Jaguar Senior writer John Osher, NFL Network analyst and former
Jaguar Bucky Brooks, and Senior reporter JP Shaddrick bring you
the latest on your Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Huddle Up starts right now. Welcome in.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
It is Wednesday, June fourth, Huddle Up with Bucky Brooks.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
J P.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Shadrick, John Oser from Monday Studios at the Miller Electric
Center in Jacksonville. Bucky Brooks in Los Angeles, Defense Talk today.
Travis Hunter already going viral after a playing practice in
a closed practice yesterday. The video made it out to
social media. And we'll get to that one week remaining
(00:46):
in the off season program. And Houddle Up with Bucky
Brooks is brought to you by Field's Auto Group, Jacksonville
CE Fields First, Jacksonville's premiere luxury auto group. Go to
Fieldsauto dot com. Bucky Howie feeling, what's up?
Speaker 5 (01:00):
I'm good, Jp, I am good.
Speaker 6 (01:01):
I'm glad that you had on the rundown today to
talk about the little play that went viral.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
I saw your comments on X regarding.
Speaker 6 (01:10):
One Travis Hunter and the contributions he's already making on defense.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, John, Yeah, he.
Speaker 7 (01:17):
Everything you hear beyond this play. Yeah, that's obviously shows
what we'll be talking about. The ball skills. Yeah. I
think when people who haven't watched him, Bucky, who maybe
don't follow college footballs as closely as you know, people
(01:39):
who do what we do, don't realize the way they
say special ball skills, this is a different guy on
that level maybe than what we've seen in a long time.
Speaker 6 (01:50):
You know, John, Look, I've been around a bunch of
great players, and I know it's OTA's and I know
you don't want to get too excited about shorts and
ts and stuff, but man, that play.
Speaker 5 (02:02):
Right there is so unbelievable. One. You have to understand.
Speaker 6 (02:05):
He's pressing up against the guy to knock the ball
away like which wuld be a great play in itself,
like a PBu, but then to see it hit off
of his form to bounce lightly and for him to
catch it is ridiculous. I mean, I mean, like it,
it's just ridiculous to see someone have those kinds of
(02:28):
ball skills, and for him it wasn't like anything out
of the ordinary. But you can see the reaction from
his teammates about how great that play is.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
And we've seen a lot of.
Speaker 6 (02:39):
Players man that position on the corner in Jacksonville for
a long time.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
What he has already done in the.
Speaker 6 (02:45):
Little limited displays where we've seen him play on defense, man,
it just makes you want to put him on defense
and see if he.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
Could be a two way play.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
Even though we spent last week talking about, oh, well,
you know, maybe a man and a half or whatever.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
I do understand why Liam khyn.
Speaker 6 (03:02):
Had talked about the defensive coaches asking for a little
more time, because when you give him more time, he
makes more plays.
Speaker 7 (03:08):
Everything you hear, and this is off the record, on
the record, is that it's going to be hard to
keep him off the field on defense. That's going to
be the challenge we talked about. You know, you've got
the you've got this incredible athlete essentially straining at the
leash where they've got to hold him back and try
(03:29):
to protect him. And it's going to be hard because
I think we talked about in the show last week,
Bucky he's not a true takeaway a receiver, corner man
up guy like that's not necessarily it. But his ball
skills are so unbelievable that you want to have him
on the field facing the quarterback trying to take the
(03:50):
ball away, and there's not that many guys like that.
He's almost like the playmaker on defense who can turn
defense into points. You know, it's an exaggeration. He's not
gonna do it every game, but it's Uh. We tend
to talk about athletes and compare them to what we've
(04:13):
seen before. This is something we haven't seen before, and
so you've sort of got to expand your mind in
how this is going to be interpreted and how he's
gonna be used.
Speaker 6 (04:26):
Yeah, and look, I'm not gonna put him put a
gold jacket on him, but what I will do is
I use like some guys that I played with as
a point of reference, guys that do have gold jack
because I played with Eric Allen, I played with Charles Woodson,
and I'm a close friend of Rod Woodson, and I
remember watching those guys, particularly Charles Woodson and Eric Allen
(04:47):
and practice and how it was very routine to see
them not only put their hands on the ball but
to make special plays. And guys that also played at
at level like Adale Carter or James Hasty who are
perennial PO Bowl All Pro type players and the things
that they're able to do in practice is they always
issue a reminder almost daily in terms of why you
(05:10):
revere them to that degree. And looking at that play
and looking at the clips that came from Friday when
he made his debut on defense, and you just see
the ball skills and the.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
One on one.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
Drills against Brian Thomas Junior and those things like, you
can just see how good he is. And look, I
wrote in my notes that Okay, man, it's cool to
have like a wide receiver two, but man, when you
have a wide receiver two and a CB one, that combination,
I mean, it's really remarkable.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
In terms of what he could do. I'm excited to
see how they utilize him.
Speaker 6 (05:48):
I hope that is like summer plays, don't kind of
force them to deviate from the plant. Because I think
the plan to have him as a full time wide
receiver and a guy to have a playmaker on defense
is a good one.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
But I can't see.
Speaker 6 (06:03):
Why you would think about putting him on the field
more because, man, the return on the investment is significant
when he plays it.
Speaker 7 (06:12):
Yeah, I think the fascinating story could become. And we've
talked about around here. Anybody who talks about Travis talks
about this is you can his body endure the role
that he would like to play and the role that ideally,
if this were Madden and you could take off the
(06:34):
reality of fatigue, you'd have him play in every play
all the time. But if he can withstand that, the
fascinating thing is how long are they going to be
able to how long are they going to be able
to keep him from being full time on both sides,
Because that's what I keep hearing is he is really
(06:57):
going to push to play a full time role on
both sides. Can he withstand it? That's the million dollar
question that we can never know until it happens.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
Let's hear from the head coach, Liam Cohen. He's the
guy that has to make that decision at the end
of the day. He spoke on Monday about Hunter playing defense.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
We were in the red area last on Friday and
didn't end up making any like plays on the ball,
but just the movement skills and some of the man coverages,
the feel and zone, you can definitely see how natural
it is for him. Still learning, still growing, still trying
to learn the calls as much as possible. But when
(07:35):
you see him just in the actual seven on in
team setting, he doesn't look out of place by any means.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
No doubt about that, guys.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
And you know it's one of those Bucky you just
kind of do you have to just let him go
up to the edge of too much and then reel
it back in. Hey, Okay, this is probably a little
too strenuous having this many snaps. Or do you just
continue to build it up, build it up until you
get to a point where you're comfortable.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
I think you need to build it up.
Speaker 6 (08:04):
I think the job of the head coaches to protect
the player against himself. And even though Travis is more
than talented enough to do it and is more than
willing to do it, I think it's really important for
Lim going to have a long range plan in terms
of how he wants to utilize Travis Hunter this year.
We know that the combination of him, Dimmi Brown BTJ
(08:30):
on the priment of an offense that should be dynamic
and high powered and explosive. But then it's trying to
figure out how do we fit him in on defense.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
I think the.
Speaker 6 (08:39):
Original plan that they made when everyone's was kind of calm,
the emotions weren't running high. In terms of thinking about
how to utilize him, I think that is a sound one.
Having NBA man and a half player should enable him
to make enough plays, not only on offense but on
defense to help his.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Team make a push and be a much better team
than the one that last season.
Speaker 7 (09:01):
JP and Buck, have you ever been into the beach
or in a pool when it's just a little bit
too cold to get in and you wind up sort
of you know, you go into your knees and you
kind of get back out, and then you go into
your thigh and kind of get back real men jump in,
So you guys probably jumped in. But that's the way
I get into a cold pool. It feels like that's
(09:22):
the way to do it with Travis, right. Let him
get in, Let him get in, and you just get
the feeling at some point that he's going to be
head into that pool and going. But I think the
team needs to make sure that he goes first to
the knees, the end of the thighs, then then go
ahead and get to your you know, you got to
protect from from himself because it is too much of
(09:45):
risk to let him dive right in, even though that's
what JP would do.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
No, I mean, I'm just asking a question. No point
of me, man, I mean.
Speaker 5 (09:53):
I love that and the reason why I love the
swimming analogy. Often use this when reverencing my two kids.
Speaker 6 (09:59):
There was a man, mister Conrad, a Jamaican guy, who
taught my son how to swim. And his method of
teaching guys say, I can get you to swim in
five days. And literally John he took my kid when
he was little. He was like, okay, hey, you want
to swim. Great, and he threw them into the deepense
and he said, oh, you're figured out.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
And then my daughter went to this water wrisper.
Speaker 6 (10:20):
That took like eight weeks and they slowly dropped water
droplets on her on her forehead and that was the
class for a week whatever. And then my son became
a much stronger swimmer because he was just exposed to it.
And I do wonder like you're talking about, like, hey,
we can slowly ease him in and then at some
point you're like, hey, guys.
Speaker 7 (10:40):
We gotta do this.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Go play.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
I like take the floaties off. Yeah, she just gotta
go because.
Speaker 7 (10:45):
You're just feeling in the building that eventually that will
happen with Travis where they're gonna be. They're gonna say,
you know what, he's shown us that he's ready for it,
but they have to make sure that they're right that
he'll be ready.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
And then the athletic training and the strange staff and
all that has to be in Cahusulus too, Bucky. That's
to make sure he's rehabilitated and ready to go the
next day.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:08):
Look, but I think there are things that you can
do from a practice standpoint to get him right where
hey man, maybe Wednesday is a rest and recovery day
where he does the walk.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Through part, but maybe he doesn't practice it.
Speaker 6 (11:20):
I just know this, I can feel it from a
million miles away. There is an electricity and energy when
he is on the field that is different.
Speaker 5 (11:31):
Like for this team.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
I can't remember the last time a player was on
the team where everyone on the team could feel the juice.
I liken it to when I played in Green Bay
was in the middle of Brett Favre's three MVP run,
and when you were on defense, you stood up to
watch what he was going to do on offense. I
get the sense that already players on both sides of
(11:55):
the ball. When twelve is in the game, there's this feeling, Man,
he's going to make a play.
Speaker 5 (12:00):
Let's make sure we watch it.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
And man, that energy is infectious, as contagious as one
of those things that can really take a team to
another level, not on the play.
Speaker 5 (12:08):
Making, but just to juice. Eddie brings as a special
players mad.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
They certainly do.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
And the twenty twenty five season schedule has dropped.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Single game tickets are on sale now.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Don't miss your favorite matchups this year. Security tickets at
Jaguars dot com. Slash tickets are called nine oh four
six three three two thousand. I think John's doing that
right now on it's phone. It went right onto it.
Advertising works, Uh, it does work.
Speaker 5 (12:35):
It's huddled up.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
With Bucky Brooks, Jamie Shedrick, John Oser from the Miller
Electric Center.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
Let's continue on defense.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Josh Heinz Allen defensive end speaking with the media Monday,
and the storyline this week about everybody's a little heavy
last year.
Speaker 8 (12:51):
You know, my mindset was always you know, to be
as dominant, but you know it was a little obviously
holding a little bit more weight you know, puts a
little bit more wear and tear on the body, and
just you know, it was a lot too much. Again,
learned to adopt, got to know what works best for you.
(13:12):
Something I tried and something that I'm like, all right,
I probably don't want to do that again.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
My talent's always good for a quart or two, Bucky,
And he said he was two eighty five.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
At one point last season.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
He wouldn't give us a number now, but it's clearly
he's trimmed up a little bit.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Ain't no, he's not.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
And look I say this, like in the National Football League,
speed is coveted at a premium. And so even though
we like to think the bigger, stronger guy's gonna win,
it's all.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
About the speed element.
Speaker 6 (13:45):
And some of the plays that we gave up was
because on defense we were a slow, heavy legged defense
last year. So quarterbacks escape in the pocket, big plays,
big runs. A lot of that had to do with
just not being a fast team. And this is a
much faster team. When we go and watch them practice,
you can tell that they have like a little more zip,
(14:07):
a little more buzz and energy about them.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
And man, your best players have to be not only
at a comfortable way. They got to be in a
comfortable position, and.
Speaker 6 (14:15):
I feel like all of the Jaguars marquee players, particularly
on defense.
Speaker 5 (14:20):
Are settled in the spots that should allow.
Speaker 6 (14:23):
Them to play at the best because that's where they
were best at. Meaning not only Josh enzen Island and
Hearan Walker, but also Tyson Campbell and Foyer and Devin Lloyd.
All of these guys are playing positions that are best
suited towards their skill sets and where we've seen them
in Jaguars uniforms play at their best.
Speaker 7 (14:43):
Yeah, I forget how Josh exactly phrased it, but it
was interesting. He was talking about when he goes out
on the field, he wants to be thinking about nothing
else but dominating the guy in front of him, right,
and he was referencing the Guardian cap, but he also
sort of referenced back to your last year with the weight.
(15:08):
This game, you're playing the best players in the world
and the best athletes in that sport in the world.
You want to go out feeling like you're Superman. And
if if you have something that makes you feel like
you're less than your best self, which last year clearly
(15:28):
was the weight for these guys. You know, everything in
the NFL is based on a nine beating and eight.
I mean, you don't have matchups of nine versus four
athletic ability in this league. It's everything's razor sharp. If
you're not if you're not at your absolute best, you're
not going to win. And the weight clearly kept them
(15:50):
from being at their absolute best and they felt it.
So I guess, I say it's on the show the
other day, Bucky, he had seventeen and a half sacks,
and I guess they took the approach last year. Hey,
if it ain't broke, let's add weight. I mean, come on,
(16:11):
So it's over. It's in the past, and clearly these
guys are excited about the approach going on on defense now,
you know, and.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
You can see the excitement.
Speaker 6 (16:24):
I just think, like justin watching them move around and
fly around, like it's just the comfortability.
Speaker 5 (16:30):
Like when guys are comfortable.
Speaker 6 (16:32):
And they are feeling at their best, they play a
step faster, and I think it's apparent that the defense
is playing faster. It's also part of being a little
more zone based defense than man based, where you see
the reaction time is a lot quicker when it comes
to closing to the ball. And let's be honest, man,
I think the upgrades that they've added are certainly going
(16:53):
to serve the team well when it comes to what
this team looks like trying out And we can say
all that's knowing that it's only.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
OTAs and they really don't mean anything.
Speaker 6 (17:03):
But I believe there's a tremendous sense around the building
that this team is gonna be much better than many
people expect them to be.
Speaker 7 (17:09):
Jp this team, I was writing about something else last night.
I was looking up a stat They had six interceptions
last year. Oh, that's hard to do if you're trying right.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
I mean, sometimes they're gonna throw it at you, you
get a tip ball or like something.
Speaker 7 (17:27):
So just that I mean, and they had more fumble
recoveries than that their whole turn of a ratio, but six, man,
So it's hard to imagine this defense this year, Bucky
not being better minimum at takeaways. I don't know where
their ranking will be, but this sort of style zone
(17:47):
facing the quarterback Travis Hunter on the field. We talked
so much about offense. I guess is why I'm off
on this track that that really feels like it's going
to be a theme of the defense this year. I'd
be stunned if there's not more takeaways.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Takeaways is the number one deciding factor in ball.
Speaker 6 (18:03):
Just throw out any other stat when you just come
down to doing the takeaway battle, Like if you win
the takeaway battle by one, you win sixty four percent
of your games. By two, it goes up to about
seventy eight percent. If you win it by three, you're
now talking about ninety percent of the games are gonna
be won if you win to take a battle by
(18:24):
that much. And so you think about that, you understand
why there's such a great emphasis on being able to
take the ball away because it coincides with winning well.
Making the move to more of a zone base. You'll
hear them talk about vision and break. You can get
your turnovers off tips and overthrows. You can get your
turnovers because you're running to the ball fast and you
(18:45):
knock the ball loose because you got more hats running
with bad intentions to the football because they see the
ball thrown. And then the emphasis on knocking the ball
out is just going to become habitual. It's a habit
to go after the ball and all of these things,
these habits that they create. Now I'll go mattering games
because you will see more takeaways happen just because of
(19:06):
the philosophical change that has taking place with the defense.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Time to get to Daily's Place.
Speaker 3 (19:13):
Busy schedule now that we're in June, it's it's upon us.
John Old Dominion June sixth, that's coming up in two days.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
Packed house for that.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
When Vampire Weekend June twelve, Class Animals June seventeenth, plenty
more ahead, all the tickets at info at Dailyesplace dot com.
Got a chance to go. Oh the boss, Patrick Cavanugh.
I went to Sticks the other night.
Speaker 7 (19:37):
Yes, I heard sick. Are you a speed wagon?
Speaker 2 (19:40):
No, we weren't there. No, it was Kevin Cronin and
Don Felder.
Speaker 7 (19:44):
Kevin Cronan was Ari Speedway, was he?
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Okay? We got there after we got there for the headliner.
Speaker 7 (19:48):
Don Felder wasn't the Eagles that Kevin Cronin was Ari
speed Well, oh there he's not fair. Rsp I had
had a great guitar player, but Kevin Cronan was the
voice of Ri Speedway.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
We got there in time for Sticks, Okay it is
probably did and probably riding the storm. I think I'm
gonna make it okay without those, that's fine. But it
was a good show, really good show. You see that
you're telling stories about sticks in the old light.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yes, and that's okay. We don't have to go through those.
Speaker 7 (20:16):
Second day was Uh, it was one of my bands
in nineteen eighty.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
A couple of roster moves for the Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
As we wrap up here, Trenton Irwin wide receiver signed
to one Smooth defensive end is coming back.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
How about that?
Speaker 3 (20:32):
And they've waved a wide receiver David White Junior. That
was on Tuesday, and then news Wednesday that the Jaguars
are waving running back Keelan Robinson Bucky.
Speaker 6 (20:43):
Wow, that was quick when it came to Keenan Robinson.
I'm gonna say this so glad to have Smooth coming back.
Speaker 7 (20:49):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (20:50):
He's a big part of it, like doing that playoff run.
He made a lot of plays.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
He was an integral part of the team and the
energy certain to helped his team. And they need another
pass rusher and heroded past rusher. Trenton Irwin is an
interesting story because he's out my way. I've known trend
since he was a kid. Coached him a few different
times as a kid, watched him grow up. He is
an all time great high school player out in LA
(21:14):
in terms of from his freshman year on, he might
finish his high school career with maybe four hundred catches.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
I mean, the dude caught a million balls.
Speaker 6 (21:21):
And seeing super prolific when it comes to it, So
it'd be amazing to see him run around.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
I like what the.
Speaker 6 (21:28):
Jags are doing, like as it comes to filling out
the roster, in some of the late additions that they've
added post draft, whether it's Emmanuel Agba, we're not talking
about Smoot, They've really done a good job of patiently
adding to the team to make sure that they can
put out the best roster possible going forward.
Speaker 7 (21:46):
And Bucky, isn't this kind of a case where, you know,
going into the draft they intentionally left the roster. You know,
it wasn't stuffed, Like they weren't unbuckling their belt after
the meal. They were still sort of okay, we've got
some spots that we could still develop. And now that
(22:06):
they're seeing some of their young players in OTAs they've
given themselves a few weeks of OTA, it's okay. Yeah,
let's go ahead and go get a fifth receiver. Now
it's time to sort of make sure we're deep enough
in the past rush they get a Are these moves
about sort of having a better feel for where your
(22:26):
roster is at from thirty to forty two or whatever
level I'm talking about.
Speaker 6 (22:33):
Yeah, No, I mean, look, I think that's a big thing,
and sometimes that that process will take place in training camp.
After you get to that first preseason game, you give
the young guys a bunch of reps, and then after
you see them play that first preseason game, you reassess
where you are and you may go sign a veteran
or two to fill in some huge gaps. This is
(22:54):
one when I think about Trent Irwin coming on, like, hey,
giving them a veteran wide receiver to look be a
guy that can be a viable option to compete for
maybe the final roster spot in that room. And then
when we talk about smooth is just trying to find
some other people that can get after it. It is
taking a great opportunity to look at the team. Let's
(23:16):
make sure we have the right training camp roster. I
think John, you've talked about Bill Polling always being like
you always want to have to have a roster that
if we had to put the ball down today, we
feel confident enough about what we had to put out there.
I think this is part of that process to make
sure we always have a team that is ready to
play if we had to break it out and play today.
Speaker 7 (23:38):
At New you can also see JP they've talked so
much about since Gladstone got here and Liam and Tony.
How many times you heard these guys talk about we
want guys who love football and every I've never been
around it. I've never been around a regime that wants
guys who don't like it.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
But these guys, I want these guys to hate the game.
Speaker 7 (23:58):
But there's a difference between saying that and acting it. Smoot,
you know you've been around I mean, this is a
guy who when they talk about culture, when they talk
about wanting guys in the building who are the kind
of players that this team wants, Smooth fits that to
a tea, A veteran guy. I love being around football
(24:21):
players who have gotten the most out of their careers. Meaning,
you know, I don't know what kind of recruit Smoot was,
but this is a guy who has worked to maximize
what he can do in this league, loves being around it,
and it's gonna squeeze every last drop out of his
career that will fit in well and be a good
