You can also.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
My favorite way to listen to us is on ninety
three point one point is helped me out here Mark
ninety three point three HD two, Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
My favorite white one. Yes, yes, what because it's it's
programmed in now and I haven't looked at it.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Ninety three point one. Isn't it dash too or something?

Speaker 4 (00:37):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
You just you just click the little turn thing one
the dial one click to the right and you can
listen to us there. And I will screw this up
forever because I get caught.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
And I used to be a ninety three point three
and it will not leave my brain. But anyway you
can do that quick w ibc H.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Of course he is, because he's just diverting from the
fact that he owes you something from a bet last night,
and he's not coming up with it.

Speaker 5 (01:02):
I told him I will happily buy like a palette
Swarth if I could actually get the location and where
these are located. I don't think they exist unless you
want some dusty stuff from COVID. Wow, that's where it's
coming up from. Nothing on eBay, nothing on Amazon, Randalls,
and some food market in Atlanta.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Should we chat with James, get it done?

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yes, James Boyd gonna join us.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
I might need him to stop something slickers hotline.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Let's even from Baltimore right now, Good morning, James.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
We have a major, major spat going on here between
Mark and Kevin this morning. There was a friendly wager
on the Cubs Reds game last night. Reds of course won.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
To no the Red Series. Let's give the Reds full
credit here. The Reds have won the series.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Okay, the series. You see the point.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Kevin's a little sensitive to all of that, Marcus sensitive
the fact that he can't find what he promised to deliver,
and that's dominating the program this morning.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Can yes, can you hear us? Yeah? All right, well
let's dig into this.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
I think that Jeff, you want to talk.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
About paying up we had to hunt it down, and
you know.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Mark, please set the record shape did it.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Not in person?

Speaker 2 (02:17):
I shipped so we have it in time for vacation.

Speaker 6 (02:22):
That's weak.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
He would have had in time vacation if you paid
him in a person I did. Couldn't find it in time?

Speaker 3 (02:28):
I would the way Mark's talking, next time I get
this man, Rosie might have and Mark.

Speaker 7 (02:34):
Man don't be following after Jeff doing that.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Let's figure it out.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Trying to resemble our boss in more ways than one here.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
Mark, I would love to be able to pay the man,
But he claims he's found something that was discontinued in
twenty twenty one, and nothing is popping up even remotely
close to here.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah, so James, let's let's get down to it.

Speaker 6 (02:52):
Man.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
You were a joint practices yesterday the Ravens and the
Indianapolis Colts. Last year was an abject disaster for Anthony
Richards's first practice. How much has he improved from last
year to this year in that setting?

Speaker 6 (03:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (03:05):
I went back and looked, actually, and I believe he
was ten of twenty last year against the Bengals in Cincinnati,
and that might be the only good performance they had
on defense all year, because I mean how bad that
Bengals deepens was.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
But they were talking so.

Speaker 7 (03:17):
Crazy to that man and telling him that, you know,
he was scared throw the ball and all he does
is run. But not a lot of trash talk yesterday
and Owings Mills, Maryland actually not Baltimore where they practiced.
But I thought that he had a solid day overall,
and I thought Dale Jones had a soliday as well.
It's a lot of chunk plays down the field, but

(03:38):
Anthony Richardson, I believe, was ten of thirteen passing, had
a short touchdown in red zone drills to Ashton Dolan,
and had a couple bit connections with Ady Mitchell, who
had a big day as well.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
So it seemed like James, honestly, quarterback wise, is kind
of what we have seen so far in Westfield, albeit
against much different competition.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Of course, Yeah, that's what.

Speaker 7 (03:58):
I thought for the most part. You know, Anthony provided
more of the explosive plays, but say his credit, he
also had some of the underneath stuff as well. And
then for Dale Jones, just another efficient day, not a
lot of downfield throws, but kept the chains moving. I
thought that both kind of struggled in the last two
minutes towards the end of practice. That's where the Ravens
defense kind of got them, got a couple of sacks

(04:20):
in there, and the offensive line has to be better
in moments like that, But overall, I think that the
offense could feel pretty good about what they put out
there against the defense that's supposed to be really good
this year.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Again, you can find James Recap up on the Athletics
some great detail yesterday from the Colts and the Ravens
that joint practice again. Tomorrow's preseason opener will be Thursday,
or of course Thursday at seven o'clock. Some chirping from
Ady Mitchell, and that chirping included you boys.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
To a certain extent.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yes, we were standing in the back of the end
zone in.

Speaker 7 (04:53):
One of the one on one drills and Ady Mitchell
burned and Nate Wiggins on the first rev and David
Jones overthrow him and he looks over at us and
he just picks up the ball and he looks at
me and Stephen Holder and he says that bleep is
burnt toast. And I was like, oh okay.

Speaker 6 (05:14):
And then the.

Speaker 7 (05:15):
Next play or a few plays later, he burned another
Ravens cornerback and beat him deep and he caught the
ball this time from Anthony Richardson and looked at us
and was like, I told you, I told you, And
I was like, oh, okay.

Speaker 6 (05:28):
And you know it's one on ones.

Speaker 7 (05:29):
I'm thinking he's just talking or you know, feeling a
little hyped up. But even in the team periods, Adie
Mitchell had a very big day.

Speaker 6 (05:36):
A couple of nice catches.

Speaker 7 (05:37):
The one time that one of the Ravens secondary players
did get a stop on him, which I thought was
an actually good clean breakup, the rest threw a flag
and so Adie Mitchell just trolled the defender and kept
pointing at the flag of pointing at the rest and
kind of I guessing anyway, and that he kind of
saved him from getting cooked again. So he looked like
the best receiver out there for the Colt yesterday, and
then that's kind of been the case the last week

(05:58):
or so, so obviously you just want to see it
transit to games.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
James, tell me a little bit about the offensive and
defensive line play for the Colts.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
That's what I was really interested in seeing yesterday.

Speaker 7 (06:09):
Real quick Jeff, I know you love Adi Mitchell, but
you know, I don't know if Ady Catches is still
going to be on the horizon. I want to, you know,
pump the brakes there and brought on hyping up Adie Mitchell.
I'll give you a few, but maybe not eighty. And
then as far as the offensive line defensive line, I
didn't watch much of the Colts's defense because I you know,
quarterback competition. I'm one person, so I got to watch

(06:30):
the quarterbacks. But I thought the offensive line had some
good moments early on. The actually had some very nice
runs with some misdirection stuff, you know, zone reads when
it comes to Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, and then
Johnny Taylor had some nice runs. But again in that
last two minutes in the hurry of offense, they kind
of got whooped a little bit. So that's something they
have to kind of keep in mind when things get

(06:50):
sped up.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
James Couple just I don't know, maybe post practice questions
for me. I know obviously your attention is more focused
on the Colts quarterbacks. Any update on the knee and
to rookie corner justin Wally because it goes out saying
he's had a really really strong off season and right
now his health is pretty paramount in that corner room.

Speaker 7 (07:10):
Yeah, he had a nice pass breakup yesterday down the
field for on Lamar Jackson, but no other on his
knee just yet. Obviously that is concerning because the injuries
are piling up in that cornerback room. And then Tavarius Ward,
he was not limited, but I think that they're just
treating him as like he's a older veteran and he's
not gonna like just get every single rep anymore in

(07:32):
training camp and in practice and stuff like that. But
you know, he seems to be like your only true
starting cornerback right now, said Kenny Moore, who is fully healthy.
I mean, the rest of them are kind of banged up,
and that third cornerback spot is kind of wide uping
because of it.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Okay, and then any clarity you know, I heard it.
Actually think it goes you that asked Shane about the
playing time for tomorrow night and Anthony Richardson, you know,
we'll be out there for a quarter and a half
and then Daniel Jones will finish off the rest of
the first half. That will flip flop a week from Saturday.
Are we expecting the other Colts offensive starters to be
with Richardson?

Speaker 7 (08:07):
Yeah, he did really say, and to be honest, that's
my fault for not pressing him more on it. But
we'll just have to kind of wait and see who's
out there. But I would assume that you can't really
put Anthony out there without some sort of starting caliber
talent and expect to evaluate him properly. I would say
the same thing for Daniel Jones as well, So I
would expect those guys around him to at least be

(08:29):
out there for a few series to help them evaluate
if Anthony's progressing or not, because, let's be honest, he's
not going to be out there with the second unit
if he is just starting quarterback.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
So what's on the agenda for the Colts over the
next thirty six hours or so?

Speaker 2 (08:42):
How's this going to work?

Speaker 7 (08:45):
Well, they probably rest and watch the film and break
things down today and then prepare for tomorrow's game.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Right example, looking forward to it. Thanks so much. What
are you doing with your day off today in Baltimore?

Speaker 7 (08:59):
Well, not really, you know, up early as always the
body clock. As you all know, we'll be up at
six forty five, So always up these days. And then
you got to get back home and then write a
preseason opener preview about who I'm going to be watching,
so look out for that. You know, who could gain
some things, who could lose some things, and based off

(09:20):
their performance tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
All right, buddy, we'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Save travels.

Speaker 5 (09:24):
James, all right, pay up, Mark, I can if I
if I'm not able to ay man Jane to spend
the money, We'll give them my debit card.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
James will up violence to everybody today.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Man, I couldn't agree with James. I can't believe these
people in the YouTube. Joe Kevin's being too harsh on Mark.
Don't agree to the bet, well, then don't agree with
the gay. I mean it's that simple.

Speaker 5 (09:45):
No, it's not that simple. When it says discontinued in
twenty twenty one.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Don't say yes if you can't.

Speaker 5 (09:50):
Right there, I said yes because you said they're readily available,
and I said where and you said figure it out?
And I said what.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
I feel really bad for Colts fans with yesterday's announced
pivot right there, So yesterday's announcement, Jeff has Anthony Richardson
starting tomorrow night, correct, playing about a quarter and a half. Yep,
that means next week against Jones Screen Bay. It will
be Daniel Jones in the home preseason game and Anthony
Richardson will play It sounds like a half of a

(10:19):
quarter in front of the home fans. I was thinking
about this last night and one of the double check
its I looked this up because correct me, how I'm wrong?
But a preseason ticket is still full price?

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Right they gave They don't cut you any slack.

Speaker 3 (10:33):
Anthony Richardson Tomorrow night will be his seventh preseason game
in his life. So far, in the three road games,
he's thrown forty three passes, like he plays a ton
on the road in the preseason. In the home games,
he's thrown four. He's thrown four passes in the three
home preseason games in his entire career. And I get

(10:56):
this is a little bit just like the oddity in
preseason scheduling. If it would have been the reverse and
the Colts had a home preseason game to lead off
this year, slate, I assume that he would be obviously
starting and playing a quarter and a half. But like
I already feel for fans that have to play pay
full price for the preseason slate, you would at least
like to see Anthony Richardson, I think out there for
a good amount, and for the umpteenth year in a

(11:18):
row here you're gonna get Anthony Richardson, you know, playing
a series or two. And it's just weird how he's
played in all these road preseason games and yet barely
plays at home.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Coming up in a minute, I'm going to tell you
exactly what I think about preseason and the way the
NFL handles the preseason. I felt this way for.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
A long time, and it's probably like an annual rant,
but I'm going to give it again, and.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
We'll do it next. As we continue at ninety three
five and one O seven to five, the fan.

Speaker 3 (11:41):
Aren't we breaking early?

Speaker 2 (11:43):
We are again? Aren't we looking up there and thinking
it's the wrong hour?

Speaker 1 (11:47):
I'm on fire today, Mark, it's I'm in mid season
form today.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Your clock?

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Is that a fair?

Speaker 6 (11:52):
I know?

Speaker 3 (11:52):
I did see the Colts had several fall starts at
the starting problem.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
This is what happens when I stay up to watch
games on the West Coast. I'm used list The next
day it was a nice tease.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
You want me to pay off? Well, yeah, you might
as well.

Speaker 5 (12:04):
We got ten more minutes.

Speaker 2 (12:07):
I don't know, you, guys. I'm having fun today. That's
really all that matters.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
I wouldn't mind pivoting into a little Rick Carlo.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
We will get to that. But here's the thing about
preseason games. You go, you know, an NFL game, especially
for kids, and people don't get a chance to go
very often.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
That's a special deal, right, It's you get a chance
you go see some really good football. You want to
see a quarterback that makes great plays, you want to
see all these things. It's like going to the best
restaurant in town and wanting that farm to table freshness
that the cook has been that the that the chef
has been cooking up for you for hours and hours

(12:42):
just waiting for you to come dine at their amazing restaurant.
And you get there and everything you're eating comes straight
out of a can. That's exactly what the preseason is like.
You're paying gourmet prices for fast food quality. And I
don't understand how the NFL continues to get away with
charging full price for preseason games year after year after

(13:03):
year after year. I don't get it. You buy when
you buy your season ticket package, mark, you have to
buy all the games, yep. And a lot of people
that are that, you know, I know a lot of
people who just give their tickets a way to other people.
And I suppose it's still a great experience for a
young kid to go and see some players and see
quote NFL football, but it's not really truly for four

(13:25):
quarters NFL football is.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
It just drives me nuts. Now I am able to
do that.

Speaker 3 (13:31):
I would agree on that.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
I mean, you're gonna go see especially in the last
preseason game generally most of the game, you're gonna see
guys that were obviously good players in college that that
are on the precipice of making the NFL. But they're
not really NFL players, are they.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:47):
I again, I think it's only a matter of time
before they probably just go, you know, full joint practices
maybe and you know, open up those two fans as
all Green Bay at like forty thousand people out their
joint practice. I got an idea for the maybe they'll
go there.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
The NFL, who's you know, trying to keep the leak
going year to year? Right? What if they had.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Full joint practices with a couple of teams a few
times and charge people like I don't know, ten bucks
to get in and gave all that money to charity.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Yeah, I mean the Bolts, I believe for them pretty
good at time practices they send their money. I want
to say to the flag football initiative that obviously is
taken off here in recent years. So yeah, that makes
a lot of sense. Mark, let's play this Rick Carlisle audio.
I thought, first off, Kaitlin Cooper. I think most diehard
Pacers fans will know who she is. She does an
incredible job. And you want to talk about a graduate

(14:37):
course in the game of basketball, particularly the Pacers, she
is teaching that and she is Professor of the year. Honestly,
there are many times that I listen, read, watch her
work and I'm like, that is so far above my head.
So I thought it was really cool that Rick Carlisle
went on to her podcast. They spoke for about an
hour on a variety of topics, and I think a

(14:57):
topic that has been a bit hot button has been
Bendick Matheren and what will this look like for him
coming up this season? And in typical Carlisle fashion, he
laid it out. I thought pretty detailed for Benedict matherin
here without Tyres Haliburton coming up this season. So again,
this is h Carlisle on Caitlin Cooper's podcast yesterday, in

(15:18):
regards to the role for Benedict Matheren.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I'll be real honest.

Speaker 8 (15:22):
You know, this is a part of Ben Matherins game
that we keep talking to him about.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
And you know, he's a He's.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
A guy that is just a natural scorer.

Speaker 8 (15:34):
I mean, you put him in a you put him
in a rat game with a bunch of switching and
a bunch of physical stuff, and the guy's gonna go
find eighteen points and he's gonna shoot seven free tropes
at least. But the pure elements of the passing and
the quick decisions and stuff like that are things that

(15:55):
he is. He's gradually getting and he's gonna get there.
And I think, you know this year right now, and
I'll break I'll break the news right here.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
You know, I'm projecting him as our starter in two
this year. Pretty bold, right there? KB.

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Well, I mean, I guess we're sitting here in the
middle of August.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Who else you're gonna start? Ben Sheppard over him. I
mean to me like Bendic mather needs to be the
starting too. I think, you know, probably the early part
of that answer from Carlisle is one where this continues
to be the further conversation with Matherin. It's always he
needs to fit into us like that you know he
started off. And for those that again watch the whole interview.

(16:43):
He does mention Ben Sheppard for example, and him doing
some little things that the coaching staff wants to see
Matherin do. He brings up Aaron Eismith at Vanderbilt for example,
where he played for Jerry Stackhouse in a much different
system than what he was asked to do, certainly in
Austin and even here in Indiana. So it's just the

(17:04):
confusing nature to Benedic mather in a PACER's uniform.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
He's still pretty young, though, what is he I think
he can be what Rick describes. I think his potential
is terrific and I think that's what Carlisle sees.

Speaker 3 (17:18):
So if he doesn't do enough of little things, well.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Then he probably you know Rick, he's if he doesn't
do enough of those that.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Is I mean, Benick Matherin is elsewhere twenty points scores
off the bench, and the NBA Finals aren't coveted.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
I don't know that he's necessarily elsewhere, but there's a
decision for them to make somewhere down theough.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
It's a huge decision, and that decision is probably by February.
I mean, you don't want Matherin to walk for nothing.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
How much is he going to get elsewhere to walk
for nothing if he's not doing all the little things.
How much is another team going to give him?

Speaker 3 (17:47):
Well, I wouther think a former top ten pick of
the age of twenty three that has proven to be
the score he can be in this league is going.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
To track something.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
So I just think it's a monumental year.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Well four.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
Good news is for Rick and his staff is they
know him beter than anybody else, and they'll know by
February whether he's tracking to what Rick said, he'll get there,
and if he's not tracking, then then you're right. Then
they have a huge decision to make. But I think
right now Rick is just operating under the the idea

(18:17):
that Mathern is going to be the guy that he
can lean on moving forward.

Speaker 3 (18:21):
I thought there are a couple other items that was
that were interesting from Rick yesterday, So looking forward to
get into that as the show moves along.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
Yeah, there's the one thing about I'll say about the
Pacers man, whether it was the run to the NBA
Finals and everything, since, they have given us something to
talk about almost consistently year round, and this is this
is a team that's going to be obviously trying to
pick and choose how they're going to put things back
together with the Tygree's Helibert and be it out and
the loss as you mentioned a moment ago of Miles Turner.

(18:50):
Did you make much last week of the fact that
Giannis is still not quite committing to a future with
the Bucks or is that more media drama do you think, Oh, I.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
Think that's just the state of the Bucks. Yeah, I
get that. Yeah, I mean it's gonna sound like a
knock on Miles Turner, But I don't think an acquisition
of Miles Turner would all of a sudden make me
if I'm Yannest say oh, I'm gonna sign here forever
and here's my life and here's blood on the contract, Like, no,
I don't do that at all. So yeah, it's not
the most shocking thing in the world. I look at

(19:23):
the Bucks operation, if I'm honest right now, and think, Okay,
what exactly are we doing here? Where exactly is this
next sort of window in this next run? So yeah,
I would Yeah, I don't blame you, honest at all.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
So do you think that this kind of opens up
the window in that division for the Cleveland Cavaliers over
the next year or two, you.

Speaker 3 (19:39):
Know, probably for this year? Yeah, I would say Cleveland, Yeah,
they probably. I mean how I mean, look what they
did last year in the regular season. They ran away
from the Central as is. So yes, given Halliburton's situation, obviously,
whatever the Bucks are going to be, yes, I would
say Cleveland is the overwhelming favorite in the Central.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Happy Wednesday. Colts had joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens yesterday.
Welcome into ninety three five one oh seven five the fan.
That song, that sound can only mean one thing, Kevin Bowen,
can only mean one thing. Steven Holder joining us here
on the Payless Liquers Hotline this morning. He was representing

(20:20):
ESPN yesterday at the joint practices with the Colts and
the Ravens.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
Good morning, mister Holder. How's the East coastering.

Speaker 6 (20:25):
You, Oh, pretty good so far, you know, a little overcast,
but not rainy, and so yeah, we're doing okay, all right?

Speaker 2 (20:36):
All in all, What kind of day did the Colts
have yesterday with the Baltimore Ravens.

Speaker 6 (20:42):
I thought it was a day of progress, frankly, because
I think so much of training camp is just trying
to figure out what the what in the world you're
watching and what it means. Right, It's not just you know,
who's making plays or what have you. It's also trying
to put it in context. You know, they're playing against
each other, so you get into the jersey out there.

(21:03):
I do think it means a lot whether you make
plays or don't against that team. And they consistently made plays,
certainly on offense, which is the better vantage point that
I had. I feel better about the quarterbacks after yesterday.
I'm not a big person when it comes to hyper Bowl,

(21:25):
but I was very pleasantly surprised. And they consistently made
plays against the Ravens defense, and that was a very
impressive secondary. So I think it means a lot frankly.

Speaker 3 (21:36):
Yeah, Steven, it definitely sounded like read your piece. It
sounded like a really good quarterback day even for both guys.
You know, at the times we've probably fall under the
Anthony Richardson highlights, but it sounded like Daniel Jones had
a really efficient day as well. Let's stick on the
quarterbacks for just a second. We know that Shane Second
said after practice quarter and a half for Richardson to
borrow and night than Daniel Jones to get the quarter

(21:56):
and a half coming up a week from Saturday. If
you had to guess, what does that final week of
the preseason look like? I mean, based off what Shane
said yesterday, this competition will continue through Green Bay joint
practice next Thursday, the preseason game next Saturday, but that
final week, no joint practice, the last preseason game in Cincinnati.
Would you expect another end game split or do you

(22:18):
think he wants to commit to one before that final
game and give them I don't know a half of football.

Speaker 6 (22:24):
I have thought about this and it could go either
way clearly, but I think the smarter route in my opinion,
And Shane he's going to ask me, but if he did,
I would say, let's make a decision after that second game.
I mean, you're talking about three weeks of practice, two
joint practices, two games. That's a lot of information, right

(22:46):
I mean, that is what's going to change. I would
say in that last preseason game where your opponent probably
isn't going to play anyone, you're not going to learn
that much. In my opinion, I think they know a
lot right now. Frankly, we've seen a lot. We have
we have two weeks of practice, we have a joint practice.
You've seen quite a bit.

Speaker 7 (23:05):
Now.

Speaker 6 (23:05):
The separation really isn't there between them. They've both I
think acquitted themselves well, so there's nothing wrong with letting
it play out a little more. But I also think
you get to a point where you probably need to
move forward and you need to get the reps, at
least more reps with the starting offense right now. Splitting
them is great because you're trying to you're trying to assess,

(23:28):
but at some point you also want the continuity with
that starting quarterback, and the more that you get going
into Week one, the better.

Speaker 3 (23:35):
Stephen Holder from ESPN he was in Owens mel Z
yesterday watching that joint practice and heard ad Mitchell's words
and then watched Adie Mitchell seemingly back it up as well.
You know, we got into a lot of Adie Mitchell
talk yesterday on the show Steven. My biggest question is
where does he get playing time? Like the talent is obvious.

(23:57):
I mean, there's no denying that talent from my but
I guess, again, how do you kind of view wide
receiver plus I guess Tyler Warren's presence too in terms
of a It's a good problem to have on paper,
but what do you kind of see as consistent playing
time for Adi Mitchell?

Speaker 6 (24:16):
I think it's a great question. There is only one football,
and there are other guys who are going to be
airmarked to get some of those balls, as they should.
I mean, Michael Pittman is going to get his because
he is reliable and he is a volume receiver. Anthony
Richardson in particular, it seems very comfortable throwing him the ball.
So he's going to get his Alec Pearce, they're going

(24:39):
to dial stuff up for him because of course, and
then Josh Downs, Mitchter reliable, Tyler Warren. Yeah, he might
get a few balls. I would say it is a
good problem to have, but it is a real thing.
I don't know how it's going to go. I think
with Ady Mitchell, he is the kind of guy there's
a conundrum there. And Jim Bob kou Or said this, Uh,

(25:01):
there's a little bit of a conundrum because he's the
claimed guy who he gets better with more opportunity.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
Right.

Speaker 6 (25:10):
Well, he got the ball early in practice yesterday and
made a few plays early on, and then he starts
to feel himself and now you just can't hold him
back because now he's talking and he's he's you know,
he's vibing out there and he's ready to roll. That's
who he is, and he is a very emotional player.
So get you get more out of him by giving
him more opportunities. But I don't know where the opportunities

(25:31):
will come from. It is a real conundrum and I
don't have the answer. I don't think the Colts have
the answer, but I would say this they they see
there a guy who has I don't think this is
hyper bowl. They have a guy there who has the
ability in the long term if he progresses his ability
to be their number one wide receiver.

Speaker 1 (25:51):
I really believe that Stephen Holder joining us on the
Paydleftlickers hot line. He was at that joint practice with
the Ravens and the Colts yesterday. Obviously, quarterback is the
What are some of the other position battles?

Speaker 2 (26:01):
How many position battles are there even right now? Linebacker
maybe not a ton?

Speaker 6 (26:07):
Yeah, linebackers one, obviously, the quarterback we talked about that
and nauseum, but not a ton. And I guess that
speaks to the composition of this team. It's a veteran team,
or there are at least a lot of veterans. I
would say maybe there would be a battle for the
third corner if anybody was actually healthy, but they're not,

(26:28):
so I don't know where that stands. And then Justin
Waally getting hurt yesterday, so we still don't have an
update there. But there's not a ton of spots up
for grabs. I mean, this team, to me is the
composition of this team is already pretty clear. We know
who's playing where and what they're capable of this team. Ultimately,

(26:50):
their fate will be decided on whether the quarterback, whoever
it is, whether that quarterback elevates the team. And that's
just I think where they are, they're a good team
outside of quarterback, they're a good team. And then the
quarterback will decide the rest of it.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
In my opinion, can Steven Holder from me ESPN with
this year on the Payless Slickers hot line, Stephen any
clarity on how much the other offensive starters will play
Tomorrow night? Like, I don't need to see Jonathan Taylor
play football, but I mean outside of him, you could
probably make the case for the other ones. I mean,
I think it's important Francy Erson to be behind the
starting O line for at least a bit. Any idea

(27:28):
on how much the other ten will play.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
A little bit of an idea, I don't think it'll be.
I don't think the key guys will play. Certainly Jonathan Taylor,
I would be stunned if you ever saw him at
all this preseason. You can on defense, for example, you
won't see the Forest Buckner, etc. I don't believe Michael
Pittman's gonna play. You may not get the entire offensive

(27:54):
line either. And here's why, because, at least not for
an extended period of time, the Ravens are not expected
to play their starters. It sounds like John harvaugh already
kind of told shame Stike and how he's going to
go about it. As coaches tend to do. They discuss
what they're going to do in terms of playing their
starters or not. So they've had that discussion and shame

(28:15):
Stacken doesn't expect them to play a lot of their
key players, so they feel a little more comfortable maybe
not having a Quinton Nelson out there the whole time
with Anthony Richardson for example. Right, So it may be
a little bit of mixing and matching offensively for the Colts,
but they're okay with that because of who the Ravens
are playing.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
Yeah, and that's the great part about the joint practices
as you get two teams together and both teams can
specifically work on exactly what they want to do, exactly
the situations they're looking at all those kinds of things,
and then the game comes and whatever happens happens. But
they have the opportunity to put their key guys in
specific situations.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
That's what makes them so great, right, Yeah, it is.

Speaker 6 (28:58):
You can script it exactly how you want, like you said,
and to some degree, you're really just out there scrimmaging.
It's a legitimate scrimmage. You know, you you certainly scripted
in terms of like, okay, this portion of practice will
be read zone, this will be two minutes, et cetera.
But everything else within that is is independent of each other.
You know, the Colts call their stuff, the Ravens call

(29:20):
their stuff. And that's what's great about it. When you
are practicing against your own team, if you're if you're
a Daniel Jones or Anthony Richardson, you know exactly how
those corners are going to play particular routes. You know
exactly their technique, you know the blitzays. You're very familiar
with all those things. You see them every day. And

(29:41):
so here what you have is something you aren't able
to plan for because this is not a game scenario.
They're just out there playing. So it definitely forces you
to adapt a little bit more and have to kind
of show up and be brought eyed bushy tails. So
I thought, under those circumstances, for them to perform the

(30:01):
way they did, I think it means a lot and
definitely carries weight.

Speaker 1 (30:05):
All right, to have fun at the game tomorrow night,
be safe coming back, and I guess when you get back,
it'll be time for school and your kids right now, right,
that's how it goes.

Speaker 6 (30:14):
I think today the first day, that's I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
So, yeah, here we go, Here we go, all right, buddy,
Mike be safe, right, Stephen Holder joining us on the
payless Lickers hotline right there. So, having said all that,
like one of the most interesting things for you for
the Colts tomorrow night, just Anthony Richardson and how he performs.

Speaker 3 (30:32):
Yeah, I mean that's the obvious one, you know, Ady
Mitchell in a game setting, you know, that's we have
seen him have flash before in practices, so just I
assume he would get a good amount of run. So
looking forward him in a game setting, I did see
It might be a little thing to some people, but
I did see Spencer Schrader it sounded like missed from

(30:53):
fifty yards yesterday to end practice. I think it was
Jones got the starting offense into field goal range. I
think the Richardson two men drive stalled out. If I
read that correctly, Jones got them into field goal range.
Trader missed wide left. Trader has had a nice percentage
here in camp in this joint practice, but he has
missed several times from fifty.

Speaker 1 (31:12):
Plus, which is what the cults have been looking for exactly.

Speaker 3 (31:15):
So that would be an item that I'll be watching
for you know, you brought up linebacker as a position battle.
It's definitely one, you know next as iron. Again, we
didn't see Sire Franklin yesterday, so you know that is
not an answer we're going to get tomorrow, Jeff. But
I mean we're a month away from the regular season
opener tomorrow, September seventh. Ziah Franklin has yet to take
an eleven on eleven rep in this year, so is

(31:39):
that of concern? All again, He's back to practice, but
we didn't see him out there yesterday, so that's just
something to keep an eye.

Speaker 6 (31:47):
Honest.

Speaker 2 (31:48):
I'm gonna ask the total nerdy question that there are
some people out there wondering and other people probably haven't
thought about that much.

Speaker 5 (31:53):
We be interrupt for a second.

Speaker 2 (31:54):
Oh boy, we have we found something. Oh boy, I
was about to I was question.

Speaker 5 (32:01):
I've texted your wife.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
Oh boy.

Speaker 5 (32:03):
She claims you are completely wrong on this whole situation
and that you're drinking kool Aid bursts Barry Blue. She said,
these are what my mom gets him. He's confused on
the brand.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
No, no, no, this is official mono. She's texting me.

Speaker 5 (32:18):
I'm texting with her right now cool lecture of the bottle.
She said, kool Aid bursts, Barry Blue kids drink. They're
a six count of Kroger cool.

Speaker 3 (32:27):
Show are these?

Speaker 5 (32:29):
She said, He's confused about the brand. I said, I'm
gonna kill him.

Speaker 3 (32:32):
Well, I mean that seems a little harsh.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Man oh man, Oh, he's got to show you the screen.

Speaker 3 (32:37):
Now, let me see this.

Speaker 2 (32:38):
Can you read us the conversation.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
Kool Aid burst? Lol, he's confused about the brand. That's
why my mom gets for the kids. And Mark goes,
oh my god, I'm.

Speaker 5 (32:46):
Gonna kill And Maddy laughed at that. Boy, I don't
know if I like that. So I've gone above your
head and you're the idiots here.

Speaker 3 (32:54):
Nothing like Maddie dropping Rosie off on her first day
of school and here's Mark Dyton bothering her.

Speaker 5 (32:58):
I told her, I said, I hate to bother you
over something so stupid, but your husband's given me hell here,
So you've got kool Aid bursts. You having me try
to go to Atlanta or Texas and I could just
buy one.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
I want to seeing him at all these groceries.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
I think he knows this, and he wanted to see
if you could find some Monday.

Speaker 5 (33:17):
I mean, I will happily go to Smyrna, Georgia when
I go to Florida in October bring some back. No,
they aren't even available in Maryland. It says Georgia and Texas.
But apparently and And distributes.

Speaker 3 (33:31):
Freeze backs food markets, food town. I'm seeing it everywhere,
nom day Mon, farmers Market, Randalls.

Speaker 2 (33:39):
You need to look up the distributor everywhere.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
Tom Thumb, Come on, Mark, I'm going off of Now.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
Are you saying your wife is incorrect?

Speaker 4 (33:46):
Now?

Speaker 2 (33:47):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (33:47):
I will challenge her on the air.

Speaker 5 (33:49):
Yes, she says, you're confused.

Speaker 3 (33:52):
Let's be honest.

Speaker 5 (33:55):
I think we've settled it. Cool a kool Aid bursts
are coming your way.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
Kool Aid burst, such a knockoff apparently what it is.
By the way, cotton candy beer last night wasn't as
bad as I thought it'd be.

Speaker 2 (34:07):
What did you think it was gonna be?

Speaker 4 (34:08):
Like?

Speaker 2 (34:09):
Well, I thought it was gonna be horrific, too sweet?

Speaker 3 (34:11):
Yeah, I was hesitant, but I actually thought it was.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
How would you describe the taste?

Speaker 3 (34:15):
And I mean it is candy e to say the least,
But it got the job done. The fair was a
very packed house last night. The two dollars Tuesdays is
no joke.

Speaker 2 (34:29):
What were the kids into?

Speaker 3 (34:32):
Uh? Well, they have corn Dog Hot Dog, the dinosaur ride.
They did a Chew Chew train ride. Rosie was mesmerized
by the round up? Have you been on the round up?

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Is that the one that spins around?

Speaker 3 (34:45):
The one you stand up and you spin around?

Speaker 2 (34:48):
Yeah? No, that looks like that looks like hell to me?

Speaker 3 (34:52):
It looks like the definition of hell. Have you been
on that? Mark?

Speaker 5 (34:56):
No, we did go yesterday though, because two dollars Tuesdays
we did Crazy.

Speaker 3 (34:59):
No One was the fair more than Mark.

Speaker 5 (35:01):
Well, we did because the girls hadn't gone yet and
it's two dollars Tuesdays and like, hey, that's probably our
last time going. Although boom Bill Murray's band is playing Friday.
I kind of want to see that.

Speaker 2 (35:09):
We'll see.

Speaker 5 (35:10):
But uh no, we did Crazy Medium.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (35:13):
Yeah, his band is blatantly uh huh free stage on Friday,
Bill Murray and the Blood Brothers or something. No, we
uh we went to that. So we did the Crazy
Mouse roller coaster. The girls did another roller coaster they
did like kind of like not a Haunted House, but
like one of those like almost like jungle gym things
we can climb up and going down slides and stuff
and everything.

Speaker 3 (35:32):
Yeah, I saw that.

Speaker 5 (35:33):
So we did that, got some Keli milkshakes, did the
did all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (35:38):
The dairy bar never disappoints. Extreme sculpting was something the
Bow and family is really interested in. Have you seen
this guy?

Speaker 2 (35:44):
Yes, most impressive chainsaws.

Speaker 3 (35:48):
I guess to sculpt, but I mean would I guess?

Speaker 2 (35:51):
Yeah, like real like the medium.

Speaker 3 (35:53):
Yeah, and he does that I think every two hours.
We were mesmerized by that.

Speaker 5 (35:58):
Yeah, it was a fun time.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
Talented people in this week there is really crazy.

Speaker 5 (36:01):
I want Mondo's, Well you're not getting them, apparently about
to some scure kool aid blasts.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
Agreed can happening today?

Speaker 7 (36:14):
Mark?

Speaker 3 (36:14):
Do you know what the I think? Do you know
what happens if people at the fair agree to bets
and it goes wrong, Well, they have to eat an
extra the red slider? Would you have to go on
the round up it doesn't go well? Well, apparently, okay,
I there are Mondos out there in the world and
it's your job to find that. I agree. How the
bet was agreed?

Speaker 5 (36:32):
I agreed to this because you said your mother in
law got them recently and you said. I was like, wow,
they've been discontinued in twenty twenty one, and he said, no,
they're back.

Speaker 1 (36:39):
Okay, story, did you know that that it wasn't a
mondo that you've been consuming.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
It looked exactly a mondo.

Speaker 2 (36:47):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (36:48):
So, because just because your brain doesn't work doesn't mean
that I'm on the hook for something that's available in Texas.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
And George, do we need to go back and listen
to the audio of the bet on the mondos? I
had nothing to do with what I drank at my
mother in law's house is right on the late mark
the bet was made on. The winner was for a
mondo six Let me go to Let me go to
the junkyard and dig one up from twenty twenty when
they were last made.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
Well, apparently that weren't last made. Then you can get
them in.

Speaker 5 (37:15):
See has discontinued in twenty twenty one, Jeff, I will
send you.

Speaker 2 (37:19):
Then why do they have these other places? So to speak?

Speaker 5 (37:23):
Just I don't know if you know this, but the
Internet lies. Sometimes just because there's a picture of something
on the Internet doesn't mean it's actually there.

Speaker 1 (37:31):
Somehow, some way we've made it to the nine o'clock
hour without any blows being delivered by either Mark Dydon
or Kevin Bowen. Then we'll get back to that a
little bit later on, because I'm sure we'll not go away.
But in the meantime, we've been talking a little basketball.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
This morning.

Speaker 1 (37:43):
We heard some comments from the head coach of the
Indiana Pacers where Carlisle not too long ago, And now
we got the Indiana Hoosiers who are playing a couple
of games out of the well, they're in Puerto Rico,
not quite out of the country, but they're going to
be down there, and they're going to be doing there
at least, you know, preseason exploits in Puerto Rico. And

(38:04):
joining us now from that site is Jeff Rabjohn's who
who is always kind to us here on the Paylst
lookers holloining, good morning, Jeff, how you doing?

Speaker 4 (38:12):
Good morning?

Speaker 6 (38:13):
Fantastic you guys hear me? Okay, yeah, So.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
Are you reveling in the weather down there? Is it
perfect summertime weather or is it a little too hot
and humid? What's going on?

Speaker 4 (38:21):
It's phenomenal. But by the way, was that a little
batty yankee for me?

Speaker 2 (38:26):
For you? You caught that.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
That was your walkout music when you walk off the
plane yesterday.

Speaker 6 (38:33):
Jeff, Yeah, Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 4 (38:36):
That's it. I walked off the plane Daddy Yankee crank
and that did the Connor McGregor straight.

Speaker 1 (38:42):
This has got to be fascinating for you, Like, who
knows what you're going to see in the next three games.
Everybody's optimistic, they feel good, but like, this is a
completely different, overhauled coaching staff roster, everything from top to bottom,
wasn't it It is?

Speaker 4 (38:58):
It's a holy roster. And the biggest thing is it's
not just a new roster as in their new players,
new faces. It's new concepts, new ideas, new points and emphasis. Uh,
it's about it's about players who can shoot the ball.
Big emphasis was three point shooting, which is going to
continue with high use recruiting moving forward. It was an
emphasis on players, you know, who have skills. Can they move?

Speaker 6 (39:19):
Can they pass?

Speaker 4 (39:21):
Can they create shots for others? I mean that's one
of the things that really stood up about Forward read daily.
You know, you really dive into some of the nerdy
analytics and his ability to create passes off one, two,
three durable moves is really high and it's a team
that that's you know, it's all about skill. They they
focused on skill. And I'm not saying everybody is incredibly skilled,
but the focus was on skill more than Okay, we're

(39:43):
gonna get too big, bruising centers and we're gonna pound
the ball inside and you know all that. Now it's
a different concept. You know, it's gonna take a while
to implement. And I think one of the things that's
always important to keep keep in mind about these kinds
of things is, you know, these are trip a lot
of it's about team bonding. They've only had ten practices.

(40:05):
Not a whole lot has been installed for anybody about
after ten practices. So it's like, there's really not like
I never evaluate score scoring totals. Old this kid hit
five threes, Well, he may never hit five threes again.
He may have had one great moment cool, but it
may be a one time deal. But what you do
watch is like, Okay, what are they trying to do?

(40:26):
You know, who's getting the shots? What kind of just
general offensive schemes are they trying to run. Does it
look like there's guys who understand how to move and
pass those kind of things, so there is a lot
to learn, but it's always important to be real, real
careful about projecting from exhibition games, as you know, if

(40:47):
you want the specific ieu related object lesson. They went
down to Tennessee and won last year, then didn't even
make Dancia Tournament.

Speaker 3 (40:56):
Jeff rad John's peaks where you find his work, and
obviously he's got your coverage down there in San Juan.
Three games for Darren Devrees and company over the next
handful of days. Uh, Jeff, you guys were able to
watch practice last week and listening to Darren Devrees afterwards,
it sounded like he really has little worry about the
offensive end of the floor, which when you consider the

(41:17):
backgrounds of the guys that he found in the portal,
I think got checks defensive end, though a little bit
more of a concern. Is that kind of a fair
assessment of where things are at.

Speaker 4 (41:28):
Well, I don't know if I would just go so far.
I don't know if I would say he has little
concern about the offense. I just think they're further ahead
offensively than they are defensively, and I think that's that's
because you've got guys who were more offensive oriented, you know,
Lamar will Kers. You know he's geared to make shots.
Tecker de Rees geared to make shots. You know, they
had different guys, you know, Josiah Miles and sophomore guard.

(41:49):
They got out of North Florida. You know it's geared
to make shots. Obviously, North Florida led the country at
the three point rate last year. So that tells you
sort of the system design. Miles and just need a
little further ahead offensively than they are defensively right now.
And that's why I also think you're going to see
a lot of emphasis when when the regular practices start.

(42:11):
I mean really you've seen it already, but even more so,
and when formal practice starts, you're going to see a
lot of emphasis on the defense. And we saw that
watching practice, really specific stuff like even when you're doing
two on two or three on three heroes, where are
you in certain gaps? Are you positioned correctly? And there
were times to restop it and said, no, man, you

(42:31):
can't be a step below the free throw line. You
got to be a step above the free throw line.
Now do it again, and do it right. Boom, blow
the whistle. Run them through it three or four times.
So there's a lot of emphasis on technique, specific understanding
and gaps and spacing and then blocking out. You know,
he's you know, right now, he's got them to where
you can't go for an AUM, can't go for a
defensive rebound, and so you turn and block somebody out.

(42:53):
Block out first, then go get the ball. And as
we all saw with you know, some recent IU teams,
even with two centers on the floor, they gave up
some offensive rebounds that you look at and go they
just shouldn't be giving those up. Rewanted to tape what happened. Well,
three guys stood around and watched the ball like a
rainbow going up in the air, didn't do anything. So
I think you're gonna see points of emphasis about that

(43:14):
continue as they as they start to get into practice.

Speaker 6 (43:17):
And I think the one thing.

Speaker 4 (43:18):
About the Breeze that I've learned, you know, watching the
practice so often there's some other people, is that you
know he's big on there's certain fundamentals you drill all
year long. You make sure that certain things are put
in guy's minds. This is important. We're going to make
sure you drill it regularly. So I think you're going
to see those things be points of emphasis, not just
this year, but over the course of Darren Debrees' career

(43:38):
and during his time in Bloomington.

Speaker 1 (43:41):
I still can't get over like, and when's the last
time we saw like the complete total overhaul.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
We got what.

Speaker 1 (43:48):
Ten I think ten transfers, a freshman and two walk
ons retained from last year, and a brand new coaching staff.
I know I talked about it a minute ago, Jet,
but I don't know that I've ever seen anything quite
like this at a program like Indiana before.

Speaker 2 (44:03):
Can you think of anything like this?

Speaker 4 (44:06):
Well, you know it is unusual from a historical standpoint,
no doubt. But Louisville basically went to the same thing
last year, you know. There there, you know, they basically
a whole brand new team. Now, it was a little
different as far as what you could put together. There
were still COVID years that some guy had, you had
six year guys and and things like that, and and

(44:29):
the nil numbers were completely different. But it is something
that has happened a few times here and there. Scut
sorry about that here noways started let me see that law,
but only it's totally totally unusual. It is different though
there's no question. It is different, and it is all
of those things where in the portal era you can't
do it. It's not like when Cream came in after

(44:51):
Calvin Danson and you had to start with, you know,
mainly just freshmen who you hopefully become sophomore so you
hope would become good juniors.

Speaker 3 (45:00):
Jeff, I'll shift gears here as we close things out.
We appreciate the time because I know it's going to
be a busy day for you with the first game
down there in Puerto Rico coming up tonight. No viewing,
by the way, so Jeff, rab Johns and those boots
on the ground will be you're gonna have to go
to to get some insight into what happens. But Fernando
Mendoza and the Indiana Hoosiers, they have started their fall

(45:20):
practice and preseason ranked nineteen in the Coaches poll, obviously
a big one in September with Illinois coming to town.
If I got sick with Mendoza for a second, just
in your best educated guests, how would you compare his
skill set to what we saw with the departing Curtis Rourke.

Speaker 4 (45:40):
He's actually better And then that's gonna sound crazy but
he's just he's a little bit bigger, there's a little
more arm strength, he's just got a little more zip
on certain throws. So he's better. He's got a much
better chance of just making some really really impact plays.
A big thinking about Curtis work is he threw the

(46:02):
ball to the right spot a very high percentage of
the nile, and that is a skill for a quarterback
to have. I think the only real question with Mendoza
is is he going to be comfortable and totally trust
his protection? And I bring that up because last year
a cow you know, he was wanting for his life
about half the time, pressure came up the middle from

(46:23):
both sides and he really had to scramble. Now, he
made some phenomenal plays on the move. But I think
with this offensive line Hartis Smith back, with Pat Cougan
there in the middle now placing the great Mikadic at center,
I think he's going to have a chance to get protection.
But Mendoz is actually better. And I know some people
maybe looking at Curtis works numbers and going what the
world is there? Have you talking about? Telling you she

(46:45):
can throwing springs him throw in the fall, you know,
Fernando Mendoza, you know, just he just has more physical tools.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
Jeff, always good to hear your thoughts.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
Have fun watching this new and completely overhauled into and
a team you can't wait to hear what you see.

Speaker 4 (47:02):
Appreciate him actually looking forward to seeing them, watch watching
them play three games against you know, teams in a
different kind of uniform. Just see what what do you
got here in August?

Speaker 3 (47:11):
Appreciate Jeff.

Speaker 6 (47:12):
