Who is it the fat Man?And now here's the Fat Man in
(02:54):
Murder Shows of Cards? This onebegan at the front door of the old
clock right ment. It was agloomy, dark looking place, sitting back
in the path, a lot oftrees around, and the rain that night
didn't help the preference. I mean, I don't usually make calls from the
(03:15):
country at night, but Scott Rightshad a lot of dough. The old
lady had been in system. AfterI had knocked a couple of times,
the door was opened by a typicallooking English buckler, stripe fans and all.
Only this guy didn't talk a bitlike a buffler. Should I reckon
you, the detective? There's ashow Maning ain't too smart coming out here,
(03:38):
but maybe you've got something there.Suppose you tell Missuscott right, the
fat Man is here. She sentfor me to come out right away.
I know she send for you,but it's best not to burt into other
folks business. You're likely to getin trouble. But here in the hall,
I'll tell you've come. Thanks. You've got to listen to me,
(04:03):
mister. Please, you know thedetected my mother send who don't you suppose
you do the talking? My mother? What else? She gets funny ideas?
Sometimes she's old and I can't sheimagine saying what's following. I don't
know exactly. I'm afraid she's sick. She We've got to help me.
You will help me, won't you. We're in a minute, sister,
slow down. But you're afraid ofI'm not afraid of anything. Where did
(04:24):
your mother send for me? I'msure, Tony, you mustn't believe everything
she says. My whole future dependsalso, Cleave, Please be careful.
I guess you're running. You guessright. What's your message for me?
My mother doesn't know what she's doing. Have you asked much? You're getting
(04:45):
your car and drive back to townright away. We can't right to know
how to handle our own affairs.Your sister doesn't seem to think so.
My sisters lay been talking. Iremember raining. I wanted you to mind
your own business. Better quip yep, it's now roy or you more will
delights out? Are you my mothera better watch a steppa. She won't
be wailing anybody anymore. She didn'the here he is? Need that dog,
(05:19):
Slim and get on downstairs. Don'twant nobody left, not a tea
hole? Has it gone yet? He's gone good? I'm over here,
young man, and sit down.I want to look at you. You're
a fat man, all right.Don't worry. It ain't the fact that
(05:40):
bothered me. Just what is botheringhim? Is this cardwright? See that
gun laying on my driver. I'mgonna count three, get it and shoot
the tea out of the door behindyou. Don't worry about the door or
the noise. One. Who hopeSlim was listening around the corner? I
(06:08):
reckon, you'll do mister run in, I'll do all right? Miss god
right? I what's the job?Who let chair closer? Good? Ever?
Hear of my husband? A whyCartwright? Yeah? He was a
pretty wealthy man. And you probablyknow about him dying last week. I
reading the paper. He died ofa heart attack. I'm sorry, A
(06:29):
why didn't die of a heart attack. Mister Lonnon, what did he die
from? Right? He had awee hard all right, but it wasn't
a stroke of donny mean what somethanysaw? What makes you think? So
this playing card? He ain't aspade? You know what that means?
Fortune teller say it means dead? No, fortune teller, delve a why
(06:54):
that ain't a spade? Here?Read this old newspaper clippon. All right,
they'll bugle. June twelve, nineteentwenty six, Ra of Border disappears.
It has been three months now sincethe daringholder of the llen g Express,
trained by Ahanc and his band ofespredos. For many months, Texas
(07:15):
was terrorized by this gang who wascalling card the ace of spades, became
a synonym for fear, robbery, and murder. Then suddenly, as if
the earth had literally swallowed him up, HNC and his gang disappeared. Oh,
your husband was Ahancy. That's right. He stole the entire loot of
the gang, and swimming me helpedhim. We all come east together with
(07:39):
over four hundred thousand dollars in asuitcase. And you've kept that secret all
these years. We kept it toourselves. Children never knew the truth.
Nobody never knew until I told youtonight, nobody except the man who left
the Ace of Spade. There wasonly one of the Yancy's old gang that
could have outlived whiskey guns on arope. He was the one with old
(08:00):
Crooked Nose. He why lived inmortal terror that some day he finds I'm
worried about it's my kids, Leeand Roy. Lee's in love with a
nice boy, and she's gonna marryhim. I think he'd marry her if
he knew her old man was AceYancy. What do you want me to
do? Find Crooked Nose and buyhim off. If you can, I'll
(08:22):
give him more than we cook andone have you won buy and I'll have
to kill him when it comes back. What makes you think he's coming back?
This came to me through the mailat the morning, by an envelope
inside another. Is either him orme is next? Unless you can get
to him before he gets here.Crooked Nose may be a devil, but
(08:45):
he'd never shoot nobody in the back. You're wrong with his Cardwright. I
guess you're not next after all,and scream and have been far from my
house, so we wouldn't have heardit. He had come from right out
here, and it was Lee hitthat devil's loose around here, and he
saw my gol screaming. I thought, well, I was afraid with mother.
(09:13):
Lee. We gotta find a clewith have a hand the tree just
a minute, miss card right.Oh, I didn't see you you scream
a minute ago? Yes I did. I'm sorry. Maybe you're doing out
here in the rain. I wassitting in the library when I thought I
(09:33):
saw somebody moving around outside the window. And then I saw a figure,
a man standing down here in thepark. You look suspicious. Why didn't
you call somebody? I don't know. Yes, it was because I thought
you thought you recognized Yes, Ithought it was slim. It came out
to see what I was doing. And then suddenly a man sprang out from
behind a tree and rushed past me. He startled me, and I guess
(09:56):
I screamed, did you recognize aman? No? No, it happens
so quickly. But he was tall, a big man. It must have
been him. Oh, mother,And just the way you are and keep
talking, what are you gonna do? I'm going to find out who it
is. What did you get upslow and turn around with your hands up?
(10:16):
I was wordering where you were almostkind even minute the goal, but
he got a word your hands up, slim You ain't thinking? Why were
you hiding behind that bush? Iwasn't hiding. What fact you're holding in
your hand? It's a card,mister d I want to talk to him
(10:37):
alone. The rest of you leaveus here in the library a minute,
but then here talking to be done. I'm gonna do it. You're gonna
do what I tell you. I'mworking for your mother. You may be
in danger, and you maybe too. I got a right to know what
all this is about. You mightfind out two of them you expect.
Unless you do if I tell you, come only and you too, Lord
are talking. I told you too. I don't believe. I've seen somebody
(11:01):
moving around down by the Great Barbour, and I went down to see what
he was doing. What was hedoing? I've seen him jump up from
behind that bush and start running. He dropped something and I was just being
over to pick it up when youcame up. He jumped at Dick.
A card you got in your head? Quick, lying, slim us no
good as spade is missing from thisdeck, the one you had in your
hand. I'm telling the truth.I found those cards. If you're watching
(11:24):
the foot AfterAll, look the faceof the window. It's a man with
a crooked nose the window. Verycareful way of step. The rain has
made the ground so soft and madea footprint china fresh right round on the
ground. Look, Oh, they'ma footprint, sure enough. Big ones
(11:48):
too, mus He was wearing overshoes at the lashes and hen the staminas
toes to see in the window. He was a big man, and a
tall one anyway, crooked nose, had big feet, really big ones,
did him, Prince leading any direction? The rains watched him for the all
away, except right here under thewindow, where he stood on the looks
of the ground, though, I'dsay headed back toward the garage when he
(12:11):
left here. Come on, you'regonna be sorry he mixed into this before
you're journe and being paper money don'tmean nurhing, I know. Yeah.
Did you know that missus Cartwright gotNASA spades in the mail today? She
did it. That means we gotto get him before he goes any further.
That was the mark. And thendeath to anybody who got it.
He's out to do us all inand if I know Crooked knows, he
(12:33):
ain't gonna stop till he's done it. Listen, what's that open the guards
door? Oh, don't try lightin my eyes? Jim, Who is
the File's Lee's bow, Jim,Damny happily of that name. What are
you doing here, Jim? We'vegot to stop him. He's gonna hurt
Lee. Oh my head. Somebodyhit me on the back of the head.
(12:56):
Oh, it's a triumphant. Idon't know. I followed him here
to the house tonight. Who didyou follow? Who are you? He
is a detective. Jimmy's helping himout. Who did you follow on a
while? Please in trouble? Itwas something about her dad and in the
past. Today I followed her.She lit this guy and then they talked
a while, and then she leftand you tailed him. Yeah, yeah,
(13:18):
that's right. I followed him outhere tonight. He went around the
corner of the house towards the garage. I came up fast, and all
of a sudden, I got iton the head. I just came too.
You're lucky. I came to it. Oh, with a big man
like crookodd nos lugging him big man. He wasn't a big man. He
was a little man. You've gotto tell the truth, Lee, who
(13:43):
was this little guy? Little guy? I'll ask my question, Troy was
the black man in your leave?Yes? Yes, he wanted money.
He said it was about Dad.Something happened a long time ago out in
Texas. He said that you've gota prop mother. If he talked you
on Slim and Dad? Where didthey contact you about? Ten days ago?
(14:03):
Was before Dad died and you gavehim money? Yes, but he
wanted more. I told him thatI tried to give it. Difty called
me here and told me to meof to day, so I did.
Lady wouldn't keep quiet longer. Andif I got more money, I was
to meet him at midnight and giveit to him. Where are you going
to meet him? Telling me,oh, great father? But two of
(14:24):
them? Then? What do youmean? I didn't know, I didn't
get anybody knew it. I don'tknow what that didn't take us before?
But I don't know anything anymore. What are you talking about? It?
All the time? Lee was playingoff and I'm too a fool, I
am? You were panel? Whatlittle man. I spent off your big
man a nine min o'clock and nose. The real stuff will be waiting at
(15:09):
the arbors. Leave ever then goesto there's working together. Don't take no
chances with crew good nose, eventhat this man and the gun. I
ever seen him, missus cruleas Samhonest old worry man and not that old
woman. He's big than most men, the way you royal with hold it
(15:31):
wheezy olbor by the hands seeing him, Yeah, I see him. We
in the arbor, sitting with hisback to me. The little guy.
Easy. Now, I'm gonna moveup right behind him. Okay, if
you've got a gun dropping, putyour hands up, get your hands off
(15:52):
like him trying to lie on himfrom now then, mister, get up
flow. They can't get off hisdad. Yeah, you know, I'm
who look at his face? Msme? Was he one of the old
Asia Spade gang? I know thatlittle rat face? Anyway, I don't
understand it. Who could have donehim in? Your friend crocod knows,
(16:15):
how do you know? Look intohis coat another as of spades. No,
it's late McKenzie, but this isimportant. I want you to come
yourself. Never mind that indoors.I tell you it's been one murder hit
the night, and there maybe more. He'll lose somewhere on the ground of
(16:37):
this estate. Okay, okay,I'll get out there soon as I can.
Bring some good men with you andthrow a guard round the ground.
Then you come into the house.I'll be waiting for you, mister,
and hurry McKenzie, allry, okay, mister ring. My mother has disappeared
(17:00):
and told your mother to stay inthe library. Of the others. Nobody
tells mother anything to them for therest of them. Now, Jim Roy
and Slim without side, look forand I can get you. You've got
to find a past. Wait aminute, that chuck came from the cellar.
Come on quick, hurry, that'sthe past. You may still be
(17:22):
down there. Lighten that door, open the door, and then jump back
out of the the light. Don'tlook me, Listen to me yourself.
(17:52):
He got his caright, friend shouton the back. I must why did
you kill her? Why are youbecause you're chasing That happened a long time
ago. Let's none left. Whathappened? Good lord? Oh who did
(18:15):
it? He's coming a young forhim. When I heard Lee stream.
Don't let him come down here.Take me upstairs, and the three of
you stay in the library and keepaway from the window you think lead to
I don't know, but I'm notgonna take any more chances are. You
better stay here with me a minutewhen I want to look around the cellar.
Come on. She must have beenleaning over this tool bench when he
(18:37):
got her. He went out tothat open basement window over there. What
incarnation was he doing here in thiscellar when she found me? He wasn't
in the cellar. She came downhere for some reason, and he followed
it. Evidently she didn't even hearhim. She was looking at something here
on this bench. W She waslooking for something None bench the journey names
(18:59):
too, Patty, And if youpieces the board, he was looking for
something maybe crooked nose. Choke it, mister pollg and shut him the stairs.
You see how the bullet went inthe back of an angle. Her
gun wasn't fired. She's still holdingin my hand. Looks like me and
crooked nose. He's gonna have ashowdown pretty soon. You're afraid of it.
I ain't pulled a gun in along time, but ricking he ain't
(19:22):
too sky good because I'm gonna seta trap for this guy, and you're
going to be the bait. Ihope you'll know what you're doing. Run
him. I know what I'm doing. Mcknvy. You're taking a chance on
Slim's life. He doesn't mind. You're taking chances on it before. But
it's in the same putting him outthere in the kitchen all alone. You
(19:45):
said yourself, the killer is afterSlim next, That's what I said.
But you don't really believe it.Maybe I don't like it. Run you,
I do, and I'm gonna capturekiller for you. I got metal
station all around the place. Whyis going to play a little waiting game?
Jim royan Lee are in the library. I want you to go in
(20:06):
there with them. Not even allthis Crooked Nose are still around. Maybe
he took off after killing the oldlady, he's still around. Crooked Nose
is a very thorough guy and hisjob isn't finished yet. But he must
know this. Cops all around theplace, and what I've heard about Crooked
Nose cops don't bother him at all. I'm going to the kitchen. Westland's
waiting. Where are you going towait. I'm going to wait where I
(20:27):
can do the most good. Youall get Flim ready for him? Okay,
I remember, you've got to trustme in this thing. I trust
you, mister, and this isthe only way to trap him. I
eat a fred and don't forget Slim. If you have to shoot, shoot
(20:48):
the kettle. We've been sitting heremillion hour. Nothing's happened. What does
this fatman think he's doing? Well? Doesn't mean people have nerves and feelings.
My mother's body flied on there inthe cellar and he's playing game.
Does take it easy? And I'veknown brand Run you know, a long
time, and what he does usuallymakes sense. Yeah, but it seems
(21:10):
pretty obvious that cooked nos is gone. And the longer we sit here,
the father way he's gonna get anyway, Why doesn't he come back? You
don't. I don't suppose nothing.I think Running knows what he's doing,
and I'm willing to play along withhim. Plant wait much longer. Oh,
this is ridiculous. That killing gone, and he won't be bad.
You're gonna stay right here, allof him until I tell you you can
(21:32):
go. Maybe you don't realize ifbut your lives are in danger. Why
doesn't he come then? Why don'the come down? I'm showing himself.
Wait, you're getting my mind nerves. Why don't we put the blinds done?
Why don't just sit and get likeducks on a lot? I'm waiting
to get shot. Why don't youquit yellow and shut up? You're getting
the mind nerves. I don't wantto get shot anymore. And he's gone.
(21:52):
I can't he's gone. Take iteasy, boy, take it easy
to get jumping. Look did youget him? I don't think so.
There he goes down on the garage. Come on, just get rid of
(22:14):
the garage. Hold a minute, where's miss Cartwright? Well, I think
you better get back in the house. No, no, she's safer with
us. He might double back andget away from it. All right,
have a play behind us? Hestarts shooting, dropped to the ground and
lie still. He's in the garage. Hey there, all right? What
(22:37):
do we do? Can't do nothing? How don't you worry about that?
He'll come out? All right?Where you meet? I got a tear
gas bomb here. I'll talk tohim through the door. You'll come out.
I stand back by the doors. Here goes Wait no, you're in
the Eric's smart to come out withyour hands up. That's tear gas.
(23:00):
He don't do me. McKenzie running, But what are you doing in there?
The killers in there? I sawhim going. The killers not in
there, Yeah, but I sawhim going. He stuck his face in
the window. He followed him.He ran in the garage. Must be
in there running. Shine your lighton me, McKenzie, the killer my
doors, I say, McKenzie,Okay, rocket nose, you're running,
(23:23):
but your face that No, youMcKenzie a phony nose. There isn't any
crocket nose. There never was,at least there hadn't be in for a
lot of years. Your hands, there's our killer. Yeah, I killed
both of them. Now I'm gonnafinish my job. Yeah, pretty no,
I don't my hand. But you'renot smart enough. I told you
(23:47):
didn't stay out of this business, and you didn't know. You're gonna be
sorry. Why did you do it? Right? Because I hate him?
I hate him all. They're gonnasend a lot of money on Lee.
When she married you needed money, didn't you roy a lot of money?
Spose? I No, I'm gonnaget it. You're crazy like a fox.
I'm crazy. That's what my oldman told me. That's crazy too.
(24:08):
You're gonna have me put away.I put him only you should have
seen a look on his face whenI look in at his window. You
know he thought that crooked nof hasfinally found him. You are insane.
Shut up keeping I'm not too talkingyou. You aren't gonna lick me after
(24:29):
all, crooked. No, he'sgonna kill all of you and then he's
gonna disappear. Here you like, that's fat man, that's you're here again.
Now I'm gonna kill you one ofthe time. You ain't got it
all yet, Roy, ain't youforgetting me? Keeps in and right like
you are, Roy, my gunsbeing pointing street at your back. Ever
since you're starting talking. Now,I got a little talk, a little
(24:51):
told I'm gonna move and you're agun. I try to kill you.
Fucking you shouldn't in a second.You're gonna get a change. I'm a
friend. This wasn't part about why. I'm sorry, mister run him,
but it's fast this way. Ihave bad to you to say, Potto,
who are you talking about? Tokill you? John? That I
ain't never shot nobody in the back, Come around quick and come around shooting?
(25:19):
Oh how do you get your flamerin this job making? What about
him? We got him? Writein my heart. We've got to get
you to a doctor. Flam.I think you know you? Oh he
answer him? Here, Listen tome, honey, you know me?
(25:41):
Good thing come out of its missedforget talk, should be happy my money,
get rid of it. It ain'ttoo good. Nothing the trouble.
Promise me, I'll misten to you. I promise Sam. He's dead,
(26:07):
Miss Carkwright. All you can dofor him now is to keep that promise.
Oh are you sure took a chanceputting on that phony nose and letting
me shoot out? You throw thewonder on him? I knew you couldn't
hit me, McKenzie. You neverhit anything yet that you aim that?
(26:29):
Oh yeah, when's your first tombleof the truth on him? When they
found the old lady dead in thebasement, I don't see how that told
you anything. I knew she waslooking for something on that workband. She
guessed the truth about Roy posing acrooked nose. She was checking up on
the putty. That's where he gotthe putty to make a phony nose.
And Roy followed her and saw thatshe was on the right track. That's
(26:52):
right, so he shot her inthe back. That was his worst mistake.
How are you maining, oh,missus Carr? I told me earlier
the crooked nose was a rat,but he'd never shoot anybody in the back.
That's when I decided there wasn't reallyany crooked nose at all. What
about the little guy Snake? Heand Roy made a deal, but Snake
double crossed in by black naming Leeon the side, so Roy had to
(27:15):
kill him. I wonder what willhappen to Lee. She's gonna marry Edney,
and she's going to give all theCarpwright money to charity. That Slim
was quite a guy who was right. Too hot. Money always burns your
fingers. The Cartwrights too nice agirl to go through life with scorch fen
(27:37):
in, Mackenzie, you've got anythingto eat in your pocket? Oh?
That's that, it seems. Ispend my life if I'm getting into trouble
(28:00):
and getting out of it. That'sat the same time I generally managed to
get some other people in and outof trouble too. Seeing you again,
hold on, welcome back. Ikind of got a hint as to who
(28:26):
the killer was when he threatened hisown mother if she didn't shut up.
Now, maybe it was meant tobe ambiguous, like he was concerned for
her life, for safety if shedidn't leave these issues alone. But it
did not come off that way,I mean, believe it or not.
(28:49):
I mean, given the subtlety ofthe actor's performance, you think it wouldn't
be so obvious, but it was. We turned now to listener comments and
feedback, and it received a questionfrom Leo who writes, were there any
shows during World War Two? Theyall seemed to be from nineteen forty six
(29:11):
to the fifties. What was inthe radio during the war on any of
the shows? Johnnie Dollar, misterX crime photographer The fat Man? Who
isn't that fat at two hundred andthirty nine pounds unless he is a short
guy? All right? Well, taking the fat man related episode question,
(29:33):
first, Jack Smart, who playedthe fat Man, was actually five foot
nine and in reality he was twohundred and seventy pounds. Oh, the
character was thirty one pounds alder andusing the modern measurement of bmi, that
comes out to about thirty five Forthe fat man's weight, which would put
(29:55):
him in the obese arrange, inbetween the obese very obese. Although I
know BMI is a controversial measure, but it's not all that far off the
beaten path to suggest the fat man'sfat, particularly the feet goes around say
an he's fat. Now, asto World War Two episodes, there are
(30:17):
not very many now of the showswe are doing. There are a handful
of episodes of The Man called Xfrom World War Two. You know,
we played them more than a yearago, but they are really quite good.
And then the first two Casey episodeswe have are from the World War
(30:40):
Two era. And the big problemthat we run into with World War two
programs is that the materials used fortranscription disc, which is what radio programs
that were sent out during that erawe're on, were made of vital war
(31:02):
materials, so they often ended upin drives. I was listening to a
recording where people were being encouraged toturn in their old records so that they
could be essentially recycled and turned intonew records for soldiers, and I imagine
the same fate happened to a lotof the transcription disk. So it is
(31:27):
really rare for us to have programsfrom World War Two. I think Nick
Carter probably had the most World WarTwo episodes in circulation of any of the
series that we'd end, and eventhose series which we do have some recordings
(31:48):
for, there are a lot ofmissing. For example, with Casey Crime
Photographer, we do have two episodesfrom World War Two, but one hundred
and four forty nine of the firstone hundred and fifty one Casey Crime Photographer
broadcast or missing. And of theWorld War two Man Called X episodes,
(32:12):
there were several different seasons and Ithink those are probably about eighty ninety percent
of the Man Called X during WorldWar Two is missing, and those are
ones that in terms of episodes incirculation, are pretty good for World War
two series. And I will addif you are interested in World War two
(32:34):
programs, I would encourage you tocheck out The War The War Dot Great
Detectives Dot and at its World Wartwo podcast I did mostly in two thousand
and thirteen and two thousand and fourteen. Oh I've revisited a couple of times
and essentially tells the story of thewar through old time radio programs, not
just detective shows, but comedy, music, news programs, documentary, these
(33:00):
dramas. So if you're into thatera of radio or history, it's worth
checking out. Check it out theWar dot Great Detectives dot net. Thanks
so much for the question. Iappreciate it, Leo, and I want
to go ahead and thank our Patreonsupporter of the day. Thank you to
