While Colombia is much better known worldwide for its emeralds, gold production here is also quite significant. In fact, according to some reports, in recent years revenues from illegal gold mining in Colombia have far exceeded those of the cocaine trade. Add in the environmental destruction and health hazards for the wider public associated with the practice and it's little wonder that programmes have been put in place in attempts to clean up the industry.
One of those is the Swiss-led Better Gold Initiative. Christian Brändli, Head of Economic Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Colombia, tells us what it's all about.
