Det är första dagen efter sommarlovet på Sullivan Community College, strax utanför New York. Ungdomarna samlas, fyllda av förväntan inför en ny termin. En av dem är Michael Domnitz. Precis som alla andra hälsar han glatt på sina vänner – men ett möte blir inte alls som han har tänkt sig. För när han ropar på en gammal vän verkar killen inte ens känna igen honom. Och snart går det upp för Michael att det här är inte alls är hans kompis. Det är en kopia. Det är då Michael blir den första att upptäcka att hans vän har en okänd, adopterad tvilling. Och det här – det är bara början på en helt sjuk historia.
