His debut novel, The Bystander, is a contemporary mystery, infused with thriller elements. It follows television reporter Pete Lemaster, who witnesses an active shooter incident. During the attack, the gunman is killed by an armed bystander. Lemaster captures the event on camera, and the footage propels his career into the spotlight after going viral. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are far more complicated than they first appeared. While the novel touches on issues of gun rights and veterans’ challenges, David emphasizes that it is primarily an entertaining tale of suspense.
