Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Wednesday. Somehow, some way through this long week, you've
made it to the midway point. James Boyd, Congratulations.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
I'm gonna say, isn't it a short week?
Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's a short week, that's the joke. Good morning, everyone,
Welcome into the Fan Morning Show along with Mark Dyton,
James Boyd, and Kevin Bowen. Welcome in, Kevin. It's been
a couple of days since the Notre Dame loss. Have
you started to get your rhythm back and get ready
for the NFL season and the Colts coming up this weekend?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
I have not, No, I have not. It's going to
be a long long time until a Notre name plays
football again. So yeah, I'm a sour post when it
comes to Notre Dame losses. So clearly I have not
gotten over that. But yes, first NFL Wednesday of the year,
if you will, right, And we're one day away from
the season opener Philly in Dallas, Kansas City and the
Chargers coming up on Friday, and it's here, so yes,
(00:46):
first Colts injury report of the year comes up later
today and just one step closer to finally getting it
some answers.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
We'll get some answers, hopefully, and the first game, as
you mentioned in the NFL is tomorrow night, James Boyd
the fantasy football draft of the Fan Morning show coming
later on today at nine o'clock. Were you up all
night burning the midnight oil preparing for said draft?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
No, because I'm not in it. Oh, get him in
the Yeah, I look forward to you all doing. I
don't like the man he can't be busy. Yeah, I'm
not the biggest fantas the grief.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
I got for not signing up until last week and
this is what I get.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Well, he was told at the beginning of this exercise
that I would not be in it, so he.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Can't debate if Ricky Pierce sal should get his flex
position this year and all other Stuffnest to God.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
I feel like I do so much with football for work, man,
Fantasy football does not excite me in.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
The slight Bustman's holiday for you, right, something like that. See,
iways used to know I was working the NFL Network radio.
I would just always use it more as prep as
a prep tool than anything. Man.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Nah, the thought of having to change my lineup every
week and like actually caring about it, and then also
losing to somebody who might not know a thing about
fantasy football.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, not it, Kevin, You ready to go? You burning
the midnight oil.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I'm so bad at fantasy football. Yeah, it's it's unbelievable.
If something do you think that is?
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Is?
Speaker 3 (02:03):
I I don't know if someone had like a historic
track record of me and fantasy football. There's what twelve
teams in the league. I'm the Colts. I might be
worse than the Colts league.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
You got to have a dub in there somewhere.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
I think one time I won the regular season okay,
and then bowed out very quickly in the playoffs. So yeah,
I am. I am awful at fantasy football.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah uh so'm I know Mark and I are looking
forward to it. It's the yearly exercise of thinking you
have a decent team at the beginning, or you hated
I usually hate my team at the draft and then
like working on it through the course of the season.
And whenever I really like my teams, it turns out
that maybe they weren't so good. Whenever I don't like
my teams and have to work hard all year long,
that seemed to work out. I don't know how that is.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
All I know is I'm planning to snipe eighty mitchell
from you.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Okay, I did not take Adie Mitchell in a draft
I had last night, just throwing that out.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
There, taking them don't key of little faith?
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Well, I was presented with better options.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
What can I say, man, I'll tak it up with
eighty Mitchells today in the lockdown.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
Got a lot of better options today than eighty catches.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
He'll get there. Watch he's gonna be on track by
third fourth week of the season. I think he's going
to be the number one receiver. But we'll wait and
see and find out if he can actually make catches
in traffic. That's what it comes down to for him, right,
Can he actually just do the things he's supposed to do?
Speaker 6 (03:21):
Well?
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, that and just the amount of catches is probably
the bigger thing.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
But I think he's a guy. I believe that he's
so talented and he once he puts it all together,
I think he's a guy that will be available to
throw the ball too quite a bit. That's what I
That's where I base that. Getting there and maybe he
doesn't mature, maybe he doesn't come into that, maybe he
never maybe always has that one or two drops a game.
Maybe he's always jumping off side once or twice a game.
I don't know. But if you can clean that stuff up,
(03:46):
the talent is just man, it's just crazy. Jim irsay,
gonna have a day coming up on the seventh of September. Yeah,
going into the culture Ring of Honor looks.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Like, Yeah, he's an opener.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, so that I know. A couple of people had
asked me about that and whether or not that that
was going to happen before or after he had passed away.
I'm not sure if he was if they were scheduling
to honor him regardless. I had heard some whispers and
rumors about that, but I don't know if you guys
had heard any of that.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
No, I had not. So Yeah, going in the Ring
of Honor, I believe everybody attendance for the boss T
shirts coming up on Sunday afternoon. Yeah, that'll be the
halftime show. I think they will honor Forced Lucas coming
up at next week's home game. So agetting back to
back home games. Out of the gate here Colt step
chart came out yesterday and go over that, James. I
thought Zach Keeber's peace really good on the athletic. You
(04:42):
know generally why quarterbacks fail in the NFL, why high
draft picks fails, probably the better way to put it,
And certainly the Colts and Anthony Richardson had a big
focus within that piece. He talked to a lot of voices.
I think a lot of interesting voices in there, so
maybe go over that as well here on this Wednesday morning, a.
Speaker 1 (05:02):
Lot to get to. The fever had another rough one
last night while you were sleeping from any of you.
They go to the desert, they lose to Phoenix. They
are in a precarious position right now where the season
to end today they would be one of the eight
teams getting into the postseason. They've played two more games
than the Sparks, who are in ninth place, but just
(05:22):
one in the standings, just a one game advantage right now,
so they're sitting there on the edge. And if you're wondering,
they have lost two of three to the spark so
far this year, so they just need to win I
would think two of their last three and probably they
would be okay. And they returned to the floor on
Wednesday night against Chicago here at the Fieldhouse, and nineteen
straight games now missed for Caitlin Clark. It's getting a
(05:45):
little dicey at this point.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
KB.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, I mean you are playing with a little bit
of fire certainly, and as you laid out there, three
to go for the Fever, five to go for the Sparks,
you are one game up. They have the head to
head tiebreaker, so you cannot have anything I would look
looking at the schedule, I think the Sparks have the
much more difficult schedule to Atlanta twice at starting tonight,
and then I think they go to Phoenix as well,
(06:08):
whereas the Fever don't have that dante A scheduled. And
I'm curious how much Minnesota would even play there, you know,
frontline players in that final game of the year, and
obviously Kaitlyn Clark status does she get out there at
all for a brief period here to end the season.
So I was deep in rems sleep, woke up about
two am and looked like Mercury for the most part,
(06:30):
we're in control the entire game, and looked like Dwana
Bonner and Kaitlyn Clark got a little chirpy.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Who surprising that that would happen?
Speaker 3 (06:38):
I don't think too too surprising, given Caitlin Clarkson, ever,
won to back down from a verbal confrontation from the bench,
and to Wanna Bonner looked like she had a really
good night playing, So that you know, two and two
in the road trip not the end of the world
by any means, but again, you are playing with fire
in this going down.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
To the wire, all right, So we'll check in on
that throughout the evening. We've got a lot of baseball
to talk about and more college football to get ready
for already. That's the thing about the football in today's world.
Like we had talked about it kind of off the
air yesterday, how far away do you think we are
from the NFL having six, maybe even seven days of
football throughout the course of the season.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
James Boyd, I don't know legitimately how it would work,
but I just think at this point in time, no
matter what day Christmas falls on, you can expect the
game on that day going forward. So they'll work that out,
but we'll see. I don't know if it would make
it easier if you do pick up an eighteenth game
somewhere over the next five to ten years, Would that
make it easier logistically to schedule certain things out there's
(07:37):
a second bye weekend there perhaps, But yeah, it's not
what I grew up on. Let's just say that. I mean,
growing up it was always Christmas was NBA. But now,
even as an NBA guy, if you tell me a
football game is on on Christmas, that's probably what's going
to rule the viewing for me.
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Yeah, and think at the time of the year too,
you're playing a Christmas Day game, there's pretty good chance
there are playoff implications, maybe gets goes forward, it gets
eliminated or whatnot. And as much fun as it is
and it was to watch NBA and used to just
when they started, it was just a triple header. Now
it's five games throughout the course of the day. It
was kind of fun and it was new, it was novel.
(08:16):
But you know, it's one of eighty two games at
the end of the day, and it's also very early
in the season, so it doesn't seem consequential at the
end of the day, which is probably what separates those
two out. Ken. I think we've already figured out that
we pretty much have college football every day if you
count Sundays in the first zero week in week one,
in college football throughout the course of the year, you
(08:38):
will probably probably have a college football game on every
day of the week.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Well, you know, IU, I think as a Friday night game,
I want to say, it's next week Indiana State on
a Friday night, and Mark, your bears are alone on
Monday Night, just them and the Vikings. Right, we don't
have the Monday night double header this year, right.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
I think in the last couple of years, the Monday
night doubleheader has been like a Week two or something
like that. I can check. I don't know if that's
the case this year, but I believe they've kind of
gone away from the opening week doubleheader too. Later in
the season, there's been double double headers.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
And again you have the full slate of teams obviously
playing early in the year. You're not doing a bye
week for teams, you know, weeks one, two, three, So
you know, that's part of why I think they try
to throw. Yeah, del Mark said, additional game Monday night.
Throw the game on Friday. Kansas City and LA here
coming up this Friday.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
Week two, we have a Monday night double header. It's
Bucks Texans and Chargers Raiders. So yeah, next week.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
And is that spread out like seven and ten o'clock. Uh,
that is a stager seven and ten. Yes, okay, some
years they've done like the staggered start like a half
hour forty five minutes there, so I like that. But yes,
Marks Bears and I want to say the Sunday night
game is great. This is it, Bills Ravens.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
Yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
So some really really juicy Week one matchups abound.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
All right, Steven holl are gonna stop by later on
today eight and o'clock. In the nine o'clock hour, Tony
East is gonna check in with us to uh, I
only talk about the Fever. Probably get the latest update
on Tyrese Haliburton, who was last seen on a video
shooting free throws right now, so we'll check all that
out as we roll through a Wednesday morning here. Thanks
for joining us here on the Fan Morning Show. We'll
talk to you in a moment on ninety three five
(10:13):
and one seven five Fan Happy Wednesday. Welcome into the
Fan Morning Show along with James Boyd, Kevin Bowen, Mark Dyke,
and I'm Jeff Rickard. The Indiana Fever struggling on the
road last night. They lose their fourth and sixth game
last night to the Phoenix Mercury eighty five seventy nine.
Kelsey Mitchell did score twenty nine points of leave Austin
had eleven points eight rebounds, but it just wasn't enough
(10:36):
at the end. Phoenix used a ten nothing run at
the end of the first half to create the distance. Currently,
the Fever are tied for the eighth and final playoff
spot in the standings. They are one game up on
the Sparks in those standings, but they do have two
games in hand, so we'll see how it all plays out.
When they would turn home on Wednesday night to take
(10:56):
on the Chicago Wednesday Friday night, Sorry about that. Two
days from now, they'll be taking on Chicago at the Fieldhouse.
We're looking forward to that and we'll see what happens
as we go. I would think two out of three
would probably get it done, but they are, as we
mentioned a moment ago, James starting to play with fire
just a little bit.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Yeah, we'll see. The Wanta Bonner certainly had a great
game last night against their former team to kind of
put them on the brink in a big one coming
up against the Sky who have played fairly well as
of late. And I believe Angel Reese is back in
the lineup and healthy again, so that'll be a factor
for them to try to control.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
All right, we'll keep.
Speaker 5 (11:33):
An eye on that.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts back at work today over at
West fifty sixth. Then, Kevin, you had mentioned a moment ago.
First official injury report of the regular season comes out today.
Anything you're expecting to see or interested in the most.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, James, feel free to chime in. I mean, Tyler Goodson,
you know, has missed a little bit of time, and
if you look at the depth chart right now, it's
either him or DJ Goodins. They actually threw out a
little or designation still in the depth chart, could be
the backup to Jonathan Taylor to pain how you look
at it. But I think the expectation, right James, is
guys like Josh Downs, guys like Nick Cross, guys like
Braydon Smith at the Forest Buckner. You guys that have
(12:08):
missed time here lately, they either have returned or should
be out there today in their first official practice. So
I think the Cults are in a pretty good health state,
and probably a little bit of better health state than
the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Frankly, absolutely, and sometimes that's what it comes down to
in the NFL, and it's always interesting to hear or
see that first injury report just because we don't have
to necessarily guess or remember to ask Shane, because for
those listening throughout training camp in the preseason, there is
no official injury report, so we are we have to ask,
(12:43):
and sometimes it's like, well, we can't ask, or we could.
It was just kind of weird. Okay, we have ten
guys we want to know about, can you list them
all off? Whereas now we'll just get there ferm a
straight from the source and then we can take it
from there and.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
It's totally Again. I think one thing too, to keep
in mind about James's point right there, it's not who
you play, it's when you play him. And look at Miami.
Last year, you played them without Tua. This year you don't.
You play them with Tua. So you know that was
a benefit for your schedule in twenty twenty four you
took advantage of it and now it's the reverse of that.
And again Miami is a totally totally different team with
(13:14):
under center versus without him.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah, and also it'll be interesting for Miami to see
what the status of Devon a chain is. I know
he's been battling an injury off camp. That would be
the only one I think they'd be really worried about.
Speaker 6 (13:25):
It.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Seems like tyild about three straight weeks in camp as well.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Don't you think that was Tyree pulling kind of a
veteran move a little bit?
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Then?
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Well still, I mean, anytime a guy misses three weeks,
you know, you can't overlook that. And their secondary has
been really banged up, so those would be some things
to watch again. They will have a new kicker as well.
They're starting kicker is going to miss this game due
to injury.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
All right, first NFL game of the year, we'll be
on Thursday night, the Dallas Cowboys taking on the defending
Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. That one will be at
eight to twenty on Thursday night. Meanwhile, college football schedule
for the week number twenty three. Indiana plays at noon
against Kennesaw State. They'll be at home down in Bloomington.
Purdue will host Southern Illinois and Notre Dame. Has that
(14:09):
a little more time to get things together, I guess
is the best way to say it, Kevin.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Yeah, theyk felt a nine. I believe in the polls, Yes,
they will not play. Coming out this week, I saw
Indian NFL a little bit there, you know, Texas falling
one to six. More of me is like, man, you
know Texas goes on the road, flaze. Ohio State loses
by a touchdown, they fall five spots.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I mean, do you think that's a product of just
us having more spots now in the playoff and feeling
like you don't necessarily have to I don't know, keep
teams as high or them is and as little as
you did before.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
I don't know, like preseason rankings are probably largely entertainment
rankings more than anything like something to talk about.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Use Alabama, for example, was no way then I'm eighteen.
They got smoked in week one.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
People have said like we should just have a blank slate,
and then week one we dial it up, and then
week two and week three and so and so there.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
I wonder if I don't know that, I kind of
like building up the heights.
Speaker 3 (14:58):
Trust me, it's not going to happen because it is
an entertainment business at the end of the day. But
that did kind of stand out of me again, Iu fell,
I want to say, twenty one to one, maybe a
little bit lower than the other one. So I guess
that again is a product of teams behind them having
some marquee wins on their schedule.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
In week one in the coaches Poll, number twelve for
your ALIGNI, James, They're right there knocking on the door.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Hey, May is gonna look outstanding after we smoke IU
in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
All right, let's check out Major League Baseball. Cubs have
pulled it within five games the Milwaukee Brewers in the
National League Central with a four to three win over
the Atlanta Braves. They got twenty two games to play.
I believe twenty two or twenty three. No, all it
takes is a couple one on one big hot streak
and one cold streak, and they're right back in it.
Speaker 4 (15:48):
I feel like Joseph Gordon Levitt and Angels in the outfield.
I'm flapping the wings. I'm believing. I'm believing it could
be possible.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
I think it happen.
Speaker 6 (15:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Cincinnati is five games out of the wild Card, but
they lost last night to the Toronto Blue Jays twelve
to nine. You want me to just quit teasing you
with that right, correct.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
As I've said for weeks now, I've told you they
are dead. You have tried to create optimism around them.
That's commendable, but it's not reality.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
I was in an auction draft yesterday with a bunch
of Reds fans like, this team stinks, it stinks.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
I haven't just curious who had the highest price in
that auction?
Speaker 4 (16:23):
Well, we also it's a keeper, it's a dynasty Keeper
auction league. So I think Jamar Chase went the most.
I think he went for like sixty eight dollars or
something like that.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
What was your original pot.
Speaker 6 (16:35):
Ye?
Speaker 3 (16:36):
By the way, if you guys ever thought about or
heard about a NFL Calcutta at like the start of
the year, so basically what you'd be doing is bidding
on teams.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Yeah, the members of my country couple I used to
work at, they would do that annually where they would
have the guys would be in the locker room and
they'd have like a Calcutta for NFL tea.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
I hadn't really thought about it, but then I had
heard about it over the weekend, and yeah, I mean
payouts for last for the first overall pick as well,
So like a very wide range of thinking here and
how you would you know, how much money would the
Chiefs go for, how much money would Eagles go for,
et cetera. How much money would the Saints go for?
You know, if you think they're gonna be the first
overall pick. So it's very degenerating, but I did enjoy
(17:19):
hearing about it.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Mark and I are aware that every year I got
to see that happen. I'm like, I wish I had
this kind of disposable income to be throwing this much money.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
At the Chargers or something.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Marks in the back of the room.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
Mark and I only know about you simp, your bartender.
Mark and I only know about these things through word
of mouth, right Mark, That's the only reason we're familiar
with them. Kevin, I've just talked to a lot of
people that have done those things. Anything else, I did
see that the Indianapolis Indians got a road win last night.
They beat the Clippers five to three. They'll play again
tonight at six fifteen in Columbus.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Anything else you got, Yeah, some major IndyCar news. Will
Power and Team Penske not reupping for an eighteenth year.
So Will Power makes it very clear that he still
feels like and again he finished the highest of y
dry Ron Tipenski this year in the points statings that
he still has some juice left. So we'll see what
happens there. Rena's VK not returning to Dale Coyn. So
(18:10):
listen a little bit of track sid last night. Very entertaining,
I mean, and it's not stopping there. You know, rumors
of Colton Hurda going to f two, rumors about Joseph
Newgardens just period future racing and an IndyCar at the
age of thirty five. So quite the start to silly
season for IndyCar. I'll throw this out there, just correct myself.
(18:31):
The scott have not been playing well. They've lost nine
to ten so Friday for the Fever. That is a
gimme game. You have to win that game. If you
lose that game, your season might be over in the
regular season as opposed to the postseason. So you have
a matchup against one of your quote unquote rivals, you
have their number all year. Take care of business before
you have a I believe a you know, more tough
(18:51):
game against Washington on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Yeah, they struggled against Washington a little bit this year,
and of course, we all know about Minnesota. I know
that they got Minnesota in the Cup game, but other
than that, Minnesota's just been lights out.
Speaker 5 (19:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Yeah, at this point of season, you probably hoped that
that or wish that that would count, but it doesn't.
So it's all about the last three games he got left.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
I'll throw in one more as well. Purdue getting a
big commit yesterday in the basketball ranks smat Painters Bunch,
Jacob Weber ranked I believe thirty first in the high
school rankings, their highest commit since the late Biggy Swan
again back in whatever that was twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen there.
So La lou Is where he plays at so up
(19:31):
there in the region, just transferred there. Sounds like a
big time shooter at six six, So him and Luke
Urtle and James I know you've seen Luke Curdle play
a lot.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Cool.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
That is the backcourt there for the boiler Makers. Not
this course, coming season, but class of twenty twenty six.
So continue to recruit, not just the big dudes there.
And let's Lafayette, Luke Ertle, I will be watching you
later this year. I'm sure that kid is probably the
favorite to win. Mister basketball. He is special.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
I will throw one more thing in late last night,
you know, Like Djokovic at the US Open defeated fourth
seed Taylor Fritz in four sets. He is now eleven
to oh mark against Fritz all time. He's like the
big brother to Taylor Fritz, who's coming on strong. But
Jokovic is like, yeah, not not me, not.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Today, Get away from me, sir.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
So he is now onto all Karize in the in
the all the.
Speaker 4 (20:21):
US Open clips I've seen is just people stealing stuff
from kids or like out of bags of tennis players.
That's what I've seen from the US Open.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Basically what happens, first the Colts win the AFC South
or a US male wins a major in tennis.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Oh, it's gonna be the Colts.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
Yeah, it's gonna be tough with the two top two
three guys.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
A US male one a major since the Colts last
one in division title. Jeff your a resident.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
I'm gonna have to ten close. But I'll have to
look that up off the top of my head. I
don't see.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
It is radic. The last one.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
You said one a major.
Speaker 1 (20:58):
I feel like one since then, but I'm not coming,
so that may be true, but yeah, he all I
know is that's gonna be a great semi between all
Choraz and U. Yeah joker.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
It says the last time that a US Man won
a major tennis title in singles was in twenty two
thousand and three.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
And Rodod Lord man.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Boy, and so obviously.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
It was like hopeful thinking for me that someone won
one along the way.
Speaker 4 (21:23):
But sophomore in high school, for God's sake.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Yeah, I was gonna say I didn't have armpit air.
Speaker 1 (21:31):
I didn't have kids yet, I'll put it that way,
all right. Coming up next, we'll talk a little bit
about the cults as they get ready for the Miami
Dolphins roar piece to Zach Keither wrote in The Athletic
Too about being a Boston quarterback and what goes into
all that and how it works out. If you haven't
seen that, I would recommend that you go read that
good stuff. And we'll talk about some of that as
we continue. Next. It's the Fan Morning Show at ninety
(21:53):
three to five and one seven five The Fan James
Boy with the seven o'clock James BOYD move. I like it.
Speaker 2 (22:04):
I guess you say, what can make me feel that way?
Speaker 1 (22:13):
I was going to join you right there, a little harmony.
Oh sorry, dropped out.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
You shout out to the temptation to pay copyright.
Speaker 1 (22:19):
Feez, you guys keep going.
Speaker 3 (22:22):
No, they won't claim that James had some great notes
there at seven thirty three in the morning.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
We're more likely, but.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Hey, that has some good music.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
James and I keep singing to people are going to
likely hit us with a cease and desist more than anything.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
And I almost had an exit stage right there.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Uh, but no, we are. We're all optimistic because everybody
is zero and zero in the NFL. Of course, Indian
and Purdue have both won a game. We'll leave it
at that right now, KB, But we got the Colts
getting ready for Week one against the Miami Dolphins. Obviously
a lot of things different from the last time the
two teams played. But we've been talking about this kind
of ad nauseum. But but I'll bring it up again
(22:57):
for those just shoining us this morning, those first three games.
I can't underscore the importance of this schedule for those Colts. Again,
with Miami and Denver out of the game, the two
teams that you were battling nailed to nail with for
the final playoff spot in the AFC last year. You
get them right out of the gate, and you got
to make something happen. And then you go into You're
(23:17):
only playing Tennessee twice in the first I think eight weeks,
and then you play everybody else in the division in
the last six or seven. They got to get out
to this decent start here. It's gonna be a long season.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Yeah, I mean, I remember the night this schedule came
out back in May. I came in here the next morning.
I felt a little foolish to distress it, but I
was like, you know, weeks one and two Miami and Denver.
It might be foolish to say the word like playoff
implications on September third, but on December third or January third,
it could very well look like that. And so yes,
(23:49):
I would agree. I think outside of Houston, the two matchups,
which are both late in the year, I think these
are the two biggest games on the schedule, and largely
the Colt schedule in twenty twenty five is backloaded, which
I get that you have a new starting quarterback and
you have a new defense, but you've got to get
these games early because I think the schedule carries much
more challenging, whether it's road trips, whether it's just games
(24:13):
in general. Late in the year. You know, it's at
Kansas City, it's at Seattle, you know, both those Houston
games are late in the year. We'll see what San
Francisco is come late December. But right now, you look
at the schedule, guys, I mean, the Cults are probably
going to be favored and what for their first six
which is kind of wild to say, but if you
(24:33):
look at that schedule, there are some very very on
paper manageable opportunities for you early in the season.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
James Boyd Kevin brought this up just a minute ago.
One of the things you do going into the first
week and over the last couple of a week, week,
ten days something like that, final roster cuts and then
they turn into waiver wire pickups and the other guys
get released. And now we come to a head where
we actually have a real too deep what's it look
(25:01):
like right now? And any surprises for you as the
Colts have their their roster and positional ranking set at
this point in time.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
No, no surprises, I guess my biggest question mark outside
of quarterback obviously would be the other starting cornerback spot.
I believe Xavin Howard is listed as a starter on
the unofficial depth chart as of right now, and that
is quite the task for a guy who has not
played football since twenty twenty three. And for me, I
(25:34):
would like to think that he can play, but I
got to see it. I am probably a pessimist of
the highest order. When you're out of the league for
a year, somebody didn't sign you, and I know he
mentioned that some of they had to do with perhaps
the lawsuit he had against him. However, it's still a
long time to be out of the league, and we
(25:55):
know the NFL. Let's not pretend like they're going to be,
you know, hiring only people that are of the highest
you know, moral standing or whatever legal standing. Things like that.
If you can play, you play. So I am curious
to see what he looks like in his first game
in you know what twenty something months.
Speaker 3 (26:14):
Well, James, I would add two. Not only did he
not play last year, but now he's trying to play
as a thirty two year old cornerback, which those just
don't grow on trees and so and he's facing his
former team, and you know, not that we watched a
lot of practice because he didn't get here until after
training camp was over. But you know when we were
out there, Alec Pierce did just cook him on one,
just simple go route, and I would think Mike McDaniel
(26:36):
was not born yesterday. I think he will dial up
one or two to try and isolate Tyreek Hill and
or Jalen waddle on Xavion Howard. So yeah, that stands
out to me as a big Week one story line.
You know, how do your corners hold up against you know,
as lou Anroumo described the Miami offense yesterday, he could
carry the baton and close out a four by one
(26:58):
hundred race and he'd be pretty said with Devin ah Chain,
Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddell. So I mean they can
track meet you. The question is can you limit that
as best you can? They did a great job of
it last year, but again Toole was not operating under center.
And this is the guy that led the NFL and
competion percentage last year and it's just a much different quarterback.
So you know, that's really I think are a lot
(27:20):
of areas the Colts have advantages in this matchup. But
that is one that I have some concern. Can your
corners new corners hold up against a passing attack that
has guys that you better not get lulled asleep on
because if you do, you know, six can turn into
sixty pretty quick.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Yeah, and we've seen many a game where Jalen Waddle
is the guy that ends up having eight catches for
one hundred and seventeen yards and two touchdowns because people
sometimes get overly concerned about Tyreek Hill and then another
speed merchant you talked about just a moment ago, you
better not let James Boyd Devon Chen get the corner
or you're gonna be waving goodbye.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
Yeah. I mean a lot of it will have to
do with containment and making sure that you, like Kevin say,
you don't let those you know, little plays are into
huge plays. But that's kind of what the Dolphins have
been known for. And the math will be a little
a little bit different. We have two out there versus
some of the quarterbacks we saw last year or so.
I'm just excited to see something that matters, something that counts,
(28:21):
and so we can get away from you know, what
could be what might be, look at what is and
then regroup from there depending on how things go. But yeah,
I'm also shout out to Alex Lover in our YouTube chat,
he was telling me he was not confusing the temptations
with me. I just like David Ruffan, you all anybody
coming to see you otis So I.
Speaker 3 (28:43):
Thought you met the moment quite well.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
You know, it's always a hater out there. But you know,
I mean, I'm doing something right. But getting back to
the Colts, in all seriousness, I do think they have
everything sort of set up for them to win this
week one matchup. You know, the Dolphins are banged up up.
You know they're not I believe at the peak of
the powers like they were a couple of years ago
when they won eleven games. I believe and kind of
(29:05):
set all these records for points. I think they put
up seventy on somebody a couple of years ago. And
then now when you look at what the Colts are doing,
you do have I believe, a better defense. It might
be revamped, it might be different, but I mean it's
hard to get worse than what you had. And then offensively,
the belief again is that if you get steady quarterback play,
(29:27):
you should be able to you know, sustain enough offense
to put up some points.
Speaker 1 (29:32):
Is Miami a team defensively that the Colts can play
ball control against? Can they just run the ball? I
don't know, thirty five times, keep the ball away from
Miami's offense and just wear them down? Is that? Is
that something that the Colts could do here?
Speaker 3 (29:46):
Yeah, Miami's round evens I think a little better than
what people would think. And they remember they drafted Kenneth Grant,
the Merrillville product.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
Just shout out to my god, Kenneth Grant.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
Yeah, just before the Colts took Tyler Warren and James
you know this full well, wouldn't that have been quite
the debate for Chris Ballard If Kenneth Grant was on
the board with Tyler Warren their pick, he.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Probably, you know, loved him because he loves all the
big guys.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
And I don't know if the Colts fans would have
gotten answer they would have hoped for in all honesty,
had those two been on the board. So that's a
big body there.
Speaker 5 (30:18):
You know.
Speaker 3 (30:18):
They actually have a lot of names on the edge.
You know, Bradley Chubb, you know, Jalen Phillips missed last
year's matchup a former first round pick. They signed Matthew
Judon just a couple of weeks ago, so again they
have some of these names. It's like, all right, what's
left in the tank for some of these guys. Remember
they're very banged up corner wise. But they did trade,
you know, they traded Jalen Ramsey for Mika Fitzpatrick back
(30:41):
in the spring, and we've seen Minka, of course, you know,
have some huge moments in his career against the Colts.
So definitely an ability I think to, yeah, try and
play the ball control and you know that's how you know,
the Colts are going to largely be built on managing it,
on you know, living in more than the audical nature.
I think this Colts offense is going to have to
(31:02):
be more of the ten play eighty R drives than
the other aspect to it of you know, hey, we're
gonna sprinkle in some big plays here. It's gonna have
to be more of a methodical moving offense with Daniel
Jones operating things and certainly Jonathan Taylor will be a
big big part of it.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
Was Week one last year, was that the game that
Anthony had the three completions of at least fifty yards.
I remember that correctly, Kevin, because yeah, yeah, the moonshot
to Alec Pierce.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
Yeah, Doolan had a big one, right, Yeah, that was one.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Of the best roles, probably the best role I've ever
seen in my life. In person.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
We were all in on Anthony Richards at the end
of that game, weren't we for the most.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Person I mean, yeah, or at least the experience because
the completion percent is wasn't there, but you had the huge,
you know, field flipping plays. Whereas what Kevin points out
I think is more realistic for this offense, really for
any offense, is you want to be able to sustain.
I think that's what the culture trading. They're like, Okay,
maybe we don't get those highlight reel plays, but at
(31:59):
the end of the day, we actually get something to
come away from it, because it's hard. It's hard to
sustain that level of explosiveness, especially when you're not consistent
with the other little things, and so I'm curious see
how that goes. But also, you know, beyond the quarterback play,
I think a lot of it will come down to
if you do want to control the game and you know,
run the ball. JT is obviously a big part of that.
Jonathan Taylor, he's one of the best backs in the
(32:19):
league still, but what it looked like behind him. Will
get more clarity on Tyler Goodson and his elbow later
today with the injury report and also just seeing practice
ourselves and taking attendance. But also what does that mean
for DJ Giddens, the rookie. How much burn is he
gonna get? Well, I'm using slang, I'm sorry. Burn in
my world means time, playing time when it comes to
(32:39):
week one.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Yeah, and I also have just kind of found myself
going here as week one gets closer and that Daniel
Jones era gets closer. What an opportunity for Daniel Jones.
I mean, when you think about it, his career was
dead in New York, he asked to be traded. He
goes to Minnesota and he's the third stringer there, nothing
happens at all, and all of a sudden he finds
(33:03):
an opportunity where there's a legit quarterback battle. He now
is a starter again in the NFL. And the last
time we saw him he was got awful. Yeah, and
now he has one of the thirty two jobs. He's
in the easiest division in the AFC. He's with an
offense that has a bona Fie top five running back.
He has a tight end that was just drafted, you know,
(33:24):
coming off of arguably the greatest college football season we've
seen for a tight end in thirty some years. He's
got an O line that largely is intact a pass
catching corps at wide out that you would think is
the best it's been in a while. I mean, what
an unbelievable opportunity for Daniel Jones to save his career.
And I'm very fascinated to watch how he reacts to
(33:47):
all of this. This is not New York of the
six overall pick pressure expectations are beyond low for him.
And if he just seemingly goes out there and has
a decent one year, he can turn it into what
Sam Darnold and some these others have done there. So
you know how Daniel Jones reacts to all of this,
because I do think the leash is longer than it
(34:07):
was for Joe flaccol last year. I'm gonna be super
curious to watch.
Speaker 1 (34:12):
It just makes me think, can you imagine any other
industry where you could be objectively bad at what you're
doing for two years, have one, not two employers give
up on you, and then recover with a fourteen million
dollars a year contract to get a chance to start
all over again. That's golden right there. You talk about opportunity, Kevin,
(34:33):
that's golden right there. And if you perform, if you
perform fairly well this year, you're gonna.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Make twice that at some point in the future for
their life. Which two gave up on him, I know obviously.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Vikings, Oh well, well he wasn't going anywhere with the Vikings.
JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Well they wanted him back. That that's what to be about. Yeah,
they wanted him back.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
But as a starter. Nobody wanted him as a starter.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Yeah yeah, I was just making sure I was confused
for a second, But yeah, they wanted him back, and
he turned him down because he came to Indianapolis thinking
that he could take a job and want a job,
and he did. Speaking of that, I actually have a
story just came out at the top of this hour
on Anthony Richardson. I spoke to one on one. This
was at training camp five days actually before they officially
(35:16):
named Jones the starter. There's some stuff in there from
Ar and one of the quotes that sticks with me
that I use in the story. And again this is
all before he was demoted again, and we were standing
on the practice field just kind of set the sting
and Daniel Jones runs by to go do his media
and I have Ar one on one and I tell him,
(35:37):
I'm like, man, I know you're a good teammate and
I know you're not going to like sabotage this guy,
but he did come here to take what's yours in
a sense, to take your job. And I asked him,
how do you feel about that? And Anthony's response was,
this is a quote that he gave me. Man, you
can't let nobody come in your house and eat your
food without permission. That's the way I think about it.
(35:59):
They brought in man to come do a job and
take a job. Ultimately, it's like, yeah, I can't let
anybody come in here and take over what I've got
going on. But then again, I can't think about that.
I just got to get better and improve in every aspect,
so them naming me QB one will be easy. And
then again, you talk about nobody taking what's yours and
coming into your house, and five days later Daniel Jones
(36:20):
kicking the set up on the couch saying I'm home.
So I'm very curious to see and the story is
kind of laid it out, like what does Anthony do
from here? When you're being told that they still believe
in you, but your opportunities to kind of showcase who
you are are very, very limited. And I do believe
the next time he takes the field, which is likely
because most teams last year did not play just one
(36:43):
quarterback all year, and most of that had to do
with injuries. Even if it's just for a game or two,
the next time Anthony Rison starts in Indianapolis, even if
he isn't the guy in Indianapolis, that will be such
a huge moment in his career. And I know the
Colts will try to tell us that, oh, it doesn't
mean you know ever ever, or it's not a make
or break season. But kind of going back to what
(37:05):
Zach Keifer wrote in The Athletic recently, with some of
these quarterback plans, this is the type of stuff that
will break you or can break you if you're a
young quarterback. So I'm very very curious to see how
Anthony bounces back. And then the last quote I'll give you,
which I think was the most like ominous in a way,
because it's always better you get a player one on one,
especially you have a relationship with him, you can kind
(37:25):
of just shoot to him straight. So I literally told him,
I said, you do realize. At the time, I didn't
know if he was going to start or not, but
I was like, man, if this doesn't work out with you,
it's not just you know. I just told him, Hey,
everyone could lose their jobs if you're not the guy,
if you're not the right guy. And he responded and said, quote,
(37:46):
everybody knows how the business goes. If it doesn't work
out with me, then people got to make decisions. But
none of us are thinking like that. We're thinking about winning,
because if you think about failure, then that's what you're
going to lead to. We're thinking about success. We're thinking
about work and thinking about waste can improve this team
if we're worried about getting fired or losing our jobs
and we're worried about the wrong thing. Personally, I love
the pressure. That's the only way to you get better.
(38:07):
So now I'm like Okay, well you lost your job.
A ton of pressure's on you, a ton of person
on the regime to basically say that Daniel Jones was
the right choice. And so I'm very curious because all
of this makes it exciting to me if and when
he takes the field again, but also a bit frightening
if you're the Cults, because you have to be right
on one of the other. You don't really get a
do over if you miss obviously on Anthony so far
(38:29):
it looks like a miss, and if you miss again
on Daniel Jones. So very curious to see how it
all plays out, but also thankful that ar kind of
gave me some time before things went down, and yeah,
you said all the right things then, and now it's
very curious to see how what does it all mean?
So check that piece out. There's other stuff in there
as well, about how he talked about the tap out leadership,
all these things he had to learn, and it feels
(38:50):
like the Cults are trying to reverse engineer it a bit,
and I don't know if that's just gonna work.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
I just think it's gonna be fascinating if and when,
and we don't wish injury on anybody, But it's the NFL.
And what was the stat you gave the other day
about how many quarterbacks yet?
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Nine starting quarterbacks last year for thirty two teams.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
So if and when, let's say Daniel Jones is okay,
like he's been most of his careers, okay, but he
goes down with an ankle injury for a week and
Anthony Richard comes in. Richardson comes in and he plays
lights out. Now what do you do if you're the
Indianapolis Colts. This is the guy you drafted to be
your franchise quarterback three years ago. And I know Daniel
Jones comes in and beats him out, But what if
(39:29):
what if he is taking all this time and he
does continue And I'm just saying what if? But what
if he comes out and has a terrific game in
the absence in week five of an ankle injury for
Daniel Jones. Now what do the Colts do? They just
go right back to Daniel Jones.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
Yeah, it's funny you mentioned that because I think some
people brought up that's why the Colts weren't playing Anthony
richards in a Week three of the preseason. They didn't
want him to have a good game and all of
a sudden the chatter start to rise again.
Speaker 2 (39:56):
I can't buy that.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
Part of me thinks, honestly, if they don't use Anthony
richard in short yardage, they are a bit afraid of
Richardson walking onto the field and having some success in
that chatter building. I know that's a very but.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
You can't think like they can't.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
Well, you can think like that when you're sitting there
talking to each other up in that luxury suite and
you're watching guys playing football.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
There's nothing else to do but talk about that thought that.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
I'm strictly just that is my gut feel. I don't
want to infer anything else off of that, but that's
just how I feel about the situation of they. I mean,
they're not idiots. They were at Grand Park listening to
the crowd's reaction with Anthony Richardson was under center versus
Daniel Jones is under center. They know full well what
the chatter is. And if all of a sudden that
guy comes out of the field and starts to show
(40:44):
you something and the other guy maybe isn't showing you that,
they get how that looks. And again, I know that's
an optic thing, and you want to sit here because,
let's be honest, what is one of the best chances
for the Colts to have great success this season? You
don't think Anthony Richardson would be an asset in short yardage?
(41:05):
You don't think if richard sent do we need to
pop in the film of him scoring the touchdown against
the Jets or I agree? I mean like that's there.
He is at his best. So not utilizing that, to me,
is a disservice to your football team. So what would
be the why in not utilizing that? Are you grounding him?
Are you punishing him? Because that quote that Shane Seng
(41:26):
gave last week, that sounded like a grounding quote. That
sounded like you go to your room and you don't
even think about turn on the TV, you.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Go to the porta potty, don't even think about coming out.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
Seriously, So again, that's probably a little bit more of
a you know, gut feel the cults are private. Heavily
pushed back against that, but it was just my thoughts.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
Graham from Abe on texting at two three nine ten
seventy says, I'm gonna be honest, I truly think Shane
made his decision on quarterback one the moment Ar took
that shot in Baltimore, and that might have been if
if he was on the fence, that might have been it.
Right there, mister Simon getting hurt, same old, same old, right.
Speaker 2 (42:02):
That certainly didn't help his case. I don't think he
made that decision solely off of that. But when you're
neck and neck in a position battle, which I perceived
it to be, then yeah, that's certainly a big mark
against you. Because we were just thinking, here we go again,
and by most accounts, and a lot of these people
were NFL quarterbacks, one of them being Kurt Warner. They're saying,
(42:24):
this is basic stuff. You gotta know this stuff, and
to missing assignment like that, especially on that stage. It's
your preseason opener, first time we've seen you play live
football in months, and you go out like that. Tough scene.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Yes, Georgia.
Speaker 3 (42:40):
So, by the way, going back to Graham's point, Yeah,
I do think got Ravens play was the finally on
the coffin. I mean, the preseason as elementary as they
come for these teams, and they're running basic insallt stuff,
and when you screw that up, it's just one more hammer,
you know what, one more hammer.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
To add to that thought, Kevin, I think sometimes I
think I've said this on the air, AR can come
off a bit too nonchalant, like even after that game,
I gotta be on my p's and q's. You know,
it is what it is, kind of like mentality. You
(43:15):
probably need to own it more. And I'm not saying
that he didn't do something to own up to it
or didn't you know, acknowledge fact that he messed up,
but I would think you probably want to sound just
a bit more urgent or serious about it. And I
think from his mind a lot of had you with
the injury. It's like, oh, I want to downplay the
(43:36):
injury stuff because I don't want this thing to kind
of follow me around. But man, his reaction to it,
I thought, was just like, wow, that's what you think.
It was just like p's and q's. What else do
you think about perhaps one of the biggest plays of
your preseason ending in that fashion.
Speaker 3 (43:53):
So I would agree. I think it's at times a
little bit too lackadaisical.
Speaker 2 (43:57):
Yeah, you might want to even if it's just performative.
I'm like, dude, just get up there and say, you know,
I have to do this better. I gotta do this.
This was unacceptable. But it's kind of just like, ah, well.
Speaker 3 (44:08):
Well I've always felt that way about the TapouT, going
to the podium. After the TapouT, you need to come
up there and be like, yeah, I felt my oblique again,
and you know what, and I need like and again, yes,
find us and yes it would be a performive act.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
But you'll say I was tired because.
Speaker 3 (44:24):
Right now there is a large I don't know about large,
but there's defuly a chunk of the fan base, people
for that organization, people around the NFL that as soon
as they saw the tap out, they were done with them.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Yeah, and just to I know, we got to get
to break just real quick. When we asked Anthony about
the tap out, that was after Shane had already said
he'd been tired. So just to give you some context there,
when we were in the press confers room after that
game in Houston, Shane comes out first and he said, oh,
he just needed one, and then we ask ar and
then he confirmed that he was tired. So people say, oh,
(44:56):
he should have just said he wasn't tired. Is that
a moment where your coach should I don't know, like
you know what I mean. It's a little more layer
than that, but ultimately you just can't do that as
a player.
Speaker 3 (45:05):
One thing I want to get to after Stephen Holder
joins us and that piece you mentioned, James from Zach
Keith for Crisp bound out a quote in there about
it's easier to find a quarterback when you have one.
I thought that was a really interesting quote from the
Colts GM. I want to get a little bit deeper
into that after Stephen Holder joins us.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
Well, Stephen Holder is up next and we'll speak with him,
and you can listen in at two three, nine, ten
to seventy on the text line and just check it
all out for yourself, get your reactions, and let us
know what you think, you hear and what you believe
the Colts will be doing in Week one against the
Miami Dolphins. It comes up next at ninety three five
and one oh seven five of the Fame.
Speaker 3 (45:39):
Alright, eight o'clock on a Wednesday. It is the first
I guess official NFL Wednesday of the air get injury
report coming up later today, Colts will practice again that
normal cadence Wednesday, Thursday Friday, Shane Stike and will meet
the media coming up later today to talk more about
all of this. And I guess I should start with
a heartfelt even though I don't mean it at all,
(46:00):
but hopefully he thinks I mean it. Stephen Holderkin grats
to Miami Hurricanes.
Speaker 5 (46:06):
Well, I mean, I don't know how to take that
but sort of half assed compliment, but I'll take it.
I'll take it because I like it. Listen that that
was a good start. I was nervous, so I'll take it.
Speaker 1 (46:18):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 3 (46:18):
Carson Beck made a couple of plays that I'm thinking myself,
Oh boy, Miami might might have a little something of that.
That D line continues to look like that, and Carson
Beck looks like that. It could be a team that's
playing deep into the month of January.
Speaker 5 (46:31):
Yeah, I mean, we'll see. I do. I was hopeful
about Beck and I think, you know, look, this guy
less than two years ago was a projected number one pick.
I mean, like this time last year, I think he
was like a projected number one pick at one point.
And you know, I don't know what happened in the interiom,
but there's something in him right that it's there somewhere,
so let's see if he can bring it out.
Speaker 2 (46:53):
So obviously the Colts hope pivoting a bit to the NFL, Stephen,
that they can bring the best out of Daniel Jones
now that he's kind of been in that role. Steven,
what have you been able to perhaps glean from the
coaching staff for players about the type of player who
will be stepping into the most important position in the
sport and a huge position for this franchise in particular,
(47:13):
that just hasn't been able to find that consistent answer
at quarterback.
Speaker 5 (47:18):
Yeah, I mean, it really has just been reinforced to me.
Everything that I've seen and heard has been reinforced to
me that this is it's certainly about Daniel Jones, but
it's less about him than other people, and it's about
it's about Michael Pittman and Josh Downs and Tyler Warren
and Alec Paris and Jonathan Taylor. I mean, this is
(47:39):
a bet on those guys. The way that Daniel Jones
plays a role here, as best as I can tell,
is that they think he will maximize those guys. I mean, certainly,
you know, Anthony Richardson, you know can certainly get a
lot out of guys with his big playability, but just
to consistently get as much as you can out of
(48:01):
those guys on each and every play, that's what the
Colts are hoping for here. So by getting into the
right play and setting the right protections and all those
pre snap things they're talking about, they think that will
enable those guys to be maximized. Whether it's a checkdown
or a quick out or whatever it is. It probably
won't be sexy, but that's where their heads are at,
(48:21):
and we'll see if they're right.
Speaker 1 (48:23):
Steven Holder joining us here on the Payloss Liquors hotline. Steven,
I'm just curious you mentioned some of those players just
a moment ago. What kind of early contribution do you
think is possible for Tyler Warren? Like, how involved will
he be in this offense right away?
Speaker 5 (48:37):
Well, it'll be interesting to see, because I do think
that there are a lot of guys that deserve the
football here. So I don't think they're going to force
feed Tyler Warren, you know, and I don't know what
that means from a like fantasy perspective or what have you.
If people are interested in that, I think we got
to feel that out. But I do believe that he
(48:59):
will be in pactful because when he does get the ball,
he has the ability to make plays. And I think
the area that interests being most perhaps is after the catch,
because you know, we don't think of Tyler Warren as like,
you know, this Sam Laporter type of guy who is
maybe you know, just a real speed guy and this high,
(49:20):
high level athlete. I mean, Tyler Warren is a great athlete,
but but he's he's different and that he's much more physical.
So I think really his run after the catch will
be Okay, I got the ball, Now you got to
tackle me, as opposed to I'm gonna run away from you.
So that's gonna make it hard, I think for if
he gets the right matchups. I mean, if you get
him on a on a nickel corner for example, I mean,
(49:42):
that's gonna be a long day. Now, he'll probably get
some linebackers, but he's also a good enough athlete that
he can he can get away from those guys. So
I think after the catch is where I'm really intrigued
to watch Tyler Warren. But I do think, at least initially,
it may not be the force feeding kind of situation
that maybe you would think with a first round pick,
(50:03):
particularly as a tight end on a team with a
lot of other weapons.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
Steven, would you be more surprised if the Colts finish
this year drafting in the top eight or the bottom eight?
I don't know why I have quartiles on my mind,
but you think better chance they finish as the top
eight drafting team or.
Speaker 5 (50:25):
R I p I guess I would say I'd probably
be more surprised if it's the bottom eight. And that
is not to suggest that I believe in Daniel Jones.
I'm gonna be honest, I kind of don't, but but
I think I think it's possible he can be the
game manager they want. That that is certainly possible. Right. Uh,
(50:48):
He's not gonna win them games in my opinion, but
I think this team has enough depth and enough talent
throughout it that if they're in the bottom eight, if
they're picking in the bottom eight, then something went seriously wrong.
And I think Shane Steiken, you know, I think the
jury is still out on him as a head coach,
but he has gotten a fair amount out of the
(51:10):
team in the first two years without any consistency at quarterbacks,
which is the biggest factor. He hasn't had that, and
there's still a five hundred team over his first two years,
So he's doing something right, even though I still think
he's got more to prove. So I think given all
of that, i'd be surprised if they're in that company.
But the preseason predictions for this team nationally, for whatever
(51:35):
that's worth, not much, but for whatever that's worth, including
at the place I work ESPN, they're not very complimentary.
I would say that, do you think?
Speaker 3 (51:44):
And I guess it's hard to I guess I apologize
a little bit for asking the question, and it's hard
to know. We don't know a lot about carl Ors
Gordon and necessarily where she's drawn the line in terms
of evaluations. Do you think a playoff berth is enough
for this regime to run it back for another year?
Speaker 5 (52:01):
I think it's I think possibly it depends on what
it looks like. I mean, that's that's always the answer there, right,
But I think that it depends. You know, I think
you can back into the playoffs, and you can also
make the playoffs in good standing and looking like you're
a competent team. It can look very different depending on
(52:22):
the circumstances. So I would like to see what it
looks like. And I think I think she's pragmatic enough
that those things matter for her too, Like what's the
what's the future look like? The trajectory? All that matters
because Carly is a She's a thinker from all indications,
you know, she's someone who who definitely looks at the
(52:43):
bigger picture. And I think is less emotional than her father.
It's not a that's not a compliment or a or
a disparaging remarket. It's just a fact, right, Jim Marse
he moved and decided things many times with this gut Curly.
I'm sure has some of that in her sisters, but
(53:05):
but I think they are much more pragmatic and we'll
look at the bigger picture and much more black and white.
Speaker 2 (53:11):
I'm just, you know, amazed at him using pragmatic twice.
We have ESPN Stephen Holder on the line with us,
and I'm thinking, I got to google this word. I
know what it means, but if you put me in
a spell with the contest right now, I could not
spell that correctly. I don't think.
Speaker 5 (53:25):
Hey, listen, they'll just hire anybody at the worldwide Leader Buddy.
Speaker 3 (53:28):
I hire Mike Wells to be fair, I had big
shoes to fill.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
Well, I'm glad that Julie's showing up to practice. Speaking
of practice, first one today official for the season, and
we'll hear from Shane Ssichen later today. But when it
comes to preparing for Miami, what type of challenges do
you think they present, particularly when it comes to the secondary, Stephen,
Because as much as personally I want to believe in
that group, I do have questions beca There's been so
(54:00):
much change and turnover, and we know that lou Anrumo
is known for putting a lot on the secondary. And
do you think that this week could be a big
test for them considering that when they had their quarterback
this year in Tua and just the speed on the outside.
Speaker 5 (54:16):
Yeah, I mean I think look at when when that
group has been you know in stride. I'm talking about
you know Tua and his playmakers. They are a lot
to handle and I think that is that's where this
game is going to be won and lost in my opinion.
You know, I think the Colts are going to do
what they do offensively, and it'll be sort of humdrum.
(54:37):
But you know, I think if they get into a
shootout with this team, I don't like their chances that
that can't happen. This defense has to hold up and
and the way I think that will play out and
be determined will be preventing the big plays. If they
start giving up big plays, I think it's gonna be
a long day or potentially, so they've got to I
think it's gonna be a great test for this secondary
(54:59):
right off the back. We're going to learn a lot
about him right away, and I want to see. I
want to see if they can pull this off, because
I mean a Rumo lots being put on his shoulders here, right.
Can he be the guy the day? Hope he is.
So I think a lot of people early on the
secondary and Luanna Rumo are going to be tested and
(55:21):
maybe something will be revealed about them.
Speaker 2 (55:24):
Steven, the Colts have not won a season opener. I
believe since twenty thirteen? Were you on the beat? And
if not, where were you in twenty thirteen?
Speaker 5 (55:35):
Okay, so I went through this yesterday with Quarry. It's hilarious.
That was my first regular season Colts game. I had
just gotten to the Indianapolis and I moved here. I
believe my daughter was like four and she was I
think in like pre k as James knows because he's
been to our football games at Lawrence North where she's
(55:56):
a cheerleader. She's sixteen now and she's a junior in
high school. They still haven't won another one. It's incredible.
It's really one of the more incredible stats in sports.
And every time I bring this up to someone, like
on a national radio program or or even within my
own colleagues at ESPN, people look at me like I
have three heads because they don't believe it's possible. There's
(56:18):
two stats with the Colts that that people are bewildered by.
It's that one and then also the fact that which
is you know, maybe there's something there that one and
maybe the fact that they haven't won the AFC South
since twenty fourteen. People it takes them a while to
digest those two stats.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Yeah, honestly, what's the other one. They haven't won in
Jacksonville since twenty fourteen, so there's a few streaks there exactly.
Speaker 5 (56:44):
I mean, basically the last twelve years of this franchise.
Speaker 3 (56:47):
I mean, what were they even doing, I guess, Steven,
close it out. You want to take a stab at
who was the leading receiver in that win over the Raiders?
How about leading receiver, leading tackler Terrell pryor was the
opposing quarter back of that game? I think that that
trivia question we've probably played out enough there. The Colts
leading receiver in that game was who.
Speaker 5 (57:08):
That's twenty thirteen opener? Oh my goodness, there's no way
it was Darius Hayward Bay. Was it?
Speaker 3 (57:15):
Darris Hayward Bay was second? Three catches for thirty three yards,
the leading receiver going into his fourth year as wide
receivers coach for the Colts. It was Reggie winning eight catches.
That's actually crazy. The leading tackler fifteen tackles for this
guy in the season opening win. And I sure if
(57:39):
Darrell Freeman was it? Darrell Freeman was third and tackles
in that game. I'm sure this man had quite a
lot to say in front of his locker with a
little action figure, incredible hulk.
Speaker 5 (57:49):
Afterwards, lon Landgrey l.
Speaker 3 (57:53):
Ron Landry with fifteen tackles?
Speaker 2 (57:56):
What a name as the goodness?
Speaker 5 (57:59):
What time of.
Speaker 1 (58:02):
See what you learned today?
Speaker 3 (58:03):
Steven?
Speaker 5 (58:04):
Why it's time to be alive. I mean, I'm telling
you that was quite an era. It was. It was
something wow. Yeah, that mean the Lauren Landry era. It
lasted like six months and it was good for six months.
That's about it.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
It's always good to talk to you, Stephen. I know
we have made it through the long dark season and
we've got NFL football at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.
Can't wait to see you there and enjoy the rest
of your week and we'll we'll all get there countdown
to kick off together.
Speaker 5 (58:33):
All right, I'll see you guys soon.
Speaker 1 (58:35):
There is Stephen Holder on the Paylos Liquors hotline. It's
good stuff, Kevin, I liked.
Speaker 3 (58:42):
That Lauren Landry drop, Reggie Wayne drop.
Speaker 6 (58:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (58:47):
I probably should be nicer to Stephen at the start.
Speaker 4 (58:50):
Nah, you're still better.
Speaker 2 (58:51):
Yeah, I was gonna say. I think I think we again.
Sports is the only place we can really hate the
other side and it'd be justified.
Speaker 3 (59:01):
Like do people actually really mean it? Like I'm proud
that your team won't like you.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
Know, No, I'm one hundred percent I'm proud.
Speaker 3 (59:07):
No one really means that, right, No.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
How'd you feel about this speech? Afterwards?
Speaker 6 (59:11):
I know.
Speaker 2 (59:12):
I saw that reposted a million times from your coach
down at a Notre Dame. Well, I'm playing on his name,
Marcus Freeman. I saw his locker room speech after the game,
and I don't know if I'm just like this, but
I'm like, Okay, when's the next game?
Speaker 3 (59:26):
Got show up week from Saturday?
Speaker 2 (59:28):
Got a ball out? I ain't trying to hear that.
I'm not trying to hear that or anybody else who
beat my team.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
What do you want to not to say anything?
Speaker 2 (59:34):
Not to share it with me? I don't need that.
It is funny though, and this is this goes with
every coach everywhere. When you believe in the coach, the
reaction to certain videos is always great. It's like, oh
my gosh, we got our guy. He's amazing, and it's like, well,
you better win in Texas A and now, yeah, that
was Shane Steichen saying exactly. So it always is like, man,
(59:55):
he doesn't know what he's talking about, and they're saying
the same exact things. You know, one just has I
guess a better haircut or something like who cares.
Speaker 3 (01:00:03):
Let's Marcus Freeman's done a little bit more as a
college This is very true.
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
No, I'll give him credit for that. You go to
the naw championship game. I can't dismiss that.
Speaker 3 (01:00:11):
I wanted to bring this up again. Tach Keifer wrote,
I thought a great piece and hopefully we'll get Zach
on here coat up tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:00:16):
I hope. But man, he lives in this city. He
will be on the show.
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
I don't know. He's now a national.
Speaker 2 (01:00:22):
You know, Zach Keifer still owe me because he told
me when I joined the Colts Beat that this is
the most stable team. They they're really good. You know,
nothing really ever too crazy happens. This is this is
I'm not joking. He literally told me all this, like
are you gonna come here It's gonna be smooth?
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
Or we should blame Zach keeper for all this?
Speaker 2 (01:00:38):
Yes, yes, he set me up because he knew twenty
twenty two was gonna be a disaster. And then he left.
Speaker 3 (01:00:44):
Zach wrote a piece on you know why quarterbacks and
again this is the league wide why high draft picks
oftentimes you know, don't work out or you know, I
think a lot of this is kind of rooted in
that Kevin O'Connell quote that he had the Minnesota Viking
tad coach last year of organizations fail young quarterbacks more
than young quarterbacks fail organizations. And in that piece he
(01:01:05):
had a comment from Chris Ballard where it's easier to
find one when you've got one. And I found that
Ballard quote particularly interesting. It makes sense given Ballard's background.
And I say that in regards to Kansas City. You know,
Kansas City had Alex Smith. They were winning football games,
(01:01:28):
they were making the playoffs, but there was a clear,
defined ceiling with Alex Smith. So what happened They went
out and pulled off a draft night trade that probably
no one really saw coming and moving up from whatever
it was twenty seven to twenty nine all the way
up to like ten or twelve to get Patrick Mahomes
in twenty seventeen. Mahomes sat for a year.
Speaker 5 (01:01:50):
Boom.
Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
The rest is history. I guess I bring that up
guys to say, like, when do you think the Colts
could have done that? When could they have done the
We've got one, now we need to go find the
next one, because clearly that is on Ballard's mind. Yet
they haven't done that at all. You know, Matt Ryan
(01:02:12):
was certainly not that drafted Anthony Richard.
Speaker 1 (01:02:15):
It's tough to do that when after Andrew everything was
kind of a one year experiment, right, Philip Rivers one
year didn't want to play again.
Speaker 3 (01:02:21):
Honestly, the only time would have been that first draft.
You know, if you go out there and you sign Rivers,
which they obviously did. After the twenty nineteen season, Luck
Boom retires in August, Chakobe Brissett seven to nine, you
go to that next year's draft, that would have been
the time sign Rivers. Here is the one year, maybe
two years of Philip Rivers. Here is the you know, unbelievable.
(01:02:45):
You know, people lawed Philip Rivers for his work, ethic,
his professionalism, all of that that's in your building. And
then what if you draft Jordan Love When you're sitting
there with the thirteenth overall pick and Love went what
in the twenties and the Colts had I think a
little questions about Love and that quarterback standard. What if
you drafted Jalen Hurts, That to me would have been
the time.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
I suppose that would have been the best time. But
I don't know they've really had an ideal time other
than what you talked about with the Philip Rivers thing.
But then Rivers right immediately after the season was like, yeah,
I don't know if I'm playing again or not, and
turned out that he didn't play. So I don't know
they've ever really had a chance to do so.
Speaker 3 (01:03:21):
That would have been the perfect time, right Rivers, for
you would have been the best time. Jordan watched US
for a year, Yeah, Jalen Hurts watches for a year,
and then you pass that torch. I know, hindsight's very
twenty twenty obviously in it, but I know think there's
another period where you would have even attempted that. You know,
they traded future first round pick for Wins, so they
(01:03:41):
clearly never thought that with Wins, and then obviously Matt
Ryan unfortunately it was way past his prime, and then
they drafted Anthony Richardson in twenty twenty three. I had
never heard that that ballad quote James it's easier to
find one when you've got one. I don't think he's
ever said that until for he brought it up in
reference to Alex Smith and Joe Flacco with Lamar Jackson. Yeah,
(01:04:01):
Ravens did something similar. They're in that next draft twenty eighteen.
Speaker 1 (01:04:07):
Yeah, Yeah, here we are now hoping that Anthony richards
And somehow finds magic as the backup and turns it
all around. It becomes a franchise, hoping that because your
latest piece is all about that, how does he regain
a foothold in this league from the bench.
Speaker 2 (01:04:22):
Yeah, I think it's more so just about him. I
don't think they're believing that at all. I think that
they've shown us what they believe Anthony Richson is that
they don't believe in them, and they can tell us that.
But I don't necessarily see it happen. I see people
tell me, oh, you could do something like to Jordan
Love deal with Green Bay where they weren't exactly sure
on him before I believe his fifth year option came
(01:04:45):
up and so they signed to an extension that wasn't
too lucrative before he signed the big contract I believe
last year. But with Anthony, I don't think he's shown
you even enough to do that to a degree, Like
why would you hand him a two year deal? You know,
even if it's a disc on it rate for a
guy who has had, in my opinion, one great game
(01:05:05):
in the NFL, A couple of good moments and hasn't
played more than four games consecutively.
Speaker 3 (01:05:12):
And just to kind of go over, I'd see a
few people asking about, you know, what quarterbacks would have
been that draft. That draft was the Tua, Joe Burrow,
Justin Herbert six. Yeah, they all went in the top six.
The Colts had the thirteenth pick, that's where Jordan Love
was drafted in the twenties, and then Jayleen they traded that. Yeah,
(01:05:32):
so that was the the forced Buckner trade gotcha. So again,
what the Colts thought there was, I swear.
Speaker 2 (01:05:37):
To you, I was like, I know this man got
to the team, but I'm like, where did this pick
come from?
Speaker 5 (01:05:40):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:05:40):
You go, thank you?
Speaker 3 (01:05:41):
I think the thought there the Colts says, hey, we're
still close, so we're gonna go ahead and you know,
try and trade our pick for a quality player, and
obviously Buckner.
Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
I mean that delivered.
Speaker 3 (01:05:49):
Yeah, but of course the sad reality is a quality
defensive tackle has gotten you where in five years?
Speaker 1 (01:05:56):
Yeah, all right, we'll talk more about it is the
morning and that we move along and we'll watch the
story play out for itself all along the way. As
the Colts get started on their twenty twenty five campaign
on Sunday, Mark, let's check it all down. What's excited
(01:06:16):
about the beginning of the season than I was an
hour and a half ago. Guys, thank you welcome to reality.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
I was gonna say, you're always welcome.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
Trying to get everybody pumped up here any Offlis Colts
do start the twenty twenty five season like everybody else,
zero and zero with a chance to beat the Miami
Dolphins over at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, and I'm
here for it, James Boyd.
Speaker 2 (01:06:36):
Yeah, see, I'll say you right now, Jeff, whenever I
got that speech in high school, We're like, they lace
their shoes up just like us. We were gonna get smoked.
So you better you had a gun with some better material.
Did you know, zero and zero?
Speaker 1 (01:06:49):
Did you not hear? They might be better than us.
They might beat us nine times out of ten, but
not tonight. Not tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
We'll see if that holds true for the Colts who
haven't want to see an opener since twenty thirteen when
I was a junior in high school and still thinking
ball is life.
Speaker 1 (01:07:06):
They might need a miracle on Sunday. You never know, Kevin,
what do we expect to see on the injury report today.
Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
Well, I mean, I don't think you'll see a ton
unless you know I'm missing something. James, feel free to
add some names here, but it seems like they've thought
that they'll be in pretty good health. I would say
Tyler Goodson and Jalen Jones are probably two of the
bigger names you know right now. Goodson is listed as
either him or DJ Giddens is the backup running back.
He's missed a couple weeks now with an elbow injury
(01:07:32):
and the Jalen Jones at hamstring injury going on a
month plus. He has done some running off to the side,
but again we'll see where he's at from a full
practice standpoint. So and Lu's all of a sudden, it
was a bad weekend of you know, getting away from
the team and whatever. Daniel Jones turned an ankle walking
onto the field at Carmel High School. They should be
in a pretty good health state. With their first practice
(01:07:53):
here coming up officially of the regular season later today.
Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
All right, that's the Cults coming up on Sunday. You'll
hear it live right here. Ninety three five, one oh
seven to five. The fans. Last night here on that station,
the Indiana Fever dropped their twentieth game of the year.
They fall to twenty one and twenty after losing that
Phoenix eighty five seventy nine. Despite Kelsey Mitchell's twenty nine
points and eleven points eight rebounds from Leia Boston just
couldn't quite get it done on the road. They are
(01:08:18):
now in a virtual tie for the eighth spot in
the WNBA. The top eight make the playoffs. They do
have two games in hand on the Sparks. We're in
the ninth spot right now, so the Sparks have to
play two more games down the stretch than the Fever do.
Fever returned to play on Friday night at home against Chicago.
That one starts at seven thirty. Again you'll hear at
live right here on ninety three five and one oh
(01:08:40):
seven five. The fans NFL season gets underway on Thursday night,
Dallas Cowboys take on the Philadelphia Eagles. That one starts
at eight twenty, and then there's a special Friday night
game which we touched on yesterday from Brasilia. Kansas City
Chiefs taken on the Los Angeles Chargers. Looking forward to
that I wouldn't mind going playing a foreign country. You
liked them, they you were in Germany with them last time.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Right, Yeah, I'll be going again to Berlin, this time
in November. I believe Sonia the overseas games are always
a treat. And again, I'm just getting used to this
new age NFL where it feels like a game is
happening every day of the week.
Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Seems like that right now.
Speaker 7 (01:09:17):
One hundred and fifty first pick and then twenty twenty
five NFL draft the Indianapolis coach, solet Dj Giddings running
back Kansas State, see you in Berlin.
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Outfee the ze anymore than second?
Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
How in the world do you have that ready?
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
I've got everything ready.
Speaker 2 (01:09:36):
I'm a value Was that like a little warning shot there?
Speaker 4 (01:09:38):
I'm a valuable asset here?
Speaker 1 (01:09:41):
We all need to be valuable assets around here? The
yeas all right? Let's check out college football coming up
this weekend. Indiana, number twenty three in the nation, takes
on Ketsas State Saturday at noon. Purdue as a seven
thirty pm game Saturday night at home against Southern Illinois.
Notre Dame is off this coming week. Ball State plays
(01:10:01):
at Auburn Indiana State hosts Eastern Illinois, Butler host Truman State,
and Valpo will be hosting Adrian As far as Indianapolis is,
concern w on the road to play Findley. And that's
what's happening in the world of football this coming week.
Major League Baseball, Mark here come the Cubs.
Speaker 4 (01:10:19):
They come, We'll see what happens.
Speaker 1 (01:10:20):
Feels like they've got a wild card spot just about
locked up close.
Speaker 4 (01:10:24):
So they are eighty wins on the season, so they
are far and away the leader in the NL wildcard clubhouse.
Can they catch the Brewers? We'll see five games out still,
but wildcard spot seems all but a shirt at this point.
Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Yeah, Cubs picked up a half game on the Brewers
last night. They beat the Braves by a score of
four to three. Red's lost at home against the Toronto
Blue Jays in a slugfest. Twelve nine was the final
score there. Cardinals beat the A's by a score of
two to one.
Speaker 4 (01:10:50):
The Yeah's always a chance off the Reds, Yet how
can he not be?
Speaker 1 (01:10:53):
I can't help it. Chicago White Sox over the Minnesota
Twins by a score of twelve three. I believe the
White Sox will not make the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
They've been playing better. Though they have been playing playing better,
Colson Montgomery's legit. That guy is legit awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:11:05):
Indianapolis Indians won last night in Columbus five three. They
will play the Clippers again tonight at six fifteen. Big
news out of IndyCar yesterday, Kevin Bowen.
Speaker 3 (01:11:13):
I know Jay Querry was all over this yesterday, but yeah,
the wool Power announcement happened right after our show ended.
After seventeen years the team. Penske, the Indy five hundred winner,
is not returning there despite being the best finisher amongst
his teammates this past season. There so sounds like a
bit of a disagreement between the two, But I don't
think well Power is ready to hang it up at all.
(01:11:34):
Rena's vk leaving Dale con some whispers about Colton Hurdham
maybe going to F two. We'll see about Joseph Newgarden's future.
I know they touched on that on track side last night.
So quite the offseason already beginning there for Indy Car.
So I'm sure Jay left more on that coming up
here at noon today.
Speaker 1 (01:11:50):
Anything else, James, do you want to throw in?
Speaker 6 (01:11:52):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
Like I said, I'm just excited to get out there
for practice, first one of the season. It just getting
closer and closer to the real thing.
Speaker 1 (01:11:58):
Just remember tomorrow morning when we wake up, it will
be game day in the National Football League.
Speaker 6 (01:12:04):
Settle in just a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
I'm having trouble this morning.
Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
Dude is always ready. Mark, you might just be the goat.
You might be to go.
Speaker 1 (01:12:13):
We will continue with discussions about the NFL, the AFC
South and beyond coming up next ninety three to five,
one oh seven five the.
Speaker 6 (01:12:21):
Fan, ain't your damn act together?
Speaker 1 (01:12:24):
Picking it up for you On a Wednesday morning here
getting ready for Week one of the NFL season. Had
a chance to talk to Stephen Holder about that a
few minutes ago from espn'll be talking about the latest
on Tyreese Halliburton and the Indiana fever and Caitlyn Clark
with Tony East coming up at the top of the
hour in the meantime breaking news during the break, Mark Dyton,
what was revealed.
Speaker 4 (01:12:44):
The draft order for the Show League? And Jeff is
strutting around like a peacock. He's got the second overall pick.
I have the third overall pick.
Speaker 3 (01:12:54):
Did you decide this?
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
I will not.
Speaker 4 (01:12:56):
It is completely random offe the hell is this? And
Kevin's got the twelfth out of twelfth?
Speaker 3 (01:13:00):
Did you decide this?
Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
No, the twelfth pick.
Speaker 4 (01:13:03):
Isn't bad, I don't think, because you get to back
to back it.
Speaker 3 (01:13:05):
Well, thank you, Mark, Yeah, well thanks for explaining how
the Fantasy Snake draft you.
Speaker 4 (01:13:10):
Seem so downtrodden trying to give you a win.
Speaker 3 (01:13:13):
This little confused how you and Jeff seemingly slotted right
next to each other.
Speaker 4 (01:13:16):
I had nothing to do with it. Yeah, he was
randomized by ESPN. You know what, Well, none of us
saw a draft randomized order.
Speaker 1 (01:13:25):
All of a sudden to break it up. Did you
see the look on his face though? Right before he
said that, I happened to be looking across the way
because he sits right across from me, and all of
a sudden he gets this very self satisfied look on
his face, and he goes, oh, the draft order has
been revealed. And I said, well, you look pretty happy
about that. Were you number one? And he goes, oh, no,
(01:13:46):
you were higher than I was. I was like, what
were we eleven and twelve? And then you said second
and third? Second and third?
Speaker 4 (01:13:52):
And I appreciate your Venmo clearing before the break, So
that was really nice, though.
Speaker 3 (01:13:57):
Epthetic pathetic by you two.
Speaker 1 (01:14:00):
So who has the number one overall pick? Then?
Speaker 4 (01:14:02):
Ah, boy, if you're asking me to figure out who
these what's the name? S O. S. Russell talk? That's
not me.
Speaker 1 (01:14:09):
Do we have any good he.
Speaker 2 (01:14:10):
Was gonna say, do you have a burner accountant?
Speaker 1 (01:14:12):
Good names?
Speaker 3 (01:14:13):
That's Ashley's team in the league right there.
Speaker 1 (01:14:16):
Let's see, I thought he wasn't allowed to contact or no,
he's not allowed to contact Maddie anymore.
Speaker 5 (01:14:21):
That's what that is.
Speaker 4 (01:14:22):
My wife hasn't put me on the note do not
disturbleist yet we need some work on the on the
team names quite honestly. Girth Brooks, who you famously brought
up in the text line, he's in there. Password is
Taco is a league? Is the league reference from the
TV show? But yeah, we need we need some better
team names here, like Nathan's nasty team that needs to
get changed. And then I don't know what the hell
(01:14:45):
this word is.
Speaker 3 (01:14:46):
Well, the fantasy football draft coming up at nine, We
promise will not explain pick by pick because I can't
think of a way quicker to lose listeners than that
anything stand out Jeff or James about cold step chart.
Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
That's pretty standard and mostly expected. I didn't think too
much changed and thing this time of year, even if
there was one mild surprise, that usually works itself out
by the end of the first game, James. So I
didn't see too much on there that raised my eyebrows.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
You No, not really, I think again. I go back
to what I said earlier throughout the show Cornerback. I
was like, hmm, you got Xavin Howard listed as the
other starter opposite of Javeria's Ward. So that is a
tall task for somebody who has not played in an
NFL game since twenty twenty three. Other than that, pretty straightforward.
(01:15:35):
I thought the linebacker spots were expected obviously, Zyre Franklin,
a twenty twenty four second team All Pro, is going
to be starting with Joe Bachi.
Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Can you explain for our audience out there that has
no idea they shoved the Lucasol Stadium all of a
sudden on Sunday, They look out there, they see a
number forty eight in the starting lineup. Could you explain
for our audience who Joe Bachi is?
Speaker 2 (01:15:56):
Well, Joe Bocchi Won seems to be a very liked
player by Leuenarumo and also some of the guys already
with the Colts. He has been a big key to
them learning the defense, and I think perhaps that's what
helped him kind of thrive. So for context there, Joe
Bacci has played under Luen Arumo for the last four seasons,
(01:16:18):
but he's primarily a special teamer with the Bengals. Now
he is going to be able to step into a
more expanded role as a starter, a projected starter at
this point. We'll see if it's official comes Sunday, but
it should be and we'll see how that kind of
holds up, because I do think that is a big,
big part of the equation is you know, I know
Lewinarumo is not going to rely too much on you know, linebackers,
(01:16:45):
or he doesn't want to. He wants to pivot to
more of a you know, dying package, more defensive backs,
all those things. However, linebackers still matter to a degree,
and so you're putting a lot on Joe Bachi's plate.
So for those curious, number forty eight is going to
be a big, big factor I think in this defense.
Speaker 3 (01:17:02):
What about for you, Yeah, it hasn't started since twenty
twenty one. One thing you pointed out at Bosi, So.
Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
You think he's only started like two games in his.
Speaker 3 (01:17:08):
Career, right, So yeah, definitely more of a special teams background,
but he's gotten a lot, a lot of starting reps
here throughout training camp. Yes, when you bring up you
know Xavier Howard at corner James again, former All Pro,
did not play in the league last year. Some would
say due to injuries, some would say due to the
lawsuit that he was dealing with some teams as some
(01:17:29):
hesitancy there. But he has walked into the building here
probably what two weeks ago and he's been a starter
ever since. So Leui and Roumo kind of pointed out
both things yesterday. Do you look at the year offend
you say he has fresh legs. Do you look at
the year off and say he was rusty? I mean,
that's kind of where we're at with Howard. But this
(01:17:49):
Colts cornerback group they will start. It's looking like a
twenty nine year old in Traveria's ward, a thirty year
old in kennymore than second, and a thirty two year
old in Xavian Howard and they will face a ton
of speed coming at them here on Sunday, assuming Tyreek
Hill is healthy and ready to go and exsuming at
Jalen Wattle is as well.
Speaker 1 (01:18:09):
Let me ask you, James, how much do you think
Xavi and Howard getting the start here has to do
with his familiarity day in day out with the receivers
for the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (01:18:17):
Very little, Honestly. I think all of us know that
they're fast and they're good, so I think it has
to do more with just some of the need for
this team to really add some guys on the outside,
add some cornerbacks, because there's questions there. And I do
want to keep an eye on Jyleen Jones. How healthy
(01:18:38):
is he this week and could he still push for
a starting role If Xavin Howard isn't quite ready yet
or just doesn't have it anymore, that is a big
question for me.
Speaker 3 (01:18:47):
I know we've joked a bit about Jeff and the
eighty is it eighty or eighty five catches Forrady.
Speaker 1 (01:18:52):
Mitchell eighty, It'll be ninety by the time this season.
Speaker 4 (01:18:55):
For eighty like the all time receptions record.
Speaker 1 (01:18:58):
By by week four, I will have predicted twelve wins
in one hundred and five catches for eighty minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:19:04):
He is listed as a backup on the first depth chart,
No surprise there. What do you guys think weekly playing
time for Ady Mitchell will look like? Obviously you do
rotate at wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (01:19:15):
Yeah, I think. I think in the where the Colts
are at this point in time, and with Daniel Jones,
he'll start to find rhythm with guys. And I think
as these guys the first two three weeks start to
show that they can be trusted, that they're the guy
you're gonna throw to, which certainly Michael Pittman is one
of those guys, and I don't know why Alec Pierce
wouldn't be. I just believe, over the course of you're
(01:19:37):
the eighty Mitchell's talent. If he can knock the knucklehead
stuff off, it will prevent I really believe that this guy,
this is again, this is just me. I believe he's
a number one wide receiver talent waiting to happen. Will
it be this year, I don't know, but I'm hopeful.
Speaker 2 (01:19:54):
So to answer Kevin's question about how much he's gonna play,
he played thirty five percent of the offensive snaps Last year,
I put it at maybe forty two.
Speaker 1 (01:20:06):
So just slightly better, is what you're thinking.
Speaker 3 (01:20:08):
Yeah, I think when everybody was healthy, he kind of
hovered around like fifteen ish snaps a game. And again
going into week one, assuming Josh Downs is good to
go with that hamstring, it looks to be everybody's healthy,
So is it still fifteen? You know, Michael Pittman Junior
was managing a back last year of course, So I
don't know. It's I do think they obviously want Mitchell
to play. I just don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:20:29):
Picture like, how many four wide receiver sets are they
going to have?
Speaker 3 (01:20:31):
Well, yeah, and obviously you know you'd try to be
taking you know, Piercer Pittman off the field for some
of that. Here, by the way, thank you to listener
Ryan from Chicago has delivered a lovely breakfast to us
here good on this Wednesday morning. Ryan that we cannot
thank you enough for that. That is a is a
very kind justice. That's a big a lot of breakfast
(01:20:52):
he delivered too, Ryan. Thank you that Ryan from Chicago
land proving that good things do come from Chicago.
Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
Mark much appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (01:21:01):
Just put them in this room right now.
Speaker 1 (01:21:02):
Yeah, you know, look at you.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
Romeoville is not Chicago. It's indicative on the.
Speaker 2 (01:21:07):
Well, technically, his text line name is Chicago Land.
Speaker 5 (01:21:10):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:21:11):
So, yeah, you're right here.
Speaker 2 (01:21:12):
Yeah, let's be journalists here please.
Speaker 1 (01:21:14):
I was thinking about you the other day. The most
random thing happened. I was paying a bill for spectrum,
and all of a sudden, when I went to they
about me.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
Were you paying bill? No, that's not good.
Speaker 1 (01:21:23):
I couldn't help it because at the very top it said,
we are sorry, we are experiencing a a service outage
in Romeoville, Illinois.
Speaker 5 (01:21:31):
Right now.
Speaker 1 (01:21:32):
James went over the weekend and look what happened.
Speaker 2 (01:21:34):
No power stays on wherever I go. It's like the sun,
all right, the stars shines so bright.
Speaker 4 (01:21:40):
You're putting out.
Speaker 2 (01:21:41):
Did you know how I go? They know when I
when I crossed over Romavi, They're like, man, the celebrities here.
You know, I'm a man. Where come from?
Speaker 1 (01:21:47):
We take a look at the Indiana Fever at the
AFC South. Next, it's the Fan Morning Show ninety three
five and one oh seven five The Fan.
Speaker 3 (01:21:54):
Well fifteen minutes away. Tony East is gonna join us.
We'll talk about the fever and I'm which fire they're
playing with here in the final six days of the
regular seasons, they try to secure one of those final
playoff spots, a potential return for Caitlin Clark. Also, he
had a great podcast on' ben Nick Matheren and him
and Aeronie Smith those two contract extensions that could be
(01:22:16):
happening for them, kind of the pros and cons of both.
Tony as always had some great, great insight and our
fantasy football draft fifteen minutes away, Jeffson, you said you
were cooking up a prize for our winner here do
we should we reveal anything on air?
Speaker 1 (01:22:33):
I had to deal with some unfortunately other stuff yesterday,
but we will have one by the end of the show.
I'll figure out exactly where to do.
Speaker 3 (01:22:41):
But it'll be some that geeze right there.
Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
There's a couple of things we're looking at, but I
just got to make sure that I can deliver on
the promise that we make.
Speaker 3 (01:22:48):
So people are saying, I would rather have the twelfth
pick than where you guys are drafting.
Speaker 4 (01:22:53):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
I don't want to have them those people say when
they don't have.
Speaker 1 (01:22:59):
The first I personally like the fifth or sixth pick up.
Speaker 4 (01:23:02):
Yeah, I like to be in the middle because if
you're at this, like I'm at third, so I'm not
picking again until like twenty two, So the talent gap
is going to be vast, whereas you get to double
up and get twelve and thirteen.
Speaker 3 (01:23:13):
So you can be looking at like, you know, are
you trying to spend this?
Speaker 4 (01:23:17):
No, you can get like a Brian Thomas Junior and
a Drake London. Be like a Blade, a Jonathan Taylor
and a Puka Nakua. You could be sitting in the
cat Burns.
Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
See he can he can get Brian Robinson Junior.
Speaker 4 (01:23:30):
Well, I wouldn't go there. I'd maybe pump the brakes
on Brian Robinson Junior real quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:23:35):
The Fever lost last night to the Phoenix Mercury. They
play again on Friday night against Chicago. We'll talk to
Tony East about that coming up in a moment. But
it's time now for a little bit of a Fever
focus brought to you after every game by Payless Liquors,
getting more and pay less at payless Liquors. Look, they
got it done last night. Kelsey Mitchell had twenty nine
points of Leah Boston a near double double with eleven
(01:23:56):
and eight, and Phoenix is just playing better basketball than
any is right now. And without Caitlin Clark right now,
it feels like James, there are a lot of teams
that just are just better as a team right now.
I mean, look at all the injuries that the Fever
have had. At some point it starts to mount up
and add up.
Speaker 2 (01:24:13):
Yes, but at the same time, this is the team
that you know has. They're two and two in their
last four games. I guess you can say two and
four of their last six, So yeah, they're kind of
stuttering to the finish line. But they're right there and
they have, like I said, a gimme game Friday against Chicago.
Chicago's lost nine to ten. They're your quote unquote rival.
You can't lose that game, expect to go to the playoffs.
(01:24:36):
But also looking on the other side, who they're kind
of competing with for that eight spot. The Sparks have
a much tougher schedule to close out the season in
my opinion, so that's something to keep in mind. I
believe they have a couple of matchups with some playoff
teams already. They have two games against Atlanta Dream they
have another one against the Aces to end the season,
so they have a tougher road to go. So you
(01:24:57):
have to just take care of business at home Friday
and then see where you go from there.
Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
And as resilient as they have been, and I give
them a lot of credit for that, but if you
go back a little bit further too, they're just three
and six in their last nine, so they've come up
with some wins that they've really had to have which
have kept them in this playoff race. And the resiliency
has been tremendous with all of the losses they have had.
And yes, there are other teams around them and by
them that have their own challenges. And I do think
(01:25:21):
the Fever will sneak in and get this done. But
it is starting to get a little interesting, where maybe
three weeks ago it wasn't so interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
Yeah, I don't know if they get in. They got
to handle business, but like I said, the schedule, the
way it's kind of laid out, you should be in
a good position. I also wonder when it comes to
that season finale game at home against Minnesota, could the
links be resting some players at that point depending on
where they're seated at and if they can move up
or down. Because we know they're a lock for the playoffs,
it's just a matter of will they be the number
one overall seat.
Speaker 1 (01:25:49):
You had a chance to get the kids to one
of those games yet.
Speaker 3 (01:25:51):
Viv No, No, we have not gotten a game. Went
to a couple last year. But yeah, just busy summer
and yeah, wife very pregnant, so you out up all that.
Not a lot of opportunities to get to a Fever game.
Speaker 2 (01:26:03):
The Aces are number two in the standings right now.
Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (01:26:06):
Yeah, they've really turned it around here late in the year.
And again the Sparks have the Atlanta Dream now tonight,
and again I think it's Friday, so I think they've
got the tougher schedule down the stretch certainly, which should
bode well.
Speaker 5 (01:26:17):
For the Fever.
Speaker 3 (01:26:19):
I did have to laugh. We brought up the Zach
Keeper piece earlier on why quarterbacks fail drafted high, why
they fail in the league. Did you see the Matt
Ryan quote, James where it took a shot at ball State.
Speaker 2 (01:26:34):
I did see that. I thought it was funny, But
I mean, there.
Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
Goes Matt Ryan's chances to what did he say show
up to Mount See. I mean, have some meals paid
for you. Here's a reference to the NFL the difficulty
of the grind of a sixteen seventeen game schedule, And
of course, tongue in cheek, he goes, plus, there are
no ball states on your schedule till that's a bury
otom we have.
Speaker 2 (01:26:54):
Matt Ryan, he.
Speaker 1 (01:26:56):
Almost hope that one of his friends played at Ball State,
and he's like taking a little shot at his friend there.
Speaker 3 (01:27:01):
I did think there was an excellent analogy that Matt
Hasselbeck used in that piece where he referenced the difference
between scouts and coaches falling in love with quarterbacks, and
the analogy was builders and realtters. They're in the same business,
but they don't always get along. They don't always see
(01:27:23):
eye to eye. And in the scouting business, you probably
fall in love with the traits more than in the
coaching business, you probably fall in love with real actual
production on the field. Yeah, and I don't think it's
apples to apples to Anthony Rigson though, because anything Shane
Sdykeen was a huge believer in Richardson. But I think
(01:27:44):
generally that analogy checks out when it comes to draft.
Speaker 1 (01:27:50):
Yeah, I would agree with that.
Speaker 3 (01:27:54):
Nothing more to add.
Speaker 2 (01:27:57):
So I thought it was a great.
Speaker 3 (01:28:02):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:28:04):
No, I was waiting, I thought, but.
Speaker 1 (01:28:07):
I kind of thought it spoke for it tough, don't you.
Speaker 2 (01:28:11):
So to get back to your question, Kevin, because I
don't want to leave your hanging brother. I did find
it interesting that within that same analogy, he was talking
about how when you're evaluating some of the drills throughout
those you know, like glorified I don't know, pro days
is basically what the combine is. He's like, on one side,
you're you get the crowd, which is kind of like me,
(01:28:34):
and in the scouts, I think are more of that
ilk where it's like I've seen it no more than me.
But when you see Anthony Richardson and Will Levis or
somebody throw it deep finally at Lucas Oil Stadium, throughout
the combine, you get all the o's and os, whereas
some coaches probably going, Okay, you're never gonna throw it
that deep in a real game, and you held the
ball forever, you know, is that the right read? And
(01:28:56):
they're probably more concerned with some of the things when
it comes to accuracy. I mean even like routes like,
for example, like deep posts, skinny posts, things like that.
I think those are the routes where coaches are probably like,
oh yeah, he can throw it, but you know, is
the timing right, is that window right? Is the accuracy right?
And honestly it comes down to would you rather have
(01:29:18):
you know, the accuracy over the arm strength? You know
what's functional? I always think about that too, like what
is the functional football strength? We have these drills, I
think they are more more like TV drills, Like every
year we'll see the quarterbacks go up there and throw
the football, and it's like who can throw at the hardest,
who can throw out the fastest? Who cares because in
a real game, you're never gonna throw it, you know,
(01:29:38):
sixty miles an hour to your running back come out
of the backfield. So these are all things that I'm
curious about.
Speaker 4 (01:29:42):
It was the sound of Kevin's analogy, gosh, death yours.
Speaker 3 (01:29:46):
Just trying to help Matt Housebeck out there, and all
of a sudden, I know it's met with crickets.
Speaker 4 (01:29:50):
It was like a farted you know.
Speaker 1 (01:29:52):
I was waiting for it, kind of considering the whole thing,
but I didn't have time.
Speaker 3 (01:29:57):
Again, I don't think this supplies to Anthony Richardson, though
I don't think this was a Scouts believe. Sure were
the Scouts obviously Morocco Brown boots on the ground there
and never with it. But I think Shane Stiken was
a definite believer and maybe he believed too much in
the traits, believe too much in the Hey, I'm going
to coach him up to tap into some of that,
(01:30:21):
because I mean, it is odd they've largely changed their
tune here in two years. We don't need the home
run hitter. We don't need the self creator, we don't
need the big play guy. We need methodical. Oh we
need boring, we need Bruce arians quote, And they're like,
I'm a quarterback that runs the offense.
Speaker 1 (01:30:39):
And honestly, they're more afraid of what he might do
than they are confident in what he could do. Sure,
at this point in time is what it is they're
afraid of it.
Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
I thought that quote was money from Bruce because I
could totally see Shane experience in that same thing, where
he's like, yes, you can do all these freakish things,
but can you do the simple things to keep us
on track?
Speaker 3 (01:31:00):
Asked the question X, execute the x's and o's execute
what I draw up on the whiteboard. That's what the
culture hoping for here with Daniel Jones. Not gonna be
much of a self creator, not gonna do a lot
of Hoodini like things, but can he take the game
plan and make it work?
Speaker 1 (01:31:15):
Coming up at a moment, we'll check in on the
fever and the latest on Tyrese Halibert and Tony E.
Stop spies. We continue next to ninety three five one
oh seven five.
Speaker 4 (01:31:23):
It's draft time. Let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:31:24):
We'll start that too. Good morning. We'll get to Tony.
So the second the Fantasy football draft of the Fan
Morning Show is underway as the number one selection been made.
Because I'm not logged in yet, I've got.
Speaker 4 (01:31:36):
To get in there, buddy, I got a right now.
Speaker 3 (01:31:38):
Jeff, you are literally on the clock.
Speaker 1 (01:31:39):
Well then they're probably gonna get auto drafted this first one,
which is fine in the first two picks.
Speaker 4 (01:31:43):
So here we come.
Speaker 3 (01:31:45):
We're talking about this draft for two weeks. The first
dude took a full minute on the clock, and now
Jeff's not even logged into auto draft.
Speaker 1 (01:31:53):
Apparently my password is not what I thought it was. Oh,
it's number two. What you can't screw up.
Speaker 3 (01:32:02):
With an auto draft that this drafting, Matt Gay, Yeah right, Mark,
this is going to take us three hours. The first
two dudes of literally Jeff and this other guy have
literally taken every second.
Speaker 1 (01:32:12):
There we go. I'm changing it as we speak.
Speaker 2 (01:32:15):
Oh gosh.
Speaker 5 (01:32:16):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:32:17):
In the meantime, why don't you bring in Tony East
and we can talk about some real things.
Speaker 3 (01:32:21):
Because I don't draft till the end. Tony East locked
on Pacers and has your coverage Fever and Pacers is
an excellent job with that. Tony. We haven't talked in
a while. How's life, man, It's great.
Speaker 8 (01:32:34):
I woke up and I've been all in on this
Kawhi Leonard Pablo Torre thing this morning, which.
Speaker 3 (01:32:41):
Is yeah, I saw this come across the wire, but
I haven't been able to read too much on it.
Could you kind of fill us in on it? Thanks
for you know, sharing this news.
Speaker 8 (01:32:51):
So I need to actually listen to the podcast, but
just from reading tweets and watching people react to what
the CBA rules are, apparently a company was created Bough
and then Steve Bomer invested a bunch of money in it,
and then that company signed Kawhi Leonard to a contract
that pays him twenty eight million dollars if he's playing
for the Clippers. That's on top of his NBA contract.
(01:33:13):
Very obviously salary caps are convention Uh, completely crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:33:18):
That sounds highly illegal. But it sounds like something that
was done like in.
Speaker 5 (01:33:21):
Those It sounds like college.
Speaker 3 (01:33:22):
Nil, it sounds like yeah, like how like people played
for like the SEC schools like ten years ago.
Speaker 6 (01:33:30):
It's crazy.
Speaker 8 (01:33:32):
Uh, and it's going to be a thing for the
NBA because you can't do that.
Speaker 3 (01:33:35):
So gosh, that's wild.
Speaker 2 (01:33:37):
Well, you know, boardman gets paid, so sounds a Kawhi
Leonard baby get everything else coming.
Speaker 8 (01:33:43):
Yet, of all the players getting paid under the table,
the guy who had all these questions.
Speaker 6 (01:33:47):
About like is he actually heard or not, is the
funniest one. Objectively, Yes, yes, I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:33:52):
This is just the tip of the iceberg, as they say, Tony,
oh yes, pivoting a bit to the fever we saw
last night weren't quite able to stage that fourth quarter
comeback against the Phoenix Mercury. So now, with three games
left in the season, Tony, how dicey is it for them?
I know you've been doing on your Twitter. I've enjoyed
saying like, Okay, it could be from this range to
(01:34:13):
this range. They can't fall below this, they can't get
above this as far as the standings go. But how
big is Friday Night in just the overall field and
state of this team.
Speaker 8 (01:34:22):
Yeah, they've had a great couple of days with the
Sparks beating the Storm, and the Valkyries look really great recently,
but their odds are still probably pretty high just because
of two things. One is that Golden State and Seattle
still play each other once. It's actually the Storm's last
game of the season, I believe, so one.
Speaker 6 (01:34:41):
Of those teams has to lose that game, right, and
that by.
Speaker 8 (01:34:44):
Default helps the Fever in their quest to catch or
stay ahead of somebody else. And then the other thing
that helps them is the Sparks have five games left,
which is still a lot, but they all but one
of them are really hard teams. They still play the
Aces of the Mercury, and they start a two games
set in Atlanta against a Dream today tonight, I believe,
And so because their schedule is hard and they have
(01:35:07):
to straight up leap frog the Fever, but they have
two wins fewer than The odds for the Fever are
still pretty high, mostly because of that Sparks part, but
they did not have a good weekend in terms of
their odds with those losses, with LA coming out of
some tight, close games, and the Fever really need to
I mean, they're gonna be favored in their next two games,
like they really need to get both of them, particularly
(01:35:29):
one of them, because you know, it is at least
plausible for them to miss it in a way that
I wasn't sure was the case after they beat the Sparks.
But I still think their odds are pretty high given
all the factors outside of their own team.
Speaker 1 (01:35:40):
Tony, how well could this team do without Caitlin Clark
in the postseason?
Speaker 8 (01:35:45):
Yeah, you know, I thought about that a lot recently
because they have some great wins even without her this season,
they won the Commission's Cup title game without her. I
guess the Links the best team in the league, and
they have some other like high quality wins against good teams,
And it's so easy for me to say, well, I
still have Kelsey Mitchell, they still leave Boston, Like that's
two all star level talents that are are good, and
(01:36:07):
they have other good players It's just.
Speaker 6 (01:36:09):
That was earlier in the.
Speaker 8 (01:36:10):
Season when they were way less banged up and had
players that they intended to have on their team this
year is still healthy and playing, and since then they
lost Darry McDonald and Sidy Coulson and Zovie Cunningham and
they've been playing players.
Speaker 6 (01:36:20):
Who are on the team for one, two, three weeks.
Speaker 8 (01:36:23):
So I still think their like highest level without Caitlin
is moderately high, like in the you know, fourth through
sixth best team range. But can they string that together
with any sort of consistency. No, you have not seen
them do that. I mean, they have some rough losses
recently too, against teams that you'd think they should eat
or be able to stay ahead of, including the Wings
(01:36:44):
and the Mystics at home, so.
Speaker 6 (01:36:47):
It's hard to like.
Speaker 8 (01:36:48):
Actually, if they've showed any sort of consistency for multiple games,
I would say that it's possible for them to reach
a level that without.
Speaker 6 (01:36:55):
Clark could get them through a round.
Speaker 8 (01:36:57):
But you know, they need to find they have three
games up to find some of those answers, because on
paper they should be at least decent, but they've shown
really high flashes without her, and just some totally low
like they did on Sunday in Golden State Valley.
Speaker 6 (01:37:10):
So they just look like they can't score Tony.
Speaker 3 (01:37:13):
Tomorrow strikes me as a huge day for Kaylyn Clark,
Like obviously they traveled back late either late last night today,
I don't know exactly what their travel schedule is tomorrow.
Back on the practice floor before game on Friday, I
would think any chance for her to play maybe again
this season. She's got to practice tomorrow, right, I mean,
where are you kind of at with her availability the
rest of the year.
Speaker 8 (01:37:34):
Yeah, they practice Saturday too in Indy like they had.
Stephanie White actually tries to find times for practices throughout
the season in a way that a lot of coaches
I've covered in.
Speaker 6 (01:37:46):
The NBA and you kind of don't. You know, maybe they're.
Speaker 8 (01:37:48):
Not as hard, but I think that gives more chances
for it to happen. But I agree, it's getting late,
and like, you know, this felt like an advantage to
me when it happened, but now, given the Kayalen Clark situation.
Speaker 6 (01:38:00):
Maybe not.
Speaker 8 (01:38:01):
You know, their last game is next Tuesday. But the
w only has thirteen teams, excuse me, has thirteen teams
this season and that's an odd number. So the not
every team plays the same last day, which is very
atypical in sports. So some team's final game is next Thursday,
some is next Wednesday. The fever's next Tuesday, so they
don't have as much time. Also like to throw in
(01:38:21):
other practices to get her going, And on one hand,
that's a negative if you want her to return for
the regular season. On the other hand, look, this is
unusual but not unheard of in sports, Like they will
have more time between their last game and the start
of the postseason if they make it to get her on.
Speaker 6 (01:38:36):
The practice floor.
Speaker 8 (01:38:37):
So I would say this, I agree with you that
if she's gonna play in the regular season tomorrow, specifically
in this week, is extremely significant.
Speaker 6 (01:38:44):
But if she's gonna.
Speaker 8 (01:38:46):
Return for the postseason and do the we've seen this
for four kind of thing, but it's rare, like Kyle
schwarbur and the World Series level stuff, like, it's plausible.
Speaker 6 (01:38:54):
That that big gap could be meaningful.
Speaker 8 (01:38:57):
It's something that I thought about recently, but I know
they keep saying so hope she returns. I don't know
why they would be consistently putting her up into more
situations that we can see five on zero, the most
recent one, if they weren't hoping at least that she plays,
but that is of course just speculation and reading into
what they've chosen to do so far.
Speaker 2 (01:39:14):
Last one on Caitlin Tony going back to when the
injury first happened to where we are now, do you
understand why they've strung it along like this? I mean
they basically said she's week to week or day to
day ever since it happened. And has that made sense
to you? Because from the outside look at it and
it's like, well, why come you just didn't say she
(01:39:34):
was gonna miss I don't know a month at least.
I guess that's the question that is frustrating for some
of the fan base.
Speaker 8 (01:39:41):
Oh, it's frustrated everybody. It should be right out and
definitely sucks because you know, it sounds like there's no timeline,
but like everybody has a timeline, right, Like everybody's trying
to return or hit a benchmark at some date, and
so it's really challenging.
Speaker 6 (01:39:56):
When that's kind of how it is.
Speaker 8 (01:39:57):
I kind of, you know, interpreted that as like a, well,
we don't know for sure, but we'll see. We think
it's about this time. But you know, it's tough when
that is the reality that's provided, and so it does
kind of feel like we're all just along for the
ride and seeing what it happens, because that's still the line,
right And so until she does contact, I don't know
if we'll know any more specifics about an actual Returntimeliner
(01:40:21):
specific game. And that's been how it's been since mid July,
which is, you know, not not unheard of, but a
little strange.
Speaker 1 (01:40:29):
Thanks for stopping by. As always, it's always basketball season.
Speaker 3 (01:40:34):
Go ahead at him, Tony East. We're here trying to
multitask with the fantasy football draft, so apologies.
Speaker 5 (01:40:40):
Uh, we figure out our passwords.
Speaker 6 (01:40:42):
Say it again, we found out passwords. Are we in?
Are we going?
Speaker 1 (01:40:46):
I think Jeff is in.
Speaker 3 (01:40:47):
I think he's in.
Speaker 1 (01:40:48):
I believe, So yeah, I got him just in the
nick of time.
Speaker 3 (01:40:51):
So we're good. Benedic matherin Contract Ascension. Listen to your
podcast and the way in this morning locked on Pacers.
It was an excellent listen. I get the vibe that
like neither party probably wants to do an extension, and
like I shouldn't say, I get the vibe like I've
been talking to like both parties, I can see reasons
(01:41:11):
why both sides of it would be hesitant. Is that
kind of where you are? And I don't feel like
that's exactly where a lot of these extension debates get to.
Speaker 8 (01:41:21):
Yes, I totally agree, And it's not even that both
sides would be hesitant because they're not.
Speaker 6 (01:41:25):
Certain they'll be together forever.
Speaker 8 (01:41:27):
Like maybe they do want to be together forever, and
they want to be you know, he wants to be
the starter for the Pacers, the pace one Matheron to
grow with them, Like that's totally reasonable, but like it's
very rare that a player gets the kind of opportunity
in their fourth season that Matherin's about.
Speaker 6 (01:41:42):
To have, where they're about to have a way bigger.
Speaker 8 (01:41:45):
Role to prove themselves in a way that they haven't
really had in their career. I guess you could count
the start of Matherns second season, but then Buddy Hial
took his starting spot in like four weeks or something,
so he has a chance to do all the stuff
that he's done at his best and that he says
he can do, which is, you know, guard some of
the best players, Like there's no way they're going to
(01:42:05):
put them hard on the best guy every night and
have him be you know, a heavy load lead ball handler,
and Mathern's gonna have the ballmore. His usage rate was
like five percent higher without Halburn last year. That's a
rare opportunity to look awesome and like do all the
stuff you said you could do and really prove what
you can do to your team and potentially other teams
because if he'll be a FRA agent next year. So
if you're Ben Matherin, you know, if you're getting get
(01:42:27):
extension offers from the Pacers based on what you've done
so far and on what the Pacers think he'll do,
you know, in the future, given the role that he's
had with a team, that's probably not it's not the
PACER's fault for paying him like that, Like that's the
information they have. But if you're him, you're thinking, man,
I could get way more, right, And if you're the Pacers,
you're like, well, that's fine, right, if you play great,
we'll pay you like that. If not, you know, we
(01:42:47):
we've seen this, we know what you are, We've you know.
Rick Carlisle talked on this show about the difference between
the rat game Ben Mather and and what you know,
pacers Ben Mather could be and I think one of
the funniest things ever, by the way, with him saying
no disrespect to Rat that's when you asked him about that.
Speaker 6 (01:43:01):
I still laugh about that. But anyway, you know, those
kind of.
Speaker 8 (01:43:05):
Differences are why he has this huge opportunity in front
of him and why it's like, even if they both
really wanted to stay locked in his team player partnership
going forward, it makes sense to wait and get as
much information as possible.
Speaker 6 (01:43:16):
So it's not a bad thing. I think it's just
kind of how it is.
Speaker 3 (01:43:20):
Literally one of my favorite audio clips of all time
right there.
Speaker 5 (01:43:29):
I could not.
Speaker 8 (01:43:29):
Believe that was the first three you said he had
that ready to go.
Speaker 3 (01:43:32):
He said in such a serious manner, like all of
a sudden, these rats were waiting outside to have a
word with him when he finished this morning coffee. All right,
last one, you know nothing about the NFL outside of
the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 5 (01:43:43):
Oh boy.
Speaker 3 (01:43:43):
More wins for your Minnesota Vikings. More wins for the
Indiana Hoosiers in football, oh boy?
Speaker 8 (01:43:51):
Oh JJ McCarthy.
Speaker 6 (01:43:53):
I probably would take the hooteris although that old Dominion
game really spooked me.
Speaker 8 (01:43:57):
Man, I know they played away better than them, but
I walked away like yikes, yikes.
Speaker 2 (01:44:02):
Just just wait a couple of weeks, brother, Illinois.
Speaker 6 (01:44:06):
I know I haven't had I suppose I suppose I've
only had like real.
Speaker 8 (01:44:14):
Excited expectations for IU football twice in my life, and
last time was twenty twenty one and they were totally miserable.
Speaker 5 (01:44:20):
So uh, after the old.
Speaker 8 (01:44:22):
Dominion game, I'm extremely nervous and sad again.
Speaker 6 (01:44:24):
So hopefully they can have to do with me.
Speaker 3 (01:44:27):
What I got.
Speaker 2 (01:44:28):
Nothing but bad news for you will not be great. Yeah,
you will get two weeks from now.
Speaker 6 (01:44:32):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:44:33):
I'll let you know because I still got to get
my get back from from our trash talk. In the
last time I Illinois played, I could not live that down.
Speaker 6 (01:44:40):
I was just in Champagne. People are buzzing.
Speaker 1 (01:44:42):
Man, there you go. Where's the best place to go
find uh? Locked on pacers?
Speaker 6 (01:44:47):
Yeah, anywhere you.
Speaker 8 (01:44:47):
Get podcasters on YouTube is the way to go.
Speaker 1 (01:44:50):
H Hi, budd, I always going to talk to you.
Thanks for putting up with us, Yes, thank you guys.
There you go, Tony East locked on Pacers joining us
on the payless Liquors Hotline.
Speaker 3 (01:45:00):
Tyler Warren round five, pick four, So that was what
overall was picked, like fifty five or something.
Speaker 5 (01:45:07):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (01:45:07):
And his average draft position is one thirteen. Josh Downs
goes three picks later than that.
Speaker 4 (01:45:15):
It's funny, Io, you can tell there's Colts fans in
this draft. I'm just telling you.
Speaker 3 (01:45:18):
Well, I'm about ready to pick here into round five,
start a round six, and I was probably gonna take Warren.
Am I dumb on this? James Boyd? I think Tyler
Warren is going to catch a lot of footballs, and
I think he's going to be involved in some very
creative ways.
Speaker 2 (01:45:30):
From where you're picking him. No, I think that would
be a solid pick up, mainly because I think you
asked me this maybe a week ago when Dale Jones
was announced as the starter. Officially, I believe Tyler Warren
stock rose more than any other pass catcher on the
team because the layup throws, the simple throws, the dinks
and dunks are going to be to him.
Speaker 3 (01:45:48):
I would think, shout out to Decatur Central. I just
picked Tyrone Tracy. Didn't our guy from the Giants last
week say he was their top back?
Speaker 1 (01:45:56):
H Yeah, he had some some nice moments last year.
Speaker 3 (01:45:58):
Catch some balls out of the backfield as well. So
draft is good. Jeff Has, did you have to change
the password or did you recall it?
Speaker 1 (01:46:05):
No, I just had to log in with a They
sent me like a secondary verification thing and I just
logged in that way. I would have taken Beejeon second anyway,
So it's all good.
Speaker 3 (01:46:14):
Look at that.
Speaker 1 (01:46:16):
I wasn't that worried because of the second pick. You're
gonna get A You're gonna get one of the top
three players consensus wise, unless you're one wanting to do
something way out you know, off the books.
Speaker 4 (01:46:26):
Ad Mitchell still on the board is up for grabs.
Speaker 1 (01:46:30):
Be there at the end too.
Speaker 3 (01:46:31):
You think Alex Pierce negatively hurt anybody could have any
you know anybody? Huh? Absolutely, Alec Pierce negatively hurt by
Daniel Jones standpoint absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:46:40):
I think the two guys that benefit most is exactly
what you were talking about, Tyler Warren and also Michael
Pittman Junior. I think benefits too.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
Yeah, but from a real life standpoint, I think Alec
Pierce certainly took a hit with Daniel Jones stepping in,
and not to say he still can't have a good season,
but just the amount of opportunities to go deep. I
don't think we necessarily will be there as it was
with Joe flat Going, and they are just in I
believe last year Daniel Jones average a full yard less
of intended air yards And for those who think I'm
(01:47:08):
speaking gibberish, intended air yards means basically, how far do
you can throw the ball on average for your passes.
They don't throw it. He doesn't throw the ball on
the field as much as the previous quarterbacks did. Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (01:47:19):
That is, it's kind of what he does and we'll
see if it's effective and see if we get Shane Stiking.
Just do what I ask you to do.
Speaker 3 (01:47:26):
Can I throw a random golf tennis thought at you, guys.
I know it's probably not riveting at all, But I
saw this last night Kyle Porter, you store for CBS Sports,
Big Golf Rider. He said this, and Jeff, I'm probably
talking to you more. He goes, I'm sure there are
a thousand answers to this, But why has the US
consistently filled up the top ten in the golf World rankings?
(01:47:48):
AKA other great US players? But not done so in
the same way in the tennis side.
Speaker 1 (01:47:54):
The thing that's interesting about tennis and tennis players is
a lot first of all, in Europe. It's a hugely
popular sport, hugely popular over there. But the other thing
is a lot of the great players from Europe come
over here to some of the tennis academies when they're
very young. Their parents bring them over here, and even
though they are technically European, a lot of them come
from the tennis academies and so there is still US
(01:48:15):
influence on them. But the sport is far more popular
amongst a lot of these European countries, and a lot
of the top guys come over here in the United
States to start working.
Speaker 3 (01:48:25):
So why did our Americans go to these academies? And look,
I can't answer that question, but so is the answer
just simply Tiger Woods. I think Tiger Woods raised every boat. Yeah,
I mean there's a whole generation of American kids that
went I want to be like that guy. Tiger Woods
was not. There was a different stratosphere than Andy Rottick
or whoever you want to label is No, because he
(01:48:47):
also Agasi and Sampris, I guess would have been a
little bit of a before.
Speaker 1 (01:48:50):
Rodick, because Tiger also kind of matriculated to that Michael
Jordan sphere where Nike has him on every billboard. Every
company wants him to be the face, and he provided
so many dramatic Sunday moments where he people forget in
you know, late nineties up until about two thousand and nine,
there was a decade there. Sunday afternoon golf, if Tiger
(01:49:13):
was within three or four shots of the lead, which
he almost always was, was must see TV for any
sports fan.
Speaker 3 (01:49:20):
Marco's sue in Morning Checkdown, I believe you guys are
on the board here upcoming, so let's multitask. I will
lead off the morning checkdown then and let you two
draft you go. We're all teammates here, right. You guys
might have dropped ball on my Matt Houselbeck comment twenty
minutes ago, but I'm not going to do the same
to you here.
Speaker 4 (01:49:40):
I like your team so far, Kevin, I'll never lay it.
I'm gonna put it out there.
Speaker 3 (01:49:43):
The Fever losing to the Mercury last night eighty five
seventy nine, James Boyd, I was largely in rem sleep.
What did you make of Dwana Bonner and Caitlin Clark's
little verbal back and forth.
Speaker 2 (01:49:54):
I loved it, and I'm always going to be team
player who is playing will always win the argument against
the player who isn't playing. So I know Kitlin was
probably talking our stuff. At the end of the day,
you ain't playing. Look at the scoreboard.
Speaker 3 (01:50:06):
Well and Delana Bonn are talking on the floor too.
In our own individual playoff the bench last night she
had sixteen.
Speaker 2 (01:50:12):
That's finding me Kitlyn to come back. If people didn't
forgot how good she is.
Speaker 3 (01:50:14):
I know, I know. And again I think it's such
a critical juncture tomorrow that practice for them. And again,
as James pointed out the Chicago Sky the Fever absolutely
owned them. That is the game Friday. I think it's
mystics on Sunday, and then they'll close it out with
Minnesota coming up on Tuesday. The baton passed back to
Jeff Record.
Speaker 1 (01:50:33):
All right, let's talk a little bit about the National
Football League. It starts tomorrow night Dallas Cowboys play at
the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a Thursday night game. Then we
got a Friday night game with the Kansas City Chiefs
at the Los Angeles Chargers, James Boyd, the Colts back
today and you'll be out there along with Kevin. Injury
report's going to be coming out. Any big surprises you
(01:50:53):
expect for people to keep an eye on.
Speaker 2 (01:50:55):
No, because if it was a surprise, I wouldn't know it.
Speaker 1 (01:51:00):
I think that you know, you have intuition, you know
what I'm talking about.
Speaker 2 (01:51:04):
No, no, no, I'm just joking. I don't foresee anything being
too crazy. Obviously, if we go out there and we
see a significant starter not practicing, that'll be notable. But
the only thing I'm keeping an eye on, at least
for now, is probably Tyler Goodson. You know that, or
on that unofficial depth chart, him or DJ Giddens be
in the backup John Taylor is worth noting.
Speaker 1 (01:51:24):
The things change if one of the other is available
or not available behind Jonathan Taylor. As far as what
the Colts want to do.
Speaker 3 (01:51:30):
I'm kind of feeling good now, Mark said he likes
my team. There has to be a bit of a
punchline somewhere in that.
Speaker 4 (01:51:37):
You having the twelfth overall, like having that you're in
a good spot. Twelve and thirteen, what'd you do? You went,
We'll wait, Let's wait till the end of the show.
I'm just saying I like it. I like what you've
done so far.
Speaker 3 (01:51:47):
Teams here, I want to say thank you, but it
sounds like me telling Steven Holder congrats on Miami's win.
Speaker 4 (01:51:52):
I feel like I've burned you so many times that
you're just waiting for the other shoe to drop, And
there's no other shoe right now.
Speaker 3 (01:51:57):
Jeff, where are you going with me on that?
Speaker 1 (01:51:59):
As far as whoever backs up job Taylor, does it
change the way Shank Stychen operates on off.
Speaker 3 (01:52:04):
Think it's a big question.
Speaker 4 (01:52:05):
You know.
Speaker 3 (01:52:05):
Last year he was second in the league, Taylor to
Saquon Barkley in terms of carries, so they obviously had
a big workload for him. And right now, you know,
who do you trust there? And who do you trust
on third down? I mean, I'll continue to kind of
drive that home. You know, Taylor I don't think is
a very good pass catching back. But at times I
kind of look at the Colts group and think, is
there anyone else that has really supplanted him in that role?
(01:52:28):
And I don't know if there is an answer to that.
Maybe it is a healthy Tyler Goodson. Do you really
want a rookie and DJ Giddons doing that, so I
definitely have some question marks there. But Jonathan Taylor went
what fifth overall in our draft. I get why because
on first and second down, I think he will continue
to be a huge, huge focal point.
Speaker 1 (01:52:46):
Yeah, I know. I will tell you this. He went
a lot higher in the draft here in Indianapolis than
he has gone in most places nationally. And I think
people nationally are making a mistake because Mark, I don't
know how you feel. I think Jonathan Taylor's gonna have
a nice year.
Speaker 4 (01:52:57):
I think he's being one of the focal points of
the entire offense. I think he's gonna be one of
the legit backs in the league because he's going to
carry the majority of that offense, just because there's so
much unknown in the quarterback position and you don't know
what the quarterback position is going to yield their tight
end or wide receiver.
Speaker 1 (01:53:10):
I agree as far as auto racing is concerned, pretty
notable day on the first couple of days after the
end of the NTT IndyCar Series yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:53:18):
Now I'm getting ready to pick. Shouldn't you kill up
James here for that?
Speaker 1 (01:53:21):
James, what can you tell me, what can you tell
me about.
Speaker 2 (01:53:25):
The best heisman Pols ever at that stiff arm.
Speaker 3 (01:53:29):
Will Power not coming back to team Penske here coming
up year seventeen for him will be spent or after
seventeen years, I should say it will be spent elsewhere
for him justin Herbert or Jordan Love, Oh god.
Speaker 4 (01:53:40):
Don't you know what?
Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
Oh boy, oh boy, James, I'll let you pick my
quarterback Herbert or Low And.
Speaker 2 (01:53:46):
Don't let me pick that because then if things go sideways, No,
I'm going.
Speaker 3 (01:53:49):
To go back for you, Herbert, Herbert it is, but yes,
will power no longer. And then I also am very
curious to see what's gonna happen here with threnas VK
move on and the Dominoes cult heard a potentially the
F two. I'm listening to track side last night. They
threw out the R word with Joseph Neugarten as a
rumor the R word being retired. Yeah, Joseph Newgarden's my age.
(01:54:14):
So that to me again rumor just whispers, but wow, the.
Speaker 2 (01:54:19):
Other afterwards will retire and rumor and rich it is
probably the other. Yeah, I was gonna say, you know what,
it doesn't sound bad. He retired at your age.
Speaker 1 (01:54:27):
I've played golf with that golf course. He lives on
up in Zionsville. He's doing okay, doing okay, all right.
The Chicago Cubs winners over the Atlanta Braves four to
three yesterday. They are just five behind the Milwaukee Brewers
right now in the race for the National League Central Mark.
Don't give up yet.
Speaker 4 (01:54:43):
Joey Erickson taking an extra lap around the the neighborhood
today because he's starting to sweat a little bit, a
couple extra beads, a sweat rolling down that forehead. He
sees five games back, getting a little nervous.
Speaker 3 (01:54:54):
Nervous heus of the Cults media room, while panicky, I
just did a panic pick. By the way, in fantasy,
I just hate one of that. I I do that.
Speaker 1 (01:55:00):
Where you eving go. Cincinnati Reds losing in against the
Toronto Blue Jays at home yesterday. Twelve nine was the
final score there. Cardinals over the Ages two to one.
The White Sox got to win over the Minnesota Twins
by a score of twelve to three. And I guess
we don't have any real football to look forward to, to,
is there?
Speaker 3 (01:55:18):
Max?
Speaker 1 (01:55:18):
Tonight? I haven't even looked Mark, we're any maxawnt A wins.
Speaker 3 (01:55:20):
Then deeper into the season from Action Ball State's a
forty three and a half point underdog to Auburn ouch.
We got to take the cardinal.
Speaker 1 (01:55:28):
Right with the points. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:55:31):
Shout out to Matt patern Perdue. Jacob Weber, the highest
ranked recruit to commit to the Boilers since Biggie Swanega
nearly a decade ago, Sharpshooters six'. SIX i, think by
all accounts can do more than just strictly catch and,
shoot as transferred To La lumiere this year for his final.
SEASON i Believe nebraska native there So purdue proving they
(01:55:53):
can recruit more than just the big. Man So Luke
Rtle Jacob weber next year's recruiting class for The boilers
here sustained. Success really hard to do college, athletics and
P doue right now seems to be one of the
few programs that have done it better than anybody. Else
and we'll see if that.
Speaker 1 (01:56:12):
Continues matt just keeps on trucking up. THERE i love
the way. YOU i like, though when you Say La lumeira,
better when you Say la louve little. Better, YEAH i
like that a little bit. Better all, right anything else
you want to throw, In, james or we off to break,
Here let's break all, right off to break a little
bit more about the upcoming week one on The National
football the next round eight ninety three five and one
of seven five. Offense in the midst of our twenty
(01:56:35):
twenty Five Fan Morning Show fantasy football, draft what are
you in the tenth or eleventh?
Speaker 5 (01:56:39):
Round?
Speaker 4 (01:56:39):
Now mark something like?
Speaker 1 (01:56:41):
That it is uh we are now in uh pick
one hundred and.
Speaker 4 (01:56:45):
Fourteen one guy is having clearly connection around season and
out of the draft room every five. Seconds probably gotta.
Speaker 3 (01:56:51):
Work probably still on the.
Speaker 1 (01:56:54):
Board WELL i knew he would. BE i don't have
TO i don't have to panic reach on that one.
Speaker 3 (01:56:58):
Said note, There, james, boy you an audible gasp there
during the break when you Heard Zach kiefer saying that
the door is not closed On Anthony richardson with The.
Speaker 5 (01:57:06):
Colts.
Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
YEAH i just disagree with, that mainly because we just
haven't seen. It so Maybe i'm just a. Skeptic but
now you still think he'll get one. More i'd be
stunned if he, doesn't you. Know and that's more based
Off Daniel jones than. ANYTHING i Assume Anthony richardson.
Speaker 3 (01:57:23):
Will get one more chance to start a game for The, colts, Right.
Speaker 2 (01:57:25):
YEAH i believe. That but it's different between being a
starter for a game and being the guy, Again and
that to me is the question because if you get two. Answers,
yeah like if you pivot to him again and you
tell us mid season That Anthony richson is once again
you're starting, quarterback then again we have to question what
plan you. Had and so in, theory if he does
(01:57:48):
work out With Daniel, jones which you, HOPE i, mean
you chose him as your quarterback one you said we
can go out there and win with this. Guy if
that is the hope is if that does happen and
you make the playoffs for the first time in four,
year then in my, mind your question then becomes what
do we do With Daniel? Jones and that is the
bigger question than what we do With Anthony richson in our.
Speaker 3 (01:58:07):
Backup, Yeah so we got a text FROM i think
It's harken texted us earlier And, JAMES i know you
were going kind of back and forth with, him and
he pointed, out you, Know jones is maybe a stopgap
for just this. Season he throws out The richardson plays
has only played fifteen. Games all of THAT i think
has some. Validity the problem THAT i would have is,
this who's to say the next regime is going to
(01:58:30):
Give Anthony richardson a. Chance you, know that next regime
is probably going to want their own guy or their own,
guys and you, know maybe they will have some Intriguing Anthony.
Richardson he'll still be under contract if indeed it plays
out as a new regime is here next, fall so you,
(01:58:52):
know maybe it will be you, know one last atch
effort and you get you, Know kevin O'Connell the famous
clip about him saying To richardson on the, field blah,
blah you have a bright. Future maybe there is A
kevin o'claninell out there the cold, tire and maybe he
wants to Give anthony a, Chance but that likelihood just
seems not going to like for Every Bryce young is
kind of an exception right now for a new regime
(01:59:13):
to come in there and give him a. Chance more
of the exceptions what's happened In tennessee or Will levis's
you know done for in all likelihood and Cam board
has been.
Speaker 2 (01:59:22):
Drafted, yeah and Again i'm going back looking at the
text line and shout out to those who are willing
to engage and. Disagree that is always. WELCOME i think
my biggest thing is not necessarily that ar wouldn't have
a chance to be a starter in THE nfl again
or perhaps a very good, Player but as you kind
of alluded, To, KEVIN i just think that with this,
(01:59:43):
regime how many chances are you going to get for
that opportunity to? Happen for, example you, know two or
three years ago when he got, drafted no one was
really hitting the at least in my, mind the oh my,
gosh they have to absolutely win right now or. Else
that pressure is different now you know you have a,
chance like going to his third. Year how many coaches
(02:00:04):
keep their jobs if they missed for the playoffs their
first three year in division like? This how many gms
get an opportunity to go out and pick another quarterback
or stick with the plan they had when it hasn't worked.
Out that's my only, Thing like if you tell me
this was year one of him kind of going through
the injuries and the benching and the. Maturity, yeah but
he's going into year. Three it's a long time to
(02:00:25):
not really have an answer on the. Guy AND i
get that they could, again you, know pick up his
fifty year, option not pick it, up give them regular.
Extension that's, not you, know going to break the. Bank
but who's to Say Chris ballad and company are the
ones making that decision if it doesn't work out this.
Year that's WHY i think this year is so pivotal
for the. Franchise you went With Daniel, jones you said
(02:00:46):
you can win with. Him you have to do. That
if you, don't why would anyone give you an opportunity
to pivot back To anthony or to pick another. QUARTERBACK
i Wouldn't IF i wasn't in that, POSITION i would
feel like it's time to just start over.
Speaker 1 (02:00:58):
Completely And Chris paller wildest. Dreams do you think there's
a part of him that that lays awake at, night
right before he goes to, sleep and he's just kind of,
like you, know if it doesn't work out With, daniel
and let's say he rolls an ankle in week four
And anthony comes in and he just lights it on
fire and becomes everything The colts thought he was going to.
Be that is like the best case scenario For Chris ballad,
right that his guy ultimately catches fire and becomes what
(02:01:21):
could be thought of as a franchise.
Speaker 4 (02:01:23):
GUY i Think Chris ballard's nightmares Are Kevin bowen and
wide receivers kem boone wide receivers freaking Kem.
Speaker 3 (02:01:29):
Bo, YEAH i, YES i, mean if you're gonna Summarize
Chris baward's best case scenario of the, season The colts
make the playoffs when the division And Anthony richardson somehow
is back in the lineup and looks.
Speaker 5 (02:01:41):
Great. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:01:42):
Easy but here's my other.
Speaker 3 (02:01:43):
Buddy two best case in realistic are, yeah two very different.
Speaker 2 (02:01:47):
Things AND i hear people, say, well you don't have
to Pay Daniel jones if he has a good, year that's,
Fair AND i say good relative to what he had
in the, Past like if he had very, LEAST.
Speaker 3 (02:01:57):
I think he'd have to franchise tag. Him, yeah BUT
i just see a multi year deal out, there.
Speaker 2 (02:02:01):
Because my thing, is, okay If Daniel, jones even if
he has just a pedestrian season when it comes to
good quarterback, play if he's just slightly above, average but
if that's enough to get you to the playoffs for
the first time in four? Years are you really going to?
Go And i'm not saying you got to pay, him
but it is a question because then you got to
go To Quentin, nelson and you got to go To DeForest,
(02:02:22):
buckner and you got to go to the, others Got
Kenny moore and others and tell, them, hey by the,
way that quarterback that we picked up that got you
back to the playoffs the first time in four, Years,
yeah we're gonna get rid of him and just start over.
Again what so like that to me is kind of
the conundrum they found. Themselves AND i know a lot
of it is the hypotheticals what happens if it could,
Happen BUT i think that's a realistic possibility where If
(02:02:42):
Daniel jones is just good enough to get you in the,
playoffs then on one hand you're, Happy but on the other,
hand you're probably, thinking, man, like what do we do,
now and how do you explain that to their aggressive
you guys in your, roster because that's the other. Thing
you're not in a position to necessarily be in, this
like if you're not trying to win now With Daniel
jones or with somebody. Else then what are you doing
(02:03:03):
because all your other players that are good are, older
so you don't really have a chance to necessarily go
and rebuild with another. Quarterback lets're trying to strip the
whole thing. DOWN i, Mean Traverius wars twenty, Nine kennymore is,
thirty The Forrest, BUCKNER i believe it is. Thirty Grover
stewart's at. Thirty like you're trying to win, Now so
that's my biggest.
Speaker 1 (02:03:23):
Thing, yeah they certainly have gotten themselves into a. Pickle
and as most people talk, about it's one of the
three or four worst quarterback situations in THE nfl right.
NOW i think that's objectively fair to.
Speaker 2 (02:03:35):
Say james go yeah and shout out To. Hope i'm
saying his name. Correctly hark on for the back and
forth this, morning very good. STUFF i love people push,
back and they have a.
Speaker 3 (02:03:43):
Senior writing love letters back and forth to each. Other
guys are writing some four and five. Paragraphics, yeah they'll
probably continue this after the.
Speaker 5 (02:03:49):
Show.
Speaker 1 (02:03:50):
Thanks, hey All.
Speaker 2 (02:03:51):
I'm saying IS i didn't receive any inappropriate, pictures you,
know least mine. Is you, Know i'm on first base.
Still but see, AGAIN i had nothing to. Tell that's
what everybody. Say i've, been you, know younger before you,
know you, KNOW i used a couple of, lines but,
yeah you, KNOW i didn't know where this wasn't. Me,
yeah uh.
Speaker 1 (02:04:06):
Huh that's how that that. Goes, Anyway sunday afternoon season
starts for The Indianapolis, colts and we start to maybe
get some answers to all of, this OR i, guess
worst case, scenario we really don't get any answers for
the first several. Weeks Daniel jones is so So colts
maybe win, one lose, one lose, one win, One and
THAT'S i, think as much as, anything what people are
(02:04:28):
afraid of to be sitting, here going through everything they've
gone through and draft like sixteenth or seventeenth against again next, Year.
Speaker 3 (02:04:35):
KEVIN i just drafted justin fields above C. J. Stroud
is that smart.
Speaker 4 (02:04:40):
From a fantasy, Perspective, Yeah it's.
Speaker 3 (02:04:42):
Isn't a while to think in that realm. THOUGH i, Know, Yeah,
jeff you can't be in, purgatory And colts have been
in purgatory way too. Often i'm looking forward to talking
With Zach keeper tomorrow more about that. Story BECAUSE i
think there were a lot of just, great great comments in.
There Peyton manning had a couple of comments that really
stood out to. Me The Alex smith, Analogy. James we've
talked about. This Alex smith was a prominent voice in that,
(02:05:03):
story and that is one name That Chris boward mentioned
a whole lot last week in regards to Both Daniel
jones And Anthony. Rigson he pointed, out excuse, Me smith
himself in that story that he had had seven offensive
coordinators in his first seven years of. Football so, again
when you're trying to project out, here, hey Could Anthony
(02:05:23):
richardson be An Alex? Smith you know that's What, chris you,
know more or less said last. Week you, know, Again
anthony hasn't had the seven different offensive coordinators or the
three different you, Know mark noses full, Well Caleb williams
has had a lot of revolving to around.
Speaker 2 (02:05:37):
Him and that, MATTERS i Think Bryce Young so you.
Speaker 3 (02:05:40):
Know that it's another aspect to. It SO i thought
it was a really good, piece and we will have
Zach on and Also Mark Jason hammer will join us correct.
Tomorrow we'll get into Some thursday picks like we did last.
Year that's a plan With Jason. Hammer have to get
into the.
Speaker 4 (02:05:55):
Room there's not.
Speaker 3 (02:05:55):
Enough mike's made us a, lot a lot of doe
last year on his Mainly thursday night. Picks he was
great for. Us so he'll get a set For eagles
And cowboys tomorrow and anything else that stands out from the.
Speaker 1 (02:06:07):
Weekend all, right we got you covered one way or the,
other and we'll finish up, strong including the details On
Mark straft coming up next on ninety three. Five and, well.
Speaker 2 (02:06:15):
Welcome back to Go.
Speaker 1 (02:06:16):
James here we. ARE i just wanted to listen to
this song for a. Minute, yeah, well how come if
it's if it's song you're grooven, Too we're, good But
i'm grooving to it and jump.
Speaker 2 (02:06:25):
In, Man well you were taking a. While you weren't
singing along and to participate because.
Speaker 1 (02:06:30):
No one in the world wants to hear me sing,
Ever i've been told that by many many. Friends don't just.
Speaker 2 (02:06:39):
Don't we gotta get you to land on the couches.
Speaker 1 (02:06:40):
Something Probably i'll have to attend one of beers With. Bowen's.
Maybe maybe at that point in TIME i get enough
of those going. On, Yeah i'm up for. It anytime you.
Are here's WHAT i do know we will have for
the champion of this, sleep we will have one of
those world wrestling entertainment type. BELTS i know that for a.
Fact BUT i So i'm thinking is that?
Speaker 4 (02:07:01):
Price Because i'm going all, IN i.
Speaker 3 (02:07:03):
Was going to say Tell mark that for the, draft,
right he would have rigged it even.
Speaker 1 (02:07:07):
More and then for for second, prize the winner will
also be able to choose either an in studio experience
or some premium tickets to one of our fine sporting
events around. Here in whichever the winner doesn't choose in
that second, place which is all gonna be.
Speaker 4 (02:07:22):
Pick in studio over a premium. Line you need to.
Speaker 1 (02:07:26):
Get to hang out With Kevin bowen And James boyd
all morning. Long come, on, boy.
Speaker 4 (02:07:32):
That might be the that might be the last place
finish gets that.
Speaker 1 (02:07:35):
Prize should we should have a punishment for last? Place?
Speaker 3 (02:07:40):
SHOULD i, Say i'll probably just, apologize.
Speaker 2 (02:07:42):
You, know speed.
Speaker 4 (02:07:43):
OUT i was gonna, SAY i would, say if any
of the three of us on the show coming, last
there needs to be a punishment of some sort a
speedo lap around the circle or something of.
Speaker 1 (02:07:54):
THAT. ILK i just can't.
Speaker 3 (02:07:55):
Believe mark complimented my.
Speaker 1 (02:07:57):
TEAM i haven't looked.
Speaker 2 (02:07:58):
RECENTLY i have to see how you're. Doing oh it
sounds like he's leaning back towards the. Hate, yes, no
nould be your natural.
Speaker 3 (02:08:04):
Self who are your first three, Picks? KEVIN i exited out.
ALREADY i THINK i Picked Henry Nico. Collins it Was Nico,
Collins Derrick, henry and we got Picked omari And. Hampton
the rookie for The. Chargers he seems to be. ONE i,
mean Doesn't harball just want to run? It, yeah he's
an old school, guy WHICH i GUESS i didn't really
(02:08:24):
think that through because THEN i Drafted herbert.
Speaker 1 (02:08:26):
Too. Mm there you.
Speaker 3 (02:08:28):
GO i mean this explains, why, again there's no worse
fantasy football player than. ME i Stink i'm worse than The.
Speaker 1 (02:08:36):
REDS i never liked my teams, ever, ever, Ever.
Speaker 3 (02:08:40):
Thank you everybody joined the.
Speaker 1 (02:08:41):
League, yeah who who'd you end up?
Speaker 5 (02:08:43):
With the?
Speaker 4 (02:08:44):
SECOND i Took Saquon barkley and THEN i followed that
back up With Brian Thomas junior and Then Kyen williams as.
Well so kind of going to a little running back heavy.
Early BUT i think that's, UH i think that's the
way to.
Speaker 1 (02:08:58):
Go it's problem, me not a bad. IDEA i ended
up Going Bijon robinson with my first, PICK A. J
brown with my, second AND i had to go wide,
receiver best available at that point in time because it
was gonna be a long time BEFORE i picked. AGAIN
i Went terry. McLaurin, WELL i Think jayden And daniels
and he are gonna have a big year this. YEAR
i am on the, clock and with my last pick
of the, draft anybody want to guess, anybody anybody it
(02:09:23):
is Ad. Mitchell, well get that he's off the boat
because nobody else is going to take. Him so that's.
True this is this is gonna be fun for.
Speaker 4 (02:09:29):
Me sleeper pick of the, year steal the second.
Speaker 1 (02:09:32):
Half i'm telling you second half of the.
Speaker 4 (02:09:33):
Season he's Gonna we're doing the Ad mitchell catch tracker
during the. Season we have to do.
Speaker 2 (02:09:38):
That, yes that's gonna be rickly, updates uh coming next.
Speaker 1 (02:09:43):
Month every player in THE nfl should have somebody that
believes in them as much AS i believe In Adie.
Mitchell that's.
Speaker 5 (02:09:47):
True it's.
Speaker 2 (02:09:48):
True kevin o'connelly said that about, Quarterbacks SO.
Speaker 1 (02:09:50):
I THOUGHT i thought he had a fantastic That Zach
keith for. Piece he had a fantastic quote about teams
fell young quarterbacks far more often than the young quarterbacks
failed teams yes on The Rich.
Speaker 2 (02:10:00):
Eisen, show And zach was saying on a different podcast
that comment sparked his idea to kind of pursue that
story on why the young quarterbacks don't work out what
they should in. Theory and so it's Fascinating peace AND
i encourage you all to check it out after our.
Speaker 3 (02:10:15):
Show this From Adam kevin's team sounds. AWFUL whoa, wow
thank You adam for on right. AFTER i appreciate.
Speaker 4 (02:10:22):
THAT i don't, KNOW i like. It maybe that's just.
Speaker 1 (02:10:26):
ME i, WELL i never Like i'm the one guy
walk away from every draft only with fear of missing.
Out OH i wish i'd have had. THAT i could
have done.
Speaker 4 (02:10:36):
THAT i think it'll be, Okay, kevin you will be
running around The.
Speaker 1 (02:10:39):
SPEEDO i don't.
Speaker 3 (02:10:40):
Think we got this question here From. Chez could you
guys do a segment on wageram. Terms, yeah it's. Funny
you know we're gonna Have Jase tammer on tomorrow to
pick some. GAMES i, realize like not everybody speaks in,
like the, hell what does plus two thirty? Mean so you,
know when we, say you know, LINES i think it's pretty.
Straightforward Of, hey The colts right now are a one
(02:11:01):
point favorite For, Sunday like that is pretty. Straightforward but
if you were to say The colts are plus two
fifty to make the, playoffs that is foreign to a
lot of. People, basically plus two to fifty means if
you bet ten, dollars you win that, bet you get
twenty five dollars on top of your, ten right. There
(02:11:21):
so those are when we talk about, odds that's what
you'd be looking. At SO i don't. KNOW i don't
think we talk a ton a ton on the wagering gambling,
scale but when we, DO i try to make sure
that we throw in kind of what the pluses and
the minuses mean of. It but, yes The colts are
A week one favorite here over The Miami, dolphins AND
i believe it's one of the lower over unders of the.
(02:11:43):
WEEK i want to, say it's like hovering around forty
six forty.
Speaker 5 (02:11:45):
Seven.
Speaker 1 (02:11:47):
YEAH I i'm trying to think of the Best colts
bets for the, year AND i would probably go with
the over under on wins BECAUSE i still think that
there's enough around whatever quarterback is playing that this team
should win eight nine, games and maybe with a break
along the, way who. Knows but there's a lot of
(02:12:08):
talent around this. TEAM i like what they've done defensively
to solidify. Things i'm a little bit worried about do
they have enough edge, rush But i'm hopeful we'll. See
BUT i really like their compliment of offensive weapons around the.
Speaker 3 (02:12:21):
Quarterback, YEAH i mean seven and a. Half it's the over.
Under if you made me pick one of the, OTHER
i would pick the. Over if you literally, said all,
right seven and a half, games you have to pick
one or the. Other over it's WHY i like, it
or under, SEVEN i would go. OVER i don't say
it with an abundance of. CONFIDENCE i don't necessarily want
to go into my bank accounts and use that. Money
(02:12:44):
but if you've made.
Speaker 2 (02:12:45):
Me maddie's gonna be, like what are you?
Speaker 3 (02:12:46):
Doing pick one or the? OTHER i go. There it's a.
Question we Asked Stephen holder, earlier And i'll ask you
two right. Now better Chance colt's draft in the top
eight of the draft or the bottom. Eight, basically do
you think get a better chance they are one of
the worst eight teams in the league or their division.
WINNER i do one of the final eight.
Speaker 1 (02:13:04):
Standing, YEAH i don't think they're one of the final eight,
Standings So i'll probably say in the first eight because
if things go terribly, wrong that's Probably.
Speaker 3 (02:13:13):
Wait you just really changed your.
Speaker 1 (02:13:14):
Twos i'm just saying they're not one of the top eight.
Teams i've never said eleven wins ever came out of my.
Mouth mark check.
Speaker 4 (02:13:25):
You have that left to, dig.
Speaker 2 (02:13:29):
So sort of answer your. QUESTION i do think they
have a better chance to win the division because they
don't really bought them, out AND i think that they're
coaching has been good enough to kind of absorb some
of the key. ABSENCES i, mean let's not forget beyond
the quarterback. Play Jonathan taylor was not really healthy in
twenty twenty. Three he was healthier last, year but he's
still missing a handful of, games OR i want to
(02:13:50):
a handful OF i think missed three games last. Year
so they've been able to navigate some of these absences
and still be competitive and do just enough, to you,
know give you some hope and then kind of snatch
away from you at the end when they don't complete
the task of making the. Playoffs BUT i think the
not the Cas i'm, sorry The colts are going to
be right in the.
Speaker 4 (02:14:10):
Mix CAN i give you A colts, play possibly season long?
Speaker 8 (02:14:14):
Play?
Speaker 4 (02:14:14):
Sure Jonathan taylor leading rusher in THE. Nfl he's currently
fourth at plus eight. Hundred the leaders Are Saquon, Barkley Derek,
henry B John. ROBINSON i Think Jonathan taylor far and
away is the lead back and The. Colts he's gonna
get a lot of. Work plus eight. HUNDRED i think that's.
Speaker 3 (02:14:33):
Annually one of the harder props mark because which is
it all takes one? Injury, OH i, know.
Speaker 1 (02:14:38):
But you missed two. Games barkley has a lot of.
Speaker 4 (02:14:43):
Wear and tear From emery's not getting any.
Speaker 2 (02:14:46):
Younger you can never, Really we're not supposed to. Say
kwan's an alien recently got voted number one in the
well like player rankings or. Whatever but usually when players
get that many touches any, year the next year they're banged.
Up it happens almost. ALWAYS i will seem like a.
Science SO i don't hate that.
Speaker 1 (02:15:02):
Bet unless You're Derek. Henry you're just built like a freight.
Speaker 2 (02:15:05):
Train, yeah and again he's an. Alien he's not from.
Speaker 5 (02:15:09):
Here all.
Speaker 1 (02:15:10):
Right that will wrap it up for us. Today thanks

in our fantasy football draft or indulging us and talking
about that and how ridiculous. Ridiculous we are also Thank
