Hi, how are you hey, I'm good, Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Thank you, Thank you so much for joining me.
Speaker 5 (01:46):
So I've been looking forward to talking to you because
I want to talk about your latest album. It's all
happening now. I read somewhere that this album was fifteen
years in the making, so it must feel good having
it out there we're able to consume.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
But I want to talk about that today.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
So can you tell us about what listeners can expect
when they listen to this album.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah, So I started working on this album fifteen years ago,
and you know it was at the time I was
really wanting to do a traditional sounding country album. But
at the time, you know, there it wasn't really a
lot of traditional music going on, and so you know,
it kind of got put on the shelf, or it
did get put on the shelf, I should say, for
(02:26):
fifteen years. And then you know, I was working with
Warner Music Nashville with with Randy Travis and the and
the AI Project and Chris Lacey, who is the head
of Warner Now. She basically said, hey, you know that
that album that we that we have from fifteen years ago,
(02:47):
I think we should put that out, yes, And so
I was like, that would be awesome. You know, that
would be great. So I was very excited about that,
and so we put that out at the end of August.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
Yes, and these collections of songs. What do these collections
of songs on this album mean to you? And what's
it difficult picking and choosing what went on the album?
Speaker 3 (03:08):
You know, it was because I had written several songs
at that time, and you know, I was really excited
about those. But at the same time, you know, I
was getting pitched songs from other songwriters and other publishing companies,
and so we ended up with this big pile of
songs and it was kind of hard to choose because there,
you know, a lot of them are really good, but
(03:28):
you know, I kind of had the help of my
producers and so we just we we ended up what
we what we got, And I'm just super excited about
it and glad that it's finally out.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
Yes, and fans are able to check it out now.
It's available everywhere where you stream your music. It's super easy,
So go and find it everybody. You will love it,
I promise you. And so, how do you feel that
this album differs from your previous album Home in a way?
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I think it has more of an acoustic, kind of
a natural feel, if that makes sense. There's a little
bit more It's not bluegrass, but it kind of leans
that way. You know, there's a lot more mandolin and
doughbroa and things like that in there. So yeah, and
you know it was co produced by Jerry Douglas, So
if that makes any sense.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Oh, yeah that oh yeah, yeah, I love it.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Oh, it's amazing. It's such a great it's such a
great album. Honestly, all of the work that you have
is incredible. You have just such an amazing, amazing voice.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Thank you. You're very welcome.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
And you're currently of course on tour with the More
Life tour with Randy Travis. And you started touring with
Randy in his original band, his original band. How cool
is that in twenty nineteen. So how did this wonderful
collab and ultimately friendship begin.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
So in twenty twelve, right before or twenty thirteen, right
before Randy's stroke. Yes, I was working with Kyle Lenning
at the time. Actually, you know, right around the time
I was working on this new album, and I had
met Randy briefly through Kyle, and we ended up working
together on a movie called The Price, an independent film,
(05:06):
and you know, working with Randy on a movie set
was really an incredible experience, you know, because he is
a great actor as well as an artist, and so
we ended up striking up a friendship on that movie set.
And unfortunately, shortly after that he had a stroke, and
you know, he had gone through years of rehab and
(05:27):
stuff after that, and we just kind of kept in touch.
And then in twenty nineteen, his manager, Tony Conway, was
trying to figure out a way we need to get
Randy's music back out on the road, and Randy wanted
to go back out on the road and see his
fans and he missed his band, and so they asked
me if I would be willing to go on the
road with him and present his music. And you know,
(05:50):
I guess growing up he influenced how I sing and
how I sound, and so there's a lot of similarities there,
I guess. And you know, they just humbled and honored,
you know, just to be asked. And it's been so
much fun since since we started.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
Yes, And you know, I was lucky enough to actually
see you do your thing at the Country Tonight Theater
in twenty twenty three thanks to East Tennessee Concerts, Brian
orr So, I got the chance to meet you and
Randy Travis and see the show.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
It was phenomenal. You all were incredible.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Oh thank you.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
You're very welcome, and I just loved every second of it.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
I love how it goes through his career on like
the screen, and then you're of course bringing forth the
music with your voice, which I think is wonderful, but
also your daughter.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Gets involved as well on tour. It's the show which
I love.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
And so she's been she's been singing some Randy Travis
since she was a little girl.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
I noticed, yes, since she was two.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
You know, I was rehearsing. She was with me. You know,
I was kind of a stay at home dad during
those COVID years, and I was just rehearsing a lot,
and you know, she learned a lot of the words
to the songs. And one day Mary and Randy herd
her singing deeper than the holler. And Mary's that said,
she has to get on stage with you and sing
that with you. And I laughed because I was like,
(07:05):
she's two years old, and but you know what, she
did it, and she killed it and she's been doing
it ever since.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I love that. That's amazing.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
It's it's such a cool way to grow up too,
you know, just kind of being around that music scene,
that's one of that's good.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Yeah, it's you know, I'm just it's a proud dad.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Kind of thing, you know, absolutely, absolutely you could tell
from you could tell just from the audience how proud
you are when she's singing.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
So I love that, and I hope everyone checks out
all the tour dates.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
They're of course at your website, James to pray dot com,
so please make sure you do that.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
I have some fun questions for you if you don't mind.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
I don't mind at all.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Perfect's perfect. So as you tour a lot, you're always performing.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
I feel like, what have you ever had any kind
of embarrassing on stage moments or something that just didn't
go as planned live and in person?
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Well, you know, besides the occasional you know slip uff
I missed the lyrics or oh yeah, something like that.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
You know, one thing that I had to get used to,
especially in the theater, working in those old theaters, is
that when when it's really dark in the audience, you
kind of lose your equilibrium or you know, you kind
of get a little wobbly. Oh and I yeah, I
almost fell on stage. I literally like had to catch
myself and it was very obvious. Yes, so that was
(08:27):
probably like I didn't actually fall, but I came pretty close.
And thankfully that's the closest I did come to falling.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
But yeah, they could at the recovery though, I'm sure
at least you're professionally, it's all about how you recover.
That's what being on.
Speaker 5 (08:41):
The road, anything, anything could happen, and it usually does.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
I love that.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
And the next one question that I have for you,
are there any artists you know growing up that you
really listen that you really grew up on. But then also,
you know country music today, is there an artist that
you would also love to work with?
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Yeah, you know, other than growing up listening to Randy Travis,
another vocalist that I really tuned into early on was
Vince Gill and I did get to meet him one time,
and I would I would love to work with him
at some point or another. But you know, another artist,
I guess some more contemporary artists that I really like is,
(09:23):
of course, you know, Zach top I've been really getting
into his stuff. But Jason Alden, you know, Jason Alden
just seems to continuous, continually put out just a strong song,
one strong song after another, and it's you know, I
love his consistency and the vibe of all of his music.
Speaker 5 (09:42):
Oh for sure, I want to see it all. Let's
start a petition, Let's make it happen. I could see
it happen. And you know, you've had so many great
career highlights so far. I mean your grand Ole Opry
debut of course, you know, working with with Randy. What
would you say has really been a highlight of yours
that you can think of on top of your head,
(10:02):
but also something that you would really love to do
that you haven't had the opportunity yet.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Well, you know, I would love to get out and
be an opener for somebody like you know, Kenny Chasmy.
I just you know, I mean, what an amazing show
he puts on. And you know, I'm I'm a beach lover,
you know, I'm an island lover. So I think I
think I would fit right in into that, into his
uh shows. But yeah, I would love to do something
(10:28):
like that. I guess the highlight of my career, you know,
I mean, I've I've had It's it's kind of hard
to choose, but you know, being on the voice opery,
you know, the opry debut, just being on the opry
really is like because as as a country artist, you
kind of have that feeling or you tell yourself, you know,
(10:48):
the opry is the goal, it's the top. You know,
you've made it once you reached the opera.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
You know.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
That's what I've always told myself. And so it was
a very very proud moment and I got to share
that with my family, and yeah, it was a really cool.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Cool night.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
That's such a cool moment being able to step in
that circle. I mean, I'm sure you just felt all sorts.
That's the feelings that you probably felt. That's amazing.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
I love that And I am just so excited for
you of all of the great adventures that you have
going on currently with the tour but then also the
latest album. It's all happening, and I hope everyone checks
