Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning everyone, Welcome into a Thursday. That means that
eight thirty it's time to talk to the one only
Thad Model, the head basketball coach of the Butler Bulldogs,
and we'll catch up with him coming up in just
a few minutes. But Kevin, we've talked about this last
couple of weeks. They got something going on there. I
know they struggled in their last game out. I ga
it's a really good basketball team in Yukon, but I
kind of like what they got rolling right now.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yeah, the Jalen Jackson and Jay I do think is
a big one. It's a lot on the plate of
Finley Bizjack and Michael Jay right now for Butler and
Stink Robinson. You know, the freshman is now being asked
to start and obviously handle the ball a whole lot here.
So you know, the Big East doesn't have maybe as
much top end I think talent outside of Yukon, so
there is some opportunity I think for Butler to be
(00:41):
up there. A pretty good non conference need to I
think close it out with a neutral court win over
Northwestern coming up on Saturday, and then you know, get
a couple there in the Big East and if you
do that right now. If you look at the early bracketologies,
they're kind of sniffing right around bubble maybe slightly in
the tournament and some of those projections.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Yeah, they had the conference loss seventy nine sixties to Yukon,
but have done well in the non conference, in the
conference tournament and Scott not tournament schedules. Coming right up
in a hurry and joining us now is the head
coach for the Bulldog stat Mata Fad. Good morning, and
welcome into the Fan Morning Show. We were just talking
about the fact that I know you've got a couple
of big injuries over the last week or two, but
for the most part, you're pretty happy with how things
(01:21):
have gone this first part of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
You know, entries are part of it, and uh, you know,
you you I'm gonna kill And Sampson once told me
back who was Oklahoma was his Xavier. He said, we're
all sprained ankle away from mediocrity and it's it's amazing
what injuries can do. But you know, I like where
we are right now. I think just from the standpoint
(01:46):
of you know, the the Yukon game the other night
was a was a good lesson for us. I mean,
we have to play better, we have to play tougher,
we have to play stronger. Uh, you know you're in
in that environment and you're playing a great basketball team,
and we know we didn't get it done, So got
to come back and get yourselves ready to go again
(02:08):
on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I want to go back to last Saturday, and we
haven't had the chance to chat with you since, but
that was one of the wilder games I've watched in
quite some time. And you've obviously coached over seven hundred
of them, so you probably have a little bit of
a different perspective on it. But I just thought that
hustle play Michael Jay made there in the second overtime
was just to me. If I were a coach, I'd
(02:30):
just be that's teach tape one oh one of what
you show your guys in creating a play there. And
Evan Haywood obviously knocked at home after that. But what
did you make of just the back and forth nature
to what you guys had to go through on Saturday?
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Well, do you remember I told you guys last week,
I said that that was gonna be one of the
most entertaining games in Hinkle I had no idea that level.
And now, you know, I thought that that was one
of the most I don't know, like high powered games
have ever coached in just in terms of the back
and forth and some of the plays that were made,
(03:05):
uh throughout the course of the game by both teams.
To be honest with you, and you know, it's funny.
After the Boise State game, uh, where we missed two
dunks in the first half to start the game, I
told the guys, I said, look, you know, next time
you miss the dunk, it's a suicide. Next practice, you
know where you run. I don't know if you say
that nowadays or whatever, but Gasser or whatever. And so
(03:28):
after the game, I told Michael, I said, look at
my discretion because you missed the dunk to play after it,
I'm not going to run you. And uh, you know
that was that was a you know, just a high
level play on his part and and just the awareness
for Jamie to kick it to Evan for a great
wide open shot, you know, and and uh uh was
(03:49):
was please get out there with you know, our first
big East win and and uh, you're always in this league, man,
you got to protect your home court. There's no question
about that.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
When you look at the performance again to Yukon, when
you're facing those types of programs and obviously they've been
to where you want to go as far as you know,
being a perennial national contender and things like that, how
much of a measuring stick can that be when you
can show your players, Okay, here is a real, live,
in your face example of the level of play that
we have to try to get to.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
You know, it's funny to asset because it's part of
the teaching we want to do coming out of that game.
Because you know, when when you play a team like Yukon,
when you make a mistake, they automatically make you pay.
And that's something that you know, you hope to take
a page out of that book, because you know, we're
(04:43):
we we took a bad shot. They hit it three
at the other end. We turned it over. They got
to lay up at the other end. You know, just
those those little things we miss a blockout and they
get the rebound and hit a three or get an
in one. You know, those are the things that we've
got to get ourselves to doing. Where you know, we
(05:04):
turned to we had to score at the other end.
Are really be a great shot and you know that
is a very talented basketball team. There's no question about that.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Coach, from your perspective, you know, basketball is a weird
game because of shooting percentages sometimes, so you come out
red hot and you make five of your first date
and then just can't hit anything for like twenty minutes
a game time after that. Like, as a coach, what
can you try and do when your team is just
going through a cold spell like that?
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Well, you have some times sometimes you have a long
talk with the man upstairs and for yourself. But now
you know, it's funny we had that we had that
segment where we missed, we drove in, mister layup, got
to read behind mister layup, missed the tip end and
it's like, ooh, I'm not sure this is our night tonight.
And but you know we we we rely on our
(05:56):
shooting and our three points shooting, and you know, hey,
being one for a and a halftime, and we had
some very good looks and and you know those are
the shots. And and you know you have nights where
you you don't make shots, but you know that's something
that that if you do that, man, it's putting a
lot of pressure on your defense every single possession, and
(06:16):
and uh, you know, hopefully we don't have any more
shooting nights. Like we head up there.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Again four o'clock on Saturday. Over there at Gamebridge, tild
that it's Butler Northwestern and the Indie Classic. Obviously, the
Old Crossroads Classic has kind of turned into Butler and
Purdue at least carrying the Indie flag if you will
over at the NBA arena here, Coach, is this something
you think will continue for you guys playing uh, you know,
and continuing the Indie Classic here over at Gamebridge.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, you know, that's year
we played Wisconsin down there this year in Northwestern. You know,
I think it's a it's a good neutral site game
for us, obviously being here in town, and you know,
it gives our fans an opportunity to come out and
and see us in a different environment in Indy. So yeah,
I like this game for us because it's, like I said,
it's a high level neutral site game.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I like it. Coach, Thanks as always for stopping by.
We appreciate these chats. On Thursday mornings. Have fun on
Saturday at the Fieldhouse and we'll talk to us in
all right, guys. Thanks, there is Thad Mada every week
the Conversation brought to you by Thompson Furniture and Mattress
and Columbus in business since the year before Heinklefield House
open nineteen twenty seven, Lazy Boy, Indiana, mad Smith Brothers Furniture,
(07:24):
Streams and Foster or Sterns and Fosters would say, temper
pedic mattresses, free delivery to the entire Indianapolis metro area.
But it's also worth the drive down to columbusf you're
down there. Check them out Thompson Furniture dot Net. We
appreciate them helping us out to talk to Thad Mada
every Thursday morning here at ninety through five and one
oh seven five the Fan and you talk about one
of those nights. You know, Yukon is the fifth ring
team in the country, and when you're just not hitting
(07:48):
anything inside or outside for up to sixteen eighteen minutes
of game time for the most part, capitat, I don't
know how you recover from.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
That on it.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Yeah, there was a moment in the second half. I
remember Bizjack was wide open for three at the top
of the key. I think it would have got it
to I don't know, seven or eight. And maybe it's
one of those where Dan, certainly Dan Hurley at least
would have blown a gasket knowing him, and then biz
Jack misses it and Yukon comes down and who knows
Ball or Mullins or somebody hits a three, and it's
just one of those like, Okay, you know, probably time
(08:14):
to get back on the plane and make sure you
get the class on time on Wednesday. So would not
shock me at all if we're talking about the Huskies
calling Indie home in that first weekend of April there,
so they look very very good. And again Indie Classic
four o'clock Butler Northwestern and then six thirty purdueing Auburn
over there. It's top twenty five matchup. Auburn has a
(08:36):
team that certainly ran Perdue out of the gym last
year in their way to making all the way to
the Final four. A much different Auburn team, but you know,
can stress you in some ways. So we'll see if
Purdue can finish off their non conference with another ranked win,
another went away from home
