Etter ti år i eksil vendte Josephine Baker tilbake til hjemlandet med håp om at hun ville bli tatt imot med åpne armer. Hun raskt dratt ned på jorden igjen. I Europa var hun en stor stjerne, men i USA fikk hun ikke en gang bo på hotell på grunn av hudfargen.
Etter det ublide gjensynet med et segregert USA dro hun tilbake til et Europa som ulmet. Der ble hun kontaktet av den franske etterretningen, som var på utkikk etter personer som kunne brukes som hemmelige agenter.
