Head coach of the Indiana Pacers Rick Carlisle returns for his weekly appearance on the show. While there was phone issues with his sound quality, he discusses how a matinee start changes the schedule for the team and what the themes have been of the 9-game skid. Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy New Year, and everybody out there certainly safe endeavors

(00:05):
tonight for those that are out there, it's kind of
become typical for the Indiana Pacers where they are hosting
this New Year's Eve game. It's the matinee game, if
you will, so three o'clock right here on these airwaves.
It'll be the Orlando Magic as the Spacers try to
end their nine game losing streak. They've got Victor Webin
Yam on the Spurs then coming up on Friday, talk

(00:25):
more about it. We headed the Payoff Sickers hotline right now.
He is the head coach of the Pacers. He is
a Rick Carlisle coach. Happy New Year to you, Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Likewise, I guess let's just start with the uniqueness of
the three o'clock start that definitely doesn't happen too too often.
What does that do from a schedule standpoint for you
guys in terms of preparation on a day like today,
it just.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Moves everything up a few hours and so on game
days at home, normally we come in in the afternoon
three hours before game time, and we'll do a film session,
we'll do an on court walk through run through, and
then and then get ready to play. So instead of

(01:11):
coming in at four, we'll be in there around noon today. Rick.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Throughout this nine game skid, do you see any overlapping
themes throughout it that you all need to change to
try to you know, obviously snap it tonight In the
year on high note, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I mean we got a we got a fighting consistency,
and there's been a lot of different things that have
come up. Certainly, you know, in the Miami game there
were twenty six turnovers. You know, it's it's great to
have a good offensive nights and get thirty assists, but
then when you get twenty six turnovers or whatever it was,

(01:50):
thirty seven points or something like that, you just can't
you just can't survive. So at times, rebounding has been
a big thing out basically the game against Houston, you know,
their with their ability to rebound, that was going to
be a challenge. I've been a lot of things, but uh,
no excuses. You know, another opportunity today against a very

(02:14):
good Magic team, and uh we'll have to be ready again.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
That's three o'clock today, Pacers in Magic. Brick Carlisle with
us here, coach. I think it was over the weekend.
Both Pascal Siakam and TJ McConnell had some comments after
I think it was the Boston game. You know, SIMS
had something effective. You know, it didn't feel like you
guys tried it hard enough on offense. I think McConnell,
you know, mentioned, you know, not fighting the way that

(02:39):
we usually do. I know, the effort word is probably
a word that gets a lot of attention. Have you
been pleased with the effort amidst a season that's obviously
been very trying.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Overall, we can all do but.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Pace, said Coachrick Carlias. With this year on the Payloffs
Lookers hotline starting lineup Johnny Furfrey, He's gott a little
run here as of late. I know Aarony Smith is
getting back to work. Uh you've mentioned Furfy easy guy
to root for when you say that or easy got
to like maybe what is it about his game that
from a coaching standpoint, he's a guy that you like
having out there.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
He goes hard. He you know, unconditionally gives you everything
he has. On a team where running is a real priority.
I mean he always runs hard, He always does his
job in that. In that respect, the other thing is
you know, there there are are other things. I guess

(03:42):
I should say. He rebounds the ball. He's a very
active crasher offensively and a very good defensive rebounder. And
he's he's just super unselfish, you know, and in plays
with with a with a boundless energy and always a
very very very good spirit. So you know, guys like

(04:04):
that are winning type players, and you can never have
enough of them, I guess, I guess I guess you
you should say you never have too many of them.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Rick you talk about, you know, not having too many
of those types of players. One of those I would
imagine is Pascal Siakam ninth in the All Star fan
voting for the Eastern Conference. How do you have you
have you seen him navigate this season and be a
leader when you know obviously he wants to win it
all costs.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah, it's it's been a difficult challenge for for him
and uh, Billy, all the guys coming into this, you know.
So look, it's it's important to communicate with all the players,
particularly the leaders. So I spent a lot of time,
uh talking with him and Andrew Nemard and aaron Nie

(04:56):
Smith and just you know, keeping a pulse on say things,
hearing them out what they see and feel on the court.
And you know, we always, all the time have to
be in a problem solving mode, even when things are good.
And you know, right now it's you know, we're not
in one of those periods. But in the NBA, it's

(05:20):
you know, it's difficult. You know, every game is hard,
every team is good. Margins are always slim, mars are
particularly slimming this year, and we got to understand that.
And and uh, we got to do everything we can,
you know, to push things beyond the point where you know,

(05:42):
an ordinary effort just isn't enough. So again today another
another really strong challenge. Uh. But the magic but great
thing about the NBA you never has to wait too
long to play again.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, it's the afternoon game again in Magic three o'clock.
We appreciate Rick Carlisle joined us on a game day
kind of going off James's point with Siakam, you know,
for you as the head coach, I mean we talked
in the previous segment, I mean, you guys might have
as many transactions right now as the Colts have had
over the course of the seventeen game season. I mean
it's north of I think twenty players have scored a

(06:18):
bucket for you and we're you know, not even close
really to the halfway point of the season. How big
I guess of a challenge has it been for you?
Just from a coaching standpoint AA, How unique and be
how difficult.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Both? Yeah, it's all this has been unlike any year
I've had and I've had I've had years. You know,
we went through the brawl year where we went through
difficult times, suspensions, injuries, everything else. But it's a long
season and so you know, hope, hope springs eternal. I mean,

(06:58):
you've got to keep things positive. You know, we're starting
to get a little healthier. That's a good sign. But
nobody wants to Nobody wants to hear about how hard
things are. And you know, uh, any you know woe
is me type stuff. You know that's not that's not
going to get it.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
We gotta we gotta, we gotta circle the wagons and
do better, simple as that.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Rick you talk about not having a woe is me attitude,
and one of those guys I think you'd probably referred
to in that same realm, Miss Tyres Halliburton, what has
it been like seeing him get to rehab on the
court before some of these home games recently, and perhaps
feeling the injury of the crowd and the excitement of
his potential return obviously next season.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
He's great, He's still great. I would have to think
he's ahead a schedule by some pretty good margin. But
you know, the technology and rehab and those kinds of
everything is so so much better than it was a
few years ago. That look, he sustained the injury. I

(08:10):
forget what time it was, but in less than twenty
four hours, an injury happened in Oklahoma. In less than
twenty four hours, the surgery was completed. And so you know,
you've got you've got a lot of things working in
the favor of today's at me, certainly the timing element there,

(08:34):
private airplanes and all that kind of stuff. And you know,
doctor O'Malley has become a trusted friend of many NBA
teams are are certainly included. And he made the time
and and and that was that was done very quickly,
and that always helps to facilitate a more more positive rehab situation.

(08:55):
So I'm sure people have seen, you know, a lot
of the a lot of videos posted. You know, he's
going to basketball, he's doing a lot of sprinting, he's
doing a lot of you know, everything gets ramped up,
and I think every couple of weeks there is a
new element introduced to the rehab. And to this point,

(09:20):
he's done very very well with everything.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
Rick onet to this and again we appreciate the time
here on a game day. I believe this is the
final day for you as the head of the Coaches Association,
a very lengthy run for you in that role. Any
partying gifts an any final day, I guess the virtual
party that they're having for you now.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
He had a call a couple of days ago with J. B. Beckerstaff,
who is the incoming president, and just you know, went
through with him sort of you know, all the things
that have kind of going on over over my twenty years,
a lot of the situational things, a lot of the

(10:06):
people that you know, I've had the great opportunity to
work with in the League office and in many other places,
and just giving him a few recommendations about the starting
point for him and stuff. But I'm very very excited.
I mean, this is this was this was the right
time to pass the torch twenty years, you know, it

(10:28):
is very very long time to do this. He is
a great selection by our membership, you know, in the
election process. Passionate guy, Uh, natural leader, you know, very
very very enthusiastic about the coaching profession. His dad, Bernie

(10:52):
Becker Staff, is the guy that you know, I believe
at some point we'll be in the Hall of Fame
as a contributor, you know, first ever African American president
of an NBA franchise. He's a great coach, and he's
been a great mentor for many, many decades to so

(11:13):
many young coaches and players, myself included. And so JB's
learned many great lessons from his dad. And uh, this
will be, uh, this will be an amazing experience for him.
You know, there there are a lot of good things
on the horizon with the league. There are some there
are some challenges to be faced, but things are in

(11:34):
a in an overall a good place. And I'm excited
for him and uh, you know, excited to be transitioning
out of that position.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Well, congrats on that. A happy New Year to you
and Donna and the family, and good luck this afternoon. Coach.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Okay, thanks guys, Think care Rick.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Carlisle pay Less Liquors Hotline. We'll do it one final
time here on the Rose Bowl Eve. It is the
fan morning
