Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning everyone, and welcome into what we hope will
be day one of whatever quarterback hereon we're about to
enter for the Indianapolis Colts. Good morning, Kevin Bowen, Good morning,
James Boyd, Good morning, Mark Dydon. We are off been running.
There was lots of off field news to talk about
yesterday with the Indianapolis Colts, and we'll get to all
of that, but everyone still wants to know will we
(00:20):
or will we not get a decision on quarterback number
one for the Indianapolis Colts later today when Shane Stiken
meets the media. He's close. Is the last we heard
on Sunday. James.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I think we get a decision today when we walk
in there, and we will certainly have to ask for it.
I think perhaps, But I do think if you made
a decision, you should just come out and say it.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
And I'm trying to think back Kevin of it.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
The last few times they made quarterback decisions, Shane has
usually come right out and made the announcement and then
we'll be able to follow up, so it's not as
something we have to pry out of him. I don't
think it should be that way, mainly because if you
choose a quarterback. You're proud of that decision and make
it public.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Yeah, I should also rack my brain a little bit,
I guess, said Anthony Richardson, maybe be benching or re
entering in the starting lineup. They all run together at
this point, but yeah, eleven fifteen today, Shane Styche will
meet the medium again. The Colts on a regular season
type of schedule this week with both tells.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
By the way, ooh, we gotta tell what the tell
will be.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Remember when they re announced that Anthony was a starter
and the entire room was full of people that are
normally never in there. I think that's usually my tell,
like some big news is coming, because when I walk
in the room and there's you guys, who I love.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
But when I go in there.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
And there's just you know, maybe three or four Colts
cameras that are more present than normal, and a few
other people that I see around the building that are
normally not there for day to day.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
You know, im mediately going to be in the back
of the room.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
No, I think it's Carly, but a few other people
that we know around the building, Kevin, you know what
I'm talking about. When they show up, I'm like, Okay,
this must be a little bit different.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Granted we haven't been in that building in quite a
while for a media availability. So again, regular season type
of schedule for the Coltal practice today, tomorrow and Thursday.
We still get to watch practice, but no longer the
full on training camp mode. I think, you know, Okay,
why would he do it today? You know, like if
we want to get into that forklack convenience again, there
(02:18):
is like, what do you mean? I do think there
is a regular season element of this week, and so
there's a little bit of a hey, if we're going
to dress rehearsal it up, we owe it to our
team to have them know, Hey, when we come out
here for three straight days of practice, like the regular season,
this is going to be your starting quarterback. Next week,
you'll transition to Miami specific prep. So I think that's
(02:38):
a little bit behind the why of it potentially happening
here later this morning.
Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, and to your point to going a little bit further,
you name a starting quarterback today and with the first
kind of you start to get into the regular week
work week for the Colts over there, somebody starts to
get a lot more reps as a starting quarterback too,
And that's one thing I think would be important to
a head coach at this point in time. I'd like
to have one preseason week of real prep for QB
(03:05):
one to kind of get going into the season.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
James, especially if I mean they'll have the other week
off in between the finale of the preseason and the
regular season opener. However, to your point, Jffka, I think
you do want to kind of shift the mindset of
the team and say, here's our guy, here's who we're
rolling with, and here is why we believe in this person.
And so I do expect to do a little bit
of work today. And you know, as the professional I am, Kevin,
(03:31):
I think you are the same.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Ilk. You probably have both stories written because that's what
I have.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
It's a little.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Sneak peek there for those behind the scenes. I used
to always wonder, when I was not a reporter like man,
how they get that story out so fast after this
person got fired or died or you know, quarterback decisions.
And now I know you just do double the work.
So yesterday I spent a little time prepping a couple
of different angles.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
There waiting for the old publish right there you go,
that's what.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
So what time is Strane meeting to be leave?
Speaker 4 (04:00):
I probably need to double check that, but yes, that
will happen later today.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
All right, we'll look forward to that. As many times
as I refreshed as much social media and news as
I could. Did we get any clarity on Sophie Cunningham yesterday?
I don't.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
People were off, I believe yesterday and I thought they
might say something. I think they're off again today. Yeah,
they have come out with press releases. I think the
Sydney Colson and r. A. McDonald's situation, they did come
out with results. I don't know. No news is good news.
Maybe I'm you know, grasping at something right there. But honestly,
we've had these two questions for a while now. Who
(04:37):
will be the cold starting quarterback in twenty twenty five
and when will Caitlin Clark get back? And we could
emphasis on could get answers to those two questions potentially
in the next two days Richardson. Of course, Jones, you
know that could play out today. Fever get back to
practice tomorrow. As we talked to Tony East yesterday about it,
(04:57):
could that be a return date or at least more
clarity on the Caitlin Clark timetable, as the regular season
is three weeks away from ending here, so uh again,
not her shattering news I think on the Caitlin Clark
front by any means coming tomorrow. But you know, a
return to practice is obviously a huge step forward in
her playing basketball again this season.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Well, we certainly want to see her as soon as possibly,
certainly hope that Sweppy Cunningham is going to be okay.
And you know, Stephanie White has been opening up about
just the resiliency of this group and no matter what
seems to happen. And yeah, she talks to Jake, So
every Tuesday, right, that's my that's my understanding. That's what
I've heard so far every Tuesday. So when I say
(05:40):
that's what I've heard, I've heard it on the air
and that's what Jake has But as you know, coaches,
they have their own schedule sometimes, so she's graciously agreed
to talk to Jake every week, much like Rick talks
to this show every week. So appreciate all that over there, Mark,
how the Cobs do yesterday?
Speaker 5 (05:56):
Well thanks for just smacking in the side of the head. Well,
Bringhich I'm shocked the Cubs haven't scored a run. It's
not like that offense hasn't looked like complete ass for
like four weeks now, So seven nothing shot. There's supposed
to be a game last night, and then then what
bad weather hits. So they're playing a doubleheader today and
I'm gonna say over under five runs total for the
(06:16):
Cubs in two games. I would take the under at
this point because that offense is broken.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
Shame the mother nature reador ugly had. I really thought
their bats were going to click late.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
I know, I'm shocked as you are.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I'm sure they were ready to turn it all around.
They might today, you never know.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
Well, you gotta love seeing that Kyle Tucker is going
to get some days off because he's been struggling so bad.
He hasn't had an extra base hitting over a month.
So the guy who's hoping to get like a six
hundred million dollar deal is uh, you know, getting a
couple of rest days against the toughest team in the division.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Anybody pay attention to Monday Night Football last night with
the Bengals and Commanders.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
I did a little bit.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
I thought there were some moments where Joe Burrow was
doing a little bit too much of the Joe Burrow thing.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
It's like, just go down and don't kill yourself or
get killed.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
In the preseason looked great through you know, throwing the
ball looks awful, which is not a surprise to me
at all. But getting back to the Coats for a
mint a bit, we did have some pretty significant news.
I guess you can look at it from positive in
a negative angle. They signed cornerback Zavin Howard to assist
with the cornerback room, which probably means that, you know,
adding a two time All Pro and a four time
(07:19):
Pro bowler. By the way, he hasn't played since twenty
twenty three, but adding him to that room probably means
that Jaylen Jones and or Juju Brents is going to
remain out for a while. And it sounds like Kevin
when we're talking Tolu Anarumo, who was his old position
coach down in Miami, that this guy they took him
to play at some point and to contribute at some point.
So that was significant. And then the ir news for
(07:40):
Blake Freeland officially with the fractured leg, and then Hunter
Wohler the foot injury from what I understand per sources,
was a list Franket.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
That's interesting.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Yeah, hoping I'm saying it correctly, but yeah, he's going
to be out for the rest of the year. And
I did have to get clarity on that because for
those listening, the rules have changed a little bit for
the NFL. Were now you can designate two players that
go on IR to return for the season at some point.
So when you hear IR before the season officially starts.
In the past, it meant they were out for the year,
(08:11):
no matter what. Now I always have to kind of
reach out behind the scenes and see, okay, is this
someone you could designate to return, similar to how they
did with Sampson, Eblecombli last year, Kevin and maybe somebody else.
But yeah, I got confirmation that Hunter Roler Blake Friedland
are both done for the year.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Tough breaks.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Literally, that's two rookies. I'm from the strip.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Yeah, Wally as well.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
Yeah, and you know, obviously Woler was having a really
strong camp. I was curious what exactly his Day one
role would be. I think definitely special teams, potentially involved
in some sub packages. And you know, we talked about
the injury lists yesterday. Roster cuts are a week from today.
I think I rattled off like fourteen to fifteen names yesterday.
These are two of them, Blake Friedland and Hunter Woller
(08:54):
that we mentioned yesterday. So yeah, yeah, clarity. It sounds
like you're just sweeping the under the rod, which is unfair.
But now I guess you shift to the other dozen
or so names. And when they get back to practice today,
do any of these guys that have missed recent time?
Are any of them back to work? So yeah, awful
news obviously there On Wooler, you know, you can make
(09:16):
the argument that him and Wally were probably two of
the non Tyler Warren rookies that were impressing the most
out of any of those draft picks here. And you know,
the Howard news obviously is a headliner. I still can
vividly remember two of the more impressive interceptions I've seen
him actually make against Andrew Luck back in that twenty
eighteen game, where it looked like he was the wide
(09:37):
receiver on that play. But it's been a long time,
and thirty two year old corners do not really grow
on trees nowhere do they play seventeen games. So I
am fascinated to see how this one is going to
play out, because, as James said, Leu an Rumo sounded
like a guy that's ready to play, exaving Howard's seventeen games.
He did not sound like a guy that needs to
see any sort of Hey, well eas them along or
(10:00):
we'll see where he's at. No, I think if you're
gonna make this signing, you believe A, you believe Jalen
Jones and Juju Brent are probably gonna miss time, and
then B you think he is also an upgrade. And
you know we've had I think this general conversation ever
since the Ana Rumo arrival. But to me, it's another
reminder of it's time to start slotting defensive guys into
(10:25):
who are Gus Bradley guys and who are Lui Anarumo guys?
Because you're already starting to see some of that play out.
Let's go to linebacker, for example, Jalen Carlis is not
a lu an Arumo guy. Joe Bachi is a lou
and a Remo guy. And I think even before the
Carla's ankle injury, you were starting to see Joe Bacci
(10:45):
take more and more of those reps go back to corner. Yes,
injuries have contributed to it, but clearly he has strong
history with Howard, and even though that history dates back
almost a decade ago, at this point, he wants to
take a chance on that. So boy, the Colts have
to have the oldest starting trio of corners in the
entire NFL and Javerius Ward, Kenny Moore and Examon Howard.
(11:07):
So we'll see how all that plays out.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
We'll check all of that throughout the rest of the day.
Check down coming up in just a moment as we
continue to set the day for you, and a lot
ahead as we get rolling on a Tuesday morning, hopefully
a lot of information coming our way throughout the course
of the day. We'll set you up for it. Next
on ninety three five and one o seven.
Speaker 6 (11:26):
Hello the morning.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
Checkdown On ninety sweet five and one oh seven five
the fan.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Good morning and thanks for joining us. How are you
maybe listening this morning? Along with James Boyd and Kevin Bowen,
I'm Jeff Rickard Mark Dyke. Then over there on the
ones and twos, gentlemen, we start with the Indianapolis Colts
and before we get to yesterday's transactions, Kevin Bowen. Do
we get a starting quarterback from Shane Steichen a little
bit later on this morning?
Speaker 4 (11:51):
White smoke from Eagle Creek? Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 1 (11:53):
I'm looking for it?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Maybe Boatyard, not just the grill over there.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
I do love Rick.
Speaker 1 (11:58):
Maybe we'll just go hang out Rix and look for it.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
That wouldn't be a bad little lunch out of there.
Shane Stike wonna beat the media later, so we will
see if that is going to happen again. Kind of
a regular season schedule for the Colts this week, three
straight practices back at their own facility. And if you're
going to treat it like a regular season, and yes,
you're gonna have consistent starting reps to one guy, then
potentially that starter could be announced. So we will wait
(12:23):
and see. It doesn't sound like starters will play on Saturday.
Still waiting confirmation on that, but I got the vibe
that that is not going to be the case. Hell,
the Bengals played last night. Talk about a quick turnaround
for them.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah, we'll get to the Bengals in the second here.
But other things that Shane Steaking may take about today.
James Boyd, they've signed cornerback Xavian Howard, and they've also
put a couple of guys Blake Freeland, Jacob Phillips the linebacker,
and safety Hunter Woller on the injured reserve.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Yeah, tough development on those fronts. I believe for Jacob
Phillips was a biceps injury. Frontal Woler, it was a
List Frank injury, which basically a mid foot spra or
kind of like this fractures. It's a unique injury. Dwight
Freeney actually had it, and to give you all some
positivity there, he came back the following year, had a
Pro Bowl season, and then made four straight Pro Bowls
(13:11):
after that, so he was good to go. But yeah,
it is a long recovery. And then obviously for Blake Freeland,
we saw the injury there with the broken leg in
the game. So just a tough situation for those guys.
But Xavin Howard, you know, thirty two years old, did
not play in the NFL last year.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Last played for the Dolphin in twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
But he's got four Pro Bowls to his name, two
All Pro selections, and he led the league interceptions two years.
I think it was twenty eighteen with seven and twenty
twenty with ten. We told him my homework yesterday and
so I'm excited to see what he can bring to
this team from that standpoint, all.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
Right, that Colt Procrusser should happen around eleven o'clock or so.
We'll keep you up to date all day long here
on the fan on anything that happens there. Meanwhile, NFL
last night preseason game, Monday Night Football, Joe Burrow looking
in regular season fourm he directed two score drives as
the Bengals beat the Commanders thirty one to seventeen. He
had a touchdown pass and again nine to fourteen sixty
(14:06):
two yards. And as you said earlier, Joe Burrow doing
Joe Burrow things. Maybe you don't want to see that
necessarily in the regular season.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
No, not at all. I think all of Cincinnati was
saying get down on a couple of those plays. But man,
he is one of the best players in the world.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
What a player. The throw that he.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
Made, I forget who the guy was, but the tight
window throw across the middle in the back of the
end zone of.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
Charlie Jones, a Purdue guy.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Yeah, and I thought that throw was when you see
a dude, and I think obviously Colts fans and we'll
have Zach Keith Fro talk about it a little bit later,
but I think when you see throws like that, Colts
fans are reminded of how it was of Andrew Luck
and how it was a Peyton manning. When you have
a dude who could just make every single throw, and
Joe Burrow is a guy who gives you a chance
even with the Putrio defense, that guy is special man.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Also for the Cincinnati Bengals, it's looking more and more
likely that they might trade defensive end Trey Hendricks and
then something that to me even four days ago, seemed
like they're going to figure it out James looks like
maybe inevitable. Now, I don't know, what do you think.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
I think they're liars if you were going to trade,
and you should have did it before the draft, and
they're asking price. According to at least at the Athletic
Diana Russini, who's our top insider, you know, it's a
first round pick and another player, and you know, so
I don't know how many teams are willing to give
up a first round pick for him at this point.
You know this is a guy who I believe might
be thirty or is going to turn thirty very soon.
(15:29):
And in my opinion, for the coltsest purposes, they're not
going to make this trade because you cannot give up
your twenty twenty six first round pick because you don't
know who your quarterback is going to be in twenty
twenty six. Now, if you get an answer on that
and you were sure fire, hey we got our quarterback
of the future, that would be great, but they are
non positioned in my opinion, to make that move.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Also, Kevin Bond, if you were going to one O,
seven to five thefan dot com terrific, look at what
you're thinking for the fifty three man roster coming up here.
I thought that was fun to go through yesterday.
Speaker 4 (15:57):
One week from today. Yes, again, it's just one giant
cut ninety to fifty three. In years past we've had
a variety of ninety to eighty, eighty to seventy five.
But yeah, it's just one big one the NFL has
done here over the last couple of years. So three practices,
a Saturday preseason game, final chance, and like we talked
about yesterday, injuries are going to play a huge, huge, factor,
(16:21):
and I think we could see several different iterations of
the fifty three men roster leading into the season officially starting.
So that is part of what this time of year
is all about around the NFL. So big week for
a lot of guys in the back end of the roster.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
All right. Check Major League Baseball. The Cincinnati Red Legs
have won a couple of games in a row. They
beat the Los Angeles Angels four to one last night.
Gavin Lux had a two run home run. They got
a couple of sackflies to score the other ones. They're
getting on their role now.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
I always love in the West Coast games when your
team scores early and you feel like you can go
to bed in a peaceful mood.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
Was too nothing good for you?
Speaker 4 (16:57):
Well, it was better than the alternative then, and then
I went over and it was time for me to
pee three times during the night. P Number one I
looked at and I was like, oh, four to one,
that was pretty efficient. Good work, Brady Singer.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
That worked out well. Milwaukee Brewers seven nothing over the Cubs.
We talked about that a little earlier. Anything more needs
to be said other.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Than I love how you greeted Mark with that. Second
thing said to Mark during the whole day was, hey, Mark, the.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Clubs, you're feeling bad for the guy that plays you
to death with sound regarding the Cincinnati Reds and you're
feeling bad for him. Now now that works.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
No, I thought it was excellent by you.
Speaker 5 (17:32):
I'm remembering all these things.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Jeffs finest work.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
It's Milwaukee Brewers over the Cubs seven to nothing. Said
it all right, I don't have to repeat it.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
You said it.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Can I finish the sentence?
Speaker 6 (17:41):
No?
Speaker 1 (17:42):
Please, No, we'll move on. The second game of the
heater was rained out. Mark can't wait for that to
be a rescheduled doubleheader for today?
Speaker 8 (17:48):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (17:48):
Yeah, I can't wait. I'm locked in.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
He's in mid season Cubs for him. Also, yesterday, the
White Sox just beaten up on the Atlanta Braves by
a score of thirteen to nine. The Saint Louis Cardinals
yesterday got an eight three win over the Miami Marlin
so Later on tonight, the Indians back in action on
the road. They'll play the Syracuse Mets at six thirty five.
(18:12):
Anything else you guys want to throw another than No
real update on the knee injury to Sophie Cunningham and
the fever.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
I do want to mention that for the Xavin Howard signing,
there is some off the field stuff that he's done
or allegedly done.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
We'll get into it that we certainly have to address.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
And I think that, you know, I actually have a
statement I can read after the break from Chris Ballard
on the signing. But yeah, it wasn't just necessarily something
you can look at from a football standpoint.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
You look at the other stuff as well.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Is that why you didn't play last year?
Speaker 1 (18:42):
I think he was. I think that injured as well.
He was hurt.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
I think he had a foot injury.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Might have been Liz Frank actually from what I was reading,
but I do wonder if that was antributing factor at all.
Some of the stuff that he did off the court
that you know, ended up Indian court records.
Speaker 4 (18:56):
The only other thing I was going to add was
I see Indiana's really bolster their non conference schedule.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
For you see that. I did see that, like what
I saw. If you're Indiana, do you even announce that
or is that just something to somebody.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
I don't know if they announced it yet, but I
saw a report that they have added the Fighting Antoine
Bethets Howard to the schedule coming up for next year.
Today'sbcus So the Bison, Yes, I believe it is the Bison, Jamie,
and I like a good Bison burger miam Ohio. Shout
out to Kristen Cramp. Shout out to the Fighting RedHawks
there in a couple of years. So Indiana remains the
(19:28):
only Power for team with a non conference schedule that
has zero Power four teams on it over the next
I believe it's five five.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Years one up. Yeah, no conference or no non conference
road games till twenty thirty.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
Yeah, And I don't have as big of an issue
with that, the fact that you're unwilling to play anybody
of notice probably where or My issue is, boy, this
this Mendoza kid. Though, down there people are insanely high
on it.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
They liked Timmy Kim from Cal, right right, good things
about him at Cal.
Speaker 4 (20:01):
Like sleeper Heisman Trophy, first round pick type of deal. So, yeah,
Curtis Rourke, see you later, according to a lot of
these people down there. So we'll see behind a better
offensive line than he had over at Cal. Obviously scheduled
a little tougher, but people are extremely intrigued by for
Nano Mendoza.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
All right, looking forward to, uh seeing how that all develops.
In the meantime, we'll talk more colts and get us
some stuff that James Boyd teased and talked about there
in a moment as we continue, and we'll check a
first check of the fan text line too at two
nine seventy. It's all coming your way as we continue
at ninety three five and one seven. Good morning, Happy Tuesday.
Welcome into the Fan Morning Show, KBJB, Jeff Fan, Mark Daichdon.
(20:45):
I guess we'd call you doctor, right MD? Anybody ever
for that?
Speaker 5 (20:48):
He'd like to sure there's no degree on my door.
You want some medical advice.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Though, doctor of nonsense?
Speaker 5 (20:55):
I like that, say put some dirt on it, get
back out there.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (20:59):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Text is open two three ninety ten seventy and the
fan text line. Mark got in early this morning and Kevin,
he said, regardless of who's name the starting quarterback, by
week three or four, everyone's gonna want the other guy
with the starter when it turns out to be, uh,
not so great. That's how it's always been, just his
two cents, probably not the all but off the mark,
I would imagine.
Speaker 4 (21:19):
Better chance the Colts make the AFC title game or
the week one starter starts all seventeen games for the Colts.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
The latter, Yeah, I think this is the latter.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
You're saying no chance is what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Yeah, they have no chance to make the AFC Championship.
So I will go with like little to no chance
over zero chance. You're positive this so if you're able
to win, they ask, no, no, no, we're not doing that. Nah,
I'm not nothing to a positive. Have you seen those quarterbacks?
If you're able to win they have you seen this team?
They made the playoffs in four you also think they
(22:00):
go to AFC Championship? No zero chance?
Speaker 4 (22:03):
How many starters you even started all seventeen games last
year in the NFL? Do you think half? Well?
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Yeah, it was though it was a unique year. A
lot of guys got dinged up and missed some time.
Speaker 8 (22:14):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (22:15):
You would probably go with the AFC title game, right?
Or would you go with the ladder there you think?
I think the Jones or Anthony Richardson will start each
and every football game the Colts play this season.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
I think there's zero chance that happens, which is why,
given the choice of those two, I'd probably take the
AFC Championship game. But again to James point, I'm just reversing,
and there's little to no chance of one and zero chances.
Just got to win two playoff games, right, Oh yeah,
that's all you gotta do.
Speaker 4 (22:41):
How long has that been?
Speaker 5 (22:42):
It's the getting to the playoffs that's been the issue.
Speaker 4 (22:44):
Coach, Well, you're in the AFC South. Isn't that a
gift that keeps on giving?
Speaker 5 (22:47):
Not for the rock I Sweiler?
Speaker 9 (22:51):
Maybe?
Speaker 10 (22:52):
And if C. J.
Speaker 4 (22:53):
Stroud gets hurt Davis Mills time, baby.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
M Davis Mills, does that mean we're going to be
a Bean at quarterback at some point this year? Maybe?
Speaker 4 (23:03):
I do not think Jason Dean will get understanded.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
I'm gonna look and see what like if you put
if you picked the Colts to represent the AFC in
the in the championship game, like, what what odds are
we looking at here?
Speaker 1 (23:15):
But go ahead, I bet it's somewhere around. I'm going
to say probably like twe plus twelve hundred, fourteen hundred
something like that.
Speaker 5 (23:21):
It'd be ten million, might be higher than that.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
We were talking about the fact that during the checkdown
a moment ago, James Boyd that Zavian Howard has been
signed by Chris Ballard. And not only do you have
an injury of sorts last year, he's thirty two years old,
but he also had a lot of off the field
stuff to deal with, including the fact that he sent
a picture of a very graphic nature of him and
a woman to the woman's son because he was in
(23:45):
a dispute with the woman. He sent that picture to
the woman's teenage son of he and the woman in
a very interesting situation.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Let's put Yeah, this is all allegedly according to court documents.
And now the I guess the update there is that
the Sun has This is according to earlier this year
in February of court filing. And I'll just read what's
in our story, my story the void quote voluntarily dismissed
with prejudice the claims he has heard against Howard, so
(24:17):
mean dismissed with the prejudice means it can't come back
to court and he can't be tried for that again.
But the plaintiff's lawsuit is still pending, so I believe
this isn't resolved fully just yet. But it's certainly something, right,
I'm sorry, what so.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
It's reports of that happening at this point, right.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Well, it's all in court documents, so I think it's
I guess it's more valid than a report like this
is all in you know, the public domain, and he
had to go to court for it, or had to
you know, be a.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
To a certain degree. They had to go through a
lawsuit because of it.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
So anyways, Yeah, I reached out to the Colts because
I was like, this is going to go in my story.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
It has to go in the story. And here's what
Chris Ballard said.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
And keep in mind as to someone who said, you know,
they try to keep people with high character and you know,
obviously they want them to be good members of the
community and society. And he said, we understand the discussion
regarding Xavian. We've done our research on this situation. We
talked thoroughly with him. We expect Xaviing to be professional
on and off the field. He understands the opportunity he
has here. A significant part of this signing is trust,
(25:22):
and we expect him to build on and honor that trust.
So that is the latest on that. There are some
other stuff in his past as well. I want it
to get into those things because both of those cases
were actually dismissed. But nevertheless, it is certainly something to
you know, ask about, and I think, you know, regardless
of what happens with the quarterback situation, at some point
(25:43):
it is still worth asking Shane Steichen or asking Xavion
Howard himself, like what is the latest and you know,
what can you really say about this matter?
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Yeah, I file that one under the file of there's
some guys and whether it's the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, hockey, whatever,
there are always just some guys that there's just always
something going on. It seems like there's every year or
every year and a half, there's something bubbling up. There's
something going on that's just doesn't need to be there,
(26:13):
and even though they don't, maybe those things get dismissed
or whatever happens to him. It just feels like there
are guys that put themselves continually in situations that are
not the most ideal of situations.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Yeah, he does seem like one that's popped up on
the old ESPN ticker quite a bit here over the
last couple of years. You know, it sounded like judging
by what Louis an Rumo said yesterday. Again for those
that are unfamiliar with Howard's full background, he began with
the Dolphins, that is where loui Ana Rumo was prior
to Cincinnati. So you know, Howard has been in the
league for so long that his first two years in
(26:45):
the league, loui An Rumo was his position coach there
in Miami. You really flourished, you know, probably kind of
right at the end of and Rumo's time there especially,
you know, right around twenty nineteen twenty twenty. But like
it is, you know, this would be quite the resurrection project,
exaving Howard coming here and being whatever a top flight
(27:06):
corner for you. I mean, when James rattled off some
of those stats a little bit earlier of his interceptions
and his all pro.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
Nature twenty twenty l leading the interceptions, how long ago was.
Speaker 4 (27:15):
That and in corner years, that's like dog USh, Yeah,
you know it's the Colts are really banking on something
I'd say rather unprecedented when you look at their three corners,
assuming xaving Howard's going to be one of the starters.
I mean him and Kenny Moore and Shavarious Ward. They
all have nearly one hundred starts in the league. That's
a lot. And you know, I think last year in
(27:35):
the league you only had one corner age thirty or
older start every game. That was Jalen Ramsey. So you know,
I don't want to act like maybe it's like a
running back where you get to like twenty eight twenty nine,
the red flag starts to get waived, But it's kind
of like that at corner. And again, Xavier Howard didn't
play in the league last year. Now, lou Anerimo kind
of flipped that on the other side of saying, well,
you know, that means he's, you know, maybe could have
(27:57):
some fresh legs. So we'll see. They worked in out.
They clearly were good with it. But James Boyd judging.
But by what lou An Arumo said yesterday, I don't
see this as a Hey, we'll see where he's at
and maybe he'll make the team Next Tuesday. I got
the impression that when they play the Miami Dolphins, his
old team, ironically, two weeks from Sunday, Xamy Howard's going
(28:18):
to be playing a lot of snaps.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
Yeah, I honestly think that he could be in the
running to start that game, considering the injury they've had
to that secondary and assuming Kennymore is able to come back,
I would think he's in a slot various wards on
the other outside spot, and those are your three cornerbacks.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
Yep. Talk to me about the injuries to the other
two guys at this point in time. Are we talking
about lengthy absences? Are we talking? What are we talking about?
Speaker 10 (28:39):
There?
Speaker 6 (28:39):
Do we know?
Speaker 2 (28:40):
No, we don't know. I mean, I can give it
to you straight as this, Jeff. It's been a lengthy
absence for Juju Brinston, Jalen Jones because they just haven't played,
and I don't know, Kevin has been at least two
or three weeks.
Speaker 4 (28:51):
Is no longer three at this point? Probably?
Speaker 3 (28:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
So from that standpoint, that is my own official update
or unofficial update. But as far as the coaching staff, no,
we haven't heard anything from Shane Styken beyond their progressing
and that's all he's really offered.
Speaker 3 (29:05):
And honestly, that's usually the case with Shane.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
I mean, I don't know if that's a and I
guess most coaches kind of stay away from the medical
updates and things like that. But he's one who he
offers very little to be honest with you, and so yeah,
I will ask again today, perhaps, you know, assuming I'll
be honest with those listening. If there's a quarterback decision today,
every question for the twenty minutes that Shane Stychen is
(29:30):
up there will be about the quarterbacks, and then everything
else will be put on the back burner until later.
But I believe at some point this week we'll be
able to follow up and ask about some of these
injuries and see where guys are, because it is getting
a bit to that point where you wonder, Okay, where's
Jalen Jones and his recovery, where's Juju Brentson his recovery?
And can these guys be available come week one or
be close to being available come week one?
Speaker 4 (29:50):
Yeah, for example we talked about earlier, I posted a
fifty three man roster projection up on our website again,
roster cuts a week from today. I kept seven corners.
There's no way I've ever done this exercise before and
kept seven cornerbacks. But I kept seven because of injury insurance,
Jones and Brents being two of the guys that you
would think about with that so again clarity the Colts. Internally,
(30:14):
they're gonna need some clarity on some of these injured guys.
And again, when we're out at practice today, do any
of these guys get back to work. Nick Cross has
missed about a week plus, Quitty pay has missed a
week plus. Jalen Carlis was in a boot last week
during the joint practice of the Packers. You know, Josh
Downs's hamstring, Alec Pierce's groin. You only get seven in
(30:36):
actives on game day, so some of these do start
to add up for you. So again, as James pointed out,
I thought, pretty well right there. You know, yes, the
quarterback conversation will certainly dominate many of the new cycle today,
but internally the Colts will have some injury questions to
deal with with the old roster mechanics when it comes
(30:56):
to cutting down a rosters of fifty three players.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
It's the Fan Morning Show and I one seventy five
of the fan. We'll go to the fan text line
right now at two three, nine ten seventy, AJ says,
talking about Chris Ballard, this is the guy that would
brag endlessly on his amazing locker room. My point being
guys like Howard are just fine for Ballard. Uh. He
was not impressed with Ballard's response. He also says, thank
you for reporting on this, And there are a lot
(31:20):
of guys that'll hold general managers to them saying, hey,
we want high carrick nothing but high character guys coming
in here all the time.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
Yeah, I mean, I think a lot of them preached that.
I think, you know, Ballard tries to carry that out
to a degree. But I'm not somebody who's gonna see
here and be like this idealist where I expect every
team to sign nothing but guys who are on the
up and up or don't have a past. And I
have to understand or at least try to respect the
(31:47):
fact that they probably have more information on this on
the matter than I do. But at the end of
the day, this is the NFL, and in professional sports,
we've seen at time and time again, if you can
play or if some things you can play, whatever you've
done in the past and gets put in the back burner.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
And that's just the reality of the business. In my opinion.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Yeah, I think the Colts losing on Sundays are far
more frustrating the Colts fans and then losing community Tuesdays.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Yeah, ah, this is very true. This is uh from
Adam in Wykestown. Let's be honest, we all want Tyler
Warren to be the starting quarterback.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
A former high school quarterback. Correct, Yeah, he can do anything.
I threw some lefty pass. Let's put it on this
guy at Penn State. I say, Tyler Warren will throw.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Pass this here, that would be outstanding.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Yeah, I honestly think it would be funny if he
threw the first passing of the year. Did you imagine
red zone red zone five yards in they drew, they
do the old t bow where it's like, yeah, the
jump past.
Speaker 3 (32:38):
That would be pretty hilarious if you did that.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
But what I'm saying, it's not very healthy that I'm
peeing multiple times during the night. Should I be worried
about that? Somebody will give me some prostate advice, which
thank you for that.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
Starting to get a little.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Talk yesterday, not prostate, starting about you.
Speaker 4 (32:52):
Oh, had an update on the quarter potty.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Yeah, what do we get?
Speaker 4 (32:55):
Thank you to listener Mike for reaching out here. Mike
said that, Uh, I want to make sure I get
this exactly correct. I don't want to misconstrue any words. Here,
he goes, I get the reason for you going into
the porter potty for the sunglasses. When I went to
ball State, I was in a bar called the Chug,
very very legendary spot there in Muncie, I must add,
(33:16):
Mike says, I chewed at the time. I dropped my
chew can in the toilet, snatched it right out.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
Oh God, no, thank you?
Speaker 4 (33:29):
So how about that Mike and I porter potty snatching
brothers here and a little long cut grizz that Mike
found the need to dive in there for. Can you
imagine I was chew correct? Can you imagine what the
Chug toilet probably looked like?
Speaker 5 (33:48):
I can't imagine the flavor changed.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
Much, man, Mike? What happens in Munsi?
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Stays?
Speaker 3 (33:54):
And yeah, God bless you, Mike.
Speaker 1 (33:55):
A lot of people starting to offer up prostate correct.
Speaker 4 (33:59):
Yes, so needs a doctor. When you have got the
text line, the lit' is an audience that we have
out here.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
Let's go get hims two through nine, ten seventy. We'll
check the text line throughout the show and we'll read
some of them back as we get going. As far
as quarterback is concerned, we're thinking about little over three
hours from now, maybe we find out who quarterback one
is going into the start of the twenty twenty five season.
Last night on ESPN, Dan Orlovski was asked about that
(34:27):
quarterback battle and who he thinks the quarterback one should
be between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Speaker 8 (34:35):
I would lean Anthony Richardson just because he has to play.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
And you took him forth.
Speaker 8 (34:39):
The challenge for the Colts are is one who do
you trust at that position the most? And then too,
which quarterback do you truly believe can get all.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Of your playmakers to football.
Speaker 8 (34:49):
Tyler Warren, their first round dropt pick, needs touches, really
good player, Michael Pittman Junior needs to get the ball
in his hands. They've got a ton of talented perimeter players.
Josh Downs is going to become one of the better
slot receivers in the NFL. A d Mitchell, another big
time playmaker Alec Pearson. So the quarterback isn't necessarily the
guy that.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
Has to put on this cape and carry this offense.
Speaker 8 (35:12):
There's a ton of really talented players on the printer
and so if you're Shane Steiken, their head coach, It's like,
what quarterback do you trust not only to just run
your offense, but to just play point guard? And that
makes me lean Daniel Jones. My reservation is this, if
you go Daniel Jones, are you then saying Anthony Richardson
is done because you're going with Daniel Jones to sit
(35:33):
there and go win is football games. And if that's
the case and he does that, Anthony Richardson once again
does not get on the field and get reps, which
is the number one thing he needs. So I think
it's a very difficult situation because you're choosing the now
or you're choosing the future, and both of them are separate.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
That is one interesting facet of all this. Maybe Shane
Stikeen just wants a guy that he can depend on,
just his playmakers the ball. Give the ball to Josh
Downs in the slot. Give the ball to jt. Make
that throw to Tyler Warren. Make sure that Michael Pittman
when he posts up for a third and seven gets
to the to the sticks, the ball is delivered correctly
(36:16):
and on time. That might be a bigger decision than
we think.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
Yeah, certainly, and honestly I feel like I appreciate uh
danren Rolofski's inside. Obviously he's a former NFL quarterback, but
he ain't stating something that isn't the obvious.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
You got to give him the ball.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
And the question is for Anthony, like it always has been,
is can you make enough of the regular throws to
justify putting you out there because we know you can
make all the other spectacular throws. And then for Daniel Jones, it's,
you know, is the floor is you not rocking the
boat more valuable than perhaps having the explosive you know
(36:52):
thunder plays that kind of flipped the field. And so
I think a lot of that conversation is what Shane
Steichen has to go back and forth was in his
mind Kevin and really whatever decision he makes, I'm very
curious to know what he says to the other guy
in that moment. I would imagine it's those three at
some point, you know, just man the man you probably
(37:12):
wanted to sit down and say, hey, face to face,
here's who I'm going with. But what is that conversation
like adjacent to the quarterback who you choose as a starter,
are you telling him to stay ready? Are you telling
him it's not the end, like what's that balance like
when you pick a guy? But we all know this
isn't necessarily a QB competition that is over as soon
(37:34):
as they announce who the starter is for week one.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Yeah, I mean all you guys laughed when I said
the chance on one of these guys plays seventeen games
or starts to all seventeen games.
Speaker 3 (37:42):
No, but the situation you put me in was also
the AFC champion.
Speaker 2 (37:47):
If you told me NFC Championship, I could kind of
see it. Look at this is a I'm a Bears
fan at least when I was a kid and I
saw Rex Grossman, you know, get to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
So yeah, I know, I know it was painful. I
thought it was yesty when Devon has to run it
back and then Peyton Manny kind of woke up a
little bit there.
Speaker 4 (38:03):
But you go back to our Lobsky's comments right there
at the start, he really lays out the two questions.
So let's boil it down to those two questions. In
Shane Stikeen's world, should we start Anthony Richardson because he
was the fourth overall pick, or should I pick my
starting quarterback on who I trust more, Which question do
(38:23):
you think matters more to Shane stykeen the ladder, It
has to be the latter. If you're the coach, you know,
so my homes right now are open right now. Like
if that is the answer, or that's the question, I
should say, James, then the trust factor is probably with
(38:44):
Daniel Jones more than Anthony Richardson, is it not.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
But again I agree, the logsical part of my brain
says you're right. But the other part getting back to
the fact that you do have this high draft pick
that was homegrown and you've tried to develop and if
there really hasn't been any difference between them in camp,
why would you not go with the guy that you've developed.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
That's kind of where I'm at too. It's not like
I've read a tweet I want to say it's one
of me yesterday. It's like, no one has benefitted more
from not playing football a lot over the last year
than Daniel Jones, because I do think to a certain
degree it's kind of been like over corrected and people
kind of forget what he was as a quarterback and
you know, some of the erratic decisions he made and
(39:27):
some of the reason why he isn't the started anymore
in New York.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
Now.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
You can say it's infrastructure, you say it's coaching. You
can also say it's on the quarterback and the guy
who didn't play well. So if you look at some
of his career numbers, I think it's seventy touchdowns forty
seven interceptions. That isn't like some ringing endorsement of a
guy who makes the greatest decisions and take care of
the football. And obviously his last season with the Giants
was so bad they just benched him and told him,
you know, good luck and good riddance. So I don't
(39:51):
want to sit here and act like this is a
guy who is like this really cerebril quarterback who.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Makes all the throws and makes all the best decisions.
Not really, you.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Know, I mean this is the lesser of two either.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Yeah, and there's a reason he was on the street.
Speaker 2 (40:04):
And then to the point, but to the point about
Anthony and Shane Stiken, my question to him would be
and I And honestly, if he makes this decision or
not to start Anthony or not, I still think it's
a question worth asking, is what role do you play?
Because you advocated for them to draft him. This is
(40:26):
on the record, it's draft Yeah, so like this, this
isn't in this situation where this wasn't Jim Mersey saying, oh,
this is my guy. No matter what you say. You
advocated for that. You went to Chris Ballard and Jim
Mersay and said when they, you know, broached the topic,
you said, I believe I can make this guy into
an NFL quarterback and into a winner. And we haven't
(40:49):
seen that. So I understand the self preservation kicks in.
You want to win games, but I think it would
be a bit you know, uh, I don't think this
genius is the right word, but it would be a
bit you know, not real in my opinion, if you
sit up there and say, oh, well, this guy gets
the best chance to win, you are the reason Anthony
was is here in the first place.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
A big reason why that.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
You are part of the miss evaluation, miss development. Have
you once a Yeah, we've talked about it. Initially Anthony
got drafted. We all were saying, does he even end
up here if Shane isn't the coach, And at the
time I was thinking no, no, because at the time
Shane was viewed as this guy who could develop quarterbacks
or help quarterbacks grow. I know he's worked with Jalen
Hurts obviously most recently before Anthony, and then before that,
(41:33):
I think it was justin Herbert. So that's the conversation
I think he has to have, Like just to boil
it down to the preseason, we've seen these two guys
play in Colts uniforms. The worst play from Richardson was
a sack that could have been a strip. Sack knocked
him out of the game. Ten guys on offense were
all on the same page. He was not. The worst
play for Jones is probably what the Tyler Warren miss
(41:55):
on Saturday, Probably where the guy's open and he misses.
In the coach's eyes, what's more egregious.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
Yeah, probably certainly the missing your own assignment to the
answer I think Jackson's.
Speaker 4 (42:08):
Where this is. Yes, there are so many signs to
Danie Lotski's point that yes, you commit to this guy
fourth overall pick. And yes, again I think they should
go with Richardson. But these head coaches live in a
much different bubble of Hey, who can I trust? Who
is a little bit more controllable? It's less or two
evils let me be very clear, but if that is
(42:29):
the predominant question in Shane Steichen's eyes, and I think
Daniel Jones is a lot realer.
Speaker 1 (42:36):
We may find out later on today when Shane Stykeen
meets with the media around eleven o'clock or so. Coming
up next, we'll check in on a big event that
happened over the weekend here in Indianapolis, what it means
for the future. And also we've got the Tour Championship
coming up. We'll talk a little bit about that as
we continue next on ninety three five and one O
seven five Russian headlong end of the middle of the week.
(42:56):
It's Tuesday here at ninety three five one or something
five the van Tuesday everywhere as a matter of fact,
and Kevin Bowen on my left, James Boyd to my right,
so it crossed the way. It's Mark Dyton and on
the Payloss Liquers hotline right now, one of our favorites,
Indiana's own Indianapolis's own Will Haskins, who is a broadcast
or an author. He focuses on golf. He focuses on
(43:17):
lots of sports as well. And good morning, well, happy Tuesday.
Speaker 10 (43:21):
It's not a major's week and I'm a guest on
the show, something good must have happened.
Speaker 1 (43:25):
Well, how are we happy?
Speaker 10 (43:27):
Happy Quarterback Decision Day. I don't know what the book
makers have on it, but I know it's going to
make for good.
Speaker 6 (43:32):
Sports talk radio.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
So who do you like?
Speaker 6 (43:36):
Depends on what role I'm in.
Speaker 10 (43:37):
If I'm a coach and my.
Speaker 6 (43:39):
Job is on the line, Daniel Jones.
Speaker 10 (43:41):
If I'm trying to make the best potential franchise move
moving forward, it's Richardson. But let's be honest, it's it's
just kind of a a turd burger, right, Like you're
just going to sort of stuck with whatever you're going
to have the rest of the year.
Speaker 3 (43:54):
Berger.
Speaker 4 (43:54):
I think I've almost had one of those of the
sausage festa the night when I reached into the old
toilet there. That was well said by well he must
do this.
Speaker 1 (44:00):
Let me work that into the next column there.
Speaker 4 (44:02):
Well, I know you are a busy man this morning,
doing some great things that I'm jealous of, So we
won't keep you long. But you were an attendee on
Sunday at the Live Golf tournament up there at the
Chatham Hills in Westfield. And I thought you painted a
really first off, but that was a very accurate picture
of the good the bad. So if you don't mind
(44:24):
for an audience that maybe did not attend it, what
did you like about it and what did you not
necessarily like about it?
Speaker 10 (44:31):
Yeah, I mean, let me preface it with how many
people saw me there and they were like, oh my gosh,
you're an enemy territory, Like what are you doing?
Speaker 6 (44:36):
Purist? Like here for the purist.
Speaker 10 (44:40):
Yeah, all sort of tongue in cheek with everything. Obviously,
you know, most of my weeks out on the PGA tour,
you know, I think we've arrived at a place where, yes,
we're losing it moving forward.
Speaker 4 (44:55):
Try again, go back to where you were at the
start of this interview. Yeah, we're reaching a point where
I don't know if the Saudis have your phone, of
the PGA tour has your phone, but your phone.
Speaker 10 (45:04):
Yeah, we're just reaching a point where I think there's
just so much you know, apathy to the fact that
there's not any progress moving forward, that everything is just
sort of existing. And I'll preface this too, like we
know that Indianapolis and Central Indiana does sporting events better
than anywhere else. So whatever is going to happen, I mean,
it could be an international cricket tournament. We're going to
turn out and it's going to be phenomenal. And so
(45:25):
from an event standpoint, you know, I met my expectations.
I knew it was going to be an event. I
knew it was going to be loud. I knew it
was going to be a party. And that's exactly what
you got when you went there. And I think that
everybody that attended from essentially Indiana standpoint, was thrilled with
the activity level. It was great for kids. I know
that all the organizers, the city of Westfield has rolled
(45:46):
out the red carpet and they deserve a ton of
kudos for the sacrifices made and the work done behind
the scenes. Everybody there just you know, did everything that
they could, and I think they they blew the expectations
out of the water of Live coming here, because I
think LIVE has really struggled in a lot of other
places of having sort of the backbone and the support
(46:06):
and the strength of an organizing group like we have
here in Central Indiana, and so I think that showed
in the turnout.
Speaker 6 (46:13):
It showed in the end.
Speaker 1 (46:15):
But ah, we've got a bad cell phone today. He's
going to reset on that. But yeah, I think Kevin,
you would be the perfect guy to talk about this.
Are we get to the point where the differences between
Live and PGA for a lot of fans like they're
just apathetic towards the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
Well, I think Will was pointing out there pretty accurately.
I don't think anyone pays attention to live unless it
shows up in your own market, and then we love
sports and people that attended it I think largely had
Will's I guess is in agreement with what Will said
about being very fan friendly and catering to younger kids.
But I mean, I am a sports fan, I or
(46:56):
at sports fan, and Friday was the first time I've
ever watched a live golf hole and I don't think
I'm like in the minority necessarily on that. I think
a lot of sports fans a struggle to find it
and b have ever thought about necessarily watching it, And
when you are watching it, I don't know if it
just doesn't come across in my opinion in the same
way I think Team Golf at times can just be
(47:18):
a hair forced as well. Well, thank you for calling
us back, continued, because you were in a beautiful train
of thought.
Speaker 10 (47:26):
Yeah, no, I think I don't know where I cut out.
But again, the event was fantastic. And I think that
just from my standpoint of attending a lot of different
golf tournaments. Obviously each and every week, the golf felt
secondary until the very end of the actual day. And
if you're there to take your kids and you want
to go to the fan experience and you.
Speaker 6 (47:43):
Don't care about seeing a golf shot, and that was great.
It was a really good event.
Speaker 10 (47:47):
It just it could have been any sporting event, I
think surrounding the entire property, and from an event standpoint,
I think it went off really well. They crammed a
ton of people in there. They set a domestic record
for most attendees at a United States live event. And
just like the succepths they've had that lives had in
a place like Australia, when you take something like this
to a place that's starved for a professional golf tournament,
(48:09):
you're going to have a lot of people show up.
And again, it was a really good hang. The hang also,
I realized that I could go forty five minutes without
seeing a golf shot. And then even when I was
around sort of the golf, it felt like no one
was really paying attention to the golf at many places
on the actual golf course.
Speaker 4 (48:28):
And that's fine.
Speaker 10 (48:29):
I mean, there are plenty of PGA Tour events where
thousands of people show up every day and they have
no intention of actually paying attention to the golf.
Speaker 6 (48:35):
I think the difference though, between.
Speaker 10 (48:37):
The two of them is the fact that it's they
want you to be a part of the golf tournament
at some of those places. And then a lot of
the spots that I was around, I thought on Sunday
in the final round, until it came down to the
final hole and the final couple of groups, I don't
think it really. I don't think anybody cared if you
were paying attention to an actual golf tournament that's taking place,
and that just felt kind of odds to me.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
Well, to follow up on that, you mentioned how you
know fun it was, I guess for children or people
with kids. Can you elaborate that, elaborate on that a
bit more? Was it kind of like the cold city
vibes we get out in Westfield for the cold training
camp was like a state fair. I guess what things
did you see that you thought, Okay, if you got
some young ones, this would be a nice activity day
for you.
Speaker 10 (49:17):
Yeah, James, I mean, I think the first and foremost
is there's just there's more noise, there's more energy, right,
so if your kids are running around and they're being
you know, they're running up and down a hill. It's
not like some weeks where you know you got to
try and you know, hone your children in and keep
them a little bit quiet. Because you had a golf
tournament and then the fan village experience where they had
all of the team branded stuff, and that's a separate conversation.
(49:39):
I don't really know how the team thing is going
to last. Like getting this whole idea of team concept
up the ground, there's a business model behind it. I
understand what Live is trying to accomplish. I don't really
know if from a golf standpoint it was there was
really nothing to track the team events outside of a
little thing on the leaderboard.
Speaker 6 (49:56):
It is really hard.
Speaker 10 (49:57):
They're forcing this team thing I think a little bit strong.
But from a brand standpoint, when you went to the
fan experience, you had all of these really cool, colorful
areas where you could hit a flop shot over you know,
a cutout of Phil Mickelson or a pettigoat from the
range Goats, which I get bubble Watch and travels with
actual goats that are in there. And I saw so
many families that they could just spend an hour in there,
(50:19):
and certain weeks in the PGA too are They're a
great fan build out and experiences and stuff for kids.
But this one to me really like it just felt
really fun, you know.
Speaker 6 (50:27):
And you could do some things.
Speaker 10 (50:28):
So again, it was no different than going to the State Fair.
Right like you got there was a petting zoo, there
were games, there were concessions with fried food for your children.
It just happened to be that this State Fair experience
was at a professional golf tournament instead of down off
of thirty eighth Street. So again I was especially for
a town like Westfield, for a suburb that is just
(50:50):
you know, full of families. I thought it was great.
And you know, we're back again next year here in
the city of Minnapolis hosting that event at Chatham Hills.
They have twenty thousand again every day next year. I
think they probably could because again, if it was a novelty,
if it was let's show up and see what this
actually was, and you happen to take your kids out,
then maybe you'll go again next year because you had
(51:11):
a good time, and maybe it's not ninety five degrees
outside like it was, because I mean a lot of
people suffered through a really hot weekend for a couple
of days to be able to see the golf. But yeah,
I thought it was really really cool for families to
be able to experience that, and it makes it, I think,
more of a sell, especially there locally, because you have
so many families that are nearby.
Speaker 4 (51:30):
Well, I want to leave you with this and thank
you for laying all that out there. And I know
again you've got far more important golf related items to
do on this Tuesday morning. Let's go here from a
central Indiana standpoint and take cricket Stick out of it.
We've seen Cricket Stick obviously hold some of the most
marque events that you can hold live, obviously pumped a
large sum of money into Old Chatham to try and
(51:53):
whatever instill a championship vibe on of course that I think,
to be fair, probably was not built to necessarily host
these sorts of events. It's you know, whatever Bridgewater two
point zero. If you want to look at it from
a northern suburbs standpoint, if you could have some money
funded into a local course, let's just call whatever Indianapolis
(52:14):
and surrounding counties to host a championship type of tournament
pro golf, I guess to keep it broader, what courses
would come to mind? Again, not cricket Stick Division, Yeah,
and I.
Speaker 10 (52:26):
Mean cricket stick is I think hoping that a BMW
Championship returns there in the near future.
Speaker 6 (52:30):
That you've got a US Senior.
Speaker 10 (52:31):
Open coming up, so that obviously is kind of the
main hub when it comes to prestigious I would say,
even more legitimate type of golf competition type places. And
so that obviously being off the table, you know, Sagamore
was I think in the running to almost have that
live event. I think that that from a country club standpoint,
maybe offers a little bit more of a challenge. And look,
it's been a challenging summer from a turf management standpoint
(52:54):
for everybody in central Indiana. You know, all the rain
and all the heat is really hard to make grass grow.
The good grass, I should say the weed grass has
no problem with it, but the good grass. And you
could see how tax Chatham was over the course of
the week. There was a lot of white paint out
there for some ground under repair, which was too bad,
and I think it forced them to sort of set
up the course a little bit differently as well, because
they had to deal with so many of those stressed areas.
(53:15):
But to answer your actual question, I mean, I mean,
there are so many places that if you give me
an unlimited budget, Like I'm always very loyal to a
place where I played for a long time over at
the Fort on the East Side. I think if you
pumped a ton of money into that place and got
it in the shape that it could be that it's
just a world class piece of property. I don't know
how big of a test it would be from professional golf.
(53:36):
I think you'd see scoring about the same way. But
I like the routing up. But I like the potential
from an event hosting standpoint out there, look from a
party standpoint this past week, I kept saying to myself,
I kept saying it last week and again, kudos to
the City of Westfieldy're the ones that really took the
you know, took the bull by the horns here and
said we're going to run this thing. And I don't
know the politics of you know, I know sports Core
(53:56):
was involved in some way and all these other sorts
of things. But if you truly want to make this
they blow out event, and you think that you can
get more than twenty thousand people there, which you can't
do next year because they were capped. You can't have
more than twenty thousand people around Chenn Mills.
Speaker 6 (54:08):
There's just not space for them.
Speaker 10 (54:10):
This was a perfect event for the Brickyard, and I
think that the Brickyard has you know, has certainly shown
that it can host big golf events. But if it's
truly about the event, if live is the F one
of golf, then go to where you've had an F
one race. Go where you can fit you know, fifty
thousand people if you're going to blow this sort of
thing out. So from a live golf standpoint, I think
(54:30):
that would be the no brainer if that's where you're
looking to do it at an event like that, because
it is more about the event than it is about
the golf. But yeah, there are so many cool plays.
I mean, I would love to see those guys stretch
this seventy seven hundred at Purgatory if you put a
little bit of money into that golf course to make
it ready for a championship. But there's so many things
that go into that logistics. How to get people there
where you're going to put hospitality, the footprint has to
(54:51):
be absolutely right, and I just keep thinking, if this
is more about the event than it is about the golf,
then there's no reason why you shouldn't have it at
the track.
Speaker 1 (54:58):
I would love to see an event there. Last thing
before I go Tour Championship this weekend at East Lake
in Atlanta. Is there any stopping Scotty Shuffler from anything
at this point?
Speaker 6 (55:08):
Yeah? Fatigue.
Speaker 10 (55:10):
I mean he's had to play high leverage golf now
for two weeks in a row in both Memphis and
a steamy Baltimore. I'll be on the call shout out
on FJA to a radio starting on Thursday. I think
it's the only thing that can get in his way
if he's had to play so much, and the fact
that they've adjusted this year and it's everybody's starting at
the same score. There's no more adjusted strokes. He has
no benefit whatsoever having been the dominant player through the
(55:32):
playoffs and through this season. So I think the one
thing that could stop him is just fatigue.
Speaker 6 (55:37):
You know.
Speaker 10 (55:37):
I'm sure he's not doing a heavy load right now
of lead up to it and working out and practicing.
He's probably managing his energy as best he can. But
Rory took the first playoff event off and plays really
well at east Lake, and he hasn't had to play
high leverage golf the last couple of weeks like Scotty
Has and a few other players I think would fit
into that mold as well. So can somebody beat him
this week? Absolutely? If he's a favorite for a reason. Absolutely,
(55:59):
we haven't seen anybody play golf like this.
Speaker 6 (56:01):
Ince Tiger Woods.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
Always good to talk to you and hear your voice. Man,
you're the best. Will.
Speaker 4 (56:05):
Thanks, guys, have a blast today, Send me a ricap.
Speaker 1 (56:09):
There you go. Will Haskett on the Payless Liquors hotline
right there. I know golf is not your number one game, James,
but interesting that once again, does that sound a tiny
NATS void? By the way, what like James is a
very non big golf fan. Does what Will just described
out there? Rob says live golf reminds me of the
snake pit at the five hundred. It's a party inside
(56:31):
a sports event. Does that sound appealing for you to
attend more so than a real PJ two.
Speaker 3 (56:35):
Yeah, And honestly it does.
Speaker 2 (56:36):
When once you said like State Fair vibe, I was like, Okay,
I can get with that, and as long as I
don't have to like necessarily stand there and you know,
be this pristine golf fan that doesn't say anything and
keep quiet and all this stuff. If there is music going,
you know, I've seen kids having a good time, food
being offered. I think that would be something I'll be
interested in. Honestly, it's something that I will try to
(56:57):
actually try to make a move to next year if
I get there.
Speaker 1 (57:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (57:01):
Here, to me, it feels like, you know, watching a
pro am on a Wednesday, where no one's really taking
that seriously. Someone I'd reach out buddy of mine. I
was like, hey, what do you think He's kind of
felt like a minor league baseball game. You know, just
kind of that vibe, which again I I it's not
my cup of tea, but from people that went, I think,
especially if you fall into much more of a casual
aspect to it. It was appealing. Boy. Now now he's
(57:25):
got my mind racing on golf courses in central Indiana.
That could they got some big, old saudy money behind it?
What could they turn their course into to host a
championship type of event? I mean, Brickyard we have seen
host some events, not at I think even the level
of live certainly not what cricket stick has held, but
just an interesting thought process.
Speaker 1 (57:44):
For like they used to have out there women in
Tech was I thought I went there a couple.
Speaker 4 (57:50):
Of Senior Tour event they had well, so yeah, they've
done both of that. I think there's been rumors of
what Roger Pinske would and I don't know. I mean,
is there is there a Fox element to I am
s again?
Speaker 1 (58:00):
Would be?
Speaker 4 (58:01):
Didn't Greg Greg Shaw mention you know in Paddy Yeah
and so okay? Fox aired what this weekend Golf Live
Gold they are live? Now? Fox is what thirty take
in IndyCar. Do you start connecting the dots and say,
could there be a brick Yard crossing presence there?
Speaker 1 (58:18):
I wouldn't be shocked at all. I wouldn't be shocked
at all. And it just goes back on the underlying
thing too. It just doesn't seem to matter in Indianapolis,
whether it's a Super Bowl, a National championship, college football game,
the Final Four, whatever it happens to be, All Star games,
LPGA tournaments, senior golf tournaments, live tournaments. We've had the
(58:38):
PGA out there obviously at Crooked Stick a couple of times,
with some great results in big time thing. This is
again I say it all the time. People probably get
tired of me hearing it, but Indianapolis is as big
as sports city as there is in America, just consistently,
always stuff coming around.
Speaker 3 (58:57):
Well.
Speaker 4 (58:57):
I love that, especially with the suburbs being at the
population size.
Speaker 2 (59:01):
I was going to say, can we claim with the
Westfield set up as Indianapolis is that.
Speaker 4 (59:04):
Now there was part of me it felt bad for
Weerfield because they kept on saying Live Indianapolis on the TV.
I'm like, this is a good that's how they branded it.
Ten miles from from Indy. But you know, when you
think about the Fisher's Event Center, you think about the
new Arena Noblesville, you think about live golf. I mean again,
you are starting to get much more than just you know,
four sixty five and inside of it there, So I
(59:26):
promise we'll move on from the old live golf talk.
I know it's not maybe the most prominent thing people
want to listen to, but I did think it was
important to, you know, offer a little bit of perspective.
I know I am not a fan of it, but
I know I don't speak for everyone by any means, so.
Speaker 3 (59:41):
You sure don't. Because I am now.
Speaker 4 (59:42):
I appreciate it. Will's thoughts on it?
Speaker 5 (59:44):
What if Max got into live golf? Would you disown
him or would you appreciate that? If he like got
into golf. But he was more of a live fan.
Speaker 4 (59:52):
So he's a Bryson fan. He's a film fan.
Speaker 5 (59:54):
Yeah, going to the petting and all that stuff. I
got him into it.
Speaker 4 (59:58):
I might have put him in that porter potty and
shut the door ward.
Speaker 11 (01:00:01):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:00:01):
Wow, you know what I respected. I gotta teach your
kids some loyalty.
Speaker 4 (01:00:06):
Thank you, James. All right, Mark, let's check things James.
Speaker 7 (01:00:11):
The Morning Checkdown on nuety sweet five and one oh
seven five the fan?
Speaker 12 (01:00:15):
Can you do that with your fan? Can you do
that with your own children? But where do you draw
the line in sports fandom with your own children. Do
you let them choose or do you demand that they
follow you?
Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
I think you have to let at a certain point
they're gonna choose anyway. I think whether you're whether you
demand it or not.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
I mean where I was raised, I don't know. It
just depends on if you're a hater or not. You know, genetically,
I think it was a hater. My dad was a
Knicks fan growing up, and I just could not get
with that.
Speaker 1 (01:00:43):
No check Mark the girls.
Speaker 4 (01:00:45):
If all of a sudden they came home and were like, well,
you know, Cindy lou A Recess is a Reds fan.
I think I'm gonna be a Reds fan. I mean,
that's not gonna go over too well. I wouldn't love it,
but I would give them two stipulations. You can pick
whatever team you want root for, as long as it
is isn't the Cardinals or the Packers.
Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
In which case you want to get out of the whale.
Speaker 5 (01:01:06):
You want to get disowned.
Speaker 4 (01:01:07):
You coming in Brownsburg, Green and Yellow, and Nora or
Addison that they are a Packers fan. Mark someone, please.
Speaker 1 (01:01:16):
Mark's gonna be all like, hey, I'm watching the Cubs
game today. You guys have work to do in the backyard.
Speaker 5 (01:01:21):
Oh, they for sure will be doing. Yeah, that's marks
they'd be doing.
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
My parents' counter to that being taken out of the
wheel will be like, well, we're broke anyway, so you
wouldn't getting nothing.
Speaker 5 (01:01:28):
Regardless, you're sleeping the clubhouse in the backyard. From here on.
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
Out story of the day the Indianapolis Colts. We think
James Boyd will get a starter named at about eleven
o'clock this morning, or does this continue for another week?
Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
Who knows, but I would expect something to be said
today on the quarterback front, and I would hope that
is the case.
Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
I'm prepared for that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:48):
And Shane stykeing is eleven fifteen am to day over
at West fifty sixth Street.
Speaker 3 (01:01:53):
I will be there and we will bring the latest
to you. You're I want to send by the fan
for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:01:57):
Looking forward to that. Kevin Bowe. We also have to
talk about a signing on defense at cornerback, and a
pretty major signing as well, a five million dollar one
year deal for Xavian Howard the cornerback.
Speaker 4 (01:02:09):
Yeah, very decorated corner. You have to go back a
little bit on the resume though to see him playing
at the level that he was playing at in Miami.
Some ties with Louianna Rumo first two years in the NFL,
lou was his position coach. But Xavian is thirty two
years old. He did not play in the NFL last season.
You do not find many thirty two year old quarterback
(01:02:30):
cornerbacks period, let alone them playing at a very effective level.
So we'll see. I think it's a fascinating sign. He
had a position that has had a slew of injuries.
And again, James, the vibe I got from Loui an
Arumo yesterday. This is not someone that's going to come
in here and simply pass out coffee to the youngsters.
This is someone that is going to come in here
and I get the vibe, is going to play and ironically,
(01:02:52):
your opponent Week one at Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
All right, and they will be playing Saturday afternoon in
Cincinnati against the Bengals for the third and final pre
season game. Now, it'll start at one, and we'll have
all the pregame coverage for you, including the game itself
right here. On ninety three five and one oh seven five.
Another off day for the Indiana Fever. They were off yesterday.
No word on the severity of the injury to the
knee of Sophie Cunningham, which we watched on Sunday. She
(01:03:17):
was scheduled to get an MRI yesterday, James, but I
haven't seen anything anywhere of any update on how that
turned out.
Speaker 3 (01:03:24):
Yeah, I don't have one, So just wait and see
what happens.
Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
He's waiting for a podcast.
Speaker 3 (01:03:28):
Maybe maybe could you imagine Lord have mercy?
Speaker 4 (01:03:32):
I say that half joking.
Speaker 3 (01:03:35):
Well, I would hope that we get an official team update.
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
All right, We'll find out and we'll keep it here
on that later on today as well. Major League Baseball yesterday,
big series for the Chicago Cubs this week. They start
the week trailing the Milwaukee Brewers in that Central Division.
The Brewers, of course, coming off a fourteen game winning
streak that was snapped by the Reds a few days ago.
But last night the scheduled double header, the first one
Brewers shut out the Cubs seven to nothing. The second
(01:03:58):
one was mercifully arc postponed.
Speaker 5 (01:04:01):
Yeah, the Cups kind of look like Kevin Bowen at
Sausage got their hands deep in the porta potty, just
digging around trying to find something and they're finding a
whole lot of nothing right now.
Speaker 4 (01:04:10):
All right, digging is a very loose term. There it was.
Speaker 1 (01:04:14):
You just reached down grab the handle.
Speaker 4 (01:04:16):
Floating well, and I think some other items in the
porter body might have been contributing to the floating there.
By the way, David here in the YouTube chat says, uh,
my daughter took a full candy bar from a Steelers
fan during Halloween to say that they are better than
the Colts. Mark, if one of your daughters was presented
a full sized candy bar on Halloween and they had
to say, go, pack, go, would you allow that?
Speaker 1 (01:04:40):
I would.
Speaker 5 (01:04:41):
I would say you can get that. I would write
the address down first of all, like I'm gonna bring
a carton of eggs later and we're gonna you guys
can make some omelets in the morning. No, no, like
we will. We will take our business.
Speaker 1 (01:04:54):
You might get a nibble off that little.
Speaker 5 (01:04:57):
We'll go to five below, We'll go to dollar. I
will get you a Kingside candy bar. You say those words,
and you're gonna get a bar of soap.
Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
I could totally see Mark TP in a house like
back in the day.
Speaker 4 (01:05:06):
Like I could see the EyeBlack.
Speaker 5 (01:05:08):
I we act a house for sure, because they gave
out fake dollar bills back in the day.
Speaker 1 (01:05:11):
It makes me wonder, Kevin, have you bribed your kids
with anything to get them to go along with a
certain again.
Speaker 4 (01:05:17):
We were a house divided back during the Notre Dame
Indiana playoff game. And I think Rosie knows how much
Notre Dame means to me, and so she does occasionally
like to poke fun at it. But Rosie and I
are going to Notre Dame perdue here in the month.
Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
Who's she gonna be rooting for.
Speaker 4 (01:05:29):
She's gonna be decked down, and.
Speaker 3 (01:05:32):
I hope she is going to be for a team
that will actually win.
Speaker 4 (01:05:34):
I think Maddy thought that was a dumb idea, but
I mean, spend the money on the Notre Dame game.
But whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:05:40):
Here I am great Weather Costlewall season is here. I
am Team Kevin On.
Speaker 4 (01:05:43):
By the way, I saw this instagram. Let me see
what I can find it the other day that I
meant to share with you guys. That to me sums
up everything about fall sports fandom. Okay, fifty okay, it's
mid October, fifty eight degrees out. You're playing eighteen holes
of the Boy before a day of football. Your entire
fantasy football team has their achilles ruptured, and your star
(01:06:04):
player's Adam Thielen. Your parlay busted on the first play,
and your favorite team is being dominated by the Chiefs.
Does that not sound like a fall weekend? It sounds
like a Mark Dyton weekend right there?
Speaker 5 (01:06:16):
Or second?
Speaker 4 (01:06:19):
How many times and my fantasy football career, I've literally
said to myself, I think Adam feelin is due today.
Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
Speaking of fantasy football, we're going to take one more
interrant later on today, Mark.
Speaker 5 (01:06:31):
We can if we've got plenty of teams to fill up.
So yeah, we got to come up with a question
and make people work at it. But yeah, we can
do that.
Speaker 1 (01:06:37):
We will do that in the nine o'clock hour. One
other baseball note, the Reds did beat the Angels last
night late. Four to one was the final score there.
Gavin Lux had a two run home run with an
early lead. Kevin, you decided to get hey, I can
go to bed now right.
Speaker 9 (01:06:50):
Yes.
Speaker 4 (01:06:50):
I was very happy about that. And to wake up
and see that the Reds did win and shout out
to Tyres Halliburton. I know this happened over the weekend,
but donated. Was it three million? Yes? To is it?
Oshkosh High? Is that where he went? Oshcosh North, Oshcosh North? Awesome?
I know, Ty, that's meant a lot to him, his
high school community and his community in general. So he's
(01:07:11):
done some puma stuff with this high school before and
now obviously a massive financial contribution there. So really cool
to see. I know that behind closed doors. Who knows
what everybody's like, but Tyru Saliburton strikes me as a
pretty genuine, genuine human and that's rare.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
I love it, love it, love it all right, coming
up on a moment, we'll check in on the fan
text line. Some folks coming through with questions. We've got
answers for you. It's next ninety three five and one
O seven five the Fan, Good morning, Welcome into the
Fan Morning Show. Got jab groove it again.
Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
I'm suassy, but I am for real.
Speaker 1 (01:07:49):
What did you just do with the microphone there? He
just swung it back and forth.
Speaker 5 (01:07:52):
It was in my way and it's it's swung back
towards me.
Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
I like that. We're hoping to get word on a
starting quarterback for the Colts today. But there's no guarantee
that we will. We think there will be an announcement
that they'll be hoping.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
Why not play that one more.
Speaker 1 (01:08:06):
You want one more week of drummer.
Speaker 4 (01:08:09):
Expectation, Play them Saturday afternoon against the Bengals, for all
I care. If the Colts reached the point where they
like can't play they're starters on Saturday because they're too hurt, probably,
like if they wanted to do the dress rehearsal thing,
are they are? They just actually a very good question.
Speaker 2 (01:08:25):
I probably they probably have reached that point, Kevin, because
I was going through a list of injuries even before
Saturday's game took place. I mean when our Ryman was out,
Josh Downs was out, Alec Pearce was out, Kenny Moore
was out, Nick Cross was out for getting a few
quitty pay was out, you know, Jaylen Carlile. So yeah,
I would think these are all players that are starters,
(01:08:46):
are competing for starting spots.
Speaker 4 (01:08:47):
Yeah, Brad Smith got hurt in the games. Yeah, Franklin
is still not.
Speaker 3 (01:08:50):
I guess at some point you certainly do have to
have the conversation.
Speaker 6 (01:08:53):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:08:53):
I do want to get a quick update on Zaire
and I know they were saying they're just bringing them along,
but you know, I would think that he will want
to get him in particular, will want to get some
you know, live game reps if he can before the
regular season starts. So I'm curious about that because I
was a little shocked that he wasn't out there to
play at all. I know he was dressed for the game,
(01:09:13):
but he just wasn't available Saturday.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
Yeah, And I will say, just to kind of go
back to yesterday and James, you confirm the Liz Frank
injury for Hunter Wohller, just super unfortunate news that you know,
really two rookies not named Tyler Warren that have really
shown a lot of promises year both season ending injuries.
And I'd have to look at it. I don't believe
Justin Wally had injury issues in Minnesota, and I don't
(01:09:36):
think Hunter Woller had many at Wisconsin. I want to
say he was their leading tackler each of the last
two seasons, so obviously I had to play a ton
for that. But he got He was with the starters
on Saturday against the Packers withn't it cross out dude
injury and Hunter Wooler suffered a foot injury, and Shane
after the game actor like it wasn't going to be
that big of a deal. It didn't think it was
(01:09:57):
season ender. So that's a guy that certainly he was
going to make your fifty three men roster. I don't
want to act like Hunter Wolo was going to be when
you're starting eleven, but you know, maybe some sub packages
he could have been involved there. So yeah, your third
round pick and your seventh round pick, two guys in
the secondary, both done for the year.
Speaker 1 (01:10:14):
We'll keep an eye on that and let you know
exactly what happens as soon as it happens. Right here
at ninety three five one oh seven to five of
the fan, I asked you, guys, if you watch any
of the Bengals Commanders Monday night game last night? Largely
I tuned in for a moment just because that's what
was on. So I was checking it out and I
saw Josh Johnson playing quarterback for the Commanders, and I
thought Colt's legend. Yeah, well not just the Colts legend.
(01:10:36):
So I went back and I was just that was bored.
So sometimes you'll go, I wonder what Josh Johnson has
been We don't remember him coming out of the gate
with Tampa Bay early in his career. I think he
spent three years with Tampa Bay. But listen to this.
Since then, he's never had until very recently, a multi
year stay with anybody else, But this is his resume.
After the first three years in Tampa Bay, he spent
(01:10:59):
a year with the forty nine Ers, then in part
of that year with the Browns, then the next year
with the Bengals. Back to the forty nine Ers in
twenty fourteen, Back to the Bengals in twenty fifteen, the
Jets in fifteen, the Colts Kevin in fifteen, the Bills
in fifteen, the Ravens and Giants in sixteen, the Texans
(01:11:19):
in twenty seventeen, the Raiders and Redskins back then they
were the Redskins in eighteen, the Detroit Lions in twenty nineteen.
In twenty twenty, was back with the forty nine ers
for a cup of coffee, twenty one with the Jets,
twenty one with the Ravens, twenty two with the Broncos.
Back with the forty nine Ers again in twenty twenty two.
(01:11:40):
He spent two seasons in twenty three and twenty four
with the Ravens and now plays for the Washington Commanders
at Shadon Daniels backup.
Speaker 4 (01:11:48):
That is a career. Kevin Powen, I remember correctly. I
think he was signed here to be the backup when
Andrew luck first had his shoulder issue, and that was
the infamous Matt Hasselbeck postgame comments of it was coming
out of my basement and attic to aptly describe how
Matt Hausbeck was feeling going into a game where he
(01:12:10):
started in won. I think it was a Thursday nighter
in Houston, So yeah, that is Colt's legend. Josh Johnson here,
this is quite the hypothetical here from Chris. Can I
throw this at you guys, Well, let's hear it. Chris
is so bullish on Shane Steiken. He wants to see
Carly Urse Gordon extend stike In by two more seasons,
(01:12:32):
tell him to play Anthony Richardson this year and then
he will get another quarterback choice if it doesn't pan out.
He believes that if Ballard were to be fired, other
gms think that highly of Shane steike In to keep
him well.
Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
One of the things he's supposed to be is good
with quarterbacks, correct, So is he also not tied in
with ar as much as Ballard is.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
Yeah, I'm reading this back and you imagine that I
really can't. No, I can't see this. If I swiped
my eyes, I still can't see it. That would be
certainly a development, But no, he does not deserve an
extension at all. Coaches who don't make the playoffs in
their first three years don't get extensions. And honestly, he's
(01:13:20):
trying to make it in his third year, so should
say the first two years he hasn't made it, And yeah, yeah,
I got to see some success or something. And I
don't think it's necessarily just x'es and O's what's so
sticking either. You know, whenever there's been big decisions with
his teams, there's been times where he has honestly put
his foot in his mouth speaking about his team with
authority or with any type of validity.
Speaker 4 (01:13:42):
So I would agree with that.
Speaker 3 (01:13:44):
Yeah, there's some growing up that he's had to do
as well.
Speaker 4 (01:13:46):
I think, Yeah, I think there was a balance in coaches,
and not to simplify it to like two areas, but like,
are you good at the axes? And O's that's one area.
And are you a leader of men? Yeah, and I
think the whole leader. Like, it's a fine balance. I
think to try and get sometimes you.
Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
Got to grow. Sometimes you're really good at one and
you got to grow into the other one.
Speaker 4 (01:14:03):
Correct, And I would say the latter one I have
some questions about. But yes, Jeff, to your point, I
think it's a good point. Yes, I think he is.
He Yeah, he's at fault for Anthony Richardson too. I mean,
like it's a misevaluation for everybody in that organization. And
again we debated this in the summer. Did they misevaluate
him more off the field?
Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
They're on the field in terms of preparation and dedication
to the game and love for the game and all
that kind of stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:14:27):
All of it. So, and that's where again I brought
you had to.
Speaker 2 (01:14:29):
Bench him because he didn't prepare the right way in
your two after you named him a team captain, after
he was voted a team captain by his peers. Now,
that is an indictment on whatever you got going on.
Speaker 4 (01:14:41):
And that's where Carolina and Tennessee I brought those up earlier. Again, Carolina,
the coaching staff is no longer there with that drafted
Bryce Young Tennessee. The coaching staff that drafted Will Levis
is no longer there. So I think those are some
factors that you also.
Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
And interesting too that at the you know, the last
seven games of the season last year in Caroline, Dave
Canalis got the best out of Price Young and they
started playing competitive football and had a real chance until
the very end of two games against Philadelphia and Kansas City,
the two Super Bowl teams. They had both those teams
dead to rights and lost in the last thirty seconds
sixty seconds. So there's still time for guys to develop
(01:15:17):
in the right situation, was my point. And maybe maybe
Ar is that guy.
Speaker 4 (01:15:21):
I don't wantch money Josh Johnson made I.
Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Bet for a career backup like that. It's got to
be like four or five million a year. You got
the life. I'm telling you, we have to look up
his career earner.
Speaker 4 (01:15:31):
If that the lifeerors live golf the life.
Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
Let me ask you a question if you if if
you were going to have to play professional golf, but
you found yourself playing on the live, you found yourself
in a position where you had to choose maybe play
live or maybe not play so much.
Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
I choose that porter potty at forty six in Illinois?
Speaker 5 (01:15:51):
Is that what it would Josh Johnson's total career earnings
twelve a little over twelve million.
Speaker 1 (01:15:57):
Career earnings. It's just twelve million. Wow?
Speaker 2 (01:16:00):
Well, yeah, he was joining teams and he wasn't the backup.
He was just on the roster, back to quarterback making
more money than that's true. But yeah, he was a
guy who was, you know, more practice squad and sort
of that role.
Speaker 1 (01:16:11):
I would think he would the guy if he could
land a season long gig. It would be about three
million a year, wouldn't it at this point in time?
But maybe not.
Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
Yeah, but you just read through his resume and he
wasn't staying with one team for a full year.
Speaker 10 (01:16:23):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:16:24):
Jason H. Richardson Jones, I feel like a kindergarten kid
being asked by my parents to choose between broccoli or cauliflower.
Speaker 10 (01:16:32):
At the turd Burger.
Speaker 4 (01:16:33):
Right, Yes, it is really good. That was a really
good comment there by Will haskin earlier turd Burger to
describe the Colts quarterback situation. All right, wait, someone referenced, yeah,
reach into the porter potty for it.
Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
We'll see how it all plays out a little bit later.
Speaker 4 (01:16:47):
Jane, I can reach into the porter potty today.
Speaker 1 (01:16:49):
Yeah, we'll talk a little bit more about summertime sports
and the cults and their situations as we continue Nextit
ninety three to five and one A seven five The
Fit through Tuesday. Good morning, hopefully on our way to
having a starting quarterback name for the Indianapolis Colts a
little bit later on today. And maybe we're all just hopeful, James.
Maybe we're just all hoping against hope we get an
answer today. We'll have to wait and find out, and
(01:17:12):
we'll talk more about that in a minute. In fact,
we can talk about it right now with our next guest.
Zach Keifer writes for The Athletic. He has covered the
Colts for a long time, but now covers the entire
National Football League and also just a terrific writer that
does some great in depth pieces. Uh and they're always
incredibly interesting to read. And he joins us now on
the payloss Liquors hotline. How's that for an intro, Zach Kiefer.
Speaker 11 (01:17:33):
I don't think I can live up to that, but
thank you for the kind.
Speaker 3 (01:17:36):
He ain't know that now you know he's okay.
Speaker 6 (01:17:39):
James, I knew James eventually.
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
Oh wait a second, I gotta see this guy at
some point this year, and I gotta, you know, you know,
give him a little grief. But it is good to
hear from you. I do want to start here, Kevin. Obviously,
the Andrew love piece we we've found out. I think
I found it pretty fascinating. I knew kind of behind
the scenes you had told me for a while you
were working on it, you know, made it out there
to California to talk to Andrew Luck. And I know
this isn't the biggest takeaway from the story, but one
(01:18:04):
of the funniest takeaways it had me thinking, you know,
was the Jacoby Brissett reference. He needed to apply for
the job over at Stanford, and he put down Jacoby
Brissett as one of his references.
Speaker 3 (01:18:16):
And what was your reaction to that?
Speaker 2 (01:18:19):
And perhaps, you know, in all seriousness, that bomb that
he still had with so many guys that he's left
in a way, if that makes.
Speaker 11 (01:18:25):
Sense, Yeah, I think it kind of steaks to a
bigger thing. Right, So this guy was kind of in
a fog for a couple of years. Andrew Luck was
he didn't know what was next in his life. And look,
these are first real problems, right. You have all the
money in the world and you don't know what to
do with the rest of your life. So I don't
really want to throw a pity party for him, but
I think the little moments like you referenced James, like
(01:18:48):
those things helped him remind him how much football was
a part of him. Like he's applying for the first
real job of his life, now, that's what he said.
And I was like, hey, you were an NFL quarterback
for seven years. That's a real job. But he's like, no, like,
my first real world job was this Stanford general mayor
manager position. And he said, you know, like when he
had to list three references, the first three names that
(01:19:09):
came to mind, Chris Ballard, Frank Reich, and of course
his good friend and former back up Jacobe Brissett.
Speaker 4 (01:19:16):
Zach great work man, no surprise whatsoever, but outstanding job
on the Andrew Luck piece. You've obviously had several long
conversations with them prior with this one. Which one made
you say, holy bleep? Which one made you say, wow,
I didn't expect that from you.
Speaker 11 (01:19:36):
Well, it's the first quote in the story, and I
cannot repeat my reaction on the air right now, but
I had asked him this question years ago, like two
or three years ago, and he said I was going
to play until I was forty and I kind of
like brushed it off. We were off the record, I
couldn't report it. And then I went back to it
this time and I asked him and he said I
was going to play till forty or forty five, and
(01:19:57):
then he explained it to me, and my reaction was,
what in the world, Like, do you know who you are?
Like you're saying this like you're gonna break Indianapolis's heart
all over again. But and you know this kav from
covering him like he was. He was like everything he
had to get to Sunday like he would the injuries, everything,
(01:20:19):
Like there was a loyalty, there was a discipline, There
was an obligation that he felt for the city, for
the team, for the franchise, as the quarterback, to get
to the field on Sunday. And I think when it
was over, I think he was lost for a little while.
Speaker 6 (01:20:34):
I think he was in a fog. That's what I wrote.
Speaker 11 (01:20:36):
And I felt that when I had those conversations with
him a couple of years ago, and the coolest thing
for me was that that's over. He is he sounds happy,
he looks happy, he's reinvigorated, he's comfortable with everything. Like
I felt like he hit out for a while, and
he disputes that. I disagree, but like he was nowhere
to be found for two or three years, and now
(01:20:59):
he's out there and he's doing everything, and the people
closest to him are surprised by how much he's embracing
quote unquote the spotlight. So I mean, I heard this
in his voice, and I haven't heard that in his
voice since twenty eighteen when they were rolling win in
nine of ten games going to.
Speaker 6 (01:21:14):
The playoffs with Frank Reich.
Speaker 11 (01:21:15):
Like I heard that Andrew Luck happiness again, And for
me as a.
Speaker 6 (01:21:19):
Reporter, that was just really cool.
Speaker 11 (01:21:21):
It was really cool because I feel like I've chronicled
half of his life at this point, Zach.
Speaker 4 (01:21:28):
I did think that quote that stood out to me,
and I was hoping you could expand on it was
him explaining the guilt. You know, I've always had guilt
about how it ended. You know, I let my teammates down,
do you think that guilt is rooted in any way,
shape or form, and the timing of it, Like I mean,
here we are about ready to approach whatever the six
(01:21:50):
year anniversary of it. Is there any guilt in it
happened in late August versus Hey, it wouldn't have been
maybe as guilty of it if I did it in
February March.
Speaker 11 (01:22:01):
Yeah, one hundred percent. I do think that weighs on him.
It's interesting because there's there's this dichotomy with him and
how it ended, and this is not something he thinks
about daily or anything anymore. But he doesn't regret his decision.
It was the right decision. And he told me this,
He said, when I made the decision, I made it.
And he's never looked back and thought he should have
(01:22:21):
made a different decision. And you know Andrew well enough
to know, like we can believe that, Like I know,
when an athlete's lying to me, I really think he's
telling me the truth. All that being said, I think
he hates the timing of it. I think he hates
that it was fifteen days before the season opener, and
he hates that he had to walk out in the
locker room. You know, when he came back to Stanford
before his senior year and he would have gone number
(01:22:43):
one on the draft and all that.
Speaker 6 (01:22:45):
All he told his coach.
Speaker 11 (01:22:46):
David Shaw, was I gotta finish with my guys like
that was always what drove this guy was the locker room.
And he quit on the locker room. And he's used
that word. He's used the word quit. It's a cold word.
But the reality he walked out on this team fifteen
days before the season opener in which they could have
made a Super Bowl run that year. So I think
(01:23:07):
he wrestled with that for a long time. Just because
it was the right decision doesn't mean he made it
at the right time. And I think he wrestled with
that and that was a really really hard thing to
get over. And I'm not sure he's entirely over it now, Zach.
Speaker 3 (01:23:19):
Has he ever really explained that part of it, just
the why the timing was what it was.
Speaker 11 (01:23:28):
I think he didn't see a way forward, and it
goes back to this promise he made himself. I mean,
twenty seventeen was a really really dark year for him,
really dark things were not good with his student to
be wife, He hated football, He was a miserable person
to be around.
Speaker 6 (01:23:44):
These are his words, and.
Speaker 11 (01:23:45):
He told himself, if I'm ever going down this path again,
I'm done. I don't want to do this to my life.
That's what hit him in August of twenty nineteen, and
I think he was starting to really realize that there's
not going to be a way out. If he gets
this thing fixed, then something else is going to happen.
(01:24:05):
But it's just surreal to think about, like think about
a starting quarterback anywhere in the league right now retiring
like right now, with the season so close. It's just
it just defies the leaf, even now having lived it,
having covered it. But I just think he made that
promise to himself, and he's a man of conviction, and
it had to be the hardest thing he's ever done
(01:24:27):
in his life, and he said it was.
Speaker 6 (01:24:29):
But he kept that promise to himself.
Speaker 11 (01:24:31):
And not meant walking away if it got bad again,
and it did, and boy, the timing was really bad
for everybody involved.
Speaker 1 (01:24:38):
Zach. Obviously, the physical discomfort that he was in played
a huge overwhelming part in all of that. Do you
get the sense that he is still dealing with pain
issues today, or is his body grown away from that.
Speaker 6 (01:24:53):
No, he's good.
Speaker 11 (01:24:55):
I asked him about that, and he likes to go surfing,
and like Andrew luck is like he's got these little
wiry glasses and like, I'm like, dude, what happened? Like
do you even list anymore? And he's like, no, man,
He's like, I'm lucky if I get a twenty minute
surf in every day. And I'm like, oh, that's that's
not an issue we have in Indianapolis, like to sneak
in a quick surf. But it's it's he's so busy.
(01:25:19):
You know, he's got two young kids and he works
long hours. Like the other thing that hit me and
the GM position for college football teams is different for
every team. This guy is not a celebrity GM in
any way, like he is all he needs to be because.
Speaker 6 (01:25:34):
He is he is. He's not the big, strapping goliath
that he used to be.
Speaker 4 (01:25:40):
Yeah, I thought it was interesting. In Zach's piece, you
mentioned Andrew visited Brad Stevens called Sam Presti and you know,
trying to learn a little bit more about what it's
like being a GM. Granted, the college GM probably holds
a little bit more of a you know, raising money,
sort of being a presence within the university than a
professional GM. I guess a question that I have that
(01:26:03):
you know, I don't know people occasionally asked me, but
maybe it's more of just like the random sports fan
that doesn't pay attention to the NFL, of like why
did Andrew Luck retire? Like if you were on an
elevator ride and someone asked you that, I feel like
my answer would be something to the degree of the injury.
Pain in the rehab started to impact the other relationships
(01:26:25):
in his life, and he felt like that was too
much to overcome. Is that the right elevator pitch? Am
I missing anything? If you had to answer that question
in a very sync manner.
Speaker 6 (01:26:37):
You know, it's funny KB.
Speaker 11 (01:26:38):
I could answer it in the most extinct manner you
can imagine, because I asked Andrew that question and it
was well into our conversation and he answered it with
five words, and it just kind of hit me how
easy it was in his mind at that time. I
fell out of love, That's what he said, end of sentence.
(01:26:59):
He said, I fell out of love. And for him
it was that simple. It was like, I didn't enjoy
doing this anymore. This was pain, This was miserable. He
was a miserable person. And he's like, I had to
remove football from my life. And I get asked that
question all the time, even after the podcast came out,
and I'm like, if you want to know why he quit,
(01:27:21):
you need to watch the retirement press conference. He spills
his entire soul on that stage. He does, I mean,
it's all right there, It's all right there in front
of you. And I getting a lot of credit for
doing that, because remember the press conference was going to
be a day later, and his family was going to
be there and it was going to be much more
organized and professional, and instead he's up there with his
ankle taped in a Colt T shirt, fighting through tears
(01:27:44):
after he was booed off his home field fifteen minutes earlier.
That could not have been an easy situation. But you know,
this big question that we've all had, that the NFL's
had for years, Andrew Luck answered it in five words.
Speaker 6 (01:27:58):
I fell out of love.
Speaker 11 (01:27:59):
And I said it was that simple, and he's like, well, no,
it was never that simple. But for him, in his mind,
he didn't enjoy football at that point. And the strange
thing for me was I never thought.
Speaker 6 (01:28:10):
He would be back in football at all. Me and
Holder talked about.
Speaker 11 (01:28:12):
This forever, my colleague Stephen Holder, and we never thought
we'd see him back in football. And that's what I
had to answer with this story. Why is he back
at Stanford fighting another uphill battle back in football?
Speaker 6 (01:28:26):
And the interesting thing is.
Speaker 11 (01:28:28):
He was mad at football for a while. He couldn't
watch games, He'd have dreams about it. He'd walk around
the house and say, I cannot be thirty years old
and retired.
Speaker 6 (01:28:36):
This is ridiculous.
Speaker 11 (01:28:38):
And then slowly but surely, the game that had beaten
the crap out of him the game to pull him
back in and he started to fall in love just
like he had as a teenager. Now he's not playing it.
But it's just interesting. The guy that could do anything
in the world. I thought he would go spend time
in Europe and design buildings and all that stuff, was
volunteering to coach high school footb in Palo Alto and
(01:29:01):
is now facing one of the toughest jobs in college football.
Speaker 6 (01:29:04):
That I did not see Tommy.
Speaker 2 (01:29:06):
Last one from me, Zach. When I look at this
picture of Andrew Luck, which is the lead photo, for
your story. He's got the gray hairs come out of
his beard, and you would think to the guys like
forty and I believe he's what thirty five, thirty six
and so it's in here. But how have you seen
him sort of reinvent himself in this new chapter because
(01:29:27):
as you said, he mentioned falling out of love with
the game, and it's not the same type of love
because you're not playing. But how have you seen him
embrace sort of like the academic student athlete, you know,
oversee your role because as you know, he loves education,
probably just as much as not more than he loves football.
He loves learning and just things of that nature.
Speaker 6 (01:29:48):
Yeah, nice plug there, KB he that's a good question, James.
Speaker 11 (01:29:54):
The most surprising thing that I heard from people around
him to be the precher who lost his job to
Andrew as a quarterback at Stanford and has remained close
to him and Frank Reich as well. They were like Zach,
we didn't think he was getting all in with the
fundraising MC selling stuff, right, like we all know that
(01:30:14):
guy that's not Andrew, and he loves that like Frank's
like Zach, I saw him MC this event last night
and I had to like make sure it was him,
Like he's out there, And that's the surprising part because
he was hidden, you know, he was he was like
bigfoot around here for so long after he retired. And
now he's out there every day. He's talking with reporters like, kyb,
(01:30:36):
you're gonna get a kick out of this. Like when
I walked into his office, he hugged me, like Andrew Lock,
who would hide from reporters for half of his NFL
career in Indianapolis.
Speaker 6 (01:30:46):
I was like, Oh, we're doing that now, like.
Speaker 11 (01:30:47):
It's now in fairness and fairness, we've been through a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:30:52):
But he's really happy.
Speaker 11 (01:30:53):
I think he's really happy that he's back in something
like and this is what it This is what it
went back to for me when I was talking to him,
like he needed to be back in it. He needed
to be back in a locker room, He needed to
be back on a field. He feels reinvigorated. He has
a challenge, like David Shaw says in the story, like
Andrew was never a back of the room guy. You
(01:31:14):
don't become one of the best college football quarterbacks ever
if you're a back of the room guy. In the
NFL and the way it ended kind of made him
go into hiding. I don't think that fits his personality.
I think this job fits it way more. But it's
studying to see how out there he is, how much
he's embracing all the things that he didn't like as
an NFL player. He didn't like it when we would
(01:31:35):
crowd around his locker. He didn't like all the press conferences.
He didn't like all the celebrity aspects that came with
being a star quarterback. And it seems like he's embracing
all those aspects as.
Speaker 6 (01:31:46):
The Stanford GM.
Speaker 11 (01:31:48):
One he needs to he needs to raise money, he
needs to shake hands and kiss babies and all that stuff.
But two, I think he welcomes the challenge. I think
he wants the challenge again because he knows he might fail.
But like you said in the story, I'm a quarterback.
I know what pressure feels like, and I think a
lot of him missed that when he was away from
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:32:07):
Zach, good stuff as always, great job of enterprising that
and getting it together. I know you don't cover the
cults every day, but I also know you pay attention.
Jones or Richardson.
Speaker 6 (01:32:20):
Yes today to day.
Speaker 1 (01:32:21):
Can we get age it? We hope, we hope, we're
looking for it.
Speaker 6 (01:32:25):
I mentioned this today JMV. Yesterday.
Speaker 11 (01:32:28):
I think it's going to be Richardson. I wanted to
be Richardson. I don't feel like Jones has taken the
job from him, But I go back to two things
that give me pause with that. One is when I
talked to Daniel Jones at training camp, and the first
thing he said about what Shane told them about how
the job would be decided was who the coaches trust
that has stayed with me? And then secondly, I think
(01:32:50):
James asked Shane on Saturday after the preseason loss, you know,
how are you going to decide this? And the first
thing he said was who's going to run the operation?
Those are the only thing is that give me pause.
I mean, Richardson couldn't even make it a series in
the preseason without screwing something up and getting hurt. But
I don't think Jones has done enough to win the
job away from the incumbent. But we'll see, because those
(01:33:14):
two things make me think it could be Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (01:33:16):
All right, buddy, we'll look for an answer. Maybe later
today we'll talk to you soon. Great work, Zach, Thanks
guys as always, Zach Keefer on the pay Less Lookers
hotline and look there there are more than a few
people that are texting me, getting at me on the
on X and other things, saying enough luck stuff. Skivvy says,
enough luck, luck stuff. He bailed, he got twenty five million.
Good for him. People have moved on.
Speaker 4 (01:33:38):
Yeah, people still call Andrew Luck a quitter and don't
want to think anything otherwise, And I get that that's
part of being a sports fan.
Speaker 1 (01:33:46):
So yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:33:47):
I also thought Zach's piece hit on some different Andrew
Luck related stuff that we hadn't heard of, and really
a lot of it is GM focused why he used
to becoming a GM, and he is definitely one of the
more prominent college football gms. I mean, if you look around,
I mean Notre Dames GM, for example, is a scout
from the Detroit Lions. I mean, nobody like Andrew Luck.
(01:34:09):
And I mean imagine eight months ago, me sitting here
in the studios and on these airways saying, guys, we're
gonna get Frank Reich versus Bill Belichick coming up this
football season?
Speaker 3 (01:34:28):
Said yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:34:32):
Saturday November eighth, Stanford Cardinal with Frank Reich running out
of the tunnel. Will Belichick run out of the tunnel?
College football coaches they run out of the tunnel? Are
the Is he gonna run? Or is Belichick He's gonna
go with just a light job out of the North
Carolina tunnel? Saturday, November eighth, Stanford at North Carolina. One
item that Zach just hit on there late on Hell yeah,
(01:34:57):
say that again, Martin. Let's the rivalry is back gone?
Oh yeah, I don't think it ended up happening. Zach
brought up James Shane Stackens post game comments. Has Shane
been bracing us for Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (01:35:15):
That or he has the greatest poker face ever?
Speaker 4 (01:35:18):
Or am I making way too much out of Shane
Stackens comments, I.
Speaker 2 (01:35:21):
Think you're making a little too much out of it,
mainly because of the play we've seen. The player we've
seen with Daniel Jones has been more consistent than Anthony,
but it's not like it's been by a mile.
Speaker 3 (01:35:33):
In my opinion.
Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
You look back at, Okay, the last few things they
put on resume right the Packers game for Daniel Jones
that is, Packers suck, terrible first drive, second drive, comes
back and makes a little something happen. The joint practice
one of his worst practices of the spring, or I'm
sorry not to spring the preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:35:53):
You go back even further than that. You look at
what he did. Guess the Ravens. It was okay.
Speaker 2 (01:35:58):
So I don't see this as something where he's suddenly
turned himself into being this super operationally signed. Mean, the
guy muffed a snap and I don't know if he's
on the snap holder or.
Speaker 4 (01:36:10):
The center there, but like, look like it was right
in his hands.
Speaker 3 (01:36:12):
Yeah, I'm thinking, yeah, what are we talking about here?
So I just don't want to I want to be
careful with inflating a little bit too much of what
we perceive Daniel jonesy versus what the reality of him
is and what he has been in the NFL, which
to you know, just put a button on this. He
has been an erratic quarterback in his own right. Like
this isn't some super percent like his compete percentage is
sixty four percent for his career whooped dee doo, But
(01:36:34):
like the player overall has not always been a very
steady player.
Speaker 4 (01:36:38):
I want to hit on this at nine thirty because
I want to expand on it, But I guess to
just kind of put a boat on it right here,
no matter what the announcement is, and we might get
it here in less than two hours eleven and fifteen
chains that can meet to media no matter what name
he says, if he says one for the twenty twenty
five the start of the twenty twenty five seasons is
probably how we should word it, not the twenty twenty
five season, the start of the twenty twenty five season.
(01:37:00):
The winner is the lesser of two evils, like let
me bake that very when we're debating any of this.
The winner is not you know, the second coming of
Brady Montana Manning whoever. Here, it's the lesser of two evils.
That's just the reality of where the cult are at
right now. But I want to expand a little bit
on that coming up here after the break.
Speaker 1 (01:37:21):
We will do that about nine minutes, But right now,
let's check.
Speaker 7 (01:37:24):
It down the morning checkdown on ninety sweet five and
one oh seven five the Fan.
Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
While we anxiously await the words of Shane Steichen A
little bit later on. Today, the Cults have announced that
they've signed cornerback Zabian Howard, linebacker Jake Cheney, and linebacker
Joseph Vaughan. They've also placed tackle Blake Freeland, linebacker Jacob Phillips,
and safety Hunter Wohler on the IR. What's it all.
Speaker 2 (01:37:49):
Meaning, James, Well, it means that for Hunter Woller and
Blake Freeland in particular, I did check on those who
they're off for the rest of the season. Now, I
mentioned earlier, you can bring two players back from IR
with the new NFL rules, but those who are done
for the year, So that's unfortunate there. And then for
exaving Howard, he has some legal issues in the past
that he certainly probably has to speak on at some
(01:38:12):
point whenever we get in front of him. But from
a play standpoint, he's a former four time Pro bowler,
two time All Pro, and he's gonna help or in theory,
help a banged up cornerback room. And from the sounds
of it, Kevin, it sounds like he is being brought
into play. According to lunerumba.
Speaker 4 (01:38:26):
Boy, I always think about this. Yesterday, I definitely remember
him picking off Andrew Luck twice at the end of
a first half in a game. Wait that might have
been lux comeback here. It might have been the twenty
eighteen season, they were outstanding, outstanding interceptions. But it is
wild as I started to kind of rack my brain
a little bit on the Xavier Howard career. You go
(01:38:48):
back so far for when he was at this level.
I mean, it's if this man comes in here, not
only if he starts seventeen games, but if he plays
at a high level, he'll be doing something that corners
just don't do. Thirty two year old corners do not
play at a high level in the NFL. Stefan Gilmore
is the rare, rare exception of the rule there and
(01:39:08):
the Colts all of a sudden exsumeing, assuming the exus
clearly stuck in my brain that Xaviing Howard is going
to be a starter. They have one of the oldest
cornerback trios you've seen in Javerius Ward at twenty nine,
Kenny Moore at thirty, and now Howard at thirty two.
There so again, Hima lu Anarumo have history. First two
years of Howard's career was with lou in Miami, and
(01:39:29):
I get the cornerback situation is kind of put the
Colts a little bit in a scrambling mode here, and
this is quite the headlining move, honestly.
Speaker 1 (01:39:37):
All right, let's check the rest of the National Football League.
Last night, a little Monday night the preseason action. Joe
Burrow two drives with the Cincinnati Bengals, both of them
turned into touchdowns. Jaydon Daniels had one drive for the
Commanders that turned into a touchdown. He didn't throw a
past JB, but he did score on a fourteen yard
scamper before he left the game. Just one drive and out.
So that's where we're at the preseason. Maybe Cincinnati, mm hmm,
(01:40:02):
that's what the cults are. One o'clock that again, Saturday.
Speaker 5 (01:40:04):
Afternoon, Cincinnati, and you were on a Cincinnati There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:40:09):
Now, Joe Flacco is going to start against Cincinnati week one.
Did I see that Browns.
Speaker 5 (01:40:14):
And name the number one started from the Browns?
Speaker 9 (01:40:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:40:17):
Uh baby, my buddy on the Bengals beat Paul Dayer
Junior for the Athletic. He tweeted out that that same
sentence of Joe Flacco starting against uh, the Bengals in
week one was true in two thousand and eight as well.
So that's how long he's been playing football in the
National League.
Speaker 4 (01:40:34):
So I didn't watch the game last night, but I
saw these Borough highlights. You're telling me when he took
those massive sacks, those still ended in touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (01:40:41):
Yeah, I want to say he ended like I want
to say he got a touchdown at least one of them.
His preseason Sasha actually pretty good, Like four of the
five drive they hadn't touchdowns in the drives, and so yeah,
he looked legit. I was decided that he stayed in there.
I've taken some of those big hits.
Speaker 1 (01:40:57):
Major League Baseball. Last night, the Milwaukee Brewers start their
key series with the Cubs. The seven nothing shut out
win in game one of what was supposed to be
mark a doubleheader, but rain got in the way of
the second one. They'll reschedule two of them today, the
first one scheduled to start at two twenty and the
bruis what's honestly, I'm asking this question now, what does
that make the lead now for the Brewers in the summer.
Speaker 5 (01:41:17):
I'm ruling out the division for the Cubs at this point,
but I think it's what is let me look real quick.
I think it's nine games now, it's insane, it is, Yeah,
nine games.
Speaker 1 (01:41:27):
Cincinnati Reds now chasing the Cubs. They win four to
one over the Angels, and the Saint Louis Cardinals also
played yesterday and they ended up with an eight three
victory over the Miami Marlins. White Stress also beat the
Braves thirteen to nine. Anything else you guys want to
throw in this morning here, I.
Speaker 4 (01:41:44):
Have fever off again today. Tomorrow I think is a
big day from Caitlin Clark can try to get back
to practice. They'll play Friday and Sunday against Minnesota here,
so that'll be something. Obviously, the Sophie Cunningham injury update,
we will await that as well. And great to see
that i U is really bolstering their non conference schedule
here in football, the additions of Howard in Miami of Ohio.
(01:42:07):
You guys want to hear the opponents that Indiana has
in their non conference schedule for the next five years.
I'm taking notes old Menyon Kennisall State, Indiana State, Howard,
Colorado State, Western Kentucky, Kennisall State again, Indiana State again
U mass Austin, p Miami of Ohio, Eastern Michigan, chirp
Ball State, Eastern Illinois. And then one more time, the
(01:42:28):
Fighting Jack Doyle's the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. They are
the only power for team in college football without another
power for opponent on the non conference schedule for the
next five years.
Speaker 1 (01:42:38):
That's a murderer's row. If you're marrying, do they lose?
Speaker 4 (01:42:43):
You're all over your audio today, Mark, thank you?
Speaker 3 (01:42:45):
Which one of those games or a few of those
games do they lose?
Speaker 4 (01:42:48):
Oh gosh, I was saying.
Speaker 3 (01:42:50):
The hardest part is trying to figure out that happened
at some point, right, you got to get upstate at
some point.
Speaker 5 (01:42:54):
The hardest part is trying to figure out who's the
worst of the lot of the ads.
Speaker 4 (01:42:58):
Dexter, Williams Homayu quarterbacks will to be kennesas state starter
in Week two. So that's just kind of a fun storyline.
But I don't know, James, they got a first round
pick a quarterback. Is are you going to be better
than they were last year?
Speaker 2 (01:43:09):
That is a good question. I'm gonna say no because
last year that I mean they, I mean, the schedule
is definitely tough from the beach. But if this kid,
I mean and Curtis Rourke had a very nice year.
Speaker 3 (01:43:18):
That's what I'm saying. Like he wasn't their quarterback play
held him back right year?
Speaker 4 (01:43:20):
Right now? That is a good point coming up at
a moment.
Speaker 1 (01:43:24):
More from Kevin. He's got thoughts. We'll let you hear
him as we continue on ninety three five and one
o seven five of the Fan.
Speaker 7 (01:43:35):
You were listening to a fan morning show on sports
Radio ninety three to five and one oh seven five
the Fan, Happy Tuesday, Welcome.
Speaker 1 (01:43:45):
Into the Fan Morning Show. Mark Deckton has always has
our toes tapping this morning, and uh looking forward to
a Shane Stiken press conference a little bit later on today.
When when have we had a more anticipated Shane Stike
and press conference in the in the last year or two?
Speaker 4 (01:43:59):
Kevin, Gosh, probably one of those.
Speaker 5 (01:44:01):
When if you look forward to hearing Shane Styke and
speak Kevin.
Speaker 4 (01:44:05):
Probably one of those benchings, right or why?
Speaker 2 (01:44:09):
It's a funny question from Mark because the answer to
that is probably originally for me.
Speaker 4 (01:44:13):
Yeah, I think Shane's a nice dude. I enjoy talking
to him, you know, away from the microphone. But well, boy, yeah,
on the microphone, it's right, the old mike it is
it can be pulling teeth. I want to go back
to something that we talked about James brought up a
little bit before the morning Checkdown in regards to Anthony
Richard and Daniel Jones and evaluating them. You know, aren't
they really close? And yeah, I mean I largely think
(01:44:35):
if you watch them over the last three weeks, separation
has not really been there. But if you just look at, like,
what are their worst plays?
Speaker 3 (01:44:45):
Oh man, where is this conversation going?
Speaker 4 (01:44:47):
And in the preseason you would probably say, like, Daniel
Jones's worst play was I don't know, air mailing Tyler
warn okay, and Anthony Richson's worst play was probably the
Baltimore play, right, So what that happened on those two plays?
Jones theoretically made the right read, bad throw incomplete. Richardson
(01:45:07):
makes the wrong read, dislocates his spinky out for the
rest of the game, Varius that could have been strip sack.
Go back to joint practice with Green Bay last week.
Both of them didn't have a good day. Richardson was
nine to twenty. I don't think Jones's numbers tell how
rocky of the day it was for him. Yeah, I
thought it was a rock here. E think two picks
(01:45:29):
wasn't his fault?
Speaker 1 (01:45:30):
Thirteen to sixteen, throw on the box, snap for Daniel
Jones to snap.
Speaker 4 (01:45:34):
Yeah, yeah, I mean he did get on it. But yes,
you know, when you look at their worst plays, is
there any sort of element that Shane Sikin says the
Jones one is a little bit more controllable than the
Richardson ones when you've got offensively, we're trusting our quarterback
to make sure everyone's on the same page, and ten
(01:45:55):
dudes are on the same page in Baltimore, But yet
that guy's not on the same page in a vanilla
preseason setting, Like is that something that the head coach
can't get out of his head of the question that
we played the dani Olaski audio earlier. Who do you
trust more? Who do you trust more? If you're whatever,
(01:46:17):
here are the keys to the car, you can take
my daughter on a date? Who's keys?
Speaker 1 (01:46:22):
In either case, a father is trusting a seventeen year
old kid.
Speaker 4 (01:46:25):
One thousand percent. Again, it's the lesser of two evils.
Let me be abundantly clear on that. But I don't
we play this game naturally on the beat of like
you have to put yourself in chains. I can choose,
And it almost seems like some of his words have
like been and again maybe I'm making way too much
out of his words have been like bracing us for
(01:46:47):
Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (01:46:49):
What does it do? Honestly? And we heard Orlowski talk
about that, maybe we'll play it again just for those
who are just joining us, but talking about the fact
that you know, it's not just who you trust who
can make plays, But I mean, what does it do
if you have to bench him for a second time?
Is that it is that the end?
Speaker 10 (01:47:08):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:47:09):
I mean Anthony Richardson obviously past present would indicate, yes,
find me an NFL quarterback that has at the career
ark of Anthony and Richardson and turned out to be
something in the league.
Speaker 1 (01:47:19):
Yeah, we've been talking about it a lot, but.
Speaker 4 (01:47:21):
I mean haven't we all said as well that you know,
the person that doesn't get named the starter today is
just three weeks away from being the starter or what
six weeks away from being.
Speaker 1 (01:47:29):
The fans to be clamoring for that probably a week
four two, Mark, let's play that Dana Rolofsky audio. Again,
We've been talking about a lot, obviously here in Indianapolis,
but they were talking about it with Dani Rolofsky at
ESPN last night. And here's kind of a national perspective.
Speaker 8 (01:47:44):
I would lean Anthony Richardson just because he has.
Speaker 4 (01:47:47):
To play and you took him forth.
Speaker 8 (01:47:49):
The challenge for the Colts aar is one, who do
you trust at that position the most?
Speaker 6 (01:47:54):
And then to.
Speaker 8 (01:47:54):
Which quarterback do you truly believe can get all of
your playmakers to football. Tyler war in their first round
draft pick, needs touches really good player. Michael Pittman Jr.
Needs to get the ball in his hands. They've got
a ton of talented perimeter players. Josh Downs is going
to become one of the better slot receivers in the NFL.
A d Mitchell, another big time playmaker, Alec Pearson. So
(01:48:17):
the quarterback isn't necessarily the guy that has to put
on this cape and carry this offense. There's a ton
of really talented players on the perimeter, and so if
you're Shane Steichen, their head coach, it's like, what quarterback
do you trust not only to just run your offense,
but to just play point guard? And that makes me
lean Daniel Jones. My reservation is this, if you go
(01:48:38):
Daniel Jones, are you then saying Anthony Richardson is done
because you're going with Daniel Jones to sit there and
go win his football games. And if that's the case
and he does that, Anthony Richardson once again does not
get on the field and get reps, which is the
number one thing he needs. So I think it's a
very difficult situation because you're choosing the now or you're
(01:48:58):
choosing the future in both of them are separate.
Speaker 1 (01:49:03):
Thoughts.
Speaker 2 (01:49:03):
James Boyd, I think I think everything he said was
pretty valid, But I just wonder how much we can
weigh your future that you're not so sure of. This
isn't two years ago when you got Anthony all his
promises out there. I don't think there's a future really
(01:49:25):
or a longer rope with either quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:49:27):
I think this is a make or break year for both.
Speaker 2 (01:49:29):
For Daniel Jones, you're looking for redemption and a chance
to prove if you're a starting caliber quarterback in the
NFL again, and if you don't prove that this year,
I don't think that career redemption arc is coming at any
point after this. And then for Anthony, you're trying to
prove that you are or capable of being a starting
caliber quarterback in the NFL and potentially the face of
the franchise. But again, you're asking him to do a
(01:49:50):
lot of stuff he just hasn't done in the past,
and the two biggest ones being stay healthy and be accurate,
and can all that change in one year? I'm not
so sure. So I would roll with Anthony, that would
be my pick. But I could totally see why they
would choose Daniel Jones in an instance, because if you're
just trying to win games, perhaps he gives you the
better chance. But yeah, this is a situation. I don't
(01:50:12):
envy ever being in a situation.
Speaker 9 (01:50:14):
Only.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
The only time I would ever want to.
Speaker 2 (01:50:17):
Twitch seats with Shang Styke, at least in this particular instance,
is for the check. Other than that, No, like this
is the worst decision. I mean, I could talk myself
into either or and not feel good about either or.
Speaker 3 (01:50:29):
Like as Kevin's laid it.
Speaker 2 (01:50:31):
Out, he started the conversation by saying, let's take a
look at their worst plays.
Speaker 3 (01:50:37):
That's that lets you know how ruff it's been.
Speaker 4 (01:50:40):
I mean, I could talk into a lot of things though, No, absolutely, absolutely,
the sight of the building, guys, Kenny Moore, Quentin Nelson,
the Forrest Buckner, jam Taylor. Yeah, you think Shange Stykeen
has asked them their thoughts at all on this?
Speaker 3 (01:50:56):
I think I think not.
Speaker 1 (01:50:57):
Actually, no, do you think, like indirectly though, he's paying
attention to the thing that they're saying, just general conversations
you might be having with them, trying to get a
read on how the team feels in that huddle, because
I've heard so many coaches say the team knows who
the starting quarterback is before the coach does.
Speaker 2 (01:51:14):
I don't really think so, and I don't think you should.
I don't think you should be going to DeForest Buckner
and John Taylor and others to figure out who your
starting quarterback is if you do. If you're doing that, honestly,
I feel like you probably shouldn't make a decision.
Speaker 5 (01:51:25):
I was gonna say, if you're the head coach, he's
your decision, your decision alone. Otherwise you're getting too many
thoughts in your head, and all of a sudden, you're
starting to let the locker room dictate your decision making,
which is never it.
Speaker 4 (01:51:35):
Yeah, it dictates probably too big of a word for me,
But I don't know. I probably a pulse of the leadership.
I think he's interesting. And I also, I don't you know,
Quentin Nelson has always had very public praise for Anthony Richardson.
I would be very curious how like that locker room
generally would vote. I think there is an element of like, hey,
(01:51:56):
you need Anthony because he creates plays that like are necessary.
But also is there frustration of like, wait, hey, when
we're all on the same page and he's not on
the same page, what the hell like aren't we all
held to the same standard. I could see that being
so split and how they view that. And if you're
(01:52:16):
like Jonathan Taylor or whatever, do you sit there and say, hey,
we've got a good running game. We've got all these
pass catchers. Danie Rolotski just laid it out. Just get
the ball to the pass catchers. Even if you do
it in a simple manner, you can you know, boom,
Tyler Warren can catch them.
Speaker 1 (01:52:31):
R On.
Speaker 4 (01:52:31):
You know our defense is going to be better. It's
I feel like that locker room would have a lot
of debate on it.
Speaker 1 (01:52:37):
Did you make anything out of the fact the other
night that one of the first passes that Daniel Jones
threw was a long bomb over the top. It was
not successful, but he took a shot downfield one of
his first few passes.
Speaker 4 (01:52:51):
Like male of Warren. I'm trying to think which play
it was.
Speaker 1 (01:52:54):
I think it was early on. I'll go back and
look what. Maybe you remember which one it was, James,
but it was almost like, hey, I can throw deep.
They didn't complete the pass.
Speaker 3 (01:53:02):
Well, I don't remember this play.
Speaker 1 (01:53:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:53:03):
His first play was a past the mobile that was
short and he ran for nine, but I don't remember
any other.
Speaker 1 (01:53:10):
I'm having fever dreams between the two or James.
Speaker 4 (01:53:13):
I know it said this the the Daniel Jones throwing
the ball down the field. It's not Matt Ryan shot
arm at the age of whatever age Matt Ryan was
two years ago. He can throw it down the field
like there is an arm. It's a willingness and an
accuracy factor. I mean, in the spring, I can think
of at least two or three times Alex Pierce holding
a deep ball from him. Yeah, it's just you know,
(01:53:35):
taking those chances in game settings.
Speaker 1 (01:53:38):
All right, coming up at a moment, Mark, we got
a couple of things right now, right right here. Anybody
who tucks in India eleven the third text, you get
that says India eleven. Mark, we've got a family four
pack to an upcoming game.
Speaker 5 (01:53:52):
We got two family four packs two today.
Speaker 1 (01:53:54):
Yeah, all right, so you would take three and five?
How about that? Sure, Texter, make me more for India eleven.
You got to Indy eleven. You have to work anything.
You just have to look at him.
Speaker 4 (01:54:05):
Were eleven right now?
Speaker 1 (01:54:06):
Indie? Either way, whatever's easier for you on the text line?
Uh so, yeah, two family four packs for that. Also,
I was just delighted in hearing a former college football
coach discussing a great story this morning. I'll let you
hear some of that, and you let me know if
you're delighted about it too. We'll talk about it next
as we continue ninety three five and one o seven five.
Speaker 7 (01:54:27):
If you're listening to a fan morning show on sports
radio ninety three to five and one oh seven five,
the fan.
Speaker 1 (01:54:34):
Not going on here in the nine o'clock hour, mark,
do we have not one, but two winners from the
text line for the Indye eleven family four packs.
Speaker 5 (01:54:41):
Yes, I'm still getting all the names together, but Nick
is one winner. And then we've got another guy who's
giving me his info as we speak. All right, so
we will see, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:54:49):
And towards the end of the hour here we will
have another slot open for the fan morning show Fantasy
Football League.
Speaker 5 (01:54:55):
Correct, Sure, we've got We've got spaces to fill. We've
got the draft on September third. We already know one
player is off the draft board. That is Ady Mitchell.
He's going first overall to Jeff. Everybody else is on
the board, so plenty of players to get at.
Speaker 1 (01:55:11):
Maybe more of a third rounder. I'm thinking, okay, we'll see, Okay,
we'll see. We'll see how the draft board breaks down.
You know, James might swoop in and take it all
away from me.
Speaker 5 (01:55:19):
I heard James isn't in the league, right, Yeah, James,
I'm not in the league. You guys want to you
get to know. He's like duo, a team you can
you can be part owners, co managers about I.
Speaker 2 (01:55:28):
Feel like I'm do with enough football during the season.
The thought of me trying to change a lineup every
week is.
Speaker 3 (01:55:33):
Just before time. That causes anxiety.
Speaker 5 (01:55:36):
Joe, I left the Kickers slot open.
Speaker 4 (01:55:39):
James, get in there.
Speaker 1 (01:55:40):
I'm gonna name my team James Boyd's proxy. Oh like that. Okay,
but early this morning, I heard a clip that I
had to share with the rest of y'all. We all
know and love ed Orgeron when he speaks right, maybe
you understand what he says, maybe you don't, but that's
always kind of fun.
Speaker 10 (01:55:55):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:55:56):
He was on Pardon My Take, and he told an
untold story about how they were able to sway Joe
Burrow to become a Louisiana State University Tiger. Listen along
if you can.
Speaker 9 (01:56:08):
We made a connection with his brother, Dan, and Dan
talked a lot more than Joe, so I called them
me and Derek called then the next day, I said, Damn, are.
Speaker 1 (01:56:18):
You talking to Joe?
Speaker 9 (01:56:19):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, your phone.
Speaker 1 (01:56:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:56:21):
I said, you gotta be my voice now, okay, I said,
then where do you think?
Speaker 10 (01:56:26):
Come on?
Speaker 6 (01:56:27):
Dan?
Speaker 4 (01:56:27):
LSU or Cincinnati didn't even cloth?
Speaker 9 (01:56:29):
Then gives me the soul?
Speaker 4 (01:56:31):
Well, coach, I said, Dan, f that what do you want?
Speaker 13 (01:56:35):
You love your brother? I said, damn, do you hey?
Grab down there, son, I said, grab down there in
your pan? You got too of him? Then I'm doing
I'm grabbing him, Coach.
Speaker 4 (01:56:46):
I got him. I got him, I said, Dan, squeeze
him sudden, God, I squeez Call your.
Speaker 1 (01:56:51):
Brother, tell him to come down the shoot.
Speaker 4 (01:56:53):
You got two of them down, then bar.
Speaker 3 (01:56:57):
We tell the story.
Speaker 4 (01:56:58):
He was like, I got him.
Speaker 9 (01:57:02):
He actually did it, man, and that was our voice. Now,
Joe said that wasn't his deciding, But I wasn't you know.
I was a recruit going to tell you you need him,
and he's not gonna talk to nobody. Somebody gonna talk
to him. Right, you gotta compete. If you're not talking
with the other guys, somebody's competing. You gotta find the
back door man. But man water story and then just
(01:57:25):
off the Ballott on Thursday, I gotta call Joe Burrow
said coach.
Speaker 4 (01:57:30):
Unbelieved about that.
Speaker 7 (01:57:31):
I get it there all right, now, hey, lead out
that way a way I kind of go.
Speaker 4 (01:57:39):
We go to I got a boot called that my back.
Speaker 5 (01:57:41):
That is who I hear every time I hear ed
Ordern talkers, Farmer fran from water Boy.
Speaker 1 (01:57:46):
Do you guys have an idea of what actually happened
in the Joe Burrow recruiting story.
Speaker 4 (01:57:50):
Now, something about grabbing you know what?
Speaker 3 (01:57:53):
I have no idea what that was.
Speaker 1 (01:57:56):
That's classic at order and right there that was a
press conference. Every Monday morning.
Speaker 4 (01:58:00):
I heard his praising Marcus Freeman and his appearance on there,
who wouldn't been to practice a few times, so he
loves him and says he runs some hard practices, so
he's showing to be have I told you I can't
wait for Notre Dame to start up.
Speaker 1 (01:58:12):
I've noticed that out today.
Speaker 4 (01:58:15):
Week from Sunday, No other Dame Miami down there.
Speaker 3 (01:58:18):
Are you nervous at all?
Speaker 4 (01:58:19):
Orange out, very nervous. Yes, they're literally starting.
Speaker 5 (01:58:23):
Starting to sweat under his hits right now.
Speaker 4 (01:58:26):
You asked that question.
Speaker 3 (01:58:27):
The question didn't even get like hung in the air
at all.
Speaker 4 (01:58:30):
The starting quarterback has either played one of them has
played four snaps against Perdue last year, which doesn't even
count as real football wow, or the other one played
four snaps against pretty last year. You know it's bad
when two dudes got in the game against one team.
That is true, Yeah, it was it was time to
get both the dudes who never play in the game.
Speaker 1 (01:58:48):
Third quarter for one, fourth quarter for another.
Speaker 4 (01:58:49):
Well it was only four snaps each. So you know, honestly,
in all seriousness, Notre Dame has a top ten You
know how many times are we going to see this
in college football moving forward? You have a top ten
team and yet the projected starting quarterback, either of them,
Kenny Minshe or CJ. Carr, has really never played in
(01:59:10):
college football. Like, I think that's going to be pretty rare.
I think you're going, I mean, people are just going
to live in the portal era. And it's not like
I mean, CJ. Carr was somewhat highly ranked, but Minshi
was definitely not like this decorated five stars. So but yeah,
I love their defense, love their running backs, best running
(01:59:30):
back group in the entire college football.
Speaker 1 (01:59:32):
And we'll talk more about college football than the next
week or two as well. Check out what's going on
down in Bloomington. Also, coach it hasn't coached. He tells you, no,
he hasn't coached since lsu.
Speaker 5 (01:59:44):
Ya.
Speaker 1 (01:59:45):
But I was going to point.
Speaker 4 (01:59:46):
Out that was the pregame speech before the National.
Speaker 1 (01:59:48):
Tests right there, and checking the AP top twenty five,
you're fighting. Irish are number six in the preseason Bowl,
Indiana is number twenty, Illinois in there at number twelve,
James number two.
Speaker 2 (02:00:00):
Yeah, are you gonna be going down in the rankings
when they lose to Illinois.
Speaker 1 (02:00:05):
That's a big game for the Big Ten, don't you think.
Speaker 2 (02:00:07):
Yeah, it's a big game for IU and the big
loss coming for them too.
Speaker 4 (02:00:11):
It's a huge game for Illinois.
Speaker 3 (02:00:13):
Yeah, but it'll be a huge Windn't believe that Indiana
after their tune up games to get ready for you guys.
Speaker 2 (02:00:20):
Mind you, I can't naven a player on Illinois team
right now, but I'll change that within the next week
or so.
Speaker 1 (02:00:24):
But you got You've got the degree certificate from Yeah,
I got the.
Speaker 3 (02:00:27):
Degree and I got the dead as well. So I
am tied today.
Speaker 1 (02:00:30):
Indiana's gonna go in off of impressive performances. I'm sure
against old dominion Kennesas State and Indiana State.
Speaker 4 (02:00:38):
What do you guys care about? You care more Belichick
college football? You care more about arch Manning college football?
Any storyline that you Indiana doing.
Speaker 1 (02:00:47):
How many people in Indianapolis are just gonna be salivating
if arch Manning justus.
Speaker 4 (02:00:52):
Also, the question is arch Maning gonna come out?
Speaker 1 (02:00:54):
He says to me, going back, he says he's going
to stay.
Speaker 2 (02:00:57):
Well, I think it was like his father came out
and they had like that one some kind of magazine
profile he did where he said he will not be
entering the draft after this year. But I am intrigued
by Arch Manning just because the name, the pressure, the
stage you're on, like you're at a university where you're
expected to win and so and he's good. I mean
sometimes you get the last name not as good as
(02:01:18):
their father was or their uncle was or whatever.
Speaker 3 (02:01:19):
But he was a highly rated player. He's a starter.
Speaker 2 (02:01:23):
Now he's keep you one at Texas, which means you're
big man on campus and will you be able to produce?
Speaker 1 (02:01:27):
That's a good point, Kevin. Can you imagine more pressure
on a young man's shoulders than not only being a
starter for the first time, full time starter for the
first time, and your team is preseason number one and
your last name is Manning.
Speaker 4 (02:01:40):
Yeah, I mean until his cousin Marshall cracks college football,
it'll probably be the most pressure that's on him. Yeah.
Can you imagine, like Marshall Manning suiting enough for Tennessee
in five years, six year?
Speaker 3 (02:01:51):
It's a lot of pressure. Honestly.
Speaker 2 (02:01:53):
The only one probably compared to is maybe Brian James,
but again he wasn't to that level of player in
college right now.
Speaker 4 (02:02:00):
You know, we talked about Charlie Woods a few weeks ago,
Tiger's son, Like I don't think Charlie. Charlie Woods is
not at the Arch Manning level. If I had have compared,
I think Charlie Woods is you know, certainly whatever, top
one hundred recruit.
Speaker 2 (02:02:12):
But you can't gimmick your way into being the number
one quarterback for Texas.
Speaker 3 (02:02:15):
No, No, you gotta be able to play.
Speaker 4 (02:02:17):
No, And you know what credit I mean, archers really
waited to turn a lot of people with that resume
are not saying it. Texas.
Speaker 1 (02:02:24):
They're going to get to get the money somewhere else,
and we're they're going to get playing times, right, But yeah,
you get both that way. So yeah, it'll be interesting
to see how college football breaks up. But we're We're
coming up on Week zero, gentlemen, I'm ready. And to
your point, can you imagine ESPN may melt down over
Belichick versus Frank Reich in that in that game Belichick
(02:02:46):
Frank Reich for sure, Well, anything with Belichick, they're melting
down already over the off season. He also mentioned yesterday,
not that anybody here really cares all that much, he
will not be doing the radio coaches show this year.
He's going to have Michael Lombardi do that. He's already
bout out of that.
Speaker 3 (02:03:03):
I do not miss covering college football. I did not
miss that. I used to hate that, like the Wednesday night,
Tuesday Night, you got to sit by the radar. Wa yeah,
hear what? They got to stand and write something up.
Speaker 2 (02:03:12):
That's Mike Woodson right well until he skipped out the
last part of the season last year.
Speaker 4 (02:03:19):
So ct asking. Is Kevin even going to be able
to watch his Irish lose when his pink eye flares up?
Speaker 1 (02:03:26):
So sue the restroom.
Speaker 4 (02:03:28):
Apparently the eyes look good to me.
Speaker 1 (02:03:31):
So how many? How many bathroom trips during the game?
Speaker 4 (02:03:33):
No pinkuy whatsoever? Here? They need to get the last
laugh on this one.
Speaker 5 (02:03:38):
You've been urinating a lot. He've been going in poor
to Potti is quite a bit. You got some issues.
Text line is worried about annual physical taking care of
as I pros stayed a little earlier.
Speaker 1 (02:03:46):
In the speaking of the text line. One more text
line contest this morning for an entry into the Fan
Morning show Fantasy Football League. What's the word we're looking
for here?
Speaker 5 (02:03:56):
Mark name one of the two teams playing in Ireland
on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (02:04:02):
That's a good one.
Speaker 5 (02:04:03):
College football, college football.
Speaker 1 (02:04:04):
And it's not Notre Dame this year. I'll give you
that hint, wasn't it Super ups Namer?
Speaker 5 (02:04:10):
Yes, Name one of the two teams playing in the
college football opener on Saturday in Dublin and you'll get
a spot three one, seven, two, three, nine, ten seventy
text us the answer one of the two gets in.
Speaker 1 (02:04:22):
Of course, the big news here today is we've been
talking about all morning long. What will Shane Stiken have
to say on the quarterback situation. I'm sure he'll be
asked a question or two about zab and Howard. What
are some of the other things you're interested in hearing
other than quarterback?
Speaker 2 (02:04:36):
James, I was gonna say, probably nothing other than the quarterback.
Let me start there with the passer, but in all seriousness,
probably just what's the plan, you know, when it comes
to fifty three man roster, when you got so many
guys who are going ir or banged up, just a
little bit more clarity on what you might think you
have to do to just prepare yourself not only for
week one, but beyond week one, because you've got a
(02:04:58):
few guys who were going to depend on would thinking
justin Walling and Hunter Woller, the rookie is now being
out for the season, and what does that mean for
the rest of your group.
Speaker 1 (02:05:05):
Any other position battles that you're interested in getting information
on from him today?
Speaker 4 (02:05:09):
Well, I mean, honestly attendants at practice, So probably be
something to James's point. I know the press conference will
be dominated by other headlines, but you know there still
is eleven twelve names injury wise that can impact roster cuts,
or not only impact roster cuts, but could be huge
for week one. So exactly how that situation plays out
with both sides of the ball. Probably a handful of
(02:05:30):
guys on each that are dealing with current injuries.
Speaker 1 (02:05:34):
All right, So two nine seventy the number to text
in on if you want to give a spot. It's
already gone. It's already gone.
Speaker 5 (02:05:40):
kJ from Brownsburg has locked it up. He was the
first one to respond with Kansas state, which is the
correct answer. Kansas State takes on Iowa State noon bias here, No,
I swear on my children's lives. He was the first
one to text, I believe you believe you will believe
me that is actually fact fact.
Speaker 1 (02:06:00):
All right, Jay Queer will come your way from noon
to three today. We'll hopefully have clarity on the Cults
quarterback situation. Maybe we'll hear an update on Sophie Cunningham's
injured knee at that point in time. Stephanie White schedule
to be on the show I believe today and then
JMV will break it all down for you from three
to six. We'll be back bright and early tomorrow morning
at seven am. Thanks for joining us this morning on
ninety three five and one oh seven five The Fan
