Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. You made it all the way to Thursday,
Week seven of the NFL KICKSOFF. Later on tonight, we'll
talk about that. The Colt's getting ready for a game
against the Chargers as they put their five to one
record on the line against what we think is one
of the better teams in the AFC. But everybody's banged
up there. Everybody's banged up for the Colts. Good morning,
James Boyd, Good morning, Kevin Bowen. KB. We're minding our
own business and we're talking to Josh Downs on Monday,
(00:22):
and we're all joking about, Hey, you gave us a
scare there after the touchdown catch, like maybe you were hurt,
but then you went into the dance. Maybe he was
hurt when it all shook out the other day, right.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, And James, I thought you pointed out, well, you know,
he took a couple of big hits late in that game,
not just that touchdown, if I'm not mistaken, the third
and eight that led to Jonathan Taylor's game winning score.
I want to say Josh Downs maybe even came out
of the game after that play.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, And that was one of those.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Where boy, I feel like I was on the binoculars
a lot on Sunday with all the chaos that happened.
But that was when I was like, wait a minute,
where where is he is? Someone looking at him? You know,
one of those moments day and then all of a sudden,
you know, they score and Brisett starts to lead that
drive and I kind of forgot about it, and the
Colts really never had a meaningful snap the rest of
the game. So unfortunately, you do see this where Traveris
(01:11):
Ward earlier in the year was one of them where
they don't leave the game necessarily due to a concussion,
but then Monday rolls around and symptoms start to develop.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
So yeah, right.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Now, you know, heading into the second practice of the
week to various war Josh downs, both in concussion protocol,
neither practice yesterday, and typically those are not good signs
for that player playing that Sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
What does that mean for the slot for the Indianapolis
Colts coming up on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It's a good question. I wonder if Adi Mitchell will
go out of a doghouse orhere they rolled with somebody else.
I think this will tell us just how much they
believe or don't believe in him.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Revenge again for Adie Mitchell back in.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
That Oh lord, here is some of those questions yesterday
about that. I feel like if I was a player,
i'd have been like, first of all, it's not even
the same team.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
So.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I get I get it. Yes, it's an easy kind
of narrative through out there. Oh, your only loss of
the season is going out west. You got to go
back out there to that same stadium, the House of Horrors.
But it's like it's only a house of horrors because
you made it that. I mean, the loss is one thing,
but for Adie Mitchell, no one affected you on that play.
That was you. So I do wonder seriously if he'll
(02:19):
get a chance to play, or if they'll say, hey,
you know what, we still have Pittman, we still have
Alec Pearce, and we'll roll with Ashton Dulan, We'll put
Anthony Gould out there, we'll call up Lakwan tread Well.
I don't know, but I think that's a very interesting
situation for Adie Mitchell to be in because as we
have seen the last couple weeks, he's kind of been
taking some you know, special teams reps and what I understand,
(02:41):
you know, a scout team stuff like that, where he's
clearly not going to be part of the game plan
at least a big part of it. So how does
that change things, especially with the Josh downs absence being
early in the week, you know, had this happen today
or tomorrow, I don't know how much that changes things.
So unfortunate for Josh. So I did speak to obviously
here on the radio, but after the game as well,
(03:03):
and sounded fine. But like you said, Kevin thinks can
kind of be slow developing over time. And fortunately, you know,
as bad as you want guys to play, I'm always
glad when I hear I'll probably talk to Josh about this.
It's like you recognize thing yourself. I'm not good because
obviously no one else caught it, but you the person
who's feeling it.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Well, we'll talk about the Colts and what they're gonna
do there wide receiver all morning long. It's a big
game for them as they have a kid. Look, there's
no way around it, Kevin. They're five and one, and
the Chargers are a team that everybody thinks is gonna
be there at the end. Another opportunity to not only
get a road win, but just not's another one on
your belt for an AFC opponent. This is a big
(03:44):
game for the Colts.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, I think it's I think it's a great test.
I'm very high on Justin Herbert as a football player,
and I don't think the Chargers have a lot of
other guys that are pretty good.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
Now.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
They're banged up in their own right in some specific
areas that are critical to the game. So you know,
how can each of these teams obviously attack their weaknesses.
They're really banged up an offensive tackle, for example, and
they've struggled in stopping the run, which you know should
make Jonathan Taylor be pretty pretty excited about this matchup here.
So I think it's one of the better games in
(04:15):
Week seven. I think we've kind of been waiting. Me
speaking from my own standpoint, I've kind of been waiting
for this since the Rams game.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
You know, it's like the Raiders and Cardinals were a
little bit of a.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Slog for me.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
I can only imagine. I think the Colts feel that.
You know, it's not often Shane Steichen immediately mentions the
next opponent postgame. You know, Josh Downs even mentioned it
running off the field on Sunday, Like, I think the
guys knew that.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah, Raiders, Cardinals, it's the NFL.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
You take everybody the same, Yeah, whoopie do this is
a little different. You're in the four o'clock window. CBS
sending their second team Justin Herbert is not Jacoby Brissett
and Gino Smith. I think this one does carry a
little bit more weight.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
All right, A lot of good stuff. I don't know.
There was no Pacers game last night. There was no
really local action to take part in. Are you still
on the baseball bandwagon? Do you watch any of the
Blue Jays? And no, you're out on that.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I'm a Dodgers guy, you know. Just just pay the
best players and make sure that they win. I support
teams that spend money to be good.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
So you're all about buying the success.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Let's go absolutely. I think it's ridiculous when teams try
to act like it if there's some badge of honor
for being Oh you know what, our payroll was actually
ten times less than theirs, and we took them to
how many games and you still lost? Don't care spend
the money.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Kevin, you partaking any baseball last night?
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Did you let it go by, I did not, so
have we really had five games in the championship series
and the road team has won every single game?
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Is this correct?
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Every single one? Wow?
Speaker 2 (05:47):
So Joel Erickson should be feeling good about his Brewers
getting back to work tonight.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Yeah, and look at everybody last night. It started off
with a Julio Rodriguez leadoff home run in the first innings.
Back to back home in the first inning for him
in two games, and everybody's going crazy in Seattle. And
you think, all right, Mariners are rolling right now, this
is their year. And Toronto put on the hit and
sticks like every Vlad Guerrero got on base five times,
(06:13):
he was four for four, he had a home run.
He was just a one man wrecking crew last night.
And the Blue Jays are back in it now. Two
games to one for the Mariners. So a lot going on.
And they got NFL coming up later on tonight. Pacers
don't play till tomorrow. We got college basketball starting tomorrow,
so we're getting ready to head into a very busy time.
And like I said, I wake up every morning and
(06:34):
I checked just to make sure. Yes, Indiana football is
still ranked number three in the country. Yes, the Colts
are five and one right now. Yes, everybody's excited about
possibilities for Indiana basketball, though nobody really knows what's going on.
And Purdue is ranked number one in the preseason poll
for the NCAA Men's basketball So it's good time to
(06:56):
be here, man, Yeah, probably a really good time to
be here.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
Probably could wait on minching Indiana basketball with those other
teams given their recent history here. But I know a
fun event tonight over Gamebridge field House, the Monon Spike
match Indiana's volleyball team against Purdue's volleyball team inside of
a Gambridge field House.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
There's ranked now, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
I think India is having a year that they haven't
had in a long time, and Purdue has traditionally been,
you know, very good Big ten team, so I believe
a ranked versus ranked matchup there.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
So live volleyball always.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Super entertaining, and I've been hearing for some people that'll
be out there for that one. So yeah, Thursday Night football,
like you said, Jeff, you've got that. The Starting five
Netflix series comes out today with Tyres Haliburton prominently featured
in that.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
So a little bit of Thursday action to lead us.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Into another busy football weekend and the Pacers' final preseason
game tomorrow night in San Antonio.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Curis Is there like a set time that Netflix drops
something on a certain date, like during the day or
is it just midnight comes and you can get access
to it.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I don't Well, if it's out there, please don't turn
it on till ten on one am.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
All right, you don't want to know anything about it, right,
no spoilers.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Well, I would like for them to watch our show,
and I got ten on one am.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
I hear that's how that goes. But I'm just wondering,
like when we get off the air for.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Yeah, yeah, I cannot say I've opened up Netflix too
too early in the morning. I don't know when they
say October sixteenth, don't they mean does not mean midnight.
I'm sure you've got some people out there that are
probably waiting until twelve oh one.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
I'm not a big was that you last night? I
know you got to get up early this week? But
were you? Were you standing by?
Speaker 5 (08:31):
I was not. But you know, there's aggregators out there
that are just skimming through the series right now, trying to.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Get social media clips right and clicks.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Cliff of Kevin Durant talking abound. All eight episodes are
released at once. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's correct.
So yeah, forty five minute episodes here. But again, you know,
for the selfishness of us four in the studio told
off to ten on one.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yeah, how to go with your dad yesterday after you
guys were just going after each other on the text
line yesterday.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
No, we're good. We we We didn't take it personally.
We have that type of relationship. But yeah, we're all
take it personal. Cab went right after you tell me
that brought you what. I'll take you out.
Speaker 1 (09:10):
You went right after your doll this time. What's the
old one? To make another one looks just like you?
Speaker 2 (09:17):
I have heard that that is some of these are aggressive.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Yeah, I heard. I need to like involving into my daily.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Just when they pushed back a little too hard. I
brought you into this world. I'll take you out. Make
another one that's just like you? All right. Also, before
we take our first break, get ready for a checkdown
this morning, I want to say happy anniversary to my
lovely bride now twenty one years congratulations. Yeah, perfect timing.
When we were on vacation this past summer. We went
(09:45):
to a winery in France and we ordered a case
of wine and it showed up on the door last night.
Look at that.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
That's all about right?
Speaker 1 (09:53):
How about that?
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Cal?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Should I share what Jeff asked me the other day?
Speaker 5 (10:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (10:02):
What did I miss?
Speaker 3 (10:03):
It's like, We're sitting here after the show, and you know,
Jeff and this is all this is all jokes. He
looks at me, he goes, how's dating in Indianapolis five?
And I was like, and so my response was it
is an answer for you or you ain't. Christine.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
You know, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
I don't want to get you any trouble man.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
You're good enough st be the wing man.
Speaker 3 (10:23):
I could, I can the wing man. I'm never good
I don't ever want to get back in the dating
pool again in trouble with miss Christine. No, I never
want to.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Be in the dating pool ever again. I'm looking over
there and I see a young, good looking, smart guy,
and I'm like, I was, it was in your best interest.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
As the kids say, don't kiss and tell. But I
guess when I'm more serious, I'll be a little more committed.
But shout out to you and Christine.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
Though.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Seriously, it's gonna be a good day. And I'm looking
for other case from France of want to make up?
I say, man, he was looking at me.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
I am skipping out and early this morning because my
son and I got to go catch a plane. We're
gonna go to Los Angeles and check out a couple
of schools out out west today. Can I toss in
one more here? Sure?
Speaker 3 (11:10):
I just gotta speak my mind.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
I think it's a bleeping sick that you're visiting the
campus of Southern California the same week that Notre Dame's
playing Southern cal.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Not only that, but I'm leaving before the Colts play
the Chargers. Sickening.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
If this you know, people have already sent me the link.
I'm sure you guys have seen it.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
If you haven't, every year that the Pope has died, Notre.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Dame has won only nine games. Yeah, I've seen it
a million times. My brother in law sent it to
me this week. I told him to kiss my you
know what. And now Jeff's telling me, oh, yeah, we're
gonna go on to college visit to Southern California. Here,
it's beautiful out there. Can we just back up for
a second. This week, of all weeks, can we back
up for a second? Can you not do that during
the summer.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
When the Pope dies we only win nine games, James,
Let's let's check ourselves for a second. This is Notre
Dame football here, all right, Chuck Down coming up in
a moment, big Thursday for you d football. It's coming
up your way. Will tell you all about everything else
(12:12):
as we continue on ninety three to five and seven
to five of the Fan, Indianapolis Colts getting ready to
go into Week seven of the National Football League. They
are five and one, tied for the best record in
the league. They'll be playing one of the better teams
in the AFC on Sunday afternoon in the Los Angeles Chargers,
kickoff at four h five. Our coverage starts at one
right here on ninety three five and one oh seven
(12:34):
five of the Fan and James Boyd. We got some
unexpected news from a wide receiver, or at least about
a wide receiver from the Colts yesterday.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
What happened, Yeah, Josh Downs was not out there practice.
He did not practice due to a concussion. So he's
one of two players right now for the Colt starter
in concussion protocol, joining Javarius Mooney Ward. But yeah, after
I saw he wasn't at practice, I went back and
found the last couple of plays that he played in
that game, reshared him on social media because I thought
(13:03):
in the moment he got hit pretty hard. But at
the time I didn't think nothing of it, because he
spoke to him here on the radio, and I spoke
to him after the game and he seemed fine. So
obviously those the symptoms were late developing. But yeah, typically
when a player does enter the concussion protocol, they usually
missed the next game at least. So what does that
mean for the rest of the Colts wide receiver room.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
That's a good question, Kevin Bowen, who's going to play
in the slot? I know that we've got ad Mitchell
was a little bit in the doghouse right now, and
Anthony Gold's never really done that. He's played just a
couple of plays outside of special teams in his career.
So what are the Colts options right now?
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Well, certainly, Tyler Warren, I think you start there. You know,
last year when Down's missed, it was mostly Ady Mitchell
and then a little bit more of Ashton Doolan to
start last season. We'll see where Doulan's at too. He
did miss yesterday at the chest injury. For what it's worth,
he was at practice though, But yes, I would assume
a heavy amount of Tyler warrenon in that matchup. Tyler
(13:59):
Warren Derwin James for the Chargers. That's best on best.
So I think that's one you circle just out entertainment purposes.
But we know Downs has been very, very effective, and
how the Colts decide to, you know, reorganize their wideouts
will be interesting. Last year it really stuck out like
a sore thumb. But I feel like the presence of
(14:21):
Warren could help you out in that area a little
bit more.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Yeah, as far as other injuries are concerned, Kenny Moore
the second still working on getting back Mooney Ward's been
in concussion protocol for a while now. Any update on
those guys after yesterday's.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Practice, Well, no, not on Mooney, He's just in concussion protocol.
And then I think Kenny might have been limited in
practice yesterday, which is still progressing from not practicing the
last three weeks, I believe, So we will see if
he continues to progress today if he is a full participant.
But you know, I don't know if there's like a
sure fire answer for you just yet on Kenny Morris
status going into the Chargers game.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
All right, Colts and Chargers four five Sunday afternoon, and
later on tonight in the NFL Week seven kicks off
the Steelers at the Bengals. That one will be I
believe on Amazon TV. That's the Thursday night package these days.
All right, let's talk college football. I you hosting Michigan
State at three point thirty on Saturday afternoon. They are
sitting there with a number three ranking and a lot
(15:16):
of expectations now, and Kurtzignetti keeps talking about Kevin how
they just have to play who's in front of him,
not get ahead of themselves, and do the things they
they keep doing. This is probably a pretty good test
these next couple of weeks to make sure they just
stay on track, don't lose focus of what they're doing,
and don't overlook some of these teams that on paper
look inferior.
Speaker 2 (15:34):
Yeah, and I didn't realize Michigan State was such a
dysfunctional mess.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
Their trouble h Indiana about a.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
Four touchdown favorites, lots of people calling for Jonathan Smith's job.
He's only been on the job for a year and
a half. I believe they've lost to was it UCLA?
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Maybe I'm trying to think. Could they recently lost to?
Speaker 2 (15:53):
And I guess they had some players that came from
Michigan State and they called them out after the game
of like there's no effort, blah blah blah. So Michigan
Jonathan Smith, for those unfamiliar, came from Oregon State, never
really had big ten Midwest ties, and it just sounds
like this marriage is not going anywhere. So I was
a little surprised the line was that big. But this
looks like the ultimate homecoming opponent for Indiana and they
(16:13):
should beat the doors off Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
Oh wait, so real quick, you said that Michigan State
had players transfer.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
That played on UCLA and then they played their former
team and after the game they were like, yeah, they're
all checked out, they're not showing any effort.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
So the new players on Michigan State called out their
new teammates saying no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
The UCLA players that transferred from Michigan State calling out
they're old.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
Oh teammates. Sorry, if that's told them.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
It like it'd be like Indiana playing James Madison and
Aidan Fisher calling out the James Madison players.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Oh, I see what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
If that makes it?
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Yeah, that is that's cut thrown they had. Honestly, maybe
we should find the clip wait.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Which it should have been a tougher fight.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
I mean, my goodness, I forget what city it was in,
but somebody in again one of their radio people up
there went on just a Jonathan Smith rant, just ripping
him to shreds in how he has acted as a
head coach. They need to fire him this and that,
and like the record is not horrific. I mean it's
not great, but like whatever they're I think you're three
to nine in Big Ten games with them, so obviously
(17:16):
not good, but also not winless, and yet people are
just roasting them. So yeah, Indiana should uh roll.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
All right. Purdue playing at Northwestern and right now the
Wildcats are three and a half point favorites. Vegas likes Purdue.
I do too. I think Purdue's got a good chance
of going up there and getting a win against the Northwestern.
We'll see what happens. Up there in Evanston this weekend
number twenty USC at number thirteen, Notre Dame. Kevin's not
speaking to me outside of the show right now because
(17:44):
I'm gaining to take a trip with my son to
visit a college campus, and that campus happens to be USC.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
He throws the sun in there, Kevin to kind of
get us a soften of I don't know, I'm fit.
I feel like Jeff was like, you know what we
should troll, Kevin Bowen, you don't really want to go
visit some other school, Let's go to USC so I
can tell my coworker where I'm going.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
How many great schools are within driving radius or shorter
flying radius than.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
You have on the school.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
So I've heard there may be a short trip to
Pepperdine while we're out there too. Jees, I don't think
he's personally going to the West coast, but who knows.
It's his choice, so we'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
I'm not worried about Pepperdine. I'm worried about southern California.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Now, just take care of business on the football field
Saturday night and you'll be Okay. Seven thirty, you're already nervous,
aren't you? Indeed? All right, So that's what's happening in
college football. College basketball tips off tomorrow night up at
Hinkle Fieldhouse. Notre Dame plays at Butler. We'll talk to
that Mada this morning at eight thirty about new and improved,
(18:48):
a lot of new players for Butler, new new injection
of life into that program they're talking about. So I'm
looking forward to hearing what coach Mada has to say
coming up at eight thirty. You'll be able to hear
that game on our sister station.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
Now.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Now we are the rights holders to Butler basketball this year,
but because they bump up against the Pacers so many
times and Pacers have priority, a lot of these conflict
games will go to ninety two point seven FM. That
is Spanish speaking Fuego. But it will start at six
thirty tomorrow night. It will air at seven in The
games will air in English.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Mark Menner speaking Spanish Gardner.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
We'll ask, but that's where the game. But it's a
terrific signal. The reason we chose that one because it's
a great signal. You can hear it all over the place.
Exhibition game.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Just be clear, Butler Notre Dame coming up tomorrow and
obviously Notre Dame for those unfamiliar lots of Butler ties.
Michael Shrewsbury, Brad Stevens's son is on the Notre Dame roster,
so I would think that'd be pretty cool for Brady Stevens,
especially to be back inside hinklefield House tomorrow night where
he probably shot a lot of baskets.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
As a young kid. Say buckets, I'll botch you.
Speaker 6 (19:52):
Say.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Do you think Gordon Hayward, as the executive basketball advisor
will get in on some of these scrimmages. I mean,
better to learn on the all right, you can. He
cannot walk back into Butler and not get some buckets
against those guys. He has to remind them, hey, look
I kind of built this place.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
He's less than a year and a half of being
an NBA player, so let's go levels to this. Yeah. Anyway,
Tomorrow Night's Pacers will be heard right here on ninety
three five and one oh seven to five of the fan.
They'll be taking on the San Antonio Spurs in the
final exhibition game or preseason game, depending on how you
want to look at it of the season. Against San
Antonio seven thirty start eight pm tip off, and of
(20:32):
course the great Mark Boyle will have the play by play.
Anything else you guys want to throw in real quick
on this Thursday morning.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
We did get an answer for our question yesterday from
Wally Cox. We were at top five starting Colts Hoopers
and Moli Cox chose himself, tesus.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Let's talk about it this second. Yeah, let's talk about it.
Let's tease it, all right, So we'll do that, and
we'll also hear about how Kurt Signetti has built culture
in a big hurry at Indiana. I thought it was
fascinating some of his conversation that he had with Joel
Klatt this week. We'll do that next as we continue
at ninety three five and one O seven to five
the fan, Good morning. And I don't know, I always
(21:09):
think of Thursday as a head start into the weekend.
And it's got NFL football later on tonight, and then
we've got all kinds of basketball already coming up tomorrow
night and great football games on Saturday. I am here
for all of it. I'm looking forward to it. A
moment ago, we had those worlds collide football and basketball
because so many NFL players love playing basketball, and a
(21:30):
lot of them will tell you they're really really good
at basketball, and they probably are because they're great athletes. James,
but you were having a conversation with mo Ali Cox
about what yesterday.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
So we talked about this on our airwaves. We were saying, Hey,
if you had to pick five Colts players to be
in your starting five for basketball, who would you pick?
And so we throw out our names, and I believe
it was Kevin who reminded me, Hey, you should ask
some of the guys in the locker room today. So
I went over to Molai Cox, who's got in the
locker room as I're waiting for Daniel Jones because that's,
you know, obviously way more important than this. But I
(22:00):
was like, you know what, we got time to kill.
Who is your starting five? From the former college basketball
player himself form VCU forward and Mary Cox chose himself.
He chose Daniel Jones, he chose Ashton Doolan, and then
I believe he chose Anthony Richardson and I'm missing one
(22:23):
that he chose, so I have to go back and look. Yes,
J T. Twey Mullowow, who, by the way, he played
his AU basketball with Polo bn Caro, who is the
number one pick down there in Orlando. So that's his five.
I was a little surprised that we didn't get some
Riley Leonard Love point forward.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
Daniel Jones is what he called Jones, right.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
Yes, but I told you he could hoop. I mean,
I've talked to the guys about this, and apparently they
had a little pow wow at Butler months ago, right
around the time of like OTA's and Mini Camp and
all that stuff, and they said that, well, I acu
use it for a story a while back, and Jaylen
Jones told me, hey, we were, you know, trying to
figure out a way to bond. You know, we were
in the locker room arguing over who can really hoop,
(23:04):
who can really play? And he was like, you know what,
line it up, Let us go out there and play.
And so they said they went over to Butler and
Daniel Jones didn't have any shoes to play basketball in.
I guess you didn't bring him with him, you know,
from New York. And so they had to find some
shoes first, lace the shoes up, and then he told
me that this is Jalen Jones, that is he said
that Daniel Jones started hitting them with some moves that
(23:25):
were like some Dirt Novinsky bleep bleep bleep and some
Tim Duncan bleep bleep bleep that I can't repeat. But
he's a bad you know what. According to his teammates, we.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
Should get like nine of those guys and then Gordon
Hayward over there at Hincklefield House and Gordon can show
him what's what.
Speaker 3 (23:42):
Well, yeah, I mean everyone's look a great basketball player
until you see a pro. I'll just say that. So
it was a fun debate. And I'm sure if I
ask anybody else in the locker room, they'll tell me, oh,
how am I not in that top five?
Speaker 2 (23:53):
And Moe did say I feel like we're a little
too big. He was a little nervous. Yeah, not enough
guards to be fair. Yes, again he thinks Daniel Jones
will point forward there.
Speaker 5 (24:02):
Did you guys see the Celtics played a coaches versus
media basketball game?
Speaker 3 (24:07):
I did see this. Why don't we do a.
Speaker 5 (24:09):
Colts players versus colts media basketball game?
Speaker 3 (24:12):
We get James Boy, we get Kevin Bowen. Colts players. Yeah,
I like brother. Just to be clear, you're.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Proposing professional athletes going up against media.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
Man, Celtics did it.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
I mean Celtics did their coaches, yeah, pro some older pros,
and they did.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Joe Missoula, from the sounds of it, wanted blood and
this game is hilarious.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
He's he's just going there with charges man Rick Carlos.
Speaker 3 (24:41):
When he joins us, there you go, coming.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Up down a very good former player himself.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
Oh absolutely, I mean he won a championship. So I
will say this though, Calebs and Dustin. You ever see
football players play basketball, they look like football players who
play basketball. Yeah, I'm not taking a chal I'm not
about to get hid in my chest.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (25:02):
I'm predicting now that if there was Pacers coaching staff
against media, Jenny Boussik is probably the leading scorer.
Speaker 3 (25:09):
I mean, hey, ex again, former pro away from her
General Pargo still on staff.
Speaker 6 (25:15):
He is.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
Oh, he'd give me forty thic mathering these guys one
on one, you know, after practice. So uh yeah, I'm
not checking any of those guys.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
Uh for those keeping pace though, tomorrow night, we've got
basketball everywhere, Notre Dame at Butler, tomorrow night Hinkle Fieldhouse,
and then the Pacers at San Antonio. It's about to
be full on basketball. He's not quite there yet, but
we're getting close. It is college football season, though, and
Indiana coming off the huge road win against Oregon. And
I was talking to an Indiana alum yesterday, good friend
(25:50):
of mine, Jeff Martin Della works at ESPN in their
affiliate relations department, and he grew up in Indiana. He
went to Indiana. He said, literally, he was nearly in
tears at the end of that football game on Saturday.
It's how much it means to folks who've been following
this program and have watched it for decades now, and
they go in, as you said, Kevin a twenty seven
(26:13):
and a half point favorite against Michigan State on Saturday
down in Bloomington. And I was fascinated that Kurt Signetti
spent some time with Joel Klatt from Fox Sports. Joel
does a podcast and he had Kurt Signetti on this
past week. And you know, Kurt kind of took a
bunch of players from his old school when he came
to Indiana, but he also took a bunch of the
(26:34):
coaching staff too. He kept as much intact as he could,
and that's kind of how you start to build and
bring your culture over. I'll let him describe it himself.
Speaker 7 (26:43):
I've been very fortunate to have great consistency on my
coaching staff. You know, my offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator.
I hired a part time coaches at the D two
level for about eight thousand bucks, and those guys have
been with me, you know, eleven twelve years, and that
would be Brian Hayes, Mike Shanahan and Grant came my
special teams coordinators with me about six seven years. And
(27:05):
you know, we're in the top five in the country
lately at the end of the year, you know, in teams,
and we've been really really good this season. But a
number of other people in the organization been with me
a long time, so they know how we do things.
They know how I am. The expectation level. I try
to keep those guys fresh, you know. I mean, when
(27:26):
we're in here, we're efficient, we're organized, we're working, we
don't waste time. And when we're done, I tell them
go home. And I'm the same way with the team
and meetings and on a practice field, I mean, we're
we're a really short practice operation. I mean we'll have
about a thirty five minute walkthrough on Mondays and on
Fridays we'll have about a twenty five minute walkthrough, and
Tuesday through Thursday. I mean we're on that field about
(27:48):
our thirty five hour, forty minutes and off because I
just believe in keeping people fresh and healthy, and the
better people feel physically, the better they're going to be
mentally too. So there's a lot that goes into it,
but it's it's done with people. And you know, we
have great people.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
And how about the fact that I love this, James,
that you have something that you know works, You trust
these guys you've always had, always had success with them.
Then you bring a number of players over as well,
and while you're literally transplanting your culture through the people
and the and the personalities that make it go and
make it what it is. And now you set that
(28:29):
example for everybody else at Indiana, and there is this
expectation that, no, this is how it is from this
coaching staff to all the players we brought over, this
is how you do things. Is working for.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Him absolutely, and I think when we talk about car
Signetti and the rebuild that he's had and how remarkable
it is, it just doesn't seem feasible realistically for anybody
else to do it. I mean, you know, you if
you are a program that's kind of down and out,
you're thinking, Okay, we just got to find the right
guy and he'll fix everything. Man, this is like something
out of a movie. This doesn't happen, you know, every
(29:03):
day or hardly ever. I mean, we'll talk to some
people later today, one of my colleagues, Ralph Russeau, who's
been around college football forever, here in a few minutes
and he'll give some more context to what we're actually seeing.
But yeah, it is inspiring to kind of see what
he's done, what he's built, and certainly the standard that
he has established at this point is what they're going
to be held to going forward. So I guess that's
(29:25):
like the good pressure, good challenge that you're embracing now
that you've you know, won some big games.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
I think staff red tension is a really underrated element
to sustaining success collegiately andrio Brian Haynes, for example, their
defensive coordinator. He was highly sought after last offseason by
blue bloods. And you know when you talk about, hey,
you know, where's Indiana at from a financial sense in
college football, and you know, are they willing to pay
(29:52):
top dollars by all accounts that they did up the
ANNIE for that assistant coaching pool. And I do think
that is a huge deal because if you look at
just look at some of final four teams from last year.
Notre Dame loses their defensive coordinator to the NFL. You know,
Penn State lost Tom Allen. Remember that Tom Allen went
to Clemson. Ohio State won the national title. Their defensive
(30:12):
coordinator left and went through Penn State of all places.
So you know you're talking about you know, three of
the top four teams last year, you know, losing key coordinators.
And for Indiana to have the year that they did,
I get that Tino Sensei, their co offensive coordinator, left
for UCLA that didn't go great for him, you know,
for him to retain you know, two of their guys
after the year they had that I think is pretty rare,
(30:35):
especially in college sports. So you know, even Perdue basketball,
you look at it, Matt Painters had great staff retention
over the years.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
I do think it's a really under the radar aspect
to it.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
Well, they're doing it right at Indiana at this point
in time, they've risen all the way up to number three.
And there. I was listening to a bunch of the
college football programs and podcast yesterday. Almost all of them
are like, Hey, Indiana is legit threat to win the
whole thing. Everybody talks about Ohio State, and you know
you're gonna have your your Georgia's and your Alabama's and
(31:06):
some of the SEC teams. But they really believe, looking
up and down the roster, looking at the coaching staff loot,
the way they play, the way they do things, the
way they dominated on the line of scrimmage against Oregon,
that they are legit to go deep into the College
Football Playoff.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Speaking of the College Football Playoff, we probably shouldn't mention
that I think we've done it yet, James. The one
news item that Shane Stykein did reveal yesterday, it'll be
Riley Leonard one play away coming up on Sunday, not
Brett Rippin. So Riley Leonard will be quarterback number two.
I think Shane did say for Sunday, Yeah, just for
now to anything past that. The ripping thing a little
(31:42):
odd he didn't. I guess he had some travel issues.
He didn't get to Indy until after Wednesday's practice, so
he technically did not practice with the team yesterday.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Were you surprised that it is Riley?
Speaker 2 (31:54):
Do you think the ripping not being able to get
to town quick enough had something to do with that?
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Or you don't care? I think I do care, because, again,
the backup quarterback is important. If Daniel Jones goes down,
that guy's in there and he is suddenly thrust into
a position of leading the number one seed in the AFC.
So yeah, I definitely care. But I expected Riley to
be QB two regardless of who they signed, mainly because
(32:19):
of just the timeline of things that have happened. You know,
if he wasn't with the team on Monday, he just
got there yesterday. Got to get acclimated, you know. And
I think even if you have been like bur Rippin
has in a ton of different offenses throughout the years,
you still want to give him a little bit more
time in a couple of days to say, hey, Okay,
(32:39):
you're going to be the guy we rely on if
this guy goes down. I think you trust Ry Leonard
what he's done in the classroom from studying and being
ready to go, and then you get through the weekend
and then you figure it out from there, like, Okay,
how do we assess it now that we have everyone
where they're supposed to be, like physically in the same area, city, state,
and then we go from there. So yeah, I'm excited
(33:00):
for Ryan Leonard. He's sounded excited about the opportunity, but
he also said he only hopes to get in if
it's a blowout, Like I don't want to go in.
You know, if I'm going in, that means Daniel Jones
is had an injury, and that's obviously what nobody wants.
So yeah, I did tell him though, if you get
in and it's a blowout, you got to ask Shane
and give you a go ball. I'm not with all that.
(33:21):
I'm not with all that. Get in there, and it's like,
you know, when I go to these high school games
and like get the teams are getting bown out. They
put their bench in and they tell the guys, hey,
just run our offense. No, coach, I'm not going to
the league. My parents probably not going to see me
play varsity basketball very often. I'm giving shot. No, no, we're.
Speaker 2 (33:39):
Not running talk to that cheerleader over there.
Speaker 3 (33:41):
I'm not exactly Yeah, I'm trying. You know, I gotta
get some highlights, even if I missed a shot. Yeah,
at any of these days. Can cut that, You can
cut the miss out and go talk to huddle.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
Highlights.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Don't love themselves there. You know you're gonna have to
have some yourself. One thing to note quarterback wise, you know, hey,
who should the cult sign is back up. We have
this debate a little bit in the media because Brett
Rippens's resume is rather non a script.
Speaker 3 (34:05):
There's really not a lot on there.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
He does have four career starts, but really he's only
been a true backup. I's a maybe one year in
Denver for Russell Wilson. A lot of people have been asked, hey,
why not Taylor Heineke. You know that if you look
at the list of backups, or I should say the
list of free agent quarterbacks, Heinike probably has the most
decorated resume of anybody on that list. This is me
(34:30):
assuming things. If I'm Taylor Heineke, and I know this
might sound a little crazy, but Taylor Heineke could probably
be a little greedy if he would like, And by
that I mean this, We have seen the Joe Burrow
injury already this season. We're probably due for one more
quarterback to have a Joe Burrow injury prominent quarterback.
Speaker 1 (34:49):
That is.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
So, if I'm Taylor Heineke and I'm sitting on my couch,
I'm thinking it's week seven, it's October sixteenth. I could
probably wait another month and let's see if in hurt
your playoff team loses their starting quarterback for X amount
of time. Could I then become Nick Foles in Philadelphia
(35:10):
Joe Flacco and Cleveland from a few years ago. Could
I walk into more of a playoff situation and be
the starter here in Indie, Daniel Jones hasn't missed a
meaningful snap all year. If you sign here, then you're
probably landlocked here for the rest of the season. So again,
that's me assuming things with Heinike. Uh, but you know,
I think some people are kind of like, wait, really,
(35:32):
just Brett Rippin well, well, good point, in desperate desperate mode,
and Heinike isn't yet, I would think in desperate desperate mode.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Yeah, I say your point. The trade deadline, I think
is also a factor that could help him in a sense.
Where if you get past the trade deadline, like you said,
if you wait a month, then November fourth the deadline, Yeah, exactly,
and then the Joe Flacco acquisition for the Bengals isn't
an option anymore. You can't trade for anybody, So you're
telling somebody to eat a backup. Yep, high at your boy.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
I think you're both onto something there too. I think
on the other side of that too, if you're just
looking for a backup right now, Tyler, you know, Taylor
Honkey is probably gonna cost a little bit more than
a guy like Brett Rippon at this point in time.
So from the Teams perspective, not only you're saving money
for somebody you hope doesn't even have to play, but
I think you're one hundred percent right Kevin on the
Henekey perspective, wait for a better opportunity to come along.
(36:24):
And the trade deadline also falls into all that. So
I think it's kind of a swirl of all those
things where it wasn't really gonna work out.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
How much do you think you would really cost? Though,
I'm like, you know, I'm looking at Taylor Honekey, like
how much you asking for.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
You're gonna cost a lot more than Brett Rippon.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I would think, yeah, but it's also pro rated too,
so it's like you ain't played, so you can't come
with too many demands here. I don't want to act
like the backup quarterbacks gonna breakwa.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
I think the majority of it is Kevin is right, though,
is where it most of it comes from.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
I think Kevin's always.
Speaker 2 (36:51):
Right to note for Sunday and I again, it's not
it's something I kind of look at each week just
to see if there is any past history here. Justin
Herbert has face Lean Rumo twice and the charge of
it have had a ton of success in those games.
Thirty four points scored offensively in both of those games. Now,
again it's Cincinnati, it's different personnel, but you know Herbert
(37:12):
has seen lou Enrumo's defenses. Last year they scored thirty four.
Herbert actually wasn't greatly efficient in that game, but they
still were able to put up a lot of points.
So certainly there are some questions with the health of
the offensive tackles in LA. That is a massive win
for the Colts. They have to take advantage of that
because depth at wide out versus lack of depth at
(37:34):
cornerback I think is a vantage Chargers in this matchup here,
so five year pass rush to show up.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
They certainly need that, and they have not yet addressed
adding anybody. And I don't know that they're going to
unless you know.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
It's a shame you even have to mention that, like
you say, it's a they haven't added anybody. Let's think
about this defensive line room. You have three first round picks,
two second round pick I believe, two third round picks,
and a fourth and a fifth. So in the nine
defensive linemen you've drafted, all of them have been drafted
(38:09):
in the top five rounds and three first round picks
a third of the room, and then added in the
second round picks over half the room or first and
second round picks. You shouldn't need to go out there
and think about adding anyone's. It's probably the most highly
invested defensive line room in the entire NFL.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
And yet and again.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Your thought, Jeff, is not wrong. I understand why you
bring up, hey, should they add here? But like they shouldn't,
this group should be getting it done and Sunday, Sunday
should be a banner day. You talk about adding highlights.
These guys should be having. These guys should be just ravaging.
Justin Herbert on Sunday with the health of the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
Tackles, how many sucks do the Colts have so far
this year as a team?
Speaker 3 (38:53):
Do you know the number wise pressure rate?
Speaker 2 (38:56):
I think has been kind of like right around twenty
ish in the in the twenties. And I feel like this,
And I was talking with Rick Van Terry a little
bit after the game the other day, I feel like
when I see sacks for the Colts, they're like stunting
sacks or maybe even a little bit coverage induced. Like
I don't feel like they have a lot of just
(39:17):
our guy whips your guy sacks. And again Sunday, you
gotta have that because the Chargers. The Chargers injury report
wasn't great yesterday either. They maybe will get Khalil Mack
back he's missed about a month, but offensive tackle wise,
I think they're still gonna be down their top three guys.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
I only bring that up because I'm looking at the
at stats and I like, see right now real quickly
are the individual stats and there are two Broncos that
have between the two of them twelve and a half sacks.
I don't think the Colts have twelve and a half
sacks as a team, dude, They.
Speaker 3 (39:48):
Mean the Broncos one. We have sixteen as a team.
Speaker 1 (39:51):
The Bronx sixteen ten sacks against the I apologize, Yeah,
they had a bunch. Nick Benino has eight already. But
my point is is we haven't seen a ton of pressure.
Gotten a little bit better, but we haven't seen a
ton of pressure on quarterbacks so far this year.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Yeah, the Broncos are leading the league with thirty sacks.
The Costs actually are seventh in the NFL with sixteen sacks.
Why does that surprise me?
Speaker 1 (40:14):
It just doesn't feel.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
Like that when you look closer to some of these sacks,
Like it's impact plays. It's like the final drive against
the Raiders when it's forty to six, you know, that's
like the critical third down. I mean, think of those
long downs and distances that the Cardinals converted on Sunday.
Those are the moments where you're pinning your ears back
and you can't get home there. So again, just a huge,
(40:37):
huge factor when it comes to, you know, trying to
limit the chargers on Sunday based.
Speaker 1 (40:42):
On what I'm looking at right now, ranked number thirty
in the league, Taekwon Lewis has three sacks. Quity Pay
also has three sacks. That's what I've got for individual
guys right now. So there's six between those two.
Speaker 3 (40:56):
Guys, and I'll get again Latuo's as still one for
his first six games of the year. That's just not
enough for a guy who was drafted as the first
defensive player taken a couple of years ago.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
And yet they're five and one. So there is that Yeah.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
You're actually getting into a store I'll have going up tomorrow.
Is this sustainable on defense? Because they're like fourth in
scoring defense this year, so they're not giving up a
ton of points every game. But when you look at
their third down conversion rate, they're thirtieth in the league.
That is not just from last week. I got a
(41:34):
chance to ask Saya Franklin about that, and he kind
of alluded to some of the success that the Cardinals
had and maybe how that could ascu the numbers. But
I mean, at what point do we look at a
sample size and say this is who you are. You're
a third of the way through the season at this point.
This isn't like We're talking about two or three games here.
So are you a bad third down conversion team on defense?
(41:56):
And if that is the case, is it sustainable for
you to keep winning in this man? The takeaways certainly
helped you. Can't you know, apologize for that. I think
if if any other stat determines winning and losing an NFL,
it's can you get takeaways and can you give us
short fields? And so they've done that, but it's still
as concerning that they haven't been at least moderately better
when it comes to third down. And I think a
(42:17):
lot of it has to do with the fact that,
you know, if you target the middle of the field
for the cults right now, it's money all right.
Speaker 1 (42:23):
Coming up in a moment, we turn our attention to
college football Indiana rank number three Notre Dame with a
big game against USC and the senior college sports rider
for the athletic Ralph Russo stops by next on the
Fan morning show ninety three to five and one on
seven to five to the Fan. We've been talking about
it all morning long, college football right smack in the
middle of everything, and games that are played between now
(42:46):
and the end of the year, like all of them
determine who goes to the college football playoff, and we
might have two again from the state of Indiana. This
show up in the college football playoffs just like last year,
Indiana and Notre Dame. So it's worth talking about. And
of course number three ranking right now for Indiana Notre Dame.
I don't know if they get that win over US
see a twentieth rank team, do they based on teams
(43:08):
in front of them? Obviously? Are they flirting with top
ten pretty quickly here?
Speaker 2 (43:12):
I don't know necessarily about that. I know this, they
lose their seasons over they win.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
You're the most negative guy, I know.
Speaker 3 (43:19):
No, that is a fact. It is a fact.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
But you always go to the losing for Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
First, Well, they're just gonna win out come on, Well,
they have business to take care of after that, you know,
Notre Dame is no margin for air.
Speaker 3 (43:30):
So they lose, they're done.
Speaker 1 (43:32):
They win.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
I think they continue to be in a position to
be in the playoff if they do run at the table.
Speaker 1 (43:37):
I'm just giving you a bad time. I know know
how it goes. Ralph Russo knows a lot about college
football more than we do. Probably that's why we're having
them on the show now ninety three five and one
on seven five to the fan on the pay Less
Liquors Hotline. He is the senior college football writer at
The Athletic. Good morning, Ralph. Thanks for getting up early
and being with us today. We appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (43:54):
Oh, you're very welcome.
Speaker 8 (43:55):
And there's certainly a lot of people who would argue
that I know more than them college football, considering some
of the messages I get in Twitter after I.
Speaker 4 (44:06):
Vote in the poll on Sundays.
Speaker 1 (44:09):
Obviously, we're gonna talk about Indiana a bunch here in
a minute, But pump my boy up here over here,
my Notre Dame guy. I know there's no margin for air,
but make the case for him why this team is
gonna run the table and be fine.
Speaker 8 (44:22):
Oh, I mean they have one of the best offenses
in the country.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
I think there.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
I think if they beat USC it looks really good
for them to do just that. I mean, if you
do the way they've just demolished everybody since A and
M and Miami, and the fact that you play what
essentially are toss.
Speaker 6 (44:42):
Up games against A and M and Miami, who.
Speaker 8 (44:44):
Right now are two of the top five to six
teams in the I mean, depending on your perspective. To me,
they're two of the top five.
Speaker 6 (44:50):
Teams in the country.
Speaker 8 (44:51):
Maybe they're two of the top six, you know, depending
on again, depending on where you have them in your
your personal rankings. Yeah, I I think there's a damn
good chance that they run the table.
Speaker 10 (45:02):
Here.
Speaker 6 (45:02):
I would also say this.
Speaker 8 (45:05):
There's a pretty good chance we're gonna have a nine
and three playoff team. I'm not saying it's going to
be Notre Dame, but like if you just sort of
look at the projections that come to the projection systems,
I don't know if there's gonna be enough ten win
teams to fill this field. So I'm just preparing everyone
because it's gonna feel a little shocking that a nine
(45:28):
and three team, probably from the SEC because they have
the hardest schedules, very well might end up in this playoff.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
Ralph, you have covered college football for how many years?
Speaker 8 (45:41):
I'm very old, so yes, it's been a very long time,
probably you know, twenty thirty years.
Speaker 4 (45:47):
Yeah, it's a long long time.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
And we're very appreciative of your time here at eight
am on this Thursday morning, have you ever received a
text in your life that said, hey, man, could you
come on our radio show to talk about Indiana University's football.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (46:02):
Well, yes, this is a new world we are living in,
as I got to see up close when I went
to Eugene on Saturday, and yeah, I'm watching the Hoosiers,
you know, pretty convincingly not just beat Oregon, because you know,
there was a time, a long time ago when Indiana
(46:22):
went to Oregon and won with about eighty eight yards
of total offense because they got five turnovers from Oregon's
team back in the early two thousands. So but to
see them go there to in a top you know
ten matchup and truly handle one of the most talented
rosters in the country was you know, a little stunning.
(46:45):
And what was also stunning afterwards is to sort of
see it, to sort of be around the signetti experience, right,
the signetti of it all. This sixty four year old Yinzer,
who has become just a.
Speaker 3 (46:58):
Rock star.
Speaker 4 (47:00):
In college coaching, you know.
Speaker 8 (47:02):
To beat the thirty eight year old Dan Lanning who's
sort of the up and coming and everybody kind of
thinks of him as the hot guy. And now again this.
Speaker 9 (47:11):
Sixty four year old dude whose career.
Speaker 8 (47:13):
Has gone from like Alabama to Elon is now the
star in college football with his you know sort of
smirk for a smile is remarkable. It was remarkable. You know,
the what that field, what that scene was like after
the game as well, just you know, Indiana fans refusing
to leave Austin until he left the field too.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
Ralph Russol joining us here on the Palo Circus hot line,
my colleague at the Athletic Ralph, you're talking to James boy.
Thanks for getting back to me with my text. He
texted back immediately and told me he had, Hey, I
can't do winsay can do Thursday. I got a story
I got to write, and I was like, you know what,
I've been in that same world, my friend. You know,
hopefully got the story done and I'm sure I'll check
(47:58):
it out. But you know, like you said, you alluded
to what I you showed and just looking ahead at
their schedule, you know, we talked about Notre Dame possibly
running the table in the year and it feels like
the big test for I you have kind of come
and gone. But as look at the rest of their slate,
that UCLA game in a couple of weeks. I'm like, man,
is that one I should be nervous about? So are
(48:20):
there a couple opponents because cossleball is weird where you're
looking like that's a game that you needs to make
sure they don't you know, stink up or something like that.
Speaker 8 (48:29):
Yeah, I would say I'm still interested to see what
Penn State has left in the tank. The fact that
and you have to go to Happy Valley. The fact
of the matter is like there's still talent on that team.
Speaker 11 (48:43):
You know.
Speaker 8 (48:43):
In fact, that literally was the story I was working on.
Is sort of an autopsy on what went wrong there
over the last three weeks. And hopefully yeah, we'll be
published in a couple hours. It was up a little
late last night in fact, getting the face so hopefully,
so hopefully we got that across the finish line, you know,
so that one again just going to Happy Valley the
(49:06):
interim coach. There is a Penn State lifer, Terry Smith I,
who is sort of the guy who he is very
much the point person on.
Speaker 6 (49:15):
A lot of the recruiting stuff.
Speaker 8 (49:17):
He was one of the original guys that Franklin brought
in there because he's so he's such a good recruiter,
such a good coach, and such a like a Penn stater.
So I would wonder what that team looks like after
it sort of shakes off whatever was going on there
after they lost the Oregon that threw them into such
(49:39):
a bad funk. That's the most talented team probably left
on i U's schedule. I'm trying to think of, like
who else might be there. I don't have it pulled
up in front of me. You're right, Ucla is tricky.
They have found they have unlocked and Eco and made
them their offense a lot tougher to guard card now
(50:01):
now that Jerry Neuheidels is calling the place. But the
thing is again and as you guys noted, Indiana probably
has at least one, if not two losses to play
with here. So even if something weird pops up and
you get sniped by a team in the middle of
the pack in the Big Ten, you still have some
leeway here, especially with that win at Oregon in the bank.
Speaker 2 (50:24):
That's the voice of Ralph Russo again covers college football
for the Athletic and indeed was that SYU Oregon over
the weekend in the year twenty twenty five. I think
the question probably sounds a little different than maybe it
would have five ten years ago. Ralph, is the Indiana
job like somewhat comparable to the Penn State job?
Speaker 1 (50:43):
Or is that still a ludicrous thought?
Speaker 8 (50:46):
I know, you know, I think it's a I think
it is a fair to ask question because essentially, if
your school is now this has always been the case
to a certain degree, but I think it's it's probably
framed a little bit differently now if your school is
willing to invest with players being paid now, you know,
(51:07):
the big stadium and and and IU has good stuff, right,
they've invested in more than just the football coach. But
I think some of the brand value that has been
that has always been, you know, the major factor in
brand value in tradition, which has always been a major
factor in recruiting, that gets chipped away when it's just
(51:31):
about hey man, how much can you pay me?
Speaker 6 (51:35):
Right?
Speaker 8 (51:35):
Because that's why you know, that's that's that's one of
the things that levels the playing field in pro sports, right,
only so many people can only one person can be
the highest paid player.
Speaker 4 (51:45):
On every team.
Speaker 8 (51:46):
So at some point that's going to you know, disperse
the talent around a little more evenly, I do think,
and I'll still align from my colleague on our podcast,
The Audible Stuart Mandel with one hundred seat stadiums, and
I talked to coaches about this. There still is some
brand value out there. There are kids who will take
(52:09):
one hundred thousand less because you know what, Georgia. I
can go there and I can play for championships and
they got nice things, and that's sort of like that's
that's just sort of the factory.
Speaker 4 (52:19):
Right.
Speaker 8 (52:19):
So I do think the Ohio States, the Georgia's to
a certain degree, the Penn States Michigan's have a little
brand value head start on some of the rest. But man, again,
the playing field definitely seems to be leveled. And if
IU is truly invested in being a football school, and
all by all indications they are, yeah, it changes the
(52:40):
conversation on whether, if you know, to just get straight
to the point, whether do you stay at IU or
do you go to a Penn State?
Speaker 4 (52:48):
Do you stay at IU or do you.
Speaker 8 (52:50):
Go to a Florida Right that that is a very
different question now than it was a few years ago.
Speaker 3 (52:56):
Ralph, the last one from me, and again thanks for
your time. And it's not really a question a statement.
I heard you say early in this call that college
football fans are passionate about the rankings. Just put IU
at number one and you'll be the you know, a
big man on campus around here.
Speaker 8 (53:11):
The problem is, and I can't believe, like this is
a great way actually to the sort of another really
great way to describe like where we are in the
college football universe with Indiana. So I ranked Indiana number
five this week, and you would have thought I like
(53:31):
killed a puppy when it comes for IU fans like
and startlingly, that is the lowest they were ranked among
any voters, which I saw and was completely shocked, completely shocked.
So the idea that someone could have Indiana as the
fifth best team in the country and Indiana fans would
(53:54):
get furious at me is I can't like, like ro
world are we living in?
Speaker 3 (54:02):
See you? You were loved there for all those minutes
on this call in the last little you know piccup
there at the end. Man, I don't know these people
wanted to cut you off the air right there.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
Who did you have about are you? Ralph?
Speaker 8 (54:14):
I'm a truth teller. Yeah, this is just you guys.
Are just gonna like get me crushed. Now it's another
wave of it.
Speaker 2 (54:20):
So I had Ralph on Twitter by the way.
Speaker 8 (54:24):
Well yeah it's again, like it's gonna come again. I
got Ohio state number one, Miami number two A, and
m number three. And this is the one that set
everybody off. I have Alabama number four and Indiana number five.
But again, we live in a world where if I
rank Alabama above Indiana, people think I'm an idiot. That
(54:46):
like just it's like where are we like, what are
we even doing here? It's just and that speaks to
the amazing job that Signetti has done and what a
great story Indiana is. I mean, they just they have
been awesome and you could have made a very legitimate
case to rank them as high as number one. I
think that they were, you know, sort of in that
three group of who is going to be three through
(55:08):
five for me, and it was real close and I
landed there and again, send all your complaints to Ralph
d Russo on X.
Speaker 3 (55:17):
What a stand up guy. We appreciate you, Ralph and
we will catch up with you next time, my friend,
thanks so much joining us this morning on the show.
Speaker 4 (55:25):
Yeah, guys, anytime there you go.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
I love that. Though we do now live in a
world where a national sports writer who covers college football
for a living rakes Indiana fifth. People are upset. Think
about that for a minute. That's fantastic if you're a
Hosier fan.
Speaker 3 (55:42):
I love it. I mean, and again, at least he
was able to kind of stand there and state his
case and we can all shake our heads. But it
is cool to get a respective from someone who's, like
he said, done this for twenty thirty years and that turnaround.
He's never seen anything like that. So exciting times for IU.
And who knows, we look up in a couple of
weeks and talking about you know, playoff seating and things
(56:04):
like that.
Speaker 1 (56:04):
Kevin, something tells me Ralph Russo is used to having
a certain fan base every week, regardless of who it is,
really angry with it that they're crazy.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
Nothing like college football, nothing like the SEC. So yes,
I would agree wholeheartedly with that.
Speaker 3 (56:18):
And yeah, I mean I.
Speaker 2 (56:20):
Right now, Indiana's in a position for the bye frankly,
which would be no home playoff game. I know we
got in this debate, maybe we don't need to go
down this path again, but you know, would you rather
have the home game. If you do get the home
game slotted five, six, seven, eight in the seating, that
would be December nineteenth or twentieth. And there's part of
me that just it's hard to fathom seeing the Georgia
(56:42):
Bulldogs on the visiting sideline as snow is falling in Bloomington,
Indiana on December twentieth. Like what, first off, any SEC
team coming to play at Indiana is lol? And now
imagining like all those just warming machines on the visiting
(57:03):
sideline and like all of a sudden, all these Georgia
you know they're used to between the hedges and you know,
a coat at a game.
Speaker 3 (57:10):
What, No, it's you know, not even fat, that is true.
I hadn't thought about it. And now here is the SEC.
Speaker 2 (57:16):
You know, Tennessee came to Ohio State last year and
you know we didn't get as much as that as
I would have liked. Obviously, we got Indiana at Notre
Dame that was very regionalized, but that would be awesome
to get that. And again Indiana right now, they're not
even in that position there. I know Ralph has them five.
I think most people would have them as a top
four team right now, they're one of the bye teams,
(57:37):
which means you immediately go to the quarterfinal, you immediately
go to the neutral site.
Speaker 1 (57:42):
Well, it's gonna be fun to watch it all play
out over the next six weeks or so and just
to see what heights can be attained. And again, it's
gonna be meaningful football for folks that are fans of
college football here in Indiana for the second year in
a row. I mean, think about this, about two years
in a row having Indiana and Notre Dame both in
(58:03):
a college football playoff.
Speaker 2 (58:05):
Well, premature on the team in South Bend, but yeah,
the team in Bloomington and a great, great spot.
Speaker 3 (58:11):
You just I can't cannot be a baseball fan or
like a true college football fans. Let's not act like
they got You're right to be nervous. I'm just saying, man,
to live like that. I feel for so.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
Said the nine and three team's going to get in.
That team ain't going to be Notre Dame.
Speaker 3 (58:27):
Yeah, you know what it is, Kevin. Whenever you talk
about Notre Dame, I just think if we grow hairy
Indy and I'm like, man, I'm glad my boy got
the hair back because he's dose hairs are going to
turn a gray worrying about this team.
Speaker 1 (58:35):
Look, they already have, brother, it's great on you, they.
Speaker 3 (58:42):
Are they have.
Speaker 2 (58:43):
Let's talk in present tent here, let's not talk in
future times.
Speaker 1 (58:46):
It works. The Commissi Texan at two nineteen seventy on
the fan text line and says, if I you los
this to Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game,
do they still get a bye?
Speaker 4 (58:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (58:57):
That's weird how they've done the championship games? Like do
they matter? Do they not?
Speaker 1 (59:02):
They don't seem to matter as much as they should.
Speaker 2 (59:04):
Like, why shouldn't he to be punished for making a
Big Ten title game whereas the third place Big Ten
team doesn't? And I'd have to look back to last
year's games? Who do we have in the Big Ten title?
Was it Oregon?
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Penn State?
Speaker 3 (59:16):
And Penn State ended up hosting? Was it SMU in
that first game? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (59:22):
So I mean, I guess I don't know. Did Penn
State get punched? I would have to look back to
rankings and all of that.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
So I feel coming about this from people who get
paid a lot of money to argue about these things.
Another reason why I love college football is did you
can never agree on anything when it comes to past stuff.
Speaker 2 (59:38):
Speaking of Ohio State, speaking of a possible Big Ten
title game, James, we should mention the Josh Downs injury
from yesterday his brother, of course, Caleb Downs at Ohio.
Speaker 3 (59:46):
State, but I can cushion protocol for him.
Speaker 2 (59:49):
So very iffy for Sunday for him and Trevarious Ward,
both of those guys up in the air for week seven.
Speaker 3 (59:57):
Yeah, not ideal. On a more positive note, Oh, you
did get Kenny Moore the second back at practice for
the first time in three weeks. He was limited due
to his achilles but he's I think trying to angle
to play against the charges. I saw him on Instagram
posting a picture of himself pretty late last night in
his practice uniform, with him standing and looking off at
the distance as if he's like trying to say I'm back.
(01:00:19):
So we'll see what that means in a couple of days.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
I love all the cryptic posts that athletes have these days.
Nobody ever just comes out and says anything. It's always
a picture that you have to interpret or a line
that could be taking three or four different ways.
Speaker 3 (01:00:33):
I will say may Cox followed me back on Instagram
the other day, and I have no idea why. I
was thinking my life is not that interesting at all,
but shout out to him for I guess appeasing.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
He wants you to He wants you to organize a
college bask or a Colts basketball game.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
Maybe maybe I think that's.
Speaker 1 (01:00:48):
What that probably is. All right, Caleb, do you think
it's time to check it down? I do, all right, Hey, Rope,
we're quickly some programming note. Are we gonna have a
problem with the stream coming up in a minute. I
think there's gonna be some maintenance going on right.
Speaker 5 (01:01:00):
Yeah, with our streaming right now, probably in about a minute,
so the YouTube chat might have some difficulty.
Speaker 1 (01:01:05):
All right, Nothing we can do about that. That's just
somehow programmed in way above our heads. I don't know
what that's about. But here's your checkdown right now. You
guys were talking about injuries just a moment ago. Colts
need everybody on deck to take on the Chargers on
the road Sunday afternoon, four h five out in Los Angeles.
You talked about the Josh Downs concussion, the Kenny Moore
second and Mooney Ward, anybody else we need to keep
(01:01:27):
an eye on or worry about heading into this week.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Ashton Doolan did not practice he has today with the
chest injury. He was out there watching practice. But considering
the injury to Josh Downs, you're thinking, hey, Ashton Doolan
also can't go. What does that mean for Ady Mitchell?
In the rest of you Wide Receiver.
Speaker 1 (01:01:43):
Room also been talking about it today. Kevin Riley Leonard
installed as the backup for at least this week, even
though they signed Mark Rippen, or not Mark Rippon, but
Brett Rippon yesterday.
Speaker 2 (01:01:55):
Yeah, Brett Rippon didn't make it to Indy until after
yesterday's practice, so I don't know if that factor in
with it at all, just fully getting him up to speed.
So yes, for week seven, not necessarily for the entire
Anthony and Richardson's day on injured reserve, but yes, for
Sunday in LA it'll be Riley Leonard one play away.
I assume they'll bring Brett Ripping up from the practice
(01:02:15):
squad later this week and he would be two plays
away as the emergency quarterback.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
All right, Cults start at four or five Sunday afternoon
in Los Angeles. You can hear it live right here
on ninety three five one oh seven to five of
the Fan. Our pregame coverage begins on the network at
one p m. We have Matt Taylor and Casey Valier
and JMV and all the other cast members. Rick Venturia,
you'll listen to it all afternoon right here on the fan. Meanwhile,
(01:02:39):
we've got college football for you coming up on Saturday,
when I you the number three team in the nation
host Michigan State Kevin. They are twenty seven and a
half point favorites right now.
Speaker 2 (01:02:50):
Yeah, I guess Michigan State's in a state of massive dysfunction.
A lot of questions about Jonathan Smith, their head coach,
and whether he will still be their head coach. Aiden
Schowser quarterback, and that has been banged up here recently.
So yeah, I was all surprised to see the line
be four touchdowns, but I guess there are a lot
of reasons for that. So last year, remember Michigan State
(01:03:12):
took that ten dozing lead and he's lancing and then
Kurtzignet's bunch said, oh yeah, we should probably show up
and rattled off whatever it was forty something in a row,
so should be a nice homecoming cakewalk for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 1 (01:03:24):
One thing we've learned about a Kurtz Signette team at Indiana,
whether it was the ten to nothing deficit last year
at Michigan State or the pick six and all of
a sudden you got a football game at Oregon this
past week. They don't get rattled. They just go right
back to business whenever they get the football back and
get going.
Speaker 4 (01:03:37):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:03:37):
Great resolve, great resolve.
Speaker 2 (01:03:38):
We have seen here and again the two guys that
to me define who Indiana is all about. Elijah Srodd offensively,
Aiden Fisher defensively. Those dudes are easy to follow.
Speaker 1 (01:03:47):
All right to other games we'll keep an eye on
this weekend Purdue at Northwestern three pm kickoff and Northwestern
is a three point favorite there and later on that night,
usc the number twenty team in the country, visits South
Bend to take on number thirteen. Noted that one starts
at seven point thirty Kevin. Notre Dame is a nine
and a half point favorite in that game.
Speaker 2 (01:04:04):
Yeah, Nerdame did loser starting center Ashton Craig for the
year last week. That's a little bit of a concern
for me here and big picture, what's the future of
this rivalry, I don't know if everybody kind of fully
understands where that's at right now, but some definite disagreements
about what Notre Dame USC will be moving forwards. So
I know that rivalry's meant a lot to a lot
(01:04:25):
of sports fans. So I hope selfishly it continues. And
USC has had a nice year so far. Lost to
James Boyd squad on the last second field goal. They
pounded Michigan last week. I think USC is kind of
a sneaky team in the Big ten.
Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
Hi.
Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
We'll keep an eye on that as far as pro
sports are concerned. NFL Week seven kicks off tonight, Steelers
at Bengals on Amazon. Major League Baseball last night to Toronto,
Blue Jays scored thirteen times to beat the Seattle Mariners
thirteen to four, four for four for Vlad Guerrero, had
a home run, scored four times, got on base five
(01:05:00):
five times. Everything working well for the offense in Toronto,
and Kevin had pointed this out earlier. James the road
team has won every game in both the American League
and National League Championship Series so far.
Speaker 3 (01:05:11):
Baseball makes no sense. It just stresses me. That's only
that makes sense about it is distress.
Speaker 1 (01:05:16):
Later on tonight, the Brewers take on the Dodgers in
Game three of that series. Dodgers up two games to nothing.
That'll be at Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles, and Toronto
plays at Seattle for Game four of that series. The
Ms still lead two games to one. You can hear
that game right here tonight on ninety three five and
one on seven to five to the Fan. Pregame coverage
begins at eight pm. Coming up in a moment, we'll
(01:05:37):
talk college basketball with the head coach for the Butler
Bulldogs that Mada. His team makes their at least an
exhibition debut tomorrow night at Hinkle against Notre Dame, so
we'll talk to him about that. Also, the Pacers at
San Antonio to finish up their preseason tomorrow night, seven
thirty airtime here on the Fan eight pm tips. So
we are going to be very busy over the next
few days with play by play here on ninety three five,
(01:05:59):
and I have the fan all right, head coach of
the Bulldogs right around the corner on ninety three five
and one O seven to five. The fan got to
(01:06:20):
be a basketball season We've already had three preseason games
for the Indiana Pacers, and uh, we'll start seeing some
college basketball at the legendary Hinkle Fieldhouse tomorrow night. Butler
Bulldogs will be hosting a Notre Dame there and Kevin
this gonna be. You know, Indiana's got a whole new
coach and a whole new roster, it seems like, but
Butler's pretty much got a whole new roster coming in
(01:06:41):
with that Mata too.
Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
Yeah, a lot of new guys.
Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
Finley Bizjack one of the few returneyes there. Michael Jai
from Gonzaga Pepper nine I think originally and then Gonzaga.
Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
That is a grown man that has a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:06:54):
Of skill, So I'll be curious to see how he
does in the big He's big year certainly for that
Mada year four and tomorrow night. And I like how
college teams are doing this. You know, Purdue's got Kentucky
next week in the exhibition game. You've got married tomorrow.
Then they'll have Baylor. I believe that's next weekend as well.
I like how it's turned into this. Of like some
Marque opponents and of course Notre name a lot of
former Butler ties, Michael Shrewsbury, Brady Stevens, the son of
(01:07:17):
Brad on their roster. So I like how college basketball's
kind of evolved to this as we get some of
these marquee exhibition games and they're not those like secret
scrimmages behind closed doors.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Well let's find out more about this team coming up
in twenty five twenty six. The head coach of the
Butler Bulldogs on the line with us on the Payless
Liquers Hotline. That would be Thatad Man, a coach. Good morning,
Welcome into the Fan Morning Show.
Speaker 4 (01:07:37):
How you doing I'm doing well. Good morning guys.
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
Boy. You have been under construction. You've had a lot
of work to do over the last several months. Tell
us a little bit about what's been exciting about it
for you and what you're looking forward to.
Speaker 10 (01:07:49):
Yeah, you know, it has been a lot of construction.
I will say that we had eleven new players, and
you know, of the last year's team, Finley, you know,
played a lot of minutes. Evan didn't play a ton,
Jamie Kaijer was out, and Ethan McCombe, you know, spurringly
played a little bit. So it's it's been a it's
been a long process, but uh, you know, I'm pretty
(01:08:11):
pleased with what we've done. I think the eleven guys
that we've added number one, I think we brought in
really good kids and they've got a tremendous work ethic. So, uh,
it's been a it's been a fun summer and and
uh into the fall here of just trying to put
everything together and and you know, quite honestly, I think,
like a lot of teams in college basketball, we're still
learning our team. I think you know them all Night's
(01:08:32):
game will let us know a little bit more about them,
and uh, just sort of you know who we are,
what we got to get better at.
Speaker 3 (01:08:38):
Coach, when you look at this opportunity you have tomorrow night,
how big is that, like you just alluded to just
to I guess set the standard or set up barometer
for where you are right now and versus where you
want to be because you know in under name, yeah,
it's an exhibition game, they're not coming here to lose.
So what do you think that experience will be like
as you try to get this group more integrated with
each other?
Speaker 10 (01:08:58):
Well, yeah, I think the big thing for us because
this is really an early game and and I think
for both us and and them, this is gonna be
a good experience to sort of gauge.
Speaker 6 (01:09:11):
You know.
Speaker 10 (01:09:12):
I know for us, because you get to this stage
of practice and you're saying, what are we missing? What
do we get better at? And when you're going against
the same guys every day, it's probably puts a little
bit of blinders on you.
Speaker 4 (01:09:23):
And you know, I know for us, and I think
Notre Dame is going to do the same thing.
Speaker 10 (01:09:26):
I mean, uh, they gave me a.
Speaker 4 (01:09:30):
Minute sheet the other day.
Speaker 10 (01:09:31):
The coach is presented to me one of our guys
did when he was with the Bucks for an exhibition game,
and it looked like it was Chinese to me, with
with all the substitutions and stuff we're going to make
because we got to play guys, it was it was
it was mine. I'm just like, all right, just centnamon
when they're supposed to go in. I can't look at
this sheet. But uh, I think for us, we've we've
got to get everybody we want. We want to get
(01:09:53):
our freshman in the game. We want to look at
some some different combinations. Uh. You know, Jalen Jackson just
started going in full court this week, so he's on
a minute restriction tomorrow night, and and you know, yeah,
like I said, we want to win the game, but
I'm more focused on trying to get this team better
and seeing sort of what we've got as we you know,
(01:10:15):
build for November fifth.
Speaker 4 (01:10:16):
I think it is our home opener bad.
Speaker 2 (01:10:18):
Do you like how college basketball has gotten to this
state with the exhibition games of the old secret scrimmages
now seem to be more in the public eye against
you know, quality opponents.
Speaker 4 (01:10:30):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 10 (01:10:30):
But you know, the one thing about the secret scrimmage
is that, you know, we played Illinois last year and
it was great because you know, Brad and I could
stop at any given time. And you know, I know
we ran something one time. He's like, stops, I'll run
that again for us. And you know, I mean you
you were teaching more because we had asked if we'd
have like a no foul out rule, and they won't
(01:10:52):
let us do that. And I mentioned it's a Notre dame.
Can we have as many thirty second timeouts as we want?
And I guess we can't do that, So I guess
it's like a real game. But no, I you know,
my biggest focus on we we had to continue to
get this team better and and you know, hey, you're
gonna have film after the game against different opponents, and
(01:11:15):
I think no names of the team this show.
Speaker 4 (01:11:16):
Really do, so, uh, it'll be fun for guys.
Speaker 10 (01:11:19):
I know they're excited to bang heads against somebody else
besides ourselves.
Speaker 2 (01:11:24):
Definitely a new look to this Butler team here coming
up here for the second stint if you will for
Admana and you can obviously hear Butler games on our
airwaves and our sister stations coming up this season. We
saw the announcement earlier this week coach of Gordon Hayward
gonna help you guys out in some capacity here. I
think we've seen some of these, you know NBA players
wanting to do this with their respective colleges here over
(01:11:46):
the last few years. What exactly will Gordon's role look
like in retirement.
Speaker 10 (01:11:53):
Well, number one, I mean, what a what a great
thing for our program.
Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
To have him involved in.
Speaker 10 (01:11:59):
And I mean you you you think about Butler basketball,
and he's definitely a poster child. And I think you know,
anytime you can get a guy like that around your program,
around our players, I think it's gonna be great for us.
I mean him him, He's coming in and day to
practice and you know, just getting to know our guys
(01:12:19):
and and know our staffs and and that sort of thing,
you know, in terms of the recruiting, I think that uh,
you know, having somebody like that that can can talk
to a family say look, here's here's what Butler University
did for me. And I think it would be hard
pressed for somebody to say, well, I think I take
that route to uh, twelve years in the Star two
(01:12:39):
Max contracts.
Speaker 4 (01:12:41):
Uh, it was. It was a great situation. So oh yeah,
we're we're very, very.
Speaker 10 (01:12:45):
Excited to have him around and and uh, you know
the extent of how much, I'm not exactly sure, but uh,
you know, he spoke to the team last year in
New York and uh, like I said, I'm just I'm
elated to have him, you know, involved with us and
and uh looking forward to building a relationship with him.
Speaker 3 (01:13:01):
He's got to be in these scrimmages, right, He's got
to be. He cannot be this close removed from playing
professionally and come out there and like slides. So whatever
you do, coach that, please make sure Gordon, Hey, we're
just you know, reminds me young, is that. Hey, back
in the day, I used to do this for real.
Speaker 4 (01:13:19):
No, there's no doubt about that.
Speaker 10 (01:13:20):
And I think he only played two years and now
it's crazy is they may give him two more years.
Speaker 4 (01:13:25):
Who knows.
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
The the world has changed a little bit.
Speaker 10 (01:13:29):
You know, they're just handing guys years. Maybe we can
get him back.
Speaker 4 (01:13:36):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:13:37):
There you go, Hey, front court depth a little bit
of a problem last year. Where are you at right
now as you look at this kind of newly constructed team,
how are you feeling about that?
Speaker 4 (01:13:45):
You know, I I like our depth.
Speaker 10 (01:13:46):
We're really athletic at the at the five spot. And
you know, we added Kevin in the a couple of
weeks ago, and he's a little bit banged up right now.
Speaker 4 (01:13:56):
You got hit the other day in practice. I don't
think he'll go to them all night.
Speaker 10 (01:13:59):
But with Johann and Drayton, it's a different look. I mean,
they got signs, they got athleticism, and both guys played
extremely hard. It's kind of refreshing to see out there.
Speaker 1 (01:14:13):
Well, it's always good to talk to you, coach. We
look forward to our weekly visits with you as the
season rolls along, excited to have you back on the
radio station and excited to get out of Hinkle again
and watch some college basketball, which is never a bad thing.
Speaker 4 (01:14:25):
Yeah, absolutely, I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (01:14:27):
All right, we'll talk to you soon. Thanks so much.
Speaker 4 (01:14:29):
All right, guys, have a great day, you bet.
Speaker 1 (01:14:31):
Also, people are a planning on going out there tomorrow.
They're going to debut the brand new video board fourteen
feet tall over mid court, so that'll be kind of
fun to watch too, as Hinkle continues to get upgraded
and updated a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
Always enjoy a went well, I guess a fall night
in this case, but a winter night inside of that place.
One of the Saint John's game last year. That was
a rocking environment there and the Big East. You know what,
two teams right in the top five I think in
the preseason poll, I think goes ukon of Saint John's
back to back if I'm not mistaken in that poll there.
Speaker 3 (01:15:00):
So big year for Butler.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
Need to get back in the tournament and we'll see
how a roster that I think has got a lot
more length, lot more depth to it and in recent
years should be better to hold up defensively than they
have in years past.
Speaker 1 (01:15:15):
Yeah, I think they played in the n I T
two years ago and then the brand new Tournament last year,
the brand new college basketball tournament they had last year.
Speaker 2 (01:15:22):
Yeah, there's a net of those postseason tournaments. They hand
those out like Oprah.
Speaker 1 (01:15:26):
Yeah, well I want to get back to the n
this year. You get one, you get one, you get one.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
I mean, hell, they hand out into a tournament bid.
It's like it's Oprah.
Speaker 3 (01:15:35):
They're trying to expand it. So yeah, a.
Speaker 1 (01:15:37):
Long time ago, I was, I was dating a girl.
She we went to Chicago for a weekend and she
drug me to an OPRAH taping.
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
Well there you.
Speaker 1 (01:15:44):
Go, So there you go. Now says like, check that
one off the list.
Speaker 2 (01:15:47):
Therefore you.
Speaker 3 (01:15:50):
Don't play this part of the show.
Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
Hey, clearly Christine was the one, because twenty one years later,
here we are.
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
You can dig yourself out of that one, which was
way before I even met her. Way, if you want
to transition to colds or something there by all means.
Speaker 1 (01:16:03):
Always trying to get me in trouble. Kevin A long
time ago. Yeah, nobody else even exists before that, nothing
ever happens exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:16:16):
That's how you gotta treat you anniversary.
Speaker 1 (01:16:19):
It's probably best because what happens is eventually you meet
the one you know she's the one, and nothing. That's it.
Speaker 3 (01:16:27):
He said, we have a break, Caleb, to head is over.
We do, I said, Jeff stepped on a rake, but yes,
break as well.
Speaker 1 (01:16:33):
Before we get to the break, though, uh, text me
seventy the words thad Mada, bad Mada, and we'll hook
you up with some tickets to tomorrow night's game Notre
Dame taken on Butler a pair of tickets to go
see that one tomorrow night at Hinklefield House. Bad Mada
at nine seventy will continue the show after Kevin tries
to get me in trouble even further on ninety Out there,
(01:17:15):
I'm feeling attacked, Caleb. Look at that fourth on the
job and he's right there.
Speaker 3 (01:17:21):
Right there is awesome. Caleb, you are one of us,
not that you weren't before, but that right there is
like a write a passage, initiation, initiation.
Speaker 1 (01:17:30):
I'm just calling on my friend once again that I
am married twenty one years today through the most wonderful, perfect, smart,
intelligent person ever. I have what she's doing with me.
I have no idea but I'm happy. Good last.
Speaker 3 (01:17:47):
Like I said, if he comes back with a black guy, y'all.
Speaker 1 (01:17:50):
Nothing to do with my wife, whatsoever. Nothing to do
with it. Whats USC?
Speaker 3 (01:17:53):
Pepperdine? Is that where you guys are heading?
Speaker 1 (01:17:55):
Yeah, I'm gonna go check that out here. Beautiful campuses. Yeah,
it's uh. I've been to. I've done games and been
on campus for both places. Pacific Palisades is just like
a little little paradise in the middle of Los Angeles
out there. And of course USC is kind of on
the fringe of downtown there, and it's a great campus.
It's right there next to Memorial Coliseum too, it's right
(01:18:17):
there on campus.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
Well, just so great. You know, I'll be there Saturday.
Just let him stay back with me. We'll go to
the game together. I'll I'll bring them back. You one
piece opera. You guys gonna have any overlap?
Speaker 2 (01:18:26):
Me two out there? James, Do you fly out on Saturday?
Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
Saturday?
Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
We might see you at the airport as we're leaving.
Speaker 3 (01:18:32):
No, No, as you are leaving grand Hey, come high
Land your boy, and we won't have a great time.
Speaker 1 (01:18:37):
James were there.
Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
I don't think the Chargers fall into the Rams boat
when you were out there for Rams Colts. Was it
still kind of a home atmosphere like Rams fans or
did you feel like there were some good amount of
Colts fans there.
Speaker 3 (01:18:49):
I feel it was a good amount of Colts fans.
We're probably still leaning towards the majority being the Rams fans.
It's just weird the way there stadium is kind of
set up because I haven't experience many crowds like that
where you don't really show up until the game is
already underwhelming. It might be even more fifty to fifty
ish with you. Yeah, I believe that the Rams are
(01:19:11):
still like the team that's above the Chargers out in
LA when it comes to fandom. So yeah, it's a
unique setting but awesome, you know venue, Like if you
are traveling. I know a lot of Colts fans told me, Hey,
we saw the LA games on the schedule. We want
to get out there and get some warm weather and
catch a game. It is a good place to be
because they that huge jumbo tron they have basically makes
it so you don't have a bad view in the house.
(01:19:33):
But yeah, for the Colts purposes, they're just like, we
don't care where it is we got to go get
a win.
Speaker 2 (01:19:36):
Maybe nine o'clock hour we can play. I thought Jim
Harball had some really pointed words about Jim Mersey and
felt the need on his own to kind of just
bring up his relationship with Jim.
Speaker 3 (01:19:48):
A little emotional there, definitely.
Speaker 2 (01:19:51):
So yeah, Jim Harball was just he was asked kind
of a basic question about the Colts, and you hear
referend Shane Stikeen's time with the Charger. Shane Stikeen spent
nine years with the Chargers. No overlap Harball, of course,
but and then you know, kind of typical hardball fashion,
he can tend to wander a little bit. But yeah,
I thought he shared, yes, some emotional words about Jim Mercy.
(01:20:11):
Maybe we'll play that here coming up in the nine
o'clock hour.
Speaker 1 (01:20:14):
Looking forward to seeing that. Do we have some winners
of tickets to the Butler Notre Dame game tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (01:20:18):
Caleb, We have.
Speaker 5 (01:20:19):
One right on a response from another, but Greg Eken
is one of our winners.
Speaker 1 (01:20:24):
All right, looking forward to that as we try to
hook people up with it's called then exhibition. I thought
it was very interesting to hear kind of some behind
the scenes from coach Mada about what secret scrimmages are like,
where you can coaches can really get into the nitty
gritty of coaching and teaching. Stop the game right there? Hey,
can you run that again? I need to teach my
(01:20:46):
kids how to respond to that and what to do
and that. Being a little disappointed James that we can't
have unlimited thirty second timeouts tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:20:54):
Yeah, when we said that, I was like, Oh, you're
such a coach. But as from reviewing experience, I was thinking,
I'm so glad they'd like vetoed that. No, I don't
want to go to a game we got unlimited thirty
second time outs. If it's anything like my high school
coach was, we would never get to the first quarter,
first half. He stopped to play every single time we
went down the court. So it should be a fun
environment tomorrow night, though.
Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
You're gonna be there, right, Kevin, Yeah, Yeah, really looking
forward to it.
Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
Obviously.
Speaker 2 (01:21:17):
My Notre Dame basketball fandom kind of speaks for it
for itself. And again, Butler is a big year for
them and we're starting to see again Indiana Baylor next weekend.
I think Produce at Kentucky coming up next week. And
this is how the college basketball world has evolved a
little bit. I still think college basketball really struggles to
get into the landscape early in fans' minds, given that
(01:21:40):
it's you know, mid football season. You know, college football
does such a great week a great job, I should say,
of Labor Day weekend. You know, this year we had
what those three top ten matchups you know college basketball
like Thanksgiving weekend, right, you know, we kind of get
into those like Maui, and I know the Bahamas tournaments
kind of lost some of its luster as well. Now
it almost seems those December Saturdays, and yes, IU fans,
(01:22:03):
you could have the Saturday of all Saturdays, IU Louisville.
That's December sixth, that's two o'clock over a Gamebridge Field House.
And if indeed Indiana is in the Big Time Championship,
that would be Saturday night over there at Lucas Oil Stadium.
That would be quite the Saturday for the Cream and Crimson,
and our downtown bars and restaurants would be obsessed with that.
Speaker 1 (01:22:26):
Yeah, and again, you can listen to the Notre Dame
Butler game tomorrow night on our sister station ninety two
point seven Fuego begins at seven o'clock with a tip,
but the airtime is six thirty, so keep an eye
on that later on tonight. Guys. This is interesting NOOW
Thursday night football, Steelers taking on the Bengals, which ordinarily
wouldn't pay a lot of attention to. But all of
a sudden, you know, the Steelers are four and one
(01:22:47):
and they've already had a buy They've got a two
and a half game lead there in the North. And
if the Colts are you know, they've got a big
game of their own against the Chargers here. But we
start looking around other teams that you're going to be
jocking for position with down the stretch. If this keeps
up for the Colts, Like, I don't think the Steelers
are gone away, not in that division, and they you know,
Aaron Rodgers looks like he's mostly Aaron Rodgers. That could
(01:23:10):
be a good football team.
Speaker 3 (01:23:12):
Yeah, I don't think they're running away with the North.
Speaker 2 (01:23:15):
I think you'll who's gonna chase him though? Gravitational pull.
I just think that that division just beats each other up.
And I don't I just don't. I don't trust Rogers
for seventeen weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
Browns are terrible. They're one in five. Baltimore doesn't know
when they're getting their quarterback back. They're one and five
the Bengals if they would lose tonight, if Pittsburgh WINNSDA night,
they got a three and a half game.
Speaker 2 (01:23:36):
Lead, I think basically I'll say that I think the
Colts have a better chance to have staying power than
the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (01:23:42):
That in their division or in the AFC and the AFC. Yeah,
because I might be on team Jeff when it comes
to no, no, no, that AFC.
Speaker 2 (01:23:49):
Like there's only two teams with one loss right now,
the Colts and the Steelers, and they do face off
here in a couple of weeks. But I don't know,
And I'm probably making too much of Rogers against the
Colts last year. I thought he looked so bad in
that game, But how much.
Speaker 1 (01:24:03):
Of those is He's now another year removed from that
major injury too?
Speaker 3 (01:24:07):
That's probably he also was a New York Jet And
I told you yet they're just not good anywhere on Earth?
Speaker 1 (01:24:12):
No, yes, what I mean, you guys are right? What's
that mean for Justin Fields?
Speaker 6 (01:24:16):
Now?
Speaker 1 (01:24:16):
Is he just a bad quarterback or just end up
in a bad situation again or both.
Speaker 3 (01:24:21):
I was going to say, have they won a game.
They've won as many games as me and you, Jeff.
Bad football team, bad quarterback, whatever you want to say.
They're just bad.
Speaker 1 (01:24:28):
They are certainly struggling. So yeah, I think this is
this is the next three four weeks. This is the
middle of the season where you really start to put
yourself in position for what lies ahead in the second
half of the season. And it's great that the Cults
are five and one and I'm excited about it and
it's been fun to watch them rack up points against everybody.
But as we've been talking about, starting this week, the
(01:24:50):
schedule starts to change a little bit, starts to change.
You got the Chargers and then you know, got all
these divisional games coming up towards the end. You so
got to play games against San Francisco and Seattle'm not
in order here, just off the top of my head,
but we talked about the Chiefs and the Steelers. So
it's gonna be go time pretty quickly for this Colt team.
And maybe maybe all these injuries happening right now, maybe
(01:25:11):
they get healthy and ready to go. It's just the
right time for all this stuff too.
Speaker 3 (01:25:16):
We'll see. I think this wide receiver room is going
to look very interesting this weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:25:19):
All right, coming up in a minute, I will leave
you into the capable hands of James Boyd, Kevin Bowen
of course, Caleb just digging in on me today. Appreciate that. Uh,
But I am off for the next hour and tomorrow
as well. I'll be back on Monday. We'll talk about
the Colts then. But you guys got lots to do,
including Scott Agnes talking about the Pacers coming up next.
(01:25:40):
As we continue at ninety three five and one on
seven five the fan, thank you, sir, don't come back
with a limp.
Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Well, the teacher is away here for the final hour
on this Thursday, and I guess for three hours coming
up tomorrow it'll be myself, Kevin Bowen, the dancing James Boyd,
Caleb Zuber on the one into.
Speaker 3 (01:26:00):
Any nobody telling me to stay in my seat no more. Oh,
it's time to make sure to substitute teach you you know,
get the report. Maybe not a good one.
Speaker 2 (01:26:07):
Time to wheel in the TV here here, you've got
an all hell gonna break loose for the next again
hour today, three hours coming up tomorrow. I do want
to get to we'll talk a little Pacers right here,
but they want to get to that Jim Harball clip.
I thought some really candid comments on what Jim Mersey
meant to him. He shared that yesterday and as press conference.
We'll play that upcoming here in a bit. But let's
head of the Payless Slickers hotline. We appreciate his flexibility
(01:26:29):
on this Thursday morning, as the Pacers have one more
preseason game coming up tomorrow night, and I guess, honestly,
Pacer fans probably will have a little bit of watching
tonight's as long as they have a Netflix subscription or
have the right password.
Speaker 3 (01:26:43):
Frankly, when it comes to that.
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
Scott Agnes fromfield House Files joins us, Scott, good morning to.
Speaker 6 (01:26:48):
You, Good morning guys. Nicey to bring in maybe the
gym teacher.
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
I don't know what I would be, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
everybody's favorite right there is definitely the gym teacher. So yeah,
thank you, mister, will out to my gym teacher back
growing up. Scott Agnes with us here. I think one
of your latest is on that Netflix series that will
debut tonight again, the Starting Five. I think We've seen
some snippets of it, Scott. We played the Reggie Miller
(01:27:12):
clip yesterday on the Shows, quite the really I think
emotional scene between Tyrese Haliburn listening to what Reggie Miller
was describing his effort to risk it during that NBA
Finals series. But by all accounts, Scott will get some
great behind the scenes stuff from Tyrese's entire season last year.
Speaker 6 (01:27:33):
Yeah, one hundred percent.
Speaker 12 (01:27:34):
That's actually again when I'm writing today, because there was
so much to it. I talked with the executive producer
that was with Tyrese most of the way for over
twenty minutes, and I think everyone's going to come for
the the emotional of Game seven and seeing and I
think the leave understanding just the highs and lows the
Tyrese experience in this past year, especially this first couple
(01:27:58):
of months of the season, and he was very low
when so much was getting to him, when he was
having to have separate conversation just about like life, and
it was these morning walks and around the neighborhood and
with his dog, and and how big a part his
girlfriend now fiance, Jade played and getting him back to
being himself again off the court so that he could
(01:28:18):
be the tie that we saw push all the way
to Game seven of the finals.
Speaker 3 (01:28:22):
So be honest, mister Agnes, did you stay up all
night watching this? Because the episodes are out now and
I know you are a man of you know, promptness
bringing us the latest. So what episode are you on?
Speaker 12 (01:28:35):
I wish I could say so, James, but no, I am,
I am. I have not yet started it, just seeing
the trailers like everybody else, so I have not gotten
deep into it. I think, like KB maybe started with
this is perfect, perfect kind of appetizer for the upcoming season.
Over the next week.
Speaker 2 (01:28:51):
In Scott Agnes with his harefield House Files, where you
can find his work. Pacers back to practice later today,
off to San Antonio their final preseason game tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:29:00):
Last year they did play.
Speaker 2 (01:29:01):
Season finale, Scott, to leave it pretty open ended, just
your thoughts so far through three preseason games on what
you've liked and what you haven't liked from the Pacers.
Speaker 6 (01:29:10):
Yeah, I'd say to start.
Speaker 12 (01:29:12):
What's been the challenge obviously is health for us to
see some of the guys come back to see what
the full ideas and in terms of roles.
Speaker 6 (01:29:23):
That different players will have.
Speaker 12 (01:29:25):
So that's got to be the number one thing that
they've got to shore up and make do because then
that leads to turnovers. Averaging twenty four turnovers in these games.
That's been a big red flag to me. I mean,
I get you're playing different lineups and maybe you're not
playing key guys even in the second half, but you
need to see that number cut in half.
Speaker 6 (01:29:46):
And so I'm sure that's something they're going to be working.
Speaker 12 (01:29:48):
On, not just this week but over the next several
weeks to get better intact.
Speaker 6 (01:29:53):
And then that the big concern at center is still there.
I mean, one, you.
Speaker 12 (01:29:57):
Have two guys still coming off in Achilles injuries, so
it's asking a lot of them right now to.
Speaker 6 (01:30:02):
Play a full workload.
Speaker 12 (01:30:03):
And then two, none of them really were with this
group last year, so it's integrating them, not even just
reintegrating them into the lineup. And you've got to get
more production. Obviously, I'm sure you guys have hit on it.
The fact that you don't get any field goals last
game from your centers, and foul trouble continue to rear
its ugly had several different preseason games, so that's got
(01:30:26):
to get short up and then probably the positive I
would take aways.
Speaker 6 (01:30:31):
I really like the way they've shot.
Speaker 12 (01:30:32):
The ball from outside, and then I really like what
we saw from the returning three starters, where if they
didn't play Friday, that'd be fined by me because they
had a long season last year and coming right into
it this year.
Speaker 3 (01:30:46):
Scott, when you look at the role that Benedict Matheren
will be in, how unique of a challenge do you
think it'll be for him to play Pacers basketball, move
the ball, make quick decisions. And also, with the absence
of Tyres, he's kind of been thrust more into being
who he is as a scorer. So what's the balancing
(01:31:08):
act there? And how do you think he strikes that
balance to the point that the Pacers want him to?
Speaker 12 (01:31:13):
Yeah, it makes you wonder, is it's not so easy
to put away.
Speaker 6 (01:31:16):
Old habits right?
Speaker 12 (01:31:17):
Like he has always been that best player on the floor,
put the head down just to tack the basket and
be the best player getting to the free throw line.
I mean him and Siakamo battle for free attempts this season.
Speaker 6 (01:31:28):
They're the two best at it on this group.
Speaker 12 (01:31:30):
I would guess there might be some moments I'm wondering
if you have that old good lance bad lance, do
you have good and bad Ben?
Speaker 6 (01:31:38):
Where a couple times maybe it Ben gets going, then
he puts his head.
Speaker 12 (01:31:41):
Down in resorts to those bad habits. But I'm most
intrigued James to see what he can do on the
defensive end.
Speaker 6 (01:31:47):
He's talking about being more of a two way guy.
Speaker 12 (01:31:50):
Obviously, that's a major storyline that has gotten tucked away
in the filing cablet just because there's so many other
more pressing issues right now. But when you're asking Andrew
Nemhard to elevate his usage rate and how he's leading
these offense, I don't think he'll be able to do
what he was able to do defensively, and so that
leans on other guys, especially Matherin, to take on more
(01:32:11):
defensive assignments and with that maybe that will help balance
Ben out. But the other thing, though, is you want
to unleash him to be fair right like the other
night was spectacular in that last preseason game where he
went off and I think finished with thirty one points.
Speaker 6 (01:32:27):
That's what you hope to get many different times throughout
the year.
Speaker 3 (01:32:30):
Scott, I'm glad you brought up defense when it comes
to Matheren because I think it's such a unique way
we look at defense from I guess a fan standpoint,
even myself as a reporter, at times it's like, Okay,
you want to better on defense, just give more effort.
But that's not necessarily the case. So has he spoken
at all about how to get better defensively and what
that looks like during the offseason, because, for example, we
(01:32:52):
say a guy has to be a better shooter. We
all know, okay, get in the gym and take those
shots so you can make them come game time. But
I don't know is a defensive lies Is it watching
more film? Is it knowing where to be on the
help side? What have you talked about on that end
of the floor specifically to get better at Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:33:06):
I think it is more on the ladder. It starts
with knowing your personnel. Kyp is all the players will
make you and if things don't go well, they'll say
it post it man.
Speaker 6 (01:33:14):
We did in Kyp Man like.
Speaker 8 (01:33:16):
You know, So I think it certainly starts there.
Speaker 3 (01:33:18):
They often you.
Speaker 12 (01:33:19):
Want to be on a string of how you you
move in So I think, to me, yes, it's the
it's less.
Speaker 6 (01:33:25):
Energy and more focus.
Speaker 12 (01:33:28):
UH is more the the the intent there, and then
it also is knowing where everyone needs to be. That
so much of it is predicated on mixing things up
or do you switch?
Speaker 6 (01:33:38):
Do you not? Are you blitzing? Are you know?
Speaker 12 (01:33:40):
Are you going above the screen below the screen and
making sure you're doing whatever coaching staff is instructing you to.
I think that's what it comes down to him. I
don't think it's an energy or disinterested or just taking
plays off. I think it's it's more mental than anything,
being locked in on.
Speaker 6 (01:33:57):
Exactly what was preached upon before the game.
Speaker 2 (01:34:00):
Scott, last one for me and I guess while we're
on the Matheren train, I'll throw one more. And the
reason why is yesterday you did see Keegan Murray drafted
two spots ahead a Benedic Matheren sign an extension. I
believe it was five years, one hundred and forty million.
I don't think the Mathern start to his career and
the Murray start to his career are exactly apples to apples,
(01:34:23):
but I don't think they're that far off either. Are
you under the assumption that this year just plays out
and both parties probably view it as a we'll figure
out the extension down the road. I could see, you know,
each side saying, yeah, it's probably the best if we wait.
Speaker 12 (01:34:39):
Yeah, that's been my interpretation all along with all this,
just like it was like they did with Isaiah Jackson
last year for example, with the Pacers. Now, when in
Indiana does do these deals very often it's down to
the final hour or I think in Miles Turner's case,
which an anniversary of like his first four year extension
was yesterday. By the way it was, it was like
(01:35:02):
the final thirty minut him over there.
Speaker 6 (01:35:03):
Surprise if it's the final day.
Speaker 12 (01:35:05):
But that's said, I'm not expecting anything at this point.
Speaker 6 (01:35:09):
I think he has a.
Speaker 12 (01:35:10):
High value on where he's at, what he wants in
the confidence level, and what his game is and what
it's worth. And I think if you're the Pacers, yeah,
you want to sit. This is the year where you
know there's gonna be ample opportunity. Okay, let's see what
he does and if he's able to make the most
of it, and if so, you're happy to reward that.
Speaker 3 (01:35:29):
Absolutely so, Scott, the last one for me, Let you
get out of here. I saw that the Celtics media
played against the Celtics coaching staff and lost fifty seven
to four. So I'm asking you if we lace them up.
I'm not saying we gotta win, but are we getting
the double digits? I have my Halliburton want at the
(01:35:50):
crib right now. I'm ready, so you know, just let
me know he can we get that coordinated? You know,
I'll talk to some people. You talk to some people.
How about it?
Speaker 6 (01:35:59):
Yeah, you talking to people.
Speaker 12 (01:36:03):
I would break out my PG ones if for some
reason I was actually invited to that, and I think
we'd get a good eight.
Speaker 6 (01:36:10):
To twelve points.
Speaker 4 (01:36:11):
I do.
Speaker 6 (01:36:12):
I think this is Indiana.
Speaker 12 (01:36:13):
We got shooters. I'm a happy passer. I'm like Caitlin
out there and trying to pass the ball. And so
I would love to remember we played that the media
game at Hinkle, which was awesome during the NBA Finals,
but it was cool going back. I think KBU were
there during our senior year. I want to say at
IU JD. Campbell and the PR staff invited us there
(01:36:35):
and that was just a fun day. They set us
up in the locker room, gave us some gear, and
gave us an opportunity to see what it was like
while Also, the players saw us in a different environment,
the ones that were always writing and reporting about them.
Speaker 6 (01:36:48):
So it was a fun and unique experience.
Speaker 12 (01:36:50):
But I do think we'd be able to get more
than four points.
Speaker 1 (01:36:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
I never thought I'd be coached by Jim Cruise in
my life, but I was for today back there in
twenty twelve. Again tonight, you've got that Starting five documentary
on Netflix, l debut Tyres Haliburn one of the five
players featured, and then tomorrow night preseason finale in San Antonio,
Scott as always, thank you, sir, all right, thanks guys,
Scott Agnes Fieldhouse Files. I'm picturing like Dustin to Pirac,
(01:37:16):
like cutting back door. You think we'd be able to
get a bucket off that you know.
Speaker 3 (01:37:20):
Oh he's dunking that you fall you know? You know
you see my boy dust and lays them up.
Speaker 1 (01:37:23):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:37:23):
Can we get Jim Boyle and falling asleep on defense?
Speaker 12 (01:37:25):
All?
Speaker 3 (01:37:25):
What I'm saying is I got the Halliburton once in
a way, Johnny Furfy's dunking in those things. I might
have an extra boost in the vertical.
Speaker 2 (01:37:32):
Happy twenty sixth birthday, Speaking of extensions, aaron Ne Smith
sounds like as well.
Speaker 3 (01:37:38):
Absolutely him around.
Speaker 2 (01:37:39):
You know, right down the preseason for those that haven't
watched the four man core of Nemhard Matherin, Nei Smith, Siakam,
you really really like it looked great outside of that center.
Depth Again, is your depth a superpower? I think that
will be a question here as we are one week away,
one week from tonight Pacers and Thunder kicking off the
(01:38:00):
regular season. James E tease this a little bit obviously,
coltson Chargers coming up Sunday four h five. Colts a
slight underdog in this one, and with both head coaches,
you have a lot of connections. Shane Siken got his
NFL start with Norv Turner and the Chargers. Shane spent
nine years with the Chargers, ascending. He was actually the
OC for Justin Herbert's rookie season, and if I remember correctly,
(01:38:24):
I believe that was the initial they started Tyrod Taylor
the freak giving him that shot before a game and
malfunctions the word coming in my head, that's probably not
the right term, but something went wrong and all of
a sudden they needed to start Herbert and the rest
is history. Herbert threw for the most touchdowns I believe
(01:38:44):
of any rookie. Both parties Herbert and Ssiken's spoken very
highly of each other this week. And then of course
Jim Harbaugh's connection probably to our audience, speaks for itself.
A cult here from ninety four to ninety seven. Let's
play this clip, Caleb, this is Jim Harball yesterday, And
just to kind of set it up, he was asked
a very general question about the Colts, the twenty five Colts,
(01:39:06):
and as he made his way through the answer, he
wanted to make sure he gave proper acknowledgment to Jim Mersay.
Speaker 13 (01:39:13):
And that's why I can't talk about the Colts without
talking about mister Ursa passed away earlier this year. But
I mean a guys guy, love for the team, just
people in general, always doing, always, always wanted to affect
(01:39:34):
your day in a positive way. And probably not a
more philanthropic family. Be tough to name one, and the
family has done a great job with the team. But
fond memories, you know, like you get in the weight
room with you and he was strong, he was a powerlifter,
but he also could you know, love the music and
(01:39:55):
play the guitar and just always welcome people, people around,
and it was always it's always doing you know, it's
like now an attitude of just doing anything and everything
for for those that were on his team or his
friends or his family. Really be really bess, really be missed.
Speaker 12 (01:40:18):
He was.
Speaker 13 (01:40:19):
He was one of my one of my favorite people
I've ever been associated with in football.
Speaker 3 (01:40:24):
Good on Jim Harble for that.
Speaker 2 (01:40:26):
Enjoyed listening to him yesterday. Chat about that. Uh and
I think I see I could just listen to Harball.
I feel like he's got one of the more interesting,
I don't know, speech patterns. I was listening to the
postgame locker group a celebration after the game, and it's
I mean he I guess after each win they all
give high fives to each other and he's like literally
(01:40:47):
being like all right, time to high five, and literally
like everyone in the locker rooms high five in each other.
Speaker 3 (01:40:50):
Yeah, he's like a characature.
Speaker 1 (01:40:52):
He literally is.
Speaker 3 (01:40:53):
He's so captain compa.
Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
Maybe he's so entertaining Colt Chargers coming up Saturday or Sunday.
You definitely think that Traveri's ward loss is bigger than
Josh Downs, right, assuming neither play.
Speaker 3 (01:41:06):
Yes, I do think That is a bigger loss because,
as we've seen, that wide receiver room for the Colts
has depth in it. It's a lot of talent, and
I think you can supplement some of the loss of
the wide receiver with Tyler Warren even he could play
the slot, but when you look at cornerback, it's just
not that simple if Ward is not in there. Jonathan
Edwards is the guy again for the second straight week.
(01:41:30):
I did talk to him yesterday. I'll have something on
that and my story upcoming very soon. But he was
very candid about his play and how not so great
it was against the Cardinals.
Speaker 2 (01:41:40):
Yeah, So just to update everybody injury report wise for
the Colts from yesterday again, Javarious Wards still in concussion protocol.
Kenny Moore was limited, so we'll see if three days
of practice it is enough. You know, he has missed
the last three games, so what the achilles injury?
Speaker 3 (01:41:54):
Is that enough?
Speaker 2 (01:41:55):
That would obviously help out big time. But we mentioned
Josh Downs. Sounds like he developed some concussion like symptoms
after the game on Monday and now he is in protocol,
so he missed yesterday. Last year, they really did a
lot of ad Mitchell in the slot when he was out,
and now obviously you have Tyler Warren. To your point, James,
(01:42:17):
I'd be curious if Ashton Doolan's healthy, he did miss
yesterday with the chest injury, if he could get a
little bit of look there. I don't know if they're
ready for Anthony Gould to be the guy if they
really want to go deep in the weeds. They do
have coleman Owen on the practice squad, so we'll see
how that plays out for the Chargers. They still are down.
It looks like they're top three offensive tackles. So you
(01:42:41):
know when you're playing a great head coach, a great
quarterback and a defense that there are some nice elements
to their defense. They are very good stop in the
run though, that to me is what you circle limiting
Justin Herbert and that wide receiver corps. Giving your cornerback
depth looks bad on paper, but how much can you
just get to Herbert and get to him, you know,
(01:43:02):
in a very frequent manner, because your d line should
be absolutely foaming at the mouth.
Speaker 3 (01:43:09):
And what this looks like, Caleb, If these boys don't
feast against this banged up offensive line, we have issues.
I think that's the story.
Speaker 5 (01:43:19):
You guys have laid it out perfectly over the last
couple of days, and I think Kevin, you said it
earlier in the week. You said, if there was any
week to figure it out and get the most investment
out of that offensive line, it has to be this week.
And I understand Herbert's tough to bring down too, and
we saw that in the Miami game. But I think,
especially with you know, your corners kind of banged up,
(01:43:42):
like the pass rush has to be a vital part
of this game.
Speaker 3 (01:43:45):
I think it's a story of the game. Absolutely. I
mean talking to Loot to Lots and lock hom yesterday,
and it is no disrespect to him. Every player reacts
to media differently and it has no bearing on how
they perform, but talking to him about the lack of pressure,
not like a pressure, but lack of success they've had
up front despite having the sixteen sacks and being seventh
(01:44:06):
in the league. Like Kevin said, you gotta watch some
of these games to see how they feel. Do you
feel like you're getting there when it comes to disrupting
the opposing quarterback and that just hasn't been the case.
I mean, you look at Jacobe Brissette over three hundred
yards for the first time in years, almost let his
team on a fourth quarter game winning touchdown drive. He
was nine yards away from us, looking at everybody and saying,
(01:44:29):
what the heck is going on with the defense? And
so to your point, Caleb, I'm definitely going to hit
on that in the story that I have coming as
the athletic because I do think it's not a mirage
what the Colts have done, because being five to one,
you get there however you can. But I do wonder
if it's kind of a mirage with the defense, where
it's like, is this especially when you go up against
(01:44:49):
better talent, because the best quarterback you face this season
was obviously Matthew Stafford took a loss there. Now, granted
you have self ficked the wounds, but then you look
at Justin Herbert. He's another guy looking at upper echelon
where if Jacobe Rissett put four hundred yards on you
as an offense, what is doesn't Herbert gonna do? So
you cannot allow I got to feel comfortable at all.
Speaker 2 (01:45:09):
The only team in the league with three wide outs
over three hundred yards the Chargers. Quinton Johnston, one of
those guys did get back to practice yesterday, so again
that could test your secondary, which means your pass rush
needs to help alleviate some of that stress. All right,
ten minutes from now, Jason Hammer, it's Thursday. That means
he'll talk Thursday Night football. What are we looking at
from a betting standpoint?
Speaker 12 (01:45:30):
Night?
Speaker 2 (01:45:30):
Another one of those divisional games Bengals and Steelers. And
I'm not mistaken, Mike Tomlins A record is weirdly like
very bad on Thursday Night football. So we'll hit that
with Hammer coming up in ten, Let's go ahead and
check it down. All right, let's actually start pacer wise.
We hit a lot of colts right there again their
preseason finale tomorrow. They did play their starters again about
(01:45:51):
twenty five minutes in last year's preseason finale. But James,
I actually want to spend it in a different direction.
Did you see yesterday Malcolm Brogden, retired former pacer who
I thought was going to be, like, maybe an important
bench guy for the Knicks. He decided to hang it
up at.
Speaker 3 (01:46:08):
How old is he? Thirty two ish thirty three ish?
Looking it up right now? He is thirty two, played
at nine seasons in the NBA had a great career
for a second round pick. One Rookie of the Year
was he six Men of the Year with the Boston
Celtics a couple of years ago and had his best
year as far as your stats go with the Pacers.
I believe when I covered him, I think he has
(01:46:29):
like twenty one six and I want to say five
or something like that. So he had a really solid career.
And I'm not surprised though that he is walking away
relatively early, because he always struck me as somebody who
head interest outside of basketball. I know he's very big
when it comes to like social justice and things of
that nature. His family has a history in that world,
and so look forward to whatever his nick chapter is.
Speaker 2 (01:46:49):
This probably says more about me than it does Malcolm Brogen.
I weirdly didn't love watching him play.
Speaker 3 (01:46:55):
He had a herky, jerky, weird game. I don't think
it was the most aesthetically pleasing style of play, but
it was effective in the gatka who so in his shot,
his form was also kind of unique. Great career for
seventy forty ninety guy, I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:47:08):
For second round pick you are spot on with that.
Speaking of basketball, exhibition slates underway. The Darren Devreese era
coming up tomorrow. That is IU and Marion Butler and
Notre Dame again. That'll be over on ninety two point
seven for US. Some lot of connections there for Notre
Dame coming back to Butler with Michael Shrewsbury and Brad
Stevenson and Brady Stevens So at seven o'clock up there
(01:47:30):
at Hinkle tomorrow, a last night Major League Baseball. So
far here in the Championship Series, it has been all
road teams. The Blue Jays all over the Mariners last
night thirteen to four. We now will get both series
starting back up again tonight, so we'll have two games.
(01:47:51):
Dodgers Brewers will be the first one. Blue Jays and
Mariners to follow. That is Max Scherzer and Luis Castillo
in that game four. But again, so far all team
have won. We'll see if that can team in LA
for that one. James Boyd, are you gonna venture to
a La Dodgers game while you're out there?
Speaker 3 (01:48:08):
No, I've heard that it's actually kind of a logistical
nightmare to get anywhere when it comes to LA sports.
So I'm like, I'll just deal with that when I
have to get paid to go to the game. Speaking
of events tonight, how about the Moe on Spike match
over a gamebridge Field how sports court putting this on?
Speaker 2 (01:48:23):
That's I you and Purdue Big ten volleyball. For those
that are unfamiliar, is like, whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:48:28):
Say spike match? I'm like, are we getting pitch forks out?
Speaker 11 (01:48:31):
Like?
Speaker 3 (01:48:31):
What's going on here? Are these gladiators? Well, I don't
know the intensity level of Indiana, Purdue could be at
that mark.
Speaker 1 (01:48:36):
Now, this is volleyball.
Speaker 2 (01:48:37):
A Purdue's program has had great, great history, especially here
recently Indiana one of their best seasons in quite some time.
So two I believe two ranked opponents here coming up
tonight over at gamebridge Field House. So that should be
a good crowd over there. The only other thing I
was gonna mention again, that's starting five from Netflix. Tyres
(01:48:58):
Haliburn one of the five players that will debut on
Netflix today. It's eight episodes. I believe around forty five
minutes each for those episodes. So you can watch that
and of course college football this weekend if you are
a local watcher of Purdue, Indiana Notre Dame, it's in
that order if you would like on Western at noon.
(01:49:21):
Vegas actually weirdly likes for doing this one. They're only
a three and a half point underdog, and that is
after Northwestern beat Penn State last week.
Speaker 3 (01:49:29):
IU is on Peacock. This is homecoming Michigan State.
Speaker 2 (01:49:32):
I guess as a slew of issues with their head
coach and their quarterback situation right now. Indiana is a
nearly a four touchdown favorite and elimination game in South
Bend for Notre Dame. They have positioned themselves nicely after
the zero to two start, but this is the one
they have to have. It is the USC Trojans making
the trek to South Bend, Notre Dame just north of
(01:49:54):
a touchdown favorite in quite a big one there Where
is game day? Do we gotta be some sec Georgia
Old Miss that's sound right?
Speaker 3 (01:50:03):
I think I think that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:50:04):
I think they're in Athens.
Speaker 2 (01:50:05):
Let me look up here the top twenty five matchups here,
LSU Vandy. That boy, Vandy's rank seventeenth. Tennessee Bama.
Speaker 3 (01:50:15):
Honestly, that does look TI zone because again, Vanderbilt was
horrible a few years ago, and I you obviously was
not top three in the country. So let's just talk
about those fortunes changing down in Bloomington. I mean, Vanderbilt
has to be feeling. If you're a student or along,
you gotta feeling great.
Speaker 2 (01:50:30):
Old miss at Georgia. That's where you're thinking.
Speaker 5 (01:50:31):
Calem I just looked at looked it up and confirmed
and as.
Speaker 1 (01:50:34):
That's where they're at.
Speaker 2 (01:50:35):
Oh, kind of sneaky one tomorrow Louisville Miami move off
to a four and one start, So get a little
Friday night football with that one.
Speaker 1 (01:50:41):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:50:42):
On the other side, let's se where we're at tonight
from a betting standpoint.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
Jason Hammer gonna join us. It is Steelers, it is Bengals.
We'll talk Thursday night football and the other lines for
the weekend. Here up coming Kevin Ball with James Boyd
here ninety three five when I was seven five the fan.
All right, it is third today it is nine to thirty.
That means we try and make some moolah. The Great
(01:51:05):
Jason Hammer with us here over from WIBC. Degenerates next
Door where you can find it gambling advice.
Speaker 3 (01:51:13):
You think of kids next Door, the show that I
watched growing up, Degenerous next Door sounds like the X
rated version.
Speaker 2 (01:51:21):
It's what your parents wouldn't let you watch, is what
that is? No AI jeff Rickord. I was really hoping
we get some AI jeff Rickord today.
Speaker 11 (01:51:28):
I was just talking about this during the break here
with Ricord being gone and Mark being gone.
Speaker 1 (01:51:34):
I like to roast people right to their face. So
we're gonna wait till everybody gets a Jason. I already
got that, is what you're saying.
Speaker 11 (01:51:39):
Yes, you've already got the full experience. And let's be honest,
last two weeks of the AI stuff have it worked.
So let's just keep it straight up this week, man,
and see if we can get these old dudes to
make us some money tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:51:52):
Okay, so Thursday night tonight, we once again are intra
division and Mike Tomlin and the Steelers are a four
half point favorite at Cincinnati. Joe Flacco, of course, getting
his second start for the Bengals, and weirdly, Mike Tomlin
on the road on Thursday night. Football hammer has not
been good, so I am very torn. I guess I
(01:52:14):
initially saw four and a half and I thought that
seems like a small line, But then you think about
what road or what divisional games have been on Thursday Night.
Speaker 11 (01:52:20):
Football this year, and the underdogs look pretty good. Right,
So here's my situation with tonight. You're right, Tomlin's record
on Thursday stinks. But you know what else stinks the
Cincinnati defense. So I'm trying to figure out another way
to beat the book tonight. So let's look at this total.
The over under sitting at forty four. That's the number
that I see eight of the bengals last nine home games.
Speaker 1 (01:52:43):
Over the total.
Speaker 11 (01:52:44):
And last week, if you watched any of that Cincinnati
in Green Bay game, it seems like old man Flacco
finally got Jamar Chase. The football got him in the
mix a little bits think had like over ninety yards receiving,
got him in the end zone. Meanwhile, the Bengals defense
second and sack rate. They allow seven point nine yards
per pass, which is good for twenty eighth in the league.
(01:53:06):
In the red zone, they're awful. I think they're allowing
a touchdown seventy one point four to three percent of
the time. That's good for thirtieth in the NFL. Long story, short, man,
I don't see a lot of defense being played out
here tonight. If you can get around twenty from Cincinnati tonight.
(01:53:27):
I think you can get an over and that's what
we're looking at. You can also get Cincinnati's team total
over nineteen and a half, but I'm going full game,
full total over forty four tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:53:39):
I always love rooting for points on Thursday Night before
we transition to anything else, any props, any individual player, props,
anything else that you want to sprinkle tonight.
Speaker 11 (01:53:48):
So let's go with Joe Flacco over thirty six and
a half attempts. This is going to be the old
man at the bachelor party theory.
Speaker 1 (01:53:57):
Now follow me on this.
Speaker 3 (01:53:58):
Okay, when you're at a bad right, I love the
start to this.
Speaker 11 (01:54:02):
When you're at a bachelor party and you're with your
buddies and it's your you know, frat bros and maybe
people you went to high school with. Okay, fine, they're
ready to have a good time.
Speaker 1 (01:54:11):
But the person that's getting loose the.
Speaker 11 (01:54:12):
Most is the old guy there because that's his night out,
like the dad, the father in law, he's.
Speaker 3 (01:54:19):
Wearing the wedding ring or did he take the wedding
ring off? Right?
Speaker 11 (01:54:22):
They're the ones buying the shots, buying the dances. This
is their night out. And this brings us to Joe
Flacco tonight. Aaron Rodgers is old, but he gets on
TV all the time. Flacco probably didn't think what he'd
be in the league this year and two, starting on
national television. So this is the old man at the
bachelor party theory tonight. He's gonna sling it around the
yard thirty six and a half attempts. What are the
(01:54:44):
Bengals gonna do run the football tonight, No, they're gonna
throw it if they have any chance at all to
perform at home on TV. The old Man's gonna check
down and throw that thing around the yard. So we're
going to Flacco over thirty six and a half. And
on the other side, just because we always liked have
something to watch when it's on screen with the Steelers
DK Metcalf, we're going to go over his total tonight.
(01:55:08):
I'm seeing sixty six and a half in spots here
over at sixty six and a half. Again, Bengals defense
thinks twenty ninth and drop back success. Aaron Rodgers is
gonna have time, and they're dealing with some injuries. I
think Austin's still out and banged up for them. So
if it's not going to be a running back or
multiple tight ends catching the ball. Where's it gonna go.
(01:55:28):
I think it's gonna go to DK Metcalf and we're
gonna go over that total as well.
Speaker 3 (01:55:32):
The old being gay game, we should call this with
these two relics of quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (01:55:37):
Hey, and maybe this is gonna be good. Like when
you guys were younger.
Speaker 11 (01:55:40):
I don't know how much ball you guys played in
the park these days, but when I was growing up,
we used to play ball at the park in Beach Grove,
right and courts be a run all day and you
could have a group of young cats that were pretty good.
But you get a group of motivated old dudes out there,
you're not getting.
Speaker 1 (01:55:55):
No, they're not getting the old dudes off the court.
Speaker 3 (01:55:58):
They're back dorn Y, Yeah, exactly, they're running motion off
this is you just hit another fifteen footer from the baseline. Now,
I had a guy my dad used to play with.
He's taking me out there. When I was a kid
growing up, play with him and his his buddy used
to get tougher, I guess. And this dude, we call
him old school. He always get the ball with the
(01:56:19):
post and every get a guy like his hip, he'd
be like, this is the metal lock, right, here's the
metal lock. And you were in jail and he was
throwing that hook shot and you were dead anyway, he
had a shirt off. It was real sweating. Nobody wanted
to play d hair on the back.
Speaker 2 (01:56:36):
Okay, what else this weekend? If you would like to
dabble anything collegiately, let us know. Colts Chargers is one
of the smallest spreads of the weekend. The Colts are
a one and a half point underdog. That line has
stayed pretty consistent throughout the week. So what else tickles
you hear?
Speaker 11 (01:56:52):
Hammer first thing that jumped out to me in that
Colts game was Daniel Jones rushing yards over under sixteen
and a half. Uh, Like, the Chargers have a pretty
good chance of winning this game. I hate saying that
because I think the Colts are just as good and
I'm not in love with Justin Herbert the way a
lot of people are. But I think Daniel Jones, You're
just a couple broken plays away from getting this total.
(01:57:14):
This seems low for Danny dimes over sixteen and a
half rushing yards And because I'm just a ridiculous, Homer.
It's a big weekend in our house. The third Saturday
in October. Tennessee and Bama. I went to the Tennessee
game there a year ago. This week it's in Tusca Loosa.
Speaker 1 (01:57:32):
Look at it.
Speaker 11 (01:57:32):
The over in that one too last year was like
the exception to the rules. Just a gross ugly game.
But Nico didn't play really well at all for Tennessee
when he was there. Tennessee in nine of the last
ten they've gone over, and historically these teams put up
some big points against each other. Go back to that
shootout a couple of years ago Hindon Hooker against Bama squad.
(01:57:55):
That total was cashed I think at halftime. So we're
gonna ride the lightning here over fifty eight and a
half with Tennessee and.
Speaker 1 (01:58:02):
Bama degenerates next door.
Speaker 2 (01:58:04):
Or two podcasts each week, one NFL on College Football,
Jason Hammer, Rob Kendall, you can find them there and
of course over on WIBC, Hammer and Nigel and you
just got back from oh Man.
Speaker 11 (01:58:16):
It was a Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park.
We stayed in Jackson, Wyoming. It's a little area they
called Jackson Hole.
Speaker 1 (01:58:26):
Right there.
Speaker 11 (01:58:26):
That's the name of the airport you fly into. I
had never been to that part of the country in
my entire life. Usually if I'm going west, I'm going
to Vegas or something. But man, this was beautiful. Like
I got in touch with my inner Beech Grove hillbilly
out there. Man, everywhere you look there's like a scenic
mountain view. I mean, the pictures that I posted on
social media don't do this place justice. Everything looks like
(01:58:48):
a portrait and I would go back.
Speaker 1 (01:58:51):
I mean, it's got a.
Speaker 11 (01:58:52):
Cool little vibe, like their strip in Jackson Hole. It's
a mix of like Nashville, where you've got like bars
and live music, but there's also some Nashville, Indiana where
you can go across the street and buy apple butter,
you know, like it's one of those types of deals.
Speaker 1 (01:59:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:59:09):
So no, man, if you just need to decompress a
little bit, and if you're somebody that likes the big
city and those types of vacations, which I normally am. Uh,
this was a fun change of pace, man, I dug it.
Speaker 2 (01:59:20):
I think the youngest Ersay daughter got married out there,
if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 11 (01:59:25):
Dude, there are some big time houses. Harrison Ford's got
a big ranch out there? Who else does? Sandra Bullock
has a big ranch, Nicky six of Motley Crue, And
I believe Kanye West has a residents.
Speaker 1 (01:59:37):
Somewhere out there.
Speaker 11 (01:59:38):
And uh, from that one, we did not make it
to Cassa de Kanye out there.
Speaker 2 (01:59:45):
If he's got winners behind that door, that's all we're
looking for tonight, and we'll knock on the door.
Speaker 3 (01:59:50):
We do have a question about one of the bets
you through out there, And listener, Aaron through the text
line is saying, do sackyards go against your rush total?
Is you talking Aboutdaniel Jones when it comes to his
rush yards on Sunday?
Speaker 1 (02:00:02):
No, but Neil downs do. So if you've got like.
Speaker 3 (02:00:07):
On playing with fire there, you know, you know Sam
Sticking will love him a little Neil down.
Speaker 2 (02:00:10):
There, and there's been some bad beats before them. Yeah, absolutely,
which is different than college. We should point out, Aaron,
in college, correct if I'm wrong. Hammer sackyards I believe
do count against your rushing total in the NFL, though
they do not.
Speaker 11 (02:00:23):
Correct, So Daniel Jones gets sacked, that doesn't go against
his rushing total. But if the Colts win this thing
and they're milking the clock. That minus two minus two
minus two catches up to you at the very end
and bites you.
Speaker 2 (02:00:33):
That's the definition of a bad beat. Okay, Hammer's got
this tonight. He loves the over, so we're cheering for
points tonight, Steelers Bengals. That's right around forty four. The
Old Man at the Bachelor Party special. It's one of
my favorite analogies. You've given us thirty six and a
half pass attempts for Joe Flacco and DK Metcalf, who's
had some big plays with Aaron Rodgers this year. Over
(02:00:53):
on those receiving yards sixty six and a half, and you,
if you would like to sprinkle a little Colt's action.
He's given you the Dan Jones rushing yards Daniel Jones
last week, James Boyd, he had well, he had a
touchdown run, of course, but he had that big scramble
doing nite one of those scoring drives there late.
Speaker 3 (02:01:09):
Yeah, I believe he ran for seventeen yards on the
second to last drive to kind of set up those
last two scoring drives. So Hammer, thank you as always,
Jason Hammer. Afternoons, you hear I'm on WIBC starting at
three o'clock and again degenerates next door.
Speaker 1 (02:01:23):
Thank you, gentlemen, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (02:01:25):
The great Jason Hammer right there, and we'll get you
set one final time here. It is actually a busy
Thursday in sports, busy weekend, so we'll close it out
here with myself, Kevin Bowen and James Boyd. Well, you
just heard that promo right there for the indy eleven.
Speaker 3 (02:01:40):
How about a four pack.
Speaker 2 (02:01:42):
We'll do two of those VR TECHT line three one
seven two three nine ten seventy. How about the word eleven.
I don't care if you numerical it out. I don't
care if you spell it out. I don't care if
you send a picture of stranger things eleven. Uh in
the text line there three one two nine ten seventy.
Saturday Night, Andy eleven Louden is allowed in the city.
Speaker 3 (02:02:04):
Is that right, Caleb?
Speaker 1 (02:02:05):
I believe so.
Speaker 5 (02:02:06):
I had to look up the pronunciation yesterday just to
be sure. So I think that's what they have.
Speaker 3 (02:02:11):
Well, there you go. I'll take your word for it.
Speaker 1 (02:02:12):
There.
Speaker 2 (02:02:13):
Two four packs will give away text line three one
seven two three nine ten seventy. James, I guess uh,
combo coming up in a few hours with Brett Rippin
right over at the Colts facility since he wasn't in
the building yesterday.
Speaker 3 (02:02:26):
Yeah, I'm gonna tell him, how are you low managing?
You just joined the team? You should have been here, Yes,
I should have doin some repscen Hey.
Speaker 2 (02:02:31):
TSA, he's no joke. I don't think they were sending
the old private bird for old Brett Rippin. I think
he might have been traveling old commercially.
Speaker 3 (02:02:39):
That might be a dream to be a professional athlete.
No way to recognizes it has to be pretty cool.
But yeah, we'll catch up with Brett Rippon later today.
Is uncle Mark was the backup for Colt's legend Payon
Manning back of two thousand and one, and his uncle
was also a Super Bowl MVP. So a lot of
football in that family. But for our purposes, we want
to know how he's gonna get integrated with the Colts.
(02:03:00):
In was briefly teammates with Daniel Jones last year in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (02:03:04):
Yeah, third different offense for Brett Rippon at about a
month and a half. Was with Minnesota this offseason and
then was with Cincinnati at the start this year. He
was actually the backup for Jake Browning for a couple
of games there once Joe Burrow got hurt, and then
when they traded for Joe Flacco a week ago Tuesday,
that's when they cut ripping. So just to refresh everybody
(02:03:24):
on the Colts plane at quarterback this week, behind Daniel Jones,
it'll be Riley Leonard. He will be the backup one
play away, and then the assumption is Brett Rippen will
be the emergency third quarterback. And again that third quarterback
has got to have injuries to the first and second
guy in order.
Speaker 3 (02:03:40):
To get in the game.
Speaker 2 (02:03:41):
And you know, I was listening to Shane Stike and
yesterday it was kind of funny. The only real Colts
connection it appeared to Brett Rippen was you mentioned Daniel
Jones two months together in Minnesota. Shane's like, oh yeah,
my little brother was the ball boy of Boise State
when Brett Rippon was in college.
Speaker 3 (02:03:56):
There's really no Colts overlapping.
Speaker 2 (02:03:57):
Doesn't sound if they had worked him out even in
the offseason.
Speaker 3 (02:04:00):
No, from what I understand, and this is a joke,
I would think that it went something like this, we
brought in four quarterbacks, eh, not really feeling those guys. Hey, Daniel,
who was that guy you played with last year? You
said it was kind of okay, Yeah, we'll bring him in.
All right, sounds good. That's what happened.
Speaker 2 (02:04:16):
Daniel Jones has gotten to the position. He's been so
good that now they listened to him for personnel moves.
Speaker 3 (02:04:21):
I mean, have you seen the guy play football this year?
I listened to a lot of That's when you know
you've made it as a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:04:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:04:26):
I did think it was interesting though. You asked him
about being in the MVP conversation, and I was surprised
to find out and really watch this unfold. Daniel Jones
immediately started jumping up and down. He was like, yes, yes,
it's exactly what I dreamed of. I wanted to be
in NVB conversations. I want to be asked about it
(02:04:47):
by Kevin Bowen. But in reality that was not the case.
Speaker 2 (02:04:51):
Yeah, I know asking that, I really don't even know
why I asked it. It was one of those Yeah, I
feel like I haven't asked Daniel Jones a question here
in a few weeks, so might as well. And that
was a very Dangel Jones type answer.
Speaker 3 (02:05:01):
Someone said they.
Speaker 2 (02:05:01):
Spotted him in a Fat Dance which is near our
house earlier this this week.
Speaker 3 (02:05:06):
I'm a big Fat Dance fan. Have you ever been
to the one?
Speaker 6 (02:05:08):
I have not.
Speaker 2 (02:05:09):
I think there's one right off Mass Half if I'm
not saying, I believe one open Carmel as well.
Speaker 6 (02:05:14):
Great food.
Speaker 3 (02:05:15):
I could totally see Daniel Jones was walking into a
Delhi and chilling with the people.
Speaker 2 (02:05:19):
Yeah, I mean it's more Yeah, I mean, yeah, Delhi
is you know, one way to put it, think more
like Chicago dog style little again, kind of greasy food.
Speaker 3 (02:05:27):
Yeah, night, nice little sports bar atmosphere fair enough in there.
Is he going to be somebody that would actually eat bad? Anyways,
at the point of the.
Speaker 2 (02:05:33):
I know I was a little I'm trying to think of,
like what Dan, it was on a I think it
was on a Monday. So you know, you probably allow
yourself a little cheat day earlier in the week before
you get back into your routine. Routine for the Colts
will be again their second practice of the week today.
Javariusward and Josh Downs both in concussion protocol, so those
will be the two definite names to keep an eye
(02:05:55):
on here as the Colts get back to practice Thursday. Night,
will you boys Thursday night football it up? Or will
you give the old Starting five Netflix documentary Tyres halliburn
a visit.
Speaker 3 (02:06:07):
So usually by Thursday after noon, I'm done writing for
the week, So that means I'll probably watch Starting five
until the Thursday night game comes on, and then if
I look a little sleepy eyed tomorrow, it's probably because
I'll burn through the whole thing. I hate spoilers.
Speaker 5 (02:06:23):
I gotta say, man, like this, this Thursday night matchup,
it just nothing does nothing for me.
Speaker 3 (02:06:31):
Oh really, I think it does something for me, at
least entertaining. I say that every week, Caleb, and then
I watch it because I'm gonnagit.
Speaker 5 (02:06:39):
That's the thing, is all end up tuning in and
it's what it's how the NFL is, what is what
it is, because it'll it'll all get us eventually.
Speaker 3 (02:06:47):
Yeah, and I'm still going to myself about that. I
say every week, I'm not watching that game and it's on.
Speaker 2 (02:06:52):
Yeah, I mean, Giants Eagles last week turned out to
be a game no one really saw coming in terms
of the result on that and the Cults do play
the Steelers here upcoming in a few weeks, so you know,
It's always nice when you know there's a game slotted
away from the Colts, I can watch a Colt's opponent,
So yeah, I'll probably dabble in a little bit of both.
Shout out to everybody going out to Gamebridge Field House again,
that moan on Spike match tonight that is Bringis and
(02:07:15):
you volleyball. Save those for the parking lot purdueing IU.
Speaker 1 (02:07:19):
In that one.
Speaker 2 (02:07:20):
That is a top twenty five matchup. And again the
Pacers pre season of finale coming up tomorrow in San Antonio.
We'll see how much their starters play. Pacers back to
practice today. It'll be US three once again tomorrow. That
was myself, Kevin bow and James Boyd, Caleb Zuper. Thank
you to Ralph Russ if you missed that earlier national
(02:07:40):
college football writer for the Athletic. I thought he had
some interesting comments. I don't know if I You fans
would love to hear that he has them slotted fifth
in the nation right now.
Speaker 3 (02:07:51):
But that's his vote, not mine. That it's not a
pairing with the Athletic. No, no, no, to be very
clear that it's his vote right now.
Speaker 2 (02:07:57):
I think you can make a case for Indiana by
and frankly higher than that and maybe even one or two,
although I did see Alabama's beating three straight ranked opponents,
so those SEC resumes are getting a little bit of
a boost. Tomorrow will be a football Friday and we
start to shift into basketball season as well, so a
ton to get to for US three coming up tomorrow
on the show, Jake's Got You New Into three John
(02:08:18):
three to six.
Speaker 3 (02:08:19):
Everybody, have a great, great Thursday.
Speaker 2 (02:08:21):
Thank you for listening to the Fan ninety three five
on a seven five Fan
