Speaker 2 (00:40):
What is happening? I'm Rob blood quest.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Tonight I'm be and we are the e indoors Hello everyone, Hi,
Hi buddy, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I'm good. How are you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
You know, I'm doing very well. It's a beautiful day
here in Minni Sous. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
It's always so funny whenever we start. It's just we give,
we give the weather report, and it's.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
All I have.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Otherwise makes me laugh. Good. I think that's exciting. We
have our our Minnesota Timberwolves are currently in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, they looked pretty bad last night. It was game
two last night.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah, they looked really good. The game before that, so
they looked so who knows. The one thing that.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
I'm excited about is that that's the worst we've looked
offensively in a minute, maybe ever this while, at least
when we've been all healthy. And the fact that they
only beat us by nine points, Yeah, I feel like
that's not going to happen again.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
But fan bases are probably like, oh, because quite the
tale of two cities with those two first games.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
So who knows, it's weird, it's weird. Yeah, both Lebron
and Luca just couldn't hit anything towards the end, and
that won't be the case either, who knows, I don't know, but.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
To score two hundred next game, like who knows?
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Right, but just such a weird like looked like a
completely different team, at least offensively.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Oh yeah, well, first we went from hitting what twenty
one threes to I think there was seven mad for
the whole game between them teams, and we just all
year thirty or something. Yucky, So yucky poopy.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
That's one exciting thing, the wild one which.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
They split the first two, right, but they've looked good.
I know you don't really watch hockey.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
But don't I wish I did, because, yeah, that would
have been exciting to watch that big win. I'm going
to dude, dude, it started a ten to fifteenth central dump.
It's awful, super dumb. Tomorrow is exciting because I'm going
to the Twins game with my dad. All fun.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
That'll be great, which.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Will be cool, even though the Twins are struggling hard.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Yeah, and I was so bad when we talk about
them because I'm like, I there, who I don't really
pay attention to you know, the same sames.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
But it's kind of crummy so far, third worst team
in baseball, in all of baseball pretty much up season left,
you know, so much for better or worse, like one
hundred and forty more games.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
That's crazy, that's crazy.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, it's a lot.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Hopefully they'll figure it out. I don't know who knows
fingers either way, it'll be beautiful tomorrow. You guys are
gonna have a nice time for sure. Excited you will
have that. So that's nice. Have you been watching any
films lately?
Speaker 2 (03:35):
I have? Thank you for asking. We got sick over
Easter weekend, because that's what we do.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
That is that is tradition. I guess at this point we.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Just get sick. So Charlie had gotten strap throat and
had to stay home from school on Friday, and then
Lydia got sick Saturday, but not Strap, which is interesting.
But regardless, we weren't going to going to my folks
for Easter, right, So I brought Charlie, who wasn't contagious anymore,
on Easter Sunday to see the Minecraft movie, which I
(04:10):
know you had talked about wanting to see with us,
and I was like, we're all kind of getting all
your stuff.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
What did you guys think?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Well, throughout the movie, my throat started feeling itchy and
I got strapped throat as well.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Oh my god, So I'm glad you didn't invite me though.
There you were right about that.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yes, it's just a bunch of fun over here.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Just share everything.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
It was nice spreading the sickness, but yeah, Minecraft movie
was pretty fun.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Jack Black is just straight up being Jack.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
Black, silly billy man. I like him.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
He just says the text and the most Jack Black
way possible.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Yeah, that's great.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
I'm sure you've seen it from the previous But at
one point he walks into a room and says, these
are some of my treasures and it's just like you.
It makes that funny. Yeah, just saying it silly. The
plot is pretty thin. I've seen better movies for sure.
Jason Momoa was either really funny or kind of cringey
(05:20):
throughout the movie. But yeah, it's definitely worth checking out.
If you are a fan of Jack Black, you will
have fun.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, I'm excited to see you at some point. It's
gonna be great.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, there was this one part, so there are these
like mean pigs. They're like of like exactly, there's one
really mean one and to like prove how mean she was,
she like pretty much kills one of these little pigs
and Charlie. That really really upset Charlie. We talked about
(05:54):
that for a long time and it was like a
ten seconds scene.
Speaker 3 (06:00):
He was like a sweet little tender boy.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
I love it it is. But like the scene it was,
they were looking for somebody or whatever, and but he
sees this little pig that's like doing a drawing and
the drawing is just like this really pretty picture, and
they're like, how is that helping me find whatever? And
then boom and he's gone, and but he was just
(06:25):
wanting to draw.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
He just felt love in his heart, just drawing this
beautiful picture.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
And oh gosh, I love that kid so much.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
I'm just glad that in some small way, having me
as a friend has prepped you for fatherhood, it seems,
because you've had to have the same talk with me,
so you're ready.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah, just a sweet, sweethearted boy.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
That's amazing that.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
But what what have you been watching?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
So? I watched a movie that I liked quite a
lot at Your Behest Last Breath, I watched Nice. Yeah,
you had had such good things to say about it.
This was the diving movie that Rob had talked about
a few episodes ago. I guess I don't remember exactly,
but Woody Harrelson, Simuliu and what's that other guy's name?
(07:21):
Finn Cole is the other dude's name.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, he was like the main guy.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, they're sort of the three main folks. This story
is bonkers, like you said, very intense, but a pretty
great movie. I really had a good time watching it.
I thought it was, you know, suspenseful, had a lot
of good humor in it, you know, action stuff. They
made some choices I will never understand. And it's based
(07:45):
off of a real life story. I mean going down
there at all obviously, right, just bonkers. But yeah, then
well I don't want to run anything. It's a great
film and really enjoyable, but if you get like claustrophobe,
it might not be for you. Yeah. I don't really
get that, but I was like, this is awful the
(08:07):
whole time.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I don't get that too much. But there was that
one movie that was I think it was called Thirteen Lives.
It was about the Chilean Oh.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
I never saw that one.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, they were in the cave right, yeah, they to
go Yeah, oh my gods, brutal.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
This is kind of in that same ish vein. I mean,
different set for sure, but man, it's just it's wild
what folks do for their jobs, because they they help
repair it's the pipeline, right for for like oil liners
and things, is what they're doing underwater. But yeah, it's
pretty crazy.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Man.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
It was kind of fun seeing SIMUELU play a different
kind of character. Yeah, obviously I haven't seen him in
a lot of things, but it was just he's like
a little bit more of a curmudge. Yeah, just like
kind of hard ed the guy in this which was fun. Yeah,
I really liked it. I thought it was super entertaining.
(09:06):
I had a good time with it. You know, if.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
You'll probably be streaming here pretty.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Soon it but yeah, I assume it'll be streaming at
some point and.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Gotta be soon.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
It was just one of those I saw it after
you had recommended it, and I was like, I do
kind of want to watch that, so I checked it out.
It was fun.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Good, glad you enjoyed it.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
Have you been streaming anything? Yes?
Speaker 2 (09:28):
I thought it would be worth bringing up that I'm
watching the new John Hamm show. Oh yeah, what a
sense he's in this episode. It's called Your Friends and Neighbors. Right,
he's a rich or something exactly. Yep. It's on Apple
TV plus Fun. It's about a very wealthy broker who
loses his job, can't get a job, he's divorced, is
(09:52):
trying to keep up his like super expensive way of life. Sure,
and he starts stealing from his other wealthy friends.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Crazy.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
So it's interesting so far. Olivia Munn and Amanda Pete
are the other recognizable folks in it. Onun Yeah, Olivia
Munn is his kind of new fling, and Amanda Pete
is his ex wife.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Amanda Pete, who we've been in the same room with
before you and I. Yes, congrets to us.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Do you remember where congrats at the ConA? She nailed
it a Manda Pete Bradley Cooper. I don't remember the
musical guests.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
I don't either, which makes me think it was maybe
they didn't even have one.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Yeah, sometimes they'll do a comedian or yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Remember what caught on the way up?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Right?
Speaker 3 (10:39):
That's pretty wild and she's wonderful, love her she is.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
It's all good. But yeah, currently there's only three episodes
out while we're recording this, but it's pretty solid. I'm
into it for now. I'm not one hundred percent sold
on it yet.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
Yeah, I'm going to keep on Jevity that show could
have That's my like main question right.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
Right, it might be a one and done. Yeah, that's cool.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I'm interested in. All those people are really good, so
that's cool.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Yeah, it's it's been entertaining so far, and there was
a big cliffhanger at the end of Love Those we do.
What have you been streaming?
Speaker 3 (11:19):
I finished the series of Daredevil Born Again.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Which oh nice.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
I don't know if we call this the third season
the first works because it's a different most recent, Yeah,
the most recent, the sort of rehashing. It started out
a little weird for me, but I was enjoying it.
They made one really weird choice at the beginning, which
I won't get into that I hated and.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
They hated me too.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
I man, I was fully on board with some Daredevil love.
By the end of this season, I really liked it.
I think it's I think it's really an interesting version
or pathway they're going down for this, like branch of
the MCU, which I think is really fun. I also
boy warning to anyone who doesn't like violence and who
(12:09):
might be thinking, like, oh, it's Disney Plus, I bet
they're gonna Tampa down. They do not.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
You know, there's some really intense fighting scene anything.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
They amped it up, which I was like, I like it,
so I'm not bothered by it. But I was really
surprised that Disney Plus is doing that.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
That's pretty well once they introduce a character that's very violent. Man.
Some of those yeah, just yeah. Lots of noises, so
many noises.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Did you end up Did you end up finishing it?
Are you done with this season?
Speaker 2 (12:40):
I am close not done, so I'll probably end up
talking about it as well.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Yea, yeah, the last episode or last two episodes are
really good. It ends very very strong. I thought, so
it's really fun. It is a little uh, you know,
if you're not if you're having misgivings about the current
political culture in various parts of the world, that might
get a little rough at times. But I thought was
really good. I really liked it. Oh that was fun.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Yeah, yeah, dude, Vincentinafria just crush it so good.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
I'm so glad that they were able to get everyone back,
you know, like that was involved in the old Daredevil.
They got the vibe back because he I feel like
he's going to be too old to play that part soon,
I would imagine.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Yeah, he looks I feel like he looks better now
than he did back then.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
That is true. That is true.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
So maybe he'll always be able.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
To act it. You know. It's just the likes of
you know. Yeah, yeah, anyway, so yeah, Daredevil born Again,

to be a ton of fun, we promise, Come on back,
Come on back, baby. But we are here today to
talk about a great Bostonian film called The Town. The
Town you should have it pulled up ten twenty ten, yes,
(15:42):
fifteen years already for the Town Day. So we're here
to talk about that and it's going to be just
a great time. But we had to get a young
man who who grew up in the mean streets of
wherever he grew up. He's very rough and tumble. I
think we can only agree he's the scourge of the
golf course everywhere that you go. No, it is our
(16:06):
beloved friend. Let's give it up once again for Luke Pierce.
Speaker 2 (16:10):

it's been a minute. How you been.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
I'm doing well, man.
Speaker 5 (16:43):
You know Rob's project is keeping me very busy these days.
I love it. Recording from the upstairs office of my
girlfriend's home that I moved in with. I've got a dog,
probably since last time, beautiful podcast.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Little Arnie, Little Arnie, you might be barking.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Yesterday during a video conference where I was also being recorded,
he puked up grass on a carpet and got a
really good video of me being like, no the carpet, no, no, no,
no no. I didn't get him to the hardwood fast enough.
So hopefully you know, I didn't see him eat too
(17:24):
much grass today, so I think we'll be fine during
this recording. But he's in here, lying down sleeping right
next to me.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Well, he's got to learn. This is why I avoids Elese.
I know that, Yeah, for sure, exactly so, same same deal.
Well that's great, dude. Also, we want to promote for you.
Promoter one oh one is back, right, We're back.
Speaker 5 (17:45):
Yeah, I'm limited edition of Promoter one oh one, a
podcast that a friend, Dan Steinberg, and I started back
in twenty sixteen. We had more than two hundred and
thirty episodes and more than three hundred interviews of people
in the live music business, all sorts of walks of life.
Really great anthology of the live music business. It's kind
(18:06):
of like our love letter to the stories and the
people that built the modern music business. So if you
like it, check it out. We just dropped our first
episode back with some friends from Paladin Artists Agency. Dream
Theater's agent.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Was on it.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
And then I've got another episode coming up with the
head of AEG, which is the company that owns Coachella
and a lot of venues around the country. So I'm
sure he'll have some really interesting things to say when
he comes on the pod. So Promoter one on one
dot net we couldn't get dot com. We don't have that,
we don't have that dot com budget.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
I heard that, Yeah, I heard that.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Luke. I don't think I told you this, but we
had a runner I think it was in Flint, Michigan,
and he was so stoked that I knew you and
he was such a fan of promoter he was geeking out.
It was really fun. That's wonderful to hear.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
And we do get a lot of emails and social
media interactions with people that said, like, oh, listen to
this podcast. Has been so informative to how the music
business actually works, and it's a great tool for people
of all walks of the industry. But I get especially
touched by like people that are kind of coming up
(19:18):
in the business looking for a shot, saying like, hey,
I heard this piece of advice in that podcast from
that so and so, and it helped me do this
sort of thing. So it is a great resource, and
I'm glad to hear that there are fans in Flint, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
Yeah, definitely, it's really great man.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
And talk about I mean, twenty sixteen to now, how
much has the industry changed just in that wind up, that's.
Speaker 5 (19:42):
Pretty wilds That's what was kind of a prompt for
a lot of this is that some of it still
holds up, but a lot of it is like people
in different places now, the business done very differently. So
all these conversations, even though a couple of them are
with people we've already interviewed, it's been seven years or
eight years since we've talked to them, and so so
(20:04):
much has changed and we have so much to talk about.
So we could do these interviews all the time, but
we're just doing them once a month, picking off some
kind of high profile people that we want to have
conversations with.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
So check it out. And that's everywhere your Spotify, all
the places, Spotify, Apple, all the all the places, all
the spots.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Right on men Promoter one on one, check it out,
check it out. That's fun. Man. Well, we're super happy
to have you here today, and I think we should
just get right into us the fifteenth anniversary of the.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Towel, the fifteen years.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Yeah, it's pretty wild. It's pretty wild. That felt not
that old home. No, but rob will you get us
started with just a rough SYNOPSI sure.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
Doug mccrane leads a band of ruthless bank robbers and
has no real attachments except for James, who, despite his
dangerous temper, is like a brother. Everything changes for Doug.
When James briefly takes a hostage bank employee Claire Keysy,
learning that she lives in the gang's neighborhood, Doug seeks
her out to discover what she knows, and he falls
(21:08):
in love. As the romance deepens, he wants out of
his criminal life, but that could threaten Claire.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Nice. Okay, okay, out there, great read. Let's go to
Rotten Toddles and hear what they have to say. Critics
have this coming in at a rock solid.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
That is high pressure ash.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
It's very very nice. Audience members a little bit below that,
but still quite high. They're a eighty five percent, just
a little surprised by it, like I don't know why
they look it less. That seems weird, but you know
people are weird. They make still very high. Yeah, still
very very high. But more importantly than all that is
what we think. So I think we should get into
our hot take.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
Hot take.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
That's a hot take.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
That's a hot take. The getaway carb.
Speaker 3 (22:02):
Is so much okay cool?
Speaker 2 (22:05):
Oh oh please, well, oil, there we go, There we go.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
I love that. I'll go first on this one. I
like this movie a ton. I can remember going and
seeing it in the theater. I don't remember who I
went what. It was, probably rob if I had to guess.
Back in those days, really fun and interesting movie about
a subculture. I obviously don't know a ton about, you know,
(22:34):
the bank robbers, although I will say one of my
fun facts is I was present for a bank robbery
in real life and had to be interviewed by the FBI.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Crazy when I worked in a.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
Bank, it happened. That is the whole story pretty much,
because I didn't know we had been robbed until someone
was talking to the FBI on the phone. That was situation. Yeah, yeah,
it wasn't. It wasn't really that exciting, honestly, except for
(23:07):
the FBI has to come and luckily here in the
Twin Cities we have an FBI office right in town.
But everyone that's present in the bank has to stay
in the bank until they get there. So if you
get caught in like a bank robbery in the middle
of nowhere, screw the rest of your plans. It is
federal law. You have to stay it. Because we had
a bunch of people that were like, I was here
(23:29):
on my lunch break, I gotta go.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
Back to work.
Speaker 3 (23:32):
Bomb That was like the most exciting part quote unquote, yeah,
so I have been around for bank robbery. It was
less cool than these, although no one died, so maybe
more cool than these.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Way more cool. Yeah, I guess depends on did they
ever find who did it? Do you know? Did you
get any backstory on that?
Speaker 3 (23:52):
I think they did, because I think he had done
a couple of places around town.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Okay, but it was.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
The funniest thing was talking to the FBI, because you know,
he had to interview everyone there, and he got to
me and I was like, well, here's the thing. I
didn't know what happened until he was already out of
the bank. I don't know. I only know it's a
heat because you said it was a heat. I have
no clue. And he was just like, thank you so much.
People make up stuff a lot, and I was like,
I don't know anything.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
I'll just do my job.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
So I talked to him for like fourteen seconds total.
It was crazy nice, but that was part of the
bank robbery, at least one that you know of. I
think this movie, though, is super exciting. I think it's
really really fun. I made a slight mistake on this,
well maybe not a mistake. But I watched the extended
version of this.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
Oh wow.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Some of these extended versions are like a minute or
two longer, right this thirty minutes longer.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Wow wow. I did see that in the trivia that
he originally had it like four hours and then had
to cut it.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Oh, that made more sense later. So hopefully I don't
talk about any scenes or anything that we're the original cut.
Forgive me if I do, but.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
I want to see that version.
Speaker 6 (25:05):
Though.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
Yeah, it was great. It didn't feel like super long.
You know, sometimes you're like they come that out.
Speaker 5 (25:10):
He did the commentary on that too.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Is it not on the one idea? But he probably
does somewhere.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
Because his commentary is a really.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
I've heard that.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
Yeah, But but yeah, I really like this movie. I
think it's super fun. It has entered like our sort
of collective zeitgeist in some big ways. I mean, like
the nun masks are such a cliche now, the like
the scene I assume we will talk about in some
of the lines have really become a part of our
(25:40):
regular everyday life and sort of have lived on after
fifteen years, we find out. So I just think that's
super fun. I think it's a pretty nuanced look at
the lives of these people and some fun characters. I
just I really like it a lot. I think it's
really really fun.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
My hot take.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
There is one weird edit where the assistant manager of
the bank when they go see him in the hospital,
and maybe this is one of the thinking.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
That that's extended I've never seen.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Well they cut it out because the they have a
shot of him from the side where he is clearly
talking and his mouth is not moving at all.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Is happening.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
It makes sense now that that was extended.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
So that was Victor Garber, right, yes, yeah, so I
always are just like, why did they get Victor Garber
for like a three second thing just to get hit
in the head with a gun.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Right big time?
Speaker 2 (26:37):
Like he's a pretty recognizable guy. I couldn't believe that
that makes sense that there's stuff on the cutting ring.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Yeah, so thank you for helping me figure out what
I probably should have realized. But you would like the
extended then because you get like a two or three
minute scene with him for sure, Okay, and it's interesting,
but yeah, there's a there's a shot where he's just
not moving his mouth at all. Because of the coverage
they got while he's line, which is pretty great.
Speaker 2 (27:02):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
But yeah, that's my hot take.
Speaker 2 (27:04):
This movie, very hot take. I also thought this movie
was awesome when it came out. It's directed by Ben Affleck.
This was his second film he directed after Gone, Baby Gone,
and then he followed this up with the Best Picture
winner Argo. So it's a great director, really is.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
I think this movie deserves such like a turning piece
in his career, right because he's like, this is a
couple of years after Gone, Baby Gone, but it's not
that far from like jeely, like he was like a
joke in Hollywood. Well maybe not gone after Gone, Baby Gone,
but like, I think a lot of people wrote off
Ben Affleck during this time, and this like really felt
(27:46):
like a when we look back at the history of
Ben Affleck's career, like one of the big turning points,
you know, right before Argo.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Absolutely, It's based off of the Chuck Hogan called Prince
of Thieves, and Ben Affleck helped write the screenplay. I
saw Cool nominated for one Oscar Best Supporting Actor Oscar
for Jeremy Renner, but he would go and lose to
Christian Bale and The Fighter another. But yeah, the cast
(28:18):
and this is awesome. The cinematography and the car chase
scenes are incredible. They are so well shot. We got
some great monologues for all of the main characters, which
you could tell Ben Affleck probably had a hand in
because everybody got to flex a little bit. I thought
(28:39):
it was very well written. Don't have a ton more
to say. My hottest take, my favorite movie ben Afflecks
done as a lead actor. Wow yeah, wow, Okay, hot tatic.
It's not my favorite ben Affleck film because Goodwill Hunting
I still like more, but sure lead actor, best ben Affleck.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Film and the fore I mentioned Chile of course.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
Of course, of course goes without saying.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
I think we all agree. Giglee, Yes, nice hot take, buddy, Thanks,
what do you think?
Speaker 5 (29:12):
Well, you know, this movie just like really wasn't It's
not just like a solid crime thriller crime thriller movie.
I think the history of Ben Affleck is like very
interesting as you mentioned there too, just he's kind of
at this point in his career where Gonboy Be Gone
was a few years out and that was some real promise.
But the town it's like kind of where he plants
(29:33):
his flag and he's like, okay, I can direct movies right,
and so I loved everything about this movie. The action
was tight, Ormance has felt pretty lived in. It's a
really good pacing, you know, very Boston right, like you
can tell draws on on Ben Affleck's deep personal knowledge
of Boston, like every quarter of every bar of every
(29:53):
alleyway to every monument that's pictured, like feels like he's
got a real grasp on that city. And I really
enjoyed that bit about it, and it reminded me a
lot of like heat, you know, and especially how it
stages its action, how this sound design is. I also
watched this in a theater at a cinemak in LA
(30:14):
and it pains me because I, like, I was like
a year or two out of college when this came out,
and so fifteen years ago feels like forever ago in
a sadder manner of how old I'm getting. But you know,
those scenes in the first shootout where they're in the
car and the guns are firing through the windshield, and
like how big that sound was was insane. So I
(30:37):
don't remember the Oscars that year, but it wouldn't surprise
me if like it was some technical you know, sound
design sort of dominations They got there because it just
it felt so big. I love this sound design in
this movie for sure, and it's you know, it's chaotic
in a way, but it has its choreography about it
that I really liked as well too. You're trying to
watch these guys survive Boston and survive all these things.
(31:00):
So yeah, love the movie. My hot take is that
this is a better movie than Argo, which won the
Best Picture. So I enjoyed this film better than Argo,
for sure, even though that was a good movie too.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
It was a good movie, but I'm with you, I
enjoy this one more than that for sure. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (31:19):
It felt you know, tighter and to a degree more
personal for Ben Affleck. So you know, Argo is great,
don't get me wrong, but I like this a lot too.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Okay, too bad?
Speaker 3 (31:33):
Well, very cool. Should we go talk about our favorite
acting performance and name the dude.
Speaker 7 (31:40):
I'm the dude, so that's what you call me, you
know that? Or his dude or duder or you know,
el dud reno. If you're not into the whole brevity to.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Luke, why don't you go first? Who is your dude?
Speaker 2 (31:53):
My dude is Jeremy Rinner, Jim Coffee, You love that.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Yes, terrifying, he's tragic, he's like many times, it's kind
of like spring coiled character ready to like kind of
snap at any moment.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (32:09):
And I feel like we all were also kind of
getting like the peak Jeremy Rinter, you know, he was
kind of on his way up. I think. Yeah, so
we're catching him on the same kind of like career arc.
We're catching Ben Affleck at the same time, which is.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Kind of cool.
Speaker 5 (32:26):
But you know, he plays this really volatile but magnetic,
you know performance on screen. He's the guy that you
like might die for or die because of, you know,
and I really enjoyed his performance. He did a pretty
good Boston accent.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
Yeah, dude, he got to be more fun because you
just you didn't know what he was going to do. Yeah,
where Ben Affleck was perfect as the lead, he just
it just wasn't as fun, it wasn't as flashy. So
I would also give to Jeremy Renner, but with Ben
(33:02):
Affleck very close behind it, because he completely sells this movie.
And he also had to do quite a bit as well,
so kind of almost a tie. I'm gonna be kind
of weak with that, but yeah, really good acting performances
from both.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
Yeah, I think that makes a ton of sense though,
because I'm with you, it's almost like a comedy duo
in a way where like one has to be a
little bit more of the straight man. You can kind
of see how wacky this other person is. Like, we
get that in a different way obviously here. So when
I was watching this, I was like, damn, man, I
think it's Jeremy Renner. And I thought I was, you know,
(33:38):
coming up with this hot take a little bit, and
I was like, well, he was nominated for an Oscar
for it, so right, It's not a very unique pick,
and it is not. As it turns out, this is
a clean sweep. But I agree with everything you guys said.
I think he's really wonderful. Also, this film taps into
something that I find I really like within just stories
(34:01):
in general, is just like someone who's not like lawful good,
but does still have a code about them, you know,
and how they're living. Ben Affleck's character definitely has that,
and I think even Jeremy Renner, he's a little more chaotic,
but he's still like, we take care of our people,
we handle business when we need to handle it, loyal.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
To a fall.
Speaker 5 (34:21):
I think even like the maybe it's like the inverse
of it in John Ham's character, like Prowley, like he's
got this ethics, but he wants to win, you know,
and you can see him kind of push that a
little bit. So I feel like it kind of plays
in a ying ying yang sort of code there.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Love that it's kind of old westerny actually, now that
you say that in that way where you're like, well,
the bad guy is the one who like who should
be wearing the white hat and who you know, that
kind of trope. Yeah, that's a super good call. I
like that. But Jeremy Renner, for all the reasons you
guys said, he's just he's unhinged in this movie. And
like he said, Luke, the sip of soda that he
(34:59):
takes so fun, it's the best choice. I don't know
that's whoever came up with that.
Speaker 5 (35:04):
Yeah, the pop guy for like leaving that out or
whatever it was, you know.
Speaker 3 (35:08):
Right, so so good, just like he's like, well, I'm
just gonna enjoy what I can and screw it, you know.
Like I just think that's such a wonderful little bit there.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
So I wish he would have been like oh diet. Yeah,
it's just something, you know, slice, what are you doing it?
Let's get this away? Nothing left now?
Speaker 3 (35:36):
But yeah, so clean sweep with you know a plus
one there for Ben Affleck, I think.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
Yeah, he was just so good. Well, there were some
really good supporting roles. Why don't we go and pick
the this one?
Speaker 5 (35:52):
Look all right, So I'm gonna be a little weak
here too, and probably kind of throw a tie and
I and I like to come to this podcast and
some obscure performances that are also great for this, and
I think one of these maybe Obscurish. One of them
for sure is Obscurist. I think it probably is going
to make some lists. But the other one, and the
first want to talk about is Pete Posts the Weight
(36:12):
with Ferbie. Yes, dude is mine with yeah, I mean
just like he's got this. He's Shakespearean gravitas that he
brings to everything. He's menacing and cold is you know,
his monologue about Doug's mom is insane, and then just
like down to the end where he you know, the
(36:33):
shootout is crazy. And I know Pete passed away like
probably not long after this film, right like probably a
few years later, and so what a great final one
of his performances still leave us all with right.
Speaker 3 (36:46):
Eleven, so yeah, shortly thereafter, yeah, next year and.
Speaker 5 (36:51):
By this round two is actually George Carroll who plays Gloonesy,
and I just love this character. He's a kind of
the glue guy keeps the whole crew together, you know,
from that first scene whether or not in masks and
driving in the hockey rink to be like you know,
he just delivered so many funny lines like he didn't
bring a mask, or that's how you drive a car,
(37:12):
or just like story line of cocaine off of a
CD during the money laundering kind of monologue. I just
think it's like the sense of humor and then kind
of the way that he goes out where he's kind
of like I'll be good and busts his way through
there and then ends up getting shot out. I really
just like that character, and I think he's a good
bit of humor and like was a loyal due towards
(37:35):
the end and played like a Boston you know row
that held it down to the end. So it's kind
of darkly funny but still human. And I really I
got to get that guy props because I feel like
he probably is not going to get called out for
something else.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Good call, dude, I love that. Yeah, Pete postal Thwaite
was for sure. He crushes every bit of screen time
that he had, which is limited.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
He gets more in the extended as well. Great.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Yeah, he just man, just an old guy with that face.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
I'd love It's perfect though.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
That line always killed me because it was like he
is kind of If I had to pick a runner up,
I'd probably say Rebecca Hall. I thought she did a
good job as Claire Keysy. She seemed genuinely scared when
(38:34):
she had to be a hostage and then was super
mad finding out who Ben Affleck really was. Yeah, and
a good, good love interest.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
I love a good job. I thought John Hamm was
great in this movie. I know we kind of already
mentioned him, but he's just really good. I don't know.
This was the first time I was like, oh, okay,
this guy. I mean I think he done Madmin?
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Right?
Speaker 3 (39:01):
What was his show mad Man?
Speaker 2 (39:02):
Yeah? Mad Men?
Speaker 3 (39:03):
That had been out already, right, I appreciate at this point. Ye,
I never watched that show, so I missed that one.
But she was the one where I was like, oh,
he could do kind of a number of things, because
he's kind of funny in it too, you know at points,
and he's got some charisma to him.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
I was glad he didn't do like the Boston accent.
He does it really hard in one scene, but I
think it's just to like mimic them.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
Yeah, he's almost like making fun of them almost. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
exactly exactly. So love him. Also, I always think of
Blake Lively with this film. I think she does a
great job as a very like a character who could
be a care picture very easily, and she is right
(39:47):
like she fits the stereotypes, but I think she brings
a little something extra to that role that maybe wouldn't
be there if everyone did it. So I always really
like her portrayal in this. I think it's it feels
very possible that that person really exists, which is right.
Speaker 5 (40:04):
He does a great job in that for sure. She
kind of stayed static for me as a character throughout it,
you know, kind of getting used to the end, which
is probably why I didn't throw on there. But she
delivers a great performance. Should knock a writing for for
what she is in the story, right, She does a
great job.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Yeah, so I really like that. Anyone else have any
runners up?
Speaker 2 (40:27):
It was just cool seeing Chris Cooper. I know he
only had one scene. I love Chris Cooper. Yeah, it's
great and he has he has one scene and he
gets a pretty good monologue. Yeah. They just wrote these
scenes so well.
Speaker 5 (40:42):
And it's a pretty good line.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Right.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
It ties back to the end, right and with.
Speaker 2 (40:47):
The yeah exactly. Yeah, but that was all I wrote down.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
Yeah, that Titus well of her guy is pretty good
in this too.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
I like the FBI agent.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
Yeah, I like him. He's fun. I don't what is
he in? He was in a TV show?
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Yeah, he's been boss.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
Oh yeah, yeah, totally do I think what else?
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (41:16):
I like that guy. I think he's he's interesting and
he was pretty fun in this too.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
Yeah. Nice. Well, why don't we go and pick our
favorite scene and let's choose the dingus so is quite simple, really,
dingus dingus.
Speaker 3 (41:30):
I can talk about my dingas all night long. What
do you got for this one?
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Luke?
Speaker 5 (41:35):
Okay, I think this is probably an obvious one, and
I hope it's not, you know, stamping out any other.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
Discussions on other things.
Speaker 5 (41:42):
But the Finnway High scene, you know.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
It's amazing, right, so good.
Speaker 5 (41:48):
Uh, it's hence it's emotional, it's like a war sequence
at times, you know, poetic setting. It's the Cathedral of Boston,
Like how how could you not really love it? And
I had kind of a sort of runner up, which
was the confrontation between Doug and Jim outside the cemetery,
(42:11):
and and they get in their fight and there's one
little bit of like flashback stuff that I don't really
love where he's talking about when he went back and
killed Brennan Lahy and they flashed back to that, and
I don't.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Love that part of it.
Speaker 5 (42:24):
But what I noticed in rewatching it and prep for
the podcast was that's kind of like the last time
they really have a conversation the two of those characters.
And then you know, before the heist, it's like it's
almost like a soft goodbye, right without actually saying anything
to it. So I kind of noticed that on the
rewatch of this one, I was like, you know, remember
(42:45):
the point of lines from Jeremy Renner about waiting forever
and Walpole and and all those things. But what I
did notice is they really don't they don't have another
scene together that's not involved you know, shoot him out
sort of thing at that point. So you know, it's
just heartbreaking as it is. Since here in a lot
of that scene and really enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Nice. Yeah, those were great. I definitely had the Fenway
shootout way up there, I think on this and I
was ready to pick that number one. But I think
that police chase in the Nuns costume, so I think
that is like the most intense part for me, especially
(43:26):
when they all get out to switch cars and they
see the cop looking at them and then he just
turns his head like a thing. Like when I think
of this movie, I think of them in those Nun
outfits in that cop across the street. But just dude,
(43:46):
the car chases in this we're so awesome. I didn't
remember how tight they were.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
I know it makes because I think we did a
draft of favorite car chases recently and I was like, oh,
maybe we should. I can't remember if anyone picked the
town or not.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
Yeah, it's done on the budget. They got it done
on right, Like That's one One thing I also remember
about this film is that I think it was like
only like a fifty or sixty million dollar production budget
for like something crazy at the time where they're making
you know, Batman begins for two hundred million dollars, right, Like,
there's a lot of action that looks big. It's choreographed,
(44:23):
there's explosions and gunshots, and like didn't cost that much, which.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
Is I probably had to close Boston streets for days
and days.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
This actually says. I mean, I don't know how accurate
this number is on IMDb, but it's just thirty seven million.
Speaker 5 (44:39):
I mean, yeah, that's even cheaper than that. That's insane
to think about for an action movie, right.
Speaker 3 (44:44):
Sure, yeah, even just with all the like gun play
and stuff that, you know, just that Yeah, let alone,
that's really interesting. I love that. Uh. I'm okay with
picking anything honestly because I agree with all of you guys.
One thing I wanted to say that Luke in the
Fenway scene, just you talking about the the sound production
(45:07):
design for this, when they put the gun in the
armor car and shoot it, that always stands out to
me because it's just like cuckoo, you know, like it's
so present. I don't know, whatever they did there was
so cool that when you said that, I was like, oh, yeah,
I do think of that every time. Yea that's so great,
so great. I think if I was gonna pick something
(45:30):
besides what you guys picked. Just to say another one,
the line of this movie for me is the we're
going to go somewhere, We're gonna hurt some people. You
can never ask me anything about it, you know that
that whole scene of him just agree, He's just like, yeah,
let's go, let's let's roll out. Then they go to
the folks place, they you know, obviously assault them and
(45:54):
all these things, but we see like the little bit
of friction between them still too, right, because he you know,
goes farther than he needs to go, which he's shown
in a couple other scenes too. I just love that
whole That whole little sequence is really really fun.
Speaker 5 (46:08):
It was really good a lot.
Speaker 3 (46:10):
And there's an alternate ending that makes that scene more
important I learned looking through the trivia.
Speaker 2 (46:18):
So but yeah, it also showed like this guy, you
just don't know what this guy is going to do. Yeah,
he's crazy, right, he's going.
Speaker 5 (46:23):
To his mask off, you know, the whole thing.
Speaker 2 (46:26):
What a crazy guy, crazy dude. Absolutely another I guess
I would add this to the shootout scene, but just
we had already talked about it. Renner's death scene is
just it's the best. Yeah, it's the best. Yeah, that
sip of soda is just perfect.
Speaker 5 (46:42):
And I don't know if you notice, like I noticed
this a lot in musicians, especially like guitarist, the left handedness.
Jeremy Renner is left handed, just like, how weird it
kind of looks on screen because he's caring in the
bag and then he's firing a Tech nine with the
left hand, but even like the rifle side. It just
like something about that. Every time I see in my brain,
I'm like, oh, like, it's kind of a weird way
(47:04):
to be standing and firing, you know, your checker fingers,
your left fingers compared to ninety percent of people being
your right hand, so right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
That's funny because I definitely noticed it, but I am
left handed, so I didn't think it was weird. I'm like, oh, yeah,
that makes sense. I would just be like, oh well,
but yeah, that's great.
Speaker 2 (47:23):
And the only other scene that I wrote down is
just going back and killing Fergie at the flower shop
is just so great, so great, that horrible stuff that
he said to it, just like this is awesome.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
Yeah, I loved that.
Speaker 5 (47:40):
All good scenes.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
Also, that first scene like as like a cold open
kind of scene, really fun. You go right into that
first robbery, all those things we have like OxT you
know that says overrepresented, there's all these crazy people from
this one part of town and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 5 (48:00):
One crazy line for one quote from that. I wish
I wrote that down. I'm like so proud to be here.
This place literally might have killed me, but just so yeah, Charlestown,
right like.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
In the opening quote.
Speaker 5 (48:15):
Yeah, yeah, there's one scene that I literally.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
Ruined my life. Yes, yes, there's one scene.
Speaker 5 (48:24):
That I don't know if in merit's this sort of
you know, presentation on the dingus here, but I really
enjoyed it, which was the it's kind of a transition
scene during an AA meeting where the strings come in
and there's a Boston guy who like very very Boston
stands up and tells his experience, and I think it's
(48:44):
that seems just like beautiful, this guy talking to his wife.
But it's also a really great character development for Ben Affleck,
who's like, you know, they mentioned him not drinking in
a bar scene, but I think that comes after and
so I clearly here's this guy who's really trying to
get away from all all this Boston stuff, the drugs,
that the booze everything here, like going to an AA
meeting and then like just a very authentically you know,
(49:07):
showcasing it in Boston in whatever that the rink was,
which comes back to play again and they tie the
strings in at the end. So I really I really
like that little transition scene too.
Speaker 2 (49:17):
Yeah, that's a great one, good call. But I would
be great choosing the fen we shoot out, especially if
we add Renner's death scene is.
Speaker 3 (49:28):
Yeah, yeah, which I think is fair, right, like all
that is so good, so good. Yeah, I love that chosen.
Speaker 2 (49:38):
Sweet. Well, let's let's talk about some of these quotes,
and let's show me the my name, show me the
my name, show me.
Speaker 3 (49:48):
Luke, you want to go first with quotes?
Speaker 5 (49:51):
Yeah, I think I've got a couple here, I wrote down.
Of course you you already hit it bugs, but I'm
gonna need your help. I can't tell you what it is.
You can never ask me about it. Later, we're going
to hurt some people whose car are we taking? Just
so good love, such a good line.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
It kind of felt like something from Goodwile Hunting too.
Speaker 5 (50:12):
Yes, I love that. That love that that line. I
like the the not around crew line from John hamm
Oh sure, you know.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
I feel like that got uh.
Speaker 5 (50:24):
You know, he had some good monologues and some punchy moments,
and I think that was one that I really enjoyed. Uh.
And then I liked, uh. There was one line from
ferg from the from the Florist where he's talking about
how he's got these plans from the guy that he's
been exploiting for horse betting, and he talks about Robin
(50:48):
the Cathedral Boston, priceless. And I went back into little
research before this MasterCard was running those commercials like Insane
between like six and twenty ten, so I feel like
everyone must have been like, oh my god, like a
wine to deliver. I remember like feeling something like that
when I saw for the first time. I'm like, oh,
(51:08):
that's very very clever right there.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
So yeah, I like that those lines absolutely. Man, those
are great. When Doug goes to the flower shop, he's
remember who clipped your nuts for you? That's great.
Speaker 3 (51:25):
It's such a cool line.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Pulls the trigger. I love that. The slow walk over them,
yeah so good. I love when John Ham's like Coughlin,
throw it on your weapon. That was just a line reading. Really,
(51:48):
I already said that you're an old guy with that face,
so all those glory years are behind you. I love
that so good. Well, and I thought it was kind
of fun. We got a little insight on Coughlin. She's like,
did you say your name was Jim or Jim. He's like, well,
it's kind of both. The teachers used to always say, here,
(52:08):
take this one. He's a gem. It's like a nice one,
kind of fun. Ye, what did you have?
Speaker 3 (52:15):
Bukes a really funny one. I think it was Luke
one of your one of your teaches that said it.
But when he goes they're being interviewed by the FBI
and he's like, I'm trying to make the sound authentic, authenticious.
Speaker 2 (52:32):
Oh yeah, it's like, what did you say? So good?
Speaker 3 (52:38):
I love that so much. That really cracked me up.
Speaker 2 (52:41):
Authentious.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
Yeahs. Also, when they're up in the in the room,
you know, beating up those guys who were yelling at her,
he shoots him in the leg at one point, and
then he goes, oh, there goes college sokka, Which that
was really fun. This guy's unhinged in the best ways.
(53:05):
I love when she was talking to Ben Affleck and
she was like, don't they pay you to fight in hockey?
And she's like he was like, not your own team.
That's pretty great, let's see. Oh and then one John
ham one that I liked was Jesus Henry oxy Guns.
(53:25):
It's like a towny Christmas again. He got to say
some stuff that was like more charismatic than I thought
he was at the time. Uh, what else do I oh?
In the sunny day stuff, I really like that. So
now in really sunny days, I think of someone dying
(53:45):
and I.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
Was just like, damn, damn that is that comes straight
random from the book. Though I don't know Luke he
read the book. He did read the book, and.
Speaker 5 (53:57):
Claire's character is a little bit different in the book,
and I don't remember, like it's a different ending. I'll
just say that, yes, and so it doesn't result in
him getting away. I'll leave it at that. I don't
want to spoil the book because it's a great read.
But the little scene back and forth from the binoculars
(54:18):
to the windows, like that doesn't happen.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
Yeah, okay, gotcha, Okay, but that was fun seeing that
line come back during that. Ye, do you think it's
as good? Do you think the movie is as good
as the book or the book is better than the movie.
Speaker 5 (54:33):
You know, I watched this movie and then went out
and read the book because I loved it in theaters.
Was it a time in life where I was thinking
more about working in film than the music and would
do this all the time, and it really enjoyed the book.
It's like way more into the psychology of Doug McCrae,
(54:53):
slight differences in some of the characters. Claire is like
a little less malleable than what she is, Like I
feel like in this one, Ben Affleck kind of like
bats his eyes and she falls in love. And in
the books it's in fact there's like a little bit
of a relationship with Adam John Hamm's character in the
(55:13):
book and then a very different ending but still like
great vivid jumps off the page to the agu for
all the all the action scenes. So it's it's it's
a great read. I would highly recommend, and I think
it won a bajillion awards in the year that came out,
which is like four oh five.
Speaker 3 (55:30):
Cool.
Speaker 2 (55:32):
Go back and check that out.
Speaker 3 (55:33):
Yeah, for sure, that's cool. Anyone else have any other quotes?
Speaker 2 (55:38):
I feel like I could do so many of the monologues,
but I just didn't really do it justice. But I
really loved the peat postal twite one talking about you know,
he went the chemical way on his mother and gave
her a taste and all that just was so brutal, brutal.
And he ends it with you know, if there's a heaven, son,
(55:58):
she ain't in it.
Speaker 5 (56:00):
Oh God, rough, brutal, and you know, talks about Boston
streets and hang herself on Melanie cast Boulevard. I'm like,
oh god, it's terrible. There was one line and it
reminds me of the Luis k joke about the magic
mic line about saying, I see a lot of breakers,
are you know?
Speaker 2 (56:19):
Around here?
Speaker 5 (56:19):
Because I was doing this all weekend with you and
your boys didn't just roll over a star market over
in Martin for a box a quarters. I've been saying
like box of quarters around the house, Like if you
need a phrase to drop into a Boston accent, I
think box.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
A good one. It's a really good one. Whenever I
think of Goodwill hunting the judge in that has this
is a really small scene but you hit a coop
and how he says, you hit a cop and you
got a copy. That's always the one that sticks. There's another,
you know, sehn hamline.
Speaker 5 (56:55):
He gets to deliver a kind of making fun of
the town's right, so in a box of cardus. I
feel like Karen heard me say that fifteen times this
past weekend.
Speaker 2 (57:06):
Just loved it. That's awesome, that's great. Well, well, yeah,
why don't we move on to bugs? Boohoo moments? Wow,
the crying game. I don't think you cried too much
in this, at least I didn't. The one that I
(57:28):
was thinking of is when Blake Lively comes to Ben
Affleck's hotel room and is kind of begging him to
go with him. It's like, why can't I change Dougie, Yeah,
and begging to go with him. That's uh yeah, I
thought that was great.
Speaker 3 (57:49):
That did not get me to cry.
Speaker 5 (57:50):
I got one that because I teared me up a
little bit, which was at the end where Doug leaves
the letter in the bag of cash and then this
strings pull up and it points to Doris McCrae, his
mom little at the ice n redone and kids are
(58:11):
back in it and all those things that strings and
then the mom and had just you know, obviously killed Fergh.
That scene got me choked up a little bit, so
I thought bugs might nice and I'm going on there, that's.
Speaker 3 (58:22):
A good one. That one definitely got me for sure.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
Nice for sure. Uh did the A one get you?
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (58:29):
Maybe it's just the strings like that though, but it
didn't get me to cry. Yeah, Uh, there's only one
other one. Well maybe I guess too. It's it's the
sunny days thing and then her calling back to that
basically oh at the end, Yeah, I liked I don't know,
(58:52):
I hear what you're saying, rap where you were Like,
it's kind of jumped out of nowhere from me, but
I liked it in this one for some reason. It
was sort of both of them understanding that this was
special but also not meant to be. And I don't know,
that just hit me right that day. So it got
me the first time she tells the story, because it's
(59:13):
just kind of that's her first I feel like that's
the first time we see from him like, oh, you
don't have to be maladjusted, but you can still have
in your life, you know, kind of deal and I
thought that was I thought that was important for him
as a character to hear and also just a cool
moment because he obviously does have a lot of trauma
(59:34):
in his life. You know, like, I don't think that's unfair,
but it doesn't necessarily mean it's one path over another.
And then the call back to it, I thought was
great because she was being really you know, she was
being strong armed into, you know, giving him up and
all that. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, so yeah, those two got me.
(59:58):
It was three total, I guess then, yeah, should we
do a little movie trivia?
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (01:00:06):
Nice. Before the movie was released, Ben Affleck praise Jeremy
Renner's performance, and he jokingly stated that if there was
a bad shot or performance from someone else in the scene,
editing could easily just cut to Renner looking at a
napkin to make the scene work. Was really great and
it makes me wonder if he did he do the
(01:00:26):
soda thing on his own. I don't know, I need
to know about this stupid soda thing. Jeremy Renner, in
preparation for this role, surrounded himself with actual convicted bank
robbers in Charlestown for research, and it helped him nail
the accent according to him, which seems like he really did.
I thought he was great with you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:00:47):
Washed off from all those Cambridge years now, I.
Speaker 3 (01:00:50):
Guess, which is pretty wild because he is not this guy,
as it turns out, just a fine actor. Like we said,
the original cut was four hours long, which is pretty crazy,
but yeah, he cut it down. But there is uh
so there's the theatrical cut, there's the extended cut, and
then there's also an alternate ending that you can find
(01:01:13):
out there.
Speaker 5 (01:01:13):
So I would love to know did you find or
was yours the alternate anyone?
Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
Do you know how mine was not the alternate ending?
I looked it up. The only one I could find
of the alternate ending was in Spanish, so I only
kind of know what happened, but it is very different.
And I read that the alternate ending is the book ending.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Okay, the extended cut, well they're different.
Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
Yeah, I don't know has the same Yeah, the extended
extended right, so but yeah, they're out there. If people
like that stuff, which I think is kind of fun.
It's it's kind of amazing to me just because it
shows how many choices have to go into making a movie, right,
you know, like Yeah, kind of insane, to be honest.
Speaker 5 (01:02:00):
And I mean, without spoiling for the book, he doesn't
get away. You don't know right if he's like it's
sort of implied he's killed, but you're not sure in
the film very clearly writing off of the sunset, which
is just such a huge payoff on this side or
the other, and the tangerine Florida that he mentioned earlier,
(01:02:21):
and so I imagine like filmgoers or movie goers would
love that way more than the kind of it's almost
like soprano like ding of the book where you're not
quite sure if he dies is a quartered by the
FBI basically, and he could be captured or cop but
he's definitely not getting away.
Speaker 3 (01:02:38):
Yeah, that would be a whole different thing. That's crazy.
Chris Cooper's scene was shot at MCI Cedar Junction, which
is a maximum security prison in Massachusetts, and it was
the first time anything was ever filmed there. So I
just thought that was kind of intriguing that they actually
went to a max facility. The paperwork in that must
(01:03:01):
be insane. Owen Burke, who played Desmond Elden, was a
twenty year old Charlestown native who previously had been caught
up in gangs as a youth, and it was his
first acting role ever. When apparently, when he first got
the phone call from Ben Affleck, he was just convinced
it was a prank call. So I just thought that
was pretty wild to have to play you know, these
(01:03:23):
people who he probably knows versions of various times. It
was fun that you mentioned Heat earlier, Luke, because Ben
Affleck cited the Departed Heat, Mystic River, and the Friends
of Eddie Coyle as influences on this film, so he
would agree, I think, which is pretty cool. He thought
(01:03:43):
they were all R rated for films in the same
vein that were sort of the gold standard for what
he was going for, so he picked some good ones auss. Yeah, yeah, right,
for sure. The production encountered a ton of problems with
practical effects apparently, and I guess because of the budget,
(01:04:04):
which we talked about now, most of the scenes that
had the bullet holes and things had to be added
digitally in post production, which is pretty wild. So I
thought that was interesting. I didn't notice it, so yeah
they did. Okay, Let's see, in the movie, the gang
uses a Dodge Minivan during the heist, but in the
(01:04:26):
real No Name gang that the movie is based upon.
They always use Chevrolet Aluminus because they were apparently the
fastest minivans you could get. So all right, Robbie know
what to get for your next whip?
Speaker 5 (01:04:39):
Yeah, yeah, I didn't realize this, but like, you know
why I always talk about stolen cars. It's like you
steal a car so you can go do the other
big crime, right, I didn't realize that fact. It's always
out of community meeting recently and they were talking about
the number of how the number of car theft and
Nashville was like signific getting lower than Memphis, and like
(01:05:01):
how that's a good leading indicator because usually after like
you know, cars are stolen, people then go in the
stolen car and do something way worse. So like it's
a leading indicator for more violent types of crime. So sure,
fun community civic fact on this podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:05:18):
Does that make sense? That's being a smart criminal good
for them?
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
Makes sense?
Speaker 3 (01:05:24):
We have three past and President Marvel alumni that are
part of this. Of course, Ben Affleck was Daredevil in
the great film that everyone loves, and yeah, revered Jeremy
Render of course, but it's Hawkeye. And then Rebecca Hall
was Maya Hanson and Iron Man three, which I had
kind of forgot.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
So that was not my favorite. Yeah, that was not
in Iron Man three.
Speaker 3 (01:05:48):
Yeah, it was no one favorite. I don't think really.
Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
I liked to Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke.
Speaker 5 (01:05:56):
Yeah, musk I.
Speaker 3 (01:05:58):
Want my Yeah, Elon wasn't too. The scene where the
cop turns away, you know, when they see him, right
and then he just turns away and lets him go
about their business. That was based on real life, I guess,
an actual event, and Ben Affleck found out about it
(01:06:18):
when he was interviewing a bank robber in prison, just
a sort of like background for the movie, and then
he added it into the movie. So I thought that
was cool, so great because it's so perfect right, And
I don't blame the cop one bit. I would have
done the same at all. I'm just kidding about my business.
I'm no hero.
Speaker 2 (01:06:35):
Sounds good sandwich? Yeah, no doubt is a box autas
box aquantas Oh.
Speaker 3 (01:06:46):
In the nineteen twenties, well known Chicago mobster Dean O'Banion
ran a flower shop as a front for his bootlegging activities,
and like Fergie, the Ferggie character in the film, he
was eventually gunned down and killed in his flower shop.
The actual event was also recreated in the series Boardwalk Empire,
so they sort of stole as an homage to real
(01:07:07):
life with that Fergie character, which I thought was so
fun because we all agree he was so great.
Speaker 2 (01:07:12):
So it was great.
Speaker 3 (01:07:13):
Yeah, that was all the trivia I had raped. Did
you have anything fun?
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
One? Just The film's premiere was held at Fenway Park
and the cast walked a red carpet along the first baseline,
which I love. That's just fun. And then Ben Affleck
was struggling to find the right actor for the role
of James Coughlin. His younger brother Casey suggested Jeremy Runner,
who he'd worked with on the Assassination of Jesse James
(01:07:38):
by the Coward Robert Ford. Nice, very cool, and apparently
he wanted Mark Wahlberg for Coughlin, but he was shooting
the fighter, huh, so yeah, he could have done it.
Speaker 5 (01:07:52):
I think Wahlberg could have just like, you know, cornered
the market on all things Boston between that and departed
like if he gets forget about it. You know, there
is only one face of Boston Mount Rushmore Films.
Speaker 2 (01:08:06):
It's Mark Wohlberg. Yeah, Yeah, that was all I had though.
Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
Nice Luke, did you have any trivia that we didn't
get to. You're not required to, but if you had an.
Speaker 2 (01:08:16):
I didn't have any trivia.
Speaker 5 (01:08:17):
I was going to talk a little bit about the
book and the different ending for things and just some
of the character differences between those things. I went back
and reread like a couple of chapters, like the whole
thing this past weekend, just to kind of remind myself
of how, you know, how some things were different. But
in the in the book it was kind of you know,
(01:08:38):
like I mentioned, it's definitely more of a psychological profile
into Doug McCrae. Different ending, but the I think the
difference in characters two of them.
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
Frawley was like a little bit more different.
Speaker 5 (01:08:50):
He was definitely out to win. He was definitely a
little bit more and you know, he got a bit
of that with the christ the scene and threatening sky
and everything at the ball are, but he does that
a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
In the book.
Speaker 5 (01:09:02):
He's like, definitely, you know, there's a dark and white
darken light to that guy a little bit more in
the book.
Speaker 1 (01:09:09):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:09:10):
And then yeah, the then Claire's character too, she's like
not as like I said, malleable and she actually that
kind of butters up a little bit almost like applied
romantically to Frawley in the book as well too, So
she's I liked her character way more in the book,
even though Rebecca Hall did a good job with her.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
So cool now nice. Will there be a sequel Judgment Day?
Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
Probably not?
Speaker 5 (01:09:37):
Probably not. It would be interesting, like a prequel about
like the killing of Brendan Lahy. I would like watch that,
like a like a Buddy Buddy ben affleck uh, you
know Jeremy Rider comedy. So you catch Doug McCrae in
his pre sober days and they're nuts running through Boston
killing people. I would I would watch that.
Speaker 3 (01:09:58):
The movie is this virtual prequel as well. Yeah you
know that was a fun one Hockey Days. He's just
beat people up and going.
Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
Like happy gilmouram Yeah. Nice. Well, do you guys want
to play a game? Oh? Yeah, I made a starting
five where I'm gonna name my five favorite actors from
a film. When you know the film, you're going to
ring in with your name. If you get it wrong,
there's no negative points, but you won't be able to
guess again for that movie, and if there are actors'
(01:10:32):
names remaining, you can guess those for a point each.
If somebody gets that wrong, the other person can come
in and steal. But all these films have something in common.
When you know the theme, you can ring in at
any time for a point. We're the you can get
you can guess the theme. But yeah, the biggest thing
(01:10:54):
is once you know the name of the movie. After
I name these actors, just ring in, ring in your name,
all right, here we go. Number one.
Speaker 6 (01:11:04):
The first name is Brendan Gleason. The second name is
Joaquin Phoenix. The third name is Bryce Dallas Howard. The
fourth name Sigourney weaver On.
Speaker 2 (01:11:27):
The fifth and final name is William Hurt five four
three two one. Babe, babe, I could. I also picked
Adrian Brody. I think there's still another big name in
there too. But this was a M Night Shyamalan's The Village.
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
Oh I never saw the Village.
Speaker 2 (01:11:51):
Okay, the Hillage was pretty great. That was kind of
like my last favorite M Night one for like a
y Yeah, got it, and then I started liking some more.
But yeah, anyway, Number two, the first name is Colem FIORI.
You probably don't know him's name, but you you know
(01:12:14):
his face. I know his face and his name, Yeah,
and his name nicely done. Cool. He just showed up
in that Billy Bob Thornton show.
Speaker 3 (01:12:22):
He's man.
Speaker 2 (01:12:23):
Yep. The second name is Andre brower R I p
mm hmm. The third name is Dennis Franz, the fourth
name is Meg Ryan, and the fifth and final name
(01:12:44):
is Nicholas Cage five four three.
Speaker 5 (01:12:50):
I'm having a hard time right now, Luke, keeping Las Vegas.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
It's not not a terrible guest, mugs.
Speaker 3 (01:13:00):
Is it the weather Man?
Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
It's not. You're thinking of the family man.
Speaker 5 (01:13:05):
Maybe The weather Man was also a Nicholas Cage movie,
a very very dark, weird comedy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:12):
Cool. I did not see that. This was a movie
that I was talking about. Was called the City of Angels.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
City of Angels.
Speaker 2 (01:13:21):
Remember city of.
Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
Movies with the names that includes some sort of like city, town.
Speaker 2 (01:13:30):
Village, municipalities. Exactly done. One point for Luke. Did you
guys ever see City of Angels?
Speaker 4 (01:13:40):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:13:41):
But that's the curious Irish.
Speaker 5 (01:13:47):
And I am thinking of the right pory.
Speaker 1 (01:13:49):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:13:49):
He's the guy that plays Russell Brand's dad and get
him to the Greek that London.
Speaker 2 (01:13:55):
I don't remember. Probably I don't know if he's British.
Speaker 5 (01:13:59):
Or well sure something, Okay, yeah, I'm not sure.
Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
His name is Cole. Now, well, there's another guy named
Cole Meani who is like, that's what I'm thinking of. Yeah, yeah,
all right, let's keep going. Number three. The first name
is Regina King. Oh. The second name is John Voight.
(01:14:25):
The third name is Lisa Bonet, The fourth name Will Smith,
and the fifth and final name is R. P. Gene
Hackman Luke Luke wild West. It's not wildld West No
(01:14:51):
for yes, bukes, enemy of the state, enemy of the
the fits point for bugs. Yeah, these have been tough,
has been tough. Let's go number four. The first name
is Lily Tomlin.
Speaker 3 (01:15:09):
I love her.
Speaker 2 (01:15:10):
The second name is John Lithgow. The second name is
Catherine O'Hara, who has showed up in this most recent
