Speaker 1 (00:03):
Good morning and welcome in to Tuesday. I feel like
this should still be Victory Tuesday with all the surrounding
hype of Indiana Football and the Indianapolis Colts and everybody
rolling around. I go back to what I said yesterday.
Good morning, Kevin Bowen, Good morning James Boyd and Caleb
Zuverer's back again from Mark Dyton today. Did a great
job yesterday. I'd sign up for eleven and one between
(00:24):
the two teams each and every year, would you not,
Kevin Bowen? As long as you've been around here and
see how things have been.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Honestly, I'd say the most impressive then Colts you related,
maybe even our workplace related? Is the timing that you
just executed right there behind the sausage. How does the
sausage get made? Can you walked in as soon as
as soon as the final highlight was being played? That
is Daniel Jones timing on a third down to Josh Downs.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
I was actually talking to the producer from WWC in
the hall way, and you can hear what we have
going on on the air. Love There's no delay out there,
so I knew it was time to come in.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
That's all I wou was excellent. I mean here, I am.
My heart's pounding, I'm sweating. I'm thinking, oh boy, we're
gonna have start the show and then boom.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
That's how it works, James, did you take Boks right in?
That's how you do it right there?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Hey man, I'm just for the record, what comes to
the show.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
The last person who was late was not me, just saying,
just saying, so I have learned a few things from you, Jeff,
I've to use it again.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
Yea.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Actually, well, no good timing and another good morning here
on the show.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yeah. No, it's gonna be a lot of fun. We
were in here early looking at everything, and I know
one of the big topics for everybody in college football
is going to be penn State's opening and Kurt Signetti
and you know, being a Pennsylvania guys, you gonna be there.
I just the more I tell and I talked to
a bunch of people yesterday who are kind of plugged
into college football that I've known over the years. And
then obviously, like everybody else reading what you see, hearing
(01:41):
guys like Joel Klatt doing his thing yesterday, I just
think it's gonna be really difficult for Penn State to
work everything out even if they wanted, really truly, if
their heart was set on Kurt Signetti, I think it'd
be really difficult for them to do. And I'm not
so sure Signette you would want to go.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah, I frankly, I think Signetti's ego wants to be
the guy at IU that you say in the same
sentence with Bob Knight and no one laughs at you.
And I don't think he could go to Penn State
accomplish that. You're always going to play second fiddle to
Joe Paterno, of course. So yeah, I you know, as
I said yesterday, I think you can make a case
(02:21):
of the Indiana job is much much closer to the
Penn State job than anyone would have ever imagined three, five,
ten years ago. But that's a landscape of how college
football's changed, and I would be surprised if Kurt Signetti
left Indiana for Penn State.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
I know, James, you're focused mostly on the daytime with
the Colts and pro football in the NFL and things
like that, but we're all aware of how buyouts work
and how things would go there. It costs a lot
of money right now for not only Penn State, who's
eaten forty eight million to fifty million dollars of money
that they owe James Franklin, And it would probably cost
them somewhere between ten and thirteen million to go and
(02:57):
get Kurt Signetti on top of that. That's before you
even start talking about his salary. He's already making eight
million this year. You figured it would be between ten
and twelve to get him to move over there. I
don't even know financially, is as much money as people
have at a place like Penn State.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 4 (03:14):
I mean, I guess there's always a possibility. But like
I said yesterday, if you're cursing Natty, you just use
it as leverage. Hey, give me a raise after what
I've just done this year. You know how it goes. Usually,
if you are a coach and you have more success
than the year before, you want to keep me, you
use it as a way to get some more coins
out of whoever is employing you.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
So that's kind of how I look at it.
Speaker 4 (03:34):
But I would definitely say, you know, speaking of the Colts,
there is some big news we have to discuss related
to the quarterback room. So you know, with the latest
on Anthony Richardson. He was placed on injured reserve yesterday
due to his freak accident with the involving a stretching
band that resulted in an eye injury for him, cracked
his orbital bone, fractures orbital bone in his face. So
he will miss at least the next four games, which
(03:56):
means also the next five weeks because there's a bye
weekend there after you come.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Back from overseas.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
So the Colts most likely I would think we'll go
out and sign to the quarterback perhaps today, you know,
practices tomorrow, And yeah, that is certainly an update for
that room, and just unfortunate you're Frans Andy Urchison.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, and obviously Riley Leonard's never played a snap in
a regular seat. I don't think he's ever played a
meaningful snap, has he in the regular season? I kind
of remember, I don't think he got at the end
of the game or anything like that. So he's probably
a long way from jumping in there and doing that.
Who are some of the names you brought up a
few yesterday, Kevin, anybody that might be out there that
could be a possibility, or anybody sitting there on practice
(04:36):
squads around the world.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Well, I'm not trying to get anyone to hurl their
breakfast here at seven o five in the morning, So
maybe we can wait a little bit later, let that digest.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
And he tells you all you need to know right there, keep.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Four sixty five as clean as possible here in the
morning rush hour. We we'll throw some names out there.
But James, I think the news item yesterday, the fact
that Richardson will be out for a month, and you know,
as you said, five weeks with the buy four total games,
that is a little bit of a different thought than
maybe this time yesterday we were just kind of unsure
(05:08):
of how long. Yeah, so we know it's at least
going to be four games. My question then becomes, because
it's going to be so long, do you change how
much you invest in this move? If he was just
going to be a week or two, could you've gotten
by with Riley Leonard? Could you have done something a
little bit and again whatever drive through if you will,
(05:28):
fast food restaurant. Now do you feel like, hey, we
need to sit down and do a little bit, something
more serious and then the domino effect off of that,
Let's play out the hypothetical, Hey, you hate the free
agent quarterback market that's out there. You want to trade
for a quarterback because you need to get a little
bit more quality in there. Okay, let's say you give
up whatever a fifth round pick now for twenty twenty six.
(05:51):
You don't have your fifth round pick. You traded your
sixth round pick earlier this year for Makai Blackman, a
corner that's actually now playing a ton for you. Does
Chris Ballard then have any hesitation towards moving draft picks
for other areas of need here with the trade deadline
three weeks from today. These are all dominoes that I
think impact the Colts' decision. I assume they will sign
(06:14):
a quarterback. Obviously, the question becomes is he the backup?
Is he the third stringer? And then how much do
you invest in this move? I think those are all
really important storylines and certainly something the Colts have not
had to encounter in quite some time.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Yeah, and of course they have a game coming up
on Sunday against the Chargers Los Angeles. We know that
they have a very dangerous offense when they can get
it going, but they also have some injury bugs that
they're fighting through, and they had to pull out all
the stops and get a crazy play at the end
to beat the Miami Dolphins. James, So, as you sit
here today on a Tuesday, looking ahead, how do you
think this team matches up against the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
That's a great question.
Speaker 4 (06:52):
I don't know, honestly, which is find of the answer
you want to give as a reporter, right, But I
really don't know.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
We don't know the injury.
Speaker 4 (06:57):
Report for the Colts just yet because they have in
practice this week, and then we don't have the charges
they're gonna be feeling coming off of their big wins.
So I think that's a question that I probably can
answer later in the week, just because then you'll be
able to see who's practice who hasn't, and then what
moves they want to make on the other side, perhaps
to kind of get themselves ready for a big matchup.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
See, I feel the same way. I was hoping you'd
bail me out and have like a really definitive opinion there,
because I don't have one yet either. I can't quite
get a grip on it yet. Nah.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yeah, I mean it's tough. It's tough to kind of
predict those things.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Talk about tough, you just look at the NFL scores
in this past week and how crazy it is. We
forget just how much parody there is in the NFL,
and it truly is Kevin the old cliche, and most
cliches become cliches because they're true at some point. But
any given Sunday, like there were some crazy scores around
the league and their teams, we didn't see winning that
(07:45):
did a great job. Kansas City recovered and they Detroit's
been on a heater going to Kansas City not so much.
Did you anybody have Atlanta beating the Buffalo Bills last night?
Speaker 2 (07:55):
I didn't.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
They were better. The Bears started playing well all of a sudden.
So at least Mark dyke and can sleep on his
vacation the rest.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Someone said when that field goal went in, Mark just
got another week of vacation.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
He probably did. Is that true? Yes, he got more PTO.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Ran into someone in HR when I was coming off
the elevator. Is that true? Can you confirm that as
his boss?
Speaker 1 (08:17):
I've heard whispers. I'll have to go and see when
the HR window opens today to go and check that out. Also,
PACER's playing at home last night, lost in the final
count to the San Antonio Spurs, but they're going to
have some issues at nights at center, and they did
last night, certainly against the guy like Victor Wimbinyam and
some of the other big guys that San Antonio had.
But not a field goal was made by the four
(08:37):
centers last night.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Yeah, their center stunk more fouls than rebounds, even if
you don't want to point to points, more thousand rebounds.
Probably not a good effort from that four man group.
And fouling has been an issue, particularly with the starter.
And it looks like Isaiah Jackson will indeed be the
opening night starter based off how they've treated this offseason.
I want to say he's played, I'd have to look
at it. I want to say it's like thirty minutes
(09:01):
this preseason and he has nine fouls. Wow, So defending
without fouling a clear issue for a center that is
undersized when you compare him to other centers.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
And that's been an issue for him throughout his career obviously.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Yeah, that has definitely been an issue. So that is
definitely a question. Benedict Matherin was otherworldly as a score
last night. Yeah, he was incredible, thirty one points before
he exited what midway through the third quarter?
Speaker 1 (09:28):
First half?
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Perfect first half.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, yeah, it was pretty insane watching him score, but
you know, certainly we are used to it. Although I
will argue, let's not take that for granted. I find
myself with Matherins so many times people acting like like that, oh, yeah,
he's a great score. I'm like, yeah, like a great score. Like, dudes,
just don't do what he does. Let alone do it
at the age of whatever he is. But yeah, right now,
(09:51):
they've got some questions and the second unit, and I
get TJ McConnell's going to be out for a few weeks,
but boy, part of me thinks their best lineup right
now is Obi topping at the five, and I get
there are some deficiencies with that, but yeah, I have
not liked what the centers have shown here through the
first three preseason games. One more coming up Friday night
in San Antonio.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
All right, we'll talk about all those topics throughout the
day here at ninety three five, one of some five
the fan. I do want to give a big shout
out to the great folks who do unbelievable work out
on the far East side at Cafe it's a community
alliance out there. They work with United Way a little bit,
but it's out there on East thirty eighth and I
went out with a group of other folks from Radio
one yesterday and helped them as they distribute food to
(10:34):
as many people as possible. And when I tell you,
as many people as possible. We go in there, we
prepare the food bags, we get everything together, we get
the crates going, so there's people can pull up, drive up.
We can give them food and milk and fruits and
vegetables and just good stuff that they can take home
and hopefully nourish their families. The line stretched all the
(10:55):
way past forty second down to thirty eighth and around
through the parking line, and they do this I think
on the second Tuesday of every month. It's out there
on East thirty eighth. It's called Cafe and they just
do unbelievable work. So shout out to all the great
folks out there. And it was really humbling to be
able to go and contribute to that for just a
(11:16):
very small period of time. I think we were there
for about five hours yesterday, but it was great. All right,
coming up in a minute, we'll give everything you need
to know about the Colts, the Pacers, IU football, and
more news for Perdue basketball. It's coming up next at
ninety three to five and one oh seven to five
of the Fan We're gonna talk about basketball right in
the heart of football season because it is coming quickly.
Third preseason game of the year for the Indiana Pacers
(11:38):
last night. They did lose ultimately to the San Antonio
Spurson victor Wimbenyama one twenty four to oneh eight, but
Benedict Mathern had thirty one points in the lost twenty
seven in the first half. James Boyd, he couldn't miss,
came out on fire, hit three threes right away.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah, like Kevin said, he's a special special.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
Score, no question about that. But the Spurs just too
much with their bench play down the stretch. They went
at one twenty four to one oh eight, and Kevin
Bowen for those just joining us, will go over again.
It was a rough night for all four centers for
the Indiana Pacers.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, Issay Jackson. Foul issues continue in the entire group.
They none of them hit a field goal. I think
Tony Bradley's free throws were the only thing from a
scoring standpoint. Even if you say, well, who cares you know,
scoring whatever, that'll be a luxury. There were more fouls
than rebounds from the four man grouping there, so I
(12:33):
think it was zero for ten from the floor and
forty six minutes of action from that quartet. So right now,
it looks like Jackson and then Jay Huff that's been
the pecking order. But boy, center play not been super
encouraging by any means here in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Yeah, Tony Bradley and James Wiseman, the other two centers
that just couldn't get anything going last night. They will
play again their final preseason game of this twenty five
to twenty six season on Friday Night. That one will
be at San Antonio. In college basketball, for the first
time ever, Perdue is the number one team in the
country in the preseason Associated Press Top twenty five College
(13:12):
Basketball Poll. Boilers earned thirty five of the sixty one
first place votes to start the twenty five to twenty
six season. Always better to start near the top and
then bounce around in that top five than to have
to work your way back up all season long.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Kevin Right, Yeah, Purdue Houston Florida, Yukon Saint John's. That
is your top five. Those first place votes, we're spread
out a little bit. Houston got sixteen of them, Florida
got eight, even a couple there to Dan Hurley and
the Huskies. And of course, what Purdue is trying to do,
along with deliver that national title to West Lafayette Lucas
Soil Stadium, try to break the Big Ten run twenty
(13:48):
four years without a national title for that conference. I
want to say the ACC in the Big East of
each one eight during that time frame. It's kind of
one of the wilder stats. I feel like college basketball.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
All right, So that's what's happening in basketball.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Indiana got one vote. I don't know how oon vote
from Indiana. Uh, some dude who writes in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
So build the statue right behind Kurt Signetti for that
man there. If you added up all the teams receiving votes,
I believe that placed Indiana forty third. Okay, in the nation.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
They got one vote, which is crazy to me. Look,
Indiana might be good. They might. We have no idea.
They got a whole brand new roster, they got a
brand new coach. We just don't know what's coming down
there in Bloomington.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Which is why that vote should get revoked. Oh come on, man,
what are we doing here?
Speaker 4 (14:35):
People would love to have these votes and that is
a joke, but I've ever seen one. But yeah, you're right, Jeff,
it should be honestly, yet nowhere to go.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
Herd in basketball and third and football times are change
worth time to be alive, folks.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
I will say that I do expect any better than
they were last year. I mean, you got nowhere to
really go up when it comes to IU basketball. Honestly,
one of.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
My best friends is an affiliate relations a director at
ESPN Radio and he's an IU grad and grew up
in the area too. His mind to what you said,
where basketball is and where football is, he goes, I
never thought i'd see it. I texted him after the
game on Saturday, and he goes, I literally have a
tear in my eye right now. Literally, that's what Bloomington, lifelong,
(15:16):
faithful IU folks feel like with that football team landing.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Your life around IU football literally and not just the tailgate.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
But that is true.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
What a time. That's good stuff. All right, Speaking of football,
let's talk about the Indianapolis Colts. James, you brought it
up earlier. There was a big move made to the
roster yesterday for the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
Yeah, Anthony Richardson to ir injured reserve, so he will
miss at least the next four games. He is not
eligible to return until Week twelve at Kansas City, so
he will be out quite some time.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
And it's Kevin throughout the question earlier in the show.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Does that mean the Colts go out there and be
a little bit more aggressive when it comes to bringing
in a backup quarterback. I know some people are like, oh,
just give it to Ryan Leonard. No, do not give
it to Rya Leonard. He is very young and he's
a six round rookie. So although he's made strides and
he's learning, I don't think that would be good for
your team in the moment and also his development if
you happen to have to give him the keys. If
(16:11):
Daniel Jones goes down, it's a lot of pressure for
a guy. I mean certainly don't want to. I think
put him in a situation where he would be kind
of set up to not succeed in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
All Right, NFL Week six came to a close last
night with a pair of Monday Night football games. The
Atlanta Falcons ten point winners over the Buffalo Bills. They
went at home twenty four to fourteen. I was watching
that game, and I don't know if you saw much
of it Kevin Bowen, but Josh Allen just could never
really get it going on his standards. Last night.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
I was really impressed by Atlanta's defense. They certainly bring
a lot of looks and they really stimied Josh Allen
and the Bills. Remember the Colts will play Atlanta that
is in Berlin coming up here in a few weeks. So. Yeah,
very impressive from the Falcons. They played with fire. They
gave the ball back to Allen seemingly a million times,
but they were able to get it done last night
(16:56):
in that first Monday Night game.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Yeah, b Jehan Robinson ran for one hundred and seventy yards,
including an eighty one yard touchdown, and he also had
six receptions for sixty eight yards. Thank you very much,
Bijon for one of my fantasy football teams. Also, Bears
get a little revenge, remember that crazy play they lost
to the Washington Commanders last year. They go into Washington
last night they went with the last minute field goal
twenty five to twenty five.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
Jake Moody, he was struggling with the forty nine ers,
it goals with the Bears, and now all of a sudden,
he's advanitarian.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
My favorite kicker moment from Jake Moody is rocking the
helmet with Lisa Salter's postgame. A man that you can
tell has not had too many postgame interviews on the field. Yeah, now, Lisa,
I'm keeping my helmet on. I saw what happened in
the Colts in the warm up situation there. You can't
take any risks. You never know what's gonna I saw
Brian Branch the other night. I'm not taking any risks.
I'm keeping my helmet on, Missus Salters, and you can
(17:46):
interview me here. That is the sign of a man
that has not been in the spotlight very often.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
That's how that works. Week seven coming up, it'll be
the Colts at the Chargers. That one starts at four
oh five. Our coverage begins at one pm. Throughout our
family of stations will tell you all about those details
as the day goes along. Two buys this coming week,
The Ravens and the Buffalo Bills and anything else you
guys want to throw in right now. I know there
was a little activity at the track this week, wasn't there.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
I was gonna go, Brian Calli getting the acts. So yeah,
it will be Mike McCoy, who actually is the man
that has hired Change Stikeen with the Chargers back in
the day there. Mike McCoy will be their interim and
as the NFL world would have it, Mike Vrabel and
the Patriots await this week for the Titans. So cam Ward,
(18:33):
welcome to the NFL dysfunction abound Tennessee. Is really the
they honestly should be in the same sentence with Cleveland,
and like the Jets and how they've handled their franchise
since firing Rabel, It's been unbelievable the amount of head
coaches and gms that nobody's on the same time frame
here at all. Yeah, just wild And so yeah, Colts
(18:53):
will see Mike McCoy and the Titans coming up in
two weeks.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
That is crazy. I was going to read from a
Nathan Brown at the Indie Star. We said less than
two weeks after his indiecar career began with a testing
crash deal coin racing rookie in twenty twenty five. Indie
NXT champ Dennis Hager topped the timing charts for yesterday's
seven car test on the Ims road course. So little
activity going on there. Always fun to hear the cars
(19:17):
as you drive by speedway out there. Indeed, all right,
anything else you want to throw in? James Boyd before
we had.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
To break Brian Branch the Detroit Lions safety. He got
suspended for a game for that scuffle after the Chiefs
Lions dust up. And looking at his history, it probably
isn't all that surprising. I would imagine he appeals it.
But yeah, he's been a guy who's constant Libin's flag
for on sportsmen conduct and got fined in the past,
and the nfls that they had enough. So we will
(19:42):
see if Detroit will be without one of their best
players this coming week.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
All right, coming up in a moment, we'll talk more
Colts and Pacers last night, also Purdue basketball. Later on today,
Alex Golden is going to join us to talk Pacers
at eight point thirty. Zach Kiefer Colts at nine o'clock.
For those of you at who missed it in the
late part of the eight o'clock hour yesterday. We'll spend
a few minutes with Josh Downs. You can hear just
a couple of minutes of that coming up at a
few minutes here as we continue a busy morning here
(20:07):
at ninety three five and one oh seven to five
of the Fan Week, rolling on It's Tuesday morning. James Voyd,
Kevin Bowen, Caleb zuver in here today from Mark dyked
in again, who's a very happy man somewhere in Florida,
I would imagine after his Bears came up with a
little revenge game against the Washington Commanders on Monday night football.
We didn't even talk that much about baseball, guys, so
much going on, but the league Championship series were continuing
(20:30):
last night. The Mariners of the Blue Jays ten to three,
have taken a two games to none lead in that
American League series. They had home runs all over the place,
and the Dodgers pitching is just nasty right now. Maybe
Joel A. Erickson just wants to sleep in today because
two to one the win over the Brewers today. Our
last night Blake Snell again just almost untouchable, eight innings
of shutout, one hit baseball, and ten strikeouts, no walks.
(20:52):
So sorry, I didn't talk about baseball that much last night,
but it's it's getting real now, James, and you were
saying you tuned into a game last week. You're like,
how do you people do this for one hundred and
sixty two games in the playoffs? Right?
Speaker 3 (21:03):
He's too stressful. And I told you all.
Speaker 4 (21:08):
The reason to add to my stress is because I
can't play my best player every game. It could all
come down to the calendar and rest. And you know
that's why I feel like when I again, I feel
a little bit older, like, hey, how come this guy
can't just throw it to those arm falls off? They're
trying to win the World Series here. But yeah, it's
been good stuff and I really do try to tune
in whenever anybody else I feel like he's talking about
a big game on my social media, that'll make me
(21:29):
tune in because I'm like, I don't want to miss out.
So yeah, a lot of cool moments you can always
catch that way.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
I love that, though. The managing of pitching stabs when
you get to the Alcs and particularly in the World
Series where in the World Series, Kevin, you're your ace.
If you get him on the right rest to start
things off. He might start three games one, four, and seven,
or I've seen where he starts one and four and
he's just available in the bullpen for the last three
games and you know, maybe in the eighth inning instead
of your normal setup guy, here comes your ace. It's
(21:56):
that's one thing I love about baseball. It's just all
hands on deck at that point. Anybody who can do anything,
let's go.
Speaker 2 (22:01):
Yeah, always great drama. Brewers had opportunities last night. They
had a hell of a double play in that first an.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Eight eight to six to two. Is that what it was?
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Yeah, the scorebook would be in shambles if I was
keeping score there trying to figure that one out. But
they had moments they couldn't get it done there. So
road teams right, so far, so far they won all
three games, is that correct? There? Going up to them
taking too north of the border and the Dodgers get
it done last night.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Mariners are the only team in Major League Baseball that
have never hosted a World Series game.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
Really, yeah, and never would have guessed that.
Speaker 1 (22:35):
No, no, never, never. They got close once with the King,
Griffy Junior and Jay Buhner and Randy Johnson and all
those guys, but they couldn't quite finish the deal. Uh
So any of that's going on with the Major League Baseball,
uh the Colts just kind of keep rolling along. And
one thing is I love Kevin about this receiving corse.
You never know who's gonna step up. Michael Pittman is
(22:56):
just so steady and so rock solid. Alec Pierre back
now and he's always a threat to come up with
a thirty or forty yard game. And Josh Downs is
just kind of kept working hard and working hard, and
he's become ultra dependable and he gets the ball in
his hands and he's tough to bring down. But you
throw Tyler Warren into that mix, and even JT's getting
some some looks out of the backfield, and man Daniel
(23:18):
Jones and Shane Stuck and they have so many options
right now with the football, don't they.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
Yeah, they got great balance, great balance to the skill group. Obviously,
Jonathan Taylor's presidence probably speaks for itself, and he should
be up there in any sort of award situation. But yeah,
they're pass catching group. You know, coming into the year,
I think the thought was, hey, this is probably the
best group that has been there in the Ballard era,
and so far, I think that would play out. You know, again,
(23:44):
in the fourth quarter, you're on Sunday. It wasn't necessarily
your top guys. I think kind of Warren and Pittman maybe.
If you want to isolated anybody into that group, it
was Downs. It was Pierce making big plays for you.
Down seven, down three, So great balance, and I think
that's what makes us so difficult. Daniel Jones certainly is
not afraid to spread the ball around, and it's been
a big reason why the Colts have been so good
(24:06):
offensively here through the first six weeks.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Jimps, how good could Josh Downs be because he just
seems to come up every big every time they call
his number.
Speaker 4 (24:14):
I mean, I think we were sold on him pretty
earlier in his career. A lot of it just comes
down opportunity. Like you said to us on the show yesterday,
you know, you're not gonna get probably as many targets
as you would have got without the arrival of Tyler Warrence.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
When you get him, you gotta make it. Take advantage
of him.
Speaker 4 (24:28):
So I thought that he's he's a guy who when
it comes to targeting him, usually that results in good things.
And it's not just like you're spamming, you know, the
ball towards him, or you're just throwing at him in
volume and it's like, oh, he's not to catch one
of them.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
No, he if you put it in his area, he
usually comes down with it.
Speaker 4 (24:43):
And so he's also very talented making the first guy miss,
which I think, you know, to Kevin's point yesterday, is
sort of a anate skill that can Josh kind of
how he described it, because I do think that is
taken for granted. His ability to kind of always move
the chains on third down and usually that's it means
throwing it short of the sticks and letting him, you know,
kind of work some magic there, but it's not magic
(25:04):
because he does it all the time. So talented player,
confident player, and comes from a football family. So I'm
not surprised.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Yeah, And we had a chance to talk to Josh
downs late in the eight o'clock hour yesterday, and I
know I hear from people all the time that are
in their cars early in the seven o'clock hour. I
have to get to work by eight o'clock and then
can't listen to those things. So for those that didn't
get to hear that our seven o'clockers, here's a little
few minutes of the conversation we had with Josh Downs,
who had a tremendous day, even a touchdown grab as
the Colts got to win over the Cardinals on Sunday.
(25:32):
Josh Downs, good morning, my friend. What a day for
yourself and the Colts and Daniel Jones and this whole
team in city yesterday. How are you feeling this morning
on a victory Monday, Yes, sir, glad to be here.
Speaker 5 (25:44):
Shoot, I'm glad to get a Victory's the most important
thing as a team, and ready to get after the
Chargers this week and face another good team.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
Josh, could you walk us through the touchdown?
Speaker 5 (25:57):
There?
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Obviously quite the hit the end zone, little lofted ball
from Daniel Jones. What did you see on that touchdown?
Speaker 5 (26:04):
Yeah, yeah, just a good play call by Shane gave
us a man beating play and they were in man
so it kind of lined up perfectly. And yeah, I
didn't even see that guy that hit me. He really
he really snug me. I didn't even see him til
after I caught the ball, so I had I had
to take one. But sometimes in football you gotta you
(26:24):
gotta take some hits to make some plays, and I
had to take a couple yesterday.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Now our co host here, James boyd uh, he thought
a little bad juju on you going faking injury after that.
He's not doing that to me, man, with those pregame
warm ups, Cam Bine him did that after the first
interception of the year. Do you did you think bad
juju faking the injury?
Speaker 6 (26:43):
Nah?
Speaker 1 (26:44):
Nah?
Speaker 5 (26:44):
Nah. So actually I was a little shaken up at first,
like it wasn't it was a fake, but it was
also kind of real, like I had like I took
a little hit, so I was like, oh snap, because
I was like my first time this year taking a hit.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
So I was like I had to like.
Speaker 5 (26:57):
Kind of like oh okay, like I'm good now.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
And then and then I like.
Speaker 5 (27:01):
Then I did it the little selly but now Cam
got me earlier this year when he did that, I
was like, I was like, man, what And then he
she knows for them though, and he came up to
me and was like, hey, I like that, I.
Speaker 7 (27:12):
See you see all you doing is stressing me.
Speaker 4 (27:16):
You're stressing me because I'm like, oh my gosh, there's
number one.
Speaker 5 (27:19):
Okay, I feel you, I feel you know.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
More of that, No, more of that.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
Yeah, I was about to say, I don't know if
coach Gary Downs would approved, you know, but looking at
what your office is able to do, Josh. You know
we've talked so much about your quarterback Daniel Jones. From
your perspective as someone who works with him every day,
what is it like to be around someone who is
so obsessive about his craft to find those wrinkles to
(27:47):
help you win in the biggest moments like you did
yesterday with that game when he.
Speaker 5 (27:51):
Drives, Oh, I'm not huge because he's dedicated to the team.
He's dedicated to his own performance. So that helps a
tremendous amount. When you have your quarterback as one of
your hardest workers, if not the hardest work on the team,
it just trickles down and it's shown.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
So he's doing a great job.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
And I mean all he can do is just keep
doing what he's doing that and that'll play itself out.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
And then what does that look like from an obsession standpoint?
You're a wide receiver on the team. What is he
like on a day to day basis throughout the week
they'll be pair for a game when you know, like
he told us last week, he's late to dinner every
week because he's watching film.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
Yeah, I mean he's he's watching tape all the time.
He's in there on off day working, He's in there
early every single day. So he just does things like
that that that kind of just show his leadership and
setting set an example for the guys on the team.
And he's just showing us that he completely dedicated every
single day. And I mean I always see him watching tape.
(28:50):
So that for one, as a quarterback, that's a green flag.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
Six catches for Josh Downs yesterday and you heard that
highlight the big touchdown there to tie the game early
in the fourth quarter. We appreciate Josh Down's joining us
here on this Monday morning. Josh, what goes through your
head when you see a linebacker lined up opposite you?
Speaker 5 (29:10):
It's a must I must win matchup. That's that's pretty
much what goes to my head is something that you
gotta win when they get you in those positions. So definitely,
like those opportunities or safety is either one, but I
feel like, yeah, those matchups are the ones you got
to cash in on.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
We were talking earlier, like your yards after catch, your
knack for just knowing where defenders are. I almost feel
like at times you've got eyes in the back of
your head. Can you kind of walk us through that feel?
I don't know, maybe it's hard to describe, but like,
are you super conscious like where defenders are around you?
It's like you secure the catch and then seemingly you
(29:49):
know which way to spin or whatever dart every time
post catch.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
Kind of kind of an instinct thing, just just born
blessed with it, honestly, just a ball instinct. And then
over the years playing football and then just knowing coverages
pre snap, post snap and understanding like okay, if I
if I break here, somebody's going to be there, that
kind of thing. But it's it's it's a lot of instincts,
just just playing football for a long time.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Josh, When you look at the pregame scene, what was
your reaction to finding out that Anthony Richardson was gonna
be taken to the hospital after an accident with the
stretching man before the game, and then Mooney war goes
down with concussion, just as a player, how did you
kind of absorb all of that and then get ready
to go play a game.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
Yeah, it was just a little weird, like atmosphere, like
obviously it's two crazy accidents that you don't want to
happen to two of your teammates and friends. So I
mean that was that was just weird. And then like
having to go play a game when you know that too, Like,
I mean, those aren't like serious injuries just happened.
Speaker 6 (30:54):
Out of nowhere.
Speaker 5 (30:54):
You're just like like kind of like shocked in a sense.
But I mean then it was more so like let's
go win for him, and let's go out here and
handle business.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
So it was it was a little odd for sure.
Speaker 5 (31:05):
It was just like I've never had a pre game
like that, and I'm pretty sure like everyone on this
team has never had a pre game like that, So
it was just a little different.
Speaker 1 (31:12):
Talking to Josh Downs on the paylst Lickers Hotline this
morning at a big Day helped the Colts to a
thirty one to twenty seven win over the Cardinals yesterday.
We were talking about this earlier, right, I'm pretty sure
it's you, But who would you say, objectively, is the
best athlete in your family.
Speaker 5 (31:26):
The best athlete in my is Yeah, definitely me. But
I would say my brother is a colase. Second, he's like,
if we're talking about pure athleticism and we're talking about
pure athleticism, it's meat.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
But he's he is.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
A very very good football player, and he's he has
great instincts. But I can play more sports at a
higher level than him.
Speaker 1 (31:53):
So what about dad?
Speaker 5 (31:56):
Nah, he's right. I honestly he might have been pure athlete.
He might have been more of a pure athlete when
he was younger. But see, they didn't have They had
some tape back then, but they didn't have all the tape,
A mystery.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
His dad washed, Josh, are you if I've got my
calendars right, I believe you guys would be in Jacksonville.
Not that Shane would let you out of the team
hotel if you were an indie, but you would be
in Jacksonville the night before the Big Ten championship game.
Are you yet to the point where you're running your
(32:36):
mouth to eye you football fans? Your brother a star
safety at Ohio State for those unfamiliar, Oh no.
Speaker 6 (32:43):
Not yet.
Speaker 5 (32:44):
So I use actually a good football team. I watched
them play Orgon this week and I mean they looked
they look like one of the best, if not top
top three in the country.
Speaker 6 (32:54):
So I'm away to that they got it.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
They're gonna have to clash against each other probably in
the Big ten cham and shit, but you got you
got teams like Michigan who are still right there, Oregon
right there. So no no trash talk yet. You just
you gotta wait till it comes down to it and
then but you know, I got I got it. I'm
gonna have some story posts for sure. And the Hoover
fans are not going to.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Be excited about that.
Speaker 5 (33:17):
They're going to be like, you're not repping your state,
You're going against the Green Like I'm gonna get some
dms like that, And I'm just like you, I'm like,
come on, like you gotta go with your family over
like it's just it's just a known thing.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
But it is what it is for right.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Now, I don't know, man, it sounds like you're already
making excuses for this. You're supposed to be, you know, Josh,
the last one I got for you, and obviously coming
off of a big win, how much do you think
the presence of Tyler Warren has changed the math for
your offense.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
And you've talked about it a little.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
Bit, but we throw on that cliche of like, oh,
you got to be unselfish as a receiver and all
the guys that's so on selfish with the Colts, how
selfish are you really?
Speaker 3 (33:58):
I mean to play the position of wide receiver and
do you did?
Speaker 4 (34:00):
You have to kind of come to grips with that
a little bit more when you have a guy Tyler
Warren come to town.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
So, yeah, Tyler Tyler is an excellent player. He helps
our offense and like in a huge way because he
just adds another big weapon to the group and JT
is playing at a high level. But yeah, it's I mean, obviously,
like receivers are known as kind of divas, so we
have a we have a selfish knack just naturally.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
That we're born with.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
I feel like like that's just how we are. But
it kind of like develops your character in a way
and it makes you realize, like not everything goes your
way and you have to you have to still like
take advantage of the opportunities that you do get, because
if you're sitting there like dwelling, like all like I
need the ball more, this, that, and the third you're
complaining blah blah blah. Typically when the ball comes your
(34:47):
way after that you make a mistake and that's when
they're like, Okay, then why are we throwing you the
ball if you're going to do that. So then now
you're like, now you're trying to like prove yourself in
a sense. So rather than that, you just to be like, man,
I'm gonna take advantage of everything that comes my way
to get better each and every day, and everything will
work yourself out, and then you just go from there.
Obviously you're gonna have days where you're like frustrat like, man,
(35:10):
I want the ball more. But at the end of
the day, team winning were rolling, so you got to
just be like, you know what, as long as we winning,
I got a roll, I'm on the team, Like, let's
just keep doing.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
It, all right. Those Josh downs yesterday joining us here
on the Payless Liquors Hotline number one and he got
a touchdown and he keeps rolling on and James, we
talked about that receiving core and at the very end
thereere we talked about Tyler Warren too, and he just
does open up everything. And when they came out like
they did in that first game. We talked about it
a little bit yesterday, but he came out in the
first quarter yesterday and they're throwing him the ball and
(35:42):
they're doing different things with him. It just sends a
message to the defenses like, y'all don't know what's coming
Between j T and Pittman and Warren and Josh Downs
and Alec Peerce is back now, and we even got
some other guys, We're gonna throw it at you here
and there too. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
Here's a stat from NFL Pro which is basically like
an NFL man at a website with a bunch of
weird stats, and it said Tyler Warren caught at least
one pass from four different alignments.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
He was lined up as a tight end.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
In the slot, out wide, as a wide receiver, and
in the backfield, so he caught a pass from all
four of those alignments. And they say he called all
five of his open targets for fifty eight yards, meaning
open targets mean three yards and more separation. So it
basically means that when he lines up anywhere, he gets
open from anywhere so special player and someone who I
(36:29):
think is making a case and not just be the
offensive rookie of the year. I think that you can
make a case that he's making a Pro Bowl, you
know move and possibly All Pro move this early in
the season. I get it's very early, still just six
games in, but that's the level he's playing at.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
I don't want to dismiss it.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
And Kevin, when you talk about what Daniel Jones is
doing with efficiency, we talk about the receiving court and
Tyler Warren, it's clear that the MVP of this team
is still Jonathan Taylor, is it not?
Speaker 2 (36:56):
Yeah? I always kind of get torn on like how
do you define MVP? Do you really go acronym? Jon
Tanto's the best player?
Speaker 1 (37:03):
Right? Yeah? But he also keeps.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
Oh, the most valuable is definitely Daniel Jones, you know, easily.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
I'm always torn on that, like, Okay, what do you
really follow what MVP?
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Quarterbacks always win it? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (37:17):
J led the league rushing in twenty twenty one eight
to make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (37:19):
Yeah, so I'm always kind of torn on that. But
obviously they've been tremendous and I don't know if there
is like I don't know data that I should probably
look into a little bit more. But the last two weeks,
the fact that they are ten of ten in the
red zone. I mean, you would talk to I think
a lot of people around the NFL and they said,
so much of NFL games just boils down to who
(37:40):
converts in the red zone and who doesn't. You know,
if you look at Sunday, the Cardinals had two more
drives reached the red zone. The Cardinals moved the ball
better than the Colts moved it on Sunday, the Raiders
shockingly moved it like at the same uh you know
pace that the Colts did a week earlier. The Raiders
they lost by thirty four, but they were what over
four couldn't couldn't finish off in the red zone. So
(38:01):
so much of it comes down when you get inside
the twenty and the field condenses and all of a sudden,
you need really your excellent os to either be perfect
or your players to make plays. I mean, that's what
it boils down to. And go back to the Raiders game.
Daniel Jones, it makes a play, rolls to his right.
Everything looks a little chaotic. Late first half, Boom throws
a frozen rope to Michael Pittman Junior in the back
(38:21):
of the end zone. Fast forward to this Sunday. Who
makes plays in the red zones? We just had Josh
Downs on That was a play that Jones makes lofting
and over the defense and then Josh Downs takes a
huge hit. You look at Tyler Warren, obviously he makes
plays in the red zone for you, and you look
at the Cardinals and they didn't make anything happen in
the red zone. There so so much of it I
think boils down to really a point eighty for this
(38:43):
team compared to the early start of the season when
the red zone had some struggles. Now they're clicking big
time inside the twenty.
Speaker 1 (38:49):
Yeah text line is open as well. This morning here
on the fan text line two nine ten seventy nine,
ten seventy Matt Nitty talking about those guys says crazy
because he's only twenty six. But Jay t only need
seven rushing touchdowns to pass Edgrin for the most in
Cults franchise history. Seven touchdowns through six games of eleven
games left one hundred percent our team MVP from Matt
(39:11):
in Indy and again, it just depends on how you
define it and how it goes, but you don't. Nothing
works unless the guy driving that car at the wheel
makes it go, and Daniel Jones is making it go.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
James, what do you think the urgency will be? Quarter
Maybe we can get in some quarterback names on the
other side, but do you think it will be I
don't know, one to ten scale, let's invest a good amount,
or do you think it'll be, Hey, we'll find a quarterback,
but we'reking ten if the resume isn't too impressive and
we think whatever Daniel Jones will continue to stay healthy.
Speaker 4 (39:44):
Yeah, scale of one to ten, I put the level
of urgency probably like a four. I probably lean towards
the end of what you just said, where they're not
going to invest a ton of like draft capital in
a backup quarterback. And honestly, I got to kick out
of somebody responding to my social media posts about these
yesterday saying, you know, if you lose Daniel Jones, the
(40:05):
season lost anyway.
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Type of thing. So we imagine saying, I know where
it's like, you don't want to necessarily invest too much
into something where you know if you're if you're if
you lose them for an extended period of time.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
Your season's over. But I do think they need to
go out and get somebody that's more experienced in Rally Leonard.
That's not I'm knocking Lelly Leonard. I think the Rally
is a fine player, and we'll be a fine player
in this league. But to go from the bench to oh,
Daniel has to miss a game or two, here's the
first place Colts like that is not a good situation
(40:36):
I think to be in. And typically the Colts have
kept three quarterbacks from they're active roster anyway, so they
got to go sign somebody.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
And just to reiterate, you know what the NFL rules
are from a quarterback standpoint, Riley Leonard had been in
the third quarterback emergency role. So the only way he
could have gotten into a football game until Sunday was
if both Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson would have had
to have leave the game due to injury. So teams,
(41:02):
this goes back to remember the NFC Championship game where
the forty nine ers have those quarterbacks get hurt and
they were literally running the wildcat. The NFL is like,
all right, enough's enough. You can dress a third quarterback.
You can't even play that guy as a wildcat guy.
So you can't have some like hybrid guy that comes
in here and just does short yarded stuff. He literally
can only get in the game due to injury. Now,
when the whole Richardson thing plays out on Sunday and
(41:24):
the chaos of pregame, the Colts don't have another quarterback
on their roster, active or practice squad. So when Richardson
was out, then Riley Leonard bumped right up to the backup,
so he was one play away. He was not. The
Colts did not have an emergency quarterback, which that's the
first time in the Stike and era they haven't utilized
that third quarterback because they didn't have anybody else healthy
(41:47):
to do that. So also the debate, and we'll see
how it plays out today when you do bring this
quarterback in. I guess if they wanted to, they could
bring him in as the third QB. But I definitely
with James on it, I don't view Riley Leonard as
a guy that you want necessarily one play away. Now,
how quickly can this new quarterback get up to speed?
(42:09):
All of that that will certainly play into it, But
by all accounts, the Colts will need a third quarterback.
It's just is that guy going to come in and
be your backup right away? Or is he going to
be behind Riley Leonard? Yeah.
Speaker 1 (42:19):
Also text line asking what kind of possibilities there are
to trade for an edge rusher or somebody get some
pressure on the quarterback. We'll talk about that throughout the
next few minutes as well. We've got Alex Golden coming
up at eight thirty to talk about the Pacers and
what they've done in the preseason so far. They've got
one preseason game left, they start the regular season after that.
We'll tell you all about those things as we continue
next It's ninety three to five and one oh seven five.
(42:42):
It's not enough that we bring you Kevin Bow and
James Boyd every day. It's not enough that we have
Caleb Zuver in here when Mark Dyton is happily sleeping
in after a Bears win somewhere in Florida. It's not
enough that we do all those things. Let you hear
Josh Downs a little while ago. But we're gonna have
Alex Golden at eight thirty to talk about the Pacers
and they have coming up this season. That said, it
was their first preseason game of the year last night,
(43:03):
and then Zach Keifer's going to stop by one of
the one of my favorite writers over at the Athletic
going to be here at nine o'clock, saw him milling
around James in the press box at the football game
on Sunday with the Colts.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Yeah, I told him to stay away. Every time he comes,
weird things happen.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
So you're blaming him for the for the crazy things.
Speaker 4 (43:20):
Absolutely, the man. You all don't understand the backstory. I've
said this many times. When I joined the Colts b
he was my co beat writer. He told me, hey, James,
the team is pretty stable. Frank Reich is great, and
nothing really ever happens with this team is going to
be a nice, smooth entry to the NFL. And in
twenty twenty two happened, and we all know that was
(43:41):
a disaster. And I told him, you're a liar, You're
a fraud. You bamboozled me. So no, I have beef
with Zach Keifer forever because of this. But no, great guy.
I'm glad that he was at the game Sunday. The
phenomenal I think piece this morning they could post on
the Athletic about Daniel Jones and some of the backstory there,
and really he got a chance to talk to Jason Garret,
his former be offensive coordinator with the Giants, and so
(44:04):
check that out. A lot of insight there. Zach's always
all over that stuff. But good to see him, and
certainly he was saying as much as I was, very weird,
but good times for these Colts who are five to one.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
Yeah, and you know, we've been talking a lot about
who's been most viable player whatever. We're only six games in.
But the more I think about it, you talk about
Daniel Jones, he's just made everything work. He's made everything go.
Does he do crazy things like Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, No,
but you know what, he's doing everything really well, Kevin,
and he's moving the chains.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
James, did you come across any quarterback name in your
research yesterday that you think Colts fans would not immediately
tell you you're an idiot that player sucks.
Speaker 3 (44:47):
I think the biggest one probably Taylor Heineke.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
I feel like Colts fans have a healthy respect for him,
especially if you remember.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
They've picked at him, but now they would be with
him exactly.
Speaker 4 (44:57):
They remember the game that he actually won here in
Lucas Oil Stadium a couple of years ago.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
I think he's beating the Colts twice right Atlanta in Atlanta,
good point years ago in Washington. So the game that
you bring.
Speaker 4 (45:06):
Up again, familiar with him. I do think he could
be like a spot starter for you. Certainly don't want
to get him the keys of the franchise by any means,
but he's a good player. He's someone that that I
think that they can, you know, sleep a little easier
if he ends up being.
Speaker 2 (45:17):
Your back up. Yeah. So the question for me comes
down to this, are you going to try and trade
for a quarterback somewhere around the league that would you
would think lead to a little bit more of a
oh okay, I kind of like that move like that,
you know, would be a little bit of a whatever.
Speaker 3 (45:31):
Higher Can I interest you in Russell Wilson? Well, yeah,
Jameis Winston.
Speaker 4 (45:37):
Jamis is on a two year deal, so I don't
think that really happened. But like, who would you trade for?
Speaker 2 (45:42):
Well, you know, again some of these guys that maybe
don't jar and immediately like why would Kansas.
Speaker 3 (45:48):
City, Like I know they wouldn't give him up.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Like you know, somebody asked me about Jimmy g in
the text ship. It was like, well, you know, Matthew
Stafford's back, why are the Rams going to do that?
Speaker 4 (45:56):
So it's funny, like you know, it's kind of hard
to get a good player for cheap Well that is
That's basically what I was going through yesterday, like, oh,
this guy's pretty good. Wait, that would cost a little
bit more than when I'm willing to give up.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
And I'll keep on coming back to this as well.
You know, when Michael Badsley was signed last week, it's
you know, something that boiled down to what probably Colts connections, right.
I mean, Michael Badgley had kicked with Luke Rohods and
Rico bertso Sanchez. Michael Badgley had been with Shane Steiken
for three years and the Chargers, So you know when
(46:27):
you say Taylor Heineke, there are some Colts connections a
little bit. First off, Shane Stiken saw him opposite in
the NFC East for a couple of years. I do
think that matters. I think Shane Stiken watching film of
you in a rather intricate way for a couple of
years would matter. Also, you know, he beat the Colts twice,
so Chris Boward obviously seen that firsthand. Couple other names
(46:48):
just to throw out there, and again some of these
might make you puke, but Colts connections. A guy that's
been kind of a longer backup in Jacksonville for a
while was CJ. Bethard from Iowa. Jim Bob Cooter, the
Holds offensive coordinator, was in Jacksonville for a year. Bethard
currently is on the Lions practice squad, so you would
need to sign him off the practice squad to your
(47:09):
active roster, which is something we see happen. The Colts
did it a few weeks ago with a linebacker from Dallas,
Easton Stick. He is part of that North Dakota State tree,
if you will, of quarterbacks. He was actually a draft
pick of the Chargers when Shane Steichen was with the Chargers.
He's currently on Atlanta's practice squad. So, you know, again,
(47:33):
a couple names. I don't know about. Desmond Ritter. You
know he did spend a few days here. It was
a mini camp tryout back in mid June. You know,
would that I don't want to pretend like he got,
you know, very deep into the Colts playbook when he
was here for a few days. But clearly the Colts
were curious about him in the summer, would they be
(47:53):
you know curious about him again here in mid October?
So those are just a few of the names that
can wise I think you throw out there.
Speaker 1 (48:03):
Yeah, and also people want to know with trade deadline
coming up, and we talked about it a little bit yesterday,
is their pass rush help out there? And I know
everybody wants to go swing big and what's Max Crosby doing?
But I don't know that a they could afford Max
Crosby or if he's even available, and what that would
even possibly take. But what are some of the realistic options?
Is there a Bradley Chubb that might be a guy
(48:25):
that's available that has shown the ability to put pressure
on quarterbacks and could be had for less than certainly
what a Max Crosby is, or we're talking about maybe
just people that could help out a little bit. James,
is that even a possibility right now?
Speaker 3 (48:41):
I think you certainly should entertain it.
Speaker 4 (48:44):
But yeah, as far as Max Crosby, No, they're not
going to trade for Max Crosby.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
He just signed a huge extension.
Speaker 4 (48:51):
He costs a lot of money, and he's also been
like loyal to a fault, I would say to the Raiders,
who are god awful. So no, that does not seem
realistic at all, even in the slightest I guess the
name that and I'm not saying this is even.
Speaker 3 (49:04):
A real thought.
Speaker 4 (49:06):
But social media has ways of bringing up names, Trey
Hendrickson being one of them, and him being on a
one year deal with the Bengals. The Bengals stink. He's
also aging, so would you make a move for him?
But the thought there is that you're doing that literally
just just cash in for this year because then he
would become a free agent afterwards. I would not necessarily
(49:27):
want to trade for him and give him a bunch
of money because he's.
Speaker 3 (49:30):
An older player.
Speaker 4 (49:30):
So yeah, that's an idea as well. But yeah, I
do think the next couple weeks will kind of inform
a lot when it comes to what the Colts might do.
Because if you look up after the next two games
and you're seven and one, do you say, hey, this
is our shot to do something special this year, because
(49:50):
then you go from being a feel good story. So
wait a second, we're a pretty good team. And even
if you're six and two, you know, heading into your
last game before the bye week, you know, going overseas
to face the Falcons, who had a pretty good game yesterday.
I think that certainly is a conversation that garners more
validity than I think before.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
It's honestly something where I could probably talk myself into
a trade at three different positions in the defense. I
could talk myself into pass rusher. Certainly I could talk
myself into a linebacker upgrade and corner given the depth there.
So you know, three weeks from today is a trade deadline.
Do you do something right now? Do you sit back
(50:32):
and wait? Again? Are you investing a draft pick quarterback
wise at all into trying to find a backup here? James,
you got this from Thomas. Thomas goes, what's wrong with
Riley Leonard? It's a four week backup job? Come on?
Do you think do you view it in that light
like it's fine, you got Riley Leonard. You're letting it
Notre Dame to the national title last year. You see
(50:54):
him in the preseason game against Cincinnati.
Speaker 4 (50:56):
No, I'm not with that at all. A lot of
players look great in the preseason. I mean, to be honest,
bringing back Jason Bean, I mean, Sam Ellener is probably
a name we could throw out there as well, someone
who knows Shane and it has proven to be a
very professional quarterback in this league. But no, I do
not think that is a smart tactic, mainly because and
(51:18):
not to be like bogus, but when you get to
the NFL, I truly do not care who did in
college anymore. I mean, great, you led Notre Dame to
the national championship. Will Howard won the national championship. Neither
one of them are starting quarterbacks in the NFL, and
no one thought that when they left college. So yeah,
could he be a spot starter someday? Yes, I just
(51:39):
think that you're putting too much on the guy fresh
out of the gate.
Speaker 3 (51:42):
That to me is just not wise.
Speaker 4 (51:45):
And it's funny because we did a story yesterday on
the IR injury update with Anthony Richardson, and someone on
our editing staff must be a Notre Dame person or
mostly a big, big ry Leonard fan, because they put
in like this random paragraph about he was like preseason
all acc and I.
Speaker 3 (52:03):
Went back and was like, who cares? Cut that out like.
Speaker 4 (52:07):
Yeah, we can mention the national championship part that I
think is significant, but like preseason, all acc good leader, whatever,
can you play football in the NFL. He's not proven to
do that. I don't think you should do like just
throw it to him. If you can find someone who's
at least done it relatively well or in a spot
here or there, I'm gonna have some experience in that department.
Speaker 2 (52:27):
And I think the question becomes this, if you look
at the Colts schedule upcoming here the rest of the
way I was looking at it last night, I want
to say, of the eleven teams you have left, eight
are currently at five hundred or better. So eight of
the eleven right now are a five hundred football team.
More better, if you look at the three games you
(52:47):
would play to teams below five hundred, two of those
three are Houston, which I don't think we look at
Houston as like laughingstock bad right, No.
Speaker 1 (52:56):
We probably think that they're going to be at least
a nine to eight team before where the season's over.
Speaker 2 (53:00):
Well, and again if CJ. Strout's healthy, like, it's still
very competent even if they aren't necessarily their record wise
and who knows, maybe they're now starting to find a
little bit of their groove. They had to buy this
past week. So the schedule is undoubtedly getting tougher. And
you know, do you view it as Hey, if Daniel
Jones were to be lost for three to four weeks,
(53:21):
does a quarterback move Let's let's call it four weeks?
If Riley Lenard's going to go one and three, does
the backup quarterback the other guy? Could that guy go too?
And two? And is that the difference between winning the
AFC South and not? I mean, I know we're kind
of getting into the weeds a little bit here, but
I think that's how you have to view it of
(53:41):
is that player going to is one game going to
be the difference? And when Jacksonville's sitting there one game
behind you right now in the division, you still have
two more games with them down the stretch. I think
these are all conversations that the Colts have to have
inside of their building today and we'll see how it
exactly plays out.
Speaker 1 (53:58):
One last one for you, Wes Texas in at two, three, nine,
ten seventy on the fan text line says Sam hell
Is Sam Howell is Philadelphia quarterback three, Maybe he's cheap.
Is that a guy you'd look at?
Speaker 4 (54:08):
They always trade, so perhaps that is somebody to think about.
I think what Tamer m Key's all over there as well.
So yeah, it just comes down how do you want
to pursue it. Do you want to be very cheap
and say, hey, just get me somebody that I don't
have to spend too much money on who's a free agent,
or I could pick up off of a practice squad.
Or do I want to invest a little bit more
there to be a little more sure of myself in
(54:29):
case anything happens to Daniel Jones, which, Lord have mercy,
let's not even speak those words, right.
Speaker 1 (54:34):
Yeah, And for the people that are texting in and
talking about that, we really need to spend all this
time and energy thinking about a backup quarterback for a
team that's five and one, Yes, because what happens if
Daniel Zones even has to miss a half or a
game and a half or something like that. Every win
is going to count for a team that all of
a sudden has designs on doing something special this year.
Speaker 2 (54:55):
Kevin, We'll see too if the Colts bring that player
right away out of the fifty three minut oster Richardson
News yesterday to IR they brought in a undrafted I
think corner safety from the sounds of it, Ruben Lowry,
who played in Baltimore this year. Undersized but super smart dude,
and we'll see exactly how he fits. So clearly they're
(55:17):
trying to churn even more corner They continue to work
out corners. They continue to work out veteran corners. But
that was the roster move yesterday. For those that did
see Richardson dadd reserve. The Colts filled it, but not
with a quarterback with a kind of a corner safety.
So again that will play out today exactly what they
do at quarterback. They could just go practice squad and
you know, bump that guy up a couple of weeks
(55:37):
and then you know, kick the can down the road
for a bigger decision there.
Speaker 1 (55:41):
Yeah, you tall, you undersize it. What was he like
five nine two four or something?
Speaker 2 (55:44):
Yeah, I want to see Tennessee Chattanooga comes to mind
of where he played collegiately, put up some big time numbers.
Mechanical engineering degree ro OTC. I mean, sounds like a
really smart individual but undersized and was playing but played
a ton of stamps for Baltimore few weeks ago. Obviously
Baltimore really banged up. So any move at corner safety
(56:07):
right now, particularly corner right now, I don't gloss over
because they need corners. So who knows if this guy
could get up to speed as quickly as Sunday.
Speaker 1 (56:14):
Maybe you just hope you keep bringing people in. Somebody's
gonna stick and it's gonna work out. Because, like we said,
love Jacoby Brissette, but man, he looked awfully good against
the cult secondary this past week. And I don't know
how much that was just Jacoby on a day and
how much of it was just there needs to be
some work done in that secondary.
Speaker 4 (56:30):
Jeff is saying, Jacoby, you should have just kept your
bags here. Okay, let's just make the tray for him,
and everyone's feeling great.
Speaker 1 (56:36):
I'd be happy with Jacobe is the backup quarterback, I know.
Speaker 3 (56:39):
But again, like I said, and then it costs a
lot of things, you know, to go get him.
Speaker 4 (56:42):
So yeah, I think the options have to be a
little bit, you know, lower, The experctise had to be
a little bit lower on who they bring in.
Speaker 1 (56:49):
Yeah, all right, So that's what's happening with the cults.
The Pacers played last night. Let's give you all the
details on everything else you need to know. We call
it the morning Check James. So the culture off today
and we'll just keep it on whether or not they
bring quarterbacks in or take a look at that market today.
Speaker 4 (57:03):
Right, Yeah, that is certainly the big news after Anthony
Richardson went on IR yesterday due to an orbital fracture
he sustained due to a stretching injury he had in
the locker room before the game Sunday.
Speaker 3 (57:15):
And just to clarify, it wasn't the band.
Speaker 4 (57:18):
He had the band attached to something in the locker
room and that something broke and it recoiled to hit
him in the face.
Speaker 3 (57:24):
And so for people who are like, ha ha, how
did that happen?
Speaker 4 (57:27):
Like, man, imagine someone just throwing a baseball full speed
at your face Like that is essentially how it happened.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
Very fluke thing, very unfortunate for him.
Speaker 4 (57:37):
But just to clarify there for people who are who
thinks it's just like you know, this guy's mid a
class Like na, man, you get hitting the face that hard,
anybody's face is gonna break.
Speaker 1 (57:44):
We'll get more information on a bunch of things later
on this week. Kevin, how close were we to get
in Kenny Moore the second back last week?
Speaker 2 (57:50):
He was doing some field work when we were out there, James,
I think it was Friday. He was doing some lateral
field work. But still he is yet to practice and
it's now three straight weeks, nine practices total, three games.
I would you know it is three days enough of practice?
Is this an injury that was more severe to where
you'd want multiple weeks? If you go just basically based
(58:11):
off of they didn't put him on injury reserve, then
Sunday he should be back. That would be his fourth
game that you know he would miss. So it's a
big one because you know, I think you're facing a
Chargers team that has some definite injury issues, but they
could be getting a little healthier at wide out and
we know what Justin Herbert can do, so obviously that'll
be a big one to watch this week. And by
all accounts, the Colts didn't have anybody get hurt in
(58:32):
the game. We'll see how that plays out tomorrow practice, but.
Speaker 1 (58:36):
It was before the game or pre game. Yeah, everybody's
gonna start wearing bubble wrap and all their helmets during
all the pregame routines. Now two games on Monday Night Football.
Last night, Atlanta Falcons beat the Buffalo Bills twenty four
to fourteen. Bshon Robinson ran wild one hundred and seventy
yards and eighty one yard touchdowns. Camper six catches sixty
(58:56):
eight yards. Josh Allen struggled a little bit, just one
hundred and eighty yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions,
and they just couldn't get it going against the Falcons,
who have improved to three and two right now, and
after the game, James Michael Pennix said, this team's legit.
Don't go to sleep on the Falcons quite yet. We
start paying attention to them in the NFC South.
Speaker 3 (59:15):
I feel like they're always right there.
Speaker 4 (59:16):
That division kind of stanks year in and year out,
so they always have a chance to kind of be
in the mix. And so yeah, going from being losing
thirty to nothing to the Panthers to what they did
last night, it certainly feels the ViBe's a lot different
in Atlanta right now.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
Jake Mudy hit a thirty eight yard game winning field
goal as time expired and the Bears win in Washington
twenty five to twenty four. Mark Dyketon happy doing his
happy dance somewhere. But a nice revenge game for the Bears,
who gave up that crazy play in the loss to
the Commanders a year ago. Kevin, people remember that one.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
Yeah, So Mark Dyketon, I guess I heard that he
got another week of vacation once that field goal went
in last night. So Caleb will need you for another
week here, Jeff, Jeff just off on five more days
for Mark Dydon to go to Disney World.
Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
It's no problem with me. Yeah, you work here for
a long time, you just start racking apparently, Marcus two
hundred and fourteen pto days. I don't know. I don't
even know how that works.
Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
Let's have the right last name with some people in
this building.
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
That's it, all right. The Indiana Pacers at home last
night at the field House. They lose to the Spurs
one twenty four to one oh eight, a meaningless preseason
game except for the fact that Benedict Matherin we already
know can score in bunches. James went off for twenty
seven in the first half, thirty one for the game.
They did lose, but that's man. If Benedict Matherin can
(01:00:33):
become instant scoring on a consistent basis, pretty interesting things
happening for the Pacers.
Speaker 4 (01:00:39):
Yeah, I will say that he can. He's been proving
himself as a scorer since he got in the NBA.
He can score the best of them. It's just the
other things.
Speaker 3 (01:00:46):
I know.
Speaker 4 (01:00:47):
Listening to the halftime show, Yeah, on Fantom Sports Network,
Rick Carlo'll talked a lot about how they believe he's
gonna have to draw some of the bigger defensive assignments
this year, especially on the wing, considering that you don't
want to put a lot of that on Andrew Nemhardt
as a lead guard. So I'm curious to see how
Benedict embraces that part of his game because he has
the physical tools to do it. But yeah, I think
(01:01:08):
the bread and butter at the end of the day
will always be him scoring the basketball. Does that in
his sleep, and you know, if he scores at that rate,
he'll be looking at a nice extension at some point,
I would imagine.
Speaker 1 (01:01:17):
You know, James, I saw that clip with Rick Carlisle
at half time last night too. I thought it was
very interesting in the middle of that, when he was
talking about the defense that Maverin's gonna have to play,
he said early in games, which made me believe that
you give him a lot of that defensive work early
in the game, but when it comes crunch time, maybe
in the fourth quarter, now you switch back to your
defensive lockdown with them heart something like that. Maybe we'll
(01:01:38):
see certainly something to keep an eye on.
Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
But yeah, like you pointed out earlier in the show,
the centers were bad, and I'm looking at a stats
like the little what is it the play by play
tracker from the third quarter yesterday. Here is what Isaiah
Jackson did in a matter of three seconds, personal foul,
personal foul, personal foul, pacers call time out.
Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
The four centers, is say Jackson, Jay Huff, Tony Bradley,
James Wiseman, collective ten last night? No, none of that's
good Man had.
Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
Three fouls, none of literally three seconds.
Speaker 2 (01:02:11):
Like that's thirty seven preseason minutes for Isaiah Jackson, nine fouls.
And I don't think Jay Huffs could much better in
terms of defending without fouling.
Speaker 4 (01:02:18):
So I knew they were taking a step back without
Miles And this is just kind of, you know, reaffirst
that a little bit early.
Speaker 3 (01:02:24):
It's early for them as well, but like.
Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
They should reach Smith's behind the bench last night, I
thought anything anything left in the tank?
Speaker 1 (01:02:29):
Yeah for the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:30):
Six minutes, six minutes, he ain't even got that. I'll
just take defending without falling. I'm not asking for a
hook shot.
Speaker 1 (01:02:38):
Pacers will finish up their preseason schedule Friday night in
San Antonio, and then they get ready to once again
play the Oklahoma City Thunder, who they just played like
every other game, now, don't they there you go, yeah,
all right, So Major League Baseball last night the American
League National League Championship Series both took place Game two
of the ALCS. The Mariners got the hitting clubs at
(01:03:00):
club the Toronto Blue Jays ten to three. Julio Rodriguez
Jorge Polanco each had three run home runs. Josh Naylor
hit a two run shot, and they get the win
there to take a two games to none of the
Brewers two to one, and Blake Snell eight innings, no runs,
one hit, no walks, ten strikeouts. I think that's pretty
good right there, James, especially in that spot, not bad.
Speaker 3 (01:03:22):
A lot of pressure in those spots and he showed up.
Speaker 1 (01:03:24):
Yeah, and later on tonight, Game two of the National
League Championship Series starts at eight oh eight. The ALCS
is off as they traveled back to Seattle to Mariners
with the two games to none lead. High school rankings
are out this week from the USA today. Not much
change amongst the top teams in six A. It's still
Brownsburg number one, New Palace number one in five A,
Bishops Chatard number one in four A. Top ranked teams
(01:03:48):
in three A, two A and one A are Evansville Memorial,
Adam Central, and Springs Valley, respectively. So anything else you
guys want to throw in. I know there was a
firing yesterday James in the National Football.
Speaker 2 (01:04:00):
Well, Larry Birds, Springs Valley.
Speaker 4 (01:04:02):
I would not know, honestly shout out, But as far
as the firing goes, yeah, Brian Callahan is out for
the Titans and Kevin I'm not surprised by the move
at all, Honestly, when you lose.
Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
Why the hell that.
Speaker 1 (01:04:22):
It felt like a power struggle at the top, Like joke.
Speaker 4 (01:04:26):
They are and they're setting themselves up to be in
this position again in a couple of years.
Speaker 3 (01:04:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:04:31):
How cam Ward develops now and we'll see, but I
think maybe the the straw that broke the Cammel's back.
And I'm not in Tennessee, but hearing Callahan's comments last
week about you know, hey, everyone's got to get better.
We want to see some progress, and he'd like pointed
out cam Ward and was like he needs to get
better news, I'm like, man, you don't want to start
coming at your first round pick, you number one pick.
Speaker 3 (01:04:51):
I mean, you're the guy whos supposed to be developing him.
So now he's out.
Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
Of a job. And by all accounts, Brian Callahan was
pretty deep as a finalist here in Indy, which you know,
is kind of great to see. How obviously all that's
played out. Purdue number one in the preseason poll for
college basketball. First place votes go to Matt Painters. Bunch
Houston second with sixteen first place votes, Florida eight, Yukon two.
There's your top four there. Matt Painters already said, feels
(01:05:17):
like the depth, that's what's a little different about this
Purdue team and why he feels like this is indeed
the best national title contending team he has had of
they could withstand something that, you know, maybe prior years
they had a little bit of a smaller margin for air.
Other Big Ten teams Michigan seven, UCLA twelve, Illinois seventeen,
(01:05:37):
Michigan State twenty two, the Badgers at twenty four. Indiana
got oon vote, and if you add all that up,
that would be the forty third place team in the nation,
the Hoosiers with Darren Devriez.
Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
I'm still not used to I know it's been a
while now, I'm still not used to UCLA USC Oregon
in the Big Ten. I'm just not there yet.
Speaker 2 (01:05:59):
I don't know if I'm used to being the big
tim It's.
Speaker 1 (01:06:03):
It's been a minute night. You're right, I'm so used
to the Chargers being in la bout saying.
Speaker 3 (01:06:08):
It's been a while for both of those things.
Speaker 1 (01:06:09):
Guys, Uh, Kevin Irons slow to come around on some things, James,
That's all it is.
Speaker 3 (01:06:14):
Get with the Times.
Speaker 1 (01:06:17):
The Times will feature Alex Golden, who setting the pace
as one of the leading podcasters when it comes to
the Indiana Pacers and kind enough to join us with
his unique perspective coming up in a moment here. We'll
also have the Pacers playback for you, debuting is we
continue on on a Tuesday morning. It's ninety three five
and one oh seven five. The fan.
Speaker 8 (01:06:39):
Pacers have two seconds to get a shot and Mathering
concludes a brilliant first half with a three from out
near the left hash mark.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
He made every shut in this head. Believe the way
for the Pacers with thirty one points. Time for our
Pacers playback after every game presented by C and Jay Water,
the official water treatment partner of the Indiana Pacers CNJ
Water James, he was terrific last night, thirty one points
in all, slowed down in the second half, didn't play
a ton there, but he could not miss in the
(01:07:09):
first quarter of last night's basketball game.
Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
Hey is what he does, man bucket getter, special guy.
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
Yeah, he was, and so we'll keep an eye on
him as the preseason rolls on. The Spurs did win
one twenty four to one oh eight. And here to
tell us more about that, one of our favorite guests
joining us on the Payloss Slickers hotline. That, of course
would be the one the only Alex Golden. Good morning, Alex,
how was your preseason extravaganza last night?
Speaker 8 (01:07:33):
It was a little bit more entertaining than I would
say Saturday night's still it against the Thunder or I
should say the Okase Blue since they didn't bring ten
other guys. But yeah, it was It was good to
see some of the starters play more more minutes, and
we saw one miniata Eve been playing in the fourth quarter,
so a little bit more of a competitive game to
kind of get a better evaluation of what this team
looks like.
Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
Alex, what the hell do you do at center? It's
been fouling and fouling and fouling and not scoring or rebounding.
Speaker 8 (01:08:01):
It's not been good, Kevin, I'll tell you that. And
I think Facer fans, while they are not happy that
Miles Turner left for Milwaukee and feel like things could
be better without him, I think they might be wishing
Miles Turner was still in this crosstart. I mean, you
got to give a little bit of you know, context
here with just Wiseman and Jackson coming back from injuries.
Jay Huffs really has not been a part of this
system at all, and when he played with the starters
(01:08:23):
last night, ran into Siakam at one point, just didn't
really know what to do. Him and Matthurn we're having
conversations and where he's supposed to be at. So I
think it's all just a learning curve. It's still really early,
so don't want to write them off completely yet, but
I think this is a big year for the Pacers
to see if they have anything at center with this.
I would first three games as a player that's probably
looked the most consistent is the guy that's probably gonna
(01:08:43):
get cut, and that's Tony Bradley. So I just I
have not been impressed, and the fouling has been an
issue for me, and just the floor space and that
they're used to with Turner. They don't have that anymore.
Jay huff O four from three in the preseason so far.
So yeah, it's it's not been great, but I think
they just have to give it some time, give it
some sure, maybe something'll play out. Right now, I am
not overly impressed.
Speaker 2 (01:09:04):
If they played a real game tomorrow. By the way,
Alex Golden setting the pace a great listen for Pacers
fans out there his podcast. He's with us here on
the Payloft Sickars top line, if they played a real
game tomorrow, would their best lineup be Obi topping at
the five? Kind of small ball like we saw a
little bit in the playoffs.
Speaker 8 (01:09:18):
Oh yeah, I mean they did that a little bit
last night too. The Spurs were playing some zone and
they went to Obi Top and at the five and
the pacers. I think we're like a plus two and
like three and a half minutes of that group together.
So we might get to some point in the season
where it's just like, you know what, start Obi Top
and I mean, if they're really trying to win games
and things like that, it's going to make a huge difference.
But one thing to me that really plays a huge
(01:09:40):
factor in just the centers and how they will all
be utilized is not having TJ McConnell. Right now, TJ
mcconnald does so much for that center position with his
ability to get into the paint and push pace. So
I think as you have a new point guarding camera
Pagne trying to learn things a little bit, it is
kind of like stagnating the offense and what they're trying
to do. So yeah, I just think not having the
(01:10:00):
is going to be a huge impact for a lot
of what this team does. But overall, I just yeah,
they they I think Obi Topping is clearly the best
you know starting center at this point on the roster, Alex, what.
Speaker 4 (01:10:12):
Has been your impression of Jeris Walker so far throughout
the preseason?
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
And I know kind of up and down last night.
Five turnover is not great.
Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
But if we're looking at steps, you want to see
the Pacers take on't imagine he's a big part of that.
Speaker 8 (01:10:26):
Yeah, for sure. I think we've seen more good stuff
from jarifs and bad stuff throughout the preseason. I wasn't
overly impressed with his first game against Minnesota. I thought
he had a nice shooting game against Minnesota, and then
if you look at his performance against OKC, I thought
that was probably one of his better ones, almost at
a triple double in that game. And then last night
he had a really really strong third quarter, and then
(01:10:46):
in the fourth quarter they threw him out there with
a random group and had him playing some point guard
at one point. So for me when it comes to
Jaris Walker, I just want to see him play with
a consistent level of force and not take plays off.
We've seen some bad passes, we seeing them not getting
back on defense and things like that. But if he
can just play the right way, play good defense, fit
into the system, take the open shots when they're there,
(01:11:08):
it's gonna be great. He had to move on Saturday
against ok See that looked very Pascal Siakam esque in
the second quarter. And if he can do more things
like that quick decisions when he gets to basketball, like
I'm gonna go to the basket, I'm gonna score versus
let me wait and think about this for a second.
I think that's going to help him as well.
Speaker 2 (01:11:24):
Alex.
Speaker 1 (01:11:25):
Just before you came on, we were talking about some
things that Rick Carlisle said during the halftime of last
night's broadcast regarding Benedict Matherin and what his role might
be and what the guard position is going to look
like without Tyrese Hollim Burton, and the fact that that
maybe Matherin takes on a few more defensive responsibilities, certainly
at the beginning of a game, and in addition to
(01:11:46):
some of the scoring. What his role looks like coming
into this season.
Speaker 8 (01:11:51):
Yeah, they're gonna be They're gonna need a lot of
Matherin and a lot of good Materron for this team
to have any success because Matherin obviously at the two guard.
Right now, you're so thin that Taylan Peter. A guy
on a two way contracts your backup, So they just
really need him to step up and do a little
bit more. We know he can do a lot of stuff.
Offensive I don't think that's ever going to be a
problem for him. But defensively, I think that they're getting
(01:12:11):
him some reps. If you look at the first game
against Minnesota, he was guarding Anthony Edwards. Is the second
game against the Thunder, he was guarding Case and Wallace.
So they're having him guard some of the better guards
out there just to try and see what he can do.
And I think he's a better on ball defender than
he is an off ball defender, because he gets lost
a little bit playing off ball, but on ball he's
a little bit more locked in and engaged. He just
(01:12:32):
has to learn how to navigate those screens and fight
through that. But I think he's gotten better. And then offensively,
one thing that maybe doesn't stick out in terms of
like stats or anything like that, but one thing I've
noticed is his passing has looked better. One of the
first players against the Thunder on Saturday, he's through a
great bounce pass lead pass to Isaiah Jackson as a
ball was swinging around and Jimmy boost six teams up
off the bench starts clapping because it was a great pass,
(01:12:53):
and so they want to see him do.
Speaker 1 (01:12:54):
More of that.
Speaker 8 (01:12:55):
We know he can score the basketball last night eleven
to twelve for thirty one points, like unbelievable twenty three
minutes of play, So.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
We know we can do that.
Speaker 8 (01:13:02):
But just those quick reads and then playing better defense.
I think that's gonna be his role, and I think
he's gonna play probably close to thirty thirty two minutes tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:13:09):
Alex Is Pascal Siakam like Steph Curry now because he's
just knocking down threes that are extremely high rate.
Speaker 3 (01:13:15):
Shot it at thirty eight percent last year, career high.
Speaker 4 (01:13:18):
But what do you say from him to, you know,
take the reins more offensively now Tyrey's Taliburton is not
going to play this year.
Speaker 8 (01:13:25):
Yeah, we just got to see more of a heavy
dose of Fiakam than we've seen in the last two seasons.
I feel like last year, a lot of times we
would see in the regular season Pascal have a really
strong half, be in the first or second half, but
it was never like the entirety of the game. And
I think we have to do the Pacers have to
do about getting him more involved throughout the entirety of
the game where they can really just forsweat him to basketball.
(01:13:46):
I mean, not overly do it, right. They still going
to play it in their system. But like you said,
he's shot the ball incredibly well since coming here. He's
really worked on a shot and I feel like he's
gonna make it more than he's gonna miss it when
when he pulls it. And then just his ability to
use the footwork. There was a great play last night
early in the game when he had Victor Wiminiama on
him and seven foot five freak, and you know he
(01:14:07):
uses his footwork to create enough space and get a
jump over him. That's how special of a talent Pascal
Siakami is. So he's gonna have to take the reins,
and I mean he might need to score close to
twenty five points a night for this team to really
consider themselves the playoff team.
Speaker 4 (01:14:21):
Alex, after he made that shot a fotog, make sure
you send that to me right away immediately, because I mean,
you see how the other weird plays that happened throughout
that game, Like how about the the putback from Wimby
in the paint on Jay Huff where he barely jumped.
Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
What what are we doing? Well, yeah, I'm not gonna lie.
Speaker 8 (01:14:41):
He walked by me three times last night back by
the media area, and I literally was just shocked. I
couldn't I couldn't believe what I was seeing. And I
actually tried to take a picture of him as I
was like walking into the media room. We were coming
off the elevators, he was coming down the hallway. I
tried to take a picture of him and be sneaky
about it. He caught me and smiled at me. So
it's pretty embarrassing. It's just like, this guy is such
(01:15:01):
a freak. It's crazy, like that foot back duck, like
you're mentioning. I don't even think he jumped, so he didn't.
He's like playing on a little Tykes basketball goal and
everybody else's yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:15:10):
Guys, this is you and your son, this is this
You're showing him how to do things, And I'm like,
this is a grown man out here just sunning the pacers.
So I still have my Whimby to Indie shirts somewhere
in the basement. Uh, you know, I'm still still pushing
for that. You know, in an alternate reality.
Speaker 8 (01:15:26):
I think that would have been a second favorite team
to go to. I mean, he likes the Pacers, so
it was I think the Pacers were one lottery ball
away from getting number one overall picking.
Speaker 6 (01:15:33):
That year's draft.
Speaker 8 (01:15:34):
So just a little bit more heartbreak for Pacer fans.
But yeah, Rick Carlisle, I thought he was just hilarious
talking about him. Said, you're just watching disbelief. That's the
scouting report, and he said, I'm glad he's in the.
Speaker 1 (01:15:44):
West Man oh Man twice a year is all. But
they will see him Friday night in their final preseason game.
That'll be in San Antonio. Alex, thanks for spending time
with us this morning. As always, we appreciate you.
Speaker 8 (01:15:54):
Yeah any time, guys, Thank you so much.
Speaker 1 (01:15:56):
You guys can do Alex on setting the pace where
you can find that, where you can get podcasts, certainly
on Spotify as where I usually go to get it
as well. That's a look at the Pacers losing last
night one twenty four, one oh eight to the San
Antonio Spurs. Again. Benedict Matherin had thirty one points Andrew
Nemhard was eleven points. Eight assists and a big zero
for the four setters Jackson Huff, Bradley Wiseman, O frit
(01:16:20):
and a lot of fouls to especially when PACER's playback
presented by CNJ Water, the official water treatment partner of
the Indiana Pacers cnjwater dot Com. All right, you get
your voice on. We'll check the fan text line in
a moment at two three nine tens two three eight
ten seventy, and then we'll also talk a little bit
more about the cults. Was that three nine seventy? What
(01:16:40):
did I say? Two three eight? Yeah, I'm nine to
Once we get past dight thirty keven, you got to
carry me, so that's working these days. We'll do that
next at ninety three five and one oh seven five.
The Fan got a good chumping going this morning. Welcome
into the Fan Morning Show. If you're just joining us,
thank you so much. However you might be listening ninety
three five one oh seven five the Fan on FM.
(01:17:01):
Also again Blowtorch on the FM ninety three point one
HD two. If you have the HD on your radio
and most newer cars do, just one click to the
right of ninety three point one on it you can
get that signal just about anywhere. You can find us
at one one o seven five Thefan dot com, you
can download the app. There's just all different kinds of
ways you can even say. And Kevin likes to mess
(01:17:23):
with you guys out there. Alexa play one oh seven
five the Fan and you'll get that. Alexa play knuck.
Speaker 2 (01:17:29):
If you buck, you.
Speaker 1 (01:17:34):
Just upset a lot of people trying to quietly listen
to us in their cubicle at work. Kevin, I like it,
did you.
Speaker 2 (01:17:40):
Guys catch were you watching the start of Indiana organ Like,
did you catch like them introing into the game. Yeah,
I loved the CBS intro They did like you know,
overshot of ims and then they did heywood Field, which
you know, I think people for the most part sports
fans realize that Eugene is kind of the the track
(01:18:01):
capital of the United States. If you a lot of
US Olympic trials there, a lot of US championships are
there from a track and field.
Speaker 3 (01:18:09):
So learned a lot about this from Larra Overton.
Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Yes, like second home out there. Yeah, with everything she's
done from a track and field standpoint, So uh, it
was a really cool like you know, speed speed, speed
all of this, and as soon as CBS hits that
college football intro, oh my gosh, I'm ready through a
brick wall that is of all the intros. And again
(01:18:31):
I'm a Master's theme song guy that can kind of
put you to sleep. But you know it's great. Obviously,
the March Madness intro. I think the CBS college football
intro is the best sports intro out there, and even
better than NBA on NBC, which now we get it
back starting a year.
Speaker 1 (01:18:47):
Okay, I have a tie for first. I love the
CBS College football does give me goosebumps every time. I'm
still a sucker for the ESPN National Hockey League. You
do that during the Stanley Cup playoffs and I'm my
my vertical leap increases by about two hundred percent, right.
Speaker 2 (01:19:03):
I mean literally, as soon as they played that on Saturday,
I said out loud, send me to Heaven. I was good.
I didn't need to watch the game.
Speaker 3 (01:19:11):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 4 (01:19:12):
Those IU fans are certainly in heaven out there in
Oregon watching that game. I can only imagine the flight back.
Speaker 1 (01:19:18):
What a time. Kevin, we love you. This is for you.
Get to go, You get to go. Come on, I
mean I loved it.
Speaker 3 (01:19:31):
I loved it.
Speaker 1 (01:19:32):
Oh man man, thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:19:34):
Caleb injected into my vein Aiden Fisher. I saw a
big ten defensive player of the week, very well deserved,
very deserving.
Speaker 1 (01:19:41):
It should be the Universe Defensive Player of the Week
at some point today.
Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
Caleb that audio, that Aiden Fisher audio. Maybe we don't
need to play it now. I know we got Zach
Keith for coming up in a few but I thought
he had a quote post game they just kind of
really stood out about you. Again, He's a JMU guy
about Signetti and what needed to change with the IU
program and all of that. And I think it's one
thing for your head coach to walk in there and
(01:20:07):
say it all. But I think when you have players
that are good that also carry that same message, I
think that resonates probably more across one hundred person locker room.
Speaker 1 (01:20:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:20:16):
I think Aiden should have win in there him like
he wasn't gonna win without me. So be glad that
I'm here is too, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
Yeah, I don't know where Adan Fisher and Elijah Surratt
will be drafted, but those two dudes should play in
the NFL for a long time, you.
Speaker 1 (01:20:29):
Know, I saw kurtzik Nutty talking to Danny Knell on
CBS Believe It or Not at CBS dot Com about
how he recruits players, and he said, I've never really
been one. I don't care about stars. I just it
does not my thing. I look at kids and I say,
can I is that a kid that I can develop?
Does he have traits that I like that? I think, oh, man,
I can see that kid in two years. He is
(01:20:51):
going to be something. He goes. Sometimes they're four and
five star recruits. Sometimes they're no stars. But I just
I have an idea what it is that I'm looking
for and who I can develop.
Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
I'll tell you what, though, when it comes to developing,
you still want to develop some stars.
Speaker 4 (01:21:04):
You want to have that on the resume for sure.
So I agree with his overall sentiment. But with the
way I you was rolling, it probably won't even be
as hard to pitch them or sell them on. Getting
some of those bigger name players to stay home and
look at the talent that we have here in Indiana.
There's always somebody from somewhere on some team from the
state of Indiana. But if you can keep more of
(01:21:25):
those guys in your pipeline. I think that will help
you continue this resurgence that we've seen to the point
where we're not looking at it as a resurgenist and
more so just as a standard.
Speaker 1 (01:21:34):
Yeah, let's check the text line down of the fan
text line two three, nine, ten seventy. Kevin, there you go,
Thank you very much, and a lot of this this morning, Zach.
I'm gonna let you speak for a ton of Texters today.
Good morning, guys. Why not call up Gilmore to help
the secondary Ken't you said that's something you could get behind.
Speaker 2 (01:21:51):
Not artists, Gilmore, not Gus Gilmore, that great golfer, that
would be Stefan I assume. Yeah, he's still out there,
right thirty? Is he thirty five?
Speaker 1 (01:22:00):
We've already taken a swing on a couple of older guys.
Speaker 2 (01:22:02):
Right, I mean they continue. They worked out Levi Wallace yesterday.
An older corner they've worked out. Who was it last week?
James Lewis Klein at safety. There was another veteran corner
they worked There was a Kendall Fuller. Yes, yeah, boy,
they're working out all of them.
Speaker 1 (01:22:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:22:15):
Gilmore has been a popular name, and again he defies
the odds of older corners. You know, all these older
corners seemingly fall off a cliff, and he's the one
that's like, no, no, no, I still got it. So
three weeks from today and you know again, what position cornerback, linebacker,
edge rusher. If you could only trade for one, what
(01:22:36):
would you do? Gil Moore would be a signing.
Speaker 1 (01:22:38):
But you start putting the pressure on people, the secondary
gets a whole lot better.
Speaker 2 (01:22:42):
It's amazing how much they've invested into that defensive line room.
I believe it's the highest paid group in the NFL.
You have three first round picks, I think it's three seconds,
maybe it might be two seconds, two thirds and two fourths.
When you have nine dudes in that room, all top
four round picks, three of them in round one, and yet.
Speaker 1 (01:23:02):
One of them can't even get the active right now.
Speaker 2 (01:23:05):
I feel like your pass rush is.
Speaker 3 (01:23:06):
Just Yeah a good point from Jeff J T.
Speaker 4 (01:23:08):
Twouoloile second round pick still not playing at this point
of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:23:12):
Or so, he was a healthy scratch on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:23:15):
Yeah, I would probably lean towards getting a pass rusher.
I mean, you look at who gets paid in this league.
It's quarterbacks and then the guys who get after quarterbacks
or the guy who protects the quarterbacks blind side. So
a lot of it has to do with who's throwing
the ball. And if you can get more pressure up front,
think that does alleviate some pressure you have on the
back end, and then presumably you would think you'll get
healthier at some point in the back end too. Like
(01:23:36):
I don't know if there's not a health factor with
the defensive line. Is just that outside of Forrest Buckner
and Grover Stewart, your defensive aid and specifically are not
doing enough. And you know, layout tou Latu. I dove
into all the advanced numbers and metrics. He's up there
for all of them. But then you look at like
the regular old stats like sacks and QB hits and
(01:23:58):
stuff like that, and he's not doing enough quite frankly.
So I'm curious to see how they adjust and if
you know, if someone can take a leap, and I
think that's someone has to be a lot too. If
he's not going to be a dominant player this year,
that would be disappointing because of where you, like you said, Kevin,
you invested so much in that position and perhaps nothing
(01:24:19):
was as big of an investment in drafting. I got
too lot to first, you know, in the first round.
I want to say fifteenth overall, your first pick a
couple of years ago. First tem as the player drafted.
Speaker 1 (01:24:28):
Ethan says, I take a shot at the honey Badger. Well,
since we're talking about guys starting to get older.
Speaker 3 (01:24:33):
Right, No, I'm good on that.
Speaker 2 (01:24:35):
Didn't he retire?
Speaker 6 (01:24:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:24:36):
He retired.
Speaker 4 (01:24:36):
And also he was in safety, so you need a quarterback.
The safetyes are actually pretty good this year.
Speaker 1 (01:24:40):
There are a lot of people wanting a like Indie Finisher.
Why not use the Swiss army knife. Tyler Warren is
an emergency backup quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:24:51):
I'm like, I'm trying.
Speaker 4 (01:24:53):
Not to be disrespectful, but you love Tyler Warren.
Speaker 3 (01:24:56):
I like him at tight.
Speaker 2 (01:24:57):
End trying it. Since what are you taking the I
rode here? I mean, come on, call him out if
you need to call him out.
Speaker 3 (01:25:04):
I mean that is as and I come on, that didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:25:07):
Take long for you didn't take it didn't take.
Speaker 4 (01:25:10):
Long, which is why I didn't just dunk on the
guy like he's clearly joking. I mean, I don't think
anybody is very serious about that. I mean, I do
like the South Paul. Look, but no, I don't want
him back there pretending to be toua.
Speaker 1 (01:25:23):
Yeah, Commission says again. Uh Hanick, heineke for me at quarterback.
He's free. Called Dion. Call anybody?
Speaker 3 (01:25:31):
Wait, wait who call?
Speaker 1 (01:25:32):
What he said called Dion. I don't know what that
meant exactly, but.
Speaker 3 (01:25:37):
He's someone Dion Sanders or something. All enough of that
we can go to break.
Speaker 1 (01:25:40):
I think he's starting for cornerback. Help at this point
in time is we can go to break? All right? Uh,
now that Kevin has gotten James to call someone as nine,
we're in good shape now. Coming up next though, we
will talk to Zach Keifer. We'll get back on track
talking about the Colts and uh find out what Zach
discovered when he was at the Colts game this past Sunday.
It's up next to ninety three five and seven to five?
(01:26:01):
Fan man, how good is it to be living in
the Hoosier State right now? You got the number three
team in America and college football. You got the preseason
number one college basketball team, you got the number one
team in the AFC and the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (01:26:19):
You got an NBA.
Speaker 1 (01:26:20):
Team coming off of Game seven appearance in the NBA Finals,
and I know I'm leaving stuff out like the INNY
five hundred and all the other great things going on,
like it's it's great to be a sports fan in
this state at this time.
Speaker 2 (01:26:32):
Kevin, Yeah, fever, hell of a run with a banged
up bunch. Selfishly maybe mentioned the team in South Bend
making it to the National title game, but I know
that's very selfish of me. On that Zach Keeper going
to join us in a few James, I don't think
I'm here. But has Anthony Richardson put on a Colts
(01:26:52):
uniform for the last time?
Speaker 3 (01:26:56):
That's a great question.
Speaker 2 (01:26:59):
I don't think I'm here again. He's on IR so
he's got to miss four games. Trade deadline three weeks
from today. I don't necessarily I'm not inferring that he'll
be traded, but like if all of a sudden you
sign a new quarterback that you like being the backup,
those that dude become the backup for the rest of
(01:27:19):
the year, Does Riley Leonards stay as the QB three
for the rest of the year and then who knows
what happens at the end of the year. Just the
thought that I did have when I saw the IR
news last night.
Speaker 4 (01:27:31):
That is something to consider because of the amount of
time he's gonna miss.
Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
So if you get a backup.
Speaker 4 (01:27:37):
In here and you like his process and what he's doing,
is a month enough time to possibly supplant ar. I
can't rule anything out, but I think it'd be hard
to kind of say, Okay, I got you invested the
fourth pick in a couple of years ago, is suddenly
not your backup anymore after a month of being an
IR possibly longer.
Speaker 3 (01:27:56):
We don't know when.
Speaker 4 (01:27:57):
He'll be back, but yeah, I guess all kind of fluid,
and it is a question. I hadn't really thought about
Matthew Richardson in a Colts uniform. I will say the
last time we heard from his camp on the record,
they said they didn't really trust the Colts process and
they're playing moving forward with him. So I was always
in the camp off they're not going to trade a
mid season because that would just be dumb on both parts.
Speaker 3 (01:28:17):
You need your backup quarterback and AR and.
Speaker 4 (01:28:20):
Theory before his injury that his next opportunity to be
on the field because Daniel Jones, who has the in
sense of injury history, would be knocked out of a
game or something like that. So we'll see where things
stand at the end of the year. And I do
think that's when things could heat up possibly and we
get some more traction on possible trade talker rumors or
things like that.
Speaker 1 (01:28:37):
All right, let's check the gay guest line right now,
the pay Less Liquors Hotline, and Zach Keifer from the
Athletic is standing by to talk to us. And Zach,
good morning. Thanks for being here on a Tuesday. Always
good to hear from you. We were just talking about
this as you came on. Is it possible we've seen
the last of Anthony Richardson with the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 6 (01:28:56):
I think that's a totally fair question, Jeff. I hadn't
really thought about that, and it's really unfortunate that this
is the incident that sort of spurs that question. First off,
I hope he I hope he's okay. This sounds like
a really strange, weird accident that happened in the locker
room before the game. But I do feel like this
(01:29:16):
team is starting to realize that their quarterback is Daniel Jones,
and maybe everything falls apart at the end of the season.
But it certainly seems like Daniel Jones is going to
be the quarterback beyond twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (01:29:30):
So I do want to say, Zach, thanks for joining
the show and thanks for ruining my life like you
always seem to do when you come around. Things got
a little weird there for us in pregame, But I
do know that you were stopping by not only for
the game, but more so to get a little more
insight on Daniel Jones how he's wired. You basically told
him after the game he has no life, and he
kind of grinned at you. But reading through your story
(01:29:52):
this morning, you had a chance to catch up with
Jason gear who gave us a lot of you know,
sort of I think insight that I hadn't heard of publicly.
So can you give us I guess not to give
away your story, but give us a couple of cliff
notes there on what you learned from Jason Garrett about
Daniel Jones and why that's helped him here Indianapolis.
Speaker 6 (01:30:11):
Yeah, so you guys are not going to believe this,
but when you're trying to find something interesting about Daniel Jones,
it's really freaked it hard. I mean, I put this
in the lead of the story. But I asked, like
two or three of the vets on the team, like,
can you tell me something interesting about this dude? And
I got a lot of blank stares. And that's not
to say that Daniel Jones is super super boring, but
(01:30:32):
even he said in his press conference, like, I don't
do a whole lot besides this stuff, and this stuff
would be right now running the best offense in the league,
the highest scoring offense in football. But to pivot to
Jason Garrett, yeah, like I learned a little bit from him.
I don't know if he was the right fit in
New York. And I know that Eli was his predecessor.
(01:30:54):
And Eli was the guy who never gave any good
quotes and was super stoic and was unflappable, right, and
he won the two Super Bowls, one of which he
won right down the street at Lucas Soil. But with
Daniel Jones, you know, I got the story of him
like taking the ferry across the Hudson River and then
running an e bike to ride into New York City
when he would go to dinner with people, and it
(01:31:14):
just seems like the most opposite thing you would think
of the New York Giants quarterback, and I just don't
know if his personality meshed with New York as well
as some others would maybe Jackson Dark who seems to
be really embracing the spotlight there, and they seem to
be have something going there in terms of a spark.
But honestly, like in talking to Daniel Jones and then
(01:31:36):
talking to Jason Garrett and talking to people in New York,
it just feels like Indiana is more his speed. And
there's nothing wrong with that. It's my speed too.
Speaker 2 (01:31:45):
Genzach Kieper from the Athletic who with this see on
the payloss slicker sideline. The latest Daniel Jones might be
the most vanilla QB in the NFL and a perfect
fit for the Colts.
Speaker 3 (01:31:55):
More chocolate.
Speaker 2 (01:31:56):
It's a great read up on the well Halloween right now,
a lot of that standards. What's his favorite Halloween candy?
We could go there. Cookies are brownies?
Speaker 1 (01:32:04):
Right?
Speaker 5 (01:32:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:32:06):
Which one?
Speaker 5 (01:32:07):
Zach?
Speaker 1 (01:32:07):
Very broken?
Speaker 2 (01:32:08):
Signetti at him, Zach Keefer, do you have a favorite
cookies or brownies?
Speaker 6 (01:32:12):
Cookies?
Speaker 1 (01:32:15):
Zach, You're invited Saturday afternoon and watch some football. We'll
call it good.
Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
There's the reason why Zach looks away he does and
runs as fast as he does. You know, he's not
enough brownies out there, Uh, Zach. It almost seems like
when you say perfect fit for the Colts, I immediately
go to Shane p Syke and and just how he's wired.
He is psychotic from a preparation standpoint, I would argue,
and I think Daniel Jones meets him at that level.
So yes, you know, living in more of a quaint
(01:32:41):
city and whatever part of town and all of that,
and the speed of Indie I would agree with. It
also seems like the marriage from a head coach play
caller fits exactly what he was looking for as well.
Speaker 6 (01:32:52):
You know what, I went back to KB, You're you're
dead on and this this really hit me on Sunday
as I was listening to Stike and talk about the
operation they do, and then Daniel Jones talk about it.
When we have Shane Steiken back in twenty twenty three,
what he wanted in a quarterback, because we knew they
were gonna draft one. The first thing he said was obsession.
I want a quarterback who's obsessed. And that hit me
(01:33:16):
more and more as we got through the Anthony Richardson era,
which TDD at this point, but it feels like Jones
is that guy. I mean, he's calling out plays from
the Panthers Week two game the night before they played
the Cardinals on Sunday to say, hey, let's watch this
clip from a month ago because we might see this look.
And it just seems like that's more of Shane Stikeen's style. Why,
(01:33:36):
because that's who Stikeen was. I mean, Stikeen was the
teenager in high school who would skip out on the
parties to sneak into the stadium to throw to his receivers.
I mean, he wants an obsessive guy. Why did he
have so much success in Philly because Jalen hurts it
like that. He's all business, he's all football, and he's
locked in. And it just feels like Staken may have
(01:33:57):
finally found a perfect fit for him in Indianapolis. He
had some success with Gardner Minshew, But it just feels like,
like you mentioned obsessive, psychotic. I mean that's Stikean, right,
He is all ball. Everyone I talked to in the
league has the same description of Saan s Tyken. He's
all ball, there's nothing else and it just feels like
Daniel Jones is the perfect quarterback for that. And I
(01:34:17):
don't want to omit the fact that he's got maybe
the best young tight end in football, he's got a
running back, he's playing like an MVP. The line is
balling out, and the receivers have been really good. Reggie
Wayne deserves a lot of credit. Josh downs with a
tremendous touchdown, Alec Pierce that back sort of turning away
from him, fingertip grabbing the red zone. I mean, like
that unit. It's to some of the parts. It's certainly
(01:34:40):
not Daniel Jones carrying this thing. But I think Shane Stikeen'
is that good that he can get the most out
of a quarterback like Daniel Jones and have the highest
scoring offense in the league.
Speaker 4 (01:34:50):
Zach, when you were there in person, perhaps what impressed
you the most about the way the Colts offenses operated,
especially against an Arizona defense into that game that ranked
fourth in the league in points aloud?
Speaker 6 (01:35:04):
Yeah, So I go back to this. I go back
to the best offenses make it easy on themselves, right,
So I travel around lot, I watch a lot of
these offenses in training camp, and then in the season
and you get a feel for how easy they're making
it on themselves. Are they putting themselves in third and nine? A,
they're putting themselves in third and two? You know, the
Colts are averaging the most first downs per drive of
(01:35:24):
any offense in football. This is the polar opposite of
last year. This is the polar opposite. And I don't
mean to pile on Anthony Richardson because everybody wasn't blame,
but look, they made it so difficult on themselves last year.
They couldn't make the layoffs, they couldn't complete easy passes
over the middle, and they couldn't do the things that
sustain drives. The Colts had the shortest time of possession
(01:35:46):
per drive last year. You guys know why. You watched
all the games, right, three and out, three and out,
three and out, third and eleven, third and twelve, third
and nine, and they just didn't have a quarterback who
was accurate enough to complete those passes. Jones is soeraly
more accurate than Richard said, but he also is getting
them in better situations. I'm pretty sure the touchdown to
Taylor was a check. So it's just those little things
(01:36:08):
that add up that make it easier on your offense.
And to your question, James Arizontal, it was a difficult defense.
They were tough and it looked like the Colts are
having some trouble getting the ball consistently down there, but
they just kept finding a way. They have a lot
of answers and the quarterback has a lot of answers,
and I think you put that together, it's really fun
(01:36:28):
to watch them really click, because this offense has not
clicked like this since I mean, I'm not even gonna
say twenty twenty one, because the quarterbacks faded down the
stretch and nobody wants to talk about that. But it's
a little bit like the Philip Rivers offense in twenty twenty,
which I have a soft spot for because it was
so fricking fun to watch him throw that throw that
offense out there and just throw with anticipation. And so
(01:36:50):
this offense is for real. They have a lot of answers,
they have a lot of balance, and Shae Stiken really
deserves a lot of credit for what he's doing with
this group.
Speaker 2 (01:36:57):
Zach, I want to take it in a different direction
here before we let you go, and again, appreciate your
time here on this Tuesday morning. I said it to
you in the press box on Sunday. You need to
write the Kurt Signetti feature. I know some people have
attempted it, but no one's a future writer like you.
It's your alma mater. Someone's got to write that story
(01:37:18):
because it's one of the best coaching jobs pro college.
You need to do it. Sorry to put work on your.
Speaker 6 (01:37:24):
Plate, man, I don't think I'd have a shred of
objectivity if I did that story, because I'm having as
much fun with AYU football I think as anybody. And
I was arguing with my friends the other day and
I'll throw this to you, guys. Is it the best
hire that they've made since Bob Knight, since Jerry Yeagley.
I mean, it's hard to argue with that. You just
(01:37:45):
don't see this in college football, what he's done in
such a short amount of time. But I think it's
up there with one of the best hires in that
school's athletic history.
Speaker 2 (01:37:54):
Zach and my four years there, which I think overlapped
a little bit with you. They won three Big Ten
football game in four years. They gave up eighty three
points in a football game to Wisconsin, like Bill there,
those are my football memories.
Speaker 6 (01:38:10):
Yeah, it's my football memories. Are people not leaving the
tailgates because there was no point, Sure, that's what it was.
That's what it was, or leaving the game after the
first or second quarter, because that's what it was. And
he's completely changed it. He's cocky, he's arrogant, and I'm
here for every minute of it.
Speaker 1 (01:38:28):
You know he's down of business when he puts those
hands on the hips and he's got that look on
his face like something bad is about that into the
other team. I like that he's got a sideline.
Speaker 6 (01:38:37):
We were watching him during the Illinois game. We went
down and had some pretty good seats, and I mean
the game was a little tight early in the first quarter,
early James early in the game.
Speaker 3 (01:38:48):
But say if he went to the bathroom and tame back,
they were down thirty.
Speaker 6 (01:38:51):
But say he was. He was away from the coaches
most of the game with his hands on his hips,
just glaring at the field. And then you watch the
game and they are just punishing them upfront, I mean,
absolutely destroying the Aligni's offensive line. And Signetti doesn't even
act like he's face, doesn't even act like you've seen
anything happening out there. It was amazing. I mean it was.
(01:39:13):
We're talking about one of the greatest beatdowns I've ever
seen them from.
Speaker 3 (01:39:16):
Okay, okay, all right enough, get him off the airwaves, all.
Speaker 1 (01:39:19):
Right, Zach?
Speaker 3 (01:39:23):
That was in facts.
Speaker 4 (01:39:24):
No, I agree, man, After seeing that is why I
picked them against Oregon. I'm like, you beat a team
like that by fifty who For the following week, Illinois
came back and beat usc They're not some scrub team.
Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
They just did I use on a different level this year.
Speaker 6 (01:39:35):
What a different world we live in. The Colts are
rolling the Indiana Who's your football team is rolling? It
feels like it feels like we're stealing money right now
or something.
Speaker 4 (01:39:45):
Hey, this is good living. So Zach, will let you
get out of here. Man, Thanks for stopping by the game.
I'm sure I'll see you around. But uh yeah, get
started on that signetti piece. We're not asking for objectivity anyway.
Just be objectively fun in the piece, how about that, Zach.
Speaker 1 (01:40:01):
All I know is I have several family members that
occasionally make a batch of cookies for me. You're invited
next time. Man.
Speaker 6 (01:40:08):
You're there, Man, I'm in I mean I stay away
from those brownies though, I'm in.
Speaker 1 (01:40:11):
Thanks guys, all right, sounds good. Zach Keith for the
athletic joining us hero the Payless Liquors hotline. You know
we talked about real quick go ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:40:18):
I was just say we talked about to lead off
of the show. But for those that missed it, you
know a little bit of this chatter of Kurt Signetti
Penn State and you know, just to kind of, I guess,
add a little context to it all. Kurt Signetti grew
up in Pittsburgh. He played at West Virginia, so the
Penn State connections are not like direct direct Pat Kraft. Ironically,
Penn State's ad played football at IU. You know, what
(01:40:39):
do you do that to his alma honor? Uh Now,
Zach said something that kind of was hitting on to
lead off the show. Kurt Signetti's ego is real and
it's healthy for Indiana, Like Indiana needed that, and I
think that ego wants to be the one to take
Indiana football to stratosphere. They've never sniffed where if you
(01:41:02):
go to Penn State just another guy is too offensive, probably,
but it's Penn State football. The brand is bigger than you,
Kurt Signetti is bigger than IU football like that he
can build the brands that like. You know, when you
think about Indiana football now, people are going to start
thinking about the JMU coach Kurt Signetti before they think
(01:41:22):
about you know the history of the Kreem and Crimson
and the nineteen sixty seven Rose Bowl. And you know,
unfortunately that's just the reality. But I mean that, I
know it maybe doesn't sound like an outright compliment per se,
but who cares. Like all that matters is do you
want to be your football coach or not? And I
think his ego will want to continue to take IU
(01:41:43):
football to places they never got there in their dreams.
Speaker 7 (01:41:47):
So I'll tell you what, Well, go ahead, Jeff of sorry,
cause here's the other part about this.
Speaker 1 (01:41:52):
As we sit here today, I'm not convinced that Indiana
isn't just as attractive a football destination as Penn State is.
Speaker 2 (01:42:00):
Yeah, I think there are some you know, if you're
gonna list out the pros and cons, that think are
definitely some boxes where Indiana is much more competitive. You know,
you still are getting whatever one hundred thousand to show
up the Happy Valley Weekly, and you know, kurtz Ignetti
still is asking for his fans to stay there for
the you know, non big, non Illinois game.
Speaker 4 (01:42:18):
Well, go ahead, James, I will say, you know, to
your point about just how different things feel, and this
is how I look at all things when it comes
to sports. Actually growing up, your highlights, your best moments
are no longer grainy and on film that you gotta
you know, dig out of the archives. Your best moments
are happening right now. That's how Yeah, that's how different
it feels. I feel like if you if I got
(01:42:39):
to look in squint and see, man, that's not HD man?
Speaker 3 (01:42:42):
Is that even? Is that that the first time they
had a color television?
Speaker 4 (01:42:45):
I mean, these are the moments that we're talking about
for IU football that I mean, as an Illinois guy,
was similar to when they kind of had a researchers
here in years past, where it's like your last time
you were good was way back when you know, some
somebody telling me, oh, back in the thirties and forties.
And I don't care about that. Kids care about what
happened yesterday and yesterday or at least last weekend. You
had a great showing at Oregon and you're rolling right now.
(01:43:07):
So it's a different day, different dawn, all those different
things you want through out there, because i U is
for real, and I would venture to say they have
more to prove this year.
Speaker 1 (01:43:16):
And they also now literally can go toe to toe
with just about anybody in the country when it comes
to financial considerations, whether it's upgrading facilities, whether it's the
amount of money available to you through donors and alums
and things like that. I use not taking a back
seat to too many folks these days. They're right there,
not at all all right, coming up at a minute,
(01:43:38):
we'll have a little readings review for you from all
over the place. But right now we've got to check
down here on a Tuesday morning, gentlemen, the culture off today.
They'll get back to work tomorrow, but they might be
looking for a backup quarterback today. James Boyd, what are
the possibilities of what do we know right now?
Speaker 4 (01:43:56):
Well, we know that Anthony Richardson's going to be out
for at least the next four games, which is next
five weeks because there's a bye week ind there as well.
He cannot return until week twelve at Kansas City. So
in the meantime, do you go out and get a
veteran quarterback. Assuming you do, what avenue do you take?
Is that free agency? Is that signing a guy for
practice squad for another team, or do you trade for someone?
(01:44:17):
So there's a lot of options out there, and I'm
sure a lot of us like me and Kevin will
be breaking those things down for you at our respective outlets.
Speaker 1 (01:44:23):
Kevin, and then it comes to making a trip to
the grocery store and maybe not just backup quarterback. Is
there a possibility they could be kicking the tires on
secondary people, specifically cornerbacks and maybe even edge rushers.
Speaker 2 (01:44:34):
I think they're gonna say the French onion and the
ranch dip from Daisy there, I thought. I thought that's
where you were going with the trift to the guntry store.
By the way, three weeks from today trade deadline. So
I think you get through quarterback and you know, you
obviously see how you rank out those other positions. Do
you look at corner and say, hey, we'll get healthier
there you linebacker and defensive end. I don't necessarily know
(01:44:55):
if injuries are at play they are contributing to those
question marks. That's they definitely not defensive end you're really
healthy there. Linebacker maybe Jalen Carlies. So yeah, I could
definitely envision a defensive move here, especially because we've never
seen the Colts in this position. Trade deadline a few
weeks away atop the AFC. You know you're in much
(01:45:16):
more of a win now. We should be a buyer.
We are in a position to capitalize on this season
than really you have been at all in the other
eight years of crisp out.
Speaker 1 (01:45:25):
All right, last week they were looking for a kicker,
they found one and bad. So it was terrific right out.
Speaker 6 (01:45:28):
Of the gate.
Speaker 1 (01:45:29):
So who knows what happens this week, Maybe they hit
lightning twice. Meanwhile, in the NFL, there is no good
news coming out of Tennessee for Brian Callahan. He has
been relieved of his duties. James Boyd for the Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 4 (01:45:44):
Yeah, had an awful what year plus almost two years
basically with that team. Did not see much progress there,
which is why they moved on from him, and Mike
McCoy will take over.
Speaker 3 (01:45:57):
As the interim coach. And I believe Kevin you pointed
out he's got some more up with Shane Stychen.
Speaker 2 (01:46:01):
Yeah, HIV and Chane were together. He was the head
coach and with the Chargers when Shane Saking kind early
in his coaching ten years. So yeah, Shane, we'll see
the Chargers this week, I think nine years in a
variety of roles with the Chargers and the Colts. We'll
see Mike McCoy and the Titans coming up here, not
this week but next week and again. Dysfunction has been
the name of the game in Tennessee. You know, it's
crazy to think that there for a couple of years
(01:46:22):
they were like they were the one seed one year
with Ryan Tannahal and Mike Rabel and why they fired
Rabels just beyond me.
Speaker 1 (01:46:31):
Tennessee doing Titans things. I suppose two games on Monday
Night football. Last night, Atlanta Falcons beat the Buffalo Bills
twenty four to fourteen, second loss in a row for
the Bills, and their head coach says it's time to
go back to the drawing board all of a sudden.
I mean, they're sitting there at four and two, not
that bad, but there. Yeah, So Sean McDermott and his
(01:46:52):
group getting back to work there and the Bears got
to walk off field goal the last second there from
Jake Moody to beat the Washington Commanders twenty five twenty four.
I saw highlights this morning. It did not see that
one live. Kevin Bowen, Were you still awake? I bailed
at the end of Bill's falcons? All right. The Pacers meanwhile,
finish up their preseason last night, or not their home
(01:47:12):
schedule of the preseason. They still have one more at
San Antonio on Friday, but last night they lose at
home to the Spurs one twenty four to one oh eight.
Benedict Mather and the story in the first half had
twenty seven first half points, thirty one on the night.
Andrew Nemhart eleven points, eight assists. But the big story,
if you want to look at the downside of it,
James Boyd is the center position was struggling last night.
Speaker 3 (01:47:34):
Isaiah Jackson had three fouls and three seconds last night.
Not ideal.
Speaker 4 (01:47:39):
And yeah, for those who kept saying, you know, Jay
Huff this and they can all kind of replace Miles
Turner easily.
Speaker 3 (01:47:46):
Not so easily.
Speaker 4 (01:47:48):
I know Miles left, that was his choice, but he
is certainly I think, better than what they have right
now at the moment. But we'll see how they are
able to adjust. I don't want to, you know, make
any true declarative statements. I do think they're worse off
without Miles, that's an obvious statement. But can that group
kind of, you know, build some things as we've hosted
a regular season.
Speaker 1 (01:48:05):
All right programming note tonight coming up at seven pm,
we will have track side with Kurt and Kevin. Looking
forward to that as always. And then right after that
eight oh eight tonight, first pitch the National League Championship
Series Game two. The Dodgers won Game one last night
over the Brewers by a score of two to one.
Blake Snell when eight innings of shutout baseball, allowed just
one hit, no walks, ten strikeouts. And they'll do Game
(01:48:26):
two tonight. You'll hear it live right here in ninety
three five and one to seven five of the fan.
The Mariners took a two games to none advantage over
the Blue Jays in the American League. They're off today,
but they won ten three last night. Anything else you
want to throw in KB.
Speaker 2 (01:48:37):
Yeah, Purdue ranked number one in the preseason college basketball
Paul Houston, Yukon, Florida the other teams receiving first place
votes there and Yes, the Final four is right here
at Lucas Oil Stadium. That story probably rights itself if
Perdue is able to play on that first Monday in
April and cut down the nets. And then you just
(01:48:57):
saw this announced a few minutes ago. Butler Basketball welcoming back.
Gordon Hayward, the fourteen year NBA All Star, multi All Star,
if I'm not mistaken, one time All Star, State again,
one time All one. Yeah, executive basketball advisor. So he will.
And I think we've kind of seen this with some
(01:49:18):
of these, you know, star NBA players going back to
their respective colleges here. So I'll work alongside Bad Model
their GM and Grant line Decker their ad there. And
it sounds like you'll do some talent evaluation, recruitment, player development,
team culture, serving the mentorship roles tudent athletes in the
program focused on leadership and professional development. So Gordon Hayward
(01:49:39):
back with Butler in a little bit of a role here.
Speaker 4 (01:49:42):
Two thousand and eight mister basketball in State of Indiana
and led Brownsburg. I believe to the Class four A
state championship. Had that buzzer beater there, which gets played.
I feel like every montage for our state's basketball history.
Speaker 2 (01:49:55):
Shout out, Gilliam Avongo.
Speaker 3 (01:49:57):
That's a good pool right there, that's a good pool.
Speaker 1 (01:50:01):
I love it all right. Coming up next we will
do a little rankings review, all kinds of things to
talk about. Kevin kind of teased one of them. It'll
do it next to ninety three five and one to
seven five the fan. Everybody's happy this morning, Mark Dyton
smiling somewhere in Florida after the Bear's got a walk
off field goal last night. Caleb's happy because he's the
only guy I know happy to get up atfore five
(01:50:21):
o'clock in the morning and come to work.
Speaker 9 (01:50:23):
So that's good, dude. I mean, it's nothing better than
this to just sit behind the board. Here's some awesome
people talk sports like. I'm living the dream right now.
Speaker 1 (01:50:31):
I do it.
Speaker 7 (01:50:31):
I do it at two am if I needed to. Brother, No,
so you don't want to start the show at six
moving forward?
Speaker 3 (01:50:38):
No, no chance, no chance. Seven is fine. I'll see
you at six fifty eight every morning.
Speaker 4 (01:50:42):
Just out as a Caleb who's been stepping in seamlessly
for the ever on vacation.
Speaker 2 (01:50:48):
Mark Dyton, Yeah, you're a Jeff, You're the boss here
a Wally Pip action here with what Caleb's doing.
Speaker 1 (01:50:53):
To the all I can say is he's moved up
in the rankings. He may have eclipsed Mark dykeon right.
Speaker 3 (01:50:58):
Like Tom Brady's taking over for Drew. But so Mark, sorry, brother, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:51:02):
We're talking about Andy Richidon planning again for the calls.
You might not get your job.
Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
Back, calling your name and Disney Mark Dyke then to
get you through the week.
Speaker 1 (01:51:11):
Kevin, you said, what Pip? What is that like?
Speaker 9 (01:51:14):
I'm sorry that that reference went over in my head.
Oh boy, showing my age here, but I'm not that
much younger than than James at least.
Speaker 3 (01:51:23):
No, But honestly, the Wildy Pip thing is like from
way back when.
Speaker 1 (01:51:26):
So for those younger folks, Wally Pip was the guy
that was the starting center fielder before Luke Gerrigg took
his place. Ah then set the all time record for
most consecutive games.
Speaker 7 (01:51:39):
Yes, talking about do you know who Garrett seen forties
here or something like the thirties forties?
Speaker 1 (01:51:43):
I have to go back and look at exactly. Even
I wasn't around back then, James. Yeah, even I wasn't
around back then. How about that? There you go all right,
it's time to do a little rankings recap for you
right now, Kevin, you talked about it during the checkdown.
For the first time in school history. We have all
kinds of first times in school histories this week, for
the first time in school history, the Purdue boiler Makers,
(01:52:05):
Matt Painter, the preseason number one, and the a people
that's never happened before.
Speaker 2 (01:52:11):
Yeah, very deserving. I mean, when you bring back Braden
Smith and Trey Kaufman, Rinn and Fletcher Lawyer. I mean,
today's world of college basketball, you will not find early
any program bringing back three players with the resumes that
they have. And you know, I think Matt Painter has
been super candid as usual this offseason and explaining, hey,
I feel like this is the best chance we've had
(01:52:32):
to win a national title. And he says it, you know,
mainly from a depth standpoint, you know, not to bring
up bad memories, but for new fans, remember whatever Glenn
Robinson's back or Robbi Hummel's knee or you know, Isaac
Hoskain hurt in the tournament. Now he feels, like I
think he said it. He thinks their second five would
make the NCAA Tournament. You know, that's high praise when
you talk about again today's college basketball world, I think
(01:52:55):
it's harder to create depth, frankly, with you know, guys
wanting to leave, and they did lose Cam Heidi and
Miles Colvin to the portal. So yeah, I can't wait
for this Purdue basketball season. I think it's it would
be a hell of a story to complete where Braden
Smith and Fletcher Lawyer were with Fairleigh Dickinson and now,
you know, getting to the National title game, having the
(01:53:17):
Houston experience last year in the Sweet sixteen inside of
Lucas Oil Stadium, and then potentially getting back to Lucas
Oil for the Final four. I know it's a long
ways away when you sit here on October fourteenth, but
very very real.
Speaker 1 (01:53:30):
Well, I am a huge Matt Painter fan. I always
have been. I always want him and his teams to
do well, and it still stings a little bit when
I think of the Carson Edwards team in that game
against Virginia. Man, well, here, here we are. We're gonna
get done this year, right, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:53:48):
I think there's plenty of reason for a ton of optimism.
Speaker 3 (01:53:51):
I remember Carson networds came to Champagne or Banna and
dunked on the Illinois seven footer and I remember thinking,
like that guy can dunk.
Speaker 2 (01:54:00):
Like I know he.
Speaker 3 (01:54:00):
Probably could dunk, but like dunk on people. He was
a special college.
Speaker 2 (01:54:03):
Player volleyball line ability and then also could bang on
some do Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:54:07):
So we will see what Brad Smith had in store
for this season. I know he's probably a preseason first
team All American and rightfully so, he is just remarkable.
You look at his career from high school to college
and what he's done with that Purdue program. The last
thing you're trying to do is win the national championship.
That's the only thing not on your resume. Everything else
is solidify one of the greatest players ever played wear
(01:54:27):
that uniform, and certainly somebody a will go down in
that program's history.
Speaker 1 (01:54:30):
Yeah, before everybody starts writing me and I realized that
it was the year of Virginia one. But it just
I thought that was the year that Purdue was going
to get it done. Yeah, but it didn't work out
that way. But maybe this year at home, when I say,
at home Final four here in Indie, maybe it all
works out all right. Other rankings. We've talked about it
earlier a lot. Yesterday, highest ranking in school history for
Indiana football at number three, and people talking about this
(01:54:54):
program like it's got staying power, and I one hundred
percent agree with that. I love the fact that people
don't look Kurt Signetty and this Indiana team is just
like flashes in the pan. They really will. You hear
people talking about this college football people, long time observers,
people have watched it and talked about it for a
long time. They're like, this looks like the Rythmis looks
and feels like the real deal.
Speaker 4 (01:55:13):
Yeah, I believe Kevin. Did you have Caleb Pool like
the audio on Aidan Fisher? Do you want to Yeah,
perhaps throw that out there to kind of give a
player's perspective on everything we've talked about this more.
Speaker 6 (01:55:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:55:24):
Again, this is the IU linebacker who plays the game.
Just one thousand miles per Hour came over from JMU.
He was asked after the game on Saturday, just kind
of about the IU program, where they were before their
arrival and now where they're at.
Speaker 10 (01:55:36):
Got change the way you think we first got here.
All this team new was losing football, and you know,
We're not used to being in big games. We're used
to losing the games and just kind of being like
the punching bag of the Big Ten.
Speaker 1 (01:55:49):
I think we did a great job. As soon as
we got here.
Speaker 10 (01:55:50):
We changed away, Indiana. Thanks changed away. You know, we
think as individuals, you know, we're prime for games like this.
This is why we play this game, That's why we
come to Indiana. Do you want to play in top
rank matchups? You want to win top rank matchups, and
you want to play for somebody like coach sig who's
so confident in himself that it just flows into his players.
And I mean this program is that a really good
spot right now, just with you know, coach siggat's the
(01:56:13):
helm of it and just how much he believes in
his players and how much.
Speaker 1 (01:56:16):
We believe in him.
Speaker 6 (01:56:16):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:56:17):
Yeah, last year at training camp, we had Kurt Signetti
on and I tried to drop a Will Smith hitch
reference with Kurt Signetti. Let's say it didn't land very well,
but that's kind of what I was getting at, and
Aidan Fisher basically said it there of like you had
to change the way people thought about IU football. And
(01:56:38):
you know, if anybody that watched that movie, Will Smith
is trying to, you know, let's change the way you know, look, act,
you know, move, talk everything when it comes to speaking
to the opposite sex. So in a way, it was needed.
And again it's one thing, I think for your head
coach to say it. I think it's another when you
drop what five to six quality football player into that
(01:57:00):
locker room and say, hey, guys, this is what it's
going to be about, and this is how he acts.
And that was needed. Again, I go back to when
we had Dan Wetzel, college football writer on or the
great writer on a few weeks back. Kurt Signetti was
the right coach for the right situation. It'd be one
thing just to hire a winning coach, but like if
that winning coach had more of a subdued personality, I
don't know if it would have worked to the level
(01:57:21):
that Signetti's brash, aggressive, cocky grabbed the mic. I mean,
Signetti was appalled his first twenty four hours of the
job how people within Indiana University talked about the football program.
That's why he went on the mic at the basketball
game and said all those things he did. Yeah, he
was like, this was not planned, but I was stunned
(01:57:42):
by how people talked about a big tent football program
and acted like, yeah, we were the laughing stock in
college football. So I thought Idan Fisher's comments postgame there
Saturday really stood out.
Speaker 1 (01:57:53):
Well. They are number three for reason, coming off a
big road win against the Oregon They already beat up
on poor James Illinois team and now teams that aren't
considered to be top top teams or what's left on
the schedule. So it's got to take care of business
for several weeks now if you want to get yourself
where you eventually want to go. Also, rankings review, we
turned to your publication The Athletic James the Week seven
(01:58:18):
NFL Power Rankings, and the Indianapolis Colts are number three
in the right here right now as we look at
it power rankings for the Athletic that's crazy.
Speaker 4 (01:58:29):
Yeah, I want to say a start of the year
maybe like thirtieth or something like that, So I know
we got to hit the brake, but yeah, we can
certainly get into that after on the other side of
this break here.
Speaker 1 (01:58:37):
Yeah, I love that the top five teams right now,
they've got Tampa Bay number one, the Rams number two,
the Colts number three, the packers for and the Kansas
City Chiefs number five. Those are right here right now,
so they can fluctuate a little bit from week to week.
Is but we're only six weeks in. But we'll talk
about a little bit more next as we continue. In
ninety three five and one on seven to five Fan
(01:58:59):
getting ready to finish up on a Tuesday morning. That's
twice today, Kevin, had you fool ready to go? I
could have jumped in the hallway conversation.
Speaker 4 (01:59:07):
I felt like like like a kid or something when
you like off when you get the car keys or
something like. Man, I could have really just took this
thing around the block, freaked everyone out.
Speaker 2 (01:59:15):
Coach grabs your helmet, You're in, And then the other
guy said, no, no, no, I'm fine, coach, let me go
back here.
Speaker 6 (01:59:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:59:20):
Yeah, that's pretty much how it goes.
Speaker 1 (01:59:21):
I did Peyton Manning did it end? Ever? One time,
the backup was getting ready to come in. I think
it was brought ass Wiler, and all of a sudden,
Manning goes, no, no, I'm ready to go. And also, oh,
they were blowing somebody out and as Wiler thought he
was coming in and all of a sudden Peyton Manning
was like, no, I need one more serious and you
could literally see aus Weiler his shoulders shrunk and he
was just like.
Speaker 3 (01:59:40):
Come on, man, that was me. I was gonna have
my moment. I was going to have the greatest return
speech ever for you all. But I say, for another opportunity.
Speaker 1 (01:59:51):
James, you were talking about something he wanted to get
to break a minute ago. What was it that you
wanted to continue on talking about.
Speaker 4 (01:59:56):
Well, yeah, I know you talked about you brought the
brankings of the Colts in our power rankings at the
Athletic them being third, and I just think that that
is a conversation we really couldn't get into before the break.
But yeah, now we're on the other side of it.
It's funny to see how we create these narratives, all
these teams thinking and it's like, oh wait a second,
they're great and so I guess it's a little bit
of our cell was creating our own content there. But
(02:00:18):
I do think when you say the Clats are one
of the best teams in the NFL, you have to
give that more credence thing you did before and.
Speaker 3 (02:00:26):
Which each week, which each week.
Speaker 4 (02:00:28):
I'm sorry, You're starting to believe it a bit more,
and I think you have another test going out west again.
You're a little banged up in your secondary. The Chargers
team is also very banged up. But you know, this
is a Chargers team that they still have arguably a
top five quarterback in the league. They have a coach
that wins everywhere. He got right, Yeah, you know what
I was thinking that. You know, we could play the
(02:00:48):
audio sometime this week, but I have to go back
and check to make sure it's clean for our purposes
because over on the their platforms you can be a
little more directless.
Speaker 2 (02:00:58):
Yes, yes, Franklin I mentioned earlier, say though Justin Herbert
not the top five quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:01:04):
But he said, and he also said in this podcast
he would take Baker may Justin Herbert. And at the
time I was like, what, But now is that here?
Gotta give him his credit. Baker Mayfield might be the
front runner for MVP at THEA.
Speaker 1 (02:01:16):
He's balling right now.
Speaker 2 (02:01:17):
So every week, yeah, I can't wait for Sunday. And
just in general, the culture a bat right have an
uptecking competition. That's probably the simplest way to put it.
I mean, you look at the final eleven games mentioned
this earlier in the show. Eight of those teams currently
five hundred or better. Uh, the three games that are
not in that position. One will be Tennessee coming up
(02:01:39):
here next Sunday, and then two is Houston, which I
don't I think it's probably till early to like slot
Houston and Tennessee. I guess this is the easiest way
to put it there. Definitely, so the schedule is definitely
going to get tougher, but there is a real opportunity
for a position group that I think needs a wake
up call, and that would be year pass rush. There's
(02:02:01):
a real opportunity. On Sunday again, the Chargers down were
down their top four offensive tackles. The fact that they
won a football game, they scored twenty nine points in
a football game, down their four offensive tackles, not to
mention they're leading white out and Quinn Johnson. I mean,
just goes to show you who Justin Herbert is and
down their two starting running back, both the running backs
(02:02:22):
and Najie Harris, no Marion Hampton. I mean it's Herbert's
a special player. And really looking forward to four o'clock
on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (02:02:31):
Yeah, kid Vidal, the running back that they called up
from their practice squad. He had a big day, had
a huge day, and he might be a problem for
other teams moving forward the way he played.
Speaker 2 (02:02:41):
Yeah, he had a big day. So they have been
really pouring the red zone. The Chargers defensively, they've had
some issues stop in the run. So you would think
Jonathan Taylor could be, you know, kind of feasting on them.
And obviously Shane Stikeen's got plenty of connections with the Chargers.
Jim Harball, of course, the head coach there. So Yeah,
(02:03:01):
this is a one that I think was always kind
of circled on the calendar. I thought it might actually
get flexed into primetime. They elected to keep it in
the four o'clock window.
Speaker 3 (02:03:09):
But I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (02:03:11):
Yeah, for James's travel schedule, definitely, But given the nature
of the start of this season, this is one of
those games I think, like the Rams game a few
weeks ago, you did circle and you might be catching
the Chargers on you know, they were in Miami last week.
I mean that's a long travel game for them. You know,
does that play into your hands at all?
Speaker 1 (02:03:29):
Well, that'll be coming up this weekend and when it
comes again to putting points up on the board. Right now,
the Indianapolis Colts are the number one team in the
league in scoring one hundred and ninety four points through
six games. James, you're talking about offense.
Speaker 4 (02:03:47):
Yeah, this is the most points they've scored are their
first six games since moving to Indianapolis in nine and
eighty four. So we're talking about decades here of them
being an elite offense so far this year and doing
it against some pretty good defenses.
Speaker 3 (02:04:00):
This isn't against scrubs.
Speaker 4 (02:04:01):
I mean again, last week the Arizona Cardinals entered that
game having only given up nineteen point two points per game,
and you still give them thirty plus. So not after
turning the ball over, not starting off great, and then
figuring out a way good points on the board. So
this is in office. I think you can, you know, again,
sort of depend on and of the way one of
our guys at the Athletic put it. He gave a
(02:04:23):
Shane Stike a lot of credit. Kevin I laughed at this,
and Ted Winn is like our film guy at the Athletic,
and he loves breaking down tape. We did a piece
a couple weeks ago on Shane Stykeen and Daniel Jones,
and he said that Shane Stikeen is the league leader
in drawing up plays that are WAO, which means wide
ass open, So he thinks that he's the best in
(02:04:44):
the league at the WAO category.
Speaker 1 (02:04:47):
So true.
Speaker 2 (02:04:48):
I mean, it is so true. And I mean NFL Open,
which NFL opens different than college open or high school Open.
And Shane stikeing, Yeah, he's in his bag. I believe
the kids would say yes. So yeah, ten for ten
in the reds one the last two weeks. I hope
that resonates with people just how astonishing that mark is.
They are ten of ten and their opponents, if you
want to take it a step further, I believe they're
(02:05:09):
three of ten. So you look at these last two games,
you know you can do the math seven versus three points.
When you're seven trips into the red zone better than
your opponent, what's seven times four, it's a twenty eight
point difference. I mean that's a big, big number when
you talk about two games.
Speaker 1 (02:05:26):
Yeah, and then also when you're talking about points, the
point differential, they are far and away number one in
the league at plus seventy eight. So if you want
to talk about the schedule being the easier side of
it in this first half, that's fine. But they're doing
what good teams are supposed to do to bad teams, James,
and they're winning football games.
Speaker 2 (02:05:42):
For sure.
Speaker 4 (02:05:43):
I do think we can pushes ahead a bin. Talk
about this more tomorrow. But Kevin, are you concerned about
the defense? And I threw that question that Shane and
he was like, Oh, we had a bunch of guys
that were out. Those guys stepped up, but this it
wasn't just a one week thing. I still think this
defense is given up way too many yards on a
week to week basis, and that's something that you can't
missilely ignore because you lost Mooney War now before the game.
Speaker 2 (02:06:04):
Yes, I am concerned because it's not just a corner issue.
It's issues you've been vested a lot into. And again,
competent quarterbacks are about to be showing up on the
schedule more than they have been. We'll see the new
cycle today, whether Jake whether John. At some point today,
I would expect the Colts to sign a quarterback, so
certainly keep an eye out for that and we'll see
if any more on Mooney Ward Chain psych and didn't
(02:06:25):
have any update on him and his concussion status.
Speaker 1 (02:06:27):
All right, to keep it tuned all day long. In
the ninety three five and one O seven to five
to the Fan, also Caleb a great job today. I
don't want to mislead you. Louke Gerrig was a first baseman,
not a center fielder, So just so you have the
complete history lesson there. You can go google some of
that a little bit later on later on today, Jake
Query comes your way from noon to three. JMV take
you home from three to six. Listen for the latest
