Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
I don't know if anybody noticed, but it's football weather outside.
We've got initial fifty three man roster to talk about
for the Indianapolis Colts. Probably some more maneuvering to be
done today before they announce another fifty three man roster
at about four o'clock today. At some point Shane Steichen
will meet with the media and we'll find out what's
going on. Are Colts guys, James Boyd from the Athletic

(00:23):
Kevin Bowen right here in ninety three five one oh
seven five the fan and Mark Dyketon just refreshing that
button to see who was getting cut and waved all
day long yesterday. I'm jeff Rickard. Welcome to the show
this morning. How you doing today?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Man?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Doing all right?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Everybody?

Speaker 4 (00:35):
James, Yes, sir. Just to clarify, we will hear from
Chris Baller later today, but not Shane Stikeen.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Hmmm, interesting stuff. We ought to be hearing from lou Anarumo.
The way that the defense is coming together. It seems
like a lot of lou Ana Rumo sway on that
side of the football.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Kevan's going to say, his voice clearly being heard. Yeah again,
just to echo kind of what I was saying yesterday.
I have not seen this much cornerback movement really, and
I shouldn't even say cornerback, I should say any positional
movement in the nine years of Chris Bouard. And obviously
yesterday we did see a big name cut in the
sense of a second round pick, and that is Juju Brent.

(01:12):
So I know it's a conversation that we had over
the last handful of days. I thought he would still
make it, but boy, they are retooling this roster and
James Wood it sounds like they're maybe not done with
another veteran that they're bringing into workout here later today.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, I was able to confirm that Mike Hilton will
be in Indianapolis today to work out for the Colts.
This is a guy who started, I believe, fifty plus
games in his career, has starteen in receptions in his career,
and oh, by the way, prior to join the Miami
Dolphins for their offseason program this year, he said, the
last four years in Cincinnati with Ding Ding ding Lewin Rumo.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yeah, a lot to look forward to just four linebackers
on the rosters. You guys had surmised on the defensive
side of the football and a tight end. Just as
you guys it talked about yesterday, Julani Woods no longer
part of the program. We talked about some more maneuvering
that will need to be done today. It almost always
happens that way. Anybody that you guys could see still

(02:11):
on the bubble right now, somebody who could still be
brought back. You talked about bringing another cornerback, but anybody
that was waived yesterday that might be around again.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
I'm trying to think, I mean for right now, I'm
just trying to see. I guess what the Mike Hilton
addition potentially couldn't mean for the rest of the cornerback room.
So if anybody seem a little bit nervous, perhaps it's
that room because that's the one that's been almost influx
this offseason.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
I feel like, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Also, Juju Brentz, an Indianapolis area native, after his in
the midst of his second training camp, has been released
at this point in time, was that a bit of
a surprise to you at all?

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Third year year for Juju? You know again, I think
there were some tea leaves over the last handful of days.
I think I said it's you guys on air, like, boy,
this is one that I am going to feel kind
of like an idiot if a you know whatever four
oh one rules around on Tuesday and he does show
up on the waved list, and.

Speaker 4 (03:06):
In fairness, see you it was not four to one,
a little more like five.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah officially, yeah, yeah, it was a lot later. It's
unfortunate because I think Juju is a good dude. I
think he's done a lot for the community there, but
he's missed more games than Anthony Richardson. I mean, you know,
when you put it just in that light, that's really difficult.
And he also missed boy, it was close to a month.

(03:31):
It seemed like here definitely multiple weeks here in this
year's training camp. And you know, ever since the hire
of lou An Arumo, we've had this conversation where we
have to start referring to guys as lou An Arumo
guys versus Gus Bradley guys.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, you were on this early and.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Juju doesn't fall into that boat like a lot of
these guys. And that's just the reality of where things
stand on the defensive side of the ball. And you
know what a credit to Chris Baller for opening up
his ears and listening to lou and realizing, Hey, our
secondary has been a major issue in recent years, our
cornerback depth. Do you think about this time last year, James,

(04:10):
the cornerback group, we were screaming and yelling on this Wednesday.
You got to go out and find guys, and sure
enough they found Samuel Walmack and they claimed him and
he ended up playing important STAPs for them in the
month of September. Well, now Samuel Walmack's not even making
this team, and you're referencing, you know, Mike Hilton as
a guy that they're bringing in here. So this isn't it.

(04:31):
I don't again, I've never seen a position group that
they have put this much attention to in one offseason. Now,
are there some questions there? Yeah, you have several of
these guys that didn't even play.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Part of it is age. I'm like, man, they got
some old cornerbacks.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, Age, and for whatever reason, you know, guys like Blackman,
Makai Blackman, acl didn't play last year, Xaviing Howard didn't
play football last year. So they have to prove themselves,
you know, here in the year of twenty twenty five.
But just in general, I do think with the defensive
system changing and LouAnn Arimo's arrival and the personnel changing,
this is what you want to see out of your

(05:07):
general manager. We have an issue at a position, we
need to go out and try to address it, and
they have done that in a very very major way.
And we'll see what it looks like here coming up
a week from Sunday.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well, it's gonna be a lot of fun to see
how it all shakes out when the game start getting played.
And it'll be interesting today to see if there are
a few more roster maneuvers to be had for the
Indianapolis Cults, and we'll see how that all plays out.
Last night, the Indiana Fever coming up with a much
needed win. James Boyd is they all of a sudden
with that win catapult themselves into sixth place right now

(05:41):
in the playoff race. The top eight make the teams
and now have a little bit of a two game
cushion over the ninth place Los Angeles Sparks. So that
was a big win for the Fever last night. They
could be right there on the edge fighting for their
lives if they lose that game last night, and they
might still be, but they're in a much better spot now.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Absolutely to Lexi Hall had the nod of her head
early in the game, got knocked out of that game
really and then came back and still was a big,
big contributor to that team, plus thirty one in her
twenty three minutes. I got a kick out of seeing
her express herself to Indie Star after the game about
how it felt. She said, the not so was so

(06:19):
big on her head and for context there she ran
into Gabby Williams of the Seattle Storm, or they ran
into each other rather Yeah, I mean I was thinking, man, Lexi,
the coltie some you know, safeties or cornerbacks, we'll.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
Give you a call.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
And the help of the youth movement there.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah, she was able to, you know, come back into
the game contribute, And I just thought, again aside from
her and in her saying she's okay, you know that
the nod of her head honestly is kind of jarring
to see. But again, collective efort from everyone involved. Eliah
Boston was brilliant last night. Twenty seven points. Kelsey Mitchell,
I believe broke the single season scoring record for the
Fever Odyssey, Sims shout out to Otsssey Simms. I mean,

(06:54):
this is somebody who was on the roster a couple
of weeks ago, and she comes in and has a
huge game, and I think when she banked in that
three in the fourth quarter, everyone's just like, it's your night.
So not only was it a big win, but the
way they did it was true. You know, it kind
of felt like the Pacers in a sense where everyone's involved,
everyone's feeling good, and you go out there and kind
of proves mighty wrong.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Yeah, for most of the second half, really all the
second half, Seattle never really was. Yeah, that was a beat.

Speaker 1 (07:20):
They've probably had better individual games this season, I think
the Commissioner's Cup win Indigo. But in terms of like urgency, yeah, yeah,
like that was met last night. So yes, wonderful performance. Yeah,
James pointed out so many individuals Leah Boston continues to
have a really nice season. So now they go out

(07:41):
last and that type of urgency has to be there
because again the Sparks the Valkyriz these next two games,
teams are right there with them in the standings there
and based off what Stephanie White said, to Jake yesterday,
it doesn't sound like the Caitlin Clark return is going
to happen here anytime soon. She mentioned five practices needed,
and right now she's at zero. And we know how

(08:04):
practices work. When you're in season, you don't practice very often,
maybe twice maybe three times a week. So don't expect
the return to Caitlyn Clark anytime soon. So this bunch
is gonna have to try to continue to muster up
what they did last night here for the final couple
right your season weeks?

Speaker 4 (08:19):
Can I give a shout out real quick, absolutely shout
out to Q, you know, listener of the show, fan
of the showut permanent shot out.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
So I had two free tickets to the Fever game yesterday.
I had given them away originally, and then the person
I gave them too came back and said, oh I
can't make it, and I honestly forgotten to give them
away again. And so I reached out on Twitter yesterday
maybefore thirty, and I was like, Hey, anybody want to
go to the game. You got thirty minutes to apply
to this tweet to White Loved Women's Basketball. You applied

(08:47):
told me, Hey, you know I want to show my
daughter that the woman can get it done too, So
gave him the tickets. He tells me. I'm assuming he
had a great time, and so shout out to Q man.
Got a chance to go to what I believe was
turned out to be a really good game and also
especially well night for Kaitlin Clark. You though she didn't play.
Everyone there got one of the t shirts with a
new logo on it from Nike, and you know, Kaitlyn
Clark was here. That was sort of the theme yesterday

(09:09):
for yesterday's game, So a cool environment for him and
his daughter. So I'm glad those tickets went to somebody
who could really enjoy him.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
I saw Stephanie white Rock and the new CC logo
on the sideline line if you superstitches, I guess, keep
it on. Yeah, don't take that thing off. At this
point in time, they could use all the they can
get as they try to head down the stretch. And
we'll tell you more details on that coming up in
just a moment. Any other big news around the NFL
that surprised you guys or race dry brows.

Speaker 1 (09:33):
Yes, I always kind of pay attention to some of
the local names and what happens to them on cut
down day. Carson Steele did get cut. Obviously, he was
really one of the darlings I think of the NFL
this time of year last year. So he got cut
by the Chiefs. So, you know, we'll see how the
next twenty four to forty eight hours play out. You know,
oftentimes you see that headline and it's jarring, oh my gosh,

(09:54):
but you know, said player gets cut and then boom,
it's a waiver claim and they turn out to be
and it's a situation that they're now coveted in again.
So we'll see how things kind of play out there
for him. So that was a name that I saw
jump out there, if anyone cares. Sam Ellinger got caught
by the Broncos. They decided not to keep a third quarterback.
The Colts did keep Riley Leonard on their fifty three

(10:16):
man roster. It's just kind of a roster numbers game.
Some teams choose to play, some teams choose not to play.
So yeah, those are a couple of names that stood
out to me. And tonight we've got TJ. McConnell night
over at Victory Field m Are.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
They have a bobblehead over there ownder for him or
it is just the.

Speaker 1 (10:31):
Do not know about the bobblehead, but I'm not saying
there is.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
I don't know, just a question.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
I know about the first pitch and I know TJ
McConn again, we're sliding into first base, we're moving runners over.
I believe a hidden ball trick might be a nice totally, Yes.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Every stolen base should be acknowledged as a TJ McConnell. Sure,
as a statistic.

Speaker 6 (10:53):
I'm all for it.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
So should be a beautiful night.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Over the autographs signing, get their early autograph signing.

Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yes, five thirty I believe for that. Yes, TJ McConnell.
Knight over at the vicar.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
All right, we'll tell you all about everything else that
happened in the world of sports while you were sleeping.
We'll do it as we continue, and a big roster
of guests that will tell you about next two as
we continue. On the Fan on a Wednesday ninety three
five one oh seven five of the Fan, Good morning everyone.
If you're just jumping in your car or you're taking
whatever transportation to work right now, you got the earbuds in,

(11:23):
you want to know what's going on with the Indianapolis Colts.
They have an initial fifty three man roster NFL mandated
cut down time four o'clock in the afternoon yesterday the
Colts met that didn't officially announce it for about an
hour after that. Kevin Bowen kind of what we had
talked about yesterday, especially at tight end cornerback right, well, tight.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
End, certainly, I didn't think Gilani would to make the
team corner though, I thought Juju Brents would would make it,
So yeah, that to me was a surprise. Now is
their merit behind it is a reason, certainly, and we
kind of went over that the first segment will continue
to go over that throughout the day. But they doesn't
sound like they're done at corner either. So it's pretty
amazing how big will one to eighty that position specifically

(12:03):
has taken under lou Anarumo. They kept eleven defensive linemen,
which is so on brand for Chris Ballard. I don't
know how you have room for all these defensive tackles,
but that's typical Ballard. Just four linebackers though, so we'll
see what happens today. Waiver claims. Usually you see those
names start to trickle out around lunchtime and Chris Boward

(12:26):
will speak to the media a little bit after that.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Twelve forty five. From what you guys had told me
earlier in James Boyd, they may not be done at
cornerback yet.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Yeah, they're bringing in Mike Hilton her sources to the
Athletic that and he will work out for the Colts today,
So he could be another addition to this team if
you're looking at what he actually will bring. He's more
of a slot guy, So I wonder if that's somebody
they would look at to potentially backup kennymore the second
or considering they might play with more cornerbacks on the

(12:54):
field this year under Luanarumo. Just somebody else who's proven
he can play at a fairly high level old fifty
game in his career, thirteen receptions in his career and
again has played for Luinroumo for the last four years,
so he's very familiar with the system.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Kevin, one other question, I want to ask you about
six wide receivers. I don't think there were any real
surprises there, but they had some good choices to pick from,
did they not.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
Yeah, I thought the six were pretty clear. Nothing against
coleman Owen and Lawan Treadwell. I think both of them
had really nice preseasons, and I think in a perfect
world you would throw them onto the practice squad. But
you know, the wide receiver groups went relatively healthy as well.
I'd throw running back in there as another area that
they should look to add, especially if Tyler Goodson is
going to miss any time to start the regular season.
And I don't have really any confidence in a pass

(13:42):
catching running back for the Colts right now, so that
would be something that I would look into as well.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
All Right, we'll find out more about the Colts a
little bit later on today. Last night over at the
field House, Indiana Fever improved their record to twenty and
eighteen on the season with a dominant ninety five seventy
five win over the Seattle Storm. That now means they
are in sixth place in the league. The top eight
will make the playoffs. They're three and a half games
behind the fourth place Phoenix Mercury for a home spot

(14:08):
in the first round. They are two up on LA
for the ninth spot. That would be the first spot
on the outside looking in. But a big night for
Lea Aboston, Kelsey Mitchell, and Odyssey Simms.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
James.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
Boy, Yeah, sh out to Ottysey Simms. I believe she's
like a former number two pick in it's kind of
bounced around the league in recent years. But she's contributed
to his team very well. And you could just tell
this team really enjoys being around each other and obviously
winning helps that. And they got a huge one last night.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
Yes they did. Eleab Boston twenty seven points, nine rebounds,
Kelsey Mitchell twenty one points. She now has seven hundred
and seventy points for the season, a brand new Kevin
Indiana Fever single season scoring record for her.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
Buck get her she did in college at Ohio States,
and she has done it here in the WNBA. And
shout out speaking of the Big ten to Mackenzie Holmes.
I know there were some people in the building last
night that wanted to see the former IU all time
leading scorer, who unfortunately is battled injuries in her early
w care but a couple buckets late last night as
she got in as that game started to get out

(15:04):
of hand. So shout out to one of the more
beloved Hoosiers there for Terry morn.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
All Right, and the Indiana Fever. As I said, move
on without Caitlin Clark for the time being. Sixteen games
in a row she's missed now for them, but the
entire fieldhouse and her head coach were wearing the new
Caitlin Clark logo T shirts from Nike last night.

Speaker 4 (15:24):
James, Yeah, the logo to me looks better when you're
further away from it. I feel like I can see
it better because up close I'm like, eh, not really
feeling it, but backing up, it looks better to me.
So shout out to Nike. They think about these things
a lot more than I do.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Obviously, they will play those nights place Los Angeles Sparks
on Friday at ten pm out in Los Angeles. Will
keep an eye on that. Major League Baseball Last night
the Cubs back in play, but they did not have
a night. They lose to the San Francisco Giants late
five to two. You did not stay up to watch
that one, did you.

Speaker 5 (15:54):
Well, No, it's the first pitch is like quarter to ten. No,
I watched a little bit. I was not staying up
Blake to watch them.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Dodgers also out West beat up on the Red six
to three. The final score there Pittsburgh over the Saint
Louis Cardinals eight to three, and the White Sox lost
to Kansas City five to four. No joy anywhere for
any of these teams that we follow year.

Speaker 5 (16:13):
A great night, Kevin. Are you officially throwing in the
towel on your Reds yet?

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Reds are dead?

Speaker 6 (16:19):
It was it was fun while lasted.

Speaker 3 (16:20):
Tip.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Thank you, Rick Carlisle, and you're wearing the plot Rickens
T shirt today.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Indeed, I'm waiting for Jeff to tell me about Elie
Day the cruise running the bases, to try and give
me some uplifting news.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
Sure I can pull that well.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
Was there anything about him running the base as well?
To get me over the five losses in the last
six games?

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Like Mark, I was not awake to see that game
last night. That's how that goes over at Victory Field.
The Indians also lost the Buffalo Bisons, but they will
be playing again tonight at six thirty five on TJ
McConnell Knight. As we're talking.

Speaker 4 (16:51):
About just a month, you will have the power of
what I believe to be one of the best bench
players in the NBA, kind of powering them all the tryhards,
get out there and try hard all right.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Tennis? Last night, Coco Golf wins at the US Open
as they start to move through the second round there.
I did watch a little bit two nights ago Venus
Williams in her return now that she's in her forties,
well into her forties. She lost a three set match
to the fifth seed overall. But man, she's got she's
still got some game. Oh yes, she might be playing.

(17:24):
She might be playing another three four years.

Speaker 4 (17:26):
Let's go, hey, I mean that is what greatness looks like.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Anything else you want to throw on KB.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
Well, I mean quite the announcement yesterday, right, didn't we
see someone going to knee buried the.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Lead here and going to bring that out just a
moment there. I'm not my lead, but please share your
thoughts with the class.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
Well, I think we'll always have a bit of a
connection to this couple of one, Travis Kelcey and Taylor Swift.
Didn't we get mister Kelsey in the building at Lucas
Oil this year for one of those nights of the concert?
I believe she what's the song is at Karma Mark
where she well reference if the guy and the Chiefs
is there or not? And the crowd of reps is

(18:05):
that right?

Speaker 5 (18:06):
Yeah, I think that's the one.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
I forget.

Speaker 5 (18:07):
The Exult High School is the one that, like she wrote,
I forget the exact lyric.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
But at one point during the song Karma, she said,
you know, boy on the Chiefs, and all of a sudden,
Lucas Oil. Arguably the loudest roarer Lucas Oils had in
the last decade was when Taylor Swift said that so love.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
I love Let's go, I love love. I'm happy for
these kids.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
They're sorry kids this way. I guess, well, yeah, that's
how you my age. Yeah, I was like, I'm like
these guys like three five. But shout out to the
photographer and whoever signed the NDA's because that was not
leaked by somebody else, because you know, TMZ people, People Magazine,
hell Adam Schefter and Ian Rappaport probably wanted to leak that.

(18:53):
But it was cool to see that they got to
announce that on their own via Instagram.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
So here's what's cool ed.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Kelsey said he was quoted by one of those organizations
you were talking about as saying that the proposal actually
happened like two weeks ago and they've been sitting on it.
How does that stay secret?

Speaker 4 (19:08):
Yeah, I mean, hey, you give me a large chunk
of money to stay silent.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
Right, you'll never here to peep out of me again.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Congratulations to them. And of course, the big joke already
is somebody was asking on ESPN radar this morning, is
that the last ring when he gets married that he'll
ever get.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
I'm not sure I'll never count the chiefs out.

Speaker 5 (19:29):
Yeah, somebody was saying it might be his last year
playing because it's this thirteenth NFL season and there's thirteen
tied to Taylor Swift quite a bit, so that might
be the year that he hangs it up, goes to
be a husband.

Speaker 2 (19:40):
Well, congratulations to them, Come out up and rub. We'll
talk a little bit more about the Colts getting ready
for their first week of the season now, as they
are just a week and a half away. And if
you step outside this morning, you're gonna feel football weather.
It's a little chilly out there this morning comparatively. We'll
talk about it next as we continue ninety three five
and one to seventy five of the Fan. No only
was it long, but it was deep and why people excited.

(20:02):
We'll get to the text line full prodded Mark, does
Taylor Swift live stream that wedding whenever it takes place?

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Probably not, but I'm looking for my invite though I
would like to attend that wedding. It's going to be
a who's who all the pjs that will be flying. Yeah,
I'm gonna agree. That's Sabrina Carpenter.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
Honestly, if it did get streamed, it will probably break
every streaming record ever.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (20:28):
I think they said the podcast that she was on
with the Kelsey Brothers broke like is a Guinness World record, which.

Speaker 4 (20:34):
Yeah, I know YouTube had to be just smile from
ear to ear like. Yes, I'm glad you used our
platform for this.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Apparently they were engaged when she was on that show
about that.

Speaker 4 (20:44):
Hey again, India for her, Good for.

Speaker 5 (20:46):
Them, happy for him.

Speaker 2 (20:48):
I saw some video circulating yesterday too. Back in twenty
twenty three when they were first dating. Somebody asked Caitlin
Clark when she was in Iowa if she thought that
this would be a real relationship. He goes, yeah, they're
gonna get married. I was playing that all day long yesterday.
So she's psychic too, I.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
Was gonna say, don't say that about me.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
So something you want to tell us, James, no.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
News this morn I'm dead serious.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Good morning everyone, Welcome in to the Fan Morning Show.
Yesterday was cutdown day in the National Football League. The
Colts have an initial fifty three man roster. If you're
just joining us, we'll give you some thoughts on that.
I know, Kevin Bowen, you had put a couple of
thoughts updating what your predicted initial fifty three man roster
was yesterday, and you went back and updated those things,
and probably the one or two biggest thoughts you have are.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Well definitely the Juju Brents. You know, anytime he caught
a second round pick selling on his rookie contract, it's news.
Jilani Woods, I don't think he's a former third rounder,
so yes, it is news. But again I didn't think
he was trending to be on the roster. I would
say one certain positive over the last month. I mean,
if you look at the Colts starters a week from

(21:58):
Sunday against Miami, really they're gonna trot out twenty one
of the twenty two expected starters. I would say the
only guy that got hurt to the degree where he
will not be out there Week one, unfortunately, won't be
out there at all. The season is justin Wally, the
third round pick out of Minnesota. So when you think

(22:18):
about that from an injury standpoint, I know, obviously there
were some ups and downs and some roller coaster moments
over the last month. That's a pretty good bill of health.
And you know, Wally, while he was having a nice camp,
I mean, he still was a rookie starter. It's not
like whatever. It's one of the side of Lucas Oil
Stadium guys that you have up there. So I would
say overall, a pretty good bill of health. James. They

(22:39):
only put one guy on IR. They could have put
two on IR to back Jalen Carlies. And it doesn't
sound like he's going to be out for too too long.
You got to be out for at least a month
with those rules there. So you know, that's a very
popular topic training camp, preseason injuries, injuries, injuries, and if
you look around the league, there are a lot of
teams that are in far worse shape than the Colts.
So all in all, it's it's a pretty good bill

(23:00):
of health over the last month.

Speaker 2 (23:01):
James, is that you on Twitter yesterday that I saw
tweeting out the old picture of Wesley French and Will
Freeze standing next to each other and said, it's officially
all gone now the French fries are out.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (23:12):
Yeah, uh fries. Yeah, that was my editor, Jim i
Elo who tweeted that out after I got the scoop
that Wesley French had been cut. So yeah, no more
French fries for the Colts. However, that is a nature
of the business, and it's Kevin is alluded to. It
doesn't mean that your career it's over or you're done.
A lot of these veterans, guys like Lakwan Treadwell. I

(23:35):
know Wesli French was technically wide because he hasn't reached
the four year threshold just yet to be considered a
veteran or a vested veteran. However, these are familiar names.
I sent him to at least end up on a
practice squad somewhere, if not in Indianapolis. So that's the
next step is just figuring out, Okay, who's gonna get
brought back on that practice squad and how does that
affect the rest of your team, because as we've seen,

(23:56):
you can call those guys up, you know, and use
them on Sundays a few times a year. So that
is the next step, Kevin.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
You any surprise at all that Khaleil Herbert, a veteran
running back that was brought in, has had some success
in the league. You were talking about concerns that they
don't really have a pass catching running back at this
point in time. Not that he's a dominant pass catcher,
but a guy with some NFL experience. We're surprised that
he was one of.

Speaker 1 (24:19):
The cuts a little bit. You know, he battled the
hamstring injury in the month of August. Yeah, I do
have some questions about what you're going to do on
third down Week one. Jonathan Taylor to me just as
great of a first and second round runner. He is
as good as anyone in the league third down, not
as forte. I mean, I've probably watched Taylor drop i
don't know, five six seven balls here over the last month.

(24:40):
That's just not what he does very well. So you know,
that's a waiverclaim area that I'll be curious about today.
Anything there, you know, off of the tackle would be
another spot. And then certainly depth at linebacker. Typically the
waiver claims I think they tend to shy away from
positional need versus are there guys in the draft that

(25:03):
you missed out on that are now available to you?
You know, when you think about it. The Colts, you know,
they had a nice hit rate on their six and
seventh round picks, Riley Leonard, you know, Hunter Wohler. Were
there any guys in that range where they wanted to
get them but they just didn't have enough picks? And
now are they on the open market? Obviously they've really
found I know Kenny Moore and Jack Doler are like

(25:25):
the poster childs of unbelievable waiver claims. But you know,
even like Pierre de Seer or al KaDee Mohammad. You know,
last year Samuel Wollmack came in and played an important
role form Luke Tanuda made this fifty three man roster
as an offensive tackle. He was a formal waiver claim.
So yeah, that'll be something to keep an eye on
again around noon today. As usually when you see those

(25:47):
and guys like Juju Brentz will have to clear waivers.
We'll see about what exactly the future holds for him
Jalannie Woods, you know clearing waivers, what is a future
hold for those guys there? And is the marriage officially
over for those guys? You know, they could come back
to your practice squad.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
Yeah, but you.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
Know, do they you know, get claimed and go somewhere else,
and do they look at the situations and say, hey,
I don't like how I was looking here. You know,
I've had my four years for July one, three years
for Juju. I think it's time that somebody else gets
their eyes on me.

Speaker 4 (26:19):
Yeah, and just to piggyback off of the running back
pass catching running back comment certainly something to look into
because I'm looking at Cleliar Herbert's career. He's just not
a pass catching back overall. He had ten catches last
year for twenty five yards, so that is obviously not
going to be a lot. He only has fifty three
catches in his career for four years, so without that

(26:41):
element in his game and then being injured, I think
his the idea of him making the team would have
been more so for like special teams purposes and being
another back that can you know, take some workload off
of JT. But yeah, I think that is an area
that can certainly pursue because DJ Gidding's proved it in college.
They he can catch pass out of the back field.
But it is different than the pros and you probably

(27:01):
want some more insurance there.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
You know.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
You talk about the influence that lou Ana Rumo has
had on the shaping of this roster and all the
cornerbacks that are coming in, guys that he has worked
with in the past, and we're seeing what they've done
in the free agency by bringing in a corner and
a safety and really beefing up that side of the football.
And you talk about the age. It kind of makes
another indication, Kevin, does it not that this group certainly

(27:25):
Chris Ballard I would think, and maybe even Shane Steichen
like they got to win right now. There there's not
a lot of development there on the on the defensive
side of football and the secondary.

Speaker 1 (27:33):
Well, yeah, that part of me wants to say, duh.
I mean, when you have the resume of second and Ballard, yeah,
you better win out. And you know, really, Anna Rumo
has never been a big playing the young dudes in Sincy.
You know, there's kind of always a little bit of
a pushback and I mean, if you look at it
and James, you had this report yesterday. I've been working
out Mike Hilton today, thirty one year old Nickel Corner, who, honestly,

(27:54):
I feel like he's had some games where he's kind
of wrecked the Colts in his career. Although I'm a
little concerned that he got cut by the Dolphins. Don't
the Dolphins need all the corners in the world right now?

Speaker 4 (28:03):
Revenge tour. He's going to join the Colts and beat
down the Dolphins week one and say, hey, I told
you I can still play.

Speaker 1 (28:09):
So him and Xavier Howard both, Yeah, gonna be wagging
their fingers week one at the Dolphins. I mean, if
they make that signing, they will have a twenty nine
year old Tavaria's Howard, thirty year old Kennymore, thirty two
year old Xavier Howard, thirty one year old Mike Hilton
at corner.

Speaker 4 (28:24):
Get the Canes out.

Speaker 1 (28:26):
I mean, when you think about the being gay out,
if I had a rank positions around the NFL, you
ideally don't want to be old at. I would think
Corner would be one of them. Yeah, So boy, that
is again it's a total infusion of guys, and there's
plenty of resume with all those guys, obviously.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
THEAH, but also the young guy they brought in, twenty
six year old Mika black Man is coming off in
ACL correct, so you're not sure how he'll exactly respond
to that. So there are some question marks there with
those resumes.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
Yeah, I mean you could be playing two guys in
week one, Howard, I don't think it's played football twenty
one months and Blackman might be the same sort of calendar. Yeah,
so it is very very it's a huge change. But again,
like I said to lead off the show, I think
a genuine credit to Chris Ballard. If you are going

(29:16):
if you are bad in an area and you're going
to bring in a new defensive coordinator, you need to
make sure that the ingredients in the kitchen are what
he is looking for. So at times you might have
to swallow your pride and make some cuts that you
don't want to. But in a pass happy league, the
Colts felt it last year. Their depth of corner got
real thin, real early. This is an attempt and we'll

(29:38):
see if it works again. It's more of an aging attempt.
We'll see if it works. But definitely. They have overhauled
that entire corner group, right, Kenny Moore and Jalen Jones.
Is that it James, those are the only two coming back.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
Yeah, which honestly that sounds crazy when you put it
out loud, but yep, that is true.

Speaker 1 (29:55):
Johnson Edwards, we should mention that name. Undrafted free agent
Jonathan Edwards does make the team. I know, the undrafted
free agent streak is something that Colts fans have gotten
used to it. It ended a few years ago. But
at number thirty five, two lane cornerback, he does make
the team. So theoretically he kind of made it over Juju.
In my eyes, Yes, it's probably how I would view it.

(30:15):
And he had a really nice camp and was getting
a lot of run and the biggest thing for him
is he was largely available, which unfortunately has been so
much of Juju.

Speaker 4 (30:25):
Yeah, and if you think about it, he kind of
has a similar bill to Juju, a taller guy, kind
of longer defender. And so if the Colts feel like, hey,
we can get a guy who's less injury prone, you know,
less medical history and someone who I think again, to
your point, Kevin had some moments through our camp shout
out to him, and I'm glad he's also, you know,

(30:45):
I know he was out for a minute there with
the concussion, but hopefully he's on the men there too.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
Yeah, that was one thing at and Zionsville on the
text line two three, nineteen seventy, want to ask you
about Kevin. You kind of answered that there and you
set up a text back too, which we often do sometimes.
But he wants to know what he missed? What did
Juju Brents at this level of performance, what did he
do that they would cut him as a second rounder
on his rookie contract? And I think just not being
available that catches up to you.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
In the NFL, Yeah, played in eleven of thirty four games.
You know, we talk a lot about Anthony Richardson's injury history.
Richardson two games miss due to benching, but he still
has played in fifteen of thirty four. So you know, Juju, James,
I forget the list. It's way I think we might
be close to eight injuries. I think in his two

(31:31):
NFL seasons, Like, it's not like you've had Jolney Woods
has had just the two big season enders. Juju, It's
just been a lot of not little things so as
they've sided by him of course a lot of times,
but just a lot of injuries period. I mean we're
talking six seven, eight injuries for him. I actually think
when Juju is played, it's been decent. It's not like
it's looked like a bust on the field here. But

(31:54):
you know, availability has just been an issue. And you know,
the Chris Ballard draft record at corner you just can't ignore.
I mean, Quincy, Wilson, Rock, you Seene, Juju, Brentz. I
mean those are three second round corners that you know,
I guess Rock turned into Yanick and Gokway. I don't
know if that's necessarily a good thing or not, but it.

Speaker 2 (32:16):
Just but it all for different reasons too, whether it
was injury, Rock just all the time, and.

Speaker 1 (32:23):
Yeah, Quincy probably just fell more into kind of the
bust category. But you know, Ballard, I think back to
the draft James, I mean, he really backed Juju this year,
like after they took Justin Wally, you know, pretty bullish
on Hey, no, no, no, I don't want to flush Juju
at all. You know, I still think he can play
good football, et cetera, et cetera. And so this kind

(32:43):
of goes back to a really common theme over the
last day or so. I mean, Loui an Arumo has
got a ton of say in defensive personnel, and I
think the Juju Brents move, because again it's year three
of a rookie contract. Think it easily have him be
the sixth They could have Juju brent on the roster
and to get Jonathan Edwards to the practice squad, like
they could easily have done that. Yeah, but they chose

(33:05):
not to, And I think it's ballad certainly listening to
the new defensive coordinator.

Speaker 4 (33:08):
Can we take a look at two things though, I
do want to kind of mention we can probably get
into it later on throughout the show and revisit it.
But I know people are crushing the Juju Brince pick
because now obviously he's off the team. And really, that
twenty twenty three draft class was a rough one looking
back at it, Kevin, they had twelve picks in that
class and the only two proven starters you got out

(33:29):
of that were Josh Downs and Jalen Jones, and Jaylen
Jones may not even been started this year. Josh Downs
is kind of carrying that class. Your first pick that year.
Anthony Richardson benched, Julius Brince, Juju Brince no longer here.
Josh Downs, like I said, played well. Blake Freeland, he's
injured right now. But last season I thought he regressed

(33:50):
and really got exposed. He was not your at least
trending or tracking to be your backup swing tackle. Adi
Taimawadabar A fine player. Darius Rush. You cut Daniel Scott.
He's finally healthy this year. He'ssed his first two years
due to injury. Will Mallory okay, fine player. Evan Hall
no longer here. Titus Leo no longer here. Jaylen Jones,
like I said, is here and fighting for our starting role.

(34:11):
And then Jake Witt, the experimental seventh round lineman no
longer here as well. I think he might have retired.
Fro football actually so rough class, yeah, rough class. But
then also to give some credit where credit is due.
I know people are like man Johnny Woods, I was
a miss by you know, Shane stiking or I'm sorry
not Shane sacking Chris Ballard and they should have picked
somebody else. That twenty twenty two class has been pretty solid.

(34:34):
They didn't have first pick that year, but their first
pick in the second round was Alec Pearce. Solid player,
should get paid this offseason as long as he doesn't
get hurt. Johnny Woods, like I said, was the third
round pick that year. The next pick, he's out. But
Bernard Ryman, you found a franchise left tackle in the
third round. Paid him one hundred million dollars because he's
really good at his job. You got Nick crossing that
class as well, another starter. So to me, that class

(34:57):
looks just totally different than the tweeny twenty three class.
And that's kind of how it goes sometimes. Man, you
can't predict these things in real time, because obviously if
you could, you would change some things. But man, going
back to that class from two years ago, it is
looking pretty spooky. And Josh Downs it wasn't for him.
You really be in a mind.

Speaker 1 (35:15):
Well, I think what's truly damning about the twenty twenty
three draft, James' is you suffered so much in twenty
twenty two to reap the benefits that next April. You know,
think back in the twenty twenty two season four to
twelve and one, Jeff Saturday, Matt Ryan, all the embarrassment,
the light at the end of the tunnel is you're

(35:36):
drafting high. You know, you had the fourth overall pick.
You're obviously drafting high in each subsequent round after that.
So the thought there is it's not like a normal
draft where the culture in the middle of the pack
and it's harder maybe to find hits in that. No no, no,
you're hot. I mean you are top five in every
round and you got a bunch of picks too, and
yet you have the misses of you know, James just

(35:59):
pointed out the pretty much three of your first four
picks is how you would summarize it right now. And honestly,
you go back to twenty twelve, like the twenty eleven
embarrassment of going to and fourteen and that entire season
it turned into Ryan Grigson's first draft being filled with
tons on fleeen Er. Alan vic Ballard contributed for you
early on. That helped you have eleven wins out of

(36:21):
the gate, eleven wins the next year, eleven wins the
next year. So when your teams have bad years, the
again benefit of that is all right, the NFL rewards
you from a draft standpoint. Now you have to cash
in on that and I think if I were Carl Er,
say Gordon, that would really be staring at me this

(36:42):
morning of We suffered so much in twenty twenty two,
we thought, hey, we're going to create this new window. Well,
twenty twenty three has got to be the limestone of
that foundation. And again, when you're drafting as high as
you were in that draft, it should offer plenty of
opportunities to rebuild that. Yeah, and you know at some

(37:02):
premium positions cornerback, cornerback, and offensive tackle, that doesn't appear
to be the case.

Speaker 2 (37:07):
It's The Fan Morning Show ninety three five one h
seven five The Fan westpeaks for a lot of folks.
When he wants from each of you guys, he's curious,
who's the one guy that you'd still like to see
back with the cults if you had a perfect world.

Speaker 4 (37:19):
Shout out to West from the text line, I chose
chrys La Monz, and I was kind of grasping at
straws there. There weren't a lot of people where I'm like, man,
I want this guy back no matter what. But I
thought chrys La Mons was going to make the fifty
three man roster because one he is a proven veteran,
I will say a little bit older. I think he's
twenty nine, so I guess I would have added to

(37:39):
the theme of the older cornerback room. But someone who
was around last year respected in the locker room, super
Bowl champion and I thought had a really strong preseason, Kevin.
And so again that lets you know that I think
Lou and Roumo's voice holds weight, but also the coach
to do feel like they can maybe upgrade at that
backup slot position, which is what Chris Lamon's kind of

(38:01):
projected as. And he also offered some special teams capabilities
there as well.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
Yeah, that's a good one. You know, I'll probably go
just a guy that I think deserve or the guy
earned the right to be on the fifty three man roster.
I get why he's not, but I just thought coleman
Owen had a great, great training camp, and you know, James,
you're out there and you watch. I just feel naturally
the wide receivers oftentimes happen to be in front of

(38:25):
the media during practice, and like Reggie Wayne, he loves
that dude, I mean like he loves himself. Some coleman
Owen and again, God, I think.

Speaker 4 (38:34):
It's the technician part because Reggie was like that work.

Speaker 1 (38:38):
He caught one the other day to and one of
their final practices before the preseason finale, and Reggie just
goes over to him and just gives them kind of
one of those like low high fives. And for Reggie, Wayne,
that's like you know, me hugging you after Notre Dame's
first touchdown on Sunday night. Gosh, I really hope Notre
Dame scores early in that game and kind of calms
my nerves.

Speaker 4 (38:55):
But I'll take a FaceTime hug.

Speaker 1 (38:57):
What did you say, Mark? But coleman Owen like he
did everything you would want, and he's just he's in
arguably the most crowded room with the entire team. And
I don't know Anthony Gould as a return man. I
just get a little nervy. So coleman Owen they can
get him to the practice squad. I think that would
make a lot of sense.

Speaker 4 (39:15):
Jeff, who would you pick up if you had to
make an addition to the guys that they let go?

Speaker 2 (39:20):
The guy I would have said the same thing, Lama's
because I really liked you and I had talked about
it when I was at the game, at the home game.
I liked the way that he had played so far
this year. I think he'd been making plays, he was
around the ball, seemed like he was in the right
place at the right time. But he's got crowded out,
it felt like. And I wonder they'll bring in the
guy today. But I just wonder in that secondary if

(39:40):
they could use at some point a guy like that.
He's at least a practice squad guy if he doesn't
get claimed by somebody else.

Speaker 4 (39:46):
Yeah, he's a veteran though, So he got released and
so he could go where he pleases, which probably gives
the Colt's a good chance to retain him if they
want to, and if he doesn't want to move, perhaps
around the country. And then another one. So throughout there, Kevin,
I thought about just now Isaiah Land. I thought that
he had a really good training camp numbers game at
the defensive line spot. So didn't make the cut, but

(40:08):
I think that's a guy who actually probably gonna get claimed.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Yeah, they thought, if they wanted to, they could have
kept Land and cut one of the defensive tackles. They
actually cut. They kept one more defense. Ballard likes the
big boys would even they kept eleven, which is even
a big number for Ballard. It's usually like ten. So again,
as we get into today and some of the roster
gymnastics start to play out, that would be an area

(40:31):
where I think, Okay, you know, do they cut one
of those defensive tackles. Do they add elsewhere? That'll be
something to keep an eye on.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
One more thing to a lot of people wondering about
Carson Steel, and you had mentioned him at the very
beginning of the show. We're looking for pass catching running back.
I mean, is Carson Steel a guy that that could
be brought back?

Speaker 7 (40:51):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (40:51):
Yeah, I I I'll be honestly, I don't really know
Carson Steele's history as a pass catching running back there.

Speaker 4 (40:57):
I just had seven catches last year and seven team
games for twenty six yards.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
But how many snaps did he even get?

Speaker 4 (41:03):
Though he would have got more snaps as a pass
catcher if he was a better pass catcher.

Speaker 1 (41:09):
So yeah, probably I'll just take him for the pet alligator.

Speaker 4 (41:12):
I was gonna say, you want a bruiser, now, you
want somebody who can get down. Now, he can definitely
do that. But yeah, he got two hundred and one
snaps last year on offense eighteen percent of the snaps
and again just seven catches last year for not a
lot of yards.

Speaker 1 (41:26):
I think were the harder decisions for guys like Steel
or anybody really around the NFL is now that you've
gotten cut, how do you view it if that team
wants me back on the practice squad? Do I say,
you know what, all right, it's a little bit of
a hurdle. Practice squad Life's pretty good. Look the amount
of money I can make, I can get promoted seemingly,
you know, rather easily given the new rules there. Or

(41:48):
do you sit there and say, hey, the team's telling
me something. I need to go to another situation. I
need to get myself in front of you know, different eyes,
because there are you know, success on both ends of it,
guys that have just gone to the practice squad and
then reproven themselves and then they're a mainstay. Or the
Kenny Mooores and the Jack Doyles where you know those teams.

(42:09):
You know Doyle specifically, Tennessee wanted him back, the Colts
claimed him, and boom, the rest is history. It's one
of the more impressive careers given where he was drafted
or not drafted that you'll frankly ever see with the Colts.

Speaker 2 (42:21):
Yeah, and I just wonder too if if it's the
way you delivered that message, Hey, numbers game you got
caught up in that, wouldn't be surprised if you got
claimed by another team. You're a good football player. But
if not, don't be surprised if we call you back
for practice squad.

Speaker 4 (42:34):
Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of conversations like that.
You've got to see how it all shakes out.

Speaker 2 (42:38):
All right. Coming up in a moment, we will speak
with Steven Holder ESPN about his thoughts on the initial
fifty three man roster. Dave Richard going to join us
from CBS Fantasy Football later on in that hour, and
Pete Sampson Kevin Pete Sampson coming up in the nine
o'clock hour for you, my man, he's my therapist, your
therapist or your favorite guy to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
I don't think he knows that, but yeah, every year,
like I make this like creepy, like awkward intro with
him and he's kind of like.

Speaker 2 (43:04):
Yeah, I look forward to that, dude.

Speaker 1 (43:05):
I'm just doing this because you know, I'm trying to
be a nice guy, can we just get through the segment.

Speaker 5 (43:09):
And I do ask him to be on the show.
I'm like, Kevin Bones on the Show's like, God, I
guess I'll do it.

Speaker 1 (43:13):
He has no idea who I am. He's glad that
there's a.

Speaker 5 (43:15):
Restraining credit card.

Speaker 4 (43:17):
Yeah. And by the way, Pete Sampson covers the Notre
Dame fighting irish to clear up why Kevin Bowen is.

Speaker 1 (43:24):
Exciting, saying everybody does know who he is, James.

Speaker 4 (43:27):
I mean not everyone outside of you know, South Bend.

Speaker 2 (43:32):
Kevin's gonna have a good day, That's all I can
tell you. We'll talk about it next on ninety three
five and one o seven five of the Fan. We're
geting and welcome into the Fan Morning show along with
Mark Tychton, James Boyd, Kevin. But when I'm jeff Rickard
and we're talking about the Colts initial fifty three man roster,
they made that announcement. Yeah, I was talking about beef. Well,
I know we're getting there.

Speaker 4 (43:51):
I was talking about beef. I just smell it cooking there.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
I love it. You're trying to start trouble early. Oh yeah,
here for that. Kevin Bond wanted nothing to do with
the trouble, but you're pushing them in.

Speaker 5 (44:00):
No, you can't.

Speaker 4 (44:02):
You can't, duck It's sixth three. He can't be over that, Ducket.
We still see you in the bushes.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
Come on, man, would you like to introduce our next guest,
Kevin Bone a.

Speaker 1 (44:09):
Lot to get to Steven Holder with roster cuts and
certainly a quarterback storyline that is very very important for the.

Speaker 5 (44:18):
Yeah, and in a big game.

Speaker 2 (44:19):
Might I add I got a great team down there,
Notre Dame, Notre Dame Miami coming up this weekend? Steven,
did you have any words for mister Notre Dame Kevin
bowing over here?

Speaker 7 (44:32):
Hey, listen, I don't trust my guys enough to be
talking trash trash.

Speaker 5 (44:40):
Neither you deserve to have ranked teams that you cheer for.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
What is this? I just told that Jim can make
it to the kicker.

Speaker 4 (44:46):
I am disgusted. I have seen trash talk from both
of you, Like now the.

Speaker 5 (44:49):
High school dances. They're both leaning against the walls. We
want to go out there exactly. Oh, yes, you know sportsmanship?
You just playing yuck? What are we teaching the game?

Speaker 1 (44:57):
Trying to win?

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Trust her?

Speaker 7 (44:59):
Let me let me be this is not about sportsmanship. No,
I love KB, but this is not about sportsmanship. This
is about I don't want to give anybody any ammunition
because I don't trust my guys.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
I've been hurt enough times. This is about me.

Speaker 1 (45:13):
Stephen watched this team play defense too often last year. Uh,
thank you Miami Hurricanes. Yeah, Steved I have first time
starting quarterback for Notre Dame going into that environment. That's
given me a little bit of pause. But I do
like Notre Dame in some other areas on the team. Uh,
should we dive into roster cuts here? Let's go. I

(45:34):
suppose Steven hold our ESPN with us here on the
Payless Liquors hot Line. I guess I actually kind of
want to go in a different different direction because when
you joined his last Wednesday, you were fresh off the
news of, you know, your conversation with Derek Jackson, Anthony
Richardson's agent about you know, and I want to make
sure I get the words right, but you know, there
was some trust questions, and you know, we've got a

(45:55):
lot to talk about. I think I'm paraphrasing a little
bit of that quote. Any update on Richardson standing within
the team, how his team, his own team kind of
views where he's at right now franchise wise, No, I don't.

Speaker 7 (46:08):
I wouldn't say that there's much that's changed. I think
there is a little bit of wait and see, you know,
to kind of see how this plays out. I mean,
clearly the Colts are taking that approach, and I think
just wanting to see what Daniel Jones looks like, you know,
does he does he meet expectations and those kinds of things.
I mean, they're not trading Anthony Richardson, you know, certainly

(46:32):
not right now.

Speaker 3 (46:32):
Could things change?

Speaker 7 (46:33):
I guess, you know, if let's say Daniel Jones takes off,
I don't know, right I mean that maybe there's a scenario,
but right now there's no there's no intention on their
part of trading him, And I don't know that a
trade demand has even quote unquote been made to my knowledge.
Would would his agent be welcoming of such a thing

(46:55):
if it were to come to pass?

Speaker 3 (46:56):
I think so.

Speaker 7 (46:58):
But but that's not even been just us that as
far as I know. So, I don't think much has
changed there, But but I don't think it's necessarily I
g it's gotten necessarily better either, you know, for lack
of a better word.

Speaker 4 (47:14):
Steven will hear from Chris Ballard later today and again
Stephen Holder ESPN joining us on the Payloff Stickers hotline.
What questions do you have for the coach GM that
are really top of mind for you and you think
pertinent to this upcoming season or really the future of
the team as well.

Speaker 3 (47:34):
Well.

Speaker 7 (47:34):
I think there's two separate matters, I guess for for
the current team. I think, so this is a you know,
they cut certainly two two draft picks from a couple
of recent drafts. I think Juju Brents in particular. I mean,
I'm not saying it's just shocking new it's not. He
hasn't helped them at all. But you know, I think

(47:56):
he's got to. He's got to speak publicly about that.
For sure. That's the guy that's a second round pick.
I mean, that's a really high pick. Okay, I don't
want to gloss over that. I mean, I know people
are like, well, yeah, he's never done anything for him,
so of course they cut him. Yeah, but a second
round pick, it takes a lot of It takes a
lot of putting your ego aside to have to cut

(48:17):
a second round pick, or maybe it's a blow to
your ego. I should say, you know, to have to
cut a second round pick. And then I think, just
like the composition of his team, does he how does
he feel about the depth? The depth is what has
gotten them, I feel like to a large degree in
recent years, or it's been a big part of their
problem at least.

Speaker 3 (48:33):
So what's the depth?

Speaker 7 (48:34):
Like, I mean, are you really confident in your offensive
line depth? Because I have questions, you know, are you
confident in your in your linebackers? You got like one
linebacker I've ever seen.

Speaker 3 (48:45):
Play football that's available, you know.

Speaker 7 (48:48):
I mean, I'm exaggerating, but not a lot. So the
depth is a question I have. And then I think
the separate matter is obviously the quarterback situation. I want
his take on the decision. We have not heard from
him on this to be completely fair and blunt. Frankly
Shamestikeen is sometimes the worst person to talk about these

(49:08):
things because he doesn't give you any answers. And I
would say, I think if you're a skeptic of the
quarterback situation. One thing that we keep hearing about Daniel
Jones is the operation in the operation and the operation,
the pre snap, all.

Speaker 3 (49:21):
This, et cetera.

Speaker 7 (49:22):
Shane Stiken has yet to say that Daniel Jones does
X really well after the snap. Everything he's talked about
is before the snap. Well, I think we need more
than that. Okay, I think at some point does the
talent not have to matter? So I want I want
clarity on that. Okay, what does Anthony Richardson's does Anthony

(49:45):
Richardson's ability measure or how does it measure up against
Daniel Jones and what he does pre snap and walk
us through the decision, I think with a little more clarity.
I don't I don't think Shane Stikeen did that by
just repeating the same thing about the pre snap stuff repeatedly.

Speaker 2 (50:00):
One of the biggest things you think you might see
by the end of the day today.

Speaker 7 (50:05):
Well, I'm wondering about this Mike Hilton situation. I mean,
he was he was cut by the Dolphins.

Speaker 6 (50:11):
I think yes, And so he's a corner.

Speaker 7 (50:15):
It's played for lou Edrumo and apparently anyone.

Speaker 3 (50:17):
Who has ever, ever ever played for lou En Rumo.

Speaker 7 (50:20):
Is is a prospect to sign with the Indianapolis Colts
if if recent history is any indicator, So I'm interested
to see if that goes anywhere and if that does happen.
I believe if the report I read is correct, I
think he's supposed to work out today. If he if
he signs, they probably have to cut a corner there,

(50:42):
and I'm wondering who that is. So you know, we'll
see what happens there. But that could be a domino
that falls today potentially.

Speaker 1 (50:49):
And Stephen Holder went to see her from MESPN on
the Paylosslickers hot Line. Steven, how would you describe what
you think how long the leashes for Daniel Jones compared
to Joe Flacco's leash last year.

Speaker 7 (51:03):
It's interesting because I think if you're if you're the Colts,
I mean, it shouldn't be like super long, right, I mean,
if Daniel Jones looks like the Daniel Jones we fair
and the one that we've seen a lot of, I mean,
you've got to be terrified, right if that happens early
in the season. On the other hand, you were very clear,

(51:26):
Seane was very clear that he's our guy. So if
you walk that back, I mean, you know, you kind
of lose some credibility there. I don't know, so I
think he's I'm not saying he's boxed himself.

Speaker 3 (51:38):
In, but but he did kind of he.

Speaker 7 (51:40):
Did kind of lay down a gauntlet there by saying
he's a quarterback, He's our quarterback for the season.

Speaker 3 (51:45):
Of course, they did.

Speaker 7 (51:46):
Say that about Joe Flacco when they benched him, and
two weeks later we were having a different conversation. So
I don't know. I really just think it boils down
to is he is he helping them win?

Speaker 3 (52:00):
Are they winning?

Speaker 7 (52:00):
Is he helping them win? And you know, is it sustainable?
And we have no idea right now. I think the
range of possibilities for what Daniel Jones can be is
pretty wide. Frankly, you know that spectrum is pretty big
for me. So I'm very interested to see how it
plays out.

Speaker 1 (52:16):
I heard you say earlier in the week that you
felt like Shane Steichen was like a pretty early Daniel
Jones lane in this whole you know, quarterback competition, quarterback battle.
Is there a particular time in the offseason you felt
like that he started to I guess side with Jones.
I mean, obviously we saw Anthony miss seven of those

(52:37):
nine spring practices. Is there any like I guess just
kind of further context around that that general thought.

Speaker 3 (52:45):
Well, it's interesting, it's funny.

Speaker 7 (52:47):
It's kind of like after the fact, you sometimes get
clarity when you go back and you you know, I
would say, hindsight is twenty twenty, but you know, you
might see something at the time but not understand the
totality of it or the context of it. And I
would say a couple of things, even back to the
owner's meetings and James was there.

Speaker 3 (53:07):
We were Where were we?

Speaker 8 (53:08):
James?

Speaker 7 (53:11):
Yeah, that's right down on Palm Beach. We asked him,
I mean you sat there, I sat there. We all
said that breakfast with Shane Styke in where they have
the coaches availability, and we tried to grill him on
like what was going to decide this quarterback battle. They
had just signed Daniel Jones like two weeks before this, so.

Speaker 3 (53:28):
It was a very fresh story.

Speaker 7 (53:30):
First time we're talking to Shane and he just said, well,
you know, it's going to boil down to who's more consistent.
And we asked a question in seven different ways. I mean,
I'm only exaggerating a little here, and every single time
he said the exact same thing. Nope, it's going to
boil down a consistency, consistency, consistency, and I walked out
of there thinking, well, he ain't talking about Anthony Richardson. Yeah,

(53:52):
and I at that very moment, so like the last
week of March, I walked out of there like, wait
a minute, he's.

Speaker 3 (53:58):
Talking about Anthony. He's talking about Daniel.

Speaker 7 (54:01):
Jones, which we could debate whether he's consistent, but he
certainly wasn't talking about the guy who completed forty seven
percent of his passes. So why did I maybe back
off of that thinking well, Anthony was having a pretty
good camp by his standards, he was his best camp,
so I thought it was competitive and I said, well,
you know what, you know, maybe this thing is really

(54:23):
up for grabs. And then of course it went a
different way. But there were other instances I think about,
just conversations and little things that I picked up on
that I don't know that he ever got out of
that lane.

Speaker 6 (54:35):
Shane.

Speaker 7 (54:35):
I really believe he was always leaning toward Daniel Jones.
I'm not saying that's wrong, I'm not criticizing it. I'm
just just putting it out there. I think he was
always leaning that way.

Speaker 4 (54:47):
So Steven, when you looked on the defensive side of
the ball. We've seen a lot of movement in the
cornerback room and a lot of these guys coming in
are older players. And Mike Hilton, as you mentioned, is
working out for the Colts today. He's an older cornerback.
How much faith do you put into that and how
much faith can the Colts put into that when potentially
you could be starting a guy like Xavin Howard who

(55:09):
hasn't played in over a year.

Speaker 7 (55:12):
I'm skeptical. I gotta be honest. I mean, I guess
I want to trust blue An Rumo. I mean, I
think he's earned it.

Speaker 4 (55:19):
But do you think he's earned that just because I mean,
the last time we saw his defense it wasn't good. Now,
he was good a few years ago with some better players, granted,
but has he earned that? Like, because if you're Gus Bradley,
you got to be thinking, yeah, my defensive schemes might
have been different, but you never gave me this kind
of help.

Speaker 7 (55:35):
Well that's that's fair, right, And I think there's also
a knock that that's a little bit of a knock
on Amo that's been out there, which is that he
doesn't uh, he doesn't favor young players, and that clearly
seems to have credibility that accut because if you ain't
thirty years old, you know, he's probably looking at you

(55:56):
a little sideways around here, it looks like, and that
is because the reality is he wants to do a
lot of different things within his defense and young players
they don't usually respond well to that, which is you know,
I think we were talking about this recently, which is
why Justin Wallly emerging, the what he did was so
impressive because that doesn't typically happen with Lou and Rumo.

(56:18):
So so some of the personnel stuff that maybe happened
with him, some of it may have There may be
some some I don't know if fault is the right word,
but there may be some Some of that may trace
to how he uses his personnel and maybe his his
preference for not really putting young players out there and
maybe catering to to their you know, making a little

(56:41):
simpler for those young players. So I don't know, I
just I do think it's a question, and and we'll
have to see. They're giving him a lot of latitude,
Chris Ballard and Saint Stack and are giving Lou Andmo
a lot of latitude here and we'll see whether they're
right or wrong about that.

Speaker 2 (56:57):
Steven Older, thanks for stopping by as always. Try as
he might, James Boyd couldn't get any any traction going
on the Yeah.

Speaker 4 (57:03):
You know, both of you guys. We got to bring
back hatred in sports. Okay, all this sportsmanship talk, Yeah,
teach the kids better.

Speaker 2 (57:17):
Lord, have a good day, Steven. We'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 3 (57:21):
We'll pick this up in the media room.

Speaker 1 (57:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (57:23):
Oh yeah that then we'll get the unfiltered KB and
your phone.

Speaker 5 (57:28):
Yeah, I'll wear a wire.

Speaker 4 (57:29):
How about that? Yeah, you make me sick, Kevin, I
do I do?

Speaker 2 (57:33):
Love you though up for Notre Dame and give you
a chance to start going after somebody and they like
you got.

Speaker 4 (57:38):
To come to the James Boyds school of trash talk,
where you talk as crazy as you can before the
game happens. And if you lose, you know, you lose
your number. You know, people just can't reach you. And
then if you win, you make sure everybody else's numbers
still works.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
That's how it works.

Speaker 5 (57:53):
Maybe you'll get a little more chesty after you talk
to Pete Samson.

Speaker 1 (57:56):
Yeah, that'll help. Listen to the Tyrese Haliburn yesterday?

Speaker 3 (57:59):
Was that? Uh?

Speaker 1 (58:00):
Was that Logan Paul Mark?

Speaker 5 (58:02):
Yeah. Tyre's Saliburton making the second public comments was on
the Logan Paul podcast.

Speaker 1 (58:08):
Tyres Halliburton from the James Boyds School of trash talking.
He's like, oh, I delete social media during the playoffs,
but you better believe after each game winner, I'm restarting
that thing right away.

Speaker 4 (58:18):
Thank you.

Speaker 5 (58:18):
This is why I love Tyre's Halliburton.

Speaker 4 (58:20):
He is an honest man. Let's all be more honest.

Speaker 1 (58:24):
With our from the music. When you don't like it,
absolutely face.

Speaker 4 (58:28):
It looks curtisized and Tyree's for skipping out of the
media after one of those Cavs games where he had
a stinker. And in my mind, I'm thinking, you know what,
I might have done the same thing.

Speaker 2 (58:39):
But you were all fired up for Notre Dame the
other day.

Speaker 5 (58:41):
You ready to go?

Speaker 1 (58:42):
Am I not fired up?

Speaker 7 (58:43):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (58:44):
You sound kind of like I'm not really buying it
right now?

Speaker 1 (58:48):
It goes okay, I'm extremely fire. I wasn't born into
a Catholics versus Convicts culture? Was that a little bit more?
I know that's more your age range, Jeff. That was
that as prevalent as everyone's.

Speaker 2 (59:01):
Yes, it was my favorite, was even before social media,
and it was huge.

Speaker 1 (59:05):
A tad overblown. I'm not going to go out and
say that Notre Dame had a bunch of choir boys
on those teams.

Speaker 4 (59:10):
ZO certainly not.

Speaker 5 (59:12):
My favorite thing from the Haliburton interview was he said
if they would have won the championship and he hadn't
torn his achilles, the plan was for him to come
out at SummerSlam with John Cena in full heel mode
with the Larry O'Brien trophy and walking out in front
of New York City. I'm like, that would have been epic.

Speaker 2 (59:29):
You might have lost your head, would have literally I would.

Speaker 5 (59:32):
I would have cheered for him, because he said that
he's like the amount of hate I would have gotten,
He's like, I would have soaked it all in. He
would have loved every second of it.

Speaker 2 (59:39):
All Right, We'll try to fire Kevin up a little
bit later on. In the meantime, let's check it down.

Speaker 9 (59:49):
It's one of the.

Speaker 2 (59:50):
Biggest college football games of the week coming up this weekend.
Notre Dame Miami.

Speaker 1 (59:53):
Correct, and I am extremely fired up, but trust me,
non Notre Dame people don't want to hear Notre Dame.
People will go any crazier than needs to be. People
hate Notre Dame enough.

Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
So you're just worried about protecting the brand. Is that
what it is?

Speaker 1 (01:00:07):
We have to protect the monogram. We have to stay independent,
all right?

Speaker 5 (01:00:11):
Pro foot holes when you need them.

Speaker 4 (01:00:13):
Yeah, get little Holtz out here, you would have some
things to say.

Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
Yes, Colts have made an initial fifty three man roster
with a couple of cut Yes, turning out a couple
of several cuts yesterday, but the most notable probably Juju Brince,
the local kid who was in his third season, recent
draft pick for the Annapolis Cults. He has gone. Jelani
Woods also has been waived. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:00:37):
I was just at Juju Brince's alma mater I believe
over Warren Central last week. So the Warren social product
now is on waivers and we'll see if a team
picks him up. Same for Jelannie Woods.

Speaker 2 (01:00:49):
As far as everything else is concerned on the roster,
there are a lot of defensive linemen a quarter of
the roster almost defensive line. I guess twenty percent of
the roster defensive line and Kevin any surprise there.

Speaker 1 (01:01:02):
Hey, Ballard loves his D line. Eleven to fifty three
seems like a lots even for Ballard. So again, as
the rosters gymnastics play out today, do we see that
number trim at all, especially six like defensive tackles? Like
it'd be one thing if they have like a project
defensive end. You know, there's oh this huge traitsy you know,
speed guy as a land in years past, but I

(01:01:22):
don't really even see that within that eleven man group here,
So that would definitely be something that I'll be keeping
an eye on as waiver claims get processed later.

Speaker 2 (01:01:30):
Today and as promised by you yesha, not really promised,
but predicted. Well, Mallory tied end not Jeelanni Woods.

Speaker 1 (01:01:38):
Yeah, to me, that was not a huge surprise at all.
I think that's how it was trending really throughout camp,
throughout the preseason game. So we'll see. Is this it
for Jelani Woods? Is this it for Juju Brents, you know?
Or do they cling to a practice squad here in
Indye or you know, do they look at their situations
and say, hey, if we don't get claim, we need
to restart our careers elsewhere. That's all we a big

(01:02:00):
part of what this week is all about once you
get through the cuts, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
The Indiana Fever with a big win last night over
at the field House ninety five seventy five over the
Seattle Storm of le At Boston twenty seven points, nine rebounds.
She's fourth in the league in field goal percentage. James Boyd,
she is tearing it up.

Speaker 10 (01:02:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
I believe a Leah Boston might've been right around the
top of the league or led the league in field
goal percentage as a rookie. So she's been great when
it comes to efficiency throughout her entire career and she
continues to get better.

Speaker 2 (01:02:26):
Kelsey Mitchell had twenty one points as well. Odyssey sim
twenty two, but Mitchell's twenty one points gives her seven
hundred and seventy for the year, a new single season
scoring record for the Indiana Fever, who are now in
the sixth spot in the WNBA. Top eight make the playoffs.
Top four get home court in the first round. They're
three and a half games behind Phoenix for that fourth spot.
Two up on LA now for the night, and they'll

(01:02:48):
play LA had to head on Friday night in Los Angeles.
That'll be all of a sudden, a big get yourself
in the playoffs game right there.

Speaker 4 (01:02:55):
Yeah, honestly, in my mind, the Fever are playing playoff
games at this point. You can't drop any more, you
can't afford to really lose any ground. So that mindset
is probably already there for this team. Now it's just
about seeing it through.

Speaker 2 (01:03:07):
For their last six on the road. Major League Baseball
Yesterday not a good day for anybody around here. The
Chicago Cubs lose in San Francisco last night five to two,
the Dodgers six, three winners over the Cincinnati Reds. Saint
Louis got beat up by Pittsburgh eight to three the
final score there, and the Chicago White Sox lose to
Kansas City five to four, And even the Indianapolis Indians

(01:03:29):
struggled yesterday. They lose it home to the Buffalo Bison's
five to four. But big news out of Victory Field
six thirty five tonight when those two teams play again, Kevin.

Speaker 1 (01:03:36):
You slide into first base, you do the hit and
ball trick, You pump up the crowd after every out,
all twenty seven outs. It's one Tjim McConnell night there
will he hop the first pitch. M McConnell's still a
first base.

Speaker 4 (01:03:51):
I trust that he will throw a nice first pitch,
no hop.

Speaker 2 (01:03:57):
I'd love to see that somebody strikes out on a
called the strike, the ball gets behind somebody and is
a perfect steal of first base. That's got TJ written.

Speaker 5 (01:04:04):
It all over.

Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
I like the hitting ball trick. I like maybe just
a small ball only moving runners over via buns tonight.

Speaker 6 (01:04:10):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
I guess the version of TJ McConnell's.

Speaker 4 (01:04:13):
I could see TJ also is running over the catcher
at home play one thousand percent.

Speaker 3 (01:04:18):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
And I would be remiss if I did not mention
the biggest story in the National footballerg yesterday. If you
are a pop culture nerd, Taylor Swift on our Instagram
posts a picture of herb getting engaged to Travis Kelsey.

Speaker 4 (01:04:33):
Yeah, love is in the air, and honestly, I was
a little bit surprised that it didn't get leaked. So
shout out to whoever kept under wraps for as long
as they did, and congrats to those two.

Speaker 5 (01:04:45):
It probably means you got good people in your circle.

Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
I would say, Yeah, a lot of money to pay
the ones who aren't in your circle to shut up.

Speaker 5 (01:04:51):
This was bank accounts magic.

Speaker 2 (01:04:54):
Yeah, Papa Kelsey was saying that the engagement actually happened
a couple of weeks ago, and they were actually engaged
when Taylor Switch was on the Kelsey's podcast.

Speaker 4 (01:05:03):
You know what I need, I need Jason Kelcey along
those lines, Jeff to be the efficient? Is that the word?
I need him to be the guy doing that. I
felt like he'd be great at that, honestly, and he
seem so happy for his brothers, so.

Speaker 5 (01:05:15):
It seems like genuine love.

Speaker 4 (01:05:17):
And so for those out there who are sick of
seeing Taylor Swift, you better hope Travis Kelsey retires after
this year. Otherwise you will see plenty of her this season.

Speaker 2 (01:05:24):
All right, anything else you guys want to throw in
before we had to break and get ready to talk
some fantasy football for the first time this year.

Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
See Chip Ganassi kind of put to rest the alex
Plow F one rumors yesterday and full expectation that he
will be back in the ten car there. So, I
don't you know, alex Plow and contracts has been an
issue before. I don't know if I'm ready to say
that's total gospel. But clearly Chip felt the need ahead
of Sunday season finale in Nashville to come out that

(01:05:50):
and Indy Car's coming out of the video game, which
I think is awesome. I'd argue that's one of the
best ways to connect to young fans.

Speaker 2 (01:05:57):
Are you there?

Speaker 1 (01:05:58):
You great a video game? If I started playing video
games right now, I think Maddie would leave me by
probably lunchtime.

Speaker 4 (01:06:04):
I want to say, the last time I played a
racing game, I'd have been Midnight Club. He is too,
he is two Yeah, Man Furst of Alago in that thing. Yeah,
I was rising.

Speaker 2 (01:06:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
Mario Kart like a college drinking game. We had to
finished a beer by the time he got through the
three laps of Mario.

Speaker 5 (01:06:23):
Kart Need for Speed. Another good one.

Speaker 2 (01:06:26):
I went through a face when my kids were younger,
I had to play a lot of five nights at Freddy's,
a lot of five nights at Fridday's.

Speaker 4 (01:06:32):
I have the googlest one.

Speaker 5 (01:06:34):
Yeah, I played that one.

Speaker 3 (01:06:36):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
They were fairly young at the time.

Speaker 5 (01:06:38):
This is the scariest looking thing ever. I was, what
is this?

Speaker 2 (01:06:43):
They're like eight, nine, ten years old? Right in there.

Speaker 4 (01:06:46):
Moody out during the commercial break, Google five Nights and
Friday's people and make sure the children aren't around jump scary.

Speaker 3 (01:06:53):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
Coming up at a moment, fantasy football advice from our
expert at CBS, Dave Richard. What do you say? Let's
give away two spots right now? Well, the text line
our fantasy league.

Speaker 5 (01:07:05):
How are we doing that?

Speaker 2 (01:07:06):
It's just text the word fantasy. You'll be eligible and
you can choose two of the of the lot to
get in over the next five minutes. How about that?

Speaker 5 (01:07:14):
Will you sign up for the fantasy league before Jeff record?

Speaker 1 (01:07:17):
Maybe looking that way?

Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
So I sign up before the draft?

Speaker 3 (01:07:20):
We're good.

Speaker 5 (01:07:21):
You've had like ten notifications.

Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
We determined though that most of those didn't go through though,
did we not?

Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
You?

Speaker 1 (01:07:29):
And I look hear that guy on you. That's your problem,
all right?

Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
Coming up in a moment, we'll talk fantasy football next
on ninety three five and one seven Fan. Do we
have two new players in the Fan Morning show Fantasy
Football League? Mark Dykeen? Is we get ready to talk
about this?

Speaker 3 (01:07:46):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (01:07:46):
Yeah, I have to get all their information. I just
have phone numbers to go off of, so I have
to parse through that while you guys do this.

Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
All right, Well, we will do this. Dave Richard is
a fantasy football expert at CBS kind enough to join
us here in the midst of what I can only
assume a very busy time for him, as we are
just week in a day away from the first NFL
football game of the season. Dave, thanks so much for
joining us on the Payless Liquors Hotline. How many leagues
do you think you'll be doing this year?

Speaker 9 (01:08:12):
The number is going to be about ten, and I
haven't drafted most of them yet. I just figured out
why I was waiting to talk to you guys. I
have five drafts in the next six days, and.

Speaker 8 (01:08:22):
The one day when I don't have a fantasy.

Speaker 9 (01:08:23):
Draft is when I go to hard Rock Stadium to
see the Miami Hurricanes take on the Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (01:08:29):
Oh boy, here we go.

Speaker 9 (01:08:31):
I know that that's going to be a topic of
discussion at some point.

Speaker 8 (01:08:34):
Maybe we don't go deep.

Speaker 9 (01:08:35):
Into that, but uh, you know, as the Hurricanes alum,
I just had to bring it up that I think
Arcanes are going to give the Irish games.

Speaker 2 (01:08:47):
Yes, we are not the same team.

Speaker 9 (01:08:53):
The Hurricanes are not the same team as they were
last year, much better defense. Obviously a quarterback change, but
from you know, I talk to people who watch practice
and sounds like Carson Beck is his old self and
that could be a problem for the Irish.

Speaker 2 (01:09:08):
Kevin just.

Speaker 4 (01:09:11):
Yeah, you know what, Dave, keep talking that talk, because
this guy the studio with.

Speaker 1 (01:09:18):
Dave given that, are you surprised that Vegas has the
line where it is Notre Dame favor on the road
with a starter that's played four snaps In college football.

Speaker 9 (01:09:26):
Public perception is king, and the way that it works
in Vegas is that whatever the public thinks is what
they want to try and bank on.

Speaker 8 (01:09:33):
And it almost tells me that they think that a
lot of money.

Speaker 9 (01:09:37):
Is going to come in on Notre Dame, and it
probably will, and so they they probably think it's going
to be a lot closer and maybe goes down to
the wire.

Speaker 8 (01:09:44):
And when it's a.

Speaker 9 (01:09:45):
Game like that, of course there's a chance that the
underdog can win. So you know, they're probably looking to
get like sixty forty fifty to fifty. They do that
on a lot of games, but sometimes they want to
have the line a little bit funky and to give
themselves just a bit of an edge. I think this
could be one of those games.

Speaker 2 (01:10:02):
All right, let's talk some fantasy football day. That's why
you're here. So I have a couple I have a question,
really kind of a two part question, which I'm not
a fan of, but I've got to ask it this way. Sure,
as fantasy football philosophies evolve, you know, with zero running back,
where you wait until you get your first running back,
until you've filled up all your top receiving spots, that
seems to be out of favor. Now, what's the best

(01:10:23):
general philosophy moving forward these days?

Speaker 9 (01:10:26):
So I still think getting at least one really good
running back is a really good idea. But it does
depend on how big your league is. What do catches
count for? How many receivers do you start? The real
key for me, and I don't mean to kind of
change the direction of your question, is how you feel
about the receivers at the top of.

Speaker 8 (01:10:46):
The draft board.

Speaker 9 (01:10:47):
How many receivers when you look at a rankings list,
how many wide receivers do you look at and you go, oh, yeah,
that's a stud. I would start that guy every week,
no questions asked, and I would expect somewhere around like
seventeen to twenty PPR points from that receiver, and for me,
that answer is like nine. There's like nine receivers that

(01:11:08):
are like that, and so I want to try and
get as many of those guys as I can without
necessarily having to give up the chance of getting one
of the elite running backs that are at the beginning
of a fantasy draft. So you kind of have to
make the decision about how badly you want or need
one or two of those nine wide receivers. And maybe
for you it's not nine. Maybe the number for you

(01:11:28):
is seven. And however that number is if it's small,
you need to take the receiver, even if it means
passing up on the John Robinson, a Saquon Barkley, a
Jamier gives.

Speaker 8 (01:11:38):
You got to go that route because the receivers that
you'll see later on, you'll go.

Speaker 9 (01:11:42):
Okay, you know, demonte Adams is good, but he's old
and I don't know if I could expect him to
get seventeen points per game. Tyreek Hill was good, He's
stunk last year and he's kind of old, and I
don't know where he's head at.

Speaker 8 (01:11:53):
And we could go on and on with receivers.

Speaker 9 (01:11:56):
I think that That's really the crux of what your
draft strategy. Before you walk into draft, find out how
many receivers you really love, and then try to get
as many of those guys as you can.

Speaker 4 (01:12:06):
Again, we have Dave Richard joining us. He covers fantasy
football in the NFL Draft at CBS Sports. Dave, when
you look at the Colts's quarterback change, going from Anthony
Richardson to Daniel Jones's QB one, how do you think
that affects their receivers, both, I guess in real life,
but also in fantasy which that we're talking to you about,

(01:12:27):
Like do you feel like some players have been pushed
stock up and others have been pushed stock down? You know,
let us know it's.

Speaker 9 (01:12:33):
Not gonna be by a lot, but yeah, it's up
a little bit because we're talking about a quarterback. Not
that Daniel Jones has set the world on fire, but
he's he does have a higher completion rate over his
career than Anthony Richardson does, and I mean most quarterbacks do.

Speaker 8 (01:12:50):
It's just the way that.

Speaker 9 (01:12:50):
Anthony Richardson's career has worked out.

Speaker 8 (01:12:52):
So far, and so I think it does give.

Speaker 9 (01:12:54):
A little bit of a boost to Josh downs to
Michael Pittman, to Tyler Warren, who I am a huge
fan of, and I actually think it gives a boost
to Jonathan Taylor as well, because now Taylor won't have
quite the same type of competition for touchdowns at the
goal line. When Anthony Richardson is back there. What a
nightmare for defenses because they could run an RPO and

(01:13:15):
it could go to Taylor, could go to Richardson, Richardson
could throw it.

Speaker 8 (01:13:18):
Like there were a number of different ways to go.

Speaker 9 (01:13:20):
And yeah, they could still do that with Daniel Jones,
but it's not quite as threatening and it helps john
and Taylor kind of boost his upside for touchdowns. Maybe
he scores fourteen this year after having I believe twelve
last year, and so I think you feel a little
bit better about those receivers. I don't know if it
means that you actually go out and target any of
those guys before round seven, for example, but you'll know

(01:13:43):
that all right. Daniel Jones seems like he has a
long leash, looks like he'll be the Colts quarterback. You
can feel good about Pittman. Maybe five catches a game down,
same thing once he's healthy. Warren I mean, you can
tell me you've watched all the practices.

Speaker 8 (01:13:56):
I loved him at college, and I think.

Speaker 9 (01:13:58):
He's a great fit for what the Colts really.

Speaker 8 (01:14:00):
Want to do and need to do.

Speaker 9 (01:14:02):
As far as the middle of the field goes and
finding those one on one matchups. I could see him
getting four or five catches per game as well.

Speaker 1 (01:14:08):
And that's Dave Richard from CBS Fantasy expertis with U
Seere on the Paylosslookers Hotline, Dave rookies that we like.
I had a draft the other night, and I feel like,
all of a sudden, you start looking on the old Oh,
these are the next best available, and when the rookie
names pop up, you're always kind of like, huh, I
guess I remember that dude from college, But I have
no idea his NFL fit. So maybe a rookie at

(01:14:30):
running back, maybe a rookie at wide out.

Speaker 9 (01:14:32):
To keep an eye on Okay so Omar and Hampton
as a chance to be potentially as good as Ashton
genty and you can get him a full round later.
And everybody knows about gent because he's had so much
hype and you know, tried to break Barry Sanders record
at Boys and State and all that stuff. At a
Marion Hampton, it's a good three down back, and he
landed in a great scheme for running backs with the

(01:14:54):
LA Chargers, with the team that wants to run the football.
It's a team that clearly notices good and running back
talent and will lean on that running back. So I
don't think he's going to lose too many touches to
Najie Harris, and I'm excited about getting him. I think
a round three pick is fine, but if you really
really wanted him in late round two, I think you
could take Omaran Hampton at receiver. I keep hearing from

(01:15:16):
my friends about how good Matthew Golden looks in Green Bay.
And I know we're not used to the Packers having
a bona fide number one wide receiver, but the way
that Golden finished his career at Texas, it sounds like
that's the dude that the Packers got and the number
one receiver that can stretch defenses, earn a big target share,
be the number one target getter in Green Bay. And
that's the Packers' offense that was forced to run a

(01:15:38):
lot last year. Now I think they're going to be
able to throw a lot more because Jordan Love is
healthy aside from his left thumb issue. I definitely think
that there's a chance that we could see Matthew Golden
play very well. He's probably maybe like my second or
third favorite rookie wide receiver. But I like the draft
value better than I do for Travis Hunter and for
tedor Roy McMillan. And then at tight end it's Tyler Warren.

(01:16:00):
Just the after catch ability that he has the power
and strength scenes to have translated to the NFL after
what he did at Penn State, and again I think
he could be penciled in for four or five catches
a game.

Speaker 5 (01:16:11):
Dave, this is Mark. I got a question for you.
I had to draft the other day. Christianer McCaffrey was
staring me right in the face, and I passed on
him because of just the injuries that he's had the
last couple of years. Am I Am I in the
minority there? Or is there concern with Christian McCaffrey just
giving the hout he's getting older, he's had injuries. Sure,
what's the plan with him?

Speaker 9 (01:16:29):
So? Mark, you've got CMC PTSD and that's from him
that about half the people in fantasy football has because
about half the people in fantasy football have had Christian
McCaffrey and then lost him to an injury. It's happened
three times now over the last five years. It's kind
of a problem when you think about it, but he's
if you know that he's healthy and you know that

(01:16:50):
the forty nine Ers offenses kind of stand on talent
outside of McCaffrey, Kittle, Ricky Piersoll's a breakout wide receiver.
I really like him a lot too. His game is
great when they're missing so many other guys like i
UK and Juwan Jennings, and you can't help but think
that McCaffrey's going to get more work. And McCaffrey has
potential to be just as good as a fantasy quarterback

(01:17:13):
when he's playing running back, especially if those sketches count.
So I don't mind taking the chance on Christian McCaffrey.
It means spending a later pick on Brian Robinson, who's
the backup running back in Saffrancisco. You want to lock
up that back and do what you can't to have
a piece of that forty nine Ers run game because
usually it's really good but there's no concern about McCaffrey
having another injury based on anything other than history, and

(01:17:38):
that's a bad way to draft. I just think that
if he was a little banged up now and you know,
nursing a hamstring injury or something like that, then sure
we could head.

Speaker 8 (01:17:47):
For the hills.

Speaker 9 (01:17:47):
But other than that, like he's ready to go, sounds
like he's got enough gas in the tank for one
more huge season. I would take him in the first round.

Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
Dave Richard CBS any Miami to Notre Dame parting shot
before we let you go?

Speaker 9 (01:18:00):
No, not at all, because you know I'm gonna be
on the air again someday and I don't want you
guys to remember. Just in cage, Notre Dame crushes the Canes.
I think it will be a great game. It's always
a great atmosphere. The rivalry has been.

Speaker 8 (01:18:11):
Huge for a long time, and uh, let's go Canes.

Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
I think we're just gonna get you and Steven Holder
from ESPN, who's also Miami guy, and Kevin you'll just
invide him over watch the game. You'll have cupcakes and milk.

Speaker 1 (01:18:23):
Just sink baasa unbelievable fantasy info. Uh, but man, he
can kiss my ass when it comes to somebody.

Speaker 2 (01:18:31):
There we go. We bullet you into it.

Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
Kevin.

Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
There you go, Dave, thank you for the time.

Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
You got it, guys. Good luck on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (01:18:39):
There you go, thank you.

Speaker 4 (01:18:42):
Yeah, I'm very happy, you know me. You know, I
wake up and.

Speaker 1 (01:18:45):
I got to see Stephen every day. I don't have
to see Dave Richard maybe every man.

Speaker 5 (01:18:48):
That's the best part about it.

Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
You gotta start, and that's how you do it.

Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
You just hide behind the mic exactly.

Speaker 4 (01:18:53):
But no, you just got to come in with some
shades on if your team doesn't do exactly as well
as you want.

Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
That's some great fantasy info.

Speaker 4 (01:19:01):
It was, and I keep forgetting the game is Sunday.
That fund a unique setup.

Speaker 1 (01:19:05):
Belichick Monday, right, the Belichick abuse Monday.

Speaker 2 (01:19:09):
We will tell everybody what is the latest as far
as entries into our fantasy football league coming up in
a moment here is Mark's been working furiously on that.
During the interview. We'll do it next at ninety five. Well,
we finally got Kevin Bown all fired up for Notre
Dame Miami. I like that you put in another microphone
back together over there. That one fall up.

Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
Tighten the screws right now. I am all tight and
ready to go on Sunday night.

Speaker 2 (01:19:34):
How confident are you in having a brand new quarterback
and some of the roster turnover from a really great
team last year.

Speaker 1 (01:19:41):
Yeah, it worries me. That environment four snaps total and
today's college football you don't usually get that. You know,
Notre Dames lived in the portal, so that is of concern. Yeah,
new defensive coordinator, some kicker issues, but they do. I
think I have a lot of sure things elsewhere. But yeah,
hearing Dave Richard talk like signaty on college game day

(01:20:01):
before Notre Dame played, I you made me feel a
little better.

Speaker 2 (01:20:03):
All right. Everything I've read, seen, guys I've talked to,
this is they and everybody says you better.

Speaker 1 (01:20:11):
Than Miami last year.

Speaker 5 (01:20:14):
That last year. Yeah, I got the calendar.

Speaker 2 (01:20:17):
Here comes to talk.

Speaker 3 (01:20:18):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:20:18):
It's full throated now. But everything he's reloading with incredible
talent is every everybody I've talked to and seen and
read says Marcus Freeman is loading it up.

Speaker 1 (01:20:28):
I like Notre Dame to be a playoff team, full throated.
Did you hear that?

Speaker 4 (01:20:31):
Mm hmm, Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
That means yelling by the way, Yeah, well, yeah darn right,
it does well unless you're James Boyd full throated Nah,
I'm not the one making those remarks.

Speaker 1 (01:20:44):
A text here, I feel like comfy seat Ballard would
have kept Juju Brent James boy do you view this
as a I'm on the hot seat? He can't be
banking on off injured dudes.

Speaker 4 (01:20:58):
Maybe, but at the end of the day, he played
eleven games in two years, So whether he was on
the hot seat or not, you're coming down to choosing
a roster's power for a guy you just cannot rely
on and stay healthy. And similar to Anthony, he couldn't
make it to the preseason healthy. I think maybe his
prospects look a little differently if he had just been

(01:21:18):
available for the entire training camp in all the preseason,
but he wasn't. So again, Anthony obviously is a much
bigger decision as far as his future goes. But I
don't blame them for moving on from jujus.

Speaker 1 (01:21:30):
An undrafted free agent over him. Could you have tried
to keep Brents and slid the undrafted guy to the
practice squad? Could you try to do both obviously not
rely on Brnce to be a starter, be the sixth
corner for you and see out more of the rookie contract.
It is only year three for him. Juju Brents, for
what it's worth, thought he was a great scheme fit

(01:21:52):
for Louis Arumo.

Speaker 4 (01:21:56):
I think the injuries is just just did a man
and at some point you want to move on from that.
And perhaps that is a bit of pressure that he's feeling.
But like I said, when you're hurt all the time,
it's hard to you know, want to keep you over anybody.
Quite frankly, it doesn't matter where you're drafted if you're
not available to play.

Speaker 2 (01:22:15):
Availability. They always talk about that being a big available,
big ability mark. We have a couple more spots for
We have two more left to award. Will do that
one tomorrow and one on Friday. Then we have the
draft next week. Yeah, I like a plane.

Speaker 5 (01:22:27):
Uh huh. The plan at this point is to see
how many people can sign up before Jeff gets in there.

Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
I'm just gonna do I'm gonna wait till the right
before the draft.

Speaker 5 (01:22:34):
At this point, we're gonna get kicked out.

Speaker 4 (01:22:35):
I was going to say, going to get backed out
is going to go terribly.

Speaker 5 (01:22:40):
My login, I forgot my credentials. Oh geez, do we
have any prize Spencer Schrader, wait, any prize for the winner.
I think we're working on it. I think we can.

Speaker 1 (01:22:50):
I think cool.

Speaker 5 (01:22:51):
We've given stuff out before. I think Cluster Truck has
stepped up in the past, or Big Lug and all that.
So I think we can figure something out.

Speaker 1 (01:22:58):
Marks just naming brands out loud, putting their putt, put.

Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
The noisy ross, put their feet by. I was gonna say,
toys on time.

Speaker 2 (01:23:07):
Coming is what you're thinking of.

Speaker 5 (01:23:08):
Cracker Barrel. You need some good pub these days. Why
don't you sponsor the fantasy draft? Get your asses in here.

Speaker 1 (01:23:15):
I can get behind a cracker barrel, get the garden.

Speaker 2 (01:23:17):
We'll do the entire draft and rocking chairs.

Speaker 1 (01:23:19):
What do you guys say, Yeah, you can play checkers
in between.

Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (01:23:22):
The pin game too.

Speaker 9 (01:23:24):
They have.

Speaker 1 (01:23:25):
At the store. It always frustrates me.

Speaker 2 (01:23:29):
Coming up in a moment, we'll talk more. Notre Dame football, Kevin,
you're ready to go. Pete Sampson from the Athletic Kevin's
personal therapist stops by next ninety three five and one
O seven. You're moving James Boyd with that music. I'll

(01:24:03):
tell you that right now.

Speaker 4 (01:24:05):
Yeah, I feel so triumphant right now. It's like that
Heaven's gates have opened. Notre Dame has won Sunday Nights. Kevin,
it's all happening.

Speaker 1 (01:24:15):
He's definitely moving me below the waist in between the
legs right now. Thank you Mark Dyketon for that.

Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
He's made man both of y'all.

Speaker 5 (01:24:24):
You just made Mark both of them them guys.

Speaker 1 (01:24:27):
Yeah, I think I'm saying, why you want me not
to paint some vivid imagery? No, I don't want you
to pay anything. No, no, well I'll just turn my
mic off.

Speaker 9 (01:24:37):
Then.

Speaker 2 (01:24:37):
Welcome into our next guest, Pete Sampson from The Athletic.
He covers Notre Dame football and Pete, all I can
tell you is Kevin Bowen is excited to speak with
you about Golden Dume football.

Speaker 6 (01:24:48):
Yeah, it's a little a little early for some of
the imagery we've got.

Speaker 1 (01:24:52):
That's what I'm trying to tell him. Pete. I I apologize,
but you know I was trying to resemble maybe some
of your vivid imagery. As a writer, you do tremendous
job so thank you for the content. I don't know
if that's the smoothest transition that I've ever tried for,
but nonetheless, here we are.

Speaker 6 (01:25:07):
What are your late?

Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Well, actually, let's go here because we're fresh off a
quarterback battle in our market with the Indianapolis Colts, and
I think largely that quarterback battle went. I don't know,
I don't think there's anything too too shocking, whereas as
I observed the Notre Dame quarterback battle from Afar, it
sounded like a bit like a roller coaster. Could you
maybe describe it for our audience? It hasn't been glued

(01:25:29):
to the athletic Yeah, it was.

Speaker 6 (01:25:32):
Because I think it started where CJ.

Speaker 10 (01:25:34):
Carr felt like the inevitable winner of it, and then
as camp unfolded, you're talking to people who are practicing, like.

Speaker 6 (01:25:41):
Actually, Kenny Minchi's been really good, and then you just
kept hearing that, kept hearing that, kept hearing that.

Speaker 10 (01:25:47):
So it was almost like the expect the guy who
won it, you expected to win it anyway, but how
he got there was a surprise. So you know, what,
do they have both ready on Sunday night at Miami?
I think they absolutely do you know they're they're hopeful
that Carr will be able to answer the call and
you know, handle the environment and all that stuff. But
I think you gotta be you gotta be ready with

(01:26:09):
both we are.

Speaker 2 (01:26:10):
They all on special teams this year.

Speaker 10 (01:26:14):
Uh, not as good as they were last year because
they kind of threw a perfect game for pretty much
all season. Uh, you know, they lose Mitch Jeter, the
kicker who at the game winning kind of walk off
against Penn State, you know, was huge against A and
M earlier in the year. So Noah Burnett's a transfer
kicker they have coming in. I think what I'm mostly
sort of see and social teams is they're gonna stick

(01:26:36):
Jeremiah Love at kickoff return and that that would get
you out of your seat if you're a notre name
fan to watch.

Speaker 6 (01:26:43):
So that's probably the most interesting thing to me on
special teams, is Jeremiah Love back there.

Speaker 4 (01:26:48):
So along those lines, Pete, we know that Jeremiah Love
is coming in with a lot of hype and deservedly so.
He's been a great player for the Fighting Irish. But
you had a piece recently in the Athletic kind of
going inside the mind of him. Great piece by the way, Yeah,
you know, and I guess that's the unbiased opinion of
my colleague there, Kevin Bone. But here it's a great

(01:27:08):
piece to kind of go on depth and what kind
of makes him who he is and how much do
you think he cares about the Heisman, but more so
just for what that will present from a team standpoint,
because obviously being in that conversation, you got to be winning.

Speaker 6 (01:27:23):
Yeah, I mean he cares about it on an individual level.

Speaker 3 (01:27:26):
You know.

Speaker 6 (01:27:26):
That's I don't think he's going to come out and
tell you that, but you talk to.

Speaker 10 (01:27:30):
People that know him, and yeah, he cares about it
a lot it, you know, but notre Name's going to
have to go what eleven and one for him to
win the Heisman at a minimum, And I think at
how his Heisman campaign, you know, does he get off
the ground Sunday night or not. I think it's gonna
have to be kind of more highlight driven than stat driven,

(01:27:51):
if that makes sense, Like he's.

Speaker 6 (01:27:52):
Going to have to have a bunch of wild plays
and considering he can hurtle over you or run through
you or run around you, like he's very capable of it.
But yeah, he's I don't think people like I think people.

Speaker 10 (01:28:05):
Nationally are caught onto him based on the playoff, but
I don't think people understand just how athletic and talented
he is. I mean he is he could start on
any team in the country anywhere, almost at any time,
Like he is a absolutely freak athlete.

Speaker 1 (01:28:19):
Again, Pete Sampson with us here the Pride of DePaul,
a DePaul product. There some rudy and interest comeing on
Bell season does great work covering the fighting irish for
the athletic One of the other pieces I enjoyed from
it here recently, Pete, was you know, you basically described
Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman right now as a durable
national title contender, And I think I probably speak for

(01:28:42):
a lot of sports fans. What you want out of
your team is how do you have a five, I
don't know, seven year window where you feel like, annually
your team can be one of the last one standing.
Obviously very difficult to achieve. I think in some ways
it's become harder in college sports to maybe get there,
just with how much trosters turnover year in a year out.

(01:29:03):
But in what ways do you feel like Notre Dame
has become a little bit more of a you know,
constant team up their top five, top ten in recent
years because it wasn't that really for you know, a
better part of the two thousands.

Speaker 6 (01:29:15):
Yeah, I think that they've done a good job of
getting the foundation right.

Speaker 10 (01:29:19):
And you know, everyone uses the word alignment in college football,
like Brian Kelly used it at LSU was the reason
they left Notre Dame, and I think he was in
some ways right, Like I don't think Notre Name was
aligned the way that it needed to be, and from
the trustees to the president, to the ad to the
head coach, I think even to like the campus like
this is a complicated place with admissions and residentiality stuff.

(01:29:42):
Like I think everyone at not everyone, but more people
inside Notre Dame understand that when Notreame football is good,
like the University of Notre Dame is winning too, And
that's not always been the case, but you know, the
taste of it last season. You know, Marcus Freeman is
somebody that's pretty easy to support around here.

Speaker 6 (01:30:01):
That helps.

Speaker 10 (01:30:02):
But I think even at the highest level they looked
at it and be like, we want to go for this,
Like let's not apologize for trying to be great at
football and having a high end academic experience, so that
it took a while for Notdame to get there.

Speaker 6 (01:30:16):
But I do think this is as all in on
football as Not Dame has been since I've started covering
the team.

Speaker 2 (01:30:21):
Curious question, A little bit of a different some changes
along the offensive line after some transfers out, Believe it
or not, but it was a strength and always is
a strength the offensive line seems to be for Notre Dame.
What's it look like right now?

Speaker 6 (01:30:34):
I mean a lot better than it was last year.

Speaker 10 (01:30:36):
They I mean they went to A and M with
six career starts and their starting offensive line.

Speaker 6 (01:30:40):
You know, both their tackles are back.

Speaker 3 (01:30:41):
They're good.

Speaker 10 (01:30:43):
You know, their center returns. He's the Indiana guy, ash
and Craig, he's back from an ACL. Billy Shrauss is
the left guard.

Speaker 6 (01:30:50):
You know, he's a captain. So they have four starters
back last year they had essentially one and a half.

Speaker 9 (01:30:56):
And then you know the.

Speaker 6 (01:30:57):
Question is their right guard Gerby Lambert. He wins that job.

Speaker 10 (01:31:01):
He's a sophomore six seven, three twenty looks like a
you know, power forward, you know center on a basketball court,
like very athletic, huge guy.

Speaker 6 (01:31:11):
So they should be good.

Speaker 10 (01:31:14):
You know, this should be a really good offensive and
then it needs to be good because I think that
last year they kind of were bailed out by Riley
Leonards Legs a little bit if they gave up pressure
or CJ. Carr, Kenny Mitchee. They're not as escapable. So
Line's got to take a step forward.

Speaker 6 (01:31:28):
They have the material to do it.

Speaker 4 (01:31:30):
Pete, this is more of a selfish question because I
covered him when he was in high school at En
Drayan up in Northwest Indiana. Drake Bowen named the team captain.
How do you view his upcoming season and what could
be the jump that he takes because I saw this kid,
I mean when we played to a football it was
like good luck. And now I'm seeing him, you know,
show up on the bigger stages, obviously coming off that

(01:31:52):
national championship run last year.

Speaker 10 (01:31:55):
Yeah, I think it is kind of classic Notre Dame
middle linebacker of the last you know, thirty years or so,
Like it's you know J. D. Bertrand's with the Falcons,
Jack Kaiser Indiana guys with the Jaguars. Now like Bowen's
like those guys you know, is he get a freak
athlete who's going to cover Jeremiah Love out of the
backfield every down? Probably not, but knowing where to be

(01:32:16):
when to be there, filling gaps like getting everyone aligned.
Like he's just he's kind of a throwback linebacker. And yeah,
I think he is in line for a very very
good season.

Speaker 2 (01:32:26):
Well, any words to pump Kevin Bowing up and get
all fired up for Miami before we move on today.

Speaker 1 (01:32:32):
Pete's just as long as the athletic subscriptions paid for
from a different Bowing account, that's all that matters with you.
I just got to get this creepy Indian Indian interview
to preview the Nerdame season every year.

Speaker 10 (01:32:43):
Yeah, as long as you know it's not twenty seventeen again,
there's no turnover chain. I don't think that the atmosphere
at Miami is going to be as like knock you
back on your heels as it was.

Speaker 6 (01:32:55):
I think it will be loud and it will be intense.

Speaker 10 (01:32:58):
But I think Notre Name is built much better than
the last time they went down there to play Miami,
And like it's just a manner of like hey, car
Let's hand the ball off the four. Let's take the
easy you know, completions to Reardon or you know, the
other receivers they've got. So if they can get the
quarterback just to play like a B minus game, I
think that.

Speaker 3 (01:33:16):
They will win.

Speaker 6 (01:33:17):
But you know, I've seen quarterbacks go down there and
not quite hit B minus.

Speaker 1 (01:33:21):
Did I see you're still looking for Catholics versus convicts
attendees for a potential story?

Speaker 6 (01:33:25):
Did I see that I have found enough?

Speaker 10 (01:33:28):
It's been hilarious to to tract on people who went
to the game down there in eighty nine, because that's
sort of what ended the series way back when some
of them, like were seven years old when they were there,
and I think they got they heard some words they'd
never heard before, maybe had some drinks thrown at them
they've ever had thrown at them before. You know, kind
of a traumatic experience, I think for some NOTEME fans

(01:33:49):
back in the day.

Speaker 4 (01:33:50):
So, Pete, I do want to kind of go back
to CJ.

Speaker 8 (01:33:53):
Carr.

Speaker 4 (01:33:54):
There is a lot of pressure on him obviously to perform.
So how do you think he has prepared him himself
as best as he can before he's really thrown into
that fire. Because I don't know how much you can
prepare four snaps of Purdue last year. Are you saying
that that didn't prep him? I mean Purdue football last
year was you know, not exactly riveting stuff to say

(01:34:14):
the least. But with CJ, carry on all seriousness. You know,
he's replacing a guy and Ryan Leonard who is now
here with the Colts, who you know, did a great job.
He helped him get to the biggest age of the sport,
and now you got to fill that guy's shoes.

Speaker 10 (01:34:27):
Yeah, it's tough because the offense is going to change.
He doesn't move like Leonard moves. He throws a much
better ball. I think the thing with Carr is like,
how do you make the game plan not revolver around
the quarterback, which is hard to do for a coach
because quarterback just makes everything happen.

Speaker 6 (01:34:46):
But like you got love, you got a good.

Speaker 10 (01:34:48):
Receiver group, really good tight end, multiple backs, good offensive line,
Like just keep it as simple as possible. And it's like,
maybe you have to not check out us some plays
that you run into some bad look that's fine. Just
like if you don't make the catastrophic mistake at quarterback
in cars first start. I think it'll be okay, but

(01:35:09):
you know he is kind of more of a gun
slinging quarterback, like he wants to take some chances. So like,
how does notary balance Like, Okay, let's be aggressive, but
not too aggressive. That's a that's a tough.

Speaker 6 (01:35:18):
Line to walk, uh in a pretty tough environment.

Speaker 2 (01:35:22):
Biggest notable thing is no no Northern Illinois on the
schedule this year, right yeah.

Speaker 10 (01:35:27):
I mean they finally got out of playing Max schools.
It wasn't working out for them, so you know, some
people will accuse them of ducking the MAC. I think
that's probably unfair, but you know it's uh, you know,
get get the let's get a little more sec power
for conference opponents on there, makes it more interesting for everybody.

Speaker 2 (01:35:43):
Always good to talk to you, Pete. Thanks so much
for stopping by anytime.

Speaker 3 (01:35:48):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
I saw the little rye grin on your face and
I brought up Northern Illinois.

Speaker 1 (01:35:53):
Great writer, Pete Sampson. Good dude, I love him.

Speaker 4 (01:35:57):
My sister is a Northern Illinois alone by the way,
and uh, she knows nothing about football, but she texted
me that day and was like, is this a big deal?

Speaker 2 (01:36:06):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (01:36:06):
Absolutely?

Speaker 1 (01:36:07):
Every time I see that hammock. Dude, the coach coach
just pains me just paying and I mean like it's
it's such a great story.

Speaker 5 (01:36:15):
I mean, so he bounce back though, I mean he
made all the ways to the name.

Speaker 1 (01:36:18):
I know, man, But I'll never forget Leonard's interception on
that day. What a horrific throw that hold that against him? Still,
who's uh probably.

Speaker 4 (01:36:26):
About say you can see him in a couple of
hours now, you know again, get that you got to
run from nothing.

Speaker 2 (01:36:31):
You could get that all cleared up with a quick
Notre Dame.

Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
But yeah, so I think their quarterback situation from a
throwing standpoint will change. I think there are a lot
of times last year, especially in the playoffs, where Notre
Dame treated Riley Leonard like remember how the Colts treated
Carson Wentz late in the twenty twenty one season. You
know what, names like, dude, you're not throwing a consequential
ball at all. And so you know, maybe we can
go down the Leonard out a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:36:55):
We're surprised he threw a couple of really nice footballs
in that last preseason.

Speaker 1 (01:36:58):
Get very night. Sure, But again that's probably important to
keep it into context of who the opponent was all right.

Speaker 4 (01:37:07):
Yeah, their allergic to defense in Cincinnati and.

Speaker 1 (01:37:10):
Their third and four stringers. But some very nice balls
from Riley Lander.

Speaker 2 (01:37:13):
But that was that's what I was looking for, Like
is the ball on time? Yeah, I mean weird.

Speaker 1 (01:37:17):
The throwt of Treadwell was as good to a throw
as you'll see. And that's honestly, I think I said
this when he was drafted. There's a little bit of like, wait.
At times Notre Dame fans were like, he's the white
Anthony Richardson, great runner. At times he'll throw the deep
ball and you're like, damn, there's a lot there. But
then some of the missing you know, you go back
to that National title game, part of Notre Dame digging

(01:37:38):
themselves an early hole. Leonard remember, ran his heart out
on that opening drive. I mean it was one of
the more impressive physical efforts you've seen fourth down conversion
at fourth down conversion. HELLI pukes after the drive and
then maybe honestly that impacted him the next couple drives
because then he just had some big, big misses on
the next couple of drives. Notre Dame defense is on

(01:38:00):
the field way too much. Next thing, you know, you're
digging out of a huge hole. And then again second half,
like Richardson, he gets into a two minute offense and
he's slinging it all over the field and Notre Dame's
getting back in that game. So it's really interesting how
similar those two players are.

Speaker 2 (01:38:16):
In my mind, it's Fan Morning Show ninety three five
one or seventy five Fan later on today, Chris Ballard
going to be meeting with the media just before one o'clock.

Speaker 4 (01:38:24):
What's the one thing you really want to know about James?
What is the plan for Anthony Richardson? No one can
answer that question. They just say, oh, he's the backup,
he's one play away. I don't care about one play away.
What is his future with this franchise When you drafted
him fourth overall two years ago and he is the
highest drafted player, says Andrew Luck. You gotta have a

(01:38:45):
plan for that guy, and if you don't, well maybe
you all should not be in the positions that you're in.
Just to talk.

Speaker 1 (01:38:52):
Could be the last ever Chris Bodd press conference. It
could be.

Speaker 5 (01:38:56):
Honestly, I'll be late to that party. I feel like
we've said that for how many years now, When he's
always back.

Speaker 4 (01:39:02):
Keep in mind there's a change in ownership. And you know,
I'm not saying this, uh jokingly, but I say this
with I think common sense. I don't think any owner,
whether they're family members or not, loved Chris Ballard, like
Jim irsay, loved Chris Ballard. And that is a factor
I think that we have to consider. When Jim irsay,

(01:39:23):
you know, rest in Peace is no longer here, I think.

Speaker 2 (01:39:25):
Specifically I want to hear him talking about how they've
completely remade that secondary in the last six months and
even in the last several weeks, and it's not gotten
any younger. Does that indicate I mean, they're always going
to say that they're in win now mode, but it's
just very un Chris Ballard, like all these moves, and

(01:39:46):
I'm just curious specifically how much input has Lelen Romo
had on that.

Speaker 1 (01:39:50):
Yeah, I mean, I think honestly, it's a I think
it is a compliment to Chris Ballard in that he
has attributed as much attention as he has to a
position group that I think was a huge reason why
the Colts did not make the postseason last year. I
think too many times there's been a little bit rusting
on your laurels content meant, hey, guys are going to

(01:40:12):
grow in the system, et cetera, et cetera, whereas this
year at corner it was just an absolute one point eighty. Again,
some of these guys are getting up there in age.
I think you have to acknowledge that. But he has
added two former All pros, two former third round picks.
And then we'll see about Mike Hilton, which James had
that report yesterday, the veteran corner. He's got probably what

(01:40:34):
fifty sixty starts in the NFL, him fifty six. There
you go, fifty six to him coming in for a
workout today. So I again, in the nine years of
Chris Ballard, I cannot recall one position group he has
ever had this much attention to, and it not being
a group that you've just simply said all of the

(01:40:56):
guys from last year are gone, like Kenny Moore still here,
Jalen Jones still here. We'll see how the practice squad
plays out for a few other guys. So definitely, I
I that is a position group that they've invested a
ton in, and I think rightfully so. And I'm sure
Lou Anrumo's presence has something to do with it.

Speaker 3 (01:41:14):
All.

Speaker 2 (01:41:14):
Right, let's check things down, Mark, let everybody know what's
going on in the world.

Speaker 1 (01:41:18):
For thirty five snap hold, kick is up, The kick
is good.

Speaker 2 (01:41:24):
Good, you takes the lead.

Speaker 4 (01:41:29):
Sorry, Kevin about to say, if he punches you right now,
I would not be surprised.

Speaker 5 (01:41:35):
Sorry, Sometimes there's that guy might.

Speaker 2 (01:41:38):
Have to look the other way in a moment here
and just whatever.

Speaker 5 (01:41:40):
I don't want to see. There's gonna be some fires
and moving up in hill trying to get him fired
up for Sunday.

Speaker 1 (01:41:45):
I mean, you know, we got a lot of Marx
teams playing for the actual championship events in their respective sport,
right Mark, you know it. Yeah, that's happened a lot
with the Bears lately, Cubs lately.

Speaker 2 (01:41:58):
Indianapolis Colts released their fifty three man roster, at least
the initial version of that roster last night, just about
an hour after the NFL deadline mandated they get down
to fifty three players. Local cornerback Juju Brins among the
casualties yesterday. Could he be brought back on the practice squad?

Speaker 4 (01:42:16):
James Boyd, Who'll have to clear waivers, which I think
might be tough, but some things might be weary of
his injury history, so we'll have to kind of wait
and see how that all shakes out.

Speaker 2 (01:42:26):
Jelani Woods, Kevin Bowen does not make the cut at
the tight end position. They still keep four, but he
was the odd man out.

Speaker 1 (01:42:32):
Yeah, again, no real surprise thought Will Mallory had the
better camp than him really throughout. So yeah, we'll see.
As James said, you know, oftentimes you get in these
situations with former high draft picks. Of yes, the practice
squad is enticing, and you know the situation that you've
been in, but also do you view it as, hey,
here's an opportunity to go find a fresh start somewhere else.
So again, we'll get clarity on a lot of this

(01:42:54):
here pretty soon. Noon is when the waiver claims get processed,
and then we'll here from Chris Bout a little bit
after last time.

Speaker 2 (01:43:02):
Now I would look forward to that. In the meantime,
the Indiana Fever advanced closer to a potential playoff spot
last night with a twenty. They've improved their record to
twenty and eighteen with a ninety five, seventy five to
twenty point win over the.

Speaker 6 (01:43:17):
The half.

Speaker 2 (01:43:18):
I would say Seattle Storm last night, who just in
the second half were never really even in the basketball game, James, Nope,
they got beat down. The storm was put on them
last night. And shouts to Odyssey Simms, who I think
had a great game, probably her best game as a
Fever member. And they're right in the thick of it,
as they've been all year, despite and you know, obviously

(01:43:38):
going through some major injuries, one of them being the
most popular one being the absence of Caitlin Clark. That
was her sixteenth straight game of not being available last night.
Hopefully she gets back soon. But the team is now
twenty and eighteen, sixth place in the WNBA standings, three
and a half games out of the fourth spot, which
Phoenix occupies right now. That would be home court advantage

(01:43:58):
in the first round the playoffs. But the good news
is two games up on the La Sparks for ninth place,
and that would be the first team out. They will
play in Los Angeles Friday night, ten pm airtime for
the fan pregame show nine forty five. Ok over, there
got some sneezes, all right, bless you. Aliah Bustin also
had twenty seven points, nine rebounds last night, and Kelsey

(01:44:20):
Mitchell with twenty one points goes to seven hundred and
seventy for the season. That's the most in a single
season all time by an Indiana Fever player.

Speaker 4 (01:44:27):
I always wonder if you're someone like Timika Catchings Overhels
had the previous record and you play less games, you
tell them like, hey, wait a second, now, I didn't
have an extra four or five games. Nevertheless, Kelsey Mitchell
one of the best scorers on Earth.

Speaker 2 (01:44:40):
Yep, she did it last night. Major League Baseball, nobody
went in in our neighborhood last night. Giants over the
Cubs five to two. Pirates beat the Cardinals eight three
in the Cincinnati Reds swooning. Now they beaten by the
Dodgers six to three. Just not getting it togetherantas think, Mark,
you're late on that.

Speaker 1 (01:45:00):
Well it was, uh, it was fun while it lasted,
just stink.

Speaker 5 (01:45:04):
Throwing dirt on him.

Speaker 2 (01:45:06):
Have I brought up Ellie Dayla Cruz now Kansas City
only long, but it was deep and wide, people excited,
full produce. Oh man, didn't we have a new Kevin
Bowen entry And.

Speaker 1 (01:45:21):
There's definitely moving me below the waist in between the
legs right now. Thank you, Mark dyked him for that.

Speaker 3 (01:45:27):
So not right?

Speaker 6 (01:45:28):
But what do you mean?

Speaker 1 (01:45:29):
I was describing how I was feeling.

Speaker 2 (01:45:31):
I was describing the line around the stadium. Wow, that's all.

Speaker 5 (01:45:34):
It was a very descriptive show today.

Speaker 2 (01:45:36):
Yeah, Buffalo Bison's over the Indianapolis Indians five to four.
Last night Indians played a night at Victory Field six
thirty five. A great excuse to go to the game tonight,
James Boyd, It'll be TJ McConnell, Knight.

Speaker 4 (01:45:48):
Shout out to TJ man man of the people, someone
who will, as Kevin said, slide into first base hidden
ball trick. I believe he would run over the catcher
to force the non out and like not the while
out of his hand or something like that. He would
go all out and do.

Speaker 1 (01:46:02):
It all bunts.

Speaker 2 (01:46:03):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (01:46:03):
That's a little eight foot fade away longer line tonight
for TJ McConnell or Blueie at Victory Field.

Speaker 4 (01:46:09):
Oh Blue for sure.

Speaker 2 (01:46:11):
I still go TJ, come on, don't come on you.

Speaker 1 (01:46:15):
Blue is like a global I imagine that blue Australian dog.
Longer line than a in and and closed. What keV,
can you imagine a longer line for a blue Australian dog,
then the fan favorite of a Game seven NBA finalist team.

Speaker 5 (01:46:33):
There'll be more adults on than McConnell line. I can
tell you that much.

Speaker 2 (01:46:37):
Fair uh US Open last night, second seat Swhite Duck
gets a win in two sets. Cocoa Goff needed three sets,
but the number three seed in American advances there, as
did the number six seed, Amanda's Amova, also an American.
She win one in a straight sets. So that's the
latest on what's going on in the US Open. Anything

(01:46:57):
else you want to throw in Regarding NFL pop culture,
New James Boyd.

Speaker 4 (01:47:01):
Shout out to the Swifties. Big day for them yesterday
with Taylor Swift announcing her engagement to one Travis Kelcey. So,
as you mentioned in the first hour of the SHAW,
I believe congratch to those kids. We're thirty five.

Speaker 5 (01:47:16):
Well you get to a point, everybody, Happy fifty fifth birthday.
Matt Paynter, by the way, today we go, yes, that
young man.

Speaker 2 (01:47:26):
This is the year of Painter and Purdue up there.
I'm telling you it's gonna get done this year.

Speaker 4 (01:47:31):
Maybe it's gonna get done. National Championship all right, that
would be pretty special. I'm excited to watch Braden Smith
cook up again. He's such a great college player. Man,
is he special?

Speaker 6 (01:47:41):
I can't wait.

Speaker 2 (01:47:42):
Coming up at a moment, we'll talk more about cuts
around the National Football League. I have entered the Fantasy
Football League, Martin.

Speaker 5 (01:47:51):
I'm double checking you've said that before.

Speaker 2 (01:47:53):
I have not said that before. Oh, he's in. We'll
check it next on ninety three five and one seven.
Fan people are already lobbying mark ticket put into the
Fantasy Football League and wondering what they need to do
to get through to you. And there's like literally hundreds
of these things to go through.

Speaker 5 (01:48:12):
Talk to Jeff, don't talk to me. Two spots left.

Speaker 2 (01:48:17):
We'll get there tomorrow, Friday. We'll get there. But everybody
wants in and I appreciate that, and we'll see what
we can do before the end of the week. In
the meantime, Chris Ballard will meet with the media a
little bit later on today once waivers have been cleared
or guys have been claimed around the league, and so
we might have some more clarity there. I'm just curious,
Kevin Bowen, if there's an area where the Colts would

(01:48:39):
be looking to claim somebody off waivers. What area would
that be or is it just depend on the particular
player that might pop up.

Speaker 1 (01:48:45):
Yeah, I think honestly with Ballard, they've less gone with
definite areas of need and more opted with oh yeah,
we like that guy in the draft, let's give him
a chance now here and we'll figure out the roster
mechanics a little bit later. But if you went strictly
off positional need, certainly linebacker, there's only four of them
on the roster, and then I would go off.

Speaker 4 (01:49:05):
Only one of them has started more than two games.

Speaker 1 (01:49:08):
Right, yeah, Zia Franklin being the one. Jalen Carlis is
out for at least a month here to start the season. Yea,
I look at running back. I think you need a
pass catcher there. I don't know if they're urgency those
as high as it is in my mind, and maybe
Tyler Goodson will be back early in the season. But
still I think I would look there, and offensive tackle.
Jalen Travis is the fourth round pick out Iowa State.

(01:49:30):
He is your swing tackle there. But I still think
that's just a position, especially with Braden Smith nearing the
age of thirty, that you try to look there and
see if there's anybody you can develop.

Speaker 2 (01:49:42):
Kevin Bryan texted in something interesting. He said, Juju has
been her a lot, so it's understandable he was wighd
by the cults. But I can't help but wonder that
Juju being wave takes a little attention away from all
the Anthony Richardson not starting discussion in the coming days
and especially at today's press conference for Ballard. Do you
think that press conference sounds like today?

Speaker 1 (01:50:02):
Oh, I think it'll be a lot of quarterback centric combo. Yeah,
I mean, I'm sure there'll be a Juju question or two,
but yeah, it's gonna.

Speaker 4 (01:50:08):
Be ninety percent will be about the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (01:50:11):
Yeah, it'll be heavy, heavy quarterback. And the last time
I heard from Ballad was just before they started training camp,
and this is the last time we typically hear from
them throughout a season, so you know, a lot of
it is, you know, bigger picture stuff anyways, and obviously
the quarterback situation is dominating things, and so yes, I
would expect them to that topic to be the heavy

(01:50:33):
way on.

Speaker 4 (01:50:33):
If Kevin starts with the question about adding a receiving
running back, I will certainly question where his head's But
I truly believe we're just going to be asking a
bunch of quarterback questions until we run out, and then
it's gonna be like, oh, wait a second, there's other
players on the team. But that's usually how it goes
when you make a decision. That is this seismic. I mean,
this is I don't know, people keep asking in the

(01:50:55):
text line or YouTube or even out in person to
see people ting about the team, and like, man, you
guys are been hammering this quarterback decision because it's a
big deal. Like, I know, people want us to move on,
and we will obviously talk about the quarterback who's plaing
if actually when the game start. However, for now, until
we hear from the GM, that is still the number
one topic in this market by far. That is a huge,

(01:51:17):
huge decision.

Speaker 11 (01:51:18):
It definitely made me think, and I mean Bowen, every
time I freaking read or listen to Bowen, it's like
a constant freaking barrage of a white house.

Speaker 1 (01:51:28):
The white out position's gotten better since yeah he made
that comment, Yeah right, mm hmm.

Speaker 11 (01:51:33):
They're young, but I do think we're really skilled. I mean,
Bowen ought at least be freaking happy for once. I mean,
you got heard about beat over the head with wideouts
forever and here we are.

Speaker 1 (01:51:44):
Look at this. That's the influence you have, the influence
you have that's probably taking it.

Speaker 2 (01:51:50):
You think they're in the war room over there, done draft,
They're going, what would Kevin Bowen?

Speaker 1 (01:51:54):
Do they are?

Speaker 5 (01:51:55):
Boy?

Speaker 1 (01:51:56):
Do they have bigger problems?

Speaker 2 (01:51:57):
Uh? DJ and Indy rights in and this particular one,
because I've seen this a lot or version of this,
Please ask Ballard why he thinks he deserves to keep
his job after all of this. This was a question
that people asked him the last time you had the
opportunity to speak to him in the off season. And
given the fact that a fourth overall pick is not

(01:52:19):
going to be starting at quarterback for you and some
of the other guys specifically from that twenty twenty three
draft that are just not around anymore, is that a
legit fair question?

Speaker 3 (01:52:26):
Again?

Speaker 1 (01:52:27):
Yeah, I think I asked that at the combine. I
don't know Mark, if we have that audio readily available
or not. Maybe we got to do a little dig
in for that, but yeah, basically, his answer to why
he felt like he was getting ninth year was the
window that him and Jim irsay, I guess agreed to
back in twenty twenty three and that we're going to

(01:52:47):
start over. And this gets back to a conversation we
had earlier in the show. If I were Carly Ors Gordon,
I would think to myself, Okay, in twenty twenty three,
there was some sort of organizational agreement between my dad
and Chris Ballard that we're going to create whatever a
rebuild project, and it's going to take multiple years. We're

(01:53:09):
gonna hire a young head coach, first time head coach
in Shane Steik, and we're going to end up drafting
a young quarterback. That quarterback happened to then be the
biggest project in NFL history for a first round pick,
and the thought process was that's going to take some time. Well, now,
as we sit here the day after roster cuts August
twenty seventh, you have a twenty twenty three draft class

(01:53:31):
that has Anthony Richardson looking like a bust, has Juju
Brentz no longer on the football team. As you know,
Blake Freeland, your fourth round pick, not looking like he
has panned out. I mean, it's three of your top
four picks and Again, it's one thing to miss on
a draft. It's another thing to miss on a draft
when you went four to twelve and one the year before. That,

(01:53:52):
to me is the truly damning part. James points out
if you look at the twenty twenty two draft, there
are actually a lot of nice hits in that second
or third round.

Speaker 3 (01:54:00):
Yea.

Speaker 1 (01:54:00):
The problem with it is when you are so draft reliant,
you can't have fifty to fifty hit rates. When you
ignore free agency like he has for the better part
of his ten year, then the draft rate has to
be better than fifty to fifty. And when you have
the truly bad seasons, you've got to come back and
hit on that. And think about it lately with this regime.

(01:54:24):
Twenty eighteen was right after a really bad season in
twenty seventeen. They largely hit on that early on quent Nelson,
Darius Lennard, Brayden Smith. Well, what happened twenty eighteen They
won a playoff game, twenty twenty, they made the playoffs.
Go back to twenty twelve with Ryan Grigson twenty eleven
bad year, twenty twelve boom. They hit on all those picks,
and what happens playoff, playoff, playoff those first three years.

(01:54:47):
Right after that, well, twenty twenty two was another reset,
and four twelve and one with all those top five
picks in each round. You didn't hit on that draft
at all, especially early. And I think right now you're
seeing the benefit sounds like the wrong word. You're seeing
the ramifications. It's probably the better way to put it,
and probably the one right now and clearly the.

Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
One with the most consequences in all that draft. Let's
say the rest of the draft went the same way
that it's gone now. But if you had a hit
on number four and Anthony Richardson, you're still having a
different conversation.

Speaker 1 (01:55:17):
But you didn't, Yeah, it didn't. But again, if you
hit on round two, if you hit in round four,
do you have a little bit more outside Josh Towns
and Mark you said you found that audio. So this
is in regards to why he's getting the ninth year?

Speaker 3 (01:55:28):
Was that what it was?

Speaker 1 (01:55:29):
This is ballad back of the combin.

Speaker 2 (01:55:30):
Look, it's a fair question.

Speaker 1 (01:55:32):
Without I mean, when did I look.

Speaker 11 (01:55:34):
I think you all know me well enough that I'm
pretty honest, I'm pretty authentic. I I feel fortunate to
get another chance at this We've had some I wouldn't
say bad luck, but we've had some bad luck. But
I don't that is what it is that happens across
the league. I did think we had a really good
start to this thing under some tough circumstances. And then

(01:55:57):
at the end of you know, the twenty two season,
when everything kind of went south, where we had you know,
traded for the quarterback, we had signed Stefan Gilmore. It
just didn't sometimes, and we had made moves people, you know,
we forget about those moves, but at the time we're
really lauded. But didn't work. And not to those guys fault.
They're both great players, and but I didn't put enough
around them, you know.

Speaker 2 (01:56:18):
And then when when we.

Speaker 11 (01:56:20):
When the organization decided to move forward, you know, with
and and move on from Frank, Jim and I had
along and start saying. I had a long talk and
he said, Chris, look, i'm gonna give you. I believe
you can get this done. I'm gonna give you an
opportunity to get it done. So when we hired Shane,
you know, you're still maybe I probably should have looked

(01:56:41):
at the situation a little different because we had, so
I thought we had a really good roster. Still at
the time, I didn't think it was as bad as
what how we played in in twenty two with some magicians.
And I think Jim, you know, he had enough patience
to know, as I'm very honest, even when we have
our talks, like I don't I don't sit and try
to blame others and and throw everybody under the bus.

(01:57:02):
Presented of what we thought was a pretty good plan
and we'll say it plays out this year.

Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
Well we're on the doorstep of this year, so we'll
see what happens.

Speaker 4 (01:57:13):
Yeah, along those lines, is he keeps talking about a plan,
the plan keeps changing. It's changed a lot since that
moment at the Combine until now. And my follower would be, Okay,
what is your long term plan for Anthony Richardson? And
if you can't answer that question, I don't know where
we go from there. But then two, why should anyone

(01:57:34):
trust that plan or even the plan with Daniel Jones
when year after year it has been fruitless, it has
not produced anything. So that is the question. That is
the theme, I'll say the theme of the questions I
want to get at with Chris ballor all.

Speaker 2 (01:57:51):
Right, well, we look forward to that a little bit
later on this afternoon. It'll be happening during Jake Query's show.
Anything tremendous happens, we'll let you know just as soon
as it does. We'll keep an eye on whether or
not they sign another veteran cornerback later on today they're
working somebody out. We'll keep an eye on any waiver
claims that they might make, and we'll also track some
of the just released cults and see if they end
up somewhere on another roster. A lot to get through today,

(01:58:13):
as we continue in ninety three five and one oh
seven five. That'll wake you up if you're not there yet.
Quarter to ten in the morning.

Speaker 4 (01:58:22):
I was gonna say, if you got responsibilities, you're up.

Speaker 2 (01:58:27):
What time would you normally get up you didn't have
to wake up for this show? What time would you
roll out of the wreck? I still get up about
eight o'clock. That's not bad, Yeah, that's not bad. I
am at this point in life like even when I
try to sleep in, sleeping in is like a quarter
to seven. I don't know why, I just I won't.
I can't sleep. That wakes wakes me. Up at that
morning morning in time.

Speaker 5 (01:58:48):
Dad gets up like even Daisy doesn't have to work.
He's up in like quarter to five, and like what
the hell are you doing?

Speaker 1 (01:58:53):
Like what do you why?

Speaker 4 (01:58:54):
My dad is done like that, he retired and he
sleeps seeing good, be doing too.

Speaker 2 (01:58:58):
Good for him. Let's go to the fallow before we
get out of here for the day two three ninety
ten seventy. Dale's been hanging on for a minute. He
has a question for us today, Dale, what would you
like to contribute this morning?

Speaker 5 (01:59:07):
My friend, Good morning guys, bigo iris looking forward to
the game on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (01:59:13):
Let's go, Dale, let's go.

Speaker 8 (01:59:16):
Curious your take if Jim Mersey was still alive. Do
you think Anthony Richardson would be starting.

Speaker 2 (01:59:24):
Outstanding question?

Speaker 3 (01:59:26):
Dale?

Speaker 1 (01:59:26):
It's a question that I don't know if we debate
it maybe on air, But James, I know we have
this conversation I think in the media room late last week. Yeah,
you know when you hear the ballad answer, we just
played their last segment to me, did Jim Mersey have
the parameters of Hey, if we're going to go down
this path, we've got to go all the way down

(01:59:47):
the path. We've got to see it all out, You
got to play the project out. I think last week
had this conversation. Does Shane Stiken owe it to the
franchise to say, you know what, Anthony Richardson's not perfect
the line of scrimmage, he's not. I can't
