Twos good Blue Tams.

Speaker 7 (01:11):
Just like that, you have a World Series showdown between
the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Good
morning everyone. Drama, high drama in Major League Baseball last
night as we get ready for the World Series. And
of course the Colt's still taking a breath, breathing in
and living in the afterglow of another dominant victory. They
just keep rolling along. We've got Pacers news today. Rick

(01:32):
Carlisle's gonna stop by. Good morning, Kevin Bowen, Good morning,
Mark Dydon, but he is back from Los Angeles and
whatever that two or three day party window was for James, boy,
we're just happy you're back in in one piece and
ready to go. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Never gonna, you know, feel bad about going to LA.
So that was a nice little trip. Like I told
you all yesterday, got to see one of my best
friends who was my roommate in college. He's now bought
a house out in LA. So you can say he's
doing pretty well for himself, no.

Speaker 7 (01:59):
Question about that. So Monday, after another big Colts victory yesterday,
I know you were out there, Kevin. This team has
just got to feel good about itself and they're rolling.
And what's kind of the vibe out there right now
when you go out to West fifty sixth.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Well, no Meadia availability yesterday from an in person standpoint,
we're all virtual. But yeah, I think they're definitely feeling good.
And you know, you see the reaction post game. I mean, James,
you can probably speak to a better being inside that
locker room, and you know, I felt like this one
was circled a little bit more. And you know, if
you want to start to continue to look at the
AFC South, you've gotten a lot of help here. Recently
got some more help last night with the Houston Texans

(02:34):
losing and EJ. Speed doing EJ Speed things and that game.
So yeah, I think you're in a great, a great position,
and I think they're certainly feeling that now.

Speaker 7 (02:43):
I just love watching those AFC South teams tumble, don't you.
It's just hard to take, isn't it, James.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
If you're a Colts player or fan, certainly not. But
to your point, Kevin, in the locker room, the players
kept saying just like last week, and apparently that was
a motto that Reggie Wayne had back when his team's
a rolling. I think I told you all this yesterday,
and I heard Maaly Cox kind of break it down
when I was asking about the team and how they're
playing so well offensively in particular. But sprinkled in throughout

(03:13):
a lot of the audio that I have, you got
people just in the background yelling due that last week,
ju that last week. And so this team is very confident.
They feel like they can go out there and win
just like last week. And I think this was probably
their most impressive win of the year. And I guess
the good problem to have, which I'm sure you all
discussed yesterday and we'll discuss further today. Is that you
can still, i think, make some tweaks to this roster

(03:35):
to perhaps maximize the opportunity if you build for yourself.

Speaker 7 (03:37):
Well, it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.
And you know, just doing simple math on the way in,
because that's all I'm good for at five point fifteen
in the morning, is the easy addition in distraction. This
team just goes six and four of the final ten games.
They were a twelve win team. James Boyd think.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
About that pretty impressive stuff, honestly.

Speaker 7 (03:52):
I mean, I don't think at this point in time
six and four is all that much out of the question.
You're probably thinking seven and three realistically, the way the
it's been playing. Now, we know, Kevin that the second
half of the season is going to get a little
bit tougher, and you kind of figure that at some point,
you know you're going to have a rough stretch here
or there. But think about that, just six and four
and you're a twelve win team.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Yeah, I mean, it's amazing when you say that out loud,
and it doesn't sound that far fetched whatsoever. Frankly, six
and four sounds like the floor maybe, but yes, the schedule,
to be fair is a little bit more difficult. The
NFL always seems to find a way to humble you,
but right now that humbleness seems to be so far
away from this football team, with how especially offensively, how

(04:34):
surgical they've been.

Speaker 7 (04:35):
All right, then we are just a couple of days
away now from the start of the NBA season. The
ind Enna Pacers will be hosting the Oklahoma City Thunder
on Thursday night, And Kevi, it's just you know, you
got kind of your core four that are ready to go.
You're going to be searching at the center position for
a while. But right now, because of injuries and everything else,

(04:56):
what do you have on the second unit at this
point in time. That's kind of a mystery, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
We might have to ask for Carlo at eight o'clock
if you can suit up. So Rick Carlisle gonna join
us here coming up Tuesdays at eight with him will continue,
So we really appreciate him doing that here for another season. Yeah,
they definitely have some questions, you know, even roster wise,
I know we don't typically get two into maybe the
weeds of an NBA roster compared to an NFL roster.

(05:20):
But right now they really only have one healthy true
point guard. That would be Andrew Nemhard Ray J Dennis,
I guess could be their backup on Thursday night, Quinton
Jackson's little banged up again. We know TJ McConnell's going
to miss, you know, the first ten or twelve games.
They did keep four centers in this show on the roster,
which is a big number because I think a lot

(05:41):
of people out there feel like their best lineup doesn't
include a center that would be we'll be topping there.
So yeah, definitely a lot of questions. And then last
night late for those that stayed up, Aaron E. Smith
two years I guess kicked onto that current contract that
he is already on an extension for him, He's now

(06:02):
on the same timetable as Tyre's Halliburton from a year's standpoint,
and James, I continue to look at the Aaron Nee
Smith contract and think, wow, is this still a steal.
I've always felt like the Nie Smith contract is stealing money,
and I continue to look at it in that light.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Absolutely. I think if he had hit free agency, he
would have got way more than this. You look at
some of the contracts that players are getting. I'm like,
man aaron NEI Smith won. He probably just wants the security.
So I look at it like this. If you want
the security and you want the money to be locked
in right away, then you take what's offered right now,
which was the max he could getting out. From my understanding,
they could have gone to a three year since, but
they chose two, and he gets the forty million dollars

(06:37):
tacked on to the end of his contract. But if
he wanted more money, he would have to play this
contract out obviously, try to become a free agent, and
then you know, see if he can get some students
to chip in. But looking at where he was when
they traded for him, I believe in July of twenty
twenty two he was kind of thrown in as part
of that Malcolm Brogden deal to get him over to
the Celtics, and it didn't work out at its first

(07:00):
championship level team right off the gate when he got
drafted in. And now he's become a piece of what
was the championship caliber team with the Pacers when Halliburn
was healthy and what looks to be a team that
wants to get back to contention after Halliburn returns, and
they want him to be a part of it.

Speaker 8 (07:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (07:15):
The other thing big news in the NBA, Lebron James
is going to be out weeks now with what they're
calling siattica, which is a nerve thing going on in
his lower back, and so we don't know what that
looks like for the Lakers. They've got Luka Dancicz out
there obviously at this point in time. And you know
this is crazy because I saw this, I don't know
at the very end of Roger Clemens's career where he
said he would come back and only pitch after the

(07:35):
All Star break for teams, and teams were like, you
know what, we're making a run down the stretch. I'll
take Roger Clemens for the last two months of a season.
As he started to get older. Do we get to
a point in the NBA where a guy like Lebron
James could possibly say, Hey, you know what, I'll come
back and play the last thirty games of the regular
season in the postseason for you guys in my final
couple of years. It sounds crazy, but could you see
something like that.

Speaker 1 (07:55):
Going on no just because for Lebron, he's been the
most durable superstar ever. Yeah, but I mean if you
look at his moo, he plays basketball. I know people
like do the whole hey, he low manages, he rest
it's I think that Kawhi Leonard is probably like the
face of that. If you look at Lebron's career, he's
played more than any other superstar outside of like Caremadul Jabbar. So,

(08:16):
I mean, I know he's going to be out for
a while, but I would expect when he hits the
ground that he wants to go out there and play because,
as I like to say on social media, hoop is hoop.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
I want to go back to Nee Smith for just
a second because I think when we look back on
that magical run last year, the obvious core memory is
the Halliburton heroics. I mean that is the easy thing
and that you know, five, ten, fifteen years down the road,
that will be the highlight reel that people dial up first.
But I was struck last night just think it back

(08:44):
on Nie Smith and his career here, and you know,
as James said, you know, I don't think a lot
of people put too much stock into his name when
he showed up in that trade for Malcolm Brogden. But
I will never forget the free throw, rebound tip dunk
he had in Cleveland. Yeah, to ignite that comeback. That
comeback does not happen without Aaron E. Smith making that play.

(09:08):
Game one Madison Square Garden Halliburton shot that goes up
to the heavens, that does not happen without Aaron E.
Smith having the flurry of all fourth quarter flurries. I mean,
remember how.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
S three threes he hit bang bang.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
You know, Mike Brien doesn't want to say that when
he's calling a PACER's next game, but because Aaron E.
Smith did that sort of display in that venue as well,
so you know, again, it probably gets lost a little
bit just because of how unbelievable the cinema was around
Tyre's Halliburn and those shots. But on the road, those
two comebacks they don't occur without Nie Smith in two

(09:43):
very different ways. Obviously, the dunk is a lot different
than what he did with all those threes. There, so
very deserved for him, and certainly a huge year with
a lot more on his plate offensively and defensively coming.

Speaker 7 (09:57):
Up, Well, it's gonna be a lot. I still think
it's going to be obviously fascinating to see how they
operate without Halliburton and Miles Turner, who's off to Milwaukee
right now. But I just feel like this team is
is gonna win a lot of games in the middle
of the week against teams that are coming in here
on the second, third or fourth night of road trips,

(10:18):
and I think there's gonna get run ragged. And I
think there's still a core group here that when they
play their thirty minutes together twenty twenty six thirty minutes together, man,
they can they can do some damage. I still believe that, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
There's a possibility. But I'm worried about center.

Speaker 7 (10:32):
Man.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
I'll be lying to you, Jeff, if I didn't mention.

Speaker 7 (10:34):
That, So what could happen against wom Minyama just in
the preseason.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Yeah, and that's you know, Wemby's obviously, like you know,
grade a top tier center. But I'm looking at the
group and just wondering, Okay, who's playable, who's passable?

Speaker 2 (10:46):
And we should mention no extension for Bendick Mather And
that was the other, you know, eve of the season.
NBA starts tonight for those curious pace.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
I actually don't think that either one was like all
that surprising to us or like the fan base. But yes,
you're right, yah.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
I think we've talked about this throughout the offseason. I
think we both parties. Benedict Matherin wants to play this
year out now, the Pacers will still have right of
first refusal. I think they can actually negotiate initially with him.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Once the season ends.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
He'll be a restrict for free as a restrict free
agent there, so Matherin will be in a contract year
upcoming this season. Again, not to me, the most shocking
thing in the world there. So Pacers still have a
couple other roster things to figure out, I think before
Thursday night.

Speaker 5 (11:22):
But it is here.

Speaker 7 (11:23):
It is definitely here. All right. Everything you're gonna need
to know for the rest of your sports day is
coming your way in a moment with a checkdown. In
the meantime, Rick Carlisle slides in at eight o'clock to
talk about the upcoming NBA season, looking forward to that,
and we'll talk Colts throughout the day as well. It's
nine seventy. The fan text line always welcome those things.
You can call us up at two three nine, ten seventy.

(11:44):
When we have a chance to talk to you, we'd
love to do that. It's going to be a busy
Tuesday here at ninety three five and one oh seven
five the fan yew.

Speaker 1 (11:51):
Ye, that's how we do.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
All the morning checkdown on ninety sweet five and one
oh seven five the ban.

Speaker 7 (12:05):
Good morning, it's Tuesday, you wake up. The Indianapolis Colts
are six and one. The Indiana Hoosiers are seven and
oh ranked second in both the coaches and AP polls,
and the number one pre season team in college basketball
in America are the Purdue boiler Makers. It's a good
time to be in the state of Indiana right now. Colts,
as I mentioned, our six and one, they will host

(12:25):
the Tennessee Titans Sunday afternoon for twenty five. I know
not much happening out at West fifty six yesterday, Kevin,
but do we have any kind of injury updates in
the day after at all?

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Nosterday, So Taekwon Lewis day to day was probably the
one update that Changsycin gave that was actually some bit
of information. Sounds like Taverarious Ward Bilbert turn this season
with that kash he's uninjured reserve, but he will be
back at some point and then we'll see on Samson.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Epic found some reports out there that he will miss time.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Shane would neither confirm nor deny that.

Speaker 5 (12:58):
Some people that's about the four kickoff.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
I know it's a bit odd for the Colts to
be in that window with another AFC team. This is
the week of the NFL season where we have the
most bye weeks. I want to say six teams are
on a bye, so you have to slot some games
in the four o'clock window. I want to say the
Cults are one of three games that are into that
four or four to twenty five windows. So there's just

(13:22):
a little bit of reasoning behind it. I could see
at the start of the year on paper, Oh, cam Ward,
Anthony Richardson maybe, so obviously that's not how it's played out.
But yeah, Colts, I believe are one of the two
CBS games coming up this weekend. I think it's Denver
in Dallas the other one.

Speaker 7 (13:39):
Johnny, Yeah, Denver Nallas, Yeah, James.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
We were talking about opening line yesterday.

Speaker 7 (13:43):
The Colts are fourteen and a half point home favorites
over the Tennessee Titans. You don't see two touchdown favorites
in the NFL very often. If I'd have told you
in August that, yeah, by the time they get to
that Tennessee game, there'll be two touchdown favorites. You know,
looked at me like I had was cross side.

Speaker 8 (14:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
I mean, honestly, I wouldn't have known what to expect
from this team, or I would expect cam Ward be
injured or something like that. But honestly, the way I
look at their offense, I might take the over like
they are scoring points at a very high rate. I'm
trying to find weaknesses in the offense. I really can't.
I mean, I'm probably niitpicking if I do so. To me,
this offense is super Bowl caliber. The numbers they are

(14:24):
putting up our stuff we haven't seen in decades and
his better offenses at least through the first seven weeks,
and they had with Peyton Mann Andrew Luck. So that
says a lot about the level they're operating at, especially
with Daniel Jones and JT leading the way.

Speaker 7 (14:35):
All right, last night doubleheader on Monday Night Football to
clean up the Week seven of the National Football League,
the Detroit Lions got a great performance from Jamier Gibbs,
a career night for him, over two hundred and twenty
total yards, two touchdowns. He had it rolling Tampa Bay
and Baker Mayfield had trouble getting things going. But more
importantly for the Buccaneers, Mark, did you see that their

(14:59):
big gun Mike Evans goes down trying to make a catch,
breaks a collar bone. Will be out most of the
rest of the season, they're saying right now.

Speaker 5 (15:06):
Yeah, I thought he had a concussion just the way
he got hit and was kind of laying there, and
then it came out later that Yeah, likely out for
the season with a broken common man.

Speaker 7 (15:13):
Oh man.

Speaker 5 (15:13):
I love Mike Evans. He's a baller and it sucks
to see him go out. And you know, Baker Mayfield,
he's doing his best out there, but no Mike Evans.

Speaker 7 (15:21):
That stinks. Yeah. Also in the later game, the Seattle
Seahawks won a fairly sloppy game over the Houston Texans.
Twenty seven to nineteen was the final score there. Sam
Darnold two hundred and thirteen yards, one touchdown, one interception,
but Jackson Smith and Jigba again eight catches, one hundred
and twenty three yards and a touchdown. He is wide
receiver one plus one right now. He is on fire

(15:42):
Mark dyked and just some of the fantasy numbers he's
been putting up making people happy.

Speaker 5 (15:46):
He's incredible. Yeah, Mam Donald living up to the money,
big money contract he got too.

Speaker 7 (15:51):
All right, college football coming up this weekend. This was interesting.
UCLA will come into Memorial Stadium. I guess number two Indiana.
I love. Kurt Signetti said yesterday James Boyd. He's treating
UCLA as an undefeated three and zero team since making
their coaching change, and that's how he's framing it with
his players this week.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Whatever my games you gotta play. I probably trust whatever
cursing that he is doing, just because it's worked so far.
But I mean, I'm not really buying that. But I
do think that they're playing much better football than anywhere
early in the season, so it should be an interesting game.
I think of the games that are left on the schedule,
that is one that kind of I'm looking at, like,
I don't get trapped and make sure if you're IU,
you try to clo out the regular season undefeated.

Speaker 7 (16:33):
All right, let's go to Major League Baseball last night,
Game seven of the American League Championship Series, Mariners on
the road in Toronto, controlling the game. They lead it
three to one, but they put two runners on in
the bottom of the seventh inning and George Springer came
to the plates.

Speaker 6 (16:49):
Spare getna flyball to left field that goes, She's gone.

Speaker 7 (16:56):
That was that four to three, big moment for the
Blue Jays, back to the World Series for the third
time in franchise history, denying the Mariners Kevin their first
opportunity to ever get to the postseason classic. That's just
crazy to me.

Speaker 5 (17:11):
Yeah, it felt awful for the Mariners there.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
I mean, you get the Rodriguez big dumper home runs,
you think you're sitting there pretty and then boom, George Springer,
who has certainly had October heroics before.

Speaker 5 (17:21):
He does that.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
To you how that atmosphere looked unbelievable. But yeah, there
was part of me that's rooting for the Mariners. But
as Mark Dighton said yesterday, now we wave the al
flag in the World Series, go Blue Jay's go soon.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
As soon as that ball went off the bat of
Springer mcnt is gone. I mean, it was just moon
vintage him.

Speaker 7 (17:39):
Got to see if somebody can beat the Los Angeles Dodgers,
who seemingly have all stars at every position and go
about four deep in the rotation.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
Mark, well, he gets shoeo tany performance from the other night.
I mean, you'll be a short series.

Speaker 7 (17:52):
All right. Some interesting news coming out about Caitlin Clark.
Stephanie White was speaking yesterday, still listed as week to
week as she returns from a groin and ankle injury,
still only playing two on two, some light three on three.
Stephanie White said, we don't want her to play five
on five yet, We've got time. We'll take it slow.
That ankle injury, Caitlin Clark said the worst she's ever suffered.

(18:14):
Maybe it was just a lot worse than we ever
even thought.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
Perhaps I believe she she being. Stephanie White spoke to
Adi Starr about this on their podcast, So chok that
out after our show, you know, if you're interested. But
I would say, when it comes to Caitlin personally, I'm like,
just let me know when she's back out there playing
real hoops, and we certainly hope that is sooner rather
than later.

Speaker 7 (18:35):
We certainly do. NBA does open up tonight as Kevin
said a moment ago, the Houston Rockets, fresh off resigning
Kevin Durant to an extent, will be taking on the
defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder. That one will come your
way at seven point thirty this evening on Peacock and
then Warriors and Lakers later on again. Lebron James out
for a number of weeks. They're saying with Siattica to

(18:57):
start the NBA season. Anything else you guys want to
throw in right now?

Speaker 5 (19:00):
Vin, I'm already annoyed how many streaming services you need
for the NBA this.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
I was just gonna say that, Mark, Yes, so.

Speaker 8 (19:05):
This is all?

Speaker 1 (19:06):
Is it not on NBC? Is it only on Peacock,
it's his NBC slash Peak. Yeah, it's on It's on
regular TV.

Speaker 5 (19:10):
This is open, but there will be games that are
just strictly on Peak.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
Right, You'll be looking for Clarify everybody tonight tonight NBC
and Peacock. You will get an.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
NBC doubleheader tonight. You want to have to Peacock It
best to Matthew Graves and Indiana State so announced yesterday
just sounded horrific. A triple bypass surgery was needed for
him yesterday morning. Have heard nothing but I don't know
Matthew personally, but I've heard nothing but unbelievable things about
him as as a human, as a basketball coach. So

(19:39):
best of the Indiana State community and certainly Matthew Graves
and his you know, effort to get back on the sidelines.

Speaker 7 (19:45):
Yeah, that is I'll tell you first, that scary stuff
when they have to start working on your insides right there.
So we certainly hope that he's going to be okay
moving forward, all right, coming up at eight o'clock conversation
with Rick Carlisle to kick things off for the twenty
five twenty six NBA season. We'll be talking colts in
the nine o'clock era as well with Joel a. Erkson.
So it's going to be a big busy morning here.

(20:06):
I'm ninety three five and one to seventy five the
Fan can't wait to spend it with you. Two three, nine,
ten seventy is how you get back at us. Good
Tuesday morning, Welcome into the Fan Morning Show. Rick Carlisle
coming your way at eight o'clock. The guys will have
a conversation with him about the upcoming NBA season. We'll
check out some of the texts that people are sending

(20:27):
in on this Tuesday morning. This is an anonymous one.
I like this though, for both of you guys. Just
had an epiphany I haven't heard discussed. Why don't we
trade Alec Pearson maybe either Quitty pay or a lat
To as well, for a top five or ten edge
rusher that could be available. James, you wrote an article

(20:47):
in The Athletic today about going all in if you're
the Colts. Are we starting to look or think about
things like that as we move forward?

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Yeah, that article was from yesterday, but it's something I'd
definitely want to revisit more this week, especially being two
weeks away from the trade deadline. But I will say
this to that question, I immediately went deaf as soon
as you said Alec Pierce. He's not going anywhere. He
is arguably their best receiver this year. So I do
think there is some players Adie Mitchell or somebody else

(21:18):
you can look at two package to try to go
get someone. But also if you're going to get edge
rusher at the deadline, I also don't think it'll be
like a top five guy at that position, because those
guys won are huge contracts, you probably want to try
to get somebody who's you know, mid tier proven. Trey
Henderson is somebody that obviously comes to mind because he's

(21:39):
an expiring contract. But I do think that that big
win for the Bengals last week maybe changed things for
their future at the deadline. So that's kind of where
I'm at with it. But Alec Pierce trade, Oh no,
absolutely not.

Speaker 7 (21:53):
The question remains though, do you think Chris Ballard would
possibly do something coming off an offseason where he was
very aggressive and here there are six and one scored
more points than anybody in the in the league, but
defense seems to be a problem. Uh, if you're looking
long term and you have big aspirations, what do you
think that What do you think happens, especially with new ownership.

(22:14):
Does it change the entire dynamic?

Speaker 1 (22:15):
Yeah, it's a great question. I mean I think they should.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
You know, Ballart obviously changed his tune you know, back
in free agency, very much needed and I think you're
reaping some of the benefits of that.

Speaker 5 (22:28):
Now this is a little different.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
You know, you obviously would be partying ways with another
draft pick, which you know, for Chris Ballard, that's you know,
a little bit children like in how he likes to build.

Speaker 9 (22:37):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
But to your point, Jeff, they've never been in the
situation under him, and we know past rush means a
lot to him as well, So I think you should.
You know, I probably am with James a little bit
more that that trade idea sounds a little bit more
Madden Video gaming to me than anything. I think you
got to be realistic and kind of a middle round

(22:58):
pick and you're probably not gonna get some do that
has you know, a slew of twelve SAX seasons on
his resume, But just offer some juice to a group
that I think really really needs it right now. If
you look at the last month, I want to say,
opposing quarterbacks are average a like three thirty against the Colts,
three thirty five maybe against the Colts. If you go

(23:18):
back these last four games, it's the second worst mark
in the NFL this season if you look at any
four game stretch. So you know, I think you got
to live in reality with you know how the last
month has been for this passing defense, and for me,
your pass rush can impact that more than coverage. You
can coverage wise, I think you can talk yourself into Okay,
at various Ward's going to come back at some point
this season. You know, we'll see if Jalen Jones ever happens.

(23:41):
I don't see any of those names though necessarily at
pass rusher popping up, so that's probably why I would
entertain it as well.

Speaker 7 (23:47):
I'm just curious how much of those big yardage numbers,
and those are huge yardage numbers, by the way, how
much of that is chalked up to a couple of
these games just garbage time where teams are just trying
to throw the ball over the field to keep up.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
I wouldn't put much stock into that at all. Honestly,
I thought the Chargers were in that game until the
Forest Buckner and got that sack on their last drive
to kind of push them back, and then Zaia Franklin
made that great play down the middle of the field
on lab McConkey for the pass breakup, and they ultimately
forced turnover on downs. But if you look at what
the charge were able to do in that second half,
I mean, the Colts couldn't stop them at all, and

(24:22):
in a fourteen point loss. Now, give credit where credit
is due, the defense forced two turnovers in the red zone.
So Grover Stewart and Nick Cross deserve a ton of
praise for that, because ultimately, I think in this league
turnovers determined a lot of who wins and who loses.
But no, I am not convinced that this was just
garbage time. No, these teams are going out here and
beating you. And if you look back at the Arizona game,

(24:43):
that wasn't garbage time either. They went down the field
and nearly beat you on a fourth down, you know,
last second pass. So I think they definitely need to
be much better when it comes to pass defense.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
James, you bring up the Buckner play plays probably plural.
He's so good, he the game, so good, a play
that Jeff, you and I should have mentioned yesterday and
we did not, and was such a play that if
it goes the other way, fans are just ripping this player,
because I would argue he's the most ripped cult player

(25:14):
maybe not named Dadi Mitchell. How about thirty yards down
the field in coverage Zia Franklin on Lad McConkie on
that third and twenty two. That was play number on
nineteen of the drive, twenty of the drive. Zara Franklin
e'ts someven out. The dude plays every snap, and yes,
has this season not been at the level that I

(25:34):
think maybe you would like it to be. Yeah, I
think that's fair. But what a big time play. I mean,
that is a dream for Justin Herbert. I get my
best white out on a linebacker thirty yards down the
field on a third and a million. I mean, that
is a you couldn't have asked for a better matchup there.
And there's Franklin not panicking, not committee a penalty, looking

(25:56):
like a dB frankly and making a great play on
the ball to knock it away. And if they score
there one potession game, who knows three point thirty to go?

Speaker 5 (26:05):
Yeah to James's point.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
One score game, they might do the weird thing that
teams sometimes do.

Speaker 1 (26:10):
They go for two.

Speaker 2 (26:11):
Initially, they maybe try to cut it to six there
right there, and now the pressure is really on the Colts.
They still have had two timeouts the Chargers and the
two minute warning. Big time play from Zire Franklin and
really a pretty unique play for a linebacker to be
that far down the field. Play nineteen of the drive,
play whatever seventy of the game. Probably for Zaire and

(26:32):
he just steps up and has a huge, huge pass
pass deflection.

Speaker 7 (26:36):
Yeah, and that you're right. We didn't talk about that
a little bit yesterday, and that's a huge play for
a guy that has been criticized a lot this year.
And it's funny. We'll hear some sound later on today.
But I was listening to Shane Steichen on Colts Round
Table last night. He kind of seems okay with where
the defense and the rush if the pass was just
at this point in time. He talked about all the

(26:56):
pressures they got and how that caused Justin Herbert to
make some misson in that football game.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
Well, I'll say this love shame, but he says a
lot of things I would imagine differently behind closed doors.
And when has he ever said anything that is remotely
controversial when it comes to his team or what they
might upgrade at. I was asking him yesterday about the
trade deadline. He gave a typical coach answer, Oh, I'll
leave that to the GM. You know, he always going
to get better. But yeah, I'm not surprised he said that.

(27:21):
But internally, I would imagine the conversation between him and
Lou and Rumo is different.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Yeah, he occasionally does this where publicly James he downplays things, Yeah,
which he should.

Speaker 1 (27:30):
I mean I wouldn't go out there like, oh man,
I past us stake.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
No.

Speaker 2 (27:32):
I mean I think you can walk a little bit
of a line of hey, we need to get better there,
you know, something along those lines where you don't have
to call individually call out guys. But you would be
naive to think that right now, with the Colts are
getting defensively from that area, is playoff worthy or however
you want.

Speaker 7 (27:48):
To view it.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
As you play some better quarterbacks on the schedule, there
and actions will speak louder than those words and actions
will happen, you know what, two weeks from today or
within the next two weeks, I should say, NFL trade
deadline fourteen days away.

Speaker 7 (28:02):
So they've got some time and maybe they look and
they see what's going on against Tennessee and maybe they
want to see it. Don Look, if there's ever a
team to dominate, there's a reason they're a fourteen and
a half point favorite. This might be the time to
pin your ears back and go for it and see
what you can really do.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
Yeah, but I feel like we had the conversation last
week with the Chargers hits every week. I mean they
had no offensive linemen that were I mean they had
down several starters, down several backups, and I believe in
the first series of the game, Kevin one of their
linement went down then, So to not have more pressure
on Justin Herbert throughout that game, I think it's a
bit concerning.

Speaker 7 (28:35):
Now.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I will say to Forest Buckner was absolutely dominant, but
I feel like he's been the only consistent guy who's
able to get pressure on the quarterback. And as you
look at some of the advanced numbers or just use
your general eyes, he gets double more than anybody. And
I think you do that because one he's a great player,
but two you're not worried abou anybody else getting the quarterback.

Speaker 5 (28:54):
I would like the pass rush to get better. I
would like it to get better in a hurry, especially
with the Week nine opponent coming off. I would like
to bolt to tee off on their quarterback, who I
will not name, who's Week nine mark the Pittsburgh Steelers.
What did you say, Sunday Night Football is this week
Sunday Night.

Speaker 7 (29:09):
Football is it is going to be the uh.

Speaker 8 (29:15):
Steelers.

Speaker 1 (29:16):
That's a dream matchup.

Speaker 10 (29:17):
For you.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
That's a dream match. We talked about it yesterday. That's
the meteor game.

Speaker 7 (29:26):
Yeah for a tie.

Speaker 5 (29:27):
I've never been more of a Mark more the button
for the meteorologist. I'm like, do we have any like meteorites,
comets coming through? Can we have a dinosaur situation happen?

Speaker 1 (29:38):
What are we doing here over that man?

Speaker 8 (29:42):
Man?

Speaker 5 (29:43):
At least the velociraptor.

Speaker 7 (29:45):
You realized I had to actually say the names of
the teams. He was not going to say the names
of those teams.

Speaker 5 (29:50):
That's a disgusting I mean, it is going to be
a hate watch. I'm going to be not rooting for
both teams to lose. I don't even want to tie.
I just want them to both get losses somehow, no ties.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
Uh, the Steelers, if you're wondering, are home underdogs against
the Packers right now?

Speaker 5 (30:06):
That's fine. So Michael Parsons, you got paid all this money,
Go go go get that guy.

Speaker 7 (30:11):
But if it takes Aaron Rodgers to have like a
two hundred and ninety yard three touchdown game, Mark Physic
okay with that, I'm okay with whatever I would like.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
I would like, I mean, I would like the Steelers
to win obviously, but I like it to be on
the running game and Aaron Rodgers throws like four picks
in eighty yards.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
Mark wants the guy the Green Bay Packers lineman to
Michael Parsons Joe on his back like his own teammate
did last week, which is hilarious by the way.

Speaker 8 (30:41):
Yeah, what.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Colse Liman jumped on Daniel Jones like that? I feel
like Shane Stikeen would like I.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
Thought Rogers would lose it. Yeah, when he first went down,
got some sciatica.

Speaker 7 (30:54):
Going on or something. That's Mark's word of the day. Sciatica.

Speaker 5 (30:59):
Ah, that's cold weather. My shoulders hurting like Rodney Dangerfield
didn't catty like, oh my arm it's broken.

Speaker 7 (31:05):
Another guy who's not your problem anymore is Justin Field's
done as the quarterback of the Jets. Al righty Jets stink.

Speaker 5 (31:10):
Aaron Glenn might be a one year coach because that
that looks like a complete train wreck.

Speaker 7 (31:15):
But we'll always have him sprinding down the sidelines, though,
won't we to September that was whoever matched that up
was great.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
And to James's point, Cincinnati plays the Jets this week,
so you know the Bengals could win another game, which
would whatever keep I feel like everyone is sending me, hey, Hendrick,
send this or you know, Cincinnati defender that. It's like, well,
if they keep winning and they didn't trade for Joe
Flacco to go tank, they tried to save their season,
so it's gonna have to take I would say two
straight losses for them to all of a sudden be

(31:44):
sellers of the deadline.

Speaker 7 (31:45):
If that, well, they are only three and four, but
check this out. All three of their wins have come
within the conference, so not only a game and a
half behind Pittsburgh, who's already had a bye week, but
they've got games still to a game is still to
play against Pittsburgh, and they're three and one in conference play,
which you know, when it comes down to wildcard spots,

(32:06):
that's what's going to make a difference right there. So
if I'm the Cincinnati Bengals, I'm sitting there going, hey,
if we can just play even five hundred or one
game over five hundredun til Joe Burrow gets back, we're
right where we.

Speaker 1 (32:16):
Need to be.

Speaker 2 (32:17):
James, when's the last time he played pick up?

Speaker 1 (32:20):
It's been a few weeks because of the schedule. Usually
up play jam V on Sunday's looking forward to hopefully
getting a run in this upcoming Sunday because of the
four PM or four thirty ish kickoff.

Speaker 2 (32:30):
Pacers might need you for some backup PG clock coming
up Thursday.

Speaker 1 (32:34):
Well, I imagine they're trying to win the game, so no,
they'll need me.

Speaker 2 (32:36):
I literally have no idea who their backup point guard
will be Thursday night.

Speaker 1 (32:40):
That is very interesting, especially because the waiver I think
the waiver deadline kind of passed, so you have to
figure out, you know, what other avenues you might go
through to get somebody in there.

Speaker 2 (32:50):
But and just to go over everything, Yeah, obviously out
I know his situation. Andrew Nemhart is your starter. TJ
McConnell injures his hamstring and the preseason opener he's going
to be out at least a couple weeks into the
regular season. They bring in Well, first it was gonna
be Delawn right right, and then whatever the physical doesn't
clear Morris, Oh yeah, Monte Morris, if you go back, yes,

(33:10):
thank you for that. That doesn't work out, and then
Delawn Wright situation, how long did that last?

Speaker 1 (33:18):
That can cuss in that game with the same.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Game that McConnell got hurt, right, Yeah, so then he's gone.
They bring in Cameron Payne. They clearly don't like what
they saw from Cameron Payne for a couple of games.
Amidst all of this, Quinton Jackson, who we've seen, you know,
be on a two way contract and actually I think
when he's gotten a little bit of clock with the
NBA team, Yeah, he gives you a little gives you
a little energy. He hurts his hamstring. It sounds like

(33:41):
he won't be ready for Thursday night. So if you're
looking at healthy point guards, I guess it's ray J Dennis.
But do you have Jerris Walker point forward it with
the second unit?

Speaker 1 (33:54):
That's a great question to ask for Carlisle, because I
have I don't know, it's tough. I almost want to
be like Matherin. You're a ball handler, can you bring
it up a couple of times? I know it's not
your nature, you're more of a score slash slasher, But
I mean, you're looking at at this point, how many
bodies do we have just to throw out there to
hopefully alleviate some pressure on Andrew Nimphah, which is or

(34:16):
we were kind of worried about coming into the season,
and I already had questions before the injuries, and now
I have more because you're putting so much on the
plate of Nimhart's off this season. And I get it,
this is what I'm sure he welcomes, but not to
this degree right out the gate.

Speaker 7 (34:30):
It's crazy too. I mean, yesterday was everybody was making
their preseason predictions on how the NBA season is going
to go, and and Most Vialuable Player Nikola jokis getting
a lot of love for that, and I get all that,
but they came to over unders again on a lot
of these sites, and I've just I just picked one
here at cbssports dot com. Indiana Pacers under thirty seven
and a half wins. I get it, with all the injuries,

(34:50):
even starting the season off.

Speaker 1 (34:52):
I get it.

Speaker 7 (34:52):
The two of your five guys are are gone from
the starting lineup last year. I just feel like this
team is going to find a way to win their
share of games in the forty to forty two to
forty three range. I can't get past that feeling. I
think they're just gonna win a bunch of games when
teams are are a little bit down and a little
bit tired, and they're just gonna outlast a lot of

(35:13):
these teams.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
I don't know, Jeff, I'm skeptic, callready just because of
the injuries. It's hard just miss how hurt they are
going into the year. And I think a lot of
folks as much as they love the rest of the group,
And I find myself doing this to a degree when
I look at the Pacers. It's like, I don't want
to discredit how great of a player Tyre's Halliburton is,
and he might be worth ten wins himself outright. So

(35:37):
you look at what they did last year when they finished,
and you take the best player, one of the best
point guards in the world, off of that team, it's
hard to absorb that. And like you said, you're also,
you know, kind of just figuring out what you're gonna
do at center because you are notably worse there too.

Speaker 8 (35:53):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (35:54):
Myles Turner left, you might have a traja and he'll
get boom when he comes back, all those things, but
that doesn't change the fact that he was a much
better option at center than what they have right now.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
You know a huge reason why I've been so bullish
on the pacers in recent years is because of the
eighty two night grind. I feel like they're built depth wise.
So to your point, Jeff, outlast teams to handle back
to backs better to Hey, we're gonna run you into
the ground here for forty eight minutes and you better
get on your track shoes or you know it's not
gonna go well for you. Is that still a superpower?

Speaker 1 (36:27):
That's a great question.

Speaker 7 (36:28):
Gonna be tough right off the bat with all the
problems you just talked about in the bench, there's no questions.

Speaker 2 (36:32):
That still And if you just played the game is
probably what a lot of national people do, if you
just played the game, because what do you see in
all these little preseason you know graphics on these websites.

Speaker 5 (36:41):
You know, they they shrig it down.

Speaker 2 (36:42):
To what three sentences on each team they throw in
last year's record, And the other thing they probably throw
in is additions. Subtractions, Right, who's new, who's left? Okay, subtractions?
Tyreus Halliburton, Miles Turner? Who are the additions?

Speaker 7 (37:00):
Well, And to drill down on that, the CBS article
is talking about what's their identity without Halliberton?

Speaker 1 (37:06):
Are the additions? Like Yeah, Yeah, like Jay Huff right now,
I'm serious trolling. I mean, Jay Huff is an addition.

Speaker 2 (37:14):
All the additions are internal hope and growth of Matherin
jump Walker, Jackson healthy healthy. Yeah, and again I'm still
bullish on north of forty. But I get why there
are some people out there. They just look at it
of Hey, you know, thirty teams across the league. I
think the Pacers, and I know it's a dangerous game
to play it, I think they've largely earned benefit of

(37:35):
the doubt. And again, I know that's a little bit
of like, oh boy, okay, you know, is that true
true belief? But that's where I'm at on it. But
you know, if you look at and say, all right,
you're taking one of the best point guards in the world.
You're taking away a you know, ten year guy at
center who's been a pretty reliable player for you, I
get why there's a little bit of pass.

Speaker 7 (37:56):
Yeah, they say their margin for injuries is minimal. There's
even an argument to trade so some of the older players.

Speaker 8 (38:01):
TJ.

Speaker 7 (38:01):
McConnell will be thirty five when the twenty seven playoffs
roll around, probably makes more sense for him to participate
in the twenty twenty six postseason on a team that
plans to compete in those and he's not the only
pacer that fits that description. Indiana, like the Boston Celtics,
has a rare chance to add cheap labor with a
top draft pick. If they're on the borderline, they'll surely

(38:22):
be tempted to take it. Interesting interesting stuff. So we'll
talk to Rick Carla about all that stuff coming up
at a minute again. The NBA season kicks off tonight
with a couple of games. They will be a doubleheader
on NBC. Was last time we saw prime time outside
of the playoffs basketball on network television? Kevin, NBC's got
basketball back. It's kind of their their big tip off

(38:45):
for the season tonight. That's we haven't seen that much.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Is Grady on the call for one of these games.
He's with NBC right amongst a couple of other he's
gonna wear this year. I assume Mike Turrico is probably
doing the first game, right, Yeah?

Speaker 1 (39:00):
And it isn't Michael Jordan doing something? Is that with
Prime or was that with NBC?

Speaker 5 (39:04):
I think it's NBC, but I don't know exactly.

Speaker 1 (39:06):
I mean, like it's Jordan's gonna be like in the.

Speaker 7 (39:08):
Like I don't know, commenting on second quarter back in
the studio here and Michael Jordan.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
Yeah, but I'm curious here from them, like he's the
best player ever, so you know, what does he have
to say about today's stars, in the state of the
league and things of that nature. I mean, we really
hear from him.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
Well, the Pacers raise a Eastern Conference banner Thursday night,
Will they do anything Thursday night?

Speaker 1 (39:29):
That's a good question. I don't know, if you if opportune,
they probably should. I'm trying to think, and I don't know,
I have to trying to picture like the Raptors in
my head. I'm literally trying to picture the Raptors. I
swear there's an Eastern Conference champions banner, is or not?
I don't know. I feel like my mine always, my
eyes always goes towards the jerseys and like, you know,
thinking that Nancy Leonard should be up there as well.
I would imagine at some point. But yeah, that's a

(39:52):
good question. And I don't say this is like a
joke either. I feel like, if you make it to
the conference finals, it's fine there like this isn't this is.

Speaker 2 (39:59):
Not wild participant whatever. Mark thought the language was on that.
What do you say, What do you think it was
on it?

Speaker 5 (40:06):
Mark said it again.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
Did you think it said wild card participant?

Speaker 5 (40:09):
Yes, wild or AFC final. I forget what it said exactly, Yeah,
wild card participant or wild card crazy.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
There's no way it said participant on.

Speaker 7 (40:19):
I have to I have to find it.

Speaker 5 (40:20):
I took a picture on like six phones ago that
side by side.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
There's no way you know Addison's soccer ribbons she got
from the end of the season.

Speaker 5 (40:28):
Hey, if you've got to, I mean, if you filled
some space he put out whatever he can. I need
to find that picture.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
I'm totally good to the Eastern Conference final banner. Yeah,
we got a text here about kin tail and Peter
bring up the ball, Ben Sheppard.

Speaker 1 (40:44):
You know what I did, like what I saw from Taylor.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
I like, this is the second round pick out of
what liberty right? Yes, the analytics guy that you know
defied all these crazy analytics as a shooter and a
dunker in college, and I thought he showed a little
bit more that I was unfamiliar with this game would
be the best way to put it. And I got
familiarized prety quick, and I kind of like what I saw.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
So KB with the Shack reference. I wasn't familiar with
your game. Slightly different tone of voice with that.

Speaker 5 (41:13):
Uh it was twenty it was twenty fourteen AFC finalist.

Speaker 7 (41:18):
That's what it said.

Speaker 5 (41:20):
Yeah, see the.

Speaker 2 (41:20):
Finalist part Like ah, but but this would be different,
this would be you won, you want a conference conference?

Speaker 7 (41:27):
Yeah, I don't have a problem with it. The top
two play by play guys for NBC, although I'm not
finding tonight's assignments, Mike Turka and Noah Eagle.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
Yeahmul Crawford.

Speaker 1 (41:39):
I want to say, there's a lot of people that
did like the whole Amazon thing, and I think it's
Grady on a part of that. I think he's a
part of the Amazon crew. But I think both.

Speaker 10 (41:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (41:47):
Yeah, I think by the g Grady's got very proud
of money. And by the way, the Pacers, they got
the Thunder Thursday, and then they go on the road.
The Pacers schedule first like seven and is tough. Yeah,
and they go out easing.

Speaker 1 (42:00):
It was like welcome home. He's like a three game
road trip.

Speaker 8 (42:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
Right after and then if I'm not mistaken, I think
the Miles Turner return game is early in the season.
I want to say it's a Monday in November. So yeah,
it's a very challenging slate. I think out of the
gate all right, a lot.

Speaker 7 (42:13):
To talk about. NBA season kicks off tonight, the Pacers
get rolling at home Thursday night, the head coach of
the Indiana Pacers, Rick Carlisle, stops by for his Tuesday
Chat next on ninety three five and one to seven
five the fifth.

Speaker 2 (42:26):
Eight o'clock on a Tuesday, And I think I speak
for a lot of listeners out there, certainly some that
have reached out over the years and it's their favorite
time of the week when it comes to this show.
And we are very appreciative of Rick Carlisle joining us
again for another season here Tuesdays at eight o'clock as
the Pacers get things underway. Coming up Thursday night, it'll

(42:47):
be Pacers in Thunder. It is a national broadcast as
they kick off the twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season.
Let's head of the Payoffs Liickers Hotline right now and
he is the head coach of the Indiana Pacers joining us.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
Coach Carlisle, morning to you, how are you.

Speaker 10 (43:02):
Fair well? How are you.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
We are wonderful. Thank you again for the time this
season obviously a ton to get to. Let's start with
the news item for those that maybe went to bed
early last night. Reportedly a two year extension for Aaron E.

Speaker 7 (43:16):
Smith.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
I brought it up earlier, coach, you know, to me,
I look back on the playoffs last year and you know,
his put back dunk against Cleveland just spearhead that comeback. Obviously,
the flurry of threes he hit in MSG to kind
of spearhead that comeback as well. I just think he's
such a valuable cog to what you guys are all about.
What has he meant to you and how have you

(43:37):
seen him grow in your time with him here.

Speaker 10 (43:41):
Well, it's been great to see and be a part of.

Speaker 9 (43:45):
I think the bottom line is he's a he's a
proven starter for us, and you know, the opportunity to
extend a guy a couple of years. So now I
think he's under contract for four years, including this year
that we're headed into. So it's great news for the organization.

Speaker 10 (44:04):
Certainly.

Speaker 9 (44:04):
I think he's he's very happy about it, and there's
been a lot of growth. You know, here's a kid
that barely got in the games when he was with
the Celtics, and you know, a lot of that had
to do with the guys that were ahead of him.
A lot of them were great players, et cetera. But
this has been an amazing opportunity for him and he's

(44:25):
taken advantage of it and he's really helped us rare coomers.

Speaker 1 (44:28):
Do you think the success that Aarony Smith has had
the change of sceneery here in Indiana can have a
trickle down effect on other players just seeing like you said,
he didn't, you know, perhaps have the opportunity you wanted
early on, but kept grinding the way and now he's
looked at as one of the best two way players
in the league.

Speaker 9 (44:45):
Well, I think the organization looked at his situation and
basically said, this is a guy that any team in
the entire league.

Speaker 10 (44:55):
Would love to have. He's versatile, he is skilled.

Speaker 9 (45:02):
His shooting is you know, we we've seen what he's
he's able to be shooting the ball, and it just
made too much sense to uh to figure out a
way to get this thing done.

Speaker 10 (45:13):
And yes, I do think that this was one of
the things.

Speaker 9 (45:18):
His development that has made the Pacers, you know, more
of a more of a destination in terms of the
conversation of you know, free agency and things.

Speaker 10 (45:27):
Like that, and so.

Speaker 9 (45:30):
A lot of a lot of very powerful reasons to
get it done. And obviously everyone's very happy.

Speaker 2 (45:38):
Pager's back to practice today again. Thursday night. They will
open up the season with thunder Rick Carlisle with us
here on the Payless Slickers hotline coaches of Now, you know,
on paper, you know Andrew Nemhart and then who knows
behind him? From a point guard standpoint, do you kind
of view this as a by committee approach until TJ
McConnell returns or how are you looking at point guard

(46:00):
particularly the depth there heading end of the season opener?

Speaker 9 (46:04):
Yeah, I mean there's gonna be a lot of bi
committee stuff going on with the point guard position, with
the center commit position, and and that's that's okay.

Speaker 10 (46:15):
I mean, there's great opportunity there.

Speaker 9 (46:18):
We've had a we've had a three week training camp
to look at and evaluate a lot of these guys.
But an NBA season is so long, it's six months
and three weeks. You learn some things, but you know,
certainly as we get into the heat of it here

(46:39):
and you know, the schedule at the beginning of the
year is no joke.

Speaker 10 (46:42):
I mean, there's just uh, you know, a lot of
great teams, a lot of road games.

Speaker 9 (46:48):
You know, there'll be a lot of challenges and under
those circumstances you find out even more.

Speaker 2 (46:55):
I know he currently is sidelined from an injury standpoint.
I don't know if he would have been involved in
your point guard conversation, but we did see the news
yesterday with rookie cam Jones arrests that I believe the
preliminary charges were reckless driving resisting law enforcement. Any further
info you can provide or just the status on cam

(47:15):
Jones here, Yeah.

Speaker 9 (47:18):
Talked to him yesterday. He came in and uh, he
was very very contrite, you know about about the.

Speaker 10 (47:26):
Situation of being pulled over.

Speaker 9 (47:29):
You know, this is a kid with exemplary character, going
back to his entire career at Marquette. After hearing the
details of this, I think, I think in the in
the end, this is going to end up being a
speeding ticket. You know, a lot a lot of times
things that are on the on the police blodder are overblown.

(47:53):
You know, this is a kid that was was driving
driving a little faster than he should have been trying
to get to his uh his his workout and rehab thing.
He's running a few minutes behind, and so you know
he got pulled over.

Speaker 10 (48:07):
And and uh, you know, the thing ended up. The
thing ended up in the in you know, in the news.

Speaker 9 (48:13):
So uh, I think in the end it's going to
be a speeding ticket probably, And you know, he's going
through a thing right now where he's got a back
situation that is only gonna heal with time, time in
the hyperbar chamber. Can't do can't do too much moving around.

(48:36):
You know, it's a very it's got to be a
very difficult thing to go through, particularly given our point guard.

Speaker 10 (48:42):
Situation for him.

Speaker 9 (48:43):
And yes, he would have been one of the guys
in the conversation, so you know, I said a couple
a few days ago that you know, we would revisit,
you know, conversation about where he's.

Speaker 10 (48:54):
At, probably at November ninth, when we were gonna do
the same thing with t J McConnell.

Speaker 9 (48:59):
That will be a one month after TJ's injury, and
then we'll see what's on from there. But uh, you know,
cams Cam's doing fine, and uh, you know, and this
is this is gonna be a blip on the radar screen.

Speaker 1 (49:13):
Can we have Rick Carlisle head coach, Ian A Pacer
is joining us on the Paalsica top line right now, Rick,
thinking of your other rookie guard, Taylor Peter, what's impressed
you the most about his ability to adapt to the
NBA game, particularly perhaps on the defensive end, is what
I've been looking at myself.

Speaker 10 (49:32):
Yeah, he's just you know, this is a this is
a kid.

Speaker 9 (49:36):
There's another Kevin Pritchard home run, you know in the
second round. I mean, tough, tough, minded, a little bigger
than people think, strong, physical, NBA skill with his shooting,
you know, right now we've.

Speaker 10 (49:56):
Got the guy.

Speaker 9 (49:58):
Taking reps at point guard, which he's never played in
his life, you know, up until the last preseason game.
But that's the that's kind of the bind wearing right
now with tj out, with with Quintin Jackson out and
with Cam Jones out, So you know, there's a lot
of adjusting that's going on from a team standpoint. But

(50:20):
but this kid is resourceful, opportunistic as one of the
best shooters in the country last year, maybe it may
have even been the leading three point shooting in the
country when he's at Liberty last year. So taking advantage
of opportunity here. High character. Our fans love him already,
the ones that have seen him in preseason games. Hard

(50:43):
playing dude, that's all about the team.

Speaker 2 (50:46):
Yeah, certainly been impressed by him here in the preseason slate.
It'll start for real coming up Thursday night, Pacers and
Thunder inside of gamebridge Field. That's right, Carlisle with us
here Tuesday at eight o'clock.

Speaker 1 (50:57):
Coach.

Speaker 2 (50:58):
I was reading they do this annually on NBA dot com,
like a GM survey, and one of the things I
was struck by by the NBA gms that responded to
this was they asked, you know who runs or which
head coach runs the best offense in the league. You
were the overwhelming winner of that. I want to say
it was north of fifty percent, and second was like

(51:20):
all the way down at ten percent on that list,
just in general with your offensive philosophy. I guess where
did it start? And how do you think maybe that
side of the ball has evolved for you over the years.

Speaker 9 (51:36):
Well, I probably started when when my NBA playing career
began in Boston.

Speaker 10 (51:42):
You know, we we were a team that had.

Speaker 9 (51:45):
A lot of great players. You know, I think four
or five Paul of famers.

Speaker 10 (51:50):
When I first got there, and then we traded for
Bill Walton.

Speaker 9 (51:52):
I think he became the fifth or sixth and so,
you know, he had a simple plan offensively, it was
to play were the best players.

Speaker 10 (52:01):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (52:02):
We had plays, but we didn't call a lot of plays.
And that's kind of how the game functions. And I
told the story. I don't know if I told on
this show or not, but you know, when I went
from Boston.

Speaker 10 (52:16):
To the New York Knicks.

Speaker 9 (52:20):
You know, Rick Bettina was the coach of the Knicks
and and Stu Jackson was one of his assistants. And
you know, these guys were meticulous game planners. You know,
they were the best of the best in terms of detail.
And Stu came to be with you know, three or
four paid diagram sheet pages of actions.

Speaker 10 (52:42):
He said, what are these calls?

Speaker 9 (52:45):
And he had all these different things that were happening,
and I said, uh, I said, Stu, they're just just playing.
I mean, he goes, these aren't plays. I said, no,
They're just they just they just played the game. This
is really a flowing kind of freelance team He's like, not, no,
that can't be right, you know. And so anyway that

(53:06):
was and you know, we were finals three three out
of three years, won the championship in eighty six.

Speaker 10 (53:13):
And yeah, I just became a strong believer.

Speaker 9 (53:17):
In that and that kind of player empowerment, et cetera.
And then you know, as I moved on and coaching,
you know, with as an assistant and a head coach,
you know, I just was a was a believer in
this kind of approach. And you know I've said this also,

(53:40):
you know, my my background with music, you know, I
you know, I learned how to play the piano and
and and I'm really I'm really drawn to improvisational jazz
because you listen to the same song, and every every
time you listen to it sounds a little different. And

(54:01):
when you get immersed in us in music a certain way,
that's how you see it. And and that's music has
probably influenced my view of the of the of basketball
as well. You know, defenses are so sophisticated trying to
figure out how to guard situations, et cetera. You know,
I just always feel like the more we can make

(54:22):
the the game offensively look different every time down, the more.

Speaker 10 (54:26):
Difficult it's going to be for the defense.

Speaker 9 (54:28):
And so you know, all that stuff has has has
influenced me. You know, my my team's in Dallas were
we're we're very good flow teams. And look, we had
great players, you know, we had we had Newitsky, we
had Kid, we had Jason Terry and and others.

Speaker 10 (54:46):
And here, you know, it's been it's.

Speaker 9 (54:48):
Been Tyreesee, you know, Pascal and and TJ. McConnell has
been a big part of it. And of course Miles
Turner was a part of it. He's moved on and
so now now we've got to change the recipe to
to the to the person.

Speaker 10 (55:02):
That we have available.

Speaker 9 (55:03):
So this is gonna look different, and it'll be a
work in progress, you know, on certain on certain levels.
But I want our system to be a really fun
system to play in and for players to feel like
they have real influence on what happens out there.

Speaker 10 (55:22):
And so that's where we're.

Speaker 1 (55:24):
At rick to that point about your offense, we know
a lot of it will go through Andrew Nimhard in
your core four, But how do you view the center
position right now? And I guess what are you hoping
to get out of the censor of bi committee approach.

Speaker 9 (55:41):
Yeah, I'm not even sure who's going to start right
this second. The Isaiah Jackson started all four games, so
certainly there's a possibility that.

Speaker 10 (55:50):
He could be the starter.

Speaker 9 (55:53):
We've got to figure out, you know, who who fits where,
and there will be there will be challenges with this.
You know, I've I've mentioned this before. I'm sure if
it's been in this show, but you know, I've had
a center by committee situation one year in Dallas when
we had a successful year and you know, it took

(56:15):
San Antonio to seven games in the first round of
the year. They won at fourteen with guys that were,
you know, not household names, but they were guys that
were very good at what they did. So, you know,
Sam Dallenbart was a great shot blocker and defender. Dwan
Blair was a guy that had great feel, and he
had a big body and he banged with some of

(56:36):
the bigger centers and he was a great rebounder. And
then Brandon Wright was one of the best rim threats
that I've ever seen in the NBA and certainly ever coached.
So it was it was rare in a game that
year and we're in a playoff game that all three
of them didn't play some minutes, So I don't know

(56:58):
if it's gonna look like that. You know, We've got Isaiah,
We've got Jay Huff who we traded for who's who's
a stretch big.

Speaker 10 (57:06):
We've got Tony Bradley, who.

Speaker 9 (57:10):
You know was a very important player for us last
year in the playoffs, you know, matching up with guys
like Mitchell Robinson and and Jared Allen young as because
he's a great rebounder and has great feel and and
James Wiseman is in the mix too, and and Wiseman
has done some very good things in preseasons. So and
then and then we have Obi Toppen, who played you know,

(57:31):
a pretty significant number of minutes at five during the
regular season as well as the playoffs last year. So
you know, there's a lot of there's a lot of
options there and uh, and so we'll have to see
how it all shakes out. But there's great opportunity and uh,
the guys who are working hard, so we'll see what's what.

Speaker 1 (57:53):
Again, we have Rick carl Out, Indiana Pacers head coach,
joining us on the Pilosicar's hot line right now, and Rick,
A lot of us have tuned into the Starting five
Netflix documentary on Tyre's Halliburton and the field the players
in the NBA. I know you mentioned throughout the playoffs
how much you loved or did not love the cameras
being around you at all moments of the day. But
as someone who experienced it firsthand, do you tune into

(58:16):
those types of series? Are you someone who's just like,
you know what, I have my fix living it out
in real life?

Speaker 9 (58:23):
Yeah, right now, I've got other things I'm focusing on.
But I've heard it's very good, and I've heard that
it's it's it's very compelling. I mean, certainly, certainly have
certainly had a lot of footage to to choose from,
and I know, I know a lot of the vast

(58:44):
majority of it was not even around our facility or
our team in our you know, in the hotel and
stuff like that. A lot of them it was off site,
you know, at h at Tyres's home, you know, or
with his mom and dad, et cetera. So you know,
from a human interest standpoint, I'm sure it's uh, I'm

(59:04):
sure it's excellent. And you know now nowadays, the access
for that kind of stuff is uh, you know, it's
it's it's.

Speaker 10 (59:14):
Like it's it's it's like never before.

Speaker 9 (59:16):
And and players are very comfortable with cameras following them
around and with microphones on and stuff like that, and
it's really it's it's all become a part of this business.
And coaching is really not much different, you know, over
the years, you know, as I've been president of the

(59:36):
Coaches Association the last twenty years and really in seven
this is when a lot of the real true access stuff.

Speaker 10 (59:45):
Came into the foe.

Speaker 9 (59:46):
You know, I've been I've been telling our coaches for
for many years that you know, coaching the games and
coaching developing players and all that is going to be
is always going to be, you know, the major part
of it, uh, you know, being on camera. And you know,
in some ways being a content creator. I hate that

(01:00:08):
word because it's one of the it's one of the
things that drives people, you know, nuts in our profession,
you know, the people that come out with hot takes
and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 10 (01:00:19):
But but in a way, it's really true.

Speaker 9 (01:00:21):
You know, you're gonna have robotic cameras in the locker room,
maybe be a lot of different.

Speaker 10 (01:00:26):
Different approaches this year. You know, I think there's gonna
be a.

Speaker 9 (01:00:30):
A Peacock game every Monday Night where there's gonna be
two guys, one guys sitting next right almost on the
bench of one team, and another guy's gonna be on
the bench of another's Austin Rivers and Robbie Humble, and
these guys are gonna be trying to really get into
the intimacies of the game.

Speaker 8 (01:00:47):
And so.

Speaker 9 (01:00:50):
Things are very ambitious in the world of access, which
which I completely understand. And uh, you know, this year
with with all the new broadcast parts, I mean there's
like four or five different carriers of NBA basketball, and
on the one hand.

Speaker 10 (01:01:08):
It's seems like it might be a bit confusing.

Speaker 9 (01:01:10):
On the other hand, I'm sure the network is going
to make sure it's it's something that can be sorted
out very easily.

Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
I get coach, there's probably a little bit of that, Hey,
we gotta, you know, move on from last year. But
will you guys do anything pre game?

Speaker 1 (01:01:23):
I don't to.

Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Honor I don't know full building in there to honor
last year's team. I don't know if it's raising a
banner for the Eastern Conference Championship or anything like that.

Speaker 5 (01:01:31):
Thursday night.

Speaker 10 (01:01:35):
My understanding is that there will be.

Speaker 9 (01:01:38):
An acknowledgement of the Eastern Conference Championship banner.

Speaker 8 (01:01:43):
I don't know.

Speaker 10 (01:01:44):
I don't know that it's going to be a long
drawn out thing.

Speaker 9 (01:01:48):
I do think it's appropriate. You know, we had our
annual meeting with all of our doctors last night. We
have a very really you know, rare situation. We have
specialists from virtually every aspect of medicine that are available

(01:02:09):
to our players.

Speaker 10 (01:02:12):
Coaches too, luckily, you know, really on a moment's notice,
and so every year we honor them. We bring them
together with a dinner.

Speaker 9 (01:02:20):
And one of the things that we did last night
was all the doctors that they wanted to got a
picture with me and Kevin Richard and in the Eastern
Conference Championship trophy, which was kind of cool. It's a
really nice trophy. It's actually very a bit nicer than
the one they gave us in twenty eleven.

Speaker 10 (01:02:38):
So that was cool.

Speaker 9 (01:02:40):
But yeah, I know, it's hey, last year was last
year was really great and there was so much about
it that was moving and inspirational, etc. It got our
fans really going. But you know, once once that acknowledgement happens, uh,

(01:03:02):
you know, we're into the realities of this year and
some of the challenges that we have right off the
bat and we're playing the World champions you know, with
with Okahoma coming in the year.

Speaker 8 (01:03:10):
So.

Speaker 10 (01:03:12):
It be a lot going on, but a lot of
challenges that we're looking forward to.

Speaker 1 (01:03:17):
Last one, I'll let you go out of here.

Speaker 4 (01:03:18):
Rick.

Speaker 1 (01:03:19):
We saw you get dressed up for your daughter sorority
sorority formal, had the boat tie on you used to
see ye in then you know, pull over something like
that Pacers version. So how awesome was that to just
get that slice of life, real life before you get
back to the grind.

Speaker 10 (01:03:36):
Yeah, it was. It was an amazing night.

Speaker 9 (01:03:39):
And uh it's the Kapa Kappa Gamma Sorority parents formal,
and it was. It was wonderful, great, a great night
in Charlottesville. The weather, the weather there over the last
seven weeks, it's been like mid seventies and sunny and
just a late breeze.

Speaker 10 (01:03:56):
It's just been unreal.

Speaker 9 (01:03:59):
It's it's one of the most bucolic places you're ever
gonna find in life. And uh and getting to spend
that that evening with her was really special. So very
grateful to the organization.

Speaker 10 (01:04:12):
For saying, yeah, that's okay to do that. And uh chee.

Speaker 2 (01:04:18):
Asking you more of a petting zoo party guy at
u v A or you more of a get dressed
up for the formal guy.

Speaker 10 (01:04:27):
Well, I don't know.

Speaker 9 (01:04:27):
I wouldn't even know begin to know how to answer
that question. I think for the for the for the uh,
I think i'd have to say probably as little as
I like to get dressed up, probably a little more
of a formal of a parent's formal person than.

Speaker 8 (01:04:46):
Uh, you know.

Speaker 9 (01:04:49):
What do they call it the petting zoo or whatever
it was? You know, I ended up one at one
of those parties last year, But you know that's that's
unlikely to have the future.

Speaker 2 (01:05:01):
Well, he looks sharp and certainly looked like an awesome
moment for you guys. Over the weekend again, Pacers Thunder
starting Thursday night inside a Gamebridge Field House, and we
are very very appreciative of Tuesdays eight o'clock with the
head coach of the Pacers, Rick Carlisle, coach, Thank you,
good luck and we'll talk to you next week. All right, guys,
take care Rick Carlisle Payless Liquors hot line a ton

(01:05:21):
to recap from that, but Mark Dyton, let's go ahead
and check it out the.

Speaker 4 (01:05:26):
Morning Checkdown on ninety sweet five and one oh seven
five the fan.

Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
As Kevin tell him, I'm going to go.

Speaker 7 (01:05:33):
Game number one for the twenty five to twenty six
season comes your way Thursday night over at the field
House against Oklahoma City. And of course the big news,
James Aaron Nesmith signs a two year, forty million dollar extension.
He'll be around for a couple of more years, right
along with Tyrese Haliburton rat.

Speaker 1 (01:05:49):
Yes, I believe he is under contract to the twenty
twenty eight to twenty nine season, which will put him
at about thirty years old, so right in the middle
of his prime still, and I think it's well deserved
bonus raise for a player who, like Rick Carlo laid Out,
has really come into his own here with the Pacers.

Speaker 7 (01:06:05):
And one contract that didn't get extended yesterday by the
NBA deadline before the season started was that of Aaron Nice,
not Aaron Eistmith, but Benedict Matherin. Are you a little
surprised that that one didn't get done.

Speaker 2 (01:06:17):
I'm not, you know, I think we've talked about all
off season long. I think for both parties it made
some sense to probably let this season play out. It's
a hell of an opportunity for Matherin. It's a pretty
unique one just based off how you've utilized him in
years past. So it's going to be a storyline all
year long. The Pacers need him to carry a big
time scoring burden, and as Ray Carlos said, does many
times need him to do some other stuff to Really

(01:06:39):
I think they kind of satisfy what they're looking for.
So I can't wait for Thursday night. We should note
Thunder play tonight. I believe Jalen Williams, who battled that
wrist in the NBA Finals, he's out for tonight to
just something to keep an eye on as the Pacers
walking the Thunder coming up on Thursday.

Speaker 7 (01:06:54):
All right. National Football League had a doubleheader last night
on Monday Night football. First game went to the Detroit Lions.
They were winning your winners at home against the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers twenty four to nine. The final score there
Jamiir Gibbs seventeen carries one hundred and thirty six yards
two touchdowns. That team looked good last night. Meanwhile, the
Seahawks won the nightcap over the Houston Texans twenty seven

(01:07:14):
to nineteen. That always helps when an AFC South team loses.
For the Indianapolis Colts, who are six and one, and
they'll be hosting an AFC South opponent on Sunday for
twenty five late kickoff against the Tennessee Titans. You don't
expect to see a lot of Titans Colts games at
four to twenty five in the afternoon.

Speaker 1 (01:07:31):
James I told you that one pm is God's time
when it comes to football. So the fact that this
game's kicking off at four twenty five is a sin
in my opinion on a Sunday, But looking forward to
be a bag of Lucas Oil Stadium and a chance
to move to seven to one on the year. And
I expect that to be the case, considering just how
much of the Titans have struggling, how much the Colts
have been rolling teams.

Speaker 7 (01:07:50):
All Right, we know who the participants in the twenty
twenty five World Series are going to be. The Dodgers.
After getting a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers are already
waiting for now the Toronto Blue Jay who won Game
seven of the ALCS last night on a three run
home run in the bottom of the seventh from George Springer.
They beat the Mariners by the score of four to three.
They go to the World Series for the third time

(01:08:10):
in franchise history, denying the Mariners their first ever chance
to play in the World Series. Two games tonight to
kick off the i should say tip off the NBA season.
Houston Rockets and Oklahoma Oklahoma City thunder play at seven
thirty Golden State Warriors Los Angeles Lakers at ten. Both
games can be seen on NBC or Peacock tonight for
your viewing pleasure. You were just talking about all the

(01:08:32):
different streaming services that the NBA is offering this year.
Rick was very bullish on that. He was like, you'll
figure it out.

Speaker 2 (01:08:38):
Yeah, the Humble Austin Rivers thing sounds a bit unique.
I'll be curious how that exactly plays out.

Speaker 5 (01:08:43):
So seemingly.

Speaker 2 (01:08:44):
Robbi Hummell, I think has done every Purdue in Indiana
game that I've watched over the last three years.

Speaker 5 (01:08:48):
I can only imagine how busy his schedule now continues.

Speaker 7 (01:08:51):
To be and Michael Jordan will be a special contributor
on NBC all year long. Nobody knows what that means.

Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
A couple other things I'll add on IMS Oval test scene.
It's a ton of guys out there the next two days,
but you will have I think it's a little bit
more equipment related, some changes. I think it'll turn two.
I saw so you hear some cars over there at
sixteenth and Georgetown. And again, the best to Matthew Graves,
head coach of the Indiana State Sycamores. I think the
Graves family is well known around this state when it

(01:09:17):
comes to basketball lore, and by all accounts, Matthew Graves
is a terrific individual. He underwent triple bypass surgery on
Monday morning out there in terre Hot, so going to
take a leave of absence. Best to him and his
family here. Mark Slessinger, Ellsville's own, will be the acting
head coach here for the Sycamores as they get started.

Speaker 7 (01:09:37):
Anything else you want to throw in, JB.

Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
No, I think that is all that I have. I'm
just looking forward to getting back at it when it
comes to colts practice tomorrow and seeing if they can
keep the street going.

Speaker 7 (01:09:48):
All right, we'll talk more about the Colts, the current
injury situation, more on all of the conversation the guys
had with Rick Carlisle. Coming up in just a minute.

Speaker 4 (01:09:55):
Joel A.

Speaker 7 (01:09:56):
Erickson talks Colts in the NFL at nine o'clock. It's
all right, good dear for Rick Carlisle, a head coach
of the Indiana Pacers with JB and KB. Just a
moment ago and talking about a number of things as
we get ready to move on to the season, as
far as depth and injuries and all those things was
so much up in the air. What was your big takeaway,

(01:10:17):
James from the way he sees rotations at the first
part of the season.

Speaker 1 (01:10:21):
Well, I think it was a couple of things. It
was still being very fluid when it comes to who
is going to help alleviate some of that point guard
pressure on Andrew Nimhar, especially considering the injuries to that
position right now, and then also at center, not really
having a sets answer there. He said, Hey, Isaiah Jackson
started all four games. I believe we're in the preseason,

(01:10:43):
but we're still open to, you know, looking at what
other guys maybe have to offer, and so those are
the two, I guess team related things that I'm most
focused on. And then obviously Kevin. He did give I
think a pretty thorough update on Cam Jones and his
arrest yesterday.

Speaker 7 (01:10:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
I didn't get the vibe at all, James that they
are all of a sudden making a point guard move
in the next hour before they start practice here coming
up at twelve thirty. You know, sometimes you see this,
you know NFL for example, and I get the rosters
are much bigger, but you set the initial roster and
then you tinker with it a little bit and maybe
they will. But it didn't sound like four centers right now,

(01:11:21):
really one. I guess two in Ray j Dennis healthy
point guards and Rag's on a two way deal. It
doesn't sound like a huge amount of urgency to necessarily
go out there and add the next Cameron Pay, the
next to one, right, the next Monte Morris, et cetera,
et cetera. So that's I think a question a lot
of fans had with Thursday night. You get in here,
and yeah, I would say the Cam Jones thing. I

(01:11:43):
don't know, Rick probably, I don't know, downplayed it or
I don't know thought it was a tad overblown. I
think that's I'm paraphrasing. Obviously, we'll play that audio maybe
coming up in the nine o'clock hour, But he doesn't
seem to be too concerned by yesterday's Cam Jones arrest.

Speaker 7 (01:11:58):
Now, I basically said, at the end of the day,
it probably end up being a speeding ticket, right, That's
kind of what he said. So we'll keep an eye
on that and figure out what the the Pacers have
to do with as far as I think, again, just
death more than anything. Starting off the season, I don't mind.
I think there's probably times to see Obi Topping joining
some of those guys.

Speaker 2 (01:12:17):
I think Obi Topping with the starting five is probably
your best five man unit. The question you would have
specifically for Thursday night is we know that opponent very
very well, and Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein are quite Yeah,
the big dude, so how do you count? You know,
there are some opponents where you can get by, I.

Speaker 1 (01:12:34):
Think with the extent I think, but I think that's
like the Mimickey kind of lineup, where like you can
do it for certain spurts and you can turn to
it for a spark like they did Honestly, last year
when tiers albur was healthy one Obi played the five.
They were running and moving and doing all these things.
But we all knew that's not you can't sustain that
over a forty eight minute game with Obi at the five.
He's just not a center, a true center. So yeah,

(01:12:56):
I would agree there, Kevin, But man, I'm like, uh,
you know, there's certain things you can't make up for
when you just don't have the height and the weight
and you know the things that.

Speaker 2 (01:13:06):
Okay, seeing other teams have to offer when it comes
to their big man, well, then taking Obie out of
the second unit is also a huge, long good point.
You start, well, what your second unit makeup would be
without Obie? I mean it's some let's call Ray j
Dennis the backup point guard, just to say it, okay, him, Shepherd, Jars, Walker, Furfey,
you know some center. I don't know what that would

(01:13:26):
look like if Obi then were to bump up. So
definitely some questions. You know, from a starting lineup rotational standpoint,
much different than recent years, when you know, for the
most part you knew what it was going to be. H.

Speaker 7 (01:13:39):
I can't wait for the season just to see how
Rick manages all of this, especially with injuries to that
second unit to start the season off. And it sounds
kind of like all the things that he said today
and what I've been reading sounds Kevin like he he's
kind of curious to see how it all works out, too.
Is he's going to try a bunch of different things
to start with?

Speaker 2 (01:13:58):
Sure, yeah, I mean I think there's a Yeah, there's
an intrigue to that. I'm sure there's a balance between
intrigue and you know, he can make you a little
maddening of Haliburton Street close. I'd much rather have him
not rocking that. And you know, obviously center rotation, Sure
he's done it before in Dallas, but Miles Turner is
pretty quality player as well.

Speaker 8 (01:14:17):
Well.

Speaker 7 (01:14:18):
I just know that this is an entertaining team, and
I don't know, you know, everybody's talking about thirty seven
and a half wins. I still feel like that's an
achievable over for the Pacers. I feel good about that.
But they're going to have their challenges, there's no question
about that, probably against some of the deeper, better teams
as time goes on. But I still think that they're
gonna be a tough out for anybody that comes in here,

(01:14:39):
especially in the second, third, or fourth game of a
road trip, It's going to be tough. They're not going
to get out of here easily.

Speaker 1 (01:14:44):
By the way, Joel A.

Speaker 2 (01:14:45):
Rickson going to join us coming up at nine, James,
I know you and I have talked about this one
thing we've really Joel does a wonderful job covering in
the Colts. One thing in particular, I think he's done
a really nice job of here. Within the start of
the season, he has published two features on the Orsay
daughter so far. I believe the third one on Caitlin
Jackson is coming up, but it looks like he's gone

(01:15:05):
in birth.

Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
Order, if you will.

Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
So he started with Carly who you see of course
on the sidelines, and then Casey Foy was last week,
I believe, maybe the week prior to that. So among
on field Colts items with Joel A. Erickson, I think
we'll chat about that with him when he joins us
here coming up at nine o'clock.

Speaker 5 (01:15:23):
Maybe skip over the baseball mark. Oh what are you
talking about his Brewers made to the NLCS. Why when't we.

Speaker 7 (01:15:28):
Talk about that?

Speaker 8 (01:15:29):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:15:29):
Man, I'll tell you what are they gonna get a banner?
They should? Chris Hagen Fox efty nine. Ah, he goes
brutal to Joel. We were on the road in LA.
I mean they showed something about the Dodgers being in
the World Series at the stay US so far and
Hagen's hey, Joe, look up and yeah, I expected to
see some punches us in Mississippi State football. He did,

(01:15:51):
he did. But you know Hagen, as a true fan
of a losing team, he said, how I'm used to
this type of pain. So I'd say, Hagen, if you're listening,
but Lord knows he deep in rem sleep.

Speaker 5 (01:16:00):
He only shows up there.

Speaker 1 (01:16:01):
Yeah, my boy, not getting up before twelve.

Speaker 7 (01:16:03):
No, all right, we've got that to talk about Pacers
opening night, and of course Indiana is ranked number two
in the nation. Kurt Signetti already pumping up UCLA for
this week. We'll talk about some of those things next
on ninety three five and one oh seven five Fan
Good Tuesday morning. Thanks so much for being with us
here on the Fan Morning Show. In case you missed it,

(01:16:24):
we'll have it up later today. The Rick Carlisle Conversation
with James Wood and Kevin Bowen. What time that usually
gets posted marks already.

Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
Now look at you, you're on fire, gonna say we
should know this about now right fire, But don't look, but.

Speaker 5 (01:16:36):
Don't listen to it just yet. Save it for ten
oh one.

Speaker 7 (01:16:40):
It's good stuff. You want to hear that. And this
is I think we all go into this season like,
what do we expect. No Miles Turner, no Tyrese Haliburton,
everybody banged up in the second unit this You know,
it was ten and fifteen for the first twenty five
games last year because of some injuries. Are we looking
at the same kind of start again? Only anybody know?

(01:17:00):
I mean, obviously we don't know at this point in time,
But I just I don't know what to expect other
than I think this team, based on the experience of
last year, gonna win games that people think that they're
not gonna be able to win.

Speaker 2 (01:17:11):
You know, I mentioned about an hour ago, and I
think Rick Carlisle kind of confirmed that. I think the
schedule is really tough out of the gate. I mean
not just the thunder opening night, but you go on
the road for those first three. I think John Morant
is supposed to be healthy. I know Zach Ed's out
for the Grizzlies for those I care from a local standpoint,
and then you go out Wes pretty early in November.

(01:17:31):
You've got the Miles Turner return game on that Monday there,
so you know you're gonna see I think, quite a
test here early in the season. So yeah, I mean
there definitely could be some growing pains with a lot
of new not necessarily new faces, but guys just in new, different,
expanded roles.

Speaker 7 (01:17:47):
Yeah, and looking forward to Opening Night Thursday, you'll hear
it live right here on ninety three five and one
on seven to five of the Fan as the Pacers
get rolling against the Oklahoma City Thunder and again double
header for NBA tonight. Scillee to how interested you in
Opening Night on on Network TV NBC Tonight, James.

Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
I'm usually pretty high on the opening games as a
basketball guy, my first sport that ever loves growing up.
And I know Steph Curry is in one of those games.
I believe it' supposed to be Steph cran Lebron. Lebron's out,
but I think personally, just knowing my era of basketball
I grew up on, I'm like, I don't want to
miss too many more of the Lebron, Steph Curry kat games,

(01:18:25):
just because they're not going to be here forever. I
feel like this is, you know, the last wave of that.
So excited to see Steph do his thing for I
believe he's going into like his seventeenth year, and I
want to say Katie's in his nineteenth year. Lebron's going
into twenty three. So yeah, I got to cherish these
guys while I still have them.

Speaker 5 (01:18:40):
I think the first time you hear ron Ball rock tonight, Yeah,
and he goes NBA and then NBC, that's gonna hit
like some crack in the eighties.

Speaker 1 (01:18:50):
John, That's an interesting way to describe it.

Speaker 7 (01:18:52):
But I am looking forward to seeing.

Speaker 1 (01:18:55):
I don't know, I've never had the first experience. Remember
three year old Mark, the nice line and a card
to work here.

Speaker 5 (01:19:03):
That's just a core memory of a young sports fan,
Mark Dyten, of hearing round Ball this song. Yes, okay,
just making sure Albert biting prostitutes and getting ready to
call a great basketball game.

Speaker 7 (01:19:15):
How did I know you were going to listening? I
just how did I know that's.

Speaker 10 (01:19:21):
Where you were?

Speaker 5 (01:19:21):
On a Wikipedia page?

Speaker 1 (01:19:22):
I remember that I was about to say, you know,
a couple of days on Wikipedia. Pangs gonna come to
a few people out there, Yes, who wins the Eastern Conference? Well,
I have this question. I'm going to say this, and
I thought I'm going to get booed immediately.

Speaker 7 (01:19:35):
If you say it.

Speaker 5 (01:19:37):
If I think I know where you're going?

Speaker 1 (01:19:39):
The Knicks?

Speaker 7 (01:19:40):
Okay, I feel like there.

Speaker 5 (01:19:43):
Did you think he was going Mark? I thought he
might go Cleveland. I thought he even might go Milwaukee.

Speaker 2 (01:19:48):
Oh, I would think more of our audience would want
you to boo the Knicks than boo Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (01:19:53):
I think it was probably I will go man. I
think it's talked up between the Knicks and perhaps the Calves.
I mean the Knicks the most personnel back, That's what
I'm saying. Yeah, they have a new coach, that is true,
but taking a team to the finals as the coach,
he's been a championship coaches and assistant like he's not
something no name, I guess, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:20:14):
I mean outside of the thunder now, I'm involving the West,
of course, but good luck picking to through whatever out
west and in the East, good luck picking one through eight.

Speaker 5 (01:20:23):
I mean it's.

Speaker 1 (01:20:25):
You know, do we see any team like are the
magic ready odds. I don't believe. I know, but if
you look at this world, it's a core that's been together.
Injury hurts me so much. Carol just coming into his
prime now to talk about.

Speaker 2 (01:20:40):
Them in a similar light to how they've talked about
the Pacers in recent years. I mean, somebody's got to
be up there. I mean, without true about Halliburton, I mean,
no one's betting on the freaking Sixers. So yeah, New
York or Cleveland will probably be the two that I
would come back to because also the overwhelming favorite. But
Garland's got a tow injury. Still, Yeah, he's not going

(01:21:01):
to start the year.

Speaker 7 (01:21:03):
I can tractually cannot pick any New York team to
ever win anything. And I hope the Knicks fall on
their face and crash before it's all said and done.
I can't. I can't see. There's just something about that
team in that building, with that owner. I don't think
they can get out of their own way for one
reason or the other.

Speaker 1 (01:21:21):
Dang, where where does this Nix hate come from?

Speaker 7 (01:21:24):
In general? Just New York in general?

Speaker 1 (01:21:27):
Dang?

Speaker 5 (01:21:27):
I was like, did you grow up?

Speaker 7 (01:21:29):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:21:29):
No, I'm like, you know, from Colorado.

Speaker 7 (01:21:31):
But to me, it's like Las Vegas. I love going
to New York City, but I can't wait to leave either. Dang,
I must say, I like New York the city now,
but yeah, I can't wait to get out of there either.

Speaker 1 (01:21:42):
Well, Nix hate well as you welcome on these airwaves.
I think for a lot of the listeners, Jeff.

Speaker 5 (01:21:46):
Feet touch in New York City gives it a good
farmer's blow right on the sidewalk.

Speaker 1 (01:21:49):
That's why I think of you.

Speaker 7 (01:21:52):
You're on fire today, Mark, Do you see the reverence there?

Speaker 10 (01:21:58):
No, I'm excited.

Speaker 7 (01:21:59):
I am to see as a as a broadcast nerd.
I'm really excited to see what the first five minutes
of that NBC getting the NBA back tonight is going
to look like. I think they probably have something pretty
cool planned.

Speaker 1 (01:22:11):
And then later in the season we get to Charles Barkley,
Kiel O'Neill, Ernie Johnson sort of mix on ESPN. Now,
I'm still confused by all that it starts.

Speaker 5 (01:22:21):
I don't know what the deal is with it.

Speaker 7 (01:22:23):
I'm confused. I just hope that they're there for the playoffs.
They can start sending teams fishing. That's all I want.
I love that I love, just the dynamic between those guys.

Speaker 1 (01:22:33):
DJ and NDS preach it, drink the tears of New
York fan base. For Fuel, I like him all of
a sudden, All of a sudden. But I'm digging that
right there now.

Speaker 8 (01:22:43):
I don't know why.

Speaker 7 (01:22:43):
I've just always always had a dislike for New York teams.

Speaker 1 (01:22:49):
Hey, what power to you?

Speaker 7 (01:22:51):
That's just how that goes. All right, we got a
busy show still to come. Joy Ericson is going to
come by if Mark doesn't completely offend him by the
pre the pre interview discussion there bringing up the Milwaukee Brewers.

Speaker 5 (01:23:05):
I'm not going to bring him up at all. Why
would I mean? He should be proud of his team.
They made it to the NLCS. What's not to be
proud of.

Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
That?

Speaker 2 (01:23:13):
True?

Speaker 1 (01:23:13):
Is that the true Mark Dyton speaking?

Speaker 10 (01:23:17):
Well?

Speaker 5 (01:23:17):
What other Mark Dyton will be speaking?

Speaker 10 (01:23:19):
Right now?

Speaker 1 (01:23:19):
You sound like you Patrol One, the one that I
know a lot more about.

Speaker 7 (01:23:25):
Talking about it's radio. I wish you could see the
look on his face right His smug doesn't even begin.

Speaker 1 (01:23:30):
One trip to California. You think you think I'm falling
for when I come back? Not doing it?

Speaker 7 (01:23:36):
All right, We're gonna be talking to Joel a Ericson
about that and a little bit more on the conversation
that was just had with Rick Carlisle as we are
getting ready for NBA Opening Night tonight, but for the
Pacers it'll be over at the field House on Thursday night.
And once again it just feels like man, after that
seven game series and a preseason game, like just the
thunder won't go away, Kevin, just make him go away?

Speaker 2 (01:23:58):
Here is this a UCLA quarterback? I gonna play against
a you on Saturday?

Speaker 1 (01:24:02):
Nico? I don't know, Well, that is last day. His
last name is always hard for me to say. I
maala iva something. Yeah, he's the one who's transferred from Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (01:24:12):
Right, and he got hurt late in their game. I'm
a little surprised the line is as big as it is.
Twenty four and a half. Yeah, I think that's a
bit of a storyline coming up. Big noon kickoff here
on UH on Sunday.

Speaker 7 (01:24:25):
Yeah, and Kirk second, he's already talking them up. We'll
hear some of his comments on that a little bit
later on the show as well. Text line is open
two three, nine, ten seventy would love to hear your
feedback and your thoughts on everything we've been talking about.
But we'll dive deeper into the Colts and their six
and one start and what lies ahead next on ninety
three five and one on seven five the fan.

Speaker 4 (01:24:51):
You were listening to about fan morning show on ninety
three to five and one oh seven five the fan.

Speaker 7 (01:24:59):
Say that again, I'm not a loud on the radio,
Mark about Smashing Pumpkins.

Speaker 5 (01:25:02):
I love this song. Great song by Smashing Pumpkins. It's
called zero. For those of you who like to know
the names of the songs, It's called zero.

Speaker 8 (01:25:10):
And I believe.

Speaker 5 (01:25:12):
Joli ericson of the Indie Stars is joining.

Speaker 10 (01:25:14):
Us right now.

Speaker 5 (01:25:16):
Geez what this is a good song. He's just one
of my favorites on spots.

Speaker 10 (01:25:20):
Do you want.

Speaker 1 (01:25:23):
Your team lose to jol Erickson's team something.

Speaker 5 (01:25:26):
That's all ancient history at this point. Oh my god,
this is.

Speaker 2 (01:25:30):
Pathetic by Mark. This is worse than he was trying
to complain about the officials and the Bears gave up fifty.

Speaker 5 (01:25:36):
Good song.

Speaker 1 (01:25:37):
I just know that your team is where Mark's team
went to die this year.

Speaker 7 (01:25:41):
That's all.

Speaker 8 (01:25:43):
Yeah, it's it's I don't know where Mark's going with
this one. It's it's pretty tough. Did they played my
team in the playoffs and lost?

Speaker 7 (01:25:52):
So I agree?

Speaker 8 (01:25:54):
James James James as the as the resident expert on
trash talk. What what's what's Mark? Guy? Chances they're not here.

Speaker 5 (01:26:00):
So he hung the l flag and then they won
zero games from then out.

Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
Exactly. That's where you're going to say, Hey, we won
the same amount of games in the next series.

Speaker 8 (01:26:09):
Yeah. So so, Mark, who has played like every Cub
song possible when I come on the radio, was upset
that the Brewers trolled the Cubs after beating them.

Speaker 5 (01:26:20):
This is a new love Brother syndrome. That's all it is.

Speaker 2 (01:26:24):
We're here scratching his back. Man, this is pathetic. This
I couldn't believe. I can't believe he's stooped to this level.
Kevin suggested this song.

Speaker 1 (01:26:31):
Hell no, good morning, Joe.

Speaker 7 (01:26:34):
How are you doing today?

Speaker 8 (01:26:36):
I'm good, I'm good.

Speaker 10 (01:26:37):
Are you guys do it?

Speaker 7 (01:26:38):
We're great? Thanks for joining us. Is always on the
Payless Liquors hotline six and one in leading so many
offensive categories and number one ranked in the AFC Like
it does not appear like this train is gonna slow down.
What do you think so far of this this Colts team.

Speaker 8 (01:26:55):
Yeah, I mean I think I think we're kind of
at the point now where we should expect this Colts
offense to be great until they honestly, honestly, it's not
even just one performance anymore. It's got to be a
bunch of performances go wrong in a row before we
readjust because you know that Chargers team coming in, there's

(01:27:16):
they're passing stats for like this is the top five
pass defense. The Colts went out and Daniel Jones threw
for two hundred and eighty eight yards and they had
four hundred yards, and you know they it's there's there's
nothing to I know, there's still people saying some stuff
about the schedule, but the Broncos are like a top
up until up until a sudden, they were like a

(01:27:36):
top two defense. They're just really good on offense. They're
really balanced, They've got a good offensive line. They don't
have to run jat all the time, so when they do,
it's more it's even more effective. And they got a
whole bunch of different weapons. It's really hard to find
a weakness in the way the Colts have played offense.

Speaker 2 (01:27:53):
So far, joellet's foreign for Chris Bauer to sit here
at this part of the season and be in the
position that they are. I tend to think he will
be looking at making a move now. Where exactly that happens, though,
I think is a pretty good debate, So I'll throw
it your way. You think cornerback or the You think
defensive end is more pressing right now, I.

Speaker 8 (01:28:13):
Think it's cornerback. I just think, you know, they they're
not getting as much edge rush as I think most
people would would like to see. It's still it's still
a DeForest Buckner heavy pass rush from the inside, but
they have players. You know, if if there were more
serious injuries to Ebicom and Taekwon Lewis, it doesn't sound

(01:28:34):
like those injuries are are long term. You know, I
think maybe you could make the edge edge rusher argument
a little bit better. The argument against corner to me,
is really just that there don't seem to be a
bunch of good ones out there on the market, but
the situation they're in just in terms of depth and

(01:28:56):
injury and not knowing when people are going to be back.
If it was me, I go get a corner and
I think the other thing is Chris Ballor himself has
signaled to us all offseason that this defense needs cornerbacks.
You know that they clearly don't have answers too, because
you know they played Cameron Mitchell and Jonathanwards about the
same amount on Sunday. They need to find somebody who

(01:29:18):
they can feel like they can play them with these
guys on the injured reserve.

Speaker 2 (01:29:24):
Could you make the argument Javeri's Ward will be back
at some point and there's no Javaria's Ward at defensive end.

Speaker 8 (01:29:30):
Uh. I think you could. I think you could. And
you could also make the argument that you know, at
the trade deadline, you take what's available, and so if
if there's pass rushers available, you could you can do that.
I think you could make that argument. I just think
that we've seen games already. The Rams game is one
of them where they're getting pressure off the edge and

(01:29:52):
it doesn't matter because the corners can't hold up long
enough to uh to keep the quarter make the quarterback
hold the ball. So I just think they gotta have
they gotta have help at that cornerback position.

Speaker 1 (01:30:03):
And again we have Joel a Ericson joining us from
Indie Starr on the Paylow Stickers hot Line and Joel,
I must admit you might have the biggest man crush
on to Forest Buckner. There is no greater appreciator. I
think you're said, Rego Sa, what I mean, there's a no.
First of all, Joe is a crush on anything that
looks weird in football, that looks old schooling football, and

(01:30:26):
that like hurts my brain happy fourth down exactly. Like
he's the guy who keeps up with all the weird intricacies.
You know, you were on the Zoom call a couple
weeks ago Kevin where we had special teams coordinator Brian
Mason joined and he gives a Joel's shout out because
he noticed some weird thing in practice. And I'm like,
of course Joel noticed this. So getting back to the point,
what how would you describe the formans that the Forest

(01:30:47):
Buckner put on Sunday and the level he's playing at
this season.

Speaker 8 (01:30:52):
It's he's The hard thing with Buckner is that with
pass rushers, everyone always looks at sacks, and I think
that's kind of what happened. What's happened the buttoner is
just that from a national perspective, he doesn't get the
same credit that like a Chris Jones gets or some
of these other guys. He's just because honestly, the Colts.

Speaker 1 (01:31:10):
Haven't been good.

Speaker 8 (01:31:11):
But I kind of do this thing during games most
of the time where I try to watch the line
first and then and then and then move on to
where the ball's going. And Buttoner has just faced so
many double teams this year. If he if you, he
said after the game on Sunday, he said something about,
like I was able to win my one on ones
when I got him. I went back and watched his sacks.

(01:31:33):
He didn't really get right on right, but he got
double teams where he beat one guy first and then
the next guy second, so he kind of turned the
double team into two one on ones.

Speaker 10 (01:31:44):
He's a guy, that's he.

Speaker 8 (01:31:47):
I just don't think he's probably appreciated enough nationally for
how good he is. He's right up there with those
other defensive tackles, and it's just it's just a matter
of team success. A game like the other day, it's
not a great Charger offensive line, but he's got to
fight through a double team on like literally almost every snap.

Speaker 1 (01:32:05):
If there is someone who is if there is ever
a moment in the history of football where DeForest Buckner
is without fans. It is because joy Eric something has
happened to him. I gotta go find it. I was
checking my buddy because that man gave him his flowers,
and deservedly so. The tape is unbelievable from what we
saw from the Forest Buckner Rego or buck.

Speaker 8 (01:32:26):
Oh man, Do I have to choose.

Speaker 10 (01:32:31):
The question?

Speaker 1 (01:32:33):
The father of three boys here is pausing.

Speaker 8 (01:32:36):
I don't. I don't want to. I don't want to choose.
I might, I might. I might have to go Rego
just to just to stay consistent.

Speaker 2 (01:32:43):
Yeah, but Buckner's got enough people that's fair on his boat,
and there there's the there's there's not enough.

Speaker 8 (01:32:49):
I might have to go with the Witch. He's the
way the way the ball bounces on those plots like
people are really aren't appreciating it now because he's not
playing at all, which is great for Colts, But you know,
you got to appreciate Rigo Sanchez when he's out there.

Speaker 2 (01:33:04):
Yeah, it's bad for your fandom and you're carrying the
flag for it. Joeli Erickson from The Star with the
Serre Palistickers hotline. Joey teas a little bit earlier. Really
enjoyed reading so far too, and feel free to tease
uh when the Kaylin Jackson feature will be published. But
you've written on both the older Ursay daughters so far,
Carly and Casey. I think excellent reads, just great backgrounds,

(01:33:26):
particularly Casey, who was probably the least in the spotlight
from an organizational standpoint. Yes, she is married to a foight.

Speaker 1 (01:33:34):
Really really well done.

Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
Kind of how did that idea start and just any
grand takeaways you've had in chatting with him.

Speaker 8 (01:33:41):
Well, I think I think it's something that we've kind
of wanted to do for a while. And the idea
was really not necessarily to write something that's uh, you know,
where we slam in on all of the issues pertaining
to the team and do all all and you know,
do the super newsy stuff. Deea was to sort of
introduce these three people to the city of Indianapolis and

(01:34:04):
in whatever way we could. Because we we knew a
ton about Jim Mersey and and his likes and dislikes
and how, you know, how like how he thought and everything.
We didn't know as much about the people taking over
for him, and so that's that's kind of where the
genesis of the story went. I think one of the
things that maybe is the biggest takeaway is that I

(01:34:25):
think when when they took over, there was sort of
this feeling or the way they were, the way it
was talked about, was like, you know, they're stepping into
this new role that they haven't this new role. It's
and it is new in terms of them being the
the three of them, with with Karl obviously being the
principal owner, being the primary owners. But the thing I

(01:34:47):
think sticks out to me is that it's really not
new for them. They've been doing this stuff for a really,
really long time, and the thing that changed is just
that they're officially in charge.

Speaker 7 (01:35:00):
Talking to Joel A.

Speaker 1 (01:35:00):
Erickson and the klin one ye is it coming out?

Speaker 8 (01:35:03):
It should be. I was working on that last night,
and it will come down to when the right time
to publish it is from the Indie Star offices. So
that one, that one is coming soon. I don't know
exactly when, but it's coming soon.

Speaker 1 (01:35:16):
I'll tell him to keep a move on it. I
trolled Joel with this after every game because we were
in LA last week and obviously all the other stories
that he does and I tell him is Hammel subscriber,
so I need those stories on time, and he certainly,
you know, feeds the beast. So I'm shouting the star
and he's gonna be telling Mark to kiss his ass
after telling you to kiss his ass. Well, I mean,
he knows. I feel like Joel just kind of like

(01:35:38):
the little brother. He just looks at me, he goes, yeah,
I'm gonna just tune this guy out for the moment
and get back to work, which usually is and I'd
imagine that's why he's so successful what he does.

Speaker 8 (01:35:48):
Yeah, well, I mean part of it. Part of it
is just the way the way it works with us
being the local paper. Like I there's there's more that
needs to be written for me. And now you know,
now I I we have Nathan Band on the beat too,
so I've got some help. But for the first seven
weeks of the season, it wasn't so like what James
is kind of referring to is like on Sunday we

(01:36:10):
got to the press block and I was like, so,
there's eight things I could write, and like, I think
somebody else would have to make the decision. I think
I wrote five of them or six of them. Depending
on when you want to do that, and James James
is always like, hey, you got to have that up
before you get to the radio show, just in case
there's something I didn't know about there.

Speaker 1 (01:36:31):
You come serious.

Speaker 2 (01:36:32):
By the way, shout out to Nathan Brown. I know
that was announced yesterday on social but you know I
were in the For those unfamiliar if you remember Nate Atkins,
Joel's sidekick covering the Colts here for the last couple
of years, he's now with the Rams. He's now a
colleague of James Boyd over at the Athletic covering the Rams.
Nathan Brown will slide over from the IndyCar Beat, which

(01:36:52):
I think the Indiecar beat would be one of the
harder ones out there to cover. And I thought Nathan
did such a great job at the start. I worked
on the back of the IDs way back in the
day and was always very admiring frankly of his work
ethic uh so looking forward to having him joined the base.
It's a loss for Indy Car, but good news for
Joeli Ericson in his workload.

Speaker 8 (01:37:13):
I I think I think the coolest thing to see
was yesterday after Nathan, you know, put his his I'm
headed to the cold speat message there on on the
social media accounts. So seeing how many people are like
the in the Indie Star is where I go for
IndyCar coverage and I live in Japan or you know,
somewhere on the West Coast or something like that, that

(01:37:33):
that that stuff is really neat. It's an unique position
that he's had, and now now he gets come to
learn in the NFL, which we've we've done this before
where Jimi Elo was, uh, you know, he was covering
Indy Car and then shifted over. So yeah, it's it's
it's exciting to have somebody else on the beat and
he gets to come along in a really nice time.
You know, he's not coming in where they're you know,

(01:37:55):
two and five or three and four and everyone's upset.
He's coming in the opposite way.

Speaker 7 (01:38:00):
Jill, I'm just curious. Fourteen and a half point spread
for the Colts and the Titans this coming weekend. We
know the NFL is in any given Sunday, but it
doesn't look good for the Titans right now. Is that
line more an indication of how good the Colts are
thought to be or how bad the Titans are a
little bit of both.

Speaker 10 (01:38:19):
Man.

Speaker 8 (01:38:20):
I'm I'm not the biggest betting expert for you. I
don't feel like you see lines like fourteen and a
half in the NFL very often. That feels more like
a like a good SEC team versus a bad big
twelve team type of line or something. I don't know's
I think it's probably both. I think the answer is
probably both. People are realizing that the Colts just put

(01:38:42):
up points. They just score points every week, regardless of
the matchup. And I think the other thing is just
this Titan team doesn't have a head coach. They feel
pretty rudderless at the moment, and that's how you get
one of the bigger lines you're gonna see in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (01:38:56):
Joel the Colts. This would be the twelfth time, assuming
this whole, since two thousand, they've been a two touchdown favorite.
They are ten and one in such games. Can you
recall the one?

Speaker 8 (01:39:10):
I cannot. I'm bad with betting lines. I'm terrible.

Speaker 1 (01:39:14):
M's have to be the jack with Jacksonville. You joined
the beat win.

Speaker 8 (01:39:18):
Twenty eighteen?

Speaker 5 (01:39:19):
It is it?

Speaker 8 (01:39:21):
It's twenty eighteen, so is it the.

Speaker 10 (01:39:26):
Is it?

Speaker 8 (01:39:26):
The season op in twenty twenty.

Speaker 2 (01:39:29):
A Colts player who made a special teams tackle on
Sunday scored the first touchdown in this game for the opponents.

Speaker 8 (01:39:37):
Oh I know, okay, Oh it's nineteen Hinds.

Speaker 1 (01:39:42):
No, no, no, no, James Boyd.

Speaker 8 (01:39:45):
Yeah, I'm missing the game.

Speaker 1 (01:39:47):
Gonna say it's Lakwan Treadwell.

Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
Lakwan Treadwell as Jacksonville Jaguar the season finale in twenty
twenty one, that game is just cursed.

Speaker 5 (01:40:00):
And yes, indeed that was jest.

Speaker 8 (01:40:04):
If Daniel Jones beats Jacksonville in Jacksonville, does that does
that make him like like, does that that make him
the ultimate?

Speaker 10 (01:40:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:40:12):
Oh yeah, I've said this for the Peyton Manning statue
goes to Shapiro's parking lot and Daniel Jones statue goes
out front.

Speaker 10 (01:40:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:40:18):
I think Daniel Jones walked into the locker room after
the game Joel with an extension in hand and says,
you know, I already signed. All I need to do
is add a couple of zeros and then you can sign.
And is this right?

Speaker 2 (01:40:30):
The Colts were down twenty six to three in that
game with five minutes to go.

Speaker 8 (01:40:34):
God, that is right, Yeah, that is right?

Speaker 1 (01:40:37):
And that was they had to win to get in
right I I still think though.

Speaker 8 (01:40:41):
That the most the more most confusing one in the
Jacksonville streak is when the twenty eighteen right after I
got in the beat, when the twenty eighteen Colts were
in the middle of running off Penn wins and eleven
games and.

Speaker 5 (01:40:54):
The one game they lost was to like Cody Tetteh
six nothing.

Speaker 8 (01:40:58):
In Jacksonville and they scored an points. That one is
the one that I still can't like, I can't process that.

Speaker 2 (01:41:04):
One more so than Philip Rivers losing to was it
Urban Meyer. I'm trying to think of the head coach
would have been in twenty twenty. Didn't Jacksonville go one
and fifteen and their only win was over the Colts?

Speaker 8 (01:41:13):
They they did, but like some of that, you just
kind of go like a season opener, Yeah, covid year.
That team didn't really hit its stride until after that
Rivers Cleveland Brown's game, the Andrew Luck one. The other
thing is I think that there's also a personal element
to me. I had this story geared up on the
Colts offense and how they'd found balance, and we had

(01:41:34):
to push it back like a month because my editor
correctly was like, well, we can't run a story about
how good the offense is that they scored no points
in Jacksonville.

Speaker 2 (01:41:44):
Yeah, all I remember was a million red zone drives
and none of them working, and then like going forward
constantly on fourth down. Joel, thank you for the time,
and I will say, respectfully, Mark Dyton kiss Joel's ass.

Speaker 8 (01:41:58):
Wow.

Speaker 5 (01:41:58):
My thing is, why didn't they use the W flag?
Why'd they do the L flag? Because now you haven't
meme for twenty years because your team lost, but they
but the Brewers won. Once you hang the W flag,
we don't fly.

Speaker 8 (01:42:10):
We don't fly a flag. That's only a Chicago thing.

Speaker 5 (01:42:13):
You run brought worst down the outfield, all right.

Speaker 8 (01:42:17):
That's better than a flag.

Speaker 1 (01:42:19):
Yeah, Joel, let me know if you want me to
punch him.

Speaker 7 (01:42:20):
I will.

Speaker 1 (01:42:21):
It sounds like two fourth graders, just your mom.

Speaker 10 (01:42:25):
Thank you.

Speaker 5 (01:42:26):
We're gonna play POGs later.

Speaker 8 (01:42:30):
We'll see you guys.

Speaker 10 (01:42:31):
Thanks.

Speaker 7 (01:42:31):
Joe Man does he put up with a lot from us?

Speaker 1 (01:42:34):
Every I know us stop this every week Mark?

Speaker 7 (01:42:37):
Every week Mark is just hammering him.

Speaker 5 (01:42:39):
I will say, Joel, something for Joel, Right, I'm like yeah, sure,
Hold no, that is not what I.

Speaker 2 (01:42:44):
Said, I think Joel's one of those about this stuff
I'm across in this business. There's not a lot of
stand up individuals in our industry. Joel's one of them.

Speaker 1 (01:42:55):
Oh man, all right, this guy. Rest of our guests,
what are you saying? The most of them are out
there by the way, us going to say what? Yes,
it gives us bets every Thursday, So I'm not sure
if he's always a little as long as he's winning.
Jason Emmer, Scott Dolson tomorrow, Is that right, Jeff?

Speaker 7 (01:43:10):
Yeah, looking forward to that.

Speaker 5 (01:43:12):
So the IU AD will join us.

Speaker 1 (01:43:14):
Who was a busy man last week.

Speaker 7 (01:43:15):
And by all accounts, people are liking what Darian Dereez
is doing. And we all know about Kurt Signette. We'll
hear from him a little bit later on the show too.
But yeah, Scott Dallson tomorrow, looking forward to that and
talking about all things Indiana athletics. They got to be feeling.
I know that they're hopeful and optimistic about the basketball team,
but they got a lot to like. Nobody still knows.
I mean, yeah, big win over Marion, you'd kind of
expect that. So what happens.

Speaker 1 (01:43:37):
Absolutely you lose to Mary and we got problems.

Speaker 7 (01:43:39):
Yeah, all right, let's check everything down and let you
know what you need to know for today, right here,
right now.

Speaker 4 (01:43:45):
The morning checkdown on ninety sweet five and one oh
seven five the ban Now.

Speaker 7 (01:43:50):
I don't know if you guys have heard, but the
Cults are six and one right now on top of
the entire AFC.

Speaker 1 (01:43:55):
They are on a torrid pace for scoring entire NFL.

Speaker 7 (01:43:58):
Right last time a Colt's team in the entire history
of the franchise did these kinds of numbers, Johnny Unidis
was the quarterback and they went on to win an
NFL championship game back in the day.

Speaker 1 (01:44:10):
Kevin Bowen, that's what we're dealing with right now.

Speaker 7 (01:44:12):
So we'll see if they can keep it going against
maybe the worst team in the league coming up on
Sunday after twenty five. You don't think they're the worst.

Speaker 1 (01:44:19):
Team in the league. Shut Jets, Jet, Jets, Jets.

Speaker 7 (01:44:23):
Who do you think? Who would you take? What would
the line be between the Titans and the Jets?

Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
Right I don't know I'd be the toilet bawl, but
I would certainly not think the Jets. So the Jets
are bad in America, They're bad in New York. They're
bad overseas, they're bad anywhere.

Speaker 7 (01:44:35):
For twenty five kicks Sunday afternoon, Lucas Oil Stadium, Kevin Bond,
what are our injury updates as of yesterday when the
last time we spoke to anybody from the culture.

Speaker 1 (01:44:44):
Not a whole lot.

Speaker 2 (01:44:45):
Taekwon lewis listed a day to day with a growing injury.
There are some reports about Samson evicomas seen multiple weeks.
Shane Stiken wouldn't confirm that's so. Again, I think past
rush I would disagree with Joel. I think pass rush
is more pressing than the corner right now, and if
you have to factor in health then I think that

(01:45:05):
kind of adds to it. So definitely something to keep
an eye on and could mean more snaps for j T. Tuymaloaw,
who has not had a very big role here in
his rookie campaign.

Speaker 7 (01:45:14):
How many STAPs has he taken so far this year?

Speaker 2 (01:45:16):
I want to say it was twenty two on Sunday.
I don't know the official number if you had them
all up, but it hasn't been much. And again he's
been a healthy scratch a few times.

Speaker 7 (01:45:23):
All right. Last night doubleheader on Monday Night Football to
wrap up the week of the NFL. Detroit Lions got
a huge game from Jamar Gibbs one hundred and thirty
six yards rushing two touchdowns. He added more than eighty
receiving in that when the Lions beat the Tampa Bay
Buccaneers twenty four to nine.

Speaker 1 (01:45:37):
And the Bucks kept getting the ball late in the
fourth quarter.

Speaker 7 (01:45:40):
I don't know if you watched it in that game
last night, but every time they got the ball, they
just couldn't do anything with it. And they were on
this They were right around midfield for most of the
fourth quarter. They just could not get past the Detroit
Lion was no.

Speaker 2 (01:45:51):
Name Lion DB's. They're really banged up, and they stepped
up and made some huge plays.

Speaker 5 (01:45:56):
Against Baker May had a culture win.

Speaker 1 (01:45:59):
Yeah, Dan Cambell will.

Speaker 2 (01:46:00):
Probably their post game and hopefully to Mike Evans injuries
not season ending. He's been an incredibly durable and consistent
player throughout his career and he injured it sounded like
a collar bone last night.

Speaker 5 (01:46:12):
Broke it.

Speaker 7 (01:46:12):
I believe I have broken collar bone.

Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
So we'll see if he can get back at some
point here this season.

Speaker 7 (01:46:17):
All right, Later last night for Seattle Seahawks at home
beat the Houston Texans twenty seven to nineteen. Texans fault
to two to four in the AFC South but Man
Jackson Smith and jigbut Eight catches one hundred and twenty
three yards in a touchdown. He is clearly one of
the top three or four receivers in the NFL right now.
It's every week posting numbers like that.

Speaker 1 (01:46:36):
James, he is playing very good football. And Sam Darnold
also played very good football.

Speaker 8 (01:46:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:46:41):
Also Major League Baseball last night we now have two
contestants for the twenty twenty five World Series. That Toronto
Blue Jay has got a three run home run from
George Springer in the bottom of the seventh to beat
the Mariners by a score of four to three. That'll
go back to the Series for the first time since
the nineties. The Mariner have never been there. And they
were that close two run lead with two and two

(01:47:05):
thirds innings to go and just couldn't quite close it down.

Speaker 5 (01:47:08):
Mark, what in the world does this?

Speaker 2 (01:47:09):
In the YouTube chat people trying to justify the Cubs
and the playoffs this year.

Speaker 7 (01:47:13):
We're talking about?

Speaker 5 (01:47:14):
Is that Mark on the YouTube One of his minions
in here.

Speaker 2 (01:47:17):
You forgot to remind Joel the Cubs won four games
in the playoffs and the Brewers won three.

Speaker 1 (01:47:21):
Both played two series.

Speaker 5 (01:47:23):
It's actually accurate, accurate.

Speaker 2 (01:47:26):
I mean we're all about facts. Who beat who when
they lined up across.

Speaker 5 (01:47:30):
From each other. Well, yes, the Brewers one, congratulations and the.

Speaker 1 (01:47:36):
Troll on me. I'm not gonna lie. I would always
be like if my team loses to your team and
you losing the next round, I'll come sit next to
me and Cabo USA here George.

Speaker 5 (01:47:46):
Jumping on the Reds bandwagon only needed for them to
get torched in the wild card.

Speaker 2 (01:47:50):
If you would have asked me to wear the shirt again,
maybe it would have been a different story for your team.

Speaker 5 (01:47:54):
I didn't need your pity.

Speaker 7 (01:47:56):
Getting one of the World Series will be Friday night,
eight o'clock in Toronto, Blue Jays hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Still just floating after that game by shoe Otane last week. Also,
we can tell you NBA season opens up tonight pair
of games there. Houston Rockets start things off against the

(01:48:17):
Oklahoma City Thunder. That one begins at seven point thirty
on both NBC and Peacock. That'll be followed up by
Golden State in Los Angeles the Los Angeles Lakers. Scotty
did confirm that it'll be Mike Tarico on the play
by play for the first game and Noah Eagle for
the second game in the NBA doubleheader, So that's what's
going on there. Coming up this weekend. College football number

(01:48:38):
two Indiana of course hosting UCLA. Rutgers plays at Purdue
Notre Dame. I believe has the week off to continue
to get better.

Speaker 2 (01:48:47):
That sounds like Ryan Brown pretty iffy for Purdue. Their
quarterback suffer shoulder injury as they got shut out against Northwestern,
so we'll see about his status. If Purdue is going
to get any Big Ten win this year, you would
think it would be Rutgers. Ki Singleton, a decently highly
ranked recruit, would get start there.

Speaker 7 (01:49:05):
And James we talked about in the first hour. But
for those who missed it, Kaitlyn Clark is still listed
this week. Two weeks. She's been playing basketball, but just
some light two on two maybe three on three. Stepani
White said she's not ready for five on five yet,
and there because they have the time, they're just gonna
take this as slowly as they possibly can.

Speaker 1 (01:49:22):
Yes, I believe you said this to Chloe Peterson and
the Indie Star staff on their podcast. So again you
can listen to that after our show. But I must
say for Kaylyn Clark, honestly, just give me the update
of when she's hoping again five on five, And honestly,
even if you don't get me that, I'll just take
a breather from all of that. I feel like, just
get healthy and we'll check back in with you when

(01:49:44):
you know the next count of year rolls around.

Speaker 5 (01:49:45):
At this point, Lord knows, the WNBA has plenty of
downtime in between seasons.

Speaker 1 (01:49:49):
Yeah, and honestly they probably needed after all the chaos
they're going through right now with CBA arguments, and so
I would imagine that Kaylyn Clark is honestly a bigger
voice than that right now versus where she's at injury.

Speaker 7 (01:50:00):
All right, coming up at a moment, we will listen
to Kurt Signetti pump up the UCLA Bruins, who he
is calling an undefeated team. Find out why next on
ninety three five and one oh seven to five Fan.

Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
Bright nine thirty Here on a Tuesday, Minor Scott Dolson
going to join us tomorrow, looking forward to that conversation.
The iu AD Tuesdays at eight o'clock.

Speaker 1 (01:50:22):
This time of year, it.

Speaker 2 (01:50:24):
Means Rick Carlisle we had him on for the first
time here coming up in this season, the Pacers will
get underway Thursday. And part of yesterday's news cycle certainly involved,
probably right around this time yesterday, the arrest of rookie
Cam Jones. And you know, right now for the Pacers,
Cam Jones deal with an injury and was unlikely to

(01:50:45):
play here to start the season. And I'm trying to
think of the official charges, James, dude, do you remember
it was speeding and was it resisting law enforcement?

Speaker 1 (01:50:54):
Yes, so he got charged with a Class A misdemeanor
and a level six felony.

Speaker 2 (01:51:00):
So that was the initial report yesterday. Rick Carlisle h
shared his thoughts with us earlier today on the arrest
of Cam Jones.

Speaker 9 (01:51:09):
Yeah, talked to him yesterday. He came in and uh,
he was very very contrite, you know about about the
situation of being pulled over. You know, this is a
kid with exemplary character, going back to his entire career
at Marquette. After hearing the details of this, I think

(01:51:32):
I think in the In the end, this is going
to end up being a speeding ticket. You know, a lot,
a lot of times things that are on the on
the police blodder or are overblown. You know, this is
a kid that was was driving, driving a little faster
than he should have been, trying to get to his uh,

(01:51:52):
his his workout and rehab thing.

Speaker 10 (01:51:54):
He's run a few minutes behind, and so you know,
he got pulled over and and uh, you know, the
thing ended up. The thing ended up in the in
you know, in the news.

Speaker 9 (01:52:04):
So uh, I think in the end it's gonna be
a speeding ticket probably, And he's going through a thing
right now where he's got a back situation that is
only gonna heal.

Speaker 10 (01:52:18):
With time.

Speaker 9 (01:52:21):
Time in the hyperbar chamber. Can't do can't do too
much moving around. You know, it's a very it's got
to be a very difficult thing to go through, particularly
given our point guard situation for him. And yes, he
would have been one of the guys in the conversation.
So you know, I said a couple a few days

(01:52:41):
ago that you know, we would revisit, you know, conversation
about where he's at, probably on November ninth, when we
were gonna do the same thing with t J McConnell.
That'll be a one month after TJ's injury and then
we'll see what's on from there. But uh, you know, Cams,
Cam's doing fine, and uh you know, and this is

(01:53:02):
this is gonna be a blip on the radar screen.

Speaker 7 (01:53:06):
That's the head coach of the Indiana Indiana Pacers, Rick Carlisle,
talking about Cam Jones getting arrested yesterday. You mentioned level
six felony in Indiana, James, that's the least serious felony charge.
I'm still a felony.

Speaker 1 (01:53:19):
I was gonna say, yeah, I don't ever want to
hear felony in my name in the same sentence. But yeah,
it sounds like Rick feels a lot more optimistic about
situation versus the version that we got yesterday. So more
to come from that. Believe, his court date, I want
to say, is Thursday to twenty third, so he's got
to probably see a judge at some point to you know,

(01:53:39):
get to the bottom of whatever took place yesterday.

Speaker 7 (01:53:42):
All right, So we'll keep an eye on that and
the Pacers get going on Thursday night against the Oklahoma
City Thunder. That'll be over at the field House. You'll
hear it live on ninety three five and one seven
five the fan as the incredible high and then that
crashing end to the season. I think carries over to
a nice celebration of the team before the game starts
on Thursday night. I think that'll be a rockous atmosphere

(01:54:03):
over there.

Speaker 5 (01:54:03):
Yeah, it's something that Rick ricolluded to.

Speaker 2 (01:54:05):
We asked him that kind of near the end, and
you can catch that full interview up on our podcast
page from earlier today. But yeah, it sounds like there
will be some acknowledgment of the Eastern Conference champion. I'm
totally good with it. I know we get into this
debate you know often, you know, how much do you
celebrate you know, non champion chip seasons. But we had
a listener point out to us. I think it was

(01:54:26):
Noah on the tech side a little bit earlier, like
when you win a trophy for something, I think it
should be celebrated, and I would agree with that. So
you don't really get that opportunity, I think in the
preseason in front of a full house to acknowledge that group.
And so I have no issue whatsoever, And I think
the pacer should have some sort of pregame situation. It's

(01:54:46):
a little awkward that it's the thunder in the building,
but this just happens to be how the schedule laid out.

Speaker 8 (01:54:52):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:54:52):
See, I've always felt when it comes to banners, I
agree with what he had to say to me. You
get championship banners. You put those things right in the
middle of the arena. They're big, they're huge, you can't
miss those things. I believe stuff like conference championships, I
think you should have them, but I think those go
up over kind of on the side as kind of
something that we did. And I've always thought you could
even have a a banner for divisional championships where you

(01:55:16):
just list the year that you won the diditional championship.
So there's a definite order of the kinds of banners, you.

Speaker 2 (01:55:23):
Know, I think Final four is our big accomplishments from
a college basketball standpoint. And you know, obviously you know
you got Purdue listing, you know, Big Ten championships, And
I know a lot of Indiana Purdue fans go back
and forth in the old banner debate and the dustiness
of some banners and the lack of national titles for
other banners. So yeah, I'm totally fine with you know,
to me, that's an accomplishment. Like just because the Pacers

(01:55:46):
felt one game short, Notre Dame falls a game shirt short.
You're a pretty sick fan if the only thing you
care about is wasting that trophy.

Speaker 1 (01:55:55):
I think the Pacers banner should say, Okay, see you
got lucky.

Speaker 7 (01:55:59):
Put it in parent the seas.

Speaker 1 (01:56:00):
Yeah no, but no, not put it in bold put Tyresa,
Like just have you know we have all this technology
just to put a little Montagy.

Speaker 5 (01:56:08):
There doing the old you know, cord to raise the
banner like Brooklyn Nets raise a Eastern Conference participant banner.

Speaker 1 (01:56:17):
We're played. It's gonna be some nasty uh games out
there for sure, But I'm very curious you have the
season unfolds for the Eastern Conference and where the Pastsers
stack up. But yeah, going back to Kevin's question from earlier,
like who's gonna win the East? I think that's what
makes this thing the most is like considering the injuries
to other teams. If Halliburn were healthy, it'll be you know,

(01:56:39):
wide open, honestly, if everyone was was healthy, Pacers, Celtics,
et cetera, et cetera. Maybe right there again, so I
do kind of use as a gap year, and the
Pacers want admit that. But what does this year do
for you going forward when presumably you get Tyree's back
in two years.

Speaker 7 (01:56:56):
You just try to keep it going, keep these guys together,
keep them healthy more than they anything, and then you
try to regroup next year. But yeah, if they can
play spoiler down the stretch, I would love that. If
they're the kind of team. Look, I look at their
late games. They play at Cleveland towards the end of
the season. They don't really play a bunch of great

(01:57:16):
Eastern Conference teams. I know Detroit's on the rise. I
don't know what Philadelphia is going to be about. Those
are their last two games. But maybe maybe you can
screw things up for some people down the stretch. I've
always liked that too. If you can't compete for a title,
mess it up for somebody else.

Speaker 1 (01:57:30):
Yeah, it's the oh you know, if I'm going home,
you coming home with me.

Speaker 7 (01:57:35):
It's like when someone pushes you in the pool, you
got to pull them in with you.

Speaker 10 (01:57:37):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:57:39):
Well, yeah, I guess I don't know. I haven't done
that much of my life.

Speaker 7 (01:57:44):
All right. So it's great to talk to Rick Carlisle
earlier today. That's already posted. You said, Mark Dykton, you
are Johnny on the spot. So again one wait, wait
until ten oh one, and then you can go and
do that and we'll all be good as far as
that is concerned. I want to point that again for
those that start to look at those things. Colts are
fourteen and a half point favorites Kevin over the Tennessee Titans.

(01:58:07):
You just don't see lines like that, and I think
people are acknowledging that, yeah, to Tennessee's not very good,
but that Colts offense is for real right now.

Speaker 2 (01:58:17):
Yeah, it's the second biggest line in the NFL this season,
so anytime, you know, I think Bill Saints.

Speaker 7 (01:58:23):
I believe was the other one.

Speaker 2 (01:58:24):
So you know, obviously, when you have a line that
is north of two touchdowns or two touchdowns, it takes
two to tango. And the Colts are very good and
the Titans are very bad. So hence the line. And again,
interim head coach Mike McCoy, you actually brought Shane Stiken
back to San Diego to be with the Chargers back
in the day, so there is a little bit of
connection on that sideline. The Titans hung in there for

(01:58:47):
what maybe a quarter or two against the Patriots, and
then Mike Crables bunch steamrolled them in the second half.
They did lose Jeffrey Simmons in that game to a
hamstring injury, who's probably their best player. So that also
is another thing in the Colts favor.

Speaker 5 (01:59:00):
I say, you don't see that line usually. You also
really don't see it in divisional games. That's when you because.

Speaker 1 (01:59:05):
Well, good point, good point.

Speaker 5 (01:59:06):
That's that's why it's like, oh that's interesting.

Speaker 2 (01:59:08):
Yeah, Packers Bengals, I think was also kind of a
big line this year, right around two touchdowns. So yeah,
it hasn't happened very often. Like I say to Joel,
it's you know what, twelve time. I think since two
thousand for this franchise. You think about that, all the
Payton years, you think you'd stumble into, you know, quite
a few of those games, but even then you didn't

(01:59:28):
have them. So typically, the cults of handle business quite
quite well in these matchups, and I expect them to
do that on Sunday, all.

Speaker 7 (01:59:36):
Right, coming up at a moment to Indiana, Hoosier is
getting ready to take on UCLA in the Big Ten
this weekend. We'll talk about that and hear from Kurt
Signetti as we continue next ninety three. Things are going
well on football terms around these parts. We've talked about
the six and one Colts, and how about the Hoosiers
or not only seven and oho overall, but four and
oh in conference play right there with Ohio State. Those

(01:59:58):
are the number one and two t means in the country.
Ohio State number one, Indiana number two. Ucla was having
a tough season, they fired their head coach. They're now
three and one in conference play with three straight wins
in the Big Ten, and Kurt Signetti, the head coach
for the Indiana Hoosiers, who we know likes. He's one
of those guys, Kevin. He likes to say nice things

(02:00:19):
about the other team as they get ready to come in.
He didn't. He's not a bulletin board type guy. He
likes to pump him up. But man, he was pumping
up Ucla yesterday in his first comments.

Speaker 11 (02:00:29):
Ucla or playing a three and oh football team that's undefeated.
That's three and oh in the conference. Since they have
retooled their staff and now have their new defensive coordinator
and offensive staff in place. Very impressive football team. Okay,
and offensively, this team is rushing for two hundred and

(02:00:52):
thirty three yards a game right now in their last
three games, which would be against Penn State, Michigan State,
and Maryland.

Speaker 7 (02:01:00):
You like that change is just breaking it down to
when the new coach came in. We don't even talk
about what happened before that.

Speaker 1 (02:01:05):
Yeah, whatever you gotta do to them now, I guess
get your team. Excuse me, I thought to Kevin.

Speaker 7 (02:01:11):
My voice is going, Sorry, Hi, Kevin, go ahead while
he gets here.

Speaker 5 (02:01:13):
Yeah, I mean I certainly.

Speaker 1 (02:01:14):
Get where Sick is going with it.

Speaker 2 (02:01:15):
You know, obviously from an interim standpoint, UCLA has been
a lot better here in recent weeks. Now we'll see
about the health of their quarterback Nico. Probably James is
trying to pronounce that last name and that's how he
got choked up over there, because that's how I feel.
I think my voice is a little bit back, but yeah,
try to pronounce Nico's last name. But he got banged
up late in their win over Maryland. They came back

(02:01:36):
to beat Maryland, and it sounds like his status a
little bit up in the air early in the week
because this line is big.

Speaker 1 (02:01:42):
It's just as big as the Michigan State.

Speaker 2 (02:01:44):
Game, which you know, when you look on paper, UCLA
has been playing much better football leading into this game
than Michigan State, So you know why is that?

Speaker 1 (02:01:53):
Part of it?

Speaker 2 (02:01:53):
Probably is the old you know, West Coast travel for
a nine am local kickoff time for UCLA in Bloomington.

Speaker 1 (02:01:59):
But I I don't know.

Speaker 2 (02:02:00):
Maybe Nico's status has something to do with it. So, uh,
you know, Indiana should once again roll. Is the bye
week next week for Indiana, and I think I have
a buy coming up at some point here. I kind
of forget what it is. Maybe it's a little bit
more Endo November. So yeah, I think it'll be a
breeze for India.

Speaker 1 (02:02:15):
We're gonna go with Nico. I Yamaalavia, I say I
had it and then I.

Speaker 5 (02:02:23):
Believe you have for the first one.

Speaker 7 (02:02:25):
Yama Layava, That's what I want to say.

Speaker 5 (02:02:27):
Sounds beautiful.

Speaker 7 (02:02:27):
His brother, Jo's brother is a freshman quarterback on the
team too.

Speaker 2 (02:02:31):
Oh so it's a battle of brother madback too, then
madg Indiana.

Speaker 5 (02:02:35):
Yama Layava happy not to be Don Fisher this week? Yes,
it's gonna be a hell of a I'd stick with
nko Hi, but.

Speaker 10 (02:02:42):
No, they are.

Speaker 7 (02:02:43):
The one thing they do well is they run the ball,
and they've been running the ball, as he said, you know,
better than two hundred yards a game. They've had it
going on. And uh, do you know who their leading
rusher has been so far this season?

Speaker 1 (02:02:57):
Is it Nico?

Speaker 7 (02:02:57):
It's Nico three hundred and sixty yards rushing.

Speaker 1 (02:02:59):
So so it's not a great thing.

Speaker 2 (02:03:01):
Well, his injury would matter a whole whole lot then
for that game. So definitely something to keep an eye on.
And I get UCLA has played better, but again, fully
expect any anna take care of business, is Fernando.

Speaker 5 (02:03:11):
I don't, by the way, doesn't look like it happens
until before the Perdue game.

Speaker 8 (02:03:15):
That has been weird.

Speaker 5 (02:03:16):
Wisconsin at Indiana November fifteenth, then a gap between before
Indiana Purdue on November twenty I week in the second
to last week of the season.

Speaker 1 (02:03:24):
Would you prefer that?

Speaker 8 (02:03:26):
No?

Speaker 5 (02:03:27):
I like it right in the middle.

Speaker 2 (02:03:29):
Yeah, I think like the Colts had there by coming
up in a few weeks like that's one of the
better I remember the Colts had like the late the
latest by the NFL like a couple of times in
December there.

Speaker 7 (02:03:37):
Let me throw this one at you though, I think
that's awful. Don't you like having that right before Purdue
and then you're gonna have a conference championship game and
then you want to have a couple of weeks run
in in the uh the playoff there. Maybe maybe it
does come at a good time as you really get
ready for important games after that Purdue game.

Speaker 2 (02:03:56):
Yeah, yeah, I'm probably more of a mid season But
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:04:00):
Is Fernanda Minoza the Heisman front runner right now?

Speaker 2 (02:04:05):
I think, betting wise, he is. I think one thing
that will hurt him down the stretch is Indiana won't
be in many of these marquee time slots, and I
think that matters. I don't agree with it, but I
think it.

Speaker 1 (02:04:19):
Yeah, it'sertainly a factor, which can't be like sitting here like,
oh it's not Yeah, we're human.

Speaker 2 (02:04:23):
Where did Indiana play last week?

Speaker 1 (02:04:25):
Peacock?

Speaker 8 (02:04:26):
You know?

Speaker 2 (02:04:26):
I mean yeah, now Saturday they're going to be at
noon on Fox, which will help. But you know, Penn State,
that game has lost its luster, you know, coming up
in November there, So you know, you look at where
game Day's going, you know, Diego Pavia and Vanderbilt this weekend.
I mean, you know he's up there right now. He's
got a little bit more of the flair to his

(02:04:46):
But again, that stuff, unfortunately matters. There's bias in all
these awards. Let's be honest. You know, we got in
the debate yesterday, James, what does MVP mean? Doesn't mean
most valuable player, doesn't mean best player.

Speaker 1 (02:04:59):
Yeah, for the call, I would say their best player
is JT, but their most value player is Daniel Jones.

Speaker 5 (02:05:03):
Right, I would agree with that.

Speaker 7 (02:05:04):
It's interesting. I was reading a bunch of articles yesterday
about what makes a running back of the MVP when
that does happen, and it's usually going to be somebody
right around two thousand yards and over twenty touchdowns on
a team that does very, very well. So JT's in
the mix, Like if he keeps on this base right now,
there's a chance.

Speaker 1 (02:05:25):
This is so wild that we're talking about the Colts
having two MVP candidates. I would have never guessed this
even if they had somehow been this record. If you
told me they would be seven and one or six
and one at this point in the year, at the
start of the year, I would have thought, oh, they
game managed, and they won a couple of games they
weren't supposed to and got lucky here or there. But

(02:05:46):
this isn't. Look they're putting the belt to folkses behind
throughout this season so far, and I think the latest
game was probably their best or most biggest statement game.
And where do you go from here? And I think,
again I was teetering on tool youb all in. I
think at this point I'm bought in. You should make
a move before the deadline and go get some type
of defensive playmaker.

Speaker 2 (02:06:05):
And the awards don't stop there. I mean Rookie of
the Year offensively, I think Tyler Warren's got to be
the favorite. We'll see if he's an All Pro right now,
first team And again they'll be biased towards Jackson Dart
if the Giants all of a sudden get it together
somehow and then Coache a little bit of height there.

Speaker 5 (02:06:22):
But I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:06:24):
Again, it's a quarterback running back thing, like who are
you gonna lean towards.

Speaker 2 (02:06:26):
I tend to think it's quarterback that worries me more
Mark and then definitely coach of the year's gotta be
Shane Steiking so far.

Speaker 10 (02:06:32):
That's me.

Speaker 2 (02:06:33):
He's probably the most obvious of all the awards. Something
out there like Colts related that one. I mean that
dude was on a top five list of being the
first coach fired.

Speaker 1 (02:06:42):
I'll tell you what. And he has been on fire
when it comes to the play calling. The way he's
able to scheme guys open is unbelievable. I mean, it's
almost like watching a college game sometimes, because that's usually
what players will tell you. There's a difference between the
NFL Open and college Open. He gets his NFL guys
college open some of these plays. And I get that
Daniel Jones made a couple of great window tight window

(02:07:04):
throws throughout the year, But most of the time, man,
he is thrown to some guys who have plenty of
room to you know, make the catch and then make
some yards after the catch.

Speaker 5 (02:07:11):
Shane Steigen's the overwhelming favorites win Coach of the Year,
Tyler Warner's third best odds for Offensive Rookie of the Year,
Daniel Jones has eighth best odds to win MVP, and
Jonathan Taylor's far and away the overwhelming Offensive Player of
the year canon that is. That's cool, baby, it's crazy.

Speaker 1 (02:07:29):
We're in the twilight zone. Baby, I like it.

Speaker 7 (02:07:31):
You look at the AFC South right now, two game
lead over Jacksonville. Texans are just two and four after
the loss last night, and Titans we've talked about they
playing this week, are just one and six. I mean,
Jacksonville has not looked all that great. You can see
in the next month or here you can see the
Colts having like a three, three game lead to play
with here Kevin pretty soon.

Speaker 2 (02:07:52):
Yeah, I think the AFC South will eventually get to
the point where I'll be uttering the phrase God Bless
the AFC South like I do quite often. It's the
division that usually keeps on giving. I thought Jacksonville start
with fluky. I thought they were just forcing a bunch
of turnovers, and if you look at it, I believe
the last two weeks they forced zero and the records
going too and they forced a million those first four games.
So yeah, that's something to get into a little bit

(02:08:13):
more about the Colts. Nick Crosscover Stewart, those interceptions, you
can't bank on those every week. Your defense has got
to start naturally getting off the field a little bit more.

Speaker 7 (02:08:22):
Yeah, Nick Cross has been my most pleasant surprise on
defense so far this year.

Speaker 1 (02:08:26):
I just in a contract year for him, He's just
been solid. Yeah, he's been really good.

Speaker 2 (02:08:31):
They continued to growth throughout his career, a really nice
four year growth, which again he was one of the
younger players to be drafted in his draft.

Speaker 7 (02:08:37):
Yeah, and you know, we talk about whether or not
Chris Ballard wants to make a move and sure up
that defense. Certainly, I agree with you, Kevin defensive line.
I don't know, But are they just counting on getting
healthy as the year goes along, to getting a bunch
of guys back as much as anything?

Speaker 1 (02:08:51):
Who's hurt?

Speaker 2 (02:08:52):
Yeah, I mean until Sunday, nobody was hurt?

Speaker 7 (02:08:55):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (02:08:55):
Or I mean D line room, Oh D right, I
mean D line wise, who was before Sunday? Yeah, I
mean corner, Yes, I can point to that, but really,
there's no other injuries on defense besides corner.

Speaker 1 (02:09:07):
Now, corner, there's a ton.

Speaker 7 (02:09:08):
But so I met you're thinking, you get your corners
back and you'll be much better.

Speaker 10 (02:09:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:09:12):
I'm more of a yeah, definitely more of a pass rush.

Speaker 1 (02:09:15):
Saying less Jervarius Wars lining up on defensive end make
the move. When he gets back, we'll put Josh Downs
back on there again.

Speaker 5 (02:09:22):
Mark, see if.

Speaker 1 (02:09:22):
Tyler Warren can be an edge rusher? Was that one
of our hearts?

Speaker 10 (02:09:24):
You can do everything.

Speaker 7 (02:09:26):
I wouldn't be surprised if you had a two sec game.

Speaker 1 (02:09:28):
Would you recruited as an athlete to Penn State? Yeah,
that's so cool. I want to be an athlete one day.

Speaker 7 (02:09:34):
Wouldn't you love to see Penn State get it all
together and just upset Ohio State this week? Think about that.
We'll be back tomorrow. Scott Dolson from Indiana Athletics joints

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
