Speaker 3 (00:47):
Not looking for excuses.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
I just want to be free from the power. We
us head on to be free, free, free, free free.
I'm Geen McCarthy and you're listening to the Bubble Hour. Hi,
and welcome to episode nine out of ten. Well, this

(01:11):
one feels a little awkward. I wanted to give the
listeners a chance to say thank you to the Bubble Hour.
The beauty of this show isn't me, It isn't any
of us hosts. The beauty of this show is in
the conversation between hosts and guests and listeners. So when
we hear gratitude and positive feedback, it's not ego building

(01:33):
and it's not self aggrandizing to share it because it
belongs to all of us. This podcast has been a
group effort, and it wouldn't matter how many episodes anyone
recorded if there weren't listeners to listen to them. What
I think is so special and magical about the show
is that so many of our guests are people who
got sober by using this podcast as a tool and

(01:55):
came back to tell their story, to share it full circle.
As weird as it seems to have an episode where
people just say nice things about The Bubble Hour, obviously
that makes my heart want to do backflips. But there's
a part of me that feels that I should be humble,
and yet at the same time, I know that it's
not about me, it's about you. It's about us and

(02:15):
the magic that we created together. Let's start with some
voices from throughout the years, guests sharing how much the
show has meant to them and why they're here to
share their stories.

Speaker 6 (02:32):
For me, listening to the Bubble Hour was helpful because
I could I could hear the voices and I could
relate because I had a lot of shame.

Speaker 7 (02:41):
So it was just like this horrifying secret I had.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Well, my name is Pat and m I'm from Ireland
and I love your show and obviously I put it
down to one of the tills that I have that's
really helped me achieve that your sober.

Speaker 8 (03:08):
Thank you so much for doing this, because this Bubble
Hour helped me tremendously when I was quitting drinking. Every
time I go for a walk, I think I have
the Bubble Hour on and I think you're just doing
a great jot.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Just love it.

Speaker 7 (03:32):
To know that I can like listen to some old
episodes of Bubble Hour and I kind of know them
very quite well now, so I know which one that
I need to hear.

Speaker 9 (03:40):
You know.

Speaker 7 (03:41):
That's just all I need really, And I am quite
alone in the like where I live, like there's no
one like me that are solbers, so to say you
can end up feeling quite alone. The online to media
has helped me tremendously, and obviously, of course Bubble Hour
my my saving grace.

Speaker 6 (04:09):
We are big fans down number the recovery community. I
share a link to your podcast every week on our website,
Living Sober, and everyone listens to you here in the
land of the Long White Cloud, which is what we
call New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
So it's great to be on the line with you guys.

Speaker 10 (04:38):
Everybody talked about ninety meetings and ninety days, and I'm like,
I'm not going into any meetings because I'm not leaving
my house because I'm a bit of a hermit. So
I was like, well, I know that's not going to happen.
So I thought, well, what I can do. John mentions
this thing called the Bubble Hour. I'm a real podcast person.
I'll listen to ninety of those in ninety dight, and
I just thought, I'm going to listen to one of

(04:59):
these every day until I no longer feel the need
to drink. And so I would listen to the Bubble
Hour in the morning and then in the evening I
would listen on my commute, and it saved me. Having
somebody talking me through my drive, allowed me to drive
past those places where I stopped in the past and
bought stuff to drink. I just saw my life become

(05:21):
something else, and now it's easy. All those years that
I was looking for a life pack. It turns out
that sobriety was it. The way that my life can
become easier is by not complicating it with alcohol.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
I put out an open invitation on social media that
anyone who wanted to send a message of farewell and
thanks to the show and to the guests and to
fellow listeners to send it on in. And here they
are from around the world.

Speaker 10 (06:00):
Hi there.

Speaker 11 (06:01):
My name is Cathy Weeks and I've been sober since
January twenty sixth of twenty twenty. I started listening to
podcasts and I binged listening to your podcasts. It really
helped me through my first six months of sobriety. It
just helped me to realize that I was not alone
in this journey, and there were so many.

Speaker 10 (06:20):
Stories that were relatable to me.

Speaker 11 (06:22):
I am looking forward to listening to your last season.
I am sorry to see you go, though, Thank you.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
It was kis met finding your podcast soon after I
quit drinking four years ago. On the fourth of July.
I listened to your com voice every day and knew
that I would overcome my struggle with alcohol. It was
further evidence of divine intervention when I learned that you
were going to be leading a she recovered group at

(07:00):
Carpalu in November of twenty eighteen. With your guidance, we
formed a powerful bond which continues today. I owe my life,
my sobriety, and my relationship with a wonderful man to you.
You are such a bright light, my dear, and I'm
wishing you all the best in your next chapter.

Speaker 9 (07:29):
My name is Nancy, and I just want to say
how much the Bubble Hour has meant to me over
the years. Even in the days before I could talk
out loud about my own drinking and my worries about that,
hearing other women talk about it and sometimes men, helped

(07:52):
me to feel that it was okay to say it
out loud, that there was something really wonderful about being
vulnerable and being open and honest, and that none of
us is alone. That if we can talk to each other,
it takes away some of the power of addiction, and

(08:13):
I'm really grateful for that. I loved being a guest
on the Bubble Hour myself. When Gene asked me to
come on and read a poem I had written about
always saying I'm sorry, and that meant a lot to
me too, just to feel that my voice was something
that other people might want to hear. A pretty remarkable experience, actually,

(08:39):
and I think that's one of the greatest things that
the Bubble Hour does, is to honor our voices.

Speaker 11 (08:46):
So thank you.

Speaker 12 (09:01):
I just want to say how much I have loved
listening to the Bubble Hour. It has been such a
joy to feel connected to other people in recovery, and
what an incredibly wonderful experience to actually be interviewed on
your show. Our number laughing when you said that you
have the trifecta making me cry three times. But what

(09:25):
that says to me is just that open hearted, wonderful
approach that you've had throughout the years. I will sorely
miss the Bubble Hour, but look forward to staying connected.

Speaker 13 (09:48):
Hi, this is Suzanne. I came across your podcast back
in the beginning of my sobriety, which was about six
and a half years ago, and at that point I
didn't I had no plan as far as staying sober.
I was just doing it out of curiosity because I
didn't really think I had like a rock bottom or

(10:10):
a major problem. But I started listening to your podcast
because it was recommended in one of the chats I
was in chatrooms dozen and there were a couple of
episodes where I remember when I heard the person's story
and how she went from being fully functioning and so
on to all of a sudden just having a huge

(10:31):
downturn in her health, and that scared the crap out
of me. And then from that I listened to one
of your episodes with a medical professional and same thing.
He described the quick spiral downward that can happen quite
suddenly when one is drinking frequently. At that moment, I
decided I'm done. This is not a short term break

(10:53):
for me. I'm done. So thank you so much Bubble
Hour Hosts for the work that you have done, and
you have been a major part of my ongoing sobriety
and I share your episodes. I share your podcast with
people that I work with. I'm a recovery coach and
soon to be a therapist, and so I cannot thank

(11:14):
you and all of your guests enough.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
Hi Gene, my name is Drisilla from England. You impacted
my recovery by giving me hours and hours of reinforcing
listening from a huge variety of people and with no
particular ideology or a gender behind it, and you was
such a distinctive interviewer, very very tactful, forbearing really interesting

(11:58):
listening to people. I don't really need sobriety podcasts anymore
because I can't even remember very much about my recovery
four and a half years now, but you were really pivotal.
Thank you so much. Other people have come along to
replace you, but they they con't because you're the original.
And thanks to the other girls too.

Speaker 14 (12:33):
Not trying to be too dramatic, but I think had
I not been introduced to the Bubble Hour in twenty sixteen,
I very well could have died an alcoholic death by now.
When my wellness coach introduced me to the Bubble Hour,
I started listening and immediately I would listen to four
or five, six, up to ten episodes a day just

(12:55):
to help me stay off the bottle. Then, over the
years I gained so much much wisdom, strength and connection
through the women that I heard interviewed on the Bubble Hour.
I just can't say enough. I really believe that the
Bubble Hour saved my life.
