Kimber Kauffman (00:00):
Philippians
chapter two. I don't know if
(00:02):
I've ever done this before, Ican remember doing it before,
but it's continuing on from thetext from this morning, Sunday
morning, Sunday night, maybe wehave some time in my life. I'm
like, I don't recallPhilippians. And the second
chapter, we read it thismorning, we had STCA, do a skit
about it this morning. And let'sagain read it the four verses of
the second chapter. If you haveany encouragement from being
(00:28):
united with Christ, if anycomfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, ifany tenderness and compassion,
then make my joy complete bybeing like minded, having the
same love, being one in spiritand purpose, Do nothing out of
selfish ambition or vainconceit. But in humility,
(00:48):
consider others better thanyourself. Each of you should
look not only to your owninterest, but also to the
interest of others. The thesisof these four verses is this.
Paul says, make my joy completeby being like minded. The burden
(01:11):
of his heart was that Christianswould get along. It is very
interesting if you'll study theNew Testament to see how many
times Christians don't getalong. Do you remember the
disciples, the disciples wereconstantly bickering and
fighting not constantly, but allregularly and they were with
Christ. Often you see them doingthat, you turn to the book of
(01:32):
Galatians. And when it gives youthe works of the flesh, what's
right there, strife and thehatred, those types of things.
And when you look here, in thebook of Philippians, you see
that there's this gigantic themearound unity, because Paul was
concerned that Satan would getinvolved in the church, and he
would dis unify the church, separations, factions, trouble,
(01:55):
and the key to goodinterpersonal relationships, the
goal that the basis of it all isverse one, and that is this. Is
there any encouragement frombeing united with Christ? While
Sure there is? Is the popeCatholic? Remember? Is there any
comfort from his love? Well, yes. Is there any fellowship
(02:17):
with the Spirit? Of course, isthere any tenderness and
compassion? Is there anyaffection and mercy? In other
words, then if there is, if thisis the basis, then make my joy
complete, be like minded. And Iwill say again, because I'll
tell you something, it isabsolutely I must force it upon
you, I will do everything from ahuman standpoint that you see
(02:38):
this, you will not be able toget along and good interpersonal
relationships with your husband, with your wife, with your
neighbors with those that youwork with. I tell you come to
grips with verse one. And thatis this that's the basis for all
good relationships. And that isthis you understand the gospel
message. And the gospel messageis not some foggy thing. Yes,
(02:59):
Jesus died for me. I mean, that's not to party. You
understand that a little bit.
But it's extremely clear. My sinis what put Jesus on the cross.
His love is what paid the pricefor my sin. Here, I'm Yeah,
united with Christ and have anexalted standing of total
righteousness before God,understanding the wonderful news
of salvation, that you're nolonger under condemnation, but
that you are at peace with Godis the basis for everything,
(03:23):
just to show you're inPhilippians got one book to
Colossians. Now, in one servicethis morning, I referred to this
but go to the third chapter ofColossians. And look with me to
the 15th verse. And it says, this course is chapter three,
and we just went over one book,it says this. Look, look what he
says in the third chapter, starting with verse five, okay,
(03:45):
look at this, clip to death.
therefore, whatever belongs toyour earthly nature, you see,
the Christian is still going tobe struggling. You have to put
it to death, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires,
and greed, which is idolatry.
Because of these things. Thewrath of God is coming. Verse
seven, you used to walk in theseways in the wife you once lived,
(04:05):
but now you must rid yourselvesof all such things is this
anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language from your lips
don't lie to one another. Again, all these practices of dis
unification, all these practicesof not getting along. And then
he says, verse 12, therefore, asGod's chosen people, holy and
dearly loved, clothe yourselveswith compassion, kindness,
(04:26):
humility, gentleness, patience, what is that? There's all these
relationships and how to getalong, bear with each other,
forgive whatever grievances youmay have against one another,
forgive as the Lord forgave you.
And over all of these virtuesput on love which binds them all
together in perfect unity. Doyou get the point here? He's
(04:47):
still stressing get along, beunified. But now look at this.
Let verse 15. Let the peace ofChrist umpire in your hearts
rule in your hearts, since asmembers of One body, you were
called to peace and be thankfulthe basis for how to put anger
out of your life. And how tohave good relationships is that
(05:08):
you allow the peace that youhave with God through Christ, to
rule in your interpersonalrelationships. All the terms
here are in the plural. He'stalking about the church getting
along. And it's important thatwe understand that you are not
going to be able to get along ifwe really aren't sinners, I know
you're saying Here he goesagain, when you shut the guy up,
he won't stop talking like this.
But it's true. We are not goingto be able to get along with
(05:32):
each other until we come to thegrips of what real righteousness
is. Do you know why, my friends?
Because what is the gospelmessage? The Gospel message is
righteousness? What isrighteousness? I always give you
this definition you should knowby now what is it right
relationships? What is ultimaterighteousness, this way,
vertical relationship with God,what then is the basis for all
(05:54):
horizontal relationships, aproper vertical relationship
with God. And that comes fromemphasized and understanding the
gospel message. Well, now let'sgo back to Philippians. And
realize, this is what Paul'stalking about here. He says
this, the basis for how you areto get along is things such as
being united with Christ, beingcomforted from his love,
fellowship with a spirit oftenderness and compassion. And
(06:15):
then he says, this is the goalof unity verse to make my joy
complete by being like mine. Andhere's the goal, having the same
love being one in spirit andpurpose. You know, one thing I
say again, I know I've said itmany times, but I must say it
again, I don't want this churchto become a boring church. Gee,
what a boring churches. A boringchurch is a church where
(06:38):
everybody has got to vote thesame way, everybody has got to
dress the same way. Everybodyhas got to do all the same
things and do not do all thesame things. And make sure that
everyone agrees on every issueexactly the same way. That's
exactly what we don't want.
Because we want this the issuethat holds us together, the
person that leads us, the onethat's leading the charge, the
(06:59):
leader of the Calvary that we'rebehind is Jesus, he is so far
out in front, that we may allhave little differences of how
we exactly accomplish all ofthese coldest to do some of the
stronger some areas and othersummer I was emphasizing one
thing over another. But thepoint is this, we're following
Jesus and we love him. And thatis the goal. So anyway, the goal
is this. Remember, being likeminded having the same love
(07:21):
being one in spirit. Rememberwhat that means one soul, and
you remember what it says andpurpose the way that the Version
translates it purpose, it meansthis well, actually, the one
thing minding or thinkingconstantly on the one thing,
Christ is not divided. We are Weare one sold, we are committed
to one thing now that brings usup to where we are. That was a
(07:44):
quick review that here we arenow verse three, and that is
this how Okay, so if the basisof it all is the cross is the
Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ andunderstanding who we are in
Christ, if the goal is versetwo, that we have the same love
being one in spirit and purpose, then how can we practically do
it? Well, here you go, you'reready, the practical
application, look with thediverse three, the practical
(08:05):
application of the Unified lifethree a do nothing out of
selfish ambition and vainconceit. You know, you find
something very interesting, theword nothing. If you study that,
carefully, you will find that itmeans nothing. Okay? That's
exactly what it means. Donothing. As you approach life.
(08:26):
If you really want to be able toget along with other people,
guess what it is? Listen. Guesswhat's the one thing you can do
to have a good peacefulmarriage? Guess what it is? You
want to have a good peacefulmarriage? Anybody here for that?
Anybody here for joining us?
Yes, I see that hand. Okay, you're right. And he was among
married people said that. Okay.
If you want to have a goodmarriage, then do this. Don't do
(08:50):
anything in that marriage out ofselfish ambition. Once you start
having selfish ambition andthinking of yourself first,
that's when you get problems. Doyou know why two people have
trouble when they get married.
Because one is selfish, theother selfish here too selfish
people and somebody's got torule. So the trouble starts very
(09:11):
simple. The practicalapplication of a unified
lifestyle in church at work andmarriages, this Do nothing out
of selfish ambition. I wastrying to think as I was
meditating on this this week, how I could do it. And I
thought, maybe bring a mannequinup here or something, but bring
a corpse in. Because if you areabsolutely dead to yourself,
then you would not respond. Goodillustration. First off, you're
(09:35):
dead spiritually in the grace ofGod has got to awaken you. You
can take a guy that's been aBuddha Hall like all his life,
and what do you do you take hisfavorite bottle of vodka and rub
it right in front of his nose?
Come on, Charlie, he's dead.
There is no response. You say,you being dead in your
trespasses. But let's take it tothis Christian level. Don't do
anything out of selfishambition. Listen, you're dead to
(09:57):
yourself. Christ is really inyour life.
Listen, you know what I'm sayingthis, I'm afraid of this. I'm
afraid there are people righthere hearing me say this, and
you're even doing one of thesegood points. But you know what's
gonna happen, you aren't goingto practice it and it's going to
lead to a real mess in yourlife. Because all of a sudden
(10:18):
down the road, you start havingtrouble. It seems like the arena
for trouble that I have beeninvolved in recently is that of
marriage. And as I've counseledpeople, all of a sudden, is they
say this, they are no longerinterested in what God says they
are interested in pleasingthemselves. They've done it the
other way, all they can, it justdoesn't work. They're gonna do
it their way. If you want to getalong with people, the first
(10:42):
step is this. Remember whoChrist is and who you are the
great themes of salvation.
Remember, the goal is that youare the one and sole purpose and
spirit. Even though that doesn'tmean you do everything exactly
the same way. Or remember thisthe first step don't do
anything. In selfish ambition.
You know what that means?
Rivalries. It actually meansthis a party spirit. Now I say a
party spirit doesn't mean like,Hey, let's go party. That's not
(11:05):
what I mean. I mean, like theDemocratic Party, or the
Republican party, a partyspirit, a faction feuding from
self will, it comes from getthis the word selfish ambition
comes from the word AirFloss, where we get the word hireling.
It means this, a guy is hired byhis boss, and he goes out and in
while on a mission for his boss, but for his employer, guess what
(11:29):
he does, he tries to get a groupof his boss's employees together
to side with him to turn againsthis boss. That's exactly what
the word means. In other words, instead of pulling with all of
your mind to help the cause ofChrist, you're really there,
maybe pulling a little bitbecause maybe you love Christ,
because this was written toChristians, but you've got your
(11:52):
own agenda, and you want to doit your way. And you want to
make sure that everybody elsedoes it your way. And the idea
is that you're really notpulling for the entire cause of
Christ, but you're pulling foryour particular party branch of
the cause of Christ. I will tellyou, I don't know. But
denominations. After a while, itseems like all of them start to
(12:14):
rot. And you know, somethingthat scares the living daylights
out of me. Because pretty soonwe're standing up for our little
protective corner of the market.
And that's all that mattersinstead of the entire cause of
Christ. We must be careful. Thishas been with the church. From
(12:39):
the beginning, you rememberSecond Corinthians 1220, we
looked at this morning, some ofyou looked at it somebody who
didn't. Paul said, I'm afraidthat when I come and find you,
you're going to be all split upand divisive. I'm afraid you're
not gonna be getting along andthere's gonna be hatred and
divisive. Well, that's the wordthe same word is used in
synchrony is 1220. It's alsoused in Hebrews, or excuse me,
James, chapter three, I want youto go to James three, and see
this with me, because this isthe same word as found here, a
(13:00):
selfish ambition in Jameschapter three. And starting with
verse 13. James chapter threeand starting with verse 13.
While you're turning there, mayI remind you of Third John nine,
the Optra thiese, who loves tobe first? When I come out, I'll
confirm to the face for Johnsaid, Okay, notice this
(13:23):
attitude, please get thiseverybody. Hey, listen. Let
God's word be God's Word overyour life right now, if it
involves your marriage, if itinvolves work, if it involves
some neighbor, if you knowsomebody in this church that
you're not getting along with, listen to what it says. Verse
13, of Chapter Three of James, who is wise and understanding
among you, let him show it byhis good life, by deeds done in
(13:47):
humility that come from wisdom.
But if you harbor Biddy bitterEnver, she's, but if you harbor
bitter envy, and selfishambition, same word, write their
same word selfish ambition, inyour hearts, do not boast about
it or deny the truth that pleaseget this if you've got selfish
ambition in your life. Don't youboast about it? I'll tell you
(14:09):
why. Because if you do, you'redenying the very truth of God's
loving word. And not only that, please get verse 15 Such wisdom
does not come down from heaven, but as earthly unspiritual of
the devil, man that all thesobers up for where you have
envy and selfish ambition, thereit is, again, there you find
disorder and every evilpractice. You can be sure of
(14:33):
this. This whole attitude isthat I've got to find myself
it's a latitude that i i cannotcooperate for the unit, the
cause of the unit and just thinkof what I'm saying. The man who
says this a man I gotta be me. Ican't worry about my wife and
kids. That guy you know what itis, he is controlled by the
devil. Just mark it down. Itsays so right there. This has
(14:56):
not come from above the personUnder thinks the individual is
more important than the unit isa person that does not have his
mind in God's word. Because juststudy every time you see
somebody filled with the HolySpirit in the Bible, what do you
see? unification? What do yousee in Ephesians? The fruit of
the Spirit? What is it, that youspeak to one another in psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs?
(15:18):
And the whole idea of that a godbeing in control of your life is
that you aren't full of selfishambition, but you show me
somebody who in their marriageat work at church, whatever it
is, yeah, they're not doing itmy way. I'm gonna show you
somebody that's being controlledby the of all my friends. That's
pretty serious. We've got to bevery careful about it. But it
says this selfish ambition nowwe're back to Philippians
chapter two. I hope you're withme. Philippians chapter two.
(15:42):
Selfish ambition and vainconceit. Again, vain conceit.
You know what that is. It's justbasically you could mark it down
in your bibles if you want toput a being a Pharisee. It's the
idea of being a balloon. Wow,look how big that blue is.
Pretty impressive. Just take onelittle pin. Pop, bang, got
(16:05):
nothing to it, except fromsaliva we from blowing up the
inside of it. Right? There'snothing left. That's what the
word means. It means actually,it's two different Greek words
guess what it means empty.
Glory. Empty. Glory. One mansaid this. Vainglory is the
(16:26):
disease selfish ambition is thesymptom. Do you want to have
peace in your life? Do you wantto have unification? Do you want
to get along with otherChristians? Don't do anything.
Not one thing out of selfishambition. Don't do anything for
Vainglory.
(16:58):
Notice three, verse three V. Butin humility, consider others
better than yourself. Nowinteresting. Here it is. Get
this don't do anything byselfish ambition. Don't do
anything for vainglory, but instrong contrast to that, that's
how you'd read it in the Greekbut in strong contrast to the
the vain conceit and strongcontrast the selfish ambition
here is what you need to putinto your life. Humility, guess
(17:21):
what the word there is? The wordfor humility is this the mind
humbled is very much a word ofthe mind. You purposely think
with your mind about yourself ina lowly way. It actually could
be translated lowliness of mindor a modest opinion of oneself.
(17:45):
One has said this, the gracethat when you know you have it,
you have lost it. So you don'tknow if you're humble. Because
once you say you're humble, you're no longer humble. HG
moles. Bishop mole said thisrevealed religion now revealed
(18:05):
religion is good. By the way.
That means BiblicalChristianity. That's his way of
saying that revealed religionbases its mighty positive
morality on the profoundnegative of the surrender and
dethronement have self beforeredeeming Lord, who has had pity
on perfectly unworthy objects.
(18:26):
The world's poor spirited andthe Lord's poor in spirit are
phrases of very different tones.
This is the person that is bythe way, there is no way you can
sane humility. You can't fakeit. You can't pretend to be
human and not be truly humble.
(18:51):
You make a decision of your mindthat you will view yourself in
memory of verse one. You haveWilde and verse one. What is it?
Well, you were the great sinnerthat God has loved. You are the
one that was alienated from Godand under his wrath, and now you
are united with Christ. You arethe one that fellowships now
with the Holy Spirit. Now,please get this data. Never
(19:15):
practice selfish ambition orvain conceit, but in humility,
get what it says. Considerothers better than yourself. Now
listen, the word consider inyour Bible is actually the word
are you ready for this? Esteemis actually the word self
esteem. Well, this is what theBible teaches others esteem. And
(19:36):
the point here is this. Don't beselfish. Don't be full of
selfish Pharisee gratitudes butinstead, keep your mind humble,
think lowly of yourself, andinstead esteem others better
than yourself. A Steaming is aword that means this to be chief
or to lead to interesting.
That's what the word issteaming. Is it other words to
(19:58):
regard or to consider if all ofa sudden I would say, and now
the chief of the United StatesArmed Forces is going to walk in
here, everybody you know,President Bush would walk in
here any the Chief, Chiefcommanding officer, whatever he
would come in, or it's thechief, and as he would come up
here, we would all stand or dowhatever he would. The idea is
this, you leave before your mindthis thought other people are of
(20:19):
surpassing value over you. Ifthere is anything that is
contrary that's being taughttoday is that this you demand
your rights, you get your wayyou make sure you assert
yourself. And it's not biblical.
(20:40):
That's wrong, you're gonna befrustrated, because you won't
run your life on the gasoline ofGod's word, you'll be running it
on the humanism of man. It's soclear. This passage is brought
joy to my heart to see thisagain, is the very word for
esteem. You see, there is somuch on self esteem, but look
carefully, you just let the textspeak to you. What does it say?
It says this lower or humblyview yourself, and have a high
(21:03):
opinion of others. And the wordbetter is translated is the word
which actually means this, aboveand to hold as two words put
together above and to hold. Yousee that? In other words, you
think of other people and I putthem above and I hold them
they're above me, is what theconcept is. In fact, the word
(21:24):
better is translated in three, eight and four, seven. Let's go
to three, eight. Look what itsays. It says, in three, eight.
What is more, I considereverything lost to the
surpassing greatness of knowingChrist. He's nowhere there. It's
translated surpassing otherwords better than definitely
above yourself, okay? To getthis for seven. And the peace of
(21:47):
God, which transcends allunderstanding will guard your
hearts and minds, there's theword transcends, what is that?
Above, above your mind all theway up here? Now, let me make a
couple of comments, though, tobalance this out. Do we mean
then, that God loves otherpeople better than you? Do we
mean it somehow God has giftedother people better than you are
(22:09):
somehow you're not as forgivingas somebody else. No. But it
does mean this. The natural viewthat we're going to take is this
selfish ambition. Listen, youdon't have to work at it. My
little kids don't have to workat it. Nobody has to work at it,
you will just naturally be fullof selfish ambition in vain
conceit. But that's why you gotto choose to leave before your
(22:31):
mind that you will esteem regardlet the cheek rule your mind.
This thought that others arebetter than you. That's what
this text is saying. Itranslated like this, my own
translation was sort of fun andworking through this. Do nothing
according to a party spirit oroutward appearance, but in sharp
contrast in lowliness, lead orkeep before your mind that you
highly regard one other assurpassing yourself that's his
(22:58):
Christianity. This is what JesusChrist did. This is the concept
of a truth that God has calledus to the once the hell this is
practically applied, even ineveryday life, well, everyday
life is verse four. And we'realmost done. This is about the
end here. Look. It says each ofyou should look not only to your
(23:20):
own interest, but also to theinterest of others now I don't
like the new internationaltranslation. Actually, I'm gonna
read it to you directly from theGreek if you just took it
straight out of the text andsays this not your own things
each looking at but also theother things each. That's what
it would say not your own thingslooking at not your own things
(23:45):
ah looking at but also the otherthings ah and you know what the
word for look here that's thekey word the verse for you know
what the word look is it's theword where we get scope not the
mouthwash but scope and it's theidea get this to keep your eye
fixed on the subject it meansthis to view attentively it
(24:09):
means a watcher don't again to317 Look over to 317 and here's
the way it's used again. It saysjoin with others in following my
example brothers and take noteof those who live according to
the pattern we gave you takenote of them that's one of these
take note Gration six one don'tturn there it says this you know
(24:35):
when you're attempted you whatyour spiritual go and confront
the person that's or try to helpthe person that's that's
sending. And it says this, butwatch yourselves you know what
that means? Turn the scope onyourself. When you go to try to
exempt talk to somebody who's insin. You turn the scope on your
own life. That's what it means.
How about this synchronous 14?
So we fix our eyes not on whatis seen but what is unseen. It's
the idea fix it's translated, fix your eyes. It's in
(24:58):
Corinthians 418 and also Romans1617 Watch out for those who
cause division. If youunderstand what this is saying,
the Bible says the key to unityis this, that you do nothing out
of selfish ambition or vainconceit, but each one is steams
the other person better thanthemselves. And get this Oh get
this because it is so great.
Scope out other Christians witha fixed arm. You know, there's
(25:21):
those those F 18 pilots those F16 pilots. And also they're
looking for that mag in the gunwhen they press the button got
to flex they got that lot laserbeam. Now they've gotta I guess
they tell me least in the moviesthey do. All right. It gets what
that's what it means you getthat laser beam. But guess what
it is? That laser beam is notconstantly on yourself. The
(25:42):
laser beam is constantly onothers. This is so familiar.
Jesus teaches this, He that hischief among you, let them be the
servant. Right? Fixing ourselfon other people, there is
something that is encouragingwhen you know other people are
(26:03):
looking out for you, isn't it?
Man, I challenge you to dosomething. Go out to the
restaurant or just sit at homewith your wife and just stop and
look at her. Just look at herwith a kind loving expression.
(26:23):
And keep your eyes on the youknow what you guys probably
don't even do that I imagine.
But the fact is, though, whenwhen we're being watched, or
something we're like, Well, thepoint here is this when it says
things when the scripture saysthings, it actually means
interest, you know that don'tyou the interest of others. So
put your scope is fixed, like alaser beam and F to 16 on
(26:48):
others. And in please get thisit's very emphatic. It says not
on your own things, but on thethings of others not on your own
interest. But in contrast toalways looking out for yourself,
which will everybody does. Youlook out for others. I say it
again, he that refreshes otherswill himself be refreshed. Don't
(27:11):
get duped into the philosophy ofthe world that I've got to take
care of number one, you starttaking an interest in other
people, how many times you thinkof me think with me about a
godly person that you know, andI'm gonna tell you something
about them. It's a quality thatI don't have it. I wish I had
more. But you show me a godlyperson. And I'll show you
somebody that when you talk tothem, you feel like you're the
(27:33):
only one in the whole world thatmatters. Right? So this is a
call then to widen our scope.
Let's go back over this. Let mesay this. Is this is fun. This
is what you can do on a Sundaynight. What is the basis then of
unity? Who can tell me thebasis? Let's see how good you
are with me tonight. The crosslooking back to the cross.
(27:56):
That's right, getting focusingon the cause which by the way,
that's with all the storms beingunited with Christ comes through
the cross come from from hislove come through the cross.
Okay. Okay. What's the golden ofunity? Rob said verse one, where
do we go next? Verse two. Andthat is this. Let's read it. It
says this. Let's read together.
I've can't do it together. Wehave too many we can't we're not
(28:18):
unified in our versions. Okay.
So is this having the same lawof being one in spirit and
purpose? That means this onesold and having the one thing on
the mind? Christ, right? That'sgonna be the goal, and not
getting sidetracked. Then whatis the practical steps to do
that? Well, first off, look atverse three, we do nothing out
of selfish ambition or vainconceit. But in contrast to
(28:41):
that, in humility, we considerothers better than ourselves.
But listen, friends, if youwould just take verses, one
through four, memorize them, meditate on them, work on him,
ask God to write them upon thetables of your heart and ascribe
them in your mind, it shouldtransform the way you live. And
then look at this, each of usshould look to your own
(29:03):
interest, but also to theinterest of the you know what it
would have been like, let meclose by this, because look at
verse five, have this attitude, which was in Christ Jesus. Now,
