(00:03):
Welcome to the nerd Party. Hello, and welcome to the A twenty four
project. Here in the Nerd Partynetwork, my name is Lee Hutchinson and
Dallas King and I make our waythrough the A twenty four filmography and along
the way bring you interviews with thetalent involved in front of and behind the
(00:23):
camera. Right now, hot offthe heels of the release of Maxine,
the Third and Tie West and MayaGoth's series following the journey of Pearl and
Maxine, we welcome Charlie Rowan McCain, who plays the young Maxine Miller.
Maxine opens with Charlie portraying Maxine allthe way back in nineteen fifty nine,
showcasing that early star talent while shootingan audition opposite her father Ernest. Charlie
(00:48):
shares her experience of shooting her firstfilm, working with Ty West, meeting
Mia Goth, what the industry isreally like for young talent like herself,
and taking on the iconic role ofMaxine. Thank you so much Charlie for
joining us, and I hope youtoo will enjoy this interview. So,
Charlie, how did you get involvedin acting? Well? I got involved
(01:11):
in acting because both of my parentsare actually in the industry, and so
I learned a lot of like fromthem, like about their favorite directors,
their favorite actors, and we usedto not used to. We always watch
a bunch of movies together, andso like they when we started auditioning,
(01:33):
they kind of like told me theprocess of like how it is to audition,
like what kind of happens, andso they guided me through that,
which was honestly a blessing. Andwhat are some of your kind of favorite
films and actors who do you lookup to? So I am a huge
musical theater kid, which will definitelybe revealed in this interview. I love
(01:55):
Pitch Perfect all three, especially twoand three. I love one, but
when the whole like group is togetherin two and three, I love that.
I love Newsy's, I love MarcelMichelle, I love Pretty and Pink.
I definitely love that one. Ilove other ones like Legally Blonde because
(02:15):
I love Reese Witherspoon so much. And I don't know if a lot of
people know about this one, butI went on a trip with my mom
in January, and I like bingewatch She's the Man fifteen times over and
over again with Amanda Bndes and Ilove it nice. And what kind of
actors do you look up to?You do you look up to maybe someones
that are maybe kind of older,or actors in around you're sort of age.
(02:38):
So I really admire actors that I'velike seen in things that really stand
out to me. So I loveAnna Kendrick again back to Pitch Perfect,
and Jeremy Jordan is just like agreat on stage actor. I love Indina
Manzel. I think she's just soawesome. I love Emma Stone, I
love all the Emmas. I loveEmma Watson and Emma Thompson. All of
(03:01):
the Emmas are amazing. I loveKeegan Michael Key. He's so funny.
I love him so much. Andthen also I love Leslie Odom Junior's performance
as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, likethe recorded just in general Awestome. That
is a a really cool range ofpeople. And I know everyone likes to
discuss like who's your favorite Chris,it sounds like maybe people need to start
(03:23):
doing Who's your favorite Emma exactly. So you mentioned sort of like you have
kind of family connections. How haveyou kind of broken into to the industry
yourself? So I it was likelots of parent helping because it's kind of
like confusing on how to like getinto it. But I know that when
(03:45):
I was around five or six,I started doing print and commercials with an
agent that we found and it wassuper fun and it's super cool and I
had like a lot of fun doingit. And then I think when I
was I got another agent which didway more commercials, and like I started
getting movie and TV show auditions. But then in twenty twenty two or somewhere
(04:13):
around there, I started doing theaterat my community theater, and then I
started like really getting into theater fromthere. And after I did like a
huge show there it was Matilda, where I was Matilda, I got a
manager and then we started doing likeall these TV shows and movies auditions,
and like that's how it basically likestarted from there, and as it got
(04:38):
easier, I suppose I think ofit like before COVID, probably when you
were maybe not really had started asan actor like it used to be,
you'd always have to go to thesethings in person. Do you do a
lot of yours kind of virtually onzoom like we are just now, So
I do like if I get acallback or like a director session, it
probably will be on zoom. Somehave been in person, but I think
(05:00):
after COVID hit, it was kindof easier to like film auditions because you
didn't have to be there on thespot and you can always like redo takes
and like really get the character down, so they don't just see you once
and then they're like, I don'tknow, maybe we want to see more
because it's always easier to like filmon camera. So yeah, definitely sometimes
(05:23):
again do it on zoom, butnever Usually for auditions, it's usually just
like a ring light and a backdropand then we film and send it in.
But yeah, and so what aresome of the challenges for young people
in Hollywood? Like, I don'tknow, is it difficult like juggling school
and going for auditions and so on. Yeah, so I've had a couple
(05:43):
of challenges. I think I'm veryI'm a very extroverted person, and I
have so many like friends that areactors, but I also have like a
handful of friends that are just likelike normal kids who like do soccer tournaments
and all that stuff and not justactors, And so when I'm around them,
(06:05):
they don't and they like invite meto like a birthday party or something,
and I'm like, I can't reallybecause I'm acting. And they're like,
oh, that's okay, because theydon't really get like the things that
you put into acting. So that'skind of one of the troubles. But
then the one that I've really likehad to face was I go to public
school. And I know lots oflike kids that are actors, and they
(06:26):
like really do this. I knowthey like either go home school or they
do online school, or like halfin school, half out of school.
And so I think being full timein public school it's really fun because you
get to make lots of friends, but also like the absences and like being
away from school is also like achallenge for me. Even though you have
(06:47):
like school on set, I feellike it's just different because when you learn
from your teacher at school, thenit just like shows a different thing.
We I've heard so many times overthe years about kids that are starting TV
shows or films having that kind ofschool experience on set. What's that kind
of like? Oh, okay,So I love set school. It's so
(07:10):
fun. I've loved every single oneof my set teachers that I've had over
all the years. They're always sofun and energetic and they make sure you
get your work done, which Ireally like. There's been a couple of
teachers that have really been like,Okay, we're off set now, we
can play some games, we cando your work. We just need to
(07:33):
get school work done. And Ireally appreciate that that it's not just like
Lucy Goosey, like, oh yeah, you can do like journal writing,
or you can play like roadblocks orsomething. It has to be like learning
based and I really like that.So I obviously know you originally from from
Maxine, but you've been in quitea lot of other TV shows, adverts,
(07:54):
et cetera. Can you tell usa little bit about some of your
favorite other rules some of my favoriteother rules. So my first TV show
role was in MCIs and I gotto play like a little German girl named
Heidi, and I really loved it. That was just like such a cool
first experience for like huge like onset. And then I was I played
(08:18):
like a guest starring role in SWATand the Nickelodeon show Aaron and Aaron,
and so those all three of thosewere for one episode. And then I
did a couple of theater roles,Like I said, at my community theater,
I played young Anna in Frozen Junior, I played Matilda and Matilda and
(08:39):
at it was my first professional theater, I played one of the orphans in
Oliver and I really liked that.So when did you first hear about the
opportunity for Maxine? So when Ifirst heard about the opportunity for Maxine,
it was we just got an emailfrom just an email. Yeah, we
(09:01):
got the audition, and it wasit was like it said Puritan Too,
which is the movie inside of Maxine, because they didn't want to like tell
you exactly what movie was, andso it was like any other audition,
like ooh, we got it.We got an audition, let's film it,
let's learn the lines, and sowe knew it was We knew the
(09:22):
character was Maxine because it was youngMaxine. And so it did say like
this is the line that Miagau saysan X, And so we looked up
the scene and it was her sayingI will not accept a life I do
not deserve in X. And sowe kind of learned her mannerisms and like
(09:43):
her accent and really got that down. And then we auditioned for it,
sent it in and waited and howlong did you have to weigh and what
did they kind of say afterwards?Did they get you in person? What
was the kind of the next step. So the next step was within probably
like two or three days, theyI figured out that they pinned me.
(10:05):
They did it via email and theywere like, Charlie is one of the
pinned for vaccine or for pureton too, and we were all so excited.
We were all like what, thisis crazy. And it was like like
I had been pinned for commercials orlike print before, but never really for
like a movie. And I waslike, whoa, this is cool.
(10:26):
And so the next I think itwas like the next day or the next
two days, my mom came upto me and she said because I was
laying on the couch and I waslike playing on my apad and my mom
came over and she said, hey, Charlie, you remember that film that
you were pinned for? And Iwas like yeah, and she had her
phone out, so I knew itwas good news. And she was like,
(10:46):
you booked it, and I justwent crazy. I was like,
what, that's insane, that's amazing, and obviously kind of obviously you've watched
some of of kind of ex andPearl, but they're both kind of are
rare films. Did you watch themall or was it just sort of watching
kind of a couple of the coupleof the scenes, because it's definitely quite
(11:07):
a special film in some respects.Yeah. So I've heard about the films,
like through my mom's friends, throughlike lots of other people that I
know, and so people were alreadyraving about the films. And then I
was like, maybe I can watcha couple of the scenes because I know
it's R rated, but we'll findthe kid appropriate stuff. And so I
(11:31):
watched, like again that I willnot accept a life I do not deserve,
and I watched like lots of thekid friendly scenes that my parents found.
And also in Perl, I likewatched the Pearl dance that she did
because I had to learn it forbeing on set since that's part of my
scene. And did you kind oflike obviously you had friends and family telling
(11:54):
you like how big these films were, but did you realize how kind of
iconic the role of Maxine was. That it's crazy to think like people have
tattoos over like people dress up asher. She's become quite an iconic kind
of go to character, definitely,And when I auditioned for it, like
I knew that she was a characterthat was already out there and I would
(12:15):
play the young version of her,but I didn't know like what a tremendous
role that was, and like howbig of a character that was. And
so I think I like really realizedit after the movie was filmed and everything
like soaked in and it was likeMaxine is coming out soon, and then
I was like, whoa, I'ma part of this film. This is
(12:35):
huge. So and did you wereyou quite familiar with like me a Goth
who plays kind of the older versionof Maxine sort of before before this opportunity
came up. No, I actuallyhadn't heard of me a Goth before,
But as soon as I got theaudition again, they referenced her and I
was like, WHOA, I dolook like her, and because we both
(12:56):
had this sort of like raised eyebrowsand stuff, and so oh I heard
of her and then now I can'tstop hearing of her. Yeah, it's
crazy. A few years ago Iinterviewed her here in Edinburgh for where I
went to see Maxine last week.I actually interviewed her in that cinema maybe
seven years ago for a film calledMarybone, and then a couple of years
(13:18):
ago I interviewed her down in Londonat the Red Carpet for Suspiria, which
I don't know if you've maybe seenthose films. So I feel like I've
been able to interview both both theyoung and old versions over it. Now.
That's so fun. So between kindof being cast in this film and
your first day on set, howdid you sort of prepare for the film
(13:39):
and were you able to tell peopleyou've been cast in this film? So
I was able to tell people thatI've been cast in this film, but
I wasn't really able to like saywhat it was yet or like I was
like it's TBD. But all Ican tell you is that I was cast
in a movie. And all myfriends were like freaking out. They were
like, Charlie, that's so coolbecause I was still nine when I got
(14:01):
cassed, so it was like yeah, and then I was just like it
was like insane to finally figure outlike this is my this is my first
movie, like not just like anyother thing, this is my first movie.
And I like got to tell everyone, like once the news was kind
(14:22):
of out and I like ended filmingit. I was like, it's maccine
and everyone freaked out even more nice. So what was your first day on
set? Like where did you shootyour your scene? So I only had
one scene, it's the first scenein the movie. And so when I
got on set, I like dida little thing with my set teacher,
(14:43):
you like learned. We did somework and then they called me down to
do hair and makeup, and thenafter that we went to the tent which
they used in X and it's likethe one where in X the dad goes
like, my daughter's missing, sheran away, you know. And so
(15:03):
I did the dance and like mylittle scene in there, and it was
like really hot that day, butit was so super fun. They had
like a bunch of water for meafter every take. It was just so
fun, and my mom and myset teacher were sitting there and they were
like watching me and supporting me,and it was so fun. Nice.
And did you enjoy recreating the danceroutine as a musical theater kind of fan?
(15:26):
Did you get enjoy being able toshowcase your skills? Definitely that was
one of my favorite parts. Iloved the dance so much. It's so
fun, it's so quirky, andit overall just like I know it was
Maxine's character, but also it feelslike me, So I feel like I
can relate to young Maxine in thatway. And what way do you kind
of relate to to young Maccine?Like you can tell she's someone that wants
(15:48):
to be a star, loves acting. Is that something as you kind of
can relate to yourself? Yeah, definitely. I was telling a couple of
people this how it actually feels crazythat this was the first movie role because
it feels so much like me,because I am someone that's always wanted to
be an actor, Like even inkindergarten, I think they did like what
(16:11):
do you want to be when yougrow up? And I was like,
I want to be an actor likefor career day and here we are today
even when I'm ten. That waslike when I was five and now I'm
ten and I'm in a movie andthat's crazy. And was it a hard
dance routine to kind of pick upor was it quite quite an easy one?
So I think it was easier becauseI actually like had a video to
(16:33):
reference off of. I mean,if it was like a choreographer too,
like just sending a video saying here, this is what we kind of want
you to do, like that wouldbe easy, but it was easier to
see someone actually like perform it.So I knew like how to like carry
myself when I performed it, andso I it was a really it was
a really fun process learning the dancebecause the whole team sent it to me
(16:59):
and they were like, hey,Charlie, can you learn this dance?
We're gonna use it for the movie, but we just want to have a
reference clip so that you know whatit's like. And so I practiced it
for about two or three weeks, and then one day my mom was like,
hey, you know the same Tiewanted you to do for like the
reference clip, and I was likeyeah, and she was like, we're
just gonna film it today, andso we went into my school cafeteria and
(17:22):
we filmed the video for Tie andwe sent it to him and then he
was like, Wow, that's amazing. Do the same thing on set and
it'll be perfect. And obviously theroutine Kina came quite easy. What was
it like with the the accent, for example, with that sort of southern
draw that Maxine has. So Ithink it really helped being able to have
clips of the older her, becausewhen you're playing a younger version, you
(17:47):
always like want to like see thecharacter that you're playing before, and so
it was really helpful that those twomovies came out before this one where I
play young Maxine, And so Ithink the accent was definitely easier because I
got to watch her accent, likeit would kind of be weird if this
was the first movie and like shelike I didn't know what her accent was,
(18:11):
so I just did a Southern accentand that it didn't sound like her
in the movie when she was older. And so I think it was definitely
helpful to have reference clips. Anddid you get a chance to maybe speak
to me a goth before you tookon the role of young Maxine or did
you have to meet her later on? So I didn't meet her before I
got the role. I met heron set while we were while I got
(18:34):
my makeup done, and we werejust kind of talking about like, hi,
how are you all that fun ofstuff, and then like like kind
of like how many pets do youhave like all this sort of basic questions,
not really questions about like do youknow what this characters about or something?
And it was really fun. Didyou sit there thinking at one point
(18:56):
when this is what I could looklike in twenty third eight years for example,
seeing the older version of Definitely? And I think he was also really
helpful for the makeup stylists that werethere so that they could because she already
had her makeup done. I thinkshe was getting her hair done that time,
and I was sitting there and theywere doing my makeup, so they
(19:18):
needed the reference freckles for it.And I think that really helped. And
how was ty West as a directorwith you? So Ty West, who
wasn't just a director, He wasalso the cameraman for my scene, which
I don't know if he was forlots of other scenes, but I thought
it was really cool and flattering thathe was also the cameraman for my scene.
And I actually have never had thatwhere a director is like a cameraman
(19:45):
and a director, and so Iwas like wow. And when he filmed
it, he was just super cooland he was like, yeah, that
was a perfect take. Let's justdo one more to make sure we're safe
because you know, we don't wantto come back here later. And it
was just so fun. I lovedit. That's amazing. And you know,
I heard that they started using likeold school cameras and equipment. Was
(20:07):
that something that was quite different foryou? So I didn't really feel quite
different, because I, like,I had seen cameras before, but I
didn't really know the difference between them. And so now I kind of like,
so I saw like the first twoscenes at the premiere because those were
the only two appropriate scenes that Icould see or it got a little crazy,
(20:32):
and so I did that. Iwatched it, and but after watching
the first couple of scenes, Idid see that, like the cameras were
a little like how do you sayblurry? Like it was like old school
cameras, like blurry like film kindof things, not just like digital cameras.
And I and now I realized that, but I didn't know that it
(20:56):
was like a different kind of cameraback then. And you got to have
not just like the iconic kind ofdance, but the line as well,
which you mentioned. You know, did you feel a bit of pressure because
obviously you knew beforehand it's kind ofa popular line. But did you feel
like a bit of pressure taking somethinglike that on? It's almost like the
Maxine version of may the Force bewith you or something like that. Yeah.
(21:18):
I mean when I first auditioned forit, I knew that it was
a line that she says, butI didn't know how iconic of a line
it was. And then it's againlike one of those old like the old
school camera question. So it waslike I didn't really know how iconic it
was until the premiere and I waslike, Wow, everybody loves this line.
(21:41):
And then it was even before thepremiere, I think too, everyone
was like, wow, the lineis coming back again. They're saying the
line again, and it was likeso fun. And did you have kind
of Simon pressed with you use you'reon screen father? Like obviously hear him
in the film, but was hethere on the day kind of working with
you you? Yeah, so hewas there on the day. He was
(22:02):
super cool. I think he wasin his sunglasses and like a cool jacket
and he was just like children andleaning against the tent wall. I didn't
really get to like fully meet andshake hands with him, but I got
to say hi. I was like, Hi, I'm Charlie I play young
Vaccine and he was like, oh, that's cool. And then when we
filmed the scene, he was kindof in the back of the tent and
who I was talking to because theydidn't want to just put a voice over
(22:26):
and I would like have like aneye line, So I think that was
way easier for me too. Butyeah, he was actually in the room
when I film my scene. Sowhat was your kind of favorite moment of
kind of shooting that scene and lookingback on sort of your kind of making
a shooting your scene of Maxine.I think my favorite part was like believing
that I could actually do it,because I remember how I was a little
(22:49):
bit nervous to like do the dancein front of everyone when I first got
there, because I was like,I know that I have performed on stage
and I know I have done thisbefore, but like will it be different
because they're like directors and producers andstuff there, and so I kind of
got nervous before I got there, and then when I finally did it,
I was like, this is easy, peasy, I can do this.
(23:10):
And I think that was my favoritepart, like believing in myself and then
showing my full capability. And youmentioned this is like gear your first film.
How did it compare to say shootingTV. What did you enjoy more?
What did you find maybe a bitharder? So I didn't like I
think it was just like I enjoyedit more because it felt like more of
(23:30):
a bigger deal because it was amovie. But it didn't really feel like
different otherwise with like like camera equipmentand just like equipment itself. But it
did feel different with the sets becauseit was way bigger sets that I had
seen before. And there were abunch of rooms and like like whole reference
(23:52):
houses that they had us do likewildlines in and that was fun. So
you've mentioned you got to tend thepremiere and it wasn't just like any premier
like that chonic Chinese theater. They'dlike fake protest signs. What was thatience?
Like? I can imagine that beinglike, oh my god, is
this real kind of thing? Yeah? So we I was like getting ready
at a hotel right nearby, andso we came out through the mall that
(24:15):
was connected to the hotel and itwas me, my manager and my parents
and we like walked out. Wesaw everyone in their like amazing dresses and
suits ready for their premiere, andeveryone was like, I'm so excited to
see this. And then and thenno one really knew why I was there.
They just kind of saw me ina little red dress and they're and
(24:37):
they like. I didn't really hearanyone talking about it. I was just
kind of walking by, and itseemed kind of weird being the only kid
there. I mean, it's anR rated film. But then we got
there, we saw my what's itcalled my publicist, and so we saw
her, and then I saw theprotest signs and I almost immediately I was
(25:00):
like, what is happening. Arethese people like not supporting the movie or
something? And my mom was like, no, they're actors. And I
was like, oh thank god, because everyone scared me with like protect our
children, and I was like, huh, but I'm in this movie,
and so that really like kind ofscared me going into it. But then
I was like, oh, yougot this. You prepared for this.
(25:22):
And so I went with my publicistand we walked down like the front of
the red carpet, not like whereall the pictures were yet, and everyone
was like Charlie, Charlie, Charlieand It was so fun because I've always
like seen scenes and looked at picturesof like all my favorite actresses and actors
like being on the red carpet andlike people screaming their names, and then
(25:42):
it finally happened to me and Ithought that was so cool. And then
when I walked down and I gotto do the interviews, I also loved
that too. Nice. And thenwhat was it like to be inside the
theater? So obviously, if theJoy is your first scene, everything everyone
that watched the film will see youfirst. What was that like? Could
you seen your scene beforehand? Orwas there a lot of nerves thinking I'm
(26:04):
gonna knowing Europe first? So Iwas nervous thinking I was at first,
But I was also really excited tolike see my hard work pay off.
And so I had seen it beforebecause my parents like went to like the
like first seven minutes of it wherethey got to see that, and they
(26:26):
showed me a video of it,and I was like, Wow, that's
awesome, and so I like wentin and we sat down. We all
found our seats, and we weretowards the back of the theater so we
could leave quickly, Like after myscene and I was just sitting there in
awe. The curtains came open,ty West came out, me, a
(26:48):
goth came out, Halsey, allthese amazing actors, and then I was
like, wow, Wow, it'shappening, and then the curtains roads and
then it played on screen and itwas like huge, just my face for
a whole minute and thirty seconds. It was awesome, and I felt so
special and I loved watching me likeon screen because I had seen that before,
(27:14):
like with my TV stuff. Butit felt surreal to actually be like
invited to the premiere and then beingable to see it. And actually,
funniest story the guy who was sittingnext to us, he was like kind
of like a super fan, andso we saw that he was testing one
of his friends and saying, ohmy gosh, little Maxine is sitting next
to me. And then at myscene he wished me congratulations, and I
(27:40):
said, thank you so much. Was it one of those ones did you
just wish you could stay and watchthe whole film or was it just like
walking it afterwards? Tough? Definitely, and if it wasn't R rated then
I couldn't. But we can't allhave our victories. Sometimes one day,
one day you'll get to see it. So what's good? So what's kind
(28:00):
of coming next for yourself after yourexperience of Maccine. So I've been working
on a lot of voiceovers. I'mgonna be in a Netflix show that's coming
out TBD and I'm a series regular. It's like a play school preschool animation
show and I'm the villain. Sowatched out. A couple of short films
(28:22):
and student films that I've been inare coming out like the summer and this
fall, and so I'm so excitedto go see those because they're going like
to short film festivals and I'm invitedto both of those like Premiere. And
then I'm also doing some like Marvelvoiceovers, some Disney voiceovers, some again
(28:42):
Netflix voiceovers, and I did somedubbing for an Hbdo voiceover. Amazing,
So a lot to look forward to. Yeah, And I'm also going to
be in a play that opens tomorrowand it's at the same community theater that
I've been doing for about two orthree years. Awesome, we'll break a
leg tomorrow. And you mentioned Marcelthe Shell with Shoes On. Do you
(29:06):
have any other favorite A twenty fourfilms, So I'm definitely looking forward to
watching more A twenty four films, but I've my favorite one that I've watched
is Marcel Michelle. I love thatmovie so much and it's just so sweet,
and I love the stop motion.I haven't seen like a really great
stop motion for a long time, and they really brought the piece to life.
(29:27):
And so I'm so excited to seemore twenty a more A twenty four
films, But as for now,I love Marcel Michelle and Maxine. Yeah,
there's not too many films aimed atyounger audiences so far. It's aimed
at older folk like me. Solet's look forward to in a few years
time. I'm kind of fundly. You mentioned all these exciting projects that you've
(29:51):
