Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well.
Speaker 2 (00:00):
The Indianapolis Cults are sifting through their quarterback options. Riley
Leonard has a strained knee ligaman. He's considered week two week.
One of the options is the forty four year old
Philip Rivers.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
His NFL network reported what year is it?
Speaker 2 (00:14):
They are going to put through a workout with Philip
Rivers on Tuesday. He's forty four, he last played in
the NFL in twenty twenty. He is a grandfather. It
is a question of whether or not Rivers would want
to do it. He has to be one hundred percent convicted.
(00:36):
He doesn't know that he is. And the Colts also
are sifting through other options to figure out who else
they could bring in. But that is the point that
they're now at because Daniel Jones is out for the year,
Riley Leonard is week to week. They have Brett Rippen
on the practice squad.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Did not have that one on my being go card.
Good morning, everyone, and welcome into a Tuesday the Fan
Morning Show. Kevin Bowen, James Boyd Beck in studio today.
Mark Dyke did great work on the Old Man River intro.
Right there, Wow, uh KB. I'll start with you, what
was your thought when you first saw that come through
social media yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
Well, dad, gumman, I'm just flipping happy to be talking
to you guys today.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Shoot, uh, wo are related?
Speaker 4 (01:27):
I do think there's some ofesome. Not to say that
Philip Rivers has illegitimate kids. I think he's got enough
legitimate kids.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
No, No, I man like, could they be like like
distant cousins or something twenty three in me situation?
Speaker 6 (01:37):
Yeah, one of those.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
There's a lot there.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah, I it's funny, Eddie Garrison. I did a podcast
yesterday and I half jokingly, half seriously said the podcast
I go. I just called Philip Rivers forty fourth birthday
for the grandpa yesterday. By the way, happy look at
that James Boyd, Mark Dykedon and Philip Rivers all sharing
birthdays in a similar time frame.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
There, It's impressive.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
I ain't getting on the field though, half joking with
half seriously, but yeah, I don't know if Kerry Collins
didn't answer, and Matt Ryan said the CBS gig is
too good. But Philip Rivers in Indianapolis for a workout here,
it is quite a time to be alive, and it.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Sounds like if he were healthy, it would just be
Riley Leonard and they'd roll with that, right.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah, you know, Mark, thank you for that open it
you know, made me laugh. But it has some info
in there obviously Riley Leonards. You know, the knee injury.
And you know, as we've mentioned with Riley Leonard yesterday
and we've talked about it for the last six or
seven months about him, he is a man that needs
the leg element to his game. And so if this
knee injury is going to hinder him in any way,
I deem him very ineffective. So basically you are saying
(02:42):
Brett Rippon or who That's what it's coming down to.
It looks like so if Riley Leonard indeed is banged up,
so we'll see.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Is there anybody worth snatching on a practice squad anywhere?
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (02:58):
I mean, I mean, I guess you could signed somebody
off a practice squad. I don't you know who the
hell knows? What Philip Rivers I mean, Philip Rivers has
made it very clear that he has thought about coming
back in this last four or five year span, and
so we'll see, you know, if the putting the full
pads on in the front yard of son Gunner has
(03:19):
led to anything here.
Speaker 5 (03:21):
I thought he's had a really long weekend because I
was like, maybe I hit my head or something, because
you know, the Colts were in the playoff hunts before
they had healthy quarterbacks, and I was like, now I'm
walking back in they're out of the playoffs and Philip
Rivers is getting a call to hey, you want to
play quarterback against the Seahawks?
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Like what?
Speaker 5 (03:38):
It is amazing? What has happened in the last three weeks.
It is absolutely amazing.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Could you imagine Philip Rivers getting off the sideline or
I think he's been a high school coach for the
last couple of years, right, but that season's over right now.
I don't know if he's still doing that. But can
you imaginehim at forty four, a grandfather coming off the streets,
as they say, and leading the Colts to like a
couple of wins down the stretch and they get a
(04:04):
break or two along the way, and he's starting for
them in a wild card playoff game.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
James wasn't he the last guy to start in a
playoff game?
Speaker 3 (04:12):
So it was in Buffalo, right, I feel.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
Like I'm watching stranger Things, the real life win the
upside down right now, so crazy times. And honestly I
do a double take when I was doing my story
and trying to report on it and confirming stuff and
trying to get clarity and more information. And yeah, I
will say for the people who keep asking like, is
this for real? It's really enough for him to get
on a plane.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Which I think is really real. Like I think once
you get on a plane, like you hear, Hey, the
Colts still have to make sure they're sold on it.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Phillip still us to make sure, Yeah, he sold on it.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
James Shane Stikeen and Philip Rivers are football freaking obsessed.
Can you imagine how many plays they probably went back
and discussed in their dinner last night. You know how
many Charger memories they probably But those juices are going
to be flowing like none other once those two get
back together. At this point, I'd be surprised if Philip
(05:07):
Rivers is not a member of the Colts by the
end of today or the end of Wednesday. I guess
you know their first practice will be Thursday this week
as they play Seattle. Because I just think once you
get together, all the emotions are stirred up. Once you
get in the building, Philip Rivers is going to look
at in that manner. Helly watches the Chargers last night
and says, boy, I could do what those two quarterbacks are?
How many turnovers did Jalen hurtsab last night?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
I could play like that. I was a god awful
one in my game.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
But I was not good for the Colts by the way, Yeah, they.
Speaker 6 (05:35):
They've gotten really no help. Eagles win last night. Not
he also had, you know, Houston beat the Cheese. It's
it's rough right now for the Colts. But I will
say this for context. As far as the Philip Rivers
and Shane styke in relationship, those two were together for
eight years during their Chargers days, and at one point
(05:56):
Shane was actually his interim offensive coordinator. So they talked
a lot of football. And I went back through and
found some audio and different things to include in my
story from yesterday, and one quote to sit out to me,
Kevin was when they actually had talked to Philip Rivers,
they being the Colts podcast team. They talked to Philip
Rivers back in May because of his relationship with Roley Leonard,
(06:16):
because he mentors him down in Alabama. Roley's parents lived
close to Philip Rivers, which sounds like something out of
a Disney movie. Fair Hope, Alabama, Mark Christmas Logan. Yeah,
and here's a river set In this podcast back in May,
about Shane Stiken, he said he and I saw the
game a lot alike. And so even now when I
talk to Shane, it's like we can paint a picture
(06:37):
over a phone conversation about a play, and I know
we're seeing the exact same thing. But Shane has a
unique ability to be able to get that communicated to quarterbacks.
When I was listening to that podcast again, I was like, hmm,
I wondered what those conversations sound like tonight.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Yeah, they are super close. They still talk a ton Jeff,
I think you and I talked about it yesterday. I said,
if this was a little bit earlier in the year,
would probably do the Joe Flacco thing. You know, you'd
go find absolutely he's.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Been playing for the last couple year.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
Obviously, it's post trade deadline, so you have some limitations
on what you can do. And James, I don't know
if you felt this way, but I thought the Brett
rip an answer from Shane Styke and yesterday was really odd.
You know, basically, yeah, would he start right?
Speaker 6 (07:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (07:23):
How those zoom played out yesterday?
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Was?
Speaker 4 (07:26):
First off, you have Daniel Jones conform confirmed torn achilles. Okay,
there's news item one. Then he announces Riley Leonard has
a knee injury. There's news item two. As we sit
here on this Tuesday morning, I sadly and unfortunately have
the thought of is Mooney Ward ever going to play
an NFL game again? As he is in concussion protocol
for the third time in three months. That news item
(07:48):
came out, and so you know, you're trying to sift.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Through all of this.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
I think we are as like people asking questions, and
I'm thinking to myself, Okay, Riley Leonard's hurt, that means
three of your four quarterbacks on the roster are hurt. Yep,
Let's ask about the one healthy dude who hasn't thrown
an NFL pass in three years, and Brett Rippin. So
I simply just asked, Hey, if Riley can't go, would
Brett Rippon start on Sunday? And Mark, I don't know,
(08:12):
maybe I should have send it to you to clip out,
but the direct quote is this, Yeah, We'll see how
it goes I mean right now, that'll be the guy
that's on our roster. So, like I said, we're working
through these situations right now. As soon as I heard that,
I go, they are doing something outside of the building
one thousand percent right. That quote is well, it's not useless.
(08:36):
It clearly matters because you know here they are doing
the river.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
He said, Oh, he will start if that's the only
body we have.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Yeah, which again, if you have three injured quarterbacks and
there's only four in the building, no matter. Even if
you think Brett Rippon is your starter Sunday, you have
to have somebody go out and the back.
Speaker 6 (08:55):
For the record, I'm still thinking, Hey, one guy is
twenty nine, the other guy's forty four. So just keep
that in mind. Know, Philip Rivers is a great player,
great resume, but boy, he's been a minute since he's
been out there.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
There are jokes about the Seattle Seahawks meming grandpa got
ran over by a reindeer, and I'm afraid we might
see that on.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Say, we may get a song submission by a listener
on that. To be honest with you, I could see
that coming. So that's the news as we have it
right now. For the Indianapolis Colts. They're down to possibly
or they are working out Philip Rivers a little bit
later on today. And if there is mutual interest and
he wants to completely and fully commit at this point
in his life, where's he living right now? You know?
Speaker 6 (09:35):
Alabama, Alabama, Fair Hope, Alabama. I do have one interesting
tidbit we can get into about if he were to return,
So I'll just leave that there for you all listening.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
Ten kids, one grand kid, so he's got his own roster,
seven girls, three boy.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
His son. Again.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
I think I've said this before. I want to I
want notre Dame go after her son. He sounds like
a pretty highly ranked rank recruits. Speaking of that, by
the way, Fernando Mendoza's high school coach. In twenty minutes,
Dave Dunn gonna join us here. Coming up in twenty
Rick Carlisle nine o'clock today, paying a flipping Champs shirt
so bad have won four of six, really nice and
the Big three last night. That Ethan Thompson story continues
(10:15):
to be great. So Rick Carlisle at nine.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
That kid hustles every he was getting to every loose
ball he didn't get a rebound on the fourth quarter, James,
he was tipping it out to somebody last night.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
Got enjoy that. Aspect of this Pacer season has been
rough early on, but they found a few gyms along
the way. I had a few moments here, I guess
more recently than before. So I'll take it all right.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Coming up in a minute, we'll get you the checkdown
as you mentioned, Kevin. We'll have Fernando Mendoza's high school
football coach a little bit later on in the hour.
It's all happening right here at ninety three to five
and one oh seven five the fan. Good morning everyone,
if you're just joining us big news this morning, If
maybe you were just watching TV last night, you were
out and about and didn't really pay attention to what
was happening on social media or anywhere else. The Indianapolis
(10:59):
Colts are looking for a quarterback. Kevin Bone who is
one of those quarterbacks they are seriously considering at this
point in time.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
Yeah, Uncle Phil, Philip Rivers, Shane Stike and him have
significant history together. I've still remained very close. Chris Ballard
has always loved Philip Rivers. By all accounts of the
cults tried I should say, looked into him playing in
twenty twenty one as the Carson Wentz to Bacle was
taking place. Other teams forty nine ers in the Saints
(11:26):
they have tried as well here in recent years. So
having said that, this is a forty four year old
that hasn't played in an NFL game in five.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
Years, James Boyd your thoughts initially when you saw that
and as you were tracking the story down.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
Am I being punked? Remember that show, Kevin? Because I
was thinking to myself, this Ashton Kutcher cannot be real.
But it is indeed real, and the Colts are clearly
exploring all their options. But like Kevin said, the guy's
forty four hasn't played in five years. But desperate times
called for perhaps desperate measures. Considering that currently three of
(12:00):
the four quarterbacks on your roster are hurt and the
only healthy one is Brett Rippon, who has not started
a game since twenty twenty three.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
I'm just curious also the quarterbacks that are on the roster.
Just to catch people up again, Riley Leonard, who we
saw play this past Sunday, he's got a problem with
a knee right now, right knee injury okay, so he
may or may not be able to go on Sunday.
Speaker 6 (12:19):
He has a cloudy status.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Brett Rippon has not played an NFL game in three
and a half years.
Speaker 6 (12:26):
I believe his last start was in twenty twenty three
for the Los Angeles Rams, so it's only been two years.
But you know, I guess two years bet than five years, obviously,
for those who keep asking, Anthony Richardson remains on injured reserve,
and then Shane Styke and did tell us yesterday he
will not be elevated this week, so he's out for
Tonnay's game.
Speaker 5 (12:42):
I say, let's get nuts, get Philip Rivers in here,
sign Matt Ryan, get Jim Sergey, and get Curtis Painter
every quarter and we'll see what happens.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
Let's just have some full best men win. Throw a
dart at the board.
Speaker 5 (12:54):
You're getting the first quarter, you get the second quarter,
you get thirty, you get fourth.
Speaker 4 (12:58):
How about didn't they do that that one time with
with Josh Freeman and Ryan Linley.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Yeah, flip a coin.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
I think they won that game.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Old man football, Let's go. Whoever starts at quarterback, we'll
have to take on the Seattle Seahawks on the road
Sunday afternoon, four twenty five kicktime. Our pregame coverage. We'll
start at about one thirty or so. Mark, you didn't
have your mic on for that one.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Yeah, I was one of tantalizing prophecies. And hey, Philip,
I know you're holding your grand kid right now. You
want to get smashed by the Seattle defense right now
in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Over by Reindy Year sliding for a first down Christmas Eve,
and it's going to be ugly something like that, all right.
So that'll be the eight and five Colts who are
currently in eighth place in the AFC, trying to fight
scratch klawn figure out a way to get themselves inside
the playoffs there on the outside looking in right now.
Monday Night football, last night.
Speaker 4 (13:50):
One more Colts news, I am because just the serious
news with Tchaverisward back in concussion protocol. Had some symptoms
developed yesterday morning. So this is now the third time
he has been in concussion protocol in three months. I'm
not sure if I've ever seen a player in the
fifteen years I've covered the Colts being cushion protocol three
(14:11):
times in three months, and then just to refresh everyone's
memory on his status. He missed over a month last
time in concussion protocol and was very upfront and describing
how severe his symptoms were, and it had him pondering
if he would ever play football again. So just awful
(14:32):
to hear that on many many levels yesterday. So it's
the lengthiest the injury report has been all year long
for the Colts. Easily the most notable names and as
you guys accurately put out, maybe the best team they
faced all season, certainly one of them coming up on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
It's just getting rougher and rougher though. Over there at
the West fifty sixth last night and Monday Night football,
it was kind of an ugly game, but somehow Justin
Herbert playing with a left hand that had been surgically
repaired just a week ago, he's running around. He had
over sixty yards rushing last night and leading that team
to a victory.
Speaker 6 (15:06):
James, I will say this like they, because I had
reference to the broadcast he had hand surgery, not foot surgery,
So him running, I get he has to hold the ball,
but boy, I thought that was kind of overhyped. I'm
like they, guy, I.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Got NFL linebackers coming after you.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
Yes, but you're also running with healthy feet. They're like,
oh my god, he ran with the broken hand.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
It's about taking the hits more than anything.
Speaker 6 (15:27):
He shout out to him. The drugs are good.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
His coach called him. Jim Marble called him a superhero.
Speaker 6 (15:32):
After the game, Jim Marble said, like he was as
happy as when he had his seven children. After winning
that game last.
Speaker 5 (15:38):
Night, Jalen Hurts with two guttural scream did you hear that?
Speaker 1 (15:41):
One?
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Hurts had two healthy hands. He turned the ball over
four times passing and then fumbled the ball turned over
twice in one play. He had a rough night.
Speaker 6 (15:53):
James vibes are bad right now. Jeff and Philly, I
can only imagine what their radio sounds like this morning.
Speaker 3 (15:59):
Oh so that brings a conclusion to Week fourteen in
the NFL. Last night over at the field House, though
Indiana Pacers, they got out to a nineteen point lead
over the Sacramento Kings lost it, trailed by seven ninety
seven to ninety and then all of a sudden, Andrew
Nemhart turned into a superhero. He and Benedict Matherin combined
(16:20):
for eleven straight points. He got Ethan Thompson baton rebounds
out to everybody. Those guys were terrific. Pascal Siakan was terrific.
They put together a late run of their own and
they win by eleven points one sixteen, one to five.
I was a wild fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (16:33):
Yeah, awful third quarter. And then the shot making. Yeah,
Nemhard hit those two sandwiched around Mathern hitting the three.
Those were some big time, big time shots again. Rick
Carl e Join is coming up at nine, looking forward
to chatting about Ethan Thompson that story. He was really
active and keeping some extra possessions alive. So that is
now four of six for the Pacers and now they
hit that n season tournament. Little break here so they'll
(16:56):
only play twice like in the next nine days, so
time to rest and time to practice.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
They do not play again until Friday, when they will
take it on the Philadelphia seventy six Ers on the road.
Will the seven pm start there. Heisman Trophy invitees, there
are four of them this year. Fernando Mendoza from Indiana
will be joined by Jeremiah Love of Notre Dame. Kevin
getting a little love there Julian Saying from Io State
and Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt. Those are the four that
(17:23):
will be in attendance. Also, I saw the North and
the Notre Dame athletic director yesterday basically say that the ACC,
through their social media conduct all season long and kind
of lobbying for Miami and against Notre Dame, has permanently
damaged the reputation of the institution. I'm paraphrasing there, Kevin,
But he's been on a little so he's been on
(17:45):
a little media tour of his own the last couple
of days.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
Yeah, ACC and Notre Dame's partnership not an institution.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
Well the part You're right, the partnership. I overstated that,
but I was trying to get a rise out of
it either way. But I don't remember saying athletic directors
make public tours like that.
Speaker 4 (18:01):
Fernando Medez's high school coach going to join us here
in five minutes. And Indiana a very big favorite tonight
against Penn State fifteen and a half points inside of
Assembly Hall. Penn State has played no One this year.
They are eight and one. But clearly those that look
into this do not expect this to be a close
game at all as Indiana tries to regroup after two
(18:23):
straight losses.
Speaker 3 (18:23):
All right, we'll talk more about all these things coming
up in a minute. We'll take a break so we
can get right to the high school football coach off
Fernando Mendoza. We'll do that now and say the Nuns
and Cannis.
Speaker 6 (18:38):
There something they shine be.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Well. He is a sensation in college football, no question
about that. Fernando Mendez is one of four players to
know have been invited to New York City for this
Saturday's Heisman Trophy ceremony. He has done amazing things in
his year at Indiana, leading them to an undefeated season
of birth in the college Football Playoff. And man, we
are dying know more about this young man and it
(19:18):
seems like just a really cool kid too. Dave Dunn,
his high school football coach over at Christopher Columbus High
School in Miami, joined us now on the Payless Liquors
Hotline to talk a little bit more about this young
man and we're hungry coach to find out everything we
can about him. Good morning, and welcome to the program.
We appreciate you being here, but it's got to be
almost surreal to have a kid that you coached in
(19:39):
high school going to New York to maybe get the
Heisman Trophy this weekend.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Huh, it really is, guys, Thanks for having me on.
He's just a tremendous young man. So watching him have
the success he's had at IU, it has been amazing
for everybody down here in Miami and especially at Christopher
Columbus High School.
Speaker 4 (19:56):
And that's Dave done the coach, as he said at
Christopher Columbus High School and Dave up Kevin Bowen here.
I appreciate you responding and joining us on this Tuesday morning.
Let's go back to the first time for Nano Mendoza
got I would say, probably accurately thrust into a game
for you down there. I know you've told the story before,
but for an audience it hasn't heard it.
Speaker 3 (20:15):
It's it's quite the story.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
He was he was injured and didn't practice the whole week,
and they kind of cleared him right before the game.
And I told his dad right before the game. He said, hey, listen,
you don't have to worry. We're not going to put
him in. He said, don't worry about it. Well, our
quarterback got knocked out with about a minute to go
in the game, and his uh came in off the
bench and his first pass he threw was for a touchdown,
(20:39):
which basically, you know, put his in position to win
the game.
Speaker 6 (20:43):
So that is what year was this for Fernando.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
It was a sophomore year, and his dad just shook
his head as we're walking off the field and said,
I thought you said he wasn't going to play. So
he literally he made a statement on his first pass
ever thrown in high school.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
And coaches there little more, wasn't there maybe a misskick
that led to all of a sudden you needed to
do it again and Mendoza got you into kicking range
again for potentially the win.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Yeah, so we ended up there. It's made to score
twenty eight to twenty seven. We missed the extra point,
went through an on side kick, and we had about
fourteen seconds left with no timeouts, and so Fernando threw
a deep in route that got us in a field
goal range, went up and spiked the ball. We missed
the field goal, so it would have been a much
better story if we made either of the two kicks.
(21:29):
But he did his part and then saw him at
the end of the game there.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
I was going to say, you sound like an Ohio
State fan this past weekend if it just made the kick,
But obviously I you and your former quarterback played spoilers
and they have been on a remarkable run, probably one
of the greatest stories in all of college sports history. So,
coach for you, when did you perhaps realize that Fernando
could play at this level? And I say that because
(21:56):
every coach is going to be high on there starting
quarterback and a high character kid, But did you see
some NFL talent in him early on?
Speaker 1 (22:04):
His first start came that next week because we still
have the same injury at quarterback and we played against
Coral Gables High School, was in one of our rivals
down here, and he legitimately went like eighteen of twenty
three with three touchdowns, no interceptions, and just at an
unreal job of guiding our offense and not making a
mistake and being composed, so all the things you see
(22:26):
him do, like on Saturday night versus Ohio State, I go.
Disclaimer by the way, I was born in ann Arbor, Michigan.
So not only was I my favorite team each week,
now is IU And then whoever's playing Ohio State. So
it was really good for me to see that. But
just a composure he had in his first start and
(22:46):
he was like fifteen years old. I'm like, he's and
he was a big kid. He was kind of skinnier
at that point, but I'm like, if he fills out,
he's gonna have a shot.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
That's crazy stuff. So when you're watching that game this
Saturday and the game is kind of on the line,
and they go for it on third and long to
try to put the game away, and he throws that
great pass to to Becker, that what what are you thinking?
When he just steps up in the biggest moment of
the season and he delivers a big strike there with
the game on the line.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
I just had a feeling they were going to have
to throw the ball at that obviously that situation, because
like coach Signetti said, I started looking at the clock,
I'm like, they need two more first outs, you know,
to put it away. So you have to throw it here.
You can't. You just can't play and hope that you're
going to take another twenty five seconds off the clock
and then and then punt it. So I knew he
had to make a throw and I think, you know,
Charlie had had such a great game, you know, the
(23:37):
entire night, so that that was the guy to go
to at that point. I think they like the matchup.
He put the ball in an unbelievable spot and that
pretty much ice the game for him.
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Again, that's Dave Done, the high school coach of Fernando
Mendosi's with to see on the payloss lookers hoghline on
this Tuesday morning. Coach, I know, his high school recruitment,
you know, definitely overlapped a little bit with COVID, so
you know, potentially that impacted some things. But how did
you compare maybe the lack of interest from a high
school recruitment standpoint to what the portal recruitment was like
(24:06):
for him this time last year?
Speaker 1 (24:08):
It was night and day just because we couldn't. His
junior year was COVID and he was unreal. In his
junior year, we had a really good team. We were undefeated,
were champions. At the end of the year. We literally,
I think we played we only trailed one quarter the
whole year. We were a very dominant team. That was
the fourth quarter of the championship game and we we
(24:29):
actually for an end of an interception for a touchdown,
and that's how we gave up the lead. And I
just looked at him and I said, hey, listen, you
got to fix this. And he went down against Deerfield
Beach and led us to a game winning touchdown. So
he played unreal that year and just we couldn't and
he didn't get to go to any camps because of COVID,
and so it was kind of a we're trying to
(24:50):
show everybody in his senior year, which we just weren't
as good around him as senior year, how good of
a player he was. And I was a Division one
recruiting coordinator at one point in my career, so I
had a lot of people in college coaching that I
was begging that I should. He's you never say, can't
miss I go, but he's pretty darn close. And it
was very it was frush. He handled it probably way
(25:11):
better than I did. It was very frustrating for him,
but it was he never showed it. It had to be.
But and then when when it came to you know,
when I watched him play at Cow and I actually
got to go to his best game. I saw him
play against Wake Forest last year. I'm like, if he
enters the portal, I go, He's He's gonna have a
ton of options.
Speaker 6 (25:28):
At this point, again, we have Dave Dunn on the line,
the high school coach of Fernando Mendoza, coach one that
I'm curious about when it comes to Fernando, and I
say this in endearing fashion, the Hoosias are flipping champions
and I'm not, you know, editing that for radio. He
says that, and it's so wholesome. So personality wise, how
(25:52):
have you seen him balance being We've joked about it
here on the station, like the uh like the college
ta versus being a dog and going out there and
competing at the highest level.
Speaker 1 (26:04):
You deep down he's he's a killer, and that's what
you have to know when when he steps on the field.
He's got a different mindset than than than people would
perceive him to have. He's just the nicest kid off
the field. Like I've said this several times in all
the interviews I've been you know, I've done over the
last few weeks. Based on his notoriety, is that he's
(26:25):
the type of young man you want to marry your daughter.
But on field Stone cold killer. And that's what I
love about him is that he can literally he'll be
successful in whatever he does. His demeanor off the field
is driven, but he's such a nice young man and
people like everyone keeps asking me, They're like, is that
how he really is? That's him, go, that's how he is.
(26:45):
Some people think that, you know, he's putting on an
act for the interviews. That's He's always been that way.
That's how he is.
Speaker 4 (26:52):
You haven't any conversation with I don't know any high
school coach. I feel like in this day and age,
it's quickly met with. You know, maybe some of the challenges,
and you know, certainly there are some parents that are
uber supportive and then you can have times where it
can be challenging on that front to deal with all
of it. What would you say about Fernando's parents? Obviously
(27:14):
his brother, of course, we've seen this story his mom
dealing with MS. You know, it's been pretty well well documented.
But what was high school life like with the Mendoza parents.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
They were unbelieved because the dad played offensive line at
Columbus High School. So the dad's a football guy and
he he was I always say this to everybody I go.
When it came to coaching the Mendozes Alberto and Fernando,
between me and his dad, it was bad cop, bad cop.
We were both really hard on him. There was no
good cop else of the mom might have been the
good cop. And the only feedback she ever gave me
(27:47):
was and when we called too many design run plays,
she would tell me, don't have him run the ball
so much. They literally let me coach their boys, which
was awesome.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
Uh, it's fantastic. It's great to learn about him. And
Kevin mentioned Alberta too. How is Alberto as a quarterback
the long term?
Speaker 1 (28:09):
You know what he's they're different and and he's he's
an unbelievable competitor. And he oh he plays with you know,
people say, oh, you know, Fernando plays with a chip
on the shoulder. I go. If that's the case, then
Alberto plays with a two by four in his shoulder.
He's very, very confident in his ability. He's he's an
absolute killer as a competitor, just like just like Fernando.
(28:31):
But I but I even think it's probably he takes
it up a few Nazis. It's I'm excited for his future.
I've enjoyed, you know, and and Alberta will will remind
Fernando all the time. Alberto never lost a playoff game
Maclumbus High School. They're back to that. We were back
to back state champions when Alberta was the quarterback, and
he reminds Fernando that all the time. So it's I'm
(28:51):
excited for for his future at IU, and I think
he's just going to be able to carry on the
mendos A legacy going forward.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
Coach last one, and we greatly appreciate your time here
on this Tuesday morning. Again, Da've done with us here,
Christopher Columbus High School, the head coach of the Mendoza
brothers back in high school. Have you thought what Saturday
night will be like for you? I believe Fernando Mendoza
will be hoisting that Heisman trophy. It will be a
speech for the ages. Have you thought at all about
(29:17):
what your emotions will be come Saturday night?
Speaker 1 (29:20):
Well, I'm going up, so I'm pretty excited for it.
You know. It's not a betting guy, but I would
bet my house on the fact that he's gonna he's
gonna win the award. And I just I look at
a young man who's just put so much work into
his craft and being a great quarterback and watching him
have the success at IU and win this award, and
(29:43):
I share the sentiments of coach signetti Is. I truly
believe it's a team award. He would not be able
to do this without the great teammates he's in coaching
staff he's had at IU. I just think it's just
it's a culmination of of you know, twenty three years
of hard work or twenty I think he's twenty one,
twenty one years of hard work, and it's gonna be,
(30:04):
it's gonna be. It's gonna be real special for me
to watch him hoist the trophy.
Speaker 3 (30:09):
Coach, thank you again for your time this morning. We
appreciate it. Can hear the excitement in your voice. And uh,
it's gotta be a lot of fun to be around
that family and that kid and and have fun in
New York this weekend, my friend.
Speaker 1 (30:20):
Thanks you guys, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
You bet they've done. Head football coach at Christopher Columbus
High School in Miami. He just seems like he's just
got this infectious personality. But you can't do what you
do on the field like he does. If you're not
a killer somewhere in there.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
Boy, I had to laugh here and Da've done described
maybe his mom a little upset at times of too
many RPOs. Can you imagine what mom was thinking when
Kay and Curry got that clean look on her son on.
Speaker 6 (30:45):
That first spect If we're saying that was a clean hit,
I saw him on the Pat McAfee show, and a
lot of people could say, oh, man, you know, I
shouldn't have done that, or you know that was dirt
and no like for all the fans out there saying
it was dirty, the quarterback said it wasn't clean.
Speaker 4 (30:57):
Yeah, and Kate and Curry, by the way, had a
great game, So shout out to the Center Grove product
for that.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
But yeah, it's yeah.
Speaker 6 (31:04):
I saw somebody call him a loser, and I laughed
because I was like, yeah, he's from here, and he
did not lose very often in his h high school
days and not really now either.
Speaker 4 (31:13):
He's one of the best players in the field on
Saturday night, to say the least. So yeah, it's just,
you know, hearing more about the Mendoza story, there is
just it's a bit movie like, honestly, and just everything
that you know he is about, and the unique character
that he possesses and how he is full. You know,
in the portal era, I think there is some nervousness
(31:34):
maybe from longer term college supports fans. You know, do
you really embrace you know, where you're being and you're
just chasing the money, and it's one year here, one
year there, and you're just coming here for you know
whatever further your NFL pursuit. And certainly that was a
big reason why Fernando Mendoza chose Indiana with Kurt Signetti's
history with quarterbacks. But there's a lot more to the
(31:54):
character of the human being. I think we've grown to
know that over the last few months, and you know,
the whole nation has now seen it on display, whether
a Saturday night or you know, certainly they're going to
see it at the Heisman Trophy ceremony coming up here
in a few days.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
And the next time we see him it'll be the
Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, as they will.
Speaker 6 (32:12):
Stay visit for IU.
Speaker 4 (32:13):
Yesterday, Yeah, there are boots on the ground out there
in Pasadena. So yes four o'clock, Alabama, Oklahoma. I saw
some early lines they'd be right around a touchdown favorite
over either.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
I like it so far. I like it. I like it.
I like it. Welcome into the Fan Morning Show with
James Woyd back from Jacksonville. How was the lovely city
of Jacksonville. By the way, it was rainy.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
I'll say that it was leaking in the press box,
and I kid you not. It was legitimately a trash
can in the middle of the press box to catch
the water. So the renovations can't get done fast enough
down there as far as the game goes. Not to
rub it in because I feel like it's crude to
do that considering the injury and the magnitude the injury.
But yeah, I will never pick him the win in Jacksonville.
(32:55):
I'm dead serious on that, And so I see it
with my mom on two eyes.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
James, I was wrong, man.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
I looked at you a couple times last week. I
was like, do you think this curse thing is really real?
And you were adamant that it was and is I
might I might have believed the curse was real when
Jones drew the first pick on the first play of
the game, but then when he went down, I was like,
oh my gosh.
Speaker 6 (33:14):
Yeah, And honestly, you know, I said that last week
sort of tongue in cheek, joking a little bit.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
But if you look at it, I don't know. Man,
Now you have turned me into a believer.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
I don't know if you were trying or not, but
you you've got me thinking things.
Speaker 6 (33:28):
Yeah. But if you look at the eleven losses now
in a row on the road to Jacksonville, which includes
the one overseas in London back in I believe twenty sixteen,
this might be the most devastating one. And keep in
mind in twenty twenty one they were winning in and
they don't win, they don't get in. But the trickle
down effect of the Daniel Jones Achilles injury is far reaching.
(33:51):
It has implications far beyond this season. So everything is
unclear now, and I have to everyone's doing it, me, Joel.
We're all doing these stories of what happens next. And
it's interesting debate because that's exactly what it is. There
is no right or wrong to me, at least when
it comes to the Shane Stikeen evaluation of Chris ballad evaluation,
(34:15):
and really even the quarterback situation as well. In the
Daniel Jones evaluation. I know people are going to tell
me like, oh, you should do this, and this is
how it goes, and fire everybody to bring everybody back.
I can make legitimate arguments for all of it, and
it just kind of thinks that for however, many years now,
you don't get that full evaluation, especially a quarterback because injury.
Speaker 3 (34:35):
You know, we were looking yesterday and the free agent
class at quarterback next year is not all that great.
Are we just turning it back over to Anthony Richardson
at this point in time? I mean, what else are
they going to be able to do next year? What
about Philip Rivers next year too? Have you seen the
Colts quarterback situation over the last six years, seven years?
I will say this answer in Things I think was
(34:57):
a very accurate depiction by James Boyd a little bit
earlier in the show. James, you tease something Rivers related.
Speaker 6 (35:03):
Yes, I was gonna actually get to that, So I
appreciate you reminding me. I kind of forg got there
for a second. But yes, so here is the situation.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
I was kidding, by the way, on Rivers in TWI.
Speaker 6 (35:14):
I'm actually not kidding all Rivers in this twenty twenty
six scenario. So he is one of the modern era
players who is eligible for the Pro Football Hall of
Fame class of twenty twenty six. However, if he joins
an active roster, and active roster is key. If he
joins a practice squad, nothing happens. If you join the
(35:36):
active roster of any team, you have to restart your
five year window because you have to wait five years
until after you're done playing to be eligible for the
Pro Football Hall of Fame. Now, I'm not saying he
gets in, doesn't get in, or whatever, but do you
think you all that that factors into his decision at all?
The fact that he would if he just joins the
(35:57):
roster plays one day, not even plays just but ideally,
if he joined the ross, you would play. But would
he sacrifice another five years of waiting for the Hall
of Fame for one game, possibly of playing football?
Speaker 4 (36:09):
A game I wouldn't want to wait five more years.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
That's two more grand kids, man, Hell yeah.
Speaker 4 (36:14):
I'm gonna be three more real kids with Philip Rivers's
ability to produce children. So yeah, I I know, James.
When I saw that last night, I was like, yeah,
I wouldn't want to be waiting any longer than it is.
Did you guys look at this as embarrassing? I got
that a lot in the last twelve hours. This is
embarrassing the fact that the Colts are entertaining forty four
(36:37):
year old Philip Rivers.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
Is the e ward. I don't know.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
I saw some people say it was kind of like
Jeff's Saturday press conference esque, where you're like, this can't
be real life? Is this really happening right now? And
the fact that you've gone from the top seed in
the AFC to now calling Philip Rivers to fly in
for a tryout.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
A few weeks later.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
I could see where people on that see similarities between
Jeff Saturday and this.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Yes, but here's the thing though, if you're the Cults,
given the options that are out there and available, what
do you do when Daniel Jones is done for the
year and probably most, if not all, next year, your
backup quarterback who's a rookie is hurt? Brett Rippin is
your next best option currently on staff? Like, other than
(37:27):
maybe trying to poach somebody I don't even know what
the list is off somebody's practice squad, Like, what do
you do where are you gonna go?
Speaker 5 (37:34):
What probably going to be someone that is a little
more less old and less retired than Philip Rivers. Though,
like you really have, you've exhausted all your options. This
is the best you can do is we have to
go to the wayback machine and call Philip Rivers at
forty four years old, who's been out of the league
for almost five years now. There's nobody else. There's not
a single soul. There's not someone from the XFL rolling
(37:56):
around that can pop in for a game. Jeff Brohm, Yeah,
Tommy Maddocks, what Sam Ellinger doing? Shot out to the
Jeff Broncos.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
On SAT last night. They did make the uh the
Troy Aikman joke when he was sitting on there.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
James, you compare it to Jeff Saturday at all?
Speaker 6 (38:12):
You going eward man, I don't know how I go
that far, because to Philip Rivers and his credit, his
resume is much more Yes, he's a Hall of Famer, Yeah,
lengthy than whatever Jeff Saturday had to offer way back
when as what was he like the high school coach
a couple of years before he got that gig. So
(38:35):
I think it's very desperate. It kind of feels like
to me, when the Pacers were terrible back in twenty
twenty one, twenty two and they signed Lan Stevenson, and
it was just like, is.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
This a circus act?
Speaker 6 (38:50):
It was just like, at least it's entertaining. It's kind
of what I think of it. Ass So from that standpoint,
I guess it's not boring. But realistically, yeah, it does
seem kind of ridiculous that you're asking a guy who
hasn't played in five years to come out and work
out and you know, sling the ball for you. But
also I think it's most embarrassing. And I'll say this
is it hopefully a disparaging comment, But Brett Rippon, I'm like, man,
(39:11):
I'm twenty nine. I'll be sitting there like there is
no way a hell a got forty four it is
better than me a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (39:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (39:17):
So basically, to summarize it all up, as James just said,
right there, your options right now at quarterback, assuming Ryley
Leonard is not available to play, let's start there. Knee
injury for Riley Leonard flared up after the game on Sunday.
If he is not available to go this week in Seattle,
then right now, the only healthy quarterback on your roster
is Brett Rippon. He is currently on the practice squad.
(39:37):
He's been at the team for two months. He lasts
through a pass in the NFL in twenty twenty three.
I think he has four career starts, two and two.
So basically it is either Brett Rippin or else right
and right now, else indicates else.
Speaker 6 (39:53):
Right now technically is Tyler Warren. That's their other backup
quarterback currently. So they do have to sign somebody. So
every one out there like, oh why go to Philip River.
They have to get somebody on the roster this week
and they will certainly sign a quarterback, and then I'm
waiting for them as well. Kevin to put Daniel Jones
officially on injured reserve, which opened up another roster spot
for you, So there's some roster maneuvering that has to
(40:15):
go on anyway. But yeah, the idea that Philip Rivers
is being brought in is, like I said, I had
to make sure I checked my text and I wasn't
getting punked, and you know, I don't want to confirm
anything and say per sources and I'm dead wrong. So
just interesting, Waite for sure.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
Jeff, you about a practice squad quarterbacks and Austin. Thank
you for pointing us in this direction. Jeff Driscoll, Kyle Trask,
Mike White, Sean Clifford, Bailey, ZAPPI Yes, Sam Ellinger in Denver,
Clayton Tune, Carter Bradley, the son of Gus Bradley. Wouldn't
that be something? Kyle mccor, Trevor Simeon Sam hart Well.
Speaker 6 (40:49):
To be clear, Sam is still actually on the active
roster for Denver. I was the active Yeah, I couldn't
go get him.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
This list has him on the Broncos practice quad.
Speaker 6 (40:57):
I'm looking at the Broncos like active roster right now
on their website.
Speaker 5 (41:00):
Oh those are the names Keith mentioned. Just called, couldn't
hang on. Said, wait, he's at least looking for next year.
He's in Kyler Murray and the interest.
Speaker 6 (41:11):
We got to go to break. I had to think
about that one. Lord. They had to put a closet
about a track that he would.
Speaker 4 (41:16):
Get about it.
Speaker 6 (41:18):
I don't know how him and Shane Styking would jive
for that matter.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
Say you gotta work out the questions I don't know
about all.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
Right, coming up on them. We'll continue to talk about options.
Are they any options? What are those options? How might
it come to fruition at quarterback for the Colts. We'll
do it next ninety three five one oh seven five
The Fan, Good morning, Welcome to the Fan Morning Show.
Kevin Bowen, James Boyd back from Jacksonville, where had a
lovely time up there in the press box. And of
course Mark Dyton is always doing great work. PACER's coming
(41:47):
off a win last night over Sacramento one sixteen, one
oh five. We'll talk more about that with Rick carlysle
in about an hour and also get you some details
in a minute or two here. But if you're just
getting in your car and you're warming it up and
you're on your way to work. Question And for the
Indianapolis Colts with Riley Leonard now banged up and questionable
at best for Sunday, and know Daniel Jones for a
while now Brett Rippon who hasn't played in a couple
(42:09):
of years, Colts are looking for a quarterback and it's
it's true. Apparently they're bringing in Philip Rivers for a
workout today to see if there's quote mutual interest unquote
for him joining the Colts at this point in time.
I can't imagine Kevin he'd come back for anything other
than just being the starting quarterback for a while, right.
Speaker 4 (42:26):
Yeah, that would be my assumption with it all, What
do you think? What do you guys think Shane's dyking
thought processes in this? Like what Shane believes? What what
could be possible?
Speaker 3 (42:39):
I think he's again, who's out there that can effectively
run my offense, get us into the right place, put
us in good positions, and make the right reads. I
think that's why they're looking at Philip Rivers as even
a possibility right now. James, right, I would.
Speaker 6 (42:56):
Think so as well. He knows the offense. They talk
ball all the time, so from a playbook standpoint and
getting up to speed, it shouldn't take that long. I mean,
we all heard the stories of out obsessive Philip Rivers
is with his craft and probably still to this day.
I mean again for those who are just doing tuning in,
he actually mentors Roley Leonard throughout the offseason. Roley's parents
(43:20):
down there and fair Hope, Alabama, live about five minutes
away from Philip Rivers. That according to the potential future
Hall of Fame quarterback. So he is around the game
a lot, still very invested in it, but from a
physical standpoint, I'm just very curious to know what he
can do because it's not like this guy's been training
(43:40):
for this. I would imagine over the last five years
he hasn't been, you know, knocking on doors saying, hey,
get me back in the league. I think he would
have had opportunity by now, So I'm very curious to
know if we get a chance to speak with him
at some point they actually do go through and sign them,
with his thought process, with the you know eight and
five record, the opportunity to perhaps get back in the
(44:02):
playoffs and playing for something.
Speaker 4 (44:04):
I think we played the audio during training camp. I remember,
correctly Mark where Philip Rivers went on Dan Patrick's show
and shared the story of him almost coming back and
joining the Colts in twenty twenty one as Carson Wentz
was having his issues late in the season. I remember
when the forty nine ers had their quarterback injuries a
(44:24):
couple of years ago in their playoff run. Kyle Shanahan
has said that Rivers was their contingency plan potentially in
that run that lost the NFC title game. I think
the Saints also had some late season interest. So I
say this in all seriousness and that I am just
simply relaying Philip Rivers' words to you. But what he
(44:46):
told Dan Patrick in the interview was late in seasons.
In recent years he has put on full pads and
worked out in Alabama. Now again, I know some people
are probably laughing at the thought of, you know, literally
a grandfather going out there at the age of forty
three turned forty four yesterday, forty three years old and
(45:07):
putting full pads on at the local high school field.
Sounds like a scene from a Friday Night Lights movie
with Tim Riggins. But yeah, that's indeed what's happened here.
So I guess to answer my own question, it would
reference simply be a chess you know, Are you thinking
that you're going to somehow chess match your way into
converting a couple third and fours down the field. I mean,
(45:29):
that's because me imagining Philip Rivers trying to run away
from the Seahawks defense is one of the more frightening
thoughts I've had. I mean, you thought it looked bad
with Matt Ryan was in the fetal position. Do you
imagine if that Seahawks pass rush gets humming and they
are one of the best defenses in the league bar none.
(45:50):
And also, James, you can be looking at a rookie
right tackle on Sunday too, with Braden Smith's situation in
concussion protocol and dealing with the neck injury. So again
to answer it, I guess Shane's thought is, we have
no other better options. I believe in the chess match
more than anything Monday through Saturday. And this guy still
(46:12):
has a brain and knows my offense. And again, I
know there are a lot of people that are laughing
at it. I'm trying to just simply put myself in
chainsie can shoes and say, what in the world are
the cults thinking here?
Speaker 3 (46:24):
Scott Johnston did a quick bit of research for us
during the break and Scotty points out it's not an
all inclusive list, but some of the current practice squad quarterbacks,
Mark Rippon of course here in Indianapolis, Kyle McCord, Brett Rippin, Sorry,
Mark was back with the Cult or the Redskins. Sorry
about that. Kyle McCord Eagles, Tim Boyle Jets, Jarrett Stidham
(46:46):
with the Broncos, Adrian Martinez with the forty nine ers,
Malik Cunningham with the Patriots not at all star list.
Does just Jarrett Stidham interest you at all? A guy
that it started and played in the NFL for at
least some experience.
Speaker 4 (47:01):
So again, it's not a guarantee that just because these
guys are on the practice squad they would a join
you on your team. And obviously they wouldn't know your system.
Now you know that's the big thing too. I think
we've not really discussed that part of it. Well for
anybody who thinks, oh, they could just go sign this
guy with the practice squad somewhere else, Yes, but then
(47:22):
you're asking him to learn your entire offense, right chess match,
That's what I mean. Yeah, I mean that Rivers acumen wise, No,
I agree with.
Speaker 6 (47:30):
You from the River standpoint. I mean for anybody else
thinking well, why not anybody else other than him? And
it's like, well, yeah, there's pros and cons to both
of it, because even if you are younger and healthier
and I probably still probably lean more towards that, and
perhaps some of the physical traits, you don't know the offense.
And again, this isn't You're not running you know, the
old high school run left and just be more athletic
(47:54):
than the other guy. No, this is, like you said,
one of the best defenses in the NFL, and you're
trying to just get a basic understanding of the offer
to go out there and perform. So that is tough.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
I mean, part of me thinks.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
We're just splitting hairs between Are we debating a fourteen
for twenty nine stat line or a twelve or twenty
seven stat line.
Speaker 6 (48:11):
Well, I'm actually debating whether or not you know. I
mean you know, so, So here's here's here's what I'm debating.
And I think Phil Rivers should have this conversation himself.
You are contemplating coming out of retirement, you should also
be contemplating being sent back into retirement physically. Because I'm serious.
If I am a Seattle Seahawks defender, I am saying,
(48:33):
please bring this guy out of retirement so I could
remind him why he left. I'm dead serious on that.
I would love the opportunity to say I sack a
Hall of Famer. I wouldn't care hold he is and
still counts. So keep that in mind. Over, I love you.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
There's no mercy on the field in the NFL. But whatsoever,
that's how that goes. So that's that's where the Colts
are out and they talk about a forty four year
old coming in if there's mutual interest, and of course
I would imagine Phillips. According to Adam Schefter, it was
about is he ready to go all in on this
for the rest of the year, and the Colts obviously
(49:11):
want to look and see what's left with that arm?
How does he move a little bit at this point
in time. It's gonna be wild out there today. It's
gonna be wild. This is not like your Tuesday kicker
workout here.
Speaker 6 (49:23):
Nah, certainly not. I'm curious though, when that list drops
later in the day where they show us who the
workouts are the NFL, I supposed to the transactions list,
if there is anybody else they brought.
Speaker 4 (49:35):
Well, the Colts have to sign a quarterback, like, let's
get that out of the way. If Riley Leonard is
in doubt for Sunday, the only healthy quarterback of the
four again torny Kee Daniel Jones Anthony richardson eye injury
is not returning it anytime soon. Riley Leonard, if Adam
Schefter is correct on it week to week was the
designation that Adam Schefter gave with a knee ligament injury
(49:58):
for Leonard Brett Rippon. Is it so you got to
do something?
Speaker 1 (50:02):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (50:02):
Probably today, I would assume maybe tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
Again.
Speaker 4 (50:05):
Late in the season, teams transition, and this is probably
worth pointing out too. You now only really practice, and
a lot of teams do this. You now only practice
two days a week. You know, earlier in the season
you practiced three days a week. Does that change you
know anything of your thought process at all? To walk
through on Wednesday, you know what? And then a practice
on Thursday and Friday.
Speaker 6 (50:27):
So bring me Oscar Fry Brownsburg starting quarterback, back to
back state chefs. He's won a few games in the
NFL stadiums.
Speaker 4 (50:35):
How about just Miles McLoughlin offense the whole game.
Speaker 6 (50:38):
I thought about him too, Bring a both in for
a workout, give a tour of the place. Not letting
met uncle Phil And yeah, Oscar, Miles mclofflin, keep your
phone ready, your boy might be calling.
Speaker 3 (50:47):
Yeah, are we thinking anything?
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Daniel Jones plays football next year.
Speaker 6 (50:52):
So this is one of the things where I don't
understand why people approach this injury like this, and I'm
saying this tongue in cheek when there are reporters who
are like, and I think it was Ian Rappaport, all,
he'll be back.
Speaker 4 (51:06):
You know.
Speaker 6 (51:06):
The timeline is nine to twelve months for an achilles,
so he should be ready to go by you know,
the start of next season. What like, when have we
ever seen any athlete even if they could come back
in nine months, Like, when's the last time we saw
an athlete come back in nine months from achilles that
was a quarterback of an NFL team, Like, the dude
probably should rush back to get back out there if
(51:28):
this is what could be a career altering injury if
you don't handle it the right way. So I think
at the earliest we're looking at a twelve month recovery,
which will put him again in December of next year,
which is the end of next season, which is the
majority of next season being missed. So I just don't
understand anybody who just automatic thinks, oh, you know, I
(51:48):
get it. The optimism fans do it. I've done it
where it's like, oh, this guy's gonna be out eight
to twelve weeks. Well, all mast he's gonna be back
in eight weeks. What and that was it Rogers?
Speaker 4 (51:57):
Not that he looked good when he came back, but
what was Rogers?
Speaker 6 (52:00):
I'm trying to think, because he tore his like the
first game of the what was it, twenty twenty three season,
and so I guess that's a little bit different Kevin
because he had a full year to get ready for
the start of the next season. But I don't know,
like he had a training camp, probably with Daniel. I
just it's bleak, to say the least.
Speaker 3 (52:21):
A lot of people on the text line have some
questions too, a lot of things about why not get
a why not go trade for Russell Wilson quarterback three?
He could ask for his release.
Speaker 6 (52:32):
I mean, he can't trade for him.
Speaker 4 (52:35):
You know, yesterday, Jeff, when we had this conversation, I
thought the best I say this in quote, the best
case scenario for the Colts was to have a Flacco
or Russell Wilson behind the scenes handshake agreement will cut
you you go start there because again we're post trade deadline,
so you can't trade for these guys. That's my thought process.
(52:57):
And you know, we talked about the Brett Rippon quote
from earlier when Change Takin spoke with us yesterday, and
you know, he asked him about, Hey, is Brett Riplan
going to start a fryle Leondar can't go. He was
very vague in that answer. I thought, Oh, the cults
are doing something different. Obviously Philip Rivers is very different.
And just to be clear, and James, I don't know
if you saw something else. I keep on getting asked
(53:18):
about Ellinger. Ellener is on the Broncos practice squad.
Speaker 6 (53:21):
Right I believe he's on their active roster. Okay, I
thought he was on their practice I'm looking at because
never Bronco's active roster right now on their website, So
unless it hasn't been updated, he is on their active roster.
You can't go get him.
Speaker 4 (53:32):
So if he's on their active roster, yes you can.
Even if he's on their practice squad. It's a two
way street. But I think Ellener is the one people
bring up because he obviously was here with Stichen.
Speaker 3 (53:41):
Yeah, and you know.
Speaker 4 (53:43):
At least is you know, participating somewhat in an NFL
practice versus Philip Rivers, is you know, burping his grandson.
Speaker 3 (53:50):
A lot of people on the text line also more
than one Brett and one of them saying, what about
Josh Bean Jason Bean? Jason Beany wrote Josh, but yeah,
Jason be.
Speaker 4 (54:00):
I mean again, Jason. Unless I've missed it, James as
Jason Bean on an NFL roster.
Speaker 6 (54:06):
I'm not sure I have not thought about him.
Speaker 4 (54:09):
Look, I mean, all these options, I mean, I mean
we're all saying, I mean doing all these options just stink?
Aren't we just like literally going roundabout ways? I said
a few minutes ago. Are we splitting hairs between a
stat line that's fourteen for thirty one for one hundred
and seventy yards and two interceptions versus fifteen for twenty
eight and one hundred and sixteen yards and one interception.
Speaker 3 (54:29):
Ellinger is on the Broncos practice squad.
Speaker 6 (54:30):
By the way, where is this information? I'm dead serious?
Speaker 5 (54:36):
When the Broncos beat writers because they said they sign
a X Raiders running back and then listened to practice
squad and Ellinger is there? Interesting Rare sit them the
backup of the Broncos on the active roster.
Speaker 3 (54:49):
Red Slurpy just checked in, just tuned in. Well, has
it been mentioned that Phillip's oldest kid is older than
eight Colts players.
Speaker 6 (54:58):
I know nothing about that man's family. That it's a
big kids, seven girls, three boys.
Speaker 3 (55:05):
More information on red slurpye.
Speaker 6 (55:08):
Yeah you reading these text line names, it's crazy again.
Speaker 4 (55:11):
In the non quarterback news item from yesterday, line the
fact that Mooney Ward is in concussion protocol again was
just It was one of the more jarring internal reactions James.
I've had to hearing an injury update in quite a while,
Like obviously the scene of Daniel Jones slamming his helmet
on the turf, all of that, but three times in
(55:35):
concussion protocol in three months now for Travarious Ward. I
cannot recall the last time, if ever, I've seen a
Colts player in concussion protocol that many times in such
a short time frame. Shane Sekin said yesterday developed some
symptoms after the game. That's where things are at. And
(55:58):
I mean, how do you not just think about his
literal future of This is a guy three weeks ago
telling us he debated playing football again after the last concussion,
and now here he is three games later, back in
concussion protocol.
Speaker 6 (56:14):
Yeah. I really feel for him, and he's been through
so much the last two years and we've talked about it.
His daughter unfortunately passed away last October, so he's been
very candid about that and very publicly candid about that
and the grief that he's gone through and how it's
way on his mental health. And it might have been
(56:38):
last week Kevin when we were playing the audio of
him saying, Yeah, I gotta get my mind and my
heart right to go out there physically play. I can't
play with my mind as cloudy. Yes, So he said
that last Monday exactly, and you factor that in to
now another concussion. I do wonder if a guy who
and keep in mind, he has a very accomplished career.
(56:59):
Oh there is nothing left from a football standpoint that
he really.
Speaker 4 (57:03):
All not to get into finances but.
Speaker 6 (57:07):
Made the money. So if there, you know, there's other
guys who might suffer injuries. And it's like, man, I'm
a fringe guy.
Speaker 4 (57:14):
He's not an undrafted free agent playing his first year
in the NFA.
Speaker 6 (57:16):
No, He's an undrafted free agent that pretty much beat
all odds to have a remarkable career. He might be
one of the best undrafted free agents of the last
decade in the NFL. So my heart goes out to
the guy. Very good dude from all accounts, and just
going through a tough time. And the last thing I'll
say on that, Kevin, I remember being in the locker
(57:38):
room in Kansas City and shout out to Dominic Miranda WHR.
He asked, Chivarius, hey, when you got hit by that
guy the blindside block when we got knocked and we
were all thinking, boys, that's your third customer right there,
and he told us yeah. I almost started crying because
I was scared to get up, he said, because I
(57:59):
thought if I got up dizzy And he was like,
and he told us at that moment, he was like,
if that happened, I'll probably be out for the season.
And that message is ringing in my head right now
of I'm gonna be out for the season, because I mean,
I would not expect him to be back. Seriously, I
wouldn't bank on it. So tough situation and in the
grand scheme of things. A while you got what one
(58:21):
game of Javaria's Ward in Sauce Garden right now, it's
tough break.
Speaker 3 (58:25):
That's the immediate for the Indianapolis Coults. I also want
to talk about, you know, he started thinking about what's
the future for this team with no first round picks
for the next two years, do you have to just
go spend a lot of money. There's no real big
time free agent out there at quarterback. It's gonna be
really interesting to see what they do. Is Anthony Richardson
completely out? I mean, he's eight and seven as a starter,
(58:46):
It's not like he's been a disaster. What do you do.
Speaker 1 (58:50):
Well?
Speaker 4 (58:51):
I said to you yesterday, Jeff in my you know,
twelve hour, eighteen hour immediate reaction to watching Daniel Jones
terrors Achilles, My brief, brief, gut reaction to what twenty
twenty six would look like was probably Anthony Richardson, as
wild as that sounds. Now again, you've got not that
(59:11):
Richardson has earned the right for this, but you know,
if you're on the Richardson camp, we've obviously seen people
like to leave certain situations. Is this situation where you
definitely want to be?
Speaker 3 (59:23):
You know?
Speaker 4 (59:23):
They I think his agent has expressed publicly some disagreements
about how the Cults have handled things, So that's a
hurdle you still need to clear. Not to mention obviously
his eye situation, and then again, who who's making these decisions.
Speaker 3 (59:40):
I think that's the bigger question right there.
Speaker 4 (59:42):
So we'll find out here over the final four weeks.
Speaker 3 (59:46):
Man, Okay, in less than a month, we have gone
from everybody talking about this team being the surprise team
of the year, and look what Daniel Jones is doing now,
and they're running the ball, Jonathan Taylor's up and over everybody,
and they're leading the league and scoring and people are
starting to think, hey, maybe forget playoffs, maybe maybe there's
a deep run coming up here. It's just all at once,
(01:00:10):
just over the course of two weeks gone away. Yeah,
and the window is wide open. Then, just slammed on
our fingers.
Speaker 4 (01:00:18):
And for those that are still wanting to follow the
close playoff picture, like last night's result was a big blow.
I mean, if you look at the Chargers, they have
one of the harder schedules the rest of the season,
and you have the head to head over them. So
if you know, for those in the camp of how
do the Colts make the playoffs, what's the best route possible?
(01:00:38):
I've kind of looked at the standings and thought, you
and the Chargers tied, because if you're tied, you've got
the head to head and you're in And now the
Chargers won last night, so they're at nine and four.
You're at eight and five, so now you have to
make up a game on them the rest of the way,
and your schedule obviously is difficult as well. And you're
looking at Gosh, when I say this out loud, I'm
(01:01:01):
picturing like, all of a sudden, one of my kids
is going to crawl into bed and I wake up
from this dream. But I'm literally about to say, you
could be looking at Philip Rivers starting the final four games.
Is that a dreamer or a nightmare?
Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
It's a little reminiscent remember when he.
Speaker 6 (01:01:15):
Was If he makes it through four games at the.
Speaker 3 (01:01:17):
Very and it's completely different. I get it. But at
the very end of his baseball career, remember Roger Clemens
would come on only in the second half of the
season for the Houston Astros. He's like, my body can
do this for this amount of time. Maybe Philip Rivers
is like, I can do this for a month or two.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
At James's point eleven men trying to kill you on
every snap A little different than a broken bat from
Mike Piazza being.
Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
Hell, that's I say it's not this the only thing
I can even come up with that where a guy
is saying I can do this for a month, maybe two.
But to your point too, James, they're coming to get you.
Speaker 6 (01:01:50):
Yeah, So real quick, our playoff projection model at the
athletic which factor is into Daniel Jones injury? Through Week
fourteen in the NFL, the Colts currently have a twenty
four percent chance to make the playoffs. How much does
that fluctuate or change if they signed Philip Rivers because
the model would would be skewed a bit in favor.
(01:02:12):
I guess of that signing, but I don't know, man.
Speaker 4 (01:02:15):
It was right around even with the loss. I think
it was right around, like a coin flip, even with
losing in Jacksonville.
Speaker 6 (01:02:23):
Right, it was like fifty one something.
Speaker 4 (01:02:25):
Again, if you purely want to play the numbers game.
Speaker 6 (01:02:27):
Just explain to coin flip right there.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
I'm sorry, people, Welcome to my world, James, A coin flip.
Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
You know, a chance over the final four weeks. It's
not the most Outlanders thought. Uh, but of course now
you're factoring in the quarterback situation at all. So yeah,
last night, and you know, if you want to look
ahead to this week. The Colts are double digit underdog
at Seattle, and Houston and Jacksonville are both touchdown plus
favorites at home. I want to say Jacksonville is the
Jets and the Texans have the Cardinals. Maybe it's vice
(01:02:56):
versa on that. So yeah, I mean, if you want
to play out the Vegas odds, which you know, be
careful of the NFL. But this doesn't look like great
week at all.
Speaker 3 (01:03:06):
All right, let's check it down right now, Mark and
tell everybody what we do know at this point in time, gentlemen,
we do know the Indiana Pacers have won four of
their last six. They win last night against the Sacramento
Kings over at the field House. Fun game to watch
in the fourth quarter. One sixteen one oh five was
the final score. Andrew Nemhark twenty eight points, twelve assists.
(01:03:28):
Benedict Mathern had twenty five points, passcal siakam Mad twenty three.
Did I see Russell Westbrook with a triple double last night?
James for Sacramento.
Speaker 6 (01:03:36):
I'm not gonna lie. When I was looking at him
on my TV screen, I was thinking, you could have
been a pacer. Could have been a pacer.
Speaker 3 (01:03:42):
Kevin Man, oh man, but they went four.
Speaker 4 (01:03:45):
Greater than Russell Westbrook's.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
Oh lord, how much fun is he to watch?
Speaker 1 (01:03:49):
Though?
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Just keeping every ball alive in the fourth quarter last night.
Speaker 4 (01:03:53):
So if Russell Westbrook can do it, can Philip Evers
do it?
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
Okay, Russ hasn't stopped. That's one one forty four Friday night.
The next game for the Indiana Pacers will be on
the road to take on the Philadelphia seventy six ers
seven o'clock, ten times six point thirty right here on
ninety three five and when I was seven to five,
the fan Colts of Zius coming up four to twenty
five PM on Sunday. James Boyd, if you had to bet,
(01:04:19):
who would be the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts
Sunday afternoon up in the northwest, Philip Rivers.
Speaker 6 (01:04:26):
Let's get crazy. You don't let this get out there
for nothing, So sign them, tell them, turn back the clock,
get the bing gay ready, let's roll.
Speaker 3 (01:04:37):
Colts are eight and five. They're currently in eighth place
in the AFC. As Kevin pointed out, last night's Sunday
night football game, not good for the Colts. Twenty two
to nineteen overtime win for Justin Herbert and the Los
Angeles Chargers. But here's the question. It's not just at quarterback.
There is a long list of injuries right now for
(01:04:58):
the Indianapolis Colts.
Speaker 4 (01:04:59):
Yeah, I got the three quarter Braden Smith neck concussion,
So could be looking at Jalen Travis, the rookie out
of Iowa State as the starter. The old line's been
really healthy this season, but could be looking at a
new starter there. Defensively again, Mooney Ward, we talked about it.
Just awful, third time in concussion protocol this year. I
still get the vibe Sauce Gardner not yet and the force, Butner,
(01:05:21):
I don't know. Part of me thinks next week, not
this week, but that remains to be seen.
Speaker 3 (01:05:28):
College football Heisman invitees have been announced. Fernando Mendoza from
Indiana is on his way to New York City for
the ceremony there, Julian saying from Ohio State, your guy
Jeremiah Love getting a little attention there. He'll be up
on stage there. And Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt is going
to be there as well. By the way, saw on
(01:05:48):
the paper this morning. Positional mister Football's have been announced.
Some of the area guys Miles McLoughlin have been following
all year long from Knox, but defensive lineman Jeremy Finch
from more In Central, kicker Van and Chris al Off
from Cathedral Kevin, linebacker Dane Bathurst from Carmel, defensive back
Casmer Hicks from Decatur Central, and offensive lineman CJ. Sifferis
(01:06:09):
from Center Grove. So that's positional mister footballs. This year.
It was a fun year in high school football here
in Indiana.
Speaker 6 (01:06:16):
It always is. In my opinion, that's not a cliche.
I love it, so shout out to all those who
got a chance to play under the lights.
Speaker 3 (01:06:22):
All right, we'll talk a little bit more about the
cult situation at quarterback and some good news the Indiana Pacers.
Like I said, fun fourth quarter last night and they
have won four out of six. We'll talk more about
that next anything else you wanted to throw in buy
U Penn State.
Speaker 4 (01:06:34):
It's an eight thirty tip tonight in Bloomington. According to Vegas,
Penn State is horrific. Fifteen and a half point favorite
for IU and again two straight losses for the Hoosiers.
Speaker 3 (01:06:47):
All right, it's coming up in a moment, we'll talk
a little Pacers and more cults along with your comments
at two three, nine, ten seventy. You can call us
up the old fashioned way or just send us a
notes on the text line. Either way, we'll get to
it as we rolled through the hour. Rick Carlisle Pacers
coach coming up nine o'clock at ninety three, five and seven.
Speaker 7 (01:07:04):
Looks like my guy, Fernando Mendozo. After that Ohio State
Jam with the number one Indiana Hoosiers getting to win
in a carry of five yards for Videll.
Speaker 8 (01:07:16):
That was a great game. Congratulations to Kurt Signetti, the
head coach, and the Indiana Hoosiers, and to you, Joe
and all Hooters to do well. There's I mean, that
was fun. That was a big win. And what I
mean you know how I feel about coach Signetty. What
he's done is nothing short of incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:07:34):
Yeah, it couldn't agree more.
Speaker 8 (01:07:36):
Guy just wins.
Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
Google them.
Speaker 3 (01:07:42):
Everybody's talking about Kurt Signetti right now. How about how
about just an Indiana domination of Monday Night football last night?
The whole pregame about Philip Rivers and then talking about
Kurt Signetti during the broadcast right there, let's go. Kurtzignetti
is what do you say about this guy? This is
one of the great stories we've been around. Kevin.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
It's amazing, said it to yesterday. It's the greatest I
said after the Orgon game, It's greatest coaching job, college
or pro sports. Funny, I was talking with someone that's
dealt with Kurtzig, n Eddie, I would say it's fair
to say dealt with more of the personal human side,
not the football coach side, the blue gator aid of
the press conference side, the the you know, obviously demeanor
(01:08:24):
on the sidelines, you know, dealt with him a little
bit more in a personal human element, in a very
non in front of the camera way, and said he
could not be more just down to earth and personable
and like, you know, respectful, caring, like not like I'm
the you know what, third highest paid coach in college football,
(01:08:46):
like not that ego whatsoever.
Speaker 3 (01:08:49):
And so I thought that was kind of cool to hear, because.
Speaker 4 (01:08:51):
You see so much of the persona of him, and
you know, it seems almost wwe like at times with
Kurtzig out of here, so boots on the ground for
Little Rose Bull visit yesterday for some members of the
athletic department, and now they will await a week from
Friday Alabama, Oklahoma, and then I you in the Rose
(01:09:12):
Bowl coming up January.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
First.
Speaker 4 (01:09:14):
Of course four o'clock, right, you have to have the
sun setting when the fourth quarter starts. Is that why
we kick off at four o'clock at the Rose Bull.
Speaker 3 (01:09:20):
Three thirty or four every year? Yeah, gotta love that.
And I just when you watch in the end, he
watched him. I'll never like. It's always entertaining to me.
He's on that sideline, James. He he looks mildly irritated
at all times, doesn't he. I don't know if I
put it mildly no, but I'm saying, even if there's
just nothing going on, he just looks irritated over there.
Speaker 6 (01:09:42):
I like to smirk. Even after they won that game,
he just smirking like.
Speaker 4 (01:09:45):
That was the hardest he tried to hide it. Yeah,
when he was walking to Fine Ryan Day. Yeah, we
got surprised. Jake Querry put this pull out before the
game on Saturday. I was a little surprised by this.
Jacob's question for indyannafics, if you were guaranteed a win
tomorrow over Ohio State, but in exchange, you would not
(01:10:09):
make a hoops Final four until at least twenty thirty five.
Would you make that deal so you win the Big
Ten title, but no hoops Final four for another ten years.
Seventy percent of people said yes, they would take the
Big Ten championship.
Speaker 6 (01:10:30):
I'm actually very surprised as that high.
Speaker 3 (01:10:33):
I was stunned. That's probably immediate gratification right now though,
right that's the shark, that's the shiny, sparkly object right
in front of you right now.
Speaker 4 (01:10:40):
Well yeah, but I mean this is also pregame, right
and I think we've talked about it all along. Obviously
Saturday Night mattered Indiana. You never want to, you know,
Big Ten championship. It's Ohio State, et cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 6 (01:10:52):
But you thought have been more in the SEC.
Speaker 4 (01:10:54):
You'd rather have that than thirty two straight years without
a Final four at least thirty two According to Jake's
hypothetical here.
Speaker 6 (01:11:02):
I'm sucked because this is a state that's supposed to
be different for basketball. You guys are liars.
Speaker 4 (01:11:07):
Would you rather win Saturday Night or win the quarterfinal game.
Speaker 3 (01:11:10):
Of the Rosebull.
Speaker 6 (01:11:14):
That's a really good question. Man, give me the quarterfinal
game because we're staying alived for a national championship, right,
you'd think so, I mean, you can talk about the
scars of maybe not winning, and.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
You would beat an SEC team, which might matter some people.
Speaker 3 (01:11:29):
We don't.
Speaker 6 (01:11:29):
I thought I've been more in the SEC, Kevin, can
you explain to me?
Speaker 4 (01:11:32):
I know we don't people talk about the SEC like
I thought, in all seriousness, I thought it was important
for Notre Dame not only to make the national title
last year, but to beat an SEC team on the way. Yeah,
and that SEC team being Georgia too.
Speaker 3 (01:11:44):
I like that. But I also think it was important
to a lot of people who've grown up here and
been who's your fans their whole life. If that big
dench championship game had to been against Penn State or Wisconsin,
that'd be great. That nobody's going to turn that down
and you get all fired up and you're still happy.
But I think it meant somehow a little bit more
that it was Ohio State if not Michigan. I think
(01:12:04):
those two teams would have been different to play in
that championship game. Not only are you undefeated, not only
are you playing in this Big Ten championship game. But
you're gonna beat either Ohio State or Michigan along the way,
I think that would. I think who it was made
a little bit of a difference.
Speaker 4 (01:12:18):
Don't you come the final four for thirty two straight years?
Speaker 6 (01:12:22):
Nah, they're a liars.
Speaker 4 (01:12:24):
There's no way you said yes, folks.
Speaker 6 (01:12:27):
This is like when I'm watching Family Feud and they
say one hundred people we polled and they give some
absurd answer. I'm like, fortyse hundred people. We need to
diversify the crowd.
Speaker 5 (01:12:37):
Yeah, so show me the group, because there's no way
now I'm going to lean towards the younger crowd, perhaps
being on Twitter and not suffering through the previous you know,
having many years since I've been relevant in men's basketball
from a championship standpoint.
Speaker 6 (01:12:52):
So, nah, I can't. I can't get with that.
Speaker 4 (01:12:55):
One thing I want to make sure we mentioned from
the game on Saturday night is I'm in a text chain.
Definitely some die hard IU fans and they brought up
one of the bigger compliments they felt on Saturday night
was the Ohio State And again yesterday, what was my
thought process? Pretty much the whole day, I use defense,
like yes, Feranana Meidos is going to hoist his Heisman
(01:13:17):
trophy on Saturday night. But the Indiana defense is what
makes them this team. And the fact that Ohio State
felt the need or have to run a trick play
in a game that again for Ohio State's purposes, like
you would think they circle Michigan more where they circle
(01:13:37):
this playoff run more and not just like a flea
flicker or not just you know whatever, you know, some
sort of like semi trick play, like they run this
like double pass with you know, some crazy elements to
it to try and get down the field in Indiana
because they can't move it normally. With jeremih Smith with
Carnel Tait with the Heisman finalist Julian saying they couldn't
(01:13:59):
move the football normally down the field, they had to
revert to troation quite the trick play to try and
do that. You know, that was quite the compliment to
Brian Haynes and company there. I thought that was a
great point.
Speaker 6 (01:14:13):
Here's one for you. This is from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says,
the philip Rivers work out what the Colts took place
Monday nights per Source through the ball. Well, we'll see
what's next. And I can actually confirm that as well. Yeah,
I got some trying to do the Source game. People
just let you know. It's the weirdest thing ever, because
(01:14:34):
when you reach out to somebody and they give you
present or past tense, you're just like, huh so, but yeah,
apparently this happened last night and they're going to see
from there. So I guess today is all about figuring
out the details.
Speaker 4 (01:14:48):
Just where you inserted the joke of the grandpa woke
up after working out a little bit and you want
to see how he feels. I guess so, and like
I'm kind of joking, kind of serious though, but.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
It sounds like he works out every day. And I
have heard these stories along the way where he's throwing
passes of those high school kids all the time. I'll
all Brett Farva, how he used to do stuff like that,
And so it sounds like he's not just like getting
off off the couch like he You mentioned that that
he's put on full pads at some point in time.
Speaker 6 (01:15:16):
He ain't been hit in five years.
Speaker 3 (01:15:18):
That makes it different. I get you, but I'm just
still you know, at least he shows up in shape,
is my point.
Speaker 6 (01:15:24):
I got to see it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:25):
Are you highly entertained by the idea of him starting
or is there any part of the human element in
you that's scared for that man's life.
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
I think everybody's scared for a forty four year old
guy that hasn't played for almost a time.
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
I tell you how you are as a human. If
you're highly entertained by it, I.
Speaker 6 (01:15:41):
Would say I'm not scared for him because you have
a choice.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Can you bear Kevin? Can you be both? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:15:47):
I feel like you should be scared when you don't
have options. He has options. I'm not gonna be scared
for him. You get out there, I want to see
what happens. Hell, you throw that paycheck at me, I'll
go out there. I'll take the bits from the Seattle Defense.
Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
Over under on Mark one of the half plays Mark
Peak Bay or whatever the hell's gonna be. Pray I might,
I might leave this earth, but at least that check will.
Speaker 4 (01:16:10):
Daughters before you get on the plane, Brother.
Speaker 5 (01:16:12):
Mark, I don't think we'd never played this on the air,
but I'm going to interview with uh Lobusi the Rapper,
and they asked him if he will get into the
ring like Davonte Davis.
Speaker 6 (01:16:20):
He's like, nah, it beat me. He was like, with
twenty million photoms, No, don't do that. You wouldn't be
alive to spend the money.
Speaker 3 (01:16:28):
Uh. Coming up in a moment, we will talk a
little bit more about this crazy situation we find ourselves
in the highs and the lows all at once here
in Indiana. And also Rick Carlisle, the head coach of
the Indiana Pacers, stops by at nine o'clock. That's all
straight ahead. In ninety three five and one on seven five,
the fans Mark Dyton put all the Golden Girls on
(01:16:50):
the loop over there Colts training facilities. Let's get going there.
Retirement home for a former football players. Coming back Kevin
could possibly happen later on today. Apparently we learned that
Philip Rivers might have worked out for the Colts last night.
By some reports.
Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
You're more worried about rivers arm strength or River's ability
to move.
Speaker 3 (01:17:11):
Well armstreng I don't know if he's going to threaten
anybody forty yards down field. I worry more about his
ability to move I'm.
Speaker 4 (01:17:16):
Not saying forty yards down the field, I'm saying, and.
Speaker 3 (01:17:18):
You could throw, you know, you could throw fifteen twenty
yards downfield.
Speaker 5 (01:17:21):
His arm strength was a struggle five years ago with
the velocity that's necessary, right, I mean that man has
lived late in his career to Mark's point off of percise,
percise timing, accuracy and fading arm strength.
Speaker 4 (01:17:37):
I think it's fair to say. And arm strength to
me is velocity as well. What is that five years later?
Speaker 5 (01:17:43):
He was always a statue like he was never you know,
he's never hauling ass downfielder for anybody. So it was
always his arm strength that was his bread and butter.
And you know when he was with the Colts the
last time we were like, oh boy, this is this
is kind of tailing off relatively quickly. I can imagine
it's improved with time.
Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
Yeah, the two things are the last time found some
things at a group.
Speaker 5 (01:18:07):
Maybe he's been in the stretch lab, I don't know.
May he's getting his rotator cuff stretched down a weekly.
Speaker 3 (01:18:11):
Basically he's come to the right place. Though, if you
listen to the fan during all the breaks, we we
are keeping older men healthy here, amen to that. That's
what we do. So Philip Rivers I think is Taylor
made for being around Indianapolis. We'll we'll hook him up, Kevin,
We'll hook him.
Speaker 6 (01:18:28):
Up so today, Kevin, to be honest with you, he's old.
Like that needs to be stated. You have not played.
This isn't Tom Brady who played until he was forty five. Like, yeah,
there's reasons you left. If you could have kept playing,
why didn't you. So that's that's a factor to certainly consider.
So I would say the mobility part doesn't really bother me.
(01:18:49):
He never really was that type of player. Can you
sling it still?
Speaker 3 (01:18:52):
Right?
Speaker 4 (01:18:53):
I just mean even a step slower, like I mean
all of a sudden if this dude who couldn't move
in the pocket to begin with now is dropping in
the poet because you're not a dropping back well, and
that's the unknown that you would have like watching him
in a workout. Okay, I think you can probably get
a decent gauge. It's still not facing the defense, obviously,
but you can get somewhat of a gauge on that
(01:19:15):
aspect of it. How he operates in a collapsing pocket
against one of the best defense in the NFL. Keep
the ambulance close by.
Speaker 3 (01:19:26):
We'res Charlie Whitehurst touchdown Jesus when we need.
Speaker 4 (01:19:29):
Him, isn't he with what's her name?
Speaker 3 (01:19:31):
Jewel?
Speaker 5 (01:19:33):
He's probably not coming back environment well, she has that
famous song hole savior soul. That might be Philip Rivers
case if he sees Leondon Williams coming down the pipeline.
Speaker 3 (01:19:43):
Coming up in a few minutes where Carlisle's gonna stop
by talk about the Pacers having won four of their
last six. Last night, guys, they got seventy six points
from the trio of Andrew Nemhart, Benedict Matherin and Pascal Siakam,
and that's kind of been one of their recipes for
success in these last six games. And they've they've I
was listening for a while to the radio broadcast with
(01:20:03):
Mark last night. He was talking about statistically over these
last six seven games, they've also been rising through the
NBA ranks. They were down near the bottom in a
lot of those categories and they're starting to kind of
rise back through again. But with those three playing the
way they've been playing and getting some contributions from some
of the other bit players, so to speak, they won
four of six. It hasn't been a murderer's row of
(01:20:24):
a schedule, but they're winning.
Speaker 4 (01:20:26):
Yeah, And I thought Jerriff Walker gave them a little
jolt there to start the fourth quarter. They were real
and they were on the ropes after that. Just horrific
close there to end the third quarter. I mean their
lead was gone, the lead that had I feel like
it had gone to twenty, but it was fading fast,
and I thought Jaris Walker just a couple buckets there
(01:20:48):
and they ended up losing the lead completely. But still
it was one of these where like you could you
didn't have to turn to matherin Themhart siakam right away.
Speaker 3 (01:20:57):
Yeah, they ended.
Speaker 4 (01:20:57):
Up going, you know with them about seven eight minutes
to go in the fourth.
Speaker 3 (01:21:01):
Court kind of took over for a.
Speaker 4 (01:21:04):
Nemart hit a volleyball line three, Matheren hit a pull
up three on the break and them Hart hit one
more and it was it was a time out there
for the Kings. And the Ethan Thompson story. Looking forward
to chatting with Rick about that because I think it's
a pretty cool NBA story and what he's given him
makes his debut last week, and how he's starting.
Speaker 3 (01:21:21):
And they're gonna have to make some decisions on a
couple of two way ten day contracts. You can only
give two at a certain point before you either got
to keep a guy or send him back into the ether.
But they've got a few decisions to make as well.
Speaker 4 (01:21:34):
You'd rather watch Brett Rippan start against Seattle or Philip Rivers.
Speaker 6 (01:21:39):
Philip from the notoriety.
Speaker 4 (01:21:41):
Standpoint, trying to win the football game, I'm probably going
on Brett Rippon.
Speaker 6 (01:21:48):
I just it's hard for me to picture a guy
who hasn't been in an NFL a locker room in
five years.
Speaker 3 (01:21:53):
I do want to see why.
Speaker 5 (01:21:54):
Are we you going to see Tyler Warren and the
Wildcat for four quarter I might not be better. I
do want to see if the Colts worked out any
other quarterbacks that we're unaware of, Like was it just
Philip Rivers or where there's this kind.
Speaker 3 (01:22:04):
Of like come on down, you've got to work out
with the Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:22:08):
Shane Steck and Rappaport right now, Philip Rivers who worked
out already, good starbus. Another set of eyes and ears
for Riley Leonard as he did in the pre ject process.
Do not come here if you ain't gonna play. I'm
not I'm not gonna come here be the backup.
Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
No, no, he's not coming here to be the backup.
Speaker 4 (01:22:24):
Shane Steikeen looks up from the all right, Rivers, that's
a good throw and a mean Riley Leonard playing through
a knee injury is less than ideal. Riley Leonard needs
his legs, and.
Speaker 3 (01:22:35):
Aren't you just are you maybe also just looking for
somebody to play for one or two weeks so you
get Riley Leonard back.
Speaker 5 (01:22:41):
Maybe maybe they're doing like a I'm Philip Rivers not
restarting my Hall of Fame clock to come here and
be the backup for one to two weeks. Maybe they're
doing a Frankenstein where they're going to keep Philip Rivers'
upper body and they're gonna take Riley Leonard's legs, and
then all of a sudden, Philip Rivers is mobile as
hell and he's slinging it down the field.
Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
Alec Pierce looks like Michael Vick out there.
Speaker 3 (01:23:02):
All right, coming up at a moment. Rick Carlyle the
Indiana Pacers again. They win last night, one sixteen, one
o five. We were talking about that a minute ago.
The Pacers playback presented by CNJ Water, the official water
treatment partner of the Indiana Pacers Cnjwater dot Com. And
they'll be helping us out all year long as we
cover the Pacers. And that means a little chat with
the Rick Carlisle coming up next ninety three to five
(01:23:22):
and one oh seven.
Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Rick Carlisle gonna join us here in a few Good
Tuesday morning to you. At nine o'clock hour, The Philip
Rivers watch continues for the Colts. James, you said the
workout actually was last night.
Speaker 6 (01:23:37):
Yeah, I can confirm that, So they did work him
out last night, not later today. So I wonder if
that exerbies the timeline at all with a decision coming
perhaps at any moment.
Speaker 4 (01:23:50):
Yeah, And we just update everybody on where the Colts
quarterback situation is. Four quarterbacks in the roster, torn Achilles
for Daniel Jones Anthony Richardson's eye injury, I do not
expect to return eminently by any means, if at all,
the rest of the season. Riley Leonard sounds like a
banged up with a knee injury. His status up in
the air for Sunday, so Brett Rippin the only healthy quarterbacks.
(01:24:13):
Will continue to keep you updated on that storyline. They
won four of their last six. They beat the Kings
last night and the inside of Gamebridge Field House. The
Indiana Pacers now headed into a stretch with a lot
of practice time. I would think here with just two
games in the next nine days or so, and to
talk more about it. Rick Carlile joins us now coach,
good morning to you.
Speaker 1 (01:24:32):
How you doing good?
Speaker 4 (01:24:34):
Fine, big fourth quarter from your top three last night?
Some shot making certainly as the lead evaporated, and I
thought some big time hustle plays from the great story
that is Ethan Thompson. What did you see change there
once Sacramento took the lead there.
Speaker 9 (01:24:50):
Late, Well, we we button things down defensively. That was
a big thing. I mean, you know, a seventeen point
defense to the quarter in the fourth was absolutely needed.
And right now, you know, our identity has got to
be that we're a defense first team. There's evidence that
(01:25:11):
were very capable of it. You know, last eight games,
I think we're ranked fourth and defense in the league.
I mean that's a real positive thing.
Speaker 1 (01:25:21):
You know.
Speaker 9 (01:25:21):
Offensively, you know, things things come and go with shot
making and this, that and the other. But uh, you know,
the defense in the fourth was key and then you know,
Nemhart had a monster game. Uh Siakam played extremely well,
as you know, virtually it seems like he always does.
And then Matt turn was was terrific and so.
Speaker 1 (01:25:45):
Good Win. Uh got a more or less an off
day today, two days of practice and then hit the
Philly rick.
Speaker 6 (01:25:53):
When you look at Andrew Nimharne's career, and I'm thinking
back to his rookie season, I believe he had a
game winner against the Lakers that the buzzer. So he's
made big shots before, but how have you seen him
just continue to grow in those fourth quarters, the big
moments and embrace the challenges that kind of a way
when things get tight.
Speaker 1 (01:26:11):
Yeah, fearless player, you know it really is. And had
a you know.
Speaker 9 (01:26:16):
Had an attitude of just kind of this moxie when
he came in here as a as a first year player.
You know, he was he was good in training camp.
You know, he's one of our better defensive players. Was
not spectacular offensively, but.
Speaker 1 (01:26:34):
We knew that. You know, he had the lineage. You know,
he had a career at Gonzaga.
Speaker 9 (01:26:42):
I think they went to the final game or the
final four, whatever it was his senior year and I
didn't even play in game one that year. Game two
I think we played maybe in Detroit that we played
or something. But he we needed him to guard I
think Kate Cunningham and his rookie year and he and
he came in there and and was terrific and really solid,
(01:27:05):
and then it became clear that the thing to do
maybe to put him as a secondary ball handler and
a hybrid two guard and a guy that could take
a matchup to start games. And so you know, we
kind of ended up going that direction in in relatively
short order, and that's how it's gone. Now this year,
(01:27:27):
the role is is extremely different, you know, being the
main guy with the ball, the main guy taking a matchup.
And so one of the challenges has been, you know,
who can we put next to him? They can give
us a little ball handling, who is also a solid defender? Uh,
you know, who can who can make an open shot?
(01:27:48):
You know when when when he's feeling the heat and
getting a lot of extra attention and so, uh, you know,
the irony is Shepherd played one of his best games
against Denver and then then he got banged up, and
so you know, we're in Chicago and you know, we
had had Ethan Thompson on the on the roster for
a couple of days, and I just felt, you know,
(01:28:08):
it's time to give this guy an early look.
Speaker 1 (01:28:10):
And uh, he's a twenty five or twenty six year
old guy, so you know, it's not like he's your
typical first year player. He's been playing professional basketball for
five or six years. He just he just has a
a moxie and a and a tone about him, you know,
where he's just unafraid, looks like he belongs. And uh,
(01:28:32):
you know, he stepped right out in the end of
the game against Chicago and Frank it was hard to
get him out of the game, you know. So he
did well there last night.
Speaker 9 (01:28:39):
You know, I thought he was was solid again and so, uh,
you know that's as you mentioned, that's that's a that's
a really nice story. And as we move forward, you know,
we're gonna keep trying to get guys a little healthier
each day and uh and keeping it keep working on
who we are.
Speaker 1 (01:28:59):
Rick.
Speaker 4 (01:28:59):
For those of mine, miss, could you share on specifically
that Friday game with Chicago. I don't know if maybe
you found out Shepherd's status for the game, but you know,
Ethan Thompson was originally I think drilling was some of
your developmental guys over at the United Center. And then
you realize what it was going to look like for
you that night, and that he was going to play
important minutes for you, and you had to make a
(01:29:20):
call over there to say, hey, we got to get
Ethan Thompson off the floor. He's going to play some
pivotal minutes for the big league tonight. How how unique
is that? And I guess what does that say about?
You know, this kid who just made his NBA debut
a few nights earlier.
Speaker 9 (01:29:36):
It's it's it's it's certainly not a typical year in
a lot of ways. And knew we knew Shepherd wasn't
going to play. He wasn't on the trip. You know,
the question was, you know, the plan was to start Matthews,
who had been playing well, and then you know, kind
of go from there. And it seemed to me like
the best thing to do would be to start Matthews
(01:29:57):
and then you know, we'll toss we'll toss Ethan in there.
But you know what happened was we had some of
our interns come up to Chicago. You know, we're working
on getting Quintin Jackson back. One of the things he
needs to do is is play. And so after shoot
around on Friday, a group of low minute guys and interns,
(01:30:19):
we're gonna play. And you know, that's Jalen Peter, That's
that's Quinton Jackson. I think Ethan assumed he was part
of the part of that group too, which you know,
which is good, you know, and look, if he had played,
it probably wouldn't have you know, may not have made
that big a difference. But as we're on the bus
headed back to the hotel after shoot around, you know,
(01:30:40):
I called over there to see if he was playing,
because my plan was, you know, not going to be
to start him, but to get him in the game
pretty early. And somebody said, yeah, they know, they just
started playing. I said, well, look pull him out because
he's probably gonna play. He's gonna play minutes and I
don't know how many.
Speaker 1 (01:30:59):
And so they pulled him out, you know. So that
was that was kind of it. But that's that's.
Speaker 9 (01:31:03):
How this year's kind of been. There's been some unique
aspects to it. Challenges slash opportunities, and so, you know,
one of the one of the challenges is the injuries,
and then a great example of opportunity is is Ethan
Thompson being the right place at the right time.
Speaker 4 (01:31:19):
Basis one four of six. Again, as Rick Carlisle laid out,
there a little bit of time off. They'll have Philly
in Washington coming up on a Friday and Sunday, but
not a ton of game action here over the next
ten days or so. Coach, your next win will be
one thousand for your career. I think you'd become I
believe it's the eleventh coach in NBA history to reach
(01:31:43):
the Comma mark, if you will. Does that matter to
you at all? Does that mean anything to you?
Speaker 3 (01:31:48):
That number?
Speaker 1 (01:31:51):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 9 (01:31:51):
I you know, I it always feels like it's the
best not to talk about things like this and just
and just try to keep you know, but it just
it just means I've I've been very blessed over the
years with a lot of great situations, great ownership, terrific players,
(01:32:14):
a very supportive family, all that. But I, you know,
I don't want to put the horse before the card.
I mean, this year is a very good example of
how you know, winning one NBA game is extremely difficult.
You know, and when you when and when you get
extraordinary circumstances as we've had this year, you know, putting
(01:32:36):
the chicken before the egg, or the egg before the
chicken or whatever it is, just doesn't just doesn't feel right.
Speaker 6 (01:32:44):
Rick, to look at other guys in your ross. You've
stepped up Garrison Matthews. I mean, the guy is an
all out shooter. How have you seen m perhaps find
his rhythm as of let on it early on, you know,
once in the ball as well. But it seems like
he's gotten comfortable just being integrated into this off fans
with obviously new teammates.
Speaker 1 (01:33:03):
Well, you know, he's he's a guy that's a gunslinger.
He's gonna he's gonna play his game.
Speaker 9 (01:33:07):
He knows who he is, he knows what's get, what
gets him on an NBA roster, and what gets him
on the floor.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
The challenge was that you know.
Speaker 9 (01:33:16):
He he had he'd been I believe the last cut
on New York it was down to him and Landry Shammitt,
And the.
Speaker 1 (01:33:24):
Word we got was that, you know, he had shot
the ball as well or maybe even a little bit
better than Shammitt. But there was just you know, the
tie breaker was just you know, the ultimate fit with
the team and all that kind of stuff. I don't
really know, that doesn't really matter. But he was sitting out,
you know, for probably the better part of the month,
and you know, we went through four or five different
(01:33:46):
guys before we got to him, and in fact, in fact,
you know, we had the one workout in Dallas where
we worked out three guys.
Speaker 9 (01:33:55):
Eventually all three guys ended up on the roster. None
of the three are on around the club anymore, and
so we were cycling onto another group of two or
three guys, and we thought we had a group of
three that we're going to come in for a workout,
but one of them was handed overseas another one had
(01:34:17):
some personal things going on, and the timing wasn't right,
and so you know, Garrison was the only guy available.
Speaker 1 (01:34:23):
So we brought him in and.
Speaker 9 (01:34:25):
We needed shooting, we needed spacing, and the task was
to help him get shape, you know, and so Woyd
Pierce did a really great job, just you know, starting
kind of from scratch. You know, you can be at
home and you can be working out on your own
and and that kind of stuff, but you know, it's
it's it's virtually impossible to simulate NBA practices in NBA games,
(01:34:49):
and so it took, you know, it took a good
four or five days to get him to where you know,
he felt like his legs were there, et cetera, et cetera.
His first game was at Cleveland whenever that I was
two and a half weeks ago. You know, he went
in the game, he got some clean shots off, nothing
went in, but the signs were good, and it kind
of went from there.
Speaker 1 (01:35:09):
And so when he got to the end of his
first ten day and this we're talking about a ten
day team injury hardship contract, I mean, it's like a
whole sentence, like you got to say a whole sentence
to describe what it is. You know, you know, he
hadn't made he hadn't made a lot of shots yet,
but it just felt to us like, you know, he
(01:35:30):
had done the work and he was close, and so, uh,
you know, we brought him back. In the first game,
he uh, he got it going. And then you know,
last night.
Speaker 9 (01:35:40):
He hit some big shots, had a four point play,
et cetera. And with him, you know, he's a guy
you got to count for on a scouting report. I
mean you don't, you don't account for him. I mean,
I think in one or two years, in the last
four or five he's led the league in four point plays, et.
Speaker 1 (01:35:57):
Cetera, et cetera. So an easy guy to like, you know,
he's just he's gritty, he's he's kind of you know
who we are, you know right now as a team,
and so we're happy to have him on board.
Speaker 6 (01:36:15):
So you talked about bringing in guys for workouts, and
the Colts are or have actually brought in Philip Rivers,
forty four year old quarterback in for a workout. So
in your coaching or playing career, do you remember the
oldest player you played with or coached?
Speaker 7 (01:36:32):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:36:33):
Boy, trying to think, well, you know, Dirk was the
oldest I think that I coached that he was. He
was forty, you know, in his twenty first year. Look,
Jason Kidd was thirty eight when we won the championship
with him, and and there have been others, you know,
and uh, you know James Johnson I think was thirty
seven last year. Yeah, there there's been there's been guys
(01:36:55):
like that. But but I will say this, do not
underestimate change. I mean, I think it's pretty clear that
he's the best coach of quarterbacks you know, really anybody's
seen in the last several years. I mean, what he's
done with a whole long list of guys, and so
to me, the guys that the guys that master, I
(01:37:16):
think he's done an incredible, amazing job this year. There's
a long way to go in their season, you know,
I know, things things can things can look uh can
look dreary at times, but uh, there's an upbeat, upbeat
fan base, you know, super upbeat franchise, as is the
Pacers and uh and we're really told for them.
Speaker 4 (01:37:36):
That's Rick Carlisle again. Bass have one four of six.
They beat Sacramento last night. They've got Philly coming up
this weekend. He's with us here on the Payloffs Slickers Hotline.
Did I hear you were at the Purdue game on Saturday?
Speaker 1 (01:37:50):
I was, Yeah, I was. Uh.
Speaker 9 (01:37:53):
I was there with with Sonny Beck from Bex Hybrids,
which was which is a c company. Sonny and and
uh and his uh his operation are supporters of driving Dish, which.
Speaker 1 (01:38:06):
We're grateful for.
Speaker 9 (01:38:07):
And he he invited me to a game a long
time ago, and so yeah, I went up there and
had amazing seats one in an atmosphere had the I
had the privilege of sitting with Sunny on my right
and Brian Cardinal on my left. Okay, so there's two
living legends.
Speaker 1 (01:38:27):
Now. Cardinal not only not only is he a for
Due legend, but Cardinal played for US on the twenty
eleven championship team in Dallas. And I'm gonna tell you
a short story about Cardinals. So in game six out
we had we had played the series in the finals.
In the fourth game, we had to make some adjustments
(01:38:49):
to our rotation because of matchups, and so we started
playing Brian Cardinal over another more you know, more established
household name type player.
Speaker 9 (01:38:58):
Well was playing effectively. You know, his game is not
the most beautiful game in the world, but when you
look at his production and what happens as a winning player,
the guy's pretty amazing what he did in his career.
So we won game We won game four to tie
the series. We won Game five. In game six at Miami,
(01:39:21):
we're up three to two with a chance to close
out the series, which Key gets his second foul like
five minutes into the game, and so boom, here comes
Cardinal now the score is we're either down five or
down seven.
Speaker 1 (01:39:38):
I forget which. Dirk had had a rough shot making
night to start the game, Vegas two fouls. Cardinal comes
in the game. We go from let's say it was
down five at the end of the first quarter, we
were up seven. Okay, we go plus twelve with Cardinal
in the game. Dirk comes back in the game. Dirk
(01:40:03):
is continuing it's continuing to have trouble making shots. So
we go. We get into halftime and Cardinal of Dirt
were really good friends. And in Cardinal's seat was right
next to Dirk's in the locker room. And as we
walk in at the Koch staff, Cardinal was in there,
and the locker room is pretty quiet, but we still
had a two point lead, and Cardinals saying, this is great, man,
(01:40:27):
and he was calling Dirty Dirty Dirty Dirk was Dirt,
Dirk's uh nickname.
Speaker 9 (01:40:31):
He goes dirty, this is great. You got all the
misses out, bro, You's got to keep shooting.
Speaker 1 (01:40:36):
This is going to be great. This is gonna be awesome, man.
And so and so we we come in and we
we end up setting up a play to try to
get Dirk an open shot with JJ Ray has set
a pin down for him. He comes off, hits the
shot in the second half. He may have missed one shot,
but he was great. But the Cardinals, Cardinals impact on
(01:41:00):
that championship is is always going to be overlooked. But
he's he's one of the most resourceful players I've ever
been around. And when you walk around the Mackie Mackie
Center with him, you know, the guy, it's like it's
like walking around with Tom Brady, you know, I mean,
he's just uh everybody, everybody knows and loves him, and
(01:41:23):
uh and and and I certainly know why.
Speaker 4 (01:41:26):
That some great, great stuff, absolute Purdue legend. Brian Cardinal. Well,
we'll end with this coach, and as always, we appreciate
the time. I did have a chuckle a couple of
games ago. You said afterwards in regards to timeouts that
it would be great if you could buy timeouts like
vows and Wheel of Fortune? Are you more Wheel of Fortune?
Are you more Jeopardy?
Speaker 1 (01:41:49):
Oh? Gosh, I like both. But yeah, I mean, look
those timeouts, you're not out of timeouts. They just have
a price, and so you gotta you just got to
decide if it's worth it to take to take one
and spend a you know, a technical free throw at work,
(01:42:10):
give the team the possession back, as I described after
the game. And I don't mean to make fun of
it or make light of it or anything like that.
But if the other team already has the ball and
you feel like your guys need you know, a minute,
fifteen seconds, you know, for whatever reason. Maybe it's maybe you.
Speaker 9 (01:42:30):
Just don't have a lot of guys left on your
roster that night, and they you just feel like they
need a little bit of a break to finish the game. Whatever,
you know, if it's already the other team's ball, it's
it's one technical free throw.
Speaker 1 (01:42:41):
It's not It's not the end of the world, you know.
But I don't like doing it. I only do it
when it's when I feel it's necessary. We didn't do
it at all last year or the year before. I
don't think things have been extraordinary circumstances this year. So
sometimes sometimes it happens like that.
Speaker 4 (01:42:59):
Picture an rs E l N E and you up
there getting some letters there and the end of Wheel
of Fortune. I'm always debating what I would go with
their c D.
Speaker 3 (01:43:09):
Would you go with val, would you would gotta go Val.
Speaker 6 (01:43:12):
I feel like you gotta go Val, gotta go Val.
Speaker 4 (01:43:13):
With this RS.
Speaker 9 (01:43:14):
Well, some of the you know there's like on Instagram,
there's there's some of these things where people are making
the wrong guesses at what the butt and what the
puzzle says, and some of the stuff is you know,
it transcends, you know, the question of which value buy.
Speaker 1 (01:43:29):
Let's just put that way.
Speaker 4 (01:43:31):
I need documentary on this, say, the Least Pacers night
off tonight, so I guess you could watch Little Wheel
Fortune a little Jeopardy. They'll be back Friday six ers
and Sunday afternoon. They've got the wizards inside of gamebridge
Field House coach. Thank you as always, we'll talk to
you next week.
Speaker 1 (01:43:45):
All right, guys, pickure.
Speaker 4 (01:43:46):
Rick Carlisle right there, Payless Slickers, Hotline, Little Brian Cardinal,
Little Ethan Thompson, Old Dirk Novitsky, Little Wheel of Fortune,
a little bit of everything. PACER's playing better ball here recently.
That is now four of Mark Dyton's check it out.
Speaker 3 (01:44:03):
We will start with the Indianapolis Colts, who apparently James
Boyd last night brought in forty four year old Philip
Rivers to have a look see at quarterback to see
if maybe he can help them out of a jam.
Right now, what can we expect next.
Speaker 6 (01:44:19):
Either they sign him where they don't, So I would
expect that news to pop off at any moments today
because certainly it is Newsworthy.
Speaker 3 (01:44:28):
A lot of injury problems. Riley Leonard, the backup who's
replaced the out for the year, Daniel Jones. He's got
a knee ligament problem and he is listed as week
to week. Brett Rippon is the other quarterback that the
Colts might turn to at some point in time, But
that's not even the beginning of the injury list. There's
a lot of major stuff going on right now.
Speaker 4 (01:44:47):
Kevin Bowen, yes, obviously the three at quarterback like you've mentioned,
Jeff the Towny Kielles for Daniel Jones, the knee injury
for Riley Leonard, which could impact Sunday. Anthony Richardson's return
is not happening anytime soon with the eye injury above
Break Smith neck concussion for him, this would be his
first game missed of the season. If he cannot go
on Sunday, likely rookie right tackle Jalen Travis into the
(01:45:10):
starting lineup, and then probably The most jarring news yesterday
was for the third time in three months, concussion protocol
for Tavarius Ward. You just, obviously it's awful to hear
that news. I don't know if I can recall ever
seeing a cult player being concussion protocol three times in
three months. So, you know, he has been very upfront
(01:45:34):
about how difficult the symptoms were in the previous concussion dizzyness, vomiting,
really said he didn't feel like himself for a full
month after that in debate of playing football ever again.
And now here we are three games later and he's
in concussion protocol. So I hate to even bring up
the questions, but they are there. Will he play again
(01:45:56):
the season and potentially will he play again?
Speaker 3 (01:46:01):
Do we get any come of an update later on
this week on DeForest Buckner, Sauce Gardner, how they're doing.
Speaker 4 (01:46:05):
Yeah, so to Forest Buckner is eligible to come off
of r maybe Sunday. I don't know. Part of me thinks,
you know, you get an extra day next week with
a Monday night game. Maybe it's another week with that
neck injury. As sauce Gardner, I always felt like it
would be multiple games, but nothing official on that all.
Speaker 3 (01:46:21):
Right coltson Seahawks for twenty five Sunday afternoon. You'll hear
it right here at ninety three five one oh seven
five the Fan. We'll wait and see who the quarterback
might be. College football, the Heisman invites have been announced.
Fernando Mendoza from Indiana University is one of the four
that'll be invited up to New York City.
Speaker 1 (01:46:37):
There.
Speaker 3 (01:46:37):
Julian Sane from Ohio State, Diego Pavia from Vanderbilt, and
Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame will also be there. College
basketball tonight, down it in Bloomington, Indiana, we'll take on
Penn State. Kevin. You mentioned earlier that Penn State is
not thought to be a very good basketball team.
Speaker 1 (01:46:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:46:55):
I mean they're eight and one, so record wise you
would say, wait what, But they have played absolute nobody,
and the odds makers have this as a fifteen and
a half point favorite for Indiana. I was pretty disappointed
about how they responded to that Minnesota loss. I mean,
they got down sixteen to nothing to Little Rowle on Saturday.
(01:47:15):
You obviously fought back, but still lost that game. I
would say, you know, it was pretty clear who the
better team was, so you gotta take care of business.
This is not a win that would help your resume
per se. Now getting you're at Kentucky Saturday, who is
also at a really rough start to the season, but
a true road game would definitely help from a resume standpoint. So, yeah,
take care of business. Penn State team their best players
(01:47:37):
of freshman, very young team and a lot of a
lot of turnover all.
Speaker 3 (01:47:42):
Right, later on we will later on this week, It'll
be Friday, Indiana Pacers will play again in Philadelphia, coming
off that victory last night against Sacramento won sixteen to
one oh five was the final score there. You heard
from Rick Carlisle with the guys just a moment ago.
Andrew Nemhard had twenty eight points twelve assists. There was
a point during the fourth quarter there when the game
(01:48:02):
was on the line, they were down one on one
ninety seven. He was just nails for about two minutes there,
got them back in the lead. Mathern also hit a
three during that point in time, and then they just
put it away down the stretch.
Speaker 4 (01:48:14):
Yeah, some big, big shots from them Hard and then
yeah Mathering those three straight threes got you back in front.
And then you know, Siakam did his thing, and you know,
as we talked about with rick Ethan Thompson, just making
some plays, keeping a few extra possessions alive, you know,
right now, that's kind of how the Spacers team needs
to be wired. They've got those big three scoring some others.
And I thought Jars Walker had a nice start at
(01:48:35):
the fourth quarter as well, and you're obviously looking for
more from him.
Speaker 3 (01:48:39):
Yep, gotta love that. Also Monday Night football last night,
Chargers beat the Eagles twenty two nineteen and coming back
full circle to where we started here, that's not good
news for the Indianapolis Colts, is it.
Speaker 4 (01:48:50):
No? So right now the Colts are the eighth team,
so that would be outside of the seven team field.
Now they have the head to head over the Chargers.
And if you look at the Chargers final four games
at Chiefs at Cowboys, Texans at Broncos, Broncos could be
playing for the one seed the final week of the season.
Speaker 3 (01:49:10):
So I mean that's a.
Speaker 4 (01:49:12):
Notable schedule there down the stretch. Now, the problem is
more the Colts need to be better than the Chargers
by a game here over the final four weeks. Like basically,
I have no quarterback correct Like, basically, I would sum
it up as I think the Colts will get enough help,
but they also have to walk through the door. And
(01:49:33):
right now, walking through the doors the hard part given
you don't know who the hell is your quarterback on Sunday.
It might be a grandpa, it might be a dude
making his first career start with a bum knee.
Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
Wait and see who gets off the bus in Seattle
on Sunday.
Speaker 4 (01:49:45):
Unfortunately, there's a lot of guys not even taking that
plane out there.
Speaker 3 (01:49:49):
Mark Lewis, do it like pro wrestling.
Speaker 5 (01:49:50):
Have a guy dressed all in black and then he
reveals himself as the game's about to kick.
Speaker 3 (01:49:54):
I'm like, oh my god, Ryan's that might be your
best idea ever.
Speaker 1 (01:50:00):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:50:00):
Mark, He had the day off yesterday. Recap in the NFL,
we had the Bears do with the Green Bay Packers,
your favorite team. They lost, But that's okay. I thought
it was all from the top rope. I mean, he
can stick it. No teams.
Speaker 5 (01:50:12):
They're not the seventy two Dolphins going undefeated. They put
up a hell of a second half. It was a
disappointing ending, but they also play him again in two
weeks and I have every confidence that Ben Johnson will
get it done.
Speaker 3 (01:50:23):
All right, anything else you want to throw in? James,
My guess with that comment, by the way, about that
you would never come in off the top rope, would
you never?
Speaker 2 (01:50:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:50:32):
How you had to do a respond with eighty mental
stat line? One catch?
Speaker 7 (01:50:37):
Well?
Speaker 6 (01:50:38):
How many time?
Speaker 3 (01:50:38):
About this season? How about this?
Speaker 1 (01:50:39):
I can't say I appreciate the question, but I acknowledge
the question.
Speaker 3 (01:50:43):
What Rick said, Kevin ask him about a thousandth win?
All right, we'll get to some of your feedback on
the quarterback situation for the Indianapolis Cults coming up at
a moment here seventy we want to text in. Now's
a good time to do that. We'll get to some
of those. You can even call if you'd like. Again,
it's the Fan Mordic Show at ninety three five and
one seven five Fan Oh, Mark Dyton, you could be
(01:51:06):
in line to be the quarterback for the Indianapolis Cults.
We talked about earlier. You got two plays in you?
What do you got? Sure?
Speaker 5 (01:51:12):
Duck and run and then we're gonna do the Statue
of Liberty play. I believe you and you and James
are both younger than Philip Rivers.
Speaker 3 (01:51:18):
So are you Kevin? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:51:19):
So is Shane Steichen for four years younger than him?
Speaker 6 (01:51:22):
About say I better be younger than him? Good lord?
Forty four. It was funny because I was gonna tell
you guys this. I went and played basketball, like I
hope Friday and yeah, they have my birthday. I turned thirty.
So I get to the gym and the lady scans
my car at the Jim Mersey YMCA, and I thought
because I hadn't been in a while, that's why she
stopped me. And she was like, no, I need you
(01:51:42):
to like come back and you got to get your
account corrected or something. I was like, or no, she's
an updated and I was like, okay, what's there an update?
She was like, well, we have to give you an
adult account. And I was like, I thought I already
was an adult and she said, no, you were a
young adult. I was like, oh dang, So that was
funny to hear. I was like, I got called old.
They had thirty month holds on your car. Yeah, and
then they raised the price. So I was like, what
(01:52:03):
the heck is like, I want to be young? Yeah,
So I was thinking I can hope with jamb for free.
I'll might not be seeing me no mo. So that
was funny.
Speaker 3 (01:52:12):
You can get the Senior Citizens discount soon, right, Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:52:14):
Hopefully I got a couple great hairs coming in. You know,
really you're legit.
Speaker 3 (01:52:19):
Oh wow. It's the Fan Morning Show with Kevin Bowen,
James Boyd, Mark Dyton, and we were discussing the quarterback
possibilities for the Indianapolis Colts. As are the Indianapolis Colts.
What do you suppose those those conversations sound like behind
those walls, Kevin?
Speaker 4 (01:52:34):
I would assume Shane Stake and Philip Rivers went over
a million reminiscing plays over their days with the Chargers
last night at dinner.
Speaker 3 (01:52:42):
That would be my guess.
Speaker 4 (01:52:44):
Yeah, I mean, I guess what's left to figure out?
You know, he've portally worked out last night, and I
why would he? I find it odd he would come
back just to like do the mentor thing.
Speaker 1 (01:52:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:52:58):
I don't buy that at all.
Speaker 6 (01:52:59):
I'm not gonna pay you to be a mental Are
either coming here to play or you can stay.
Speaker 4 (01:53:02):
It's twenty twenty five work from home, brother, just hop
on the zoom.
Speaker 3 (01:53:06):
What do you think is a good paycheck per game, you and.
Speaker 4 (01:53:09):
Riley Leonard just zoom it up for a couple hours.
I asked this, in all seriousness, what percentage of Riley
Leonard would make the Colts say no, no, no, you
can't play. Philip Rivers is gonna.
Speaker 3 (01:53:20):
Play if he can move.
Speaker 4 (01:53:22):
So you think, as long as Riley Leonard can walk
off the team bus, he's playing.
Speaker 3 (01:53:26):
I think if he can move within the context of
being able to function an NFL game.
Speaker 4 (01:53:30):
Because Riley Leonard has got to really move to be
a good quarterback. That's what he depends on, right that's
his game. Like he can't operate from the pocket right now,
That is not how Riley Leonard is at all. So
you know that to me, I guess is the first
question the Colts have to answer before you even get
into the Philip Rivers. Do you deem Riley Leonard healthy
enough to start an NFL football game against one of
(01:53:51):
the best defenses in the league.
Speaker 5 (01:53:52):
Well, even if you do, you still need a backup options, right,
So we'll still signing a quarterback. Yeah, but you have
to elevate him and have confid that he can get done, which,
according to Shane Styke and yesterday, didn't sound wasn't it
actually a very glowing, you know, endorsement that he was
going to get any reps or anything.
Speaker 3 (01:54:09):
I think part of the problem is get nuts, get
put Philip Rivers out here, let's go honestly part of
the problem. And I'm thinking about what those conversations, not
even just with Philip Rivers, but it's just like Shane
Stike and Chris Ballad when they're sitting in that room,
what are we gonna do? It sounds like they kind
of feel like, yeah, Brett's not gonna help us win.
Speaker 4 (01:54:26):
Well, and look I see those people saying, Hey, this
is embarrassing, blah blah. What's embarrassing is not winning the
AFC South for eleven straight years. What's embarrassing is one
of the longest playoff droughts currently in the NFL. What's
embarrassing to Shane Styke in two and eight against the
Texans and the Jags over the last three years, that's embarrassing.
You're in a dire quarterback situation with three of your
(01:54:47):
four dudes hurt.
Speaker 6 (01:54:49):
All bets are off.
Speaker 4 (01:54:50):
Yeah, I mean, who cares at this point? There's enough
embarrassment for this franchise. Jeff Saturday you know. I mean,
like we can go down the list of it. To
me on the embarrassment scale for the Annapolis Colts, I
maybe I'm numb to it at this point, but it's
not very high on me.
Speaker 3 (01:55:07):
I still wonder is there anything to somebody like a
Russell Wilson who's clearly not going to be a guy
with the Giants any longer? Could he just ask for
his release and see if they might do him a solid?
Speaker 4 (01:55:19):
Yeah? I mean, obviously that's a lot of behind the
scenes stuff and that would have to happen here now
like today, you know, again, today's the off day for
the Colts. Wednesday is their full first big prep day
for Seattle. It's now just a walk through, but still
that quarterback needs to be in the building by sunrise Tomorrow,
(01:55:40):
Thursday and Friday, ye practice.
Speaker 5 (01:55:42):
Where would this fall on the scale of disappointments for
the Colts if they started the season eight and two,
when they end up not only not winning THEFC South,
but they outright and miss the playoffs.
Speaker 6 (01:55:54):
Yeah, I saw this stat from Stephen Holder. So according
to ESPN, if the Colts were to miss the playoff,
they will be the first team since the Bears no
pun intended mark of twenty twelve to start seven to
one and then miss the playoffs. And I believe if
they were to lose out it would tie their longest
losing streak to end the season, which will be seven games,
(01:56:15):
which also happened during the Jet Saturday season. So all
of that in mind, I don't know, man. I part
of me wants to be like, you gotta figure out
a way to win these games in December and January,
but you also have truly been decimated by injuries. I
can't sit up here and say this is the typical
next man up, Nah, huh not when you lose your
(01:56:38):
starting quarterback before as Buckner's been gone, Stars, the Gardner's hurt,
Vera's ward, if will he play football again? Like, these
are serious questions. So that's why I think it's so
nuanced we talk about I know this is your question mark,
but like just kind of pushing it forward the ten
years of Ballard Stike in Jones's future. It's also fluid
(01:56:58):
because I can see so many different you can take
our directions, you can go in because it is truly
not a black and white scenario.
Speaker 3 (01:57:07):
Here's the other thing too, If Philip Rivers does. Let's
say he does sign with the Cults, he does start
at quarterback. You know, Jonathan Taylor's back there. You look
at the Seahawks, there's gonna be a lot of loaded
boxes up there. They're gonna make Philip Rivers prove that
he can even get the ball down Philip for a while,
and there's gonna be seven eight guys waiting for Jonathan
Taylor at that point in time.
Speaker 4 (01:57:27):
Imagine if you just woke up from a night quill hangover.
Speaker 3 (01:57:32):
I was only last week, by the way.
Speaker 4 (01:57:33):
And you're in your car for the first time at
nine to forty and you dialed us up and you
just heard jeff Ricord under the phrase, if Philip Rivers
starts on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (01:57:44):
Well, my uh brother's college roommate who was a diehard
Colts fan. He has been out of the country, so
he just got back and he's responding to text, So
what do you think about this Colt situation? While Philip
Rivers like, are you serious?
Speaker 3 (01:57:55):
Right now?
Speaker 5 (01:57:56):
When I said the screenshots, He's like, he's saying words
I can't say on air, but it was like this
cannot be true, Like, oh, it's it's true, man, it
might be happening, but you.
Speaker 3 (01:58:05):
Did say that we did you you found out that
Sam Ellinger is on the practice squad for Denver. He's
on the Broncos. That's something you'd be comfortable with, Kevin.
Speaker 4 (01:58:16):
I think it's all just we are circling the drain
right now. I want the chaos, weird baby. That's kind
of where I'm at with entertainment standpoint. It would be
a crazy story that's not necessarily honestly for these airwaves.
That's not to make football decisions, but that's where I'm at. Yeah, yeah,
(01:58:36):
I might as well. See you know what I mean,
All these guys are just ask ourselves. Listen, gentlemen, shut up, Kevin,
what would.
Speaker 6 (01:58:45):
Jim Mersey do? I'm actually very curious what would he do?
Speaker 4 (01:58:49):
Would definitely do the Sam Ellnger thing because he loves
I know.
Speaker 6 (01:58:51):
But what I'm saying is it feels like we're in
sort of that all Chips saying on Philip Rivers. I
can only imagine these conversations. Boy, these are the times.
And don't get me wrong, not just the chaotic times,
and good times too. When I was I could call
the man because I would absolutely love to hear his
thoughts on the possibility of signing Philip Rivers. The thing
is because he would believe he would he would gas
(01:59:12):
this thing up.
Speaker 4 (01:59:13):
So far you'll make me pauses Philip Rivers legitimately being hurt,
like it's like an unsafe thing. The man hasn't been
in an NFL game in five years?
Speaker 3 (01:59:23):
What wasn't it?
Speaker 6 (01:59:24):
They're the guy?
Speaker 3 (01:59:24):
Was it?
Speaker 6 (01:59:25):
Frank right now? That says how you say his name.
He tried to sign with the Lions. Yeah, they're old
center and he got there and they were like, no, no, no, no,
your hamstrings falling off the bone.
Speaker 3 (01:59:34):
Yeah, he physical.
Speaker 6 (01:59:36):
So I guess we're at the point now where this
is so old. Has Philip Rivers had a yearly physical
and did he pass it?
Speaker 3 (01:59:44):
You've got kidney stones, my friend.
Speaker 4 (01:59:46):
I think you're yearly physical at forty four. Looks a
lot different than it looked at That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (01:59:53):
From a normal human standpoint, might be a little different
than passing it from a you need to play in
a vo football on Sunday standpoint. We will catch up Kevin.
Speaker 3 (02:00:03):
Everything you need to think about, listen for, and watch
for throughout the rest of your day. It's coming up
next ninety three five and one of seven to five
of the fan suit.
Speaker 6 (02:00:13):
Crap crap, you gosh, that should have been huge tag
go it.
Speaker 3 (02:00:20):
Oh, good morning. Here's something interesting that I have not
thought about for probably a lot of reasons, but we
have a texture tie listening to us from Orlando, Kevin.
He says, if the Colts sign Rivers just ripping, just retire,
I mean that would be such an ego hit. I
can't imagine.
Speaker 4 (02:00:38):
Yeah, if you're Brett ripping you, I'd be like, do
you guys remember that I'm here?
Speaker 6 (02:00:42):
You look at the paper here? Yeah, even the practice
squatchacs are pretty nice and you're not getting hurt exactly.
Speaker 3 (02:00:50):
Man signs Will. Chris wants to know if Jeff Saturday
can play quarterback.
Speaker 4 (02:00:56):
Maybe we should have debated Outam, but Terry is a kicker.
A few weeks ago when we had the Michael Badly
Matt Gay debate, is Adam venitary fifty?
Speaker 1 (02:01:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:01:03):
I think he's like figuess the differences.
Speaker 6 (02:01:05):
Rivers was good as last year. So there's that. You
know what, Let this be a lesson. You can always
go back to your angs. Okay, but I was listening that.
Speaker 4 (02:01:15):
Arm strength was holding on by a thread.
Speaker 6 (02:01:16):
It don't matter.
Speaker 3 (02:01:17):
Maybe I still love you, Ata Minitaria. I looked that
up last week and I just double checked too. He
was fifty three. He's fifty three right now.
Speaker 5 (02:01:25):
That old yeah, britt Ripping will be like like these
boomers won't leave.
Speaker 3 (02:01:30):
Just little won by time.
Speaker 6 (02:01:32):
I feel like this will be a great Brett ripping.
Get the family around years from now and be like,
you know what that one time I was a Philip
Rivers and this is what the quarterback room consisted of,
and the story will be great either way, whether they
had some success or went disastrously.
Speaker 3 (02:01:47):
Well, be listening all day long to us here at
the ninety three five and one on seven by the fan.
We will let you know as soon as we know
what's going on at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, and
whether or not.
Speaker 6 (02:01:57):
I need to call the old man Rivers.
Speaker 3 (02:01:58):
Ends up being quarterback for the Indianapolis Colt Do we
call them old man Rivers.
Speaker 6 (02:02:03):
At that point in time?
Speaker 3 (02:02:04):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (02:02:04):
No, Like I was listening, I'm thinking, Hey, the Colt's
trying to call their ex man, need to call mine.
Speaker 4 (02:02:12):
A good time about the bad times and the guys
are coming around to my Matt gay idea.
Speaker 3 (02:02:18):
Oh you know what, I.
Speaker 6 (02:02:20):
Like, you should get a ding for that. You just
to get a point point for that. Yeah, because that
was that was that was well done.
Speaker 4 (02:02:25):
Hey positive from Sunday Blake Blake Groupy kicking in that weather.
Speaker 3 (02:02:28):
Yeah he did fine. You know what I thought?
Speaker 4 (02:02:30):
They all like look good too.
Speaker 6 (02:02:33):
Shout out to Angela ran from which TV she was
probably the only one of the locker room asking about
the positives of that game. She did interview Blake Blake
Groupie and I was thinking, boy, today is not that day,
my brother. I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (02:02:45):
One other item from Sunday that I am I don't
get how the hell was that ruled?
Speaker 3 (02:02:50):
And interception on.
Speaker 6 (02:02:51):
The rilly There was a.
Speaker 4 (02:02:53):
Couple tie goes to the receiver, right yeah, And then
I thought they.
Speaker 3 (02:02:58):
Could have made a bigger deal about it, just watched
it on TV too, But they kind of they had
dressed a little bit and then they kind of moved on.
Speaker 4 (02:03:05):
Well I mean the game, I mean yeah, and the
game was over.
Speaker 3 (02:03:08):
They're looking for anything at that point in time, but yeah,
they got to play in Seattle on Sunday, and as
of right now, who like, as of right this second,
who would be the starting quarterback?
Speaker 4 (02:03:19):
Well, I think a lot depends on the health of
Raley Leonard. You know, can you evaluate him properly on
a Tuesday? Do you have to see him practice at all?
Speaker 1 (02:03:27):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:03:28):
Again, like telling a role as Chapman to go out
there and pitch without his fastball, you tell Riley Leonard
to go play quarterback without his legs or a hindered
knee injury. The Gaden rapport had it as a PCL sprain.
That's different. Philip Rivers with a knee injury is different
than Riley Leonard with a knee injury. And my thought
(02:03:51):
on Riley Leonard at quarterback is you have to go
all in on the Notre Dame offense from last year,
all in on it. RPO teams to death, run him,
run him and run him some more. Try to get
the extra number in the run game like you have
with Anthony Richardson at times. Try to get toonthan Taylor
going via that route. That would be the blueprint. And
(02:04:12):
if all of a sudden, that's not his game now,
Brett Rippon indoor Philip Rivers, I guess makes some sense.
Speaker 6 (02:04:22):
Yeah, because to your point, Daniel Jones, prior to the
Achilles injury obviously was at least competent as a quarterback
without the legs. Yes, he wanted those, but you were like, hey,
he can still make some plays. Riley, No, that's just
not where his game is at. But I will give
him the credit he was. He looked better than I
thought he would in that game against the Jaguars, especially
on short notice and knowing I think Michael Pitman Jr.
(02:04:45):
Said Yeah, I can kind of my hand how many
first team reps he's got all year.
Speaker 3 (02:04:51):
Earlier of the show, it was a lot of fun
to catch up with the high school football coach for
fernandom and does it Dave done at Christopher Columbus High
School in Miami. That was fun converce station. I don't
think I was surprised by anything he said. Just a
good kid with a great attitude, a work ethic, and
from day one sounds like he was a stud even
(02:05:11):
at Christopher Columbus High School as a sophomore.
Speaker 4 (02:05:14):
Moving on, Yeah, I think some fun stories that IU
fans are even just fans of. For Nana Mendozi, he's
very hard not to root for. I guess unless you're
a new fan. I think you enjoy that. See Mark
clave that on the podcast to Rick Carlisle as well
as we.
Speaker 3 (02:05:29):
Speak with him.
Speaker 4 (02:05:30):
So a couple of coach conversations Banana mendozas high school
coach and Rick Carlisle's the Pacers have one four of.
Speaker 3 (02:05:36):
Six, thank goodness gracious. So yeah, a lot going on.
So the Pacers will be off until Friday, but we
do have college basketball tonight. Indiana has a chance to
get it together against Penn State, double digit favorite at home,
kind of bounce back from that Louisville game. Did you
have a chance to see any that on the road
to Jackson Will you're probably on a plane at that point.
Speaker 6 (02:05:56):
Yeah, I was on a plane, And who knows I'll
be able to watch tonight's again because I might be
working late inuntil the night, depending on what they do
at quarterback. You have like a little workstation over there
with fifty six No, I mean they have, yeah, but
it's only available when we had to going for practice.
My workstation is my couch at home, so we'll get
it done.
Speaker 3 (02:06:13):
I like that. So it's gonna be the day as
we all just kind of are on philip Rivers Watch
with the Indians and the Year of Our Lord twenty
twenty five. The second I said, I wish I could
have I wish there was a camera on your face
when I said, we're on philip Rivers Watch.
Speaker 5 (02:06:28):
It's amazing what three weeks is done to this organization
top of the mountain. And now you're calling retirees to
play quarterback against Seattle.
Speaker 3 (02:06:37):
Hey, honest question, though, Kevin, We've talked about that schedule.
Let's say Riley Leonard is okay and can play even
that does this team win a game again in twenty
twenty five?
Speaker 4 (02:06:51):
Yeah, I think it's a very real question, very real question.
You know again, the Seahawks and forty nine ers are
playing for a lot of potentially number one seed, and
you know we'll see about Jacksonville and Houston to close
out the season. I'm right now, if the playoffs started today, right,
all four of these teams are in it. I believe
who you have for the final four week keep winning
in now. I'll provide an ounce of playoff optimism for
(02:07:14):
you tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (02:07:15):
Oh gonna wait and make his wait for tomorrow. I
like that tease. Twenty it's the twenty one hour.
Speaker 4 (02:07:20):
Teas are we up against it?
Speaker 3 (02:07:22):
We got about minutes ago, were getting right out that.
Speaker 4 (02:07:26):
Chargers loss was crushing, crushing, So the Colts playoff hopes
that'll be mine in the win, So excuse me, the
the Chargers win. Basically, you need to finish with a
better record, and the Chargers have I would say, as
equally as a daunting schedule the end the season as
the Colts.
Speaker 3 (02:07:41):
They're much more equipped to deal with that schedule though, correct.
Speaker 4 (02:07:44):
But again you have the head to head tiebreaker over them.
So if you could have seen them go down last night,
that would have been very very helpful and trying to
create the head to head tiebreaker. And as of now
your eighth they are one of the wildcard teams you're
outside looking in.
Speaker 3 (02:08:00):
We'll keep an eye on it. Like I said, we'll
be listening to Jake Query from noon to three all
day long, see if anything breaks there for the news.
I love, especially to Jake's Breaking news Center. We need
to find one of those and then JMB will break
it all down for you from three to six. It's
all right here all day long at ninety three five
and one oh seven five f
