Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Jacksonville Jaguars to lect Shravis Hunter.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
And we're doing it because you're the one we've been
hunting up.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
Have the best.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Decision, can't.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
I know who.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
I've already worked for it and I just have began
a tourist where it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
I can't wait the start of a great weekend.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
This is just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin, America's dairy land,
and boy, what a weekend it was productive for the
Jacksonville Jaguars in the twenty twenty five NFL Draft. Out
of this room, the draft room at the middle of
Electric Center empty at the moment. They've got all the
draft picks. They've signed undrafted rookies as well. And welcome
(00:59):
into our twenty twenty five NFL Draft recap presented by
Dream Finders' Homes. And the Jaguars entered the draft, of course,
with ten picks. After a few deals, they come away
with nine drafted players and an impact on this roster
moving forward, a youth movement of sorts. Jap Shadwick, Brian Sexton,
and John Oser. And yeah, it's a massive score at
(01:20):
the top of the draft. We'll get to that coming up.
And all the picks, but a lot of intensibly rich
rookies coming to town bru.
Speaker 6 (01:26):
Well, And that was the theme, right.
Speaker 7 (01:28):
They set it earlier in the week before the draft began,
and they set it throughout the course of the draft.
They drafted team captains, They drafted guys who helped their
neighbors with their taxes. They drafted a guy who is
committed to his country from the naval academy. I mean,
it's just on and on and on. They were looking
for guys John who would come in here be great players. Look,
I mean, you can't bring him in here if they're
(01:49):
not going to contribute and be good football players. Some
of them great football players, but guys who come in
here and bring a certain level of the floors.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
They like to say of character.
Speaker 8 (02:00):
Yeah, when you're setting the tone and reshaping the organization,
you have to eventually reshape the organization and set a tone.
They also wanted versatility, clearly that was a theme. They
also wanted to get faster. Those are some of the
things they wanted on the field that you'd be able
to see.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
But in the locker room, you're darn right.
Speaker 8 (02:19):
They wanted guys who were bought in and they Football
also wanted guys who loved ball and had played a
lot of ball. They mentioned that in the press are afterward,
that yes, it mattered if you had played a lot
of snaps, and James Gladstone particularly talked about guys who
came in sort of ready, So I think that was
(02:41):
the theme.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
They expect these guys to be able to play right away.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Let's hear from James Gladstone nine picks in his first
NFL draft as a GM.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
He's with Kay Stevens.
Speaker 9 (02:49):
James Gladstone, your first full draft class as a GM,
how did things go for you? How are you evaluating
the players you're able to get?
Speaker 10 (02:56):
You know what, So far, so good. It's been an
exciting days here and now we got our coaching staff
and scouting staff working together through the undrafted college free
agency process. But you know, everything that we were hunting
up in each of these players is you know exactly
what we had preached coming in, and that's prioritizing people
who are intangibly rich, and every one of them embodies at.
Speaker 9 (03:18):
I was talking to Liam obviously adding Travis Hunter kind
of a big bang off the top, but something you
guys have been working on for a little while before
it actually came to fruition on the first day. Was
that a thing that you really want to focus on
making a statement right out of the gate with your
first pick.
Speaker 10 (03:33):
Yeah, you know, I think making it known how we
intend to move, how we intend to operate, was a
piece to that puzzle. But at the same time, we
want Travis to be nothing more than who he is
naturally knowing that, you know, that's going to elevate the
space around him, just like it has that everywhere he's
been to date.
Speaker 9 (03:50):
On offense, you focused on a couple different positions, offensive line, depth,
running back. What were some of the things you were
looking at. I talked to Liam about this, but what
were some of the attributes that you on those players
that you wanted to focus on.
Speaker 10 (04:02):
You know what, that's a great question because I think
so often you got to let the board fall to you,
and obviously sometimes you're going to have to adjust and
remain agile. But the things that we keep sort of
top of mind are the items that we've sort of
preached to date, and that's the intangible pieces, and you know,
with each other one of these guys, it was the
(04:24):
physical and mental toughness, that really jumped out more than anything,
and it's always something of interest for us to address
the front in particularly that of the offensive line, and
being able to land two guys who fit just that
is really exciting.
Speaker 9 (04:38):
We talked a lot about creating competition. We saw a
lot of defensive editions, some of which may play different
positions than they played in college. Is that versatility important
to you and kind of having different kinds of people
in different rooms.
Speaker 10 (04:50):
Yeah, the multiplicity, the versatility, It certainly was in the
mix at each of these decisions that we made, and
you know, I look forward to seeing it come to
life and their usage being something that we can spread
across multiple spots, knowing that you can change the mass,
so to speak. When that's the.
Speaker 9 (05:06):
Case, As you kind of take some time away from
this now and look back, do you feel as though
you have the players in place that you want? Are
there's still some points on this roster that you feel
you need to address before training camp starts.
Speaker 10 (05:17):
I think it's fair to say that the work's never done.
So look forward to rounding everything out here today with
the undrafted college free agent process and you know, turning
the page tomorrow to seeing what spots still remain and
how we can move forward.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Very good, Thank you, thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
All right, next.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
One, that's James Gladstone with Kyle Stevens. We will touch
on all nine of the draft picks. Let's get to
him starting right now. And it started with a bang
on Thursday night.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Go ahead and take a moment to soak this one in.
We're trading up in the draft.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
We're moving from.
Speaker 10 (05:48):
Pick five to pick two, and we're doing.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
It because you're the one we've been hunting up.
Speaker 10 (05:53):
Yeah, that's the best decision.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
The Jaguars shocked the NFL and Travis Hunter is headed
to Jacksonville. You know, they said the reports were that
the basic parameters were in place about seventeen days before
the draft, and it finally came through. It's bold, it's
a little risky, more than a little risky, but it
all also could be a game changer in the National
Football League. He's the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Blittnikoff Award winner,
(06:21):
Benerica Award winner, ball skills, elite route running, competitive nature.
The list goes on and on and on, but he's
looking to become the first regular two way player in
the NFL since the nineteen sixties. Confidence has never lacked
for Travis Hunter.
Speaker 11 (06:37):
I kind of developed my confidence at a young age.
I started playing football when I was four. I have
older cousins, so they used to bully me, and I
was the youngest out there playing football with him, so
I had to get that confidence. I'm not gonna let
y'all bully me and push me around. So that's just
how I go about. If I'm not gonna let anybody
push me around tell me what I can't do, I'm
just go out and show him.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
He started as a blue chip kid and then was
a blue chip prospect five stars, could go anywhere, and
college football he wanted to. Ended up at Jackson State,
then Colorado, blue chip player there, Heisman Trophy, and now
the number two overall pick.
Speaker 7 (07:08):
Brian don't know that I've ever seen anyone like him.
And you mentioned all the awards. Would you walk away
with six trophies last year? I think he's the most
decorated college football player in the history of the game,
obviously for great reason. Fifteen touchdowns last year as a receiver,
what four or five interceptions as a defensive back. It'll
be interesting to see how they decide to use him.
I can only tell you what he told me on
(07:29):
Wednesday after the Play sixty event in Green Bay.
Speaker 6 (07:33):
I'm playing both. And then he came into.
Speaker 7 (07:36):
The area where we were in lambeau Field and said,
I told you I'm playing both.
Speaker 6 (07:42):
So he believes he's playing both well.
Speaker 8 (07:44):
And if you trade up in the first round to
number two, you can expecre somebody who's had a quarterback. Yeah,
he's gonna play both, and he's gonna be expected to
play at a high level. They've talked about.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Him changing the sport.
Speaker 8 (07:57):
This is one I would say Trevor, law Tony Vasally,
and Travis Hunter are the three most important draft picks
in franchise history.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
This is up there with Trevor. Let's hear from Liam Cohen.
Speaker 5 (08:08):
Yeah, he's the one that's going to figure out how
to use this guy on both sides.
Speaker 12 (08:13):
The offensive mind and you starts to get extremely excited, right,
and then you have to switch back to being Hey,
I'm a head football coach, and we know that he's
going to be able to do both. We feel that
in our bones we're going to set that up that way.
From a schedule, from an operations standpoint, the way that
we're going to operate for him to set him up
(08:33):
to have the most success that he can that, in fact,
then help the Jacksonville Jaguars become the best version of ourselves.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
That's the head coach portion of it. Of course. James Gladstone,
he made that move to move up and get him.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
A number two overall, he certainly has high expectations for Hunter.
Speaker 10 (08:50):
There are players who have the capacity to alter the
trajectory of a team.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
There are very few.
Speaker 10 (08:55):
Players who have the capacity to alter the trajectory of
the itself. Travis Well, he has a lot to still
earn in our eyes, has the potential to do just that.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
John, we don't hear altering the sport a lot when
we're talking about football prospects.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, I mean it's.
Speaker 8 (09:17):
It's as much expectation, frankly, as I've ever heard on
a player, you know. So the expectation is that he's
a perennial All Pro in Hall of Famer.
Speaker 7 (09:29):
This is my thirty first NFL draft to never have
we seen one player as the best receiver, best corner,
and overall best player. I mean, it's the triple crown
and this is a guy that if you're going to
take your swing, and you mentioned there's a little bit
of risk there when you're trading away next year's number one,
when you're taking a guy who says, you know offense
(09:51):
and defense and you're not exactly sure how it's gonna work.
They took their swing, JP, and I mean, as of
this moment, I can't see how you can't just be
excited about the fact that this is a very talent
with a guy who's coming into your organization. John, You're
right in terms of the best players that this team
is drafted in terms of.
Speaker 6 (10:11):
I mean, with all due respect to Fred Taylor, who
we all know and love, this is right there.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
It's big. There are big storylines on this team in
this offseason.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Of course, how Trevor Lawrence adapts to the new offense,
how Brian Thomas Junior goes into the year two, what's
the defense gonna look like? But there is no bigger
storyline now than what Travis Hunter is doing on a
day to day basis.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Quarterback still the big one.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
It's still big, but boy, Travis Hunter is right there,
close by John for sure. Let's move along to Day
two of the draft. The Jaguars had a little bit
of a slow start. They gave up that second round
pick to go up and get Hunter, so it was
a fast finish show with a pair of trades and
a pair of picks. In the third round, Caleb brandsaw
out of Chulane at number eighty eight overall. He will
play safety for the Jaguars, and after the selection he
(10:56):
explained why tackling is not an issue.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
For him play.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
So, you know, I've just always grown up. I don't
know how to wrap up and just make tapping. And
I've never been scared. You know, I got older brothers,
so you know, I was always a little and Ivy
try to be my brothers. You know, that's just something
that I've done, you know, just growing up, just just
going and tackling and tackling dummies in practice, just those
type of things. It just translated into the game.
Speaker 5 (11:20):
The Jaguars then traded up to the number eighty nine pick.
While that previous pick was going on, they grabbed West
Virginia guard Wyatt Milam and he told Kay Stevens he
has one primary job.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
I'm gonna let no one touch you.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
I'm promising that. So I felt like I did a
good job at West Virginia not let no one touch
the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
So that's my goal. I'm not gonna let anyone touch Trevor,
so I'm excited to that.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Let's stick with mylam here, guys, reigning Big Twelve Offensive
Lineman of the Year. It was a focus and free
agency to bring some new faces in and Brian continues undrafted.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Well.
Speaker 7 (11:54):
We talked about the awards that the Travis Hunter got.
If you just look at this guy week to week
as he was your value, people thought he was one
of the best offensive linemen in the entire Big Twelve Conference.
He's going to move inside to guard. He's a big
guy with a nasty finish in the run game. Good
They need that, John. I mean, this is a team
that has been unsuccessful on third down and short yardage
(12:16):
for the last two years, and that's put all the
pressure on the quarterback and all the advantage to the defense.
You hate to say that a rookie is going to
come in and be a game changer, but if he's
as good player as we think he is, he could
change the game too.
Speaker 8 (12:27):
This is about getting nasty and it's about being better
on the interior of the offensive line, which has been
a topic for anybody who's watched this team.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
So we'll say how it goes, but that's the idea.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
And then on Ransaw quickly safety.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Now, he was playing a lot of nickel in college
at Troy and then down at Tulane for his final
year of college football.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Special teams would be big for him too.
Speaker 7 (12:48):
Probably heard James Gladstone say small school guys going to
bigger schools and continuing the production. Well that's exactly what
he did going from Troy to Tulane. And every time
you see him on tape, his production just pops off
at you. It's exciting to think about how this secondary
can get better. Hunter in some role Renshaw, and they
(13:09):
added another defensive back later in the day.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
I don't out of the guys past Hunter, I don't
know how quickly everybody starts or starts mattering.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
I expect I ran So to start manning very quickly.
Speaker 8 (13:21):
Out of all the guys after Hunter, this is the
guy that you hear people saying, watch this guy, he's
a stud.
Speaker 5 (13:27):
Let's go to day three now and round number four.
The Jaguars had two early picks. They started with a
selection of running back bass Shoal Tootin from Virginia Tech
at one oh four overall and speed to burn for
the running back.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
Yeah, that's all good attributes that I have in my game.
Like you said, the speed, able to make guys miss,
stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
It's just so why I'm on the football field. And
you know that's the kind of swager I play with.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Yeah, that's a good swagger to have.
Speaker 5 (13:53):
And then Jack Kaiser has a different kind of veteran swagger.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Six years at Notre Dame. Of course, the team captain
the end.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
The team last year went to the National Championship game
and lost. But Kaiser, in an era of transfers and
nil money, he started the old fashioned way and stuck
it out.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
And sup Ben, I was, you know, hoping to get
the cost of attendance check for five hundred bucks at
the end of the semester and that was a.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Big deal of me. Yeah, I knew.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
I was at their name for four years and that
was you know, there was nothing else to it. And
so I think there's still that mindset to where, like,
you know, I'm still trying to fight for everything I
you know, I have. I understand you have to hearn
it first before you didn't give it.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
So let's start with Kaiser here.
Speaker 5 (14:36):
He's twenty five already, he's been around the block a
few times, John, And if you've been around campus for
six years, you've been to be a team captain at
the end.
Speaker 8 (14:43):
Well, that's a good point if he sort of defines
what we talked about earlier, a guy who should be
ready to come in and play right away at twenty five.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
He talked about he already knows his routine. He knows
how to get ready for a game.
Speaker 8 (15:00):
At twenty five in the NFL, you better be ready
to go because at thirty, yeah, it's tough. So I
expect him to do what he is going to do
very quickly.
Speaker 7 (15:10):
If you watched Notre Dame last year, especially during their
playoff run, you saw a very talented defense and he
was making play after play after play.
Speaker 6 (15:17):
What I love the most.
Speaker 7 (15:18):
About him was he was sitting outside on his family
farm in Indiana, being a Midwesterner. That hits right here,
you two having worked in Indiana, and he said that
as soon as he got his chores done, he sat
down right because he's on a family farm and that's
what they do that's why one of those super intangibly
rich guys who comes in here as a good player
and a guy that they expect to have a real
(15:39):
strong impact in the locker room.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
And quickly back to Toot and the running back runs
in the four threes and was at North Carolina A
and T transferred to Virginia Tech.
Speaker 8 (15:47):
John Yeah Cohen talked in the presser about improving.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Their quick strike ability. That's a theme. He defines that theme.
Speaker 7 (15:56):
Score from anywhere on the field, was said more than
once in the post draft Prescott Prince, this feels like
his Bucky Irving, who was also a fourth round pick
and a guy with speed.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
So the Jaguars continued on Saturday with no picks in
round five, but they finished out the draft with four
players over the final two rounds, including in the sixth round,
one hundred and ninety fourth overall Auburn linebacker Jalen McLoud.
He started at a state, transferred down to the Planes
twenty four tackles for the loss in twenty four games.
(16:25):
He was a hybrid linebacker, would play standing up in
early towns and then put his hand in the ground
and pass rushing downs.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
With that, the senior Bowl in Bobile.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Later in the sixth round, two hundred overall, Raywan Lane
the third, a safety out of Navy, jumped into the
starting lineup in Annapolis as a freshman and stayed there
the rest of his time. He had offers to leave
after his first two years to go to some other
FBS schools, but decided to stay at the Naval Academy,
and then in the seventh round, two twenty one overall,
senator Jonah Mannheim from southern California started at both tackle
(16:57):
positions in twenty two and twenty three, but then he
moved to center last season for the Trojans, where he
stood out and finally at two thirty six overall, Syracuse
running back Laquin Allen, a two year starter for the Orange,
one of two FBS players last year with over one
thousand rushing yards and five hundred plus receiving yards Scataboo
the other from Arizona State. The Allen family, of course,
(17:21):
all fired up on the phone call. It's moments like
these that make the draft incredible. Television and social media guys,
I mean, these last couple of round guys are gonna
really have to fight and earn their way on but
(17:43):
it's the moment of a lifetime for them and their family.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
The NFL draft ratings will challenge some of the NBA
playoff games this weekend, and it isn't because men in
suits are walking across the stage. It's because they do
a great job of sharing the humanity of people getting
an opportunity.
Speaker 6 (17:59):
It was awesome watch this weekend.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Yeah, reality TV is often fake TV. That's reality TV.
It's great.
Speaker 5 (18:05):
It's as real as it gets. It's a lot of
youth for a new head coach Liam Cohen. Nine draft picks,
over twenty undrafted free agents or thereabouts, So a lot
of youth for Liam Cohen.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Who's with kuy Stevens.
Speaker 9 (18:17):
You're with the Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen, your first
draft under your belt. Long three days, but they're fun
three days. So how did the whole process go for you?
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (18:25):
I thought it was a great process. James and his
staff did a phenomenal job. The collaboration between the coaching staff,
the personnel staff throughout this whole process I thought was
really clean. Right, You're never going to always completely agree
on every single player, but I think we did a
nice job of Hey, when we couldn't quite get to
that point with each other. We just moved on to
the next player and kind of kept them moving. But
(18:46):
I thought the process was really clean and was really proud.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
Of the guys.
Speaker 9 (18:49):
Obviously a huge splash off the get with Travis Hunter.
You must be so excited and just thinking about those
possibilities and how you're going to use him. Pretty much
dream come true for your first player drafting.
Speaker 12 (19:00):
Yeah, that was the whole point, right, was to try
to get a player that can come in and impact
our organization, our team, and hopefully our city, and also
along the way be the person that he is, the
guy that just absolutely loves football, has a great smile,
walks around this place, you know, like a dream just
came true for him. And that's really what this is
(19:20):
all about. Yes, this is about winning, it's about us,
but it's really about these guys in the moment that
they had this weekend.
Speaker 9 (19:26):
On the offensive side of the ball, A couple running backs,
a couple of linemen. What were you looking for specifically
in those two positions that you wanted to add to
this team.
Speaker 12 (19:34):
Yeah, ultimately continuing in to add depth at the offensive
line position, right, depth and competition you can never have
enough of those guys, especially with how volatile the position
can be at times, you can never have enough good
depth there and as well at the running back position, right,
those are two positions that you can get thin really
quick and you're always looking to add depth and competition
(19:54):
at you know, last year it kind of dealt with
it with the Tampa Bay Bucks. You know, Sean Tucker
comes in as a great game for us against the Saints.
He was our number three running back. So when you
can have depth there and competition, it always is a
huge plus.
Speaker 9 (20:09):
On defense, some defensive backs, added linebackers, a little edge rush,
kind of some different options for you. What were you
and coach Camp kind of focusing.
Speaker 12 (20:18):
On, Yeah, I think you know, when we first got
here early on, the focus was, hey, how do we
continue to get players in the back end that are
going to be able to hopefully get their hands on
the ball right and add the ability to either tackle,
defend the ball, coverage skills whatever it is in that secondary.
And then also at that linebacker position, we were able
to add a couple of players there that have some diversity, right,
(20:41):
They're able to play on the edge on the ball,
off the ball and then also contribute on special teams.
So those were a couple of the positions that we
were really loading up on.
Speaker 9 (20:50):
Awesome congratulations, Thank you so much.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
That's Liam Cohen of course, Jaguar's head coach, and thanks
to Kay Stevens throughout the weekend.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
Here some final thoughts here, guys, we hear.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
A lot of these buzz words after the hiring of
both the head coach and the GM. I think John
this weekend we started to really see that come to
fruition with some of the traits that we see out
of these prospects.
Speaker 1 (21:11):
The next step is seeing it on the grass outside.
Speaker 8 (21:14):
Bold I mean they said at the very top they
wanted to be bold at the top the first round really,
so we're talking about everything else, the first round is
going to define this draft for a lot of people.
It was a bold move that I think set the
tone for what they want to be. It was a statement.
Pick Glaston was talking about it what at the draft luncheon.
So they did that and then I think overall they
(21:36):
showed the versatility and they gave us a glimpse, Brian
into how they're going to move forward with this.
Speaker 2 (21:43):
With intangibly Rich yeah, favorite.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Well, I've used that a lot this week and I
do like it. But to move away from that, there
were a couple of themes that I came away with
from this draft. You know, the Jaguars couldn't run the
ball last year, last two years. We've already talked about that.
They added two interior offensive linemen and two running backs, right,
so boom they went after that. The defense was just
that it bled the back end of the defensive particularly,
