Speaker 1 (00:00):
Shut up and welcome to the Bricks King Podcast, where
I'm gonna beanjur here about Lego, review those amazing bricks
(00:23):
of plastic, and discuss what is new and up and
coming around the Lego world. I'm your minifigos Matt Let's
built on it. Welcome in everybody. How you doing, Hopefully
you're doing quite lovely. I'm doing well myself, fighting off
a little allergy dilemma with this up down weather in Texas,
(00:44):
my dear God. But today we've got a few things
that I wanted to talk about, some topics that are
really leading into a really kickoff, bang up of a
beginning of a year season for Lego, for the Lego group,
for these Lego products, and man it is it is
(01:06):
really exciting to see what is coming down the pipeline.
If you've been living under a rock like I kind
of feel like I have been. As we talked about
just quick briefly in the past episode, things are moving
fast and furious in the Lego world. And one of
the things that I absolutely found absolutely fascinating is this,
(01:29):
and I've been keeping close tabs on this, the Build
Your Nostalgia contest right the nineties Starwback challenge and it
popped up again on my social media again today from
one of the creators. They I think Brick project, it's
the Brick the Brick project or I think it's just
(01:51):
brick project. AnyWho popped up and I was like, Okay,
well crap, yeah, I need to vote, Like we're kind
of at that point, you know, everybody.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Like, okay voting.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
You know this this final the final five for this
contest has been revealed and they are exquisite and they
are some of the coolest builds that are really out
there that we're gonna get from Lego Ideas. Now, two
of these are going to be chosen. One is going
(02:25):
to be made a set sooner rather than later, and
then another will be later down the road. Now there's
only five choices, so let's let's just talk about a
few of these, right, these five, there's a few.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
We're going to talk about all five of them.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
The first one is Edward Scissorhans by Castor Troy. Edward
Scissor Hans is one of the iconic films of the nineties.
Johnny deb very bizarre, Tim Burton, you know, you know
it's a Tim Burton film.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Through and through, just from.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Immediately flipping on the flick and just seeing and experiencing
everything that is in it, from the costume design to
the set design, to the acting, to the makeup, to
everything just screams Tim Burton. Now, this model is, this
build is way more than.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
I would have ever expected.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
It's forty nine hundred pieces. It is big. It's really
really big. It's a three hundred and sixty degree castle.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
So it's a full deal, the full build.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
It looks great from the outside. I absolutely adore this build.
I would love to see this become a set. I
think this would be extraordinary, but I like this would
not be the one that I would choose from. Now.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
You get your cool.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Characters in it, right, you know, you get your Edward
Scissor Hands. And I can't remember the name of the mom.
Oh my god, it's gonna drive me nuts. But she's
in here. Oh it's Peg. Peg is in this the
other I guess the main character if you will, the female.
But I gotta say I think the exterior of this
(04:09):
just the dilapidation of this castle, of this overgrown field
to it just it screams everything.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
For Lego ideas. It really truly does.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
The Peace count part count I think is gonna be
potentially one of those things that might have it pushed
to the side. Would I would love this. I think
this would go well with a lot of different kind
of you know, kind of kitchy sculpts and stuff like
that from you know, the Brickling Designer Program. That's that's
really where it kind of feels like it's got its
(04:44):
muscle right, it's really got its frame, its bones and
stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Is the Designer Program.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
That's where this kind of fits mentally for me physically,
the look of it really kind of fits there more
so than many other places around. But it's still a
really great looking build. One of the other submissions here
is the X Files The Truth is Out There by
Brent Waller. We know Brent, Brent's done some stuff before.
(05:12):
He's not new here. His is really sharp looking. I
was not an X Files show watcher, seeing a few
episodes here and there, seeing the movies, love the movies.
Have seen the movies countless times, but never really watched
X Files. The X Files from beginning to end. Just
(05:34):
saw probably a dozen, maybe fifteen episodes total. I know,
I know, you know, people are what are you crazy.
It's just it wasn't it wasn't quite in my wheelhouse
of sci fi that it was really into. It is
really cool, it is and this build is it's what
we've come to expect from Brent. If you've not seen
(05:57):
his stuff, you need to go check it out. But
it's just kind of everything. It's a multi tiered build.
You have your spaceship that is floating up above top,
You've got your ailing, You've got Fox, Moldar and Scully
and uh, just really sharp. The trees are really well
done in here, and this is this is kind of
(06:18):
one of those builds where if you followed Bren's journey
just from just what he's submitted through lego ideas and
stuff like that or that you know he puts out there.
Every every build kind of grows a little bit more, right.
You see some techniques and he's not the only one.
There's so many out there. There's so many of you
out there. Each iteration that you do, each different kind
(06:40):
of build that you do, adds a little bit of
a different technique, adds a little bit of this or
that or the other, and it just really kind of
it's fun to watch the progression, the progression as it
goes through. Sorry, we're having some some mouth problems today
with this cold weather after it was eighty six degrees.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
To days ago. Anyway, I I love this.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
And then you have your your kind of your office
that is down underneath on that very very bottom level.
Plus you get a plethora of minifigs in here.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
I I just I like this build. I like what
it is.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
And there is a huge sci fi community out there.
There's definitely a huge x files community out there. The
question becomes, is this nostalgic enough? Of course it is.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
You know, you could have.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Done something Seinfeld. Seinfeld can't be in there because it's
already been in there, right, They've already done it. They're
not gonna do it again. With that in mind, I
think this would be a top notch kind of we're
gonna place this in there, We're gonna see what happens.
And you know, I wish, I wish Brent the best.
This still doesn't get my vote. If we're going to
(07:48):
vote out of the top five or out of these five,
the one that would get it for me, this isn't
it either, And it's not. It's not because he's not
a great designer. It's not that he's not really got
it something special here, it's just it's not my wheelhouse.
Everybody has their own little deal. Everybody's got their own
feelings and stuff like that, and it's just, yeah, you know.
(08:12):
The next one here is Buffy the Vampire Slayer Library
by VJW nineteen seventy eight. Buffy not really my wheelhouse,
not at all. You know, a favorite show from people
for people.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
You know, they've put a lot of Easter eggs in
here from certain seasons, certain episodes, so that is really
cool to be able to see that. Not my kind
of deal. Just do this year fact that while I
appreciate what the show was and how iconic it was
to so many different people, it didn't really you know,
scratch my itch or or you know, whatever other cliche
(08:56):
you want to fit in there. The library looks like
it's really nicely designed up leave. This is a digital
design only, but it's okay. It looks neat, it could
be fun. Nostalgia's there. I don't know anything about Buffy
the Vampire Slayer. I've seen the film, but I've not
watched the episodes of this TV show at all the
(09:20):
movie was Okay, I wouldn't you know, give it, you know,
a nine out of ten or even a seven out
of ten. But you know, again, nostalgia. It's there for somebody.
Somebody else is excited about it, somebody else is enjoying it,
and maybe, you know, if you want to, you can
go ahead and go to the Lego ideas page for
the challenge and go click on it, you know, vote
(09:44):
for this, you know, click the button and vote for it.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Again. This is just not something that's in my wheelhouse.
I just can't.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
I can't give it my a thumbs up for me.
There's just something about it that it just I don't again,
I don't know enough about it. It was not something
that I really ever thought about. So yeah, anyway, moving
on the Fifth Element book Nook and Playset.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
This is God. This is such a cool little project
by Cuba Taro.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
I think it's how maybe you say it. I'm sure
I just butchered that. Anyway, great film, the Fifth Element.
Love this, love what the project is. Love the buildings,
you know, built in the background, and then you have
the floating the hover cab built in the size scale
of the speed Champions, which I thought was was really
(10:38):
kind of cool as well. You've got this really futuristic
city and anybody that remembers the scene where Leelu as
they called her the fifth Element when she jumped where
did she jump from? I don't remember, and she landed
inside the cab, you know, and of course Bruce Willis's
character at that time was like, oh my god, you know,
(11:00):
I just got you know, another more points on my
license type thing. Not a good deal. So really really
fun idea. I think this is sharp. I like the
kind of modernality of it as far as you know,
the futuristic feel. The colors are phenomenal. They really pop.
(11:22):
A lot of really sharp build design that is in here,
really cool looking techniques, some really great parts usage here.
I could definitely see this rivaling as as a possibility.
The great thing about this is that it can open
up so you can get a city scape or you
can kind of close it up and get more of
(11:43):
a more of.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
A closer feel kind of from the scene.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
But there's also stuff that is on the back of this,
you know, the buildings that are on the back and stuff,
the the interior design and stuff. I believe Corbyn's Corbyn
Dallas will his character on the inside of his living quarters. Yeah, okay,
just really cool. And then you have the pod where
she was created from that piece.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
I'm all in.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
I think this would look sharp. I would one vote
for this. I will probably vote for this. This is
it's just sharp. And you know, all five are worthy
of votes, and we still have one more to talk about.
But it's it's not gonna get my like if I
were pressed against it, it would not get my vote
(12:33):
if I only had to choose one out of the five.
And that is because it's it's going to Jumanji by
Brick Project. This this look, I'm gonna you can probably
hear the smile on my face right now. I this
movie is so iconic. It's got Robin Williams. It's it's
(12:56):
such a fun film. It's such a fun build. You know,
it changes from a game board to you've got the
house that's in here, and you can actually kind of
if you well, I guess you could kind of go
through and play the game or whatnot. Point being all right,
this is only sixteen hundred pieces. You have your game tokens,
(13:18):
you have your minifigs. Okay, you get six, you get
Alan you get Sarah Whittle, you get Peter Sheppard Judy Shepherd,
which we know, you get Van Peltz, and you get
Carl Bentley, who was the cop that was in there
that I believe he worked at the shoe factory right beforehand.
But this thing comes apart into two sections. The house does,
(13:39):
and it's absolutely extraordinary. You have all these different little
vignettes that are in the back of it from scenes
in the movie, and I understand, you know what was
done with the Buffy one, where there are different things
that are in that build, different items that are in
that build that come from the seasons, right, just like
(13:59):
you vignettes here from the individual movie itself. It's really
well done. It's a really sharp looking build. I know
I keep saying that, but the game board on the
outside is so highly detailed, and you can say, oh,
but it's not a whole lot of color. It doesn't
have a ton of color for what it is, but
(14:20):
it works so well. And everything is stored inside of
this little game box, everything your minifigs and the house
and everything, and it's just I know, I'm crushing on it, right,
I'm absolutely crushing on it. I think it's so sharp looking.
Now here's here's the thing. One of the things that
I had mentioned right is that this thing is only
(14:41):
sixteen hundred pieces. That is a perfect price point. We're
looking at what one fifty maybe one eighty at most,
I would believe. Now, obviously it comes down to what
parts are being used, sizes and everything like that. Obviously
this is not a final rendition like it was. If
this wins and the design team get you know, goes
(15:01):
through this, they're gonna some things will change. But I
think that is the perfect spot for this. The fifth
element I thought was really a good one as well.
I just think this movie is so iconic for so
many different people. I really I really see this being,
without a doubt, something that probably gets the most votes.
(15:25):
The X Files is really a tough one as well.
But out of the five, look, if I were voting, okay,
out of the five, here's here's probably how I would go.
Jumanji would be my number one, without a doubt. By
Brick Project. I think it's great. I think it's awesome.
For me, it's it's my number one. The X Files
build and Edwards says her hands are two really tough
(15:46):
ones for me and here's why the Edward says or
hands one I would love to see built see become
a set. I would hate to see the price point
on it if it were staying at the the the
amount of pieces that are original built into this set,
I would not want that cost. I don't think I
could justify it enough for me to be like, yes,
(16:07):
I'm gonna throw pennies at this the X Files. While
I don't have a real big like, oh my god,
I have to have this. This is the greatest thing ever.
I know so much about this, I would still throw
money at it, just because it is a sharp looking
build and it would be something different. I do like
the fifth element the only thing about it for me,
(16:30):
And I know you've got some vignettes in the back
and stuff like that. It's more of like a almost
like a I think when I say cyberpunk here, I'm
probably using that incorrectly, but it feels kind of cyberpunk
to me too much for my likes. While the film
is great, I would have loved to see something else
with this, not just this little cityscape. But that's just
(16:51):
you know, that's just my preference. So I think it
would go Jumanji Number one. I think we're probably going
X Files number two. Edward Scissorhands is really really cool.
Cost reasons, I would probably say no and put it
at four just for that reason. The fifth Element will
probably be my number three, and then obviously Buffy the
(17:14):
Vampire Slayer Library would be a last. Again my own
personal reasons, not because I hate anybody or.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Anything like that.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
It's just not in my wheelhouse, right, It's not something
that I really find totally fascinating and interesting. So unfortunately
for me, that would be where you know, it ends up,
you know, just ends up in the bottom. Sorry, I'm
not trying to hurt anbody's feelings of promise. But yeah,
so that's that's what those are, my opinions, my thoughts
(17:48):
on it. If you do want to vote, you have.
I believe there's about ten days left. I want to say,
it's like the twentieth of this month of February of
twenty twenty five, So make sure you get your vote
in if you want to vote. I already did so,
but yeah, go ahead and go get your votes in.
Before we move any further, we've got to take a
(18:10):
quick break. We'll be back in a moment. Something else
I wanted to move on to and I'm trying to.
I'm trying to get some some background knowledge here from
someone and hopefully hopefully we can get that show together.
It'd be great if I could pull it together. You know,
this weekend. The new Jurassic World movie is coming July,
(18:33):
I want to say July second, July fifth. Anyway, it
is coming. It's coming quick. It'll be here before you
know it, and I'll have to go see it two
or three times in the theater until I get my fill.
Whether I think it's a good movie or not, whether
I think the premise is good or not, I don't
really know. You know, you can't really take too much
from a trailer and knowing so many people, not knowing
(18:56):
so many being a a an outside watcher, a closet
durastic community person, seeing all the opinions and thoughts and
ideas and you know, conceptions, preconceived notions, all this kind
of stuff that so many of the people in that
community have tom included. I just I really can't wait
(19:21):
for this, just to see because this is I think
this is going to be way more different than what
people really have seen or expected. So what we do
know is we are getting lego sets from this film,
which of course we are phenomenally we are. I cannot
wait to be able to get some of these and
(19:42):
build them and get new dinosaurs, some new dinosaurs that
we're getting in here. We're getting a spinosaurus. Never saw
a spinosaurus in lego form before. We're getting one really
kind of dark reddish brown, some light tan, dark tan
or whatever on the underbelly. Got that huge set. I
love it, absolutely, absolutely love it. With a different coloring
(20:05):
that is in there. I'm assuming it is going to
be roughly around the size of the t rex. I've
not seen it really compared next to anything else, but
it looks like it could be roughly that size, just
given it's its body pieces, you know, with its legs,
its arms and you know, tailsale head, you know, similar
(20:25):
sizing is what I would expect.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
There.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
We get the quets a quatless gets a quatless quets
a quatless whatever. I know I'm being butchered for this.
We're getting that. We're getting that in that that really
beautiful sand blue with some orange painting that is on it.
Same build, different colors. I love it. We need different
(20:50):
colored dinos of course, and since we got the Brachiosaurus,
we are going to be getting a similar mold. The
head is going to be different, but the neck and body,
and I'm assuming the tail is different. I'm pretty sure
the tail is different. I don't have my Brachiosaurus anywhere
near me at this point in time, but to be
able to get the Titanosaurus or is that the Titanosaurus anyway,
(21:14):
we're gonna be getting that white painting on just a
dark gray body, and it's got that giant kind of
what looks like an air filled sack on its nose,
which is kind of interesting in its own right, but
kind of like a whip looking tail from the perspective
of the photos that we've been given, that is going
to be a lot of fun. I'm really excited for
these three. They are again solid plastic dinos. Obviously, you
(21:39):
know those sets are going to increase in price, more
chunky plastic, more, more pennies, more finnigs. You have to,
you know, throw down for this kind of stuff. And
then we are left with a final dinosaur. It is
the the Mosasaurus. The Mosasaurus. This is interesting because it
(22:00):
is a brick built dinosaur. Not just you know, fifteen
twenty thirty one hundred pieces. This is a doozy. There
were expectations that there might be a or I guess,
speculation that there might be a brick built dinosaur. I
mean we saw it with the t rex we saw.
I guess the gates don't really count as a brick
(22:21):
built dinosaur. I know people were hoping that something would
be out there. I think this looks really sharp, the
coloring looks really great in it. I'm gonna be curious
to see how this thing is built. I size wise,
is the biggest thing for me. It's got a rival.
It's got to rival the size of the Mosasaurus toy
(22:43):
that is going to be coming out from I believe
Mattel is it Mattel has Bro. I don't know anyway.
The thing is huge. It can eat hold dinosaurs, actual
toy dinosaurs. It needs to be held with two human
adult hands. It's that big. I think, obviously I don't
need a mosa source that big, but I would like something,
(23:03):
you know, a good twelve inches maybe sixteen inches long.
I think that's the wheelhouse that would be perfect. With
that in mind, I think we're probably looking at what
you've got to be looking at two thousand pieces minimum,
probably looking at one hundred and fifty No, it's probably
more than one hundred and fifty price tag depending. I'm
(23:25):
just looking at what elements are being presented here, not
anything super big, chunky plastic plates, tiles. Obviously, you've got
your joints and stuff like that for the fins, your
ball joints and stuff, and then for the body section
to make it look like it's swimming. Curious to see
how that's gonna come about, honestly, really curious to see
(23:45):
how that what a final build is going to look
like on something like that, just because you honestly never know.
You can hope for one thing, and then there are
times where you're just like, I really, Bob, I really
don't know what this is gonna look like, and you don't.
It's it's really hard to predict what that kind of
(24:06):
build is gonna look like.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Just uh yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I
I hope it is big.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Enough though that it it doesn't look puny and it
makes that community happy, honestly, just because if it if
we don't get something that is gonna scratch that itch
you're gonna get complaints. You're gonna have people saying, well,
we should have had something bigger, or we should have
had a different dinosaur. Maybe we said should have had
a spinosaurs Egypt Kuss say to a gym tripping over
(24:36):
my tongue. But either way, I think I think it's
I think it'll be fun, it'll be exciting, it could
be hopefully the beginning of more moving forward. I think
that is the biggest thing. I think a lot of
people moving forward want to have something that is even
(24:56):
even more dinosaurs. That's what I would like to see.
But yeah, so those those are the main talking points
that I'm wanting to hit just because they're both huge.
That movie is going to do Gangbusters and this nostalgia challenge.
The reason the reason I specifically I want to talk
about it is because I think moving forward Lego can
(25:20):
really you look at the Lego Ideas platform and what
it is and what it stands for, and what it
has done for creators, what it has done for collectors,
what it has done for just people in.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
General that are in the Lego hobby.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
I've gotten some really cool builds, gotten some that you're
kind of like, oh, I don't quite understand this, but
the range is so varied from the beginning of it
until I don't even know what's that number we're at
at this point, but there are so many in between.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Now you add in this.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Little facet of Okay, well, we're going to do a
challenge from time to time. It's a nostalgy challenge. It's
got to be this many pieces, it's got to be
about this theme that within this timeframe, what can you
give me? And I think all of them did a
great job. But moving forward, I hope there's more of that.
I hope we get a different decades type one. I
(26:06):
hope we get something from like the sixties. I'd love
something from like a forties or fifties Disney movie or something,
or a Disney challenge from a certain period of decades
or you know, I guess Disney would have to sign
off on something like that, but you get my point, right,
I would love to be able to see something like
(26:27):
that moving forward, just because there's so many, so many
really untapped, untouched abilities for creators out there that they
could take. You know, right now, the movie one hundred
and one Dalmatians, the animated one just keeps popping in
my head and I don't know why. I'm talking about
nostalgia themes and stuff like that. There's so many different
(26:49):
kind of twists that can be put on that. And
if Lega were to come out and say, Okay, we're
gonna do one hundred and one Dalmatians, We're gonna do Bambi,
We're gonna do Fox in that, We're gonna do you know,
different theme movies like that. Let you know, out of well,
let's say out of three movies, and we need we
need an iconic moment from one of those films. You choose,
(27:14):
whichever film, you choose, which scene, what is iconic, and
you know you go from there.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
I honestly think this is really just kind of the beginning.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
I know it's a nineties nostalgia challenge, but there's so
many different offshoots that can go from here, and that
gives so many different opportunities to be able to kind
of break down into smaller categories, to be able to
get more designs. Ultimately, if you're a business like the
Lego Group is, you are trying to make more money.
How do you make more money creating more products? How
(27:44):
do you create more products. Hello, Lego ideas cost you
basically nothing. People are bringing you the ideas that other
people are excited about, the designers creators are excited about,
and their fanfare is excited about as well. So I
just really, the sky is the limit for Lego ideas.
I hate to say that cliche, but it. I mean,
(28:05):
there's really not There's really no end in sight for it.
If you really stop and break it down and what
it looks like, there's really no end in sight. So
I would love to I would love to see more
of that. Anyway, I'm gonna stop talking, So that's gonna
wrap up this episode. Hope you guys enjoyed it. I
did go vote. Go vote for your project that you
enjoy the most. My Jumanji. I had to go get it.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
I had to.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
I had to vote for it. And that's that's where
I went. So until we meet again, I'm your minifighost Matt.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
Let's built on it.
