Speaker 1 (00:16):
Welcome to jag Zam this morning on tenhani seasons. Brian
Sexton John Osier with me.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It's week four.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
The Jaguars are two and one and they're heading out
on the road to San Francisco this week to take
on the.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Three and forty nine ers.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Let's go over some of our big things for you,
brought to you by de EHJA Government Employees Health Association.
Big Thing number one is dropped the ball. The Jaguars
got the win last week against their division rival Detections,
but they dropped the ball quite a few times in
that matchup.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
That's something we've seen an issue with throughout the first
couple of games. Brian, how do they fix this?

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Is it just getting some extra reps of the judge
machine or what?

Speaker 4 (00:49):
It's a mental thing.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
Listen, you don't go from Friday playing high school bawl
to Saturday playing college ball to Sunday playing Pro Bowl
by just being able to catch the ball.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
You're darn good at it.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
The reasons why right now nobody has laid out, so.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I'll just say it. It's not a physical thing. It's
a mental thing.

Speaker 5 (01:06):
Somehow, someway, they've got to connect the hands and the
brain back together. This is something all of these guys
not only do, but they do very very well. Otherwise
they wouldn't be playing on Sunday. The coach's job this
week is to reconnect the hands to the brain.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:22):
I loved when Liam was asked about this on Monday
and he kind of smiled. Every coach I've evercovered has
always been asked about drive passes. They tried to give answers,
and really, the realities, you don't know. Consentration has to
go up sometimes a circumstance, and sometimes you just have
to catch the leaping ball. And that's really where you're

(01:42):
at right now. They got to catch the ball, and
the problem is, right now it's holding so much back.
They could be so much more efficient offensively when they
do it. I think they will do it, but they
have to do it.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Leep. Yeah, I think that's fair enough to say.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
We're gonna move on to a second big thing, which
is the dec The defense has been dominant so far
for the Jags. Through these first couple of matchups. They've
already gotten to their.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
Takeaway total of all of last year.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
They've gotten more interceptions than we saw last season. John,
is this just a case of defense does well early
in the season or is this something we can expect.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Throughout the year.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Well, they're catching the ball.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
So they have that figured out receivers.

Speaker 6 (02:22):
You know, it's been three a game. Three a game
translates out to fifty one, and that's up there with
all time, So I don't think it's going to happen
like this all season. But I do think the way
they play, they're getting leads, they've only trailed eighteen seconds.
That helps you get turnover. The other team's under pressure,
and they're playing a style that enables them to look

(02:43):
at the ball and see it, which also helps turnovers.
So I expect them, Brian, to be a very good
turnover creating team. The pace will slow because it always
does off this sort of start, but I think it's
who they are.

Speaker 5 (02:57):
You know, last year, guy, the defense was historically bad,
and to hear you say the defense has been dominant
the first three weeks, it almost rings strange to me
because we talked about how bad they were last year.
But one of the reasons why it was so frustrated
was because there was some talent over there. We knew
there were guys that were capable of making plays Andrew
Anthony Campanili, bring the scheme together, ask guys to do

(03:20):
things that they know how to do and do very well,
and all of those puzzle pieces fit together. And when
they do, what do you get? Or you get production,
you get takeaways. You put yourself in a situation where
you can have success. I mentioned the other day, I
think this team has a chance to be the fourth
Jaguars defense in franchise history with at least thirty takeaways
in the season. It helps when you get nine in

(03:41):
the first three games. John's right. The pace will obviously slow,
but it's been a consistent part of who they are
the first three weeks, So even if they're just getting
one a game or two, it puts them in a
position to be among the better defenses we've seen in Jacksonville.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Certainly have a good head start on that for sure.
Our final big thing today is going to be on
the road. They're having out on the road the West Coast,
which has been a challenge for this team. I looked
up the records they're owing to at San Francisco, four
and eleven in the state of California.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Brian, what is it going to take to get a win.

Speaker 5 (04:10):
On their red Three of those wins obviously came in Oakland,
including the last win they had in the Bay Area
in twenty nineteen. What's it going to take takeaways? You're
gonna have to create extra possessions. These aren't the Niners
that were here two years ago. John, There's only two
guys on the defense now that Nick Bosa is injured.
Two guys who are part of that defense. But you

(04:30):
have Robert Sama, and he's an excellent defensive mind, so
that group will be ready to play. You got to
catch the ball, you got to create takeaways, and you've
got to take advantage of opportunities in the red zone.

Speaker 6 (04:41):
Yeah, you have to stop the run too. They're a
very good team when they get up on you and
they get into their style and their rhythm. They know
how they want to play, and once they start doing it,
they're hard to get out a rhythm. And now the
quarterback has to play well. I mean in this game,
I don't know if you can overcome.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
You can have a turnover, but.

Speaker 6 (05:04):
It can't be a backbreaker. It can't be one where
they're going in. It can't be in the red zone.
He has to play well and keep the waters calm
throughout the game. If it gets messy, they're a really
hard team to come back.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
On, you know.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
K It also bears mentioned the Dutch. Time the Jaguars
played in San Francisco was twenty seventeen, and they were
a really good team that year. And the Niners were
in the first year of Shanahan as the head coach,
and they had just traded for Jimmy Garoppolo with the
team you used to cover, and it was Garoppolo's first start.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
In Shanahan's offense.

Speaker 5 (05:39):
And I mean, they just took a part at the
best Jaguars defense in franchise history and won forty four
to thirty three. It's because Shanahan is an excellent offensive coach.
He puts together a great game plan. So it's gonna
challenge Liam Cohen and his entire staff because I think
Shanahan's got one of the better coaching staffs in recent memory.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Certainly a tough place to play. Stay with us here
on Jagszam. Coming up after the break. We'll do a
little this or that as we look ahead to that matchup.
Jag Zam brought to you by Field's Auto Groups. See
Fields First Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. You can head
over to Shields Auto dot com this this.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Schools, welcome back into jag Zam.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
This morning, we're gonna do a little this or that
as we look ahead to week four. We talked a
little bit about the drops that was seen from the
wide receiver groups beyond the Brown Brian Thomas Junior Parker
washtill a little bit in.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
The last game.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
So my thought here is Brenton Stranger most reliable target
at this point.

Speaker 5 (06:42):
He is no doubt dependable, tough, the guy that when
you throw the ball, you know ninety percent.

Speaker 4 (06:48):
Of the time he's gonna pull it in.

Speaker 6 (06:49):
He's uh to me, Brenton Strange. There's four uber frontline
players on this team, Trayvon Walker, Josh Heinz Allen, Jordan Lewis,
and Bretton Strange. He's one of the of the core
players in this team right now.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
It's high praise too.

Speaker 5 (07:02):
I mean you're talking about the tight end position and
there's so many gifted receiving tight ends in this game.
I'm not sure how many guys fit his category. John
which is the complete title.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
Yeah, I mean, he'll never I shouldn't say never.

Speaker 6 (07:15):
I don't know if he'll ever be acknowledged in a
Dorito's commercial like George Kittle or whatever Kill's commercial is,
because he's such a great blocker, and I don't know
that he's going to be a mega star receiver, but
he's a good receiver and he might be at all
the tight ends. He's the guy who could have played

(07:38):
in the sixties in Ben Ditka so too.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Is there a way to include him more in the
offensive game plan?

Speaker 1 (07:44):
I know there's a lot of people you want to
get involved and get going, but when you have someone
sure handed as him, is there a way to get
involved more?

Speaker 6 (07:50):
Yeah? I mean, I don't know if you want to
gear the offense to getting him enough targets to get
to one hundred and twenty yards. And again it's not
an knock on him, but if you gear everything toward him,
then you're shrinking the field a little bit, probably because
he's he's probably not the thirty five yard downfield, beat
the cornerback, and stretch the defense guy.

Speaker 4 (08:12):
But you can get him a little more involved.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
And listen, if these guys, if Brian then Parker, if
they don't catch the ball, the amy don't catch the ball.
He's going to be involved by default because that's going
to be the one guy that the.

Speaker 4 (08:21):
Quarterback is going to know, I get it there, he's
going to catch it.

Speaker 6 (08:24):
Also, at this stage of the season, you've got to
keep feeding BTJ, Parker, Washington these guys because you know
what you want the offense to be. And in Week
four you can't just say, well, we're not there in
the receivers anymore. We're going to be a running and
tight end team. I mentioned Ditke, it's not his league anymore.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Looking at Travis Hunter, we've seen him increase in snaps
every week. That's kind of gone along on both sides
of the football. But is there a way to get
him more involved in the offense at this point as well?

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Or is he still learning that playbook? Is this something
we might see down the road.

Speaker 6 (09:00):
I think they're gonna work to get him more involved
because I think like they have to. Because we saw
the play the other day, Brian the short pass one
yard game. I included it in my key plays because
it got him a field goal. Without that first down,
they don't get that drive, and in that game, field
goals are important. Nobody else on the on the roster

(09:22):
can do what he did twice on that play. I don't.
I think they're gonna have to work to do it
because I don't know that this year he is going
to be a top level route runner beat a guy
eighteen yards downfield on a on a great route yet,
but you have to figure out a way to have
his hands on the ball.

Speaker 5 (09:42):
Well, and listen, the offensive playbook is you know, inches thick.
It changes so much when you're looking at left corner
or nickelback or wherever they play him on defense. You know,
it's a half a bach. I mean, it doesn't change.
So he's having to learn so much on the offensive side.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Yeah, here's the one thing.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
You know, if the Omi Brown shoulder is going to
be a nagging problem, you have no choice.

Speaker 4 (10:04):
And we don't know that yet. We'll find out later today.
You know where he is on the injury board and
if he's able to go and play.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
But if the MBI can't play or is going to
be limited at all, twelve is going to have to
step out there and do more.

Speaker 6 (10:15):
Yeah. And I haven't beaten the drum for Travis Hunter
a whole lot because I still want to see how
it develops. But I've gotten some emails this week from
people saying, you know, he's been a disappointment, hasn't produced.
Look on offense, he's still getting going. He's a high
end cornerback already. Yes, he I mean, and there's no
doubt in my mind. I don't know what offense will

(10:38):
look like for him over a ten year period. I
know what defense is going to look like. It's going
to look like an All Pro player.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Makes Steven more frustrating with that PI penalty against the
Bengals because that could have been a calling card moment,
you know, ends the game and shows what he's been
on defense that we've seen as well. And Trebis let's
look at the defense a little bit. Jordan Lewis tremendous.
Can't say enough good.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
Things about him, leader on and off the field. Is
he the best free addition? Is he up there with
the best free agent editions this franchise have had?

Speaker 5 (11:03):
Yeah, I mean number one is clearly Kalais Campbell from
two thousand and what usually be coming in seventeen seventeen. Yeah,
for SACS in his first game, fourteen and a half
is a single season franchise record in that season and
of course he gave you, you know.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Three really good years. He was an All Pro player.

Speaker 5 (11:21):
If he approaches the single season record for interceptions, which
is eight, held by Rasheen Mappis, then you could talk
about him in the same category. That's a high bard
hit though eight interceptions is a lot.

Speaker 6 (11:33):
Yeah, and I think he's gonna be in the group.
Keenan McCardell was a free agent, Yeah, but Leon seous
he was a free agent. Kalais Campbell was a free agent.
I would put those guys and I'm probably even somebody
out because I wasn't here during the ten years or
I wasn't here. But Jordan Lewis in terms of reshaping

(11:54):
a position group and even a defense and being an
immediate leader, that's where he's on a par with kalaias
they already had leaders in the nine he's been Keenan
and and Leon got here.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
Jordan Lewis has.

Speaker 6 (12:11):
Unbelievably, to an unbelievable degree, become a leader and a
identity guy on this team.

Speaker 5 (12:18):
Listen, he gives him the opportunity because of his attitude
and the leadership that he has to be one of
those teams with thirty more takeaways right ninety nine, two
thousand and seven, twenty seventeen. If they hit that plateau,
then they go into one of the better defenses this
franchise has ever had. And I think it's his attitude
and his leadership where he said to these guys in

(12:39):
training camp, Kai, I don't care what happened last year.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
Were better than that, and we're going to be that
way on the field.

Speaker 6 (12:44):
And by the way, all the guys I mentioned, I
would put maybe not in the pride, but in the
group of great players in this franchise history, great teammates. These
guys would all those guys would love to play with
Jordan Lewis.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Oh. Absolutely, stay with us here on Jagsam.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
After the break, we'll go over some of the headlines
around the NFL. For twelve years, Dreamfinders Homes have been
proud to call themselves the official home builder of the
Jacksonville Jaguars. Is a Dreamfinders dot com to find all
of the available.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
Inventory and go Jags. Welcome back into jags Am. We're
looking ahead to this matchup in Week four in San Francisco.
A lot of injuries for the forty nine ers.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
That'll probably be some of them will game time decisions,
what they do with the quarterback whatnot. But we do
know now that Nick Bosa has torn his ACL, so
he's gone undergoing surgery. He will miss the rest of
this season. And he had this team in fits last
time they were here and that blowout win at Everybank Stadium.
I think he had one or two one and a
half or two sacks in that game. And timing for us,

(13:52):
I mean, very unfortunate, but he runs that defense and
that's good for the Jaguars, not great for both of
to miss the year.

Speaker 5 (13:58):
Wherever he lined up that day, he had to tackle
three yards heap in the backfield on the snap of
the ball.

Speaker 6 (14:04):
Yeah, I mean, he's a great player who his career
is now being defined by injuries, meaning when he's on
the field, he's fantastic and like a lot of that team,
that team, it is one of the more injury played
teams and I had injured. They are phenomenal. I still

(14:25):
think they're phenomenal, but we don't have Nick Bosa on
the field. It's a different team.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
This is a second ACL. He had one of twenty
twin too well, so.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
That makes it tough.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
I will say though, as much as they are oft injured,
you know McCaffrey as well, they step up and find
ways to win without and we've seen it so far
with Mac Jones coming in a couple of games and
getting them a win.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
They're three and zero right now, so they find a way.

Speaker 5 (14:48):
Mac said that he wanted to play with Shanahan, and
I set it off the top. Kyle Shanahan is a
guy I like to watch the Niners just because he's
so clever. There are so many different things that he does.
And of course his dad, when he was the coach
of the Broncos back in the nineties, was known for
that as well. I think he's an excellent offensive mind,

(15:09):
fun to watch, creates mismatches. I told you about that
day in twenty seventeen that was not as good a
team as the Jaguars that day, and yet they use
Kyle Jusak the fullback and it just turned the Jaguars
inside and out.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
That was Shanahan. I think he is one of the best.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
I let's check in around the AFC South. Obviously, we
played the Texans last week. Colts and Titans faced off
as well, and the Colts.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Are now three and oh. Titans are continuing to struggle,
obviously with their rookie quarterback and some other issues over there.

Speaker 6 (15:37):
But the Colts, for real, job, you know, they're three
and oh and they have a quarterback who is functioning
at a high level. I have not watched him enough
to know it is. He is sending into the upper
echelon his status.

Speaker 4 (15:55):
Sure say that he is.

Speaker 6 (15:57):
Having one of those Sam Darnold Baker Mayfield kind of resurgences.
And yeah, they're for real, and Tay find somebody and
beats them. Because they play in your division, They're gonna
play roughly the same schedule, so you know, don't let
them get too far away, because you're not always gonna
beat him here. No, even though they beat him here
ten years in a row at some way. Those things

(16:19):
in So, yeah, they're dangerous.

Speaker 5 (16:20):
They have a good roster and the problem was they
had no quarterback play they could rely on, which put
all the pressure on Jonathan Taylor. And now all of
a sudden, Jonathan Taylor has a quarterback he's running well,
and that's unlocking the abilities of the rest of the
roster of Shane Sikin to be able to play the
game that he wants to play.

Speaker 4 (16:39):
The question mark for me is.

Speaker 5 (16:40):
Can Daniel Jones stay at that high level and can
Jonathan Taylor stay healthy because he's had a variety of
foot and ankle injuries that have taken him off the
field late in the season, and that's just killed the
Colts playoff hopes at all. If those two guys stay healthy,
the Colts are a really good football team and.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
They can keep it going.

Speaker 1 (16:57):
So since he is key for Indiana, Jones and the
you know right now leading the AFC South, all right,
say with us one more break and we'll come back.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
Tell you what's coming up the rest of the week.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Jags fans, if you want customize dag wors furniture for
your homepick a zip cher, dot comor bows all the
customizable options.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
Zip Chair is furniture for fans.

Speaker 7 (17:26):
To win the week, finish the game, Hey, stay to connected.
We talked about BT Trevor the big time moment. Guys,
huge moment.

Speaker 8 (17:39):
They go zero and we get to seven man pro
pick it up, hit a bread and butter play huge
play guys to go win the game.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Here we go. JAG's have it on the left, hash
shotgun for Trevor Lawrence on the forty four yard line,
five man front for Houston. Now they're changing the play,
apparently dropping his Trevor looking fires middle of the field.

Speaker 7 (18:07):
That was taught thirty five thirty twenty five twenty Bryan Thomas.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Then it's the first down near the ten yard line
of the Houston Texas.

Speaker 5 (18:18):
How good is that.

Speaker 6 (18:22):
You play? Where did keep play?

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Replace at the running back? Trevor under center? They gave
us the Travis etn picks his way to the pop.
He's gonna walk into the end zone.

Speaker 1 (18:36):
That's a lot of mass.

Speaker 8 (18:42):
Make the last one.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
I know. That's what's a hoop matter.

Speaker 7 (18:49):
With the resiliency, the way that you guys are continue
in the state, connected through difficult adversity. Nobody pointing the finger.

Speaker 8 (18:58):
So really proud the way you guys played, man, really proud,
So congratulations to you guys.

Speaker 1 (19:05):
All right, picle moment.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
If you go behind the scenes there, natory check out
founds of the game. We'll have more on that. But
to get into the team meeting.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
Kind of see them talk down obviously, you know Trevor
checked out of that play and kind of set it up.
Played to Brian Thomas Junior going back to his old
stand by number one. Maybe he hasn't been making the plays,
but he made it when it counted and they won
the game, so there's something to be said for that.
And just seeing them all kind of rally around Brian
has been great as well, so hopefully get things back rolling.

Speaker 5 (19:33):
Liam Collen is radically transparent. I mean he tells you everything.
He tells you things you don't ask him because that's.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Who he is.

Speaker 5 (19:41):
He's got to buy John. He's got the type of
communicator he is, the type of leader he is. The
play caller is obviously something that we have seen from
his time at Tampa. You know, translate over here. He's
a lot of fun to watch and a lot of
hope for what this program will become based on his guidance.

Speaker 6 (19:57):
Yeah. I know I've said it before, but if you're
watching this, don't take for granted what you just saw.
If you're a Jaguars fan, not many teams in the
league would let you see that. It's groundbreaking stuff, and
it does give you a chance to see what Liam
Cohen's all about. His communication level, the way he communicates

(20:20):
with players is very unique and high end. I think
it's what's gonna give him a chance to be a
phenomenal head coach over his career, and you know, that
may have been a very important moment for BTJ and Trevor.
They've got to prove on top of that going forward,
but that might be a turning point moment for him

(20:41):
and for Jaguars fans to sort of see that how
it's reacted to.

Speaker 4 (20:46):
I've never seen it before and so very cool.

Speaker 3 (20:49):
It's been a while. It's very cool access to get.
We'll be hearing from the team today.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
I will try to see what the issues are with
Zammy Brown, whether he'll be available or not.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
And then tomorrow and jag ZAM, we're gonna do some
more deep dive into the forty nine ers and see
what we can expect from that week before matchup. To
be back here and dig VAM tomorrow
