When there are so many different things going wrong or that feel like they're going wrong,it can be utterly overwhelming and you might feel like you don't even know where to start.
Welcome back to the Teach for the Heart podcast where we tackle teaching challenges from abiblical perspective.
Why are we here?
Because we don't believe our spiritual walk and teaching profession should exist in twoseparate domains.

(00:21):
Rather, the hope we have in Christ should change how we approach everything, not just athome, but at school as well.
So join us as we explore both the spiritual and practical sides of key teachingchallenges, integrating them together so we can succeed at teaching, glorify God, and make
a lasting difference in our students' hearts and lives.
This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Herzog Foundation.

(00:43):
Today, I wanna talk to you about this dilemma that can happen when we're feelingfrustrated as a teacher and kind of what are some next steps to get us unstuck.
So what can happen sometimes is that
It feels like there are so many different things that are going wrong.
So you might be like, you know, the kids are being, you know, there's so many disruptionsin the classroom and the kids are so apathetic and my admin's not supporting me and I'm so

(01:09):
overwhelmed by so much to do.
And, you know, this parent's upset and there's so many different things that we can getutterly overwhelmed and not know where on earth to start.
It can leave us feeling really hopeless in some cases, like
There's just no way anything could get better.
Things are so, so crazy.
It can also leave us feeling helpless because we're like, I don't know what to do.

(01:34):
There's so much going on.
It's so overwhelming.
I feel like I can't, I don't even know where to start.
So that's what we want to talk about today is if you are feeling like that, like, mygoodness, there's just so much going on.
What I want to do today in this program is try to help you take a step back, realize, okay,
It feels like everything, but it's actually these specific things and kind of identifywhat do I most need to tackle?

(02:01):
What problem could I make progress on?
And that would help.
It wouldn't solve everything, but it would be a big help.
And then you can go to the next one and the next one.
And I do think that's the first thing that I want to leave you with is when you feel likeso much is going on, it is important to step back, kind of get some clarity on the
situation, pray over it, but also to realize that

(02:22):
I can't solve 20 things at once, but I can work on one thing.
And so recognizing that and kind of getting clarity on where should I start.
And that's what we wanna talk about today.
So first of all, just to clarify, what are some of the things that might be on your list?
And so that's where we're start.
Number one, I would really recommend just grabbing a sheet of paper or if you're listeningto the car, as soon as you get to your destination, just jot down what are some of the

(02:48):
things that are frustrating you right now?
You might put down things like student behavior is crazy, or there's so many needs and Idon't know how to meet them.
There's disruptions and it's hard to teach.
My students aren't interested in learning or they're really distracted.
You might say there's so much negativity around me and all the teachers have low moraleand it's getting me down.

(03:08):
You might say my workload is never ending and I'm always getting more piled on.
Or there's unrealistic expectations that I don't feel like I can meet.
Or I'm just so tired.
I don't know if I can keep going.
I'm dealing with parents that are unkind or demanding, whatever's on your list.
Kind of jot it down and kind of just get it all out of your head and onto paper so thatyou can see, okay, what are the things that are frustrating me?

(03:33):
The next thing I'm gonna recommend that you do is kind of either star or pick like one, two, three, like of all the things you put down and, you know, could be, depending on your
situation, it could be a lot of different things.
Which of these are the most frustrating?
Right?
Some of them are just annoyances or things that bother you on occasion, but some are likeconstant or they're the biggest, like they're causing the biggest problems.

(03:57):
So kind of ask yourself, OK, if this weren't the case, how much better would I feel aboutit?
It looks like which ones are the really biggest frustrations and kind of identify that.
I wouldn't pick more than three at this point.
So just like top one, two or three is what you're looking at here.
OK, then here's a key question to consider.

(04:18):
for your top frustration or if you listed two or three, identifying are these in or out ofmy control?
In other words, are these areas where if I had more skill or more expertise, that mightmake a big difference and it might really help?

(04:38):
Or are these things that like I have no control over and I can't really fix thissituation?
Okay, so.
First of all, let me give some examples.
So first of all, classroom management.
If you say, okay, my students are really disruptive and I don't know what to do whenthey're disruptive.
Did you notice that phrase, I don't know what to do?

(05:01):
Well, that recognizes, okay, well, if I did know what to do and I could handle thisdifferently, this might be better.
Okay, so if there's something where you're like, I don't know what to do, I don't know howto handle this, right?
To do list sometimes is the same thing.
Sometimes it's like, OK, I'm so overwhelmed by this.
we might say, OK, people are piling stuff on.

(05:24):
But is there an aspect where, OK, if I could kind of figure out a better way to manage mytime, or if I could figure out how to do some of these things faster, or if I could let go
of some other things, then it would be better.
And I think sometimes, this is tricky.
Because I think sometimes we.
Sometimes we think things are in our control that actually aren't.

(05:46):
And sometimes we want to assume that we can't do anything about things that we actuallycan.
So a question that might help here is ask yourself honestly, are there any teachers inyour school that are in the same situation or very similar situation as you, but they seem
to not be having trouble with this area?

(06:07):
They're succeeding in this area in the same circumstances, okay?
So with classroom management, it's like, okay, we have the same students, but when they goover there, they're good.
And then, or in my class, they're horrible.
Okay, well then maybe that teacher, maybe there is a skill difference or a strategydifference.
Like maybe there are strategies or skills or, you know, it is possible.

(06:29):
Same thing with workload.
If you notice, well, some teachers, they aren't so overwhelmed by this workload andthey're still doing a good job.
How come they can do it and I can't?
Then that kind of shows you, hey, there might be.
a way to do this.
is possible.
So don't be discouraged by that.
Don't be discouraged by the fact that it's working for them and not for me.
That should be a hopeful thing in recognizing, OK, this is possible.

(06:53):
I might have a lack of experience, or I might have some strategies that I'm not aware of,or I might need to grow my skills in this area.
Hopefully that makes sense.
Let me give you some examples, though, of things that are outside your control.
So you might recognize.
I have an admin who's not giving me the support I want in my classroom and that's reallyfrustrating me.

(07:13):
Well, what the admin does is outside of your control.
So if you're frustrated by something someone else is doing, that's outside your control.
If you're frustrated because you don't feel like you know how to handle it, that'ssomething that is more in your control, if that makes sense.
So unkind parents, I can't control what they do.
I feel like the evaluation system at my school isn't fair.

(07:34):
You can't control the evaluation system.
So kind of identifying which of these things are things that I have some control over andwhich are things that are outside my control.
What are things that maybe I need to, it's my, I need to know how to respond to them, okay?
So that's kind of the thinking there, which is in my control, what is outside of control.

(07:55):
And then once again, that honest question, are there others who are doing well at thiswhere I'm struggling?
And if so, that's hopeful, okay, then maybe it is, maybe there is something that couldhappen.
Okay, so that's number three, kind of being really honest about which of these things arethings where if I, you know, maybe there's skill or expertise or practices I could learn
to handle this better and what are things that honestly it's like it's what someone elseis doing, it's not in my control.

(08:23):
The next question is, ask yourself what would be the biggest help for you, okay?
And particularly, so once again, looking back at your list and the things you starred,
and the things that you identified, do you feel like the thing you need most is to solvesome of these problems that are in your control?

(08:46):
Or do you need to not be so discouraged about things outside your control or know how torespond to things outside your control?
Okay, let me explain this again.
So there's kind of two different possibilities here when you get to this point.
You might identify an area of need and you might say,
Let me give a few examples to walk through this.

(09:08):
you might say, okay, there are so many disruptions in my classroom and when they happen, Idon't know what to do about them.
I don't know how to respond to them.
So you might say, man, if I knew how to respond to these disruptions and I could get thelevel of chaos down in my classroom, I would feel so much better.
I would solve so many things.
Like that would make the biggest difference.

(09:30):
Okay, so you would recognize, okay, what I really need is to learn
how to handle all these disruptions and how to get them under control, okay?
On the other hand, something in a similar area, if you were to recognize, I'm actuallyreally frustrated by the number of needs in my classroom.
There are so many needs in my classroom and my admin isn't supporting me.

(09:52):
And you might say, I'm actually doing, think a pretty good job handling all of these.
I don't really think I could do it much better.
But I'm just really frustrated by it.
You might actually recognize, OK, what I actually need help with is not what to do in theclassroom because I think I'm actually doing about as good as possible.

(10:12):
But I need help dealing with the mental load of this.
I need help not getting so down and discouraged and frustrated by the circumstances thatI'm in because these circumstances are outside of my control.
can't control who's in my class or how much the admin supports me.
And I think I'm actually pretty skilled in what I'm currently doing.
So that would say, okay, I need something, I need help with discouragement.

(10:35):
So hopefully that's helpful to kind of think that through and just really identify isthere an area where there's skills or expertise that I need to grow in or do I need help
with my attitude and that area?
And so that's going to send you in different directions to look for help, okay?
And then that's my next encouragement is to.

(10:58):
Sometimes I think we are too quick to assume it's unfixable.
There's nothing that can be done.
Now I say first of all, we have a great God who loves to work and to help us in ourcircumstances.
So if you're not regularly praying about whatever these main problems are, start bypraying about them, especially the one you identify as like, if this one thing would be

(11:19):
really helpful if I could either fix this or figure out how to handle this in my heart.
Start praying about that, asking God to lead you to
the help you need or to change your heart.
So pray about it.
That in and of itself is going to make a difference because God loves to work in ourhearts.
He loves to guide us to what he has and that peace can come right away when we startpraying about it.

(11:43):
So pray and ask God for help and then seek out solutions.
Find someone.
Is there a teacher at your school or a mentor that you can go to and say, hey, this iswhat I'm struggling with.
What do you think I should do?
The internet, there's so many resources out there.
And then, you can start searching and Googling and just asking friends and colleagues.

(12:03):
And we also have a lot of things here at Teach for the Heart that are specificallydesigned to help with some of these specific situations.
So I don't wanna leave you without telling you about some of the specific things we dohave here at Teach for the Heart.
Okay, so let me share with you real quick three specific things that might be exactly whatyou're looking for.
Okay, so first of all,

(12:23):
is a brand new program that we just put together called Hope Renewed.
And the goal of Hope Renewed is to help you stop feeling defeated and face each day withhope.
So this is absolutely perfect if you've identified, you know, the things I'm frustratedabout are largely outside my control.
It's not my circumstances that I wish my circumstances would change, but I don't have thepower to change them.

(12:47):
And so what I really need is help with my attitude, with my outlook.
with being able to actually, you know, kind of bear up under all these pressures that arearound me, then that is exactly what Hope Renewed is for.
And so you can find out about it at teachfortheheart.com slash hope renewed.
And right now, I think for like one or two more days, we're having a, just a releasespecial on it where you can use the coupon code hope to save 40%.

(13:15):
So teachfortheheart.com slash hope renewed, use the coupon code hope.
Once again, this is for those
that are saying, yeah, what I actually need is help bearing up under this.
How do I actually trust God with these problems?
How do I actually have hope and joy and not get so discouraged by all these things thatare frustrating me?
So that's hope renewed.
Number two, classroom management 101.

(13:37):
So if you've thought about it and you're like, okay, it's the behavior issues that aredriving me nuts.
And it's the fact that I don't know what to do about them, okay?
Or I feel like what I am doing isn't effective.
And I think, you know, I see these other teachers and they're able to do it and I'm not.
So classroom management 101 will help you get those skills, put together a plan that'sgoing to help you know how to deal with those things.

(14:01):
So you can get more information enjoying classroom management 101 at teachfortheheart.comslash cm101.
And in a minute, I'm going to give you a coupon code that works on all of these.
So teachfortheheart.com slash cm101.
And then the third resource is reclaim your time.
If you've recognized, okay, I am really overwhelmed by my to-do list, okay, and you mightbe tempted to think this is nothing I can do, I'm getting all this stuff put on me.

(14:29):
But more often than not, there is a lot we can do.
There's parts that are out of our control, but there's a lot you can do to change, tobasically kind of look at your big to-do list and get actually really clear on which of
these things matter most, which of these things can I let go of, which things can I domore quickly.
and we have so many practical things, really quick lessons designed to fit into a busylife.

(14:54):
So we'd love to help you in reclaim your time.
So you can go to teachfortheheart.com slash reclaim to get specific help.
If that's what you've identified as, that's what I need the most.
For all of these, you can use the code podcast20 to save 20%.

(15:17):
And I also wanted to mention too, our program Teach for the Heart Plus.
So Teach for the Heart Plus is basically all of our best programs plus mentor support, plus weekly encouragement right to your phone.
So if you say, Linda, there's a lot that I need help with and I kind of want to do allthese things, well Teach for the Heart Plus might be the great way to go.

(15:37):
I still recommend picking one to start with and doing one at a time, but in Teach for theHeart Plus, as soon as you finish one thing, you can hop right into the next and you're
gonna be getting that biblical encouragement.
and have that mentor support to ask questions all along the way.
So you can find out more about that at teachfortheheart.com slash plus.
