Under krigen ble jazz mer enn en musikksjanger, jazz var et politisk ståsted. Nazistene innførte strenge restriksjoner på hvilken musikk som kunne spilles, og hovedfienden var jazz. Samtidig brukte de allierte jazz som et viktig propagandaverktøy i radio.
Jazz var over alt, hjemme hos folk og i skyttergravene. Musikken ga folk mulighet for en midlertidig flukt fra krigens mørke virkelighet.
Selv om nazistene systematisk utryddet folket hans, og jazz ble sett på som degenerert musikk, var krigen en av de mest produktive fasene til Django Reinhardt.
