Speaker 1 (01:04):
I'm Geen McCarthy and you're listening to They'll Bobble Hour.
Hi everyone, Welcome to episode four, where we talk about
being perfectly imperfect. Now that might sound like a self
help topic. That's exactly the kind of thing we would
have talked about on this show, but no it's not.
It's a much more lighthearted take. This is where we
(01:26):
pause in all the serious emotional look back over the
past decade. Take a bit of time to laugh as
you're listening to this. Just picture me cracking up alone
at my computer. It was so much fun to find
music to enhance the ridiculousness of some of these moments,
(01:47):
and to put together montages. All of us had our
fair share of difficulties with the technology, making our own mistakes.
We all had our fair share of it. I will
start by poke fun at myself. This first segment you're
going to hear is me battling against the clock. Remember
in the last episode when I played you a little
(02:09):
bit of how menacing the robot voice was, so picture this.
You're on the line, You're trying to get all your
guests on the line, The robot is talking to you.
You're keeping your energy up. You're all ready to go
and broadcast live, ready for anything to happen, and then
everything goes wrong.
Speaker 8 (02:30):
My goodness, We are keeping it real tonight because we
had technical difficulties right down to the last minute. So
we're still hustling to gather people on the line. Sounds
like we're bringing someone in right now and we'll be
starting our show right away.
Speaker 9 (02:46):
Poor We'll wait.
Speaker 8 (02:50):
Our topic site should be stressed.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
I think.
Speaker 8 (03:00):
The suspense. Okay, I'm not sure that this is good
radio we're doing right now.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
That's all right, we'll get through it.
Speaker 8 (03:09):
We'll get through it.
Speaker 7 (03:11):
Well.
Speaker 8 (03:11):
This is the lovely, imperfect and very real Bubble Hour.
And even though we're all super stressed out right now,
we are not going to drink about this, are we not?
Speaker 5 (03:20):
All?
Speaker 8 (03:24):
Our topic tonight is people pleasing. Ironically, I don't feel
like I'm doing a great job as a hostess, but
we're going to bring it under control, because when you're
with people that love you, they forgive your imperfections. Right,
here's my intro. Here's how the show was supposed to
start out.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Hi.
Speaker 8 (03:40):
Everyone, this is a welcome to the Bubble Hour, where
real people tell real stories of addiction and recovery. My
co host tonight is Ellie. Right, Ellie, that's you.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Why it's tad to be here. I'm here.
Speaker 8 (03:55):
Oh thank god, I'm glad you're here. Amanda, are you on.
Speaker 9 (03:59):
The line, Well I am, I am. I'm just getting
one more person.
Speaker 8 (04:04):
Okay, have you been able to get through to that
number yet?
Speaker 9 (04:07):
Incorrect? So if you could text it to me, that
would be great.
Speaker 8 (04:10):
I'm going to text this guest right now and say
we have the wrong number for you. Maybe she's listening
and I can't text and talk at the same time
because I have to stick my tongue out in order
to tap on my phone. So picture that visual. It's
really attractive.
Speaker 9 (04:31):
This is how it's growing people.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
One of the challenges of being an early adopter, a
pioneer of something new, which the Bubble Hour definitely was
one of the early podcasts in the recovery arena. At
least anyway, you kind of are part of the learning curve.
You're there before all the great technology comes along, before
the best practices. You kind of have to find your way.
We didn't have the skill set, we didn't have the
(04:56):
great technology that's there now, but we may do because
of that. There were a handful, a midful, a bucketful
of imperfect moments.
Speaker 9 (05:11):
Hello, yeah, any somehow, I'm curious, Ellie good out in
my hair?
Speaker 10 (05:30):
Are you there?
Speaker 1 (05:32):
Very sorry?
Speaker 9 (05:34):
But let me put everyone on hold somehow can you
hear me?
Speaker 6 (05:42):
Elly?
Speaker 4 (05:42):
Am?
Speaker 8 (05:43):
I am?
Speaker 9 (05:43):
I live?
Speaker 11 (05:44):
Yes?
Speaker 9 (05:45):
You get ahead?
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Okay, all right?
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Good, all right.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
So boundaries can be too rigid.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Or too loose, man, are there?
Speaker 7 (05:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
By momentary we're all here.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
That's good, that's good.
Speaker 10 (06:05):
Sorry, yes.
Speaker 9 (06:10):
These songs. I just took you off hold and put
you on hold. Hi, Catherine Himana, I just said I'm
so happy to be here.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
The first five or six seasons of this show were
recorded via phones to a website, and the recording was
what we used to call live to tape, which basically
means warts and all. It means whatever happens happens. You
get what you get, and you don't get upset. Eventually,
technology improved, but there's something kind of special and charming
(06:42):
about these old episodes because you are listening in on
a phone call among friends.
Speaker 6 (06:48):
Hello, this is Lisa. Welcome to the Bubble Hour, where
real people share stories of addiction and recovery. First of all,
a disclaimer, please be patient with Ellie and me tonight,
as we are hinting something new. We are going to
be taking calls from a few users, a few listeners
who have questions or tips about surviving and potentially enjoying
(07:11):
the holiday's sober style. Hopefully we'll be able to pull
this off without any major problems. But I can't make
any promises because we have no idea what we're doing
so just bear with us and hopefully we'll make it
as tameless as possible.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Lisa, Lisa, please.
Speaker 9 (07:41):
Car up.
Speaker 6 (07:42):
Hello, this is Carol. Hey, Carol, there.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
To that.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Sorry missus, Ellie, I've muted myself. Lisa still there, and
Carol are you still there?
Speaker 12 (08:06):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (08:06):
I apologize.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
I'm Here's the deal.
Speaker 4 (08:08):
This is why we wanted you guys to be patient.
I muted myself and I thought I had lost all
the callers.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Over the past year, I've been digging through these archives
to build the retrospective, and as I'm combing through them,
I'm pulling out this and that to share with you.
But I'm also doing a lot of clean up on
these old episodes. So what you're going to hear in
this episode will sound familiar to you if you're a
longtime listener of the show. But you know what else,
If you heard these old episodes with all their mistakes
(08:39):
and mishaps, you had an experience that's not going to
be quite the same going forward, because a lot of
this content is going to be permanently edited out of
these old archived shows, I think I'll try to leave
just enough in them to have some charm and some quirkiness,
but for the most part, these outtakes will find themselves
on the editation room floor of history.
Speaker 9 (09:03):
Hello. Hello, oh, I think we loved a couple of
people here. Okay, we have Lisa. Are you still on
the line.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Hello, Megan's here?
Speaker 9 (09:30):
Oh Megan?
Speaker 8 (09:32):
Hi?
Speaker 9 (09:33):
Okay, No, I'm dropping everyone on the call here. This
is very strange. I noticed there was something funny on
the line.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Let me just.
Speaker 9 (09:48):
Dial in one second. Boy, we haven't had this happen before.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
Devin.
Speaker 9 (10:00):
Let me. I'm just getting him back on the line
right now. Hello, Hi, Devin. I'm going to actually jump
off and get Ellie and Lisa back on the line.
So I would think Mandy had a question for you
is and I'm going to get her on the line. Okay, great,
(10:23):
hiy Hi.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
I guess I don't really have a question.
Speaker 9 (10:29):
I'm just kind of soaking the island.
Speaker 12 (10:36):
We'd Devin. Oh, can can you hear me?
Speaker 8 (10:43):
Mandy? Eighty one nine?
Speaker 12 (10:54):
O god, oh my god.
Speaker 5 (10:55):
Hello, We're leaving him message.
Speaker 12 (10:57):
Hello, I'm so funny.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
I had a lot of laughs building this episode because
going life to tape is unpredictable. It's precarious. Under the
best of circumstances and a live news team. You know,
those actual trained professionals who have things happened to them
on the air despite all of their skills and their
assistance and their equipment. So really, when you compare us
(11:29):
to that, you think it's kind of a miracle that
we made it to air week after week, year after year,
because truly, none of us had the technical training for this. Also,
the technology has improved so much since then, so now
everybody's an expert, and people are recording podcasts not by
making a phone call into a website on their phone,
(11:50):
but by having a actual recording studio in their phone.
So it's a pretty dramatic change. But let's talk about
that learning curve. One of the biggest issues was just
dealing with the dang voice robot that opened all the
early shows. She just had to always have the first word.
Speaker 9 (12:07):
Blow everybody in well, hi everybody, Hi, everybody, This is Amanda,
and welcome to the Bubble Hour.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
If interrupting us wasn't bad enough, sometimes that robot would
needlessly randomly repeat itself blop.
Speaker 12 (12:32):
Blop.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Hope.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
The good news is, with so many headaches and hiccups,
we became very comfortable with imperfection and we could laugh
and move on.
Speaker 9 (12:46):
Oh sorry, Catherine, technical difficulty there. You can go ahead
and start off the show.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
It's okay, I was waiting, Jean. Do you want to do?
You want to sing our little opening number here?
Speaker 9 (13:02):
But oh I connect play it?
Speaker 1 (13:14):

(14:22):
Bubble Hour, the perfect gift for yourself and friends. Coming
up with topics and content is a challenge for most
podcasts week after week. Some weeks were harder than others.
Speaker 9 (14:41):
Hi, everybody, This is Amanda and welcome to the Bubble Hour.
I'm here tonight with my co host Ellie and Lisa.
All three of us were so busy this week we
didn't have time to plan a show topic, so we
decided that balance would be a good thing to talk about.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Astleys and Amanda have mentioned it has not been a
great week for balance. This actually was pretty comical to
see the emails back and forth between all three of
us on Thursday, going oh no, oh, no oh no,
we have.
Speaker 9 (15:05):
A show.
Speaker 10 (15:09):
Unattainable goals for myself every day because that just leads
to frustration and well, anyway, I think I'm rambling on,
but I don't know. I'm probably not the person to
ask about balance.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (15:23):
Sorry, I know nothing about it.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
Okay, Well here's the irony. We're doing a show about balance,
and none of us are equipped to talk about episode,
at least not this week. Anyway. I could also go
on and on forever and ever, but I think that
this is basically a giant show of us having a
live rapy session, right, nervous breakdowns whatever, little mini nervous
(15:47):
breakdowns or big ones or whatever.
Speaker 10 (15:50):
Ellie, what about you?
Speaker 6 (15:51):
Wow?
Speaker 12 (15:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
I guess the disadvantage of going third is that I
could just sort of say ditto to everything, but.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
I won't.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
I won't, Okay, Usually I can find the singer for
you to say.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Podcasters that have multiple guests have to learn how to
deal with people talking over each other. And nowadays everybody's
recording occurs separately on their own devices, and it's very
easy to cut them out. But when you're all phoning
into one live to tape recording, it's always a problem
if everyone tries to talk at once. And that happened
(16:25):
a lot.
Speaker 10 (16:31):
One thing that I found.
Speaker 12 (16:34):
You it.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
You're right, it does take some time.
Speaker 5 (16:40):
Some of the.
Speaker 12 (16:42):
Variety.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Yeah, talk about that, Scott that.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
I agree. I think they're oh sorry, go right ahead.
Speaker 6 (16:53):
Here here we are.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
You and I always step on each other because we're
such a little catterboxes.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Eventually we developed some practices that definitely helped us enormously,
But the best tool of all is an editing suite.
We actually used to warn people before the show started
to remember that, you know we can hear you. It's
okay if you move around a little bit while you're
on the phone while you're recording this. It's okay to
get a drink of water if you need to, because
an hour can be quite a long time to record for.
(17:26):
But remember, do not flush a toilet that we can hear.
To my knowledge, that never happened on the show, although
a lot of other things did. A lot of kids
knocking on the doors, a lot of dogs barking, and background.
Speaker 4 (17:39):
Noises, And I want to add an unusual caveat tonight's show,
I'm sitting here next to my rescue dog Sammy, who
is extremely excitable and barking a lot tonight. So if
for some reason there's a barking that erupts in the background,
I just apologize in advance. He's not listening to me
when I tell him to be quiet. Did an advance
(18:00):
of that happens.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Not all of the interruptions and surprises were unwelcome. One
of my favorite moments happened in season three, episode forty
when our guest, Scott, had an unexpected visitor during the recording.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
We're also joined tonight by Scott, a sober musician who
never fails to make us laugh here in the Bubble Hour. Hello,
Bubble Hour, I Scott.
Speaker 12 (18:28):
I don't hear the audience. I don't hear the closing.
I'm sorry someone just I did invite someone to hear
because I had a sore throw. I wasn't sure if
I was gonna be able to talk the whole time.
But he's also a recovering at CLOWNO. Would you you
want to say hello, clowner has been He stopped around
(18:50):
the same time I did. And actually clown O who
thought that he could have trouble performing this in front
of young kid's birthdays and clown Oh himself, I know,
used to do clown jobs while he was still drinking
and would probably have a couple drinks to get him
up there. He was very afraid that he wouldn't be
(19:10):
funny without it. But again, the subtlety is in the moments,
and that's much more easily caught when you're not in
that haze of satisfaction.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
So his career has really taken off, and I can
just imagine.
Speaker 12 (19:26):
Had your career. Yes, he's shaking him.
Speaker 8 (19:32):
He sounds very happy.
Speaker 12 (19:33):
Yeah, he is much happier now that he used to have.
More like a rap but now it's.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
Of course, that particular episode started out with technical troubles
of its own, as we've scrambled trying trying trying to
get the fabulous lot of Dan on the line from
New Zealand.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
I'm Catherine and I'm here tonight with my lovely co
host Gene Hi Jen Hi.
Speaker 8 (20:02):
Catherine.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
See, they're working on the board here, so I don't
know if you've had luck with some of our technical
difficulties tonight.
Speaker 8 (20:09):
We'll find out in a moment. Okay, great.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
We are joined hopefully by two of the most fun
people we know, both Bubble our veterans. But that is
where some of our technical difficulty is coming in. We
are trying to get Lota Dan on the line. She's
in from New Zealand, so where we have a truly
international podcast tonight with representatives from the United States, Canada
(20:34):
and New Zealand, so a lot of were we able
to get you.
Speaker 9 (20:38):
I'm here?
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Can you hear me?
Speaker 2 (20:40):
Oh my god, yay girl, Jean, I'm going to tell you, Jean,
you you are even more magic on the on the
old studio blog talk on air Studio.
Speaker 8 (20:56):
I take no credit. A lot of achieved this all
by herself. She got herself onto the show all by herself,
all the way from across the globe.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
So this is it's a bubble hour miracle, folks.
Speaker 1 (21:09):
Occasionally the problem was with the connection, a bad line.
Back then, nobody was used to this, so you know
a few people really had external mics and speakers like
we have now, didn't have all the integrated equipment that
we have now. This's really improved over time. There's all
kinds of weird background noises and interference and barking dogs,
my mom calling. But probably the biggest problem was when
(21:32):
a call would drop. So in season five, I was
interviewing guest Megan Peters, who lost her cell connection mid interview.
Speaker 10 (21:42):
That's not about me, that's about their own triggers.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
That's about their own.
Speaker 7 (21:47):
M hmmm.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Oh shoot, Megan's call has just dropped because she's got
kind of a rotten connection. Right now, I'm just going
to try and bring her on on the phone. Let's
see if this will work, because we're having a the
number you were calling is temporarily unavailable. Oh well that's
not going to work. Let's see if she can get
back to us here.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
The number you are calling is temporarily no But she.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Was able to get a text to me and say
just hang on the line. It hopped in her car.
She was headed for higher ground while I just sat breathing.
Apparently I turned my microphone so that it was pointed
right up my nose and all you could hear was
me breathing for twenty minutes. And yeah, that's right, I said, microphone.
(22:36):
Because by season five I was recording alone as a
solo host, so I had no one to back me
up or fill air when things like this happened. But
I did have better equipment by then, because I was
able to use a microphone at this point rather than
just simply a phone the way the guests did, so
things were starting to improve. Nevertheless, I wasn't savvy enough
(22:57):
to turn my microphone off. Later I would edit that out. Hey, Megan,
ry back, I'm back.
Speaker 7 (23:09):
Sorry about that.
Speaker 1 (23:13):
Oh that's great, I'm glad you made it.
Speaker 8 (23:15):
I don't know what you just had to do to
get back on the line.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
A little bit of back driving, but we're here.
Speaker 9 (23:21):
I'm ready to go.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
I'm it's all about like taking things as they are
and moving along exactly. I could actually see my skills
improving as I worked through these back episodes, because I
was pretty rattled in some earlier episodes when things went wrong.
(23:43):
I was pretty calm during Megan Peters and then by
the time in season six, Arlena Allen One Day at
a Time chat podcast was on the show and she
completely dropped the line and I just continued talking to
the listeners until she came back on. Arlena there, I
think I lost you, So you're gonna have to call
back in going to rejoin us. But interesting, just as
(24:06):
Arlena is dialing back in, I think what we just
heard her talk about with all these different parts of herself,
and that's really quite interesting because we do that, you know,
my therapist just had me do an exercise recently itself.
But you can invite all of those parts to be
present and say, you know, with them, without letting them
(24:27):
take over ourselves. So I'm just waiting for Arlena to
come back online here. I think we have her back. Hey, Arlena,
you're Back's funny because we were talking about snafoos is recording,
and now we'll have a real live one for our
listeners to hear. It's character revealing how we conduct ourselves
(24:50):
in the middle of a trying moment. Life isn't about
being perfect. It's what you do with the mistakes and
how you handle them. I gotta tell you that sometimes
the bubble hour give me heart palpitations. We're gonna call
Kirsten right now. I'm just putting her phone number in
and we'll get her back on the line and we're
going to start our show over again. So you're getting
(25:12):
to hear the second attempt at this here. How calm
I am. You should be impressed. Hi Tene, Hi Kirsten.
So sorry about all the confusion. Oh my gosh. No,
(25:35):
We're more than capable of dealing with these things. But
I'm not gonna lie. It does give me a few
gray hairs every time it happens. The truth is, I
learned from the best. Amanda is an absolute angel, technical wizard.
All I had to do was remember back to some
of our more trying moments and what a great attitude
(25:56):
she had, and she took everything in stride.
Speaker 8 (25:59):
I want to all we say thank you to Amanda.
We didn't hear her at all on the show tonight.
That's because she's the wizard behind the curtain that was
dealing with all these crazy technical issues we were having.
So Amanda, just sending you love and gratitude for getting
us on the air and making sure that this discussion happened.
It's been really, really great and we're really thankful for you.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Thank you.
Speaker 9 (26:21):
It's a great show, ladies.
Speaker 5 (26:22):
So sorry.
Speaker 9 (26:23):
At the beginning there was at I had a missed dial,
and then during the show it was good timing. I
wasn't on. My heats not on, so I'm scrambling in
the background trying to fix that and it's not working.
Speaker 8 (26:34):
Oh my gosh. Well, you have all kinds of things
going on.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
Amanda could not only run the switchboard but fix her
furnace at the same time. In fact, not only could
Amanda take everything in stride, but you reminded us to
see it as a positive.
Speaker 9 (26:49):
I love that we laugh, and I love when we
have goof ups because it's just it's it's just we're real.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
You know.
Speaker 9 (26:56):
Sometimes those technical things it's totally stressful at the moment
and I want to rip my hair out. Last week
was it last week when I had no internet and
my phone was done? You know, it's like, oh my god, really,
and then you know, then we get everything settled down
and we do the show and you feel better after
the show is over. So you know, we have our
(27:18):
share of hiccups, you know. But I think that also
lets people know that we're just real people, and I
think that's cool.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
These moments, these headaches, they were a continual reminder to
us that we could handle anything sober, and hopefully we
demonstrated to you the same thing and you can laugh
about it and life goes on. Hi everyone, and welcome
to the Bubble Hour, where real people tell real stories
of addiction and recovery.
Speaker 9 (27:48):
Hi, everybody, Welcome to the Bubble Hour. This is Amanda.
We had a little technical start up here. I guess
the show from last week decided to play now. It
wouldn't be just.
Speaker 6 (27:58):
To be with all the technical difficulty.
Speaker 2 (28:05):
We're literally watching the clocks countdown and we're trying to
get Lada on the line. And like the old me,
when I was still drinking, I would have been apoplectic
with like, what if we can't get her, then this
is going to go Not as planned and I would
have freaked out. And this time I was like trying
(28:27):
to just stay cool. It'll work out one way or
the other, and it exceeded my expectations. We thank all
of you for listening to the Bubble Hour and hope
you all have a great evening. Thanks everybody.
Speaker 8 (28:43):
Good night and night everyone.
Speaker 5 (28:45):
Hi a diffend, not proud, but that was me and
when I face take a little dignity. Not looking for excuses.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
I just want to be free from the power weakness
head on me in a dun corners where shame lies
to heaven.
Speaker 11 (29:30):
Wait with a guess job just because you'll keep it upside.
Speaker 5 (29:36):
It just staves and wait there to rob.
Speaker 9 (29:39):
You off your pride.
Speaker 12 (29:40):
Turn the light on.
Speaker 11 (29:41):
Turn the light on, you can shine away.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
You see a diffend, not proud, but that was me
and my face. If I take back a little dignity,
an a lot of excuses, I just want to we
breathe from power.
Speaker 7 (30:02):
Oh your smell.
Speaker 11 (30:09):
You don't have to shout it out on main street.
You don't need to whisper to confessions and fears. The
person you should talk to is lookin at.
Speaker 7 (30:26):
You in there and on matters moles can always you
where you see open.
Speaker 5 (30:34):
