I Sovjettiden var Ukraine en del af imperiet og ukrainsk og russisk kultur lånte flittigt fra hinanden. Den russisk-ukrainske forfatter Nikolai Gogol fra det 19.århundrede var pensum på linie med Holberg og Andersen: han skrev både uhyggelige eventyr og satire om sin egne - hans "Døde Sjæle" er en klassiker, og mange af hans gysere er filmatiseret i flere lande, f.eks. Italien. Men her er nu en Gogol-film, som Christopher har fundet i en smuk restaureret udgave: Viy fra 1967. Jeg havde kun hørt om den, men aldrig set den, og det blev en fantastisk og mærkelig oplevelse, som bare måtte med i den nye udgave af Stegelcast.
