Speaker 1 (00:04):
Here's how it all went down in South Philadelphia. T J.
Edwards kicking things off with an i NT in the
first quarter. He's been a bright spot in the defense.
Here we go. Jalen Hurts rushed his first first touchdown
of the day. He was liking what he was seeing,
so he thought he'd take it in on his own
again for number two. That was the second rushing touchdown
of three on the deck. And lastly, here he is Darius,
(00:26):
a big play slag coming up with the pick six.
That's his third touchdown in the last four games. Swucom
into the postgame show presented by Rico. I'm Gabriella d
Givanni here with fran Duffy and I Grief. They got
the monkey off their Backfellas first home win of the
season and it was a good one. Yeah, just a
great effort, dominant effort. When you look at the way
(00:47):
the team played today. Coming into this game, we knew
it would be strength versus strength. That Saints run defense
number one in the league coming into this game going
up against the Eagles rushing offense, that it climbed his
way to number three in the league. The Eagles over
two hundred and forty yards rushing today, and I thought
that the Jalen Hurts element of the running game would
(01:08):
be an issue for this Saints defense. They had the
number one Russian defense, but they hadn't faced a quarterback
with the dual threat that Jalen Hurts possesses. And today
you saw with three Russian touchdowns that big one. His
third one, which really sealed the victory for the Eagles,
was just a deciding factor in this game. And that's
the thing I think when you're preparing to face this
(01:29):
Eagles offense. There's a lot of layers to this run game,
to this pass game. We've talked about the RPO game,
the screen game, all the different things they do from
that standpoint, but one thing that really stood out to
me last week against the Denver Broncos guys was that
it wasn't just the basic inside zone and basic zone
read plays. They really kind of opened up the playbook
when it came to the quarterback read element of the
(01:50):
run game. They were doing a lot of different things.
They were making it look like one thing then coming
back with another one. Sometimes Jalen Hurts is reading a defender,
sometimes he's not. You don't know what's what as a defense.
So I thought we saw more of that here in
this game. Just so much diversity in the run game
and a lot for defenses to prepare for. You know
what I really like. The Saints came into this game
allowing just an average of seventy three yards per game.
(02:11):
The Eagles rushed for one fifty two at the half
and then two forty four on the day. So what
I liked is that the Eagles stayed with what has
been working. They knew they were going to be up
against a very tough run defense, but they said, look,
this is what's working for us right now in these
last few weeks, so let's stay there. If it doesn't work,
we know that we can rely on the passing game
as well. So they kept going. They kept feeding the ball,
(02:32):
feeding the ball, and again opening up that passing game.
Dallas Goddard had a great day as well. Yeah, France,
that's the difference from earlier this year to what we've
seen over the last four weeks. Earlier this year, Nick
Sirianning is offensive coaching staff trying to figure out what
the identity of this offense should be based on the
personnel that they've had I feel like over the last
(02:52):
month they found that identity. And when you find your
identity and you trust in it, I don't care what
the opponent is doing to you, You're going to stick
to what's true to you. And that's why what you
mentioned Ellen is so important, and that reinforces how they
believe in the identity that they've discovered over the last month.
This is a run first team. They're going to base
(03:13):
everything else they do in the offense all the running game,
which I love. And although they had success early running
the football, bottom line is there were times where they
didn't have success running and they still stuck with it.
So to me, that's the true indication that the coaching
staff has found their identity. They believe in it, and
they trust it. And that's the thing is that you
mentioned earlier, like this was against the number one rush
(03:36):
defense in the NFL. So when the Eagles get to
the second half, they're up thirty three to seven in
this game, they're essentially in the four minute drill for
that entire second half, much like what we saw last
week on the road against Denver where Jalen hurts through
three passes in the entire second half. The Eagles were
in a situation where you could see that again. This
time though, you're against a defense that can stop the
(03:56):
run at a high, high level, and they had to
find a way to figure it out late in the game.
What do you see that long touchdown drive. It's obviously
capped by the long touchdown run from Jalen Hurts, his
third of the day to get the Eagles into the
end zone and seal this victory. Well, with that, we're
going to head over to Lincoln Financial Field where Eagles
insider Dave Spidero joins US Day. Welcome in. We're starting
to scratch the surface here on what we saw today
(04:17):
in the big win against the Saints. One of those,
of course, being the dominant run game. What did you
see from that offensive line? How they were getting after
that d line today? Yeah, I mean really physical, Nick
Siriannie talked about it this week, how physical this offensive
line is, and it's really interesting. Guy. I read something
earlier in the week Sean Payton talking about the Eagles
run scheme, and you know, guys, look webbing around for
(04:39):
a long time. I can't remember a time when the
Eagles offense when you knew it was coming you knew
they were going to run the football week after week
after week, and nobody is stopping them now. In twenty seventeen,
Eagles had great balance, big leads, they could run the football.
But this is different. So, I mean, is it the
run scheme? Is it the offensive line just winning like
(05:01):
playing fullyball? Is it the downhill style of this offense?
Jordan Howard obviously is just punishing people Miles Sanders a
big game today? Or is it? Sounds like a little
bit of everything, including the threat of Jalen Hurts, which
makes it so difficult for defenses to kind of understand
where the ball's going to go on the ground. So
(05:22):
it's a devastating weapon, Ella, and it's great to see
how Nick is convinced that the offensive line that he
can use that strength and just stick with the run game,
stick with its, stick with its stick with it. Something's
going to break eventually, Dave. How valuable is Jeff Stoutlin
to this entire operation? I mean you mentioned is it
(05:42):
the offensive line is at the run scheme? Well, Jeff Stoutlin,
He's got his imprint on both passts of that right,
and so clearly a very very important part of the
way the Eagles are having success right now offensively. Yeah,
and let's remember Fran agreed with you one percent. Remember
that the Eagles are operating here without Brandon Brooks and
Isaac sayum A. Certainly taking nothing away from Landon Dickerson,
(06:03):
who has formed just a larger than life two athletic
refrigerators over there on the left side of the Eagles
offensive line. And Jack Driscoll, who's been really solid on
the right side of the line working with Lane Johnson.
So again, in the big picture, you kind of look
to transition that offensive line. Right now, they are just
(06:24):
killing people and that's a great front. I mean, those
linebackers get after it. Ike and I were up in
the press box in the first half talking about how
quick they are to the football, how well they tackle,
how they close down things. But the Eagles just too much,
too physical, too big, too punishing. They just wear you down. Yeah,
no doubt about it. Dave and I thought our defense
did a nice job with Trevor Simeon and Sean Payton's offense.
(06:47):
Simeon coming into the game hadn't turned the ball over
five touchdowns. Eagles defense able to get two interceptions off
of you obviously the big play the sleigh head to
get an the end zone, and even TJ outwards interception
helps set up touchdown early for the Eagles. Just talk
about Jonathan Gaina's defense and the scheme they sort of
use today against Sean Payton and his l and even
(07:10):
before that the first possession, Avante Maddox comes with the blitz,
comes free, comes clean and forces the third down incompletion.
So you know, we've been watching Jonathan throughout the year.
Where's the pressure coming from? As he's learning the personnel,
he's dialing it up more and more. The timing has
been really good, the execution has been outstanding, and the
(07:32):
Eagles putting pressure on quarterbacks, and they've been taking the
football away. I think they've gotten now twelve takeaways in
the last eight games. And obviously Darius Slay when he
gets the football in his hands is a weapon. So yeah,
it's all coming together for the Eagles. Great play t
J Edwards, two takeaways today, I mean really around the football,
he's playing outstanding. Just a solid before now look a
(07:54):
little bit of a lull. Okay, Eagles fans, I know
your palms were a little bit sweaty there for a while,
but the Eagles clamped down when they had to. Early
on though, just completely dominating Trevor Simeon and the Saints offense,
which we kind of expected coming into the game as
the Eagles should have dominated. They certainly did. Yeah, obviously
jumping out to the thirty three to seven lead, the
defense having a big part in that day, but just
(08:16):
really quickly going back over the offensive side of the football,
You're impressions of seeing Jalen Hurts in this game. Obviously
very impressive on the ground, first Eagles quarterback in history
to rush for three touchdowns in one game. But it's
just to kind of get your thoughts on Jalen and
how he executed the offense here today. Yeah, I mean
he was early on, he and Dallas Goddard had something
good going. He got something going with DeVante. He's managing
(08:39):
the pocket very well, he's managing the pressure very well,
making good decisions, excellent ball security. So can't be anything
but really really impressed with Jalen. Who look, when he
played against the Saints, we talked about it before the
game back in December. He was an unknown commodity. He's
surprised the Saints. There were no surprises today. They knew
(08:59):
what Jalen Hurts could do, and he's still sliced and
diced and Eagles running for two hundred forty plus yards.
I mean, wow, what a game from the Eagles, with
a game from the offense and Jalen Hurts the orchestrator
of all of this. Calm cole and collected times today
where he was a little bit fun watching him kind
of buy time in the pocket, run around back there.
But those are the things that he can do. And again,
(09:21):
eventually he's gonna keep putting so much pressure on a
defense that the damn breaks and he makes a big
play like he did at the late in the fourth quarter. Dave,
I want to throw some bouquets at the head man, right.
The head man gets a lot of criticism for his
game plans, things that he does. As far as in
the game, I thought he had an excellent game plan today.
(09:43):
Really the last few weeks figuring out how to use
his players to the best of their ability. Just talk
about Nick Sirianni and how he had this team ready
to go today. There was a lot of pressure to
get their first win at home, and they were able
to come through with it. Yeah. I mean in the
tough times earlier in the season, Nick kept talking about
doubling down on what you know to be true. So
(10:04):
he stayed consistent all the way through. That's what players
want to see, no surprises. Uh certainly kept his optimism
and I think it was outstanding. Else Denny game plan
to me, we have Lane Johnson at the podium, LA,
(10:27):
do you feel like if you guys can run against
and we can run against anybody. We ran against him today,
So that was good. We uh knew coming in they
had a good D line, good uh lineback and corps
stuff in a run all year. So yeah, like I said, man,
we're gonna try to keep doing what we're doing and
then moving forward and no teams we're gonna try to
scheme out to try to stop that. So I any
(10:48):
different against the runner? Was it just man oh man?
In physical way? Yeah, I mean, you know, staying on
your tracks, picking up you know, I started doing some
cross talks, some some slagging, some stunt and uh, we
just gotta be more efficient at times a second half
picking up that and not making the game as you
know close as it was. Their chores in a couple
(11:09):
of guys you would come in this season or maybe
not played much before in the season. When is it
coaches that let's just come in and everything seems to
be roatively the seamless and what you guys to do
got just sank practice, you know. Uh the season that
start off, how we wanted a lot of penalties, a
lot of um you know, not being seen together. And
(11:31):
you know we preached, uh you know about uh stay
doubling down them on what we do and and finally
started turn at least the last a couple of games.
So that's really it. Moving forward, we got the Giants
to the division games, so uh, you know, no games
bigger than the next. This together, let's lay away, you know. Yeah,
(11:52):
like I said, man, he talked when when things weren't
going well, he he talked about doubling down on what
we do. Um, that's really it, just staying saying the
course and that's really it. I mean in this league,
when when losses happened, you got to you gotta learn
from them the best you can and adjust to move
on and try to do better moving forward. But going
(12:14):
from thirty three thirty three to seven league, then they
make a run fifteen points that that kind of unevenness.
Is that what is that a sign up with like
a a young team trying to figure it out, or
what it goes down to everybody executing and letting your
guard down. I mean, it's the league so talented that
you can't do that. You can't allow that to happen.
(12:34):
When it does, you'll see stuff like that. You'll see
games turn especially against good You know, the Saints have
had our number for a number of years and uh,
I mean we we know we've we've played against them
and and yeah, they're making a late surgeon there in
the second half your vanas you're going on jail to
come back. I was down run at the end hit
he hit that l one juke and I was that mean, man,
(12:57):
ain't no way boy, ask of what I was. I
just I was just I couldn't even tell where he was.
I was blocking. Next thing, I know, he sticks in
the ground and and pulls it for you know, big
time play. So yeah, I mean it seems so steady
emotionally jailing. Was he was he like extra hyped after
that touchdown? Run? No? I really, yeah, you don't just
(13:20):
uh pretty even killed every day, same same demeanor same. Uh,
and really since he's been here, he's always same. You've
seeing a lot of football obviously, UM over the past
four games. You guys are average two d guard across
from muse when you putting your finger on something. Isn't
just having that extra off the quarterback brought in the
(13:42):
football as well, saxt Yeah, just s extra dynamic. You
got uh two dinosaurs over there on the left side,
and and uh a lot of in landing and then
me and Driscoll there on the right. So yeah, man,
we're trying to uh just just keep setting what we're doing,
keep running, uh sets it up for play action. And
(14:03):
you know, I think maybe we were conservative there in
the second half and let our guard down and and
you saw, you know, the game was coming back in
the Saint Stavor, So uh, we just got to learned
from that moving on, and you know as the season
UM moves closer, UM to the next game. Been the
last few weeks, you know, with stuff that you and
(14:23):
mental health issues, REALI issues, everything really good. Yeah. I
mean a lot of my U issues were UM side
effects of UM yes medications I was on. So once
I stabilized, I feel good. Really no issues there and
so moving forward, just it's all about communicating for us,
me to uh, you know, to my to my guys,
(14:45):
to my people and my coaches. You've ever seen Jaylan
maybe when he beat me and Greg Ward and uh
at the house shooting threes. It's about the most excited
I've seen him. If you get at a little ship,
be there with a lot of I think, Davin, we're
kind of going at it. Yeah, I don't know what
(15:05):
they'll happen. It's like fucking UFC two eighty six out there.
I don't know what happened. I don't know what calls it.
I think I was on the backside of the play.
I just saw his big ass rolling and daving port
rolling together and sense the frustration maybe the Saints for
feeling at that point, because you go, yeah, you got
that big dinosaur on you the milatta. Yeah, I get
(15:28):
angry too. This one. We get teachers. We can see
tail and make plays like twenty before you are run.
And also the Vulto player I think is the San
Diego game. I mean, you're a famous charter the game. Um,
how much anything does that brings to the team and
how much they too, like you guys have a lot
of a lot of respect when he makes some times
play yeah, because it puts the defense in the buyd
(15:49):
when things break down and and you can do stuff
like that. I mean it's a it's a gut punch
to him. So having a guy's firstal that can do
that makes the run game open, makes it so difficult
for for defenses. So we just gotta keep it up
moving forward. Thanks, you got things to go with the
(16:21):
interception early on? Take us through that play. What did
you see there and what did that happened? Uh? Yeah,
it was honestly, I was just reading the quarterback's eyes
and kind of saw the over out coming behind me
and um, you know, just made a play in the football.
But the rush was getting there, so we knew he
had to get it out quick. And um, yeah, I
just made a play. So everything else was locked up
and he had no choice but to try to fit
it in and um, finally got one. So it felt good. One.
(16:44):
I think a lot thurn down early on. Why were
you effected there? Yeah, we knew that. Um, we just
wanted to get them in tough you know, longer third
down situations. Um, and again we have such a good
front that if we get them in those longer distances,
those guys can really get home with stunts and things
like that. So we wanted to kind of make him
as uncomfortable as we could. And um, that really accounts
(17:04):
to being good on first and second. Now, not the injuries.
You guys had a bunch of injuries on the teams
of second half, your packages and stuff. I mean, they
supported it, they started to come back. What is that?
What is that? Yeah, I mean obviously it's football and things.
You know, injuries are are part of the game. Um.
I think that's why we do such a good job
during the week of of guys knowing what they're supposed
(17:25):
to do and um how to do it. And again
at the end of the day, they made some some
good throws, some good catches, um that were well contested
at times. So um, you know they made they made
some plays at the end there. But we're just we're
really excited about how we played, um as a unit
in terms of energy and effort and um just getting
to the football. Well about this matchup the Saints on
offense that you guys moved so heavy into nickel and
away from the you know, the base defense. Yeah, they
(17:48):
do a really good job of just mixing in a
bunch of personnels to try to get you off track
of what you're trying to do. And um, we kind of,
you know, just wanted to get into a flow of
the game and then see how they were calling it
from there. And again that that goes to the back
end being so locked in with all the motions and
shifts and also filling in the run game when they
have to their touchdown. I think get four games. Where
(18:12):
did you see on this interception? Yeah, all of those
where you gotta do it was coming. Yeah, I mean
it's it's slay and he made a really good break
on the ball. I think everyone really stopped running once
he as soon as he caught it, we knew he
wasn't getting caught, so uh, just it's a really good
play by him. And again he's a guy who's been
doing that for a long time, and uh he's coming
up big for us right now. What's the biggest difference
(18:32):
with this team and this defense since the team flew
back from Vegas sect on five. I just think we're
executing it at high level right now. Guys are understanding
more of what exactly, Um, they're supposed to do in
certain coverages and things like that. And also I think
that you know, the our model it was just want
to get to the football. We want to get everyone
to the football. And uh so that comes with high energy,
(18:54):
high effort, and that all starts during the week. Um,
you know, we're flying around during practice just to make
sure that when Sunday comes we're ready to get to
the ball. And so when something does break down, we're
there to you know, get punches on it and make
plays on the balls in the air. T who was
the first half of the season link for you personally?
As you're kind of buying your time, what is in
the last four names man to you? Yeah? Um, you know,
(19:14):
going in it was you know, I had I had
a role in base packages and base personnels, and I was,
you know, just just happy to have a role. To
be honest with you, I wanted to do my job
the best that I could, um, and I knew that
if I did that that the defense would be better.
And um, you know, every week I'm ready for whatever
the coaches want to throw at me. And I think
everyone has that same mindset. So obviously, you know, I
wish i'd you know, could have kept going. But at
(19:37):
the end of the day, coaches are there for a
reason and we trust them and everything that we do,
so we're ready for whatever role. We have some questions
about your ability to play on third downs, I don't know,
you know, at the end of the day, I'm I
don't really look at it like that. I want to
just do my job the best that I can every
single week, and UM, I'm gonna give the best effort
and I'm gonna play as physical as I know how to. Um.
(19:59):
And but the kind of chips where they fall. It's
been a big thing all my life in terms of
being doubted and things like that, So that stuff has
never really phased me like that. Is it explained to
you why or it's just like you're playing, well, we're
gonna move you up. Yeah, I mean it's it's a
little bit of both. I think at the end of
the day, UM, you know, we're we're in a situation
where kind of been hot and I think, you know,
(20:20):
we're gonna keep rolling with that. But UM, I'm just
excited to have a really you know, big role with
this team, and I just want to do the best
that I can every single day. To keep getting better.
Love was made about not wanting to get home, so
I get yeah, it feels great. I mean, we just
we knew kind of We've heard the talk all week,
um and at the end of the day, we just
(20:41):
wanted to keep rolling off the momentum we've had in
the past couple of weeks, and um, I think just
coming in here playing really good football, playing physical football,
we knew that good things would happen. So it felt
really good to get one at home, and um, we
knew it was. It was good to hear you know,
Philly loud, and it was. It was fun out there today.
Appreciate you guys all right, heard from a handful of players, TJ.
(21:02):
Edwards being one of them. I said in the open
of the show. He has been a bright spot on
the defense to say the least, but I think he's
really at a disruption and he has allowed the secondary
to be successful and then the d line to trust
what's going on behind them as well. Yeah, no doubt
about it. And you can tell Jonathan Gannon trust t J.
Edwards out there, right. You know, you had guys out
there earlier that may have been on the field for
(21:22):
other reason. You're bringing Eric Wilson, You're paying him a
lot of money. He's going to get the opportunity to
be out there. The thing I love about TJ is
that he was ready whenever called upon, and he certainly
seems like a bright player out there on the field,
usually in the right place at the right time. And
that early interception really got the ball rolling for us
on offense. And I'm gonna break that play down a
little bit later with the RICO review. But I think
(21:44):
that's the thing about t J. Edwards is that he's
always kind of builds that run stuff, are always really
good downhill, and of course he is really instinctive, does
a great job defeating blocks. But when he doesn't get
enough credit for it or his instincts in coverage. He
was an extremely productive player playing in reverse at Wisconsin
Ton of pe Be used a ton of interceptions and
that continues to show up. We see it during practice,
(22:04):
we see it in training camp, we saw it in
the preseason. This was his first career interception here this season.
Nice athletic play by TJ. There absolutely and then obviously
Davion Taylor. He left the game with an injury, but
this week a huge storyline was the relationship of TJ.
Edwards and Davion Taylor and how well they are working
together because TJ. Edwards can really mentor a young guy
(22:26):
like Davion Taylor, and Davion Taylor is raw, but he
just throws himself out there and he's just learning and
learning and learning. And when t J. Edwards has success,
it only can benefit someone like Davion Taylor had no
doubt about it, and Davion gets an opportunity to work
with and learn from a student of the game. You know,
I get excited talking about both of these young men
because they're linebackers that are overachievers. When they get an opportunity,
(22:51):
they go out there and they make plays. Davion I
got an injured on a play, just like he got
Engineer right when we're an offensive lineman. Seemingly the players
over it, but he's still blocking and he winds up
blocking you into someone else and that's how he got
his knee banged around a day. Unfortunate for him, But
I like the way those two guys. Their play has actually,
(23:13):
I think has been infectious to the rest of the defense.
You know, when you get physical play at the linebacker position.
It just rubs off on the rest of those guys,
and Davion still with a bright future, a lot of
football left ahead of him that he still needs to
grow and learn about. But TJ. I think we're seeing
right before our eyes he's developing into a starting, like
(23:34):
an every week starting linebacker in his lead. Forget about
filling in here and there, He's developing into a starting
linebacker playing downhill in the box player, we're playing in reverse,
making play sideline to sideline. There's not a lot else.
So you're gonna ask your starting linebacker to do in
today's NFL. We have to talk about that secondary today. Obviously,
Darius Slay has been the star of the past few weeks.
(23:55):
We'll kind of impact besides the apparent, the obvious to
scoop and scores, the pick sixes that he had. What
kind of impact from your point of view, has he
had on this Eagles defense as a whole. Well, I
think just his veteran presence has allowed him to be
able to sit down. You know, we've talked to Slay
about this, he's mentioned it before himself. Rodney McCleod earning
(24:16):
the trust of Jonathan Gannon going in with the defensive
coordinator and saying, hey, he's maybe some things that could
help us out. I feel more comfortable plan in this position.
Can we figure out a way to incorporate it into
the defense to where it doesn't compromise the defense. I
think it took a little while for the coaches to
figure that part out, but over the last five or
six weeks, I think they've figured out a way to
(24:36):
play to Darek's strength at times while not compromising other
parts of the defense, allowing that to compliment slaves play
out there. And then let's face it, man, this guy
is all about playing with supreme confidence and it doesn't
take a lot to get him going, and so he
always believes he's gonna make the next play. That's the
best thing about him. But the fact, to cut you off,
(24:58):
we have Dallas Goddard at the podium. Doubt Dallas is
the rights is opening script each week? How important is
it for you to get that early rhythm? Yeah, it
always changes, you know, the first fifteen or whatever. Um,
(25:19):
you know, we look at the defense and you know,
think of ways to attack them. Um. It could be
you know, setting stuff up, or it could be just
seeing how they're gonna play different formations, different people. Um.
But yeah, you know, being able to get the ball
early just kind of get you in a rhythm. Um,
you know, in any anyway I can help the team,
you know, by doing that or blocking. You know, I'm
down for whatever point on Janelan's cutback, touchdown, run down
(25:44):
yet uh, you know I didn't really see it until um,
you know it was on the bass screen his cut.
It was incredible seeing on the big screen. I wish
I could have seen it in person, but you know,
I was on the backside, not really sure what was
going on, how it got all the way back there,
but you know I was I was just trying to
make sure the corner couldn't make the tackle on them.
Do you ever find yourself kind of just watching him
a little bit more than maybe you should, just because
(26:04):
of how I was about things he can do. Yeah,
it's kind of hard, you know, when when you're the
running routes or blocking to see all the things that
he does. You know, I definitely enjoy going back watching
the film, uh, seeing the amazing things that he does.
He can do. Um, but yeah, you know it's sometimes
you you're in scrambled drill. You see him take off
and you just just watch and be like, dang, this
(26:25):
man special line. Afterwards after that play, he was pretty high.
You know, I just kind of told him he's that dude. Uh.
You know, I thought it was pretty dope that someone
threw a jersey at him and he held it up.
That it was cool celebration, But now overall, it was
just it was a fun team win. Uh. You know,
everybody did their part, and you know that's that's how
we got to go every week for a few years now.
(26:47):
He hadn't been targeted of all year. To make that
play in that situation, gets some yards after the catch.
What does that say about him that he was he
was ready? Yeah, that's big. Uh. You know j J
knows his role on the team and he does an
excellent job at it. You know, it's awesome to see
his hard work payoff being able to get that catch.
You know, as a wide receiver, you love that. And
you know he was able to run for twenty thirty
(27:08):
yards whatever it was. You know, that was a big
play in the game. Uh. You know, the couple dribs
before that, we kind of stalled out. But for him
to do that flip the field, get us in a
good position. You know, really happy for him and you
know his hard works paying off. Was last month on
the flight home from Vegas. Did you see this coming? Uh? Yeah,
I think so. You know all those times I was saying,
(27:29):
you know, this team's close, like we're really close, you know,
and I think we're just showing it. You know, we're
fixing the little things that everybody was so concerned about
early on, and you know now we're kind of on
a roll and we just got to get ready to
get back to work on Wednesday, Thursday and get ready
for next week. What's the biggest difference. You know, everybody's
just just taking that next step. Everybody's making sure they
(27:50):
know their assignments, they're finishing everything, and you know, there's
just not little things that are hurting us, whether it's
penalties or you know, just miss assignment, not getting off
a blot quick enough, things like that. We've been able
to clean it up and you know, Sirianni focuses on
the little details and it's definitely been paying off the
run game bit during that stretch, especially today against you know,
a really good defense. Yeah, you know, we kind of
(28:11):
came in there, and you know, we said that they're
gonna have to match our physicality and its so we
went out there with a chip on our shoulder knowing
that they were the number one defense run defense in
the league. And you know, like I've said before, we
got an incredible old line that you know, just when
they get on their tracks, they start smashing stacks and
you know it's really fun to watch. The running backs
did a great job hitting those holes. And you know,
(28:32):
having a presence like Jaalen out there just helps everything. Help.
You know, felt jealing down in the passing game. Say
that one one time to say how much has to
run the running game? Shape Jayalen in the passing and
made him made him better in the passing game. Yeah.
You know, anytime you can run the ball like that,
the linebackers have to respect it. Um. You know, the
(28:53):
d line has to respect that. They can't just straight
rush up the field. And you know when we can
get them to step up. And he's been making credible
throws and you can see it, uh each week in practice,
you know, just his time, he's getting better. His balls
just unbelievable. I mean, this whole week practice throwing it.
You know, it was like I was looking at him
like you got a golden arm right now this you're
doaught and stuff, and you know it carried over to
(29:15):
the game and you know, if he keeps playing the
way he is, we're gonna be real good signer contract
like that. Um, you know, not really, Uh, there's a
little weight off the shoulder. I just get to play free.
But you know, I kind of tack attack the same
way every day. You know, just go out there, work,
do my job to the best of my abilities, and
uh do anything I can to help this team get wins.
(29:37):
I'll work kind of match djop and coverage every what
was it like knowing way uses yeahlco. Melcolme's a great player,
you know when he was here for my first two years,
learned a lot from him, but gotta get got a
lot better just going against him every day. UM. So
it's a really cool scene. A guy you know that
you spent some time with that has helps you develop
(29:58):
into the player you are U. You know, and we
had a lot of good battles out there. It was
fun whether I was running routes on him or blocking him,
you know, I mean, obviously He's a tremendous player. I've
been doing this for a very long time at a
high level. Um So, you know, just credit to him,
and it was fun playing against him. They're finally gonna
value your dinner. Huh. You know, I think I think
he's due tonight. I think I'm gonna let him treat me.
(30:19):
You know, I've been doing it. I had to do
it one day before, So now it's his turn. What
is your perspective on him getting that that second contract? Uh,
you know, super happy for him. Obviously, he's put in
a lot of work. He's he's been a big part
of this team since he got here as a rookie
and you know, whatever role they put him in sometimes
it was safety, corner and nickel. You know, he's he's
been able to play everywhere and done a good job
(30:39):
at it. Um So for him to get credited with
you know, the money that he did, uh, you know,
he's he's an incredible person, incredible player, and you know,
I'm really glad I got to spend another three years
with him. That catching had near the red zone there
where he came up with him one hand, Yeah, um,
so I just inside release deep stick route basically, Um,
(31:00):
you know, and when I chopped chopped at the top
to break out, I kind of felt the linebacker coming
to press, so I knew I had to go and
attack it, and you know, he he almost made a
really good play on it, but it stuck to my
fingers and you know, it was really cool. Was it
was one of my favorite catches I've had in a while. Um,
So yeah, it was you know, just jail and trusting
in me and me gonna get it. Thanks' sister. Go ahead.
(32:10):
A lot of pressure on you guys with this one,
so it's gotta be your favorite player. So you're not
asking first, all right, fire, what think your takeaways from
this game? All right? Yeah? I think it was a
good physical game. Um. That's something that we really wanted
(32:31):
to do is be physical in this game. I thought
our guys really really showed that. And uh, and I
just continue to see you. You know, we've told you
guys have asked me a little bit about identity, and
I can just share you with you what we talked
about our team. And I don't think it's about plays
you call or defense as you call our special teams
calls you call. Um. It was about us. Our our
team is close. It's a close knit group of guys
(32:53):
that connect and uh, you know, it's a physical group
of guys, and it's a guys. It's guys that leave
everything out there on the field. And so that's what
we really talked about last night, because you know, you
guys have asked me a couple of times about identity,
and what I just wanted to say to them is like, hey,
our identity it's these three things that I just kind
of mentioned right there. And so that was really on
display today. So good playing together against you know, the
(33:16):
number one ranked run defense. You can decide whether you
want to try to run through them or do something different.
Why was it that you thought that you guys could
run on them? I think j Jalen is a special
player that forces defenses. Is a play different um, you know.
And so you know, you look at you look at
the tape and again I think I told you guys
(33:37):
earlier in the week that you know, you look at
the statue, look at where they are, you look at
their defense, but you also want to do what you
do well. And so you know, we know we've been
running the ball well and uh, and it's just it's
a little different when Jalen's in there, and so you know,
you try to look at some teams that they've played
that are are similar to that. Um, but you want
to make them stop at what you do well first,
(33:59):
and that definitely what we our goal was going out
there well. Obviously, I think something you want to do
as a running game lend itself to that when you're
able to do There are different ways to be physical.
I don't want to make it sound like you can
only be physical passing the ball or you can only
be physical or part of me running the ball, because
there's different ways to do that, because receivers can be
physical and um, you know, the tight ends can be physical,
(34:22):
and the backs can be physical. You know when you're
when you're passing it. So you know, it's just the
style of play. Uh, you know, I think we just
got I just think we have tough guys on this team,
and and that's important. I think when you again I've
talked about this before with you guys that when you
get on when you get on the bus to come
to the game, I know, I'm just I'm just kind
of speaking in the terms of bus. We didn't take
(34:42):
a bus here, But when you get on the bus
to go to the game, you don't ever want to
You never want to go to that game without your
guys that are tough. And I just feel like that's
a common denominator of a lot of the guys on
this football team. We got tough, gritty guys, and that's
gonna win you a lot of football games. That's gonna
help you win a lot of football games throughout and
so U that's just something when you're physical and when
you're tough. Um, that's just something throughout the history of
(35:04):
football that has shown to help you win games and
those and that's my experience with players. It's like the
guys that I that I'm like, man, this is one
of my favorite guys I've ever coach. That common denominator
is that they're tough and they're nasty and they're physical.
Funnel inside to five there and then another funnel that
was one of dead and progress. But what do you
say to him? And what's your approach when running backs
(35:26):
shoot dog mentality? Like you say to a corner if
they get beat, or if you say to a right
wide receiver if they drop a pass, or if you
say to a player if he jumps off sides right
dog mentality, Uh, move on, next play, next, play, next
play if you dwell on And we wanted to show
him confidence too. I think Miles had a good game.
Would he end up with ninety four? Yeah, Miles had
(35:47):
a good game. He ran the ball hard, he ran
the ball well, and he ran the ball well in
a time where we really needed it. M and so
it is it was just hey, forget that, play next, play,
next play. And I think that means a lot to
guys when you show the confidence in him, UM. And
then you also could you you correct what you know
what's going on and you say, hey, when you get
into traffic what we talk about, we call this a
class pand that you put that class pand on in.
(36:09):
So that's what we talked about, UM, and showed trusting
him and belief in him. And I know that will
that will be that will be rewarding going forward with
milesformances j Wincidence or is something to do with him?
He's really he is really playing good. Um. I think
our defense as a whole is playing good. And I
(36:30):
don't want to just single anybody out because I think
they're all playing good. It's always starts up front. TJ
brings a physicalness, physicality what I don't know how did
I say that? All Right, you guys got me? Um
that Um that really that really is contagious. And he
continues to come after the ball. I mean you saw
the you saw the one play on the swing pass
(36:51):
out there where the guy felt TJ coming and uh,
you know, and then he ended up getting a Uh
I think he dropped the ball. But TJ just has
that physical physicality and uh, he's just really playing good
football right now. And um, you know he's a good
communicator with the defense and talking to everybody and so, um,
he's playing really good football. And and sure you know
(37:14):
you know those guys from Wisconsin, those that guy that
played as a Badger, you know those My experience with
those guys are they're tough and they're nasty and they
and they can play physical ball. And so um, I'm
sure glad he's playing, uh, playing the role he's playing
right now. That twenty four yard touchdown by the guy
everything like demoralizing. Do you think that? Yeah? I think
(37:38):
in that scenario too, like just with what the score
was and the way it was going. Um, you know,
I got too conservative. I'll say that right now, say
that I got a little bit too conservative with the
play calling. Uh that kind of allowed them to work
their way back into the game, you know, And so
that that's on me. Um. But you know, Jalen made
a huge play and I also liked to you know,
and so and they had the guy made the guy
(38:00):
read the play pretty well and he made a great move.
It was awesome. I mean, it was a it was
a great individual play by Jalen. UM. I'd also like
to recognize uh JJ's play that he made UM in
a in a critical time, right because I think everybody
in the stadium felt, you know, and then you guys
probably felt the UM it kind of slipping a little
(38:21):
bit right. They were coming back into the game and
we needed it was a twenty three yard twenty six
yard game. I don't know what it was, UM, but
a big time play by a guy that that's that's
had a tough week, UM And I don't want to
give his personal information out, so I'm not going to,
but he's had a tough week and for him to
go out and make the type of play that he
made right there, it was like I love JJ. I
(38:43):
think he embodies the toughness of this city and this
football team. Like he's been asked to do things that um,
you know that he hasn't been asked to do before.
He's been asked to be a special teams guy. UM
that that really is gritty and tough. And because he
has that in his body, and he's been has to
be our blocking type of receiver, UM in critical, critical time.
(39:05):
So it's great to reward him with a catch in
that scenario. UM. And you know, I'm just so happy
for him that he made that type of play and
help kind of stop the bleeding in that in that
drive and make a big play to help us kind
of put that game away. UM. You know, I don't. Well,
we'll vote. We always vote for a player of the game.
We always vote for a play of the game. That
(39:25):
for sure. I guess I got the trump card because
I'm the head coach. So that will be the play.
That's that's gonna be a play of the game. I'll
tell Shane that I'm away home yet. The way you're
describing your team today as far as the toughness the physicality,
is that the way you would have described them after
seven games, and if if not, what made that change
(39:50):
do you think? I think these guys have always had
that physicality and toughness and so um and yeah, I'd
like to say that I've seen that from them the
entire time through, whether that was the joint practices with
the different teams that we had joint practices with, or
the training camp practices, or the practices that we've had
or games that we've had, I've known we've had tough
guys and so um. Uh, so I've known that. I
(40:14):
think I've known that all the way through. To answer
your question, Okay, all right, I think, um, what was
your vantage point of Dallas's a fingertip catch? And then
you know, although you guys don't have to pass that much,
how effective we see in the past. You're talking about
the third down catch where the guy kind of got
his hand in yeah before the one yard touchdown. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah,
(40:37):
that was a third down Um. I thought that was
a that was a phenomenal stronghand catch. Um and a
lot of tribute to Dallas that he works on that
catch every day. Jason Jason Michael, our tight end coach,
throws him that ball. Um where he's got to catch
that ball like this, um and the and then the
rich rich Richard Rodgers is always with him pulling that
(40:58):
ball out. That's a catch we work every day because
if you try to catch that ball right here with
strong hands, with him ripping through there, and and your
first time trying to catch that is on Sunday, it's
gonna come out. And so we do that's that's that's
a catch we do with the receivers and the tight
ends and the running backs every single day and are
what we call our catch circuit. It's eighty five catches.
(41:19):
I'll fill you guys in on it at some point,
but it's eighty five catches different catches that don't happen
a lot um And so Dallas does that religiously. He
does that not only in walks through, but he gets
eighty five times too because he gets the He also
gets that in team or in practice as well as well.
So he's getting twenty of those catches a week um
(41:40):
or a part of me a day. I love the
That's why I love about this game. Like those things
that you do just religiously over and over and over again,
and when they come up in that scenario. You're like, oh,
thank god, we've done that, and we've we've wrapped that
in Dallas. Right, All the credit goes to Dallas in
the first place, just because he's got wrong hands in
the first place. But they work effortlessly at that, you know,
(42:04):
they are part of me. They just they just relentlessly
at that. Um. And they just keep working thanks both,
all right. Uh and they just keep working at over
and over and over again. And that's and that's who
Dallas is. He's a he's a hard worker and um,
you know. And so it was good to be able
to see that happen. And that's just a good example
to show every other receiver and tight end like, hey,
(42:25):
I don't know when this play is gonna come up,
but when it does, it might be for a big
third down. UM. And he made another play like that
where we had an illegal man down field UM on
that play. He played me another play like that in
the game. So uh, yeah, Dallas is just he saw
how strong he was with the football to day, and
I thought he played a very solid game. All yeah,
(42:45):
I'll get I'll get you. Yeah. One more, going back
to j j Abriel Plick, that play he go back
all the way back to Week one in Atlanta. I
remember at some point we're gonna have to do that
and try and bus certain repard and with cat. Was
that play actually called by you and the hut? Was
that channel and sort of progress. It's part of the
(43:07):
red I mean, it's part of the read of what happened.
I don't want to divulge too much information on that play, um,
because you know it's been a good play for us,
but you know it's part Yeah, it can happen on
that play, and it did in that scenario. So, uh,
Jalen made a great play with what the defense gave us.
U JJ got his hands on the ball and went
from there. We still Jim allowed to mixing it up
a little bit out there. Do you enjoy that, Washington
(43:28):
within the rules? Yeah? Obviously. Um. You know, I think
when you see that play, you know, it's just two
guys going really hard. Ninety two and him were going
really hard on the play. And that's football, um, And
so you know, and that happens in football. Uh, you know,
emotions run high in football, and the emotions by both guys. Again,
you always want your guys to play within the rules
of of the of the way, you know, with what
(43:50):
the rules are and so um and so that obviously
no flag was thrown right there. It was good physical
play both guys. We were working hard and uh and
yeah and uh just excited the way he played in
this game, because you know, you don't you don't run
for a mount of yards, you do if without good
play from your your left tackle. All right, all right,
so we got a couple of guys ready to go.
(44:23):
No Dallas, Well, I think it's a contract stuff more
does it mean to be signed at this point with
Drew four? Uh? I mean I'm excited. This is everyone,
(44:45):
I mean, everyone that plays the didn't Field dream and
you know, I'm just happy it's here with Philly. I
was drafted here and you know it means a lot
to sign me back and being there show me how
much you know, how much there committed to me. And
you know, being abre to be here for the next
to two thousand and twenty four and you know it's
gonna be fun. I mean, I got got everything that
(45:06):
I want and you know I'm gonna be out here.
I'm gonna play hard for the team, the city, and
you know I'm gonna shouted to just to be here
feeling different today because of it. Uh No, it really
haven't hit me yet. Uh I did it yesterday, but
I was really focused on today. So you know, that's
the main goal, is to keep winning each week. So
you know, to day after this, I definitely affiliate, didn't
(45:28):
You know we're gonna have some fun. TJ is You know,
I knew t J since you got here, and I
always scream out TJ as soon as I see him. Man,
you know, he's he's a motor. I mean, he's going um,
he makes plays, he make big plays, and you know,
I'm happy for t J. I'm proud to TJ. And
you know, hopefully TJ, you know, could be here all
(45:50):
as well. But you know, TJ is everything. He runs
the defense in middle linebacker spot, and you know, every
time I go out there, he's talking to me. He's
let me know, I got you inside on this one.
All right, that's cool. I'm gonna be here right here
for you. All right, cool, I got you. So you know,
we're always communicating, and you know you're making big plays.
And I'm proud of watching Jailing from from the side.
(46:12):
I'll always watch Jailing I'm looking at the gym try
and when I seen him make that move, I was like,
oh snap, I'm looking for the trainer so I can
grab some tape to you know, help that kid ankles.
But but I mean, even if that was me out there,
I probably would have been he called it to somebody
else to take me up. So you know, he's definitely dynamic,
and you know one is always a baller and it's
(46:35):
exciting to watch him play. What you look like you
broke up the past, the hand wrong her hand or
something happened. Yeah, that's a big body right there. I
mean I ran into him like I'm about to go
up hot this time. I'm about to try to make
a big hit. She was like, I said, oh shit,
I couldn't feel like hard started going left it right
without my permission. So after that, I was like, yeah,
(46:59):
I gotta take a little ray, I gotta go out
the field for a second. But I'm good, I'm allifying,
and you know I was able to come back and
finish playing. I think it's spoken about toughness and physicality.
Are those characteristics that you think this team has had
all along? Or are he's showing it more in recent yeah.
I mean we had it all along. I mean it's
just we had to just get all the little details
(47:19):
down and the fundamentals, make sure, you know, pay atention
to those and you know, master those, and you know
it would come a long way. So we battled through adversity. Uh,
you know, we're we're a tough team, man. You know,
like you said, let you us hain't that's the only
thing that really matters, and that's being tough. And you know,
going out competing eight and every single play seeing that
your your entire draft class starting stunning, and he takes
pride and in fact that you guys, Oh yeah, definitely.
(47:41):
I mean we got in here, we got in here
and um we came in and we all said we
just gonna work, you know, work hard as well. So
you know, I'm proud of Jordan. Um, he definitely deserves it.
I mean never played the football slapping and he coming
here and you know, he's one of the best tackles
I've seen and big and strong. I mean I think
I actually seen the play. I don't know if that
was him were Lane, but one of them got I
(48:02):
think that it was him. Maybe he pushed him due
with one arm but um, and then you know, sweating
sweaty come out here, and you know he's crazy as
then I've ever seen. He's fast, strong, powerful, physical, And
then you know me, I came in and you know,
just came in and put my best foot for it
down and you know, just getting better each and every
single day. Then you got Gotti, uh making one hand
(48:22):
catches with with three fingers, So I guess that's pretty
cool too. But you know, we're pretty good class and
that's pretty nice interception pro touchot so I gets thirty play. Yeah,
I was on the other side of the field, but
I was able to see actually to play a little
(48:42):
bit on the jumbo trying after and Slay is really
good at the top of the route and you know
he's working at every every single day. And he um,
he broke before the guy even broken. You know, he
caught it and he took it to the house. And
I didn't know he was at I didn't know. I
thought he was a little bit old, but I guess
he's still twenty one. He jumped up on top of
that that link leap real pretty pretty cool, So you
(49:03):
know it's pretty nice for real man. You know, we'll
be watching watching that one in film and laughing about it.
It's a coincidence that, you want the Dallas got locked
up in the same way cars. That's something the team
was trying to coordinate. You were hoping for and what
does it mean that that happened? But yeah, I mean
I don't know. I was Dallas dealing with it with
(49:23):
his agent and I was, you know, dealing with with
my agent, and you know, we just wanted to make
sure everything was right and read upon right, and you know,
just so happening that we're living in the same house,
which is pretty cool. And you know, he gets signed
and did I get signed the next day? And you know,
to be honest, that's really really a big, big moment
for us, you know, in that household, and you know,
(49:44):
it's pretty cool to see coming back home and you know,
see Dallas richard than he ever been. So you know,
I look at that shout out the rodway, so you know,
I look at Dallas, but he's still buying dinner. I
don't care because you know, he's still he still got
a lot. Yes, all right, thanks a little. The last
(50:21):
few weeks like for you watching as as the team,
you know, finally started to really commention running the ball
while you were out. Um it was good. Uh be honest, Um,
y'all should know me by now. Y'all ain't gonna get
me with these these questions. But I'm a team guy. Um.
I was more excited uh seeing Jordan and Boston get
out there and you know, really do what they do. Um.
(50:42):
The way the season started was unfortunate for them, but um,
with me being out allowed doing to show what they
can do. And you know now now we're running the show,
all three of us. She got a lot of factiveness.
Probably the football you have to want to fumble, and
the other one uh kind of got belottle Cat. It's
not just from being out while I'll get used to
the contact. Yeah, I mean, it's just something I'm not
(51:04):
supposed to do. You know, my job is to protect
the football, and I failed to do that. Uh. I'm
not gonna sit here and make an excuses. Um. Not
gonna have it again. Though. Um, I'm back back active
and getting in the group. So UM, I'm gonna keep
this thing going and move forward. The fumble Nick Heady
back out there a game. Does that mean a lot
to you? Yeah? Absolutely, Just just I mean, everybody told
(51:25):
me that they trust me with the ball in my hand.
So um, just uh, all I can say is I
appreciate that, you know, just keeping my confidence going and
um throwing me back into Joan's impact on the on
the running game overall. Uh, it's a big impact. You know.
It's it's it's it's opening the holes up a lot
for all of us, you know, especially Join. You know,
(51:47):
Jordan played a heck of a game before he got hurt.
But um, having Jalen makes makes it ten time easier.
But you really got to get a credit to the
old line. Did you get to see his touchdown run? Yeah,
yeah I did. I was too busy trying to block
somebody backside us keep them from touching them. But um,
but now I love that, man. I love how how
complimentary we're playing. You know, everybody's getting their touches and
(52:09):
you know we're next thing, you know, we're moving down
the field and next thing you know, we're in the
end zone. So that's that's all I really care about.
And that's that's what I love about this team right now.
Three weeks we did not get a chance to talk
to you. We spoke a lot about formula for this team.
Do you think what you guys have found is a
formula for this offense to be successful? Absolutely? Um, I
think running the ball and two we can't. I think
(52:30):
that's that's that's the way that's things is moving right now.
And then it's gonna open up the ring game, I
mean the passing game, you know for guys like Dallas
and DeVante, who's who's our guy catching the ball right now?
But also gotta get the ball to Jalen and and
and Quaz and you know, and we got three running
backs back there that can I can tote it too.
So it's it's all around, uh, complimenting football. And I
(52:53):
love it when you're altum so back and watch other
guys pick up stuff or different because they're out the
same time back of you. No, it's it's the same.
You know, we all run in the same place. Um,
just seeing with when they come to the silind they're
expecting us to you know, giving feedback, you know, not
even just from coach, but from like Saya Boston's and
from me and Joyan just to see what we see.
(53:13):
And he goes back after out there and corrected and
you know, like I said, two hundred and forty four
rushing yards on the ground. Give all the credit to
the old line. You know that these last couple of
games they've been playing Havard game. Did you pick up
anything watching for three weeks? Uh? Without the round games?
Was um, just run behind them big boys wats Vegas?
(53:35):
What was initially going through your mind? Like you so
the talbre and was initially um, you know it's you
don't want to get hurt. Um. And the start that
I had UM during that game was just you know,
pretty frustrating. Um started off good, I think, real good
to something that's that's real good right now? You know that,
I think that was the start of it. And it
(53:57):
was just frushtrating, you know, getting knocked out that game
and just no and that I put my bluss w
and tiars into this game, and I want to be
out there every stepping away with this team. And I
just like where we're at right now. I'm happy to
be get back out there, happy to be activated, and UM,
I'm willing to do whatever it takes to you know,
get this stretch going and one game at a time
and you know, playoffs is coming up to even like
(54:22):
his team started with the growing pains or the coaching
staff and all those system Where you are right now,
how satisfying as this one as a team? I repeat
that one more time? Sorry more. This team started for
the coaching staff of the system and the growing pains
that come with that. Where you are right now having
one for your last five, how satisfying this this is
a run for this team. Um, it's very satisfying. Just
(54:43):
because coach Priests is the same things. He doesn't change nothing. Um,
he's preaching the same things and we're going and we're
following the same stuff that he's talking about, and it's
we can see it's paying off. Honestly, um, Lee taking
one week at a time, just getting better than the
last week wins or losses. UM, I know we want
two in a row, but we're still gonna look at
(55:04):
this stuff and get better from from this tape and
you know, move on. UM. But I love where Rat,
Honestly love Rat. One of the big conversations outside the
building is whether jail And is the the answer quarterback
long term? What's what's the view of him inside what's
the view of inside the building? Um? That's my guy, man. Uh,
(55:26):
you know you can kind of sense it. On the field.
You know, he's a field general. He likes to control things.
It's just natural for him. Um. He doesn't force anything.
Um he has that natural that natural um leader leadership type.
I can't really explain it, but I love it. I
love everything about him. I love how he how he
(55:46):
carries himself, and we just follow right behind him. Um.
He has a lot of respect throughout the building and Guff,
we got a lot of respect out of me. Um.
I trust him, he trust me. And yeah, that's all
I could really say. I love I love a guy
he's even killed. How what what's the most excited you've
ever seen him? Um, his entrance, his his his individual interest,
(56:08):
that's probably the most as we see him. And when
he scores. That's about it. You said the playoffs are
coming to you think that's a what's the bay for
this tea to deal with right now? Um? Not, I'm mad.
I kind of said that. We're not really thinking about it.
But it's just the fact that all these last couple
of these last games or all division, and we know
if we win, we win them all, we're gonna be
(56:29):
in the playoffs. So and that's that's not gonna leave
on burying, but just gonna take it one game at
a time. A formula is, it's still work in progress. UM,
I know we're I could say we're young, and I
think everything is the working probably goods, and I don't
think we're we want to be. We're satisfied. We're we're
at right now. Definitely definitely not satisfied we're we're at
(56:49):
right now, But we're gonna keep grinding and keep getting
better than chilling, chilling. You were talking to Malcolm after
(57:29):
the game. Did he have some complimentary things to say?
What was kind of the extent of that he played
here for a while. He did play for a while. Um,
I just remember last year, even my first start, um,
my first start on the words he had for me, um,
And I think, um, coming from a guy that's played
here and I won the super Bowl here and been
a part of great things here, I appreciate what he
(57:51):
said last year and I mean had nothing but that
same love and respect for him me and just encouraged
me to continue to continue to keep balling, continue to
keep going and I can't continue to you know, be me.
So I appreciate that from him. Did you get a
look at your sun rodding in the movie put on
the guy in the open field. No I didn't. I didn't. Um,
(58:15):
No I didn't there what was the po was that move?
What led to it? Um? I just really just I
just just made a play. Um, you know, it's it's
I look at it as a situation in the game.
You know, we obviously had drives. I'm kind of frustrated.
I'm really frustrated from the drives that we didn't score
in the red zone that we should have. We had
(58:36):
a few mental errors, UM, a few things that we
could have controlled that did not go. UM. We could
have controlled and it didn't happen to we didn't execute. Um.
And then it allowed them to come back into the game.
We kept giving them good feel position um, and they
scored and UM, it shouldn't even been that way. But nonetheless,
I just think there's so much to learn from this game. Um.
(58:58):
There's a lot of good to take away from the
game too. So yeah, JJ hasn't got the target all
year and told hey, UM, what gave me the confidence
to go to him in that big spot I've had
I've always had a lot of confidence and everybody to
anybody who's out there on the field. UM, you know,
targeting whoever, whoever it is, UM, believing everybody. UM, And
(59:19):
that's what it is. And for JJ to come into
the to the game in a situation like that, in
a situation where we need to get the first down,
UM to kind of you know, essentially take that out
of the ball and UM keep it rolling. I mean
that's a big time played by him. UM. And where
boss security is a premium in four minute offense and
in a situation like that end of the game, he
(59:41):
did what he was supposed to do. He did his job,
so UM, a lot of it. How do you like,
what's your initial reaction towards your lambs? What was on
through wanting to happen? I mean, hit throw it to me?
I mean I didn't know. I didn't realize. I think
he threw a marker with it. UM. You know, I don't.
(01:00:04):
I don't know how to find his work. They you know,
they'll get you. But UM, I didn't see the mark
until I walked away. UM, if there was one. UM,
But I mean it's I don't know, it's it's enthusiasms
in front of fans. UM. The love from the fans,
you know, um, and didn't throw my jersey out there.
So I was just I was in a different mode
when I scored that testdown because it was just something
(01:00:25):
that we needed to do for the team. So I
just held it up. A couple of guys up said
that now you guys are gonna keep running the ball
until the other team crews taking to stop it. You
guys just ran from turning of yards and it's the
top ranked defense and other top defense a week before.
I mean, how can you see how demoralizing it compete
or defense? When you guys r um that that you
(01:00:49):
know they were they were. I mean, we're just gonna
gonna We're gonna continue to attack, continue to you know,
continue to play our game. UM. And I think I
think this, UM. I've always been asked about the identity
of this football team early on in the season. Everybody's
asking me the question. UM, whether I answered it or
(01:01:09):
I didn't answer it. UM, I think this. I think
identity is not being able to run the ball, or
we're a running team, we're a passing team, we're a
team that doesn't give a biggest loss of plays. Um,
That's not what identity is. Identity is a mentality. UM.
It's a mentality. It's an approach. UM. It's the detail
you put in day in and day out throughout the week. UM.
(01:01:31):
It's being physical, it's wanting it, it's effort, it's all
of those things. UM. And I think that's what we
want to be. That's what that's what we're growing to,
and that's what we're evolving to. It's being a team
that controls what we can. UM. And we know when
we control what we can, we're we're dying good football team. UM.
And it took some growth. UM, It's took a lot UM,
(01:01:53):
and we're still evolving. We're still growing, we're still learning
from a lot of different things. But we just want
to continue to control the controllables. UM. Continue to connect
with one another, know that everybody has each other's backs
out there on the field, UM, and continue to move
forward with that mentality of renters do every day. UM.
That's that's that's the identity this football team. Physicalities. You
get physicality. I know you don't want to think hits
(01:02:15):
out there, but when you do and you pop right
back up, do you feel that that can galvanize the
offense and the rest of the team. UM, I don't
really really think about it that way. UM, just kind
of looking for the next play. UM, I never really
thought about that. I want to back to, uh to
Malcolm's comments last year and memory serves he said that
this can be a tough place to play, but you're
(01:02:37):
you're built for UM. Reflecting back on the past year,
you know, how do you how do you view it
through that content? UM? I think I mean he said it. UM,
I don't he said it. UM, built for it. Some
of those the way you guys are leaning on the
offensive line with the running game. How important was it
(01:02:58):
when Lane came back and the comment knew that you
have with that Lineuh, you know we got we got
great tackles, got great tackles, we got freaks out there
on the edge. UM. And teams know that they're they're
good players. Teams know we have a great center. UM.
It's had a lot of experience, and we got young
guys that can play guard at a very high level. UM.
(01:03:19):
But I think Lane, UM, Lane is. Lane has done
great things for a very long time. UM. And the
way Lane works, UH, the effort, the toughness he has UM.
Even last year trying to play on his ankle injury. Um,
you know, we got a lot of spear for Lane.
Um and everything he's he's been able to overcome. And
Um he's been he's been great for the team. Andrew
(01:03:40):
Something's losses in the first two months, he kept saying
to us that he thought this team was close. Um,
is this what you had in mind? What's been happening
these these past people weeks? Did Julie envision this or
just a little different than you thought? Enough is never
enough for me. So what's the next step? What is
the growth that you guys need to make to get
even better? The same thing I've been saying, Um, slow
(01:04:01):
and steady wins the race. Continue to learn every day,
daily deposits every day, buying into that. That's something that
we have bought into. I'm believing that and you know,
just just deposited it every day, going attack every day
and learn from everything we do. I'm good, better and different,
and just grow from it. Like Russian touchdown looked like
people to arrive along with you and see if you
(01:04:23):
got in. Did you feel you got in? And you know,
take us through that play and trying to get you
out of the gonna watch them. Yeah, I thought I
got in. Um, you know sometimes sometimes it's hard for
me to celebrate or you know, do all these different
things after we scored touchdowns, because I've had like eight
of them called back this year. Um, so a little
(01:04:43):
hesitant sometimes, But um, fifty seas came down and he was,
you know, we joked about it after the play. You know,
he was he was rolling. He you know, one rolling
enough We're back to sports. Great Russian dutsdows was Russell
Wilson twenty twelve. Is that hold any significance to you? Um,
(01:05:04):
I like winning. That's that's the most significant thing we'll
get out of the day for me. Um. We came
in the day, we played hard. Um, we had some
ups and downs in the football game. But um, in
the end we were victorious and we won. And um,
it'd be a lot to learn from from this game.
We just want to continue to you know, move forward
and grow from it. That was quarterback Jalen Hurts. This
(01:05:30):
offense averaging thirty four and a half points per game
in the past four weeks. Jalen Hurts obviously a huge
reason for that. Yeah, no doubt about it. And while
not trying to take anything away from his ability to
throw the ball, because we certainly know he can do that.
But the true dangerous weapon part of this offense has
been his running game being added to the running backs.
(01:05:52):
And so once the coach is incorporated QB runs into
this offense, I think it's just made the offense that
much more danger It makes it that much more difficult
for opposing defenses to sort of key in on the
running game because you can't account for a quarterback when
you're trying to figure out how many guys do you
put in the box so that you can't stop the
(01:06:13):
running game. And I think the big thing to remember
when talking about Jalen Hurts as a young quarterback is
that it's not always going to be pretty as a passer, right,
And so when you have these other elements in the
offense that can lift him up, and then you're going
to have the opportunities where he's going to lift everybody
else up, whether it's like we saw last week with
his arm or today with his legs. That's all a
part of the development of a young quarterback. All right, Well,
(01:06:35):
let's flip things over to the defensive side of the ball.
Earlier today, Fran was able to break down t J.
Edwards first quarter interception on this week's Freak Overview. So
this week here on the Rico Review, I wanted to
take a look back at one of two Eagles interceptions
in the first half by this defense. Obviously an outstanding
play just before halftime by Darius Slay, the second pick
(01:06:57):
six of his career, the third defensive touch down for
big play Sleigh here in twenty twenty one. But I
actually want to go back to the first interception, and
that's the one by t J. Edwards when this is
a tie game zero zero t J Awards makes it
great play Here in coverage, you're gonna take a look
at exactly how that play happened. First off, we're gonna
take a look at the defensive play call. You're gonna
see the Eagles here in a form of cover three
(01:07:20):
zone where you're gonna have one, two, three, four underneath
zone defenders. All right, So obviously you want to take
a look here at t J. Edwards. He's the one
that's making this interception. If we take a look at
what New Orleans is doing on this play, they're gonna
go hard play action to the offensive left. They're gonna
try and get the linebackers the other second level defenders
all flowing that way so that they can run a
(01:07:41):
play action pass concept the opposite direction. So you can see,
you're gonna have two routes running to the intermediate and
the short area of the field. This is a basic
three level stretch concept. You're trying to put t J.
Edwards in Avante Maddox in a bind here. If you're
the offense, you're trying to throw the multiple route their
direction and then let the back to side where he's
gonna throw. Hopefully for him, he's gonna have this intermediate
(01:08:04):
route open behind the linebacker, so we can let this role.
I want you to watch t J. Aedwards here on
this play as he's going to attack the line of scrimmage.
Once he keys that it's passed, he now gets back
into his responsibility and underneath his own coverage makes a
diving interception. This throw supposed to go a little bit
higher there, but we've seen t J. Edwards make this
play time and time and time again in the middle
(01:08:26):
of the field. A lot of the time it's been
in practice. We've seen him make these plays in preseason games.
This one a huge one here. Obviously a regular season
interception there for TJ awards helps set up the Eagles
first touchdown of the game, gets the offense great field
position TJ awards. Not just making plays against the run,
This one, a big play against the past, gets the
Eagles their first touchdown of the game on offense. Now
(01:08:51):
is your chance to vote for the Toyota Player of
the Week. Go to Philadelphia Eagles dot com slash Toyota
Player of the Week to cast your vote and get
a chance at a brand new Toyota. All right, fellas,
here we go. First up, we just talked about him,
linebacker t J. Edwards ten total tackles on the day
at tackle for loss and of course the I N T.
(01:09:11):
Next up, we talked about that running game here he
is Jordan Howard, ten catches, attempts sixty three yards. He
put on a show today and of course Darius Slay.
We can't forget his interception that pick six to the house.
What do you think our three nominees? You guys? All right,
you guys think I'm gonna go defense, Like I knew
(01:09:32):
how many differ, But I'm not. I'm gonna go with
Jordan Howard this all right, Dan, he won't win, but
I'll choose. I'll go with Big Play Sleigh. Yeah, I
think I'm a Big Play Slay. That interception was huge
going into the locker room, huge momentum shift. Really kind
of made this this game seem out of reach at
that point in the game. Obviously, New Orleans comes back
(01:09:54):
and makes it closer in the end. But let's give
some love to Big Play Slay. All right. Well, however,
to Philadelphia Eagles dot com and cast your vote. Those fans,
there's a new way for you to get a recap
of each game. Check out our voice app on Alexa
and Google devices. For more info, go to Philadelphia Eagles
dot com slash Voice. All right, we're gonna keep things
rolling here. Moving on to next week and this week's
(01:10:14):
Jamison Nightcap. Eagles are hitting the road, okay, their road warriors.
They're taken on the New York Giants on Sunday, November
twenty eighth at one pm. The Giants are struggling a
little bit this year. They're three and six. They don't
play till tomorrow night, Monday Night Football, so it's a
quick turnaround for the Giants and then the Eagles will
hop on a bus and head up north. Yeah, it's
(01:10:34):
been a while since we've played an NFC East opponent,
the Cowboys being our only NFC East opponent that we faced.
This is one of those games where we have to
make sure weekend bring our sense of urgency and intensity
up to the metal Lands because New York is probably
it's probably a game they won't win tomorrow night, but
we'll find out. But that's a that's a game that's
(01:10:55):
going to be very important for the Eagles to try
to keep this momentum going. And the Giants, they've been
really banged up on offense, They've had a number of
guys go in and out of the lineup, and that
they're coming off a bye week as well, so Monday
Night an important game for them as they try and
establish what that identity is going to be in the
second half of the season. There's a lot ahead of
the Eagles, all nfcast opponents except for one and a
(01:11:16):
bye week, So the time is now. Yeah, it's the
best time of the year and you want to get
to this part of the year. What it's still an
opportunity to play in the postseason, and this has been
a weird year in the NFL. Teams that look like
they were going to run away and be do well
this year, they seem to have come back to the
pack and the Eagles, like several other teams that get
off to a little bit of a slow start, they're
(01:11:38):
starting to find their grooves. So this is the portion
of the season where the Eagles are playing their best
football and it's the right time. It's almost like a
college season where you have your out of conference opponents
early on, and now you get to the conference games
and it's time to turn it on. Now. It can
go either way for the Eagles here down the stretch,
and these next few games are really going to tell
the tale for twenty twenty one. Well for now, that's
(01:11:59):
it for us on the postgame show, I'm Gabriella de
Givanni for fran Duffy, and I Greece. We'll see you
next time.
