Speaker 1 (00:00):
You were listening to the Best of the Fan Morning
show on ninety three five and one oh seven five
The Fan all controversy. Here are they cornflies? Are they
sweat bees? Are they hover flies? They appear to be
some variation of all of the above. I'm not sure
exactly what the ones are here in Indiana, but they
all seem to be in North America, and they all
(00:21):
seem to just be harmless. And in the way, that's
that's the.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Big thing, because I thought they were bees, and I
thought I was gonna get stung, probably ten times over
the last couple of days out there in the hot sun.
But nevertheless, I think my focus more on the players
rather than the bees, and so I'll take that or over,
you know, hopefully the pain of getting stung. I'll only
been stung once in my life, and once was enough.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Now, I think we were talking about that a couple
of weeks ago. I had took a long time ago,
took a drink of one of those orange crushes and
there was a bee inside of it and got it
right on the top of the mouth. That was not
a good Everybody was out how all the things take place,
and it was almost it felt like a little bit
except for not being under the lights JB. It felt
like another controlled scrimmage to a certain extent for Colts
(01:05):
versus Gults.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, a lot of team periods yesterday, which is obviously
my favorite type of practice to watch. I don't really
enjoy watching any practice, to be honest, but if I'm
gonna watch it, I would like to see the closest
thing to real football, which is what we saw yesterday.
And despite a couple of guys being out Alec Pierce
wasn't available yesterday, he got the growing injury going on.
Nick Cross wasn't out there. I did think that one
of the highlights of yesterday, and Kevin can probably speak
(01:28):
to this. Hunter Wohler, I think had a couple of
nice Hayes Philip for Nick Cross and so Ken Derry
and you know, Leu and Arumo. After practice made us
temporary expectations a little bit. He was saying, hey, he's
got a long way to go. But I do think
that Hunter Waller was kind of proven that he can
be perhaps more than just a special teams guy and
someone you can trust or perhaps rely on if you
get in a pinch.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, my eyes and ears kind of perked up a
little bit when it was late in practice and during
one of the team reps, Tyler Warren split out wide
what way wide, like almost outside of the numbers and
said him was Hunter Wooler. Woalder is getting the start
right now because, as James said, Nick Cross dealing with
a hip injury. So it's missed the last probably three
(02:09):
days of practice. So yeah, draft pick versus draft pick,
first rounder versus seventh rounder. And you know, I thought
Anthony Richardson did the thing that you would expect a
quarterback to do. He looked at that matchup pre snap
and said, all right, I'm gonna throw it up to
my first round pick there at tight end, and he
gave Warren a fifty to fifty opportunity and Hunter Wooler
was in honestly perfect position to knock the ball away.
(02:32):
It was a great play by Waller down the field.
And again that was a play that you know, is
a little different than where we've seen him utilize. So
it's maybe in some sub packages he could get involved.
And you know, we've talked about him now for several weeks.
He's not just a seventh round pick. It's fighting for
a roster spot. He's literally trying to fight for a
defensive role week one against the Miami Dolphins, and I'll
(02:54):
be curious to see if he carves out something in
the sub package role.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
How you guys feeling about starting center at this point
in time, Well, I.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Think Tanner Bordalini is the guy there. Yeah, right now,
I think go ahead, and you know Sharpien Spencer Schrader
is your kicker, and then go ahead, And I don't
know if it's full on Sharpie, but definitely in Penn,
I would put Tanner Bordalini as your center. It's unfortunate
Danny Pincer has been a little banged up here over
the last week or so, so I think that has
impacted the competition. But right now, and really in general,
(03:26):
with your offensive line, James, I know the secondary is
dealing with tons of injuries right now, but your O
line has arguably been the healthiest position group of any
hereut training camp. And you look around the league right
now and there are teams dealing with tons of injuries
offensive line related. But I mean Braden Smith Smiths what
(03:49):
one day? Yeah, Bernard Rayman, I don't think has missed
any I can't recall Quinton Nelson being out. I can't
recall Mat Gonzalez being out, and again Danny Pinter a
little bang up. But Tanne BORDERLINI I think a lot
of people thought he would be the starter anyway. So
when you talk about that five man group of the
offensive line, I would say it's been one of the
healthier training camps I can remember.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, And honestly, respect to Bernard Ryman, because if I
got paid that much money, I know that's a bit
of a jinks. Stare would certainly blame him something happens.
They've never been practice jings. I actually don't know. I
feel like I only say it or when it doesn't
mean that I jink something. It's only if you jinks it,
because I've gotten that a lot the playoffs with the Pacers.
(04:31):
When I said like, oh, they're gonna win this game,
people were like, you shut your mouth right now and
they will win the game. And I'm like, do you
have no faith in your team at all?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Oh, Jake was gonna drop four letter words on Kevin
every time the five hundred came right, it's gonna beautiful weather,
There's no chance for it.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Weather was beautiful, So does that mean, it wasn't a jinx.
Was it beautiful? Though it's not this year's when Jake
and I did the show.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Okay, okay, okay, I thought you meant like this past year,
I wasn't beautiful, but okay, fair enough.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
All right. So that's what's going on as far as
the Colts camp is concerned. Again, the Packers coming in
in a couple of days and another chance to evaluate
the two quarterbacks. And I was talking to a lot
of people and kind of taking a straw poll last
night as I was roaming up and down the sidelines,
and kind of we talked about it yesterday. Unless something
really dramatic happens, don't you kind of have to start
Anthony Richardson, don't you at the beginning of the year.
(05:16):
Unless Daniel Jones is just heading shoulders above him in
these final two preseason games.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
I could go either way. Honestly, I could see from
a fan standpoint and from a Chris ballor standpoint, Yeah,
start Anthony Richardson. He's got the upside, he was drafted
high a couple of years ago. He's supposed to be
our guy. He has not proven that at all just yet. However,
as I keep saying, I think that same stike end
(05:44):
is closer to being fifty to fifty on these quarterbacks
then most want to give that credit for And it's
because one, he's more available than Anthony Richardson already we've
seen that throughout the off season. And then number two,
he's probably more consistent, and I think the safety factors
something we can't overlook with Daniel Jones. Yes, it might
be more boring football, but boring from Shane's perspective or
(06:07):
even from just the offense in general's perspective, they might
welcome that because in their minds internally, the Colts believe
that if they just get average quarterback play, and I
will put average it like, if they just think that
they have the eighteenth or seventeenth best quarterback in the league,
they'll be a playoff team. That's what they're asking for.
They're not asking for greatness, They're just asking for competency,
(06:29):
and Anthony has not shown that throughout the first two
years of his career at at extended rate. There's been moments,
but there hasn't been elongated moments.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
James, Off of that point, I want to go back
something you brought up yesterday on the Athletic Mike Sando
had a piece on quarterback tiers. Yeah, and you brought
this up a little bit. Richardson and Jones were virtually
right next to each other on the.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
List you want to kick out of this. So the
list in order of these quarterbacks, it goes Daniel Jones thirty,
Joe Flacco thirty one, Anthony Richson thirty two. Oh there's
your last three cults A nice.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Colt sandwich there, Yeah, serve that at the State Fair.
But I thought I need it. I thought the quotes
on Daniel Jones were interesting, and it kind of goes
back to the point that you just made. One of
these defensive coordinators that Sando interviewed goes Jones could be
like the twenty twenty four version of Sam Darnold with
(07:28):
the defense, running game, and the right coordinator. And when
I read that quote, I thought to myself, I feel
like Shane Steichen endorses that quote like no other of
Hey wait a minute, we're gonna come here, We're going
to be an improved defense. We're gonna give him Jonathan Taylor,
one of the best running backs in the league. And
(07:48):
I'm bullish on myself as a play caller, like, does
Shane believe that? And I thought it was also interesting
that Sando pointed out of all the people he interviewed,
and James correct me, Im wrong, he interviews like GMS
coaches and coordinators. Yes, he pointed out that the voters
overwhelmingly thought Jones would win the starting job. Yes, and
again he's interviewing like minded Shane stykeing people. And so
(08:12):
that's where I do continue to say, you know, Jeff
just asked you, well, I mean, Jones has got overwhelmingly
be better. I would disagree with that. I'm probably a
little bit more on the no, no, no, Shane Syken is
more open minded to Daniel Jones than people I can
truly admit. And as we fast forward to Saturday, and
again I would disagree with that. I would say, no,
you got to figure out that Richardson, right, That's where
(08:33):
I would go. But we have to live in the
colt shoes. I look at Saturday and think to myself,
does Richardson have to play well Saturday? Because last Thursday
was unquestionably a knock on Richardson. However you want to
slice it, that was not a good Anthony Rick.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
He made a mistake that cost him some injury and
once again was missing time.
Speaker 3 (08:49):
Well, I would argue how he made the mistake was
the costly. It's not just that he got hurt, it
was that in a game that could be a strip
sack in your own territory boom and can you trust
god line of scrimmage? If he has another subpar performance
in a preseason game, what does that say to the
coaching staff that's now two games and two subpar performances
(09:10):
in the month of August? Is that too much to
overcome in this competition? That is a real thought that
I have going into Saturday.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
But it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch
and see how it all plays out. To be the
best thing to happen would be if both guys go
out and play pretty good football, keep this thing going.
I don't know that we necessarily want a definitive answer
after the green Bay game. If they both go out
and play.
Speaker 5 (09:31):
Well, do the best thing. At some point you want
to say be able to play well, don't you Well?
Part of me is like, do you want to just
commit to one for that Cincinnati game? Then let that
guy get a full half, maybe even come out for
the first series of the third quarter and get a
true dress rehearsal there so he can watch this competition
to continue deeper into the month of August, because at
(09:53):
some point you want to flip the script and say, hey,
here's Miami Dolphin game plan.
Speaker 3 (09:59):
Let's give one quarterback those reps.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
So I hear what you're saying, and I don't necessarily disagree,
but I do wonder. Okay, when do you if you
name a starter, let's say after the Green Bay game,
when do you move into like asset management. Would you
play them in the Cincinnati game if you know it's
going to be your guy, because obviously the risk is
if you play off whole first half and he gets
(10:21):
dinged up he being Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson. And
let's say the fourth series. Was it worth it or
do you need to or do you think Kevin, that
those reps are valuable for the development of either quarterback,
no matter who you name as the starter.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Yeah, I look at it and don't think there's a
massive separation between either. So I would be fine with
playing whoever is the starter. And this gets back to
you know something that I've said, probably a whole whole
lot since March. The problem, a problem for me in
this quarterback competition is you're giving two bad, inconsistent quarterbacks
inconsistent reps. So do either of them get tangibly better.
(11:01):
So if you do name a starter, at least you
allow for I think one dress rehearsal so in a
moment against Cincinnati to see what you have there. That's
how I would probably handle it.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Here's the thing, though, if we're being honest with ourselves
at the end of the day, when they're looking at
film at the end of practice and they're going over
everybody and how they execute it and what they did,
does Shane Steichen feel good about his quarterback room in
general right now? Or does he deep down say to himself, Man,
we got a ways to go to get these guys
where we need him to be. That's the question on that.
(11:33):
What do you mean by that? Does he feel good
about his comfortable about his quarterback room, like whether it's
Daniel Jones or whether it's Anthony Richardson, does he say
to himself, I think we're gonna be okay right now.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
No, he can't say that at all. They can't say that.
So he sees him play in the regular season. That's
why I was kind of a little bit confused there.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
No, but just in general, is he thinking deep down, man,
I wish we had somebody else?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Well, yeah, I would definitely think they Well I put
it like this, every coach is gonna wish that they
had probably like a great quarterback. I mean, you look
at some of these players in the league, and like, man,
I would if I had Lamar Jackson, if I had
Joe Burrow. However, of the quarterbacks he has, will he
instill confidence in them? Yes, how but I don't think
that he's sold on either one. I don't think you
(12:20):
go to sleep at night thinking we got the franchise guy, like,
there's no way that's happening, so to feel good, I
don't know good as a.
Speaker 1 (12:28):
Just wonder if he goes to sleep saying to himself, man,
how are we going to make this work?
Speaker 6 (12:36):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
I mean, to your point of breaking quarterbacks, we're talking
neither of them cracked the top thirty.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Right, So I guess context schools to tell me maybe
you don't feel as good because you just don't know.
And I say that because there's upside with Anthony a
lot more, obviously Daniel Jones, because Daniel Jones played almost
seventy games in New York work in Mark's favorite number,
sixty nine wasn't the total number, and so he wasn't
(13:05):
able to up well, he wasn't able to necessarily, you
can clip that, Mark. He was not necessarily able to
sustain success. He had the one really good year they
made the playoffs, and obviously he had that great game
against the Colts actually a couple of years ago to
clinch that playoff birth However, there hasn't been much outside
of that to feel good about. And then last year
was a disaster in New York, and then for Anthony,
(13:27):
last year was a disaster in Indianapolis. So if you're
asking me that if he should feel good, no, he
should not feel good. But at some point, I guess
you just have to roll with what you got and
try to find confidence in that.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
At a certain point, those are your quarterbacks. And I
think you're right. You roll with what you got and
what you have. But you know, you always wonder in
the in the quiet moments that he has when he's
driving home at nights, think, oh, man, if we'd just
done this or we had just done that, but maybe
they believe in still the potential of Anthony Richardson. The
physical ability is clearly still there. And I was watching yesterday, Kevin,
you and I were talking about it. He was throwing
(13:58):
some pretty nice football.
Speaker 6 (13:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Yeah, I think outside of you're a family member of
Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones, you would want a different
quarterback situation.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
That's kind of where we're at right now.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Yeah, But again, I thought yesterday you would have wanted
a strong quarterback day given the banged up made tri
your secondary, and I think got that Jones I had
in twenty one to twenty seven. I think eighty had
one drop James Jalawnie Woods maybe had another. Yeah, So
again I thought a rather efficient day from Daniel Jones.
Continues to be a lot of underneath stuff Richardson. I
(14:31):
thought the interception by Tavarious Ward was just a gift
and really probably the first true gift we've seen Richardson
throw of the defense in a while.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
You jakes him, Yeah, that's how jas' were, Kevin, if
you were asking JS, but not even no, I'm just
believer in petty, but I'm not gonna lie Kevin. When
we threw that pick, I did think of you, and
I was like, Wow, they're gonna ruin my boy's point. Gosh,
did you really I did think about that.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
Can you imagine if I had that much control?
Speaker 2 (14:58):
No, not the jetlemen that much control. And I thought
it was just funny because I'm like, he just praised
you guys for not turning the ball over. And he
goes out there and those the worst pick you've seen
in camp, which, in fairness to the defense, it was disguised.
I think pretty well.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
I'll never forget Jacoby Verssett. He had a stretch like
one of the longest and cults franchise history without a pick,
and I had tweeted it out like before a game
for like five straight games, and finally, after like the
fifth game, he threw the pick.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
You probably got flooded with people saying the.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
Next day, in no way in the locker room, he
literally points me, he goes you jinks me, and first
what's second? I want to be like, what about the
previous four games when I tweeted out your interception streak?
But Jacoby's sense of humor probably wasn't going to go.
Speaker 7 (15:39):
He is a.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Business man, see you know what, I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
I'm here now.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
I'm your backup. So that happens this this upcoming season.
I'll be in the back, you know, not too close
because I don't want to, you know, be in the mix,
but I'll be there cheering you on.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
By the way, I think I think you are that powerful, Kevin.
I love you. That's why, that's why you're here. I
love it.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
By the way, I think we might have a Rick
Carlisle appearance coming up tomorrow around eight o'clock, so we'll
confirm that later today. But uh, well, summer chat with
the PACER's head coach. Where Carlisle has been up to
this summer.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
Flying planes, playing piano.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
I don't know. I feel like he's probably done something
that's a bit more unique, and I feel like he
always tried something new. So maybe i'll uh, you know.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Had up to match you, peach you or something like that.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Yeah, I will say this. This is this is a
funny moment. I got a text from a from Chad
Buchanan yesterday Pacers GM and and I don't know, I
have to check and see he might have stopped by
Colts practice or something, because it was kind of a
random text and he goes, the job you're doing right now?
It is way too hot for that. So I texted
him back and I was like, yeah, I'm missing that
(16:41):
my pacers time and control practices right now. He said, yeah,
it's seventy two always you know over at a you know,
Saint Vincent. So that was a funny little interaction there,
and I hope he and uh Rick are doing well
this off season.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
Looking forward to that. In the meantime, you can get
back to this two nine ten seventy on the fan

a smart speaker at home, don't you, James, You need
to say alexa y one O seven five to the fan.
Speaker 2 (17:21):
You know it's crazy. I actually don't have a smart speaker.
I have a Bluetobe speaker, and you know what shout
out to the UE Mega Boom. I have had this
Bluetooth speaker. This is my freshman year of college, which
is twenty fourteen and is still going great, So that
is a great product.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Can anybody asks you to turn it down with the
apartment ever.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
No, I'm actually pretty courteous. I think it's a neighbor.
I might have it loud, but not like super duper loud.
I don't think you can really hear it outside of
like my apartment. I'm not that type of person. I
actually hate that when I come home and I'm like, man,
you people are not very you know, kind with the music.
I have a guy on the hall and I don't
know if he's like just hard hearing or something like that,
but man, his TV is loud. So I'm glad the
(17:59):
man apartment as the few doors down.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Sidney Sweeney is a Colts fan? Is this real?
Speaker 1 (18:03):
What do we beleeve come from?
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Do we believe everything that these people say in the
text chain?
Speaker 6 (18:08):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (18:08):
It is on the internet, so at your own.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Risk, one of these texts here. Can we get to
the fact that Sidney Sweeney is a huge Colts fan?
Speaker 1 (18:16):
That would be outstanding?
Speaker 3 (18:17):
And then there's a follow up there about what she
would do if the Colts won a championship. But I'll
probably leave that there.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yeah, I'm looking. I'll just googled this and here's the
AI overview, which says there's no indication the actress Sidney
Sweeney is a fan of the Indianapolis Cults. Well, that
came and died pretty quickly.
Speaker 4 (18:34):
I just looked up Sidney Sweeney on Twitter. Boy that
that's a rabbit hole. That's probably gonna get me sending
an HR meeting.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Just beak careful which which pages you click on.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
I just I typed in Sidney Sweeney. I can't help
it with these pervs put up here.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Uh, we like having our own. Maybe she'll show up
and be a celebrity of the game. Maybe she'll maybe
she'll hit the anvil. Looks like.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
It looks like the rumors started because it says Sidney
Sweeney and colds Wide receiver Alec Pierce have quote quietly
been hanging out. But that was like last year. So
are we is someone going on?
Speaker 8 (19:08):
Here?
Speaker 3 (19:08):
Is what Sidney Sweeney?
Speaker 4 (19:09):
That was over a year ago, though, So I feel
like that's fake.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Checking out the fan text line here three one, seven,
six nine, eight and feel free when you send your
text to phone number. Good lord, I didn't say the
last four digit's just the first three to give you
an idea where he's from. Uh, Shane was brought in
to turn this raw talent into a quarterback. He'd be gone.
He'd be gone too at the end of the year,
no doubt. So yeah, it's play the best quarterback or
(19:35):
be gone? Right or does that become an indictment on
Shan Stike jo He's still win it?
Speaker 7 (19:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
I think that's his main giants.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
One way or the other.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Well, and that's what makes things so confusing here. Yeah,
Chris Ballard probably want Anthony richardson, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
The talent development and all that. But if I'm Shane,
I'm thinking play whoever can help me get to the playoffs.
And honestly, if you missed the playoffs for a fifth
straight year, everyone's jos should be on the line. It's
hard to believe it's been that long, four straight years
off the playoffs, and most most teams GMS coaches and
I know Shane has been been here that long or
(20:10):
as long as Chris, but most coaches, if you missed
the playoffs for a four straight year, which will be
the case if this was Shane. They're not getting other
chance to run it back.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Correct, I would argue it shouldn't have gotten to this far.
But nonetheless, here we.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Are, James. One of our textas is promoting you to
a big media conglomerate. You're too talented to stay here
for very long. How about that.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
I appreciate the love.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
You know, have another iteration of the morning show?
Speaker 2 (20:35):
You know, you know what's crazy? You did get that
question recently. But I'll tell you all, I'm not going anywhere.
Come on, I'm not leaving. No, I've had I have
people asking, you know, ourprotunays have opened up. I have
no reason to leave. I love being here. I've enjoyed
it and uh yeah, and I do think the show
has forced me to kind of expand my Indiana sports
(20:57):
and knowledge a bit. So I'm enjoying kind of dibbling
dabbling everything. And obviously at this point in the year,
we're all cults. So I'm looking forward to Thursday's joining
practice for sure.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Looking forward to hearing from people all day long. As
the text line is new. As you get in put
your name on there. At the very end, we'll put
you in the saved column, and moving forward, we'll know
exactly who sent what text and we can give you
credit for that. Sometimes I think people want credit. Sometimes
I think they like flying under the right arm, being
a little anonymous, which is fine with me too, James.
However it works, it is. You can still use the
(21:29):
chat on the YouTube, so I talked about that a
lot yesterday, and I have no problem keeping that up.
I just want to make sure that people stay respectful
to some extent. It's okay to have opinions, but it's
be some nice to some people too.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
I mean, look at this, I don't know about millions, Kevin,
but I'm hoping I can get a couple more coins
here and a few a.
Speaker 1 (21:48):
Lot of zeros for James.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
No, no, it's been great, and honestly, I got a
chance to talk to somebody about that actually at the
golf outing. You know, Hey, are you leaving. I'm like, no,
I'm not leaving, brother. I think Indianas in the blood
at this point.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
I almost don't want to disturb you. James Boyd.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
That was the anthem right that had to be played
at every single high school gym before you got out
there to play in a game.
Speaker 4 (22:14):
Well, I feel like this is the anthem for the
Brewers because they just don't lose, and that's all they've
been doing lately. It's driving me crazy. I told Joel,
I'm jealous with envy, but uh, you know, gotta respect it.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
You don't have to respect it. You can hate.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
I respect it.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
It's not the It's not the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
It was the Cardinals. I absolutely hate. Honest, the Brewers
are doing it well. The man joins us on the
paylesslikers hotline. Right now, he is the cults insider for
the Indie Star Joli ericson. Also, maybe are you America's
number one Brewers fan or just the number one Brewers
fan in Indianapolis.
Speaker 6 (22:45):
No, there's no way I'm the number one Brewis fan.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
I no way stop that you are easily number one
Brewers fan. I watched you watch day games in front
of me in the media room.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
All the time.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
People are people are watching a game, yes to.
Speaker 1 (23:02):
Trying to figure out how they can get him down
the slide with Bernie.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
They need you down head first down the slide. Unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
Good morning, Joe, how are we doing today? We're getting
near the end of training camp. How are you holding up?
Speaker 6 (23:14):
We are getting any into training camp? This is this
has been a hot one. I'm not gonna lie. I know,
I know the one really cares about the temperature of
training camp. This This has been one of the hotter
ones at Grand Park, right if I remember correctly.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
It's it feels like it's been hot, that's for sure.
And that's been I don't know, good, bad or otherwise
for the team. But as a camp as a whole,
you've seen a number of these things right now, how
would you classify this camp so far?
Speaker 6 (23:45):
I think I think the stuff that sticks out to
me is just you know, I don't know that you
have a clear front runner at quarterback. I think you
probably would rather have a clear front runner at quarterback.
One of the other things about this camp is just
everything that's happened at cornerback with the injury sticks out.
You know, you you taught coming into this camp that
(24:06):
you'd you built the cornerback position deep enough that you
know you could weather a couple of injuries. But said
everybody got hurt. So that's another thing that that sticks out.
It's it's been a camp in terms of and it's
hard to know you know what this means or doesn't mean. Uh,
it's been a camp with with more competition, I think
(24:29):
than than ones we've seen in recent memory. You know,
I don't remember having a couple of scrimmage practices where
they pretty much just go eleven on eleven all day
like they did yesterday, or they did the nighttime practice a.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
Couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 6 (24:42):
So those that's the stuff that sticks out to me.
A lot of it is camp is about fighting the roster,
and they've got some interest thrown at him from a
roster perspective that I don't think they were expecting.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
Joel A.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Erickson from the Indanapolis staris with us here on the
Payoffs Slickers hotline. Joel, does Anthony Richardson need to play
well on Saturday night Saturday afternoon, I should say, to
earn the starting job.
Speaker 6 (25:06):
I think he needs to play clean from a standpoint
of the making the right reads, knowing where the blitzes
are coming from, all that stuff. I've been thinking about
this ever since, ever since the play that he got
hurt on in Baltimore. But that's the thing that you know,
(25:29):
you I James, we can't really see in practice we've all,
you know, done our due diligence and charted every pass.
We know what the completion percentages are, we don't know
some of that operational stuff. If the ball went to
the right spot, if you read the corner the right way,
all that kind of stuff. That's the kind of stuff
that I think is could could be maybe the most
(25:52):
important thing for this quarterback competition, and it's something you
can't really see from the sideline camp.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Well, I will say this is Joe for listeners out there,
I called Joel coach Joel on the sideline because whenever
I don't understand something, it's him and coach Ventry, who
I'm like, Okay, both of you guys kind of know.
Obviously Ventury has a little bit more experience, but nonetheless
usually you guys know what's going on more than I
would say me. But on those lines, Joel, when we
were out there watching yesterday, what stood out to you
(26:20):
in particular when it comes to the down the field
throws that Daniel Jones was able to make and perhaps
some of the windows he was going to put some
of those passes into.
Speaker 7 (26:29):
Yeah, he's better.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
He's better when I number one, if he gets the
ball out early in the route. If he makes the
decision early and he if he's going for sort of
the more classic deep ball, the you know, the high
arching ball, that one's got to come out earlier. It
just seems like if it doesn't, he's gonna have a
it's gonna kind of be under thrown a little bit
(26:53):
weirdly though, that's kind of been an issue for Richardson
as well in this camp and then But the other
thing is, I think these are the as you're talking about.
He's better when he has to rip like a twenty
five yard shot down the field, and that creates an
explosive play too, But if he doesn't have to put
all the air under it and he's kind of looking
(27:14):
for that spot. I think that's the thing that sticks
out about Jones is if you get if Jones is
the quarterback, you have to create your explosives on that
kind of throw, I think more so than the high
arcing ball down the sideline.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
Talking to Joeli, Eric's and Indie Starr here on the
Fan Morning show on the Payless Lookers Hotline this morning,
Kevin and I and James were talking earlier about sometimes
it's hard to evaluate how the running game is going
in camp because people aren't going one hundred percent all
the time. How is the running game going? What kind
of vibe are you getting there?
Speaker 7 (27:46):
Well?
Speaker 6 (27:47):
I think you know, one of the things that sticks
out is just they've got you know, new guys at
center and cackle or a center and guard, I mean,
and some of that interior stuff. We've seen this before
in camp where Grover Stewart and de Force Butner kind
of make trouble for anything going up the middle there.
I think we've seen that again when those guys.
Speaker 7 (28:07):
Have been in.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
They've pulled off some big runs yesterday. But yeah, the
running game is one of those things that you don't
really get to see a ton of in camp, I think,
especially when Richardson's in there, but also when Daniel Jones
is in there. You know they're not they're doing some
of that stuff. I think they're gonna do more of
that as they get out of camp and into the
sessions that we won't see just to run the plays,
(28:33):
but you don't see what makes the plays go in
terms of the full contact Johnson Taylor breaking tackles, whether
or not arm tackle is gonna get broken or not.
You know, they blow things dead when a guy has
somebody lined up.
Speaker 7 (28:44):
That's not necessarily how a.
Speaker 6 (28:46):
Play ends during the regular season, so it's hard to tell.
You know, Johnson Taylor broke an actual seventy five yard
touchdown run yesterday. It's just kind of a reminder that
he's still Johnson Taylor. This is the guy that rushed
for six the more he's rushed for more than six
thousand yards in five seasons. But yeah, you don't get
a good hand on it. Richardson in particular, I think
that hurts the most because he's not supposed to be contacted,
(29:08):
and he's generally at his best when there's contact on
a running play.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Joel A. Erickson from The Star with the Seer on
the Payless Lickers hot line, Joel roster cuts two days
or excuse me, two weeks from today? Just one big
one ninety to fifty three. One roster cut question on offense,
one roster cut question on defense.
Speaker 6 (29:31):
How many offensive linemen do they keep?
Speaker 7 (29:33):
Traditionally Chris Ballard has really liked to keep a lot.
Speaker 6 (29:38):
I think ten is often the number. Do they feel
like they have ten guys? What does that do for
other spots? Because it feels like you could keep four
running backs, four tight ends. So do you keep all
those offensive linemen when you have potential needs at other
spots Defensively, I'm centered on that cornerback position now, and
(30:01):
and we'll probably get some information about what they think
about some of these injuries on cutdown day we'll find out,
you know, or or the day after we'll find out.
You know, our guys going on short term I rho
who gets does Johnson Edwards make this team now? The
undrafted rookie from Tulane who's been running with the first team,
(30:24):
and in the wake of all the injuries that that
that spot and how that shakes out. I think it's
hard to gauge because we just we don't know the
status is the timetables for Kenny Moore or Jalen Brent
or Juju Brds or Jalen Jones.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
So judging by that, it sounds like you're in the
same boat with me. I don't think Jilannie Woods versus
Will Mallory is a competition at all. I think Will
Mallory is definitely on the football team and Jolannie Woods
has got to climb to make the team.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
Yeah, I mean you just look at the rotations. Mallory
has is getting first team reps in practice, they rotate through.
Woods has mostly gotten the developmental or third team reps.
I don't know that there's been like a lot of
second team reps for him. And then Mallory's just had
a really really good camp. You know, you go back
(31:12):
to when this when this staff came in too. You know,
they don't really have any hissue of Jalonny Woods because
of the injuries. They do have some history with Will Mallory.
He was pretty good in twenty twenty three with Gardner
Minshew in a complimentary role. And then on top of that,
he's just he's had a really good camp.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
Joel, I want to pivot a bit to, you know,
perhaps the running back behind Jonathan Taylor.
Speaker 3 (31:37):
And I feel like I really thought you were gonna
say sweat.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Bees, no, no, no, no, the running back behind John Taylor.
I think that's an interesting sort of debate because I
don't know on the unofficial depth chart they have Tyler
Goodson as the number two running back, but we also
seen DJ Giddens get some of that responsibility as well.
Khalil Herbert's in the mix. How do you see that
perhaps shaken out or what have you seen so far
(31:59):
to give you an inkley of how it could shake out.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
I I think for the for the most part, I
think Tyler Goodson is going to make this team. I
think that that may surprise some fans. You know, you
bring in Herbert, you bring in you Drafka, Giddins, you
feel like maybe you move on there.
Speaker 1 (32:16):
But number one, I think.
Speaker 6 (32:18):
Tyler Goodson is a is a core special teams guy
for this team, which is when you get down to
the roster cuts you start looking at your fifty three
that those last eight to ten spots are all special
teams decisions. But on top of that, he's been running
as the second team running back for most of camp.
You know, he's he's got it's everything we've seen from
(32:39):
Goodson in the past. He's got more bursts explosives through
the whole than a lot than a lot of guys.
I think ultimately, once you get to the season, I
think that that's probably a Giddins role. But right now,
you know, Goodson needed to have a really good camp
and he has, and he's got himself in that run
in that number two spot.
Speaker 1 (33:00):
All always good to talk to you. Good luck with
the Brewers the rest of the way, and good luck
out at camp. I know the joint practices on Thursday,
and then everybody kind of settles into their normal rhythm.
So we're looking forward to keeping up with you then too.
Speaker 6 (33:13):
Yeah, you bet that's that's I keep trying to tell Mark.
It's it's still early August. You can't. You can't get
too high or too low on the baseball season.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
The team of the ten game win streak, talking down
to other fans, and that can't have a good day.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Man, fix the roof at your stadium the way have.
Speaker 1 (33:39):
A good one.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
You know what it's like.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
I'm gonna always look at me and.
Speaker 7 (33:45):
A little bit you need.
Speaker 6 (33:46):
I get it.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
Man, you're really good at baseball. I'm jealous of you.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Yeah, I'm gonna I hear you.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
I'm gonna hears out of ten game winning losing streak.
We'll be talking him off the ledge.
Speaker 2 (33:57):
That's true, but also, like could be any more cliche.
Never too high, never too low, Joel, you wouldn't reprint
that in any star if if a coach player told
you that, ever, don't tell it to me.
Speaker 1 (34:07):
Okay answers against jab and a basketball guy.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Really, I bet you those people must be texting you directly.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
You're getting a bunch of support there, I believe I am.
I bet that Aaron from Minnesota says, James Boyd gives
me Damon Stattamayer Mighty Mouse vibes, and that would give
Kevin Bowen fits.
Speaker 3 (34:28):
I'm just saying, look, you know what, Karen Godi, I'm
in the post.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Yeah. First of all, y'all gotta stop, you know, rocking
with people that aren't playing. Y'all need to match it up.
Anybody listening, line it up? Okay at this point, don't
jump on kb's bandwagon thinking he gonna save you, because
he gonna get cooked. And the rest of y'all need
to go ahead line it up too. Let's start that
the Fan Morning show one on one tournament. Anybody want
(34:53):
get them ready? I'm with you right there.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Let's do that.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
We'll do it, honestly, I'll be fun.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
That would be fun. Let's check in on the payloss
Lookers hotline right now and turn our attention to high
school sports, which you're getting ready to kick off pretty quickly.
Speaker 6 (35:06):
Here.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Kyle Nedderrip from The Indie Star joins us. Now, I hear.
You're a little bit of a gym rat too.
Speaker 8 (35:10):
You want to know this, Uh, turn the clock back
a few years and maybe, yeah, I'm not sure anymore.
Speaker 7 (35:17):
If I could, uh maybe one on one half court,
though I could, I could give it a go.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
You like it and a little make it take it.
You're good, You're good to go.
Speaker 7 (35:25):
I think so, I think I get my knee and
my niece leaves out.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
All he does. Uh, Kyle, it's that time of year again,
Like what do we have coming up right out of
the gate here pretty quickly?
Speaker 8 (35:38):
Yeah, we got high school football scrimmages on Friday, and
then the real thing gets going next Friday, so pretty
deep in the weeds on on a lot of high
school football preview stuff and uh, you know there's always
there's always something going on, but uh, but yeah, it
really kind of gets going here in the next uh
you know, the start practice really started last week, the
official start of practice, but everything kind of gets going
(36:01):
for real next week.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
He is the legend, Kyle lenderup where you are beyond
lucky to have him here Covin Preps. Gosh, it's got
to be nearly twenty years in the Circle City let's
start at the top of the class rankings. It appears
to be a relatively wide open year in six A.
Speaker 7 (36:16):
Kyle, Yeah, I would say so.
Speaker 8 (36:19):
I think, you know, you kind of start with the
defending champs always in my opinion, and that's you know,
Brownsburg was able to navigate a very difficult to run
last year. Every every game they had in the tournament
was within a touchdown. So but they bring back a
lot offensive firepower, I think ten starters on offense and
kind of a revamped defense, but a talented defense. So
(36:42):
you know, I think he kind of give them the
early nod. But but yeah, I think center Grove is
right there, having having you know, most of you know,
quite quite a bit of talent back, a new quarterback,
but super talented sophomore who I think is going to
be really really good Oscar Sloan, and then you know
Drake mcclerg and and a lot of good weapons on
(37:02):
the offense and a defense. I think it's going to
be better this year. But then after that, you know,
you've still got you know, a long list of teams
that I think will have a chance in a pretty
balanced year, Like Westfield has just been really solid year
and year out. You know, you look at what Crown
Point's done in the last couple of years. I think
they're a factor now to be you know, coming out
of that north side of the bracket. You know, Lawrence
(37:25):
North lost a lot, but also has some really key
pieces back from last year. They were probably the team
that a lot of people thought was gonna win it
last year and then lost that that heartbreaker to Brownsburg
in the regional by by one point. But but then
you know, a lot a lot of the you know
the stories too, are you know Decatur Central moving up
from after winning five A state championship to six A.
(37:48):
You know, so they're they're plugged into that Cathedral spot
where Cathedral moves.
Speaker 7 (37:52):
Down to five A.
Speaker 8 (37:52):
So you know, you've got some different storylines this year
with the schools moving classes a little bit, so you know,
Newpoal moving up from four to five A and then
Herrita Chills from three to four A, so you get,
you know, three defending champs in those classes moving up
a class.
Speaker 7 (38:08):
So that'll be something to watch for too.
Speaker 8 (38:10):
But Decator Central how they fare and six A will
be interesting as well.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
Yeah, Kyle, you were saying Lawrence North lost a lot
last year. I was like, what do you mean? And
then he continued, I was like, they lose a lot.
They were pretty good team, but talent wise, yes, I
understand where you're coming from. The question I have for
you is related to more of the individual players. We
saw Mark Zachary take on mister football last year, and
obviously he's a great player. He's a great basketball player too.
On that Ben Davis team who won stayed a couple
(38:37):
of years ago. So on the short list of players
seniors that is because they're the only ones who can win
mister football. Who do you see kind of being in
that mix of that conversation.
Speaker 8 (38:47):
Yeah, I think, you know, in fairness to you know,
the defensive guys. I actually talked to JJ Finch about
this the other day. You know, he you know, he's
got all these great numbers as a defensive player, but
a lot of times it's the offensive guys, as we know,
kind of like the Heisman Trophy, where you know, you
almost have to be an offensive guy, or even if
you're a defensive guy, you know, play some offense to
(39:09):
be able to win. Like Mark Zachery, he was technically
a defensive guy, but but also did a lot receiving wise,
So if you're going to be a defensive guy, you
probably need to play some offense. So you know that
being said, I think you kind of start with the
offensive you know players, and you know, and I think
JJ Finch will definitely be in the mix for defensive line,
you know, mister football. But uh and and probably could
(39:31):
be in the in the you know, top running for
the award. But I would start with probably Jeded Goldsberry
from Heritage Hills. He's he plays quarterback. He'll be a
defensive guy at Old Miss, but he's put up a
lot of stats as as an offensive player. They won
a championship last year. Like I said, they were three
A now moving to four A. But he's got great numbers, uh,
(39:53):
you know, like I said, going to play in the SEC.
So you know, he's a talented player. Kashmir Hicks from Decatur.
I think it's another guy going to IU. You know that,
you know, staying in state sometimes helps. But he's another
guy plays offense and defense, had a great season last year.
Super explosive player who can score in multiple ways. And
(40:14):
then another one, you know, I think should be listed
as Deacon King from Westfield who is going to Northern
Illinois and he plays offense and defense as well, but
you know, plays running back and running backs a lot
of times, a position where you know you're going to
get pretty good stats, especially with the offensive line that
Westfield you know has pretty much year and year out
(40:34):
and the good again this year.
Speaker 7 (40:36):
So you know, he's a guy who ran for almost.
Speaker 8 (40:38):
Fifteen hundred yards last year, and I think he's going
to be, you know, a guy who plays both ways
again but will probably be their primary running back at
least as the stands now. So you know, I think
those guys are probably names you could start with, you know,
Josh Rains, another player from New Palace or running back. Also,
he's going to have big numbers, I would say again
this year, you know. And there's a there's a few
(41:00):
other names too that that I think, uh, you know,
and you never know, you know, as the year starts
and then things happen and you know, guys rise, rise up,
and then you kind of take another look at it
at the end of the regular season. But you under
stands now, those are probably a few of the names
to look out for as the season starts.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
Kyle That and Rip Indy starts joining us on the
pay list lickers Hotline. Kyle, you bring up some great
storylines early on about teams that are changing classification or
some of the individual guys they're going to be watching.
Is there a kind of an under the radar story
out there that you're really looking forward to watch develop
as the season moves along?
Speaker 7 (41:36):
Uh? Yeah, I was.
Speaker 8 (41:37):
You know, one one thing to watch is probably how
and this is probably not for this year, and it's
something that's been you know, talked about a lot. Is
the the new transfer rule and how that you know,
affects things. I don't know, it's going to be a big,
big thing this year, and honestly, you know, it's it's
Transfers have been happening since the you know, one hundred
years ago. You know, it's not it's not that unusual
(41:58):
to see players move places, but it does change the
ability of you know, freshman and sophomores to change if
they see fit. And a lot of times maybe we
not we may not even know about those those players
who they may not be an actor where they're at, and
then they end up being a you know, end up
being a better player somewhere else. So you know that's
maybe something under the radar, not necessarily related to the
(42:19):
playing field, you know, I would say on the playing field.
To me, it's you know, kind of that the story
of like who who who are some of the surprise teams?
I think, like you know, and nobody would call Carmel
a surprise team probably any year. But you know, I
am curious how Kevin writes a second tenure at Carmel goes.
I think that's one of the more interesting stories to
(42:41):
me is how they you know, what kind of season
they have and how Kevin you know, kind of does
as a high school coach again after he's been you
know what, I guess technically was a high school coach
dim academy, but it's just a different, you know, different
not Indiana high school football. So you know, he's been
out of it for a little while. So him coming
back in I think is sort of exciting for definitely
(43:01):
for Carmel and I think for high school football as
a whole. But you know, they were, you know, a
team that kind of struggled the last couple of years.
Speaker 7 (43:10):
And you know, skin he get it going again.
Speaker 8 (43:13):
I think is will be interesting and they and they
have a really tough schedule in you know, starting out
Week two they play Westfield at home and that should
be an awesome crowd and a great game. But really
curious to see how they look this year under Kevin Kyle.
Speaker 3 (43:29):
Last one from me, And I know you've written on
this and I know it's a hot button topic, and
you just brought up, you know, the new transfer rule.
Kai McGrew basketball player, for those unfamiliar, one of the
top ranked kids in the junior now senior class here
in twenty twenty six, Bless you, James. He transfers from
Ellen to Fishers, and I believe the ISSA has ruled
(43:53):
limited eligibility, so that means he will play jv really
until the end of the season in his final year
of high cool basketball. Uh, could you fill our audience
in that maybe have have have missed this? Is this
strictly just he transferred to Fishers like too early. If
he would have waited for the new rule to go
in place, then he could have been playing varsity.
Speaker 7 (44:13):
Is that?
Speaker 3 (44:13):
Do I have that story correct?
Speaker 7 (44:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (44:16):
I mean not necessarily, he probably would have been under
the new rule, you know, so he yeah, he did
transfer before June first, which was the date when the
new rule went into place, so you know, he was
that that transfer was processed by the old rule, and
you know, under that rule.
Speaker 7 (44:34):
They found that, you know, I guess they they found.
Speaker 8 (44:37):
That, you know, he should have limited eligibility, which basically
means if you got a Division one player playing JV,
which doesn't really make a lot of sense, you know,
as far as.
Speaker 7 (44:46):
Like what you know, what he would want to do.
Speaker 8 (44:49):
Obviously the competent's not, you know, going to help get
you ready for college. But yeah, they so that, as
I understand it, that is being appealed, and I don't think
that appeal has happened just yet or been you know,
it hasn't hasn't changed the ruling on it just yet,
so we'll see what happens with that.
Speaker 7 (45:10):
I would say, you know, if he would.
Speaker 8 (45:11):
Have transferred after June first under the new rule, because
seniors aren't you know, seniors would have to sit out
thirty days from the start a competition, so basically you're
missing you know, whatever thirty days would be from that
first day if competition is allowed, so you're probably missing
what that would be like maybe five or six games roughly,
(45:33):
So you know, he would have he would have missed
part of the season, not basically the whole thing. Like
the current rule is now, there are cases where I
think we'll see in the future, like you know, a
senior going in their senior year transfers and maybe there's
stuff found out to where it's undue influence or recruiting.
And we actually have a story I did a coach
(45:53):
as confidential with the football coaches today that just came
out this morning on you know, recruiting undo influence and
you know kind of granted and innivity and some of
the answerests were just like, you know, it's really interesting
to read. I mean, it sounds like there's a lot,
you know, going on of that, and I think that
maybe the new rule is adding to that somewhat, but.
Speaker 7 (46:16):
At least in some places. But but but yeah, on.
Speaker 8 (46:20):
Tuy's case, I think, you know, if he doesn't get
eligibility or just as JV, you know, it would kind
of be, you know, for a guy who wants to
play D one basketball, you know, sort of pointless to
play JV, I would say, And you know, so that's
kind of where that stands. But you know, so I
think I think something maybe you learn from it is
that if you want to transfer, you need to do
(46:41):
it before you know, you get into that post junior
year time frame, because then it's sort of in the
hands of you know, sitting out at least thirty days
or you know. So you're going to have more freedom
if you transfer your first two years or after your
first after your second year.
Speaker 1 (46:59):
All right, ship here and all of your thoughts in
high school football, getting ready for another great ware? Go quick, Kyle,
you got real quick.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
Who's your mount rushmore of high school football players that
you've say in your years covering.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
But just to drop that on me, you three minutes over.
Speaker 2 (47:14):
Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I need to know this.
I was curious about this. You've done this for a
long time.
Speaker 8 (47:19):
Oh man, Uh, I would say, you know Sheldon Day
from Warren Central, d One. Gosh, Brandon Peters who played
the quarterback at Avon Peters with Illinois, Yeah, ten years ago.
I mean he was very good high school quarterback.
Speaker 7 (47:37):
Gosh.
Speaker 8 (47:38):
I mean I would have to say, you know, David
Bell would be on my you know, my personal list,
and uh, gosh, now I'm gonna Now you're gonna put
me in a position where I'm gonna miss somebody. Uh man,
I would say I put probably put mark up there
too on that.
Speaker 1 (47:52):
Okay, yeah, well do you pretty quickly? I like that.
Speaker 8 (47:57):
Yeah, I'm I'm uh yeah, I'm probably missing a few here.
Speaker 7 (48:00):
But that's a good question.
Speaker 8 (48:01):
Though.
Speaker 1 (48:02):

everybody will be reminding you. Now, that's right, that's how
