Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the best of the Fan Morning
Show on ninety three five and one oh seven five
The Fan.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
That Hey, you got to.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
It's you were listening to.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
The Fan Morning Show on Sports Radio ninety three five
and one oh seven five The Fan.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
Uh, gorgeous morning out at Legends Golf Course here in
the southern tip of Indianapolis, the region out here, and
it is a terrific.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Day for golf.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
It's that beautiful time Kevin Bowen and James Boyd early
in the morning, sun has just come up. You look
out over a pristine golf course with the appropriate trees
and shrubbery and the greens and the sand and everything,
and you've just got a little bit of mist rising
up from the ground. Like this is absolute perfect time
of day, is it not.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
Yeah, I'm glad.
Speaker 6 (00:53):
I'll do it to make it back from Baltimore in time.
Look across, see the beautiful face of Kevin boll early
in the morning. But uh, it's been nice and honestly,
driving up, I was just hoping that the fall clear
up a little bit so people can have a good,
nice day of greens.
Speaker 7 (01:07):
Well, I'm glad I'm on the other side of the table,
because right now I might be approaching midnight boys.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Oh what's going on?
Speaker 8 (01:14):
This makes me happy. I love watch well, I love
talking to you too.
Speaker 7 (01:20):
I love obviously being so fortunate and lucky to have
this job and talk sports from seven to ten am
Monday through Friday. We got a big one tonight. Hear
in about twelve hours, so they'll be kicking off. But
more than anything, I love watching a golf course come
to life, and this is absolutely heaven right now. I
should have brought the clubs, right, I mean you didn't
(01:40):
even put them in your back? Well no, I mean
like brought them up here, okay, and I during the
break I.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Might go get mine. I brought mine, so who knows
that good?
Speaker 7 (01:47):
Look at these great trophies we have here for our
winners today. Can we show these on the YouTube camp?
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Can you reach out?
Speaker 7 (01:52):
Can you reach that man who needs a clear jug
at the British Open.
Speaker 8 (01:56):
We've got this show over fan Golf Invitational. Here. Look
at this many Larry O'Bryan trophy.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Stuff right there?
Speaker 8 (02:02):
Look at that mark? Can you see that on the
YouTube chat?
Speaker 3 (02:05):
It No one on our.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Staff is eligible to win that. By the way, no
one on staff eligible way. Anyway, we're out here with
the Franciscan Foundation r raising a lot of great money
for those folks, and they do so much good across
the community. We'll tell you all about that as the
day goes along. We got a ton of sports to
talk about. Obviously, you're back from Baltimore, James got back
safely yesterday. You missed a near brawl in the studio
(02:29):
between Kevin and Mark yesterday over a now discontinued beverage
called Mondo.
Speaker 6 (02:35):
So I do have questions about this, Kevin, because I
saw you post that they might have been at Low's,
and I felt like, one sould you trust that?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Is that a real Google search?
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Not that I doubt that you are trying to find
these things, but man, are we buying drinks from Lows?
Speaker 5 (02:49):
That a thing?
Speaker 8 (02:49):
Well, that's a low supermarket, to be clear.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Market out of the area in Texas.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
Let's be fair, it's in Texas. Oh, it's in Texas.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
I really don't want to spend a ton of time
on this yesterday because we did a lot, but I
do want to say I'm still I left the show
with even more concerns that I addressed with you near
the end of the show, Kevin, if this product was
actually discontinued in twenty twenty two and someone still can
find it somewhere online, are you Is that a product
you're still willing to ingest into your body?
Speaker 7 (03:20):
Jeff, I've licked my golf ball on the golf course
to clean it. You know how many pesticides are on
that golf ball. You know what I've put in my
body over thirty five years on this earth, and no,
I know extra happily happily consume a chilled Mondo once.
Mark Dighton actually is a man of his word and
response to the bet that was made again, I you know,
we do not need to rehash this.
Speaker 8 (03:41):
For three hours.
Speaker 7 (03:42):
I'm disappointed by two things, Mark not being a man
of his word and Mark going behind my back to
text my wife.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
I'm disappointed that I don't own a DeLorean to go
back in time to buy you these discontinued drinks.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
See he said innocently enough that he contacted your wife
because you had said your mother and law had them,
and so he was trying to get a direct line
on them.
Speaker 7 (04:03):
Contact my wife sounds like he wrote her a letter
in the mail. He texted her behind my back is
what he did. And it was right in front of
your face. You just didn't see it behind the.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Desk, all right, So anyway, we'll put that to bed.
We'll wait for the mando to arrive, if it ever does.
Legends Golf Course, you've played here before, Kevin, You and
I played here before when we used to take listeners.
We got to start that next year. We'll take a
listener golflin every month next year.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Jeff.
Speaker 7 (04:26):
That Yes, that was a glorious day you, me and Kirk,
if I remember correctly, over his here ereak nine twenty
seven holes at the lovely Legends property down here in Franklin,
and he had Robert Montgomery, Knight's favorite course, if I'm
not mistaken.
Speaker 8 (04:39):
Back in the day used to host the state finals.
Speaker 7 (04:42):
So as much as my memories with you and Kirk
were great, I'll probably have to put the state final
memory slightly above that. So yes, awesome, awesome place. Really
happy to have everybody come out here again. Ten thirty,
we'll get things started. I can't wait, cannot wait. Looks
like a beautiful day, and boy we got a full
one tonight. James, Boyd, We're have tore the breathing Midnight
Oil a little bit.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Here, definitely.
Speaker 6 (05:04):
I mean that's what you sign up for when you
do these types of shows and choose this career. But
I am excited to finally see some actual real football.
I think I have an article coming out later today
in the first literal sentence is we're all skeptics and
haters this time of year, because every time a player
that's not established has a pretty good day in training camp,
(05:24):
like Ady Mitchell had in the joint practice against the Ravens,
the first thing someone is gonna say is, well, it's
not a real game. And honestly, I might be a
hater myself because I think that often when it comes
to players who have to prove themselves. And so I've
listened players coming out later today of who I think
has the most to gain or lose for that matter,
throughout the preseason, and on top of that, at least
give some valid some some credit to perhaps a few
(05:48):
players who might be breaking out for the Colts this year.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
It's gonna be fun to watch.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Just keep in mind, I think the teams probably get
more information on a lot of their players from those
joint practices because as we've talked about for years and
years and years in as people know, you come out
tonight and if you're the quarterback, for example, say Anthony Richardson,
that first quarter and a half, you're going to see
some really basic defenses. You know, you got to figure
out a my plan of four to three or three
four which you already know going in. Is it going
to be single high safety, is it going to be
(06:14):
double safety. There's not a lot of Hey, we're going
to show you a bunch of stunts and trick you
and do things like that. It's I think order of
operations is really important in a game like tonight. Can
the quarterback get to play into the huddle, can he
communicate it quickly? Can he put the guys in the
right spot where they're supposed to be, make sure that
the guy is in motion at the right time, all
those kinds of things. So there's value to be gained
(06:35):
from it, but it's it's not football at what I
would call an NFL high level.
Speaker 8 (06:40):
Kevin Well, No, definitely.
Speaker 7 (06:42):
Not one month from today the Colts will play the
regular season opener. But Anthony Richardson can get hit tonight
for the first time, and then how many months and.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
That makes a difference because the clocks.
Speaker 7 (06:51):
Sadly, it makes a difference for him based off how
his career arc has gone from an availability standpoint. So
I think tonight matters a whole lot for Anthony Richardson.
I think tonight all sample size. We'll see Daniel Jones.
I think there's some specific things you're looking to see
out of each of them. I think it'd be beneficial
I Spencer Schrader got a kick or too from longer distance. Tonight, Again,
you only have three of these moments where it is
(07:12):
the closest thing you get to real in the month
of August. So I think there's a lot of things
we can go to in terms of items to watch
for tonight again, seven o'clock tonight. You can hear that
obviously on our airwaves. That is Matt Taylor, Charles R.
Buckle from Baltimore, and then locally Fox fifty nine Jill
Wright sliding into the TV booth with the one and
only Greg Rakestraw.
Speaker 8 (07:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
I think one of the things that I always like
to look for, especially for individual players and their position battles,
like how do they approach the game, their aggressiveness, that
does the motor never stop. Some of these guys on
special teams that just keep going and going and going
and find.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
A way to make play. So yeah, there is value.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
I don't mean to say that there's not value, because
it is as close as you can get at this
point in time. But it everybody just has to show up,
make sure they do their for individuals, James, make sure
you show up, do your job exactly the way you're
supposed to do it, and do it in the best possible.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Way that you can with a high motor. That was
just killing he did.
Speaker 7 (08:09):
And then what I like though, he's cleaned up seven
in the morning and you know who needs insects.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
But then he cleaned up after it. He didn't just
kill it. He cleaned it up.
Speaker 7 (08:16):
And that looks like quite the smear on the nice
uh whatever you call it.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Don't do this.
Speaker 5 (08:23):
Beer pong table is not like you know, ironed or anything.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
If you know, it's.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
Gonna be pregaming.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
He's gonna be jumped like Bill's Mafia style jumping onto
the table later on.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
Shout on it and you know, make sure it gets
all cleaned for you, Kevin, But what.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Did you take from the uh the scrimmages yesterday or
day before yesterday.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
You're out there, what did you What do you think
the team took from that?
Speaker 6 (08:45):
Well, one, keep your hands up because obviously someone might
come off the sideline and punch you. So Nate Wiggins,
I don't know what he was thinking with the Ravens.
That was such a bizarre scenario because all of us
were under the impression that he was involved in the play.
Speaker 5 (09:01):
He was not.
Speaker 6 (09:02):
So from what I understand, Tyler Goodson, what got lit
up on a punt return and it always happens that
way on special teams, and you got Nate Wagan's running
from the sideline to fight a dude, and that is
just I don't know if he was frustrated because a
lot of so he came off the sideline, he came
up Sideline's why he got ejected from practice. Tyler Goodson
actually remained in practice. He just didn't go back into
(09:23):
any live action. But he didn't get ejected because I mean, honestly,
probably was defending himself.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
So that's number one.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
And then beyond that, I think it was just, you know,
the offense I thought looked pretty solid. But I will
say one of the things that stood out to me, guys,
is as much as I wrote about and I probably
should have mentioned it in the story, but there's so
much that goes on, and I'm like, I don't want.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
To write a book.
Speaker 6 (09:41):
But they had like four false starts against the Ravens,
and Shane lost his mind on the on the fourth one.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
I mean, he said some.
Speaker 7 (09:48):
Things that that was mostly with the first unit.
Speaker 6 (09:50):
Yeah, yeah, and so that to me was alarming because
we've seen that kind of early in camp. Yeah, and
it's kind of been a sporadic issue, you know. I
don't want to say it's an everyday thing, but it
has popped up on a couple of days here and there,
and that to me is just something they cannot really
have happened, not throughout the season, because they're not a
team that is equipped, in my opinion, to sacrifice the
(10:12):
yards like that. Not that any team really wants to,
but obviously I would trust a second and seven with
Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes or even
cej Strout more than I would trust second and seven
with Ar or Daniel Jones.
Speaker 7 (10:25):
You have too many other questions to be worried about
logistical proceeds issues for this team. So yeah, you know,
I think that is an item to keep an eye
on tonight. In defensively, I mean, I think linebackers turned
to the position group that has several different questions not
only at the backs of the depth chart, but the
top of the depth chart right now. And I am
curious to be getting clarity on the Justin Waally knee injury.
(10:46):
You know, if that is something that's going to keep
him out for a period of time, that's not good
at all. And your cornerback Depthe get tested very early
in the season with Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle right
out of the gate.
Speaker 5 (10:57):
So at most timeline for the other guy Jalen je
Juju Brent who.
Speaker 7 (11:02):
You know, obviously we don't expect them to play tonight.
By the way, thank you to on site engineer Cam.
He was terrific with us at Grand Park. Appreciate getting
us set up here, all of our promotion staff that's
in the building. It is a long day here at
the Legends for them, and they were here by six.
Speaker 8 (11:16):
Can really really appreciate that. Hell, they were mowing the greens.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
Now out they're squeegeing some of the putting green and
making sure that people get out there.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Now they've been here grin. Everybody is ready to go
and I can't wait.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
We're gonna go wear some Mazouno golf clubs later on
today we'll tell you about that.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
We have closest to the pen we've got. Now, what
are you going to be trying to help people without today?
Speaker 8 (11:37):
Well?
Speaker 7 (11:37):
I am I close to the pen or my longest
tri because the longest try for me is, like you know,
Greg Maddock, I think it's fastest to the pig.
Speaker 8 (11:43):
I am the thieve.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
It's closest to pick. But you know, David may have
changed that up on you just because he likes to
do that. Well, David Gray likes to keep things moving away.
That is a curveball here.
Speaker 8 (11:52):
I can't wait. I love these little many Larry O'Brien trophies.
Speaker 7 (11:56):
It's like a half Disney World, half Larry O'Brien that
we have the right hand.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
Out hot center on a on a little pedestal there.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
I like that. Or maybe it's a golf ball's a
post app guy center.
Speaker 8 (12:06):
Sure, silent auction carrera, excuse me, a live auction here.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
Yeah, and we'll tell you about some of those items
that people can get on and when they come down here.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
So it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
And you know, we actually got our last foursome filled
earlier this week. You know Harley d Oh, she didn't,
he didn't think he thought he originally he was gonna
have to work today, but then he and his buddies didn't,
and we had one.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Spot left, and Harley claimed that earlier ten thirty.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
We'll see, Harley cannot wait for that.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
It's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
We'll tell you all about sports coming up with the
Checkdown in a moment here. We got a Colts game
later on tonight, got the Fever playing on the road
out in the Southwest and Phoenix tonight. We'll tell you
all about it as we continue right here on ninety
three five and one oh seven five the fan Mark
Dyked speaking to you and I today James Boyd right there.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Yeah, whenever this came on in a Boyd household growing
up clean?
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Oh is that what it was?
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (12:57):
It was cleaning time.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Everybody move around and clean to beat. There you go,
I like it.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
I thought we lost Kevin Bowen for a moment there
KB was out there with his putter and a couple
of golf balls and over at the putting green there.
I'm just glad you came back for the Colt's preview
segment here.
Speaker 7 (13:12):
All I know is if you're leaning, you better be cleaning, right,
James Boyd, There you go.
Speaker 8 (13:16):
I learned that. Well, how great is that clock there
for the legends?
Speaker 3 (13:19):
That's all.
Speaker 8 (13:20):
I was mesrized by the clock.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
It's a beautiful What kind of memories this place bring
back when you have a clock like that, don't you?
Speaker 8 (13:26):
I mean, are you legit?
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (13:27):
Honestly, I look at the first tea over here on
my right shoulder, and I think, how the hell did
I forget my golf shoes the second ay of the
state finals, No kidding, forgot my golf shoes. And I
you know, that was back in high school when I
had these just stupid Notre Dame shoes that I thought
were cool.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
So I literally wore.
Speaker 7 (13:41):
Those, I think for the first It might have been
the first two holes. Shout out to doctor David Plager
for finally bringing my golf shoes to me. So yeah,
that's that's my first memory as I look out there.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
I did that. Once I went to a I was
racing bikes.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
I was probably twenty one years old, and there was
a bike I was living just outside a Boulder. There
was a bike racing Durango, which is like a four
hour drive, and I got down there and I got
up in the morning for the race, and I didn't
have my shoes.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
I've never had that happen. I did have one of
my friends though, on an AU trip for basketball, I
couldn't find my shoes in our hotel room, which I
knew I brought with me. I was freaking out, and
turns out that he put him in a freezer. So
got my shoes because I was hoping they would throw out.
You know, by the time we got to the court.
That was not a fun time. But looking back on
it's hilarious.
Speaker 7 (14:24):
When we we did our golf trip earlier this year
out to Oregon, uh the final flight was Vegas to
Eugene and this dude walks on the plane six six
three thirty and the only carry on he has are
a pair of what looked to be sized twenty shoes.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
Can you tell us this?
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Yeah, otherwise you got to check those in.
Speaker 7 (14:46):
Starting right tackle for the same so I'm not going
to try and pronounce his name. He went to Oregon State,
so that's why he was flying out there, That's all.
But like, can you imagine that's your life where your
carry on is literally a size twenty shoe.
Speaker 5 (14:57):
And honestly it's those are pretty big and I fee
underneath the.
Speaker 8 (15:00):
I know, I'm like, man, you need to shift those in.
You need the exit row for more ways than one.
Speaker 4 (15:05):
That's funny, that is that is outstanding anywhere at the
Legends golf Course today team being up with Franciscan Franciscan
Health and it's the Fan Invitational and kids under way
about ten thirty Kevin, and where did you figure out?
Speaker 3 (15:17):
What? David? Yet? Are you holding one? Are you long drive?
For sure?
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Now?
Speaker 8 (15:20):
I have not figured that out. But again, I thrilled
to be out here.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
I think it'll be fun day, you know, trying to
make this a little bit different here and you know,
jmbal get a little hooopage going here so you can
try and out shoot JMV. I think they'll have me
posted up on a whole. I don't know if they've
carried on with my Jake query trivia idea. I feel
like that could be a very much in the Jake
Querry world that he would absolutely love that. You know,
you get whatever they will be out here. Three questions right,
(15:44):
maybe t off from the Red Tea something like that.
Two questions, white tea. So I cannot wait for today
to get underway.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Tally Faga Is that who you saw on the plane?
Say that again, Tally a Fuga.
Speaker 8 (15:56):
Boy, that sounded good.
Speaker 5 (15:58):
I hope it's right.
Speaker 7 (15:59):
I mean, all I know is he was a big,
nice dude and had a big pair of shoes.
Speaker 3 (16:04):
It says. I didn't say where he went to school. Here,
I'm looking at Oregon State, is what?
Speaker 8 (16:09):
Is what he told him?
Speaker 4 (16:10):
He's from Tacoma, Washington and he did go to Oregon State.
So that was your guy right there.
Speaker 8 (16:15):
Waga.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
There you go checking in his own shoes.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
Later on tonight, the indianaphis Colts, of course taking on
the Baltimore Ravens, and we know, as you pointed out
a moment ago in the checkdown, Kevin, that the Ravens
will not be playing their starters for the most part,
certainly not Lamar Jackson and probably not Mark Andrews or
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
Is Isaiah Isaiah likely even going to play tonight for
the leave he's hurt.
Speaker 8 (16:35):
If I'm not mistaken, Kyle Hamilton, he's not not playing.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
I've walked past him.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
What's he got going on? They did not hear that.
What's he got going on?
Speaker 6 (16:42):
He just I believe had foot surgery or ankle surgery,
but he has He's in a boot.
Speaker 7 (16:46):
James, which colts offensive starters? Do you think we will
not see? I think Jonathan Taylor is probably obvious. But
do we see Quentin Nelson? Do we see Michael Pittman Jr?
Do we see Bernard Ryman?
Speaker 6 (16:57):
I do wonder about that because as that skew the
of the quarterback. If the line play isn't what you
would expect it to be during the regular season, I
wonder about the offensive line. Also wonder about the wide
receivers to a certain extent too. I would expect Ady
Mitchell to play. He needs the reps. But a guy
like Michael Pittman Junror. Do you arrest him because he
is more of like that possession, physical receiver. Why I
(17:18):
put him out there in Harmer's way if you don't
really need to and he has.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
Nothing to prove.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
I think about the same thing when it comes to
Alec Pierce to a certain degree. So we'll see how
they divvy it up. Shane Styn didn't really get into
it throughout his post practice interview in Baltimore.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
It's interesting if you look at the fifty three man
or at least the depth chart at this point in time,
do we have a lot of depth chart position battles.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
We talked about linebacker.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
Obviously the quarterback thing is going on, but really across
the board.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
What are we looking at?
Speaker 8 (17:48):
Well, I think center.
Speaker 7 (17:48):
You've seen Tanner Bordalini start to take the lead there
over Danny Pinzer. Does that continue in the full padded
of course, you know, finally seeing another team sessions that
we have upcoming here, you know, and I'll go back
to that justin Waally injury. I mean, if all of
a sudden you're dealing with some cornerback questions, then you know,
after Tavera's ward and after Kenny Moore the second, you've
(18:09):
got some jobs that are definitely up for grabs, and
those are big jobs. I mean, those are important jobs.
I mean Leuyn Rumos made no bones about it. He
doesn't really care too much about linebacker. He's going to
play more defensive backs, and so you know, having quality
depth there is vital.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
Again.
Speaker 7 (18:24):
Week one, you got Tyreek Hill and Jayalen Waddle right
out of the gate and they're going to test you.
And you know, even we've seen Ward with a couple
off days here, how much is that just veteran maintenance?
Speaker 8 (18:32):
How much of that is a nagging and growing injury.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
So that's a position group that you know, I think
early on in camp, James I felt like, you know what, Wow,
for the first time in a while, I'm saying the
Colts have like some cornerback depth, but injuries have really
hit it here in the last week or so.
Speaker 8 (18:48):
So to me, that's definitely an area that you got
to keep an eye on.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
So this hands to be too.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Like one of the more important things to keep an
eye on is they would like that offensive line to
just keep the pocket clean.
Speaker 3 (18:57):
And you talk about.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Every offensive way, I know, every offensive line, but it's
been a problem for the Colts and so they need
to do that. And if they're going to give Anthony
Richardson or Daniel Jones the best chance to succeed.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
They're going to have to do a better job of that.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
And you know, it's a different looking offensive line than
they had a little bit last year.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
So I think, to me, that's the big thing that
I'll be watching today.
Speaker 6 (19:18):
Yeah, I think their biggest thing is certainly the just
operational issue you talked about earlier. I think protection wise,
they've been fine even last year. Obviously there's some changes
there upfront for sure. Well last year I thought they
protection wise they were fine. There wasn't a bunch of
scenarios whereever. Else isn't the twenty twenty two offensive line
we're talking about. But I definitely think operationally, And I
(19:39):
go back to Ar saying you had a cadence issue,
and I wonder how much of that is it and
how cool.
Speaker 8 (19:44):
One of the fall starts with Anthony.
Speaker 6 (19:46):
A few of them, Yeah, a few of them were,
But I can't like attribute all of them to them.
I want to say there was four. They might have
been three with Ar, two with AR and the other
the rest with Daniel Jones. Either way, like I said,
Shane lost his mind after one of them and he said.
Speaker 8 (20:00):
Bleep, bleed, bleed.
Speaker 6 (20:01):
We can't allow this, blee bleed bleed to happen, and
I was like, okay, well that certainly is which is
not normal Shane.
Speaker 5 (20:06):
No, No, he's usually relatively reserved.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
Now I will say was a fourth time. Can you
blame me?
Speaker 7 (20:10):
It wasn't just at all, But I'm just providing some
context for you know, you got some coaches that are bleep,
blee bleeping every other session.
Speaker 6 (20:16):
I will say he had a couple of bleep bleeps
after they had some good plays. You know, he's like, oh, yeah,
this is what we're supposed to be doing out here.
So it went both ways, and I think overall he
was pleased with the practice. I just wonder again, operationally
when that stuff will mess you up, because, for example,
I didn't mention this in my story, but late in
practice they went through their typical two minute drills and
things like that, and it was not good. I mean,
Daniel Jones, I don't even think gotten field goal range
(20:39):
or or might be getting the quarterbacks missed up. But
then when they did get field goal range, Fisher Trader
missed a longer field goal. I want to say, it
might have been I don't know, fifty yards, but he
missed it wide left. It was not close, and so
those types of moments you need to be make sure
you're making sure you're executing when it comes to the
pre snap.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
You know, adjustment, the things you got to make, all right.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
The bosses here we can start. Andrew Kerraz here, veteran move.
Speaker 4 (21:03):
I see she's already driving up the bidding on almost
every item so far today.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
I know how that works.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
And we've got some great items which we'll list a
little bit later on today. But it's gonna be a
lot of fun as we've teamed up with Franciscan Health
for a day on the golf course, the Fan Invitational.
Been looking forward to this one for a while. Big
shout out to our whole sponsors today. EA Karts is
coming through Elijah Craig, Premier Weight Loss, We Grow Hair
Kevin a great to sponsor today, Fireball Apple Horizon League
(21:30):
and we'll be talking to an assistant commissioner for the
Horizon League a little bit later on today. I'm looking
forward to that ld Smith Plumbing and the Indianapolis Colts
pitching in today too.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
Oh so, how about that? Thanks to them?
Speaker 7 (21:44):
So who we got quarterbacks Richardson Jones, Jason be and
Riley Leonard and then they go PJA and over to Baltimore.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
They are as vped.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
I think, yeah, we're gonna get We're gonna get two
guys that used.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
To play like three four years ago.
Speaker 8 (21:56):
Maybe, you know, I think it's I think it's really vital.
Speaker 7 (21:59):
And you know, again, the expectation here is, you know,
the Colts will play their starters and we'll see how
many offense starters there are against Baltimore's two's with Anthony Richardson,
so you know, I think if you're trying to keep
score tonight that first quarter and a half, the Colt
should be the better football team. And you know it's
starters versus backups largely, and again with Richardson, I think
(22:22):
what I want to see is just methodical sustaining of drives,
consistent underneath accuracy.
Speaker 8 (22:29):
I don't need to see the flash. I don't know.
Speaker 7 (22:30):
Yeah, I get an Ady Mitchell forty five yard highlight
down the field would be something that you know, whatever
maybe leads sports. Yeah, it would go viral and social media.
But for his sake, it is just steadiness. And you know, honestly,
the reverse could be said for Jones and that you know,
when Daniel Jones gets in there, albeit for two series,
you might want to see a little bit longer of
(22:51):
attempts down the field and James to your point, I
think it's critical that Spencer Schrader gets a couple of
longer kicks tonight.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
You know.
Speaker 7 (22:59):
I know Shane love to go for it, but I
think when you get into those fourth and two moments,
even in the second half, I tried Spencer Trader out
there to see, you know where he is at from.
Speaker 8 (23:09):
And this is a guy that has kicked five field goals.
Speaker 5 (23:11):
Yeah, I don't trust him in his NFL career.
Speaker 7 (23:14):
So and none of them, I believe longer than forty
five yards, if I'm not mistake, of them have been
in for at least fifty So I think that is
an area that you look to for tonight. Of Okay,
how do you exactly want these drives to go? Yeah,
you want the first quarter and a half for the
Colts to be better on the scoreboard. I think that's
probably a fair statement. But if you can kind of
get a little bit more in depth, I think you
(23:36):
would love for Richardson not necessarily to have Yeah, sure,
four plays in eighty five yards that's obviously great, But
if you could really pinpoint how the drives look sustaining
that methodical The boring reel.
Speaker 8 (23:49):
We know he's got a highlight reel.
Speaker 7 (23:50):
The boring reel is where Anthony and Richardson needs a
show sign to growth.
Speaker 3 (23:54):
Let me, this guy's a question about Kicker real quick.
Speaker 4 (23:57):
Is the Colts twenty twenty five kickercessarily on the roster
right now?
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Because you don't seem convinced that Trader is the guy.
Speaker 6 (24:06):
Yeah, I was gonna say I don't trust him yet.
That was gonna be my complete thought, just because he
doesn't have those Let's say he is.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
Not great but not terrible in the preseason. Then what
because we know guys will I.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
Mean simple, If he ain't great, what do you gotta do?
Speaker 3 (24:21):
You bring in guys on Tuesday?
Speaker 5 (24:23):
Yeah, you gotta bring guys in.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
So obviously you don't want to do that because you
did sign him to a two year deal. You did
sign him with the intention of him being the long
term replacement. I think to Matt Gay, but I just
don't trust him, and mainly because I haven't seen it enough.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
This is a very very small sample size we're talking about.
Speaker 6 (24:39):
And again, you know we're all standing there thinking, okay
into practice in Baltimore, here's a way.
Speaker 5 (24:45):
To kind of end there on a high note, and.
Speaker 6 (24:48):
You miss, and obviously it's a practice kick and I'm
not gonna harp on it too much, but those are
the moments where you wonder, have you seen enough pressure
kicks to really be trusted? And that's certainly something you
have to keep in mind because the last last thing
you want to deal with is a kicking issue. I
want to say the Colts ahead aybe eight or nine
games last year that were decided about three points or less.
Speaker 5 (25:07):
And so as much as we know don't really.
Speaker 6 (25:09):
Talk about kickers and don't really care about kickers until
they miss, that is certainly something to keep an eye on.
Speaker 4 (25:15):
I think that that's really important because unless you're one
of the top five to six teams that's in control
most of the time, most games these days in the
NFL come down to how do you play in field
goal and special teams? It's it can go one way. Look,
it's turnovers, right, We've always known that about the NFL.
Take care of the football, play well on special teams
(25:35):
and you're probably gonna make the postseason. Does that mean
you're going to be up there with the Eagles and
the Chiefs. Probably not, but beyond those four or five
really top teams and the few elite teams.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
That's what it comes.
Speaker 7 (25:46):
Down to in the NFL A lot of times, well honestly,
just live in the world of Colts Ravens. The last
couple of years, you know, Lamar Jackson and both of
those games in Baltimore went to overtime. Yeah, and kicking
was a huge deal in both of those games. In
Matt Gay single hand they won the Coltsac game one.
He had like four fifty from north of fifty. So
like the NFL record, Yeah, that's something to keep it ony.
(26:07):
Do you guys see JW. Marriott, it's got a little
Colt sign is going up.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
By the time, it.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
Looks like it's gonna be filled out more.
Speaker 6 (26:15):
Kevin, I thought the saw the picture that you posted,
unless that's just like the one little part they're going
to stick up there.
Speaker 5 (26:20):
But I think somebody's face was cut off.
Speaker 8 (26:21):
Yeah, I'm guessing, and double check me on this.
Speaker 7 (26:26):
The four people on the side of Lucosolo Stadium, is
it Buckner, Jonathan Taylor, Kenny Moore, Quentin Nelson.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
Was the last four that I saw.
Speaker 3 (26:32):
Yes, that's accurate.
Speaker 5 (26:33):
I saw that this morning.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
That's right.
Speaker 8 (26:36):
Did you drive by the JW this morning, Mark.
Speaker 5 (26:38):
Yes, it's not. It's not completed yet, but.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Yes, okay, okay.
Speaker 8 (26:42):
So I would assume Buckner would be the fourth.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
For those that missed it, it says basically for the
city on top, for the boss. Underneath that obviously Jim Mersey,
and right now the picture currently is Taylor, Kenny, and
Quentin Nelson, and then underneath that for the shoe and
the Jim Mersey sig masure that you have seen. So, yeah,
i'd assume Buckner would be the fourth on that.
Speaker 5 (27:05):
Yeah, that's some to ask.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
You guys, who would be right now? If you had
to vote, who would be the face of the franchise?
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Right?
Speaker 5 (27:14):
Well, if you go off of that building, it's Jonathan
Taylor because he's front and center and he's in the middle.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
Of what I would say, he or Buckner, right, I'd
say Blue. Well, he's consistent.
Speaker 5 (27:23):
I was gonna say, honestly, that's probably a good answer.
Speaker 3 (27:25):
He's consistent.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
The fact that you can't name a quarterback is pretty I.
Speaker 7 (27:28):
Mean, who's the last quarterback to be on the side
of Lucasol Stadium. Did Rivers get it for a year
during COVID, I don't think, just.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Might have gotten a little bit. I don't know. I'd
have to go back and look.
Speaker 7 (27:37):
I mean seriously asking that. It's never a good sign
when you got to go back six seven years to
you know, find inside of Lucasos tamp Yeah, face to
the franchise. Yeah, I don't know. Probably I guess Taylor,
I don't know, maybe Nelson.
Speaker 4 (27:52):
Yeah, it'd be one of three, right, it'd be Taylor,
Nelson or Buckner.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
Right.
Speaker 8 (27:56):
It does seem like Quent Nelson.
Speaker 7 (27:57):
Then, you know this has been said during camp, and
I think it was a storyline a little bit in
BALTI more James on Tuesday.
Speaker 8 (28:01):
So I'll let you expand on this. But you know,
I do think Quentin Nelson. You know, he's definitely not.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
The most like vocal vocal, you know, in a media
setting after games, but it does seem like he has
tried to make a very concerted effort with that locker
room of we need to be some self creators and
from an energy standpoint, and you know I'm not breaking
a news here. You watch Quent Nelson play football oftentimes
he's one of the first ones down the field congratulating
(28:24):
guys things like that. So it just seems like it's
a little bit more emphasized from Nelson this season.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
It certainly seems that way. I do want to add,
you know, me and Quentin Nelson of a great relationship.
I'm gonna ask him to be in a TikTok later
the season to see how that goes over.
Speaker 5 (28:39):
Maybe after a win.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
Can you please warn the so either I can watch
it happen, or I'm going to be the one filming it,
or I can move.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
The other side of the locker like this TikTok might
be a murder stream if it depends on the depending
on the day. But no, I do think that he's
made a bigger effort to be a little bit more
vocal with his leadership because he's been a great leader
from what I understand in locker room, from like a
follow me example, But maybe you need a bit more
of that when there's been an instability at quarterback and
so even out in Baltimore, anytime anybody made a play,
(29:09):
he's one of the first ones to be yelling and screaming, laughing, jumping, whatever,
and also handling business, and so I think that Quentin
Nelson is a huge part of that equation when it
comes to giving guys confidence, and so it's obviously rubbing
off on the other guys, and I think they're taking
heed to what he has to say because we're talking
about most likely if he keeps up.
Speaker 5 (29:26):
This pace, a future Hall of Famer.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
Also, just in line with being the team leader, remember
that day last week when Grover Stewart does a little
extra with JT. Who's the first guy over there to
say hi to Grover Stewart like, hey, don't be doing
that stuff.
Speaker 8 (29:40):
Well, I first guy.
Speaker 5 (29:41):
Also has to do with size it is.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
But he was there quickly, I mean immediately he was there.
Speaker 6 (29:46):
Yeah, I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
I think that's more of.
Speaker 4 (29:50):
Us because there was nowhere near where he was to
begin with, was my point. Yeah, he got there in
a hurry. And he's always been kind of a quiet
team leader. He's always feeling to me, it feels like
he's always been that guy. So yeah, offensive line is
definitely something I'm gonna be looking forward tonight. And again,
just guys individual efforts. Are you where you're supposed to be?
Are you there?
Speaker 3 (30:08):
On time.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
Are you playing as hard as you can? Are you
winning your individual battles? That's really guys can do tonight.
It's just win their individual battles and be in the
right places at the right time.
Speaker 7 (30:16):
Do we get any defensive starters out there? That's a
good question because.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Numbers wise, I gotta have a feud, don't they?
Speaker 7 (30:23):
And I mean number wise, you can just play all them.
We got ninety guys in the roster. You don't have
to play you're starting a lot. Yeah, I mean, obviously
we're not gonna get Franklin or we're probably not gonna
get Buckner. I assume Ward and Kenny Moore would be nos.
But like, do you get cambin them? Do you get Lato?
Speaker 6 (30:39):
I think law too needs to revsed cambine them out
your pay, you know some of those things. Yeahavarious Ward
has been kind of.
Speaker 7 (30:45):
Because Shane wasn't as committal to the defense, no, and
talking about like his urgency wasn't there.
Speaker 8 (30:50):
And again, you are playing a new defense.
Speaker 3 (30:53):
Maybe two series for those guys.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
But even then, just kid, that's probably.
Speaker 8 (30:56):
What I would do, but that didn't sound like Shane.
Speaker 6 (30:57):
Yeah, even then, Cambina was saying they're they're not showing
much as is, and so do you wait the joint
practice a little bit more than that, And so it's
something to keep an eye on, for sure. I think
another person to keep an eye on too, as far
as positions go, is Jalen Carlais. He's been out with
the injury. I don't know if he probably I would
expect him to play to night. That is an open
linebacker here, But I think that he's has a legit
(31:18):
legitimate chance to supplan Jalen Carlis as the quote unquote starter,
mainly because Carlis himself has been through some injury issues
last year and he's been banged up this spring in
summer as well.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Yeah, and you know, you take a look at some
of those linebackers. Obviously he's are Franklin Is just coming back.
He had had an ankle a Loubi.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
What's the story on him with the ankle.
Speaker 7 (31:42):
He's a little further on the depth chart, you know,
I think it's a lot of He's a name that
you know, if you'd have told me the start of
the year, hey, Jalen Carlis might not start, chagarn Alubi
would probably be a name that I would have said, Oh,
he's starting, but he's not. I mean he's been passed
up by Cameron Groan, the LC guy, Austin and Jaki.
Who else am I missing? Oh Joe Joe Bachi.
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Yeah, well, by the.
Speaker 6 (32:01):
Way to see it the Jeff's question real quick, he
hasn't been hurt for a while. He was out there
practicing in the joint practicing.
Speaker 7 (32:05):
You see it on this list here twelve A is
the fireball team? Should the beverage cart just tail the
fireball team?
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (32:12):
Or maybe the fireball team should just tail the the
other way around?
Speaker 3 (32:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (32:16):
See, yeah, we have we got early ris my god,
where's the fireball cart?
Speaker 7 (32:22):
Let's go pancake, sausage fish fireball on ice seven fifty four.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
They want their fireballs, man, let's go by the way.
Speaker 8 (32:29):
Shout out, shout out to Carlton Mills. Over here, the
basketball hoop looks outstanding. It's currently getting set up.
Speaker 7 (32:37):
Right, So, James Boyd, while I head to the putting green,
you probably headed over to the hoop.
Speaker 5 (32:40):
Yeah, yeah, I should have brought on basketball.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
Although I do want to point out one of the
guys that's already in line for the Fireball is in
full New England Patriots gear today, and I'm a little
concerned with that right now, you know what, I'm a
little concerned with that.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
I like somebody that walks into Indyan territory though, like
very proudly wearing this.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Wow.
Speaker 7 (32:58):
Yeah, if I remember, if I remember correctly, there is
a lake by the twelfth.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
Green, So maybe we just give him one of those.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Why would you remember that, Kevin? Do you have any
experience with that?
Speaker 8 (33:09):
There are some highs here, but there are there are
also some lows.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
Are you gonna be looking for any golf balls when
you get back over there at.
Speaker 8 (33:15):
The Legends Golf Course.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
This is one of the dark days in Boston sports history.
Speaker 8 (33:21):
Isn't every day?
Speaker 3 (33:22):
Thank you? One of the darkest time.
Speaker 8 (33:23):
By the way, Mark, that was some lovely caddyshack to
introduce the show to that.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (33:27):
He always does a great job.
Speaker 4 (33:29):
We are hanging out at the Fan Invitational along with
our friends at Franciscan in Health.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
We'll tell you all about that in a minute.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
It is a gorgeous perfect day for golf at the
Legends Golf Club. We'll tell you all about it next time.
Ninety three five and one oh seven five the fans.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Do.
Speaker 4 (33:44):
We have Nate Adkins on the phone line right now
as we get ready for the Colts preseason game for
the Ravens. A little bit later on tonight from the
Indie Star, he covers the team and joins us says
he often does here in the Payless Liquors hotline.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
Good morning, Nate.
Speaker 8 (33:58):
See if you were here, we'd let you definitely be
cheers in with me.
Speaker 3 (34:02):
You'd be good. You'd be there, right Nate.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
I'd be cheers in with you. I wouldn't love the
fact that someone put up a Kansas flag. That doesn't
make any sense to me, but I would be there
to cheer me Kevin for sure.
Speaker 8 (34:13):
Now, we did get a low down from Ted Bishop.
Speaker 7 (34:15):
He rattled off all the reasons these flags are up there,
and not to go through the whole like family tree.
But basically he's got connections to all of these schools.
Le connection Yeah, like family members, daughters, sons. They said
his grandson's gonna be a manager on the Purdue basketball team.
This year, the pro here At Legends went to Western Kentucky.
Speaker 8 (34:33):
Shout out Jack Doyle top top.
Speaker 7 (34:34):
So we have a little bit of explanation. Okay, on that,
I'm not falling totally. You are an Ohio State guy.
You've made that abundantly clear as your Buckeyes be my
irish in the national title.
Speaker 8 (34:44):
Your hatred for Kansas is where.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
I went to mis Zoo. So there's two teams for me.
So yeah, that correct?
Speaker 8 (34:53):
Yeah, yep, all right, that makes some sense, got it?
Speaker 3 (34:56):
Yep? That makes total sing Go ahead.
Speaker 6 (34:59):
I do want to pivot some more coach related news there.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Nay.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
We were out at practice and you saw what Aidy
Mitchell did to those Ravens defenders, and I would argue
that none of them can really seem a chance against him.
Speaker 5 (35:11):
What's the next step for Ady Mitchell?
Speaker 6 (35:13):
And what do you want to see from him tonight
assuming he plays in the preseason opener.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Yeah, that was a show he put on the other
day at the Ravens facility. Burnt toast, I believe, is
the phrase he gave to Wiggins when he burned him
on that fade route. And that's it's just encouraging to
see him stack these days. As they say, it's weird
to go from you know, first week of camp where
it felt like he couldn't catch the ball, and he
(35:39):
couldn't stay at his feet. To all of a sudden,
he is not only doing both of those, but he's
basically unuardable deep and along the sidelines and drew two
penalties the other day too. They just can't They just
can't handle him. And you see the confidence come alive
with some of that chirping. But we've seen that in
practice too, so we need to see that in the
game setting. And really not until the regular season hits
(36:02):
and teams are game planning against him, and you know,
crowds are real and all that stuff, where we really
going to know that, but it would be nice to
see it in a game setting. What I really want
to see tonight, since Anthony Richardson is starting and playing
for a quarter and a half before Daniel Jones comes in,
I want to see that deep ball get going for
both of them. So Adi Mitchell needs to show that
(36:25):
he can do that in a game setting that's a
little bit more real than practice, and Anthony Richson needs
to show that that part of his game is still
consistent in like last years than all when he's focused
so much on the short throws, and if they're able
to show a little bit more of that. That's going
to be huge for both of them, for Anthony winning
the job and for Ady Mitchell showing that he has
(36:46):
a role in this offense that they have to have
him on the field for. Because if you think about
it right now, they have three eight hundred yard wide
receivers coming back, and then they add Tyler Warren to
the mix. That's going to lower the pressure on Ady Mitchell.
It's amazing to think last year he finished fourth on
the team interceptions, even though he had the worst catch
(37:06):
percentage in the history of the franchise. It just showed
you how kind of bare the receiving options were after
those top three guys. So this year, you added Tyler one,
you bring back those receivers, You add a pass catching
running back. We will see how good he is, but
he has the skills. In DJ Ginnons, it's less pressure
on Adie Mitchell, but you still want him to have
(37:27):
a role. You want him to hit some of that
upside as a second round pick, and it's theoretically a
perfect fit for an offense that's going to run the
ball as much as they are, that's going to pull
safeties into the box to handle both Anthony Richardson or
Daniel Jones with Jonathan Taylor in those play action opportunities
to then go deep if he's one on one. What
(37:49):
we've seen in camp over the last week is that
he has a skill set that's just far advanced above
most cornerbacks in this league. Of course, we've got to
see him catch the ball. We've got to see him
smooth routs, get on the page of the quarterback, all
the things he didn't do last year. If he could
start to show some of those and just look like
he's maturing and developing in a lot of the football ways.
(38:11):
I mean, he still has all the upside to be
a big play player for this team, and it would
really raise the ceiling of an offense that I'm convinced
he is going to run the ball really well since
they have the two mobile quarterbacks in Jonathan Taylor, but
if they can add that part to their passing game
in addition to that, you know, this could all start
to work out for a player who's got all the
(38:32):
talent in the world, but you didn't show a lot
of it in the games last year.
Speaker 8 (38:36):
It's a voice in Nate Atkins live in Baltimore. Seven o'clock.
Speaker 7 (38:40):
You can hear it right here on these airways FOX
fifty nine locally from a TV standpoint night. I want
to get a little bit more into the quarterbacks. You
mentioned there you want to see a deep ball Richardson
and Jones. I definitely hear you out on the Jones part.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (38:53):
Richardson, I get what you're saying.
Speaker 7 (38:54):
We've yet to really see the deep ball uncorked maybe
a ton in camp, and you have questions maybe a
little bit in regards to the shoulder with that.
Speaker 8 (39:03):
I'd probably go the other way though with Richardson, like, yeah,
I know he can do that.
Speaker 7 (39:08):
Again, I get where you're coming from with the surgery
and everything and the soreness head in the spring, but
I'd rather see boring. I'd rather see sustained drive underneath accuracy.
Is the wider base hold up in live settings where
he can get hit. I think I'm more in that
boat with him in regards to how he looks tonight
on the field.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Yeah, I definitely get that. I mean, when we've seen
that in camp. We joked about how normally when a
receiver hits like a five yard outthrow in training camp
or quarterback hits it, we just kind of shrug it off,
but not with Anthony because that's the throw he couldn't make.
Dating back to the Cobby when he threw next to CJ. Strout,
he just could not hit outthrows for anything. And now
(39:51):
he's starting to and so that's what we wanted to
see coming in. We've seen a lot of it. I
just think as far as the quarterback competition goes, as
they take this into two preseason games, the separator is
going to ultimately be that upside because we know Daniel
Jones can hit those outthrows and those short throws and
complete passes, and that's that's why it stayed fairly close.
(40:12):
It feels like as you watch these two and it
doesn't feel like, you know, there's been a lot of
separation yet. I think the separation is going to come
with the deep ball because I just from what I've
seen from Daniel Jones' career and in training camp so far,
I just don't know how much that's in his back,
how much he's willing to do it, how much he
sees it. Early on, there's been opportunities where he's had
(40:34):
a guy like Adie Mitchell just win a route immediately
off the ball, and rather than throw it and aired
out down the field, he's going back shoulder, which can
still get you know, a twenty yard game, but not
those catch and run opportunities all the way down the
field that Alex Pearce was able to turn in last
year with Anthony Richardson. So we do know it's in
(40:54):
Anthony's bag and I've confidence it'll be back. I think
it's sort of a rusty, rusty deep ball right now.
After he took them off from throwing in the spring
and he spent all of his time away from the
facility focusing on the short passes and that's been their focus.
Sub confident it'll be back. I'm just thinking that once
it is back, if that happens as early as tonight,
(41:16):
i think this race is going to be over. And
in the earlier that it's over, the earlier they can
move on to building around one quarterback, having these receivers
work with one quarterback, and I think that's going to
be important for guys like Ady Mitchell and Tyler Warren
and DJ get into our young players that we saw
last year in the year before. When you switch quarterbacks
(41:36):
and you change the styles on them as passers, and
these two quarterbacks are very different. That just seems to
wear on players. So while I understand them making this
a competition and they want Anthony to earn it and
that all makes sense, at some point to tap into
this upside of this offense, I think they are going
to need to to have one guy and I would
(41:57):
I would like that to happen earlier than later.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Nate Atkins, and you start joining us Colts Ravens later
on tonight seven o'clock kickoff. We'll start our coverage at
four o'clock with JMV and then the Colts broadcast network
and Nate, I'm just curious, like what is the state
of the kicking game for the Colts right now, because
it just seems like we have no idea going into
the season what's going to happen.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
Yeah, it's it's two guys who are about as unproven
as a common So you know, out in trading camp,
Spencer Trader has been the better kicker from what we've
seen and what we've gathered from some of the numbers
that Brian Mason is always proud to share with us.
But you know it's he also said, especially since coordinator
Brian Mason said that, you know, he looks for kickers
(42:44):
to be at ninety percent this time of year where
there's the crowds and weather and all of that, and
Spencer's not quite there either, so they haven't had a
separation yet. That's where the preseason games are going to
really matter because it is more of a game setting
game situation. I think we're going to see them try
kicks and situations where in the regular season they will
(43:06):
go for it just Shanestiken's aggressiveness and the run game
personnel and doing the numbers, but they're going to have
those kicks in the preseason to try to get that separation.
And it's still going to be a wildcard heading into
Week one. We've seen this before where it's always gonna
do with kickers because we don't talk a lot about
them in training camp in the preseason, and then all
of a sudden, you're in Week one or week two,
(43:27):
and it's what everyone in the world wants to talk
about when it's not going well. And so I still
think that's out there kind of no matter how it goes,
because these guys are unproven and it is such a
mental confidence position. But I think if we see some separation,
especially in those longer kicks, that's going to matter because
that ended up being what hurt Matt Gay in the end,
(43:49):
is that he became reliable once he got healthy from
forty yards and in, but those deep kicks were just
never there, and it wasn't there enough to justify, you know,
a big contract to this guy. This is a different
situation where these guys are here on the cheap, so
it's it's not as much pressure on that and I
do think based on their lack of proven ability, that
(44:11):
will lead you know, Shane Stike into Ford even more.
But there's gonna be moments where they're going to want
to get three points when you know, it's fourth and
eight and they're you know, they're at the thirty two
yard line or something like that. So it is an
important position. And I think these two preseason games, as
much as they'll tell us about the quarterbacks, I think
they'll tell us a lot about the kickers as well.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Last one for me, Nate, this is more of just
on the Baltimore scene. What food are you trying? Later on,
let's end on that note. You know, I know you're
always trying to get me to try things. Were on
the road together and sometimes look at you like you're crazy,
because I'm like, I'm not going that far. But in Baltimore,
what are you looking forward to grab it to eat
later on today or maybe after the game.
Speaker 2 (44:58):
Yeah, I'm looking I'm looking to get some crab I
know you had some of that the other night. I
did not indulge in those, and I kind of regret
that at this point. And so whenever you come out
to Maryland, Maryland crab is the is the thing to
go with. So that's what I'm looking for. I think
you enjoyed those the other night, not the catfish. So
uh so I take that recommendation to heart, and so
(45:19):
I think it's gonna it's gonna be pretty good once
they get some crab cakes.
Speaker 6 (45:23):
Yeah, I went filling a catfish and gris soggy catfish?
Speaker 5 (45:26):
Not it, Kevin, Crab.
Speaker 7 (45:27):
Cakes and football sounds better than catfish soggy gris.
Speaker 5 (45:32):
That wasn't it. That was a little so much going
on that day.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
Nate, thanks for stopping by, man, I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
Yeah, thanks for having me.
Speaker 4 (45:39):
You bet Nate Atkins, the Indie Star on the Payless
Slickers hotline.
Speaker 3 (45:43):
So that was the highlight of your trip to Crabcakes.
Speaker 6 (45:45):
Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm I'm simple man. You go
on the road and someone tells you this is what
this place is known for.
Speaker 5 (45:51):
You order that
Speaker 8 (45:54):
That's what Maryland does
