Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome into the Fan Morning Show with Kevin Bowen, James Boyd.
I'm jeff Rickard once again. Caleb Zuver. Back in the
building is Mark Dyked and Bass in the Monday night
football win for the Chicago Bears. I suppose Caleb, you've
been doing this a couple of days. Now, how was
the alarm clock treating you so far? Now that it's Wednesday,
all right.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
I am gonna have a slight admission to you guys. So,
I know we talked about it as everybody's getting in
the studio this morning, but yesterday there it was on
the board that I was going to sleep through my alarm.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
I'll admit it on these airwaves. It happened.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
My roommate, thankfully, was kind of getting around in the
morning and he ended up kind of waking me up
a little best love it. Thanked him for that. But
now today I was like, there's no way I'm gonna
wake up before my alarm this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Well, you're here and you've been here every day and
we appreciate that you've been doing a fantastic job. Good morning,
James Boyd and Kevin, and I'm just curious I missed
this and James. I guess I'll start with you. I
missed Ashton Doolan getting in for one play on defense
the other day against the Cardinals. I completely didn't see that.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah, saw it, and I will trol him this week
and tell him he was unsuccessful because they picked up
a third and seventeen I believe on that play. So
if for as much as we enjoyed the wrinkle and
the versatility of Ashton Dulan, I got to ask him
today when I see him in the locker room, how
come you didn't get home for the sack of high
standers for the first ad on the team.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
And Kevin Bowen. I guess this is something Lewenn and
Rimo had kind of tossed around in his head last week,
and apparently if Kyler Murray had played, Ashton Doolan was
going to have not a significant but a decent role
on defense. Just kind of spying on him, right, Yeah,
I had to laugh.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I was thinking, boy, Jacoby Verssett, we're now spying against him.
That might be the first time an NFL team has
looked at Jacoby Weresett in that light in their lives.
But yes, the Colts put that in for a Kyler
Murray wrinkle, and you know, lou An Rimo explained it yesterday.
It made sense. Ashton Doolan is an exceptional gunner, a
great tackler, and the thought was, could you kind of

(01:55):
stunt your defensive line to kind of get Kyler Murray
or whoever the quarterback would been over to a also stunting
Ashton Dolans. Basically, he lined up kind of as a detackle,
if you will, standing up as a blitzer. On third down,
came around the edge of running back, picked him up
very nicely, and that was the third and seventeen play,
one of the several long down in distances the Arizona

(02:17):
Cardinals did convert. So I can imagine Michael Pittman Junior
and a slew of other offensive players might be knocking
on Luian Arumo's door, like, wait, you're gonna blitz Ashton Dolan.
I'm available.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
I don't know how much of want to play defense
and getting Michael wants to play He might Michael Pittman Jr.
He seems like the kind of guy that just is
in love with the Oklahoma drill. Right.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
I have said it a thousand times. I apologize and
in a week like this and on an anniversary like today.
It just makes me want to puke that I say
this out loud. But there is no usc pretty boy
in Michael Pittman Jr. Did you see him get into
it with the Arizona guy and then he showed it
last night and when they had the sounds of the
game with Daniel Joe owns Michael Pittman Jr. Wrestling with

(03:02):
an Arizona defender, Daniel Jones very lately. Get up pet.
I was waiting for Daniel Jones to get down there
with him, you know, kind of tag team right on
the ground. But I think that's Michael Pittman Junior's territory.

Speaker 5 (03:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Also, speaking at Daniel Jones and the micd up, I
saw one cut up the whole thing where it was
like a minute and a half long of him doing
his business and taking care of work and not saying.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
A word James.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
Yeah, that's pretty much how the interviews go. But I
don't know.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
He must have said something though, because the Cold signed
another quarterback yesterday and correct me if I say his
last name wrong, is it Brett Ripian Ripping? Brett Ripping
And apparently he was also in Minnesota last year with
Daniel Jones. So that's the overlap there. I was searching
for it. I missed it myself. Shout out to one
of the commenters on the Athletic when I posted my story,

(03:46):
it was like, Hey, just briefly they were teammates. I
would imagine they've at least had some conversations, obviously about football,
and when his name came up, I'm I'm assuming they
at least reached out to Daniel and say, hey, well
you know about this guy.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, so Brett Repping the third quarterback Minnesota last year,
so darnold. I think Nick Mullins was their backup. Ripping
was the emergency, and then Daniel Jones when he got
cut by the Giants, he joined Minnesota's practice squad. So yeah,
we're just still awaiting kind of fish award on the
Brett Rippons signing. But now the question has become this,
who's your backup for Sunday? Does Brett Rippon get up

(04:20):
to speed enough. I assume they would elevate him later
in the week like they do with usually one to
two guys from the practice squad. You can do that
three times during a season, so at some point with
Anthony Richardson out for at least four games, they're gonna
have to, I would assume make a fifty three man
roster move with Brett Rippin. But yeah, not a ton
on the resume, to be honest, and you know, not

(04:42):
really a lot of Colts overlap here. Four starts in
his career, undrafted out of Boise State, Yes, Rippin. Mark
Rippin is his uncle who was a cult for a
very very brief period back in two thousand and one
behind Peyton Manning there. So for our older audience, they
probably remember the name Ripping probably quite well, honestly.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yeah, Mark was a successful in the playoffs for the
Washington back then outside of Indianapolis.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Yeh'bout of retirement, right, So with the Colts, I think.

Speaker 6 (05:10):
Yeah, did not play for three years and it's beant
his last year with the Colts.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
All right. So a lot to talk about with the
Colts as they get ready for a big game coming
up with the Chargers. And just kind of reading some
of the national publications and websites yesterday, guys and James,
you probably see a little bit more of this With
the athletic. A lot of folks like what the Colts
have done. They've been impressed by Daniel Jones. They've been
impressed by the fact that the Colts keep finding ways
to win. They've been impressed by the fact that they've

(05:36):
scored points every week and lead the league in scoring.
But a lot of them are like, hey, Colts are
doing great. We're excited. This is impressive, but let's see
what they do on the road against what is thought
to be a pretty good Chargers team this weekend, James,
is that kind of what you're getting from your compatriots
at the Athletic and some other folks.

Speaker 6 (05:53):
Compatriots quite the word, But I would say.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
Not really.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
I would I think a lot of people are believing
in the Colts at this point in time, and it's
just can you sustain it?

Speaker 6 (06:06):
Like you said, it is a bigger test against the Chargers.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
But I think the margin of victory, which you pointed
out the last couple of shows that we've done, Jeff,
that really speaks to how well they've played. They have
the highest lead point deferential in the league and it's
not really close. I want to say they're in like
the seventies and the next closest might be in the forties.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (06:23):
So yeah, they're you know, rolling in that degree.

Speaker 4 (06:26):
So yeah, the search of schedule could be better, I guess,
but they're also whooping up on the teams are supposed to.
And then they won a game last week under like
we laid out some pretty bizarre circumstances. You lose you know,
your backup quarterback right before the game and yeah, he
wasn't supposed to play anyways, but then you also lost
your starting cornerback an hour before the game. You have
to kind of pivot from there and find a way

(06:47):
to win. So talking to Alex Pierce after that game,
he told me, hey, this is more like what the
NFL is used to, or what it feels like where
it's not always going to be us winning by twenty points.
And he was like, you know what, I actually haven't
felt game like that since I was in college, you know,
where we blue teams out to that degree.

Speaker 6 (07:04):
So in a way I want to tell.

Speaker 4 (07:05):
Them, are you telling me we're too spoiled all of
a sudden, you know, know what you guys are doing,
You've set the bar too high for yourselves. But no,
I do think it'll be a test coming up out
there in LA and justin Herbert sha appear fear in anybody.

Speaker 6 (07:17):
He's a very talented quarterback.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Yeah, I'm just curious, Kevin, as you look around the
league and see what the Colts are doing and see
what other teams are doing, and we've seen something like
the Super Bowl champion Eagles are struggling right now. Kansas
City struggled out of the gate, but they seem to
be finding their rhythm a little bit now through the
first six weeks of the season. Outside of the Colts,
what has kind of impressed you or given you like
made a mark on you through this first six weeks
of the NFL season so far?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Positively? Positively, it's easily Tampa Bay. I mean, with what
Baker Mayfield has had to deal with injury wise around
him Offensively, I get to the NFC South. It's definitely
not a division that we talk too much about, but
I would say their level of play would be the
one that kind of stands out in the AFC. Of course, negatively,
if the playoffs started today, it'd be both Kansas City

(07:59):
and Baltimore right are both outside of it, and Buffalo
wouldn't be hosting a home playoff game. You know, it
would be New England. You imagine saying to somebody at
the start of the year, Hey, we're going to get
to Week seven and out of Buffalo, Baltimore, Kansas City,
only one will be in the playoffs, and that team
won't even be leading their division. So those will probably
be a couple of things to stand out.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yeah, I mean, of course, the Lions have looked a
little vulnerable. Everybody thought they were going to be the
power coming out of the NFC. No one would have
predicted that the Cults are on top of the AFC
at this point in time. I guess the one team
out there that has struggled with injuries. But even though
they lost at Tampa Bay Man, if they get fully healthy,
I still with Kyle Shanahan and Christian McCaffrey. If he

(08:43):
stays healthy, they get the quarterback back. They're getting Juwan
Jennings back this week. At some point, they'll get George
Kittle back in the next few weeks. San Francisco just
feels scary alone. Yeah, they did lose a line.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Back with Fred Warner is a huge, huge injury. The
Cults will see him Monday Night Football coming up later
this year.

Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yes, so unpredictability, James, is that a fair thing to
say about this the NFL season so far?

Speaker 6 (09:04):
That's how the NFL is every year, so yeah, I
would agree.

Speaker 4 (09:06):
I think that's why they honestly draw in the ratings,
besides playing once a week. But yeah, every game matters
and every game has that parody aspect to it, which
is what I think other leagues are trying to chase
to a degree.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
All right, coming up at a month, we'll give your
first checkdown of the morning for those of you who
are just joining us. We'll get your caught up date
down on everything you need to know. Heading into the
back half of the week. Pacers play one more preseason game.
We'll give you the details on that. College basketball gets
rolling this weekend. It's all straight ahead in ninety three
five and one o seven to five The.

Speaker 7 (09:34):
Fan, The Morning Checkdown on ninety three five and one
oh seven five The Fan.

Speaker 1 (09:45):
Good morning texts for turnings on wherever you are. However
you're listening, we appreciate it. Here at ninety three five
and one oh seven to five The Fan. Let's start
with the Indianapolis Colts. They had an off day for
the players yesterday, but the front office was very busy.
Kevin Bowen, what were the Colts up to?

Speaker 3 (10:00):
Yeah, so wait an official war. But reports out there
that Brett Rippan will join. I assume the practice squad
they do have an open spot there. And now that
makes three healthy quarterbacks on this team. Once you know
the week plays out with Riley Leonard and Brett Rippin,
exactly how they'll slot the second in the third quarterback
into those spots for Sunday in LA. Again, not a

(10:22):
lot of history or notable play I think from Brett
Rippin eleven games played. I think its four career starts
in the league. Actually, Daniel Jones has already thrown more
passes as a cult when Brett Rippon is thrown in
his NFL career. But yes, there's a quarterback move, and
not to investment rich no draft pick, of course. Ripping

(10:42):
most recently was the backup to Jake Browning with the Bengals,
so he got promoted there once Joe Burrow got hurt,
and then once they traded for Joe Flacco, they said,
see you.

Speaker 1 (10:52):
I do remember him playing for the Broncos a couple
of years ago, James, he was two and one as
a starter there, so he was somewhat effective there. But
as many people have been pointing out and we talked
about yesterday, the market was pretty thin, was it.

Speaker 4 (11:04):
Not, Yeah, Supertian, I like Kevin put out a list
of quarterbacks they could have went after. They actually worked
out four quarterbacks yesterday, and I guess all four of
them did not show enough for the Colts to make
a move on the guys they actually brought in. They
were like, you know what, we saw you guys in person,
and we rather go with somebody else we haven't tried
out for the team.

Speaker 6 (11:25):
So interesting move there.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
And I'm curious to hear from Shane Steiken as to
what ultimately put Brett Ripping over the hump when it
comes to bringing him into the team. And like Kevin said,
for what I was able to gather courting to sources,
Shane will have the final saund who is QB two
going into the LA game against the Chargers.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
Speaking of the the Chargers, that game will be four
h five on Sunday afternoon, Colts five and one, Chargers
four and two. Very key game for positioning and head
to head in the AFC as both teams start to
think about playoffs. Already just a third of the way
through the season. That's nice for the Colts to have
to consider right now. Meanwhile, the rest of NFL news,

(12:03):
I don't know if you guys saw this. David Bell,
the former Purdue and Warren Central star, has retired at
the age of twenty four. He, apparently a social media post,
suffered a non football injury that he says would risk
his life if he continued to play, and so he
regretfully has to step away after parts of three seasons
with the Cleveland Browns. Kevin, I think we all remember

(12:25):
just how dynamic he was. I saw him some highlights
of him when he was in high school, and of
course watched him at Purdue when he was just fantastic.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Yeah, I don't think it's hyperbably say one of the
greater two sport athletes we've seen, certainly of recent history.
I mean what he did at Warren Central. Honestly, probably
more people, especially as Southern Indiana, might remember him more
for his basketball play and hitting the bank shot over
Romeo Langford and what was one of the more iconic
playoff games that the state has seen in quite some time.

(12:55):
Obviously decorated career at Purdue. I still remember the Iowa
game where he just torched Iowa, a huge win for Purdue.
And yeah, you feel awful for him obviously. I mean,
you know when you throw out life and limb and
all of that. Reading his post was pretty jarring, and
you know he had a hip injury. I want to
say it was last year. Yeah, that really limited him

(13:18):
in twenty twenty four and honestly, probably got drafted of
the wrong franchise, you know, even when he was healthy.
I mean, if you're wide out and you get drafted
the Cleveland Browns, yeah, you're probably thinking of yourself. Can
we redo that? So yeah, just awful. Hope everything is
good for him and living out whatever life is on
the horizon forum. But yeah, retired at the age of
twenty four.

Speaker 4 (13:38):
Yeah, I would expect more from that. This is from
Mary Kacabin, who covers the Browns for Cleveland dot Com,
and she wrote Browns receiver David Bell retired on Tuesday
because of a surgical complication that would have made it
life starting for him to play football again. His lawyer,
Brad Son, told Cleveland dot Com on Tuesday the complication
occurred during an off season surgery by an independent surgeon

(14:00):
was not related to his located hip that Kevin reference.
It's led it to something else. They haven't disclosed day yet.
So yeah, when I saw that he tagged his a
lawyer in the post. When he shared it, I thought,
we're going to hear more about this so very unfortunate situation.
But again, a lot of legally is probably still to
get through.

Speaker 5 (14:16):
All right.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Spained of college football, his alma mater, Purdue will play
at Northwestern on Saturday. That one starts at three. Number three.
Indiana will be hosting Michigan State at three thirty. Akron
plays at ball State this week. Kevin, there's a little
bit of a rivalry game going on up in the
northern part of the state this weekend. You want to
elaborate on that.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah, And I'm starting to get nervous.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
You started getting nervous when the schedule came out.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
I was in my car to Dad. I thought, you
know what, let's dial up a little Notre Dame USC
preview and I'm listening to it. And the preview starts
off with October fifteenth. Is that today's date? Is that correct?

Speaker 1 (14:52):
October fifteenth?

Speaker 3 (14:53):
That is literally just branded into my brain because twenty
years ago today, what happened?

Speaker 1 (15:01):
I'm not quite remembering. What did happen?

Speaker 5 (15:04):
Go for it?

Speaker 3 (15:04):
Caleb's hands raised.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
Caleb, Caleb, what happened twenty years ago today? Be you star?

Speaker 3 (15:09):
The bush push?

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Oh my gosh, really I thought that was later in
the season for some reason.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
Gosh, Caleb, I love you and I hate you all
at the same time. Brother ah Man the bush bush
What a deep sigh? Ziba Calsi's punt return Ja Patrick,
I will say nine to Dwayne Jarrett. Even before the
bush push, there are so many plays just ingrained into
my brain. The zero's going out on the field, Charlie

(15:37):
Weisse somehow making it to midfield with triple zeros and
then having to go back to the sidelines, and the
rest is history.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
I will say this as a non partisan guy. It
was one of the most exciting college football games I've
ever seen.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
No thank you Jeff for stating that it all right. Also,
I'm glad you enjoyed it, just like you cackled at
Tiger Woods's back.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
So I was tackling the predictability of something that happened.
Kevin Is for a reporter, loves to take things out
of context in the morning, which is which.

Speaker 6 (16:04):
Is why I love him. On the show, Caleb, we
can play the audio.

Speaker 8 (16:07):
I would like I know him that I talked to
Caleb and if you would like to also this week, Missouri,
you've got Mark Sanchez's representation here from a lawyer standpoint.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
UH.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
Indiana State hosts at Dayton. Marion has homecoming this week
versus the University of Saint Francis, and Indianapolis will be
hosting Lincoln on Saturday afternoon at two pm. Major League
Baseball last night, Milwaukee Brewers, No, they just got shut
down by the Dodgers. Starting pitching in the first two
games last night, no different. In fact, Yoshinobu Yamamoto complete game,

(16:44):
one run contest, three hits aloud. Uh he was terrific,
only one walk, seven strikeouts to Oscar Hernandez and Max
Munsey each homer, and the Dodgers beat the Brewers five
to one. They get two wins on the road. They
go back to Los Angele was per Game three tomorrow.
Later on tonight it'll be Game three of the American
League Championship Series. The Mariners leading the Blue Jays two

(17:07):
games to none. That win starts at eight eight. Pitching, pitching,
pitching in the postseason. Kevin Bowen and road teams, Right, Yeah,
road teams in pitch. That's why pitching. They always had
one of the great cliches in baseball. James, momentum in
baseball is only as good as your starting pitcher.

Speaker 6 (17:22):
The next day, shout out to the Dodgers. You spin
to win. Sounds like Oregon football will also win on
to lose.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
But yeah, I know people always complain about like pay
rolls in baseball. I, as someone who not a big
baseball guy, don't care.

Speaker 6 (17:34):
Hey to win.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Pacers are off until Friday night. They'll play their final
preseason game on the road against the San Antonio Spurs.
And how about this you can comment on this one.
You follow racing quite a bit. Rena's Vick, who'd been
a free agent, leaves Dale Coyn Racing joins Hunkos Hollinger
racing for the upcoming season.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
That's a big deal for them. Yeah, and honestly, Rena's
had a really nice year last year. Dale Coyne, I know,
Alex Pelo's season is pretty much the only thing we
talk about. Or Penske's awful season is probably the two
storylines most talked about this past year. But Renas I
think he had six or seven top tens with dale Coin,
so really nice here for him, and now he will
slide over to Honkos here as we, I think are

(18:13):
pretty much done with the musical chairs in Indy car
for twenty twenty six.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
All right, James Kevin, anything else you guys want to
throw in before we move on past the twentieth anniversary
of the game.

Speaker 4 (18:25):
I think that is all of it. I mean, yeah, look,
big news today is just get a look at Brett
rippin air practice and figuring out who's going to be
QB two for the Chargers game. And yeah, his dad,
no damn s our uncle played for the Colts as well,
as we talked about earlier.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
All right, coming up in just a moment, the Colts
are raising eyebrows all over the country. Right now, we'll
talk a little bit more about that. Things happening in
the NBA, and we'll catch up today and everything else
you need to know all morning long. We'll have a
good time doing it. Let us know what you're thinking
and feeling on the fan text line at two three, nine,

Speaker 1 (19:41):
Never get old, that'll never get old. I was thinking
about you this morning when you commented on the anniversary
of the Toush Push this morning, Bush Push, Bush Push. Yes,
thank you very much. Toush Push, Bush Push, Bush Push
the Reggie Bush push. There's a big difference for you.
There isn't there there is?

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Yeah, I wish it was the Toushbush.

Speaker 1 (19:59):
James, you will appreciate this because you've grown fond of
my youngest son. If you met a couple of times now, Grant.
I'll be taking Grant to Los Angeles. We're going to
do a tour of USC on Friday. How about that,
Kevin Bowen.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
I hope you guys have a horrific time.

Speaker 6 (20:14):
I hope you get there safe.

Speaker 1 (20:15):
Look on Caleb's face when you said that just now.

Speaker 2 (20:18):
You're not going to Sofi Sunday to watch Saturday Night.

Speaker 1 (20:21):
We'll be back Saturday night. So looking forward to it.
Taking a trip with my sixteen year old who's not
ready to get his driver's license too. I am so psyched,
and you guys are nowhere near any of this. But
within the next thirty days, both of my sons teenagers,
will have their driver's license and I will be free
to enjoy my afternoons.

Speaker 6 (20:42):
Questions about this?

Speaker 4 (20:42):
So, how quickly do you give your kids the keys
as soon as they passed the driver's test? Because my
dad going to a still schol like, eh, I need
you to, you know, because I honestly think that people
pass driving tests who can't drive a lick. So my
dad was like, before I hand you the keys of
this car that I worked very very hard to get,
I'm gonna need you to be in a few more
corners is safely before I just throw you the keys.

(21:04):
I think my first time I drove by myself anywhere,
it might have been like the barbershop or something.

Speaker 6 (21:08):
I feel like I was such an adult.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Well, I don't know what it was like for you, Kevin.
But now in Indiana you have to have forty hours
of daytime driving logged with a parent, you have to
have ten hours of nighttime driving. And you also now
basically do your driver's test through professional driving instructors who
you have a couple of appointments with and then their
last appointment. They're the ones that certify whether or not

(21:32):
you get your license or not. So it's fairly comprehensive
in this day.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
So the question I have today to follow up is
do the hours log with the parents need to be
verified at all?

Speaker 3 (21:42):
Because it sounds very shady.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
I guarantee you, Kevin.

Speaker 4 (21:45):
When Jesse Boyd was teaching James Boyd how to drive,
we lied about all those hours. He was like, all right,
at about fifteen, you know, you know where the break
is and shout out to Pops. His best advice he
ever gave me was don't hit anything that's not moving,
and that has worked out very well, for me.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
I'll not forget. My dad thought drivers had for years
and when he would come home at night and my
mom be like, hey, how was you know driver's head today,
And it was always a good day when he said, yeah,
we only had one kid turned left on red, And
like when I was, you know, thirteen fourteen, it didn't
don't get with me. And then now I go through
these intersections crazy, you know whatever, eighty second in Allisonville

(22:24):
or you know, some of these major ones, and I'm like,
holy bleep, turning left on red. Oh my gosh, can imagine.
So the other day you're grateful for all of our
driver instructors out there.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
The other day he's heading east on the four sixty
five and we're getting ready to get off a Keystone.
And now Grant, who's over thirty hours in the daytime
and over five hours at night, he starts commenting on
other drivers. Now, James, oh, Dad, look at that guy
right there. What's he doing?

Speaker 4 (22:51):
I must say, I'm not really like that as a driver.
I'm pretty calm, Honestly, I barely. I feel like I
only ever use my horn if you're going to hit
my car. Other than that, I mean, if you get
cut off whatever. I'm just like people are a little
too you know, crazy.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
You ever throw a digit in the air, No, I
really have it.

Speaker 4 (23:09):
I'm prot a pretty calm driver, honestly, and that's probably
because if you leave when you're supposed to, you get
places when you're supposed to get there. So yeah, I
feel like the race comes from dangam ared late and
this person make me more late.

Speaker 1 (23:21):
It's The Fan Morning Show, ninety three five, one oh
seventy five The Fan. Big news for the Colts today
is they signed another quarterback yesterday. Is still on the
practice squad at this point in time. But for those
just joining us, Brett Rippin's twenty nine years old. He's
been around the league for a while. I think he's
made what five, four or five career starts. What more
can you tell us about him, Kevin? For those just
joining us.

Speaker 3 (23:41):
Yeah, so most recently it was in Cincinnati. They've obviously
had their quarterback issues this season. So he spent last
year with Minnesota. There was a two month overlap there
with Daniel Jones. Ironically enough, I guess if you were
going to make out the Vikings depth chart when they
were there, Brett Rippon was the third stringer. Daniel Jones
the fourth stringer Daniel Jones on the practice squad in Minnesota.

(24:02):
He then was cut by the Vikings ripping that is,
at the end of training camp this year, joined Cincinnati's
practice squad. Joe Burrow gets a toe injury, they bring
him up to be Jake Browning's backup. He only logged
three snaps as Jake Browning's backup, meaningless snaps of a
forty eight to ten blowout ironically against the Vikings earlier

(24:23):
this year, and then when they traded for Flacco eight
days ago, he got the scissors. James. You mentioned this earlier.
He was not among the lists of the four quarterback
tryouts no that the Colts had yesterday. Any of those
names stand out to you? Brylan reached out to me
and said on Twitter, these names remind me more of

(24:45):
utility infielders for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Speaker 5 (24:49):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (24:50):
Jeff Driscoll, Jaren Hall, Tanner Mordecai and Kyle Trask would
be those four names.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
Yeah, the crazy, I mean they none of them hosted
out to me. Their resumes are what they are. I mean,
most of it is usually a handful of games you've started,
you've thrown more interceptions than touchdowns, which is the same
way with Brett Rippin. I think he's want to say,
he's thrown four touchdown passes and nine interceptions in eleven
career games, four starts. Overall, he's two and two as
a starter. But yeah, none of those guys who stood

(25:18):
out to me. But the unique one is Kyle Trask.
I mean, this is a guy who was a second
round pick in twenty twenty one, and I want to
say he has like never started in the NFL. Now,
granted he was behind Tom Brady and I leave Baker
Mayfield for years down there in Tampa Bay, so exactly
gotta get on the field behind those guys. But yeah,
I mean this is a talented guy, at least coming
out of college who is now sort of like this

(25:39):
journeyman just trying to latch onto a team.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
Well, one thing we know in the NFL, you never
want your backup to take the field. There's maybe two
or three every year that you're like, oh, okay, we
can survive this.

Speaker 4 (25:49):
Yeah, but second round picks usually Yeah, I mean he
driving down the second round a quarterback.

Speaker 6 (25:53):
He's supposed to play well.

Speaker 3 (25:54):
You don't want your backup to play. I was looking
up the other day, I want to say, and I
just did the last three years. I believe of all
the playoff teams in the NFL over the last three years,
I want to say, the numbers north of forty percent
had to rely on multiple quarterbacks to get through a season.
So you know, nearly half of the playoff teams in
the last three years had to have at least two quarterbacks.

(26:16):
You remember Cleveland few years ago, Remember when they finally
got to Flacco. I mean they had like four different
quarterbacks start and still made the playoffs. Shane Siken with
the Eagles both years Jalen Hurts didn't start every single
game for him, so you know he's had to deal
with that. And you know, James, you knows full well.
Daniel Jones has had injury history.

Speaker 4 (26:35):
So yes, four of his first six seasons before coming
to Indianapolis, he's missed at least multiple games due to injury.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
Now, if I'm Riley Leonard, I kind of look at
this and think, Okay, this is good. Brett Rippan is
not an eye popping resume. Brett Rippan has not been
the backup for a team very often in his career.
He's mostly been the third yeah quarterback in his career.
So this is not something to where the Colts went
out and we debated this yesterday. Would they spend a
draft pick? Will they try and trade for a knowing

(27:04):
Anthony Richardson is out for at least a month? The
Colts elected not to, and now we see how the
week plays out. I would guess they just want to
see how Brett Rippon can absorb the game plan, the playbook.
You know, he's mainly been kind of in the Sean
McVeigh tree, if you will, with Zach Taylor in Cincinnati,
Kevin O'Connell of Minnesota, so you know how much overlap

(27:27):
is there with the Colts playbook. And then we'll get
to whatever Friday Saturday, and we'll see how they want
to divide it up. I assume all three quarterbacks will
address but they'll have to make a decision on who's
the backup and who's the emergency. And again, just to
clarify for everybody out there, the NFL changed this rule
a few years ago. Your third quarterback has to be
deemed the third quarterback, and that guy can only play

(27:51):
if injuries occurred to the starter and the backup. You
can't have your third quarterback be whatever Ashton Doolan and
use him in wildcat or something.

Speaker 6 (28:01):
Yeah, yeah, can't do that.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
You literally have to only have him in that position
to play, and so far Raley Leonard has been that until,
of course Sunday when Anthony Richardson got hurt.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
Well, you hope that everything goes okay, but really it's
the offensive line that kept him pretty clean. Other than
him kind of putting his nose in other people when
he's running with the football, he's he's fared pretty well.

Speaker 4 (28:22):
James Daniel Jones, Yeah that is, oh absolutely yeah. I
did ask Shane after the game if Daniel's three yard
touchdown run was designed, and he looked at me like
I was crazy, So but I thought, you, actually, if
you go back at the play, I wasn't necessarily sure
because when he bends the corner, there's a couple of

(28:42):
receivers out there blocking for him, and so it kind
of gives you the option, I guess, to run if
that's blocked up, or to throw it. And listening to
the micd up yesterday, Alec Pierce went over to DJ
and sold him, Hey, you didn't think he you know,
wanted to throw that one.

Speaker 6 (28:55):
He's like, I didn't see you whatever.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
So we saw a little bit of personality there from
Daniel Jones. Like Kevin pointed out earlier in today's show,
I got a kick out of Michael Pittman Junior getting
into a tussle there at the foot of Daniel Jones.
But also I thought Dan, because that's who he is
when he gets into the scrums. I thought Dan stood
up for his guy a little bit, got you know,
got involved, got a little shoven match going there. So

(29:19):
there is some toughness to him, and it is kind
of cool to see the guy at least enjoy football again.
I know he talked about, you know, how how tough
it was. I believe it was on the Was It
Andrew Whitworth and Ryan Fitzpatrick podcast last week where he
talked about how hard it was sometimes driving back from
the stadium when he was a New York Giant and
you know, dealing with the pressure there, the losses, not

(29:41):
having success and you know, supposed to be the franchise
guy and it just didn't work out that way. And
now I wrote this in a story actually yesterday about
you know, possible quarterback signings. The first time in my
story was the coach needs a new quarterback, but not
for the main guy. Like he's been balling. And I
feel like every week that passes, we're asking the question
of should they extend him? And that question gets a

(30:02):
little bit louder with every week that he plays go football.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Anthony Richardson, Obviously he's going to be on the shelf
for a little while now. But if Daniel Jones continues
this pace, he's the quarterback of the future for the
Indianapolis Colts. What now for Anthony Richardson? Do he in
his camp ask for another opportunity somewhere else? Do they
just kind of keep plugging away here? Like to me,
this is fascinating. This is a guy who just a

(30:27):
couple of years ago was a first round pick in
the top five And what's his trajectory at this point
in time?

Speaker 3 (30:34):
You know, I prefaced in the nine o'clock hour yesterday.
I don't think we're there yet, but it is a
thought that's crossed my mind in the last forty eight hours.
Has Anthony Richardson put on a Colt jersey for the
last time again? I don't think we're there, but it
is a thought if whatever this injury lasts, I don't
know till Thanksgiving and the Colts get to Thanksgiving, they're like,

(30:56):
you know what, Daniel Jones is playing good football. We
like Brett Rippon, we like Riley Leonard. Let's just roll
with these three. Maybe that is how they'll handle it.
Maybe it's not. Maybe you know, Richardson will be back
in a month or so and he'll get back right
to being the backup quarterback. But my best guess would
at the end of the season, yes, Anthona Richardson in

(31:18):
his camp and would like to go somewhere else, and
that's what happens. So again, he's under contract for one
more year through twenty twenty six. The Colts have that
team option that in all likelihood they will decline, of course,
for twenty twenty seven. But that would be my guess.

Speaker 1 (31:32):
Yeah, And it still feels to me and I'm old
school this way. I think we press these these top
chosen quarterbacks in the upper part of the first round.
I think we're in such a hurry to have them
make a difference because of contracts and how much money
they're making and how it can help the team. Like
for every Jade and Daniels that you see that plays
well out of the gate, there's probably five or six

(31:55):
guys that just they're not ready for the NFL yet.
I saw a story yesterday games and maybe you guys
did two that the last four number one overall selections
at quarterback their coaches were fired within two seasons. Just
some guys just aren't ready. Not that they can't be,
but some guys just aren't ready right away, James, and

(32:17):
we want to make them ready right now. And I
don't know that that's necessarily the way to go.

Speaker 4 (32:22):
Yeah, but I think the exception when Anthony is that
he didn't play football hardly at all, and so he
was like the anomaly of all anomalies that took a
huge swing on him. They bet on traits and physical
gifts in all of the above over experience, and it
backfire tremendously. So I think that's one of the biggest
things when you look at why he possibly hasn't worked out,

(32:42):
is he hasn't played football enough. I mean, this is
a guy who I want to say he only started
maybe one or two years when he was in high school,
only started one year at Florida and then obviously got
benched pretty early in his career in the NFL. So
he needs reps and he just hasn't had an opportunity
to get them. And to your point, Jeff, when you

(33:02):
get to the NFL, and I've talked to a few
people behind the scenes about this and just their perspective
on development in the NFL, but it's not a developmental league.
You can get better, certainly, and I think that is
part of the plan you draft any young player, but
if your baseline isn't where it's supposed to be, it's
hard to catch up. And I think Anthony's baseline in hindsight,

(33:24):
was never really where was supposed to be. And then
on top of that the injuries. I mean, the guy's
been hurt for most of his career unfortunately, and well
I can't say most, I'll say he's been hurt for
a significant amount of his career so far. And then
you have this latest injury that takes you out for
at least a month. So unfortunate for him, but again

(33:45):
talking to people behind the scenes, very fortunate that this
injury wasn't more serious than what it was, and he
like lose an eye or something like that.

Speaker 6 (33:51):
So very scary scene for him.

Speaker 4 (33:53):
With that again, a piece of the whatever he had
the band attached to breaking off and hitting him in
the So again, like I said yesterday on the show,
imagine someone standing fifty feet away from you and then
firing a fastball at your face. That's basically what happened
with him when he had his band attached to whatever
in the locker room and that broke and that piece

(34:14):
of that flew back of him in the face.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
I'd forgotten that jj Watt is now calling games for CBS.
You know, usually I'm really only watching the Colts game
that's that week, But yeah, that'll be the call team
coming up on Sunday, Iron Eagle, jj Watt the Colts
do like his second team on CBS. So how do
you know you're starting to get a little bit more
national attention? Iron Eagle's calling your game. So jj Watt,

(34:38):
have you guys seen what Jeff maybe you have you
seen jj Watt do any games this year? Is he
any good?

Speaker 1 (34:43):
I've said, Yeah, he's jj Watt. You saw him on
the set. I think a little bit last year or
even when he was done playing football in the playoffs,
he'd be on the set. He's well spoken, he obviously
knows what he's talking about. I think he's done a
nice job so far.

Speaker 3 (34:56):
So Colt's a one and a half point underdog with
the LA Chargers coming up on Sunday non quarterback news, Obviously,
where are you at from a Kenny Moore standpoint? I
get the feeling mood Award's gonna miss sometime. We'll see
how long that's the feeling. I guess, yeah.

Speaker 4 (35:11):
I mean, if you look at what happens with concussion
is typically unfortunately, so he got injured before the game,
but you essentially treat it like it's if he were
injured in the game. So he missed the game already
because it happened an hour before kickoff. But then if
you look at it like he got hurt in the game,
so to speak, typically players miss at least one game
after that. And keep in mind, like you said, Kevin,

(35:32):
this is his I believe, second concussion in six weeks,
and so that is very concerning. Obviously, cornerback depth well documented.
We've talked about it a lot with the Chargers specifically,
and we'll see if they get Quinton Johnson back one
of their better whiteouts. They are the only team in
the NFL with three wideouts north of three hundred yards
this year. So that's Keenan Allen still getting done and

(35:54):
Lad McConkey, who made the play of the game last week.
So they are a very balanced wide receiver groups. So
your depth at corner again, this is you know, the
most balance of any wide out group in the NFL
that you're going to see on Sunday. So those would
be a couple of things to watch. But the Chargers
do have real warts and that's an offensive tackle. They

(36:15):
are incredibly banged up and their run defense has been awful,
so opportunities there. Obviously the Colts neither d line to
show up, which hasn't happened I think to the level
that you needed to, and Jonathan Taylor should be foaming
at the mouth, and what this opportunity looks like on
paper against the Chargers run defense that ranks near the
bottom of the NFL.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
Yeah, I see a lot of comments on the text
line this morning, and we appreciate all of them about,
you know, potential moves that the Colts could make and
maybe Anthony Richardson's part of that and some of them
are saying, like, for example, Joe says, send Ar Mitchell
and Pay to Cincinnati for Hendrickson, or Ar and Mitchell
to Las Vegas for Crosby. I think sometimes we overvalue
the parts and pieces that we have and what other

(36:58):
teams James might even be interesting stood if it came
to trading. And I don't think Vegas is even considering
a trade for Max Crosby at this point in time.

Speaker 4 (37:06):
If they were Ar and Ady Mitchell, you hang up
the phone and you tell him lose my number. Like,
I love you, guys, but let's be realistic here.

Speaker 3 (37:16):
Video game trades.

Speaker 4 (37:17):
Yeah, I'm like, this is not going to be successful
in the trade machine, even if you try to do
this online. So no, first of all, Max Crosby isn't
going anywhere like that, He's not coming here. You'd have to,
you know, then take on a huge, massive contract that
he just signed and he.

Speaker 3 (37:32):
Seems like top player in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (37:34):
Yeah, like he's not going anywhere. Sag with Miles Garrett.
I get that he's frustrated with losing, but he literally
signed up for that when they told him, Remember he
wanted out, and then they gave him a big bag
of money, and he was like, you know what, it
ain't too bad living in Cleveland.

Speaker 6 (37:46):
So he figured it out. He'll be fine as far
as train. He interesting.

Speaker 4 (37:49):
I think he's the most realistic option, so to speak.
But it also depends on what the Bengals want to do.
Do they if they suffer a couple more losses, are
they becoming you know? There is a trade deadline to
kind of, you know, prepare for a high draft pick
and try to recoup whatever they can to build another
team around Joe Burrow next season.

Speaker 6 (38:07):
So we'll see all that unfolds.

Speaker 4 (38:09):
But yeah, some of these people are just acting like,
you know, you could just offer up, you know, anything
and get you know something.

Speaker 6 (38:16):
That's not how trades work.

Speaker 3 (38:17):
Speaking of freak injuries, Did I see this correctly? And
maybe you guys saw this Purdue football Barry Odam squad.
One of their players didn't play against Minnesota because this
dog bit him.

Speaker 1 (38:29):
Well, I didn't see that.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
I could have sworn I saw this, and maybe my
mind was, you know not, maybe I was.

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Reading the googling this.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
Now.

Speaker 6 (38:37):
I hope you didn't get like.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
And I think it was a big dude. I think
it was like a three hundred pounder dog bit them.
If I'm not mistaken, I think in.

Speaker 4 (38:45):
The foot Yeah here it is Sports Illustrated perdue defensive
second missus game due to dog bite. Man, remind me
never to get a dog. I'm like, my goodness, did.

Speaker 6 (38:57):
You train them at all? My that's actually kind of scary.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
You imagine walking around campus with that dog. Oh boy,
you talk about the sidewalks clearing for you real quick.

Speaker 4 (39:06):
Saying no, walking around chimps with that Her dog is
biting a three hundred pounder that causes the player not
to play in the game.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
That's a hell of a bite.

Speaker 1 (39:14):
It depends on probably.

Speaker 3 (39:17):
Say yeah, tell that to Mike Tyson.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
Boy, it gives dogs a bad name. Most dogs don't bite.

Speaker 6 (39:25):
You know.

Speaker 4 (39:25):
And I'll give you a Dorothy Boyd classic. My grandmother
when I was walking with her throughout the streets of Chicago,
because she never learned how to drive. She was always
about public transportation, never really had to learn how to
drop them in Chicago. But whenever we saw a dog
walking home and uh Chatham in Chicago, and she was
just like, we're gonna go to the other side of
the street.

Speaker 6 (39:45):
And I'm like, every time. Grandma.

Speaker 4 (39:47):
She's like everybody says their dog don't bite until they do,
and they bite you. So shout out to grandma. I
have not been bitten by a dog, probably because of her.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
Maybe the pretty football team needs to take a listen.

Speaker 6 (39:58):
That's I honestly feel bad. That's scared.

Speaker 3 (40:01):
They've got Northwestern right in Northwestern? Are they still in
that little stadium on the lake.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
I think they're rebuilding. I think they're building a new
stadium at this point in time.

Speaker 3 (40:08):
So they still playing that little I think right now?

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Yes, until they got a cool environment.

Speaker 3 (40:13):
Frankly, I think Northwestern football deserves that.

Speaker 1 (40:15):
I think I called a game there once. Penn State
long time ago, like at the very last year of
Joe Paterno.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
Oh boy, you are dialing them back.

Speaker 1 (40:23):
Yeah, it's been a while.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
I you four touchdown favorite? Am I seeing that? Right
over Michigan State, they should be well. Talking about Michigan
State falling off a cliff in the last decade.

Speaker 1 (40:33):
They've had problems. They had some pretty good head coaches
for a while. They just have never quite gotten that
right at a certain point. And that's just so important.
As we've seen here in Indiana. I mean you get
the right guy, you're good for forever. You get the
wrong person, you can set the program back. And then
what happens that guy gets fired after two and a
half for three seasons, they bring in a new guy,
and if that guy doesn't work, now you're starting over

(40:55):
again in two or three seasons. And if you're not
really careful and hire a right guy at that point
in time to the cycle just keeps repeating itself. And
I think that's where Michigan State is right now.

Speaker 4 (41:04):
Yes, And speaking of coaches, I would say that as
much as we've given some praise to Daniel Jones, where
does Shane Stiken.

Speaker 6 (41:10):
Fall in the early coach of the year candidacy and
things like that?

Speaker 3 (41:14):
Oh, he's got to be at the top of the list.

Speaker 6 (41:16):
Yeah, we'll have a chance to perhaps store that question.

Speaker 4 (41:18):
That's Stephen Holder here in a few minutes as he
joins us in the eight o'clock hour.

Speaker 1 (41:21):
All right, In fact, he's gonna do that coming up
in just a few minutes here, we'll talk more about
the Colts and why they went and got Brett Rippon
as a backup quarterback yesterday and as opposed to other
players that were out there and available, we'll do that.
We'll also talk a little bit more about the upcoming
college and NBA seasons for basketball as we continue next
to ninety three five and one oh seven five the Fan.

Speaker 7 (41:43):
You were listening to about Fan Morning Show on Sports
Radio ninety three to five and one oh seven Fan.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
Good Morning, eight o' clocker's welcome into the Fan Morning Show.
Kevin Bowen, James Boyd, I'm jeff Rickard, Caleb Zoover over
there making everything happen on on the board and the
ones and two's doing a great job in relief of
Mark dyked In. This week, we've been talking a lot
about potential trades that the Colts could maybe look at
trade everybody likes to talk about that. I saw something
on CBO Sports that said, how about Bradley Chubb from

(42:10):
the Miami Dolphins, a guy that can come in and
doesn't have to play every single down, but has proven
in the past that he can provide a little juice
from the edge. Something like that. Kevin would be interested.

Speaker 3 (42:21):
We'll see. I mean again, I think you can talk
yourself into defensive end. I think you could talk yourself
into linebacker. You can talk yourself into corner. But that
defensive line room is easily the most underwhelming bunch considering
all the investments into that group, and they're gonna be
a huge storyline coming up on Sunday against the Chargers
O line that has really banged up at Dolphensive Tackle.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
One guy we love having under contract and no trade
in sight. Our guy, Stephen Holder, who joined us now
to talk Colts football from ESPN dot com on the
Payless Liquors Hotline. Good morning, Steven. You're not going anywhere.
You're like Kurt Signette. You're staying put right.

Speaker 5 (42:58):
Well, hey, listen, I think that you always got to listen.
You know, you always got to listen to offer.

Speaker 6 (43:04):
I'm a businessman, okay's high a mercenary.

Speaker 5 (43:07):
I'm not making that commitment.

Speaker 1 (43:09):
No, Well, welcome back into the Fan Morning Show. We
always appreciate you being here. Everybody's talking about could should
the Colts make any kind of move, especially on defense
before the trade deadline comes up in a couple of weeks.
Where do you think Chris Ballard's appetite is for something
like that?

Speaker 5 (43:27):
I don't think he ever has a huge appetite for
giving picks away because it's just not it's just not
his way.

Speaker 6 (43:35):
But you will give a few of a way, Stephen.

Speaker 4 (43:37):
You know, you don't want to be sitting in that
room with me next spring as a waiting for him
and trade back inevitably and we're all like groaning as
he does.

Speaker 5 (43:43):
So true, that's true. Well, I mean, listen, if he
doesn't keep all those picks, how's he going to trade
down three times, you know and get more? Look, I
don't know I think that he I think that this
might be a unique situation though, right, I mean Chris Ballard,
so he's never been you know one, you know, so

(44:06):
I don't know that the past necessarily uh will we'll dictate,
you know, what they do here, because again this is
this is different. So I do think they're underwe by
this defense, this defensive front. If they're not, I want
to know why not, because I certainly am. I think

(44:27):
they're way too invested in this this front for it
not to be producing. But at the same time, that
may preclude them from you know, going further and taking
on more salary there, you know, that's that's the reality
that they have to think about too. Are very heavily
invested there. It goes more money.

Speaker 3 (44:45):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (44:46):
I don't know. And then on the back end of
the defense. I mean, honestly, I think they just have
to weather the storm, or at least I think they can't.
They think they can weather the storm. You know. It's
it's gone on along than I think they expected, though,
and it's been bad. This is a tough week for sure,
this matchup with the Chargers.

Speaker 3 (45:07):
Steven Holder from ESPN where you can find his work,
he joins us every Wednesday. We always appreciate of Steven's
time all over our airwaves. Steven, you were certainly one
of the first and had a ton of details in
regarding what exactly happened with Anthony Richardson for those that
maybe have missed it. Could you just kind of paint
a picture of best you know what occurred Sunday pregame

(45:30):
with him.

Speaker 5 (45:32):
Yeah, I think you know. You guys, those of us
who are around the team, we were familiar with them
using these stretching bands. They've been doing this for years.
I mean I remember Andrew Lucky using them. That was
the first time I recall seeing them. Anyway, They're they're
pretty thick elastic bands. They used to get loose because
you know, they put a lot of mileage on those

(45:54):
arms every day. And as I understand it, he had
his attached to a pole of some kind in the
locker room. And this is not something that's just unique
to Anthony Richardson. They all do it. Just so happened
he's the one that had this misfortune and in the
process of stretching with using that band, that pole snapped

(46:19):
and it impacted him in the face, obviously pretty forcefully,
and he's got this broken orbitable orbital bone. So as
I understand it, and just talking to other players, I mean,
it was quite a scene. He was down the ground.
I was told it almost you know, knocked him out.
It was so forceful, you know, it's like getting punched

(46:41):
in punched in the face practically. So just a really
chaotic situation man. And I mean you talk about misfortune,
I mean a bad break, no pun intended. I mean,
this is this is awful. So yeah, it was. It
was definitely it sounded comical at first, certainly, I agree,
how do you hurt yourself with this band? Well that's

(47:02):
not what happened. It was this poll that really hit
him very hard and took him out.

Speaker 4 (47:08):
Frankly, honestly, if I'm Richardson, I'm looking around at the
equipment staff or really anybody related to the Colts and saying, Hi,
y'all gonna compensate me in my face because it sounds
like he did with anybody else.

Speaker 6 (47:22):
But I'm actually not joking.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
I mean, I want to laugh, but I'm looking at
this like, wait a second, do you have some recourse
you could take, possibly because it sounds like he did anything,
didn't do anything wrong, ended up on the wrong side
of obviously the incident. But to pivot to what has
transpired since then, a cold sign Brett Rippen resume is
what it is. Stephen wasn't all that great, But just

(47:45):
your thoughts on bringing in him and him possibly being
QB two or QB three depending on what chan second
decides here over the next week.

Speaker 5 (47:55):
I mean my reaction is pray for Daniel Jones. Okay,
let's just hope Daniel Jones stays upright. I mean, you know,
I'm not saying that there's any like imminent fear that
he's going to be hurt, but I mean, look, I
mean it could happen on any play. He could twist
his ankle, he could take a bad step. Anything could happen, right, concussion, Right,

(48:18):
I mean that happens all the time, right, I mean,
so things do happen. So this is a theory, Okay,
just a theory. I think what might be happening here
is the cults are saying, all right, Richardson's going to
be out. I guess maybe the four weeks or so
is maybe what they're banking on. And if Daniel Jones

(48:38):
has an end game injury in one of the two
backup quarterbacks plays, they figure it out. If he has
a longer term injury, you have to do something more
substantial than this. That's what I would say if someone
has to play multiple games. Look, I know a lot
of you fans out there. You love Riley Leonard. I
love Riley Leonard. He's great. I think he's a worker.

(49:00):
I think he has a potential future. He's not ready, Okay,
I'm telling you fans, he's not ready. And I think
the Colts understand that. I'm not saying they wouldn't play
him in a pinch, in a backup role off the bench,
but they are not actively trying to play Bodie Leonard.
I think with you guys, am I am I off base?

Speaker 9 (49:19):
Here?

Speaker 5 (49:19):
Am I missing something? Guys? You saw training camp right right?

Speaker 3 (49:22):
I would agree, especially once teams started to actually, like,
let's say they needed Leonard for a couple of weeks steven,
once they actually schemed and said, hey, spy Leonard, make
him a pocket passer. You know again, anybody that watched
Notre Dame's playoff run, I mean Riley Leonard hardly threw
any consequential passes until they were down a million against
Ohio State. So yes, you know, his life of running

(49:44):
like he did on the opening drive against Ohio State,
probably not going to last in the NFL. Which but
which is fin Like, I mean they drafted him to be,
you know, developmental projects. Sounds like he's horrific, but like
that was some of the thought there. I think sometimes
you get into dat three quarterback picks. Some guys are
like whatever, Curtis Rourke from Indiana, more of a finished project,

(50:05):
and then other guys are a little bit more Riley
Leonard battle some injuries, played in multiple colleges. You know,
you feel like there's a skill set there that you
want to tap into. And I think that was some
of the colts thinking there.

Speaker 5 (50:17):
Yeah, I think that's exactly right. So, yeah, that's how
I see it. We'll see, though. I mean, I think
I think they would be in a tough spot if
there was a multi week injury to Daniel Jones right now.
So I don't think this way of thinking would continue
if that happened. That's my theory.

Speaker 3 (50:34):
One thing going back to Richardson for a second again,
Steven Holder from ESPN with the year Paylstickers hotline, it's
not your impression that this is a season ending injury, correct, I.

Speaker 5 (50:45):
Don't think so. It doesn't sound like that. I mean
the initially there was some uncertainty and possibility I think
was discussed, but it sounds now and particularly after this
move they made, I'm I'm starting to think that they
settled on it being a shorter term absence. The last

(51:07):
I heard, which was Monday or yeah, late Monday, I
think there was the thinking was multiple weeks, but the
NA season ending. So that's a big range. But that's
kind of what I know so far.

Speaker 1 (51:22):
Stephen Holder, ESPN dot Com. I'm just curious. We've seen
a lot of praise for Daniel Jones and what he's
doing with a great receiving corps that's done a nice job.
And obviously Tyler Warren into the mix, and Jonathan Taylor
has just been fantastic. Where do we put the role
of Shane Steichen in all of this offensive success that
is leading the league in scoring by a ways at

(51:42):
this point in time.

Speaker 5 (51:44):
No, I mean, he is the He's the conductor of
it all. I mean, like if this were if they
were making an album, he's the executive producer and he's
the guy making it all come together. It doesn't happen
without that guy. You know, he's the SCORSESEI I guess,
I don't know, something like that, But to use a
movie analogy, I think Shane Stykeen is brilliant. I do.

(52:08):
I don't say it enough. Shang Styking is brilliant, There's
no question about that. I mean, how many guys have
you seen wide open this year? Just? Why the hell? Okay,
they're good players, I think a lot of their receivers,
but I mean, come on, they're wide open that There's
a reason for that, and it's because of what he

(52:30):
is putting together in the game playing process. And that
is Jim Bob Cooter as well, the offensive coordinator who
he really does rely on a lot. So I'm telling
you he has shaying being he he has this understanding
of how to attack defenses at a high level that

(52:50):
I don't think is typical. All right. There are a
lot of good coaches out there, but they don't all
I think, see the game at the level that Shane
Styken does. And I remember when he got hired. I
remember Frank Reich Okay telling me, and he had history
with him. He knows he said, he said he is
a potential offensive genius. That's what he told me. I mean,

(53:15):
that says it, all right, And I think a lot
of Frank w Reich's opinions. So I think you're starting to
see that. And people around the league have told me
the same thing, like this guy high level offensive offensive mind.
That's like the consistent theme you get when you talk
to people. So there's no doubt the cults are. I
think you're starting to see that now with a quarterback

(53:36):
of Daniel Jones caliber in terms of his understanding of
the game, he has a quarterback who understands the game,
you know, at a level that the coach does, and
that's helping it all come together.

Speaker 4 (53:49):
Well, Steven I must say, now you got me going
down the rabbit hole little bit. I should probably ask Shane.
I don't know if I should on the record off there,
like who you listened to before the game, you know,
as the producer or as the music. I'm picturing him
like what dmx X gonna give it to you? When
he's dolling up like his his playbooks for the week.
It's just knowing that he's gonna get guys wide open
for touchdowns, so I can.

Speaker 5 (54:12):
Probably like it seems weird. I don't know, he's weird.
Might be like the Star Wars theme or something.

Speaker 3 (54:18):
I don't know, Man, I.

Speaker 6 (54:19):
Feel like it's gonna be a holder.

Speaker 4 (54:21):
I feel like it's got to be one end or
the other of the spectrum where it's like he's sitting
there in silence like a serial killer but no music
at all, or he's vibing out to DMX and he's
very rock and roll for his team. So last one
I Got for you is And this is kind of
a I guess a serious question, but with Lady Mitchell
officially in active last week, do you think the Colts

(54:42):
have taken the right approach with him after the blunder
in l a against the Rams and really some of
the mental mistakes he's made throughout the early stages of
his career.

Speaker 5 (54:54):
I mean it's brutal. There's a question about that, right,
I mean, although I look, I have criticized this kid
as much as anybody, but you know that being said,
look at it's like as a parent, which James knows
nothing about. Look, you can screw up, right, right, yeah,
take your time, takes time. Your kid can screw up
and really deserve like severe punishment. But it's not fun

(55:17):
punishing them, right, It's not fun to see them, you know,
sit in the corner and be pissed and miserable that
it's not fun. And I think that's that's what I
think about when I see Saint Stychen right now, like
he I don't think he's enjoying this, you know, but
I think he felt like it had to be done.
Oh it's really tough, Okay, no question about it. But

(55:38):
I think you just laid it out. I mean, this
isn't the only thing. If this were the first time
we were talking about ad Mitchell in this manner, I
might feel differently, but it is not. And it's not
just this play It's not just negating the Jonathan Taylor
touchdown later in that game. It's not even just the
Denver play last season where he was I guess picked

(56:01):
off for lack of a better word, on the trick play.
It's not just those things. It is a consistent scene
with him, the lack of execution, the lack of finishing plays,
the lack of just playing with a seriousness. And I
think they had to do this, or they felt they
had to do this. And I will say this, I
bet he never does it again. That's for sure. Right,

(56:24):
he's going to go line and give that ball to
the referee if he ever gets there.

Speaker 4 (56:29):
Till he does, I think he'll just run with it,
like all the way back to the locker room.

Speaker 6 (56:34):
I mean, celebration there for Ady Mitchell.

Speaker 4 (56:37):
So yeah, I'm just very curious about that. But that's
all I had as far as the wide receiver room goes.

Speaker 1 (56:44):
All right, Steve, thanks so much for being here. We
appreciate it. We will see you soon in a press
box near us.

Speaker 5 (56:49):
All Right, you guys, got it.

Speaker 6 (56:51):
Hey, pick up the phone the first time when my
boy Caleb calls. Okay, just just let's get that straight too.
You know I'll see you like D and D on.

Speaker 9 (56:59):
D D.

Speaker 4 (57:01):
Mind you Stevenholders like six too, And I'm like, yeah,
it's not gonna fly, James, or I'm punching above my weight.
Glass there I'll see in a couple hours.

Speaker 1 (57:08):
He already hung up on us.

Speaker 6 (57:09):
Man, there we go. Well, I probably deserved it.

Speaker 1 (57:12):
It's Fan Morning Show with Kevin Bowen, James Boyd, Caleb Zoom.

Speaker 6 (57:15):
Oh, I got your back. Brother.

Speaker 1 (57:17):
Caleb's arguing with his own dad on the text line
right now.

Speaker 3 (57:19):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Well Mo chimes in. I just want
to let the bow alone that.

Speaker 2 (57:25):
I can see his opinions that he might not share
with me. You know, he probably likes to come off
smart with you guys, but I have to check him
every now and then.

Speaker 1 (57:34):
Wow, I need to see some of his mer Now,
at what point, Kevin and you certainly don't have this
with your kids. They're younger, and I've started a pinch
with my oldest. They're starting to like, all of a sudden,
try to check us. What's that all about? Well, I mean,
what's that all about?

Speaker 4 (57:51):
I go home and a certain my dominance whenever I
see my pops. Now, I'll tell him every time I
see it. Hey, look, I tell him and my mom,
if you wanted me to act better, you should have
did that a couple of years ago. It's too late now,
so be glad that I know.

Speaker 3 (58:04):
Put hand James Boyd sounds pretty darn exhausting.

Speaker 4 (58:07):
Oh it is, I'm sure it is. But they made
me this way. You gotta understand, you know, serious is
my house is just comedy. Whenever we go home, it's
it's people just doing silly stuff all the time. My
dad will go over to my sister and just stand
over her for no reason, and vice versa. It's just
that over and over again. So every now and then, yea,
I got to remind Pops, hey man, you little watched.

Speaker 1 (58:27):
Now, next time they're in town, I want I want
Dad on the show. Can we do that?

Speaker 6 (58:32):
Oh no, he ain't come on the show. No no.

Speaker 4 (58:34):
He told me he doesn't want to do any media ever.
He's proud of me, but no.

Speaker 1 (58:38):
Put out a statement. There will be no media. Yeah. Nah.

Speaker 4 (58:41):
He always tells me like if he was ever like
the father of an athlete or whatever, he would not
want to be known at all, which sounds like a
great life.

Speaker 3 (58:47):
Honestly. The ad Mitchell thing you asked Steven there. I
think it's interesting, James, because they've certainly punished Dadie Mitchell.
I get that the storylines have been all over the
place the last couple weeks of the cult, so it's
gotten a little loss in the shuffle, but uh, he
was a healthy and active for the first time in
his NFL life on Sunday. Yeah, and given how much

(59:08):
Alex Pierce played and how much Michael Pittman Junior played,
I'm curious if this is gonna be how it is
moving forward. Yahton Dulan only played one offense exap on Sunday,
So you know, again, when previously they have sprinkled eighty
and whatever five snaps a half something like that, you know,
basically have said, hey, we've got a wide out. We

(59:29):
like his skill set, you know, can we throw him
in against the third or fourth corner and kind of
lull you to sleep. Ady Mitchell runs out on the field.
You're like, wait, who's this dude, and you know we're
going to throw the ball to him. I mean they
throw a deep shot with Patrick Surtan on Adie Mitchell
in week two. They clearly have wanted to get the
ball in his hands here this season, you know, I
know Shane, you know, has expressed a little bit more

(59:50):
optimism on where eighty is at this week than maybe
where he was at in previous weeks. But let's say
they have gone a little bit more the punishment scale
that I thought. I thought it'd be one week, but
they took it a step further in week two. So
I don't think we're at a point where, you know,
could he be traded with the trade deadline here in

(01:00:10):
a few weeks. I'm not there. I get that that
conversation would happen around the league anywhere when a second
round pick is a healthy scratch, you know, three weeks
before the trade deadline. I understand why people bring it up.
I don't think I'm in that boat just yet, but
it has certainly been some accountability practiced here. Public accountability,
actionable accountability. From Shane S. Dyking.

Speaker 1 (01:00:31):
All Right, Fan Morning Show, it's time to check things
down and let you know what's happening right here, right.

Speaker 7 (01:00:35):
Now, The Morning Checkdown on ninety twee five and one
oh seven five the Fan.

Speaker 6 (01:00:41):
If you're just joining us.

Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
On your way into work, or maybe you're on your
way home from work. Whatever the case may be. Thanks
for tuning us in. But we've been talking about the
Colt's latest acquisition. Yesterday they tried out a few quarterbacks
and apparently they have made a decision James Boyd on
who they want to fortify their roster with right now.

Speaker 4 (01:00:57):
Yeah, we're still waiting for the official transaction to be filed,
but Brett Rippen is going to join the Colts practice squad,
according to league sources.

Speaker 6 (01:01:06):
And Brett Rippon is a.

Speaker 4 (01:01:08):
Guy who went undrafted out of Boise State in twenty nineteen.
I started at four games in the NFL. He's two
and two and he's thrown four interceptions I'm sorry, four
touchdowns and nine interceptions in eleven games overall.

Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
So not the.

Speaker 4 (01:01:21):
Greatest resume, but at this point in the year, not
one to trade for somebody.

Speaker 6 (01:01:24):
Perhaps it will slim Pickens.

Speaker 1 (01:01:26):
All right. So the Colts have, as I said, four
to fied their quarterback position at this point in time.
Last time we saw this young man, he was with
Cincinnati Bengals once they signed Joe Flacco. He was released
and Kevin and I had said a couple of years ago,
I saw him fill in for the Broncos. He was
two and one, so you know, for a short period
of time if they have to, and hopefully nothing ever
does happen to Daniel Jones. But maybe this isn't the

(01:01:48):
worst thing in the world.

Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
Hasn't thrown a pass since twenty three in the NFL
three snaps for the Bengals earlier this year. Yeah, I mean,
Daniel Jones as a cult has thrown more career passes
than Brett Rippon has, So yeah, I mean there are
varying degrees of resumes that they could have gone with.
I'd say this is one of the lighter ones. Not
a lot of obvious cult connection overlap outside of the

(01:02:10):
Daniel Jones thing in Minnesota. And we'll see how the
week plays out, whether it's Riley Leonard one play away
or Brett Rippon one play away coming up on Sunday,
all right.

Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
Meanwhile, the Indiana Pacers, coming off a loss to the
San Antonio Spurs at home the other night, will be
off for a couple of days before they finish their
preseason action at San Antonio on Friday night. I still
can't get over it because I've watched him a couple
of times, but watching Victor Wembanyama from the Spurs when
he had the tip back dunk where he might have

(01:02:42):
had a two inch vertical leap. It's just crazy to
watch that long, thin build play as effectively and smoothly
as he does. I don't know I'll ever get used
to it, but it's fun to watch.

Speaker 3 (01:02:52):
Yeah. I audibly laugh probably five times on Monday night
watching Victor Webinyama do things on the basketball floor. It
is Yeah, it's whatever third grader against a bunch of
toddlers on a you know, Fisher Prigh school.

Speaker 1 (01:03:04):
Anyway, that's coming away Friday night here on ninety three
five and one O seven to five the fan. Meanwhile,
major League Baseball, they continue the Championship series in both
leagues last night. One game in the NLCS. The Dodgers
get a great pitching performance from Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a complete game.
You don't see those much these days, and they beat
the Brewers by a score of five to one. Allowed

(01:03:27):
just one run, three hits, one walk in seven strikeouts.
He goes backed up by Teoscar Hernandez and Max Munsey
home runs, but they take a two games to none
advantage over the Joel ericson fighting Brewers, and both those
games were in Milwaukee. So James Boyd a guy who's
been converted out of watching playoff baseball. That's how it is.
Pitchers starting pitchers can dominate these series, man.

Speaker 4 (01:03:49):
Yeah, and they've got just studs over there, right, I mean,
you're supposed to have what couple of aces and or
one ace or so to speaking, they have too, So varrettalent.
It's a group that certainly, you know, pass the pay
roll to support him.

Speaker 3 (01:04:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:04:03):
Later on tonight in the American League Championship Series, the
series shifts to Seattle after the Mariners won two games
against the Blue Jays, and it'll be Shane Bieber on
the mound tonight going up against George Kirby for the Mariners.
So pretty good pitcher for the Brewers. They try to
get themselves back in it on the road tonight. That
one starts at eight eight. Arenas vk has left dale

(01:04:26):
Coin Racing and Keviny joins Hunko's Hollinger Racing. Probably the
last big free agent on the market this year, and
an here that we saw another big free agent make
a move too.

Speaker 9 (01:04:35):
Well.

Speaker 3 (01:04:35):
Rena's had a really nice year and I thought last
year he lost in the alex Plow historic season and
Penske's issues on and off the track. I thought Rena's
had a nice year, so good for him and getting
a landing spot, and see if you can try and
build on it all right.

Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
The number three team in the country for college football,
the Indiana Fighting Hoosiers. I'm big on fighting. This morning,
I guess they will be hosting Michigan State three point
thirty pm on Saturday afternoon. Northwestern will be the site
for Purdue's next football game. That one kicks off at three.
Kevin is already nervous and pacing number twenty, USC number
thirteen Notre Dame under the lights, just inside the dome,

(01:05:13):
seven thirty pm.

Speaker 3 (01:05:14):
Number one offense in all of college football, the USC
Trojans this year. They dominated Michigan. Last week Notre Dame
lost their center, Ashton Craig Lawrence Berg product here from
down by the River, so Mark Chris Farley reference in there.
So yes, I think the winner slots himself into a

(01:05:34):
playoff position as long as they take care business. The
loser probably done. Notre Dame definitely done. USC can maybe
wiggle their way into the big ten mix, but yeah,
ton at stake in what could be the final game
in this rivalry for several years. It sounds like all right.

Speaker 1 (01:05:50):
One other final note for me. US men's national team
manager Mauricio Pocketino said that ac Milan attacker Christian Polisic
sustained a hamstring injury that forced the player to be
substituted in the twenty eighth minute of last night's two
to one US men's national team win over Australia's arguably
the best player for Team USA, and that could be

(01:06:12):
problematic for that moving forward. So I don't know what
that means for them, but at least they got a
win last night in Commerce City, Colorado, which is really
just a suburb of Denver. Last night, anything else you
guys are going to throw in?

Speaker 4 (01:06:23):
We mentioned David Bell and his retirement. That is the
former Warren Central star I believe won to state championship.
I want to say football and basketball, right, and so
he went on to start at Purdue. But he's done
playing football at just the age of twenty four, and
it sounds like there is going to be more that
comes out of this. He had or spoke to Mary
Kay Cabot, his lawyer spoke to Mary Kay cabot Or

(01:06:45):
they were able to corroborate some things, and it sounds
like he had complications due to an independent surgery that
he underwent last year and not related to his dislocated
hip that he had surgery on. So unfortunately, I think
the phrase he used was like if he played football again,
into a risk life and limb. So unfortunately he is
done playing football. But hopefully we'll get some more information

(01:07:06):
there as to why this happened so suddenly and so
soon for a guy who obviously was very, very talented, all.

Speaker 1 (01:07:11):
Right, coming up in a moment. He's been the talk
of college football all season long. Kurt Signetti getting it
done with the Indiana Hoosiers. They'll play Michigan State this Saturday.
We'll talk a little bit more about you know, Indiana's
gonna have to start doing what all teams seem to
do at some point in time, Gardner successful head coach
against other teams trying to poach him. Talk about it
next to ninety three five and one oh seven five

(01:07:32):
The Fan.

Speaker 7 (01:07:35):
As you were listening to a fan morning show on
sports Radio, ninety three to five and one oh seven
five The Fan and we've got.

Speaker 1 (01:07:42):
You covered as always. James Boyd from The Athletic Kevin
Boham from One of seven five tofan dot Com. Both
of them do an excellent job covering the Colts and
go to all the Pacers games and do all the
all the things. And we love sports here in Indianapolis
and love talking about all of it. And what has
been the talk of college football so far this year
is Indiana football and Kurt Signetti. Yeah, Ohio State's the

(01:08:05):
number one team in the country again, and that just
seems to kind of go with the course of events.
You're in, you're out. But everybody, Kevin is talking about
Indiana football. You turn on College Game Day, turn on
Big noon Kickoff, everybody wants to talk about Kurt Signetti.
And now with the firing this past week of James
Franklin at Penn State, everybody like, oh a blue ballood

(01:08:25):
program in Penn State. Would the hot guy Kurt Signetti
who's from Pennsylvania. Is there a chance he would go back?
And we're getting a lot of different opinions from a
lot of different places right now, but I just can't,
for me personally, I can't imagine that he wouldn't want
to stay and continue building what he's building in the
Big Ten where he's getting paid pretty well after an

(01:08:46):
extension last year, and it could be his thing as
opposed to just being another coach in the line of coaches.
I know it's really Joe Paterno, but I don't know. Man,
what are your thoughts now that you've had a couple
of days to think about it.

Speaker 3 (01:08:58):
Yeah, I'll keep on saying what I've said all week long.
I think that last part being the one to turn
IU football into something I think means a ton to
Kurt Signetti and frankly, his ego I think has a
lot to do with it, which I don't want to
sound as negative as maybe it does, Like that's how
he's wired. And you know, right now, you know there's

(01:09:20):
somebody at Indiana University that is in the same sense
with Bob Knight, which is just wild to even think about.
But I think that's how IU fans of view what
Kurt Signetti has done. And yes, you are at the
Big ten level. Of course, in today's landscape, Big ten
and SEC are above the rest. I think that matters.
You know, Maybe whatever he increases his pay even more

(01:09:42):
while his agent does a little flirt and dance with it.
But you know, it seems like the support is there.
I know, Scott Nelson said Ittor earlier this week. You
know they've even met this week about you know, making
sure that complacency is not something that creeps into where
they're at from a football program standpoint, particularly for their
head coach. So I get there are pros still there
for Penn State, but I think the Indiana job and

(01:10:04):
this era of college football is a lot more attractive
than it would have been ten, fifteen, twenty years ago, certainly,
So I would be surprised if Kurtz Scnetti left.

Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
James, I know you've been covering college football for a
while and you've watched it and observed it, and you've
seen what's going on with Indiana here. What are your
thoughts on Kurtz signetty what not only was doing here,
but why would he want to leave here?

Speaker 6 (01:10:27):
Money?

Speaker 4 (01:10:28):
Money always changes things for a lot of people. I
know people always say, oh, they're so loyal, they would
never leave, And I don't think Kurtzingnetti would leave. That's
because every time someone brings this topic up, he could
just go to the ad and say, hey, you know what,
give me a raise and I will stay here and
do all you want me to do to build this
program and continue to do what I'm doing. So it's
always funy peoples bring up loyalty or you know why

(01:10:50):
they would stay somewhere or leave. Money determines a lot
of it. But I will say I think that the
landscape when we're talking about who's the blue blood who
isn't has shifted at least a bit with the introduction
of NIL because we know that I use fan base
will support you, They will invest in you, especially when
you're winning at this rate. I mean, why wouldn't you
want to support coach Signetti's So I don't envision him

(01:11:13):
going anywhere.

Speaker 6 (01:11:14):
He's also an older coach, so.

Speaker 4 (01:11:16):
I'm like, okay, you know, one, how long do you
plan on coaching? And do you want to uproot your
life and move again and start over somewhere else. I'll
be at Penn State is a great program if you're
looking at you know where to I guess start somewhere
or where to continue your career.

Speaker 6 (01:11:31):
But no, I don't envision him leaving it at all.

Speaker 4 (01:11:33):
I think that he takes a lot of pride in
what he's built here, kind of being the underdog story.
And like I said, this is not you know, Indiana States,
this is IU. They got money to you know, pay
you and keep you here, keep you happy and you
keep winning.

Speaker 1 (01:11:47):
Yeah, and they just signed him to an extension last
year with the Big Rays and who says they wouldn't
do it again. But that's how things work.

Speaker 6 (01:11:52):
Let's circle back, double dip.

Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
But the quote back then, and we all know how
quotes work sometime with college football coaches here until they're
not all the time, right. But the co the quote
a year ago was well, you know, honestly, they came
to me Indiana. They were very proactive. And you know
some people say, well, why would you do that when
this one may open, that one may open. You're gonna

(01:12:14):
be a hot commodity, blah blah blah. And the fact
of the matter is we're the emerging superpower in college football?
Why would I leave? And to Kevin's point, I think
he's the kind of guy that is building something.

Speaker 3 (01:12:27):
It's his.

Speaker 1 (01:12:28):
He could do something nobody's ever done it Indiana. He
can make this thing go. He's still got even though
he's a little bit older, He's still got a lot
of years left to be a head football coach. This
could be his thing and a legacy that belongs to
Kurt Signetti.

Speaker 3 (01:12:43):
Yeah, I don't see it at all. I mean, I again,
I get the Penn State fills up that stadium for
games at Memorial Stadium, A probably would not if it
was that sort of capacity. I mean, that to me
is like the only real advantage. I guess Pennsylvania probably
produces a little bit more from a recruiting standpoint than
India does, But still, I think that's not as big

(01:13:03):
of a deal as maybe it once was in this
era of college football. So and maybe we're grass sping
at Straws a little bit too on the ties to
Penn State. I mean, it's not like Pittsburgh's Happy Valley
And where did Kurtzignetti play West Virginia. That's not Penn State.
So you know, Matt Ruhle, there's plenty more connections if

(01:13:23):
you want to play that card, especially with their ad
pat Craft he played there. Uh pack Craft played it,
I you no.

Speaker 1 (01:13:30):
No, I'm talking about Matt Ruhle played at Penny right Yea.

Speaker 3 (01:13:33):
So yeah, I mean, if you want to go down
that path. So, yeah, I don't I get that this
is a conversation that you inevitably have and Penn State
will probably dangle it out there if we've contacted Kurtzignette,
we've contacted Marcus for you know, they're going to do
the whole song and dance to try to appease their
fan base and appease their you know, boosters and all
of that. But I don't know. I just don't look

(01:13:53):
at the Penn State job and maybe the same light
that others do. And maybe I'm wrong on that, but
that's how I would look at them.

Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
Yeah, it kind of feels to me like Penn State
values their program a lot more than the rest of
the country does. At this point. I'm not that it's
a again, it's still a blue blood program, but the
luster seems to have lost some of its shine over
the last job.

Speaker 3 (01:14:15):
But there are others that I think now are closer
to being in that conversation than they once were. Like,
as crazy as it sounds, but like look at Texas
Tech with how much money they're getting. From an nil standpoint,
you know, you want to talk about being in the
state of Texas. You want to talk about easily winning
the Big twelve. You want to talk about incredible funds

(01:14:36):
for their nil? Texas Tech is that right now? And
you would have probably laughed at that, you know, years ago,
thinking what do you mean? Texas Tech plays whatever third
or fourth fiddle in their own state, and now with
you know how much their NIL budget looks like it's
a different story for them.

Speaker 5 (01:14:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:14:53):
I mean, I can tell you the path to curtzin
Netty leaving. It's Penn State is saying we'll give you
one hundred and fifty million dollars and he's like, oh,
you know what, dang, all that loyalty I build, all
that equity I build without you, I gotta leave so
anybody can be had for any price. But I just
think that again, you're already paying a guy fifty million
dollars to leave, and then you got to pay another,
you know, big salary to the next guy. And I

(01:15:16):
think whatever you threw out there, there's certainly gonna be conversations.
If you, like Kevin said in Every bring Up, inevitably
bring up Kurt Signetti. Then all you have to do
if you're a Kursing Nettie's agent and say, hey, I you,
we got some team sniffing around how much do.

Speaker 6 (01:15:30):
You like us? That's just business, and so I do
think that he'll stay.

Speaker 4 (01:15:34):
And I don't envisioned any of that really being like
a big, big talking point outside of what we're doing now,
which is kind of just spitballing about.

Speaker 6 (01:15:40):
The idea, but actual real traction. I just don't see that.

Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
How patient Penn State want to be?

Speaker 6 (01:15:45):
Yeah, almost like you can't be all that patient with
a job that big, that open.

Speaker 3 (01:15:49):
I'm like, because when when is Indiana season gonna end?

Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
Not any time soon where they're playing maybe second third
week of the.

Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
Playoffs, So you're gonna wait till January, That's what I'm saying, right,
don't like I mean, some of these coaches that get
into the playoff with their teams, assuming they're not leaving
their playoff teams. That takes a whole different level of
patients for you. And I get, you know, the portal
window might change and all of that, but still assembly
a staff, Yeah, I don't patients and hires and college athletics,

(01:16:21):
particularly at the top of the food change. Yeah, those
are not words that go together. I did want to
make sure I just to put a bow tie on
this because several people have asked they were hoping that
we could get just a further update on the eighty
Mitchell catch counter. Oh, thank you, just to make sure we,
you know, hold everyone accountable like change Steichen is doing

(01:16:41):
with Ady Mitchell Calener Mark did not leave that audio
for you. Is that correct?

Speaker 2 (01:16:46):
That's correct? So I apologize. Saw the fans out there,
do your bestive shoulder here?

Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
Can we all is it seven? Is that the numbers
so far? Should we count the three here? And we
all say seven in the most robotic voice, we can one, two, three, seven.

Speaker 1 (01:17:03):
Hey, seventy three in counting, Here we go. He's gonna
take off in the second half of the season, right,
seventy three to go as they continue to work out
wide receivers on off days.

Speaker 3 (01:17:12):
Correct, I'm guessing that yes, McCole Hardman Junior definitely has
a resume of note. He was one of the white
outs they worked out yesterday. Obviously is important catching the
Super Bowl. I assume those white outs were mostly to
help out with the quarterback try. We can get in
those quarterback names on the other side. By the way,
if you missed that yesterday, the quarterback list that did
not come to fruition for the Colts.

Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
Yeah, we can do that, but in an effort to distract,
I'm going to give stuff away. Kevin, how about that.

Speaker 3 (01:17:37):
I always love that.

Speaker 1 (01:17:38):
I'm gonna do that. I've got two four packs right
now to go see Butler basketball playing against Notre Dame
Friday night at Hankel. We're gonna do it on the
text line textas Bulldog basketball at two three nine ten
seventy two three nine ten seventy Bulldog Basketball, and before
the end of the show will randomly pick from everybody

(01:17:59):
who's in entered two four packs to go see Butler
and Notre Dame Friday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Tell you
more about that as we move along as well. It's
all coming up next. Ninety three five and one of
seven to five The Fan.

Speaker 7 (01:18:12):
You were listening to The Fan Morning Show on Sports
Radio ninety three five and one oh seven five the Fan.

Speaker 1 (01:18:20):
Good morning, and welcome into the Fan Morning Show. Speaking
of back, Calob's back again for the third day in
a row. We appreciate that Mark dychd and sunning himself
somewhere and probably being leaped upon from the third rope
by one of his kids as they like to do.
Have you heard from from market All on his vacation
or as he'd been silent and out.

Speaker 2 (01:18:38):
I've been trying to not bother him too much, you know.
I know he works hard, and I'm trying to give
him a break.

Speaker 6 (01:18:45):
So Mark works hard. He barely works, he barely works.

Speaker 4 (01:18:52):
But no, he honestly got the Wall Deserve vacation down
there in Florida. I have you all ever driven as
far as he has?

Speaker 6 (01:18:59):
I would? I feel like I would at that drive.

Speaker 4 (01:19:00):
But he does it quite often to go see the
family and hang out with the kids.

Speaker 5 (01:19:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:19:04):
No, When I was a kid, we had we did
the old vacation thing, had the station wagon, the panel
on the side and everything. We went to Disneyland one
year when I was a teenager.

Speaker 4 (01:19:15):
Ooh, humbougie. Now I tell my family anything over five hours,
I'm not riding with you. I'll catch you on a plane.

Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
James. The four quarterbacks that the Colts worked out yesterday,
Jeff Driscoll, Jaren Hall Tanner, Mordecai Trass. Any of those
four stand out to you?

Speaker 5 (01:19:39):
No?

Speaker 6 (01:19:40):
And apparently none of them stood out to the Colts either.

Speaker 4 (01:19:43):
Like I said, I think the one in all seriousness
is probably College Trask because he's a second round pick,
and I'm like, all right, well, is there some talent
there that we just haven't seen it? But he's I
believe he's only thrown like eleven passes in the NFL,
So I get that he was behind Tom Brady and
Baker Mayfield for some time there, but to just cut
ties with him already be a kind of a journeyman
is a little bit surprising to me. But as far

(01:20:04):
as the other guys, yeah, none of the other ones
really stood out to me. I thought, you know, Tanner
Mordecai was a bit of a surprise sort of participant
to me because he's still on the young side. So
I'm like, if you're leaning more towards experience, he doesn't
have much of it at all, being undrafted just last year.
So other than that, I mean, it's always interesting to

(01:20:28):
see like who is available and who do they bring in,
And so when I was going through my own list,
I was trying to cross reference, like how many did
I get right? And I think I only got Jeff
drescoll On there myself.

Speaker 3 (01:20:41):
Yeah, you know, when you look at Jared Hall mentioned
him the Colts did work him out in the twenty
two the same year. Yes, Anthy Richardson Hall put up
some big numbers of BYU was with Minnesota out of
the draft, ended up being a fifth round pick in
that draft. Class did start a couple of games for
the Vikings, So there is a little bit of connection there,

(01:21:01):
and that Shane Steichen actually worked him out during the draft.
But that list, you know, I did have this thought
as the day played out yesterday of like, you know,
the Taylor Heinekes of the world, or some of these
guys that are on the list and have a little
bit more of a resume off shocked that he wasn't
brought in. Well, if you're him, don't you hold out

(01:21:22):
for other better opportunities. The opportunity here is to be
a backup. What happens when a quarterback gets hurt? Right,
what happens when Joe Burrow happens again? Like if Daniel
Jones is out for a month. Now is Taylor Heineke's
agent saying hello, we want to listen now. You know
right here you're just a backup. And Daniel Jones, Yeah,
albeit he has some injury history, but you know he

(01:21:44):
hasn't missed a meaningful snap this season. So I do
think some of those sorts of guys. Again, Heinike is
probably the most attractive of a lot of these names.
Are they saying, Hey, it's October fifteenth, I don't need
to jump at something. Let's wait a month, Let's see
how the next month plays out, and maybe whatever Jalen

(01:22:04):
Hurts gets hurt in Philly or Baker Mayfield in Tampa
or Josh Allen in Buffalo, you know somebody else if
they are to get hurt like Burrow did earlier in
the year, then boom. Now I have an opportunity to
start and not just be here, yeah and hold the
Microsoft surface.

Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
And also probably you bring in a guy like Heinke
probably makes the future of AR even murkier because he's
been around the league for a while and he's done
a few things, and he is at best, I mean,
at worst, a legitimate backup, and he's made some starts
in his career that might just muddy the waters even further.

Speaker 3 (01:22:39):
If you're the idn't care about that? Maybe not Anthony
Richardson hasn't earned the right for you all of a
sudden be like ah, I'm nervous how he's going to
react to this.

Speaker 4 (01:22:47):
But at Jeff's point, I mean, everything we've heard from
the Colts is that we're not giving up on him.

Speaker 6 (01:22:51):
Yeah, we still believe in his future.

Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
Is still but he's out a month plus. I mean
you can't. You can't sit here and coddle Anthony Richardson
at this point.

Speaker 4 (01:22:59):
You know, I think that that Jeff is making it,
and it's correct me if I'm wrong. If I think
the point he's making is, assuming Anthony Richardson comes back,
you've had Taylor Heineke here, what decision do you make
then it's not necessarily that he's out running. Yeah, when
he's out, you do whatever you gotta do to get better.
But when he comes back, if Taylor Heineke's shown he's
a good backup, do you say, okay, is he's the

(01:23:21):
our backup guy?

Speaker 3 (01:23:22):
Yeah? I think you cross that bridge when it comes.
I just don't think we're in a camp with Richardson
right now to where even he's locked in as being
the backup. We'll see where he's at healthwise, and then
from a backup quarterback standpoint, you know, whenever that comes,
whether it's Thanksgiving. Whether it's longer than that, then you
cross that bridge. So I will be interested to see

(01:23:43):
how they handle Brett Ripping in terms of the practice squad. Again,
you can be elevated three times during a season. Well,
Richardson has to miss four games. So at some point,
assuming they bring Ripping to the practice squad, they're going
to have to bring him to the fifty three man
roster if they want to continue to dress three quarterbacks

(01:24:05):
on game day. Again, it's a little roster gymnastics. Yeah,
but that's how this roll is here. So we'll see
how Riley Leonard and this plays out throughout this week.

Speaker 1 (01:24:14):
Yeah, and you know you're going to have to have
somebody on that practice squad anyway. So to your point,
I'm really sure to see after this week if they
don't feel like like Ripping is ready to go right now,
what do they do the second week between those.

Speaker 10 (01:24:30):
Two quarterbacks, who gets elevated to the backup. I think
that's gonna be really once Ripped and whatever learns to
playbook more. Again, they don't have to have any quarterback
on the practice squad. Riley Leonard is not on the
practice squad. Rile Leonard's on the fifty three man roster,
so they could, but they don't have to. A lot
of teams I think now have rolled with three quarterbacks
on their fifty three man roster just to protect all

(01:24:51):
three of those guys. So Colts get back to practice
later today again on that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday cadence before
they head out to LA this weekend.

Speaker 1 (01:24:59):
All right, still I ahead another look into this week's
game for the Indiana Hoosiers that they take on Michigan State.
A little bit more on the Colts, some thoughts A
couple of days on from three preseason games. Now for
the Indiana Pacers, it's all straight ahead. At ninety three
five and one of seven five the Fans. You are

(01:25:20):
listening to the.

Speaker 7 (01:25:21):
Fan Morning Show on Sports Radio ninety three to five
and one oh seven five.

Speaker 1 (01:25:25):
The Fan, Good morning, and welcome into the Fan Morning Show.
James Boyd, Kevin Bowen, kayleb Vzoover. You and your dad's
still fighting on the text line. What's going on over there?

Speaker 2 (01:25:35):
Not quite We're done with that. We've moved past that.
But he did text me personally.

Speaker 1 (01:25:39):
All right, that's good. We like Momo's Welcome to the show. Anytime.

Speaker 4 (01:25:42):
Is Mo still paying the phone? But he says, son,
I own his phone, I own your text line?

Speaker 6 (01:25:48):
How about that?

Speaker 1 (01:25:49):
He's not answering, he's just laughing at I'm.

Speaker 6 (01:25:51):
Just saying no. I must say my parents kick me
off quick.

Speaker 4 (01:25:53):
Soon as I graduated college, it was like, yeah, You're
gonna have to start paying his phone bill.

Speaker 3 (01:25:56):
Yeah, I gotta be nice. You're right, Jane.

Speaker 1 (01:25:59):
We have a couple the winners though. I'm jeff Rickord.
By the way, we have a couple of winners for
Butler Bulldog basketball against Notre Dame on Friday night. We
asked you to Texas at two three, nine, ten seventy
and just use the two words Butler Bulldog to be
entered in dozens and dozens and dozens of entrants, and
we have two winners. Caleb who who gets the tickets
this morning?

Speaker 2 (01:26:19):
Joe from Mooresville, congratulations And Tug Townsend.

Speaker 1 (01:26:25):
That's a great name, Tug Townsend. I like that.

Speaker 3 (01:26:28):
I love that. Should be rocketing there. I will be
in the building coming up Friday night. Ryan Bowen and
I in the building.

Speaker 1 (01:26:34):
I like it. What's that our name out for basketball
this year?

Speaker 3 (01:26:36):
Can we talk no name basketball?

Speaker 1 (01:26:38):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (01:26:38):
No, please, I'm just just give meinty seconds, just thirty seconds.

Speaker 3 (01:26:42):
What do you mean why do you say quickly?

Speaker 6 (01:26:44):
So quickly?

Speaker 3 (01:26:44):
Why can't we talk?

Speaker 1 (01:26:46):
Because we're gonna talk Pacers basketball, Burton first team all acc.

Speaker 3 (01:26:50):
I do love to be some Marcus Braydon Shrewsbury, one
of the best shooters in college basketball. Jalen Harrelson offering
another ball handlerre off the wing. The heralded recruit car
Tout from Northern Arizona led college basketball and rebounding last year.
Just a Greek god of a of a big dude. Honestly,
cannot wait for that. Cole serta great shooter, Brady Kaylor

(01:27:12):
from Cathedral High School right here right or Frost another
shooter off sicko. I cannot wait for Notre Dame basketball.
You've see Notre Dame basketball want at all than Notre Dame football.

Speaker 1 (01:27:20):
What's better than exact?

Speaker 3 (01:27:22):
That is an honest statement. Yeah, I'd rather see Notre
Dame basketball want at all than the note in football.

Speaker 6 (01:27:27):
Honestly, there's nothing better in going to Why I mentioned
very curious about this.

Speaker 1 (01:27:31):
I'm not getting in here, Caleb.

Speaker 3 (01:27:32):
I think there is a little part of me that
grew up in still the basketball state of Indiana. Respect Okay,
like the forty nine States is just basketball, but this
is Indiana is still kind of alive in me. And
I don't know, I'm thirty six, so maybe like twenty six,
maybe sixteenth, maybe, like it's common transition football wise. Granted,
Pacers and Fever obviously are certainly back in a very

(01:27:55):
prominent view, but that is still.

Speaker 9 (01:28:00):
I did.

Speaker 3 (01:28:00):
There's something about it. I just love Notaraday basketball. I
love it more than Notding football. I mean, I have
an unhealthy obsession for both. Let me be very clear,
but if I had to pick one or the other,
it'd be there. Dame Basketball, you did.

Speaker 1 (01:28:10):
Go old school and start doing your shows with a
like a highlight or a green or yellow pink highlighter
like Phelps.

Speaker 3 (01:28:16):
Yeah, speaking of emotional basketball, I I got a litleteria yesterday.

Speaker 1 (01:28:22):
Uh oh, what happened?

Speaker 3 (01:28:23):
So I believe it debuts. I want to say it
might be tomorrow debuts here pretty soon. We know Tyre's
Halliburton is going to be on the Starting five documentary
on Netflix, and we saw a snippet of it a
few weeks back where they showed some behind the scenes footage.
And I shouldn't say behind the scenes footage. They just
showed footage that we will see coming up in the

(01:28:45):
documentary debuts about Game seven in Oklahoma City. And I
mean he's literally the cameras are in the locker room
with him and his family after the torn Achilles takes place.
I mean it was incredible footage. Jarring, certainly, but incredible footage.
And Netflix and Halliburton released a video yesterday that had

(01:29:08):
Reggie Miller commenting on what Tyrese Halliburton did in terms
of electing to play in the NBA Finals. And they did,
like picture the little Michael Jordan last dance scene where
you hand the iPad so the guy and you have
him watch the clips. So Caleb go ahead and cue

(01:29:28):
this up. It's about it's about a minute or two.
You'll hear Reggie Miller's voice first, correct Caleb, and then
they'll transition to Halliburton. But basically it's Tyrese watching Reggie
Miller talk about him and what he did. And uh,
it's it's quite the clip.

Speaker 11 (01:29:46):
No one will ever second guess any decision that he
ever makes. Again. He risked it all.

Speaker 1 (01:29:56):
He risked it all.

Speaker 11 (01:29:57):
For a franchise, for a state, for an organization, how
many how many guys in life? How many women in
life are willing to risk it all?

Speaker 1 (01:30:11):
Risk it all?

Speaker 11 (01:30:13):
But this comes back full circle moment to what's it
like to be a Hoosier and to play in Indiana.
I'm not playing for myself. I'm playing for that dude,
playing for that dude, I'm playing for these people. That's
what it's like to be an Indiana Pacers.

Speaker 6 (01:30:34):
So thank you, Tyrese.

Speaker 12 (01:30:38):
Yeah, it's just like like I don't like, like, you know,
you gotta you gotta like move on forward, but like, yeah,
I don't know, it's just like it's tough, but you
know we're gonna I'm gonna work my ass off to
uh you know, to get back there, and uh you

(01:30:59):
know I'm gonna do it in a Pacer uniforms. Oh
you know this place is uh it's very special for me.
And you know, like I said, when wouldn't change my
my decision for a second, and uh you know, I'll
work my ass off every day to get back there.
But you know it's not it's not guaranteed, but we're

(01:31:19):
gonna fight, like I held him to, you know, trying
to make it happen. So uh, yeah, that that means
a lot from from him, and uh, there's not many
people that uh, you know, can say say things to uh,
you know, make me feel you know, this way. So
you know that's just uh you know, shows uh you

(01:31:40):
know what he means to me and and uh what
this place means to me.

Speaker 6 (01:31:43):
So it's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (01:31:46):
Yeah, I'll get you going right there. And what was
fun too during that whole playoff run, especially towards the
end that Reggie was right there courtside watching all of
it all the time. That was fun to watch too.

Speaker 3 (01:31:57):
James, would you make of that?

Speaker 4 (01:32:01):
I think it's everything that we love about basketball in
this state, right And I got chills just watching it.

Speaker 6 (01:32:08):
I didn't really get like emotional.

Speaker 4 (01:32:10):
I just felt extremely proud that we call this guy
our own. And I think I've said this publicly, but
Tyre's Halliburton is probably my favorite athlete that I've covered
because of moments like that where he's you know, happy, vulnerable,
real and it just feels like the dude understands everything

(01:32:32):
that we're about. And I keep saying this and I've
said this for months now, and really for a couple
of years when we tell the Tyre's Halliburton story and
we remind people that he wasn't drafted here, it's gonna
sound like a question you get on Jeopardy, like, wait,
what he wasn't drafted here, They didn't pick him up,
Like he feels like a lifetime pacer, lifetime Hoosier. And yeah,

(01:32:52):
I feel for him because you see all the emotions
there and I think that there is and this is
why I will always push back against the whole, like, well,
if you don't win it all, it's for nothing.

Speaker 6 (01:33:02):
Now it meant something like that run is everything.

Speaker 4 (01:33:05):
It's for fro folks around here, And it fits the
narrative of all man like you know you're the underdog.

Speaker 6 (01:33:10):
Stay underdog team.

Speaker 4 (01:33:11):
He didn't get over the hump, but just to chase
the grind and the willingness to put it all out there.
So much respect to him, And yeah, I actually just
bought his sneakers the other day because I was thinking
of how cool he is and I don't need any
more basketball shootes at all, honestly. But this was maybe
over the weekend. Yeah, I went in last minute. I
was just driving by the mall and I was like,

(01:33:33):
you know what, I want to see. These hal burdens
are there, let me just go get these cause he's
a guy that I feel like we should just support
to that in that effect. Now excited for him to
get healthy get back out there next season. But yeah,
I felt all the fields watching that, and I'm sure
all the emotions will come back when we sit down
and watch the entire thing. I know some people were like, oh,
I can't watch that at all.

Speaker 6 (01:33:53):
I can.

Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
I mean, it was great theater all the way up
until the end. But the great part is, at least
in my opinion, is that this isn't a career ending injury.
It's just hopefully a hurdle that makes a story greater later.

Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
I think in a load management era, to know what
Tyres Haliburton did this is probably another thing that just
echoes everything that you just said. I thought you laid
that out really well, James, and like, yeah, you do
forget at times he wasn't. He was like he was
a king initially. What was the thing that is before

(01:34:27):
he became a pacer, Because he does feel so, I mean,
he has embraced us just as much as we have
embraced it, and to say we when I use that pronoun,
you know, credit the Pacers because Rick Carlisle know shared
the story with us, and I believe, by the way,
Tuesday will be our restart with Rick Carlisle coming up
here as we get into those eight o'clock combos with him,

(01:34:48):
so fingers crossed on that they'll open up their season
coming up a week from Thursday. But you know, Rick
mentioned that, you know when he went to dinner with
those guys and guys plural, you know, Buddy Healed and
I think Tristan Thompson, you know, when when they would
dinner together after the trade, Rick said to Tyresse directly like,
here's the ball. You know you are our quarterback. You
know you are our mahomes and we need you to

(01:35:13):
be the conductor and orchestrate it all. And to have
that belief in him before even really playing a game
with you, I think it is also something that Rick
deserves a lot of credit for and again organizationally, for
them to view it in that like, because yeah, I mean,
Tyresee was an attractive trade piece, but to act like
teams were just beating down Sacramento's door to say, hey,
we want him to be our franchise point guard. Like

(01:35:34):
not everybody was doing it.

Speaker 4 (01:35:35):
No, I mean, in hindsight, they probably should have been
doing that correct before he played his first game.

Speaker 6 (01:35:40):
I remember being in the Pacers media room before ty
Reese made his home debut and Kevin Pritcher compared him
to Peyton Manny and Andrew Luck. I know, and I remember.

Speaker 4 (01:35:53):
Thinking in the moment, you are insane, like what are
you doing. You're sending this kid up for failure. Those
guys are legends here, especially eighteen. I mean, he's the
only one in the city, only athlete in the city
who has a statue outside of his old office. So
to look at that moment a few years ago to
where they are now and say that they were right
on the money about this guy, hats off to that
front office And like you said to Rick Carlo for

(01:36:15):
seeing it before the rest of the world did. And
I'm gonna miss the joy he plays with and like
I said, even the lows.

Speaker 6 (01:36:22):
I mean, the only time I ever.

Speaker 4 (01:36:25):
Really criticized Tyrese as like character wise is when he
skipped out and talking to the media after that stinker
against the Cavs and the playoffs. But even then, the
next day he comes out and says, you know what,
or next game, I should have spoke.

Speaker 6 (01:36:37):
I messed up. And then he gave us a real
answer and said, you know what, A had.

Speaker 4 (01:36:40):
A bad game. I didn't want to talk to you guys.
And you don't get that type of, you know, just
candidness from athletes ever, especially American athletes. I' must say, like,
I get a kick out of talking to Bernard Ryman,
the Coast left tackle, because it seems like he wasn't
trained that way. So he gets brutally honest assessments of
himself and the team. Sometimes you're like, wait, that's refreshing.
But for someone who you know, kind of grew up
in this has been a pretty high level player pretty

(01:37:01):
much all his life to offer that sort of peak
behind the curtain all the time, seemingly I can respect that.

Speaker 1 (01:37:10):
You can get a look at the Netflix starting five
series that follows a couple of NDBA players Kevin Durant,
Jalen Brown, Shake Giligess, Alexander James Harden, and of course
Tyreez Aliburton drops tomorrow Kevin.

Speaker 3 (01:37:24):
Oh good, good, good good? What do we got tomorrow?

Speaker 11 (01:37:26):
Is it?

Speaker 3 (01:37:26):
Steelers Bengals? Yep, okay, all right, well that's not appointment. Appointment.
I'll probably flip over to it at some point, but yeah,
I'll definitely be checking that out. One thing to note,
Pacers back to practice today again. Friday will be their
preseason finale. Like I said, eight days from today, we'll
take on the Thunder. I'm one thing, I'm nervous, and

(01:37:47):
I still like the over to be clear on their
over under wins bet whatever it is, thirty eight and
a half, thirty seven and a half. But and I
don't want to react too much of Monday night in
the preseason game. But I think one thing a reason
why been so bullish on their win total over hitting
in recent years, as I think they've had such a
regular season superpower that actually has played out a little

(01:38:09):
bit more in the playoffs than it usually does. But
one of the Pacers' great superpowers in recent years has
been their depth on an eighty two night grind. The
NBA season is a grind. It's eighty two games, and
we see players sit quite often, and yet the Pacers.
How many times have we sat here the morning after

(01:38:30):
Pacer game and said, man, I feel like the bench
just kind of turned the game last night. I felt
like McConnell did this. I felt like Matheren did that.
Man Obi top and hitting those two or three threes
was huge. Is that still going to be there? Is
your depth still a superpower? Matherins Now where starting lineup,
Tija mcconnald's now out for the first ten twelve games

(01:38:53):
of the season. That second unit, it's kind of a
mash unit right now. You think Jarris Walker is going
to ascend, we'll see you still have Obi with that
second unit. You might argue Obi is best served with
the starting unit right now depth at center. His question
is Johnny for a rotational role Ben Shephard right now,

(01:39:15):
Cameron Payne is with that second unit, So that would
be a question that I do have. Is your depth
still a superpower? Because I think it has been that
for this organization here, especially in Rick Carlisle's second iteration,
is that still there?

Speaker 1 (01:39:29):
To your point, Kevin, there's just that just means there's
no margin for air in terms of injuries, like you're
already you're already there starting the season off right there.

Speaker 3 (01:39:37):
Well, and last year, you know Nemhard and Ni Smith
both in his games earlier in the season and you
started ten to fifteen. You know, we almost forget about that.
So that would be a question that I do have.
As the Pacers have one more preseason game left coming
up on Friday.

Speaker 1 (01:39:52):
Thirty six and a half is at Fandel right now,
just looking up the over under right Pacers thirty six
and a half.

Speaker 3 (01:39:59):
So they watch the game Monday and they said, look
at these centers.

Speaker 1 (01:40:01):
They looked at the centers and saw the early injury
to TJ McConnell, and to your point, just now they're like, oh,
we had them at thirty eight. Let's let's back it
off a little bit.

Speaker 3 (01:40:10):
Thirty six that's a low number.

Speaker 5 (01:40:12):
Man.

Speaker 1 (01:40:14):
I just can't imagine Rick Carlisle his group and the
way they play basketball, because I'm telling you they are
going to win more than their fair share of games
on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday random nights when teams come
in here in the second game of back to back
and this team is just going to run those teams ragged.

Speaker 3 (01:40:31):
But is that still a superpower? That's the question I
have is that is your depth piece still as potent.

Speaker 6 (01:40:37):
It's a great question as it has been.

Speaker 4 (01:40:40):
Honestly, I mean, do you have a legitimate starting center.

Speaker 6 (01:40:45):
That's gonna be. I mean you can be. I don't know.

Speaker 4 (01:40:48):
Spit elbow, grease and grit doesn't always work when other
seems is just more talented.

Speaker 6 (01:40:52):
So I'm very curious see how that works out for
give it to me sometimes spit elbow, grease and grit.

Speaker 4 (01:40:58):
Yeah, I mean it's great, you know the old Hey,
if we got more moxie than the other team.

Speaker 3 (01:41:03):
But this is the Hosier's movie, Max.

Speaker 6 (01:41:05):
There's a lot of players out there.

Speaker 1 (01:41:06):
So here's the next logical step to that line of thinking.

Speaker 3 (01:41:09):
Though, sign James board right above Max's bed, right above
the head.

Speaker 1 (01:41:13):
You have it painted on the wall. There you go.

Speaker 3 (01:41:16):
I might make Max do it a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:41:19):
So the next logical place to go with that, we've
been talking about the Colts in their quarterback situation right
now behind Daniel Jones. Is there a point where they
start looking at making a move for centers that could
come in and play legitimate minutes night in and night
out against better centers in the NBA.

Speaker 3 (01:41:37):
They look at me, Yeah, no, I mean no, I
think what you've done, you've you've you've done. I don't Yeah,
I can't see them.

Speaker 1 (01:41:46):
If they routinely get beat up in the post every
single night in the first third of the season. You
have to start thinking about things, don't you.

Speaker 3 (01:41:53):
Well, I guess you could. You could also start thinking
about if it gets ugly, do you wave the white flag?
The PACER's ever done that? Well, they certainly did a
couple of years ago.

Speaker 4 (01:42:03):
Oh absolutely, I was there. Oh you ain't gotta tell me,
oh brother. They ended the year with the ten game
losing streak, and I was told repeatedly that Malcolm Brogden's
was dealing with achilles tendon nightis or something, and we're like,
he's never playing it, and they wouldn't ruling out for
the rest of the season.

Speaker 6 (01:42:18):
It was every day asking about this guy's.

Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
Achilles, Jeff. To your point, the Pacers, I would say,
normally do not do that. They definitely did it a
few years back, and by no means am by sitting
here on October fifteenth acting like they're going to and
again that's another reason why I think the over on
their win total is probably the better bet, because there
are a lot of teams around the league right now
that at the first side of adversity, they're like, you

(01:42:40):
know what, let's go watch aj debantson. Let's go watch
those boozer kids.

Speaker 1 (01:42:45):
Start the process from Duke.

Speaker 6 (01:42:46):
Yeah, yeah, I'm just saying I.

Speaker 3 (01:42:47):
Don't think the Pacers are going to be jumping on
that train as quickly as other teams are. But let's
also not be naive and not sit here in reality
and realize no Tyre's Hall and if all of a
sudden you found a piece in the draft next year
that turns into a very important player for you in

(01:43:09):
the next Haliburton window, we could probably get over a
thirty win season here rather quickly. Again, it's nothing you
want to really, I think put a ton of eggs
into that basket when you are a game away from
winning the NBA Finals last year. But you also can't
completely ignore it.

Speaker 1 (01:43:28):
All right, we'll talk Indiana football coming up at about
twelve minutes here, looking forward to seeing what is on
the mind of James Coworker over there at the Athletic today.
We're looking forward to find it out what's happening with
Indiana as they get ready for Michigan State, and of
course all the talk around Kurt Signetti. But right now,
let's check things down.

Speaker 7 (01:43:48):
The morning checkdown on ninety sweet five and one oh
seven five fan.

Speaker 1 (01:43:53):
You'll go through this fairly quickly. Right now, the Colts
have acquired twenty nine year old Brett ripping at quarterback,
who put him on the practice out at this point
in time, What do we know about Brett Rippon so far?
Kevin Bowen, He's.

Speaker 3 (01:44:04):
A nephew of Mark for those out there. Last time
I threw a pass in the NFL, I think it
was twenty three four starts in the league. Never really
been a backup, backup, kind of mostly been in that
third quarterback role. Has gotten elevated at some points in
his career, most recently with Cincinnati. So this past year
he joined the Bengals practice squad. Burrow gets hurt, boom,

(01:44:26):
he becomes a backup, and then when they traded for Flacco,
that's when Cincinnati got rid of him. So again, there
are some backups out there, or some free agent quarterbacks
out there that probably have a little bit more on
the resume. It's not like he's got nothing on the resume.
And now we wait and see how the week plays out.
Will it be Riley Leonard one play away in that
number two role on Sunday, or will it be Brett Rippen.

(01:44:46):
I assume the other would then be the emergency third
quarterback James.

Speaker 1 (01:44:50):
We all remember that Riley Leonard looked good in that
last preseason game against the Bengals, but it's a whole
different animal to play in the regular season with a
team that's five and one. Correct.

Speaker 4 (01:44:58):
Absolutely, it is sort of what we always experience with
Everyone loves the backup quarterback until they get in the
game for real. So and I actually don't want to
put Ry Leinard in that situation, but I do find
interesting to really understand or go through shame Psychn's thought
practice for this upcoming week. Would you rather have Ryan

(01:45:19):
Leonard be your QB two going into Sunday's game against
the Chargers because he's been here for a while, Or
are you gonna hand those keys immediately to Brett Rippan, who,
in theory would have only had three practices with the Colts.

Speaker 1 (01:45:30):
Yeah. Of course, every Tuesday is a day that teams
like to bring in players that they're evaluating. Could they
be a fit on the fifty three man roster, maybeven
put them on the practice squad. Of course, they were
looking for a kicker not too long ago. They picked
up badly for that bunch of wide receivers on the
field yesterday. What do we make of that, James Boyd.

Speaker 6 (01:45:47):
Do you need somebody to throw to? That's what I
make of it.

Speaker 4 (01:45:50):
They have a lot of talent already at that position,
So I wouldn't, you know, pay much attenest to I
know McCole Harmon was out there, so that's somebody who's
a name. Won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Might
have wont a couple, but yeah, I wouldn't pay too
much int into that.

Speaker 1 (01:46:02):
All right. We were talking about the Indiana Pacers just
a few moments ago. They will finish up their preseason
on Friday at San Antonio. To hear that game live
right here on ninety three five, one oh seven five
the Fan getting ready for the season opener against the
Oklahoma City Thunder. That'll be a week from Thursday at
the field House seven to thirty pm. Start again, all
these games heard live right here on ninety three five

(01:46:23):
and one oh seven five the Fan and we were
just talking about it a moment ago. For those just
joining us, CALMONI you want to find out more about
Tyrese Haliburton and his season last year, starting five drops
on Netflix tomorrow. Look forward to.

Speaker 3 (01:46:35):
That, definitely, definitely looking forward to that. It seems like
some great, great behind the scenes stuff, so yes, looking
forward to it.

Speaker 1 (01:46:41):
All right. The National League Championship Series is going to
take the day off, but not before the Dodgers have
taken it two games to none lead over the Milwaukee Brewers.
After a win last night in which Yosha no, I'm sorry,
Yosha Nobu, I can't read the small print. This morning,
Yamamoto had a complete game, one run allowed, three he hits,
one walk, seven strikeouts, home runs from Taoscar Hernandez and

(01:47:04):
Max Munsey. And just like that, the Brewers are down
to zip James Boyd and we go back to Los Angeles.
Now things are not looking good for Joel Rickson. You
got to give him the business over at Colts Camp today.

Speaker 4 (01:47:15):
Oh No, I try to stay away from the baseball rivalries.
I feel like if I ever make fun of Matt
Conti's team to his face with the Phillies or Joel
a Ericson's team with the Brewers of their face, I'll
probably you know, be wearing a face mask after I.

Speaker 6 (01:47:30):
Can hit in my face.

Speaker 1 (01:47:31):
Oh wow, get brutal over there at Colts Camp.

Speaker 6 (01:47:34):
Hey, these guys love their baseball all right.

Speaker 1 (01:47:36):
Later on tonight in the American League, the Toronto Blue
Jays are down two games to none. They'll try to
scrap out a win on the road against the Mariners.
That one has first pitch at eighth eight. No football
in the NFL until tomorrow night. As you mentioned a
moment ago. Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Cincinnati Bengals in
that one, and of course Saturday, Kurtz Signetti and Indiana

(01:47:56):
will host Michigan State. That one starts three point thirty
down in Bloomington. Purdue plays at Northwestern Ball State host
Akron and number twenty USA a USC take it on
number thirteen Notre Dame.

Speaker 3 (01:48:08):
Kevin, I hate USC.

Speaker 1 (01:48:12):
Anything today or that you wanted to share with us.

Speaker 3 (01:48:15):
The only thing I like are their cheerleaders.

Speaker 1 (01:48:18):
Hey, speak of cheerleaders. You see the cheerleader that was
proposed to on the Colts end zone this past week.

Speaker 6 (01:48:23):
I did see that.

Speaker 1 (01:48:24):
That was pretty cool.

Speaker 4 (01:48:26):
Yeah, I feel like we see one of those every
couple of no, say, every couple of games, maybe once
a season or something like that. So congrats to the
newly engaged couple.

Speaker 3 (01:48:35):
Twenty year anniversary of the Bush Push. Thank you Caleb
for having that all over this morning. It's iconic.

Speaker 1 (01:48:41):
I mean, come on, we need to before the end
of the show, we need to find a replay of
that play that we can play.

Speaker 2 (01:48:47):
Yeah, well, if we really want to torture Kevin, Yeah,
I mean we could do.

Speaker 3 (01:48:51):
That was so long ago. Who do you think was
was it Tom Hammond on the call of that one?

Speaker 2 (01:48:55):
I think so because they were doing the NBC games
back then, I believes.

Speaker 3 (01:49:00):
Trying to Mike Mayock, I don't know who would have
been the color announcer Pray and I'm may I probably Hell,
probably the dude that used to be the usc A
d what was his name, Pat Hayden, But that was
a while back.

Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
I bet yeah, he might have been on that one.

Speaker 3 (01:49:11):
Remember, like it was yesterday, Zibakowski punt return. Thought the
stadium was gonna literally explode after that, boy, fourth and nine,
Dwayne Jarrett, Ambrose Wooden had great coverage and then the
rest is history. There.

Speaker 1 (01:49:24):
You want to talk about football players, I love to
watch Zibakowski play.

Speaker 3 (01:49:28):
Zibakowski could play. Wow, he could play.

Speaker 1 (01:49:30):
Did you call the Bears for a while.

Speaker 3 (01:49:31):
Oh yeah, he was a cult. He was a raven.
Yeah yeah, he had a little bit of an NFL
A couple of coffee. I hate to see this news yesterday.
Hope the best for his health because the the statement
David Bell, former Warren Central Star, former produced star had
on social media, Boy, that was a tough read and
saying that he suffered an injury off the field beyond

(01:49:53):
his control that would potentially risk life and a limb
I believe was the phrase in there. So best to
David Bell, because you want to talk about just an
unbelievable two sport athlete. Honestly, there are probably some people
in the state that remember More as a basketball player.
In the shot he hit over Romeo Lankford to win
the semi state game down there back in whatever year

(01:50:15):
that would have been eighteen nineteen something like that. I
remember his game at Iowa when Purdue upset Iowa. He
just went off. I think he had hell it might
have been two thirty, two forty something like that in
that game. Just a great, great player and had a
hip injury prior. This is not related. It doesn't sound
like it is related to this injury that led to
his retiring, but a hip injury that really stunted his

(01:50:37):
third season with Cleveland. And then, honestly, when you're wide
out and you get drafted the Cleveland Browns, you're probably
already starting with you know, behind the eight ball, if
you will, so best to David Bell. I hate to
see anybody retire from the NFL, let alone at the
age of twenty four.

Speaker 1 (01:50:52):
All right, coming up in a moment, Justin Williams from
the Athletic tells us more about IU football as they
host Michigan State this Saturday afternoon. We'll talk about it
as we continue in ninety three five one to seven
five the Fan and we are smack dab in the
middle of football season. Colts are five and one, Indiana
is undefeated, number three in the nation. I can't say

(01:51:13):
that enough. It's just as fantastic to watch. It's it's
awe inspiring, it's it's everything. We've wanted college football to
be around here for a long time, and it's going well.
We bring in our next guest, Justin Williams from the Athletic,
who joined us on the Payless Liquors Hotline this morning.
Good morning, Justin, thanks for being here. We appreciate your time.
Is it as crazy to you to start saying Indiana

(01:51:34):
ranked number three in the country, and like you feel
good about saying it, Like it's not a mirage.

Speaker 9 (01:51:38):
Right totally, and you know, let's go even further. Indiana
legit national championship contender. That's what. That's what Saturday was
that that win at Oregon. You know, I think anyone
that's that's arguing otherwise is doing in bad faith now.
So it's it's been quite a rise under Signetti, but
it really felt like Saturday was kind of like that
that exclamation point that, you know, kind of official arrival

(01:51:59):
that you they've been really good, but now we're talking
about them as like a team that can actually win
a national championship.

Speaker 4 (01:52:06):
Justin James Voyd here, thanks for one answering my text
last night. It's kind of last minute get for the show,
but I know you and Ralph had sort of a
breakdown of the quick takeaways or reactions to that game,
and I want to go back to a moment in
that game where you have the pick six from Fernando
Mendoza the game is tied there on the road. What
did you think of the response from Iu and what

(01:52:28):
that says about how serious this program can be.

Speaker 9 (01:52:32):
Yeah, I mean that felt like the moment, right, you know,
Oregon really couldn't get it going offensively. Indiana had really
gotten after and sacked Dante more, but Indiana wasn't necessarily
playing great offensively either, and so then it feels like,
all right, Oregon's at home. They get the pick six,
big momentum shift, this is it. They're going to kind
of you know, salt away of the game now, and
that's going to flip it. And I think that was

(01:52:53):
when the next was the twelve place seventy five yard
drive that you know, Mendoza lead them down and to
go ahead score. That was just like, you know, those
are the kind of the teams that you feel like,
all right, you know these teams they have their identity
figured out, they have their confidence, they have their coaching
where you can make a mistake like that can feel like,
you know, everything thing's kind of going against you. And

(01:53:15):
then instead of panicking or instead of stuff falling apart,
you know, they actually kind of locked in and then
you know, they go on that drive. They pick off
more twice in the fourth quarter, So it was all
just kind of part of it.

Speaker 5 (01:53:26):
You know.

Speaker 9 (01:53:26):
I think everyone watching that game going into it was like,
all right, is it going to be like last year
when you know, they really weren't up for that game
against Ohio State on the road and they couldn't hang
with Notre Dame in the playoffs, and so then they're
kind of you know, hanging around at the close game
and and then that moment never probably thinking like all right,
this is it. You know, this word it's going to
fall apart, and they just at every turn this year

(01:53:47):
have kind of proven whether it was that Illinois game
or you know, just the way they've kind of dominated
every other opponent. And then to have that that game
on the road just a completely you know, impressive win.
It definitely solidified and erase any doubt that anyone should
have about them.

Speaker 3 (01:54:03):
Justin Williams with us here from the athletic I call
what James said. We appreciate you joining us justin here
on this Wednesday morning. If I would have asked you
this question, I don't know, ten years ago, you probably
would have laughed at me compare the IU job to
the Penn State job. But now, I don't know, I
think that question might have a little bit more relevance
as you hear Kurt Signetti's name whatever, probably on a

(01:54:26):
wish list for Penn State fans more than anything at
this point. How would you view in today's college football
landscape the year of twenty twenty five, how would you
view Penn State's opening versus the Indiana job.

Speaker 5 (01:54:38):
Yeah, I mean, and.

Speaker 9 (01:54:40):
Let's be honest, like every school that's going to have
an opening, there's probably gon be a decent amount of them.
Signette's going to be on those lists, and he should be.
And this is it's kind of the good problem to
have if you're Indiana that everyone wants to hire your coach.
I do think it'll be really interesting. Obviously, there's some
ties Signetti being a Pittsburgh guy, you know, coached at JMU,
which isn't too far outside of that kind of that region.

(01:55:01):
But I'm very curious in the kind of the whether
it's the new revenue sharing house settlement or just this
whole NIL transfer portal, like it has totally kind of
changed things. Now, that doesn't mean that India or Penn
State suddenly like a terrible job. There's gonna be some
obvious pools there if they fire a guy and pay him,
you know, forty five to fifty million dollars just as

(01:55:23):
a buyout. That means that you're feeling pretty secure with
your money and you're going to take a big swing.
So if Signetti is on that shortlist or Penn State, look,
they're gonna they're gonna offer him the move, the moon.
They're gonna, you know, come and give him whatever he
wants Godfather offer to try and get him away. I
think the question will be can whatever Indiana offers, whether
that's you know, from a revenue share standpoint, but also

(01:55:45):
just infrastructure, nil resources, can it be Can it match that?
Can it be close enough? Because now you start getting
into with the rev share, like they're going to give
some money to basketball at Indiana. Obviously that's an important thing.
So how does all that balance? But also, you know,
I do think there's this aspect with Signetty, like Indiana
kind of gave him his shot right at the Power

(01:56:06):
Conference level. He had won everywhere, hadn't really gotten that job.
Does he feel a certain loyalty to Indiana for doing that.
I don't think it's unfair to say, like, yes, if
Penn State wants him, this is going to be a
tough decision for him to make, but I also s
don't think it's unfair to say he might ultimately look
at it and be like, no, I want to be
here in Indiana. You know I can win here. I've
proven that I have everything I need here, and so

(01:56:28):
I think the question will be can whatever Penn State
throws at him, can Indiana match it or at least
come close enough for him to say like, No, this
is where I want to.

Speaker 1 (01:56:37):
Be talking to Justin Williams from the Athletic IU Football
the topic of discussion today. I want to dig down
deeper on how this team is even taking a step
forward over what they did last year. To your comments
just a moment ago. We see Fernando Mendoz has been
a terrific quarterback, and they've got speed, and the lines
on both sides of the football have held up. But
talk about Indiana's defense and how they've been able to

(01:57:00):
keep their offense in games with anybody this year?

Speaker 9 (01:57:03):
Yeah, No, I mean that's that was the story of
the game Saturday. Oregon had been sacked once all year
coming into that game. Indiana comes in and gets to
Dante Moore six times, and some of it was them
creating pressure. Some of it was just whatever they were
scheming up or whatever they were doing in coverage. Dante
Moore clearly wasn't seeing, you know, the field very well
because he just didn't have a good game overall. And

(01:57:24):
so this is a guy that came into the game
as a heisman, you know, favorite hopeful, and Indiana just
you know, kind of put him in a body bag.
And you know, I think the most impressive thing is
the evaluation and development of talent. You know, Signette brought
all those guys from JMU, and JMU had a good team,
but you're not thinking that, Okay, you're going to go
into the Big Ten and then start to dominate. D'Angelo Pond's,

(01:57:47):
you know, be the best cornerback in the country. You know,
Aidan Fisher is a tackling machine. Kamara he brought with them,
you know, all these guys that that he brings with
him from his previous job. There's clearly some identification on
on Signettian, his staff's part, and then some development with
those players that now in year two in the Big Ten,
you know, they're out there dominating against an Oregon team

(01:58:10):
that was like putting up close to fifty points a
game entering that, and so I just have a ton
of respect for that staff and Signetti and what he's
been able to do in terms of you know, if
you just look at recruiting talent, actually think the whole
talent composite, you know, numbers that are out there for recruiting.
I think Indiana still laughs in the Big ten technically,
which is just hilarious because when you watch them play,

(01:58:30):
they're complete unit. They move people on both sides of
the line of scrimmage, and they just have you know,
guys that whether you want to say it's the holes
greater than the some of the parts, or they play
above their ability, whatever, they've kind of figured out the
combination of scheme players and then developing them to be
one of the best teams in the country.

Speaker 4 (01:58:49):
Justin as we look ahead for the rest of the
record season schedule for the Hoosiers, is there a game
that we should be worried about. I'm looking at UCLA
two weeks now, and I'm like, suddenly, they're actually kind
of scary to me. So as much as we have
ridden high on the wave of IU and after that
Oregon win, it feels like Oh my gosh, you're just

(01:59:10):
a shoe win and get a buye into the college
football playoff.

Speaker 6 (01:59:13):
We know how weird this sport can be. So do
you have some games.

Speaker 4 (01:59:16):
I'm looking at Michigan State, Ucla, Maryland, Penn State, Wisconsin,
Purdue to close it out any of those opponents.

Speaker 6 (01:59:22):
Opponents should scare us.

Speaker 9 (01:59:24):
Yeah, I mean this is why, like, you can't play
the schedule game in college football, right because three weeks
ago it's like, man, that that trip to Penn State,
that's going to be really tough. And now all of
a sudden they have an interim coach and their quarterbacks
hurt and same thing. You know Ucla. No one was
expecting Penn State to go out there and get beat
so on paper, no, you're you're looking at this schedule
and you're thinking, like, man, they should be able to
kind of cruise control into the you know, Big Ten

(01:59:47):
championship game, whether that's playing you know, another undefeated team
in Ohio State or whatever happens. But I think this
will also be kind of the next challenge for Indiana, right, Like,
they were always kind of trying to punch through that
ceiling and they had respect. They made the playoff last year,
but again, people weren't necessarily looking at them as the
title contender. Now you have that, you have all the
attention that comes with that. It'll be interesting to see

(02:00:09):
how they respond here down the stretch when the targets
on their back. You know, they have, you know, kind
of everyone gunning for them, and they have games that
you know they're going to be favored. Jeeh, I don't
buy you know, probably close to double dude, it's digits
in every one of these games that's left. It'll be
interesting to see if they can kind of go out
and live up to that. But man, if you're an
IU fan just kind of playing the schedule game and

(02:00:30):
looking on paper, I'm not telling you to go ahead
and book your you know, your stay in Indianapolis for
the for the title game, but you know, maybe at
least pencil.

Speaker 3 (02:00:40):
It in justin last one and correct me if I'm wrong.
You covered Cincinnati when Alec Pierce was.

Speaker 9 (02:00:47):
There, I did, correct.

Speaker 3 (02:00:49):
What do you remember just about like his ascent there,
because you know, I I definitely remember the Indiana game,
the Notre Dame game where Pierce made huge plays, and
then now here obviously in our city, he's turned into
quite the home run hitter on an NFL level. So
what do you remember about Alec Pierce becoming you know,
it took a little bit, but I think coming a

(02:01:09):
big time target there for Desmond Rod.

Speaker 9 (02:01:11):
Yeah, great kid comes from a great, really athletic family.
Two stories stand out to me about covering Peers. So
after his freshman year, which he didn't play much during
bowl practice, they worked him out at a linebacker. And
this is when Marcus Freeman was phillipin sid he was
a defensive coordinator, and I remember Freeman saying, like, if

(02:01:32):
Piers wanted to be a linebacker, if he wanted to
hit and be a defensive player, he could be like
an All American linebacker. He's just like, he doesn't want
to do that. He's a pretty boy. He wants to
be a receiver. He wants to run and you know,
catch sixty yard bombs. But even early on, like when
he you know, hadn't necessarily cracked the rotation and receiver,
they were just trying to find ways to get him
on the field because he was such a you know,
athletic gifted talent. And then the other one that stands

(02:01:53):
out is the COVID, you know when that happened, and
everyone gets sent home for the summer. So we're talking
summer twenty and they finally bring these players back on campus. Everybody.
I mean, this wasn't just Cincinnati, across the country. All
these guys are out of shape, and you know, just
they've been stuck inside. They didn't know what to do.
And Pierce came back and had somehow added like two
inches to his vertical, Like the training staff couldn't believe

(02:02:16):
that this guy came back and he's like, you know,
jumping forty two inches and basically was in better shape
than when he had left. And he was just like, oh, yeah,
I worked out at home with my brothers or whatever.
But those two, like you talk about kind of what
a freakish, you know, player is. He's also super smart.
He has like an engineering degree from Cincinnati, which is
a ridiculously hard program. A really impressive kid. But I

(02:02:36):
always just remember those two things, like them trying to
put him at linebacker because they wanted to get him
on the field, and then everyone coming back out of
shape from COVID, and Pierce is in the best shape
of his life.

Speaker 1 (02:02:47):
Justin thanks for time. This morning. We appreciate it. We'll
talk to you this season moves along, but appreciate your thoughts.
How fun this weekend ay trime.

Speaker 6 (02:02:53):
Thank you ving Justin.

Speaker 1 (02:02:54):
Williams, the Athletic covering IU football, joining us here on
the Payless Liquors Hotline. All right, I'm still feeling generous, Caleb.
You ready to go again?

Speaker 3 (02:03:02):
Yeah, I'm ready.

Speaker 1 (02:03:03):
Text me up two three nine ten seventy two family
four packs to see the Indy eleven on Saturday night
at seven pm against Loudon United. It's a terrific place
to spend the evening with your family. We've got you
hooked up, but you need to write Indy eleven in
a text at two three nine ten seventy two three
nine ten seventy. We'll get two winners before the end

(02:03:24):
of the show. We'll tell you who they are as
we continue next to ninety three five and one oh
seven five The Fan.

Speaker 7 (02:03:31):
If you were listening to the Van Morning Show on
Sports Radio, ninety three five and one oh seven five
The Fans.

Speaker 13 (02:03:39):
Hih one final time here on Wednesday, really enjoined dot combo.
Justin Williams covers college football for the Athletic. That'll be
up on the podcast James the Alec Pierce ans or.
He used to cover the Cincinnati Bearcats and covered Pierce
and told the story about how Marcus Freeman was a
defensive coordinator and during bullprep one year saw Alec Pierce

(02:04:01):
play some linebacker and thought, oh boy, this guy might
have a little defensive uh future here.

Speaker 3 (02:04:07):
And obviously I did not pan out, but I think
it got some people. The YouTube chat going down a
different path of could you name the best starting five colts?
Starting five on the basketball floor? So current cult roster?
What do you got here?

Speaker 6 (02:04:24):
I have j T.

Speaker 4 (02:04:25):
Towy Moloao, who you can check out his high school highlights.
He played with Palo ban Caro, same AAU team. So
lets you know Pallo ban Caro number Antonio Gates vibe
to him like six.

Speaker 6 (02:04:36):
JT to Moloao.

Speaker 4 (02:04:37):
He told me he's nice, nice on the basketball court.
I think you have to go Molly Cox play tage basketball.
That's a default answer right there. Sure Daniel Jones can
get buckets. Okay, So I'm rolling with Daniel Jones and
I think I got my bigs figured out.

Speaker 6 (02:04:53):
Now I need two guards.

Speaker 3 (02:04:55):
I think your point guard's obvious who's my point guard.
I think it's gotta Kenny Moore.

Speaker 6 (02:05:01):
I trust Kenny Moore to get things.

Speaker 3 (02:05:03):
Imagine picking up full court. Yeah, you imagine Kenny Moore TJ.
McConnell just picking each other up full court for the
whole game.

Speaker 4 (02:05:09):
And for what I understand, they're actually, you know, fairly,
you know, familiar with each other and what they've done
in the city. Two undrafted guys, So I'd roll with
them Kenny Moore.

Speaker 6 (02:05:17):
And we need we need to we need a slasher.
We need someone can get to the basket.

Speaker 5 (02:05:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (02:05:21):
Yeah, Oh, I'm trying to think, man.

Speaker 3 (02:05:24):
I feel like Nick Cross would be interesting. No, Nick
Cross strikes me as a dude that might have a
broke jumper.

Speaker 2 (02:05:32):
He's he is, I think one of those football players
that plays basket, right, you know it's in the reck gym.

Speaker 6 (02:05:37):
Oh you know what's.

Speaker 4 (02:05:41):
I'm going with Tyler Goodson because he grew up playing
AU basketball with Ben Shephard.

Speaker 3 (02:05:46):
Oh look at you digging this out.

Speaker 6 (02:05:49):
Yeah, you can tell how much I've gone down his
rabbit hole.

Speaker 3 (02:05:52):
Jones in at the three. If I'm reading your lineup, JT. T. Moiley, Cox,
Daniel Jones, Tyler Goodson, Kennymore. Yeah, that might be my
five they had. I also wanted the quarterback. I went
Anthony Richardson now to be able to point it out here,
and I'm I hand raised on this. Probably should have
Riley Leonard.

Speaker 14 (02:06:11):
Ooh, I actually forgot about legit act like like he
literally Washington, but Riley Leonard by all, I might.

Speaker 4 (02:06:22):
Swap Tyler out or Kenny out with Riley and have
the other one come off the bench as my sixth man.

Speaker 6 (02:06:29):
And you know that might be that might be actually good.

Speaker 3 (02:06:30):
Look, this is literally one of the biggest debates in
that locker room on a daily basis. And I mean
I've covered the NFL now for fifteen years. Every single
year they argue over who is the best basketball player
on the football team. And I feel this a little
bit about following Notre Dame right now, Mark Zachary great
basketball player.

Speaker 6 (02:06:47):
I've been one state championship undefeated.

Speaker 3 (02:06:49):
And they're always asking him, you know, because he's obviously
one of the better basketball players. You know, who's the
best hooper the football team?

Speaker 2 (02:06:56):
If we have Ashton Doulan taking defensive snaps, don't you
think he could play basket ball?

Speaker 9 (02:07:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (02:07:00):
Probably that's probably can you imagine the defensive stopper that.

Speaker 4 (02:07:04):
Yeah, I will say I did hoop with Ar a
couple of years ago, right before he signed his rookie contract,
probably his last public basketball game before he was an
officially employee of the NFL. And yeah, the guy is
athletic is all get out, as you all know. He
was dunking the ball with ease. But the jumper will
certainly suspect. I think that I could in a shooting contest.

(02:07:24):
I serious think that I could probably hold my own
against Ar, which isn't say much because both of us
aren't shooting that great from the outside. So yeah, I
think that would be a fun debate. Maybe I'll bring
it up to day in the locker room, because if
there's one thing to get the guys talking, it's asking
them about other athletic talents and gifts.

Speaker 3 (02:07:42):
I'm not sure I should laugh at this might be
a little in the too soon, but ross here, Drew
Ogletree clearly wouldn't have court vision. That's rough easy Now,
Drew Ogletree suvarious war before the game on Sunday. All right,
you and I will both be up at Colts coming
up later today. Obviously we'll get more into Brett Rippen.

(02:08:04):
Still no official word on that move, by the way,
unless I've missed it.

Speaker 6 (02:08:07):
No, I have not seen it.

Speaker 4 (02:08:08):
I have had the Colt's post notifications on for years
at this point, so.

Speaker 6 (02:08:13):
I tried to miss those things.

Speaker 3 (02:08:14):
Yeah, but they would need to do that before practice starts.
Of course here upcoming they do have an open practice.
They don't do the just handshake, you know. Don't think
the NFL is gonna let that fly there. Obviously, injury
updates Kenny Moore to various ward big time because again
the Chargers have great balance to their wide receiver room.
Drew asked here about Ashton Doolan playing that one defensive snap. James,

(02:08:35):
I know some fans are curious on that. I know
we touched on it earlier in the show, but Louien
Roumo did write some detail on that yesterday.

Speaker 4 (02:08:41):
Yeah, basically just said it was installed, I guess in
theory to be used for Kyler Murray, but they were
n't able to use it. I guess more than that
because you only had to go. You're set in there,
so they use it if the one time did not
get home. And like I said, when I see Ashton
in the locker room today, I'm gonna tell them, hey, man,
they put you out there, you didn't deliver.

Speaker 3 (02:09:01):
Yeah, it was that third and seventeen play. I think
Bersett to McBride if I remember correctly, there on that play.
So Colts back to practice today, relatively quiet night.

Speaker 5 (02:09:11):
I know.

Speaker 3 (02:09:11):
Tomorrow we've got that mon On Spike volleyball game perdueing
Indiana over at Gamebridge Field House. A lot of people
looking forward to that, and then Friday, the Pacers will
have their last preseason game of the year. Caleb great
work filling in. He'll be with us all week long.
We'll be back tomorrow. Jeffly back to close it out
as well. Kevin Bollen, James Boyd signing off
