For the better part of two decades Jennifer Hartswick has held tenure in the Trey Anastasio Band (of Phish fame) providing powerhouse vocals and impeccable trumpet playing. When she first met Trey and started collaborating she was just a teenager and self described "jazz nerd" coming out of the backwoods of Vermont. Since that time she has become one of the most respected, in-demand and busiest musicians on the jam-band and festival scene, guesting with a plethora of bands including Phish, Umphrey's Mcgee, Soulive, The Motet, The 9th Power, String Cheese Incident, and a slew of others. In addition to being an in-demand supporting musician she also fronts her own band The Jennifer Hartswick band with members of The 9th Power and recently recorded her upcoming record with the highly acclaimed contemporary jazz bassist Christian McBride. In this conversation we talk about what it was like for Jen first joining TAB and immediately heading out on the road as such a young women, how she maintains her stamina with her busy lifestyle, her illuminating thoughts on preserving one's unique authenticity in this world, and much more!
