Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, good morning everyone, Welcome into the Fan Morning Show
KBJB and Jeff or Is I like to say George Clooney,
Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington because we got Alex Smith as
the quarterback for the Indianapolis Cults, So let's let's all
just upgrade ourselves a little bit today.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
What do you say, Well, I mean, I think I'm
Denzel Washington by default, so I'll take him. You can
figure out who's George Clooney and who's Brad Pitt.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Obviously Brad Pitts that are looking one. So that's KB.
But that was quite the press conference yesterday for Chris
Mallard talking about quarterbacks and what the plan is going
to be, and I thought both of you wrote about
it and the fact that we still don't really truly
know what the long term plan for Anthony Richardson is
at the end of this day, right.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Just believe believe Kevin, like you believe in your fighting
Irish comes Sunday night.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Believe like the compliment for Alex Smith, if he was
to be listening at seven to one in the morning,
you probably take a little Let's let's get into that.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Of the show, right, But see, I thought. I thought, Now,
to me, Denzel Washington is the best actor of the three,
and so I was thinking, like top shelf guys, but
not quite the league MVPs when it comes to like
acting and stuff like that. Well, I mean, if I
were compared to Washington, No, that's why I said, you
got the best end of the deal, because he's as
good as a game.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I'm about to say, yeah, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
You would rather be Michael B. Jordan.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I mean, hey, he ain't living a bad life now.
NFL quarterbacks to those actors that would be Lamar Josh
and Patrick. Alex Smith would fall into that. But you
see the point, right, I do see the point.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Daniel Jones, who's not had a winning record since twenty
twenty two, is being compared to a guy who, in
the glory years of his career, took his teams deep
into the playoffs each and every year.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Well, I think deep might be a stretch. I want
to say, he might have won two playoff games in
his career, Alex Smith.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
But he won consistently and he always had his team around.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, he got into the playoffs, I'll give him that.
But yeah, I think part of the reason why they
moved on is because they couldn't win the bigger games,
and when they switched to Colin kaeper they went to
Super Bowl. But anyways, I do kind of agree with
your assessment there, Jeff, that it was a bit of
a bit of a surprising comparison, which you can get
into throughout the show for sure, because I have thoughts
on this for why I get the comparison, why I
(02:14):
do not get the comparison.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Uh, Kevin, what was your thought when you walked away
from that press conference yesterday with Chris Ballard?
Speaker 3 (02:19):
Yeah, I didn't think anything out of the ordinary from Ballard.
I know a lot of people were reaching out to
me like, oh my gosh, he's beyond defensive, and I
don't think they feel that way. Snarky as can be,
and blah blah blah. I'm like, is this the first
time you guys have consumed a Chris ballad press conference,
particularly one in the last few years. I mean, this
is largely how it goes. Colleague of VARs said right
(02:39):
before the start of the press conference, you know, this
is usually when Ballard is maybe his snippiest, if you will,
And I get that, you're what ten days away from
the start of the regular season. I understand that, you know,
probably the edge is a little bit more prevalent than
it is maybe in the off season or around draft time,
et cetera, et cetera. So you know, I honestly go
(03:03):
back to the combine and when I walked away from
our interview with him at that table and heard his
answer on why he felt like he was getting a
nine year and heard his answer on what he felt
like his greatest accomplishment was, I just thought to myself, Damn,
there are no words he can utter that is going
(03:26):
to make anybody feel warm and fuzzy, that's going to
look I don't even know what, like, Okay, hey, what's
your plan with Anthony richardson moving forward? I don't know
what answer he could have said yesterday that all of
a sudden would have had the fan base doing jumping jazz.
It would we're starting him? Actually yeah, like yeah, I
guess those would be the only words. But it's just
(03:48):
a man with a very hollow resume right now, and
it's an indictment on the resume when you hear his words.
But I don't know, I just walked in there with
non grand expectations and walked out of there with non
grand expectations. Like I don't even know how many times
I brought it up on the show yesterday that Ballet
was talking because I didn't have this like overwhelming conviction like,
(04:11):
oh man, he's gonna say something that's gonna be so convincing.
And usually I enjoy hearing Chris Bauer talk. I actually
think he's one of the more candid gms. But I
don't know. I just think it's a sad state and
sad reality state of where the franchise is at right now.
And those are just kind of my overall thoughts.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, I kind of feel like and we have talked
about this before, but I want to get both of
your comments on this. My fear for the Colts long
term is that Daniel Jones comes in and does a
pretty good job, and because of the talent around him,
they do okay, and maybe they get to a wild
(04:50):
card game, maybe they lose that wild card game, maybe
they win that wild card game. But now do you're
staring in the face of, Okay, what do we do now?
With Dan Jones? Long term? He was pretty good, he
was Okay, what do you do now? Do you give
him another short term to you with some incentives, is
that completely the end for Anthony Richardson? Like what what
(05:14):
do you do? Everybody keeps saying to me in my comments,
they should trade Anthony Richardson for what at this point
in time to who? Like where are they at quarterback? Overall?
Right now? If Daniel Jones comes out and he's okay,
pretty good, then what?
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Yeah? I mean, that's obviously the big picture question here
in twenty twenty five. I don't do you slap the
franchise tag on on my I don't know what you do.
But I thought, honestly, everything Ballard said yesterday could succinctly
be described and the quote of they believe if you win,
if you don't, they don't. I mean that to me
was the money quote. That was a very succinct way
(05:51):
to sum up where he's at right now. Again, no
words he was going to say yesterday is going to
have this fan base rejoicing, like you are going to
have to win, and even if you do win, there
will still remain some skeptics saying, whatever blip on the
radar one year, it's you know, Daniel Jones did this
in twenty twenty two with the Giants, etc.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Etc.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
But right now on his resume, there's just nothing that
stirs up a ton of belief. And so a week
from Sunday he gets another opportunity to try and create
a different narrative around his tenures so far, because the
resume just offers nothing of substance with it.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
So I'll ask you even more directly, James, what's the
long term future at quarterback for the Indianapolis Cults. Are
they any closer now than they were a year ago
or two years ago or three years ago.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
No, I would say they're probably up further away because
you once again are going out there with a veteran
on a one year contract, and you don't know if
number five, you're a number four pick from two years ago,
can play at a high level in the NFL, can
even start or be a starter in the NFL. So
they're further away than they were I think a few
(07:04):
years ago.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Yeah, And just to also look verbally and semantically, I
understand they're in a tough spot right You're trying to
pump up and support the guy that you've picked as
your starting quarterback, and you don't want to diminish Anthony
Richardson at the same time. But sometimes the actions speak
louder than words, because we all know that if Daniel
(07:26):
Jones is pretty good, as I've been saying, does that
put Anthony Richardson even further behind because he's not getting
any better. Just sitting there taking practice squad reps is
going up against the number one d of the Colts
all the time and never really worry about working on
your particular offense. It's always running somebody else's team as
a scout team and getting very limited reps in the back.
(07:48):
I don't understand how any of this contributes to the
development of a guy who needs to go out and
play football, because that's the one thing he hasn't done,
is play enough football at this point in time.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
James, Yeah, I got a kick out of this tweet
from Jake Query yesterday on Korean Company on our Airways
from twelve to three, and he said Ballart credits Richardson
saying he's quote come miles, which means miles ago, they
handed the keys to a guy who miles later can't
win the job.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
And I was thinking, well, that's one way to put
it. It might be mean to put it in a nessa
Carlton Lear It might be miles like.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Knowing Jake Query there, but I thought that was a
very simple way to kind of put it. Where you're saying,
even all this progress, but how much further does he
have to go? And that is the question we can't
get a clear answer on.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
It's it's going to be crazy. But here they are.
And the hope is that they have built a running
game around Jonathan Taylor, that offensive line, that they have
a really solid group of receivers high, you know, better
than average as a group I would say in the
National Football League. They're hoping that they've really improved the
defense that gave up a ton of yards last year
and gave up points and bunches and key stretches down
(09:05):
and near the end of the season. They're hoping all
of that stuff is good enough to be piloted by
a guy who just won't make a ton of mistakes.
And Kevin I think this group would be thrilled with
fifteen passing touchdowns and five interceptions and five or six
rushing touchdowns too, like he had in his Banner year
back in twenty twenty two. That's where the culture at
they'd be thrilled with that year, would they not?
Speaker 3 (09:28):
I love this song, thank you, Mark Bacon for this
thank you.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
But that's Carlton's never for that cam that reminds the
White Chicks.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
By the way, Mark, I can never think of that
song without thinking of that movie.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Yeah, that's probably they would probably sign up with. I
don't know, maybe a little bit more than fIF you know,
if we're going touchdown interception. That's the best he's ever been,
Carson Wentz is what twenty seven and seven the infamous
ratio there from the twenty twenty one season. Yeah, this
is the reality where the culture at right now. You know,
I think you talk to people that you know are
just general observation at Grand Park, a lot of people
(10:00):
feel like that's the worst attendance that's been in seven years.
Up in Westfield, preseason schedule just got over chatter about
being the worst TV ratings we've seen in over a decade.
It's the reality of where you're at with a franchise.
And I just thought, largely we can psycho analyze Ballard,
you know, to the grave, but to me that just
(10:23):
largely sounded like how he has been and as the
years have built along the resume doesn't allow for anything
of substance, and the words then just sound hollow. And
you know, it was interesting. I actually listened to the
Miami GM Chris career speak yesterday at before Ballard, you know,
knowing the culture playing the Dolphins a week one. He
(10:44):
has a very similar resume to Ballard, one year longer
a little bit, I think a one more playoff appearance,
but it had a similar tone. So I think it's
I don't know if you can label the week one
game of the organizations that are accepting mediocre right now,
facing off at one o'clock Sunday inside of Lucashall Stadium.
Welcome to CBS.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
That's where we're at right now. All right, we got
a lot to do today. We'll tell you all about it.
Coming up in just a minute. It's Thursday. The Colts
have there now second fifty three man roster. We'll get
into that and talk about a new linebacker that joined
the team yesterday. It's all coming your way next. It's
ninety three five and one oh seven five.
Speaker 4 (11:20):
The fans, the morning checkdout on ninety three five and
one oh seven five the fan.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
Good morning, and welcome into a Thursday is. The Indianapolis
Colts now are just nine days away from their season
opening game against the Miami Dolphins, and yesterday Chris Ballard
met with the media for a while, talking mostly as
you guys had predicted about the quarterback situation. Your number
one takeaway yesterday Kevin Bowen.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Colin Kaepernick got a name drop. Wow, that was a
few years ago. Then all of a sudden that might
be leading off Sports Center. I don't know. I wish
I had something grand for you. I just think through
out of the situation is it's a man with a
little substance to you know, stand on if you will,
and until results change on the field, the wards are hollow.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
We've been talking about that. We'll be talking about it
and getting your reactions all day long and the fan
text line two three, nine, ten seventy. Also yesterday, practice
squad announced some of the more notable names Ulysses Bentley,
Chris Leamons and coleman Owen James Boyd coming back, So
don't be surprised to see those guys. I still think
Lamon's is going to see a little bit of action
this year.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Yeah, certainly, with depending on how that cornerback room shapes
out and how healthy certain guys are. And I believe
we saw a couple of waiver claims to Kevin. We
saw Sam Womack get claimed by the Titan, Jelanny Woods
got claimed by the Jets, and I could be missing
somebody else, but those are.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
The two do in week one. Yeah, Juju brns to
the Dolphins revenge game. Juju brins from all the game
Howard versus Juju Brince? Who can revenge harder? So did
they just square up at you know, midfield and say,
visit the game? All right?
Speaker 1 (13:01):
But that too the networks will show as they're saying, hey,
tomorrow it'll be the Cults and the Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
No chance, I think it'll be Tua and Daniel Jones
in the graphic there.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
The national audience to be who are these guys? I
probably wouldn't mention it. I guess the newsiest Ballard item
was him saying that we are not trading him in
regards to Anthony and richardson the trade deadlines. What about
two months from right now? It's usually kind of late October,
So that's probably the newsiest item off of that. So
you know, if you take him out his word and
(13:32):
I largely don't see a ton of positives and trading
him in the next two months, So that seems to
make sense to me, and I'm not stunned by that.
I've never gotten the impression that they were going to
be quick with the outright trade of Anthony Richardson. So
we'll see how that plays out.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
So if a GM got drunk and said I'll offer
you a second round pick Anthony Richardson, you're saying nope,
not trading.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
And if it knocked on your door and said i'll
serenad you Mark, yeah, I mean, yeah, you're gonna say
yes to probably some things, but I don't believe there
is very active shopping and or listening for that.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
There was one acquisition off waivers for the Colts, the
linebacker Chad Mumma from Jacksonville. What the kind of plans
might they have for him? James?
Speaker 2 (14:14):
For what I understand, he was mainly like a special teamer,
so perhaps that is going to be his role. I
can't picture him coming in and being a starter or
something like that, but taking a flyer on a guy
who can add to your other unit of the game,
which probably doesn't get talked about enough when.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
It comes to offense, defense, and special teams all right.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
So the Colts seem to be set for their first
full week of practice next week, getting ready for a
regular season game with this fifty three man roster, and
they will open the season, of course, against the Miami Dolphins.
You'll hear all the games right here's always on ninety
three five and one O seven to five of the
famis putting all the shoulder programming that the Colts provide
each afternoon and certainly on Friday nights and Monday nights.
(14:54):
So stay tuned here to the latest in Colts coverage. Meanwhile,
the Indian A fever off until Friday night. They'll be
on the West Coast. They'll take on the Los Angeles Sparks.
They are currently in the sixth spot in the WNBA
and looking to improve upon that as they head down
the stretch. And still no real word on Caitlin Clark.
But we did learn over the last thirty six hours
(15:17):
or so KB that Stephanie White would like to see
five full practices from Caitlin Clark before they think about
putting her back into a basketball game.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Yeah, and I think today might be one of those practices.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
I fingers crossed.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
I think yesterday was an off day. Yeah, I should
say I should probably preface by saying potentially one of them.
They are going to practice today. We'll see if Kaitlyn
Clark participates in. It's probably the best way to put it.
But yes, tomorrow night, La. They've been a little up
and down here lately. They've had the Fever's number this season.
It slay favorite. So again, Tuesday was a huge win.
And now tomorrow against the Sparks, Sunday against the Valkyries
as vital of games as well. So big, big weekend
(15:52):
here as they start that final West Coast trip of
the year.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
All right. In Major League Baseball last night, pirates over
to Cardinals by the score of two to one. I
buried the lead because the Dodgers. That was tough Dodgers
one five to one sweep. You're talking the Cubs are
talking today.
Speaker 3 (16:10):
No, man, I know, I'm legit asking you know, for
how many if that was the end of the series.
Speaker 1 (16:14):
There's the three games I mentioned.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
The Reds are dead, absolutely dead.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
Yeah, I think you had the d this week. Time
of death did on arrival all that? Probably yes days?
Mark play them all bad day by Daniel Power. Play
it all, go ahead, I know you got it all?
Cute abandon being a Reds fan? Are you gonna abandon
following this team once?
Speaker 1 (16:32):
What's the night?
Speaker 3 (16:32):
What else you gotta do? You want more?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (16:35):
You want to? Man, you're a massachist. I was gonna say,
what is going on this morning? Yeah? We deserve it? Well,
where are you gonna go?
Speaker 1 (16:42):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (16:43):
Exactly. I actually think it's good. You know, I got
you know, I can't be worried about a baseball team
in September.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
Yeah, I got it was. It was fun while it lasted.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Thank you well, said Rick. Yeah, I gotta be worried
about college football team on Sunday. By the way, speaking
of Rick Carl, did we see TJ McConnell tow the
rubber last night?
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Decent? First pitch? Decent?
Speaker 3 (17:07):
If there was a left hand or batter that thing,
that guy would have been straight to methodist.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
He got it there and it was within the vicinity.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
It sounds like how I would describe one of my kids,
you know, in the back of well, you know he's
not on effort there.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
But he's not an actual pitcher. I'm I'm more worried
that he's like gonna throw the ball in the dirt
six feet in front of the plate or air mail
at ten feet over the catch.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
So on a scale of one, it's ten, Kevin Bough
and give us your TJ. McConnell's I think there are
parameters of the first pitch. First off, beyond commendable. TJ
McConnell actually told the rubber. So many people don't go
back to the actual rubber. You know, I'm gonna go
off from the front of the mound. McConnell went all
the way to the rubber. Okay, great work. Yes you
are right, he did not skip it. So commendable. But man, boy,
(17:54):
that thing, if that was Griffy, if that was bonds,
oh boy, that left handed batter. You need one of
those bonds. L both things to try and protect you.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
You need today. I want you criticism for a guy.
I need to see your first pitch. My favorite part
about the TJ. McConnell experience. And by the way, and
talking to some people that were there last night, like unbelievable.
He signed autographs from five thirty six fifteen. The line
is still throngs of people goes and throws the first pitch.
He's not supposed to go back and sign autographs, goes
(18:24):
back signs autographs for like another hour.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Just love that about TJ McConnell. That was a blue
esque line. Yeah, that line was absurd. And told you
Scott Acknell joining today. Thirty boots on the ground at
Victory Field. Last night, I believe TJ McConnell said that
he organized a setup inside of the Saint Vincent Center
to practice for the first pitch, stepping off exactly how
(18:47):
far the mound is had one of the pacers assistants
help him out there? Anything more TJ. McConnell than that, No, I'm.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
I'm petitioning the Indians right now, James. I know you
can joined me here. We need Kevin Bowen throw out
a first pitch for the Indians at this point in time.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
Now, Yes, this man is very critical. I gotta see.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
I think I have I think you'll be able to
pull it on.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
We the only market where the most popular athletes in
town are the punter and the backup point guard. Well,
I mean is hurt the X punter the former. We're
going through a transitional period here. I mean that line
Mark last night, you weren't kidding those Bluey Times ten. Well, yeah,
adult males were interested. Forget these kids. I'm getting in line.
Speaker 1 (19:32):
I want.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
To clip that for yourself. Great McConnell last night.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
All right, Giants did beat the Cubs last night twelve
to three. And the Cubs are going the wrong way
these these days.
Speaker 5 (19:44):
Too, lost the first two games of the series. Still
only six and a half back of Milwaukee. But yeah,
I can't. You can't get the brooms out today. Let's
get a win, all right.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
The Royals also beat the White Sox twelve to yesterday.
I did want to throw in one thing. I don't
know if you guys saw this h up in Fort Wayne,
Carroll High School girls volleyball beat Homestead Girls volleyball. They
played what's believed to be the first ever high school
volleyball match outdoors at the football Stadium.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
Were awesome, specially cool Grace Smith, the photog for the
Annapolis Star, and my buddy Brian Hinschin, who went out
there to cover that it looked really cool, And honestly,
I was looking at those photos and thinking, this is
so Indiana. I love how much this state loves high
school sports.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
I'd love to know who created this idea, because I
would love to give them some credit. That was awesome
seeing you know, basically picture high school football stadium, tons
of people in the crowd. Yeah, and really cool. So
perfect night too. I mean, you can't think the weather
that far in advance, I'm sure, like Candy as Sky,
(20:49):
absolutely awesome idea. So absolutely love that, And it looks
to be a great night for a little football action
here in the city. You Indian Marion, which I know
is a big one in those ranks. So Ted Carris,
Chris Keeper's company squaring off there on the west side.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
It's pretty cool. Carol did win that match, by the
way over Homestead in case you're wondering. Also tennis yesterday
for the men. The winners were Carlos Allcross, Taylor Fritz
Ben Shelton. The American also won a Novak. Jogovich continues
to roll through. He had a straight said victory in
his match. So that's what's happening in the world of sports.
Anything else you want to throw in before we move
on either one of you.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
No again, high school sports man, I mean, I think
we're renching closer to college football. So Saturday again at
noon purduing ball State two thirty down there in Bloomington,
Indiana and Old Dominion. I did see a mock draft
yesterday that had the Indiana football quarterback going number ooh
no overall.
Speaker 2 (21:41):
This must have been somewhere on the IU blogs or
I c S, I you Hooser dot Net.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
CBS Sports, Fernando Windows of the number one overall pick
and only six mock draft we can only hope got
eleven reality boys, I you football, that's where it's at.
Any it ain't going number one Sunday night, let's go.
I mean, didn't field Yates have him somewhat high to mark?
Wasn't he the top fifteen?
Speaker 6 (22:04):
Did that?
Speaker 3 (22:04):
I would have to find that article. It's a long
away from number one overall though, but good and that's
gone the days when you said Indiana football is having
a quarterback O top fifteen.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
That is fair, that is fair. But this I feel
this is Curtis Rourke a razor. Let's just see if
he can fill those shoes for now, challes.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
Patrick and the YouTube chat. He was at the volleyball
match last night. Awesome atmosphere had the game also playing
on the big screen of the football field. Massive crowd.
Oh man, that sounds lovely. That sounds awesome.
Speaker 1 (22:34):
All right. Later on today Scott Agnes joins us at
ay thirty Tom Dienert at nine o'clock, we'll tell you
more about that and talk about the Colts and that
press conference with Chris Ballard yesterday. In a moment as
we continue ninety three five and one o seven five
the fans, good morning, as we are now creeping up
on game number one of the National Football League for
the Indianapolis Colts in the year of twenty twenty five.
(22:55):
They'll be taking on the Miami Dolphins and final I
don't know. I never want to say final fifty three
man roster, but after acquisitions and waivers and practice squad placements,
it feels like this is the group you have right now.
And yesterday, Chris Balladers he does every year after that
takes place met with the media and as you might
(23:15):
have guessed, almost all the conversation Kevin Bahm was about
the quarterback situation. Why Daniel Jones as a starter? Does
this mean you've given up on Anthony Richardson? What's the plan?
How's this look moving forward? What about this? What about that?
And so I don't know that anything. I don't know
that the conversation we had before yesterday was advanced any
further than it was when the day started, was it.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
Yeah, that's probably a good way to put it. And
I think we've just reached a point in time where,
you know, again, on field answers are going to have
to happen for anybody's real thoughts to change wholeheartedly about
whether the Coultar quarterback wise or you know, certainly how
they feel about Chris Ballard, things like that. And again,
(23:58):
maybe it's going to take more than just one year
of results for that to happen. That remains to be seen.
But yeah, I I wanted to make sure that Like
when we discussed the ballot press conference on yesterday's show,
I didn't think we dove real deep into it. I
maybe I had a general apathy towards it, but I
just I wasn't expecting much from him, And I think
(24:22):
when you heard the answers, it's you you get why
I wasn't expecting much. And again, I'm gonna go back
to the combine here in two specific questions, why are
you getting the ninth year? Okay? His answer to that
was more or less Jim Mersey agreed to be patient
with me, Like we're gonna reset in twenty twenty three,
(24:43):
We're gonna draft Richardson, We're gonna be told you ers
said fix this right. But like agreeing to patients, like
agreeing to a hard reset up, Hey, first year head coach,
you know, biggest quarterback project whatever in the history of
the NFL boom. That's gonna mean you're gonna have a
longer leash Like that was said. It wasn't something on
the resume for the reason why he was getting a
(25:04):
ninth year. And then again when you ask him, you know,
what do you feel like your greatest accomplishment here is
heading into the ninth year. You know you got to
go back to twenty eighteen, You got to go back
to twenty twenty of a playoff win or get into
the playoffs in twenty twenty. Well, you know, this is
twenty twenty five, and in the NFL world, it's a
long long time. So maybe we're just prisoners of the
moment and reacting to yesterday. But I think we have
(25:27):
generally seen this tone from Ballard, definitely throughout twenty twenty five,
and I would argue even dating back to the last
couple of press conferences twenty twenty four or twenty twenty three.
It's just kind of the reality of where things are
at with his state in the franchise and the franchise
as a whole.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
What did you think when he said, you know, guys,
there are fifty one other players on the roster.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
My initial thought was thinking, number one, I understand where
you're coming from, because if I was in his shoes,
I'd be thinking the same thing. But then number two,
as I wrote my piece for the Athletic, the other
fifty one don't matter as much as those two.
Speaker 3 (26:12):
It's just as simple as that. So I did get
a kick out of that.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
And the one thing I will say, because I hear
fans often tell me this on social media and occasionally
in real life, I run into him like, Man, you're
like you're so hard on Ballad or man, he really
pushed back on you or Kevin or gave Stephen hold
of the business, And why is she so defensive? Look, man,
when you're sitting up there for thirty minutes taking a
beating from the local media, Personally, I don't care if
(26:37):
you throw a few jabs back. I mean, that's the
nature of the business. And I feel like if you
can't take some of that as someone who dishes it
and has dished it, then why are you in that field?
So I didn't think that he was super defensive or
he sat up there and gave us, you know, a
ton of nothing burgers. I think that, as Kevin said,
and as you said, Jeff, like a position now where
(27:02):
it's a cyclical or is that the right word cyclical?
Whatever the word is conversation because the same things can
happening year after year and you're the same person year
after year. So until something changes, what else can I
ask you? You know, what else can really be broached
of you when that is the same thing.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Yeah, I thought the fifty one players comment, I was
struck by it a bit, and that was if my
math is correct. And listening back to the press conference,
I want to say I was like minute thirteen or fourteen, Yeah,
about thirteen minutes in and it you know, he was
ready to move on to a different topic. And you
go back to the opening press conference, it's not about
(27:43):
one player in regards to quarterback. Good reference Kevin and
if you watch his ten year play out, I actually
think this might have been not this year's combine, but
the combine prior. You know, when he sat down with us,
you know, I asked him, okay, where, why don't you
(28:04):
feel like your tenure has led to the results that
you would like? And I thought, in a very candid
and again accurate manner, he described the constant revolving door
at quarterback. And now you know here he is wanting
to move on from that quarterback question. And again, that
was eighteen months ago he said that answer. And here
(28:25):
you are eighteen months later, and you can make the
argument the quarterback questions have only continued to grow really
in that timeframe, and go back to Quentin Nelson expressing
some frustration in his you know, arrival lines up just
one year after Ballad's arrival. So yeah, that made me.
I thought it was a very interesting comment. I get
(28:45):
why he probably wanted to move on to that point,
but the fluctuation of about the quarterback position in his
tenure is pretty wild. So yeah, that was a line
that definitely struck with me.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
It's fan Morning show KBJ Beach, Mark Dyden over there
on the ones and twos playing Vanessa Carlton all over
the place, today, which is fine with me. Two three, nine,
ten seventy. The fan text line Justin speaks for a
lot of folks. I mean all this talk and as
you said, cyclical, it just goes round and round and round.
And we talked about maybe diminished attendance up at Graham Park.
(29:20):
We've talked about just a lack of enthusiasm, the apathy
for a lot of fans. And I think Justin sums
it up when he says, I'm just ready for the
daughters to put their stamp on the team and push
the button for a total reset, find your quarterback of
the future, rebuild the team. You have a left tackle
to start with, a total reset. I can get behind that.
Find yourself as a quarterback. You have a left tackle
(29:41):
for the future. Clean house. Look, it's if it was
just as easy as going out and finding a quarterback.
Because even when you had that number one overall pick.
Look the Panthers a couple of years ago, same drafty.
They're not quite sure. They're they're optimistic about Bryce Young
after the way he finished last year. Well, he had
a really nice seven game finish last year where I
think he put up a lot of top shelf numbers
(30:02):
and came close within the thirty seconds to beat in
both Philadelphia and Kansas City. But the point is is,
you just don't go find quarterbacks even when you have
the number one overall pick. It's kind of a fifty
to fifty proposition.
Speaker 2 (30:16):
Yes, But I guess my pushback there, Jeff, would be
when you get a pick of that magnitude in the
top five and you choose a quarterback and you miss,
most people don't get a chance to choose a quarterback again.
And so that's the stakes of the game you're playing.
So I understand it's hard and it's not exact science,
and even looking back at certain players that were taking
(30:38):
over the years, you're probably more likely, as you referenced, Jeff,
to miss on that pick than to hit and find
you know, a all time great quarterback or really just
a quarterback that will be very good for your franchise.
I can't say all time great because that's even rarer,
but yeah, I mean that's what you signed up for though.
Speaker 1 (30:56):
Yep, that's how it goes. But my point is, Kevin,
there are a lot of people who kind of feel
that way, like, let's just move on to what's next,
because this feels like doing the same thing again year
after year after year.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Yeah. Correct, it almost seems like going through the motions.
It's the final year of whatever Tom Allen and Bloomington.
It's trying to think of a longer ten ured coach
because Nate Bjorkrn isn't very apples to apples with the Pacers.
But you know that sort of Hey, we feel like
we're just got to get to the finish line and
see what happens here. And that's an awful feeling for
(31:27):
a fan base. You know, we have Pete Sampson on yesterday,
and I promise you I'm not trying to make this
about my fandom, but you know, he referenced her. I
asked him about a story he wrote about how Marcus
Freeman has turned Notre Dame into a durable national title contender.
I think ultimately as a fan, pretty basketball fans are
feeling it right now. Help potentially Indiana football fans are
(31:49):
about to really feel it for the next handful of years.
To me, what you want more than anything is for
the team that you love to have that five to
seven years Sigel, where you know annually we've got a chance.
We are in position right now to be a team
that's one of the last ones standing. And again you're
(32:11):
not gonna do it every single year, but the thought is,
sooner or later, the more quality darts you get to
throw out the dart board, you're gonna hit bullseye. And obviously,
if you want to make it a predue basketball reference,
they got all the way to Monday Night a couple
of years ago, and they've had great Big Ten runs
and other great now you know, NCAA Tournament runs, and
(32:34):
certainly for Notre Dame last year they were able to
get to the final game, Like that is what you want,
and right now it seems like you're so far away
from creating that window. You know, if you want to
look at the Manning era, I think anybody you ask
in the Manning era, they won't say that six team,
(32:54):
the Super Bowl team was their best team. They'll point
to five, they'll point to O seven, they might point
to nine, and yet it was that team that got
it done. But yet, when you give yourself a five, six,
seven year window, you're able to break through, and I
think ultimately to get there, you've got to find the
answer at the most important position in sports.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
They have a very high care factor.
Speaker 3 (33:16):
I was just about the readiness and the togetherness mentioned
Nate York.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
I feel it.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
No idea is he back with Toronto? For some reason,
Portland popped into my.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Head, also inspired by Graham from Avon. He and Mark
were on exactly the same page there h.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
I like that, So I do want to. I know
Mark pulled a bunch of audio last night and I
felt bad. I was sending some sex messages. He exd
for audio and I was like, here, you're getting audio
by the and I believe you have ever feel bad?
Speaker 3 (33:43):
The question?
Speaker 2 (33:44):
Uh nah, not really, that's the job, right, But I
do think Kevin had the question and correct me if
I'm wrong. Kevin, you pose it as do you think
you all did the right homework on Anthony Richardson? And
I thought Ballard's response was interesting and we can stly
get into that. But I do want to, you know,
play it here markets You've got a queued up to
(34:05):
sort of react to it live on the air.
Speaker 7 (34:07):
Yeah, we knew, we knew he was, We knew he
was gonna take time.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
I think everybody knew.
Speaker 7 (34:12):
Yeah, I think we knew, and I'm we knew he
was gonna be a little bit of a roller coaster.
Speaker 8 (34:17):
Absolutely.
Speaker 7 (34:19):
I mean, you know, just his history in college and
so that's just part of the growth. Now, you gotta
sometimes you got to take a swing. We took a swing,
and look, I'm not ready to say that we missed
because I don't think we have yet. I think Anthony
has a bright future.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
I believe that.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
Is it with the cults?
Speaker 3 (34:41):
That's the question, Kevin.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Do you.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
See where he's going or what he was trying to do,
because in my mind I understand that he personally might
believe that, but from an organizational standpoint, I just don't
know again where you go from here to give him
an opportunity to be that guy?
Speaker 6 (35:05):
Right?
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Yeah, you know he described it later in the press conference,
and I'll paraphrase, but you know he said some of
the effect James of like there's one out there that
it's worked. Yeah, in reference to Alex Smith.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yeah, that was the why should we believe this possible
question that I through at him just because.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
And like that little snippet to me, it just describes
trying to put it into betting terms, Just how long
of a parlay that you're trying to hit here? I
mean in some way to put it, you know, in
some way, shape or form you're trying to hit whatever. Hey,
I'm gonna bet on all four eleven seeds to win
their first round game in the NCAA tournament. Like That's
what it feels like with the Richardson parlay. I mean,
(35:54):
there are so many branches to the Richardson at this
point failure two and a half years into it. I'd
say so much of the root of it is in misevaluation,
is whatever, not doing enough homework in assessing him at Florida.
And but by that, do you mean off the field
as well? Yes, yes, I mean both on and off.
Speaker 1 (36:14):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
And then then to clarify there, I'm not saying Anthony's
some bad person.
Speaker 3 (36:19):
He gets into a ton of trouble.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Is just the leadership qualities, their preparedness for games, that
sort of thing.
Speaker 3 (36:25):
Yeah, you know, I think that's where so much of
it lies. And on the field as well. And you know,
if you want to walk away from anything tangibly from
what Ballot said yesterday, a couple of things. One he
says we're not trading him, Okay, so there's your news.
Item Two, it doesn't sound like James. And again these
are public words, but the Colts have also had public
words in the other direction about Richardson in the last
(36:47):
couple of years. It doesn't sound like the issues right
now are Monday through Saturday work ethic, quarterback standard anything
like that. And again we have heard them say that before,
so I could where people quickly are saying, hey, of
course they're not going to say that. They don't want
to throw the kid into the bus anymore, but at
times they have shared that. But right now that doesn't
(37:09):
seem to be the case with him exactly.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
We heard a lot of that word operation. We like
the operation better with Daniel Jones right now.
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Correct, I mean oftentimes when they praise Daniel Jones, it
is probably also a direct one eight two Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Cody Wright's kind of crazy thought before we even play
game one. But isn't this roster actually set up for
a young quarterback really well? It's supposed to be a
good line stud, tight end, possession, wide receiver in pits,
slotting downs, deep ball guys, top five running backs, supposedly,
good play caller. It's just the weird dynamic of time
is up for Chris and Shane to win, but they
should be letting their young quarterback develop with what seems
(37:48):
like a really solid supporting cast. Instead, they're relying on
the cast to elevate DJ and save everyone's jobs.
Speaker 3 (37:55):
I think that's really well said. You go back to
twenty twenty three, you had an offensive line that was
the only the new left tackle. You obviously didn't f
Tyler Warren. From a wide receiver standpoint, Pierce was not
yet Pierce, and josh Awllens was a rookie. So I'm
trying to think was the Taylor contract drama was that
(38:16):
twenty twenty three or twenty twenty four.
Speaker 2 (38:19):
That was twenty twenty three, because remember Anthony started the
year month and was kind of promising, oh.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Yeah, his only snap, he only played like one snap
with them exactly. Yeah, So then you had that so yeah, yeah,
I think that's a great point from Cody there.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
I still to this day don't think that JT gets
that extension if Ar does not look as good as
he did that first month of the season. I truly
believe they thought, wait a second, this guy is better
than we thought. Let's get our running back in there
make his life easier. Then you know things change.
Speaker 3 (38:48):
James, what do you make of if I could transition
away from quarterback for a brief minute. I guess I'm
Chris Baoward here thirteen minutes in the Prescott Well, but said,
hold on, now, I'm the one asking the question this year.
Positions of strength that he mentioned makes sense to you?
Not makes sense to you? Would you throw any others
out there? Trenches, wide receiver, tight end with the positions
(39:10):
that he mentioned as what he consider strengths.
Speaker 2 (39:13):
Yeah, the one that I would push back on a bit,
it is probably tight end because although everyone here is
high on Tyler Warren feeling good, you know by the way, Yes,
I think that he elevates that room a lot, but
you didn't change anything else really outside of him, And
I get that Marley Cox, in my opinion, is probably
(39:34):
a better suited player for the role he'll be in
this season versus being your number one guy.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
But again, you didn't really upgrade anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
So I have questions about that, especially because football, you
know how his game goes. If Tyler Warren gets dinged up,
you're back to where you were before with the same
tight end room. So I have questions there, But I
do agree that wide receiver is really good for them,
a really healthy room. Do they have a bona fide
star Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson. No, but I think
(40:03):
they have a lot of really good players that can contribute,
especially in this style of offense that I'll imagine with
Daniel Jones is a bit more conservative, and you have,
in my opinion, a couple of wide receivers and Josh Downs.
I'm not gonna Piman Junior, who can really help you
in the middle of the field short yardage sort of
like the in between games. So that to me is
(40:24):
a plus. And I did love and I'm not saying
this casually. I mean this honestly, him giving a shot
out to Lawan Treadwell because.
Speaker 3 (40:31):
Tread Well not on the practice squad.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Yeah, So we'll see what that means. I believe they
have three spots left. They announced fourteen, but they have
one player that was the international exemption. You can have
sixteen on your practice squad, so they have three more
that they can feel. And the reason why he be
seventeen is you can have sixteen against American players and
then one international exemption.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
So we'll see where that all shakes out. But that's
a guy.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Who again on another team, he might be the sixth
receiver is just here they got too was talent that position.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
As of the side. Someone asked kJ from Brownsburg wanted
to know did we hear anything on Mike Hilton being
brought in for a tryout yesterday?
Speaker 2 (41:07):
No, no update just there just yet. I'm sorry, but
I will certainly check in with the ever so telling
sources to see what I can bring you.
Speaker 3 (41:16):
Maybe they're in the show.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
We'll see it.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
Sounds like they're going to work out a lot of
dudes here in the next few days.
Speaker 8 (41:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
I know Adam Scheff rather report of Anthony Walker, former
Colts linebacker been in Miami most recently has started games
of the NFL. I think people will remember that name.
So Ballard definitely mentioned that. I know Jeremy Fowler from
ESPN had Tyler Scott, a wide out I think spent
time with the Bears. Drafted by the Bears. Yeah, yeah,
(41:44):
fourth round pick, like yeah, I think brings a bill.
They had him signing with the Colts practice squad, so
that would probably further push Laquon Treadwell away because that
would give him what three line or three wideouts, I
think on the practice squad with that, so no, also
no Jason Bean on the practice squad. For those that
care are curious if the fourth quarterback would be there
(42:04):
or if Jason Bean would hang around. So I'm not
surprised by that, but just thought our chair.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
My guest too, is if they got to the point
where they needed to add a practice squad quarterback, somewhere downline,
he probably isn't going to have a job, would be
my guess. Somewhere he might be able to pick him
back up off the street, but that's the gamble you take.
You never know. Coming up in a minute, we will
talk more about the Colts their state of affairs as
they get ready for the twenty twenty five season. Coming
(42:30):
up at eight thirty, Scott Agnes will stop by, and
then at nine o'clock Tom Deenart from on three dot com,
we'll stop by to talk a little college football. We'll
take some of your comments on the fan text line
at two three nine ten seventy. You can even call
us up the old fashioned way at that same number.
It's all straight ahead on ninety three five one oh
seven five the fan. Good morning, everyone, Welcome into the
(42:51):
fan Morning Show as a couple of textures has pointed
out as all we do we ever get tired of
talking about Chris Ballard and Shagsdike and and I said, yes, yes,
we do. It would be so much fun to be
talking about other things at this point in time. Uh,
And we'll get back to talking about all the comments
that Chris Ballard made. And here are some of his
comments talking about Anthony Richardson and why he's on the
(43:13):
bench and why they went with Daniel Jones and what
the plan is or isn't moving forward. But was there
before we move on to that in the spirit of
that of that text and those texts that I've been getting,
was there anything else that you learned about this final
fifty three man roster from Chris Ballard yesterday that you
didn't know going injab Yeah.
Speaker 2 (43:32):
Not necessarily. I did get a kick out of him
talking about Maley Cox. At the end of the press conference,
Kevin and I believe Mike Chapel shout out to the dean.
Fox fifty nine's Mike Chapel was like, hey, you know what,
so chap he literally says, you know, hey, you know
most still here, you know, guys thinking about trying to upgrade,
(43:56):
but he's still here, and he said, hey, I love
Morley Cox, and I think for there are most fans
they're like, why do you love a guy who doesn't
produce a lot of big numbers. But again, I go
back to what I said right before the break. I
truly believe Molly Cox is a fine number two tight
end or number three if he's used as a blocker
and in a more diminished role as a pass catcher.
(44:18):
So his value in conjunction with Tyler Warren's presence now
being on the roster, to me makes him better in
a sense. Now, I might be going out on a
huge limit here because obviously Malay Cox isn't going to
be some prolific tight end, but I do think he
can be very valuable for this team, especially considering that
(44:39):
there's still probably going to be more run first than
past first. So I knew Chris would love being able
to talk about Mally Cox outside of you know, the
million questions we had about this quarterback situation, and also
on a more I guess urgent note, because I do
think that Jalen Travis has a chance to possibly play
(45:00):
this year as their swing tackle. He seems very high
on Jeen Travis and what he could bring. And I
thought that was interesting because his value changed so quickly
when Blake Freeland went down with the broken leg. Now,
Jalen Travis is your guy if somebody else gets banged
up on that offensive line, particularly at the tackle spots,
and so I'm excited to see what he could bring
to the table if and when he's called upon.
Speaker 3 (45:20):
Did you say the word conjunction? I did conjunction.
Speaker 1 (45:29):
We're playing all the hits this morning.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
That's coolhouse rock there.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
These kids don't know nothing about the gas.
Speaker 3 (45:39):
James Boyd, thank you for what's the other one? It
was something about like a bill Oh yeah, I'm just yeah.
See those are bangers, man. We could exactly a couple
of things for me. Yess rock again, positions of strength, trenches,
wide out, tight end. You know, at this point yesterday
we did ask the question is it truly over for
(46:00):
Juju Brents, Jolani Woods, those guys here, both of them
were claimed. The Colts had three guys claim, which is
pretty rare. That is a big number for the Colts.
James pointed this out earlier. Samuel Womack, a cornerback claimed
by the Titans. There's nothing no one does sloppy seconds
better than the FC South. Nobody excuse me.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
Mark all the sudden start paying attention to the show again.
Speaker 3 (46:23):
They just pass each other around like price out there.
So Samuel well Mack to the Titans there as a
corner I think Tennessee claimed four again. They had the
number one waiver priority as having the number one pick
last year, so they got four new players. Jelani Woods
to the Jets and then Juju Brince indeed to the Dolphins,
(46:43):
who the Colts will see in Week one. So you
know what, I love me that storyline. Can you imagine
what that game might be like for Juju Brents.
Speaker 1 (46:53):
I hope he blows.
Speaker 2 (46:56):
Yeah, agreed if he were to pick off the quarterback.
Now mind, you's got to make the official active roster.
Speaker 3 (47:02):
But and as of now he is on the fifteen
minut roster. We'll see how much up to speed he
can be in ten days. But yes, him and Xavier
Howard if either of them record an interception, can you
imagine the sprint to the opposing bench for a celebration
potentially on that So maybe on the Week one story
lines that there's a lot of them. Frankly, Juju, Brent's
to the Dolphins and Chris, you know, kind of summarize Juju,
(47:25):
you know, in the bad luck phrase, and I think
to be fair to Juju. And again, injuries have obviously
dominated his career. Unfortunately the sample size, albeit eleven games,
really small sample size in two years. I did think
when he played he looked like a guy that could
play in the NFL. The question was just obviously availability.
(47:46):
So he's off to Miami there and the Colts will
potentially see him Week one.
Speaker 1 (47:49):
Two seventy. The text line and the text line seizing
on the Chris Pallard comments about having people who have
a normal job, right, remember that when he was Sea
that compare.
Speaker 3 (48:00):
Let's get into that.
Speaker 1 (48:01):
Steve says, this is coming from someone with a normal job.
I think James and Kevin should buy Ballard some tap
shoes because he's always dancing around their questions. And then
Brian says, morning fellows love the show in relation to
Ballard's comments about having a real job. I have a
real job. I'm a PM for a large electrical contractor,
and with his results, I personally would have fired him
(48:23):
a long time ago.
Speaker 2 (48:25):
Yeah, I didn't take that as him taking a shot
at people who worked the regular nine to five's. And
I try to be very gracious on these airwaves when
I tell you I am living my dream you all
know preach. I am not one to shot away from that,
because this is certainly a sweet gig. But I think
Chris Ballard was saying something similar to that in a
(48:46):
tongue in cheek fashion. Now I know he had the
you know, where is his person sending his email from?
Is if from their parents' basement or whatever, like, Yeah,
that was a little verbal jab, but I think he
understands the magnitude. And I never took Chris as somebody
who takes it for granted. I think he was just saying, like, yeah,
I understand when I was asking him about pressure, that
(49:06):
the pressure is a bit different because I am doing
something that is in a lot of people's eyes, not
something that's gonna tip the scales of like my household
or society or something like that.
Speaker 3 (49:17):
So I didn't take it as that.
Speaker 2 (49:19):
I know some people were gonna get little priickly about
that comment, which is fair for their perspective, but no,
I didn't view it that way.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
Yeah, I don't know. If he had to go back,
maybe he would amend that. But I'm kind of with James.
I didn't really take that, and James, you and I
might just be numb frankly to Baller at this point.
Like you know, Mark Mark played audio yesterday of the
wide receiver comment. I mean, what, Mark, that was twenty nineteen,
combine twenty twenty comeback then, Yeah, I mean that's five
six years ago. So at this point, I'm just used
(49:49):
to Baller, and I'm used to those sorts of comments.
You know, honestly, if you really want to get in
the weeds about you know, analogies to people's jobs and
things like that. The comment that I would say is
more bothersome to me was back at the start of
training camp when he was asked about you know pressure,
Oh yeah, that one was all right. He quickly referenced, no,
(50:11):
pressure is paycheck to paycheck. Pressure is you know whatever,
trying to make ends meet for your family. And I
just wanted to be like, dude, I mean, that's just
a cop out. When we're in this press conference bubble,
We're living in an NFL world. We're not living in
a world where you know, there are people that do
(50:31):
have literally every two weeks that is their ends. And yes,
I get that that is a reality for some people,
but you happen to be someone that has a job
that makes millions of dollars. And to people's point, if
in a lot of people's jobs, if they had the
resume that you've had right now, they would no longer
be working that job. So yeah, that they would not
(50:52):
be almost a decade on the same job. Correct. That
one probably bothered me more than yesterday's when.
Speaker 1 (50:57):
That always reminds me of the lead Trevino quote on
pressure when he said, you don't know what pressure is
until you play for five dollars a hole with only
two dollars in your pocket.
Speaker 3 (51:05):
Yeah, exactly. No, that's a that's a great line.
Speaker 1 (51:09):
Two through nine, ten seventy is the text line number.
We'll get to some of those little bit later on.
I did wonder and I heard a lot of the
press conferences I was coming in and out of places,
and then I listened back to some of it. What
we learned about that group of veteran cornerbacks yesterday? Did
people seem content with that? Did anybody even ask a
lot of questions about that.
Speaker 3 (51:28):
Yeah, he was definitely asked about corner and again it
sounds like they're not done there. Potentially, we'll see how
they rest the week plays out, but yeah, I mean
they have. He kind of went player by player down
the list and you know what they like about Makai
Blackman and Jonathan Edwards the undrafted free agent. And again,
if you want to look at it, Edward's probably just
flat out made the team over Juju Brens. So here
(51:50):
we talked a little bout.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Shout out to him. By the way, I do want
to just give him a quick moment. I mean, this
is a guy who's ndrafted at Tollai, not a powerhouse
university or a program, and for the Green Wave.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
Yeah, when you're.
Speaker 2 (52:00):
Undrafted, you're already going to fight that uphill battle to
make the team. But this guy who showed enough in
a position that quickly changed due to injuries and took
advantage of it. So I'm looking forward to meeting this
Jonathan Edwards. I know I've kind of been in the
same vicinity, but just getting to know him a bit
more as a season approaches.
Speaker 3 (52:17):
Yeah, So I know I've echoed this a lot here
over the last few days, So I apologize for repeating myself,
but I just haven't seen a position group in the
Ballad era. I have more investment in one offseason than
Corner and now as we train. And I mean this
with all sincerity. A major credit to Chris Ballard for that.
You know, I think we're living in a cycle where
(52:38):
everything Ballard says is often met with just immediate criticism,
and I'm really trying not to. Yes, it's a big picture.
Do I think Chris Ballard deserved a ninth year. No,
I've made that clear. I didn't think he deserved an eighth. Frankly,
probably a seventh. But I do have to live in
reality of like the season's about to start, Let's evaluate
these individuals on individual you know, moves and games, etc.
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Etc.
Speaker 3 (52:59):
And talk big picture when I guess time calls for that,
but living in the world of what has he done
at Corner here this offseason? That was an issue for
you last year? That was did they start Dallas Flowers?
Speaker 1 (53:12):
Last year?
Speaker 3 (53:12):
James coming off the Achilles?
Speaker 1 (53:14):
They did?
Speaker 3 (53:15):
Let mean think about that, they designed a dude coming
off a torn Achilles. Samuel Wallmack was a waiver claim
who ended up playing important snaps for you very early
in the season. Now Samuel Wallmack is getting claimed by
another team. You have had a rookie except for a
torn acl and yet you have cut a second round.
Speaker 2 (53:37):
Actually, I take that back. They didn't start Dallas Flowers
last year, however they him.
Speaker 3 (53:42):
Yeah, some reason. I'm picturing the Jacksonville game and Brian
Thomas Junior just running straight. Yeah, he definitely played though.
So you were playing a guy off at torn Achilles
very early in the season at a position that that
sounds frightening. Sou It's just a total really one to eighty.
Now again, is it going to work out? Some of
these guys are age. Yeah, you have some question marks.
But to me, if you have a glaring issue and
(54:06):
you're bringing in a new defensive coordinator that wants to
play a different system, you need to make sure that
he has some ingredients that he thinks will benefit him.
And I think that this isn't an attempt at doing that,
and I think at times there hasn't been enough of
that in the ballot era.
Speaker 1 (54:21):
Uh. And last, before we move on anything else other
than quarterback that we haven't talked about, and we talked
about tight end. Did he address the offensive line at all?
Raymond anchoring things there, feeling pretty good about what they
have put in place where they're at there.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
I do want to answer your questions.
Speaker 2 (54:40):
I want to pivot real quick, Caleb Boggs, I did,
forget this shout out to Jonathan Edwards, who also played
Aniana States before playing at Tulane. Roll trees unbelievable now
j and V paid for his exactly all those jump
shots he's shooting on the weekends and made people, you know,
bend money on it. But I do think getting your question, Jeff,
(55:01):
he didn't reference like any of the veterans too much yesterday.
A lot of it had to do with again the
changes that quarterback and then the changes elsewhere within the roster.
So personally, I didn't feel the need to ask about
Bernard Ryman or Quentin Nelson or other people that you
know are going to be who they've been the last
few years and are still in the prime of their careers.
But certainly a lot at stake for this team. And actually, Mark,
(55:24):
if you have it kind of queued up or can
get it cued up. I think one of the questions
that I threw at him and kind of Kevin reference
in the first hour. This to me sums up the
ballid experience because I asked him, when it comes to Anthony,
you all kind of flip flopped. Your playing with him starts,
(55:45):
it starts it. Here's what he had to say in
regard to why people should believe in that?
Speaker 3 (55:51):
Again, well, I don't quite.
Speaker 7 (55:53):
That's so you're really good asking questions because you always
get to why should people believe? I don't know how
answer why should people believe? Like, I think you know
the answer. They believe when you win. If you don't,
they don't believe. Like it wouldn't matter who's a quarterback.
They wouldn't believe if you didn't win, They're not going
to believe. If you win, they give you a little
(56:14):
more benefit of the doubt. And then y'all help put
doubt to make sure there's questions being asked. That's the
only way I know how to answer that one.
Speaker 8 (56:23):
Don't.
Speaker 7 (56:24):
I don't know what you want me to say.
Speaker 1 (56:26):
We just want to know what your thoughts are. That's
what we want.
Speaker 2 (56:30):
Yeah, And I think what he said was very fair
to some degree. And know some people might be saying, oh,
he didn't say anything, But the winning part is ultimately
what matters, man, And I can sit here on my
high horse and say, you know, I don't believe in
the planet you all have laid out. But I'll be
the same one having to e Crow if you went
out there and won with Daniel Jones. So I get
where he's coming from. But that's what happens when you
(56:53):
have sort of that hamster will of mediocrity. You don't
build enough I don't know if equity is the right way,
but enough trust within the fan base to say I'm
gonna do this and you should trust me, because the
trust that they've given you so far hasn't come with
fruitful results.
Speaker 3 (57:11):
They don't exactly.
Speaker 2 (57:13):
So that's my only thing is like, how do you
sell you know, the fan base, and really beyond that,
I mean, how do you tell your team this is
our plan? Like if you're the Forest Buckner or Quentin Nelson,
you've been there for years and years and you've been
playing at a high level and you don't see any
of that come to any collective tangible success, then it
might be harder for you, even as a professional athlete,
(57:34):
not to speak for them. I don't know what they
personally feel, but I imagine it could get a bit
frustrating to not have a chance to get into the
dance and play big games and you know, host a
playoff game, all those things that you want to do
throughout your career before it's over. Because, as we know football,
this game only lasts so long, you know. So they
have a chance to potentially, you know, get better this
year with Daniel Jones, that is a possibility, but they
(57:56):
have to deliver.
Speaker 5 (57:57):
I hated that comment he made about, well, the media
puts doubt so that the fans believed are the reason
they put doubt in the fans' minds. No, it's because
you're playing the shell game with the quarterback for another
year and everything. Right, look over here, here's our plan.
Oh wait, now it's over here. Now this is our plan.
Now it's over here, Like you keep changing the plan
and the destination of what you want the quarterback to be.
(58:18):
They spent the fourth overall pick on and now he's
entering year three and he's gonna hold the clipboard for
probably the majority of the season, barring Daniel Jones being
injured or just outright terrible. That's where the doubt comes
from and here fact that there's no faith in the
front office.
Speaker 1 (58:32):
This sounds obvious, but it's true. You want to get
people to start believing. I mean, it's an incredible opportunity
and it as unlikely Kevin as it sounds. Those first
three games Miami Denver, two teams that you were battling
with directly for a playoff spot less than a year ago. Denver.
Everybody's really high on them this year. They're supposed to
(58:53):
be a really good team. If two is playing his best,
people like the Miami Dolphins, and then a team that
you have trouble with all the time, Bonville. Those first
three weeks go two and one and three and zero
against those teams and look pretty good. You'll get the
people will start they want to believe, James, they want
to believe. You get those three games or two of
those three, people maybe start to believe, don't you think?
Speaker 2 (59:14):
Certainly? Certainly? And Mark, do you have our breaking news sounder?
Speaker 4 (59:20):
Oh the breaking news from ninety three five and one
oh seven to five the fan and this is actually
very serious.
Speaker 2 (59:28):
So the Washington Posts, one of their sports writers, Sam
forty A, just released the story at the top of
This Hour saying that NFL owner Jim Ersay secretly relapsed
got ketamine before quote luxury doctor. I mean, you got
ketemine from luxury doctor before death. And the cliff notes
that they've tweeted out says that Ersay and the Colts
(59:51):
execs misled the public. Ersay overdose three times between twenty
twenty and is made death and there are serious concerns
raised about his doctors. So that just dropped in the
Washington Post. It sounds like they were working on this
story for months, and so that will certainly be something
I have to follow up on and read later today.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
Well, I'm scrolling through. This is a long, long piece. Yeah, yeah,
two overdoses they're reporting twelve days right around that Steelers
game in twenty twenty three. Was that when we I
think I was right when remember like he was supposed
to do an appearance of the Gym Mersey Band Collection
or whatever it was called. They called the respiratory illness
(01:00:35):
and why he couldn't. He spent four months in the
hospital after that. M h m hmm.
Speaker 1 (01:00:40):
It's still sad, so sad.
Speaker 3 (01:00:44):
Tough man.
Speaker 1 (01:00:46):
Uh, all right, let's get the rest of the day's
news in as well as we scroll through that and
try to find out more from that. Here's what's happening
here and now.
Speaker 4 (01:00:55):
The Morning Checkdown on ninety sweet five and one oh
seven five.
Speaker 1 (01:01:00):
After that serious story is dropping, we will talk about
the Colts on the field, or at least at a
press conference with Chris Ballard yesterday Kevin Bowen a lot
of it just defending their decision to start Daniel Jones
and they have not given up on Anthony Richardson. No
real plan on what it is for Anthony Richardson going forward.
But was it just more of the same that we've
heard the last year and a half from Chris Ballard.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
Yeah, I think at this point there's only so much
you can say, and I thought that clip that we
just played probably summarizes it pretty well. They believe in
you if you win. If you don't, they don't, and
right now there's not enough winning to make people believe.
So that's where you're at. You know, some other kind
of branches of the again, positions of strength, trenches, wide, receiver,
(01:01:44):
tight end, so kind of hit on that, but yeah,
I know that's kind of the big stuff. And they
did make one waiver claim yesterday Chad Mumma, the linebacker
from the Jags claim Tim Smith's six round pick got
Alabama was Wave. We'll see if he gets on the
practice squad. But again, linebacker only four names as of yesterday,
so I think the thought was they would definitely go
(01:02:05):
out there and find a linebacker and some special team
snaps in his background former third round pick, so that's
where they are going.
Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
They did name their practice squad yesterday. Four notable names.
I'll tell you about Ulyssa Spentley and Khalil Herbert. To
running backs that'll be on the practice squad to start
things off this year. Chris Lamon's who I like a lot,
is a cornerback who will be on that practice squad.
And also coleman Owen, who raised a lot of eyebrows
in that third preseason game catching a bunch of passes
from Ridley Leonard and and everybody else that was playing
(01:02:35):
that game. He'll be around on the practice squad for
right now. Anybody else that was a surprise or expected
on that, James not really.
Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
I think a lot of it again just comes down
to how does it fluctu way over the next couple
of days, Because like I said earlier, you still got
a couple of spots up for grabs, and we will
see how the Colts see fits.
Speaker 3 (01:02:54):
He use them all right.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
Major League Baseball yesterday the Pirates of the Saint Louis
Cardinals two to one. Dodgers weep the Cincinnati Reds by
it's five to one. Who was I was trying to say,
are you going to abandon being a Reds fan?
Speaker 3 (01:03:07):
Are you going to abandon following this team?
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
The Red stink?
Speaker 4 (01:03:11):
It was time to you know, get.
Speaker 6 (01:03:15):
Out of there.
Speaker 3 (01:03:15):
That's a playoff r I'm gonna spend playing the hits.
At this point, I'm gonna spend it. I think it's healthy.
I don't think, honestly my sports life can have a
team in the month of September actually playing quality baseball.
Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
I got no one.
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
I feel like every sports fan has said this and
start manall coming up Sunday night. I don't have time
to be just living and dying with you know, the
eighth Inny bullpen, dude who just got called up in
the Louisville Bats trying to get you out of a jam.
That's not healthy. No one does sloppy seconds better than
the FC South preach, Kevin, I stand by that.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
The Reds were defeated by maybe the best player in baseball. Though,
show hey, o Tommy five innings, just two hits, two walks,
and nine strikeouts against the Reds. He's pretty good, oh Tommy. Also,
the Cubs getting clobbered by the San Francisco Giants twelve
to three, Kansas City did nearly the same to the
White Sox twelve to two was the final score there
(01:04:13):
over at Victory Field. Yes, the Pysons beat the Indianapolis
Indians six to three, but that wasn't the story at
Victory Field. Kevin, you're less than stellar critique of TJ
McConnell's first pich.
Speaker 3 (01:04:25):
Again, I thought, major credit to him for towing the rubber,
Major credit to him for taking the steps to practice
the first pitch. By all accounts, Scott Agnes will join
us here in a few to talk more about this.
Sounded like he practiced at the Saint Vincent Center. He
did not want to hop it, but that that pitch
was that almost missed the left side of the batter's box.
Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
The catcher got it fairly easy. That's all I can.
Speaker 2 (01:04:48):
All I'm saying is if we see Kevin Bowman throw
a first pitch in any straight down the center. Oh,
I will boo you live on this radio show. I
will be in there in person to record it and
boo you you Kevin.
Speaker 3 (01:05:00):
I think you can do it. Thanks.
Speaker 1 (01:05:02):
We got to get Kevin on the first pitch over there.
Speaker 3 (01:05:04):
On the matter, I feel like the show has really
turned into Jeff and I against James and Mark. Well,
that's a losing endeavor, brother, mm hmm. You guys are
on the wrong side of history there. Wow, I got
a side of the boss, or else I might not
be around you know what. Always were very smart.
Speaker 1 (01:05:19):
You know man.
Speaker 3 (01:05:20):
Or maybe I should do the Daniel Jones thing. Go
away for a few months and then people all of
a sudden they're like, ah, fourteen millions week, better, here
you go. You want some chapstick for all that ass
kissing you're doing? Right wow, Hey, we come.
Speaker 1 (01:05:35):
Back on the air.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
Those in the YouTube if you see some furniture moving, Hey,
I'm not involved.
Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
I'm going to go right down Kevin's wheelhouse right now.
Kegan Bradley names the Ryder Cup team yesterday he left
himself off the team. I thought a pretty selfless maneuver
right there, Kevin Bowen.
Speaker 3 (01:05:49):
The chapstick might be on Jeff's lips right there. Oh,
come on, I thought it was a joke. I thought
Keagan was an idiot for not picking himself. Keegan should
have picked himself. He's easily one of the best twelve
America over the last twelve months. He should be playing.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
Buy the fact that he says he's not playing his
best right now. Didn't you just get top five of
the two? Or that's my point. I'm just just a
lot of.
Speaker 3 (01:06:09):
Sam Burns look like me Sunday of the US Open.
I don't need to see sam Burns out there at
Beth Pitch. I want drama. If Keegan would have played
and won, he'd be one of the greatest Americans. Right
up there with Edison, Chestnut, Abe, Lincoln, Mlka, all of them.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
That's Kevin's. That's Kevin's Mount Rushmore right there, Keig and Bradley,
Joey Chestnut, and where the other two.
Speaker 3 (01:06:31):
You is Thomas Edison, Abe Lincoln and doctor Martin Luther
King Okay, and maybe Washington. I should probably add there. Boy,
this is a bigger Mount Rushmore than.
Speaker 1 (01:06:38):
I thought we're gonna get a statue of Kevin coming
out of the mountain, much like the other statue up there.
I like that, all right? Coming up in a minute,
we will switch gears. Scott Agnes will come by from
the Fieldhouse Files. We'll get the latest on Caitlin Clark
my cheap practice today we're hearing rumblings. We'll talk about that,
and maybe the latest on the Pacers as well. It's
(01:06:58):
right after this on ninety three five. Good morning, and
welcome into the Fan Morning Show. Along with Kevin Bowen,
James Boyd, I'm jeff Rickard, Mark Dyton with us as well.
Bombshell report from the Washington Post this morning. Colts owner
Jim Irsay spent his final years in the throes of
a relapse that was hidden from the public. We'll talk
more about that coming in a few minutes. We're all
reading through it and getting more details as we speak.
(01:07:21):
But scheduled to join us at this time. One of
our favorites, Scott Agnes from the Fieldhouse Files on the
Payless Lookers Hotline, is here to talk a little bit
more about the Indiana Fever. Coming off a big win
at home the other night against Seattle, getting ready to
go on the road, take on the Sparks, a team
that currently is on the outside looking in and chasing
the fever in the playoff spot, and of course, the
(01:07:41):
never ending questions about the health of Caitlin Clark. Good morning,
Scott Agnes, and welcome to the show. How are you
doing this morning.
Speaker 6 (01:07:47):
I'm good morning.
Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 6 (01:07:49):
Doing just fine.
Speaker 1 (01:07:49):
How about you, guys, We're doing very well. Is today
the day that Caitlin Clark gets the practice jersey on
and makes it up and down the floor with their teammates.
Speaker 6 (01:07:58):
Yeah, I would expect that they're out in LA and
we'll get the practice in out there, and they were
able to enjoy yesterday off. But I would guess if
you're Caitlin and you're chomping to get back to it,
I'm sure you were in the gym and getting a
workout session in as well. So you're talking about maybe
Jeff after today, she would have at least three, maybe
(01:08:22):
four workout sessions in and in getting to a number
in a number of situations where I think Stephanie White
would be comfortable continuing to move forward with all this,
And so I think that's the best thing because obviously
there's not much time left. You have four to the
next five games on the road in just six games
(01:08:44):
left total, and so clock is ticking. But I think
there's an opportunity right here for her to return, and
it would probably be early next week.
Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
Scott, I don't care about Kaitlyn Clark. I care about TJ. McConnell.
Speaker 1 (01:08:57):
Knight.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
You were boots on the Brown, tell me all about
it that the crowds looked a massive last night of
Victory Field for the backup point guard.
Speaker 6 (01:09:06):
Yeah, Kb, I think it was an overwhelming success. As
TJ came out, they played a minute long montage on
the giant video board and I just looked around, panned
around the stadium. It was all TJ in Pacer fans.
It was remarkable. Let's go back to before gates open.
(01:09:26):
Half an hour before that, there had to be hundreds
at least outside of the Victory Field gates. Then they
open up the gates and TJ's going was signing in
the outfield, so kind of right where everybody came in.
And I kid you not, within two minutes there was
a line kind of down and back that was already
(01:09:47):
sneaking in just two minutes and something you just don't hear. Ever,
he set his sign for about a half an hour.
The line was so long that it looked like there
was no progress made that he goes, all, right, after
I throw out the first pitch, I'll come back and
sign more autographs, and he did for another half an hour.
(01:10:08):
There was supposed to be kb A pushing for him
at the bottom of the second inning. He was still
signing autographs even then. So I think he was a
massive success and more than anything, I think sometimes in
a giant field house, it's hard to understand maybe the
fandom or whoevery WANs and of course you have your
superstar PU.
Speaker 9 (01:10:28):
Look, TJ is a.
Speaker 6 (01:10:30):
Role player, crushes that role in his fan base. I mean,
they really rallied around him, and it was and it
was remarkable too for me to see the demographics of
fans just ranged entirely. There was there was adults, there
was there was young kids. Uh. There was one guy
that said, yeah, I drove four hours from Kentucky to CTJ, so, uh,
(01:10:54):
you saw everything last night, and I thought it was
it went over really well.
Speaker 1 (01:10:57):
So you're proving my theory. Mark Dyke in the TJ
McConnell in this town is just as popular as blue.
Speaker 3 (01:11:02):
He is among adult males. I would wholeheartedly agree.
Speaker 2 (01:11:05):
So, Scott, I know you do a lot of serious supporting,
but you know, along those same lines, I see here
that you said there was a slam dunk contest on
a mini hoop the out Hustle TJ in Great Cliffs
style cam with photos of him.
Speaker 3 (01:11:20):
So, yeah, of those three, which one are? Which one
are you?
Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
Because I would love see in a mini hoop dunk
contest myself. But can you explain what the out Hustle
TJ events or theme was?
Speaker 6 (01:11:36):
Yeah, so those didn't really involve him more just the themes,
but they were they were really fun. And again the
first one he was supposed to judge the slam dunk contest,
but he was still signing autographs when that happened, so
he was not You would not want me in these
slam dunk contests. I'm much like Tye and such. I
(01:11:57):
much rather pass than set up the basket. But in
terms of the outrun him, it was kind of cool.
They set up like a digital Ooh, I'm gonna get
yelled at like a tech techmo or whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
Okay, that was a digital version.
Speaker 6 (01:12:11):
On the outfield wall. I think it's left field and
an individual tried to out race that character. So that's
what that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
Oh okay, I gotcha, I gotcha. This is like in baseball?
Is that the mister freezer?
Speaker 6 (01:12:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
Yeah, gotcha? Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:12:33):
Well, on a more serious note, because I could talk
about this all day seriously with your Scott, but looking
at the fever, huge win obviously over the Seattle Storm
to put themselves in a great position down a stretch
here when we look at the playoff picture, what do
you think this team has shown despite all of the injuries,
yet they're still in this position to make the playoffs
(01:12:56):
for a second consecutive year.
Speaker 6 (01:12:58):
I think they've shown exactly what they're made of. And
I think all these hardships pun intended here, with all
the hardship contracts, I think it's shown how close they are.
Speaker 1 (01:13:09):
And I mean just you're watching.
Speaker 6 (01:13:11):
The middle of these games and several of them are
not a team at the moment because they had surgery
and their life tweeting or hey I love these girls,
or hey that's you know whatever throughout the game or after.
Speaker 1 (01:13:23):
A big play or whatever.
Speaker 6 (01:13:25):
I think this is hardened this group because all they
have is each other as they see one player after
and you almost go down in this trying season unlike
any we've seen before, and so they realize there's a
lot of doubt that what they can do or who's
available and such, and all we keep seeing is is
(01:13:45):
players from the outside shut again that it's all about
fitting opportunity. Right. Erry McDonald was phenomenal and unfortunately she's out,
and Odyssey Simms is the latest in that situation coming
you know, was a is a veteran came in has
played her role in the last game. For example, you
see here chipping twenty two points as a starting point
(01:14:10):
guard while the team keeps their turnovers to twelve. I
think that's been fantastic no matter who they're playing there.
And the fact there's sixth and certainly vying for a
playoff spot despite Caitlin only playing in about a dozen
games this season is incredible. And so overall, I think
you've just seen at a lot of culture being established
(01:14:34):
I think by this front office, by the coaching staff,
and then this players. They've just made the most of
their opportunity.
Speaker 3 (01:14:40):
Can Scott agnesfield house files you can find his work
he's with the year on the Payless Slickers hotline. Scott,
We're about six days remove from the story about Mike Winer,
Rick Carlisle. I guess you'd call him maybe his top assistant.
Mutually parting ways, and I thought the press release, and
I mean, you've read plenty of mutually parting ways press
release is in your day, that one was one of
(01:15:02):
the more complimentary ones that I've ever read. Steven Simon
went to Twitter and called Mike Winer a rock star
and I don't know. I read it and it didn't
scream to me at all. This guy is just going
got a better job offer somewhere else. And honestly, when
I read it, I'm like, boy, I hope everything's okay
with Mike Winer and his family a month out from
the start of training camp. Anymore, that you have found
(01:15:25):
out about Mike Winer and leaving the Pacers about a
month before the start of the season.
Speaker 6 (01:15:30):
Yeah, I would agree with what you said there, starting
with the press release in that and I even noted
this in my story that the press release for him
to them having this parting of ways longer than one
like three days earlier, about celebrating Rick Carlyle being signed
to this contract extension, which is obviously a huge success
in celebration, and so instead of just being a one
(01:15:52):
or two liner, No, they wanted to take a long
time with this, and clearly Rick Carlisle wanted to share
a lot to make sure to emphasize his contratributions and
him being a winner. But right now, no, nothing more
has emerged from this situation. I know it was a
challenging finished for him family wise over the last several
(01:16:12):
months and in the last this past season, but there
was no indication in my mind and from what I
had heard, that that this might head this way or
anything like this. But right now it does seem more
perhaps like a family and personal decision for him to
to not be with the team this year.
Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
Scott, thanks for stopping by. We always appreciate that you
have to come in some morning when you're downtown, have
you It'll be fun all right getting that.
Speaker 3 (01:16:41):
I appreciate you waking up for the show. You can
do it from you from home. I think Mark Dyton
wakes him up.
Speaker 1 (01:16:50):
Thanks Scott, you bet, thank you? There you go? Yeah
that that little laugh set everything, didn't it?
Speaker 9 (01:16:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
Ain't no bad sounded like Kawhi Leonard laugh at his
open Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
Nothing's like Kawhi Leonard of that that press cars. That's
the best. That is the best, all right. Coming up
in a moment, bombshell report out of the Washington Post
about the final years of the life of Jim Mersay
and how it was was riddled with apparently a doctor
give him a lot of opioids and things of that nature, ketamine,
And we've got a response from the family for the
(01:17:23):
first time this morning. WTHR got one of those. We'll
talk about it next as we continue on ninety three
five and one oh seven five. The Fan, I hope
you're doing well this morning. It is Thursday. The Indianapolis
Colts had their press conference, their annual press conference with
Chris Ballard after the announcement of their fifty three man
roster following waiver pickups. Waiver claims those kinds of things
(01:17:46):
and putting a practice squad together, but that's not our focus.
All of a sudden this morning here at ninety three
five and one o seven five, the fan James you
had had mentioned earlier you saw on your feed and
brought up the fact that there's a very long piece
in the Washington Post this morning that details the final
few years and months of the life of jim Irsay,
and it paints a picture of opioid and ketamine addiction
(01:18:08):
and one of those luxury doctors that was all too
willing to help him out with that stuff down towards
the end.
Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
Yeah, very thorough report, and I would certainly encourage you all,
if you're interested, of course, to read that after our show.
But from what I've gathered so far, it is a
very thorough report and it kind of just speaks to
what we I think all know if you have struggled,
or if you know somebody in your life we have
struggle with addiction, is that it is a lifelong thing.
Speaker 3 (01:18:36):
It is something that you have to take serious.
Speaker 2 (01:18:38):
And I, personally what extend a lot of grace toward
jim Irsay or others who might have gone through those
types of things.
Speaker 1 (01:18:47):
I would agree I find the whole thing incredibly sad,
and I also angered a little bit by the fact
that there are people like this doctor out there that
will continue to give addicts what they need in a
way that just shouldn't happen. I mean, I'm more angry
at that at the doctors than anything else.
Speaker 3 (01:19:06):
Yeah, I definitely want to make sure I go through
and and read it pretty thoroughly before I comment to
too much, but certainly echo the addiction aspect of it.
It's it's horrifying to see what what can happen to
people that are battling that, and you know, unfortunately it
was something that lived with Jim irsay for obviously his
(01:19:27):
his entire life, and you know, I think we all
could see the lack of public appearances from him in
the final couple of years of his life. There was
a ton going on behind the scenes, and you know
the overdoses that this article reports of, and that you
know late in that twenty twenty three calendar year, we
remember that, you know, the nine to one one call
from his home and Carmel all of that. So yeah,
(01:19:51):
it's very very detailed here, and you know, I think
some of this generally you don't almost read it and
be like, yeah, that doesn't like shock me, you know
when you read some of that, sadly, because again a
guy that is wanting to be so front facing and
out there in the public, and you know, think about it,
(01:20:12):
that twenty twenty three season had the biggest game inside
of Lucas Oil Stadium, and you know, maybe ten years,
eight years something like that, and he wasn't there. You know,
that probably told you everything you needed to know about
where he was from a health standpoint. So, you know,
continue thoughts the with the Erste family and losing their dad.
Speaker 1 (01:20:30):
Well, hear this over and over again too, and it
comes to mind. You think of the Michael Jackson situation,
you think of the Matthew Perry situation, and I'm not
completely clear on the details of the print situation, but
I think it was kind of like that too. And
now Jim Rsey that they find these quote unquote luxury
doctors that are willing to prescribe them the opioids and
the ketamine and knowing that these guys are addicted to it,
I see no possible positive outcome from any of that,
(01:20:53):
and I hope that they all get what's coming to him.
To be honest with you, James.
Speaker 2 (01:20:57):
Yeah, I have no opinion on that because it hasn't
been brought forth legally, so I will just read the
story and.
Speaker 1 (01:21:08):
God just my general opinion on those kinds of things
that happen is what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (01:21:13):
Yeah, And I don't have an opinion on it.
Speaker 1 (01:21:15):
I do want to read some of the statement that
the Ursay family did put out. We continue to greet
the loss of our data man defined not only by
his role as owner of the Cults, but also by
his resilience, his personal struggles, and his deep love for family, friends,
and community. Throughout his life, our dad was open about
his battles with addiction and mental health. He never claimed
(01:21:36):
to be perfect. Instead, he used his voice to reduce
stigma and advocate for those facing similar challenges with the honesty, vulnerability,
and compassion. We understand the public interest in his life
and legacy. While we respect the role of responsible journalism,
we declined to comment on the allegations in your inquiry.
This is what they said to the Post initially. The
media is not the place to address inquiries about information
(01:21:59):
which is disputed, lacks of essential context, or involves private
and medical matters. Our focus remains on honoring our dad's legacy,
his decades of philanthropy, his loyalty to the Cults and
its fans, and his passion for mental health, advocacy, music
and second chances. So again, story in the Washington Post
this morning quite lengthy if you had a chance to
read the whole thing yet.
Speaker 2 (01:22:19):
James, I have not been alive on near with you all,
but I have been reading through it, and certainly we'll
probably read through it a couple of times to make
sure that I just understand the scope of what's going
on and what they reported. And I do believe and
obviously we know the merit of the Washington Post and
where they kind of stand in the journalism world. So
when they report something, it has certainly been vetted thoroughly.
Speaker 3 (01:22:43):
Get enough for the Boss tea shirts, I believe on
every seat. Speaking of honoring Jim Mersey week one, he'll
go in the Ring of Honor. That's part of a
week from Sunday inside of Lucas Oil Stadium, and I
believe every person in attendance will get those T shirts there.
That's say for the Boss and James. You know, when
we've been around the Colts here for the last few weeks,
(01:23:03):
I mean there's at least a player or a staff
member somebody seemingly every day is wearing something related to
the Jim RSA. Yeah, as rocks the j I have
the segnature. I see the weightlifting shirt A lot with
guys in the locker room of Jim Mercy back in
his weightlifting days there. So yeah, in in different ways, certainly,
(01:23:25):
they are trying to continue to live on his legacy
and honor him.
Speaker 1 (01:23:30):
So that's what's going on this morning, and we will
continue to talk about the Coltspitzel. So we've got college
football tonight, guys, college football t big time college football,
Top twenty five matchup. Boise State's going to be involved,
but throughout the entire weekend. I think, Kevin, you're aware
that there's a bunch of top twenty five games coming
up this weekend, are you not?
Speaker 3 (01:23:47):
Yeah? I yes, I can't wait. I think it's one
of the best opening weekends frankly we've ever had. But
I don't know if you guys came across yet the
leak Horso ESPN trip Have you ever seen that yet?
I did online there, Yeah, so I think I assume
they will play that during College Game Day coming up
on Saturday. So the final college game Day with Lee Corso.
(01:24:09):
What a legend Ohio State and Texas And basically I
won't give too many details, but to summarize the tribute video,
they did pretty much a video montage with Lee in
a theater kind of dim lights, picture him in a
theater watching said montage video, and it begins with, you know,
all these major college football people in the video just
(01:24:30):
basically saying thank you to him for the first two
three minutes. Actually, I one of the things I was
struck by was Brian Kelly had a comment where one
thing he loved, one of the many things he loved
about Lee Corso was Lee always wanted to be on
the sidelines watching games. It's funny. I can't tell you
how many times I remember watching the college football game
(01:24:50):
and you know, player gets tackled on the sidelines and
I'm like, there's Courso there. He is, like watching the
game from the sidelines. You know, if he wanted to,
he could probably be up there in some very nice,
sweet situation, you know, closed booth and controlled climate. But
the coach and him always wanted to be on the sideline.
So you had I think Andrew Luck what made a cameo.
Drew Brees had a cameo saying one of the goals
(01:25:11):
when he was at Purdue was to get him to
put on the Purdue Pete hat, which Corso did one time.
Then it goes to his children and his grandchildren, and
this is when Lee gets very, very emotional. And then
it ends with kirkurb Street really just bawling, frankly.
Speaker 1 (01:25:27):
And it came almost like the sun to him.
Speaker 3 (01:25:30):
Right in kind of the final thirty forty five seconds.
And you know, if anybody has watched College Game Day lately,
tragically it's kind of turned into Yeah, herb Street is
kind of helping Lee through the show. Is almost how
I have observed it over the years, which is hard
to watch, frankly. But then the lights come on and
Kirk kurb Street is in the theater with Corso and
(01:25:52):
they just have a heartfelt and Lee just says thank
you to him. So I assume they will play that
video coming up during College Game Day on Saturday. But yeah,
I mean three top ten games speaks for itself. But honestly,
watching Game Day one final time with Corso something that
I can't wait.
Speaker 1 (01:26:08):
All Right, we'll talk about all that coming up at
a moment. Tom Dinert stops by as we continue on
a Thursday morning at ninety three five one oh seven.
Here we are fully of the week one. The college
football season got a top twenty five matchup later on tonight,
A couple of three what three top ten matchups coming
up over the weekend. Kevin Bowen, I'm looking forward to it.
IU gets back on the field, Perdue gets back on
(01:26:29):
the field, and I cannot wait. We go to the
Payless Liquers hotline right now we talk to our next
guest who knows all about these things. Tom Deanert from
monthree dot com kind enough to join us here on
the Fan Morning Show. It is that time of year.
Are you ready for some football? My friend?
Speaker 9 (01:26:46):
I am c the what Hank Williams Junior. I guess
so much speculation, conjecture, what ifs talk talk talk? We're
finding gonna see some action here, So I can't wait
for high on Saturdy Oben ross A.
Speaker 3 (01:27:01):
Tom, if you don't mind, I kind of want to
go into the Devin Mockaby story. I was talking to
one of my buddies, is a big Purdue football fan
the other day. I had almost forgotten that maccabee stayed.
You know, so much of the team is obviously gone,
and so much of the headline guys went to. Frankly,
some Marquis schools in the transfer portal. If we haven't
maybe been glued to the maccaby story over the years.
(01:27:24):
Why has he chosen to stay through all of this,
because I think a lot of athletes in his position
in today's world of college football would have been gone.
Speaker 9 (01:27:34):
Yeah, we sort of taken for granted at this point,
all the drama, all the roster tumult that took place
after the season their said Devin Mockaby right with waiting
patiently see the head coach was going to be no
hasty moves and had to sit down with with coqotam
and and I tell you that we asked him about
(01:27:54):
this over the winner and I think even shortly after
he decided he was going to stay, was he really
wants a Predue engineering degree. I think he's sincere about that.
And if you talk to him at all, you know
he's really into his car mechanics and uh and it
came to PU to be an engineer, and he wants
to be a Purdue engineer. So I think that's a
big part of it. I think he realizes the legacy
(01:28:15):
he's guy here too. With a good season, I think
close to twelve hundred yards rushing could leave here as
all time leadion Rusher. So you know, it's setting up
well for Devin Mockaby. He's become a beloved figure. I'll
be honest with you, just because he did decide to stay. Well,
so many players left you're talking about will help going
to Clemson, you know, and just on and one ago
(01:28:35):
it's dealing theme and going out to Oregon and uh.
But but you know what, Devin Mockaby stayed and he
has a chance to be the centerpiece of this offense
this year.
Speaker 3 (01:28:44):
I'll tell you what I feel like that is proof
that God has favorites.
Speaker 2 (01:28:48):
Because you're telling me you're playing Big ten football and
you want to get an engineering degree.
Speaker 3 (01:28:53):
What do you mean like they one or the other?
Speaker 2 (01:28:56):
Young man football exactly? Know that is that is awesome
And so I do want to pivot a bit here too.
You know, got a new coach in town. How has
Barry Odom sort of injected a sense of confidence or
a certain standard with this team? Because we know obviously
you're gonna be judged by wins and losses. So in
his mind or what'd you been able to gather what
(01:29:16):
do you think will define success for this team this year?
Speaker 9 (01:29:20):
You know, if you believe las Vegas. I think the
over under win total was three and a half for Purdue.
It probably sounds about the spot on, honestly, three and nine,
four and eight, But and in a lot of ways,
I'm not sure you can totally judge the team just
on the win total. I know that sounds silly to
say that's really what matters at the end of the day,
But given what produce is coming off of, I think
(01:29:41):
that one and eleventh season not just a one and
eleven season, but a disastrous one and eleven season, and
solt for do not to lose, but often losing spectacular fashion.
So get your wins, get your three to four wins,
but also be competitive, right, don't don't embarrass the university.
Look organized, look buttoned up, look well co especially against
(01:30:01):
your peer programs, right. I mean, you're gonna have Misigan,
Ohio State the heavyweights, and Notre Dame Piers not gonna
have much of a chance to match up with. But
the other peer programs, that's for peer's got to show
the stuff, be competitive and win some of those games too.
Speaker 1 (01:30:16):
Tom Dianar joining us on the payless Liquers hotline. Right now,
what would you say a successful season for Purdue would
look like at the end of the year.
Speaker 9 (01:30:24):
Yeah, again, a lot of that. Uh what I recap?
I think you know, I'm a win loss standpoint three
and nine, four and eight. You know, these first two games.
You hate to call the first two games of a
season must win games, but I'm gonna go in and
call them must win games for Purdue. They got ball
staying here Saturday, and then they've got seven Illinois coming
in the next week for a night game. Per's got
(01:30:46):
to win both those games. You need the momentum, we
need the confidence. You need the wins because the lifting
gets a lot heavier from there on out. You know,
USC comes here, so pre opens are three home games
and the Trojans coming. Guys, that could be very a fun,
interesting game, right produced two and oh here comes do
I see all the way from the West Coast to
Westlafia for a three o'clock kickoff. We on on Lincoln
(01:31:09):
rallies on the hot seat. We on a lot of
times the West Coast teams struggle. I'm an East so
I'm not saying it, but you never know. It could
be kind of a fun afternoon. But again, you gotta
be two and no I mean, look at the rest
of the schedule, right, they have Rutgers for homecoming. I
think that's when you probably get there. At Northwestern, I
think that's why probably has to win as well. And
(01:31:30):
you know Indiana, Illinois and now so on the top
twenty five teams, they got to go to Minnesota, that's stuff.
You got to go to Washington to play Ryan Walters.
That could be tough. So I think I see upwards
to four winds on now on that roster, if I
if I look closely enough and squint my eyes.
Speaker 3 (01:31:45):
Tom d Hart, the voice right there on the Paylos
Stickers hot line covering Purdue for on three, Tom, I
think you know a large chunk of our audience certainly
recalls the Tyler Trent story. It was one of the
more moving stories that we've seen here locally and quite
some time. Obviously, everything around that Ohio State game and
then sadly died of bone cancer that next year. But
(01:32:07):
that story seems to be again alive with his brother,
Ethan Trent, who I believe is going to start on
the offensive line for the Boilers. Could you share a
little bit more on that story.
Speaker 9 (01:32:22):
Unbelievable and then just incredible that Tyler Trent's story has
another chapter to it. Here comes Ethan Trent. Do you
guys remember back in twenty eighteen they brought Tyler up
to football games and there was this kind of little
chubby kid pushing Ethan in the wheelchair, sorry, pushing Tyler
in the wheelchairs. It was Ethan Trent. And now he's
your full grown obviously a red shirt, red shirt sophomore's
(01:32:45):
third year Purdue committed to Indiana State out of Carmel,
got to walk on offer to Produce who came here
and this is his third year on campus, and you're right,
he's he's going to start a right guard. I'm pretty
sure of that, and just not just a blossoming football player,
but just just a great young man. We had a
(01:33:05):
chance to talk to him several times. We did again yesterday,
and I'm just blown away. Guys, for somebody to be
so young and seeming to be so mature and and
have their life and order just really impresses me when
I think whereund when I think where I was at
as a twenty year old to produce, So he's gonna
be a fun guy to watch. Number seventy six, and
you're gonna hear that story be told every time produce
(01:33:26):
on television a million times. Ethan said he at first
he kind of shrinked from that, wanting to be in
the spotlight because of it. He says, now he embraces it.
So it's gonna be fun of watching him this year
and continue to hear his story.
Speaker 2 (01:33:38):
Yeah, to kind of pickyback off of that. I'm reading
the quote here from him and you're in the story
by your colleague Dub Jealouson and he was saying, how
you know he felt a bit ashamed. He says, I
was ashamed because I just didn't want to be in
his shadow while I was here. In a way, that
is a lot of pressure for a young person to
face when your brother is such a prominent figure for
(01:34:00):
positive reasons, obviously, but you want to be your own person.
So how have you seen him kind of you know,
maybe not carry that grief is like a like a
like a tag or something like that in a way.
Obviously it's always there, But how have you seen him
kind of, you know, come in life and be his
own person and maybe not have to be the first
thing come in to mind people think of him.
Speaker 9 (01:34:20):
I think just I think it comes from from the
way he carries himself.
Speaker 8 (01:34:24):
You know, he.
Speaker 9 (01:34:26):
He's growing up obviously. I think he's realized, you know,
the hea can do your notch as a football player.
But and then other aspects of his life as well.
So and he, like I said, he's a kid that
and then it has all this priority priorities strand I
know he's a very popular teammate as well. It was
a lot of fun to spring to see him get
(01:34:47):
rewarded a scholarship by Barry old I mean he and
Ethan Trent sort of the count on a story for
us when when Olden first got here, he wanted to
sit down meeting with with with Burial and just just
tell coach, I mean, give me a chance. All that
want is a chance. Let me show you what I
can do. And barryms that kind of guy, and here
we are. He earns a scholarship in the spring, and
(01:35:09):
now we've been transpoised to start on the offensive line
on saddling.
Speaker 1 (01:35:13):
Outstanding story, outstanding stuff. And we look forward to the
build up of Purdue football and may it starts this
week against the ball State. So thanks for stopping by time.
We appreciate it as.
Speaker 9 (01:35:23):
Always finally here. Thanks for having me fellas always.
Speaker 1 (01:35:26):
Tom Dean art from on threes dot com Sports And yeah,
there are some interesting storylines for Purdue this year. How
much better can they get and how quickly can they
get those to those strides?
Speaker 2 (01:35:36):
James, Yeah, I'm looking forward to Tom covering a loss
for the Purdue moiler Makers against Illinois Saturday, October fourth,
Which isn't big talk.
Speaker 1 (01:35:44):
I mean, stopping you're going?
Speaker 3 (01:35:47):
How is that trash talk at too? He's gonna be
favored by like three or four touchdowns. I'm just saying,
he's saying Indiana's taking an l.
Speaker 2 (01:35:56):
Mark is getting the belt put on them. Everybody, and
you can't name five guys that play, That's not the point.
I can name five bills I get from them monthly.
But no, I am excited. In all seriousness, I think
the story of you know, Ethan Trent is one where
you can certainly have a lot of respect and amoration
for a kid that's been through a lot and obviously
(01:36:17):
has built a name for himself and build up up
to being a good football player. Because I don't care
what team it is in the Big Ten, if you're starting,
you can play football at a pretty high level.
Speaker 5 (01:36:26):
Jills Boyd a school of journalism that should be at Champagne,
Illinois right now.
Speaker 3 (01:36:30):
Yeah, how he builds you go?
Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
You know, I'm thinking about going back Mark and I'm
gonna look around and be like, oh, these buildings should
be named after me.
Speaker 3 (01:36:37):
I still cannot believe this. CBS Sports mock Draft and
Mike Renner is a name that, like, I definitely know
in the draft community. This is not just some random
dude that puts out mock drafts, but he puts out
one yesterday that has Indiana quarterback for Nando Mendoza going
number one overall in the twenty twenty six mock draft.
(01:37:01):
Here he writes this, Mendoza feels like the best fit
of the bunch. He's got the Browns with the number
one pick. No shock there for Kevin Stefanski. He's got
a plus NFL arm paired with quick decision making, tight
window accuracy. He'll get a chance to shine on a
bigger stage this year in Indiana after carrying Cal the
past two seasons. Render doesn't write this, but Mendoza six
five two twenty five, and by all accounts, the guy
(01:37:23):
can scoot a little bit. Here so there's that element
to his game. I just what a time to be alive?
Where how cool would that IU football has a guy
that's being mocked number one overall And I'm sure this
time last year you could show me like a Riley
Leonard mocked in the first round of a draft. So
(01:37:43):
I get that it's a little bit crazy, But wasn't
that the definition of AU football last year? I mean,
the IU football story last year is one of the
greatest college stories you'll ever see. The most losing program
in college football history, bringing in this cocky, brash coach
and all of his you know JMU dudes and just
(01:38:06):
thrashing team after team after team and making the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:38:10):
Can you imagine if they do it two years in
a round?
Speaker 4 (01:38:12):
Now?
Speaker 1 (01:38:13):
I know, can you imagine mark Indiana football in the
college football playoff two consecutive seasons?
Speaker 5 (01:38:19):
Be something I don't think I've ever seen in my lifetime.
That would be nice to see that constant success for
IU football, which has not existed.
Speaker 3 (01:38:27):
And again Nick Saban voice, are you a program? That's
the question?
Speaker 6 (01:38:32):
Now?
Speaker 3 (01:38:33):
Was it the one hit wonder or are you a program?
Speaker 8 (01:38:36):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:38:36):
A At the end of that build, if you want
to go back a few years. You do your Sabing voice, Mark,
come on now.
Speaker 5 (01:38:42):
Built a program. I got my doctor Prepper right here.
We're going ou out Wooden football games. That's what we're
gonna do.
Speaker 3 (01:38:48):
Twenty two and a half, twenty three and a half
point favorite Indiana over Old Dominion coming up Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (01:38:54):
And it'll be interesting to see because we've seen a
couple of years of recent success. I know that they
that Tom Allen was never really able to build on
that one exciting year when when everybody was getting excited
about IU and that didn't happen. But I think we're
learning now that with what with Tom Allen did that
one year and granted it's only one year for Kurtzignetty,
but it is possible to find success at Indiana at
(01:39:16):
this point.
Speaker 3 (01:39:17):
Well, and from an alumni based standpoint, From an nil
I mean, by all accounts for Nana Mendoza is making
a healthy chunk of change, probably close to three million dollars.
Speaker 1 (01:39:25):
So you know, I say he does no bills to
Illinois is what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (01:39:28):
Probably not so I think I use got some funding
if they're able to, you know, create solid ground here
and stretch it a couple of more years. Getting back
to the Chris Boward thing for a second, James, I
know you're going to scoot over to a Colt's practice
here coming up at ten am the Alex Smith comp.
If we had a drinking game yesterday and you had
Alex Smith on your bingo board, you might be hungover
(01:39:50):
till Saturday with how many Alex Smith name drops we got. Honestly,
Chris Baward used him in referenced to Anthony Richardson as
long term and short term for Daniel Jones. Alex Smith
got a lot of love yesterday from the Colt GM,
which more is realistic Alex Smith in the short term
being applicable to Daniel Jones, or Alex Smith in the
(01:40:11):
long term being applicable to Anthony Richardson. That's a great question.
Speaker 2 (01:40:16):
It might be the latter, assuming that Anthony would then
change franchises. But to be fair at a ballad, I
had to go back and look the two thousand and
five to five but two thousand and five and he
was benched multiple times early in his career, and ultimately
they got a coaching change in there and they were
able to go to the playoffs years after he had
(01:40:38):
been drafted as the number one quarterback, so he found
success there after being benched multiple times. So there is
an example there of it kind of working out with
the same franchise. And I even went back further Kevin
where the only other one I could find, And again
there is no official like statless for this, but Terry
(01:40:58):
Bradshaw was the other one I found that was and
I'm one pick I believe back in nineteen seventy that
bitch multiple times as a rookie early in his career
and obviously went on to win four Super Bowls, Hall
of Fame career, YadA, YadA, yadas. So those are the
two that I found, Alex Smith and Terry Bradshaw, where
a player that was drafted that high at that position
was bench twice early on with that franchise, and it
(01:41:21):
still worked out with the same team. But obviously two
times in the last fifty years probably isn't the greatest
track record for Anthony, but that's why I think if
it were to work out, most times, as we've seen,
especially as of late, it's usually with a different team.
So I would go with Anthony and the Alex Smith
comp the second time with him moving on.
Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
Yeah, I'd probably go the reverse. I'd probably go and
not love me be very clear, I don't think either
are very likely. But if I had to pick one
or the other, I'd probably picked Daniel Jones in the
short term. I mean you just pointed out two times
in fifty years. Yeah, that to me, just said that
was almost a drop of the Mike moment.
Speaker 2 (01:41:57):
And if Anthony moved on to a different teams at
rates a little bit higher, I would think if that happens,
But yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:42:03):
You know, if you want to, And we talked about
this a little bit earlier in the show. In all
likely though, this is the best skill group that Daniel
Jones has had in his NFL career by far. Yeah,
I mean any offensive line.
Speaker 2 (01:42:16):
So even though they've made changes Kevin, I still think
he probably has a better chance. I mean, the guy
got sacked one of those years. It might have been
like eighty times.
Speaker 3 (01:42:22):
So that aspect to me thinks, Okay, if Gardner Minshew
was a throwaway from getting the Colts in the playoffs,
could Daniel Jones do that? Yeah, I mean like that
to me seems plausible, more plausible than the Anthony richards
and Daniel Jones comp. Because when you get into an
excuse me to Alex Smith Anthony Richardson comp. When you
(01:42:44):
get into that aspect to it. Again, I've said this
before about Anthony Richardson, and there's nobody to say it
without it coming as off as harsh. He's never played
good football in his career. For longer than a month,
Alex Smith was a Heisman Trophy finalist. Did you guys
remember Alex with at Utah there's original number, was balling
(01:43:05):
that final season the Fiesta Bowl when all of it.
Speaker 1 (01:43:07):
He's also a guy I point out as I covered
that Utah team, I was in Salt Lake City and
I got to know, believe it or not, Urban Meyer
and and Alex a little bit on the periphery there
just being around him every week. Incredibly smart dude too,
and mentally tough. I mean, as we saw when it
has comeback from that incredibly for sure, harsh broken leg,
but that a lot. Got graduated with an engineering degree
(01:43:30):
in three years. I think it was engineering whatever the
degree was, three year But point my point is that
not only was he balling and was a Heisman candidate,
but there was this mental fortitude about him that if
you were around him, you started a sense and no,
and just he was a guy I always talk about
loving the game of football, like if there, I can't
(01:43:51):
even imagine doing anything else with my life. Ever, Alex
Smith was also one of those guys early in his
career too.
Speaker 3 (01:43:56):
And Chris Ballard I think indirectly hit on that several
different times yesterday. So again, I don't think and I'll
just add one more point to it again. If I
had to pick, you know, Smith in the short term
for Daniel Jones or Smith in the long term, Ranthey Richardson,
I would pick the short term. But what did Kansas
City do? They realized there was a ceiling there and
(01:44:20):
they traded up from twenty seven to ten to draft
Patrick Mahomes. So or twenty seven twelve I think it was.
I mean, that is a huge trade up to get
away from Alex Smith, to realize, hey, at some point
we need a dude at quarterback, not just a whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:44:41):
He makes a really good quarterback in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:44:43):
He was not your I would say he was a
good quarterback. I don't want to give it a little
bit more than that.
Speaker 1 (01:44:48):
I go short of being when I think of like Mahomes,
Jackson Allen. Those are great quarterbacks I think, and and look,
even a couple of those guys still have to get
further than where they've gotten. But my point is he
was a core back that if you had everything else
on your team, you're like, yeah, that guy can take us.
Speaker 9 (01:45:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:45:03):
So I guess I just bring that up to say,
even if Daniel Jones reaches an Alex Smith type of
Kansas City year for you, you still have to look
very long and hard into the mayor and say, you
know what those quarterbacks get you where if our goal
is the top of the mountain top and to me,
that means Fernandal Mendoz In the twenty twenty sixth draft,
(01:45:25):
according to Mike Greenner, number one pick Indiana University Football.
Speaker 1 (01:45:30):
Let's hope and hope it goes that way. Mark, Let's
check it down.
Speaker 4 (01:45:35):
The Morning Checkdown on ninety sweet five and one oh
seven five the fan.
Speaker 1 (01:45:40):
For just joining us. We've been talking about this all
morning long. Chris Ballard meeting with the media as he
does every year after the Colts get through their waivers
claims and get to a fifty three man roster that
they believe is going to be the real deal going
into week one. Most of yesterday's conversation though, with the
media was all about Anthony Richardson and what is his
story moving forward and why Daniel Jones now? And what
(01:46:03):
else did you take away from that?
Speaker 2 (01:46:05):
That they believe in essence that they can win now
with Daniel Jones and somewhere down the line they could
win with Anthony Richardson. I just think that those two
competing timelines are kind of hard to sell either quarterback
on long term but also this fan base.
Speaker 3 (01:46:22):
So we'll see how it shakes up.
Speaker 2 (01:46:23):
But ultimately, like Chris Baller said, my biggest takeaway Jeff
is that he was like, if you win, people believe.
Speaker 1 (01:46:28):
He don't.
Speaker 3 (01:46:29):
They don't believe. Simple that's true.
Speaker 1 (01:46:31):
And like I said, you got those first three weeks right.
You're playing two teams that you were battling for playoff
position with just a year ago, and then you have
a division opponent that's been giving you fits. Kevin, you
go two in one or he had forbidden let's hope
three to zero. At that point in time, maybe people
start to believe a little bit in the move right.
Speaker 3 (01:46:47):
Move the Manning statue to the back of Lucas and
put the Daniel Jones statue out front. Let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:46:54):
Also yesterday a couple of roster moves. There were some
waiver claims for the Colts after everybody else else got
down to their fifty three men rosters around the league.
Speaker 3 (01:47:03):
Yeah, just one waiver claim for the Colts. Three of
their players did get claimed elsewhere. Chad Mumma right from Max.
I think I'm saying that right. He is the linebacker
coming over, yes, from Jacksonville primarily special teams. But this
gives them now five linebackers on the fifty three man roster.
They did wave their six round pick, big fellow Tim
Smith out of Alabama the d tackle there. So eleven
(01:47:25):
defensive lineman now becoming ten, which is makes some sence there.
And again three of their guys claimed elsewhere. Juju Brentz
finds a home ironically in Miami, who the Colts play
Week one. So the Colts are using Xavier Howard, former
Dolphins corner. The Dolphins are I guess going to use
Juju Brent's former Colts corner here in a Week one matchup.
(01:47:45):
Jalannie Woods to the Jets and Samuel Wollmack, a cornerback
to the Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 1 (01:47:51):
Practice squad also named yesterday. Among the notables running backs
Khalil Herbert, Ulysses Bentley, cornerback Chris Lawns, and wide receiver
Coleman Owen. Wouldn't be surprised if any of those guys
see a little bit of time depending on injuries this year.
Speaker 3 (01:48:05):
Yep, that's one of those running backs could play Week
one if.
Speaker 6 (01:48:08):
Tyler is not.
Speaker 2 (01:48:10):
Yeah, and he was not practicing yesterday officially, But we
saw Tyler Goodson out there with his left elbow wrapped up,
the one he dislocated. He was doing some running off
to the side, but still no official participation in practice
just yet.
Speaker 1 (01:48:22):
All right. We can also tell you major League Baseball,
it's the end is getting close. I think for the
Cincinnati Reds. Kevin, you've already declared it over, but mathematically
there's still a lot.
Speaker 3 (01:48:31):
But here come the red leg. What Evince Carter?
Speaker 1 (01:48:34):
Do you have to dump? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:48:39):
Could not apply more. Honestly, I thought Mark would have more.
Speaker 1 (01:48:42):
Abandon being a Reds fan? Are you going to abandon
following this team?
Speaker 3 (01:48:46):
Well? Where are you gonna go?
Speaker 1 (01:48:48):
Well?
Speaker 4 (01:48:48):
Of it?
Speaker 1 (01:48:49):
It was Uh, it was fun while it lasted.
Speaker 3 (01:48:51):
Have a very high care factor and is burning out.
All the change is that all you got over there?
Keep going. I thought you had more, Mark I can.
I mean I have millions of audio shout out right
here to doctor Ian Nelson. Thank you to Rick on
Twitter for sharing this. We brought it up earlier in
the show. Homestead and Carol High School played an outdoor
(01:49:12):
volleyball match last night. The scenes were awesome. Gray Smith
from The Star, Brian what's his last name, James the
Prep skuy Brian Heinschin wrote an article on it. Just
such a cool scene up there in Fort Wayne. Basically
they played the outdo a football game in Homestead's stadium,
tons of people in the stands, all of that. But
(01:49:34):
Ian Nelson, I guess, is a doctor up there and
his daughter's on the Homestead team, and he came up
with the original idea. Obviously, we've seen it collegiately out
in Nebraska, which is certainly whatever the Alabama football if
you will, for volleyball.
Speaker 1 (01:49:50):
So really cool.
Speaker 3 (01:49:51):
Saw the indig Nite mascot Pepper was up there and everything.
So what a fun night for high school sports up
there in the old or it was it two one
nine in the four line.
Speaker 1 (01:50:01):
Yeah, and uh go look at those just go see them. Yeah,
it's good. Uh, college football later on tonight, not only
locally here Marrion and you Indy going at it this evening,
right CoV correct.
Speaker 3 (01:50:13):
Yes, that is a matchup that definitely we uh I
think from a that level of football makes sense and
we haven't really seen it here lately, so that should
be fun. Speaking of local football ties, you know, there's
a lot of local guys that made a fifty three
men roster. Listener reached out earlier one of us to
mention Jay Higgins from Buff he made the Ravens fifty
(01:50:36):
three men roster. I know, if you guys saw these
videos yesterday as Eric DeCosta their GM, I believe they
had three undrafted guys make the team and they had
kind of behind the scenes footage of him telling that
and the Higgins one was really really cool seeing that.
So some local ties. He was good, very good against
the Colts in that preseason matchup there. So shout out
to the pride of buff right there. Truly am the
(01:50:59):
franchise here.
Speaker 5 (01:51:00):
JMV sucks at radio and at basketball really Rudkevin.
Speaker 3 (01:51:08):
Now you guys are laughing and you're acting like that's real. Mark.
I think that you know, it should be met with
a explanation.
Speaker 1 (01:51:16):
But context from Mark decktonout.
Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
You know what, you sound like a hater to me,
and as a hater myself, I respect it.
Speaker 1 (01:51:23):
I love me some me.
Speaker 3 (01:51:24):
I'm really the only competent person on this station. Do
you guys think that that sounds like me? You don't, James,
So I played that for my wife and she was
so rattled. Really again, Jake Querry is due for another
heart attack, and I'm pretty sure Jimmy Cook, that's just
(01:51:47):
that sounds like AI. Yes it was Jason Hammer, who
will be joining us coming out here in football season
to deliver our picks on Thursdays. Yes, he created that
late in the year. Don't ask me to help anyone else.
I'm too busy carrying the radio station. AI, Kevin Bowen,
thank you, Mark Dyton a whole I A I Kevin.
Speaker 6 (01:52:13):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:52:14):
Those are fighting words.
Speaker 1 (01:52:15):
See he's couching. He's taking the shots, couching it under
the auspices of AI.
Speaker 3 (01:52:19):
All I know is my boy Mark.
Speaker 2 (01:52:20):
He can say a lot of slick stuff because he's
over there. He's got a little shield around him. But
if you want to, you know, reach over that mark,
you know, Kevin rather and use some of that six
three length.
Speaker 3 (01:52:30):
I won't blame you a I Kevin Bowen out take
those by.
Speaker 5 (01:52:39):
James.
Speaker 3 (01:52:39):
You are off. You can kiss my ass man.
Speaker 1 (01:52:49):
James, you were off to colts camp. We will talk
to you soon and see you bright and early tomorrow morning.
Go get it.
Speaker 3 (01:52:55):
Yes, no camp, but practice, let's do it well.
Speaker 1 (01:52:57):
Yeah, and that's uh, something will be to talking about
tomorrow morning. But in the meantime we'll come back. We'll
reflect more on some of the things Chris Ballard said
you can hear from him himself in his own words.
We might even let you get to know AI Kevin
Bowen just a little bit more house as we continue,
we will not ninety three five you didn't even know
this well. My wife and I were dating. We took
(01:53:20):
a trip to my home stay, Colorado when we spent
some time up in Aspen, Colorado, and we were having
breakfast even though it was evening. I'm a big breakfast guy,
like at any time of the day, and there was
this great little breakfast spot in the middle of Aspen
that we were in. It was like nine o'clock at
night and we were almost the only two in there,
and this song came over the loud speaker. It was
so so you touched my heartstrings today, Buddy, about that.
Speaker 3 (01:53:42):
Mark Dykedon just put the record in the mood. Hell yeah, boy,
I'm glad I'm on this side of the desk and
sounds like it could be old babysitter night for the record,
household hair. I like that Mark on the Vanasa Carlton.
Get the bacon and eggs.
Speaker 6 (01:53:57):
Mark.
Speaker 3 (01:53:58):
You just said right there, Jeff, one thing I could
not endorse more outside of Vanessa Carlton. Great, great tune.
I'm a big breakfast for dinner guy.
Speaker 1 (01:54:07):
Oh all the time, anytime. Twenty four.
Speaker 3 (01:54:09):
We did that earlier this week. Pick up ros you
say from school. She is beaming, Daddy. We had breakfast
for lunch today, rattling off sausage, pank you know everything.
She's asked me if we can have breakfast for dinner.
I'm like, well, I don't know. We can go breakfast
for all three meals in one day. But I thought
to myself, we got to whipping up eggs and bacon
to any time, household.
Speaker 1 (01:54:27):
Anytime, waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, biscuits.
Speaker 9 (01:54:33):
You name it.
Speaker 1 (01:54:34):
I'm I love that's my Achilles Hill and comes to
my diet is all kinds of really good breakfast food.
Speaker 5 (01:54:39):
We did pancakes and eggs the other day for break
for dinner, and I was like, oh, this is amazing,
this is outstanding.
Speaker 1 (01:54:44):
You know, I'm an oatmeal guy. I like oatmeal anytime
in the day.
Speaker 3 (01:54:47):
I think that looks awful.
Speaker 1 (01:54:49):
I like oatmeal.
Speaker 3 (01:54:50):
Now you lost me there.
Speaker 1 (01:54:52):
Now you put a little if you flavor it just
just right. Oatmeal is awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:54:57):
What's your thoughts on prunes?
Speaker 1 (01:54:59):
Not a big fan?
Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
Okay, as a no oatmeal's oatmeal was an old man, DRNK.
Speaker 5 (01:55:03):
I was starting to think about this mark since I
was a kid. Oatmeal, Yeah, I'm a group Kevin. I
oatmeal looks like something out of a diaper.
Speaker 3 (01:55:10):
We're gonna get back into those, Like what the hell
are they called that you feed your baby? Like when
you're starting to introduce them to solids, Oh, like the uh,
theal or whatever it is. Yeah, and like but there's
like not pouches, but you know, like you know, you
spoon it in it's like the Gerber foods in the
job Gerber Foods. Yeah, it shows you how long it's
(01:55:30):
been since I've done that. I'm thinking myself. The flavor
and the look of those things are some of the
just most disgusting things you can imagine. Am I the
only guy that liked the flavor? Use that on Thanksgiving?
Speaker 6 (01:55:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:55:44):
No, thanks special occasions.
Speaker 1 (01:55:45):
I like the vanilla pudding though, I would eat that
every once in a while.
Speaker 5 (01:55:49):
Got the uh, there's yeah, some some stuff where I'm
just like, I don't know. It was like spinach and like,
I don't know. There's some stuff I'm like, why would
I feed this to my child? I don't want to
eat that, Like, why would I give it to the baby?
Speaker 6 (01:56:00):
No?
Speaker 3 (01:56:00):
Thank you, Jeff. Do you think Chris Boward was uber
defensive yesterday?
Speaker 1 (01:56:04):
No, I've seen him much more defensive. I think I
think he sounded like a guy that knew exactly going in,
just like you and everybody asked you and James what
that press conference was going to sound like yesterday before
it happened, and you were both dead on that ninety
percent of it was going to be about the quarterback.
I think Chris Ballard to me, looked like a guy
that knew exactly what was coming and just wanted to
get through it.
Speaker 3 (01:56:24):
Am my numb doing at this point?
Speaker 1 (01:56:26):
I think he is probably at some point, Yeah, did
you did he strike you as anything different than a
guy who just wanted to get through it coming?
Speaker 3 (01:56:33):
You know, someone made the comp earlier, and it's not
a great comp but I can kind of hear where
this person is coming from. I think goes Fitch tweeted this,
It feels like Chuck Pagono's twenty seventeen season.
Speaker 1 (01:56:47):
A little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:56:48):
And for those unfamiliar with the reference on that, was
it seventeen or eighteen when he was tight at the
hip with Ryan Grigson. Well, Gregson was gone by that point.
Grigson was gone after twenty sixteen. But yeah, seven teen
was Ballard's first year and Jim Mersey kept Chuck Magono,
and to me it made no sense whatsoever Ballard was
(01:57:08):
not going to keep Chuck Bagono after that, and sure enough,
it lasted one year and the rest is history. On
that front, it does feel a little bit like we're
just going through the motions and you know, I don't know,
is it writing that clear? On the wall or can
one NFL season cure all in the eyes of carli
Ars Gordon, that's the ultimate that we're going to find
(01:57:32):
out here. But yeah, there are some vibes of that,
and just in general, like you know, Ballard's talked what
at the end of the season January, at the combine,
in February, he talked at owners meetings in March, he
talked during the draft, he talked to the start of
training camp. That's five six times he's talked since the
end of the season. There's not much more the man
(01:57:52):
can say. We just got to get back to playing football.
Speaker 1 (01:57:56):
Because the last three times we've heard from him owners
meet he was asked a lot about Daniel in the
quarterback situation. Right then when you and I and James
had him on, it was all about adding Daniel Jones
and what was going on. And then yesterday it was
about hey, Daniel Jones your starter now and Anthony Richardson
what's next for him? So it's all been a variation
in the same theme.
Speaker 3 (01:58:18):
So yeah, I think the word when you when you
carry that type of resume, the words are hollow. That's
that's the most succinct way I can put it. Any
words you're going to say are going to be met
with skepticism, and rightfully so.
Speaker 1 (01:58:31):
Does it Is it a playoff appearance or a playoff
win that gets him another year.
Speaker 3 (01:58:37):
I'm not ready to say it's that black and white.
We have seen coaches and gms fired before who have
been in the playoffs, who have won a playoff game,
and so I'm not ready to go there. I don't
think it's that black and white. I think you're gonna
have to see some actual organizational strides, particularly at quarterback
for a tenth year for Chris Bouten. That those are
(01:58:59):
my thoughts. Carlo Gordon is and again, I'm not gonna
pretend to know Carly super well by any means, but
she's always struck me as very black and white, and
I think we're bringing some evidence that would bother me.
You know, Jeff I said to you earlier in the show,
But by my eyeballs and talking to some people as well,
I would venture to guess that was the worst attendance
we've had at Grand Park in seven years. In talking
(01:59:20):
with some people, it sounds like the preseason TV ratings
were the worst over a decade. That's bottom line stuff, Jeff,
that's business stuff. That's dollars and cents. Even if you
are accepting of the product on the field, if the
money isn't adding up, if the eyeballs aren't adding up,
I'm gonna would that be bother some two people a
(01:59:43):
top businesses and people that care and have much more
direct impact to the financials finances of it all.
Speaker 1 (01:59:51):
I think so yeah, And it's it's more apathetic. And
I can tell you just from my research and digging
here at the rate radio station, July and August was
not full of Colts fans for the first time in
a long time listening to the radio station. So I
think people just are in a wait and see mode.
They're fans, so they'll always be hopeful and if they
(02:00:13):
go to in one or three and zero out of
the gate, they're going to jump right back on that bandwagon,
as they should and will. But there's a lot of yeah,
I've seen this before, Wake me up.
Speaker 3 (02:00:22):
If it's different, wake me conjunction, junction, what's your function?
Speaker 1 (02:00:29):
Can you find that mark?
Speaker 10 (02:00:30):
We gotta get that mark of all the audio that
you've played today, arguab your most audibly played day in
the history of you in that seat, and I can't
get a conjunction function.
Speaker 3 (02:00:43):
Just hold on. I have to wait for the YouTube
ads to finish for those being like, what the hell
is Kevin saying? James Boyd earlier referenced, I don't even.
Speaker 1 (02:00:52):
Know he said the word conjunction mo ALEI Cox, Yeah,
I think you're talking about tight ends and how this
affected that and things of that nature.
Speaker 3 (02:01:00):
And I just started to sing.
Speaker 1 (02:01:02):
There you go off, Kevin balling.
Speaker 8 (02:01:04):
Dude, conjunction junction.
Speaker 9 (02:01:08):
Motion, look it up Worth and freezes hand claws.
Speaker 1 (02:01:13):
Let's pickle up with some of the eleven tickets. We'll
conjoin them with indy eleven tickets.
Speaker 3 (02:01:18):
Look at that?
Speaker 1 (02:01:19):
How about that?
Speaker 6 (02:01:20):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (02:01:20):
All right? I need the keyword indy eleven in the
text line two three nine ten seventy nine, ten seventy
mark the seventh person to text in indy eleven gets
that it's gonna be on a list.
Speaker 6 (02:01:32):
Right.
Speaker 1 (02:01:34):
You don't have to answer phones, you don't have to.
All you gotta do is look at a list and
take the seventh one. That's easy.
Speaker 3 (02:01:41):
What the hell is the conjunction?
Speaker 1 (02:01:43):
It conjoins things together, It puts things together.
Speaker 3 (02:01:47):
Give me more than that words that will get you
a D minus on give me more than that.
Speaker 1 (02:01:54):
It's been a minute since I was in school. Yeah,
you're the word smith here. You're right for a living
every day.
Speaker 3 (02:02:00):
Well, there's a reason why I write for a radio
website and I don't write for the athletic for the watching, I.
Speaker 1 (02:02:05):
Tend to use the word more bringing two things together.
I don't know about a word my oldest.
Speaker 5 (02:02:10):
Has asked me, but the difference between adverbs and adjectism,
Like your dad is not smart, don't look to me
for your schooling, don't don't come my way?
Speaker 3 (02:02:17):
Is there an l y somewhere?
Speaker 6 (02:02:19):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (02:02:20):
Conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses
in a sentence.
Speaker 3 (02:02:25):
There you go, do with that what you want.
Speaker 1 (02:02:28):
Otherwise, sure, Kevin Bone is a terrific writer. Otherwise he
can't tell you what a conjunction is. Is it otherwise
a conjunctive word?
Speaker 6 (02:02:41):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:02:42):
Also maybe otherwise also here here you know those kinds
of things. We'll check it out. Do you have a
list yet?
Speaker 5 (02:02:50):
I know you're looking at h Well, I'm going through
the nine hundred text messages you just made me do.
Speaker 1 (02:02:56):
Well, I only gave you seven nine. All right, I
will tell you who wins the Indy eleven tickets and
we might even have another spot towards the end of
the show in the Fantasy Football League. Here for the
morning show. We'll do that and finish up strong and
get your ready to go for a big night at
college football tonight next on ninety three five and one
seven five The Fan. I'm just a bill.
Speaker 9 (02:03:17):
Yes, I'm only a bill, and I'm sitting here on Capitol.
Speaker 8 (02:03:21):
Here as you were listening to a fan morning show
on nine.
Speaker 1 (02:03:36):
And we're all schoolhouse rock today, are we not? Mark Dyton?
Speaker 5 (02:03:44):
Well, this is Sesame Street if I know, but that
whole genre. Yes, yes, this is my wheelhouse as a kid.
I mean, if you need to count to twelve, use
this song. In this song only, I'm mention junction.
Speaker 1 (02:03:55):
I might really be showing my age. But do other
you guys remember the Electric Company LeVar Burton start Remember
reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton? It was that before.
Speaker 3 (02:04:04):
I'm assuming that was.
Speaker 1 (02:04:05):
In the same general time frame right there.
Speaker 3 (02:04:08):
Where in the world is Carmen San Diego. That was
a fun show.
Speaker 1 (02:04:13):
Arthur.
Speaker 3 (02:04:14):
Of course I love Arthur. Arthur gets it done.
Speaker 1 (02:04:18):
Uh, My kids watched the little shows called like Little
Einstein and Thomas the Train and stuff like that when
they were two, three, four years old. Though those things pass. Now,
what's the thing train?
Speaker 3 (02:04:28):
I remember? I think Thomas the Train is still going strong?
Speaker 1 (02:04:31):
Yeah. Yeah, we used to take the conduct whenever I
was tasked with watching the little guys when they I
had two under two, and so when they were like
three and two and I'd have to watch them for
an entire aftering, we'd go down to the local Barnes
and Noble and they had a big, old, huge Thomas
the Train play station set up and we would just
play Thomas the Train for like two hours.
Speaker 5 (02:04:51):
Think one of the wilder things of Thomas Magic's school bus,
Thank you Jedi Magic School was required.
Speaker 3 (02:04:58):
Yeah, one thousand percent. Time's the Train?
Speaker 5 (02:05:01):
I just remember the conductors were Ringo Starr and George Carlin,
and I'm like, how did they get this gig?
Speaker 1 (02:05:06):
What happened here? Yeah? Tame George Carlin, very tame.
Speaker 3 (02:05:11):
Yeah, this guy's cool. Let me check out his other stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:05:13):
Oh my word, were you able to manage getting all
to the seventh text? Shout out? Paul, Paul is going
there you go, there we go. Is that a family
poor back today? I believe yes, yep, good job you
got it out of you, Paul. We've got college football,
as we talked about later on tonight, locally, I might
try to find that Mary and I you can't and
go check that out for a few minutes if I
(02:05:34):
can get away from you, Indy, right, are you not sorry?
Speaker 3 (02:05:38):
You a big difference respect The Greyhound surprised one of them. Yeah,
on the on the schedule probably wouldn't be the craziest
thought there, but yeah, that's a fun one. And again
another great great weather night. I think this time last
year we had that horrific week two weather night, if
I remember correctly, in high school football. So we'll get
(02:05:58):
set tomorrow a ton of great game games as well,
and then honestly, ideal tailgate, whether whether you're West Lafayette,
whether you're Bloomington on Saturday, awesome. I think the Purdue
storyline Mike y Ramovich ball state's head coach. He is
a Purdue grad, played it or coached at McCutcheon, so
plenty of ties there. So first game for him there
and first game obviously.
Speaker 1 (02:06:20):
For Bury Odam.
Speaker 3 (02:06:21):
Then the Irish Sunday Night down there at the U.
Speaker 1 (02:06:24):
Are you interested at all? On Monday Night's North Carolina
Day Baker Bill Belichick, I'm fascinated.
Speaker 6 (02:06:29):
I am.
Speaker 3 (02:06:31):
I'm a hate watch Belichick this year. I'll admit it now. Yeah,
I want Belichick to lose every game you.
Speaker 1 (02:06:38):
Used to want to see, like a miserable one year
existence for him.
Speaker 3 (02:06:41):
It's probably explains a lot about how you're wired as
a human. Do you get more gratification out of the
hate watch team losing or the team you like winning.
Speaker 1 (02:06:52):
I only have a couple of teams that I just
love to see go down.
Speaker 3 (02:06:56):
Mark Dydon, would you rather the Packers lose or the
Bear just win? Packers watching?
Speaker 5 (02:07:04):
You're watching the Packers lose, especially like you know, late
games or something like that, or they just get like
absolutely shredded. I very much enjoy that. Like I'll hate
watch the Steelers this year. I would like to see
Aaron Rodgers just get pummeled into a puddle of puss.
I'd say that three times fast.
Speaker 3 (02:07:19):
Yeah, boy, I'm gonna let you say that, and just but.
Speaker 5 (02:07:21):
Yeah, I would like I would very much like to
see Aaron Rodgers flat on his face. A lot of
the times, and I would like to see the Packers
go down and go down quite often.
Speaker 3 (02:07:28):
So you guys good with me? Hate watching Bellichick?
Speaker 5 (02:07:30):
This absolute how many shots of his girlfriend are gonna
be on the opening broadcast?
Speaker 1 (02:07:34):
Is gonna be there?
Speaker 3 (02:07:35):
I mean, is he gonna say you can't do that? Well,
I think she calls a shot. So if she wants
to run the offense, I think he's got a letter, right,
it's her world, you'd think, so.
Speaker 1 (02:07:47):
Get her a headset down there on the sideline. Maybe.
Speaker 3 (02:07:49):
Is that TCU?
Speaker 1 (02:07:50):
Yep?
Speaker 3 (02:07:51):
Boy, how about TCU? Well, that be the most random
national title appearance team, like in the next ten years.
Speaker 1 (02:08:00):
They've had. They've they've been in and around it for.
Speaker 3 (02:08:02):
A minute, Okay, in and around. It's a little bit
different than playing for the national team.
Speaker 1 (02:08:07):
Yeah, I know, but I'm thinking out loud, is I
don't see them. I don't see them doing that regularly?
Speaker 3 (02:08:13):
No, Well, yeah, that's what I'm getting at, Like the
most random national championship appearance team we've had in college
football in years.
Speaker 1 (02:08:20):
Probably getting the fact that it was the same three
or four teams every single year for a decade.
Speaker 3 (02:08:26):
We'll tell that to Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (02:08:28):
Well, they were one of the three or four teams.
Speaker 3 (02:08:30):
Oh wow, I'd probably put Georgia in Alabama, Clemson, Ohio
State before Notre Dame.
Speaker 1 (02:08:34):
But Notre Dame was an interloper on more than one occasion.
That's my point.
Speaker 3 (02:08:38):
I appreciate that praise.
Speaker 9 (02:08:40):
Man.
Speaker 1 (02:08:40):
I feel like I'm way too nice to Kevin all
day long.
Speaker 3 (02:08:43):
That's why I have all this audio saved. He's mean,
James Boydovert Colts practice? A couple of people asking about that?
So yes, there, I guess their last practice really till Monday.
NFL mandates that you take off Labor Day weekend, so
three day stretch. Pretty much every team Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday will be off. Reconvene Monday as you have a
(02:09:05):
Monday practice and then get into game prep week. So
Shane Steike wanna meet the media a little bit later today.
We'll see if any lingering fifty three man roster comings
and goings as that cycle plays out here.
Speaker 1 (02:09:17):
Usually most interested in learning from him today psychon yeah
and learning yep.
Speaker 3 (02:09:23):
I don't know if I'd know those two words and
press lines across.
Speaker 1 (02:09:27):
What question are you most likely to ask him?
Speaker 3 (02:09:30):
Literally? It hasn't even Sadly, it hasn't even crossed my mind.
I will think about it on the drive up to
the West fifty sixth Street and see what I can
come up with.
Speaker 5 (02:09:37):
So somebody's singing conjunction junction in his head and like,
oh yeah, I gotta ask Shane steike in something, ask
him about ask him about conjunction junction. Do you remember
that I heard he was asked about Skyline Chili in
the Cincinnati postgame press conference. You'll have to find that audio, Mark, Ah,
so you can tell you so caught off guard?
Speaker 1 (02:09:56):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (02:09:56):
I don't know about chili. I know about I know
about four to three. I know about Nickel defenses. That's
got a nice procedure going on here. Yeah, I think so,
I'm work shopping it.
Speaker 1 (02:10:07):
I'm work shopping.
Speaker 3 (02:10:08):
I can't tell if it's good or not. It's worked.
Speaker 1 (02:10:11):
It's all on process.
Speaker 3 (02:10:12):
We've got a process going here to say process. Will
that help?
Speaker 1 (02:10:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:10:16):
That probably probably is a good I'll work on that one.
That one's I'm work shopping that impression. Okay, what do
you think?
Speaker 1 (02:10:22):
Strange? Stiken believes his job as a head coach and
offensive quarter is right now. And trying to help develop
Anthony Richardson, Like, what active role will he be playing?
Speaker 6 (02:10:31):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (02:10:31):
I don't think I'll have a very active role with Richardson. No.
I mean I think it's all about in season, I'm
the head coach on the play caller, it's all about
Daniel Jones. Yeah, and that's why again, you know Cam Turner,
QB coaching, Jim Bob Kodter, the OC. You know a
lot of that responsibility.
Speaker 1 (02:10:44):
All I can think of Cam saying I feel like
we've done all we can do. I feel like we've
done everything. Yeah I'm paraphrasing, but that was essentially what
he's said.
Speaker 3 (02:10:53):
Man, Again, this gets back into the grander Richardson conversation
of that you have the right people in place in
those positions to further the development because the Cam Turner
resume isn't necessarily one that has a lot of quarterback
development on it. And you know, I hold her, Joey
Erickson say this earlier. You know, is Shane Stiken Is
he just a maximizer of an offense? Or is he
(02:11:16):
a quarterback developer? And I know that might sound like semantics,
but to me, those are two very different things. You
can maximize an offense, game plan it up, script it
up wonderful. Exis and O's person. But developing a quarterback
that's a different aspect to being a you know, an
elite level offensive head coach.
Speaker 1 (02:11:36):
What do you make of really quickly, mark someone like
Ben Johnson did such an amazing job with a veteran
quarterback that he got himself a head coaching job.
Speaker 5 (02:11:43):
I like Shane or I like Shane Jesus. I like
Ben Johnson everything I've heard. He doesn't sound like a
football robot, like the one we have in town right now,
so it's nice to hear some honesty about him. Caleble
And took some sacking sacks in the preseason said, looks
like he had plenty of protections. So yeah, I like
the hard coaching that Ben Jonson and brings.
Speaker 1 (02:12:00):
All right, that'll wrap it up for us, Jacot noon
junk ship tomorrow right here.
Speaker 3 (02:12:05):
Your function
