Barbro Alving slog igenom när hon, på uppdrag av Dagens Nyheter, rapporterade från OS i Berlin 1936.
Med sitt säregna tilltal blev hon Bang med hela svenska folket – som kåsör, recensent och allmänreporter befann hon sig påfallande ofta mitt i händelsernas centrum. Hon rapporterade från inbördeskriget i Spanien, finska vinterkriget, från Indien och Hiroshima efter atombomben.
Redan som barn deklarerade Barbro Alving att hon ville bli journalist. Och journalist blev hon, men inte utan bekymmer. Djupa depressioner plågade henne och allt som oftast tog hon till spriten.
