The Supermedia Bros. Podcast is afounding member of the Odd Pods media network
Supers. It was weird seeing Madonnaand something not Evida or the League of

(00:33):
their Own. For me, it'sa reverse. I would talk to movie
in the theater, oh wow, right on. So seeing League of their
Own and all that who was likereverse for me? I was like,
oh damn it, she got allserious, you know. Welcome to the
Supermedia Bros. Podcast, where twobest friends give comedically informative takes on movies,
music, pro wrestling, and muchmore. I'm Richie. Devin is

(00:55):
still on vacation for the rest ofthe month of September, so in the
meantime, I've been having special gueststo come onto the show and do some
cults in them a Saturday episodes withme. Most of these movies we've either
visited on coultson a Showdown or wehave talked about it in passing, but
have never featured on the program.Today, we actually have one that has
both never been spoken of and hasnever been featured on our podcast, and

(01:17):
this was a suggestion from my guesttoday. Returning once more, Russ from
the Infectious Group of Music YouTube channeland podcast, What's going on? Dude?
What up? What up? Yeah? I'm excited to sell to have
suggested this. I think what's funnyis when I threw it out there,
I thought you were gonna be like, do what now? You were you
were? You were like instantly likehey, yeah, yeah, yeah,
we'll cover that. Like I havewanted to start a conversation with somebody about

(01:40):
this movie since I saw it inthe theater, and like, no one
ever wants to talk about Like whenit was current, when it was new,
no one wanted to talk to meabout it. So it's like,
so I'm forever throwing it out therehoping someone will wanted to talk about it.
Right, And the movie in questionis Who's that girl? Staring Madonna
and Griffin Done? And this wasa movie that came out in nineteen eighty
seven, directed by James Foley, and it was what's considered a screwball comedy,

(02:02):
which I love shit like this. It's very slapstick. It's very tex
Avery esque as far as like justthe outlandish kind of like cartoony shit that
happens and would probably actually never happenin real life. And if it did,
somebody please record that ship because nobodywill believe you. Yeah, it's
funny that you say that. Ithink that definitely. Nowadays, the quote

(02:23):
unquote screwball comedy is just lost,Like at the risk is sounded like an
old person. I don't think manyyounger people even know what a screwball comedy
is. And what you said islike it's if you go into it going
okay, this, I have tosuspend a whole lot of disbelief on this.
It's so much fun. And Idon't mean just this, I mean

(02:45):
any screwball comedy where they're a lotof fun. And I don't know what
people were expecting when it was releasedor or even since, like because it
is, to my knowledge, thismovie hasn't grown into any sort of cult
status, and I think it shouldhave. Like I think it's I think
this movie is so much better thanit gets. Credit four. I'll agree
with you on that one, justbecause like I remember having seen this just

(03:06):
forever ago, Like it was amovie that was just on the shelf of
my parents video store, like mywhole family had we had a video store
and everything, and this was oneof the movies that was sitting on the
shelf and it would get rented likemaybe every so often, and we would
just play because in video stores youwould just play videos and shit like on
like the TV or whatever when peopleare coming in. This was one of
them, and that was how Isaw it was on VHS. I think

(03:28):
it was like nineteen ninety five whenI first saw this, and as a
and as a younger, like asa kid, I thought it was funny.
Like for me, I thought itwas funny. But then when I
got older, I was like, well, let me let me give it
another go, you know. Andthere's as you get older too, there's
so many little jokes in the moviethat are that you'll catch with repeated views.

(03:49):
It was like, like, I'mnot trying to paint this out to
be like clue, like you know, like super Deep, you know,
like you gotta watch it one hundredtimes to catch all the jokes. But
there's a lot of jokes you can'tcatch on the first or second run through
this movie. No, And that'sthe fun about this movie too, is
that you don't have to think aboutit, you know. I think a
lot of movies nowadays, which there'snothing wrong with these, by the way,

(04:10):
because I love movies like this buta lot of movies you kind of
have to really hone in and likereally pay attention to. And I mean,
again, I don't mind it,but this is one where you can
just kind of turn your brain off. And he said, suspend your disbelief
and just believe whatever the hell you'reseeing. And to your point earlier,
how you were saying that this moviekind of got shipped on because Madonna was
in it. I loved it becauseMadonna was in it, because I think

(04:33):
she's fine entertaining as hell. Soit's funny you say that because when I
was a kid, I had tobecause I loved it when I went and
sat right, and I was twelvewhen I went sat so, and Madonna
looks amazing in this movie, andI for a long time I had to
be like, I wonder if Ijust like that because it's her, you

(04:55):
know what I mean. And thennow I get to the point where I'm
like, no, I bet abunch of people didn't like it because it's
her, And I think she's hilariousin this Like her conic delivery in this
movie is hilarious. Yeah, Andher physical presence with like physical comedy is
funny into combined with like the accentthat she has and everything else going on

(05:17):
with her character, which the plotof the movie is. She plays a
character named Nicki Finn. She's kindof a carefree personality person and she has
taken the fall for the murder ofthe guy that she was seeing who had
this is this is all explained throughoutthe movie. Spoilers abound, obviously,

(05:40):
but like the boyfriend caught wind ofan embezzlement scheme and he pretty much gets
caught by the people in question andthey offer him and then they frame her
for the murder. She winds updoing four years of a seven year sentence
and is released on good behavior, and the movie kind of follows her getting
intertwined with another character named Loudon Trotwho is marrying the daughter of a really

(06:05):
rich dude in New York and liketheir paths crossed while she's basically trying to
find the people responsible for it.All the while, this same guy,
Loudon, is assigned by his soonto be father in law to escort her
to the to the bus stop toput her on a bus to Philadelphia.
And it's just weird because like, right out of the gate, you would

(06:29):
think like, Okay, there's gotto be some connection like immediately here,
just because why would this dude careabout what this person is doing, you
know what I mean, Like that'swhere you kind of have this something right
here, and I don't know ifthey're meant to do that, but like
you know, she pretty much tellsyou everything that leads up to where the

(06:50):
start of the movie is, right, which is like what you were just
saying, you know, like, hey, so I was going with this
guy and he found out about thisthing and whatever. Right, But if
you watch, if you watched themovie again for the second time, the
cartoon that opens the movie shows youeverything that happened before the movie starts.
Yep. So when I saw thatwhen the first time I went and saw

(07:10):
this in the theater, I didn'tget that at all. I was like,
Oh, well, this is justa cartoon happening with madon you know,
or whatever else. And then thesecond time I watched it was after
it came out for on VHS,and I was like, oh, that's
the whole story she tells in themiddle of the movie. So the plot
is told twice to you during themovie, once with a cartoon and once
when she directly tells another character.Yeah, I thought that was cool with

(07:31):
hell but and and also the animationin question, I love the style that
it's done in. Yeah, Iknow it's not the exact same, but
the vibes that I got and Iknow this is totally like left field,
probably, but it reminded me ofthe little cartoon pieces from Rush as a
Show of Hands live concert. Ohyeah, yeah, I totally feel that.

(07:54):
I get that, I get whatyou're saying. Yeah, And I'm
a sucker for I love animation.I love any type of animation. And
I thought that was a really coolway to explain the plot if you're paying
attention, which again, this isone of those things, like you mentioned
earlier, you catch on a repeatedview where it's like, oh yeah,
they're totally like showing what all happened, because if you don't know fuck all

(08:16):
what's going on with this movie, they at least they have the decency to
tell you about, you know,a quarter to midway through via Nikki's monologue
she's given you know loud and anddude, it's hilarious because the shit that
they go through in this movie, like throughout, like front to back,
It's some of the most outlandish, cartoony, funny, fucking shit really,

(08:39):
the fact that as soon as hegets to the jailhouse to pick her up,
she is like she's already kind ofshowing who she is as a person,
you know, just sitting there likein front of the parole board.
She's like, oh, can Ispoke? And they're like, well,
you got anything else? And she'slike, yeah, you got any mascara?
Like she's more worried about like gettinga fucking mascara and like getting her

(09:00):
fucking leather jacket and all this othership and winds up punch in one of
the fucking security guards on the wayout, and I had to because I
was like, dude, that wouldreally that would put you right back in
the fucking slammer, Like, well, yeah, I like the line right
there where the other guard says,uh, the other guard says, uh,
what do you want her back inhere? Like no, and her
face like she just gotta like, you know, And that's the h That's

(09:24):
the comedy that I love about thisis that she seems very unassuming, but
she's a little firecracker. Yeah, there's a punch of parts like that through
the movie, like when she's buyingthe when she's buying all the stolen guns.
Yes, and she's in that guy'sapartment, she's being very, very
loose and very you know, doesn'treally she doesn't really care what's going on.

(09:46):
But then like when the ship hitsthe fan, she like takes control
of the situation and like throws theguy down and grabs loud and runs out
of the room. And you're like, and she's like, she's the one
that, uh gives him the confidenceto jump from building the building, you
know. I mean it's a like, yeah, it's really cool. Like
there's a lot more to the characterthan how it was marketed, which it
was marketed as Madonna is a dumbblond in a comedy, you know,

(10:09):
and there's she is doing a dumbblind But to me, the character is
the dumb blond is the act LikeNickey Finn is a lot smarter than she
lets onto people. Yeah, she'svery street smart, and it's apparent in
full scenes throughout the movie where especiallywhenever she's like, yeah, I want
to go shopping, like before Igo or whatever, and she winds up

(10:33):
going into a record shop in thismall and lifting like a ton of fucking
cassette tapes. And then to covergetting out of there, she slips a
cassette tape in this random dude's pocketand she's like, hey, meet me
out front. I gotta ditch thisguy. And so he leaves and sets
the alarm off, and then theywind up leaving him and she's got all
this loose. She's like, well, that's right, lock him up and

(10:54):
throw away the key. Yeah, exactly, set that part guy up.
Yeah, but there's little things inthat seat too, Like, for example,
she's setting up the next con,but then Loudon's like, oh,
look, they forgot to take thetags off your close from the last store,
and she not even paid attention tohim. She's like, oh wow,
that's weird, Like while she's settingup the next cone, you know.
And the whole idea is she's workingthis one guy because she's got to

(11:18):
get close to him to put thattape in his pocket. So she's got
like three plates spinning at once, you know. So the character's way smarter
than at least an ad minimum wasmarketed. Right, and then like right
afterwards when they get away in thecar or they leave in the car and
she winds up driving and she Imean, meanwhile, I forgot to mention
that two of the police detectives thatare supposed to be like following her to

(11:41):
the bus station to see that she'soff as well. One of them also,
I kind of guess, is rightthat she's gonna be looking for these
guys, and he had had ahunch that she wasn't truly involved in it,
which I think is kind of neatthat that's like a little subplot.
It kind of reminds me of Taggartand Billy from Beverly Hill's Cop when they

(12:03):
they kind of give that vibe offto me because you got one who's kind
of a smart ass, old,you know, old school guy, and
then you got one that's like kindof young and not dumb, but he
just kind of doofy, you know. And those two are pretty humorous as
well, because they wind up tryingto chase them, and she knows that
she's being tailed, and she's like, you know, goes on this.
She takes a right through a railroadcrossing and then goes alongside this train.

(12:26):
Well, they wind up getting pulledover. I love where she goes.
We're gonna make it yeah, dude, it goes I'll accept anything except the
tie. Yeah. Well, Ilike, I love when I really get
pulled over finally and she's got nolicense or nothing. The cop approach so

(12:46):
she just kind of leans over, you know, and he's like license right
tree, She's like, I don'thave a license. You know, that's
kind of an emergency. You know, my husband's having a heart attack here,
and she sticks her finger in thebail of the on and everything.
Dude, And by god, likethe scene that follows this, like it's
apparent that like he's having a fuckinganxiety attack because you know, because of

(13:11):
that, the police officer believes what'shappening. And then the next shot is
them getting wheeled into the er andshe's run alongside him just fake cry,
like freaking out, and it's like, oh, what's your name, Louden?
What's clear? Well, I'm surewe'll touch on the other one at
some point. So I have twoinside jokes with only myself from this movie
that I say all the time. One of them is, anytime somebody says

(13:33):
louden, if somebody's gonna say loudand clear, If somebody says loud and
I go clear, yeah, andlike nobody knows what I'm talking about.
But in this, yeah, thescene Richie's talking about when they bust in
the ear and they're like, what'sit, what's your husband's name, she's
like louden and a nurse just likea last name. She goes clear and
the nurse just ever so straight faced. Its like okay, loud and clear,

(13:56):
yeah, not even missing the beat. Yeah, yeah, and I'll
hold on one second before when theywhen they get to the mall talking about
her and driving, she jumps thesecurbs, does all the in this beautiful
Rolls by the way, which well, which starts out the movie Beautiful,
and she jumps all these curbs andship that she slides it to a stop

(14:18):
and three across three different parkings, butts and loud and already it looks like
he's starting to have a heart attack, and she goes, oh, we'll
park it this way so it doesn'tget scratched, I know. And that
four fucking rolls Royce, Dude,it's not even his, it's soon to
be mother in law's Rolls Royce. And that car gets fucked over worse than
the Grizzwols family. It does somuch there's so much and I love that

(14:43):
it's not okay. So with somethinglike this, and you know this,
richie, you've seen a million movies, and you've seen really bad productions,
and you've seen movies where you haveto forgive stuff, right sure with this
movie? Is it not shocking? The continuity of the car, Like there's
no point in the movie where you'relike, well, when did that happen?
Like you literally see everything bad happenedto this car throughout the movie.

(15:05):
There's not a point where you're like, wait, where did that sprayping come
from? Like they show you thespray paint, Like, uh wait,
when did the when did the headlightsget busted out? No, they show
you the headlights getting busted out,you know what I mean? Like literally,
the progression the only the only thingthat could be argued you don't see
is who set up the fireworks atthe end of the dude, I'm telling
you. Oh and the other plotthat I keep forgetting about. Loudon is

(15:28):
not only tasked with bringing her tothe bus stop. Oh yeah, what
else? Is he supposed to bea fucking exotic cougar that he has to
deliver to an anal act of hisname Montgomery Bell, And that's another subplot
in the movie. But this damncougar is like part of the fun,
even from from the start with theyhave that gag where the other the bike

(15:50):
courier shows up to get it andhe's like, yeah, what am I
supposed to send? They're like, all right, there, he'll puts up
the thing in the year the catgo ape shit and he you just see
the career take off of But yeah, it's and in a way it later
in the movie in a way wait, I could see on first view,
I could see going like, well, why do you need that's a plot,

(16:10):
But later in the movie it comesinto play. It's part of it
ends up being part of the lovestory, this cat and everything. But
that's I might as well tell youthis now. So that's the other inside
joke that I have. And sothis cat Nikki Finn ends up naming this
cat Murray. And when they gointo Cartier, Louden keeps putting up and
putting all this stuff on mother's chargebecause he's there to pick up the wedding

(16:36):
ring and so on. When Madonnapicks up this like who knows million dollars
necklace and she says, put thaton mother's account as well, and Louden
gives her this just nasty look andshe goes for Murray. So that's the
other joke that I have from withmyself, as if I'm in a record
store or something and I've just pickedup I like add something to the pile

(16:59):
with out like saying anything to whoI'm with or whatever else, and somebody's
like like if if let's say, let's say I'm shopping for records and I
put one hundred dollars bucks set likeon top of what I do, and
if somebody gives me a look,I'm always like for Murray, yeah,
you know, yeah yeah, Andlike nobody, I'm waiting for the day
that somebody, at least in arecord store somebody's like, are you doing?
Who's that girl? You know?Right right, I've been waiting since

(17:22):
nineteen eighty seven for it to happen. But I sure hope someday it happens.
Because the way, and anybody who'slistening to this, if you haven't
seen this movie, you're probably like, what are these guys going on about?
Like if you if you watch thismovie, there's so much charm in
the way Madonna delivers all of herlines, it's so surprising, Like I'm

(17:42):
stunned that she is that good atwhat she did in this movie, and
no one talks about it, right, and it's a shame honestly. Like
I was mentioned earlier before we reallystarted rolling, a lot of people,
when they think about Madonna in amovie, it's either like a League of
their own or Evida, you know, stuff like that. Because when I

(18:04):
ask people about I, have youseen Madonna, you know, like in
movies or whatever, and They're like, oh, yeah, that Baseball movie
And I'm like, yeah, it'sa great fucking movie. And she's definitely
not like the central character. Butit's cool to see her pre those you
know, or at least pre Evida, because I think I feel like that
was her most well known thing outsideof, you know, her music career.

(18:26):
This movie was such a wonderfully charmingpiece of work. And dare I
say she carries it because like Iprobably wouldn't have watched it if she wasn't
in the damn thing. And she'sfunny as fuck. Yeah, I totally
agree. I think she's hilarious.Movie. Like, there's there's so many

(18:47):
little things about the character Like mywife and I were just talking about this
the other night that h and I'mgonna try not to go too far off
the reservation. But we've been watchinga lot of family Ties recently, and
the character of Elx pe Keaton isan unlikable trash bag, Like Alex Keaton
is just not a likable person,Like he's the total asshole of that family.
But it's Michael J. Fox's charmthat makes him a likable character,

(19:12):
right, same thing with Ferrispeeler, really, like Ferrispeeler is just a piece
of work, like a total asshole, but it's Matthew Broderick brings that charm
where you're like, it's okay becauseit's him, you know. And the
character of Nicky Finn, like theeven seeing you and I discussed in the
mall, Like she trashes this guy'scard getting to the mall, then she
rips some clothes off, then she'ssetting up this other guy to get like

(19:34):
just so she can. Like thoseare all asshole moves, but Madonna does
it with such chime that you're like, nah, it's fine, right,
And even the way she like shelolligag skips around and ship she's very eccentric,
like her character is very eccentric, and I think that was the word
that I was looking for way wayearlier to describe her. And it's not
even a bad eccentric. It's justlike, Okay, I'm I'm surprised,

(19:56):
but I'm not surprised that, youknow, half the ship that she's saying
doing yeah, And that's that's thecharm of it. Especially the car is
stolen umpteen times throughout this movie.I should you know, point out that
fucking car gets stolen so many times, the cougar goes missing so many times,
and somehow they always find both. But the scene where she's getting the

(20:17):
guns, like you were talking aboutearlier, they actually they escape out of
that situation because the dude that's sellingthe guns to her things that she's setting
him up. Whenever Louden shows up, he thinks he's a fucking feed or
something. Oh yeah, that wholeshit is just nuts. But they they
wind up bonding there because for thoseof you that haven't seen this are planning
on watching, Nikki and Louden eventuallycome to realize they do have a lot

(20:41):
more in common than they realize. But societal wise, they don't look like
they belong together in any way, shape or form. Louden, is this
really like upstate New York, likegonna be married to a rich dude,
works for a giant corporation thing,And Nikki just seems like this regular,
every day a chick on the streets. Yeah, and like he's the business

(21:03):
type. She's the street smart personwho has obviously had to make her own
way, no matter how that hadto happen. And you can tell he
just come from two different walks oflife. But weirdly they both find that
they have a shitload in common andthey bond a little bit, like right
after this whole ordeal with the gunexchange, and that's where you start seeing
that Louden is probably not as intowhat he's about to sign up for at

(21:30):
all. He seems like he feelsout of place. Well, there's that,
and I don't disagree with you atall, But I also think that
one thing that's becoming apparent to loudby this point in the movie is I
would argue one of the greatest runningjokes in a movie. And no,
but how anybody doesn't think this isone of the funniest running jokes in a

(21:52):
movie. But you agree though, that not only is he getting this bond
with Nikki, but also he's kindof learning through other people that maybe his
wife isn't a wife to be isn'tgreat? Oh no, she? And
how is he How is he learningthat out? Oh? Oh, he
is learning that because they eventually takea taxi, which I think this is
absolutely fucking funny. Like he's takinga taxi and he gets to where he's

(22:15):
going where his fiance Wendy is,who I need to point out. Wendy
is Billy's secretary slash boss in Gremlin'sto the New Batch, and I recognized
her and I was like, Isee her face, but without the big
poofy poofy poofy red hair that wasin that movie. He was like,
Okay, I see where this is, but I digress. He's in the

(22:38):
cab and the cab driver is like, oh, this is Wendy Worthington's place.
He's like, how do you knowthat? He's like, oh,
I had her in my cab orwhatever, and he's like, oh,
right on, you know, like, oh, I didn't know she took
a cab. He was like,I didn't say I gave her right,
I said it had her in mycab. And he's not the only cab
driver to say that. It's atleast three times. Yeah, and it's

(22:59):
a it's a it's a there's onethe one dude. Then there's the best
one is the Jamaica guy. He'slike, this is Wendy Worthington's place,
and he's like he's like, letme guess I had her in recap once
and then uh, and then theother. And then there's the old,
super old dude who's like, oh, this is the worthy place hold on
Whendy gave me a key? Ohmy god. Yeah. So it's like

(23:23):
it's like, like to bring thisback to what you were saying, Like
he's growing this bond with Nikky, but he's in parallel learning that maybe Wendy
Worthington's not the most cleanly person he'sever. No. And then also her
dad like the fucking Bible looking prenumb that he had him signed dude where

(23:48):
Yeah, he said, what isthis and it's a bunch of uh diagrams
of where he can touch her andwhere he can't. Yeah, he's like,
oh no, you don't need toread all that just sign it.
It's like, dude, by theway, speaking of her dad. So,
Lauren and I just watched this movieagain the other night, and near
the beginning of the movie where herdad is there's a very labored scene near

(24:11):
the beginning of the movie where theyforced you to watch her dad taking a
fencing lassens And I have never seena scene. If you would have told
me the first time I was watchingthis, like, Oh, don't worry,
fencing is gonna come back later inthe movie, I would have been
like, that's no, it's not, you know. But like by the
end of the movie, there's areason why they made you watch him doing

(24:33):
the fencing thing, Like there's itall comes back. It's crazy, yeah,
because on the scene where they're bondingwith each other, he uh loudon
tells Nikki that he took fencing youknow or whatever, but that his father
didn't think it was very manly,so he never supported him through it and
never came to watch him. Andthe joke of this is like it's smart
because like it's telling like information that'sgonna be needed soon, but it's also

(24:59):
like kind of telling how Nikki's kindof did see a little bit because she's
like, why would your dad wantWhat did she say, why would you
dad want to watch? You liketo watch move stolen goods? Yeah?
Yeah, because he calls it fencingand she's like, it's like what,
Like the disconnect is so fucking hilariousright there? Hello friends, This is

(25:21):
an AI version of John. Laurenhas the power to make me say anything

(25:45):
I'm just side talent. Lauren isso great. They wind up getting eventually
into the limousine. She spots Raoul, the guy that she's she's supposed to
be gra being a lockbox at abank somewhere or a vault, because she's
got left with a key from herdude who got murdered and she's held on

(26:08):
to it for the last four yearsthat she's been locked away, and she
knows that Raoul is the person thathas the bank vault number that she needs
for the lockbox. So they windup finding this dude and his heavy if
you will, because that's what everybad guy in a movie needs, is
a fucking heavy. So it's hilariousbecause she winds up holding them a gunpoint

(26:29):
tells the limo driver to take atake a walk. She's like, hey,
you walk down the street, don'tlook back or you're dead. He's
like okay, then he just leaves. I mean, fuck, this limo
ain't worth it. So she windsup getting these two guys and Loud into
drive the thing up this car garageand crashes it through a wall. They're
just kind of hanging over a pieryea glasses along the way. Yeah,

(26:52):
And I love how she's like,Loud's doing great right now and they're like,
no, he's not. Like they'relosing their ship in the backseat,
Like, no, he is not. But the fencing kind of comes into
play here, but it's not likewhat we are talking about where it comes
into play like that matters. ButI've seen this in a couple of films
where basically like a little skew breaksout between the four of them, and

(27:14):
Loudon winds up breaking the intent offthe back of the limousine and he winds
up fencing with the antenna wire againstone of the dudes with a knife,
and it's like, yeah, ohyeah, I get it, man,
you know, dude. And I'llsay this, this is a minor thing.
But for this being put out ineighty seven and I'm sure not the
highest budget movie in the history ofthe world. I think it was even
blue screen back then. I thinkit was before green screen. But the

(27:36):
blue screen is the green screen workwhere like raouls hanging outside the limo and
like it's supposed to be hanging offthe side of the building. It's not
too shabby, Like it still kindof holds up, like it doesn't look
incredibly fake when you look at itnow. No, no, it doesn't
at all. And I think that'smostly because, I mean, they still
do it now. But I knowfor a fact, back then you had

(27:57):
to combine much more practical with yourscreen then you then you were just completely
ceging it in. So the camerawork was really well done. The camera
placement was well done, and thenlike the stunt work was was being well
done as well. So far,if if nothing else, hopefully people listening
to this are like, Wow,this movie sounds way better than I thought
it would be, Like, andyes, you should, you should.

(28:17):
You could get this on Google forlike three bucks. Yeah, I think
this is worth every penny of threebucks. And if you if you actually
it might be free either way.But I know, like we have YouTube
Premium, but like, I know, there's a ton of free movies on
YouTube. This was actually free onYouTube for me to watch like multiple times,
so like, rather like it's availableto watch. Like, I'm gonna

(28:38):
put links for Amazon and YouTube inthe show notes below for anybody that wants
to click up and just watch itand maybe come back and check this episode
out again. But yeah, themovie is far better than what you would
think it is. Uh. Theywind up like all the stories wind up
tying together where they eventually get thecougar to this dude. Uh, this

(28:59):
all activists who built an entire sanctuaryon the roof of his penthouse apartment,
which is fucking cool as shit.Actually, like there's a ton of where
Apparently his life is just to hangout with hot chicks and animals and drink
a lot. I want whatever thisguy's having. You know, I'm not
mad at it, No, I'msame same. In fact, I was
just sitting there like, look atthis guy. Hell yeah. But it's

(29:22):
cool because he takes like animals thatare endangered because there's only four of this
particular cougar around. And this iskind of more where Nikki and Louden profess
like that they're falling for each other, and you know, but Louden's like,
oh, I'm getting married and allthis other shit, and but I
wish I should point out they theyfound the lockbox and the next day she

(29:45):
gets on the bus to leave andhe's just gonna go get married or whatever.
Well, while she's on the busride, she's opening up this box
and has got a shitload of photographsand all these pieces of pieces of evid
It's that shows that it's actually WendyWorthington's father who was the embezzler and was

(30:06):
the mastermind behind the entire theft thathappened, and he's he is the entire
reason why her dude got killed andwhy she got locked away, and why
he's been on her ass to getout of here to Philadelphia this whole time,
and oh boy, she uh assoon as she figures this out and
puts two and two together. Ihave never feared for a bus to flip
over more in my entire life thanI saw when this happened. I was

(30:27):
like, Oh, I can't believethat thing didn't roll the fuck over.
Yeah, I know did. Shedecides I'm gonta drive this motherfucker to the
wedding and crash it. Which thatwhole scene was pretty fun too, because
this is where the fencing comes backinto play. You know, they get
to a part in the wedding whereit's like, oh, and these two
shouldn't be wedding, you know something, you know, speaking now for a

(30:47):
whound a piece, and she,you know, comes out on this balcony
and like professors like literally everything toeverybody. And you know, this is
another like suspended disbelief because we allknow somebody like the State Age would have
tackled her ass. Right. Yeah, Well, there's so many things.
I think the second half of themovie ends up being far more screwball comedy

(31:08):
than the first half. And Idon't mean that in any sort of derogatory
way. There's the way. There'sthe way that Raoul and the Fat Man
end up kidnapping the bridal party, and they pretty much kidnapped them like all
roped together, you know, like, which is very very screwball comedy ish

(31:30):
the way that happens. And thenwhen everybody's there at the wedding, they
do those very big things where likewhen Nikki's looking at a thing and somebody's
when the whole crowd is supposed tobe looking at Nikki, like they all
in choreography, the whole audience looksat her, and then they all look
the other way. Like so alot, even from the bus ride to
her trying to get over into thesecurity into the thing and and everything,

(31:52):
it's all very It's a lot.The very end of the movie really ramps
up the screwball aspect of the screwballcomedy to me, but in a good
way, though I don't it's itdoesn't feel disjointed to me. It doesn't
feel like all of a sudden theywere like, oh crap, we're this
ending sucks, so we better justreally ham it up. Like the ending
would be great if they'd played itstraight, And it's great the way it

(32:13):
is, yeah, because some ofthe funny parts are when Loudon and mister
Worthington are fince fighting each other throughoutthe entire like set up arrangement of this
wedding spot. She's got a handfulof cake and she's just skipping alongside them
fighting, just you know, eating, and she's just like, oh,
yeah, you know, I wantto go. She's like, I don't
want to go out Philly after this, like we should go, should come

(32:36):
over for dinner and meet my mom, And all of a sudden, ship
like, oh my god, it'sI can't. It's she's something like she's
like, how are you doing, honey or something. It's like I'm a
little busy right now or something likethat. And she's like, okay,
well later can we go and dothis. He's like, yeah, but
right now I'm busy or something likethat. Yeah, it's like she's like,
yeah, don't be too long.Well it part of me too,
makes me think that, like that'spart of her thing. Is she just

(32:59):
she just assumes everything's gonna turn out, do you know what I mean?
Like it's she doesn't she doesn't reallystress about anything because she's that confident and
a lot, you know, whichis great because it's shown throughout the entirety
of this film that nobody in Loudon'slife, including his own dad, was
ever confident in him, right,Yeah, exactly, So to have someone

(33:21):
that believes in him and truly believesin him absolutely, you know, because
for the most part, like alot of people would think, like,
is she just putting a front on, but like when she's on the bus
and she's actually heartbroken that like it, you know, as far as she
was concerned, it wasn't working out, you know. And yeah, so
it's cool to see the two ofthem, you know, wind up with
each other. Actually so, andit's fun too that the part where she

(33:45):
gets on the bus and she's gonnago, the idea there is that she
doesn't really care what was in thesafety posit box, Like she doesn't care
about proving her innocence anymore because shedoesn't really have anybody that cares about it,
right And when she when she looksinto that, it sees that it's
Worthington's dad that's the issue. Likeshe's not going back to clear herself,

(34:07):
She's going back to make sure Loudondoesn't end up and shit, yep,
and that's an entire character arc rightthere in itself, so right, yep.
And it's a fun character development,and it's it's heartwarming and like,
you know, I think it's hilarious, like the way like the movie ends
with you know, the detectives obviously, like you know, they get him

(34:27):
and they arrest you know, allthe people involved, and funny enough,
like the two detectives wind up havinga thing for each other at the end,
which I thought was fucking hilarious, which is when I was a kid.
When I saw the theater, Ididn't see that coming at all,
Like at the end, I wasjust kind of like, oh, well,
that's kind of weird to throw thatat the end, Like no,
like that's weird, But I didn'tsee it coming. And then when I
watched it again after it came outof VHS, they've watched through the movie,

(34:51):
you could see it coming absolutely, and it's it's fucking hilarious, like
the way that it happens, andit's just so like in a good way.
It's unexpected. He's just like ohfuck yeah, man, and then
like you know, they're are onthe bus going back to Philadelphia and then
he got Murray the cougar and hismate to that. Yeah, I was
like hell yeah. So there's acouple of points in the movie where Murray

(35:14):
is missing, but Madame is theone. She whistles and he comes right
back. Yep, save the day. And even when they when when Louden
gets to the sanctuary and he's basicallygoing there to tell this guy, you
know, hey, I lost thiscat when loud he walks in before loud
didn't even notice his Murray's laying therethe whole time, and you could tell

(35:35):
because he's wearing the necklace. Yeah, yeah, I thought that was funny
as fucked too. She finally shegot him as she got him his necklace.
But yeah, this this movie isfantastic. Like I know, we
we we kind of you know, ran through like some of the highlights of
stuff, but like it's definitely worthsitting and taking in like a handful of
times. Actually, yeah, notonly was this movie a thing, it

(35:59):
sounds track was a thing and it'stour was a thing. Because the soundtrack
and the tour wound up being weirdlythe most successful parts of this entire project.
One of my favorite Madonna's songs comesfrom this movie and it's in the
opening, uh, during the wholeanimation, it's playing that song causing the
commotion. I love that song. That's why when Madonna's Great Sits came out

(36:24):
of the Immaculate Collection, I wasso bummed that that song wasn't on her
Greatest Hits record, right, Andit's I love that there's especially in that
when there's a couple of like referencesto get into you know, get into
the groove, like you know, there's there's callbacks to older material of hers
and it's a fun listen. Andthat one what was it? The Look

(36:45):
of Love is on there as well, and of course, like the title
track, Who's that Girl Like? But causing a Commotion is probably it's probably
my favorite from that act from thatalbum. That soundtrack. Yeah, I
love that song so much, andI it was a big I thought it
was a big hit at the timethat it came out, So when her
Hits record came out, I wasreally surprised that it wasn't on there.

(37:07):
But I do know, I knowthe title track did really well too,
Like the title track was a bunchbigger hit than I always give it credit
for. Like I don't I don'tdislike the title track at all, but
I don't love it either. Yeah, but for me, it's kind of
a retread of Last Level Anita thatshe did on Tri Blue cover the title
song for this. Uh. Butthis tour I kind of I wanted to

(37:27):
go to as a kid, andI didn't get to go to it.
Uh. The only actually the onlytime I ever saw me Dada was on
the tour after that, the BlindAmbission tour for the Like a Prayer record.
That was the only time I evergot to see her was on that
right on. The movie had likea seventeen to twenty million dollar budget and
it only made like, uh sevenpoint three million of the box off.
Just crazy. It's a fucking bomb, and that's what sucks is that it

(37:52):
is considered a bomb. Uh.But you know, again, the tour
and the soundtrack had commercial success, which I guess and A Hole kind of
helped pull money back into if thatwas all like tied into this project,
because I think the tour did liketwenty five million dollars in revenue over the
course of it of its run,and uh, Madonna went on to do

(38:15):
more successful like film stuff after this, which again I think it's a crime
that this wasn't. But the pointis is, like, you know,
if you if you see this andyou are just kind of like what the
fuck about it, look past thewhat the fuck and like give it a
shot. I really think a lotof people that have never heard of this
or have never given a chance likeshould and I think people love to get

(38:40):
that. I feel this movie stronglydeserves cult classic status, like they should
be a movie like people should getthe this is Wendy worthy or I had
her in the cab once jokes,or people should get the U for Murray
jokes and a loud and clear thinglike that should be a thing that's just
in pop culture that people quote. And I you know, I don't know

(39:05):
literally no one ever talks about thismovie ever. And it's like, you
know, some movies that like Ilike, for example, Clue is a
cult classic movie and it's in myopinion, one of the greatest comedies of
all time. Okay, so Iunderstand that not every movie that makes cult

(39:25):
classic status is like the greatest movieever made. And I'm not over here
saying, oh moves that girls thegreatest comedy ever made. But it's a
really really strong comedy. Like it'sa very very very good movie, and
I don't think it gets anywhere nearthe shake, did it. I know
it certainly didn't get the shake itdeserved when it came out, and I'm

(39:45):
stunned that it still hasn't. LikeI can't but with what an icon Madonna
is, like, how are peoplenot talking about, you know, more
like more of her early stuff, you know, the movie Wise, I
just I got it's it's puzzling tome, right, and who knows,
you know, maybe one day itwill, Like some of these movies don't

(40:07):
really find their footing. I knowit's been over thirty years since this movie
has come out, but a lotof films really don't find footing for even
longer than that sometimes. And youknow, I'm I'm a firm believer that
word of mouth still works to thisday. So if you are on Amazon
Prime or if you have YouTube Premiumor hell, if you have either one

(40:28):
of those, just a free trialyou can rent said it's three bucks to
go to just pay Google for it. Yeah, and it's and it's worth
every penny. It's you don't haveto go anywhere. You can just sit
on your fucking couch and check itout and you can have it for like
forty eight hours for three bucks, like my thing is too is And I
say this as an enormous Elvis Presleyfan. Uh you know Elvis movies are
all uh you know, Elvis wasa insert career here who could also sing

(40:52):
and then ends up getting the girlright, So like mechanic race car driver
whatever. You know, this isnot that, like this is my dad,
Like, yes, Madonna songs arein the movie, but at no
point did she stop and perform oryou know what I mean, Like it's
not her being a nikky finn isnot a singer in the movie like she.
I think it's great that they didn't. They very much could have made

(41:13):
this and it's a musical, youknow, starting the songs of Madonna,
and they absolutely didn't. You know, no, they leaned in her fucking
acting talent, which who you knowat the time, like who knows.
I had no idea that she hadcomic chops until we saw that movie.
I remember, I like, Itold you, dude, near the top
of the discussion. For a longtime, I thought, well, you

(41:36):
just like it because you just youjust think it's a good performance because it's
Madonna and you really like Madonna, you know. And then it literally when
you and I talked about doing this, I was like a month ago or
so. I watched the movie forthe first time in like twenty years,
and I was dying laughing at aton of stuff that I were like instantly
had instant and my wife had neverseen it before, and so she was

(41:58):
like pre laughing at things that sheknew was coming, Like you know,
I mean, like she could seewhere a scene was going, and she
was like, Oh God, thisis gonna be ridiculous. I thought it
was, and I thought about herwatching this too. I was like,
Oh, she's gonna be fucking tickledas shit watching half the stuff that's happening
in this movie. So yeah, and then we just watched it again like
last week, and you know,so it was her second time seeing it,

(42:21):
and it was even like when itwas coming up to scene like whatever,
let's say the mall scene or whatever, she was like, Oh,
she's gonna park the car sideway seeingshe was like already looking forward to stuff.
So I think it's one of thosethings where I think if people just
give this movie a chance, you'llbe at a bare minimum, you'll be
pleasantly surprised right on. Yeah, that's that's who's that girl from nineteen eighty

(42:44):
seven? Dude, thanks for comingand talk about this with me. I
was really happy that you suggested thisbecause like, until you had I was
like, fuck, I forgot aboutthis, you know what I mean.
It was one of those things likefun, I forgot about this movie.
Let's fucking do it. So yeah, sir, well, I'm glad you
knew about it because so many likeyou say, I thought for sure you
were going to be like, wellnot. I mean, you're you're a

(43:07):
man of the world. It's notlike you would not know about it.
But I thought for sure you werejust gonna be like, ah, yeah,
all that would go over. Butyou know what I mean, Like,
but like, thanks for giving themovie a chance to a spotlight,
a chance at a spotlight. Yeah, absolutely, I'm all about spotlighting shit
that doesn't get it. So andthen the other one that I mentioned to

(43:27):
you at the time, and we'llhave to do this somewhere else down the
road. Uh, but I kidyou not. I saw it in the
theater in the same month as thiswas summer school. Another classic nineteen eighty
seven Flack. Oh, absolutely,we'll definitely have I'm not kidding you.
I saw that movie like in thesame month, in the same in the
same theater. That's a that's athat's a Carl Carl Reiner film, So

(43:47):
yeah, I know, and he'sin it for like five seconds at the
beginning of the movie, right right. Yeah, we'll definitely have to do
that one for sure. Danny Elfmanto the score for that one too,
which I think wouldn't surprise a lotof people. So yes, But there's
a lot of things that would surprisepeople, and that the there's people that
went on to other things that you'dbe surprised with, and then there's it's
one of those things where it's theKirsty Ali trying to step out from cheers

(44:13):
and it's like, oh, youpick the wrong role. This is that
good? Yeah. But anyways, what I'm saying though, is when I
said to you, hey, here'stwo great movies that I love that I
think need more attention both of them, you were like, yes, we
should do those and which is whichis exactly what I was hoping for for
sure. Man, If if anybodyout there likes music, discussions. Russ,
