Thank you. Music.
(01:13):
Welcome to the Delvin Cox Experience, the podcast which
each week I'm on a one man mission to you, not a coach to
the verse. I'm your host, Delvin Cox.
I probably shouldn't be yelling like that because my voice is
gone, but I'm here because I have an amazing guest with me,
someone who has played Batman, Nightwing, Nightwing again,
(01:37):
Nightwing 1/3 time. My man has played a multitude of
candidates. He's an amazing voice actor and
the first time I heard him on the water verse, I was like, I
got to have him on this pod and then I got sick and I'm like, I
got to wait to have him on this pod.
Then I got better. I'm like, he has to be on this
pod. So join the experience for the
(01:58):
first time. Carom Erdic, right?
Close enough. It's our ditch.
There's a silent see with the sedil at the end there.
This man has a dope ass name, I love it.
I appreciate it. How How are you today doing a
little better A. Little better, a little better.
(02:19):
Not too bad overall. I'm getting there, I'm getting
there. I'm triggering this weird Mullen
tea which it's probably not doing anything but.
Oh tea is magic for me. Whenever I'm feeling sick I
always just brew like a chamomile tea or something.
Get just that. Vapor, even in through your
nostrils helps. Yeah, they told me to get this
(02:39):
tea from Amazon. I said I'll try it, so we'll see
if it doesn't work if I die nextweek.
It was the tea. Nonsense.
You, you. You got way more to do.
You got more voices to do so yougot to get better.
Correct as always, like to startthe podcast off at the 555
questions. 5 minutes to get the wrong ball rolling.
(03:01):
Karen, Are you ready? I'm ready.
Let's do it. Question #1 all the cereal
mascots have a big brawl. Who you got with it?
Oh wow, that's a great question.I'm going to go with an answer
that I didn't think of because I've actually thought of this
(03:24):
question before. Just where my mind goes.
That's good. The honeycomb monster, I think
just from like a sheer property damage perspective, the one that
goes like we want honeycomb, like he just goes crazy.
That's. A good one.
He can get the jump on a lot of them.
Because he's. Crazy even though like Tony the
Tiger has like that build and brute strength maybe, but he
(03:48):
might be caught off guard by this like little lunatic thing
that just goes into a tornado like a Tasmanian devil.
That's a good point. This little lunatic maybe meth
attic serial mascot. Who do you got in the brawl?
I don't know, it's a good question.
(04:09):
If no powers are involved, I think Sugar Crisp maybe the
bear. Oh, OK, that's a that's a deep
cut pool. That's not like a cuckoo for
Cocoa Puffs or toucan sand. That's a deep cut and.
Yeah, big old brolic bear. If Power's involved, I got to
(04:35):
say the Lucky Charms guy. Oh yeah, magic.
Yeah, magic. That's like some Mixel Piddlich
energy, you know? And exactly, yeah.
Exactly. I like All Right question #2
what TV or movie project coming out this year that you're most
(04:58):
excited for? Oh, let me think on that,
because there's quite a few things, but oh, it just came
out. So I I love this movie with a
passion, so I want to talk aboutit and you.
Said. For it sinners, have you seen
sinners yet? Oh, you, you.
Yes, I did. I loved it.
(05:21):
I loved it. I saw it twice.
It is. It reminded me why I love
movies. I love movies like.
That I agree. It's fantastic.
If you haven't seen it, I highlyrecommend everybody watch this
movie. It's probably the best movie
you're going to see this year. Hands down, and in IMAX too.
(05:42):
I saw it in Adobe, whatever thatthing is called.
Looks great. That's AM CS IMAX thing.
I was fortunate enough to not even catch the trailer.
I went in completely blind. It that's rare for me,
especially for what movies that I like to go see.
I usually check out the trailer first but just somehow I avoided
(06:03):
it. And I, I did the same thing
blind. I did the same thing.
All I knew was Michael B Jordan did it with twins and he's
twins. It's all I knew.
And the cool part was that at times his acting was so
different between Stack and smoke.
I questioned myself. Ramona, is that really Michael B
Jordan? Yeah, twin.
(06:24):
I knew it in my mind, 'cause I know from the poster we're
walking in, like, yeah, he's playing the two twins, but his
acting was so different. I second guess myself when I was
watching. The movie, I love how they
distinguish both of them in sucha unique way and getting their
own personalities and kind of you got to build on the story
really. I loved it.
And the music too. I I love the Blues so that being
(06:49):
put into it and set to such a degree was a real treat for me.
What a amazing I don't want to spoil that part.
There's an amazing scene in thismovie that's a must see.
You'll know what it is. Everyone watching that hasn't
seen it. You'll know exactly what we're
talking about the moment you seeit.
You can't miss it. All right, question 3.
(07:13):
Give me 3 characters you would love to play.
Oh, OK. All right, so I always got to go
first Nightwing always and forever, of course, like to any
sort of official capacity once more.
I've had the chance with Batman and Joker to like a semi
(07:37):
official capacity with Death Battle back when they were owned
by WB. But I have an idea for Nightwing
that I'm keeping close to my chest for when that moment
finally comes to do something that's different and what I feel
is like a next evolution of where I think the character
(07:58):
should go. So he's always at the top of my
list, the everyone who knows me.He's my crown jewel that I
pursue in voice acting. Did you ever read the Grayson
comics? I did, I did.
I've read every single Nightwingcomic.
I'm pretty current at this point.
I like those a lot. Those were fun.
(08:19):
There is a lot of really cool single issue stories in that
run. Of times bond, Ethan Hunt kind
of feel. Yeah, like there is the one, my
favorite one, I think from that run was the one where he saved
the baby from a plane crash and he gets stranded in the desert.
That was awesome. The whole issue, he's just
(08:42):
trying to survive with this child in the desert.
I'm like, that's so different for ADC.
Superhero story and art was Gorgeous by Mikkel Yanen.
Wonderful stuff. I like it, but you gave me one,
give me two more. All right, this one is my wild
card that I really want to do. I want to play a Scooby-doo
(09:04):
monster. That's a great answer.
Any sort of animated Scooby-doo,they look like they have so much
fun playing those characters, especially in like the classic
Scooby-doo. Like there was the Gator ghoul,
the tar monster Jaguar, like those more ridiculous monsters
(09:24):
that weren't like the overtly scary ones.
They had all the weird sounds and they're always like some
real estate developer in the mask.
It's I think that would be a really fun unique voice over
get. So that's my #2.
That's a great one. Thank you #3 let's see #3 I'm
(09:54):
going to go with a type of animal, OK?
I think it would be really fun to play a parrot for a pirate.
That's a good idea. Because you can do anything like
you don't have to go in the traditional route where you're
going like like that's the captain speaking like that kind
(10:17):
of thing. You don't need to go there.
You can do something completely different and just like
completely mimic the other actor's voice or something like
that where you sound exactly like the captain.
Whoever's playing that actor. It would be a fun back and forth
you can do or something that's. A really good idea I like.
Besides Nightwing, I try not to say like particular characters
because I feel like when you trytoo hard to go in One Direction
(10:43):
for like a role that you're aspiring for or something like
that, it sometimes goes another direction.
So I sort of just like leave it to the universe.
And that actually happened for something I can't talk about yet
where it's one of my favorite characters of all time in a
certain property. And it just happened and I had
no clue how or what transpired to make that come to me, but I
(11:07):
just left it to the universe andit transpired and all.
I'll talk about it soon, but. That's awesome.
Not just yet, that is awesome. All right question #4 what is
your go to snack? Go to snack.
OK I'll give my ethnic Turkish answer and then like the junk
(11:34):
food. Fun answer as well.
Both work work well. So for Turkish food, it's not
necessarily a snack, but it's sort of like a ravioli, but a
Turkish style ravioli where it'sfill a dough filled with ground
meat like ground beef or lamb, but usually it's ground beef and
(11:58):
you drizzle a sauce over it, butyou boil it first, but then you
put it into the oven and it becomes like a crunchy pasta.
That sounds good. Yeah, it's called chitramanta,
which means the main pasta is called manta MANTI.
But Chitzer means like crunchy in Turkish, so it's called like
(12:18):
crunchy ravioli. It's delicious.
That sounds really good actually.
Highly recommended it if you ever come across it in any
Turkish or Mediterranean restaurants.
It's hard to find in the States a lot of the time because
there's a lot of prep with it, but if you find it, it's great.
And the go to snack that I always just in front of the TV,
(12:42):
kick back and relax with his chips and salsa.
That's my jam. That's.
A good one. Let me ask you this, are there
any like big name brand Turkish restaurants out there?
There are in my neck of the woods.
I am in the Orange County area in California.
There's a lot of Mediterranean restaurants.
(13:02):
There's some family owned Turkish restaurants, just name a
few like Istanbul Grill, Gigi's Cafe Bistro, Donaire Corner in
Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. Check them out if you're in the
LA area. Other voice actors here in this
area, you won't be disappointed but it depends.
(13:24):
It's harder to find in other states, but it's becoming more
and more popular, like Donaire has become more popularized.
Seem like a good type of restaurant open eye because you
don't see it everywhere. Yeah, it's a lot of the time
when they say Mediterranean, it either means like Greek or
Persian. Correct.
(13:46):
Turkey. Sometimes it just depends on who
is establishing the restaurant. Like in Florida three you see
Mediterranean, it's 90% of the time Greek.
Yep, they do their thing and Turkey does theirs.
I I have my preferences but. Very unique.
(14:08):
Do you like Greek too? Yeah, alright, question #5
Zombie apocalypse happens, Walking Dead style.
You're going to take 5 things tosurvive.
Anything you want to go out of the world.
What are you taking with? You OK Question.
(14:29):
Can this item not necessarily exist?
Can I make it up? Yes.
OK then one thing I would take to avoid zombie bites would be a
mythical vibranium slash adamantium weave suit.
(14:51):
I like that. Covers my whole body so I don't
get bitten. Because that's always the
classic thing where somehow you're just minding your own
business and all of a sudden, Wham, a zombie comes out from a
shipping container and bites you.
Yep, during that zombie happens to be all the time.
I trust my reflexes but not enough to think, OK, I can last
(15:13):
for another 30 years without getting bitten by someone so
that would be one thing. That's for defense.
So for offense I would choose. OK, something that doesn't
(15:33):
require. There'd definitely be a firearm
of some kind. So I guess it would be some type
of automatic weapon with a lot of kickback to it, because I
want to hit as many zombies as Ican and send them reeling
backwards so I can have a chanceto run.
Because I probably can't kill him.
I wouldn't want to waste my timekilling him anyway, because then
(15:54):
they could just swarm you and overwhelm me.
That's the always the thing. They always spend too much time
killing the zombies and then they just hoard you and get you.
Yeah, especially if you're like, just preoccupied with murdering
them and eventually they're going to overcome you.
And the more noise you make, theworse it gets.
So if you have a big loud gun, you got a good idea.
(16:18):
Yes. Then I guess the next thing I
would take is a very, very largeboat.
OK. And the reason why is because a
boat is the only form of transportation I feel that is
the safest to use in a zombie apocalypse.
(16:40):
Because zombies can't swim, at least.
Yes, that's correct. In this case, I would think it's
more likely than not they would just sort of, even if they can
survive and adapt in water, theywould just be floating around
and getting caught in coral and things like that.
So they're not going to follow me in the boat.
And the boat, given where I am, I would imagine if the zombie
(17:01):
apocalypse breaks out, I would be in California.
I can go to the smaller islands and sort of set up camp that way
with the boat. Which brings me to #4 which is a
lab kit supply to grow food. OK.
That's great. Where I can grow vegetables, I
(17:22):
can grow lab grow meat or something like that.
Some kind of scientific widget thingamajig that can grow food.
And if I can't go that far, sometypes of seeds so I can grow my
own vegetables, crops, that kindof thing.
Some soil that I can plant, keeping myself alive.
(17:44):
Is all good answers so far. One more.
One more OK the final thing I would bring is The Elder Scrolls
for Oblivion Remastered with my PC coupled together.
I like it. It is it.
Is an offline game. I have spent 10s of thousands of
(18:04):
hours in the original. I love it to death.
I loved hunting down even I found all the spell tones.
I was crazy because that's a random drop thing in Elder
Scrolls. I spent my save files for each
Elder Scrolls game more than 800hours minimum.
So even if everyone said. I've never played Oblivion, I
(18:26):
have played Sky. Now is the time to get it.
This is my first hot take of thepodcast Oblivion Better than
Skyrim. Oh, interesting.
Skyrim's the one that everybody played, but it is a downgrade
from Oblivion in terms of its, how do I put this?
(18:47):
It's gameplay mechanics. You can have a sword, a shield
and a spell at once in Oblivion. You can't do that in Skyrim.
Skyrim you have to have one handdevoted to a spell, one hand
devoted to a weapon or shield. That's correct.
Spells in Oblivion you can activate the spell in the hand
that you're holding your sword in.
So you can do all these fun little spell sword fight tactics
(19:11):
in Oblivion you couldn't do in Skyrim.
The only thing that held back Oblivion was its leveling
system. It's leveling system was a pain
in the butt. It almost kills the entire
momentum of the gang when you jump into it.
But Oblivion, now with the remaster, has reworked the
leveling system. To I was going to ask elements.
(19:32):
Yeah, they added new animations. They added staggering to your
enemies when you're hitting themwith the sword, because those
Elder Scrolls games are notorious for their combat being
less than desirable to some people.
I enjoy it, but Oblivion originally were just like
hacking and slashing your swords.
(19:53):
Nobody was getting staggered. Yeah.
It was an aged game, it was an age, a game of its time.
So I would bring the remaster with me.
Even if everyone's dead, I'd be good with that game.
OK, so the remastered that good. They did a really good job with
it so far. Oh yes, they even kept a line of
(20:16):
dialogue from an MPC character. You can look this up on Twitter.
It's all over the place right now where the MPC says it's lime
and then the actor jumps in saying hold on, let me do that
again and. Then repeats the.
Lime. They kept it because it's.
That's amazing. Iconic Easter egg from the
original game. They never patched it.
(20:38):
They kept all the bugs, they kept all of the fun glitches.
It's. That's actually really cool.
I'm back in 2006 all over again this week.
That's awesome. So let me ask you, what got you
into voice acting? What got me into voice acting?
(21:00):
It started as a hobby. Originally, I created a YouTube
channel where I just tackled favorite voices, characters,
properties that I enjoyed and made videos for my audience on
YouTube. It was a humble small channel
(21:20):
where I just would upload voiceovers, monologues.
The ones that really took off for me were the Dark Souls ones,
where I would take some of the bosses from those Dark Souls
games and give them lines, give them a tragic back story, go
into the lore a little bit and make it my own.
(21:41):
Giving some characters like Dragons that never had voices,
voices, and reinterpreting the lore a little bit in my own way.
People are really excited for those.
That's awesome. Thank you.
It was fun. And from there then I got more
and more into just working on the craft.
(22:02):
I didn't get into auditioning and getting an agent,
interacting with the voice over community for a long time.
It was several years, I think atleast four years.
I sort of just kept to myself and my own little space, which
looking back, even though I could have gotten started in
professional circuits earlier, Ifelt it was a great place to
(22:26):
hone my skills to the point where I entered into the
professionals place when I was ready.
OK, that makes sense. Yeah, when I felt I was ready to
take on my distinguished competition among many of the
(22:47):
other talented voice actors thatwe work alongside and getting to
a point where I felt I was readyto take on the expectation that
working in one of the main hubs Los Angeles requires.
Building that confidence, really.
Building that confidence and just building my repertoire too.
(23:09):
I am a, what I like to call a chameleon voice actor where a
lot of the time the voice that comes out in the games or
animations that I work on doesn't sound like me at all.
I change my voice a lot of the time to a depraved 50 year old
man. A lot of the time that's like a
(23:31):
gravelly kind of Batman esque voice that I do a lot.
Sometimes I do a whimsical trickster kind of voice,
sometimes I do the classic soldier.
Very rarely do I get to use my own voice, I find, and I know
that's not the case for most voice actors.
(23:52):
A lot of voice actors I know very rarely leave their range
that much. Some of them do, but in my case
that wasn't the journey that I've had.
I think it's pretty cool that you are that diverse and you can
kind of just go from 1 range to a completely other different
(24:12):
side of that range. It's cool.
It's fun. It's definitely fun, Yeah.
It definitely broadens the auditions that hit my inbox.
That's definitely something thatI am thankful for, for sure.
So let me ask you about this because you were in something, I
(24:34):
buried the lead earlier. You were in ATV show?
I was, yes. That I actually like you were in
the the season for no might be the series finale.
Hope not, but it might be of ObiWan.
What was that experience like for you?
(24:56):
It was an incredible experience.I don't know how it happened.
It was a whirlwind from start tofinish.
I have a friend who was at the time doing casting work.
He cast extras for various TV shows and one day he just
(25:19):
happened to post on his Instagram story that he was
looking for a 511 male. With my build, my weight, my
coloring. Just you.
He was looking for you. He was looking for me, I guess.
So I applied. I sent over my measurements,
everything, and maybe two days later, I got a reply from him
(25:45):
saying, hey, Karen, you've been picture picked.
This was the first time I've done any extra work at all.
I said picture picked. What does that mean?
And he said that means you were chosen for a role that was very
specific and likely has good camera time.
And I said, oh, great, and mind if I ask who the director is who
(26:09):
chose me? Because he said the director
picture picked me and he said Deborah Chow.
And then I knew instantly from that moment, Oh my God, this is
Obi Wan because I'm an obsessed star.
Wars. Awesome.
Mega Nerd and I knew who was directing that show and I just
lost it. I was so excited.
So a day later then I went to get fitted for my costume and I
(26:32):
had no idea what I was playing, who I was playing, nothing.
I get to Rosencrans in Los Angeles, to their lot and they,
well, actually there was anotherbuilding where all the costumes
were kept at the time, but anyway, close by there in Los
Angeles, and they selected me toplay a partisan pilot.
(26:56):
They said I am one of the Rebel pilots, not Rebel Alliance, but
they were sort of a splinter group in the show, if you've
seen it, O'Shea Jackson's troop of characters with the
Partisans. They were called the Partisans,
and my role was a pilot. So they gave me this flight
(27:16):
suit, goggles, boots. It was like a World War 2
fatigue kind of suit. It was very low tech versus the
Empire with all their stormtrooper gear and
everything. So Fast forward a week, it's my
first day. There was four days I was
scheduled to shoot. It was during COVID, so it was
(27:40):
very involved. You have to get the set by 4:00
AM, do the test, get the approvals, then sit in these
pods at 6:00 AM waiting for themto call you to set.
And they gave us a tour and everything with the sets look
like they had these beautiful built sets of the planet, the
spaceship that we're going to bein.
(28:00):
We got to see the volume directly behind all those sets
as well, which is massive. And then the first day went as
expected. Where I'm in the spaceship it
is. My scene is in the final
episode, Episode 6. We're evading the Empire because
(28:23):
there is that moment where Obi Wan and the rebel groups in the
Lay escape from Vader and they're fighting in that cave
and you're flying off. I'm the pilot that gets them out
of there when Darth Vader crushes the other ship.
Yes, great. Scene you flying it but.
(28:43):
Great scene, you saved everyone. We saved everyone and I lived.
I want to make that clear to Lucasfilm and Disney if they're
living. I lived so you can bring me
back. I can survive.
I could become a geriatric in the Ray era if you like Disney.
That would be great. That was an awesome scene.
(29:05):
Wonderful scene. You are part of history.
You are part of Star Wars lore. That's the main humbling thing
about it. It's a property that I adore so
much and I I love everything. For the record, about Star Wars.
There's some people that pick and choose.
I enjoy it for what it is. I don't take it too seriously.
(29:30):
I try not to take any property that I really like to to
seriously so I can end up enjoying the new things that
come along. That's just my perspective on
anyone else. You can do you.
So what was? What was your character's name?
I got to create it actually because he didn't have a name.
His name is just Partisan Pilot, but they gave me permission to
(29:53):
give him a name and I gave him the name Rev Rev Kesron.
That's a good name. And I named him Rev because my
favorite Sith Lord is Darth Revan from the Knights of the
Old Republic game, so he's a little.
Great game. Shout out to that character.
(30:16):
My favorite, but I would be remiss to not mention my
favorite part of working on it was working with Ewan McGregor
himself. The first time I got to really
work with him was on the second day where I get there as usual,
(30:38):
COVID test, 6:00 AM sitting in your pod.
Then the assistant director comes up to me saying, is Kara
Meridench here? And I said, yeah, I'm here, we
need you on set. And I'm looking around.
I go, just me and they say, yeah, get on set.
So I arrived there at 6:30 in the morning.
(30:58):
It's just me, Ewan McGregor and O'Shea Jackson.
That's awesome. I I was thinking what the heck
is going on? What am I doing here?
Are they going to haze me or something?
Why am I the only one here? I'm just the extra and the
scene, the majority of it got cut which I'm bummed about but
(31:19):
it is what it is. The experience is unforgettable
because I got to see 2 big A list actors just do their thing
and then jump into the scene with them.
The scene was during the attack of the Empire where the ship is
getting bombarded by TIE fighterblast and everything.
The ship is shaking and I'm frantically trying to repair
(31:43):
this control console for the ship.
So then O'Shea Jackson comes up to me and asks for a damage
report and I give him this damage report.
You don't hear anything. I'm not miked or anything, but
we're just having this moment inthe corner and I shirk my
shoulders and I'm really scared. And just like then Oshea grabs
(32:03):
my shoulders and I jolt up and he sort of gives me this.
I need you to be the man I need you to be right now.
And I was like, yeah. And I'm like, all right, I'm in
it. And I come back and then I go
back to repairing things and ObiWan pops in and they give a
damage report to him. And that's the scene.
So I do the scene several times and they fill it from all these
(32:26):
different angles. And I'm really excited because
I'm going, Oh my God, I'm right on camera with these two.
This is so cool. Then after that scene, as if
that wasn't enough, Ewan McGregor comes up to me and he's
like, he actually dropped his British Obi Wan accent and just
(32:47):
spoke in his regular Ewan McGregor accent.
I'm not going to, I'm not going to do that here.
I'm not going to do his accent. But he just said, I really liked
the frantic nature that you weredoing with the button pressing
and pulling all the levers and trying to get things to work.
I really felt the urgency in your performance.
(33:07):
And yeah, I know he said that tobe nice to the one extra he was
working with that day. And still though it was, it
meant the world to me to. That's awesome, have him come
back. To me and give me that kudos and
just see me in front of him right there and not be just
(33:28):
window dressing in the Star Warsshoot, you know, he treated me
like a person, which I'll never forget that.
That was dope. Know know what else I like about
this? The fact that Star Wars
characters, even the background ones, people learn and know,
they learn their names, they want to know the back story
(33:49):
behind them. So it's pretty cool that you're
in that Lord and you got to meetEwan McGregor and OC Jackson
Junior. Just an amazing experience it
seemed like. A wonderful experience, it was
unforgettable. 4 days that I wouldn't trade for anything.
Wow. Amazing.
(34:11):
Speaking of Star Wars, actually I have a exclusive for your
podcast because that wasn't my only Star Wars role.
It is. I could just announce this today
because I received this from Disney.
I am the voice of this clone trooper helmet all my
backgrounds screwing up. There is a from the Disney
(34:34):
Store, a 41st Legion Clone Trooper Commander Gree helmet
that is. It's a really nice toy.
Let me actually turn off my background so you could actually
see it. Let me check this out.
Yeah let's see here how do I oh video there we go background.
(35:01):
Just background facts There we go perfect.
None. All right, you see it now that
is awesome It is huge You can actually wear it.
It has a voice changer inside, so I can cheat a little bit
because I did the voice of commander agree, which is a just
(35:23):
sounds like D Bradley breaker clone trooper.
So I do that voice and with the IT has the automatic sounds
where you press it and it's my lines that come out.
But you could also turn on the helmet microphone yourself.
And if you want to try to say for the Republic, you can do
that yourself with the helmet aswell and wear it.
(35:44):
That is awesome. I'm looking it up right now
because I'm going to get me one.You will not find it.
It is. Sold out the moment it came out.
I think it came out five months ago.
I want to say I didn't even know.
I just found out when they sent me the package.
Now I they sent it a little late, but I looked online to see
(36:06):
like, oh, how much is this thing?
Where can people get it on eBay?Last I saw it went for like
$300. Oh yeah, this sucker sold out.
It's a it's a big helmet, so andit's pretty high quality from
what I saw when I opened the box.
So if you can find it, know thatyour friendly neighborhood voice
(36:28):
actor Karen was the one that voiced it.
If I can find it, I'm going to mail it to my friendly
neighborhood voice act and decide it for me.
I'd be happy to. If anyone can come across it and
not pay scalpers, by all means, yeah.
I don't want to pick them. They kick rocks.
Yeah I don't even ask with the switch to debacle.
(36:50):
I tried to pre-order my NintendoSwitch to and it did not go
well. Oh, you didn't get one?
Not yet. My last hope is the Nintendo
main channel source thing where they're doing the if you have 50
hours on your Switch 1, you can register interest to pre-order a
Switch to through Nintendo officially.
(37:12):
That was a crapshoot yesterday. Oh yeah, and today too with
GameStop, it just crashed the website first minute.
Well looking like this, I don't think Amazon opened everyone as
yet. That's true.
So you still got a chance. I still got a chance, I'm
(37:33):
coping, but. Yeah, man, you excited for the
switch to in general? Oh, very, very.
I love Nintendo products. Nintendo properties.
Enjoy. I'll probably enjoy Mario Kart,
the new Donkey Kong game looks really cool.
(37:54):
It looks really good. Funny story since you mentioned
it. A kid came to my job today right
with his dad and he had a switchwith him.
So I asked him I said did you see the new switch too?
Like what is the new switch too coming out?
And I showed her a picture of itand he flipped out and showed
his dad. And his dad was like oh crap, I
(38:15):
I just bought this one. No.
You got to buy another one now. Get ready for a $499 Christmas,
dad. Yep, it's a super cool console
though. Oh yeah.
So let let's talk about Nightwing because one of the I
(38:37):
don't know Matthew Dawson ever told you this, but when I listen
to Nightwing the series, I said this guy is perfect at Nightwing
and I have to have one to show because he's that good.
I was blown away by your acting ability in that.
(38:59):
I wish I can take credit for that, but that was not me.
No, that was Ryan Doe. Oh yeah, you.
You were in Titans. I was in Nightwing the series
actually, but I was Joker in Nightwing.
That is correct. You're right, because I had to
come to Matthew about that because you sound exactly like
(39:20):
Joker to the T That is what I talked to Matthew about.
I was like, did you get Mark Hamill to do this?
That is humbling to hear. Thank you.
Anyone who feels that I bring any sort of justice to that
(39:40):
performance, in particular Mark Hamill's, it's, it's why I do
it, really. It's for those fans.
I I try to think of what little things does he do to make you
think and feel. It's the Mark Hamill Joker.
His laughs are different. He is giggles are different.
(40:01):
His inflections at certain points are different.
It's never the same Joker voice. There's a way that he did it in
Batman the Animated series. There's a way he did it in the
New Batman Adventures. There's even a.
Deviation where he slightly changes it and gets more
sinister in the Batman Beyond. Return of the Joker movie.
I just saw all these things. All those incarnations of Joker,
(40:25):
Mark Hamill put a little different spin on it.
So every time, surely enough, I do the Joker voice.
I get a lot of people that say, oh, you sound a lot like Mark
Hamill, but then there's other ones that go, it's nothing like
him. And I said, well, actually it
sounds like him during this era.I chose this era because the 3D
(40:45):
model that Devil Artemis used looks like that version of the
character. What I think it's so cool that
you remember each era of Mark Hamill's Joker and how it
changes, like from Batman Animated Series to a new
invention of Batman to Batman Beyond Maternal Joker, because
(41:08):
they're vastly different in veryunique ways.
It's subtle, but the actors alsoget older and change too.
As you hear the Arkham Asylum, Arkham Knights version that Mark
Hamill does, it's very lower register, more crust to his
(41:29):
voice where he's like, that's nice of you to say that's you
hear that sort of guttural soundbecause he's also sick too in
those games as well. He's dying in those games.
But then the new Batman Adventures, Joker, he's like,
I'm going to throw an exploding,we'll be cushioned at you.
(41:51):
Like you. He's a more jovial.
He's more full of life. He's having a time of his life,
Yeah. What we'll talk about such a
unique way to kind of just go into that and flip from that air
like a drop of a hat almost. Oh, yeah, it's it's how I got
(42:13):
started, actually. You asked.
You asked before about my origins.
The first thing I did in voice acting, besides the YouTube
channel, I did birthday cards and seasons greetings.
Sort of like cameo before cameo for Kevin Conroy, Batman and
Mark Hamill, Joker. I would get paid.
That's how I paid for my collegebooks.
I would get paid by people to send messages going like happy
(42:37):
birthday Brian, I believe in you, that's awesome.
Happy birthday you useless clown.
That's how I do it. Found it July 3rd 2023.
I want to look it up. Matthew sent me the trailer for
(42:57):
it and I said incredible. Who's playing the Joker?
There were so many great performances in that small clip
that I need to see who's playingthe Joker.
And then he said, all right, Carom is playing the Joker.
(43:17):
He legit sounds perfect. And I said I want him on my
podcast. That Joker was awesome and he in
20/23/2023. Well, we made it happen.
Better late than never, as I always say, Yeah.
But I, I, I love that you are a student of the game and you've
(43:43):
played characters. You want to play characters, you
want to play a multitude of characters and you're like in
great in this universe. Now, whether it's the mortal
verse, whether it's you played, you played Batman is Batman and
Joker in the what was it called the death battle, Death battle
(44:07):
and it was the injustice thing. I I want to say that what I'll
talk about. Yes, Injustice.
I played Nightwing right wing aswe called him, and Batman right
wing became my favorite character.
So. In the game, the Damien version
(44:27):
of Nightwing, I despised it whenit came out.
I was so pissed where they killed him with a rock.
I'm like, I had to hold back myself from the rage, but I was
like, it's OK, I can still play as him.
I can still go up the ladders and rank with my Dick Grayson
version of Nightwing. It's cool.
Even though the story fine, but this mortal verse charity live
(44:53):
stream that we did for children's hospitals it we had
the chance to really play with it.
And I decided to make him this beatnik surfer dude who's all
about taking down the establishment and ragging on
Green Arrow and Batman for beingbillionaires.
And he's like, oh, billionaires tie up the working class.
(45:15):
I see how it is he's getting. Tied up by.
Batman at the end of his fight. He was so fun to play.
That that. Was Batman.
I have to play a little bit moreeven heeled and usual Batman,
but I got to have my fun with Nightwing and right wing.
It's, it's such a cool thing that you get to play these
(45:36):
different voices and these different characters.
So let let me ask you this. But everything you've done so
far, you the dream role is Nightwing.
What is the biggest role you think you played so far?
(45:58):
It is not announced yet, but it will be announced soon.
I can't talk about it, but it isI alluded to that Dream come
true role. It is technically 2, but when it
comes out I will talk about it and shout it out from the
(46:19):
mountaintops. But the one that I can announce
that is very near and dear to meis I got to play Hell Joe in the
Tower of God mobile game, A Tower of God Great journey
that's on the App Store now. It's a typical sort of you
(46:43):
gather 5 fighters and you go through the tower.
I don't know if you know the premise of that anime, but there
is these floors in this tower that the main characters are
trying to climb this tower to achieve some sort of
enlightenment slash. This up tower of God.
(47:04):
Tower of God there is an anime that is two seasons long now but
I believe, I'm not sure if it's getting a third season.
I haven't heard anything about athird season, but the manwa
itself is really good. I highly recommend the manwa.
OK. And the character that I play
(47:24):
hasn't appeared in the anime yet, but he's my favorite
villain in the whole show. Oh yeah, feel it.
I'm a villain, yes, in this hell, Joe is one of the most
interesting characters in Tower of God because there's a lot of
really nasty people in Tower of God.
There's a lot of evil characters, very evil
characters. But this character, for those
(47:45):
that have read the story, he starts off as a good person.
He starts off as, I don't want to spoil anything, I won't go
into too much detail, but he is just someone trying to do the
right thing. And you see as the story
progresses how insanely corrupt he becomes and how he abandons
(48:10):
his ideals and what he wanted todo for the people on the floor
of death. He wants to leave this floor of
death, which is one of the floors on the tower.
He's stuck there and he becomes this tyrant on this floor and
the main characters have to contend with him.
(48:31):
He just has such layers to him as a character and getting the
opportunity to be the first English voice of this character.
I don't know if there's going tobe an anime, and I don't know if
I would even be considered for that role when it does come
around if it does. But to be the first person to
give him my favorite character of the story, a voice, was a
(48:54):
dream come true. And he's just so fun to play,
too. That is awesome.
Now I'm going to watch this. By the way, I love how unique
Japanese anime stories are. They're like vastly different
and like unique and tell these like amazing stories that I
like. I don't even know how you
(49:14):
describe it like like I would, Iwouldn't like think of this
story. I wouldn't.
Do the whole concepts. Yeah.
And they're now diving more intoones from Korea as well, from
China as well. They're branching out More and
more of these properties are getting adaptations into
(49:37):
animation. So that means more work for us
and more cool stories to tell. I was going to ask you, would
you be into doing the voices like the live action shows and
stuff like that, Like the Koreanshows and stuff like the dubs?
Yes, I've actually done a few dubs as well.
I primarily work in video games, but I also do animation,
(50:01):
dubbing, and commercials as wellfor the most part.
The one I haven't hit yet is audiobooks.
That's a good one. Audiobooks.
There are people that really love audiobooks and they do pay
decently, but there's just something about them that to me,
(50:23):
doesn't light my soul on fire like the other stuff.
That makes sense. I'll do them, but they're never,
they've never been that much of A priority to explore.
I don't know. That might change as my career
goes on. I might delve into audio books
and fall in love with the process, but I feel like there's
(50:44):
always that one thing in voice over where voice actors go.
Maybe that's not for me. Makes sense?
Have you heard of the Star Wars ones?
Star Wars audiobooks. Yes.
Oh yes, yes, Star Wars audiobooks, Warhammer
audiobooks, the I go down the rabbit hole.
(51:04):
I I like those. Ones, they're very good.
Those ones I can get behind actually, where there are
somewhere it's multiple actors. They're playing on features.
Like an audio play. Like a throne series?
Yes, exactly. Things like that I'm into.
I like audio plays, which I havedone, you know, I mean, moral
voice technically is an audio play, yeah, But the ones I'm
(51:29):
talking about more so are like reading an audio biography, an
autobiography from start to finish, that kind of stuff.
That's different. That takes a special breed of
voice actor I think to enjoy I. Agree.
So what is a project that you want Matthew to work on so you
can be honest? Oh, let me think.
(51:56):
OK so I'm going to keep it to Joker stories because the Joker
is my main Canon character for the mortal verse.
Like mine is Green Lantern. Yes, which you chef's kiss to
your green. Lantern, I really appreciate
(52:18):
that. Thank you.
You bring that grit to Green Lantern that he needs.
Like he's the guy that you can stand behind.
He's like, OK, he's going to getthis done.
We've got this. You bring that authority to your
Green Lantern, which I really like.
Yeah, I love that. I could do it and it'd be
(52:38):
different from the ones who've done it before me, 'cause I
love, I love Jon Stewart's GreenLantern, I love Jon Stewart.
That's my guy. And I feel like because of how
important that role has been andthe person who has played that
role, I need to do it different enough in a way to show respect
(53:03):
and stand out, if you know what I mean by that.
No, I totally get it because I Ido the exact opposite with Joker
and Batman. I totally get it.
Which is why I really want to play Nightwing, because I have a
completely original idea for himversus doing what was done in
(53:24):
the past with Batman and Joker. It's more of an homage as well.
I like scratching that itch where oh, that's exactly how he
would say it or oh, that's the way the laugh would sound.
I enjoy that more than putting my own spin beyond like some
(53:45):
decisions that I make. I like that nostalgic sound for
those two characters only. So those are the only two
characters where I evolve it from an impression and make it
sort of an 80% match. I don't want it to be a complete
exact impression, but enough of the bones remain in place to
(54:10):
where people go, oh, that soundsjust like Mark Hamill, or oh,
that sounds like Kevin Conroy. Especially now that Kevin Conroy
has now passed away. I take that on, particularly the
Batman role, only in projects where I feel it is a tribute to
(54:31):
him. I try to keep away from him when
it's just something that is, I don't want to say a throwaway
project, but something that doesn't have a deep rooted
passion behind it. I agree that makes sense,
especially how how important Kevin Conroy is to so many
(54:53):
people. It's just that that legacy that
he kind of left behind of that road.
Oh, there. Will never be another Kevin
Conroy for sure. I agree.
My my, my dream project I keep getting back to try to do is
Sonic, because he's a big Sonic the Hegemong fan.
(55:16):
Oh, really? Oh yeah, he's a huge Sonic fan.
I did not know that about him. Yeah, he's a big Sonic fan.
Told me he's just going to do a Sonic Universe.
He should. He's heavy in the law and
everything. Would he?
I wonder if he would do the comics or the games because
those are very different. That's a good question.
(55:40):
Matt, tell us next time we're inthe group chat, tell us which
one you would do the Sonic Penders universe or the
Adventure universe in the games You.
Know I'm going to ask him that, see what he says.
Yeah, like, tell us, Matt, are you into the freaky echidna
(56:01):
stuff that Penders put in? Tell me that.
Tell me that now, Matthew. There's the Easter egg they
called one of the motor verse projects where I sing the son of
the Hedgehog theme song from thecartoon because I just because I
know he likes the show. Sonic X or the original Sonic?
(56:26):
The one that was on ABC, not X. The one that was in the 90s?
Oh, OK. The one with Rubius and Grounder
and all those other characters, right.
Yes, that's great. Both because there was 2 shows
back then, two Sonic shows at the same time, which was weird
but it worked. I didn't see the other one, the
(56:49):
one where he was I think in a band or something.
It was 1 where he was a in a a freedom fighter resistance
group, both played by Julia White by the way.
And there was one that was kind of like more for smaller kids
where he was like, you know, it was kind of more closer to the
first game. The one with Sonic says and all
(57:11):
that, yes, right, Yes, that's the one I saw.
And then I moved to Turkey for seven years and missed the other
one. Oh, OK, that makes sense.
The other one's really good. It's a darker show.
Oh, OK. It's like a lot more like it's
like more want to see like preteens, maybe a little more
(57:33):
grown up, but it's it's good. It's really good.
My I think my favorite Sonic show was the OVA with Metal
Sonic. That was good.
I watched that till my VHS cassette wouldn't play it no
more. Even after you could be having
these conversations with people. Not really a Sonic fan.
(57:55):
Yeah, Sonic is a good property. It I feel we've gotten a lot of
good stuff lately with it, especially with the Shadows
hedgehog game, the shorts that we had for the game as well.
I love that with Roger Craig Smith and sending Shadow into
space with the Maria montage andeverything where you just go
(58:18):
stop it. That was that was great.
My 2007 Sonic the Hedgehog obsessed heart.
So good it. Was great, really was great.
All right, Any 5 things you wantto say before we go, brother?
(58:38):
Let's see just that. Tune into the mortal verse to
keep seeing more of our wonderful peers do what they're
great at. They're launching a new Batman
Beyond show very soon. I'm not a part of this one, but
they got some really cool talent.
(58:59):
Not yet. Maybe he'll bring that returning
the Joker. That yeah, I didn't answer that
question. Which stories would I want to
see from the mortal verse? Definitely return of the Joker,
especially now that he's going into that beyond.
Universe. That'd be really.
Fun. I love that so much.
We're so good. And I would be remiss to say not
(59:23):
doing Killing Joke. I mean, Killing Joke is the
Joker story and the animated adaptation left some things to
be desired. Yes, it did.
So particularly the intro story with that, but I don't know, I
(59:44):
think Matthew might, I'm not sure if he's a fan of the story
or not, but he could do something interesting with it, I
feel. We've had conversations about
it. Good.
And I need to, I need to know the Green Lantern story that
you'd want. I was telling him that I think a
Green Lantern Motion Manhunter buddy series would be really
(01:00:07):
interesting. Yes, or a Green Arrow, Green
Lantern buddy cop story, too. Do both of them?
Do both of them, Matthew, come on, get to writing.
Yeah, we need to give. Devlin is Green Lantern.
I always think of the Kevin Smith run.
(01:00:29):
Oh yes. Green Lantern and Green Arrow,
that'd be that'd be really cool.We could do something like that.
Our traveling heroes. Like it now.
Now we got the ball rolling after we give you stuff to write
for years to come. Yes, yes, get to it.
Crack the whip on them. More joking content.
(01:00:51):
Get going. More Joker, more Green Lantern.
That's what the people are asking for.
The three Joker story. Which one?
The three Joker story. All three Jokers.
Oh, that would be interesting toperform.
Certainly just the the thing about that story, I am a when it
(01:01:17):
comes to my comics relationships, I have, I don't
want to say ships, but there arerelationships that make me go
and one of them was Red Hood andBarbara Gordon being paired
together in that story. Yeah, that was a little rough.
That was, I mean, from the Barber perspective.
(01:01:37):
I know Barber fans don't like itbecause it's sort of like
passing her around to Robins, which I feel is a disservice to
her character. She's not just the piece that
goes between Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and Jason Todd and other
universes. And Bruce Wayne.
(01:01:58):
And Bruce Wayne don't remind me of that, of that story of the
animated universe, but also in Red Hood's perspective too.
It's just weird because he was so much younger than her too.
Yeah. And they were never portrayed
that way 'cause I mean, they're both legal and consenting adults
(01:02:22):
in the story. So it's like, OK, whatever.
But at the same time you keep itin the back of your head where
when this guy was nine years oldwearing Pixie boots, she was a
20 something year old librarian in some universes and a little
older than other ones. It just feels weird.
(01:02:43):
Yeah, but it does. Matt, Matt, you can do some
rewrites on that story. I don't mind.
I think the fans wouldn't mind either.
Not at all, to say the least. I like that Matthews kind of
made the motor versus own thing,so.
(01:03:04):
Yeah, it's been evolving into its own unique thing with its
own unique fan base, and I'm really happy for him.
It couldn't be happening to a cooler guy.
I agree. All right, let him know to find
you, brother. You can find me on Instagram,
blue sky, Twitter I I don't callit X it called Twitter and my
(01:03:31):
website. My handle is the same
everywhere. It's Karem is welmed that is
Karem is welmed KEREMISWHELMED. I'm a big Young Justice fan, so
of course I made my handle a call back to that show being
whelmed. Great show.
(01:03:52):
Fantastic show, definitely checkit out and my website if you
ever want to get in touch for any voice over projects, it is
Karen meritagevoices.com. You can just e-mail me or send
me a line on the website. There's a little drop down box
where you can send me a message and yeah, hope to continue doing
(01:04:17):
what I'm doing. Got some fun projects coming out
that I can't talk about besides this clone trooper helmet next
to me. And yeah, just living the dream
out here with my fellow voice actors in crime like you.
Dope. Thanks, can't wait to do this
again when I can actually talk. Yes I I can only imagine how
(01:04:42):
your throat is feeling after talking for an hour and it's
still not 100%. I hate that feeling.
So that's rough. Get some soup, get some tea and
just heal and try to stay away from the mic if you can.
I know. The auditions.
I know the auditions come in andyou can't choose when to do
them, but try to stay healthy myfriend.
(01:05:06):
I will do. And as always, Delma Cox
Spirits, we are out Peace.
