwon four championships when he was just a
teenager coming over from Eastern Europe. And then his time with the Soccers for
so many years and all the successhe had and eventually playing against the Soccers
(18:00):
with Saint Louis Storm and continuing hiscareer. Just great, great stuff to
have Bronco there to have, LikeI said, almost it feels like a
wound healed by having these stars backin the fold. No. Absolutely,
and I definitely recommend anybody who hasthe time and really wants to get to
(18:22):
know the San Diego Sockers franchise inthe same style of ken Burns. You
know, the ken Burns of theSan Diego Sockers was Craig Elston for a
great part there, so a littleyou know, and if you ever come
across Craig, just ask him about, you know, hey, what happened
in this year and boom he'll tellyou exactly what happened in each game or
something crazy with a fantastic stat togo along with it. But no,
(18:42):
I agree, opening new front WaveArena with a legend number retired. I'd
like to see that me too.So let's hope that happens next year.
JG says, shout out to GuyNewman for making that connection outstanding. However,
it's done, It's done, andthat is that is an absolute key.
(19:02):
So great stuff there. Pardon me, I'm still recovering, all right.
Now, let's get to it.Let's get to the highlights from Sunday
evening, five pm start twenty twohours after kickoff against Saint Louis, the
soccers are in Tacoma to take onthe Stars. The beautiful Wallascora here side
(19:26):
wallascore from Charlie Gonzalez to Felipe Gonzales. Just want to note this play the
Tacoma officials box ruled as no assistand we immediately jumped on it, and
an official for Tacoma that we workwith, Pete rich Meyer, called it
down and he was told no noassist on that play. I'm setting that
(19:49):
up for later. Okay, I'msetting that up for later. A group
that is missing the simplest of decisions. Here's things getting a little hot very
early in the match. Chase Hansentrying to draw off out against Boris Parto,
trying to get a card on BorisParto. There apparently the audio cutout.
(20:11):
I wish it had cut out inthe fourth quarter in overtime, that
would have been maybe helpful. Tacomastarts to come back here, and as
you know very well, Tony,I thought this was gonna be a loss
for the San Diego Sockers. There'sone that's deflected off of one. Gonzales
An in for two one. Thisis the fifth time in ten matches that
(20:33):
the Soccers had to play Tacoma, and that Tacoma had to play the Soccers.
When you have scheduling this poor, when you have scheduling this unbalanced,
it is inevitable that two teams aregoing to get into it because they should
not be facing each other this often, this soon in the season. Never
(20:53):
mind all the travel, never mindall of the other nonsense. But five
times in ten games to have thesame two teams matchup, you're setting yourself
up for issues. Yeah no,And it's really putting two rabid animals together
that have really just history already. These two teams have played hard at every
(21:21):
single stop that they've made, eitherhere or San Diego. These games have
been incredibly even the stars, totheir credit, have come and played and
we really thought, like you said, that this was going to be the
one because they've seen the soccers fourtimes before. It's been very, very
narrow the victories that San Diego hasbeen able to get. But overall,
it's not a recipe for success tobe have such high caliber players in such
(21:45):
a pressure situation because it's been buildingup. It really has been building up,
and you start to lose control ofthis matchup and you can clearly tell
by the first quarter something's off interms of trying to uphold the laws of
the game. You see the goalthere for three to four good past Chiles
to coast to coast as sends thethrough ball into Ascoto, who scores.
(22:07):
Again. I'm setting something up forlater. I just want to note that
again the officials box said, andeven upon review, no assist on this
play on a through ball that wentthrough to Brandon Ascoto. No assist.
Okay, again, I'm setting somethingup for later. Here come the Stars
six' three. Now midway throughthe third quarter. Again, I'm sitting
at the kitchen table back here inLa Mesa, just going yep, yep,
(22:32):
yep, this is what we expected. This is a good to call
me what a side will pass shorthandedgoal. Nobody knew the importance of this
goal at the time, a shorthandedgoal. Instead of going seven to three
down, the soccer score for sixto four put things right back in a
beautiful sidewall pass. Christian, whois not even trying to shoot anymore,
(22:53):
comes up with a very creative ballright there. Soccer is still fighting fight
all the way through this one.Things will off be obviously get a lot
tougher in the fourth quarter bit.You also see Tony here the heightened emotions
reaction to officials. A lot ofsoccer's doing this, like when a call
(23:15):
is made, our team was losingtheir head. Yeah, you can.
You can definitely see the temperature justrise up through the screen. And in
these matches, right, everybody's goingone hundred percent. There is no and
there's nothing other than full throttle inthese matchups. That these are professionals,
they're doing their job. But italso it's a heightened state where any little
(23:38):
call that is starting to really addup exponentially that goes against you, you
start noticing and you start seeing theother team really take advantage of those things,
and you know, to the credit, if that's something that's there,
then you have to take and thenthis play right here easily the worst call
of the night, easily the worstcall. Watch Ramos deliberately stop, that's
(24:03):
obstruction. That's a blue card onRamos. That is a blue card on
Ramos, and Shane Butler shows theblue card to instead Peewee. That gets
Boris incensed. Boris loses his head, starts yelling Butler and Sigoch and he
(24:25):
gets a yellow yellow red. Hegets the immediate yellow yellow red, and
Pardo is sent off, not tobe seen until, as it turns out,
now the club returns home in midFebruary. Five on three again,
did you want to talk about hiddenmoments? Yeah? Five on three power
play. Twenty seconds into being forcedinto action, Xavier takes one off the
(24:49):
face. Well, they get onegoal on a deflection for seven to five.
But Tacoma had so many chances toput this match away, so many
chances to make this the route itcould have been. Here is still shorthanded,
still short handed. Xavier comes upwith a big saint, excellent,
(25:14):
big saint. Yeah, absolutely,it's still going. And now this is
another extraordinarily controversial call, Tony, because what happened at the end is deeply
unfortunate. You've got Jamail Cox fallingafter Charlie Gonzalez tackles the football. Watch
this. Watch Gonzales get the ballfirst, gets the ball first. Now
(25:36):
his leg is out there, Coxtrips over him, but Pino is coming
over and the trip brings him intoPino for what looks like from the outside.
Oh, and of course you've gotnow the stars announcers just losing their
minds about how the soccers are adirty team. Can you pause this for
just a second. Yes, thisis where I started to really get upset,
(26:00):
if you don't mind back it uplike ten seconds, thank you.
So here's what happens. I wantto be really really clear about this.
Here's what happens. That all ofthis stuff is settled down and ta Void
Morgan asks for a water bottle fromthe bench, which, in order to
be fair pausitive right here, seethat bottle. That bottle was skidded out
(26:22):
across the turf from athletic trainer PaulSavage to Tavoi Davoy asked for a water
bottle. You don't want to throwa water bottle over hand onto the field,
right, So he skids it down, you know, like a little
bowling place, skids it over toTavoid, but Tavoi doesn't pick it up.
Alex Caseis picks up the bottle andthen Tavoi asks for it right there.
(26:47):
See give me the bottle please,He's asking for the bottle, at
which point Alex puts it in hisright hand. Look at that. He
moves it from his left hand tohis right hand to keep it away from
Tavoi Morgan. So Tavoy reaches behindand pops the bottle out, and Casara's
pretends like he's sit in the face. He literally puts his hands to his
(27:10):
face and he sends Butler into thereplay room. This was a classless display
of overt showmanship in an attemption,in an attempt to try and draw a
penalty or a suspension on too VoydMorgan. It was a deeply, deeply
unfair and unnecessary play. And Ireally think it's a big tone center for
(27:34):
what's going on because Tacoma is winning, but they're not just trying to win,
They're they're really trying to stoke this. So here we go, and
it's another power play. It's anothertwo man advantage four v three. Pardon
me another four v three advantage.Tacoma can ic this game, but they
cannot because the soccer's penalty kill comesthrough. Huge. Xavier comes up big,
(27:57):
couple of Giants saves Cardinals the bigblock. Now under three minutes to
play, and there's another penalty.By the way, the Tacoma announcer immediately
says, sell job, sell jobon Costa on that one. Now this,
let me be clear, I thinkthat should have been a red card
on t Voyd Morgan. That isa leaping block of a distribution that is
(28:25):
not needed. Now what happens afterwardsis Rafael Cox shoves Charlie Gonzales in the
back of the head and then Charlieretaliates. And I think this is properly
officiated by both sides to give eachplayer a red because clearly that was an
unnecessary play. Now two minutes left, there no one on the floor with
(28:47):
all of these cards, and ina three v three the soccers score for
seven to six. Now this isone hundred percent of penalty and a shootout.
Now there's a player behind, Soyou could make an argument that it
wasn't a shootout, that it shouldhave been a blue card instead of a
shootout, because there is a soccerbehind. But here it is the controversy.
(29:08):
Did Costa leave early? The Tacomaannouncers absolutely insist that he did.
I have no reason to disbelieve them. They can't have their eyes everywhere at
once. But I can believe andespecially the the circumstantial evidence of seeing him
a good three steps ahead of everybodyis hilarious. And then the soccer score
(29:33):
with one point nine seconds left. Now here's the problem. The player who
scored was supposed to be in thepenalty box. Yep, but the fourth
officials box let out Gabriel Costa ata moment that they should are pardon me,
I think's Wan Gonzales at a momentthat they should not have their mistake.
(29:59):
And so even though it's seven sevenat fourteen fifty eight, the officials
get together, bring over the coaches. You can see him say, look,
there should have been five for youand four for you, and instead
it was five and five and thatshouldn't have happened. So it's our mistake.
We screwed up. We let aguy out that we shouldn't let that
(30:25):
out. So we can't penalize youfor this, but we're gonna take away
your goal. We're gonna set thetime at which the player came out thirteen
point six, and we're gonna giveyou the ball back ed, which says
our STARTA makes one of the bestpasses in the history of the soccer's modern
franchise. Excellent, excellent, justbelievable. The whole play the IQ to
have Xavier obviously come out that isa rule roll that ball perfectly get out
(30:48):
in order to have that pass evenbe a possibility is excellent execution of teamwork
and technique. And that's just knowingthe rules, you know, since that's
kind of the theme of today,is knowing the rules or not knowing the
rules. Do you see Brandon theregesticulating at the officials box. Brandon got
fined. Yeah, Brandon got fined. They every time they'll figure out a
(31:10):
way to get Askoto. I'm surprisedthey didn't suspend him. Just absolutely absolute
perfection. You almost feel for Chris. Chris' is like, oh onto overtime.
Overtime starts with Ta Coma on apower play, they don't score,
they don't score. Comes down theother way, Big bunk game over,
(31:37):
game over eight to seven Soccers winwhen it was seven five. I remember
saying in the chat, I knowSusan's in the chat here. I remember
saying at the time, wouldn't itbe funny, Like it would just be
fun Yeah, if the soccer scoredtwice, because the way the match was
going, like there was just absolutelyno chance. And then like, well
(32:00):
maybe, and then they didn't justscore twice, they scored three times.
One woman was taken off the board. Yeah, yes, there you go.
I was just trying my hardest becauseI was watching this game with my
girlfriend Desre, and she's not asknowing of the rules as say, somebody
like us. But I was evenhaving a hard time explaining what was going
(32:24):
on this entire game that in thishighlight package half of the video starts at
five minutes in the fourth quarter, that long video, right, five game
minutes, less than five game minutes, and it was just a comedy of
(32:44):
errors that were just happening over andover again. It was cause and effect,
but the effect seems to be theonly one that was being really penalized.
When you know, obviously in orderto have I'm even smacking my microphone
right now, Chatlie gonzilis obviously sorry. Yeah, five, that's it.
(33:04):
I should probably keep my mouth cutelse to sit for the next five minutes
of this podcast until the next deadball. Yeah, and that's something that
was unseen as a professional level, and that's that's something that I would expect
better from everybody involved. The lastthing that I did hear the announcers really
get on the nose in the fourthquarter was that at we've reached the point
(33:29):
where everything's going to be called.Every small fout is going to be called,
and it's going to be pealamized tothe full extent of the laws of
the game. And that's kind ofwhat ended up happening. But when you
do that and you've never had areal handle on the game itself, you're
going to lose all control and chaoswill ensue. And it's exactly what happened.
And again I was besides myself inthis match just seeing what was happening.
(33:55):
I was I was thinking that theywere going to replay that shootout because
there was they found a hidden anglein the cameras where they did see Gabriel
Costa uh be a little bit ofahead and get that advantage. But everything
and anything that was a possibility happened, and and some I talk about a
(34:17):
a a sobering kind of place ofwhere this this league is at and some
terms, and and I don't likesaying that as much as I love the
sport. Like that's not not goodfor business in any in any case,
for the fans, for the players, for anybody involved. You know,
(34:37):
it's a it's a victory, thepoints are there, but there's so many
more repercussions that came out of this. There's a heavy, heavy cost to
this match. Paul Savage just textedme during the show to say it was
not him who tossed the water bottle, skidded it out to Tavoie. He's
not gonna say who, but thepoint remains regardless of who skidded the water
(34:58):
bottle out, it was an attemptto hydrate a player, not to throw
objects on the field. Yeah so, and what Casarah's did was attempt to
incite something with his actions. Justgive the guy the bottle. There's no
reason not to give the guy thebottle. He asks for it. You
(35:19):
can clearly see him ask for it, at which point Casaras goes from left
hand to right hand and tries towalk it away and shield it. It
was a nonsensical action by a veteranplayer for the Stars. This is a
soccer's show. Obviously, we workfor the team as broadcasters. You know,
(35:40):
I work in the front office lessyou know, robust capacity than I
have in past years thanks to mynew radio gig. But nonetheless, so
you know, I always put thatout there because I'm sure there's a lot
of Tacoma folks watching. I knowthe league is watching, et cetera.
So the first thing I want todo is talk about our side before we
(36:02):
get into the calls. What wasright, what was wrong? Suspensions?
The San Diego soccers don't need tobehave the way that they behaved in much
of the fourth quarter. And Igot so many nasty flashbacks to last year's
Texas match Mesquite match, and thatwas really really wrong, all the things
(36:29):
that happened. And as that's thelast time, we had to go into
the zapruder film of the tape ofthe game tape to you know, to
show the the the off field officialpulling to void Morgan away and grabbing him
around the waist from behind and pullingand moving him, and then to avoid
retaliating to that one thing that iscrystal clear about this club. And if
(36:51):
you remember Tony when we had Craigeron a couple of weeks after those suspensions
on the show, he said itlike, we're a team that we're not
going to start it, but ifyou started with us, we're gonna finish
it, ye, And we're gonnastick up for each other and we're not
gonna take it if you give itto us. And teams know that about
(37:13):
San Diego. But I find itfunny that it's when the team's trailing that
all this stuff comes out. Andobviously this is a club that's not used
to losing, that's not used totrailing, and when they do trail,
and you know, each of theseincidents on the road, crowd against you,
(37:36):
other team against you, you feellike the officials are against you,
you feel like everyone the world's againstyou. Nonetheless, there are lines to
be drawn. And I disagree sostrongly with the league's decision that they handed
down today to suspend Boris Pardo forthree matches for words having said that Boris
(38:00):
Parter was a leader on this team. He's a thirty nine year old man
and he should not should not begetting himself run from a match for his
mouth. He should not a lotof the behavior that happened in this match.
(38:20):
You know, some of it wasdefinitely regrettable, and I don't think
soccers fans should jump to immediately tryand exonerate every player of the San Diego
Soccers for their behavior on Sunday evening. How So, I just wanted I
wanted to make that absolutely clear becauseI feel like, you know, the
(38:43):
remainder of this segment, there's gonnabe some criticism going the direction of the
folks that were in charge of keepingthis match in control. But before I'd
say anything about that, you gottafocus on yourself. You gotta say what
can we do that in these circumstancesto not have this kind of stuff happen
(39:05):
again, And when the tone issent by one of your veteran leaders,
you know, going after not justan official, but you know, the
two officials there were literally considered thetwo best officials in the league, or
at least one, Shane Barber, who has won the award for best Official
in the league, and the otherRyan Sigochu's in charge of all of the
(39:27):
officials. So it's not a situationwhere you're like, oh, look,
at these lousy refs, Look atthese guys, look at these part timers
coming in, and like, theseare the guys that I saw this all
the time from the announcer of thematch and from a lot of fans.
Oh, these refs don't know therules. They don't even know the rules.
Are you kidding me? Guys practicallywrote the rules. It practically wrote
(39:51):
the rules. So that was unfaircriticism directed at Sigoch and Barber. I
went back through the fourth quarter.Frankly, almost all of their calls are
correct. Yes, in this fourthquarter, almost all of their card cards
allowed, you know, cards issued, and calls made are correct. The
(40:14):
one call I would really really pointat is the obstruction call that should have
been made against Ramos that instead turnedinto a tackle from behind by Pee Wee.
That was a cynical play by MichaelRamos, and the officials simply missed
it. They went they didn't justmiss it, they misread it and called
(40:35):
it the other way. And that'swhat let Boris's fuse. And Boris said,
Now, I haven't just again,to be clear, I haven't talked
to Boris about this. I havetalked to other people about this. I
was sick all day. I slepttill one o'clock today, so I wasn't
in a fact finding mood. Butfrom what I have heard from members of
(41:00):
the soccer's front office, Boris saidmagic words. He said the magic words
to get suspended, to get ejected. And we have been around baseball players
getting ejected, basketball players getting ejected, football players getting ejected, et cetera.
And when you say certain magic words, you will get run like.
(41:24):
That's the nature of the business. And Boris shouldn't have said what he said,
and that's why he should absolutely besuspended for the next match. As
the common penalty for a red card, you get a red card, you're
suspended the next match. Charlie Gonzalezgot a red card when he and Rafael
(41:45):
Cox got into it. Both thoseguys are suspended for the next match.
The league went back today and turnedit into a three match penalty, which
keeps Boris out for the entire roadtrip, keeps him out for at Texas,
at Dallas, and at Chihuahua, the most important match remaining on San
Diego schedule. And I have tofeel there's some intentionality to that from the
(42:12):
league. To look at the situationto look at where the soccers are and
to say, all right, you'reout for the rest of the road trip.
We're gonna pick three games interesting threenot two? You know, so
three games? To me, threegames is saying something above and beyond.
(42:38):
And as Jonathan points, one gamefor the red card, two games for
conduct detrimental to the league. Well, yeah, yelling at an official is
conduct detrimental to the league, andit comes with a penalty of one match.
Like, you shouldn't get penalized threematches for words unless those words are
above and beyond, unless those wordsare something along the you know, something
(43:02):
racist, something homophobic, something somethingreally bad. Like from from what I
understand, it was a much moreroutine words you can't say on the radio,
words you shouldn't say on a podcast, et cetera. So you know,
(43:24):
uh right, Boris was suspended acouple of years ago three matches on
the Willie Spur play. And Ijust don't think anything that doesn't involve physicality,
anything that doesn't involve violent conduct tosay, it's really impugning the reputation
(43:44):
of Boris Pardo. It's it's leavingeveryone with, well, what did this
guy really say? What did hedo. It's not my it's not my
place. I don't get to uh, you know, go to the m
ASL front office. I did asktoday was this a disciplinary review committee situation?
I was told no, it wasthe It was the triumvirate up top
(44:06):
in terms of tozer Chef JP thatthat made this call. And it again,
pardos behavior disappointing. I would sayit to his face. He's probably
hearing it now. I'm sure hedoesn't like criticism, but I think a
player at that level of his careerunderstands that, you know, what he
(44:27):
did is not appropriate because the mostdirect penalty was he was taken out of
a one goal match in the fourthquarter. Yeah, you know that,
that's the you said bad things,You got ron and you had to throw
in your your backup keeper eyes coldinto a power play, so a two
man advantage for that matter. SoI do not feel that the punishment fits
(44:53):
the crime at this point. ForBoris Pardo, everyone else getting their standard
red car or one match suspension forthose who saw red. Okay, all
right, I don't know what youthink, Tony, but I just three
just I don't get it. Imean, what's now? This is the
(45:15):
precedent correct, So what is nowgoing to be the protocol whenever this does
happen again in a different situation witha different player, in a different language,
in a a in a way thatyou know, that's something to consider,
right if most of these referees speakSpanish. But at the end of
the day, that's just something sosubjective at that moment where you know what
(45:36):
boris and I know he knows thistoo. This you open yourself to hurt
your team in that situation, andyou know what you got caught for it.
You know, if you if yousteal a penny from your mom,
you're still stealing at the end ofthe day, and you're gonna get those
repercussions as much as any other situationlike that. But overall, I have
to agree with the lack of physicalityfor such a huge implicative suspension, and
(46:02):
I don't think that it serves anypurpose other than to really just shove their
face into it. As far ashow much they didn't agree, and again
they I'll just put they agree withthe way that this match ended because at
the end of the day, guesswhat, the soccer still ended up winning
despite all of these self inflicted woundsat times, and that's something that definitely
(46:28):
is the case. Chadley shouldn't havedone that. After being hit, you
respond in a different way. Thegame had lost its way a while back.
But that's besides the question. Thoseare actions that you don't necessarily take.
And to take it back to youroriginal point, Craig of well,
this team ended up winning, andit almost seems like they could have done
(46:49):
that at any point, regardless ofhow they were playing, regardless of how
the rest were calling the match. It seemed like the soccers at the end
of that match just to decided towin. And I really don't like the
fact that it has to get tothat point in order to see the best
of the soccers. We don't needto see the worst of the soccers to
(47:09):
see them at their best. Andthat's exactly what happened. And sure it's
positive points on on that standing, but overall, we're gonna see what the
what the results and the consequences areof these team actions. And overall,
I do think that you know,we teach this to the kids. I
(47:30):
work with kids, man, weteach them the rules of the game.
First thing you tell them is tosee that guy with the whistle. Whatever
he says goes, and you respecthim as much as you can, because
then I'll take over as a coach. Sure, you're actively in the game,
you're opening yourself up with those words. Whatever they were, it could
it could have It could have beenthe most minor word. But if you
(47:53):
put yourself in a situation where you'reinsulting a referee, those are those are
there, They're prerogative to do.They can go ahead and cart you.
They can go ahead and just sayyou know what, audios. And that's
exactly what happened, putting you nowin a situation where X has to come
in cold, as you're saying, potentially opening himself up to injury. Yeah,
(48:15):
they warm up between the periods andin the quarters and when they can,
but you don't know that that's notsomething that you're gonna go ahead and
and and and know with the crystalball, I guess what, X made
a safe with his face and lookedpretty dazed. And you know, if
if everything was up to part whichI don't doubt for one second, and
he was able to continue, great, But what happens when X goes out
(48:37):
with ahead injury? What do youdo then? That's not put in a
you put in a player keeper becausethey only had two keepers on the on
the on the roster, yep.And I know the announcers were like,
oh, well, they haven't evengone to get a six attacker yet,
Like they were just sure that Xwas going to be out of the match,
but he wasn't. An X isa huge part of the reason why
(48:59):
the soccers won the man match onSunday. He's a huge part of the
reason why they won the match. He made gigantic saves in the fourth quarter,
in overtime, he hustled off forthat equalizing goal. He was He
was great. Xavier was great onSunday in very difficult circumstances. If you
(49:22):
are going to suspend Boris Parno andoffer no punishment to Alex Cassis, seems
really weird. Now, I agreewith Ken the man Parto's mistake is going.
You should never go after the officials. It's not proper. It's not
proper, no matter how bad theyare, no matter how many mistakes they
make. These are human beings, grown men. If you think that they
(49:44):
are flying in on private jets andgetting cushy full time salaries to be officials
in the Major Arena soccer league. You're deeply mistaken. These guys are doing
it because they love what they do. They could very easily make more money
doing something else, almost anything else, and they choose to do this.
And Ryan Siggoch cares about this league. Shane Butler cares about this league very
(50:07):
very, very deeply. They careabout this league. Going back and reviewing
all the calls they made, theblue card against Pee Weee is straight up,
it's a mistake. It's a mistake. They made a bad call.
They called it exactly the opposite directionthe Charlie Gonzales penalty. It's unfortunate because
he does tackle the ball, buthe's got his leg out there for Cox
(50:29):
to trip over, and then Coxflies into Pino, and because of the
level of collision between Cox and Pino, I feel like they felt like they
had to throw a blue or elsethere could be a fight on the floor
because the game at that point inthe fourth quarter was unraveling, right,
you know, through their fingers. The match was unraveling through their fingers at
(50:49):
that point. They were doing thebest they could to keep control of this
match, which brings us to theactual failure by the officials on Sunday night.
If you remember, all the wayback thirty minutes ago, when we
were running through the highlights, Iwas setting this up. The folks who
work as third and fourth and fifthofficials in this league get paid even less.
(51:13):
Okay, they are also doing thisalmost as volunteers, for the love
of the mat, for the loveof the game, for the love of
the sport. They are locals.Whereas you know you have officiating crews that
fly around the country. The onfield officials, the off field officials are
are local. They're always local. So it's not to disparage their character or
(51:35):
intent when I tell you that weknow at Soccer's historically that Tacoma's officials box
is not close to one of thebest in the league. It's it misses
a lot. It misses almost everything. These are the guys that are taking
(51:57):
through balls and saying no assist. They just miss stuff. Yeah, all
the time. When you get tothe critical moment of this match, with
thirty seconds to play and Perira standingover a shootout looking to go up two
goals, Sigich and Butler have specificroles. Those roles one of them is
(52:19):
going to be on the attacking lineright behind Perrera to blow the whistle.
The other is going to be downlow to whistle goal or no goal.
And guess who has to keep aneye on the players at the midfield stripe
that are running behind. It's theofficials box. It's the officials box.
(52:39):
Yeah, and the officials box straightup missed it. They missed it.
So again, I want to beperfectly clear, I think the proper ruling
would have been to retake the shootout, correct, Yeah, if they spotted
the error, it is incumbent uponthose officials to call that error, to
(53:02):
call it out, to wave theirhands or whatever they need to do to
get siggats to blow the whistle andto say, okay, do over,
line up, everybody, do itagain. But you can't expect those guys
to have eyes in the back oftheir head or to be you know,
ninety feet down the floor and tohave the perspective of seeing whether someone's a
(53:24):
little ahead of a line or alittle behind the line or standing on the
line. So in that sense, like, hey call the match right,
yeah, and if that leads toTacoma scoring on the shootout, okay,
then then you know that's what happens. I also think to void, you
(53:44):
know who got a blue for jumpingto block a tote distribution. Again,
Sigas and Butler know the rules betterthan me. They probably can point to
chapter and verse in the rule bookand say that's a blue. To me,
that's a red carnival play because it'sthe cynicism of it. Everyone knows
you can't do that jump up likea like you're the defensive lineman in a
(54:06):
in a NFL game to try andblock the field goal airplay. Yeah,
it's it's it's not good. SoI think those folks need to be staring
in the mirror. Hopefully the Tacomaorganization is going to try and get better
(54:30):
in this way. And if theyhad, maybe it would have worked out
better for the Tacoma Stars that night, and maybe it would have been a
victory for the Tacoma Stars. Butthe Sockers don't put the third and fourth
and fifth officials in the Tacoma Starsbox and then control them. They don't.
(54:51):
Nothing that happened in this match wasin San Diego's control whatsoever. And
this is the last thing. Tony, I sa a call and say that
you know I said it yesterday onthe radio. I did the soccer scored
those goals? Correct? They scoredthe fifth, sixth, and seventh goals.
(55:13):
They scored the seventh goal twice, leaving more time on the clock the
second time. Indeed, they scoredeven faster. Tacoma blew it. The
Stars blew it. They defended likea bunch of morons in the fourth,
late fourth quarter and overtime. Theyin no way were mentally ready to defend
(55:37):
that lead. They defended so bad. I mean, go back and look
at those highlights again later. Howspread the floor is, how many guys
are wide open, how many dudesin blue are just shell shocked by what's
going on. The soccers had towin that game. There aren't maybe Monterey,
maybe Chiuama. There aren't very manyother teams that would have even come
(55:59):
close to winning that game. Tonyand the Soccers did win it. And
I feel like a lot of peoplein the league that aren't San Diegans are
trying to make it seem like theofficials scored the goals, or the officials
awarded San Diego goals, or theofficials did something that directly impacted the score
(56:22):
line. Everything they did to impactthe score line was a generally properly officiated
and b in favor of Tacoma, who was the team that had two man
advantage and a power play to startthe fourth quarter and a power play in
the third quarter that they gave upa short handed goal to coma blew it.
(56:43):
They blew it. This was theirday, their night, and they
blew it. And if you're aStars fan and you want to just cry
and cry and cry about the officials, look in the mirror. Look in
the mirror at the defense of yourclub played in the final out three minutes
and in overtime to let this gamego. They started playing a different game.
(57:07):
The mentality at that point to getthat tie twice was let's go ahead
and run this clock out. We'regonna stop playing soccer all together, and
hope that somebody jumped on somebody elsecall for another foul. We're gonna go
ahead and get the ball, passit around and not to have to deal
with it. But they had todeal with it on two separate occasions.
And again this is very much seeingthat once again the referees made the right
(57:30):
call. Back to the shootout, they went over and tried to see if
there was any type of angle thatwould dictate Colstant was ahead of the line.
That was not the case. Andguess what that was the correct call.
There's no evidence. I was waiting. I was completely waiting for the
call to say, Nope, we'rereversing it, We're playing it again.
(57:52):
I was yelling at my TV saying, with what angle, What are you
gonna do? How are you gonnapull this off? There's no way this
is gonna be overturned. You can'tno way. Because we saw earlier there
is video replay and they decided notto use it, so anything is possible
in this matchup. The soccers endedup doing what they had to do.
I don't think they're the villains inthis. I don't think they're necessarily the
(58:14):
heroes at all. They just existedthroughout, they persevered. We were seeing
the compliments of SETA played really well. Who will calm collect it? And
and that's that right there is exactlywhy he's the captain of the San Diego
sockers. He's one of those peoplethat will bring it down back to soccer.
(58:34):
It was his pass that that pingright above tooth tooth. What should
he have done? One or twothings either wait for it and just have
it have the chance to lob rightover him because it was so close,
or turn around, wait for therebound and catch the ball it's got the
wood and have a chance. There'sno headers, there's no anything. And
that just didn't happen. There wereso many bodies in that area, and
(58:58):
nobody other than a sandy was soccerplayer put that in the net. And
then they still had to go intoovertime. They still had to go over
overtime. They had to defend shorthandedshort cast overtime with the great Nick Perera.
And he is a great player, you know. I imagine I could
hear someone go, oh, lookat Craig. He's ripping, not ripping,
Nick Perera. Nick Perett. Now, did he play good defense at
(59:20):
the end of the in the overtime, Nope? But does he usually know?
But he's one of the best offensiveplayers in the sport, in the
history of the sport. He's oneof the great offensive players. And he
was on the shootout. By theway, Nick, that was either the
third or fourth time this year hehas faced Xavier specifically in a shootout,
(59:45):
shootout or penalty kick, and hetried something different this time. Each time
before it's been one step right footedinto the right corner of the net.
This time he went for the slowmotion, sole role, sole role,
move to the left, get out, get open, and the almost like
cheeky, just dunk dump it intoan empty net. You know, I'm
(01:00:06):
so good, I can just rollit around you and walk it into the
net. And Costa hustled in andhe blocked the shot. Yeah, now
did he leave early? Hey?Tacoma literally has a camera on the bottom
of their jumbo tron that is onmidfield. So where was their camera?
(01:00:27):
Where was the film? Where wasthe angle? Why didn't you have that
camera on it? It's a mess, and it's a mess that the stars
created in their officials box. Backto the first equalizing goal. How do
(01:00:50):
the the officials, the third, fourth, fifth, officials, the guy's
in charge of the penalty box,how do they open the door and let
a guy out before his penalties over? That? Ridiculous? It's it's mind
blowingly ridiculous. Now could you thisis like, this is your gig.
This is what you do. Twominutes, figure out the time, don't
(01:01:12):
open the door until the time's up. So at so many levels, the
fourth officials box let down the match, the league and the Stars, especially
the Stars by not getting that callright. You want to rip everyone else.
You want to rip Costa, Youwant to rip the Why are you
(01:01:35):
ripping Gabriel Costa, He's trying todo his best to win a match.
If he left early, call it, yeah, yeah, and sanction him
immediately because that that's a sanctioned littleoffense. Go ahead and do that.
But again to that point of NickPerera, yeah, he almost took care
of Xavier. But if I'm aStars fan, I'm looking at that chance,
that time frame, I don't careif you're Nick Perera, I don't
(01:01:58):
care if you're Craig Elston. Thetime that you have to shoot that after
you dispose of the goalkeeper was aneternity on his favored leg just to tap
it in. He allowed that tohappen. He scores that goal, it's
over for San Diego. That's it. That's the daggon. No coming back
from that. No chance, absolutelyno chance. But that didn't happen.
(01:02:22):
Well, and I understand, kid, Well, don't throw the low paid
fourth officials under the bus. OHTacoma staff members says, we do have
the overhead, and we've stored itand forwarded it to the league for review.
What are you gonna try and reversethe call? You can try and
reverse the game. You can tryand hand them they're gonna replay. What
are you gonna do? That wouldbe that would be further evidence of this
(01:02:46):
league really holding San Diego to adifferent standard than the standard of the remainder
of the league, thanks to heightenedheightened emotions, you know, And I'm
gonna be kind of careful here alittle bit. The president of the league
is somebody who is not JP,by the way, or Shep or Keith
(01:03:07):
Keith as a commissioner of the league. The president of the league is Empire's
owner. You may remember too.I'll just speak facts. Two years ago,
he personally issued a statement impugning thecharacter of both Brandon Escoto and Boris
Pardo and the soccers at large. We have seen since then, it seems
(01:03:30):
like every year the league trying tosend a message to San Diego with a
certain suspension or hold, and youknow, it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing.
And if you did something like that, I just don't think you can.
(01:03:53):
I don't think you can. Youhave to solve that problem when it happened,
and I was all in favor ofthat happening at the time. I
want the game to be called correctly. I don't care if the Sockers win
or lose. I mean, youknow, I'd like them to win.
But if you're gonna lose legitimately, you lose legitimately. But to say,
well, that's on the first that'son the elite officials. One is looking
(01:04:15):
toward the net with a whistle inhand, the other is looking at the
net to call goal or no goal. Everyone's got a job on the team.
And to say, well, likethese guys know, well, that's
where it happened, and then theywent to review it. Here's the very
last thing I swear, because we'regonna move on. We're gonna move on.
(01:04:42):
We have to. But you know, I very much have experienced in
the past being on a live micand running red, having my emotions over
the top, feeling hard done, and having that ability to say it right
(01:05:04):
into a microphone. Andrew Harvey dida really, really bad job on Sunday
evening. The play by play announcerof The Star is a guy who calls
usl championship matches for Tacoma Defiance.Guy who's well known, respected in the
soccer community in the Pacific Northwest.I think he's a solid play by play
(01:05:28):
announcer, but he got hot underthe caller in the fourth quarter and overtime.
And it is shameful to announce anovertime game winning goal as a grim
night for the MASL and to justkeep saying over and over, well,
they missed this call, they missedthis call, they missed this call.
They also missed a call on MichaelRamos that they called a blue on pee
(01:05:50):
Wee Ortega that got Boris Pardo run. So calls are missed. Calls are
missed all the time, and there'sa way to handle that without going over
the line. And I felt likethe line was not only crossed, but
like it was way in the rearview mirror for their their crew at one
(01:06:15):
point saying, uh, the soccersare a team that doesn't know how to
follow the rules, again, impugningcharacter. He was going at you know,
obviously he was going after the refshard. Now Monterey's announcers went after
Kia Depina so hard for the lastChihuaba. I think it was the Chiuaba
(01:06:39):
match, whichever was that close? One was? Oh it was Kansas City,
Kansas City. I mean from thesecond quarter, third quarter, they
were name checking Depena over and overagain. Give them a blue, Give
them a blue. What's the matterlike? Just like going crazy? And
none of that is appropriate. Noneof that is appropriate. We are all
(01:07:00):
there, you know. I saya little thing to myself during the anthem
for every broadcast, Tony, whichis to be a beacon for positivity,
to be an ambassador for the leaguein the sport, to try and stay
positive at all times, even ifthings are going poorly. And you and
I had to announce a dispiriting match, just two home matches ago A foro
(01:07:24):
to one loss, Yeah to Chihuahua. There's ways, there's ways to do
this. I like Andrew. Ithink he does a good job. I'm
not here to just like blast himor put him on blast, but I'm
sure eventually, if not today,he'll recognize that his commentary was inflammatory.
(01:07:47):
It was directly inflammatory, and itled to a nastier chat than you needed.
By the way, why do wehave chats on broadcasts. It's so
dumb, It's so dumb. Man, so it's just such an own goal
for this league to insist on,to insist upon having a chat and having
(01:08:08):
everyone reacting to the chat. Itit was obnoxious, you know, like
it's really really bad. It's reallyreally bad, and I feel like it
was just an existentially dead call.Like recognize Tacoma's role in all of this
along the way, including conceding goals, not just ripping the refs and ripping
(01:08:29):
the reps. And ripping the reps. It creates this situation where we have
this, I mean, good forus, this really highly rated soccer's overtime
show today where we spend almost seventyfive minutes talking about one match. But
like I back in college Tony gettinga communications degree at UCSD, one of
the things that was impressed upon mewas the power of the microphone. That
(01:08:53):
when you hold the microphone, thereis implicit in that fact an authority that
you know what you're talking about.Your words have power, you know,
your words have the ability to changethings. And that's why I will hate
my entire life the people in differentwalks of life, because it's rare in
(01:09:14):
sports that will go on TV orradio and say things that they know are
untrue say things that they know arecompletely wrong, and to do it cynically
in order to get reaction and inorder to stoke anger or stoke division,
etc. It's common in our countrynow. It's extremely common for that to
(01:09:35):
occur. And that's one of thethings I love in sports is that like
scoreboard, baby, you know, like if you lose, you can't say
you won. But that's kind ofwhat's happening here to some extent. And
you know, this whole thing aboutlike, oh well, we're going to
send it to If the league didthat, the soccer should pretty much not
(01:09:55):
show up to the next match likeit would something on our side would be
appropriate if the league did something likethat. I didn't like this match at
all. I think I've made itvery clear. I did not like our
behavior in this match to a veryvery large extent. You know, Boris
has to stare himself in the mirrorwhen this team goes on this road trip
(01:10:16):
and he is not on it,When he's literally not on the trip and
he's watching from home, you know, he has to ask himself was that
appropriate for a leader of a clubto go and get run and to say
things to the leader of officials that'sgoing to get him suspended, you know.
But all of this other stuff,it's just it's bush. It's nonsense.
(01:10:42):
It really, it's nonsense. Andwhat are you going to do?
You know? Is this ninth Isaw someone is this nineteen eighty five conference
finals against Minnesota again, that literallyhappened in themisl Tony. I think it
was game four. Eddie would rememberthe exact specific game. But there was
a missed call and the league changedthe result, changed the results. Do
(01:11:06):
that, That's that's not how thisworks. Yeah, and you know that
soccers team rallied overcame that and overcamea three games to one deficit and one
and beat Minnesota in the MISL finals. Uh. But I'm I'm just really
(01:11:26):
bummed that whenever this stuff happens, then it all the very next thing is
always, well, the soccers arethis, The soccers are that, they're
dirty, they're classless, they're they'rea team that does this and this and
this and this and this. Wejust showed you the real We showed you
Casaras and what he did. Weshowed you cos and what he did.
(01:11:48):
There's two sides to everything. Andto just say that the soccers were out
there as one team doing negativity. It's it's ridiculous. It really hurts whatever
thought the league has of expansion andgrowth because this sets this league back so
(01:12:09):
much. And they want to betouted as these pioneers of different things,
going back to the chat on Twitchand this new age of doing things.
But at the same time, youhave to have the respect for what is.
And I think you know, Iwas talking with a referee and you've
seen me before matches talk to isa fantastic referee that I've been knowing since
(01:12:34):
I'm twelve, ten years old. He's the one in my opinion, absolutely,
he's the one that taught me howto be a referee. I took
the test to be a Corona matrista, which is the referee in the box,
and to be certified for Bacca,California as a referee when I was
fourteen. This man has has reallyshaped my outlook on the game, and
(01:12:58):
I have a reverence for the forthe rules and have them be upheld in
every single way possible. And whatI saw is just not that. And
this league needs to be able toanchor themselves on those rules, because that's
all you got, man, that'sall, you have to make a competitive
league, to make a competitive sport, to make a competitive end anything.
(01:13:20):
You have to really look to putthat rule book in action when needed to
be and equal on both sides,we both had a different pathway to the
microphone, you know. But onething that I personally will always respect is
the fact that, yeah, thisis powerful, this is something that you
do. You were talking about thatdisparaging match with Chihuahua. I'll tell you
(01:13:43):
about another one, the one thatthe Chihuahua kicked the soccers out of the
playoffs last year. I was onSpanish commentary and I had to I just
knew, you have to go aheadand match the moment of this because of
the respect to the opponents, tothe league, to the sport, to
the sanctity of everything that everybody hasput together, from the front office to
(01:14:05):
the people who are selling tickets intwo different countries, the traveling, Everything
comes down to this moment and youhave to go ahead and match it with
the respect that it deserves. Andman, that call did not feel good.
I'll tell you that much. Iheard you on the other side doing
the exact same thing, and that'ssomething that I know instinctively you can't cross.
(01:14:25):
And again, a lot of emotions, passions overwhelmed a lot of individuals
that night. And I really thinkthat at the end of the day,
this is something to not forget becauseyou don't want to make these mistakes ever
again. And I really hope that'sit. This match has been played,
(01:14:46):
the numbers are set, it's inpermanent pen. We move on and oh,
my year's lost the game. Buton it's the reality of that's the
reality, and that's where we sitright now. Tacoma has to move forward.
San Diego has to move forward withsome players not on board. That's
the reality of things. How areyou going to put this together for the
(01:15:09):
rest of the season period period? So let's move on. That's that for
that. There's been many times I'vebeen on the on the radio or calling
a match, said something in heatand really thought about it, you know,
and then like did I do eventhe last match for one that we
(01:15:30):
that we lost. I reviewed thatthat match tape, going like was that
too tough on the team? DidI let my emotions get in there to
say when it's too nothing that they'regetting dominated? No, they actually were
getting dominated at two nothing so it'snot a matter of like, oh,
I'm letting my remote. No,that's the way it was, you know,
(01:15:55):
and I appreciate that. I thinkPhilly and the Dock have gotten a
lot better. I mean, hell, they have just gone up and up
every year. But the difference islike for myself, I'll just for myself.
I know that if I'm on amatch broadcast for the m A s
L and I say something irresponsible,I say something detrimental to the league or
(01:16:18):
something personal. Craig Elster, who'sthat guy? G I really appre going
on? Man, what's going on? Man? What the hell's happening here?
I know that if I do thatthat I am hurting the league,
(01:16:41):
and I know that I am heldto a standard where the people in the
league think. Then if I'm notthe best, and I don't want it
to sound wrong, but you knowwhat I'm saying that I'm a standard bearer
for the league. So I amnot going to in any at any time
try and let my slip show, you know, and to be all over
(01:17:03):
the place, Candy Wampus, somebody, Oh no, you guys are total
homers. In San Diego, everyannouncer wants their team to win. Every
announcer wants their team to win.Every announcer wants their team to win.
But we try every time in SanDiego to do a network level broadcast that
(01:17:27):
if it was being carried on aneutral station, who's being carried on ESPN
or Fox Sports or Peacock or whatever, that people wouldn't be like, who
are these lousy homers? Yeah?Yeah, And no one could have watched
the match Sunday and felt like thatmatch broadcast deserved to be on a neutral
platform. I wish I had aprepared Craig, and this is you know,
(01:17:51):
what I thought was going to bethe highlight of this episode, aside
from what's coming up with the thirdkits. But you even went above and
beyond to be an entertainer for therest of the league who were watching the
Saint Louis ambush games. I didn'thave time to clip it, but you
know, you made a seven toone game interesting and and made it had
(01:18:14):
people look forward to an ambush goalto just let out some steam and and
and be silly and and and inthat in that sense, you know,
really in a way give reverence toa colleague, and same thing with your
cravery cookies, call seven goals, get yourself cravery cookies, make make sure
you go to the game and toget that coupon. But I mean that
(01:18:35):
that those those just instances are areexamples of you know what I'm very proud
to sit next with next to inthe booth. That's you, Craig.
And and at the end of theday, man like, we can only
build our castle, and that's thebest that we can do. That's correct.
And you know I'm seeing like everyannouncers a Homer. I don't care
(01:18:56):
who they are. But yeah,my broadcast idol is and always has been
the late great Chick hern And anyfan of basketball knew that Chick wanted the
Lakers to win. But also ifthe Lakers played bad, he'd let you
know they played bad. If theother team played great, he'd let you
know they played great. Let youknow all the storylines coming in at the
(01:19:18):
beginning of the game so that youunderstood what was happening. Had reverence for
the stars of the game and thegreat plays and the great players, even
if they're on the other team,And had a sworn obligation to be truthful
and to convey the reality of thesituation, whether it's positive or negative for
(01:19:42):
the club. And that is thestandard I hold myself to, is that
I can go back and listen toall of this and be proud. You
know, whether we won, lostor well, we can't draw in this
sport. Okay, okay, okay, masl and news is going to be
really quick. This is normally thesection that everyone tuned in for. I
think we've said plenty today. Iagree. I agree it would needed to
(01:20:09):
be saying it's cathartic, but it'sit's the reality of things. And if
we plan on doing our best inthe booth, I would only expect the
soccers do their best on the fieldand move along and move forward as everybody's
gonna go ahead and keep doing so. Mono Race thirteen and oh they pasted
(01:20:30):
Milwaukee at home and then they wentto the Panther Arena up in Milwaukee and
for the second time this year,it was a close match, but they
prevailed in overtime against the Wave. When I watch matches like that, and
I did watch it all the waythrough Tony earlier that day on Sunday,
it does give me some level ofhope that if you put that team in
(01:20:55):
San Diego, if you put themon the big you know that when they
get off the small field, youknow, four goals instead of twenty two
or thirteen or all these other scoresthat they've put up, that it's a
different story. Nonetheless, you know, they've dropped two points all year.
The soccers have now dropped four pointsthis year because they did drop a point
(01:21:16):
into Coma. So originally when theywant when they won an overtime, if
the Soccers had won in regulation,I would have been on here going,
hey, we're clawing back into thisthing. We're now just a point behind
them for the shield. We justneed a loss from the Flash and we
could maybe get the shield. I'mnot really that concerned about that right now.
(01:21:36):
I think Monterey is going to getthe shield, and I'm really not
sure they're going to lose a matchright now. I would expect them to
go twenty four and oh yeah, and deservedly so if they do end up
winning the shield, then again Ithink the priorities have to be different than
the parameters have to be set ona different focus for the soccers, and
that's you know, championship or busRown Newman Cup. Because again how good
(01:22:00):
to feel winning the Shield last yearand not winning the Cup. I don't
think it was that good. Soccer'shave one major thing they have to figure
out between here and the end ofthe season. How to win on a
small field, how to win ona baby, baby baby pitch. Because
next week they're gonna go to Chuala, and if they make a final against
Monterey, they're gonna have to playat Arena Barregos, and if it goes
(01:22:21):
the way it's going, they're gonnahave to play match two at Arena Barregos
and potentially a knockout game at ArenaBarregos. So that's what you got to
figure out, is how to winin Mexico and not worry about pretty much
anything else. Kansas City has lostfive in a row now, started with
(01:22:45):
an overtime loss, now four straightregulation losses for the Comets. They've almost
let Baltimore back in this thing.Baltimore has three matches in hand on Kansas
City. Now, of course, what happened that road trip happened. Things
really fell apart for Kansas City whenthey blew the lead at home against Utica
(01:23:05):
and lost that match at ot matchseven to six. Then they went south
of the border and they got youknow, messed up. That eight to
seven game had a lot of controversyin it. Nonetheless, they really got
shoved by the Flash and the Savagein the other games. And then they
go to Utica and they got solidlybeat Well it's by four goals. So
(01:23:29):
I still like the top four inthe East to finish as the top four
in the East. But boy,Kansas City from we're the class of the
league to mid and it just tooklike two weeks to get there. They're
seven and six, you know, seven to five and one. So you're
telling me that a back to backto back to back away travel schedule wasn't
(01:23:53):
conducive to back to back to backto back wins for a team. I
am telling you that. I'm tellingyou all right. I just wanted to
to make sure. Turns out itturns out, got a couple of pals
that that think that has nothing todo with it. It's hard to win
on the road. It's very hardto win in Mexico, and the comments
(01:24:15):
are free falling. Uh. Chihuahuaand Tacoma are hilarious to me. Both
teams have one team they can't beatand then they beat everyone else. Chihuahua
can't beat Monterey, They're zero andfive. Tacoma can't beat San Diego.
They're four and one, and they'vethey're undefeated against everybody else. Cracks me
up. I love it and shoutout to Empire. Empire finally won a
(01:24:41):
home game in overtime, almost almostgagged it away against Saint Louis, coughed
up a huge lead in the fourthquarter, and then won in overtime.
Fabian scored in overtime. So gotto do this. By the time this
this is over, you're gonna thinkMichael Fabion is the best thing this this
whole season. Uh and you knowwhat MB shout? According to MVP shout
(01:25:08):
no, no, no, no, according to the logic of the league.
Absolutely well, if he leads theleague in points, he'll win MVP.
So I didn't see is our votingbase? Are you gonna get me
going on this again? No,no, no, no, here,
Let's let me throw some of thedistraction. Callen had a good point.
Pursburg gotta win. Yes, guesswho they beat? Baltimore. It's all
(01:25:39):
good. Okay, soccer's news. You've been waiting. It's been ninety minutes.
I'm really excited about this, andI know the front office is too.
Are you ready to see this year'sSan Diego Soccer's third kit to be
revealed and to be revealed now andto be worn on February fifteenth? Are
you ready? All right? Ithink we're good. Let's do it.
(01:26:01):
Let's go EXCELLENTE. There it is. Let's go ahead and show that third
(01:26:31):
kit. Now. I had beencalling it the gas lamp kit. I
was told not to call it thegas lamp kid. I was told to
call it the third kit. Anotherthing you could call it is reverse city
Connect, which is really what itis. It's the reverse city Connect.
(01:26:54):
But there, there, it is, There she is. I love it.
Chef's kiss. That's that's beautiful.Like again, the soccers have had
consistently great kits throughout these last coupleof years. But again it's really just
knowing and taking the temperature and thepulse of the city in general, and
just having a real understanding of thepeople who come to these games. And
(01:27:15):
there's a lot of crossover with Padreyfans and soccers fans in general. But
this is this is something that's reallygreat. I mean, everybody looks fantastic
and I got a sneak peak awhile back, and in person the jersey.
This is a great graphic, butin person the jerseys look even better.
They pop, they really do.I mean, I agree with with
(01:27:38):
toy Runner. You know. Igot a bootleg d H Gate Reverse City
Connect for Hassan Kim last summer duringthe Padres season. I just think it
looks so much better to have blackas the primary color than to have white.
I think it just looks so muchbetter in the body to be black.
It makes all the colors pop waymore. It just really accentuates the
(01:28:00):
pink, the mint, the yellowfor the player names on the back,
the yellow collar, all of itis accentuated by the black there. So
here's the deal. These will beavailable for sale to the public beginning on
February fifteenth at the match, Soif you want to be the first to
(01:28:23):
get it, if you want tomake sure you get one in your size,
you're going to want to be therean hour early when we open the
gates at six thirty five, thenonline on the Soccer's store. It'll be
available Monday, February nineteenth, Soif you are out of town, if
(01:28:43):
you cannot make the match on thefifteenth, you will have a chance to
purchase this kit for yourself on Monday, February nineteenth, So get ready for
that st soccers dot Com slash shopto get those not for nothing, Tony,
There's been an easter egg of thisin our video that we've played at
(01:29:05):
the start of this show, yep, every single time, and it's always
blown me away that nobody caught it. Yeah, when Ta Boy is doing
kind of his guitar riff there andand he's he's in the he's in the
kit. It's only up on thescreen for like a half a second,
but it was enough Like as soonas I saw it, I was like,
oh, should we keep that inthere? And then I was just
(01:29:26):
sure someone would see it, Andnobody saw it, Like nobody noticed that.
It blew my mind. It's beenthere since day one. It was
there on the home opener. Everybodywho's been to a game has seen it
on the big screen. That's prettybig screen down Apachanga, And I'm also
surprised in that, but I'm gladthat people are reacting very well to it.
And I do see some controversy overin the chat with the third kit
(01:29:49):
with the third keeper kit and ohthe joy compost that we saw on Saturday.
Yeah, I saw Taco bell Isaid, talk about kit. I
will ultimately refute that. All right. I got a chance to see this
with Boris and he was proud toshow it and kind of going back to
(01:30:11):
his pickball roots and his extracurriculars thathe does. And immediately when I saw
it, I'm like, oh,scored a compos triangles, colors, it
pops, it looks great. It'ssomething different. You have the zigzags,
the almost like the side raymis stereodesign. It was. I really enjoyed
it. If there's one thing thatI like that's kind of out there as
(01:30:33):
a goalkeeper, it's the jerseys.I'm classical anywhere else, but you can
get pretty crazy on the jerseys.I love it. I don't know if
that's going to be available for sale. I don't think it is, but
it is pretty cool. Nonetheless. One other big note, February ninth against
chiwuaa bigger game than ever. Now, six o'clock we will have a watch
(01:30:56):
party up at the Califino Sublimit Lounge. The doors will open. I think
they put five thirty on the graphic. I'm more likely that it's five,
but okay, five thirty. Showup at five thirty. Food available for
purchase. If you've been there before, you know that we'll take care of
the drinks. And at six o'clockCorner Sport Arena, the Sockers and the
(01:31:16):
Savage Tony and I will be there, hopefully pulling off an English language broadcast
of the match at the same time, so you'll have our voices on this
match. And that will wrap upthis four match road trip for the Sockers
in which they've gotten two out ofthree points so far. And we'll play
the next three without Boris Parto andthey will play the critical match Thursday without
(01:31:42):
Boris Parto and without Charlie Gonzales.Texas Outlaws first visit to Mosquito Arena.
Soccers have not won a regular seasonmatch at Mosquito Arena ever. They are
zero and two. Now did theywin in the playoffs last year? They
sure did, seven to one. They killed them. But it's gonna be
the x Man for this entire trip, and I'm gonna say I'm kind of
(01:32:08):
excited for it. In no wayis that a diss on Boris Xavier has
been playing pretty well this year. This is his chance to kind of settle
in a little bit. Unfortunately, the only chances he's gotten in three years
to settle in a little bit inthat has been when Boris has been suspended
or got COVID. But uh,nonetheless, it's gonna be the X man
(01:32:32):
in X we trust all the waythe re you know, for the next
three matches of this road trip, and I mean you know, you've got
a Dallas match in there, whichwill almost undoubtedly be tied in the fourth
quarter because we always put our absoluteworst foot forward in Dallas. I've literally
bitched out Phil about this this season, like, dude, every single time
(01:32:55):
we go there, the team isnot ready and he goes, well,
did we win? Well? Barely? Got barely? This this road trip
is semi defining because if you losethe Texas match, they will be four
points ahead of you still with threegames in hand. But you've got the
(01:33:16):
Chiuaba match coming, and then you'vegot Texas back to back the following week
Tuesday Thursday. So it's it's atough road to hoe. To be sure.
The good news is this team isgoing to be encircled the wagons mode
after what happened in Tacoma. We'veseen it before. Craig's mustache is growing
(01:33:42):
in, Like, I'll be reallyinterested. I'll be interested to see how
the Texas match goes. And Ican't I can't in my mind just put
a victory up for San Diego inthat match. I think it's going to
be very hard. Obviously, themom line of Morales, Ortiz and Mendez,
you know, three of the moredynamic attacking players in the league.
(01:34:05):
Lenny Islas will be the backup toX for these three matches, and he'll
be stepping in like he did inthe Tacoma game back two times back.
So that's how it's gonna go.Bors won't even be allowed on the trip
because he's suspended. So two matchesthis week, and the big one is
(01:34:26):
Thursday obviously at Texas, and thenSaturday. It's a matter of like just
don't embarrass yourself. You know,Dallas has been getting annihilated by everyone there.
You know, they had that onegame they won at the beginning of
the year over Texas and we're thankfulfor them, and then they had the
game against US where they kept itclose, and pretty much every other match
they have not kept it very close, so I'll just be very interested to
(01:34:51):
see how it all goes. Thematches will be on MASL Soccer on Twitch,
there'll be a chat. We'll beback Tuesday to chat through it all,
and if the Soccers get six pointsthis weekend, look out. Yeah
for this club. I think that'sthe best case scenario that we can really
hope for. Is the players whoare going to be there really you know,
(01:35:15):
rise above and really come together andbuild a core. Right that there's
still important players like Leo who haven'treally been on the team that eventually when
they come back and kind of getinto the groove of things, yeah,
you're gonna get boris part of backand again boris part of being back.
Is is instrumental in the way thatthe Soccers play from the back and the
(01:35:39):
defensive line. And I'm really happyto see that ex is really succeeding,
especially seeing him struggle last year withSoccers two. And I'm thoroughly thoroughly blown
away with what he's been able todo in the short stints over into Coma
And that's just a credit to him. He's been working incredibly hard. Still
(01:35:59):
maintain that smile being positive about it. But if if the soccers really come
through with these six points, it'snothing short of impressive, and I think
that should be the ultimate goal,to really be the be the president's print,
preside over the soccers until everybody's atfull strength, and you know what,
(01:36:19):
if it happens and everybody comes backwith Lisa's I was, watch out
last thing and we're gonna get outof here, it does appear. I
talked to Leonardo Delo Rivera on Saturdayat the arena and I asked him,
uh, you know, I saidKwondo. So I said Kwondo was saying
(01:36:41):
it to him. Tell me whenwhen are you coming back? And he
said next week. So if Leo'sback on Thursday, that absolutely mitigates the
loss of Charlie for that huge game, because playing without Charlie and Leo that's
pretty tough. But playing with Leoand not Charlie, I think you can
get away with them at have faithand X, have faith in a defense
(01:37:02):
that plays really strong in front ofhim, and see if San Diego can
pull this match out. It's amatch that going all the way back to
last year, they should have circledand should be very focused to not just
let bygones be bygone, so tospeak, but to be like, Okay,
you guys did all this stuff tous last year. That's one hundred
(01:37:24):
percent the reason why they won thatplayoff series fifteen to one on aggregate last
year, including a shutout, itwas because Texas poked the bear. So
