My review of The Dirt, available on Netflix. Tentative script below!
The Dirt is directed by Jeff Tremaine and is the story of the rise and fall of the members of the infamous band Motley Crue. This film is not your typical band style movie that has become popular recently, it has much more comedy to it. Which is a breath of fresh air, as most films of this style tend to take a more serious behind the scenes approach. The film definitely touches on some of the more heavy aspects of the character's lives, but balances out the seriously dark aspects with comedic moments throughout.
I went into this film not knowing much about the members of the band or their shenanigans while they were on top of the world. Each character gets their time to shine in this film, whether it being negatively or positively. The format of the film is refreshing, taking a page out of the Office, having characters converse directly to the viewer letting us know what things they found out later in life or what things were changed to make the movie flow better. I absolutely loved the scenes they used this technique, as it was not dwelled upon for too long or set up in most cases. It gave the film a nice flow to it.
This film is definitely a raunch fest though, it will be apparent from the opening scene. And that may turn off some of the audience. A lot of the comedy is played more on the silly or raunchy side like I said but I think this choice was deliberate due to the nature of things that happen late in the film. It gives the film a balance that was unexpected. If you are familiar with the band going into this movie you know what I am talking about.
The acting overall is pretty good. Machine gun Kelly as Tommy Lee is great, he really brought Lee's care free looking for love attitude to the film. He made you feel for this character who has everything but someone to love him. And whe they finally get that love they mess it up. It is tragic but again is balanced by the comedy of the film. Douglas Booth as Nicki Sixx is also great, he brought Sixx's troubled past and rocky beginnings to life. You could really get a sense of the character, although later in the film the delivery comes off as a little flat. The stand outs for me in the film were Daniel Webber as Vince Neil and Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars, both men put a lot of work into their characters. Webber in particular gave a powerful performance towards the end of the film, which I am not ashamed to admit did make me cry a little. Rheon played Mars perfectly, mimicking the guitarist mannerism and stoic disposition to a tee.
Overall this movie is about brotherhood and creating a family, however dysfunctional, for yourself. I absolutely adored this film. As for a ranking it is a solid 7 out of 10. Great direction, fun storytelling and solid acting, if you are interested at all in Motley Crue you will LOVE this film.
