(00:44):
Will review the Jaguars lost to the Steelers in preseason
Week one. The sky is falling around du ball. We'll
try to calm you down a little bit. Travis Hunter
update what happened on both sides of the ball for him,
and then a look ahead to this week of practice
in the Jaguars Saint preseason week two coming up. We
welcome and of course CBS Sports Senior writer Pete Prisco.
(01:05):
Tony Boselli's down the hall in another office these days.
Our new teammate on Monday Happy our former Jaguars defensive
lineman current UFC fighter Austin Lane. Welcome, Austin.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
So this wasn't my job, resume when you guys brought
me on to calm people down, Like I thought we
could just be honest after that first preseason game.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
But I wasn't told in the email we have to
calm people down. But I'm nervous now. Pete does not
calm anybody down. I got you at all.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Never. By the way, welcome to the insane Asylum, Austin.
We're gonna have it. We're gonna have a great time. Look.
I berated and abused the last.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Guy that'sat in the seat, so he ended up as
being a general manager.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
So if I berate and abuse you, you'll probably end
up being the champion of the world.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
And you're wait, see I like that. Yeah, we're moving on,
U man. I like it. You can watch it on
CBS apparently coming up too.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah. Yeah, that's a good that's a good thing.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
The deal.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
By the way, who who did you say was down
the hall?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
But silly who?
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Who? Oh?
Speaker 5 (02:04):
Yeah, that's right, what are you talking about.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
He's gone, it's sober, he's upstairs.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
That's what I'm saying he's down the hall, he's you know, okay,
But I'm curious if he has rabbit ears like the
last guy.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Of course he does, of course he does. You know
he's gonna have rabbit ears? Are you kidding me? Now,
he'll do it in a playful way. He won't do
it in a mean, nasty way, right, I think.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
I would hope so.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
But to be honest with you, man, is it true
that did you bully him into the EVP job or
did he take that job willingly?
Speaker 3 (02:41):
No?
Speaker 2 (02:42):
A little bit of both, I think.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Okay, okay, I a little.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Bit of both.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
I mean, look, it was. It's a great opportunity for him.
I'm happy for him. I think he's great in that job.
He's be great in the role. But what it really does,
if the thing goes rotten, it gives us. It gives
us a layup on every week.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Oh yeah, that's the low hanging fruit there, Pete.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
I mean, and now he's not only that, he's dressing
like Gladstone.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Oh we had how about Pete? We had both those
guys on together the last three weeks on the Liam
Cohen Show. We don't have the coach yet until the
regular season. So it's been Gladstone and Bisselli together and
it's like the movie Twins, remember that one where it's
like Schwarzenegger individo by wrong.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Though when he used to come on the show, he'd
wear a T shirt or he button down shirt or something.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Now he's wearing these Lulu Lemon hoodies or whatever. He's
dressed like wets.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
And these short shorts. Well, all of a sudden, they're
back in style. It's ridiculous. Listen, I'm gonna shout.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Out to you should come in a hoodie. You should
come in a hoodie.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
One day.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
So, and I don't know, James Gladstone and some of
these coaches actually did a science experiment at training camp
because we saw one day James Gladstone was rocking actually
like a full fledged hoodie, which was insane to me
because we're talking about like ninety degrees. Yeah, practice, And
if you're the GM of the Jacksonville Jaguars, why you
got a sweat you know? I mean, I'm wearing a
tank top. As far as i'm you can't tell me nothing.
(04:04):
I brought Travis Hunter here, but we saw him in
a hoodie, so I was like I was curious if
I were a hoodie out to practice for the full time,
how much you know, how much weight would I lose?
Speaker 3 (04:13):
What would my heart rate be? Just standing there?
Speaker 4 (04:15):
And we actually measured out. I was talking, I was,
I was talking to some of the other but you
were standing there. It wasn't I mean I was passionately
arguing sometimes too, but you.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
Were standing there. I was pastially arguing.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
By the way, burned eight hundred calories, lost five pounds,
So don't just say I was standing there. Okay, the
heart right got up to one hundred and thirty five,
my resting heart rate sixty.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
So I was doing some work out there, Pete.
Speaker 5 (04:37):
Wow, So so wait, so you lost five pounds just
standing there.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
I can't stress enough you guys.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I was.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
I was in it.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
I was kind of jogging a little bit, trying to
see like the team's periods.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
They had a goal line period.
Speaker 4 (04:51):
I couldn't see anything, so I had to kind of
drag a little bit around the field to see that
goal lion period.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
I was working out there the day.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
The day I was there at training camp is the
hottest day in Jacksonville history, I think, or.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
One of them.
Speaker 5 (05:03):
Remember I think it was one hundred and one that
day and JP drags me out into midfield to talk
to the fans before before practice, and half of.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Them hated me and half of them loved me.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Right, that's about right, And that's what I expect.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
That's that's what you want, that's what you want. See
right now, everybody loves Austin right the new.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
Guy comes in, former player, everybody love it, give him,
give him a month, you know of half hating him
and half loving them.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
That's just the way it is.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
After the first loss of the season. Guess what if, Austin,
you're out there and uh, you know, as honest as
you want to be, you're going to hear it from
both sides.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
I think that defense play the other night Austin would
have been starting even in his age.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Right now, is.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
This overreaction, Monday Peene?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
It sounds like you, Well, look, I'm one of those guys.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
When I look at the PRECISA, I can't analyze it.
I can't break it down. What was the Jaguars record
the preseason last year?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Three?
Speaker 5 (06:06):
And okay, enough set a good team, but he can't
evaluate it. You're playing against guys that will be working
you know in on Wall Street or bouncing at a
bar in a couple of weeks. You know, it's just
you can't evaluate it. It's you hope to see some things,
(06:27):
little things, but the big picture evaluation cannot be done.
It just can't be done. Now, I'll say this, that
was a sloppy team. That team was sloppy the other
night in a lot of ways. And you know, we
look at the defense. Can I watched the tape this afternoon.
I can't tell you how many times JP where the
call is coming in and they're looking at each other,
(06:49):
pointing at each other, and the Steelers are running the
play right, I mean, they were just they were not
in any sort of rhythm and sync at all on
defense and it showed up and Cap Pinelli's too good
at coach for that.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Could be a problem.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
So I don't know what the disconnect was or why
it happened, but that was a major issue for them
on defense the other night.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
So that was one of the things for the pregame
show that I was gonna watch because if you know Camp,
you know coach Camp he does in terms of schemes
and coverages, they can be a little complicated. Now, Granted,
it's the preseason, so it's gonna be meat and potatoes, right,
But I did see some guys out there turn around
kind of hands up and everything, and the ball's getting snapped,
and I get it. Okay, it's the first preseason game,
(07:32):
but I feel like some of those things, along with
those penalties, those things.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Can carry over to the regular season.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
So I think those are some things to be cautious
about a little bit where you got to clean them up.
You got to clean up the pre snap penalties, right,
those they get cleaned up. And obviously you can't have
guys turning around wondering what you got when you're in
zone coverage because in the real game it's gonna happen
even faster.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Yeah, And they actually worked on that today. Pete coach
going after practice today, was like, hey, we didn't have
pads on. Weich had helmets. And that's what it was about.
It was about communication. It was about all of that
being in the right spot on defense mainly, but on
both sides of the ball.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
You know, Austin, you made a good point. It was
vanilla as vanilla can be.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
And they were still having communication problem with what happens
when it starts getting complex. I mean, that's the scary
thing about it, because when I watched practice, I'm sure
you guys have been out there more than me. They
seem to really grasp it and they love it, and
they loved the complexity of it and being able to
show double a gap mug blitzers and backing out of
it and dropping guys out and blitzing guys. Well, they
(08:35):
didn't do any of that the other night, and they
still had busts and really seemed to be lost at time.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
So that is a little concern.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
I'm glad they went back and did a mental day
today rather than go out and do something physical.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
I think that makes a lot of sense. I think
Liam Cole was smart to do that.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Jaguars Happy Our TENTIONONEXLAM, Jaguars dot Com, Jaguars YouTube JP Shadrick,
Pete Prisco and Austin Lane. It's the first show of
the twenty twenty five season. How about the offensive performance.
The starters go one drive, guys, they go twelve plays,
field goal penalties, full start on the first play of
the game. It's never ideal. And then the double penalty
(09:13):
negated one of the Travis Hunter catches a little bit later,
but they overcame gotten field goal range and got at
least something down the field too, and they extended to
drive with a fourth down play as well. That right here,
we're looking at it on Jaguars dot Com. Overall, Austin
from the starting offense, what did you gather if anything?
Speaker 4 (09:33):
I mean, we just saw that play with Towammie Brown
getting picked up and carried back. I've seen a couple
of yards there. I can't believe that wasn't a full
fledged fistfight. I feel like if you do that ten
years ago, there's gonna be players on the sideline coming
to have his back, man, because it's almost like the
sign of disrespect. We picked somebody up and kind of
carry him back a little bit. But in terms of
this offense, the biggest question for me was what does
(09:53):
Trevor Lawrence look like? And I thought for the most part,
I thought he commanded the offense. Well, he had a
nice pass to Breton Strange where it wasn't the first look,
but he I think it was a second look. He
looked calm collected back. There there was one instance where
the pocket broke down a little bit and he took off.
You know, the old Trevor Or. Yeah, the old Trevor
would have probably stayed back there a little longer, try
to make something happen, and maybe it's a fumble.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Right.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
So I think overall, you didn't get the ball in
the end zone against a lot.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Of twos, right, And that's gonna linger with that offense.
I'm sure you know.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
That's something that they talked about after that game. But overall,
I think Trevor Lawrence being the most important cog of
that machine.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
I thought he looked pretty damn good.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
Yeah, And I think everything that he's worked on carried
over to the game. The motion was quicker, the mechanics
were better, the feet weren't as elongated, he was tighter.
Speaker 2 (10:43):
Everything was tighter, quicker, and the ball got out.
Speaker 5 (10:46):
That was what I wanted to see because he talked
about it all offseason. You wonder, though, would it carry
over when when guys start getting around him and hit
trying to hit him.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
And it did. And so I think you made a
couple points on two plays.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
The one that's strange was really that's that's big boy
football right there. You look come over to the right,
you open to your right, you come back and then
you hit him in the middle of the field and
throw a pitpoint pass where he's pretty pretty decent coverage
on that play. That was impressive to me. That was
a good play.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Now, the one where he took off and ran. I
didn't like that one, And I'll tell you why.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
And I'll tell you why.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
You go back.
Speaker 5 (11:26):
Yeah, here, if we go back and run this play again,
he's got Parker Washington on a cross or if he
wants it. He also has Travis Hunter wide open if
he wants to throw it. And that's the first time
I watched the All twenty two tape today. It's the
first time we'll see Travis Hunter jumping up and down
(11:46):
complaining about I'm.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Wide open and I get the football.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
It wasn't like he was mad, but he was jumping
up and down because he's clearly wide open between the
between the safety and the corner and.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
He doesn't look at him. Now. I don't know what
the progression is on that play. I imagine that's the
last one, but he was open.
Speaker 4 (12:03):
Yeah, I think there's in terms of like that internal timing, right,
I think we're seeing a guy now that's making the
decisions a little quicker.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
If he doesn't see what he likes, he takes off.
Speaker 4 (12:10):
Could he have hit that shot, absolutely, but he did
get three yards out of it.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Now you know, it wasn't a game changing run by
any The only thing he don't No, I don't want
to see if head first diving crazy in the first place.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
But don't you Washington. He had Parker Washington on the
little crosser in that scenario. Give it to him. Take
yourself out of the equation.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
Give him the ball Parker Washington takes to hit, not
your star quarterback.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
That's that's why I think he should have gone there, right.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I mean, it's hard to retrain that though.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
That's what it was better. It was better. It was quicker,
the motion was quicker, the mechanics were quicker.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
He seemed comfortable, the ball got out. It was it
was different. It looked different, and he looked different. I
think that's a good thing.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
I think we can also celebrate too that, you know,
in terms of the screen game, which has been lacking.
I feel like, I don't know the past decade, maybe
since I hadn't played. In terms of screens and everything,
I thought they showcased a couple of screens. That's obviously
gonna be a staple in that Liam Cohen offense. And
Travis Etn had one the Jets sweep to to Dowmmy Brown,
which I'm not sure if you want to show that
in the preseason, but it looked great.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Prepare for it. You got it on tape.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
Yeah, but if you go to practice, if you go
to practice, they run that player.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Everyone's you've seen it, right. I love I like that call.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
It's it's a quick you know, you think you're gonna
hand it off inside and you get a quick, easy
turn and give him the back and he's around the corner.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
It's easy.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Now, I'm with you on the screen game. I think
that's something they need to get back to. And Etn
is pretty good the screen game. I'll say this about
the running back position and we get we'll.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Get into the I just there's a lot.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
But again, I like the offense.
Speaker 5 (13:47):
I like the you know, it was very critical design
of the offense last year.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I hated it.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
He loves buble screen. I know, Austin, you're new, welcome
to the show. You Pete loves bubble screens.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Okay, well, I don't mind bubble screens, but not when
you're run thirty five of them again.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
I mean, you know, left right one.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
They're one series where they ran a bubble screen to
the right, a bubble screen to the left, and came
back and ran another one did the right last year.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
I mean, he's just got to get created to get
the ball down the field. I think they will get
the ball down the field eventually.
Speaker 5 (14:16):
You didn't show a lot of that the other night,
but they will get it down the field.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
All right. Plenty ahead, We got plenty of time to
dig into this a little bit more. The running back room.
Apparently Pete wants to dig in there. I'm all about it.
That's a competitive group.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
I think, or competitive should it be?
Speaker 3 (14:33):
Okay, ah, that's the thought. We'll get to that coming up.
Jaguars defense ahead. We've got fanatics, fan questions in the
second hour. We'll keep it real as we always do.
That's all coming up in the second hour as well.

Chair Furniture for fans. We are often running in twenty
twenty five. It's Jaguar Yours Happy Hour presented by Jet
Home Loans.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
It takes us just coming in being ourselves every day,
being through to ourselves. As far as we obviously know
it's a physical sport. We all want to come up
with are the physical. But at the end of the day,
it's either you're gonna win or you're gonna lose. I
don't nobody want to lose, So coming there with that mindset,
I feel like as far as with our defensive perspective,
we want to be physical, we want to stop and run,
and that's our main focus.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
First. That is Trayvon Walker earlier today after practice discussing
how to establish a defensive identity. It is Jaguars Happy
Hour presented by Jet Home Loans. We're on Tintin xl
Amjaguars dot Com, Jaguars YouTube JP Shadrick Austin Lane in
Jacksonville from Hyundai Studios of the mill Or Electric Center,
(16:00):
Go CBS Sports Senior writer as always down in South
Florida and good to hear from Trayvon Walker there. And
you know, he didn't get many snaps in the game,
but I think his point is good. You have certain
things you want to do as a defensive Pete. It
feels like you really get an identity once you play
some real football games. That's when you're really gonna find
(16:21):
out what it is.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
But he talked about stopping the run. The Steelers didn't
run at all. I mean they weren't. They weren't very
good at all run of the football. So I think, yeah,
they have to they have to be better against a run.
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Let's be real, the way they're constructed right now on
the offense defensive side of the ball, they're not good
enough to stop the run in a regular season game
with what they have on the field. Defensively, I don't
think they need they need Armstead on the field. They
need Mason Smith on the field. They need those guys playing.
You know, Armstead, I hadn't played at all one How
(16:56):
long has he been out.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Now, I mean a fit actually, I think probably about
a week or so with the back injury.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
But he was father than that because he wasn't practicing
when I was there.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
That's right. But then all of a sudden he sits
out the scrimmage and that's when a lot of people
notice for the first time, I think, And then they said, oh,
he's got a sore back.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
Well, here's something that and I'm not just saying that
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
His situation, but I'm going to say this as a.
Speaker 5 (17:21):
Big picture of the National Football League right now, Injured
and hurt are two different things. And we're seeing a
lot of guys sit out with stuff that back in
the day, even when Austin played, they might have played
and practice.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
And so you go all around this league right now,
there are so.
Speaker 5 (17:41):
Many guys sitting out practice all across the league.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
I mean it's incredible.
Speaker 5 (17:46):
Every stop I've been to, this guy's not practiced with
twelve guys out this week, this day.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
So I'm concerned.
Speaker 5 (17:55):
Armstead right now is a major issue for that team,
as Smith is a major issue for this team.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
They have to be on the field.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
What we saw the other night, did you see any Austin?
Did you see anything from the defensive interior?
Speaker 3 (18:10):
So this would make no not at all.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
And this is really my biggest takeaway from this defense
right now, Like it doesn't matter if you have the
bookends on the outside with with Trayvon Walker and Joshua
hinz Allen, your defense will only be as good as
your interior defenders in terms of defensive tackles allow you
to be and right now it seems to be lacking.
And if you want to talk about Eric Armstead and
you want to talk about the back injury, I mean,
(18:33):
I think Jaygars fans have a little PTSD in terms
of back injuries around this place.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
From you know, years ago and everything.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
So like that, that just that and in general doesn't
sound good. And obviously, being the preseason, we don't know
the extent of these injuries right We don't know what's
going on with Mason Smith right now. But I would
think that if Eric Armistead could truly practice, I hope
that he would because keep in mind, I understand that
he had a very you know, he had a great
career in San Francisco. You know the prior GM brings
(19:00):
him over here. He plays out a position for the
most part last year with the old defensive coordinator. They
get a new regime and everything. But if I'm Merrick Armstead,
I want to make that good first impression because as
far as I'm concerned, James Gladstone, UH coach Camp, coach Comb,
they don't know, they don't owe me anything. Like as
far as I'm concerned, I still have to prove myself.
(19:22):
So you know, if it's a lingering injury where it's
kind of here, I would hope that he you know,
it's a serious injury where he can't be out there,
because if there's if you're teeter tottering, you probably should
be out there. And as far as Mason Smith's concerned,
you know, everything that I've heard is he was you know,
he was training really hard during the offseason.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Has this injury. We're not sure how long he is
going to be out of But.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
At the end of the day, in this coach camp defense,
you can have all the different coverages you want, but
you can't make up for deficiencies on the interior defensive line.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
I will say this about Mason Smith, the guy's peete.
It's you know, he's been working off to the side
out in the open practices.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
What injury.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
It looks like lower body. One of his lower legs
is wrapped. They haven't said officially what it is.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
It's like it's like hockey now. They're just a lower
lower dud.
Speaker 5 (20:09):
But you're right though, also because I heard the same
stuff that he had been just a madman all off
season and he'd gotten into really good shape, and they
were counting on him being a big part.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Of what they were going to do.
Speaker 5 (20:21):
So it has to be this one has to be
frustrating for him personally.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
And the team. Armstead is a veteran. Camp ain't fun.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Okay, let's be real. Camp isn't fun. Nobody likes it.
But I'm not saying he's jaking it because I don't know,
and we don't know the extent of the injury.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
And teams, by.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
The way, do it players disserviced by not telling you
what the injury is?
Speaker 2 (20:46):
What?
Speaker 3 (20:47):
What is it?
Speaker 2 (20:47):
What exactly is his injury? Is it a disc injury?
Is it just a tweak in the back?
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Is it?
Speaker 2 (20:55):
What is it?
Speaker 5 (20:56):
And so now what's out there is where? And they're
speculating on is.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
He jaking it or not right?
Speaker 5 (21:04):
And so if I'm Eric Armstead, I'm going in front
of everybody saying, look.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Dude, this is what my injury is. I have a
disc herniated disc or whatever it is. If he does
have that, then say it.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
We the NFL has become so paranoid about the injuries,
but then they don't ever look at the other.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Side of it. It exposes him.
Speaker 5 (21:27):
It opens them up to criticism that maybe he doesn't
deserve right if he has a bat a truly a
herniated disc or something wrong with his back, he should
say it.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Fair. I mean, it's fair.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
But at the same time, I feel like, now with
social media and everything, if something truly was wrong, what's
to stop a player from just going on online.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
And he's got his own podcast. I mean, like, listen,
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Like calling him out for jaking.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
I love this guy already.
Speaker 4 (22:01):
No, But I mean, I think if it is serious,
if it was me, right, and obviously I'm the modern
era NFL player, right, so I'm watching everything, I'm putting
my name in Twitter and I'm searching it up, and
I'm seeing what people are saying about me.
Speaker 3 (22:15):
Well, what they're saying about me now probably isn't the
most positive, right.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
So if that's the case, then I'm gonna go maybe
against coaches wishes of hey keep on the dot. No,
I'm gonna be like, here's what's going on. I'm actually
hurt and hopefully I'll be back soon. Like that's that's
what I would say. It could be cryptic, It could
have some rap lyrics to it too, if you want
to do that, because a lot of players are into that.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
But whatever the case may be.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
But I'm gonna put something out there to let people
know exactly what's going on.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
But you know, you talk about it, go against coaches wishes.
Speaker 5 (22:42):
I remember back in the day when Coughlin used to
tell players, don't say anything.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
About your injuries. And I remember walking up to Hardy Nickerson.
I go, how's your leg? He goes, well, I'm not
allowed to talk about it. I go, it's your leg.
It's your damn leg. It's not their leg, it's your leg.
It's Eric arch Send's back.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
Yeah, And I don't think what's going on with him
because you know, you hear it.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
You guys live near I've heard a bunch of it.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
There are a lot of fans out there who are
questioning his heart and desire right now to be on
the field, and as long as in Austin as well.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
By the way, I.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
Look rightfully so, because they'd exposed him to that, you
should just make it go away.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
He can make it go away. They can make it
go away. What's the damn injury? And how long is
he going to be out? Not just let where is
he he's not practicing? You know, what I mean, it
just leaves it open.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Fred Taylor's injury was legitimate, clearly, I mean, the thing
was off the bone, but they all called him day
to day back then, right, Pete, instead of just saying
what it was.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
As soon as it happened, he was day to day.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
And that thing was ripped off the bone so badly
that it looked like he got shot with a sniper,
you know. And that's how bad it was. And he
dropped the ball. Fred dropped the ball, He fumbled. That's
how bad that was day to day. And so what
happened with Fred Taylor is it became well, why is
any back?
Speaker 2 (24:02):
He's day to day? Why is he back? Well, the
thing was ripped off the bone. This is this We
don't know if this is the same type of scenario.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
But that's the point.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
Two things are at play here.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Though.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
There's only two things.
Speaker 5 (24:13):
Either he's really hurt and they need to say it,
or he needs to say it, or he's not really
hurt and they're frustrated like crazy the fact that he
isn't practicing. That's the only two things at play here.
So neither one is great, by the way.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
No, but Pete, even in the fact, because listen, the
the MO of this organization, this regime, whether we're talking
about James Gladstone, talking about Tony Basselli or head coach
Liam Cohen, them has been to keep everybody in the
loop right to kind of peel the curtain back a
little bit and take us behind there, Like, are you
a little surprised that we don't know what's going on
right now? Because when Week one starts, we'll know. So
(24:49):
what competitive advantage do you have right now by kind
of keeping it, you know, under wraps, not telling anybody
from a couple of weeks down the line, when it's
week when you're playing Carolina, then we'll all know.
Speaker 5 (25:00):
Could tell you I was around a couple of different
spots and and you know, people talking this league and
they're they're looking for a defensive they're looking I mean,
you know, they're the people may they know the Jaguars
are looking so and they signed one. I mean, they
did sign one, right, so they need more. And if
if Armstead and Smith aren't around that group that's right
(25:22):
there on the field right now, isn't good enough?
Speaker 7 (25:24):
Just isn't.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
We've got plenty ahead. We'll return and get in the
running back room. We'll see who Austin's gonna accuse of
something in that room coming up.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
Pete's it gets not even a half hour in.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
The team's doing that to them or he's doing it
to himself, one or the other. Austin's not wrong.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
Austin's gonna fit in just fine, I think on this show.
UH JAG's Football is officially back. Be there as Travis Hunter,
Trevor Lawrence, and new head coach Liam Cohen take the
field for the first time during the twenty twenty five
regular season when the Jaguars take on the Panthers at
the Bank September seventh. Go to Jaguars dot com slash
tickets for cold nine oh four six three three two thousand,
(26:12):
well discuss who will be played running back in that
game for the Jags. When we come back, it's Jaguars
Happy Hour presented by Jet Home Loans.
Speaker 7 (26:23):
Ultimately, it's something that takes no talent to do, and
you know, we can't beat anybody. This is something we've
been preaching for a long time since we arrived, was
we cannot start to beat people until we stop beating ourselves.
And that has remained pretty consistent since February or wherever
(26:45):
it's been so Yeah, frustrating for sure.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Liam Cohen after the game Saturday on the penalties for
the Jaguars Welcome Back Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Jet
Home Loans from the Hundai Studios of the Miller Electric Center.
Coming up in two at five o'clock. We have fanatics,
fan questions, and we'll keep it real. That's all coming
up in a little bit. JP Shadwick, Pete Prisco, and
(27:09):
Austin Lane the first Monday Show of twenty twenty five
on ten TXLAM, Jaguars dot Com and Jaguars YouTube. Jaguars
running backs Travis et and Junior officially got the start
on the Saturday night. He played twelve snaps in the game.
Tank Bigsby fifteen snaps in the game, with Quinn Allen
the rookie sixteen the base Shoal Teuton had twenty and Jackson,
(27:33):
the other rookie, had two snaps in the game. And
in terms of their production in the running department, Bigsby
six for twenty four, Tooton six for twenty four in
a touchdown, Etn two for six had some passing game work,
and Touton had a couple catches in the passing game. So, Pete,
we've been waiting anxiously for your take on the running
(27:54):
back room.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
Well, because the entire offseason, everybody kept saying that Bigsby
was going to be the start arting running back and
I never bought that.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Why But I also no, I just don't think I don't.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
Look, he's a nice runner, he's a puff runner, but
I don't think he's.
Speaker 2 (28:12):
What they need at running back.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
I don't think Etn is the guy either. I think
Twton will be their starting running back. Now might not
happen on the first game, but at some point it'll happen.
And here's why we saw that the other night. The
reason why not you're playing a preseason game. So, but
you've seen glimpses of it this entire when he's been
(28:36):
on the field. I know he's digged up a little bit.
There was a play, and I'm gonna start with Etn.
There was a play early in that game where he
took a hand off and right tackle Anton Harrison just
blew his guy down the line and all Etn.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Had to do.
Speaker 5 (28:58):
And I'm thinking about Fred Taylor and his heyday put
his foot in his put in the ground and pop
it behind that block as he drives it.
Speaker 2 (29:07):
He beat him so badly.
Speaker 5 (29:08):
He's down the left, He's on the left side of
the line. That's how he caved it in. It was
and he runs for about twenty yards and instead he
ran smack dab into the guy that Anthon Harrison was blocking.
Didn't didn't cut, didn't try and pop outside, didn't try
and go that way, went right into him. Later in
the game, when tots in the game and the backup
(29:31):
lines in the game, there was a handoff in the
middle of the field that I don't remember the exact
yard age he was but it was a six yard
run I think he had where he started to.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
The right and popped it to the left. You saw
a little juice in there, a little cutback ability.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
Then later on when he scored that touchdown, there was
a little juice and a little power.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
The power wasn't in his in his scouting report, honestly.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
But if you went back and watch his college tape,
there was more of that than you see. I loved
him coming out. He was one of my favorite guys.
In fact, three of their rookies were on my annual
Better than team right twenty guys that I like better
than the scouts. He was one of them, and the
other two were the two offensive linemen who might have
(30:20):
been as good as any of the offensive linemen on
the field the other night. Mannheim was terrific at left
guard when he was on the field, and I thought
he would be a center, but he was really good
the other night and left guard.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
And Mylam was.
Speaker 5 (30:35):
The other one who played it right tackle and left
tackle and was good in those situations. So but Twoton,
to me, gives him what the other two guys don't,
the ability to take a run front side and be
able to take it backside the.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
Other guy's run right at it. You agree with me, Austin,
I mean, there's not a lot of wiggle.
Speaker 3 (30:56):
So I'm gonna say this with Etn.
Speaker 4 (30:58):
Yeah, I think that that pre season game, you know,
he didn't show the best vision, and if you want
to be a great back in this league, you have
to have the vision. I did hear rumblings that everyone
was on tanking biggsby be in the starting running back.
I never bought that either, because I think what Liam
Cohen's looking for here in terms of the backfield is versatility.
If you think back to last year, if you had
Bucky Irving, Rashad White, well, what can they do well?
(31:20):
They can well, Bucky every Moore can run, run between
the tackles. He's also a great receiver. And the one
knock on Bigsby is is how dependable is he in
the receiving game. And I think he's one of those
guys where if you see him in the backfield, okay,
it's gonna be power, it's gonna be inside zone. But
he's not gonna scare us in the screen games. He's
not gonna scare us, you know, doing a wheel orut
(31:41):
anything like that. So I think it's gonna be some
combination of ETN and Twuton. I think with Tuton obviously
right now it's can you take care of the football,
which is the most important thing, right and and time
will tell with that once he gets those true game experience.
But I think we're gonna see a running back by
committee for the first couple of weeks see how they do.
But my money right now is on Traves CTM being
(32:02):
you started running back until proven otherwise I would agree.
Speaker 5 (32:05):
I think on opening day he will be the running back.
It just becomes a matter of when Tooton takes over
as the guy. And you mentioned the fumbling because he
had fumbling problems at Virginia Tech, but he also fumbled
on the first day he was here, I guess, in
mini camp, and that.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Opened him up. But since that he's been really good
with the football.
Speaker 5 (32:22):
And you know, Tiki Barber once was a fumbler and
he kind of cured himself of that. Coauughland kind of
cured himself, cured him of that, and he wasn't He
wasn't a fumbler after that.
Speaker 2 (32:31):
So I just think holme run, pop put back ability.
I think they're both there with him.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
And the fact that he did show the power, that's
a good thing because that's.
Speaker 2 (32:42):
The one thing you were you know, I did see
it at Virginia Tech, but running with power in college
is totally different.
Speaker 5 (32:47):
To see it a little bit, even in his first
game in a preseason game is good to see too well.
Speaker 4 (32:51):
And I was pleasantly surprised by that because I'll be honest,
I wasn't watching a lot of ACC football last year.
Speaker 3 (32:56):
You know, I mean, you have to you have to.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
Sec where it just means a little more right and Obviously,
I'm from Wisconsin. I'm a big ten guy, so I
wasn't really, you know, too intrigued with Tutons game in
terms of running football between the tackles. But he showed
me something there and I was excited for that because
then it got me thinking, Okay, well, what is Liam
cohen ZMO?
Speaker 3 (33:14):
What does he like to do?
Speaker 4 (33:15):
He likes those two back formations, you know that twenty
one personnel twenty personel. I think he calls a pony package.
I'm not mistaken, or that's what he called it in Tampa.
So now if you have a combination of Tuton and
travesy Etn back there, I'm all for. And maybe you
throw Tank Bigsby in that mix as well. But like,
and I'm without getting too much x's and o's here.
(33:35):
I remember when Green Bay used to run this back
in the day with AJ Dillon, and I would have
been Aaron Jones, and teams got keen to it because
you saw, okay, well we got AJ Dillon, who's like
two hundred and fifty pounds.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
He's not going to be that receiver, so we set
the strong side to him.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
We have a linebacker account for Obviously, the passing of
Aaron Jones will go from there. Same thing happened in
Dallas when you had Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Ezekie
Elliott's the guy between the tackles and then you have
Tony Pollard was.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
The receiving back.
Speaker 4 (34:02):
Well, then you go to Indianapolis and you have Jonathan
Taylor and you have nim Hines. That kind of changed
the game a little bit because Taylor can be a
receiver as well. So now you had two essentially receivers
in the backfield causing mismatches. I think Liam con can
do that exact same thing here. He did it obviously
in Tampa Bay. And if you have etn if you
have Tuton back there, that could be a mismatch nightmare.
Speaker 5 (34:25):
Here's and you're right, but here's part of the equation
that we don't know. In Tampa Bay, Rashad White's one
of the best third down blockers in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
He'll put his nose right in there.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
The criticism of Ethen is he doesn't isn't great in
pass protection.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
We don't know if Tuton can do it, he might
be willing. Do you know who can do it? Alan
can do it?
Speaker 3 (34:49):
He is not scared of contact.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
He will stick his and by the way, he can
catch the ball out of the backfield too. I mean,
I just think if you look at the big picture
for this team going forward, ETN is probably not going
to be here next.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Year, right, I mean, no, he's not gonna get a
second contract, you would think, especially with all these draft
picks they just got this year.
Speaker 5 (35:10):
Okay, so you got to start peaking at some point
the season. You got to start peaking ahead. I'm not
to say that you start, but I think you still
have to win the job.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I mean, would have to win the job or whatever.
But I think their future is tooton. That's where I'm
at with that.
Speaker 5 (35:27):
I think he's their future, and it might be sooner
rather than later.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
I love home runs, but you know, I love though
the big play and he gives them that.
Speaker 3 (35:35):
Could ETN force their hand into another contract though somehow
with like a monster year or is that just too much? No?
Speaker 2 (35:42):
No, he is a running back.
Speaker 5 (35:43):
There's no way he's getting another contract, right. No, No,
not when you draft two and there's a million of
them out there.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
So no, he's not getting another contract. And by the way, the.
Speaker 5 (35:53):
James Cook contract. He hasn't got a contract yet from
the Bills. They've offered him a deal from what I heard,
twelve million year. You gonna pay, You gonna pay ETN
twelve million.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
They're paying them six and a half right now.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Pete, Well, they're paying James Cooked five and a half.
You're not gonna go from five and a half. You're
not gonna go from six and a half to twelve
with ETN.
Speaker 5 (36:12):
You're just not gonna do that. So you gotta start
peeking ahead. It's a cruel reality NFL. He was drafted
in the first round, had lived up to it. Not
going to get a second contract as a runner in Jacksonville,
He's just not.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
He kind of thought that was might be trending the
other way with the success of a couple of the
big name guys. Say one, right, all that, but it's
still the business of the league. And what is it
with running backs here?
Speaker 4 (36:35):
Two man doesn't matter if they're undrafted free agentsy like
a James Robinson or Traves etm like they have like
those breakout seasons where it's like this is gonna be
the guy for the next decade, it seems like, and
then you know they.
Speaker 3 (36:44):
Fall off a little bit. Wow, yeah, serious, what you know?
Speaker 2 (36:47):
What you do?
Speaker 5 (36:47):
You know what the cruel reality in the NFL is
you draft them, you run them into the ground, and
after four years you draft another one.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:55):
I say, there are millions of them out there, and
in certain situations you can.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
You can if you have the good offensive line, they're
gonna run the football. No, there aren't Barclays out there.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
There are guys like that dark Derek Henry's out there,
but there are there aren't James Cooks out there. Let's
be real, and so you got to ask yourself because
he worth twelve million dollars a year.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Let's come back in a moment and we'll get into
the specialists. Cam little from seventy the other night. How
do we open up with that? Oh, he had other
stuff to talk about.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
This is a kicker, kicker, that's why.
Speaker 3 (37:30):
That's apparently why. From the backyard to the beaches. The
Ford f one fifty with available pro Power on board
gives you the power of a mobile generator. Ford proud
partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. See your local Ford dealer today.
It's Jaguars Happy Hour, presented by jet Home Loans that
(37:57):
was a special moment.
Speaker 8 (37:58):
I mean, I think the group, you know, not only
the specialist I realized how how cool that was.
Speaker 3 (38:03):
But you saw the team just get.
Speaker 8 (38:05):
Behind Cam and they realized how talented he is and
the type of person he is, so they love him
to death. And you can just see that the excitement
not only for the for the team, but for him
and in our group. So pretty cool moment. Obviously it's preseason,
you know, we understand that, but it was so cool
to be a part of that.
Speaker 3 (38:26):
Seeth Farwell, the Jaguars special teams coordinator, after practice today,
Welcome back. It is Jaguars Happy Hour, JP Shadwick Priscoe,
Austin Lane First Hour presented by Jet Holme Loans seventy
yard field goal for Cam Little the end of the half.
They set it up, they get to play. They banged
the time out and Leam Cohen looked over and Cam
(38:49):
was like, yeah, let's go for it, and he got
it by about three yards. Austin, Yeah, it's wild, man,
not wild.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
From the fact that I took after the Jaguars game
is the past year or so, the big story's always
been like, Ah, the punter or the kicker, right, and
then no difference here because this was a trending topic,
as it should have been. But unreal kick, man. You know,
it's shame that happened in the preseason. It's not gonna
officially count. There's an asterisk next to it. But nevertheless,
he's keeping that game ball for a reason, man, because
(39:17):
that was amazing.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
You know, he's the best fourteen year old kicker I've
ever seen.
Speaker 3 (39:23):
It's amazing till he drives a carnelievable.
Speaker 5 (39:26):
He looks he's just some babyface candy booms the hell out.
Speaker 2 (39:30):
Of the ball.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
You know what the problem with this is now, anytime
in the game they get like inside seventy yards, the
fans are gonna be clamoring for a field goal, right,
no matter what you have four right, if.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
It's a sixty five yard or round. He made it
from seventy, don't worry kick it. What are you gonna do?
You gotta kick it. But boy, he's got a big leg.
It must be nice.
Speaker 5 (39:54):
And as much as I rip on special teams, and
believe me, I rip on them, you know, I told
Matt Lafleur the other day what I always say about
a kicker.
Speaker 2 (40:03):
If I was a head coach. We sit in the
green room when they miss him on Sundays, and I go,
if I were the head coach, I'd walk over there
and choke.
Speaker 5 (40:10):
I mean, I really wouldn't, but I'd say that, you know,
and because that's your only job in life is to
make your damn kicks.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
I say it all the time, make.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Your da all the time. You say that, make your
damn kicks.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
Yeah. In fact, those guys that barstool actually made a
T shirt out of that and started selling it.
Speaker 5 (40:29):
By the way, I think I would never see anything
from Marvin Meyer anything, not one thing, zero. But when
you look at their kicking game, no worries at all,
zero worries. And that's always nice. So that's reassuring. But
the kid's a great kicker, and and he's only scratching
(40:50):
the surface.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
Now.
Speaker 5 (40:52):
Having said that, we've seen kickers who are just unbelievably
good for short periods of time and then next thing
you know, you look over you go, what the hell
happened to him?
Speaker 3 (41:08):
Right?
Speaker 5 (41:08):
Think back to the history of this league and and
I'm gonna give you a couple of examps. Remember when
Jason Myers was in Jacksonville, ye right, big leg and.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
Boom it boom. It didn't work out well.
Speaker 5 (41:22):
Then he goes when he went to the Jets, No
Jets first was it?
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Jets first didn't work out? Then Seattle.
Speaker 5 (41:28):
He becomes a guy that doesn't miss kicks, and then
you wonder when that's gonna go bad, because it goes bad.
But this kid hasn't even scratched the surface yet of
what he is as a kicker.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
So he's a great weapon.
Speaker 5 (41:41):
You don't want to use him because he's a field
goal kicker, but it's a great weapon that.
Speaker 3 (41:46):
I mean when it comes down to kickoffs as well,
you got you've got to place it in certain spots.
He's been pretty good at that.
Speaker 5 (41:52):
This league has made the placing of the field of
the of the kickoff such a challenge now because I
hate these stupid rules.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
Yeah, and played football.
Speaker 3 (42:03):
Yeah that was the thirty five right? Is that? What
was thirty five? Ridiculous kickers anything?
Speaker 4 (42:10):
And it's funny too, man, because I talked to Josh
Scobey today and funny story about Josh Scobey. He was
actually in the bathroom. So he went to the game
obviously went to the bathroom before halftime. And actually missed
that kick and then came back and obviously was astonished.
But uh, listen to him rant about just like the
new rule changes, how they're not helping kickers, man. I mean,
he was. He was personally a victim, I feel like.
And he hasn't been in the game for a couple
(42:31):
of years now, man, but he was still pretty kicked
off about it.
Speaker 5 (42:33):
You know, the Jaguars had actually had good kickers in
their history. Mike Hollis there was the original kicker, was
a good kicker. Scobe was a good kicker. Now they
had a couple of years where they didn't where they
didn't quite work out.
Speaker 4 (42:46):
Didn't quite I had to burn some sage at the
stadium to try to, you know, get rid of that
curse for a while.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
I feel like with this team in kickers.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Who was your kickers when you were there? It was Kobe,
So you were good.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
I mean.
Speaker 4 (42:59):
And by the way, I knew how big of a
deal Scoby was when I first got to the league
my rookie year.
Speaker 3 (43:05):
His ego.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
Break the dude who was driving an Aston Martin. Okay,
that's exactly you're driving an Aston Martin. You're doing something right,
But and without getting into too much details, I actually
prevented somebody from fighting Josh Scoby one time because somebody
pulled a prank in the locker room and they asked
me who did it, and I knew who it was,
Josh Scoby, and I wouldn't give him up because I
(43:28):
knew Scoby was a cat and he was that big
of a deal. So I got in a fight in
the in a cold tub literally my first week of
training camp. Uh, just to defend Josh Scoby's honor and
not put his name out.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
Who'd you fight? We named names on this show, we
named names.
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Who'd you fight?
Speaker 5 (43:42):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (43:44):
Well, I don't think you guys remember him or not.
I don't girl, yea who won? He's doing good?
Speaker 4 (43:50):
Uh you know what, man, let's go and call that
a drug. It's a cold tub, A cold tub before
him throw trying to survive.
Speaker 5 (44:00):
I hope you were naked, but but yeah, the bottom
line is the kickers are they're their own breed. In fact,
speaking of jahway, when I was in Green Bay, McManus
was there and somebody had told me that the day
(44:23):
before I got there, the guys in the media were in.
Speaker 2 (44:26):
The locker room talking about how in the old days.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
Somebody would let him in, or you know, he was
staying in the locker room too long, or somebody they
weren't talk about the packers, and he started screaming, all right,
you guys, get out of here, now, get out of here. Now,
we've got enough of you, like in a typical kicker manner.
Speaker 2 (44:43):
And I said, you should have turned to him and said,
you're a kicker, crappy you think.
Speaker 5 (44:50):
And then he came over, and I happened to be
leaning on the ball you know where they put the
balls for the kickers come over, and he comes over
and he just has this kicker jackass mentality about them.
Speaker 3 (45:02):
You know, it's a good description.
Speaker 5 (45:04):
And I'm gonna sit there thinking, your only job in
life is to make your damn kicks, and it just
quit acting like you're somebody special.
Speaker 2 (45:12):
Now, if I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 5 (45:14):
He had a little reputation to of being kind of
a pain in the ass when he was Jacksonville too, right.
Speaker 3 (45:18):
But remember he got in trouble too later after the fact. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but.
Speaker 2 (45:24):
You know, so look, some Scoffy's a good dude. I've
know Scooby long Scobe's a good dude. He's one of
the good, good guy kickers. My Collins was a good
dude too, didn't it.
Speaker 5 (45:32):
But for the most part, kickers have a little bit
of an attitude.
Speaker 2 (45:35):
I would say around the NFL.
Speaker 3 (45:38):
It is you can't make a seventy yard kick without
a great operation getting to the kick itself either. So
let's point out Ross Mattisik, who's an All Pro and
Pro Bowl long snapper, not just snapping the ball, run
down the field and make a tackle and force a
fumble if he needs to. A good loving cooks fantastic.
That's why that group, the coaching staff of the special
(45:58):
teams is back, because you think is so organized, the
coverage game's good. They've got great specialists, and that goes
a long way, you know.
Speaker 4 (46:06):
I think it's something like these past couple years, you
haven't really appreciated it because you know, they haven't won
a lot of games, right, But when it comes down
to you know, whether you're the punch your logan Cook
pinning the ball with in the ten yard line when
the game's on the line, or you're kicking that game
winning field goal, then people remember it, right And hopefully
this year when we're talking about close games. The Jaguars
can win some of those, and we're celebrating the special
teams a little more because it is rare to have
(46:27):
I think a puncher like Logan Cook who is so elite,
and then you have a guy now with you know this,
this kicker kicking seventy yards. I mean, he's well on
his way to being elite as well, So hopefully they
can keep that going.
Speaker 5 (46:38):
What about the returner though, that's that's you know, where's
your where's your returner?
Speaker 3 (46:42):
Parker Washington?
Speaker 5 (46:44):
Yeah, but I mean and he did a good job
last year too, So if he ends up being better
even than he was a year ago, then you have
all of them.
Speaker 2 (46:51):
You have all you know, because I think they're they're
covered units.
Speaker 5 (46:54):
You saw the Lane kids going to be a hell
of a player on special teams.
Speaker 2 (46:58):
That's why they drafted him. So the special team should
be fine. You need.
Speaker 5 (47:02):
I don't think you'll be worried about the special teams,
but if the special teams is your best unit.
Speaker 3 (47:10):
It is an issue. Let's come back in a moment.
Our two of the program is next Fanatics, Fan Questions
and more. It is Jaguars Happy Hour, presented by Jet Home.
Speaker 7 (47:20):
Loans Alignment assignment, getting our cleats in the ground when
we have a call on both sides of the ball,
you know, uh fundamentals. We did a forty play alignment
(47:42):
assignment period of just getting the call, getting our cleats
in the ground, making loud guttural communication, getting the calls
in quickly. That was what we were really kind of
focusing on from an emphasis standpoint.
Speaker 3 (47:57):
Obviously, some of.
Speaker 7 (47:58):
These guys are gonna be a little bit soler that
played a lot snaps in the game, so we were
trying to really hone in on the mind. Got conditioning
out of it kind of as well. So that was
kind of the thought of today.
Speaker 3 (48:11):
That's head coach Liam Cohen, this afternoon or this morning
after the morning practice, Welcome back. It's the second hour
of Jaguars Happy Hour on Monday, presented by Mister Chubby's Wings.
Before the game, after the game, and during the game, JP, Shadrick,
Pete Prisco, Austin Lane and the Jaguars dropped the first
preseason game thirty one to twenty five to the Steelers.
(48:33):
Jaguars offense got one drive. The defense also had one drive.
Travis Hunter, who haven't even really talked about yet. A
lot had eighteen snaps, ten on offense, eight on defense.
Cam Little hit a seventy yard field goal with room
to spare at the end of the first half. The
Jags do have work to get done this week, getting
ready for preseason Week two against the Saints that's coming
up Sunday at Super Dome, and the Jags are planning
(48:56):
on having a scrimmage type feel on Thursday on the
practice field. And we got to first look at the
coaching staff, operation and everything in game for the first
time and it just felt like there guys that just
hearing Liam Cohen today, now we haven't been around him enough,
I guess a little bit to really dig into his
psyche of what he's feeling in his tone. But he
(49:18):
felt a little perturbed. I would say it's probably a
good word, Pete, coming out of that game with the
way they were missing some things alignment assignment, cleats in
the ground, can guttural communication or things. Those are the basics.
It felt a little perturbed to me. What do you think?
Speaker 2 (49:36):
Yeah, and rightfully saw you should have been. I mean again,
I watched the All twenty two.
Speaker 5 (49:40):
Today and I can't tell you how many ties, particularly defense,
you see guys spinning around, pointing around, looking around.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
And there were mistakes on the offense. And I like
the fact that.
Speaker 5 (49:49):
He took accountability for the throat of Brian Thomas play call.
Speaker 3 (49:54):
Yeah, I could have called him out a play.
Speaker 5 (49:56):
And you know what, when I was watching that play,
I said to myself, I said, there's no other option
there for him to throw the football. It's play action,
turn around and throw to him. You got to get
that safety to hold a little bit. He doesn't even
there's a guy out there, but he's not really running
around that will threat in the safety. So there's no
real threat for the safety. So this safety makes a
(50:18):
bee line right there. I mean, should Brian Thomas have
caught the ball, probably, And I guess he's dropped some
in training camp too, which is concerning. But but again,
the design of the play wasn't very good. You gotta
you know, if they had run they were I think
they were single high safety and they run, you know,
a couple of verticals up the field and make that
(50:39):
safety pick one, you're gonna get.
Speaker 2 (50:40):
Through the other one.
Speaker 5 (50:41):
So it's just I liked he the fact that he
took accountability on that play because he kind of.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
He had no choice.
Speaker 5 (50:48):
That's the throw on that play, that's the throw, and
he made a good throw.
Speaker 2 (50:52):
He just has to catch it, and he got blasted
on him.
Speaker 5 (50:54):
But I think today was a bad day for the
for the team in terms of ugly from what happened
the other day.
Speaker 2 (51:01):
Kind of fix it and try and fix it.
Speaker 4 (51:03):
Ye couldn't that throw by Trevor Lawrence still be a
little better, Maybe be a little lower to protect his
wide receiver a little more, because I almost felt like,
you know, Brian Thomas Tree had extend himself and it
left him a little more open to take that big shot.
Speaker 5 (51:15):
Yeah, maybe just a little bit better. But again, I
think if he peaks to the right when he opens,
you know, once he does that play fake, he turns
back around. If he just peaks for a second to
the right and comes back, he holds that safety for
a second because there is a guy out there, but
he doesn't really threaten nobody. Still, if you look that way,
you might hold him. That guy made a bee line
right as soon as he turned around. He made a
(51:37):
bee line for him. So, yeah, there was a bunch
of things that play there. The throw wasn't perfect, probably
should have been caught still, but no matter what happens,
he was getting hit.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
I don't care if he put the if he put
it right right where it's supposed to be, he's going
to get hit.
Speaker 3 (51:51):
Pete. To your point about BTJ and practice, it does
feel like that a little bit to me also, And
some of the practices there's the ball in the ground
a lot. Sometimes he's a couple of days, but so far,
when the lights have turned on, he's proven that he
can turn into a productive, worry about it, solid player? Right,
So how concern? You're not? None? Zero?
Speaker 5 (52:14):
But like the day I was there, I remember I
talked to a couple of coaches and they were talking
about how they had been winning fifty to fifty.
Speaker 2 (52:20):
Balls on offense.
Speaker 3 (52:21):
And it's fair that's.
Speaker 2 (52:23):
That's a concern.
Speaker 5 (52:24):
So yeah, there's concern, But for him, what's the lights
go on?
Speaker 2 (52:29):
Not worried about it at all.
Speaker 3 (52:30):
Well, maybe it's because the defensive backs are improved this year, Austin,
So you look at it from the defensive perspective.
Speaker 4 (52:37):
Yeah, I mean, listen, that could be the case, but
now the defensive backs, I think it's a giant question
Mark as well, because Tyson Campbell maybe out for a
little bit. We're not sure the extent of the injury,
because once again, we're in the preseason mode, right, so
let's keep things under wraps a little bit to the
regular season to find out what's going on there. And
I'm gonna be honest, you know, with that preseason game
against the Steelers, I came away thinking, Travis Hunter is
(53:00):
your best cornerback. He's your best cornerback that you have
right now. And I get it wasn't a flawless performance,
right He had that mistackle, maybe one of those you know,
welcome to the NFL rookie kind of plays.
Speaker 3 (53:11):
But but there's somebody who's behind him to clean it up.
It doesn't break the corner.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
Well, he was you know what I here right though,
But you know what I loved about it. He got
up and he was he banged his helmet, he was
mad at himself for missing that tack.
Speaker 5 (53:21):
Yeah, but but he is their best corner So go aheady, No,
I was.
Speaker 2 (53:27):
Gonna say, you're You're right.
Speaker 5 (53:28):
Campbell has had a great From everything I've heard, he
has been outstanding in training camp.
Speaker 2 (53:32):
They were raving about him. He wasn't very good the
other night though, Yeah, and he wasn't great that night.
Speaker 3 (53:38):
You know, it's been really good in camp though, too.
Is Jordan Lewis.
Speaker 4 (53:40):
He has been Yeah, And Jordan Lewis is kind of
but you know he's he's playing that spot, he's playing
that nickel, right, So and then you have Jerryon Jones
the other side, who was playing nickel last year and
now is I mean he's played cornerback before obviously, right,
but like he's he's asking to do something different this year. So,
I mean, if these are the conversations that we're having,
and we're not sure how long Tyson can AM's going
to be out for.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
Hopefully it's a couple of weeks, but we.
Speaker 4 (54:02):
Don't know right now, and he's had a history absolutely
of injuries. I mean, I understand that the m O
right now is to get Travis Hunter all the reps
on offense and then work him in in the defense.
But if I'm coach camp right now, I'm thinking, well,
you guys got Park of Washington over there. He looked
pretty good. He's having a great training camp. Can we
get Travis Hunter a little more on defense please? Because
(54:23):
he's the best one that we have right now at corner.
Speaker 5 (54:25):
See, I think Travis Hunter is going to play every
snap on corner. I think that's their plan, and no
matter what, that's their plan.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
I didn't believe that at first.
Speaker 5 (54:35):
I thought, but they were trying to get him up
to speed on offense because it's harder to learn how
to play the offense. And then he's going to be
the starting corner. I think their ideal scenario would be Campbell,
Hunter and Lewis as their starting corners, and then he'll
spot him in for forty snaps or whatever on offense
(54:55):
or thirty whatever it is on offense, because they're a
better offense when he's on offense too, And so that's ideally.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
But you're right, he's their best. He's he has the
chance to be an elite cover corner in the NFL.
Speaker 5 (55:08):
Ball skills are amazing, and so you need that more
than you need a wide receiver.
Speaker 2 (55:13):
You mentioned Parker Washington.
Speaker 5 (55:14):
So I think he plays every snap on defense and
forty snaps thirty to forty snaps on offense.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
That's what I think.
Speaker 3 (55:22):
Do you think that's adjusted over time? Peter has that
kind of been the plan for them all along, they
just kind of kept it under wraps.
Speaker 2 (55:28):
I think that was the plan all along.
Speaker 5 (55:29):
I think I think you play him on offense to
learn the offense and get comfortable with the offense because
it's harder to do. I mean, Austin is a defensive guy.
I didn't want to hear that, but that's the reality.
Speaker 3 (55:39):
Of it, right, Yeah, you're breaking any news man defense.
It's cool. It was like this, hey, But to.
Speaker 4 (55:48):
Be fair, though, I had a higher Wonderlic score than
We're all good. Yeah, higher than Tim Tebow. So to
take that for how you won, well.
Speaker 5 (55:58):
So did that stay over here in the corner that's
moving That had a higher score too.
Speaker 2 (56:05):
My trash can over here?
Speaker 4 (56:07):
And twenty two, Pete, you hit on twenty to Okay, okay,
I got you.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
I got what was t Bo's.
Speaker 3 (56:14):
I think you got a twenty one. I think you
had twenty one.
Speaker 2 (56:17):
But when you get like twenty for signing your name.
Speaker 4 (56:20):
Something like that school name, you know, that's a that's
a quick ten, you know what I'm saying, A quick
ten name and stuff.
Speaker 5 (56:26):
But but yeah, I think I think he's going to
be a cornerback and a good one.
Speaker 2 (56:33):
And I think if Campbell could play like he's played
in training.
Speaker 3 (56:37):
Can't be.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Let's take the contract out.
Speaker 5 (56:38):
Of the equation, okay, because that's they gave him way
too much money.
Speaker 2 (56:42):
Take the contract out of the equation.
Speaker 5 (56:45):
He could be a good corner, Lewis could be a
good nickel, and Hunter could be a great corner.
Speaker 2 (56:49):
So that's good. You're good there.
Speaker 5 (56:50):
But with now, if he's not there now, it becomes
an issue if he's not there for a while, because
who starts there Jerry and Jones.
Speaker 4 (56:58):
Yeah, no, with you, but to play, you know, like
the other side of this whole thing. Liam Cohen was
brought here for a reason, and it was to help
out Trevor Lawrence. So do you mean to tell me
that Liam Cohen is gonna be like, yeah, let's go
have our second pick overall, Let's go have him play
defense and let's go sprinkle on an offense every once
in a while.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
Or is Liam.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
Like all the plays all the players.
Speaker 5 (57:20):
It's I think that's crazy. If that sounds I think
he is. That's the they want to sure.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
I mean, you know, and going around the league and
talking to players.
Speaker 5 (57:28):
When I talked to him about it, they all say
it's not the endurance is unreal, they say, as the
endurance of a marathon runner.
Speaker 2 (57:35):
You know, Like I said, the day I was.
Speaker 5 (57:36):
There, it was one hundred and one and I actually
sat down and interviewed him and he wasn't even breathing hard.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
He had practiced on both sides.
Speaker 5 (57:44):
He had done you know, the stuff door and special
teams when he was usually standing around doing stuff on defense.
Speaker 2 (57:49):
And I go, hot enough for you, he goes at
one bad. I'm like, you kidding me.
Speaker 5 (57:53):
I love the heat, but it was hot that day,
so I think he can do it.
Speaker 2 (57:57):
But the question players asked me.
Speaker 5 (57:59):
And you know this and being a play well his
body hold up not from an endurance standpoint, but from
a physical standpoint.
Speaker 4 (58:07):
Yeah, I mean, listen, it's it's hard to fathom because
we always talk about that wall that you know that
the first year guys hit the rookie wall, because you
essentially go from playing the college game, then you play
in a senior Bowl or whatever. Then you prep yourself
with the combine, you prep yourself for your pro days.
You don't have a lot of time to just rest
and acclimate and get ready for the football season.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
It's just you go here.
Speaker 4 (58:27):
Then you go here, then you go here, so you
have zero time to rest and to expect a first
year guy, even you know, if he is the athletic
freak that Travis Hunter is, to come in here and go, okay,
you know you did you step in Colorado? You know,
you get rid for the PROTA and everything, you haven't
stopped training since, and now you go play both sides
of the football for the whole time.
Speaker 3 (58:46):
It's a lot on that. You know that that guy's play.
Speaker 4 (58:48):
And I think I would err on the side of
caution more than I would just say, well, okay, man,
let's throw it in the water and see what.
Speaker 3 (58:52):
You can do.
Speaker 5 (58:54):
You know, if somebody asked me the other day, they said,
what if he plays both sides of the ball for
the next three years or two years, and then he
get the year four and it's time to redo his contract?
Speaker 3 (59:07):
Be his agent?
Speaker 2 (59:09):
I mean, how do you negotiate that deal?
Speaker 5 (59:12):
You know what I said, I said, in year four,
he starts playing one side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
You know that. You know that's gonna happen.
Speaker 5 (59:20):
You know that happens right whatever year is negotiation deal
is he's going to play one side of the ball.
Speaker 2 (59:26):
He's not going to play both.
Speaker 3 (59:27):
Yeah, you limit the wear and tear. You pick one side,
You pick the one that pays one.
Speaker 5 (59:33):
If he's a great place, say he plays every snap
for two years or close to it, and he's an
All Pro corner in year two and he's a sixty
five catch, thousand yard eight touchdown receiver, negotiate that contract.
I mean, because if you're the agent, you're paying him
(59:55):
as a Pro Bowl corner of heighs as high as
you cossibly can.
Speaker 2 (59:57):
They're all Pro corner by the way.
Speaker 5 (01:00:00):
Let's sprinkle in that he's one of the better young
receivers in the league too, and negotiate that deal like
guy's gonna make a boatload of money.
Speaker 4 (01:00:09):
I mean, you're essentially paying for two players. Like if
I'm realistically, if if i'm his agent, and you know,
assuming that he has a you know, an all Pro
year at corner and he has a decent season at
wide receiver, I'm going, Okay, well, let's go and reset
the market at uh at cornerback. All right, we got
that done, and then let's go ahead and make top
you know, eight top five money at wide receiver. Cool
sounds gonna add those contracts together and we'll see you guys.
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
Listen. So you're almost in quarterback territory at that point, right, Oh, you.
Speaker 2 (01:00:34):
Would be would almost you would be? Yes, you and
Dan Court.
Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
Fifty five a year, I mean sixty whatever it is
at that point. Yeah, and then and then you know,
you know, I'm excited for two.
Speaker 4 (01:00:44):
I'm excited for the next crop of college kids that
are coming out now that are watching Travis Hunter do
his thing. Because you want to talk about the transport
portal and everything. How many college athletes are gonna go, Oh,
if I'm coming to Alabama, you only gotta be playing
wide receiver, not corner. Yeah, I'm gonna transfer to some
place house where they want me to play both spots.
Like that's going to be a trend now too. Just
wait and see.
Speaker 2 (01:01:03):
The only thing is it's so hard to do. And
again you go to you go to the endurance and
he did it at altitude. I mean, that's incredile, that's incredible.
You played in Denver. How it's hard to I lived
there for a year.
Speaker 5 (01:01:16):
I remember one time the first time I moved to Denver,
I was playing basketball and I started going, I'm like,
what is this And it's just and so for him
to be able to do that at altitude and now
to be able to do it and heat the way he's.
Speaker 2 (01:01:29):
Doing it, there's a special kid. But again, his body
isn't big.
Speaker 5 (01:01:32):
He's not a big kid, and so you worry about
body breaking down more than lungs breaking down.
Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
Pete, were you good at basketball?
Speaker 5 (01:01:41):
Yes, very good as members though that used to work
in the in the with the Jaguars, remember Lorenzo.
Speaker 3 (01:01:47):
Yeah, yeah, works in Miami. Now works for the Dolphins.
Speaker 2 (01:01:50):
Him and Ryan Robinson.
Speaker 5 (01:01:51):
Remember they had that basket inside the facility there and
they Zoe talked a good game, and I go go ahead,
we'll go shoot.
Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
I shot him. Both out shot shot their lights. Zoe
would do that. And by the way, you guys appreciate
this since you played with the Boston the other day.
Speaker 5 (01:02:08):
When I when I first went on my training camp
tour two weeks ago, was at the Dolphins. I was
had Tyreek hill on and I looked at him and
during the interview, I said, well, you look like.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
You leaned up a little bit.
Speaker 5 (01:02:17):
He goes, Oh yeah, man, he goes, he goes. When
I was here for you know, in Kansas City, I
was one eighty eight. When I came here, I started
feeling like Maurice Jones drew. Maurice is catching strays.
Speaker 3 (01:02:34):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (01:02:35):
And so then after I was done, I asked him,
I said, why did you think you shot at Maurice?
Speaker 2 (01:02:39):
He said, when he was a kid. I guess Tyree
grew up in Georgia, somewhere close. He was a Jaguars.
Speaker 5 (01:02:44):
He followed the Jaguars, and he remembered jumping Maurice Jones Drew.
Speaker 2 (01:02:49):
Running the football, and so that's why he took the shot.
Speaker 3 (01:02:52):
By the way, Maurice was here for the scrimmage last week,
was in town. I saw him in the hallway.
Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
I love Maurice's.
Speaker 5 (01:03:00):
Maurice is one of those guys that back in the day,
he always gave you. When I come into the locker room,
he'd always give me crap somehow. Oh, you play the game,
you know back when I go and I give him,
you know the line I give him.
Speaker 2 (01:03:11):
I'm not a five star chef, but I know it
tastes good to you know.
Speaker 3 (01:03:16):
All right, let's come back. We've got to keep it
real when we come because we've been faking it the
whole time. I guess. So the first hour. Uh no,
no sponsor.
Speaker 5 (01:03:26):
But we got all that wine from the other guy
a couple of years ago, so we got that calling
for him.
Speaker 3 (01:03:30):
Didn't Oh yeah, that's right. Yeah, Bobby didn't make it.
By the way, he's he's years ago. Apparently I didn't
realize the guy was dead. I was asking for wine.
He's been dead for years.
Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
Well, somebody's in family still owns it. So Bobby Junior.
Speaker 3 (01:03:47):
Mate Robert Jr. We're back in a moment. We've got
to keep it real when we come back. It's Jaguars
Happy Hour presented by mister Chubby's Wings. Welcome back. It
is Jaguars Happy our first Monday show of the season.
JP Shadwick, Pete Prisco, Austin Lane in with us for
(01:04:11):
the twenty twenty five campaign here on Mondays, recapping the
Jaguars lost to the Steelers in preseason Week one on
ten today XL, Jaguars dot Com and Jaguars YouTube. It
is time for keeping it Real, presented by Nobody. Jaguars
Defensive performance is what we're going with on Saturday night.
(01:04:33):
Steelers quarterbacks listen to these stats. Pete Austin, Mason Rudolph
nine of ten eighty four yards and a touchdown. Skyler
Thompson twenty of twenty eight two hundred and thirty three
yards and three passing touchdowns. How concerned are you with
the defense after that performance and moving forward, Austin Aaron Rodgers,
(01:04:56):
better watch out. Let's keep it real right now.
Speaker 4 (01:04:57):
No, I mean I'm a little concerned about it because
you know, you had your starters out there going against
a lot of the twos. Now granted, the Steels offensive
line played that opening drive and everything for I think
at least a quarter, but you're going against skill guys
who are backups, right, and that can't happen. So I
get it's one preseason game. We're still learning the defense
(01:05:19):
and everything. But like we talked about to open the
show today, we can't You can't have guys looking back confused,
not being lined up properly, because that's coaching, Like, that's
getting guys prepared to play the game. You know, skill
is gonna always win the day, and I get that,
but you have to set your guys up for success.
And I think there was a lot of guys that
were open, you know on Saturday that should have been
(01:05:40):
that wide open.
Speaker 5 (01:05:42):
You know, looking at watching the game and seeing Anthony
Campanelli's face, I thought somebody it looked like somebody told
him that Italian food stinks or something.
Speaker 3 (01:05:50):
You know, it's That's what.
Speaker 5 (01:05:52):
It looked like to me, because I've actually had a
conversation with Anthony about Italian food in Jacksonville. Because he's
gotta look look, go around some good ones. I can
tell you that.
Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
But it's there. You got to look for it. But
it was.
Speaker 5 (01:06:06):
It was not a good look, and it's supposed to
be a new look defense.
Speaker 2 (01:06:12):
They didn't show anything again, I have a heart. Let's
go back to the touchdown you just showed the Washington.
Speaker 3 (01:06:19):
Oh yeah, the big tight end from Jordan.
Speaker 2 (01:06:21):
That was they were in his own and it looks
like a Loulo con should.
Speaker 5 (01:06:26):
Get a little more depth there because there's nobody threatening
him underneath, right, that's what it should be. You look
at the end zone shot of that. There's no threat
for him underneath on that play.
Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
Because nobody's running around underneath.
Speaker 2 (01:06:41):
Correct, So there is there's nobody there.
Speaker 5 (01:06:43):
He's got to get more depth on that to make
that a tougher throw and allow Campbell to come over
and maybe make a play on it.
Speaker 2 (01:06:49):
So yeah, you see what I mean. That's not that's
not it. It's he doesn't get enough depth there. I
don't think he's kind of frozen for a second. There's
no I get it.
Speaker 5 (01:06:58):
If there's a threat there, he's got to play it.
But there was no threat there.
Speaker 4 (01:07:01):
Well, and it's wild too because I still haven't seen
the All twenty two yet. I still have to get
Pete's password for that one. But you know, when I
was looking back, like I couldn't tell if they're in
a cover three with the linebackers and a cover four
in the back end, Like it looked like they're in
a different zone coverages in terms of the safeties and
in terms.
Speaker 3 (01:07:18):
Of the linebackers, which could be the case some teams
do run that.
Speaker 2 (01:07:21):
Now that looks like three. That looks like it's covered three.
Speaker 5 (01:07:23):
That sample's playing play and he has no threat on him,
so he has to come over and make a play
on that.
Speaker 4 (01:07:29):
Well, yeah, but what the case may be, like you
know Hindsight's twenty twenty right, was it the right call
right there? Probably not? But once again, if that's gonna
be the case, you gotta get pressure, and I get
you're not gonna blitz a lot in terms of the preseason,
A lot of teams don't. It's more of just the
meat and potatoes. But this is where that interior pressure
it has to make a difference because the ball's coming
(01:07:49):
out quickly.
Speaker 5 (01:07:51):
And some of those touchdowns where against guys that aren't
going to be around, you know that, So you gotta
put you know, so you got to take those from
what they are. But again, it was sloppy. It wasn't
it wasn't crisp, it wasn't sloppy. I mean, Josh heinz
Allen and Dravon Walker didn't exactly win, you know. So
(01:08:12):
again it's the preseason. There's if you're Josh heinz Allen,
what's your motivation in the preseason?
Speaker 2 (01:08:18):
Seriously?
Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
Stay healthy?
Speaker 5 (01:08:19):
I mean, yeah, yeah, right, that's your only motivation, you
Travon Walker, your only motivation is to make it out
of the preseason, take a few hits, and get to
the preseason.
Speaker 2 (01:08:28):
Get yourself ready. So I don't read.
Speaker 5 (01:08:30):
A lot, and across the board, not just in Jacksonville,
but across the board, I don't read. I've been around
this thing for so long. I don't read anything into
the preseason.
Speaker 2 (01:08:39):
Now.
Speaker 5 (01:08:40):
So back in the day, if you played a half
with the starters versus starters, and you game like preseason,
game number three used to almost.
Speaker 2 (01:08:48):
Be like a game for a half.
Speaker 5 (01:08:50):
You game planned, you did some things, your starters played
against their starters, You came out of the halftime because
they wanted you to feel what it's like to come
out of halftime for And then now it's not close
to that. So you can't get any gage in this
at all.
Speaker 3 (01:09:05):
So then, Pete, what are we talking about here for
game two? In game three?
Speaker 4 (01:09:08):
I mean, are we satisfied with what we see in
a it's the preseason.
Speaker 3 (01:09:11):
It's just keep these guys healthy. We don't need to
see anymore or do you want to see?
Speaker 5 (01:09:15):
You got to play and not be sloppy. Now, whether
you dominate or whatever you do, that's a whole different issue.
Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
But you can't have guys.
Speaker 5 (01:09:24):
It's the same as it was a year ago. Remember JP,
all they did was look around. Yeah, I sted coverages
and look around and what are they doing?
Speaker 2 (01:09:32):
And so I think that has to be better. You
have to the mechanism of the game has to be better.
Speaker 5 (01:09:40):
The results take it for what it's worth, but the
mechanism of the game has to be better this time.
Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
And we'll see. You know how the schedule this week
affects that too. They're going to have a scrimmage, they're
saying on Thursday on the practice.
Speaker 2 (01:09:52):
When it's a scrimmage, nobody's tackling anybody. It's shrimmage.
Speaker 3 (01:09:55):
Okay, Well maybe they can know where they are in
the right place in a scrimmag.
Speaker 5 (01:10:01):
So what you're saying is if they have some kind
of scrimmage on Thursday, then there's an impact.
Speaker 2 (01:10:05):
Who plays on Sunday?
Speaker 3 (01:10:06):
Does it impact the reps? And I think that Liam
Cohen said that today. Hey, we're gonna wait until after
all this stuff happens to really determine that. After Thursday's practice, you.
Speaker 5 (01:10:15):
Know, more and more guys played in Week one than
have been played in this across the league. If you
notice that, Yeah, Kansas City always plays how long.
Speaker 3 (01:10:27):
Did How long did Mahomes play? How long did Mahomes?
Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
He played a couple series Cincinnati played.
Speaker 5 (01:10:33):
They started slowly every year every year they usually don't
play them, but they start slowly, So he played them.
I just think you guy's got to hit You know
that Austin guy's got to hit. If you go through,
if you don't play it all in the preseason, that
means the first time you actually tackle somebody is in
week one from the last time you played a game
(01:10:53):
that mattered.
Speaker 2 (01:10:54):
That's a long time not to hit somebody.
Speaker 3 (01:10:56):
Tackle somebody, No, without a doubt like that. It's just it.
Speaker 4 (01:11:00):
It's a different it's a different mindset when you're in
that game, right well, when you I think it's a
preseason game, right that the crowd's not at full effect
and everything. Maybe the energy from the opposition isn't it
to the full effect, but it's still different being.
Speaker 3 (01:11:12):
Under those bright lights. And you know, I.
Speaker 4 (01:11:15):
Would like to see these guys play a little more.
I really went and once again, we'll see how this
quote unquote scrimmage goes. I know they have the inner
squad whatever practice with the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 3 (01:11:24):
Yes, one day, which is one which is.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
Crazy that so it's only one day, by the way,
because I mean when I played, it was a full week.
Speaker 3 (01:11:31):
You know, I had to see these.
Speaker 4 (01:11:32):
Guys in Atlanta because there's always Atlanta Falcons, so it
was almost like a big time like you know, back.
Speaker 5 (01:11:37):
In Miami and Miami Austin went to Chicago to go
with the Bears.
Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
Listen to their schedule.
Speaker 5 (01:11:43):
They went to Chicago, worked out with the Bears on Tuesday,
worked out with them on Wednesday, and Thursday, stayed on
or wait was it?
Speaker 4 (01:11:50):
No?
Speaker 5 (01:11:51):
They went on Wednesday, worked out with them on Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
had day off, then played on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:11:56):
Now they go to Detroit. You're go to work out
with the Lions for.
Speaker 5 (01:11:59):
A day, stay there and play the preseason game on Saturday,
and then fly home and they're gonna work out with
the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (01:12:04):
So they call it the team bonding thing or whatever.
But still that's.
Speaker 4 (01:12:08):
There's like a team like tuggle war. There's gonna be
like charades. I'm sure they'll be.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
Playing kind of potato Potato sack race.
Speaker 5 (01:12:17):
Stunk a year ago, and your coach let the guys
get out of control.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
He has to try and rein him in. That's exactly
what that is.
Speaker 3 (01:12:23):
Can he do it down there? By the way, So
you can't. You can't.
Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
It's like if you I don't have kids, but I
understand if you have kids, once you if you try
and discipline them after they run wild for four years,
you can't do it.
Speaker 2 (01:12:33):
It's just not happening.
Speaker 4 (01:12:35):
Oh yeah, So I started think that one because I
have a ten year old. We start out one years old.
Oh he's crying, Hey, let's go ahead, and goes down
and you know, go in the corner. There's time out
a little bit one year old, not really obviously, so.
Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
I was choking. Man, service could be listening to this.
I'm just kidding. Put him in the corner at his
bast yea with a dunce cap on. Yeah great, and
you know you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:00):
Can't even remember it.
Speaker 4 (01:13:02):
But but I guarantee, like and I myself to blame
for this, that the first I've never I should say this.
I've done it one time where I've actually cussed in
front of my son and he was probably five or
six years old, and I dropped it. It was an
f bomb. It was a giant one. But I was
watching Blake Bortles throw his second pick six of the game,
and I just I let one, going, what what the
bleep are you doing? And then I had my wife
(01:13:25):
at the time go, what do you what do you
what are you saying? Like it's not my fault, it's
the second pick six, Like this is justified, Like anybody
would would say this and play Blake. Yeah, so as
soon as he's in school by Lake, first day of school,
fifth grade, as soon as that first you know that
curse word comes out, I'm blaming Blake bort I'm gonna
call it Blake Bortles and say you need to go
talk to this teacher man because I'm not taking you know,
(01:13:45):
the bullet for this one.
Speaker 3 (01:13:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
I just the thing about a cursing. You gotta be
careful around kids because they'll pick it up.
Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
And run with him sponges.
Speaker 2 (01:13:53):
Where did you hear that? My dad?
Speaker 3 (01:13:55):
My dad?
Speaker 2 (01:13:57):
But back to the jedguars, I think they need to
play too. I think this is a young team. They
need to play.
Speaker 5 (01:14:04):
You can't be worried about injuries. You just can't play
football that way. Well, I mean, don't you think they'll
play this week?
Speaker 3 (01:14:13):
I hope so. But they gotta play a little right.
Here's what I would say. And I'm not sure if
this works in locker rooms.
Speaker 4 (01:14:18):
And I feel like this was happening with the Bengals
because if any quarterback didn't have to play in the preseason,
I feel like it's Joe Burrow. But I feel like
Zach Taylor asked Joe Burrow, Hey, how are you feeling
you want to get some reps in I think Joe
Burrow said, yeah, you know, let's shake some of the
rust off, give me a couple of series here, and
let's go from there. I hope there's some consultation with
you know, some of the leaders of this team to
be like, how are you guys feeling where you guys at?
(01:14:40):
And I hope it's truthful and being hey, I think
we need a little more to kind of showcase what
we can do.
Speaker 5 (01:14:45):
Yeah, I think they need it, and I think they
should play and then you don't play them in the
final preseason game.
Speaker 3 (01:14:50):
Yeah, that's what I would do, easy enough.
Speaker 5 (01:14:52):
Then you play, then you play all you play the
guys that are going to be on stock market and
not working in wall streets.
Speaker 4 (01:14:58):
Well, especially with but because Mammy's coming to town too, right,
So you're gonna go to Miami, but you're gonna have
that one practice.
Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
There, right. So in theory, if if they weren't.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
Practice will be a lot you get more. Veterans get more.
Speaker 5 (01:15:12):
Out of those practices than they do at a preseason
game because they get more reps.
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
Like I've talked to many a quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:15:16):
I remember Philip Rivers telling me, look, I go work
out with the team I'm getting. You know all these
plays that I don't get preseason games is only played
like five or you know, ten plays or something at
the most, so it's much more valuable. So you're right,
I doubt they'll play week in the final week, so
you got to play them in this one.
Speaker 3 (01:15:33):
Pri Productions, the Southeast full service event company, has everything
you need to bring your next idea to life. Is
a pr Productions dot Com and learn more. That's it
for Keeping it Real, presented by Nobody. It's available Back
in a Moment, We've got fanatics, fan questions. It's Pete's
(01:15:54):
favorite segment. Love it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:57):
Are these gonna be fight related to because I'm not
paying anybody bet If they've lost a bet on me,
that's not my problem.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
That's a good idea. Actually, we might have to start
doing fight questions for Austin. If I lost you guys
any money, I apologize. Back in the moment, it is
Jaguars Happy Hour presented by mister Chubby's Wings. You know
it's it is intentional. When we have so many playmakers,
you want to get.
Speaker 9 (01:16:22):
Them all involved and early and let guys get the
rock and do something with us.
Speaker 3 (01:16:27):
So I think that is intentional for sure.
Speaker 9 (01:16:28):
And then there's times where the ball just kind of
finds finds guys more than others. I think in games
like this, obviously you want to see you want to
spread the ball around, You want to get guys touches,
get them going, you kind of see what see what
we can do.
Speaker 3 (01:16:41):
But I thought the guy's a nice job.
Speaker 9 (01:16:42):
Obviously we had the one drive, so it's hard to
really evaluate beyond that. But yeah, I thought the guys
did a goo job when their number was called.
Speaker 3 (01:16:49):
Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars quarterback, after the game in the locker room,
welcome back. It is Jaguars Happy Hour, our second Hour,
presented by mister Chubby's Wings. By the way, they brought
Chubby style wings, chicken palm sandwiches, and pretzel bites with cheese.
Speaker 2 (01:17:06):
Austin, you train all the time, so do you eat
anything like that ever?
Speaker 4 (01:17:10):
I mean, yeah, man, I can have a cheat me
every once in a while, you know, I can have
a little affair meal if I want to.
Speaker 3 (01:17:16):
I mean, I want to have some today.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
I think so delicious training.
Speaker 5 (01:17:19):
If you weren't training, would you be you would be
eating it though, No matter what, right.
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
I mean, Pete, The way I look at it is,
if I'm training hard enough, I can eat whatever I want, right,
So I'll just burn the calories in the gym.
Speaker 3 (01:17:30):
I feel the same way. There we go, man, That's
what I do. That's what you got to do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
You're trading the fight. You're trading the.
Speaker 3 (01:17:35):
Fight all No, No, I'm not fighting battle.
Speaker 2 (01:17:43):
Get a beaten.
Speaker 3 (01:17:43):
I'm battling myself, Pete.
Speaker 5 (01:17:45):
Okay, it's always a battle, Jap.
Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
It's always about it.
Speaker 4 (01:17:50):
I mean, am I allowed to have some of that?
I'm not like, Okay, well, I'm kind of like a prelancer.
I feel like I don't know if I'm allowed to
have that or not. The show about a collared shirt too,
the second collared shirt that I've worn in like the
past couple of days.
Speaker 3 (01:18:03):
You're already trying to cut players. You can go eat
whatever the hell you want.
Speaker 5 (01:18:08):
No, But I do like the fact that when JP
opens the show and he talks about Austin Lane being
here for twenty and twenty five, are you saying he
might not be back in twenty and twenty six and
then we're not.
Speaker 3 (01:18:18):
Even done VP Junior Man Pete by EVP Pete. We're
all day to day Tony, what's okay? Come on, Pete, we.
Speaker 2 (01:18:25):
Are but we're day to day in life till again day.
Speaker 5 (01:18:28):
But but but the way you say that, I'm like, Okay,
he's here for twenty twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
I was not involved in you even.
Speaker 2 (01:18:37):
Said you haven't even a half hour in and he's saying.
Speaker 4 (01:18:39):
Hey, man, it is Hey, maybe he's got some high
hopes for me.
Speaker 3 (01:18:43):
I'm not sure I have high hopes for you. I
have high hosts. I like it for here.
Speaker 4 (01:18:46):
Now I know the other people in town that man,
I like to hear that you say, you know that
the high hopes thing, because I have other engagements as well.
Speaker 3 (01:18:54):
Who I can't. I don't think we're Are you allowed
to say it or not? Your your brother John's Trent? Yeah,
rhymes of trouble with a different first letter. And I
don't mean Balky.
Speaker 2 (01:19:05):
Oh wait, who's who's Trent? Balky? We don't know him?
Speaker 3 (01:19:13):
Make it noted. The first person to say that name
on the show was Austin that it was going to
go there.
Speaker 4 (01:19:21):
I don't get an email, man, I don't know's you
can say.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
You can say whatever you want to say.
Speaker 5 (01:19:26):
I blistered him last year so bad, well, last year,
the year before the year before before that.
Speaker 2 (01:19:33):
So uh, look, you got questions, don't you.
Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
Oh yeah, let's get to him now, Pete you ready,
it's uh Fanatics fan questions and Jags fans gear up
at fanatics dot com with all the latest Jag styles.

officially licensed everything we put the cat signal out on X.
Here's the best we've come up with tonight at Samuel
(01:19:59):
du Well, Are you worried Hunter didn't look his dynamic
out there as he did in college? I worry his
athleticism won't translate to the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
Do you think it's all stupidity, stupidity stupidity?
Speaker 4 (01:20:10):
Yeah, I mean I think on offense, what people expected
him to be like the next Tyreek kill in preseason
game number one and break every single tackle like, yeah,
it's the NFL, right, You're gonna have to learn how
to navigate, how to wiggle and everything. But I thought
on defense he looked fine, and on offense he'll learn
as he goes.
Speaker 3 (01:20:23):
And Fred made a good point.
Speaker 5 (01:20:24):
Say this, that little short pass that he caught, if
he hadn't slipped, he was popping out the side to
get the big play down the sideline.
Speaker 2 (01:20:32):
So it's it's there.
Speaker 3 (01:20:33):
And that was my point quick Fred Taylor was with
Fred the other night and he said, you know what,
maybe that's a cleat issue. There was no He did
it a couple of times, actually fell out of his cleat,
so maybe that's an adjustment to be made moving ahead.
Most athletics played for him was the jump when he
hit the kicker after the field goal. It was like,
could have heard of that?
Speaker 2 (01:20:51):
Man, It's unbelievable.
Speaker 5 (01:20:52):
But if again, when you watch the twenty two, if
he pops out there, he's down the sideline for a
huge play, maybe even score.
Speaker 2 (01:20:59):
So it's it's it's common. It'll be fine. It'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (01:21:02):
Next question, at no a way, how much improvement can
we expect in terms of physicality of play. I saw
Steelers backups pushing our starters around Austin.
Speaker 4 (01:21:13):
I mean, I hope it improves yet, because I noticed
a little bit of the same thing, and it's kind
of deceiving in the box score a little bit because
if you see like what the Steelers are rushing with
their you know, their starting guys.
Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
It was few and far between.
Speaker 4 (01:21:24):
But yeah, I think in terms of mentality, once again,
I've said it, so the Coles come home, it starts
in the interior, and I think the interior's got to
step it up a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:21:31):
Yeah, but yeah, we.
Speaker 5 (01:21:33):
Talked about the interior of that defensive line. But Steelers
have had problems running the ball. You know that they
average four point their identity is to run the ball.
They average four point one per rush last year as
a team, and they're not a great physical run team anymore.
So I think it was You're right, it's a little misleading,
but they dominated the offensively.
Speaker 2 (01:21:50):
That's that's what you don't want to see.
Speaker 5 (01:21:51):
You want to see a defense dominate an offense, and
they didn't dominate.
Speaker 3 (01:21:54):
Them at all. Next question is about that defense at
coach Ripley one. For those who aren't jumping in the
Saint John's River, what are Austin's expectations with the defense
and the coverage being soft and or the lack of
pass rush. Did we blitz or stunt or just play bass?
Speaker 4 (01:22:10):
I mean, for the most part, you saw a lot
of just bass. Right, this is preseason game number one.
You're not gonna see a lot of blitzer. You're gonna
see the meat and potatoes. But I think going forward,
if what you have right now on that defensive line
is what you have, you know, unless Eric Armstead comes back,
unless Mason Smith comes back, you're gonna have to generate
a little more of that interior rush. So that's gonna
be involving blitzing. And keep in mind, like when we asked,
(01:22:30):
you know, Lloyd is a classic example of this. Like
Lloyd's great in the run game, Lloyd can get after
the passer a little bit as well. In terms of
his pass rush, I think you know, there's been times
in the past and if you ask him, well, you
know what he's has to work on. It's his coverage ability.
Well that's an example now of using a player to
his strength. So if you want to butlitz Lloyd every
once in a while or put somebody else, then more
(01:22:52):
power to you. But until they address that interior, you've
got to manufacture a pass rush somehow.
Speaker 5 (01:22:58):
Yeah, I think in talking to the guys and the
staff about Campanelli, he's going to be exotic and his
looks He's gonna show a lot of things. It's not
unlike Brian Flores in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:23:11):
He shows a lot of those different things.
Speaker 5 (01:23:13):
You saw basic as basic can be the other night.
So it's hard to read into that, at least from
my standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:23:19):
But you know, there's a lot of people scare them.
If they can't handle the basics, then how are they
gonna handle the exact.
Speaker 2 (01:23:26):
The basics are?
Speaker 5 (01:23:27):
The basics are just again, are you worried about Trayvon
Walker playing the run or rushing the passer? Or you're
worried about josh hin Allen rushing the pastor I don't
think you are, but they.
Speaker 2 (01:23:36):
Didn't do that in the game the other night. So
it's just so hard to preseason to evaluate.
Speaker 3 (01:23:42):
It really is a couple more here at Tartan Tiel.
Does Pete still think Fred Johnson makes the starting old
line ahead of Anton Harrison?
Speaker 5 (01:23:50):
You know when I said that I thought he would
push him, I was told that he would.
Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
Push him, and it hasn't materialized. I will say he
probably is.
Speaker 5 (01:23:58):
He played on the left side the other night, but
I think probably more apt to play on the right side.
From what I hear, he hasn't had a great camp,
and you know there's some concern about him.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
I think you look at their we talked. We haven't
talked much about the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (01:24:15):
Adoga has done a really good job at right guard,
and I think he might possibly win that job. He saw,
you know, when McCary got hurt. You saw crease there
and he.
Speaker 2 (01:24:27):
Took hold of it.
Speaker 5 (01:24:29):
Now, didn't they play him at right tackle today when
Harrison was out? Didn't Didn't they play because Milon played
right tackle just aft in this with the second group
the other night.
Speaker 3 (01:24:39):
Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I don't know about today because
I was I got out there late today.
Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
I think I read where McCary might have been over
there today.
Speaker 3 (01:24:48):
So they've been moving guys around though all camp.
Speaker 5 (01:24:50):
I mean, like Manheim played left guard and he's a center. Yeah,
and he was, by the way, he was good at
left guard. You know, we're not great, but good. I
think I think they finally have some developmental alignment. Milam
and Monheim both could be developmental alignment. Fortner was better
a little bit at center than he had been.
Speaker 2 (01:25:09):
But again, the.
Speaker 5 (01:25:10):
Offensive line, Fred Johnson, I'd have to say, in just
from my personal experience, what I thought he would do
come in is probably been a little disappointed.
Speaker 4 (01:25:20):
Yeah, And I think in terms of I mean, what
was the call he's gonna replace Walker Little or Anton Harrison.
Speaker 2 (01:25:28):
The thought was he might push forcible.
Speaker 4 (01:25:29):
Yeah, I mean, I think in terms of Anton Harrison,
it's been evident during camp that they're trying to push
him right in terms of just like what you know,
coach Liam Cohen saying in the media and everything like that,
they're really making a habit this year of trying to
get the best out of Anton Harrison because I think
we saw it his rookie year and he wasn't even
a hundred percent and he showed some glimpses of but
(01:25:50):
I think being a very good to even great offensive tackle.
Then last year, for whatever rhyme or reason, when I
feel like he was healthier, didn't pay up to his
best abilities. So I think you have a situation now
where it's like, is he not getting pushed enough, is
he not getting coach right? Whatever the case may be,
They're they're all in on this year on pushing them
to try to like make make it because basically got
to prove the coach is wrong and saying, hey, I
(01:26:10):
can handle this job, and I think for the most part,
if you watched that last game and tacha what Pete
was saying earlier in the show. I mean, there was
one play where if Travis CTN just reads it, it
would have been eighty eight and out the gate. It's
just he he didn't read the ball. And that was
that was spearheaded by Anton Harrison.
Speaker 5 (01:26:26):
Let me ask you this, guys, if Odogas starts at
right guard and McCary doesn't start, is that bad free
agency or do you give him the benefit of it
out because they got the other guy on a cheap deal.
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
How do you really how would that play out? How
do you look at it from that standpoint.
Speaker 3 (01:26:48):
That's a good question, It's a great question.
Speaker 4 (01:26:50):
I will look at it and say, you know, we
brought in a guy to to have a training camp
battle to maybe push McCary, and that guy ended up winning.
So I think, you know, if I'm the GM, it's
gonna be a win win.
Speaker 3 (01:27:03):
You're still you're still paying McCarry, right, is it McCarry
and McCary mcary He told me McCarry after his first
press conference.
Speaker 5 (01:27:11):
Okay, okay, because I've heard McCarthy at times in his career.
Speaker 2 (01:27:14):
It's been McCarthy.
Speaker 3 (01:27:15):
I've heard McCarthy.
Speaker 2 (01:27:17):
Yeah, but he's still there.
Speaker 3 (01:27:18):
It's a big contract. I was like twenty two and
a half million guaranteed thirty seven and a half three years.
Speaker 5 (01:27:24):
Okay, but but the other guy you signed to be
a tackle, a backup tackle, and.
Speaker 2 (01:27:30):
You move in the guard.
Speaker 5 (01:27:30):
He plays so well because he's played well supposedly in camp,
he's had a really good camp.
Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
Right, and he's on a two year, seven million dollar deal.
Speaker 5 (01:27:39):
Well he's cheaper, yeah, but again, so how would you
look at it? It just depends on how he plays.
If he played really well, then you look at it
as a good move. If he plays done play that well,
then you look at it as a two crappy moves.
Speaker 3 (01:27:51):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (01:27:52):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:27:52):
It's almost like when I was in Buffalo, Christian Benford
is their best corner, right. Christian Benford came in the
sixth and I remember the year I was there. Benford
was a sixth rounder and kyer Elam from Florida was
a first rounder and everybody was raising they said, no,
the sixth rounders out playing them already. Well, the sixth
(01:28:12):
rounders become one of the better corners in the league.
The first round is no longer a buffalo. So do
you ping him for drafting elam or do you give
him credit for drafting?
Speaker 2 (01:28:24):
And that's kind of the same scenario here. If it
played out that way, well, I.
Speaker 3 (01:28:27):
Mean, I found myself the same situation. It's a little different.
Speaker 4 (01:28:29):
But when I got here back in twenty ten, Derek
Harvey was the starting defensive end and obviously you remember
what they sacrificed to get Derek Harvey here. I mean,
it was a lot of draft capital to try to,
you know, make him the man. You know, he struggles,
and eventually I ended up taking his role, and I understood,
like there was a lot of hesitation to do that,
not because you know, it was a new GM and everything,
(01:28:50):
but it's like, it's what the move said, right, is
that you invested so much in this first round pick
and everything, all this capital, and now all of a sudden,
you're gonna be like, all right, let's bring this fifth
rounder for Murray State wherever that is, and then we'll
see what happens.
Speaker 3 (01:29:02):
And that's what happened, man.
Speaker 2 (01:29:04):
But I did take his job, as.
Speaker 4 (01:29:08):
That would have been the Dallas Cowboys game, and I
didn't know I was even.
Speaker 3 (01:29:11):
Playing in that so early in the season when was yeah,
it would.
Speaker 4 (01:29:14):
Have been like week five, I think four, week five,
and I didn't know I was even gonna play. So
I was inactive for the first whatever four games. And
I'm in Dallas, think I'm being active again. I'm in
the locker room, you know, we get off the bus
coach Tuck mel Tucker comes up to me. He's like,
you're starting today. I go huh, because I'm thinking, like,
you know, like, and I'll be honest, like, there's a
(01:29:35):
mindset that you get in before a game where you
think you're starting or you think you're inactive. Right, So
did I stay up and and watch a little too
much TV? I might have, right, because I think I'm
not gonna play it the next day. So I get
up and I go huh and he goes, yeah, you're starting.
I go okay, cool, and he goes, hey, I understand
you right, you're a little nervous. I go, well, yes, sir,
and he goes and at the paarapraise I can't cuss,
(01:29:57):
but I'm gonna paarapraise this.
Speaker 3 (01:29:58):
He goes, well, like what you do on film?
Speaker 4 (01:30:01):
He goes if you're gonna crap on yourself, just make
sure you do it one hundred miles per hour.
Speaker 3 (01:30:04):
I go, yes, sir, sounds good, and it ended up
being a great game.
Speaker 4 (01:30:08):
I got a tackle for loss of the first playoffs
out there, so I kind of etched myself in, But yeah,
it was.
Speaker 3 (01:30:13):
It was.
Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
There was a lot of resentment though, right because once
again Derek Harvey was supposed to be the guy and
he wasn't. And how they had that situation was just different.
But I will say this too, I found out I
was still rooking the NFL, because yes, I was started.
You thought life was good. I was still giving the
scout team looks too as well, because Derek Carvey didn't
want to do that. So I'd have to go with
the ones on defense in practice with Jack, and then
(01:30:36):
I had to go give the scout team look because well,
Derek Cary wasn't give the.
Speaker 3 (01:30:39):
Scout team one.
Speaker 2 (01:30:40):
And what ron did you come? You were a fifth
a fifth round pickah, So as.
Speaker 5 (01:30:43):
A fifth round pick, he ran down the first round pick,
the high first round pick five games.
Speaker 2 (01:30:48):
That's incredible.
Speaker 5 (01:30:49):
It no offense, Austin, but that speaks filures about Derek Garvey.
Speaker 4 (01:30:53):
No, no, listen, Derek Carry was a great guy man
and he was always cool with me when he have
to be right because he got a guy from Murray
Stay coming and taking your job, he'd have to be cool,
but he was always cool with me.
Speaker 3 (01:31:03):
All right, We've got one more question for the Night
at the foot fault guy, please tell me Prisco will
be on means the show. I need him to keep
calling Tony Bisselli a turncoat.
Speaker 5 (01:31:15):
Well, look, you give Tony Bisselli a ton of credit
because he turn.
Speaker 2 (01:31:20):
Coated himself into an executive shop. What is this Tony's
exact title, by.
Speaker 3 (01:31:27):
The way, executive vice president of Football Operation.
Speaker 2 (01:31:30):
Okay, at the end of last year for the last month.
Speaker 5 (01:31:33):
And a half when he was defending everything and I
called him the turncoat and all that, he.
Speaker 2 (01:31:38):
Played it right the right way. Kudos to him. We
were the.
Speaker 3 (01:31:40):
Dope right because we're still on the show. I mean
no offense to the show.
Speaker 2 (01:31:45):
It's just but look at him.
Speaker 5 (01:31:47):
He played himself in the executive DP of the football
operations for NFL team from that seat right there, Austin,
think about that.
Speaker 3 (01:31:56):
It's incredible big shoes to fill, for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:31:58):
You know what it is.
Speaker 3 (01:31:59):
How many years did we do the show eleven? I
believe I think eleven seasons total.
Speaker 2 (01:32:04):
So I taught him well, I sent him on his way.
He could be the executive VP now.
Speaker 5 (01:32:10):
He learned enough football from me that he could go
on his way. You know, it's funny though he's still
butchers names.
Speaker 3 (01:32:16):
Oh, I bet there's no doubt about that. In meetings.
I bet he's hammered.
Speaker 5 (01:32:20):
Like I'll talk to about guys around the league sometimes
and he'll still butcher their names.
Speaker 3 (01:32:24):
Hey, you should have heard him do a commercial the
other day. He actually did a commercial the other day.
Not sports Coach, No, it's not sports coats back, but
it was. It took him a handful of takes which
that happened.
Speaker 2 (01:32:35):
It's not surprising. That's not surprising.
Speaker 3 (01:32:37):
They have it. Fanatics, fan questions are in. We're back
in a moment with some final thoughts on our opening
Monday night show of the season. This is Jaguar's Happy
Hour presented by Mister Chubby's Wings. Welcome back. It is
(01:33:00):
Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Mister Chubby's Wings, our first
Monday show of the season. Winding down from the Hundai
Studios of the Miller Electric Center, JP Shadwick with Austin
Lane here in Jacksonville, Pete Prisco down in South Florida
and for a dream. For twelve years, the dream Fighters
Homes has been proud to call themselves the official homebuilder
(01:33:21):
of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Visit dreamfinders Homes dot com for
all the available inventory and go Jags. Pete. I just
spent the entire commercial break crushing Basselle on how he
couldn't read commercials properly, and I just screwed up the
first read of this segment.
Speaker 2 (01:33:36):
You know what, He'll give it to you when he
sees you. Yeah, because he probably he's probably we know
you're in your office listening Tony. We know it.
Speaker 3 (01:33:43):
We just know it old Rabbit Ears, Tony.
Speaker 5 (01:33:46):
Sitting there in your your hoodie.
Speaker 3 (01:33:51):
Eating snacks, eating snacks, watching tape.
Speaker 2 (01:33:54):
Yeah, I mean we know it.
Speaker 3 (01:33:56):
You know he's listening, well, Rabbit turncoat to Rabbit Ears.
Speaker 2 (01:34:02):
You know what, though, I don't think I don't.
Speaker 5 (01:34:05):
Think he's going to be like certain other gms in
that GM in that building at all.
Speaker 2 (01:34:10):
You know, I don't think James will be either.
Speaker 5 (01:34:12):
Look, the other guy was so thin skinned Trent Balkey
listened to everything and it bothered him.
Speaker 2 (01:34:19):
And when you try and talk to him about it,
it still bothered him.
Speaker 5 (01:34:22):
So you know, look, we're going to be critical. We're
not holding back. We will not hold back. If Warren's
being criticized, you get criticized, but Warren's being praised, you
get praised.
Speaker 2 (01:34:32):
Period. That's the way it's going to be.
Speaker 5 (01:34:34):
I'm curious because I think late Liam Cohen, I don't
know if you guys.
Speaker 2 (01:34:37):
I feel like he's handled his team very well in
the offseason.
Speaker 5 (01:34:41):
And it's just a matter of what's it going to
be like in the regular If it's one and two,
how does he handle that?
Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
We don't know that. That's what we don't.
Speaker 3 (01:34:50):
And that's with every new head coach that comes in,
especially a first year head coach that comes in. We've
had a few of those when they're one and four.
Oh boy, things can get tight in a hurry.
Speaker 2 (01:35:02):
Us.
Speaker 4 (01:35:02):
No, without a doubt. I mean, when you're winning football games,
everything's fun. Right Like if you're on a little bit
of a winning streak, your job is easy. Just all right,
be here at a certain time. I'll coach. That's I'll
call these plays cool. But if it's the NFL, so
there's gonna be losing streaks, right, So if we're talking
three four games in a row, how do you respond?
And that to me is gonna be the true makeup
of a coach right there, especially a first year coach,
(01:35:22):
of how do you rally your troops? Then how do
you get your guys to be invested when you guys,
you know, worked hard in the off season and everything,
and now all of a sudden it's not going like
you wanted.
Speaker 3 (01:35:32):
What is the plan going forward?
Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
You know?
Speaker 5 (01:35:34):
I was talking about Lafleur last week about coaching, and
we were talking about he said early in his career
it would drive him crazy to the point where he
didn't sleep, and what would you do when it wasn't perfect?
And I told him, I go, can't be perfect. You
can't control it. It cannot be perfect.
Speaker 2 (01:35:54):
And until you.
Speaker 5 (01:35:55):
Later on in his career, as he started to realize
it can't be perfect, that it changed who he is.
And so that's what you always worry about with young
young coaches who were coordinators, like with Liam, if it
goes bad, does he go back to trying to fix
the offense?
Speaker 2 (01:36:09):
It's not just him Ben Johnson. Uh, those guys, do
you go to your side.
Speaker 5 (01:36:14):
Of the ball and say, I gotta oh my gosh,
I gotta fix this, and not really big picture of
the whole team, because that's where you're gonna be decided
if you're a great coach or not.
Speaker 2 (01:36:23):
Is that you handled a big team, the whole team. Well.
Speaker 4 (01:36:25):
And here's the biggest thing too about Liam Conan this
entire regime taking over, is that they've put u you know,
a really emphasis on transparency.
Speaker 3 (01:36:35):
Right.
Speaker 4 (01:36:35):
We almost feel like we're behind the curtain the entire
time with this new regime. What happens if you lose
three or four games in a row? Is there gonna
be accountability? Are you gonna call guys out or are
we gonna be privileged to know, Hey, what do you
guys plan on doing it? Or are we gonna kind
of go quiet then and not really give us a
lot of information? You know, is gonna be more like
Brett Martineau. You would understand from Doug Peterson last year?
Speaker 3 (01:36:56):
Remember that one I do remember what you get it?
You would can get it?
Speaker 4 (01:37:00):
Yeah, I mean we can got Liam Cohen breaking down
and play by play in the preseason like, I'm a
fan of it, but me to.
Speaker 3 (01:37:08):
In the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:37:09):
I've said that all the year. There's no secrets in
the NFL.
Speaker 3 (01:37:12):
Hey, Pete, when do you want to cut the team?
And when do you want to pick the schedule? We
got like three weeks cut the team.
Speaker 2 (01:37:17):
We'll cut the team? What days cut dates? And three
weeks from.
Speaker 3 (01:37:20):
