Speaker 1 (00:01):
The sun is shining out the cloud in the sky.
We wouldn't know because we're so happy inside.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Some people a boat on some skis, but we.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Would rather sit on down and talk some movies. We're

evid indoorsmen at home, are on the go. We're the
avidendors Man. We hope you love it, so come on
in and stay. We'll do our best to make use
(00:35):
my the indoors man.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
What is happening? I'm Roblin Christ and I'm certainly are
the evidendors helloever on, how are you, buddy?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Do a great pal, just living the life out here.
It's a beautiful fall there. How are you?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I'm good man. We're still rocking out the Into the
Deep tour. Yeah, I was just telling you a little
bit about it. But we were in Lexington last night.
It was so much fun. I hadn't been in Lexington
in a long time. Such a cool little city.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, I really want to hang out there someday. I've
been through, but never like really chilled for a minute,
you know.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah, it's a cool vibe for sure. And you know
they went and picked up Bourbon for the for the Englishman.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Of course, of course, yes, but yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
We've just been having so much fun. Last night it
felt like a big slumber party. We all we all
got on the bus right now, it's it's home free
and the longest John's are like the musicians are on
one bus and the crew front.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
That's cute.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
And so last night we Chance had bought Naked Gun,
and so we all watched Naked Gun.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
The perfect like, yeah movie to watch, setting right.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Just laughing, so much laughing.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Oh that's great.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
So but yeah, right now we're in Biloxi and the
other boys are doing kind of an excursion fun and
it worked out that we had planned this because it
would have cost a lot more for me and to
go just to like get another vehicle. Sure, but they're
going to show U the longest Jones around, like Chances
(02:22):
neighborhood he grew up, and they're going to try and
find him a gator to look at.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
And it should be fun. That's great. They're going to
have a great time doing that. Yeah, yeah, sorry you
couldn't be there with them, but so happy you're here
with us.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Me too, I'm happy. I'm happy to talk about this movie.
I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Hell yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
But before we do that, I was wondering, what was
the last movie you watched?
Speaker 2 (02:43):
What a lovely question for you to ask. I went
to the theater and I saw The Long Walk. I
don't know if I told you I was doing that.
I can't remember.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
You didn't tell me that about it. I've seen one
ad for it, and that's it.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah. This is a it's from a Stephen King book,
I believe, and it just came out pretty recently, and
it's all about it's sort of like not post apocalyptic,
but close. Like you can obviously tell it's during you know,
the United States, like our history and the near future.
(03:20):
But there's this weird thing that's happening, a televised basically
similar ish situation to the Hunger Games in that they
have this long walk. It takes two people, one person,
two people, doesn't matter. They take a number of people
from every state and then do this long walk and
(03:42):
basically they walk until there's only one of them left,
and if you stop walking, you are like shop.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
This kind of sounds like Squid Games, but it's more intense.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
It's similar. It's like Hunger Games slash Squid Game. Slash,
you know, a speed walking competition. But it was way
more compelling than it had any right to be as
far as I'm concerned, because it's mostly just these and
they're all young men and they're all walking, like and
then that's the entirety of the movie. And of course,
(04:13):
like social dynamics come and like they're talking about stuff
and whatnot. But literally it's just them walking for the
whole thing. It's super intriguing. I really liked it a lot,
and I recommend people see it. It's nice. It does
get like gory and stuff, so if that's not your
vibe then, you know, and violent, so if that's not
your thing, don't check it out. But otherwise, if you're
(04:36):
okay with some of that, it's a super interesting movie that,
like I said, just is better than it should be.
Like the what is it? The sum is more than
the parts, you know, added together or whatever. But yeah,
I really liked it. I thought it was really cool.
There's one dude in it, David Johnson. I don't know
(04:57):
if it's Johnson or Johnson, but it's not like Johnson.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
Okay, I spelt that way doing his soft Jay Just
love it.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Uh also a very young Cooper Hoffman is in this
and he's great.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Did you know the trivia about him? I just learned
this about his Tell me that is Philip Seymour Hoffman's kid.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Oh, yes, I did know that. Then, Yes, I did
not know that.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah, I learned about it while he was doing press
for that movie. And there he was on the Today Show.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Was he the Licorice Pizza Kid?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
He was Licorice Pizza Saturday Night movie?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
No, I didn't know that. Okay, Ah, he's great, he
really really is great. And the other co lead is
this David Johnson who I previously mentioned. Uh, he was
in oh what was it the Alien movie? I think
it doesn't matter. Oh yeah, he was in that and
(05:57):
he was really good in that. But he was really
good in this and just a bunch of This is
gonna be one of those movies because it's so many
like actors of like a certain age. You know that
we're gonna watch it later like, oh my god, that
guy was you know. I think it seems like ripe
for that sort of thing. But I really liked this
(06:18):
movie a ton and I recommend it. So check out
The Long Walk.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
The Long Walk Cool.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
I liked it how about you? What have you seen recently?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Before I left the famine? I watched the new Bad
Guys movie called Bad Guys Too.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
And I haven't seen the first one, but they look fun.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Those they are super fun. You would like them both cool.
We all enjoyed it. There's a lot of humor in it,
and they let the adults have fun with it too.
It kind of has that kind of like Shrek vibe
where yeah, of course there's jokes for both of us.
Sam Rockwell is so good as the main guy. He's
the he's the wolf. And then the rest of his
(06:57):
team is a bunch of fun with Mark Marin and
Craig rob and sen An Aquafina and Anthony Ramos.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
That's a great crew man awesome, and then all.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
The supporting people are big names too that you'd recognize totally.
But yeah, the animation is really fun. I believe this
is a DreamWorks vehicle sure, and the plotline was kind
of similar to the first one but still very very entertaining,
And so yeah, I would I would recommend both of them.
(07:27):
I'd check them both out, give yourself a little double feature.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
I definitely like every time I've seen an ad I've
been like, yeah, I'm gonna watch that at some point,
and it's gonna be cute. I'm gonna like it.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, yeah, nice. And apparently it's a whole book series too.
And I don't think my kids were super into the
book series really. They really like the movies so fun.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
We'll check that out for sure.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
What have you been streaming?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
I streamed a comedy special on HBO rob It just
came out. I thought it was one of those you've
talked about this before, but that weird phenomenon where you're like, oh,
I watched this thing, and then I realized it came
out that day, you know, so like I watched it immediately.
Apparently Caleb Herron is the guy's name. It's called Model Comedian.
(08:12):
He's really funny. I don't really know him from anything
other than he's been on a few podcasts I've listened
to in the past just as a guest.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Oh yes, I've seen clips of him on the podcast
for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah, And I don't know what he's a writer or
what else he does, but he's really funny. And I
really enjoyed this stand up special top. I thought it
was really fun. He gets into a lot of just
like him. He's only thirty, which I thought he was
older and that made me mad, and then no, not really,
but he's just great. He's got such a fun vibe
(08:48):
about him. I will say he is a gaman and
does throw out some like gay slurs as part of
his jokes, and they're emphatic. So if that's not your thing,
or maybe don't watch around, you know, or whatever. But
he's really funny. Man. I really like that special lot.
I thought was really good.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
That's funn Yeah. I saw one bit about how he
never expected a straight white male before, and this guy
said something, yeah what was he Oh yeah, he said
it's not super appropriate, but he pretty much was like, yeah,
there's no way that a woman would ever be able
(09:29):
to pleasure me orally. They just they just can't happen.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, and he's like, this guy's a genius. Now everyone
thinks it's a challenge and he goes, yeah, so funny. Yeah,
it's really funny. But yeah, he's got a fun sense
of humor. And I think you would like it rap.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Yeah, I think I would too. He cracks me up
every time I see him.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, it's really great. So HBO Max And like I said,
I watched it like the day it came out, which
is just silly. I didn't do it on purpose.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
But here we are, so big Caleb hearing.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Fan, I guess, except I don't know what he does.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
He's a comedian as.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
A writer too, because I think he was on that
Ian Carmel podcast, the All Fantasy Everything That Does. He's
has written for a bunch of the late shows and stuff, gotcha,
So I think that would be the connection. But anyway,
he's really funny and the special is really great. So
great act out what have you been?
Speaker 3 (10:24):
The story something much darker than that. I just started
the most recent project from Jason Bateman called Black Rabbit
on Netflix.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah, I haven't seen this yet. Tell me everything.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Well, I don't know a lot to tell you because
I only watched the first episode or so far. So
far okay, but I mean it's long. It's like an
hour and ten minutes or something in the first episode,
so and it took me a minute to get locked in,
but by the end of the hour I was into it.
(11:00):
Jason Bateman plays a real douche of a character. He
reminds me a lot of the Ed Norton role in
rounders where he's like big sleeves bag. Yeah that only
cares about himself, always makes the wrong decision, treats the
people around him poorly.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yeah. Yeah, Okay, so that's.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Been interesting seeing him in this different kind of role
because I've never really seen him.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Usually he's kind of the charming I mean, he can
be in things, but yeah, but not like this. Yeah.
Usually it's redeemable a bit at least, right.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
And even if it's not, he's usually just like super
mean and that's his character. But this is like it's much.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
More than that.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Interesting.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yeah, and Jude Law plays his older brother. He seems
like he's more on the up and up. But I
think we're gonna find like you just kind of feel
like maybe there's something under the surface there.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Yeah, so, uh, they leave it open whether he's a
good guy or not, but it's it's gonna be dark
for sure.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
It didn't hook me as fast as Ozark did, but
I'm definitely gonna keep on watching.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah. Well O's Ark was just like right away and saying, yeah,
that's fun. I know nice, We'll have to check that out.
That's very cool, very cool. Well, what do you think
should we do a few plugs.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Yeah, all right.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Guess convis us. It's always over on Twitter machine where
we're at Avid Indorsman with a Z. You can also
go to Facebook dot com slash the Avdendorsment. We are
at the Avid Endorsement as well on Instagram, TikTok, Blue
Sky Threats. We're all over the place. But the spot
to really go and hang out.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Patreon dot com slash the Avid Indoorsman.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
Oh, I like that. That made me feel silly things.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Yeah, I like it. It's a great time on Patreon.
We love our patrons. We give him lots of perks,
and one of those is uh saying Hi. Saying hi
to these specific people Marsha Griziak, Mary Fox, Nanette Walkley,
Johan Brostad, deb Olk and Noel Flores Hi, you guys him.
(13:11):
Another part that we like to give our patrons is
an extended version of every single episode that we put out.
We call it our podcast and chill versions. Chill and
it is chilling. And we're usually going to do a
top five draft that pertains to the movie we're talking about,
and Bugs came up with this one. We're gonna do
our top five favorite, Sir Ridley Scott Films.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yes, sir, I didn't even know that.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yes, sense make sense?
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that'll be a blast. We also did
it because we only have the two of us today,
so that's kind of the only way I could have
done it.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
I could have done three, could.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Could do three. Missed some interesting ones that I've missed
some too, don't make a lot of sense. We'll get
to that. All of that. We spaker on dot com
slashly have an endorsement if you want to hang out
and check that out. But we are here today first
to talk about a lovely little film called The Martian
rob The Martian. It came out in twenty fifteen, so
(14:14):
this is ten years old already, which is pretty wild
to think about.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
I know we had talked about doing it for its
five but I'm glad we're hitting it on its tent.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
Me too. We got there eventually. But yeah, like I said,
it's just you and I, So you want to get
us started with a rough synopsis.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
I would love to, Okay, when astronauts blast off from
the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Wantney, presumed dead
after a fierce storm, with only a meager amount of supplies.
The stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to
find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile,
back on Earth, members of NASA and It's NASA. Members
(14:53):
of NASA and a team of international scientists worked tirelessly
to bring him home, while his crewmates hatch their plan
for a daring rescue mission.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Nicely done, nicely done.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
It's being silly with my voices.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I mean, breed, not sure I would have even noticed
NASA until you said it. That's how dumb I I.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
Was like, Oh, I said that, weird. I like NASA.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
That's a real roller coaster ride that read. I loved it.
I love thank you very talented. Wow, let's go to
Rotten to models and hear what they have to say. Uh, critics,
this is a this is kind of rare for us.
Of the critics and the audience score is exactly the same.
They're both at ninety one percent, which is very fresh.
(15:36):
My friends, that is fresh. Yeah. I kind of would
have thought audience members would have had it up a
little bit, but.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
I see yeah, I could see that too.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
But still, dude, that's really.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
Also critically like, really well received. It's pretty fun.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Very well received for sure. Yeah, but what he says,
should we go in and say what we think is
the time for our hot take?
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Hot take?
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Oh, ash, that's a hot take. Hmm, that's a hot take.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Mars is cold, it's cold.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Yeah, there's a there's a fire. He has an explosion.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
He has explosion.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
That's a thing.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
Ah, I'm making water and I hurt myself.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Yeah, because I'm an idiot or whatever, because I'm stupid. Right, Yeah,
I have it somewhere wonderfully done. I can go first
on this one. I really like this movie a lot,
like more than I probably should even I don't know.
This is one that I rewatch a lot.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
It is just a how many times you think you've
seen it?
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Now? Man? I bet just Ballpark twenty five? Wow, it's
a lot. I don't know why I like this one
is always an easy one that I know I'll be
super entertained. I've seen it a bunch now, so I
don't have to, like one hundred percent pay attention. But
then you know, we'll you know, set down my whatever
(16:57):
I'm working on, you know, or whatever, and really in
for certain parts of it. I just think it's really
well done. It is a it's fun that we're doing
this right after Apollo thirteen because it is similar in
a lot of ways, right, Like it's a it's a
movie about being marooned. It's a movie about the harshness
of space. You know. In general, it's just really really
(17:18):
fun and overcoming like insurmountable odds. I think we've talked
about before and you'll probably talk about this, but it's
Andy Weir, right is the author's name.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Definitely.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
We love his books in general, and this one is
also a great one. So if you're looking for a
great read, check out The Martians Super Did you.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Read it before the before seeing it?
Speaker 2 (17:39):
I read it after for sure, and it's fun. It's
it's I think there's trivia about this later, but I
can just throw it in now. It's written as like
his like diary entries that he's doing, you know, that's
how the story gets told. And apparently he did that
as a blog first and then just like made it
into a book and now all this So I think
(18:00):
that's just really cool. What a fun way to do things.
Fun soundtrack in this movie, Uh, well, if you like disco,
it's a very which I do. I really enjoy it.
I like it a lot, and the score is quite beautiful.
I thought, uh, you know, empty in spots, like sort
of that lonely feeling vibes going on, but also just
(18:23):
just really nice, very vibey. I thought, uh, I like
the the like video logs are a great way to
give us like that exposition and you know, move the
story along. I think that's really fun. And the strangely,
the relationships in this movie are part of my favorite parts.
I just think the crew has such a cool relationship,
(18:46):
and then like the people working back on Earth have
fun dynamics and stuff. But I just think it's great.
I really love this movie a ton hot take hot
take really come up with the hot take for this one.
I could live off potatoes all I think I could do.
I think I'd be okay. I wouldn't live long.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
But I'd have to be dipping it into viking in too.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Just to run out of ketchup would be hard, for sure.
I love a potato though. I love it.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Yeah, you don't.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Eat many potatoes anymore, do you.
Speaker 3 (19:22):
You know? I tried doing the whole low carb thing,
and potatoes aren't good for that.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
There's so good.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
They are so good and I love them in all
their all of its forms too. But just like straight
up baked potato, that was one thing that I didn't
I didn't miss.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
That a lot, get that, you know what I mean.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
But like my family and Kelsey's family, they have a
baked potato with every single dinner. It doesn't matter what
the dinner is.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Tonight, we're having Italian and baked potatoes and a baked potato.
Yeah yeah, we did eat a lot of baked potatoes
grown up. Oh yeah, yeah, but yeah, I guess that's
my hottest thing.
Speaker 3 (20:02):
That's a fun tick. That's a fun tick. I like it.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
That's all I got.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
You're good man. I really enjoyed this movie. I remember
devouring the book by Andy Weir and it was fun.
I always remember it because it was while Holme Free
did a little retreat. It's the only time we ever
did this. We got an airbnb out in Utah in
the mountains and learned all the music after our Country
(20:26):
Revolution album we put out, and whenever we weren't rehearsing,
I was just into this book, like, just couldn't put
it down.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
So was that before the movie? Did you catch it before?
Speaker 3 (20:39):
And then I found out it was going to going
to be a movie. I was so excited. And this
is one of the rare times where I felt like
the movie was as good as the book. I agree completely,
and that does not happen often.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
You know.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
That's like only a handful of times where I could
ever really say that they got the right tone. Matt
Damon was perfectly cast, and uh yeah, I was just
so happy after I saw it. A lot of a
lot of people felt the way I did. Because this
was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Yeah that's wild.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
It didn't win any okay, good, but the big ones
it was up for was Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, and
Best Picture. But yeah, that and Brooklyn that year were
the only movies that had been nominated that didn't didn't win.
But yeah, Ridley Scott directed it, did a great job.
(21:39):
Drew Goddard did the screenplay. We really liked Drew Goddard.
He did Cabin in the Woods, Cliverfield. He did a
really fun one that a lot not a lot of
people saw, called Bad Times at the l Royal.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
I've been like I wanted to see that for a while. Okay,
that one, if you.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Can find it, somewhere that one was really fund out.
But I also saw that Drew Goddard, he wrote the
screenplay for the upcoming Andy Weir film, How did you
tell you that?
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Oh that's good's appealing?
Speaker 3 (22:14):
That same kind of vibe I would, I would imagine, I'm.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
So excited for that. Please don't watch the Please don't
watch the trailer, guests, don't.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Watch the trailers. I hate that.
Speaker 2 (22:24):
And that book is so good, it was so good,
so good.
Speaker 3 (22:28):
But this movie, the cast is just incredibly stacked. It's
amazing that all of these people were down to play
all of these pretty small rule.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
I could see how some people might feel like the
run time is a little too long, But since I
loved the source material, I was always very engaged. Yep,
So that didn't bug me. But two hours and twenty minutes,
if you're not absolutely loving it, I could see that
being a little too long.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Yeah, I really enjoyed this movie. I have been enjoyed.
I've enjoyed it as much on the following rewatches. It's
just a very rewatchable movie.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
How many times have you seen it?
Speaker 3 (23:08):
I've probably seen it four times.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
That's a lot for you, though, because you're not as big.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
About Honestly, aside from kids movies, this is probably the
movie that I've seen the most in the last decade.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Totally. That's awesome though. Cool.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
Yeah, my hot take, and I don't really like it.
I was kind of nitpicking a bit.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
But you're like redhead Stump belong in space? Is that
your hot take belong in space?
Speaker 1 (23:41):
No?
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Hey, you are saying these things. Mine's meaner, Mine's a bummer.
I love Kristen Wig, but I felt like I didn't
really believe her in this role. She kind of takes
me out of it little every time she's not like
I just I don't know, because I know just how
funny and just like yeah, dynamic she is when she's
(24:04):
playing somebody like one hund like truth for I felt
like I was seeing her act bummed me out a
little bit because I love her so much.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Yeah, do you think that that's more to do with
us than her ability at that point? Maybe? Maybe for
some degree, because I like there's even like.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
When when he's like coming back in and they show
her and she's like kind of supposed to be like
crying and she's clearly not crying, So then it's like
why are we why are we doing that?
Speaker 2 (24:36):
But interesting, that's that's about all I could nip it.
I will say that part because she's playing it is
so much more noticeable than it probably needs to be,
you know what I mean? Like I because I always
find myself saying like, does she do more? She really doesn't.
She doesn't do like that's all. Okay, sounds good. Yeah,
I hear you. Yeah, interesting, hot take pal hot.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
Yeah, not my favorite.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Let's just we won't. I love her so many Yes,
I get it, she's so great and everything else that Yeah,
you know, but he hot take hot take. Let's go
name our favorite acting performance show.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
We name the Dude.
Speaker 4 (25:20):
I'm the dude, So that's what you call me, you
know that? Or his duds or duder or you know,
eldudo reno if you're not into the whole brevity thing.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
One person that, yeah, one person that I don't think
was like it was just me watching them act was
Matt Damon as Mark watney Man. He just completely like
from reading the book, he was just perfectly cast. It's
hard to imagine somebody better suited for that role than him.
(25:57):
I just loved his character. I loved his set up there.
He immediately got to work. He didn't wallow in self pity.
He just got to think in what he could do
to keep himself alive. He kept it upbeat, He was
funny in it. You know, break your heart a few
times when when there would be setbacks, but then he
just immediately you know, start solving more problems and in
(26:20):
a very very successful career. This is one of my
favorite roles of his.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
I love it. I love it. Yeah, that's a hot take.
Speaker 3 (26:27):
Yeah, at I didn't say my favorite, no, no, but one.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, even on the Rushmore or whatever, it is pretty yeah,
pretty compelling. I totally agree. I also picked him. I
think he's just wonderful in this role. Like you said,
infusing so much lightheartedness and comedy into this is it
was there in the source material, so I get that.
But also he brought that out in a very believable way,
(26:54):
which I think is great. I think I said it
on the last podcast too. So maybe I'm going through
some things where this is often of mine, but I
think being able to have that humor during the hard
times is like a really it's a big part of humanity,
I think, you know, and just the part of our superpower,
and I think he shows that a ton in this
(27:16):
I'm with You. He's so capable and smart that it's
really fun to watch. And also things still go wrong,
which is very compelling, you know, And just his relationships
he has, like him and Michael Pania together are just love.
Even though they're never really together in this movie, which
is weird, they just have such a fun reparte. I
(27:40):
really like it a lot. But yeah, I thought he
was awesome in this. He struck like the perfect balance
of like not being helpless, but also you could tell
at times he was like, I mean, I'm for sure
gonna die up here, like you know, but I'm not
not right now, you know, Like yeah, and like the
just the scenes and there's that one scene where they
(28:01):
talk about it's like every every day I just go
out and look just because I can. Then I was like,
I felt like you felt that from him in a
big way. So yeah, I just I'm one hundred percent
with you. He's the dude for sure.
Speaker 3 (28:14):
For surely the two she's going to take a while,
so we might as well get into that. Yeah, let's
pick a why don't you start off with this? This
was tough, well, this is awkward. She's the best part
of the film. It's Kristen Wigg.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
I don't know. I'm just kidding. I didn't pick her.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
I totally get what you're saying. Yeah, I think, man,
it's a real tie for me. But I'll just say
Jessica ches Stang because I think she's wonderful in this movie.
I love her in pretty much everything. I think I
do too. I think she's really like in my own brain.
I'm not saying others, but I think I she's in
(28:57):
so many things that I love that I almost like forget,
like I undervalue or something almost. But I think she's
really great in this also toes the line between she's
the commander and has to make some really hard choices,
including leaving him, even though that's the right call based
on the info that she has, but then also, you know,
(29:18):
just being a fully fledged human person and you know
character that's rounded out. I just think she's really really
great in this, So you'll take her, and I know
we'll talk about many more.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Who would you use so many more? It was just
the person who I thought stole the movie. While it's
clearly Matt Damon's movie, Yeah, this guy has two scenes
and completely crushes it. And it's Donald Glover is Rich Pernell.
He's so good and it isn't he He kind of
steals the movie for it.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
Yeah, I'm with you.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
But I love that. He's just this brilliant mind. He
doesn't really understand the politics and how to speak with
people in charge. He you know, he's just like I
figured something out, I'm going to tell you this, and
he was able to dumb it down for them enough
and like actually had to have stand across the room.
Yes exactly, Yeah, but he just get straight to the point.
(30:12):
I really enjoyed him in this a lot.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Love that. That's a great pick. He was on my
list for sure.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
My runner up would have been Michae opinion pretty much
just because their chemistry between, you know, just kind of
giving each other and you know, when he's super stressed out,
he can still just throw like a sarcastic email to him.
You know, it's there's this underlying sense of knowing that
(30:42):
he loves him very much too, you know, just like, yeah,
it was a really fun role. I enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
He's just a botanist, you know whatever. Just really fun,
very like true friend stuff.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
I feel like, right, totally, totally.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
I had him as a runner up for sure. We
love him. I think everyone knows that. How about Jeff Daniels,
That dude was great in this movie. He was perfect,
very serious role for him, but man, he's wonderful in it.
Speaker 3 (31:13):
It felt like Jeff Daniels newsroom, newsroom.
Speaker 2 (31:16):
Agree, agree, he's really great. I love Chewatil Edgi four.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
Of course he's he's.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
So good in this and he has a pretty big
part that I you know, watching it now, honestly trying
to think about things, you know, more than usual, I
was like, oh, he's like a like almost a I
don't know, a second or third probably like I.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
Feel I feel like he was probably second most on screen,
I bet, which.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Is pretty wild. I love him. And then Mackenzie Davis
I really love. She doesn't get to do a ton
in this movie, but everything she does I really like
and I like her. I don't know, that character is
just fun. I like how she interacts with everybody else,
and you know, yeah, she was great.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Benedict Wong has some really fun scenes.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
He's so fun when he's just like, all right, we'll
do it in three weeks less time this.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
He just looks exhausted constantly.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
He's so good in this. That's a great for sure.
Speaker 3 (32:12):
I really really liked him in this. And then some
kind of like they were great but kind of forgettable. Sure,
Sebastians stand and Kate Mara like they're both in it
and they're both wonderful actors. But it just goes to
show you how nuts this cast is. You can just
have those people kind of like it, like.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
In the background they.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
Were kind of just hang out in the back. Yeah,
it's bizarre.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
No, I thought the same thing because I was like,
I love both of them, but also you know, like, yeah,
they're fine and it's cool, but.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Yeah, I don't know. They didn't have a ton to do,
and it's amazing that they did it.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
What about scene being Buddy, I mean, he's in it
for a hot minute.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
And he's great. He's wonderful in it, and I love
Have you seen them where it's like it's either seen
Bean or Sean Bond. You can't have it both ways.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
Yeah, that is great. We have to pick.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
I saw that and I immediately sent it.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
To Yeah, did she make it?
Speaker 3 (33:16):
Seriously?
Speaker 2 (33:19):
I love that. That's really great.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
You know, but that was really fun having him in there.
And spoiler alert, he doesn't like die immediately amazing everything
he's in, he's just like gone early.
Speaker 2 (33:33):
And maybe the reason I love this movie so much.
There's just some some lovely Lord of the Rings comments
that I know.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
I was like, I bet, I know what your favorite
scene is going to be.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Maybebe that's pretty good. And then the last one that
I wrote down, I didn't think he was particularly like
amazing in this, but this must have been the first
time I ever saw him, that Nick Mohammad Nate from
teb Las And I always think that's crazy because I'm
sure we saw him not too terribly long after this,
But yeah, he came in such a different character too, obviously.
(34:09):
But yeah, did you have anyone else that you feel
people know?
Speaker 3 (34:14):
And I mean there's there's still more people, but yeah,
this cast is just insane.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
It's a stack and pack my friend. Yeah, well, let's
talk scenes. Let's talk about our favorite scene. Shall we
name the dingas?
Speaker 3 (34:27):
The Dingus Sods? Is quite simple, really, Dingus Ingus.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
I can talk about my dingas all night long. Why
don't you go first on this one? Pat?
Speaker 3 (34:38):
Oh gosh, oh boys, this was really really hard. Yeah,
there's a lot of me do you do you have
a clear number one? Because if you have a clear
number one, you can go because otherwise I'll just kind
of say. Some scenes.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
I really like. I do really like their Rich Parnell
maneuver scene.
Speaker 3 (34:56):
When he's just that is honestly what I yeah, when.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
He's talking like so it starts with this is just
funny because it's like, well, it starts with the Lord
of the Rings comments, which I do love. We get
to talk to Rondel and all those things, right, super fun,
super nerdy, great stuff. But then him like explaining it
them having to you know, figure out like, oh crap,
we only get one shot at this. There's like the
(35:21):
power struggle that happens in there. I just think it's
really really fun that part. I really like it a lot.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
So that is also what I put down for my
number one. That's pretty great.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
That is great.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
I think my favorite shot of the movie, and it's
just because of the acting, is when Matt Damon is
Gamon is trying not to audibly cry into a suit
when he hears everyone's voices before it's to meet them.
So great, so powerful man I'm gonna give you.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
One for free. That's a boohoo for me for sure.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
That is he was doing such an amazing.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Job in that agreed. Yeah, still trying.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
To play it off cool, but he's crying.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
To be able to do that in probably just a
room by yourself with a bunch of people working on
the film. Like that's acting as wild. There's some magicy there.
I love it. Yeah, that's so cool. Yeah, I love that.
That's a great call. How about just that beginning scene,
like going from them being just like astronauts and scientists,
(36:34):
the storm comes up, which is nuts, all the things happen,
and then to him doing surgery on himself. That's a
hell of a first you know, first part of the movie.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
It's really good for sure. And that stitching himself up
scene was really incredible. I felt myself kind of like
not breathing regularly.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Me too.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
I was almost holding my breath the way that he
was able to do that, and they really kind of
draw it out, You're like really engaged the time is
he going to like he's going to use a staple
on his skin like that? And just like, yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
See how smart he is because he like looks to
see if they line up, to know if he got
all of it, you know, all the things right.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
It's just like a wow, piece of shrapnel that's in
it and wild.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (37:22):
Yeah, it was intense. Man.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
I just love that.
Speaker 3 (37:24):
And then his reaction once he's done and just like
just like he's like almost crying. Yeah, dude, that was
That was really cool. I also had to put that down.
The other thing I wrote down was just I can't
pinpoint one scene, but just watching him problem solve on
(37:45):
Mars was just so entertaining. It was great, And I
mean that happens like twelve times.
Speaker 2 (37:52):
I know it's hard to pick a specific one. Maybe
the one for me was when he makes it to
Pathminder and like gets back and makes contact. That's the
first moment probably for him to write the character. But
like we're like, oh there's a chance, you know, almost
like oh, there's a tiny speck of hope here and
(38:13):
that's cool. I don't know, I just really like that part.
I also love the there's a couple like montage scenes
where like show stuff happening. The one that I like
a lot is the scene leading up to and then
showing him following through of how much they have to
jettison from the ship so that he can get up
(38:33):
and meet the folks, you know, right, It's like I
love what he's just like, he hasn't even got to
the bad stuff yet, and he's like, well, let's go
ahead and get to the bad stuff, you know, like
all that stuff. But then him just like having to
really get down down and dirty and get to work
and like unscrew all the things, and you know, this
five hundred kilogram thing he has to move it somehow,
(38:56):
and you know, all these things. So I just thought
that scene was really fun and showed like again all
the brain power that was with him, you know, and
his own and all that stuff.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Uh what other runners up did you have? Do you
have any other ones? I mean.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
The ones on Mars. If I had to pick one
of those, I'd probably say when he has the setback
making water, Yeah, that tells himself up. Yeah that is
that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Yea.
Speaker 3 (39:31):
And you see him just with like the burnt hair,
and yeah, it's that's really fun.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
It's pretty great. I also like when he goes and
gets the nuclear like stuff his cattle warmer and then
he's like I had bad news. This is like the
least disco song she has and it's stuff and then
(39:57):
him dancing and stuff in there is just really like
he gives himself that moment of like joy, you know,
which is really I like that nice.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
Well, move forward to Donald Glover scene.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Yes, yes, I think so. I also love when he
I thought you were gonna say when he like discovers
it too, like that we first meet him. That seems
really fun as well.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Cool but yes, cool.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
The explaining the Partnell maneuver is the scene.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
Cool baby, all right, we picked it.
Speaker 2 (40:31):
Well, let's go to show me the money, Show me
the money, show me.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Why don't you say something? I'm gonna throw another light
on It is storming outside, got dark in here, so
you started off.
Speaker 2 (40:49):
Okay, let's see it's right away. Uh did you guys
hear that Watney just discovered dirt? He's like, and what
are you working on today? Martinez making sure that the
mav is upright? And he's like, I'll have you know
that visual inspection is imperative to the mission. Also, I'm
happy to report that the mav is in fact still upright.
(41:11):
That was really fun. It's super early, but I loved
their little Yeah, oh we're interesting, Like we're immediately seeing
what's happening with these folks, which is really fun. Let's see.
I also love speaking of Nick Muhammad when he's like
thirty two minutes around trip communication time, all he can
(41:31):
do is ask yester or no questions, and all we
can do is point the camera. This won't exactly be
an Algonquin round table of reparte. Are you kidding me, Jim?
Just point the camera?
Speaker 3 (41:42):
Okay, yeah? Nice?
Speaker 2 (41:45):
He they said what we were all thinking, like, my god,
shut up, nope, read the room just a tiny bit.
Speaker 3 (41:53):
We're finally communicating.
Speaker 2 (41:55):
So he's like, so, yeah, I blew myself up. Best.
Guess I forgot to account for the excess oxygen I've
been exhaling when I did my calculations because I'm stupid.
Not His delivery of that line was so great, like
I felt very real. Yeah, he's so obviously smart. One
(42:17):
QUIPI fun one was seriously Johansson, It's like the Smithsonian
of loneliness in here her on there. I think he's
talking about her lap. I thought that was really fun.
I guess this is another Nick Muhammed one. But he
says he's reading back what he wrote, and he's like, Okay,
he says, they don't know. I'm alive. What the F
(42:40):
word F word in Jared form? F word again is
wrong with you? I just thought the F word in
Jared form really makes me gig really for not Rob obviously,
because he's very smart, but that's adding an I g
because my understanding is what a Jared is here F
(43:01):
word in Jaron formally?
Speaker 3 (43:05):
That is a nerdy way to say that.
Speaker 2 (43:07):
That's the most nerdy, the peak nerdist. Yeah, you want
to say a couple I have so many written.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
I do too, and it's mostly just quippy ye Wotney ones.
You know. I love his whole bit. He has this
kind of long little monologue. He's like, so I'm going
to be taking craft over in international waters without permission,
which by definition makes me a pirate Mark Wattney space.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
Space pirate and like, well, technically it would be international
waters and she's like yeah, he.
Speaker 5 (43:40):
Told yeah, yeah, I don't want to come off as
arrogant here, but I'm the greatest botanist on this planet.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
So great, so great.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
Pretty good that I love. In the face of overwhelming odds,
I'm left with only one option. I'm going to have
to science this.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Such a great line, a perfect line, just.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
A fun nerdy dude.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Yeah, head, he thinks about the movie they're going to
make some day about him.
Speaker 3 (44:18):
Yeah. I like when he is, uh, he is going
up to meet them finally, and then they have the
whole issue where they're coming in too low and he's
got to figure out and it figures out that if
he if he does something with his suit, he can
control where he's going with his arm. He's like, yes, yes,
(44:39):
those are all very good points. But consider this, I'd
get to fly around like Iron.
Speaker 2 (44:43):
Man, Commander, let's go iron Man. But consider this. Yeah,
that is really great.
Speaker 3 (44:50):
Yeah. And one fun one that Pat Nelson pointed out
to us and the last episode in Apollo thirteen, we
know why they say Rich Pernell is a steely eyed
missileman and they had used that in Apollo thirteen describing
(45:11):
Gene Krantz. Right yep.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Really fun, Yeah, really fun. And that's where I was like,
I didn't realize that was like a NASA thing, you know, yeah,
a NASA thing. Even it's great. I do love that one.
That's a good call. Yeah, why don't you say some
let's see. Uh, it's kind of similar to your Space
priate one but one owner. He's like, they say that
(45:33):
once you grow crops somewhere, you officially colonized it, So
technically I colonize Mars in your face, Neil Armstrong, Yeah,
Kristen Wig. When she's like I need a picture of
his face and I think it's Juba, Tel's like, well
I could have I could tell him to take off
his helmet, but he would you know, die die.
Speaker 3 (45:55):
Yeah. When he does the fun it's.
Speaker 2 (45:57):
A really fun, really fun and then I think, oh,
what did they say. Oh, they're getting like a status
upper update at one point, and she would tell us like, yeah,
he's been doing okay. He has a little hard time
with some of the botany people or whatever. He's like, why,
what's the problem. He's like, yeah, well, Mark has a
(46:19):
tendency to tell them to have sex with themselves when
they question one of his decisions.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
I like how he says that again.
Speaker 2 (46:25):
Just a super silly way of saying that. Right. The
whole el Ron thing, What the hell is Project Elron
el Ron because it's a secret meeting. It's the meeting
where they decide to destroy the one ring. If we're gonna
call something Project Elrond. I'd like my name to Pete Glorphandel.
I hate every one of you. Fun And at the
(46:50):
end when the commander's like, you're in Martinez his hands now,
and Watney just goes, well, tell that asshole no barrel
rolls's such a good line too.
Speaker 3 (47:02):
And that's still while he's like, yes, you know, it's.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
Just like that's the best I can come up with
right now. And when they're reunited, the first thing he
says is like, it's good to see you. You have
terrible taste in music, which I think is they're still
in space, I think at that point. And then when
they get inside the space shuttle and that he like
(47:30):
takes his helmet off. He's like, wha, look, got a
little smell going on over there. But he's like, yeah,
I haven't showered in a year and a half.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
I just love that. That's like in kind of the background,
you know, just like whoa, yeah, but yeah, did you
have other ones?
Speaker 3 (47:49):
I only had a couple more. Mars will come to
fear my botany powers.
Speaker 2 (47:53):
I did love that one. That's a good call for sure.
Speaker 3 (47:58):
I also loved You're getting quite the light display over here.
I got some serious stormage going. Oh I missed it
outside my window. You're gonna hear the thunder in my
audio for sure. Yes. So he has like a whole
bit about how pretty much he has to be in
(48:19):
this convertible into space and it's going to be super fast,
and he kind of has this long explanation. He's like,
so they're only doing that in the hopes that I
won't raise any objections to this lunacy because I like
the way fastest man in the history of space travel sounds.
I do like the way it sounds. I mean, I
(48:39):
like it a lot. I'm not going to tell them that, right,
just seeing him kind of process it, he's like, they
got me. I do like that.
Speaker 2 (48:51):
I love that too, because it shows probably that's what
he does all day, you know, like he's just talking
things through it himself. Right, Yeah, I do.
Speaker 3 (49:01):
I like it a lot, a lot.
Speaker 2 (49:04):
It's really Yeah, that's a super good.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
One and not not a great line, but it was
just funny in the context. He just he choose but
takes a bite out of potatoes, like it has been
seven days since I ran out of concha. Yeah, It's
like I could really feel that. Damn, that's a bomber.
Speaker 2 (49:22):
That's when he's doing the biking in too, right. I
think that's exactly Yeah, but that's all I got. I
loved when I can't remember what Maybe it's right before
they tell him that he's going to be in the convertible.
It's probably right around that time. But uh when he
writes are you f and kidding me? Or jar form
(49:44):
kidding me? And uh yeah becausey Davis, and they're like,
do you think he means it? Like are you kidding me?
Or like are you kidding me? And she's like, I
think I think it might be the second one. He's like, really,
because it couldn't be. Are you kidding me? He's like, yeah,
(50:04):
it could be that way.
Speaker 3 (50:08):
She switched it up.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
Just throw them a bone, Okay, Yeah, yeah, I was
really fun. Oh let's see. Oh, and I just loved
when he was like, but as long as he's talking
about the isotope, as long as I don't break it.
I almost said, everything will be fine out loud. The
(50:29):
point is I'm no longer cult. Just when he's like,
as long as I don't I'm an idiot, don't get
out of here. Yeah, I also loved Sorry Martinez, if
you didn't want me to go through your personal items,
you shouldn't have left me behind on this desolate planet.
Speaker 3 (50:46):
Yeah, I loved it. I loved it.
Speaker 2 (50:51):
And then his final speech I thought was really fun
when he's like, yes, I did survive, but yeah, the
deserted planet by farming my own ship. Yes, it's actually
worse than it sounds. So let's not talk about that ever. Again.
The other question I get the most frequently is when
I was stranded up there by myself, did I think
I was gonna die? Yes? Absolutely, And that's one you
need to know, right, you know, need to know going
(51:13):
in because it's going to happen to you. This is space.
It does not cooperate. At some point, everything is going
to go south on you. Everything is going to go
and you're gonna say, this is it. This is how
I end. Now. You can either accept that or you
can get to work. That's it. You just begin, you
do the math. You solve one problem, then you solve
the next one and the next, and if you solve enough,
(51:34):
you get to come home. All right. Any questions like
I just I love that, I think that's.
Speaker 3 (51:40):
Yeah, it was a great way to end.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
It's so fun to see him and the train, yes,
which is so great, and it's fun to see. I
love that we see like they didn't get court martialed
and he gets to go back to space, you know,
like we see the list going back to Yeah, he's
the only one. Everyone else was back on Earth. But
it's just fun, fun to see.
Speaker 3 (52:01):
That's fun.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
That was all the ones I wrote down, though, which
is funny, right one.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
Well, let's go to muse boohoo. It's only way. So
it was tough for me, I get, and I feel
like it might have been tough for you too, see
after seeing it this many times, maybe you're a little
more desensitized. So I kind of put that into play.
But I just wrote him too, and uh, the obvious
(52:29):
one when he hears the voice for the first time
and he's crying while trying to God.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
I love that so much. We should have maybe been
the scene of the movie. Honestly, that's so good, so good. Yeah,
I love that that.
Speaker 3 (52:42):
I think it's fine if we take the Donald over
scene in that for let's yeah, and then just when
he joins the ship with them. I know it's funny,
but like you see it's wonderful, how lovely there, Yeah, absolutely,
and there might and some other ones, but I personally, yeah,
(53:03):
I didn't get too choked up in the other spots.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Nice. There's just a couple more, Okay, let's see. Uh. Well,
the first is when they leave him because they really
don't want to obviously, and like they have that line
Sebastian stan is like my best one of my best
friends just died. I don't want to lose my commander
too or whatever like all that. That was nice. When
(53:25):
the hab is breached and he like breaks down in
the rover afterward, you know, when it explodes and all
the screaming and just like, you know, he's just like
another thing, you know. I don't know. That got me
for sure. I loved when they got to talk to him.
I just thought that was so fun, even though it
was text messages for us, it was like a conversation. Yeah,
(53:48):
it's a fun scene. Actually. I like that scene in general.
The Michael people, Yeah, they told us we can talk
to you now, you know all that stuff. I drew
the short straw yeah yeah, right right. And then the
last one I had was a really beautiful scene too.
But uh, the message to Commander Lewis about talking to
(54:08):
his parents after he's been like I might not make it.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
Back, you know, like, yeah, that's a really good one.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
And just that quote is so good when he's like
it's gonna suck, but that's why I need you to
do it. And then he's like, ye, tell him, I
love what I do.
Speaker 3 (54:25):
Thank him for being way. That's just so Yeah, that
was a beautiful scene. That's a good call.
Speaker 2 (54:30):
I choose those. But yeah, so it was what five
probably six? Ye, Yeah, we close.
Speaker 3 (54:37):
Didn't do great on that one.
Speaker 2 (54:38):
You did great as you do it.
Speaker 3 (54:40):
And this was some trivia rivia.
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Let's see Rich Purnell Donald Globber slips and falls as
he find when he like realizes he has a way
to help Mark Watney and he says, I need more coffee.
Speaker 1 (54:54):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (54:54):
It was revealed in an interview that that was real
and he just got up and kept going, so he
wasn't supposed to fall. It just happened and it.
Speaker 3 (55:01):
Was perfect knows, comedic timing anyway, really smart, really great.
Speaker 2 (55:11):
I thought this was fun. They they made a real
potato farm and it was installed on the studio a
lot with potatoes in all stages. Of growth so they
could be used for filming. I just think that's fun
to think about. NASA was consulted in order to get
aspects of the space travel and space correct, specifically in
relation to Mars, with the most accuracy. NASA's federally funded.
(55:33):
I didn't know this, but it doesn't charge anyone, including
private for profit organizations, any fees for use and access
to its archives and consultancies. So I just think that's cool.
They're like, well, this belongs to all of us a
little bit. That's cool. Apparently Matt Damon's solo scenes were
shot for five weeks straight, after which Damon was relieved
(55:56):
from the schedule and so consequently he didn't see most
of his co stars again until the cast was reunited
to promote the film. So just thinking about that would
be weird. But five weeks straight of solo shots Wolf.
Speaker 3 (56:11):
And another thing that's interesting about that. If that is true? Yeah,
did he Was he able to get that skinny in
five weeks?
Speaker 2 (56:20):
I think they said I think I have it later.
That was cgih actual. I think he was willing to
do it, but they were like, no, we don't, let's
not do so I think they used some cgi cool.
It might come up later, I can't see it first
scroll here. But this whole film was only seventy two
(56:42):
days of shooting, which seems pretty pretty short, really, I guess,
I don't know, but seems short. Let's see, ye two
and a half months. It's scientifically accurate that we can
survive in a vacuum for about a minute four things
go bad, which I didn't know. That's cool. I thought
(57:04):
this was interesting. So the atmospheric pressure on the Martian
surface is like zero point six percent of Earth's sea
level pressure, and it's so low that like a fear storm,
as they put it, would be something closer to a
very light breeze messing up your hair on Earth, so
that on Earth would create like a crazy storm up there.
(57:28):
And they also said that because the there's low air
density up there, the sound wouldn't be the same, so
obviously that would be different than that was different in
the film, right, And then they had to do some
crazy stuff where they like slowed down the footage to
make it look more floaty when they were onlike the surface,
(57:50):
which was pretty cool. But yeah, I just thought that
was interesting. Ridley Scott claimed that one of the most
difficult scenes to direct was how to explain to the
audience the hexadecimal system that Watney used as a code,
which I.
Speaker 3 (58:06):
Thought they did a good job.
Speaker 2 (58:07):
But that, yeah, I thought they did too, because I
was like, I mean, I don't really get it, but
enough enough to you know, go on like that's fun.
I just thought it was fun. Andy Weir wrote his
own computer programs using real Earth and Mars alignment data
to determine the best theoretical date for the area's three
emission to launch, which is seems overboard, but good for him.
(58:29):
Good for him.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
He was very very Adam and Ton making the math mass.
Speaker 2 (58:34):
Yeah, that is interesting. I just thought this was interesting.
The Olympus Mons is shown, which is in one of
the panoramic shots of Mars, and that's the largest discovered
volcano in the Solar System. It's three times larger than
Mount Everest and covers an area above the size of
Missouri apparently, but it's also twice as tall as Everest,
(58:58):
so that's just crazy to think of ut scale wise,
it's huge, huge. All of the exteriors on Mars were
shot inside the Korda Studios and Ettiech Hungary and they
built him inside of their The production designer Arthur Max.
We built it in Budapest in the Corda Studios, which
(59:20):
was the biggest. The reason we went there is because
it has the biggest stage in the world currently. It's
as big of an area as the Advanced stage in Pinewood,
the previous record holder, but it's twenty odd feet higher.
So we could go in and put the biggest green
screen in the world, a four walled green screen, and
it was enough space to do a big Martian landscape.
Drive our rover around at speed, reset, go around all
(59:43):
those things. So cool. Must be a giant place. So cool,
so cool.
Speaker 3 (59:49):
It's awesome.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
Yeah, because I was wondering where they, you know, did it.
Speaker 3 (59:52):
But yeah, sawhere, Papa.
Speaker 2 (59:58):
There's some Glorphindil information on. I don't know that people
actually care. I thought it was fun. Maybe I'll just
stay tuned for the Glorfandil hour after this. In the novel,
when Watney is rescued, he mentions that if this were
a Hollywood movie, the entire crew would gather in the
airlock and high five each other. And this is exactly
what happens at the end of the movie. I thought
that was really fun. I remember reading that. I was like, oh,
(01:00:19):
they did do that. That's fun, okay cool. Matt Damon
admitted that that scene where Mark is getting emotional upon
hearing Commander Lewis's voice was genuine. The other actors had
rapped and gone home, and their pre recorded voices were
actually being played to Damon inside his spacesuit. When Damon
began to think about how his character would have been
all alone on Mars for two years alongside how he
(01:00:43):
was only hearing pre recorded voices of his co stars
who had already finish their scenes, he began to tear up,
and Sir Ridley Scott was so impressed with his performance
that he only did one take of the scene, which
is the one used in the film. So that was
a one take shot and it's so good, awesome crazy.
(01:01:03):
When Nasa and Wantney first establish written communication, Wantney drops
an F bomb and he has warned to watch his
language because everything he types is being broadcast globally. In
the film, his response is not shown only the reaction
of others, but in the novel his response is look
a pair of boobs, and then he just does like
parentheses and you know, things to make it look like verbs.
(01:01:23):
I thought that's fun. Yeah, oh, and this is wild,
this is my last one. In the novel, it's revealed
that the Hermes crew has a contingency for if they
mangle the supply mission. In the rich Pernell maneuver maneuver,
it is decided that since Johansson is the smallest of
(01:01:45):
the crew and would thus require the least amount of food,
the rest of the crew will commit suicide so that
they a don't waste the valuable food supplies and b
she can eat them for protein, leaving her the sole
survivor when the supply run is a success. Martinez asked
who she was going to eat first, saying he thinks
(01:02:06):
that he'd taste best, and Johnson floats away from him
and he calls out, what I thought you'd liked, Mexican?
I thought that was fun? But why that would have
been a weird scene to have in the movie, very strange.
That was all I had. Did you have any trud.
Speaker 3 (01:02:26):
Just a little bit? I just saw Neil deGrasse. Tyson
said that it's the most accurate film he's ever seen
in regards to astrophysics and how Mars would be if inhabited,
which is always fun. I also saw that Drew Goddard,
who wrote the screenplay, was also at one point set
to direct, but he left that role to direct a
(01:02:46):
Spider Man spinoff that never materialized, and after that, Ridley
Scott read the script and joined the project.
Speaker 2 (01:02:53):
That's worked out, I guess.
Speaker 3 (01:02:55):
And lastly, Cate Blanchette was Sir Ridley Scott's original choice
for the role of Commander Lewis, and it would have
marked a reunion between the actress and director after Robin Hood,
but Blanchett couldn't take it due to a scheduling conflict,
and Jessica Chastain a pretty great number two to get.
Speaker 2 (01:03:18):
I will say, would I probably crushed it too, right,
I mean she's great as well.
Speaker 3 (01:03:23):
Both are incredible.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
Yeah, wow, that's cool. Interesting.
Speaker 3 (01:03:26):
That was all I had for actors up Nice. Further,
I think they got everyone else they wanted.
Speaker 2 (01:03:31):
It seems yeah, I don't know what else they do,
you know. Yeah, that's a good point for sure. Nice.
Will there be a sequel judgment day.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
No, But Project Hill Mary is coming out. It sounds
like March of next year.
Speaker 2 (01:03:48):
I need to start exercising not having too high expectations
before that. I know, I think it's gonna be fun.
But Tampa down, Tampa down.
Speaker 3 (01:03:59):
Team it down. So this is the part where we
play a game usually, and I definitely didn't think about
having somebody give us a name to do a last
Man Stanton.
Speaker 2 (01:04:16):
That's fair.
Speaker 3 (01:04:19):
So let's just brainstorm for a second here on the air.
Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
I have these cars live.
Speaker 3 (01:04:24):
You want to do a card yes, or.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
We could not play a game this time and doing
I don't know whatever you want to do, Babit.
Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
I'm down for whatever.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
I just or I'm sure to think of what other things.
Let say I have other cards, I have some other
movie or.
Speaker 3 (01:04:41):
I could look at like the IMDb's Top Hop, you
know they always have like who's trending currently, and we
could try and see if there's somebody there that, yeah,
we can do that. We could do their filmography, that's cool.
Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
Maybe the cards car because like one of us has
to like leave and then yeah, it's kind of weird,
and I'm open to doing that if you think that's best.
Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
Or Born Today, Born Today Catherine Zada Jones, will Smith,
Mark Hammill, Michael Douglas is interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
That would have very many for him.
Speaker 3 (01:05:26):
I mean he's been like, he's been in a bunch
of things.
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Have we done Will Smith?
Speaker 3 (01:05:34):
Oh? Yeah, have we here? I have the list? But sorry, guys,
this is probably very entertaining.
Speaker 2 (01:05:43):
It's okay, you're learning about.
Speaker 3 (01:05:46):
Last time, Stanton. Yeah, we've done Will Smith. Dang it.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
I'm not doing well on Michael Douglas in my brain.
Speaker 3 (01:05:58):
Most popular celebrities. Okay, Robert Redford is number one.
Speaker 2 (01:06:03):
I'm only seeing a few, but.
Speaker 3 (01:06:06):
I know a couple I would do better on Douglas.
Charlie Sheen, for whatever reason, is number six right now. Wow, Leo,
we have done twice. Jason Bateman is fifteen.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
Well, that'd be we could try Baitman. Have we done
him before?
Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:06:29):
It might be kind of short, but we could try
it be.
Speaker 3 (01:06:31):
Short, but let's do it. I just watched him in
Black Rabbit. It's very uh uh apropos.
Speaker 2 (01:06:39):
All right, so we're doing Baitman. We're doing Baitmann, bait
MANA and okay, okay, well I just start with Horrible Bosses.
Speaker 3 (01:06:55):
Horrible Bosses too. We did that quickly.
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
Yeah. H What else is he being in? Is it
called the change up? I think that's what it's called.
Speaker 3 (01:07:08):
That is what it's called him and right. Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I'm gonna do Game Night.
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
Great one, dude, God, that movie is fun.
Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:07:22):
It was probably too early to do it. But I
don't have a lot. I'm gonna say no, let's try
to think of something else. So I don't think you'll
know that one.
Speaker 3 (01:07:34):
Ooh you think so?
Speaker 2 (01:07:35):
Huh I do maybe maybe maybe I'm gonna say bad words.
Speaker 3 (01:07:45):
Oh that that did not.
Speaker 2 (01:07:47):
I only have deep cuts in my brain right now,
which is really good.
Speaker 3 (01:07:50):
Yeah, it's one that's not a deep cut because we
just did an episode on it a couple of weeks ago.
Was necessary rough.
Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
Call? Uh teen wolf two?
Speaker 3 (01:08:04):
Damn it. That is a fun one.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
Yeah, for like the movie, game or the.
Speaker 3 (01:08:11):
And just whenever they're talking on SmartLess and they just
kind of give them flag for it. Let's go with.
I believe it's called identity theft.
Speaker 2 (01:08:22):
Yeah, I think you're right. I think that is what
it's called.
Speaker 3 (01:08:25):
Yeah, no, identity.
Speaker 2 (01:08:27):
You didn't do a couple with her?
Speaker 3 (01:08:29):
God I can't remember though.
Speaker 2 (01:08:35):
Poopy sticks. Uh, I'm gonna say extract.
Speaker 3 (01:08:44):
Oh did you ever see that?
Speaker 2 (01:08:45):
That was my people?
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
I was.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
He I believe, I believe it's the Kevin Hart Dwayne
the Rock Johnson one Central Intelligence Agency where he plays
a total dicky she like used to uh he used
to be a bully of Kevin Hartz back in the day,
and then he like goes to confront him. I'm pretty
(01:09:10):
sure it's that.
Speaker 2 (01:09:11):
Here right as well? Yes, Central Intelligence, yep, good call. Yeah,
uh oh uh that's him, right, Yeah, I'm not sure,
but I guess I should just try Anything's utopia. That's him, right, yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:09:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it absolutely is him. I was trying
to even think of kids ones and that would have
been the one.
Speaker 2 (01:09:42):
They're coming up with another one. Did you see that?
That's fun?
Speaker 3 (01:09:47):
And that was a long time.
Speaker 2 (01:09:48):
I know, I was kind of surprised they were doing
it now, but right.
Speaker 3 (01:09:54):
I am running out and that makes me feel better.
I might just the other one that he did that
Melissa McCarthy is in. It was Melissa McCarthy and Octavia
Spencer and it was a not very good movie called
thunder Force. Oh yeah, plays a guy with like crab
(01:10:15):
hands and it's.
Speaker 2 (01:10:16):
Okay, so it sounds weird, okay, isn't he also? Oh no,
oh oh, did just leave my brain? Where did it go?
Come back. I need you, boy. I'm not gonna remember
what it is. I think you've won, so maybe just
help me on this one. He was just in that movie.
(01:10:38):
It's a Netflix movie and he's the bad guy and
it just came out. It's the Airport one with yeah,
what's his name?
Speaker 3 (01:10:45):
What was it called like Baggage Claim or something or.
Speaker 2 (01:10:48):
Maybe I don't remember what the title is at all.
Speaker 3 (01:10:51):
Oh my god, Yeah, with Terry Anderson.
Speaker 2 (01:10:54):
It was a pretty it was a pretty okay movie too, Like.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Yeah, I can't remember what it was. Yeah, that's funny.
I couldn't think of that at.
Speaker 2 (01:11:04):
All, because that's the best I got. What one did
you have?
Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
One that just popped into my brain because I was like,
I swear he was in like more dramas, but he
was the douchey husband in juno.
Speaker 2 (01:11:17):
Oh good call. Yeah he was right.
Speaker 3 (01:11:21):
And then the other thing that I had was he
has this cameo and he plays this guy that has
like herpies on his mouth and it was the movie
Smoking Aces. Did you ever see that movie Smoking Ace? Dude?
That is another one that is just jam packed with
(01:11:41):
a cast, but it was it was pretty crazy.
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
I never did see that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
It was kind of a fun one.
Speaker 2 (01:11:49):
You should check that out.
Speaker 3 (01:11:50):
That was like Chris Pine before I knew Chris Pine.
He just has a small role.
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Oh. That movie was called carry On, so baggage you're.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, I had something to do with luggage.
Speaker 2 (01:12:06):
Oh we should have got Air.
Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
Oh I loved Air and I loved him.
Speaker 2 (01:12:13):
Darn it. Uh, Fool's Paradise, which I haven't seen, thunder Forest,
Game Night.
Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
Oh he was. Would have been in Couple's Retreat too,
wasn't Oh a lot of those because wasn't he in
the breakup too?
Speaker 2 (01:12:27):
And like, oh god, was he in the breakup?
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
Wasn't he like the lawyers retreat?
Speaker 2 (01:12:34):
He was in the up in the Air, which I
didn't remember. Uh forgetting Sarah Marshall. Oh yeah, he's in
the show with her, damn it the end of it.
Speaker 3 (01:12:48):
Yes, where she can like hear Animal's voice.
Speaker 2 (01:12:51):
Yeah, yeah, you're right, he is the he's in the breakup,
He's in Dodgeball. Oh yeah, we're dumb. This was not
our balls the sweetest thing.
Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
I feel like we've got some pretty deep pulls and
we missed some of the obvious.
Speaker 2 (01:13:08):
What we did. Oh boy, those were honestly, most of
the ones we missed though. Oh this is where I
leave you. I forgot he was in that. Oh yeah,
I thought that was going to be more fun than
it was. I mean it was good, it was more
of a drama.
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
Yeah. Oh, Office Christmas Party was fun.
Speaker 2 (01:13:26):
I liked that. I missed that one when I was
looking to.
