Speaker 1 (00:18):
Day.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
I'm Kennannie Stevens, Brian Sexton, and John Osier with me
this morning.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
And as I mentioned, it's a victory Monday.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
So it's always been here at jag XAM after the
Jaguars come off a win an absolute rock fight with
the Texans yesterday, but Jaguars coming out on top. Let's
go through our big things, brought to you by g
e h A Government and Ployee Health Association.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Big thing number one is finding a way.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
It was not pretty, was not pretty at all, but
the Jaguars found a way to win.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
That game means a lot. It means a lot.
Speaker 4 (00:46):
I don't think it's a secret that we don't like
each other, so there's a fun game for us and
to find a way to do it. Like I said,
we're gonna see him again. So that's all I really
have to say right now. But it felt good, as
you guys can tell.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Brian that smiles says a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
It's always good to get a win, but it's definitely
always good to get a win against the Texans.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
Yeah, you know, yesterday Kyle Fred Taylor and I dubbed
this the Redeemed team because.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
That was what it was yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Right.
Speaker 5 (01:11):
I mean Tyson Campbell gave up the long touchdown and
he redeemed himself by forcing the fumble, and then he
made a really big play on Nico Collins on the
Texans Final Series. Brian Thomas Junior came in searching for
some sort of redemption after last week, and he made
a huge play when the game counted. Trevor Lawrence through
the interception of the fourth quarter. They sat at the
game time touchdown and he came through with a big
(01:31):
scramble on third down at six and even even the
play to Brian Thomas Junior.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
So I mean, just just go with it.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
I mean, they were redeemed team yesterday and they've got
big smiles on their face. Between redemption and resilience, which
are two words that described this team, yesterday was a
really big win for them.
Speaker 6 (01:50):
Yeah, I think and Ky you said that it's all
Trevor had to say. It wasn't all he had to say.
He was better later when he said, look, we're not
going to be bullied, and I thought that was one
of the coolest, most revealing podium appearances the Trevors had
after a game. The smile. Look, I don't know if
it was all about last December and all that. I
(02:12):
don't know how, I don't know. I'm not smart enough
to know what percentage it was for Trevor or if
it was just the fact that the Texans were bullies
or the fact that they got a big win. I
got complaints, KYI complaints last night about the win. Like
we've won so much around here that you can complain
about it. They beat the Texans and they're two and one.
(02:33):
Yesterday was a really good day for the Jaguars no
matter how it looked on the field.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
I love it.
Speaker 6 (02:37):
I love the points.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
I like complaints after a win.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
It's a lot funnier to me that way around than
it is when they lose. So let's go to our
second big thing, which is trust factor. We talked a
ton about the trust between the coach and the quarterback,
the quarterback and the wide receiver, and things were not
going their way for most of that game, but they
had that trust factor late in the fourth quarter when
they needed it.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Coach Ton talked about it.
Speaker 7 (03:00):
Yeah, he was frustrated, We're all frustrated on the sidelines
and communicating, But there really was none of this at all.
It was just accountability let's just go play the next play.
And then in a critical moment, that play to bt
was all Trevor in terms of the can like that
was a run play that they had saw blitz on
zero blitz. He gets out of the play we had
(03:23):
a run on. He gets out of it, fixes the protection,
picks it up, and then we execute the kind of
skinny that we had in there and BT comes ripping
in the window. He delivers it on time. I mean, yeah,
it was a very frustrating outing in a lot of ways, man,
But I'm hoping and we're hopeful that a moment like
(03:43):
this can maybe do this for us and help us
go to the next level in terms of understanding truly
what it takes to throw and catch at a consistent level.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
John looking at that things were not going well for
the team, but when they needed to make those decisions
late and come back and rally, they did that having
that trust factor. Cohen calling out Trevor saying he can
that play. He made that play to BTJ that set
up the go ahead touchdown.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
It's nice to.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
See that when things are going awry, they don't let
that affect what the next play is going to be.
Speaker 6 (04:14):
Yeah, maybe I'll just look at this thing differently, because again,
all the complaints the NFL in September, and Brian, you've
seen this a million times.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
You know.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
It is about getting through the process of figuring out
who you are and iron out the kinks. There's not
eight week training camps anymore. And how many times with
this franchise have we seen them lose a couple of
games like that early and all of a sudden be
one and four and staring at a mountain you can't
climb when you finally do get it going at two
and one. I thought the fact that Trevor checked out
(04:46):
of the play when I was covering the Colts. Brian,
how many times did they come in here and barely
squeak out a win where you thought their offense played bad,
and all of a sudden they're leaving here with a
ten to three win or a seventeen to ten win.
They won the game, and in the big moment, Brian
Thomas Junior and Terror Lawrence came up with a big play.
Great players in this league struggle in this league struggles
(05:10):
the good ones and the winning ones come up with
a way to win in the key moments. I'm wreking
mystic after that game, Brian than I was before.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Two things. First of all, John, you just talked about
a divisional game.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
I mean, the teams know each other so well, and Kay,
the animosity that existed because of Al Shaier's hit last year,
that kind of the animosity exists all over the league
between various teams, right, go look at the Steelers and
the Ravens. I mean there's all sorts of those examples.
And so the Texans came in here knowing the Jaguars
were still unhappy about it, and they were zero and two,
(05:43):
and they were gonna come in and try to be
the bully and the Jaguars were not going to have
any of it. My eyes were glazed over watching that offense.
At one point I was banging my head like everyone else.
And then I heard Liam afterwards talk about that that
throw to Brian Thomas, and all of a sudden, John,
you talk about optimism. I'm optimistic because the quarterback to
recognize what they were facing, to change the protection that
(06:07):
everybody on the play understood what was happening again, new scheme,
new coach, right, and all of a sudden, you got
to have everybody dialed in with the pressure on and
they delivered that play. That one play has me optimistic
about where this offense is headed.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
We talked a little bit about things that went wrong.
How about things that went right? Our final big thing,
give me that the takeaways for this team. The defense
played out of their mind yesterday. Jordan lewis a huge
part of that. To these takeaways and getting their hands
on the ball just part of their identity.
Speaker 8 (06:40):
That's our Carly Kark, go out there and take the
ball away. We've been talking about that since LTA, So
we just want to go out there and of course
turnovers and make it a bad day for the offense
and you know those quarterbacks that we're facing, so we've
been doing a pretty good job of that.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
You have to stay on the screws and.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
We know to keep the bearings ran.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
It's truly hard to comprehend that this team in three
weeks has already met their takeaway total from last year
as a whole. And that's probably more of an indictment
on the defense from last year. But the point is
having this many bunches of turnovers, takeaways, forced interceptions, it's
changed the mark of this team, and when you have
(07:16):
a bad offensive day and you have three takeaways, that's
how you win a game.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
I go back to a preseason production meeting that Liam
had with Bucky Brooks and I before the Steelers game,
and we were talking about various things, and he stopped
us and said, talk about takeaways, because we're not doing
anything with only eight takeaways this year. That has to change.
And through three weeks, they lead the league with nine takeaways.
They lead the NFL with seven interceptions. It's remarkable what
(07:41):
they've done. And for the first time in franchise history, John,
they have three games back to back to back with
three turnovers in each game, and that all three of
them came in the fourth quarter when the game was
decided Yesterday is even better.
Speaker 6 (07:55):
Yeah, some of this is game circumstance too. News flash.
The Jayward didn't lead very much last year. I think
they've trailed for eighteen seconds this year. If I'm doing
the math right, When you're leading and when you are
playing in control of the game, you put pressure on
the other team to do things, and they want to
(08:16):
do The Texans were trying to get back in that
game on Sunday and late through the pick. So that's
not taking anything away from the defense. It's making the
point that look, no matter what the offense does on
a particular day or the defense doesn't a particular day,
this team is fighting, scrapping, they're playing smart. The defense
(08:38):
I feel like believes in Campanally, so I three a
game is not sustainable. I mean it would be a record,
it would be unbelieve it. Maybe it is, but it's
going to fight and scrap, like the team that's gotten
nine turnovers so far that boades really well, this is
I think this is going to get interesting.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
They trailed for eighteen seconds this year and you're getting planes.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Fans, fans, fans, got a fan here now, we gotta
we gotta meet the bar. Now say with this here
on jag XAM, we're gonna go over the highlights for
you from a win yesterday.
Speaker 6 (09:10):
That's what.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
We're not gonna get bullied. You know.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
It's a team that, uh, that's that's what I feel
like they want to do and not saying that's wrong,
but that's their.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Mindset and it's not going to happen to this team.
So it was it was fun to be able to.
Speaker 4 (09:34):
Punch back and stand up in those moments where it's like,
all right, you want to throw that punch, like we're here.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
You know, did you hear from you quarterback Cover Lawrence?
Speaker 2 (09:43):
They're not gonna get bully, get their first Divisional win
of the year and send the Texans back to Houston
zero to three. John, It was nice to hear it from,
you know, a leader on your team saying, hey, this
has been a bully in the division.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Not this year.
Speaker 6 (09:54):
Yeah, I mean again, I thought it was the most
confident Bowl statement we've heard from him after a game.
I don't think it should be lost either that they
did everything went wrong. They drove a three yards on
seven plays at the end of the game to win
the game, and he made a couple of big plays
(10:15):
on those drives. Also, the Texans were zero to two
coming in. I believe desperate team syndrome in the NFL
is real. It's hard to knock it because you're sort
of delivering a knockout punch. Maybe the Texans come back
in this, but you feel like it's a knockout punch.
It's hard to knock out. And they did it, and
(10:38):
for those reasons, I thought it was a great NFL win.
No matter how it looked, if you don't win that
game yesterday, it's still the Texans Division.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
It just is.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
Whether they win it or not, they're over you and
they hold that over you. And they've got eight straight
wins here. Yesterday was so important because the message was
beyond bullying. It was you're done owning us in our
own house. Sure we are ready, and the message that
sounds very good Texans team right now. They don't run
the ball all over that well. Their offensive line is
(11:06):
the shambles. If they come in and beat you when
they're not very good, it's a real negative feeling as
you walk off the field. So that was a huge
win for a.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Lot of reasons, very telling for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Let's get into some of the highlights.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
We'll start out with that first scoring drive for the Jaguars,
because there wasn't a ton of scoring early on, but
they did get a touchdown early and saw some key
players we've been talking about on offense get involved in that.
So first off, it was gonna be Brent's train, I
think here with the big first down, and he's just
been so I mean, we talk about him all the time,
right like he's one of our favorite players, but to
(11:38):
see Brenton Strange involved and then Parker Washington, who didn't
have a great day, but good catch here to set
up the touchdown for Tuton who has been getting an
increased role. And when we talk about maybe some players
the Deommi Brown beatj not stepping up and you can go
to other players, that's that's huge.
Speaker 5 (11:54):
Listen, this is as high compliment as I can pay.
These are dependable guys. I mean, maybe maybe Brenton's Strange
rises to the level of star at some point in Screw,
but you know that you can put the ball in
the hands of Brenton Strange and he is coming down
with it. And if you need a couple of hard
park LARTs, he's getting that too. Same thing with Parker Washington.
I know he had some drops yesterday, but he's generally
good for.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
A couple of tough catches a game.
Speaker 5 (12:15):
When your stars aren't performing and you can lean on
your dependable players to get you in that position, you've
got a roster that you can grow with.
Speaker 6 (12:22):
Yeah, I think Brenton Strange headed is headed to a
outstanding career. I'm not sure how he could be better
right now unless he was this weird combination of this
physical player and he can run a four three. I mean,
he's outstanding for what they need him to do. He
could have played tight end in any era in this league.
(12:43):
He's a big reason they won this game. And again
go back to they didn't leave. That's a few on
the field. They left the BTJ miss that happened a couple,
but they didn't leave that much on the field. And
they scored when they got in the red zone, and
that when you turn those kind of points and don't
(13:05):
I guess leave them on the field. I was gonna
use another.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Ord Cincinnati last week. They left two scores in the
red zone on the field.
Speaker 6 (13:10):
They didn't, so they found a way to win. And
I keep going back to that.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Let's take a look at some of the defensive play.
Here's just one of the sacks they had on the
day against c J. Stroud, But Josh heinz Allen was
all over the place. You think you have to go
with a half sack on this split it with Armstead,
but he obviously is gonna affect the final play of
the game. But just seeing what the past rush has
been able to do, whether it's sacks, whether it's pressures,
whether it's you know, getting a hit on the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
I feel like that's contributed.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
So much to these takeaways, right because they're getting in
a situation where they have a good play on first down,
so then they have the opportunity to rush the passer
and affect things. And obviously it's complimentary football, but it's
good to see Josh hens Allen and Trevon Walker, who
can both be game wreckers if given that ability, you know,
to have a point where they can rush the pass
and really do something there.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
It was nice to see Josh affect so many things yesterday.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
Yeah, Josh is affecting the offensive coordinator in this ballgame
because they were so reluctant to throw anything down the field.
They just didn't trust their tackles to hold up against
forty one and forty four and his quickness off the edge.
What did seventy nine the rookie year who's world I
can't pronounce left tackle had two holding penalties, He had
(14:20):
a face masking penalty. He affected him too.
Speaker 3 (14:23):
Josh does a lot of damage even if he doesn't
have a lot of sacks. Shut.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
Yeah, everybody wants to judge defensive ends on sacks. This
is a big debate and the Ozone last week and
people were trying to tell me that Josh, Heines Allen
and Trayvon are playing bad offenses in this day and age,
design things to get the ball out of defensive ends,
I mean out of quarterback's hands, and for Josh to
(14:47):
affect consistently every play. It seemed like yesterday that ranked
to me up in the top two or three games
he's played here because of the moment, because of the
impact he's playing as well as he's played.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
Let's take a look.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Kim Little missed a kick at one point, which in
the grand scheme of things, is not a huge deal.
I think we all know he has a great leg
on him, But I think the thing that's slightly concerning
is just to show where the game was going at
that point. It felt like everything was kind of going wrong.
But we can't rely like you know, you see him
make a crazy kick in the preseason.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
We can't.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
This is not every week things happen.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
It's not relying fully on that, but just showing that
that doesn't let you, I think, get out of it,
I guess, is what I'm trying to say.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
Yeah, you know, I don't think i've seen miss a
kick on the practice field. Then he didn't miss one
in the preseason. It hadn't missed one until that point.
It's a good reminder that that's not a given. It's
not easy to do from forty seven yards away. It
isn't yet that easy to well for any of us
to do from thirty seven yards away.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
It's a tough thing, very hard for me to do.
But yeah, it's a first time he has missed it.
As you said, Ryan, anything remotely a competitive situation, he'll
be fine. Obviously, it was a shame that the miss
came in that game, because it was clear when he
missed it. Sometimes you miss field goals. It's not a
(16:08):
big deal in that one. You felt like getting a
ten point lead a lot was the equivalent of a
seventeen point lead in some other style games, So it
was big.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
All right, Let's get a little later in this when
things started turn around or things started happening, Houston tried
to get something going. Nego Collins obviously has always been
has been one of the best receivers in the league,
and when he gets going against the Jaguars, it's always
tough but trying to get something going here, but then
you get a takeaway and for the Jaguars to you know, stop,
maybe allow something, but then stop it after that, stop
(16:38):
the bleeding, you know. I think that's huge. We haven't
seen it in the past couple of years at least
because they let things kind of continue to roll and
get away from them. But just Jordan Lewis has been
such an addition to this team in the locker room,
on the field. To think one player can have such
a huge effect on the mentality John, it's been impressive
for me to see it.
Speaker 6 (16:57):
Well, yeah, and it's amazing. I'm not sure I've ever
seen a cornerback come in or even even when Jalen
was here. He's probably the best cornerback we've ever recovered
and affect every practice and make plays in every practice,
have his hands on the balls and every practice because
it's hard. Mary Fernando Bryant way back in the day
(17:18):
told me the reason their receptions are hard is the
entire game is schemed to not let you do it.
He does it constantly. Think about this, and Brian, you've
seen every game in franchise history three turnovers forced, all
in the fourth quarter all inside the twenty. I wonder
if there's ever been a game where they've had that
(17:38):
many clutch have to takeaways. It was a remarkable effort
on that part.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
I don't remember it ever happening, and I started looking
through the numbers last night. In fact, it's part of
my hot take. It would have to be one of
the great defenses that the jack Wars have had in
ninety nine, two thousand and seven or twenty and seventeen.
Speaker 6 (17:54):
But game on the line, you know what I know it.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Was I was writing.
Speaker 5 (17:59):
I was kind of sketching out quick thoughts in the
fourth quarters. The fourth quarter started, and my pregame story
pregame storylines last week had been the running game has
been so good, and the Jaguars led the league heading
into that game and takeaways, and in the fourth quarters
it started, they hadn't run the ball, they hadn't taken away,
and then Lewis.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Comes up with that play.
Speaker 5 (18:18):
And then after the game in his postgame news conference,
to listen to Liam Colehen talk about Lewis who was
in his office early one morning last week seeking to
be better, and you see the piece of video and
you see the sea on his chest, and you realize
for a cornerback to come in as a free agent, and.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
I think everybody hoped that he would be good.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
I don't think anyone expected that, but that his team
made him a captain so quickly into this thing tells
you the impact he's had. The Jaguars secondary had no
reason to be confident when this season began, based on
the way that last season ended, and yet they were
largely because of him.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
A full one amy for sure.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Let's talk about a little bit about Trevor Lawrence's interception.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Texans get a touchdown out of it.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
This is what I'm talking about in terms of this
my hot take a little bit, but just bouncing back
from some things like this, Obviously there's gonna be mistakes made.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
This one was tough.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
You know, throwing him is double coverage there and the
interception and then it's set up and then Tyson Campbell,
who's had his struggles at points this season. You know,
after this interception, when the jag, when the Texans take over,
kind of a one play, you look away from the
TV for sixty seconds and it's gone gone completely the
other way you get as high game. So it was
inopportune in timing. But as we're going to get to
(19:29):
the other takeaways coming up after that for the Jaguars
on defense. But I think for me seeing Tyson Campbell
kind of give up this play with enough after that
interception and it was.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Just difficult to.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
I'm impressed with I'm frustrated at times with how Tyson
is playing, but his mentality to bounce back, which as
a corner has to be your mentality on every single
play to be able to be like, Okay, I gave
something up, but now I need to get back into it.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
I was impressed that he.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
Was able to do that, forgive himself and forget that play,
because he would come back can make.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
Two huge plays.
Speaker 5 (20:01):
We've talked about resilience so often it starts to become
a moot point. But yesterday he came back and forced
the fumble that turned the game around for the Jaguars.
And then a play that a lot of people might
forget is on the first play after the Jaguars touchdown,
CJ Shrouds through a beautiful ball to Nico Collins streaking
down the Texans sideline, and I mean he threw it
(20:21):
up high where the tall Collins could pull it in
and Tyson went up and broke it away. I mean,
just a spectacular play that kept the Texans in a
desperate mode. It was awesome to watch him come back.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Let's take a look at let's do that final drive
for the Jaguars. So Btj's catch and then the touchdown.
So we talked a little bit about this off the
top right. William Cohen said this was supposed to be
a design run play. Trevor Lawrence candidate said do this
and said, I like the coverage going to BTJ on
a day when last week all you heard was about
(20:54):
his drops didn't play great all of the game yesterday.
But to come through in that moment and say I'm
gonna trust this guy to go get the football.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
That's a good spot to.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Be for me, at least to know that they're still trust,
that they're not pointing the fingers at each other.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
Yeah. I happened to walk through the locker room very
late after Trevor had done his his his oppressor. I
was passing his locker and I said it. I asked him.
He says, that's the best uh check you've ever like.
It's change play you've ever had. I thought it was
and he he he kind of thought, I'm sure there
are others. He goes at it. It's a pretty good
way and uh uh, you know, I kind of wanted
(21:30):
to ask him, and I I he also had to
throw the ball to BTJ in that moment, and yes,
he's your best receiver, but it has been struggled. Uh
but you know what, keep going back to the guy,
the point guard, keeps going back to the shooter. And
uh it it was a big, big moment. And as
I said, we've all seen great players, and these guys
(21:53):
aren't great yet, but we've all seen big time players struggle.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
And then we've all seen the games where that last
drive they come up with the moment when it matters
and you win the game. And you know what, in
a year, we'll remember that play.
Speaker 3 (22:05):
It's great for the others. Yeah, and you know, great
check everything. He started the game so sharp.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
We showed earlier the throw to Bretton Strange was pinpoint,
and the same thing on the scoring drive to Parker Washington.
And then he had some throws that he would like back,
and then when the moment was the biggest, right, he
comes through with a pinpoint pass and puts his receiver
in a spot where he can excel right the throw
that puts him in a spot where he can turn
(22:31):
and run. It was good to see him finish the
game like he started it.
Speaker 6 (22:34):
And I know we're a little long, but two plays
on that drive he had to scramble and then he
had that play where mentally, even though there was stuff
going on a lot of drops, he hadn't played great.
It's a battle. Mentally, he was present in the big
moments and I think he could argue that you won
that game because he made good decisions.
Speaker 3 (22:53):
I think so too.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
Let's take one final look our final play. I'm gonna
show you guys.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Is that kind of the sealed the game at the
end of the interception Antonio john and who struggled at
points this season as well last year they let go of.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Darnell Savage earlier.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
That increased playing time for Antonio Johnson to come across
make that play seal it. To see the growth there
as well, Brian was great.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Oh.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
First of all for josh Heinz Allen to reach out
with his left hand like that and just reach and
put it in a position. And they cut Savage as
you mentioned, and they bring in Antonio Johnson.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
I thought he had a terrific camp.
Speaker 5 (23:26):
I thought he was as sending as camp came to
a close, and then he didn't play. He wasn't other
than special teams, much of a factor and they put
him in and what did he have twenty five or
twenty six snaps yesterday and gets a chance at that
talk about staying involved, staying locked in. I think he's
a guy with a lot of upside and to see
him make a play like that at the end, he's fun.
Speaker 6 (23:49):
Yeah, And I'll go to the front of the play
where Heines out had the sack. Liam talked so much
in his presser about the strain for Josh heinz down
and it's me thearing. Okay, it's easiest strain in the
biggest play of the game, But the effort, the inches
that that play was good for him to get that play,
(24:10):
because the game he had, he deserved to be the
one stand at the ten yard line with his hands
in the air.
Speaker 5 (24:17):
At some point in the next couple of weeks, Josh
Heines Allen is going to take the record from Tony
Brackens and the all time career sack leader in Jacksonville
and knowing Tony Brackens like we do. I feel certain
that Tony would be proud to have Josh heinz Allen
take his record and go forward because the two of
them are close. But to watch the way that Josh plays,
(24:41):
he has the ability to do some of the things
that Tony did that was a Tony Brackens play there
at the end.
Speaker 6 (24:46):
Well, in one final thing, Jordan and Lewis Josh heinz
Allen are we're sort of becoming the leaders of this defense.
There's a lot you never doubt how much they care
not only about how they're playing, but about the team
and winning. Uh. They they're both all about the right things,
(25:08):
and I think that matters for your uh too, your
uh best defensive players.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Stay with us here on jack XAM. Coming up after
the break, we'll give you our hot takes jag XAM
brought to you today and part by Firehouse sub specifically
hot takes.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
Got keep my fire house stuff.
Speaker 10 (25:28):
Just knowing that you going and things that a lot
of people wanna do but not able to do or
can can do. So, I mean, you gotta gotta have
that mindset and that'll uh help you go out there
and stay focused and stay confident. Uh, just knowing that
that say, now, everybody can do this, So yeah, you
gotta go out there and make you play when it's.
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Their numbers helps right times, Junior reminding himself of what
he is capable of doing, and we saw that in
the waning moments of the fourth quarter and help set
up the go ahead touchdown and the winter.
Speaker 5 (25:54):
If they're gonna go on the road and and beat
teams like San Francisco, they're gonna need huge games from him.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
We might look back.
Speaker 5 (26:00):
If he starts to really play well at that play
and if the Jaguars make a deep run this year,
we might look at that place being one of the
most significant plays of the season.
Speaker 6 (26:09):
Yeah. Look, nobody is saying that that's automatically fixed. And
I get people watching this or well, he had drops
and he did. They absolutely need him to be the
alpha because it's kind of shown in the last couple
weeks when he's not. There's really not a one to
(26:29):
replace him in the unit yet, So he's got to
play bigger and better. And I think the hope is
that that play is what sparks it all.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Right, Brian, what's your hot take forth today.
Speaker 5 (26:39):
So staying with the takeaway theme, because nine takeaways after
a year in which they only had nine. The Jagars
have had three great defenses in their history ninety nine,
two thousand and seven, twenty seventeen, So where does this
one come in. I just thought it'd be interesting to
take a look and see relative to takeaways. So it's
thirty times four meeting three defenses two and seven, twenty seventeen,
(27:04):
and ninety nine all had at least thirty takeaways, and
I think the Jaguars are going to find themselves joining
that club this year. I think the Jaguars of twenty
twenty five will have at least thirty takeaways by the
time the season is done. John in ninety nine they
had nineteen interceptions and eleven fumbles recovered, in two thousand
(27:25):
and seven they did twenty and ten, and in twenty
seventeen they did twenty one to twelve.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
So thirty three takeaways is the franchise record, and.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
I think that this team, I don't know whether they'll
have the franchise record or not.
Speaker 3 (27:36):
And twenty seventeen also scored.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
Seven defensive touchdowns, so I mean that's a great defense
and I'm not trying to correlate the two, but I
think that this defense is impactful enough, and we're seeing
already that they can become the fourth Jaguars defense to
have at least thirty takeaways.
Speaker 6 (27:48):
Yeah, and I think what will help this defense is
I think this offense, and everybody's down the offense from yesterday,
but they had twenty six and twenty seven in the
first two games, and it was encouraging the immediate Liam
con figured out what was going on with the running
game in the first half, got it fixed in the second.
The defense will be helped because I think this team's
(28:08):
gonna have a lot of leads. As I said earlier,
it's hard for a defense to have mega turnovers when
they're trailing, and I think this offense is gonna happen
in the league quite a bit. John's hot take, well,
I'm gonna wait for the caption because I need to
see it.
Speaker 1 (28:23):
I have drawn a blank something about Trevor's bullying.
Speaker 6 (28:26):
Yeah, and no more no Moss, but in a different
way than Roberto Duran said it. I I have harped
all morning on the fact that they beat the Texans
in the style that the Texans usually beat them. The
Texans are used to coming in here and winning. They're
(28:47):
used to bullying the Jaguars. They used to the Jaguars
not making plays at the end of games. And I
think in the fourth quarter, when it started to cut
a swirl, I think the Texans thought they were going
to with the game and to turn it around and
then to come up with the big drive and to
say no, we're gonna beat you this way. As much
as people are down on parts of that game, don't
(29:10):
lose sight of the fact that the Texans were a
desperate team coming in here, throwing punches as well as
they could. The Jaguars took the punch in their two
and one, and I think that's a huge, huge game
for them.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
Yesterday, I know that when Christian Kirk caught the pass
that took the Texans offense down to about the what
the thirty six thirty seven yard line before Nico Collins bumble,
I thought.
Speaker 6 (29:32):
They were going to I felt.
Speaker 5 (29:33):
Like it were watching history repeat itself here with a
team that couldn't take advantage of their opportunities, had an
inopportune turnover, and they were gonna take a game that
by all rights they should have won because of the
way that the defense played and give it away.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
And then Tyson Campbell sparked the whole thing.
Speaker 6 (29:50):
How many times last year did we sit next to
each other in the press by and say here we go? Yep?
It was like it was that feeling, and the Jaguars said,
we're not going not doing that.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
They would have lost in years past, they did not yesterday.
For me, that Week three win is better for this
team where they're at right now than a blowout win
would have been for them.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Yes, that's all nice.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
When you blow out a team, you go in there
completely dominate, that's great to see. That's not where this
team is at right now. They're rebuilding this thing. They
are trying to set the tone. John talked about it earlier.
When the Colts find a way to win. I watched
the Patriots do it for a very long time. When
people just look at the box score, they go, oh,
they're dominant, They're winning all these games. A lot of
those games are not pretty, a lot of them are
really ugly, a lot of them they don't play well,
and then they just find a way to do it
(30:33):
at the end. Look at the Chiefs the past couple
of years, you think they're not playing very well, then
they do something crazy and they find a way to win.
Having the ability to do that and strike that into
another team, we're not quite there yet. That's the next
step of this is then when you start making a play,
the other team goes into the.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
Oh woe is me?
Speaker 6 (30:49):
Part.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
So that's where you've got to get to the point
where they feel if a team is playing you, that
you're getting to that point where you don't want to
give them anything because then they'll run with it. The
Daguars are learning how to get there, and it was
nice to see them do it in a game where
I didn't feel great about a lot of stuff except
maybe the defense.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
They still found a way to get a w.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
But you better learn how to do it in this league.
Speaker 5 (31:08):
Yesterday seven games were decided in the final minute, and
that's a league. Yeah, that's a record since the merger,
and the blowouts are just fewer and further between them,
and you're gonna get You got the one yesterday with
what the Vikings did to the Bengals, but most every
other game was decided in the final minutes.
Speaker 2 (31:27):

Speaker 9 (31:51):
You talk about staying with it right, highs and lows.
Speaker 6 (31:57):
We talked about that.
Speaker 9 (31:58):
How do we respond type and cable Brian Thomas Jones.
When you play complimentary football defensively yellow boys, Yes, it's
(32:28):
not It wasn't pretty in some ways. Understand that, guys,
it doesn't matter. You learn how to win.
Speaker 6 (32:35):
We learned how to win.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
I gotta learn how to win. Coach got me hyped
up there. And also the throwbacks just look so good.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
It's so much better when they're in the nice teal
and the prowlers, and then the graphics as well. If
you guys are at the game, they go full throwback
with everything.
Speaker 1 (32:52):
So it was nice to see it.
Speaker 5 (32:54):
And we get three more times with him this year. Absolutely,
by the way, great energy from the coach and in
the post in locker room, and I thought even last
week when they lost, he had great energy. That's the
thing when people want to know the difference between Liam Cohen,
the new age coach and some of the older guys.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
It's that energy level that he brings at all times.
Speaker 6 (33:11):
Yeah, these guys believe in it and that goes a
long way in this league. And they should believe in
it because they're doing things that are gonna sustain them
going forward. They're gonna be in games. I think it's
gonna be an interesting season.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
All right. We will be back with you guys on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
We'll hear from coach later on today, get some info
about some injuries that Iammy Brown bang up in that game,
so we'll get updates on all of that, and we'll
be back with you here in jag XAM on Wednesday.
