Speaker 1 (00:16):
You're listening to I Love this TV show The Golden Girls.
The Golden Girls Season six, Episode eighteen, Older and Wiser,
original air date February sixteenth, nineteen ninety one. In this episode,

(00:36):
it's Sophia's first day as the activities director at a
retirement home. Dorothy is excited for Sophia to do this.
She does tell her matching shoes would be nice. Dorothy
expresses her concerns this isn't actually a job, but instead
a way to get Sophia to recover from the flu.

(00:57):
The girls discuss lies. Blanche comes back from the drug store,
exciting she's going to be a model. Dorothy reminds her
what happened the last time a photographer discovered her. Dorothy
deflates her mood by telling her that her grandson called
and he got his driver's license. Dorothy takes Sophia to

(01:18):
her new job, mister Porter, who runs the retirement home.
As a memory lapse regarding Sophia in her new position.
That night, Sophia is upset about the fact that some
of the residents just sat in front of the TV
for eight hours straight without moving. She then talks about
how good it was at Shady Pine's. Dorothy voices her

(01:41):
surprise and Sophia quickly changes the subject. Blanche and Rose
come back from the photo shoot. Blanche's unhappy as they're
only using her face while they use Rose's hands. Dorothy
tries cheering Blanche up with false platitudes, but Blanche appreciates

(02:01):
them and they help a little. Meanwhile, Rose realizes just
how hung up on her looks Blanche really is, and
we learned she got struck by lightning. Sophia comes back
from work. She's given them an activity to write to
service men who don't have anyone, but mister Porter has

(02:22):
complained to Dorothy about it. The next day, Dorothy races
to Cypress Grove. Everyone is gone, including her mother. Mister
Porter is freaking out. When they return, they learn they
all went for a cappuccino. The truth comes out about
why Sophia is there, and she is both furious and hurt.

(02:44):
Back at the house, Sophia is pulling a gilt trick
on Dorothy by doing what she wanted. She's just sitting
and watching TV. The Penny Saver finally arrives, but no
one is happy. Blanche's face and wrote Jo's hands have
been aged and a bunch of liver spots have been
at it. They look like Dalmatians. Now, Blanche comes up

(03:09):
with an idea to go and take all of the
Penny Savers from as many porches as they can find. Now,
Dorothy feels bad about Sophia as she is acting like
the people at Cypress Grove. Blanche tells a story about
Clayton's birth and her father going on probation. Sophia goes
back to Cypress Grove. They all have a good time.

(03:31):
They tell Sophia they missed her Back at the house.
They discuss how they had to adapt the penny Saver
retrieval plan, but they also discover Sophia is missing at
Cypress Grove. They are all doing the hokey pokey. Dorothy
and mister Porter converge on Cypress Grove at the same time.

(03:51):
He is furious. Mister Lewis speaks and shocks everyone. It's
pointed out that mister Porter isn't listening to the residents,
and Dorothy and Sophia agreed to work together as a
team to keep Sophia lively and healthy. Favorite quote Dorothy,

(04:14):
oh ma, you look adorable, Sophia adorable. I want to
look aggressive, powerful, like a corporate killer, Dorothy. Lose the hat, Dorothy,
And oh, like you never told a lie. Rose. That's right,
I've never told a lie. Well, just once, when I
snuck out a class to go to the movies. Dorothy.

(04:35):
That's not much of a lie. Rose. That's what I thought, too.
Turned out to be the day they taught everything, Dorothy.
The final piece of the puzzle, Blanche. I was discovered
by a print ad photographer and the shoots today, Dorothy. Oh, Blanche,
haven't you hate enough problems with photographers? Remember the last time. Sure,

(04:57):
the pictures turned out fine, but it cost your friend
his party's nomination.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Blanche.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Oh, girls, what a glorious day. I just feel so
pretty and alive and young as a teenager. Dorothy. Oh,
that's terrific. By the way, you got a call this
morning from your grandson. He got his driver's license, mister Porter.
Whatever you do, don't dance with him. He'll put the
moves on anybody. Sophia, Smoky, I want you to meet

(05:26):
my daughter. Rose. Yeah, Blanche, so what so life threw
the dumb country girl of Crumb for once. I mean,
you're sexy and beautiful all the time. Let's face it,
you have Betty Davis eyes and Freddy Krueger hands. Rose,
can you believe it? I'm beginning to think Blanche has
hung up on her looks. Dorothy, Boy, you don't need

(05:49):
lightning to strike you, Rose. No, thanks, not again. Once
was enough, Dorothy, an extra piece of the puzzle. Sophia,
I'm I'm not going to sit here while people are
forced to throw in the towel. Have you ever seen
what happens to a person when their brain is allowed
to disintegrate and their minds turned completely to mush, Sophia,

(06:13):
Nobody bothered to consult me about what was for my
own good So goodbye mister Porter, goodbye Dorothy. Thank you
both for making me look like an old fool. Blanche. Oh, Dorothy,
did you and Sophia patch things up? Dorothy? Ah, she's
in her room napping. You know, it's so ironic. I
sent her to that home and there she was vital

(06:35):
and happy. Now she's here, and yes she's resting, but
she's behaving like those people at Cypress Grove, camping in
front of the TV all day long. I definitely give
where Dorothy is coming from in this episode. She just
wants her mom to recover. You know, Sylphia's in her eighties.

(07:00):
She wants to still have a long time with her,
and it is a challenge. As you get older, your
immune system is not as good, your health is not
as good. You know, your body is just older and
it's tired, and losing a parent is scary.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Now.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
It's one thing if it happens when you're young and
you're too young to really remember much anymore. But at
the same time, if you're in your forties, you're in
your fifties, you're in your sixties, You've had all these
years of your life with your parents, and now the
reality is thinking in that this could be coming to
an end. It's really really frightening. Now. I do think

(07:37):
that Dorothy should have simply had a conversation with Sophia.
She just kept an eye on her, make sure she's okay,
listen to what she's saying. Sophia is old, but she's
not stupid, she's not incompetent. She's fully aware what's going
on in her body, with her body and what's going
on around her, and so it could have been handled

(07:59):
in a different way. Definitely, you know, it's one thing
if your parent doesn't want to cooperate with you, it's
another if they are willing to work with you so
that you can both be on the same page, both communicate.
Communication is very important. You know your older parent does
not want to lose their independence and their ability to

(08:19):
make their own choices. Sometimes out of fear as your
as a child, you become overbearing, you become pushy, you
take away their break to make their own choices, and
you start doing it for them, even if they're still capable.
But it's out of a place of fear because you
don't want to lose them. So it is a balancing
act and it is delicate, but if you work at it,

(08:43):
it will work. Thanks for tuning in to the I
