(00:00):
we are back with the second partof my conversation with my friends,

(00:03):
the wonderful Brandie and Ryan ofHome+Sort and the How To Summit.
If you have not listened to the lastepisode, I would love for you to go back
because Brandie and Ryan run a sevenfigure organizing business and they have
boat loads of wisdom to share with you.
They were talking about how they activelyreevaluate things in their business a lot.
And whether you are a solopreneur orhave a team, if you are a four, five

(00:27):
or six figure business owner, theyhave great things to talk to you about.
I always learned a ton from them.
When I talk to them and I would lovefor you to go back and listen to that.
This second part of the episode,we're talking about a lot of other
things, including what is newthis year at the How To Summit.
I love the How To Summit so much.
I will be speaking this year.

(00:47):
I have spoken for the last coupleof years, um, and I am thrilled
about it, but they are talkingabout all sorts of things.
They had this year, new speakers.
New things, new venue, all of the things.
So I would love to see you there If youuse the code, Melissa 10, you will get a

Let me know you're going to bethere because I would love to
reach out and give you a hug.
And if you're not a hugger, ahearty handshake or a fist bump
or really whatever you want.
So, uh, anyway, let's get backto Brandie and Ryan of Home

(01:32):
Sort and the How to Summit.
And I'll see you in Dallasin just a few short months.

Brandie | How To Summit (01:37):
I think part of our reevaluating too is Ryan's
creative and she actually likes change.
Yeah.
That's actually a good thing.
I am more resistant to change and soI'm really grateful for her that way.
And so I think probably alot of people listening are a
little bit change resistant.
And it's funny because we talk aboutthat a little bit with the summit stuff
of like, why would someone come backto a similar conference every year?

(02:00):
Every year that we meet, the world is different.
The variables of how we'reoperating businesses.
We are not working in the exactsame climate that we were last year.
Yes.
You know.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: Very different. (02:14):
undefined
I was actually gonna say you guyshave planned, you have recently
planned a very big wedding.
You are, you're just like theconsummate event planners.
So now you have to pivot from planning awedding to planning this year's summit.
Well, Brandie

Brandie | How To Summit (02:27):
just roped me into another baby shower last night.
Well, and all three ofus had children graduate.
And so we're also talking about that.
We're like, oh yeah, we got tothrow a graduation party too.
Doing all the dorm stuff.
And oh, gosh, it's a lot.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (02:40):
I admire you guys so much because you
do like such, and I'm not just sayingthis because I like you, you do
such an amazing job with the summit.
You can tell that you have thoughtabout that client experience.
Every single thing you know, thedecorations and how beverages are out
and how snacks are in the color schemeof the event and like all the things.
And when I was doing my secondand last daughter's graduation

(03:03):
party, this is not my jam, right?
It stresses me out.
And I'm just like, Brandie andRyan make this look so easy.
I want to tear my hair out, and allI'm doing is putting up a soda station.
Like, how do they do this all the time?
It's impressive.

Brandie | How To Summit (03:17):
Yes, now as you know, I did have a soda Shirley
Temple station planned for ourgrad party, and I didn't make it.
It didn't happen.
But I did

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: the, I did the swig thing, like (03:25):
undefined
we had syrups and coconut cream.
I wanted to do that.
Recipes.
Oh, we did the whole thing.

Brandie | How To Summit (03:33):
Oh yeah.
I really wanted to do it.
I think that's that's very popular.
People

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: loved it, but it was exhausting. (03:36):
undefined
Oh yeah.
So I just, I honestly, I don'tknow how you guys are doing it.
But what you said, Brandie, about, everything changes.
Like the difference between, you know, wewere just in Austin in September of 2024.
I am still sweating, by the way, itwas so hot, but In a year, you know,

(03:57):
a year from then in September ofthis year, we're gonna get together.
The world is wildly different andour businesses are different and
what clients require is different.
And, financials aredifferent, all the things.
And I know that you guysare thinking about that.
So can you just, can you tellus a little bit about what's
happening at the Summit this year?

Brandie | How To Summit (04:14):
So we've got a lot of new speakers, you know,
Melissa, this is interesting because ourindustry, even though our businesses are
all different, there's some very likeneat things about the productivity and
organizing industry that we work in.
And so I think that sometimes, maybeeveryone has this idea of we know
it all we've learned or I've alreadyheard someone speak on that before.

(04:36):
I've already heard about this.
And so for us, like the creativityand the tall order is to put on an
event every year to a demographic.
That's all somewhat very similar.
That's new and fresh.
And super beneficial and is reallysomething where people walk away
and they have game plans, actionablesteps and things like this where they

(04:58):
really find a lot of value in it.
So I feel like we've worked really hardat that this year as we do every year.

Ryan | How To Summit (05:04):
Well, and on a side note, just because we have
the same speaker doesn't mean you'regoing to hear the same information.
I could talk to Melissa everyday for 30 days and still
not know all that she knows.

Brandie | How To Summit (05:16):
Yeah.

Ryan | How To Summit (05:17):
You know, we do our very best to have great minds,
you know, speaking people that havesomething to offer people that we
know guarantee that you are going toleave with some something that you can
apply the next day, Monday morning.
That is so important to us, somethingthat you can really put into practice.

(05:39):
Yeah, absolutely.
Even if it's a, even ifit's a repeat speaker.
Yeah.
Oh, totally.
So did I tell

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (05:47):
you guys that I'm just doing my exact
same presentation as last year?
No, just kidding.

Brandie | How To Summit (05:51):
I actually do hope cause to be honest, there's a
lot of, I mean, I know you're not, butthings that I don't like me to work on.
So that would be great.
Yeah.
So yeah, I think it's likealways bringing like Ryan said,
great minds, great information.
And there's just somethingabout a community.
I read a quote that was like, if you wantto go, if you want to go hard, go alone.

(06:14):
But if you want to go far, go with someoneelse that kind of, I might've butchered it
a little bit, but I saw that today and Iwas like, That is legitimately the truth.
I can just speak for the three of us onthis call about the amount of voice texts
that we will have going back and forth.
If something weird happens with aclient, if we're discouraged, if
we're like, Hey, what are you hearing?

(06:35):
What's the chatter?

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (06:36):
Just really quickly, I was mad at the
container store today, and I, thefirst person I thought I was, I'm going
to voice message Brandie about this, because she's going to be mad too.
And guess what?
She had my back, andshe's that is ridiculous.
Which it was.
And I

Brandie | How To Summit: delivered on that response. (06:48):
undefined
You did.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (06:50):
Yeah.

Brandie | How To Summit (06:51):
But I think like that there's such value in that I
don't even know we like can't quantifya value like that of showing up, making
connection, and meeting other people, finding people who understand the
challenges that you're facing in business.
And so I think some of thosethings are just the theme and
the heartbeat of the event.
And so even though there's threadsthat are similar every year.

(07:14):
It's different every year either.
Like some of our speakers are talkingabout things I've literally never
heard someone speak on in person.
Or actually probably online ever.
And there really issomething for everyone.
The space is going to be fantastic.
Plenty of room, pumping air conditioning.

Ryan | How To Summit (07:31):
Yeah, we, we, you know, every year at the summit, we
do surveys and we take, we, you know, and the people are honest, God bless
them because they are honest people.
We were touching on, you know, userexperience or client experience.
The attendee experience this year is goingto be I mean, just a million times better.
The place where you're havingit, there is so much room.

(07:55):
It's just going to beevery year it gets better.
And I say the summit is like sucha combination of head and heart.
We need business knowledge, butwe also need to stay encouraged.
And that's where the community comes in.
So we do.
do our very best to provide bothof those avenues for people, and I

(08:15):
do think we do a good job at that.
In anything, I think there's a lotthat can be fixed, and we try and Every
year, make the summit better, but Ido think we do that part really well.
I'm proud of us for that.
You know, I will say this for anyoneout there wondering summit tickets are
a little bit more expensive this year.
Let me tell you why is that?

(08:36):
Everything's more expensive.
Everything.
Every dinner.
Every snack.
Every drink.
Well, I don't want you guys toleave going, Oh, the Brandie and
Ryan are just lining their pockets.
No, they are not.
That is not the truth.
You

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (08:49):
guys, speaking of my graduation party, my
friend has a really good queso dip.
So she gives, she tells me what Ineed to get right and it includes
the absolutely delicious, notgood for you velveeta Cheese.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
And paper.
I had to pay $89 for Velveeta for theamount of Velveeta that we needed.

(09:14):
Okay.
Velveeta Cheese, which is.
Really?
It's, you know, not that great.
You guys, things are expensive.
Okay.
So you guys are not likerolling in on a Rolls Royce.
It's just are very costly.

Brandie | How To Summit (09:29):
Yeah.
To be honest.
And we, Hey, we wish we wererolling in on a Rolls Royce.
Maybe I'll come some year, but and I hate that excuse.
We don't like charging more, butWhat I can guarantee you guys is
that this year is going to be better.
And so it's a good investment.
We're not going apples to apples.
This is going to be applesto oranges from last year.
It is going to be better.

(09:50):
And you know, and you guys need tosit down and think about how much do I
want to invest in personal development?
How much do I want to invest in education?
It is something you should be doing.
It's not.
In our business, it is not an option.
There's a conference that I'mgoing to, is it next week?
Oh my gosh.
Wait, is it tomorrow?
It's in July.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: You should know this. (10:10):
undefined

Ryan | How To Summit (10:12):
I don't ever know anything.
Anyways, cause I saw the 18th and Ithought it was on the 19th anyways
of July and Brandie's You gotta go.
You just, we can't both go becauseBrandie has something going on.
She's but you need to go down there.
This is not, it's not an option for us.
This is a female focusedwomen's business event.
And so I think a lot of people actlike this is just kind of like an

(10:34):
icing on the cake or oh, if I haveit and I would challenge you to
change your mindset to, oh no, Ihave to do this to make more money.
This is not if I have enoughmoney I can go it is no I have
to go so I can make more money.
So and it's a wonderful event when you docome and we would love to have everybody.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (10:54):
Yeah, I can't remember if I have already
said this on this conversation becausemy, my, my brain does not work.
I think I'm like Dory in finding Nemo.
My short term memory is gone.
But I really believe that so manypeople go what I've done for the
last few years hasn't been working.
I've always done the same things.
And it's always worked for me.
And now those thingsaren't working for me.

(11:15):
And I think the summit is an exampleof you've got to go and figure out
some of those things so that you canalso be energized to go change them.
And it is an investment, but it isnot remotely the biggest investment.
It's actually a tiny investmentcompared to other conferences
in the organizing industry.
I know that for a fact, and itis a teeny tiny amount compared

(11:38):
to a lot of other things.
And I would argue that even if you tiein airfare and Ubers and hotel and by
the way, there are people that would loveto share an Airbnb, all those things.
When you tie that together, theamount of client hours you have to
have for that investment to pay offis not, I mean, if you get one client

(12:00):
from what you get at the summit.
You have it paid for.

Ryan | How To Summit (12:03):
And I would say an important note.
I feel like this is really somethingthat I want to encourage the organizing
community is go in with an openheart and open mind and open hands.
I mean, literally one, you saidsomething earlier, Melissa, and I'm
like, that has just, your littlesentence has got , my brain, I haven't
been able to stop thinking about this.
I'm like, okay, I gotta go make this.

(12:23):
Make this thing after because thatwould be so good for our business.
So go in and go, okay, I'vegot something I can learn.
I've got something I can refine.
This is going to be beneficial forthese reasons and going with a,
with an open heart and open mind anda good attitude and with a smile.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: Again, you guys have a, you guys have (12:41):
undefined
something cool and unique and thatyou have each other, but a lot of
us are out here on an Island, right?
Like I am a solopreneur.
Even if I could argue, like whenI first started my organizing
business, I had an organizing bestie.
And.
I would say that relationship helpedmy business so much because I had
someone to bounce things off ofand I had someone that understood.

(13:02):
So even if your only goal of the summit isI need to go find some organizing friends.
I was out at dinner last nightwith three of my organizing
besties from the Minneapolis area.
We were talking about frustratingclients and we were talking about
frustrating situations and talkingabout our families and talking
about business and all these things.
I left going, okay, I feel heardand seen people that understand me.

(13:26):
And that's the thing, like thesummit, you just have a large group
of women and occasionally a coupleof men who all understand me, right?

Brandie | How To Summit (13:34):
Yes.
I heard something today.
Someone had said, if I showup thinking I'm somebody, then
I can't receive from anyone.
So I think that Just showing up withthis idea of I'm just like here to learn.
I genuinely feel that way at thesummit now for Ryan and I, because
we're working at the summit, ourrole is obviously different than
someone who's just attending.

(13:54):
And for speakers are working.
Melissa, when you show up, youhave a, a. A address to give.
So like you're working so you might be ina different mental space, but I sit there
as much as I can and I just wanna learn.
'cause I know that we don'thave it all figured out.
Yeah.
We've had some great successes.
We've had some hard failures andI know that no matter what, I can

(14:15):
receive from anyone at any time.
A lot excites me about the summit.
I'm incredibly relationally motivated.
You know that, but all of it together, Ijust think is a really special time that
I don't know this in this community withthe way it is not happening anywhere else.
I do know that.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (14:33):
I know that you have a bunch of new stuff.
Quick overview of some ofthe fun stuff for this year?

Brandie | How To Summit (14:39):
So Melanie Summers is coming and she's actually
doing a workshop and she's doinga main stage session and she one
of the topics is neurodivergent.
organizing.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: I love that. (14:50):
undefined

Brandie | How To Summit (14:51):
I had, yeah, like working with
people that are neurodivergent.
Maybe if you are neurodivergent, itencompasses the whole, you know, it's like
a broad painting with a broad brush here.
And I think it's super important.
It's really great.
I'm really excited because there isa group that was, Kind of started

after the How To (15:09):
Summit a couple of years ago called and they call
themselves the summit sisters.
There's nine of them.
They're from all over the US and we'regoing to do a really fun panel with them.
And just talking about they individually.
Each of them say that coming to thesummit and the relationship they
formed together in this group hasbeen the most beneficial thing to

(15:30):
their business that they can think of.
And so I'm excited to hearabout their origin story.
And you know what they have to say,Ryan and I are actually speaking this
year, we're going to do a workshopon relocations and then we're
noodling around some of the otherthings that we might talk about.
Melanie Summers is also speakingabout client acquisition.

Ryan | How To Summit (15:49):
She is such a good communicator.
We all need more clients, right?
So that's

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (15:55):
We do.

Brandie | How To Summit: That one's gonna be great. (15:55):
undefined
Even if we get too busy and we need toturn them down, at least we got the ask.
Yeah.
Yes.
Rebecca and Christina fromGraceful Spaces out of Austin.
They are incredible.
I honestly don't know anotherbusiness that's doing some of
the things that they're doing.
They're going to come and do a wholesession on goal setting and they've got
some really smart language with it thatthey use kind of when they're describing,

(16:18):
like how they lay out their goals andthings they want to accomplish and how
that works with a team or by individually.

Ryan | How To Summit (16:24):
And their background is in the corporate world.
So they're bringing, you know, Brandie andmine's background is just in being idiots.
Actually that's something to offer, you know, and so they, they're very
interesting too, cause they come atit from a very corporate mindset,

Brandie | How To Summit (16:40):
I know we have Tracy Bowers, Liz Wann, Jen
Johnson and Susie Salinas are doinga panel together and just between the
four of them, they all have reallysuccessful businesses that look.
a bit different and the four of themalso connected at the How To: Summit
in one of the beginning years and theyhave a mastermind that they do together.
And and Jen has never spokenat the summit so we're excited.

(17:02):
We've

Ryan | How To Summit (17:02):
actually asked her a couple times and she's
turned us down quite a few times.
Oh,

Brandie | How To Summit: so this time was yes. (17:05):
undefined

Ryan | How To Summit (17:08):
Yeah,

Brandie | How To Summit (17:09):
this time.
So it should be great.
And they all just, everyone that Ilove has a different style of business.
And so this is, I say all thetime, the summit's not about Ryan
and I, it's not about Home + Sortand what we do and how we do it.
It's just about the overall overarchingpicture of what's happening in the
industry and yeah, Melissa, you arespeaking, which I'm, I am excited about.

(17:29):
Will you tell everyonewhat you're talking about?

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (17:31):
One of the things I love about you guys
you have really great ideas andyou had graciously asked me to be
a speaker again, and I was like, ohmy gosh, what am I gonna talk about?
And then you guys came up with the idea.
I didn't come up with it.
You did.
Where you said you have over200 episodes of the podcast.
What are the things you havelearned from the podcast.
And it's not about podcasting.
It's about the things that I have learnedand seen about the organizing industry.

(17:56):
And I'm going to turn that intowhat do you need to be doing to
take action in your business?

Ryan | How To Summit (18:00):
Yeah.
I just think it's so cool thatyou talk to so many people.
You're just getting so many snapshotsof the industry that we don't get.
So

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (18:09):
yeah,

Ryan | How To Summit (18:09):
I'm pretty excited for that one.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (18:11):
I am too.

Brandie | How To Summit (18:13):
We have other speakers to Jen dietz she's out
of Dallas and she has an incrediblysuccessful business and she's got all
sorts of systems and ways that shedoes things that are like, They're
so smart and they're so thought outand they're so helpful to anyone.
And so she's going to bedoing a workshop talking about
those, which is really great.
We have brought in a good amount ofpeople that are just from all over.

(18:36):
I feel like we have some organizersthat are speaking that are
seasoned in the business too.
And so they've kind of lived throughthe ups and the downs and the trends
and the whatnot, and I've really hadcaught their stride with a success
and run a business for a long time.
It might be easy to be successful for twoyears, but to be successful for 10 year

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: takes a different person. (18:56):
undefined

Brandie | How To Summit (18:57):
Luck runs out.
You know what I mean?
Like I says all the time, we can get luckyonce or twice, run a company on luck.
And it's going to be really Great.
I know it's going to be alife changing year for people.
And I don't mean to like overdramatize what it does, but sometimes
one idea in your business iskind of life changing, you know,

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (19:17):
And I love what you said about being open to, because
I think that if you go and you have, you know, I don't have all the answers.
You guys don't have all the answers.
And if you go and say, hey, instead ofjust looking at Instagram and having FOMO
or thinking like, how is she doing that?
People give you the answers ofhow they're doing the things.
That's why I, when I was talking aboutBrandon and Mallory's session last

(19:39):
year, they were giving the blueprintof how they operate their business.
They were wide open.
They were happily answeringpeople's questions.
There's not gatekeeping.
People will tell you exactlyhow to do the things.
That's a big deal.

Ryan | How To Summit (19:53):
Yeah.
And a couple other we're still nailingdown all of our speakers, but a couple
of things that I know we're going totouch on is a client management system.
And this is not one specific, like it's not just Dubsado or
just HoneyBook or something.
This is, we have an expert in thefield of helping you streamline that.
This is what you need to make this.

(20:14):
you know, effortless and to save you time.
And then we're going to have someonetalk about inventory and not just,
hey, this is what I do, but there isnow a program I can't remember the
name of it, but it's a, software thatyou use about man, everybody needs

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (20:29):
that.
I've actually thought about creating it,except for, I don't have those skills.
So I'm happy to hear this.

Ryan | How To Summit (20:35):
Yeah.
We're still finalizing everything.
But that's just kind of some snippet.
I love it.
I'm so excited.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: And I'm excited to talk to people. (20:43):
undefined
I mean, I love the summit.
It makes me so happy.
And so I'm just, I'm thrilled to bethere again and just are you glad

Brandie | How To Summit (20:52):
you're coming back because I made you wear colors.
You know, you did

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (20:57):
forever.
It's very upsetting.
It was a very traumatic experience.
I did get through it.
I know I will get throughit again this year.

Brandie | How To Summit (21:06):
Yeah.
That is friendship right there.
I want you to know, I took off myblack t shirt to put on this top.
I've got my black pants on andmy black shoes, so I'm with

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio (21:17):
you.
As you can see, I didn't.
I am wearing my standard clothing.
But for you guys, Yeah, Iwill do something different.
Okay, people.
I love it.
I absolutely love it.
Listen, we're tired.
We've had a lot of stufflike graduating a senior.
It's one of the hardest things.
I mean, I understand there arepeople that like run marathons.
I don't get those people, but dude, I'mtelling you a graduating senior is no joke

Brandie | How To Summit (21:41):
for real.
Melissa, the events you were at thelast couple of weeks and the amount of
money you have to pay for everything.
Everything.
It's like you need to refinanceyour house to be able to get
your kid out of high school.

Melissa | Pro Organizer Studio: All the end of the year things. (21:54):
undefined
And then so some of my friendswith younger kids was like, how's
all the graduation stuff going?
And I just sent the Kim KardashianGIF of her just like throwing money.
I'm like, that's how it is.

Brandie | How To Summit (22:06):
That's, yeah.
It really is true.
100%.
