Speaker 1 (00:00):
We have arrived at week four. J P.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Shatwick with you, and now time for our interviews for
Countdown to kick off on the Jaguars Radio Network, and
we start this week with Pride of the Jaguars running
back Fred Taylor.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Yeah, it's a good matchup. I think it's a great
match up here. You have a team that's three and ohero.
They've had some early adversity. A lot of their you know,
superstar players, guys they depend on or either have been
banged up or either or out for the season are
going to miss, you know, a nice collection of games here.
So this is a team that's in the locker room saying, hey,
(00:33):
next man up, we got to be.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Ready to play.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
And you insure a Jaguars team who's starting to build
on that confidence.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
They had a small hiccup in week two.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
I think they found their groove in week three and
I think they're developing identity.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
As well along the way.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
So they want to go back and do a lot
the same thing they did a week ago. Let's play
great defense and give the opportunity to give the offense
an opportunity a chance to start to catch up and
match their energy. But the good thing is you see
some resemblance of a team who is very confident and
(01:12):
who believes they can win.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Fred.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
You touched on the injuries. They got quarterback questions coming
into the week. The wide receivers have been dinged up.
But you know one guy who's going to be out
there is Christian McCaffrey. What do you like about his game?
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Everything?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
I mean, that's the easiest way to sum it up,
but just to give you some detail, I mean, he
catches the ball well. If you can look at the
early season statistics, he's one of their leading receivers, as
he is every year as long as he's healthy. That's
the asterisk next to Christian's name. I know he has
some early preseason injury where he didn't go much, but
(01:50):
he's out there. He's dependable when he is out there,
and they're going to look to get him the ball.
You know, they're not going to hesitate to throw him
the ball. In the pass game, whether it's check down
or routes by design, he's gonna get his touches. And
then when he's running the ball, he's very elusive, has
great vision. He's not a huge back, but he's a
(02:10):
strong back. He understands how to make himself explosive, and
that's just true being decisive and his ability and that
comes by way of vision. So Christian is a total package.
He's been that way for several years.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
I don't know how Carolina let him go. I think
in order.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
To be a great running back in his league, you
have to convince a team to trade you allah a
year ago, and you have to go to another place
and show them your worth and value. And Christian has
done that ever since he stepped foot in San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
So not gonna be an easy defense.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Certainly, the best back that they faced all year, you know,
last week was Nick Tubb coming off injury, and he's
shown some signs of in his return from injury. But
Christian is a whole, entirely different monster. So it'd be
a good challenge for the defense.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
And then they got a fullback Kyle Uschek, who they've
used all over this offense.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Yeah, I've never heard of that guy. Fullbacks don't exist.
The only fullback I know is Greg Jones, and that's
the only one that ever mattered.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
The rest of those guys can go and be fullbacks,
and you know, live this this secret life because there
they don't really exist in the NFL no more. I
mean they have a fullback here and there, but it's like,
you know, like the F position, the tight end, tight
end two. Those guys are multitaskers and they get it done.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
So fullback I don't believe it's a real thing. They're
like unicorns. Stand corrected.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Fred Taylor with us prut of the Jaguars running back.
Let's go to defense, shall we. It's Robert solid defense.
So he's back, he's running. He's called the players in
San Francisco. But know Nick Bosa, how big a loss
is this for San.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Fred It's a huge loss.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
I mean, I think when you take Detroit for example,
you know, and you look at Aiden Hutchison and when
he got injured the year ago, that defense sort of
got radiled and they kind of lost their way.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
He's that same leader you know on that defense.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
He's there, TJ Watt, you know he's there JJ Watt,
you know he's Nick Bosa.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
I mean, what else can you can you say?
Speaker 3 (04:27):
He's been you know, the heartbeat of that defense for
for years.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
You know, they still have Fred out there and he's
a leader.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
But Nick Bosa is just the guy that you have
to make sure he's accounted for each and every play.
You have to alter your game plan, you have to
send running backs out the chip to make sure he
doesn't get going.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
It's a huge loss for them.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
I'm sure they're going to find a way to try
and fill the void, which is going to be a
big task. Luckily for us, he's not present, you know,
and we'll take it. You know, we'll take And that's
just the nature of the NFL. Man guys are in
and out, and it's timing. You see, mac Jones has
potential PCL and Brock is supposed to return here and
(05:14):
you know he's had some injuries where he missed the
game or two, and you know, just fortunately it's the
matchup regardless of who's out there.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
I'm sure the coaches are.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Saying, you gotta go and get this win and get
back on the East Coast, get ready for a Monday
night game.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
Fred Taylor with us, all right, how do you fix
the drop issue for the Jags receivers.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
You gotta keep giving them the ball.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
You got to just continue to go back to him
and you know, show them that you're still confident in them.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
What else are you going to do?
Speaker 3 (05:46):
You got to just keep throwing it and hope that
they catch more than they drop. I hope that they
catch the ones that they're supposed to catch in the
crunch time. Hopefully these guys have been, you know, taking
it amongst themself. Else to do additional drugs after practice,
to do additional route running after practice. I mean, that's
(06:06):
what pros do. They take ownership, They find a way.
That's the best thing I could say, man is find
a way give it to them. Until they start put.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Some super blue on their chest, I don't know. Jp
they better catch the ball.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
This personality, this defense is starting to show. They're getting
after the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Maybe not in.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Sack numbers, but the pressures are there, the takeaways are there.
They lead the league with nine. You know this is
a good start, right. What's next for this defense?
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Just to build on it. You know, you want to
build consistency. You know, I do know that preparation, proper preparation.
It gives you opportunity to be disciplined. And once you
when preparation meets discipline, consistency goes from there and then
success follows. So you know they prepared, They've spoken about that.
We're starting to see discipline. You know, a few you know,
(06:59):
mental errors here and there throughout the course of the game,
but that's okay. And even the penalties defensively, the penalties
hadn't been there, you know.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
The penalties that we're seeing. The bulk of the penalties.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Are from the offensive side of the ball, which is
the weirdest thing for me.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
The offensive job is more focused and mental than than
than the physical stuff.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Defense. You have to be physical, you have to display effort, and.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
They're flying around and they're doing all these things and
they're loving it. So I think consistency and what they're
doing will be the next thing. And once they hone
in on that and lock it down, they're going to
be a defense that all the offenses in the NFL
are gonna not want to play or they're going to
make sure they bring their they bring their a game
to face this game.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
So I'm looking forward to this matchup. It'll be a
great challenge.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Or you have a solid quarterback and party, you have
a solid running back and Christian McCaffrey. Uh, you have
a slewer receivers that you have to you know, prepare for.
I like the jab to make it back home with
a window. Just looking at the overall matchup. I'm not
locking anything or doing that stuff. No predictions, but just
(08:11):
me being me, just looking at the matchup as I
see it right now. It seems based on how the
Jags have performed and looking at the opponents that the
forty nine ers play, I would call it Jacksonville. And
that's outside of being a Homer, I would still call
it Jacksonville.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
If they have executed, they would be three and zero
right now, and if they execute going ahead, they should
beat a lot of teams, especially a team is injured
as the San Francisco forty nine ers.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
So go take advantage of it.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Fred, always a pleasure to visit with you, and we'll
do it again in the post game.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Likewise, next time my AI agent is going to show
up and do just sit down with you.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
I'm gonna show you how to program that you know
a little bit, you know working on that.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Does the AI agent have sleeves or no?
Speaker 1 (08:58):
You know what? He had guns? You? Yeah? Well, you
know what, he has a nice big biceams. I would
say that, you know twenty twenty five. Yeah, be careful
what you're saying great to see you, Fred, Thanks all right.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Defensive tackle Eric Armstead is facing his former team this
week and caught up with Brian Section in the locker room.
Speaker 4 (09:19):
A little bit different leaving on Saturdays and they're trying
to keep our body clock on schedule the best we can.
We went played in Vegas last year somewhat similar, so yeah,
just do the best you can.
Speaker 5 (09:36):
Going home?
Speaker 6 (09:36):
Does that feel like home?
Speaker 5 (09:38):
Still not really home.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
I'm from Sacramento, but going to a place I've been
for extremely all the time and you know, had a
lot of memories there, so I'm excited about the opportunity
to go out there and get our first road win.
Speaker 5 (09:54):
A lot of success as well.
Speaker 6 (09:56):
Although the team that you came here with two years ago,
there's only two guys left them at the defense now
that that Nick is injured. Things change so fast in
this league. Is It's just part of business now, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Things do change fast.
Speaker 4 (10:09):
It is a part of the sport. But a thing
that I remind younger players is that all you really
have in this is your experiences and your memories and
that bond that you have with the people you do
work with. You know that never leave so make sure
that you cherish share those moments.
Speaker 6 (10:28):
Uh, you're off to a great start, and the defensive
tackles in particular are playing very well. The run numbers
say that, but the pass rush numbers as well. Why
are you having success with your pass rush in the
middle of this defense this year?
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Us what I.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Do best at a high level and study my opponents
and try to go out there and execute my game
plan and you know, let the let the rest fall
into place.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
Larry Krueger of K and BR Radio in San Francisco
has the forty nine ers perspective, starting with an offense
doing just enough good question.
Speaker 7 (10:57):
Really, I mean, they're just it's just been good enough.
It's not like they're doing anything.
Speaker 8 (11:02):
They have not.
Speaker 7 (11:03):
Hit their stride. They're just, you know, they're operating a
probably forty percent of capacity. But Ricky Piersoll has stepped
up and Christian McCaffrey has stepped up. They still have
Trent Williams, and they've gotten really really good quarterback play.
Both Brock Purty and Mac Jones can process and they're accurate,
They play on time, they make good decisions. I think
(11:23):
a lot of it too, is you know, it's been
mac Jones the last couple of weeks, and I think
Kyle Shanahan is seeing the traits that he liked in
mac Jones. I'm sure it's probably got to be very
gratifying for Kyle Shanahan to see mac Jones and his
offense flourish like this.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Christian McCaffrey, of course dual threat and has the most
touches in the NFL. Is that sustainable long run? Is
he back to his prime right here? Or does he
need help around him?
Speaker 1 (11:50):
I mean, I don't.
Speaker 7 (11:52):
I don't think it could be sustainable. He's on a
ridiculous rate pace. They'll use more Brian Robinson, but they
haven't thus far. Maybe it's just because brought Robinson's new
but they're just leaning heavily on Christian because they're doing
whatever they can to win games early in the year.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Larry Krueger with us kb A Radio, San Francisco. Trent
Williams has been at it for sixteen years in the league.
What about his game and the way he goes about
his business brings confidence to this offensive line?
Speaker 7 (12:21):
Well, I mean he's just such a dominant guy. I
mean they can slide everything away from him and allow
him to go one on one and just know that
he's going to get the job done. I mean, that's
really the effect of Trent Williams, as you can slide
everything away from him and just know that he'll stand
up on the island against the best players in the league.
Now he's for his first game in Week one. He
(12:44):
was he didn't play a lot this summer. He was rusty,
He allowed I think six pressures. It was not one
of his finest efforts. And then it got kind of
annoying listening to the people going, you know, highlighting, how
you know this awesome, incredible player, Hall of Famer, you know,
it's highlight is down game And I think he didn't
like hearing it because he came back. The last two
games have just been spectacular, and he's playing with a
(13:07):
bone bruise on the knee. It's pretty painful. He's not
practicing much, but he's the guy's a force.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
LA.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Let's get to defense now, know Nick Bosa, what does
this mean for the edge players now for the Niners
and what do they have to offer without him there?
Speaker 7 (13:25):
Well, I mean as far as how they're gonna do it,
I guess we're gonna have to figure that out together.
But I would say my guess is that you tear
Gross Maatos, who's played inside in their you know, third
down nickel package. I think he now is going to
play outside full time, and I think you're still gonna
see I don't think they're gonna ask Michel to do
anything different, but I think they may ask Gross Matos
(13:47):
to be that edge setter and that replacement for Bosa.
As far as their options within the roster, they have
Robert Beel and Trevis Gibson on the practice squad. Gibson
did have seven sacks with the Bear, I think in
twenty to one or twenty, so he's a decent rusher
and he had a real good summer. So I would
imagine they'll promote one, if not both of those guys,
(14:07):
and then they may look around in a couple of
weeks at trade candidates, at practice squad options around the league.
I think they'll be aggressive because they you know, Bose
is a loss.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
What is the field defensively with this team? What is
their identity?
Speaker 7 (14:20):
Well, I mean there's just a lot faster on all
three levels defensively than they were a year ago. I
mean de Winters and Fred Warner are playing at a
ridiculous level.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
They're really good.
Speaker 7 (14:29):
And then mckel and Huff. Mickel Williams and Bryce Huff
has given their front line more speed, and then Upton
Stout and Marquis Siegel, the rookies and their secondary have
given their secondary more speed. So it's a much faster
defense than it was a year ago on all three levels.
But it's also a young defense that's gonna make mistakes
and probably could be tricked and fooled in certain situations.
(14:52):
So there's growing pains. But Robert Salas blitzing about twenty
five are about twenty two percent of the time, which
is up his previous hint here, but it's all based
on his personnel, and now I would imagine that number
will continue to climb without Nick Bosa.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
And finally, defensive backs coach for the Jaguars Ron Milas
with Brian Sexton. Starting with the impact of cornerback Jordan Lewis.
Speaker 8 (15:13):
I think it was important in the offseason that we
earmarked a couple of guys that we really wanted, and
Jordan Lewis was one of him, and then Eric Murray
was another, and those two guys have made a huge
difference in our maturity and how we go about our business.
They brought a sense of calm. You can say to
our group.
Speaker 6 (15:33):
You can tell when you talk to Jordan in particular,
that the expectation the standard ron is very, very high.
Did you get that talking to him in his free
agent visitor? Did you know him from previous places?
Speaker 8 (15:43):
Everything that we had heard that that was the kind
of guy that we were going to get, And you
know what, we got that kind of guy. The one
thing he's able to do, he holds him accountable. He
holds himself accountably, accountable the players and ap myself, making
sure we're on point as well.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
You know, you're never guaranteed with what you're going to
get in free agency. Once you pay a guy, he
comes from one place to another and how he'll mix.
But he and Tyson Campbell seem to have a really
interesting dynamic between them. They get along, they fit, their
personalities are so different.
Speaker 8 (16:12):
Well, here's what I'll say about that, he's gravitated to
a couple of guys. Jarian Jones spent the summer with him,
So he's kind of been the big brother to a
lot of guys. And he's a big brother to Tyson.
He's a big brother to Jarian and too really are
to our whole group.
Speaker 5 (16:27):
So I give a lot of credit to how.
Speaker 8 (16:29):
He goes about his business, not saying it's all him,
because again, Eric is that same way. Everything is very
serious with both of those guys.
Speaker 6 (16:36):
Eric and Dewey in the secondary both had interceptions in
the game against Cincinnati. You've got nine interceptions in three games.
That's an unheard of total around Jacksonville. Doesn't happen that
often in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (16:47):
Well, I think there our guys that have really caught
to the things that Campanelli's been talking about.
Speaker 5 (16:53):
It's all about what the ball.
Speaker 8 (16:55):
And really we've been able to capitalize on our opportunities.
And a lot of times what happens when you're not
getting interceptions, you're probably missing out on opportunities, and.
Speaker 5 (17:06):
Thus far we've been able to capitalize.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
And tell me about Tyson in particular last week, he
gives up the touchdown, then he causes the fumble, and
then he makes the huge play on Nico Collins on
the first play of their game winning attempt. Right, tell
me about what it takes for a player to bounce
back that quickly.
Speaker 8 (17:22):
That's exactly what I said doing this. That was outstanding
to be able to come back from something like that,
whereas we give up a quick strike and a sudden change,
and the comeback knowing that the fact that they are
probably going to come right back to you, and being
able to make two quality plays to cause a fumble
there in scoring position, you could say, and then they
take another shot on and he makes another play. So
(17:44):
I love the fact that he was able to forget
the mistake and bounce back from it and have a positive,
positive impact on what happened at the end.
Speaker 6 (17:53):
You've got some young players who are starting to rise.
Antonio Johnson last week, the week that you released during
El Savage, here he comes and he made a game
ceiling interception. You could get Monterrek Brown back pretty soon.
You have a not an embarrassment of riches, but you
have some depth.
Speaker 8 (18:07):
Well, I'm going to say this, Anthony Perkins does an
outstanding job with Antonio, and Antonio is he's in the
office in the morning every day trying to get the
little bits and pieces that's going to push him over
the top on game day. So you could say this,
the guys have gravitated to what it takes to be
a pro, and you're starting to see those things.
Speaker 6 (18:29):
You've been in this league for twenty five years college
before that. How much fun is it for you to
step in in year one and see a team come
together in the first couple of weeks and play the
way you want them to play.
Speaker 8 (18:39):
It's always important, especially if you're new to an organization
or new to a group, to really come in and
see the things that you talk about. Really what camp
Nelly leads our group, see the things that he is
he's demanding actually show up on game day.
Speaker 5 (18:55):
And I think that's important.
Speaker 8 (18:57):
It's not just one guy, our leaders, Anthony Campanelli, and
we've got a couple of guys that have been around
the block a couple of times, meaning in the back end,
that have helped UH with the message. And I think
that anytime you can have that, you have a chance.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
How about a final thought about what those guys up
front are giving you. I mean to see Josh and
Trayvon pushing the pocket. Really it's a cornerback and a
safety's best friend.
Speaker 8 (19:19):
Well, you know what, when I got here, I knew
that we had two quality defensive ends.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
I didn't realize what kind of quality we have.
Speaker 8 (19:28):
It does make a big difference when the quarterbacks being
harassed and yeah a guy might be open for a
step and knowing that the fact that he's probably not
going to be able to see it. I mean, you
think about the last play of the game, they have
that ball get tipped and there's and I want to say,
the kid was coming kind of coming open. That tip
ball made the made made our day. I know Antonio
(19:50):
and capitalized on it, but it really was the.
Speaker 6 (19:52):
Rush only three weeks in final thought, what does it
take for your group to keep getting better?
Speaker 5 (19:57):
What do they have to focus on?
Speaker 8 (19:58):
Well, I think that the just like anything else, it's
just the little things and the mistakes that we have made.
We just can't make the same mistakes twice. So as
long as we are continually trying to get it a
little bit better every day, I think the product will
be good on the field.
Speaker 2 (20:13):
The Jaguars visit the forty nine Ers Sunday at four
h five Eastern. Countdown to kickoff when the Jaguars Radio
network starts at three o'clock.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
Enjoy the game.
