Speaker 3 (01:59):
Thank you very much. Well.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
How does it feel that we're now in the home stretch?
You know, normally the media runs the last part of
the of the puzzle before the premiere, and this is
about to get released into the world. What are the feelings?
Are we anxious? Are we excited?

Speaker 3 (02:14):
What are we feeling? We are so many things. It's
just extraordinary. Yeah, there is a certain degree of anxiousness,
but it's not unpleasant. It's very exciting. It's sort of
having to pinch myself every day to say this is
actually happening. This film is going to be seen. It's

(02:37):
out there. The posters gorgeous, you know, the trailer is brilliant.
My my, my, my, my crew, my staff, my my my, my,
my cast are amazing. It's all just it's kind of unfathomable, really.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Well, starting really from the screenplay itself, going all the
way through that process and then directing it. Was the
idea when you wrote the screenplay, Was it always to
direct it or were you just writing it and saying,
you know, maybe this is something could get made.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
No, I've always wanted to direct it. I wanted to
write something that I would direct myself. I didn't want
to act in it. I wanted somebody else to act
in it. But for reasons I'm really can't really understand why.
But anyway, they wanted me, so that was that, and
I felt I knew the roles I could do that.
But anyway, yes, I know, I've always wanted to direct this.

(03:32):
I wanted to find a I wanted to direct for
a while and I'd wanted to find a project that
I really knew inside out, a subject that I knew
inside out, and so obviously talking about childhood, loss and
grieving is something that I know intimately, and so I
was able to We were able to write something based

(03:53):
around my memories of child my childhood, memories of my
far and learning about my stepfather's death when he goes missing,
and of course the question, you know, the changing the
name business. And yeah, so I knew about all those
things very very well because I've been asked to other films,

(04:15):
but they tended to be you know, period pieces, and
I felt I can't really bite off that's just too much.
I need my first film. I want to make it
something that I really know well.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
And so when you pin the draft of the screenplay
and then you finally get to shooting, you know, they
say that writers make the worst editors, but directors have
to cut things and they have to make sure the
story works well and is you know, keeping everyone's attention
and its well paced. Did you have to cut things
out on shooting or in the edit that you were like, man,

(04:48):
that's such a great scene, but we just can't make
it work.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, we had to do that a bit. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
is that difficult. It's so difficult. It's agony. It's like
shopping off your leg. It's no, it's really really hard.
But in the end, you know, it's all for to
make it all more coherent and trott along nicely and
all that kind of thing. So yeah, there are bits,

(05:11):
and I think that was that was the steepest learning
curve for me, was in the edit, because that's, you know,
being on a film set. I love being on a
film set. It's the second nature to me. And directing
actors was really really fun and great and fascinating. But

(05:32):
I really really enjoyed it. Where the hard work happens
is in the edit, and I didn't know much about that.
I know a lot more now, and I certainly found
that really really fascinating.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
So let me ask you this. When you know this
project so intimately and you're sitting there directing the actors,
I'm sure actors always come up as well. Within on
any film set, they have some suggestions, ideas for their
characters and so on and so forth. Are you more
accepting of those having been on that side of the camera,
or being that you were so personal to the story.
You're like, I hear you, but this is how I

(06:06):
need it.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
No, actually I was quite Oh yeah, that's a good idea.
That's much better than my idea. I was quite open
to that. No, I found that quite. I mean, there
were specifics that we needed to get right so we
could move to the next point, obviously in the story.
But no, I was completely open to all these suggestions.

(06:28):
And I think that probably does come from the fact
that I am an actor and I kind of trust
other actors.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Well, you did a phenomenal job in all realms of
this movie. Congratulations on it. I'm so thankful to have
spent a little bit of time with you.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
Thank you very much.
