Den danske filosofen Sören Kierkegaard gör i sin bok Fruktan och bävan från 1843 en analys av berättelsen. Han ställer en rad frågor om religion och etik, inte minst ställer han Abrahams mänskliga ansvar för sin son mot plikten gentemot Gud.
