Längs Moselfloden i västra Tyskland ligger Trier. Bland vingårdar i en stilla del av Europa kan den medeltida stadskärnan tyckas idyllisk, men här vilar en revolutionär ådra och spår av ett av världshistoriens största imperium.
1818 föddes Karl Marx i Trier, hans födelsehus är idag ett pilgrimsmål för många människor, framför allt från Kina. Marx växte upp i denna medeltida småstad vid den stillsamma floden, långt från de industristäder han skulle komma att förändra med sitt skrivande. Marx bodde i ett hus helt intill stadsporten Porta Nigra, byggd av romarna 180 efter vår tideräkning när var Trier på väg att bli en av romarrikets största städer med omkring 90.000 invånare.
Under Karl Marx uppväxtår blottläggs och återupptäcks de gamla ruinerna – Napoleon ville bygga ett revolutionärt kejsarrike – som under medeltiden byggts och sjunkit undan från stadsbilden. Marx ser från sitt fönster de materiella spåren av ett imperium. Han ser hur allt som är fast, någon gång, förflyktigas.
Vi gör en vandring i staden med Karl Marx, och ser hur de förtryckta vinbönderna väcker hans politiska skrivande och gör honom till socialist. Vi vandrar i den romerska staden, i dess trångbodda sjuvåningshus, och in på de monumentala baden, dit alla var välkomna.
