Speaker 1 (00:00):
Shut up and down. Welcome to the Bricks King Podcast,
where I'm gonna bend your ear about Lego review those
(00:23):
amazing bricks of plastic, discuss what is new and up
and coming around the Lego world. I'm your minifig host, Matt.
Let's build on it. Welcome in everybody. How are you
doing today? Hopefully you're doing great. Finally into uh some
some new things here, some twenty twenty five stuff, and
uh boy, it's been a journey, and sometime in February,
(00:47):
I'm gonna share that journey with you guys. It'll mark
a an early anniversary of sorts and I I've thought
about how to do it, and we're gonna wait until then.
So I'll have a special episode in just just about
a month from now at the time of this recording,
(01:08):
and we're gonna lay everything out for me, for everything
for me, basically, but for those of you that have
been along for the ride for years, whether you're day
one listener or you've been around since twenty eighteen when
the podcast started, or anywhere in between. So let's go
(01:29):
ahead and get into something fun that I've been meaning.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
To talk about.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
I've had built here for about a month and uh
maybe two months or so, and it's just been sitting
here and we're gonna go ahead and get into it.
So we're gonna talk today about the Blacktron Renegade. It
is currently available in case you're wondering, I was fortunate
enough to get this early. Next month, we'll go through
the whole shebang and you can you can hear all
(01:53):
the inside details and stuff like that with what's been
going on anyway with the Blacktron Renegade retails for one
hundred bucks, pretty good price. Eleven hundred and fifty one
pieces comes with three minifigs one zero, three, fivey five
is the set number. Now here's the thing Lego has
done over the last few years. I want to say,
as far back as three years ago is where they
really started to hit that nostalgia button. Started to make
(02:16):
some of the old Castle stuff, some some piraty type things,
the Black Tron, am Tron, you know, that whole thing,
teases of Bionicle, which I wouldn't really see as old school,
but somebody definitely does all these all these little things
that people people gravitate to and they grab onto and
they're like, oh, we could do this or this is
(02:38):
I can't wait to be able to build this because
it reminds me of my childhood. This, that and the other,
and there's there's so many different opportunities to be able
to do stuff like that and just have have that moment,
have that enjoyment, and and get back to you know
those moments where you, as a kid, or maybe as
an adult or a young adult, you just really enjoyed
(02:59):
a certain thing. Blacktron was one of those things I
didn't have a lot of. I had some of the
smaller sets. Can't even probably tell you specifically what are
which ones, but I know I've got original minifigs from
that point, from that era that I still have in
my collection. And when this came about and it showed
up on my doorstep, I was blown away. I was
(03:21):
taken way back, just a lot of fun. So let's
go ahead and get into this. As I said, there's
three minifigs in this. All the minifigs on the outside
look the same. If you've ever seen a Blacktron minifig,
you're not gonna be shocked at all. They all look
literally identical, which I guess is supposed to be the point.
(03:41):
They have some air canisters and stuff like that. And
then you have their black helmets, their blacked out helmets.
And then on the front and the back they have
that gray printing that is on here, the silver printing
whatever you want to call it, of their vest or
their belts or whatever. And they have the old style
minifig head, which is great. I love to see that,
(04:03):
you know, classic, just single face, two eyes and a
and a partially smiling mouth. It's good to see. You
also get a little robot in here, tiny little mini
build of a robot.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Now there are.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Multiple builds to this. We're going to talk about the
main feature build. I'm not going to get into the others.
I did not build. Uh, the secondary build that comes
with it. I think it's just too I believe it's
just too I didn't do that. Now, one of the
cool things. Again, if you recall when we had the
Blacktron over I guess it was over the summer. I
(04:36):
believe early summer. It was a more of a modular experience.
And that's again kind of where we're at to a
certain degree here. But you get you get some cool stuff.
So the front of this thing, it is quite long,
by the way, we're talking about a good foot and
a half, you know, in in length, maybe maybe closer
to two feet in length. Some some good stuff here
(05:00):
very front here this fuselage where you've got your pilot
and your copilot whatever. You have two spots on the
inside of here. We have that trans kind of yellow
wingshield here, this canopy top that we've got going on.
We do have a print in here of the control
panel and some control panels on each side of the
(05:21):
co pilot. Got some sticks in there, good stuff in there.
We've got this faux weapon that is in the front
with the little trans red cone in the front.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
And then we have this side this what are you
gonna call it?
Speaker 1 (05:34):
This giant weird clipped tile that is printed as well.
I don't believe there are any stickers in here, if
I'm not mistaken, So that is always a plus in
its own. But the wings can kind of flare out
on the side. You have some faux weapons that are
there that don't really have any functionality. They're just there
for looks. But it does clip into the main section
of this thing in case you wanted to do it
(05:56):
like that, you know, have it as have it's a
standalone or maybe you want to pretend that it's being
shot off or display it as it's being shot off,
you know, getting into a different kind of pose or
something like that. Now on each wing we do have
these little flyers. They remind me of something from Star Wars.
I know you Star Wars people are gonna.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Beat me over the head, like whoa dude, way over
the top.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Not Star Wars. I get what you're saying. I hear you,
apeel you. However, we've got these little flyers. You can
imagine they're just kind of like a little probes that
are going out into deep space or onto a planet
or whatever. They just too little stud connection on each
side of the wing, on each wing, So that is
nice to be able to have in there as well.
(06:40):
The main center part of this ship, we have another
kind of little uh probe delia that we've got going
on here. You can pretend it's a probe or not.
It doesn't really matter, but it can come off that
we have in here. The coolest part about this, and
I'm going to get to it here in a second,
is the vehicle.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Love.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
How the vehicle is attached here and how it can
be used, and it's whether it be just you know,
as a part of the whole thing, or just you know,
its own deal. You know, you get down to the
planet surface and you're like, hey, we need to we
need to see what's going on here. So we've got
some struts that are running down the center the center
you have your dead center where you have your vehicle
(07:21):
that's held into place. We'll talk about the mechanism here
in a minute. And then you have your kind of
your strut, your frame assembly that is running down either
side of that of your spacecraft. In there, we have
some you can call these canisters of fuel, explosives, something
else that you want to drop onto the planet's surface,
(07:43):
whatever you want to call them. However you want to
use them, whatever you want to intend them for. The
cool thing is they do have a tiny little clip
into place so that they aren't moving around in case
you want to be able to use them, or in case, yeah,
in case you don't want to use them. You don't
want them moving all about as you're flipping and flopping
this thing all over the place. And I will say this,
(08:05):
the ability to be able to fly this thing around
one handed with an adult hand. Again, I got tiny
ole girl hands. The ability to be able to do
that is huge here. The swish ability, swish ability is
phenomenal with this. There was not one moment where I thought,
oh my god, this is gonna break, never felt that,
never had that moment, never thought something was gonna fall off,
(08:26):
which is a credit to the design, which is phenomenal anyway,
So anyhe you've got your uh, you got your little
fuselage area here, I guess your main if you will,
where your your vehicle is just kind of chilling here
in the middle. You can fly around, you can hold
it there, uh you just kind of put a finger
(08:47):
under it to support it, or you can let it
go and be completely secure and knowing that it is
not going to fall out regardless. Now in the very
rear of this, we've got our engines. Engines are just there,
not really to do anything what I would consider to
do anything special. They do clip into place, you can
remove them again modular theme. Things can move, things can
(09:10):
be repurposed, put into different positions to get whatever you want.
And I mentioned that you can also take one of
those engines and put it on the back of the
very front where your cabin was, where we had our
pilot and our copilot you can absolutely do. That makes
it a lot of fun, given you a different kind
(09:31):
of play experience and everything in general.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Now in between those engines which.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
Are nice and bulky built up, I do love the
black with a yellow and then the trans red glow
out the back. That's just oh, got to just love it.
It's so great. Your vehicle. How are you going to
get this land vehicle, this four wheeled vehicle out? How
are you going to get it down to the planet's surface. Well,
you land and then you release it. Well, how are
you going to release it? Well, there is a really
(09:58):
ingenious erbanded mechanism that is in here, gorgeous design with
so such a such a pleasure to be able to
build and just see the mechanics that in the engineering,
the lego engineering that went behind it to be able
to get its function to do what it means to do,
but do it flawlessly and in the same way fun
(10:21):
and kind of almost simple to duplicate in your own
if you wanted to choose to do something like this
with a mock. Because it's really just a tension uh
tensioner that is holding your vehicle. That's really all it is.
So you can you move this thing to the left,
door to the right, and what it'll do is it'll
release your vehicle you it has Mine is still a
(10:43):
little bit firm snug, so you've you've kind of got
to give it a little almost like a downward thrust
or just kind of poke on the vehicle to get
it to pop free. But when you do that, pops
out the bottom and you've got your four wheeled vehicle. Here.
This UTV eight TV whatever you want to call it,
planetary rover something, whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
I love the design of this.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
It's it feels like a it feels like one of
those vehicles, a tug. It feels like one of those vehicles,
a tug like I had mentioned that toes around the
planes at a at an airport, right, something almost like
that very small compact kind of bulky in its own right,
but in the same way, it just kind of, you know,
(11:28):
just serves this weird kind of function.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
It's just I dig it. It's a little profile. I
dig it.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
Now the canopy opens up from the front. You can
put your minifig in there. You have two little one
by two cheese wedge pieces here. One has a well
they both have different read outs and stuff on their
different buttons and stuff like that. Printed of course has
this steering wheel here. It only holds one minifig, but
(11:54):
that's that's fine. Put your minifig in there and you
can go. Now, the back end of this it does
have a cargo bay, you know, somewhere where you can
put cargo that you're coming across. Maybe you want to
take one of the little probes and you want to
go put it on the a different spot on the
on the planet's surface, or on the moon surface, or
(12:14):
on the surface of whatever.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Land mass you were on.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
You could theoretically put it on there as well, or
you can put your little robot on here and let
your little robot do his little robot delios. Cool little
build for the robot, by the way. But on the
back of this, on the back of the vehicle here,
we do have that cargo space, another cheese slope piece
back here, and it is just simply for you know,
(12:39):
same kind of simple readout, a planetary readout that is
on here. But we do have spots for weapons or
if you don't want to call them weapons, research tools
or something like that. We do have a little mind detector.
That's what I want to call it. I don't want
to call it anything else. It's a mind detector, metal detector. Mind.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
It's looking for lunar minds. All right.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
We are in a We are in a lunar war
right now. With m drown It's probably not even a thing,
probably was never intended to be a thing, but it
is now a thing in my realm. Okay, don't don't
you mess with my dream. Totally kidding anyway. So those
are kind of clipped into place. You could remove those
or not, completely up to you. But again, the opportunity
(13:25):
to be able to hold and store weapons huge, absolutely huge.
We also have a lunar kind of I keep saying
lunar whatever, planetary blaster, rifle, whatever you want to call
this thing. Maybe it's a camera of some sorts, but
you have that as well. Now, when you want to
go ahead and put this puppy back in, you can
(13:47):
either pretend and hover your craft above it and clip
it kind of into place, or you can just kind
of shove it back down. Either way really works. But
odd's doing. As you're lining up the pieces on the side,
there are arrows there printed arrow pieces. One on each side,
and you're just lining that up on the side of
(14:07):
the vehicle where it's kind of cut inward a little
bit in the way it is designed so that you
have that opportunity to be able to grasp it and
hold on to it. Really nice, simple design. But again,
like I said, functional fun different a it's one of
those things. Again not a big mocker here at all,
(14:29):
but it's one of those things that you just have
that opportunity to be able to learn from a designer
that has done it trial and error, a team of
designers that have done it trial and air, this entire thing,
and now you have that opportunity to be able to
kind of just jump into what they gained from it,
and you don't have to go through all the trials
(14:51):
and tribulations you're going to have to with whatever mock
you're building, but you have that opportunity to be able
to glean there, you know, something from their experiencearience, move
it on to whatever you're going to build. It's basically
what I'm saying is it's a cool opportunity. It's a
cool experience to be able to learn from a designer
or design team a new style, a new way of
(15:12):
building something. And maybe you already know this, but for
us Nubes here it's always fascinating. So the model as
a whole, I think model I just said model. My god,
the set as a whole. I've been watching too many
model things. My nephew's big in a train modeling, model trains,
I guess is what it is not train modeling, And
(15:33):
I've been watching a lot of model train videos of
people with their whole big setups and stuff. Not that
I would ever do that because that is not the
tedium that I'm interested in. But AnyWho, it's a big,
big set. The one hundred dollars value, let's talk about it.
I know a lot of people kind of look at
this and they say, ooh, I honestly think under one
(15:55):
hundred dollars, you're really looking solid here. I don't think
this is something that's going to end up being discounted
in the future. You know, if you can get it
double VIP points or something like that, you know, that's different.
But I just don't see something like this being discounted,
nor do I honestly think it should be. I think
(16:16):
the price point is solid on it. I think, you know,
eleven hundred and fifty one pieces. Pretty good. That's in
that wheelhouse. That's where we kind of should be. You
get a nostalgic theme with a modern twist put on it.
I think that's pretty solid. You know, you're getting a
couple of minifigs. Granted they are duplicates, they are identical
in every single way other than their personalities that you
(16:38):
choose to give them or maybe you don't.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Either way, pretty solid.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
I just like the idea of something old being made
into something new, and the new version of it being.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Interesting in the sense.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
That you have new pieces, you have new techniques, you
have these new abilities to bring that. You know, we're
not a thirty years ago. Now you have that thirty
five years ago.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Now you have that. Now we have that. Now we
have different pieces, different colors. Is that weren't around back then?
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Although I think everything on here is pretty much the
same color. I'm pretty pretty darn sure. However, out of
a build quality, I out of ten, All right, let's
go out of ten here a build quality, I think
you've you've got to give this probably a solid solid nine.
I would have liked to see some other things added
(17:32):
to it, maybe maybe some more faux weaponry. I think
that would have been kind of neat, not as much
as I would have liked, but still solid, good cool.
The modularity aspect of it, I think makes it a
big time deal. You know that you get multiple models
in this, that you can be able to do that
kind of get these like walkers as well as walking machines.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
I guess if that's what you wantn't call it walking machines,
walkers whatever. I like that.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
I like the ability to be able to take something
and rebuild it, repurpose it into something else. Now, if
you bought two kids and you were like, you know what,
I'm gonna buy one and I'm gonna build the main model,
and i'm gonna buy another and i'm gonna build the
secondary model, that's great on you. I think that's the tops.
But yeah, price, I think the price, like I said,
(18:20):
is spot on. I think the value is there for it.
Nostalgia is one of those other things that you can't
really put a price on. Nostalgia For a lot of folks,
there are certain things that I'm nostalgic about from my childhood.
Seems to be the generation I'm in that I grew
up in, you know, remaking all these toys from when
(18:41):
I was a kid, whether it be Lego, whether it
be an action figure or a play set or something
like that. Everybody's everybody trying to reach into my pocket
and just take stuff. And it's absolutely mind numbing. Just
every day. It's just like, oh my god, what are
y'all doing to me? But nostalgia Obviously for some folks,
(19:02):
you know, one hundred dollars, it could be like done again,
new twist, new kind of set. But at the end
of the day, for some people, like I said, the
nostalgia is just gonna win over. It doesn't matter. It
doesn't matter. It could be three hundred dollars, it doesn't matter.
Nostalgia's gonna win out on a lot of things. Assuming
you have the funds and you're not going into debt
(19:22):
to be able to acquire this or anything else in
the Lego catalog, which do not go into debt for anything. Okay,
don't do it. Not that I have, I'm just saying,
don't do it. It's not worth it. I need to stop
watching finance videos on YouTube. That's what I need to do. Anyway,
as a whole, I probably give this thing, probably like
(19:45):
a nine point two nine point three. You know I
can sit there at that nine in a quarter out
of ten and be completely happy.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
And I know a lot of.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
You are probably saying, oh my god, now you so
many times you give things like a nine. I don't
think anything will ever be a perfect ten. I think
there are some things that are gonna be really close
to a perfect ten. But I don't think anything will
ever be a perfect ten. But I could be wrong.
There may be something coming in the future that I'm
is just gonna absolutely blow my mind away, and I'm
(20:16):
not gonna be able to do anything other than a
perfect ten.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
You just never know. Again, it could have all the factors.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
It could have nostalgia, it could have price, it could
have parts, it could.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
You never know. You never know.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
And my opinion is different than yours. You know, your
market may vary, kind of thing, your opinion may vary. AnyWho,
so solid nine point two nine point three here for me,
You guys have to let me know what you think.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
I think it's I think it's solid. AnyWho.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
But this was a fun episode. I had a blast.
First time I've really really actually been back in the
studio and felt comfortable, actually kind of had a semi
my solid feeling. So with that said, that's gonna wrap
up this episode. We will be back we have the
(21:08):
energy in about a month end of February, last couple
days of February. Make sure you set your calendars because
it's gonna be a doozy. You might need to bring
some tissues.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Who knows.
Speaker 1 (21:19):
I definitely will, I definitely will. So with that said,
hope you all have a lovely day no matter where
you are in the world, whether it be day, morning, night, evening,
I wish you all the best. Until we meet again,
I'm your minifig ghost Matts. Let's build on it.
