Cordobas historia finns inskriven i dess gator. Kanske på ett mer konkret sätt än i många andra städer. eftersom gatorna och torgen, själva planerandet och byggandet av dem i sig har varit en sorts verktyg för att förmedla en ny ordning, politisk och kulturell, men samtidigt har man alltid burit med sig den historia som man format det nya ur.
Córdoba är en hybrid, och en hybrid av en hybrid. Córdoba är en buljongtärning av spansk kultur, så som den formades i mötet mellan romarriket, den muslimska tiden och åtrererövringens katolicism. I Córdoba omger det islamska rituella mörkret, det katolska gotiska ljuset, de europeiska torgen ligger inskrivna i den gamla medinans gator.
Arkitekten Gabriel Ruiz Cabrero som arbetade i trettio år med att restaurera och bevara katedral-moskén i Córdoba säger:
"Skönheten ligger i kontrasten. Det är en av de stora lärdomarna denna plats och historien ger oss. Vi står inte inför ett monument, vi står inför ett extraordinärt dokument."
Han talar om katedral-moskén, Mezquitan, i Córdoba, men han skulle kunna tala om staden.
